Here’s hoping for a Happy Holidays to you all… It is that time of the year again, our final issue of the year where we get to bring the Winter in and say goodbye to the other seasons. Winter has always felt like a romantic season, get to dress warmly, cozy up to the fireplace and light some candles with all the holiday smells. In this issue, we have gone all out, sharing our version of Winter. We have outdoor hot tubs, train stations, wreaths shown in different ways. We have festive colors for our Living In section. And if you did not notice the cover of this issue, we are going with the “ Home Alone” theme in the Family section. We have the fabulous Isla Gealach of Cheeky Pea in this issue; who is a household name and always something perfect to fit your living. We also have Momentous from Revival who popped up into our grid and has must have items that we all need in our inventories. The Staff at LTD always outdo themselves and we could not be more proud of them. We hope you enjoy their vision and will be inspired. R... It is December already!? With looking back over the months that have passed, I can’ t figure out where the time has gone. It is sometimes so hard to keep up with everything, things are changing so fast and because of all this movement forward, a lot of things fall by the wayside or are just left behind. It is often not because we want, but must and it all slowly became a memory. A waypoint in our life, good or bad doesn’ t matter, it defines us. Counting minutes, hours, days… and if I look back, it has been now 24 months with Love to Decorate, 12 issues, 12 months of being the editor, 6 editor notes. And now the last issue of the year 2016. Our featured designers, if they look back, can tell us a lot of the past in Second Life® they have been through. For this issue, we have Isla Gealach of Cheeky Pea and Momentous of store Revival with us, two stores that have been on the grid for a long, long time. Even if there is a lot of behind us, there is also the future to look forward to… whatever it might bring; this is what our Lifestyle Feature is about. B ack from the future; 100 Years of Deco, shows us one of the most loved interior styles I can think of, Scandinavian Interior. And because of the holiday and winter season that lay ahead of us, we have packed this issue with a lot of seasonal things. Christmas decorated porches for our At Home Feature, seasonal sweets and goodies in our Love to Decorate Food spread, Winter Wonderlands for the New Land feature and so much more. The last issue of the year is packed and with all of this, I hope you all will be with us for another inspirational year, in 2017. I hope you will enjoy your holidays, however you have planned on spending them.

ot only has Isla Gealach created whimsical, chic furniture, the main store location for Cheeky Pea is a destination stop that’s a must see. The lush, vibrant sim begs to be explored in between buying beautifully crafted items. “It really just came together as it happened. I would have loved to say that everything was very much planned from the beginning, with a clear path to what fit with the theme. Honestly it just came up bit by bit,” she said. “The whole concept just grew organically from a single chair. Every time I've expanded or changed, it's been a response or a proactive move to change with the needs of my customers. They really are the reason my store is here after all. Many customers expressed an interest at being able to locate things easily in world and on the marketplace, so we created InThePod, our product catalogue. Things have gotten more streamlined now and that's a bonus, but it's still a work in progress.” For those of you who don’t know, InThePod is an amazing online catalogue that customers can use to search for products without having to hop in-world or scroll through the pages on the marketplace. It is such a convenient way to find what you’re looking for when you’re in a rush or want no-nonsense shopping. That said, I would still highly recommend spending a good chunk of time at the main store in-world when you can. Isla said she was inspired to start making furniture in Second Life® while looking for a chair years ago. “I thought, ’I could make that. It looks so easy.’ I was with a friend that owned a furniture store in Second Life®. He's left long since then but he taught me how to use sculpties and create my own furniture. It was the start of a journey.” And what a journey it has been for Isla. She started making jewelry and readily admits it was not her strong point. So, in 2008 she went back to making furniture and hasn’t looked back since. And as Second Life® grew and changed, Isla found herself learning more and more about the process of creating. “I went on to learn to create my own sculpties and then when mesh came about, that too. I've always been self taught or Second Life®-taught. When it came to sculpts I took classes at Xeniversity but with mesh I taught myself through tutorials and trial and error.” Isla also spends a good chunk of her time doing design research. Just look at any of the stunning pieces she’s crafted to see how that pays off. The furniture is rich with detail and elevates anyone’s home, yard or office. “I like to know what the latest trends are, along with cozy interiors. That means time looking through blogs, magazines, websites. I like to gather bits and pieces of inspiration and put them together in my own style. I like to think I have a defined style but it sort of just comes together at the minute. I see a table and a sofa, and I think ‘That needs something, what does it need?’ and I make it. The same thing at times with large pieces. A lot of my larger items have been because smaller items that I loved needed a surrounding space.” And what about hitting that dreaded creative wall while designing? So many of us have different methods to get

over the proverbial hump. I, for one, tend to turn to music. “If I hit a wall I generally get up, get a coffee, go out with my dogs, get some air and come back to finish it. I'm quite determined when I start something to see it through. I don't understand people that can have several things going on at once. I'm a linear thinker with my workflow.” Isla also stays motivated by participating in many events throughout Second Life®. Admittedly, that’s how I’ve purchased the majority of items I own from Cheeky Pea. It js so hard to say no, especially now that she’s released her latest items: the CP: Herman Apothecary Set for Kustom9 and Celeste Bed Canopy Set for 11:11. Plus, she’s forever inspired by pieces in real life. “I love TK Max. It's a treasure trove of lovely, wonderful things. I could (and do!) spend hours in there. Almost anyone from Second Life® that has come to my real life home usually goes, ‘Ahhhh. Cheeky Pea in real life!’ I pull inspiration from everywhere. I'm the embarrassing friend that stops you on the street mid-conversation to take a picture of a light hanging or a window box nearby. My friends are used to it now. My partner sighs and tolerates it.” Take as many photos of a light hanging or window boxes as you’d like, dear Isla. We do love benefitting from your creative sparks. One thing that struck me about Isla as I got to know more about her was how passionate she is about her work. We’ve all heard it a million times: Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life. From where I’m sitting it looks Isla has found that job. But don’t just take my word for it. “I just design what I love,” she said. “I really can't make something I don't like. If I'm passionate about it, I'll make it. If I am ambivalent about it I feel that it shows in the quality of work.” Aside from participating in events and stopping her friends mid-conversation to take a picture, Isla also has plans to build a beach house in Second Life®. “I have been building it for months but it never seems quite ready or finished. I'd like to take the time to finish it but I'm so picky it might be another six months before I even get to upload in world,” she said. “I really want to make plants, too. Flowers, house plants, that sort of thing. It's extremely time consuming and people don't value those things as much as say, a full sofa. But a sofa would probably take half the time of a house plant.” We’ll wait for you, Isla. “My items have a more rustic, sometimes industrial look. I did not want to use that theme for the store because it would take away attention from the revival products. I hope visitors of the revival main store are pleasantly surprised when they first arrive.“

he talented designer and creator behind revival said it perfectly. When visiting the revival main store, the first thing that struck me was how beautifully Momentous was able to put the focus directly on his striking, well-designed products while at the same time giving me the fun task of gazing into oversized storage crates to see them. His vision was one of a desolate place. At first he’d considered making it an island but instead chose a desert. I have to admit I’ve spent quite a bit of time roaming through his store over the course of the last year. I’d be lying if I said I left empty handed every time. Momentous calls himself an everyday person, with an everyday family, everyday pets and an everyday job. There is nothing ‘everyday’ about his products. Carefully crafted with amazing detail, the furniture and home decor at revival will ease its way into any home decorating theme. There’s a little something for everyone, from apple baskets to book piles to one of my favorites, the boat shelter. It’s the perfect piece to place on a beach and lounge under the stars or chat with friends. Friends urged Momentous to try and create for Second Life® knowing that he has an affinity for making 3-D models. “I was lucky to meet some friendly people, like Elvi Hartley, who had faith in me and helped me in the beginning to put Revival on the map. Revival grew from basically nothing into what it is today in less than two years. When I moved everything into the new main store I was surprised myself with how much I achieved and created in those two years.” Part of the success he’s had can be attributed to his work ethic. Like many designers, Momentous works from a place of passion. “I never really work with a detailed plan. Sometimes I go with an idea I saw in real life and sometimes it’s something I found on the web. Some items come about by accident because I am trying something new in a 3D program. Items that may seem fairly simple can take a lot of time to look exactly the way I want. When I end up stuck with an idea after a while I put it aside and move on with another idea. I can always pick it up later, as frustrating as it may be. Usually it’s not so hard for me to create something as it is to get ideas of what I want to create. It’s a reason why I am not the biggest fan of themed events. Sometimes it helps but more often I feel that it blocks my creativity.” Standing in front of the aforementioned giant crates at the main store certainly adds to that creativity. I asked him about what he finds inspiring when he designs or if he follows any specific trends. “For revival I try to stick with a distinctive style and create items in a style I personally love. But you can not avoid being inspired by trends and what you see around you or find on websites like Pinterest and I follow several interior blogs in real life. I use that for my real life business as well as Second Life®. The new interior trend forecast for 2017 is more avant garde and glamour in warmer colour tones, bronze or gold instead of all the copper that has been a trend for a while. I am curious whether this new trend will be seen amongst designers in Second Life® and in what way.” Momentous also spoke about what else he’d like to delve into as far as creating goes. I have to admit I’m always so impressed when I hear designers talk about their aspirations and goals and what they’d like to challenge themselves with next. “I prefer to create items that can be used both indoors and outdoors and will fit in any type of atmosphere because there’s a large variety of people and styles from all over the world in Second Life®.” He paused. “Perhaps I would like to create more landscape items. But so far I have been too busy to really focus on that.” Even though he admitted that he doesn’t spend much time in Second Life® to decorating anything except his store and brand, Momentous does have a grand idea that he’d like to make a reality someday. “I still have the idea to create a sim. It’s fun for me to see how others, both bloggers and customers, use my items in a way I did not expect. he concept of Scandinavian Design as a particular style was first seen in the 1950s when a show featuring furniture and textiles from the five Nordic countries of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, toured Europe, the United States and Canada. It was further promoted by a number of prominent furniture designers that had a huge impact on the design philosophy such as Alvar Aalto, Verner Panton and Eero Aarnio. It was simple, fuss free chic and it caught the imagination of the world, much to the delight of the Scandinavians. At the time, there was increased availability of the new low cost materials and methods used for mass production and so the designers made good use of form pressed wood, plastics, anodized or enamelled aluminium and pressed steel to bring their ideas to fruition. A particularly ideological background emerged at that time as the Scandinavian countries practised social democracy, which expanded to most areas including industry and the arts. Historically, the Scandinavians lived in small homes, tasked with long, harsh winters that had few hours of daylight, so the traditional designs formed as a philosophy. This was called “lagom” and means “just the right amount”, not too little and not too much. The object was to create a space that was simple, uncluttered and efficient, yet warm and welcoming. To suffuse spaces with light, airiness, serenity and a feeling of oneness with nature. Another word to describe this style is the Danish “hygge”,

a term meaning to live the good life surrounded by loved ones. This innate trend continues today, with Scandinavians spending inordinate amounts of time and money on their number one hobby, decorating the home and entertaining guests. Today, there are many high street boutiques selling Scandinavian décor essentials and quite a number of superstores and online retailers all bringing the style within an affordable reach, which was one of the original tenants of the style – to provide designs of quality, using sustainable products that were affordable to every strata of society. This was a core theme in the development of modernism and functionalism generally, but the Nordic designers seemed to take it to heart in a big way. From the 1990s onwards designers began to treat every object they fashioned in décor as individual units of design, creating bold and unique statement pieces. Designers have focused on interior design style with furniture, lighting, textiles, accessories and everyday utilitarian items like dishes, silverware, cooking utensils and linens. Nordic countries now boast some of the best design schools in the world, such as the Bergen Academy of Art and Design in Norway, Finland's Aalto University and Konstfack University in Sweden. Investment in education (higher education is free in all three countries) is clearly paying off. Interest in Scandinavian design has grown due to new wave of creative energy from young Nordic designers.

Their designs are innovative, yet continue Scandinavian traditions in functional pieces that are produced to the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship combined with an egalitarian aim of affordability. The main purpose of Scandinavian design was, and still is, to improve daily living by bringing a cosy yet airy feeling with every object reflecting as much ambient light as possible. There's always a strong relationship between design elements and nature. It's often seen in the stark contrast between abstract and natural shapes, as well as hard and soft surfaces. Eco friendly homes use organic, sustainable building materials for flooring, walls, siding and roofing, whilst interiors make use of natural materials such as stone, wood, leather and hemp. The board guidelines to styling are clean lines, natural light, neutral colour and natural elements. Prioritising function without sacrificing aesthetics is essential. Clean, simple lines exude sophisticated elegance but don't compromise on comfort. Light is amplified by any means necessary with mirrors being strategically placed to reflect light, visually expanding the space available. Window treatments are kept sheer or translucent with billowing drapes or simple wooden blinds. The dominant colour palette is generally a light reflecting neutral. Lamps are also designed with simple lines and forms, creating maximum light with minimum clutter. Candles with their soft flicking glow are a firm favourite with the Scandinavians and are used to create a generously warm atmosphere, especially useful for evening entertaining. And, of course, a big dining table is essential for a culture where socialising is important! Calm, cool colours of white, cool blues and greys make rooms appear bright and spacious, even on a rainy day. Timeless white walls, trim, cabinets and counter tops appear to recede visually making rooms feel much larger than they are. In other words, a great deal of visual tricks are employed. Wooden floors are typical in all rooms except the bathroom, having light wood tones of teak and oak, beech and ash, with areas like lounges being defined by rugs. If pine wood is used, it's often grayed down with a special oil that reduces the yellow wood tones. Rugs and cushions may have pops of vivid yellow and orange tones or bold prints and chevrons to brighten up the light coloured furniture. Accessories are minimalist and generally scaled back to create less clutter and fewer visual distractions. Fireplaces are essential and large, often embellished with beautiful tiles and surrounded at least on one side with comfortable sofas, and knitted throws. Accent pieces like pottery and art, plants and cushions imbue spaces with life and character. In fact, they stand out more dramatically in a space designed this way. Just changing a few accent pieces occasionally is enough to refresh the spaces, as in the renewal of nature through the seasons of the year.

In Second Life® there are a number of designers such as Pep Sarab of Concept} and Momentous Resident of Revival to name but two, who produce the most beautiful examples of typical Scandinavian design. Momentous has produced furniture and décor with clean lines, natural fabrics, iconic styling using wood and linen, and the artful treatment of utilitarian items such as laundry racks, baskets, cube cushions and piles of books. His palette beds and minimalist sofas are typical in style. Pep has designed some interesting minimal modular sofas in neutral shades, accessories such as mirrors and wooden art pieces, carved wooden bowls, stylish leather and wood armchairs, a wooden bath tub and even a beautiful ceramic spa. HIDEKI sticks very much to the Scandinavian design ethos, both in furniture and housing. Although not all the work is Nordic in design, there are some sets well worth collecting. A lot of items are specific to various gacha but in that way they aren't expensive and perhaps searching Marketplace for resellers can be a good source. Again, it's those clean stylised lines with lots of wood, natural fabrics and beautifully styled items of décor. The cabins are typical to those one might find in rural areas of the Nordic countryside and the living room furniture would be wonderful if translated to a real life setting. Winter DiPrima of LAQ has designed a typical modern day Scandinavian house, viewing recommended. It's actually a villa and needs a 1024 sqm parcel but it would be an excellent start to decorating a house in this style. There's two floors, a balcony, wooden cladding and wooden blinds to the windows. A tiled fireplace and outdoor lamps are included. The Challen

ravel is a rather an emotive subject and can be experienced variously as an exciting adventure, the culmination of a longing to be here or there, and even a master class in stress should journeys not go to plan. Train stations are not only termini for the trains themselves but on a philosophical level they can encapsulate our emotions, expressing the arrivals and departures of life. Architecturally speaking, train stations consist of tracks, platforms, subways, train sheds and a station building known as the head house. It's where we pick up our tickets and while away the time waiting for trains to arrive and depart. There's often a tingle of exhilaration or conversely trepidation in the air, as folks eat hurried lunches and sip at teacups in waiting rooms or pretend to read the headlines of the day or simply think about the journey ahead of them. If they are waiting for dear ones to arrive, then the whole atmosphere can seem dreamy and cosy, the subdued sunlight trickling in through station windows leaving puddles of light on the utilitarian platforms. Or maybe the season outside has turned colder and the soft snow that may even alleviate the noise of cities, is huddled up

conspiratorially against the glass panes. The head house is usually a well thought out element of the station it supports and may range from a simple ground floor building as in the more rural stations, or it may be a grand thing of epic proportions that can leave us unmoved as we scurry about like ants beneath its imposing structure intent on getting somewhere, if only time would stand still. A station building may actually turn out to be a true masterpiece of architecture, in which case we ourselves may stand still for a while and take it all in. The arches and porticos rising high above us, the artfully placed windows that enable light to flow down into the concourse like a veritable waterfall even on a rainy day, the dominant facade suggesting strength and security of purpose â&#x20AC;&#x201C; yes, the company has been here for decades, dear passengers, and we'll get you safely to your destination on time and in comfort. Well, at least the suggestion is there if not always the action! Typical station buildings have side entrances off the adjoining road or square where they are located, and

near the entrance there will be a ticket counter, ticket machines or both. People line up in queues depending on their personalities, either stoically waiting their turn, scuffing the concourse with their shoes impatiently or treating the whole thing as a joyful occasion as they hold the hands of children and partners. They are the fortunate travellers, off on holiday to sunnier climes or maybe going home for the holidays... erstwhile students clutching gifts and dragging along overpacked haversacks merrily as they go. Films producers and novelists sometimes make use of train stations for particular scenes. There are some quite famous works, in which dramas are played out against the backdrop of impersonal platforms or steam trains waiting restlessly to depart and chugging out vast amounts of vapour in direct proportion to the tears in the eyes of the participants. Tolstoy's “Anna Karenina” comes to mind, a salutary tale of introspection and missed opportunities. You have to love the Russian writers for their take on why folks act like they do. Vronsky gets into trouble when he spots Anna at the Moscow station, a married lady on her way home. He notices her sympathetic smokey grey eyes as if appearing out of a mist and he's hooked. It can only end in tears but you should read the book or watch the film if you want a treat. This is the romance of travel, the chance contact on a busy station platform that happens out of the blue and it exists, if only in our imaginations and the way in which these iconic buildings affect us. Train stations can even accommodate mass exoduses. Every year China's 130 million migrant workers travel back to their home villages for the New Year's holiday. It's the largest human migration in the world. There's a film directed by Lixin Fan called, “Last Train Home” and it's fascinating, a documentary that won awards for it's portrayal of a rural couple who travel back from the city to their home in order to celebrate the Spring Festival. One scene shows the couple waiting at a packed train station with people practically spilling over onto the tracks. The train turns up and there's quite a rush but in a very orderly manner. The couple and their children struggle to improve their lives and the conflict of city and rural life is empathetically explored in the tradition of great storytellers. One of the world's most spectacular train stations is the Grand Central terminal in New York. Built way back in 1913 primarily from granite, it's described as an elegant and elaborately decorated monument to railway history. It has more platforms than any other station, a grand total of 44. It's appeared in many films, including Bad Boys, Carlito's Way and the Godfather, has its own cocktail bar, food market and whispering gallery and is rather Art Deco in style with intricate designs, both inside and out. The astronomical starry ceiling had to be refurbished over a 12 year period, finishing in the autumn of 1996. Imagine the arrivals and departures in such a building, which is practically a village to start with! A whole calendar of events are held there including Thanksgiving Celebrations and Holiday Fairs.

So what do we have in Second LifeÂŽ in the way of train stations? Well, quite a lot. There's a number of railway networks including the GSLR, the Great Second Life railway, which was started up very early on and still exists today. Then there are other standard gauge railways, either on private or Linden Land, supported by residents and Linden Labs. Tulip Tree station is located on the SLRR railway, it's quite large with green tiled platform roof and enticing tracks that lead off into the distance. Quite busy, too, with carriages arriving often. There's also a large map of the network and a wonderful freebie wall with copies of trains you can rez onto the tracks and ride yourself. Its possible to join the National Railway Consortium from here. The network runs over more than 80 regions on the Northern Continent and dates back to 2005. Any resident can use this public facility and it's fully automated. Track laying and maintenance are provided by The Linden Department of Public Works. Okemo Canyon station is on the OSNR network, the Okemo, Nakiska and Southern Railway. It's set in a spectacular snowy gorge and looks rather modern in appearance. A brightly painted train rests on the sidings promising scenic journeys. Glass topped carriages pass along this track fairly regularly and travellers can hop aboard to take the route through the mountains. The station also sports a Wolfhaven Money Tree, not often seen nowadays in Second LifeÂŽ. This network was privately started up by resident Veronica Quackenbush, and later on commissioned by Linden Labs to extend across some of their land. The OSNR now boasts 10 stations running across 13 sims and takes around 22 minutes to traverse, that is if you don't get off to check out the stations. Built on residential land, some notables include the Lionheart Continental Railroad with the main station at Lionheart Pumbaa. An airy glass and concrete entrance leads down steps to the shopping area, newbie orientation course and railway network itself. Travellers are made to feel very welcome. It's easiest to take the lift to B1 for the railway tracks, B2 for the information centre and G to get back to the ground entrance area and hangout area. Pandora, built by resident Jackson Verlack, opened in September of this year and includes a fabulous railway station at the entrance to the sim, viewing recommended. It really sets the scene for a sim that has resort accommodation and runs events in the most beautiful setting of a verdant valley surrounded by snowy mountains. There's even a chair lift that runs up one of the mountains and this leads on to the Pandora Resort Sky Rail. Arriving at the Pandora station, makes the traveller feel full of excitement at the treats to come. A train has just arrived, you can see the last carriage resting at the end of the line. There are copious luggage trolleys on the paved platform waiting to be wheeled off and even soft drinks machines, should you be in need of immediate refreshment. 2. Go into edit mode of the bookcase and Under texture tab and change the color area to an olive green tint. In turn, select the fireplace's face alone to turn the color into light yellow to get a nice golden touch. The fireplace has another face where its rounded dot designs can be tinted to give an additional color tint. They were tinted with light red that matches well with the gold. To color out the wall panel behind the fireplace, select those faces separatel y and choose a light black color.

3. Any jewelry can be used to add more details and give furniture a more exotic look. Minimal's Elipse Bracelet was resized to match the edges of the book case and then dragged to four corners to give it a design. In addition, one of Minima's Zima rings was resized, colored and added to the bottom of the fireplace giving the furnace a nice under decoration.

4. Once your main focus is complete, the room is ready for more furnishing. Asilah Decorative Symbols from artisan fantasy gave a nice touch behind each book cases on either side. as well as on the top of the fireplace touching the ceiling. Aria's Verna ruffle was resized to fit over the bookshelves giving it a final touch of elegance. A lot of other details can be added to have a complete room design. Do not forget the glass of Absinthe.
