t feels like only yesterday that the New Year started and now we are already enjoying one (or two) of the new LINDT Gold Bunny Flower edition chocolates.

As always, Liza Gresse bring some inspiration to us in her article on page 12. Some of you might remember the ladies from Trust Bank and enjoy this article immensely. We have launched a new competition with Granny Mouse Country House and Spa in the Midlands. Really a place to consider for some well-deserved rest. The interior design feature with Ashley Maclachlan from Urban Create is bound to give you some ideas on renovation and added to that, Plascon brings us some ideas on wall colours. Some exciting news on the development front with articles from Rainmaker and Pam Golding Umhlanga on property and development trends, coupled with the exciting new launch of the Business Hub in Sibaya. As we are still enjoying uncharacteristically hot weather for this time of year, we are once again reminded of how truly blessed we are to live in this beautiful stretch of land. Have a blessed Easter!!!

REDEFINING RETIREMENT

A worldwide trend has seen baby boomers become a significant residential market. South Africa specifically, has seen enormous growth in this segment, with people, post school children and in their early 50’s, heading from conventional residential neighbourhoods to secure retirement estates. In general, the market has only recently realised the demand for active living with facilities that suit both young and old retirees, and as a result current demand outstrips supply. In light of this, Glenn Hesse and the Cenprop Dev. team have conceptualised and created a retirement opportunity that effectively ‘ticks all the boxes’ for this market – a superb location, contemporary homes, and an unsurpassed lifestyle. Introducing Lazuli Lifestyle & Retirement Estate. The North Coast of KwaZulu Natal, and more specifically Port Zimbali, has been identified as a true gem on our coastline. It really does present a unique way of life, especially for those entering or in their retirement years – with its pleasant climate, top golf courses, beautiful beaches, upmarket shopping centers, and nearby amenities - it really does have it all. Neighboring the Zimbali Coastal Resort, Lazuli Lifestyle & Retirement Estate owners will enjoy

panoramic views of the ocean, wetlands, indigenous forest, Zimbali golf course and magnificent north facing inland views. Residents at Lazuli will enjoy the perfect balance between privacy and community lifestyle. The estates design allows for an architectural vocabulary which combines contemporary living with traditional values. In close proximity to King Shaka International Airport, the vibrant Umhlanga Village and Gateway Theatre Shopping, as well as the Big 5 Game Reserves to the North, the location truly is amazing. In this pet-friendly estate, residents can enjoy dedicated trails, conservation and wetland areas – all with in the safety of a 24-7 secure perimeter. Due to commence with Phase 1 , the private residents’ clubhouse will be the perfect setting to relax and unwind. The business centre will be equipped with all expected amenities. Active residents can take advantage of a private gym with a steam room and sauna, plus an outdoor heated pool. In addition to this Lazuli will offer a boutique wellness assisted living facility for resident’s convenience. Phase 1 of Lazuli includes 23 spacious 2 bed, 2 bath and 3 bed, 3 bath residences, made up of luxurious open-plan garden villas and free standing hilltop villas, ranging from 174m2 – 314m2. These contempory -styled villas offer direct garage access and boast luxurious finishes throughout. A distinctive blend of modern design

NE

and traditional living is reflected in the generous scale of Lazuli's architecture. Superior interiors are met with flawless finishes and attention to detail in every respect.

Homes in phase 1 are priced between R 2 995 000 and R 5 995 000 The development team behind Lazuli are highly enthusiastic and confident in the imminent release of Phase 2, comprising of 17 freestanding bespoke homes. This soon to be released product signifies a much-anticipated need for discerning clients seeking privacy and space set out on sites ranging from 600m2 -1200m2. Clients will have the opportunity to either acquire a vacant site to develop themselves within an architectural framework or elect to choose from the developers bespoke housing packages as a full turn key solution. This phase is set out in the newly rehabilitated fig and quinine tree forest which embodies the principles of regeneration. Flora and Fauna will be enhanced by strengthening the plant communities into identifiable biomes such as coastal forests, reed beds and lily ponds, to encourage biodiversity. Botanical quality is elevated through species diversity, and formal gardens. With the first homeowners taking occupation in April, Lazuli is poised to set the benchmark in premium lifestyle & retirement living. THE LATEST ADDITION TO THE PALM LAKES FAMILY Without an official launch, Palm Lakes Sugar Ridge, a 33-hectare development, boasting 80 developer sites which will eventually contain 660 sectional title units, was sold out within two months, after Wim and Olivia Sak of Royal Palm Property Holdings broke the news late last year. FAMILY Our families, the single most important part of our lives, their safety and security is of prime importance! Secure estates are still the most viable option

T

he trend for the purchase of homes in secure gated estates is set to continue to grow. Records show that in 2009 there was just over 1700 gated estates in SA, containing approximately 150 000 freehold sites. In 2017 this number was estimated to have expanded to over 8000 with over 430 000 properties. Secure estate properties continue to fetch on average a 30% premium against comparable homes. Home prices on estates are inclined to be less volatile and are, as such, generally safer investments. When comparing estates, there is an interesting new trend towards smaller estates or the creation of smaller neighbourhoods, contained within the larger estates. Moving home into an estate was daunting for us as a family and we had all the common concerns of trying to adjust our lives in terms of pets, privacy, proximity to neighbours and the rules and regulations. All this was a big concern for us and we

10

were worried we might not be suited to this. Admittedly it was, at first, an adjustment for us, added to this we also welcomed our eldest daughter into the world on the first night we moved, but these concerns were soon overcome by the numerous advantages and the realisation that most people also have the same needs and concerns that we had. For us the small estate we moved into was perfect. Sheffield Beach Estate, which is a small boutique estate, is very secure, being bordered on three sides by other secure estates, these being Loxley, Zululami and Mont Calm. It has 37 freehold homes, loads of open spaces and is both child and pet friendly. When buying into an estate, it is essential to assess what is most important to you as a family. With the ever increasing number of estates, that offer a big choice in lifestyles and facilities. The single biggest drawcard still being security,

this is an important consideration and the estate's security setup should be questioned. It is also worthwhile looking at the estate’s rules and regulations and how the homeowners’ association police these. It is important to ensure that there is a well run homeowners’ association, so request a look at the financials. Check out if the facilities offered are suitable, as these usually come at a cost that are included in the levies. Our spectacular corner of SA with its beautiful coastline, now offers some of the top secure estates in the country. We are spoiled with so many options in terms of styles, size, facilities and with the added benefit of being close to numerous shopping malls, great schools, a new international airport, first class hospitals and medical facilities and a short drive to the spectacular Drakensberg and a wide selection of first class game parks on our doorstep,. We are truly spoilt.

Have you ever tried to turn back the clock? Have you ever wished you did things differently? We all have...

B

ack in the 70’s, at the tender age of eight, a financial institution called Trust Bank, made an inerasable impression in my mind. The branding colours of this bank’s logo were black and yellow. The logo depicted a little animated man wearing dark spectacles. The MD of the bank was a flamboyant businessman called Jan Marais. This bank came to my 8 year old attention not because of its banking capabilities, but because of the beautiful ladies that worked there. Unknown to me at that tender age, it was compulsory as per company regulations to wear lots of make-up, beehives and very, very short dresses. To me, the ladies working in that bank were the ultimate embodiment of beauty. Trust Bank was well known for its sexy ladies.

The distance between our dreams and reality is action.” Ben Francis

At age eight, my Grade 2 teacher asked us to write a short piece on: “What do you want to be when you grow-up?.” When you are only eight years old, you have no limiting thoughts on what you can be or achieve. Your belief in yourself is absolute and your confidence in your abilities limitless. You can be anything you choose. You can be a policeman, a firefighter, a ballerina or a famous singer. None of these choices are limited by societal beliefs or conditioning. At age eight you are free of prejudice, and income has no significant impact on your career choice. Excitedly I got down to the job of writing down my future aspirations and dreams. I wrote: “I have given quite a lot of thought on what I want to be when I grow up. If I grow up to be beautiful, I would like to work at Trust Bank and wear short dresses, lots of make-up with my hair all teased up. If I grow up to be ugly, I would like to become a teacher.” Well, needless to say, my little essay evoked quite a response from my teachers and headmaster, who was very amused. As you might have gathered from my resume I did not grow up to become a Trust Bank girl, quite the opposite. Looking back, I do not regret this either. The point is, we were all once eight years old and we all had dreams for our lives. WE ALL DREAMED AT A YOUNG AGE ABOUT OUR FUTURE “One day I am going to manage my own business – a huge business!” “I am going to be a world renowned sports star” “I’m going to become a great lawyer/architect/doctor.” – the list goes on… ONE DAY! For most people dreams are just something that will happen one day. Then life happens with all the responsibilities of being an adult and before you know it, “ONE DAY” is staring you right in the eye, in the form of old age and a bag full of unfulfilled dreams. The one thing we know about the future is that it comes only one day at a time. - Jeff Rich Most of the time, these unfulfilled dreams are accompanied by bitterness, blame and resentment. Endless excuses are raised for not realizing our dreams: “My child keeps me too busy.” “My budget does not allow it.” “I am overworked.” I have too many responsibilities.” At the moment I just can’t.” The list is endless. The truth is, winners make their dreams come true - they set themselves very specific goals, set realistic plans in motion, and then work hard and achieve the life that they envisioned for themselves. Winners do not blame, they take responsibility for their actions, they make conscious choices and they show resilience when everybody else bails out. Life is a wonderful gift, but life is not always fair. We do not have control over everything that happens to us, but we do control how we react to this. A setback in life, such as death, divorce, bankruptcy or retrenchment might not be what you dreamed of when you were only eight, but life happens. Some people use these setbacks as excuses for not achieving their dreams, whilst the winners realize that they have a choice to remain focussed, to remain positive and to move on to fulfilling their dreams despite the setbacks.

DREAMING OF

ONE

Liz Murray, an American inspirational speaker who is notable for having been accepted by Harvard University despite being homeless in her high school years said: “Like my mother, I was always saying, 'I'll fix my life one day.' It became clear when I saw her die without fulfilling her dreams that my time was now or maybe never.” I firmly believe that life is about choice, and that you choose where and how you want to live your life. The following behaviours, difficult as it may be, can help us turn dreams into reality:

1 2 3

Accountability: Winners have strong, positive attitudes. This helps them survive the challenges in life, this determines their will to succeed, and they never give up or allow setbacks to derail them from fulfilling their dreams. They take responsibility for their lives and they determine their own altitude. They are the people that do not wait for the storm to pass, but keep on dancing in the rain. Setting goals: Winners link goals to their dreams and work with passion to fulfil them. Have you set your goals yet? Napoleon Hill once said: “A goal is a dream with a deadline” Winners are very aware that their dreams have deadlines. They take action, and put plans in place that they follow step-by-step to achieve their dreams. Courage and resilience: Winners do not wait for ONE DAY to full fill their dreams. They believe in TODAY. Winners know that it takes courage and sacrifice to make dreams a reality. They challenge themselves and keep going even when the stakes are down. They carry their own swords within.

PROPERTY FORECAST

2018 has begun with gusto: the appointment of Cyril Ramaphosa and the resignation of President Zuma, has resulted in renewed confidence across all sectors of the financial and property markets. Indeed, for the first time in years, South Africa is filled with hope and possibility. The indicators that 2018 is poised for better growth than 2017, which experienced a short-lived recession, are therefore strong: the Rand has already strengthened and there are talks of a rate cut, both of which reflect and endorse this positive sentiment.

K

ZN in particular is ripe with possibility: with Cape Town facing a devastating water crisis, the allure of the beautiful Cape, has become less appealing, and KZN has taken centre stage as a more attractive and far more affordable alternative.

16

It is interesting to note that the property price inflation that Cape Town has experienced over the past four years has largely been driven by Johannesburg semigration, and not by international investors. Given that our local investors have the capacity to drive demand

to such an extent, we anticipate a similar influx of families to the North Durban coastline in the coming years. Most notably, Johannesburg commuters are seeking the lifestyle offering in KZN, which, in my opinion, simply cannot be beaten. Our Pam Golding North Durban office experienced record sales in January 2018 – outperforming the company’s Atlantic Seaboard area for the first time in history. This we feel is a small microcosm of things to come. Several factors have converged at just the right time, to launch

KZN into the limelight. For example: Oceans in Umhlanga won international acclaim for its architectural design, and this has opened up the global arena for KZN as a property player. In addition, the far-reaching impact that Sibaya, as a precinct, has had on local and foreign investors has given KZN a platform to display its virtues. Add to this the fact that Durban has won best lifestyle city in SA for the past three consecutive years and it is not surprising that the KZN coastline has piqued the interest of the most discerning investors.

2 018 ...the Household Sector will remain financially constrained, searching for home affordability as a result, and this will lead to the lower priced value bands continuing to outperform the higher end this year.” Against this backdrop, we foresee a more buoyant 2018, particularly in the North Coast corridor of KZN stretching from Durban North through to Ballito. However, economists have warned that the good news of the new ANC leadership may be short-lived if perception and expectation is not underpinned by results. Thus, there will continue to be an air of caution that pervades the markets, and hence price inflation may be gradual, particularly at the upper end, as buyers and sellers both find themselves in a more rational negotiating space. We predict it to be a year of fair trading – fair results on both sides of the spectrum, with the lower end of the market experiencing more growth than the upper end. According to the FNB Property Barometer, the top end of the market has experienced the most significant price growth slowdown since 2014, with inflation dropping from 11% in 2014 to 5,1% last year. The lower end of the market conversely traded better towards the latter half of 2017 with price inflation of 7.1% in Q3 of 2017 to 7.6% in Q4 of 2017. The middle and upper bands declined in the last quarter of 2017 from 4,9% down to 4,7% and 5,6% to 5,1% respectively. Thus, Loos concludes that whilst sentiment in 2018 has improved, “the Household Sector will remain financially constrained, searching for home affordability as a result, and this will lead to the lower priced value bands continuing to outperform the higher end this year.” Against this interesting backdrop of optimism buffered by the reality of financial conservatism, there are a few trends that we expect to gain momentum this year. The first is the emergence of a stronger middle-class of buyers from a more representative demographic and the second is the widening of the first time buyer pool. We are hopeful that more entry-level

stock will be offered into the market, as developers deliver products that meet the needs of the price band that sits below the R1 million bracket. We have been in discussions with several developers who are researching the viability of sectional title complexes with smaller, trendier units at cheaper ticket prices to cater for the young professional market. This will drive activity levels and be an enabler for those who have found traditional market prices unattainable.

Security estates will continue to be popular and the move to smaller lock-up-and-go lifestyle options will keep trending. The densification of established residential suburbs may also gain traction, as developers seek to consolidate and redevelop in areas where there is a need for small boutique estates. We may also start to see modernisation of existing complexes, where there is a shortage of land for further development. With Cape Town experiencing a lull in development activity due to its water restrictions, we anticipate developers turning to KZN for opportunities. Thus, whilst we were previously concerned about the over-supply of developments in the North Coast area, and the political instability that wreaked havoc with the markets last year, we now anticipate that given the more favourable political climate, demand will meet supply and there will be a healthy mix of new stock and new buyers entering the market simultaneously. In conclusion, 2018 has certainly begun with an air of excitement and optimism, and KZN is benefiting from a bouquet of factors that have come together in perfect synchronicity, to herald it as SA’s number one growth node.

STEFAN BOTHA Managing Director | Rainmaker Marketing Rainmaker Marketing, based in Kwa-Zulu Natal, is Africa’s leading property development marketing company. Stefan Botha strives to redefine the way property developments are marketed. Botha’s innovative approach to property marketing stems from a passion for property and a commitment to push the boundaries and create unique solutions.

DEVELOPMENT

TRENDS Text Stefan Botha | Firm Rainmaker Marketing | T: 087 231 1588 E: info@rainmakermarketing.co.za | www.rainmakermarketing.co.za

My vantage point is very closely related to the residential development space and this is where KZN is such a formidable force at present and for this reason, is attracting investment from around SA and abroad.

I

am often asked where people should be investing, and I firmly believe that there are 3 areas in KZN that will consistently outperform any other. These are: greater Umhlanga, Sibaya Coastal Precinct and Ballito / Salt Rock. Those who invest in an estate there will not only find good options but will also experience higher capital appreciation and rental demand than any other region. The last 12 months have been characterised by big national players entering the KZN property market, mainly within the areas mentioned above, resulting in significant land acquisitions and very strategic development plans. This is further evidence of the province’s attractiveness to investors and the market’s buoyancy, despite the inescapable political uncertainties we face. It’s no coincidence that Balwin, Amdec (the team behind Melrose Arch and the Evergreen Lifestyle retirement brand) and Abland have all invested into KZN in quick succession and it’s a real sign that our home-turf is now being taken seriously. 2018 will continue to be an interesting period, and I believe there are 4 key trends that will shape the development landscape this year.

22

The attraction of KZN is that property rates are much cheaper than the Cape Town, and this is one of the major reasons why the trend of ‘semigration’ - the term that refers to people seeking a better quality of life elsewhere in the country - is being seen in KZN and this bodes well for our residents and property market..”

1. Price-point The 2017 Cape Town property boom saw buyers sacrificing space for a desirable address. As a result, developers created compact spaces to bring down the overall price point of the property whilst still maintaining a strong price per m² necessary for the development of the product to remain financially viable. This model works well for the investor too as rental income is directly related to the number of bedrooms as opposed to the size of the unit, which means investors are paying less and still fetching a similar rental income. In the last 12 months R2.7 billion in residential transfers occurred in the greater Ballito area, and 80% of these are in secure estates. Most interestingly, the total number of property transfers has increased by 18% to 1002 units. This is an indication that affordability is more of a consideration as the demand for the area increases. Affordability is the biggest challenge for any new development and going forward there will be a major trend towards people willing to compromise on size in order to secure an estate address matched to their affordability and aspiration. Watch out for the growing success of smaller developments popping up within new and existing developments which will offer smaller sectional-title spaces or compact home-package options at a more affordable price. 2. Investor returns The short-term rentals market is growing rapidly as property owners (investors and primary residential owners) seek to 'sweat' their assets to help service the unavoidable costs of levies, rates and maintenance. The owner-benefits of business models like Airbnb will continue to evolve, and 2018 will see developers becoming more astute in how they configure their product offerings to ensure that spaces, and architecture, are optimised to attract short-term rentals whilst also strategically seeking to allay any concerns around security or privacy. Leading developers will also continue to evolve to offer smartly packaged turn-key furniture options, and in-house rental management solutions, to provide a compelling ‘plug-and-play’ solution for any investor wanting to rent a unit out from day one of occupation. 3. The key differentiator As more development products become available, developers can no longer expect to successfully launch and sell a development unless they offer something unique. It’s vital for developers to identify a product’s key differentiator and build on that– it could be an exceptional location, unique price, facilities, an unusual natural attribute or stunning sea views. The residential market is savvy, and relatively spoilt for choice, which is why developers need to find that key differentiator upfront. This is why it is so important to do proper research beforehand and formulate a product around what the market demands. This is critical before any product can go to market. This will result in the continuous evolution of new developments in both product offering and packaging. 4. Retirement One can no longer think about residential development in KZN without considering the retirement market. Since Tongaat Hulett launched their Retire KZN campaign 18 months ago, over R1.1 billion has been directly invested into KZN’s retirement market by retirement developers and purchasers alike. The balance of 2018 will see further progress in this area with new retirement players entering the market complementing the existing mix of retirement developers. Today, retirement developers are reconceptualising living for the latter years by offering ‘lifestyle retirement’- a far cry from the stigma of old-age living which previously existed. KZN can be proud that it has garnered the attention of leading retirement developers set on transforming the concept of retirement and upping the ante on onsite care facilities whilst providing amenities which outperform many residential estates. The rest of 2018 will see significant strides in evolving KZN into the leading retirement destination in Africa. 23

LUXE chatted with Ashley Maclachlan, co-owner of Urban Create about the interior design revamps that are under way at the Isibindi Lodges.

K

osi Forest Lodge, a haven of crisp, cool comfort in the sand forests, is the only private accommodation in Kosi Bay Nature Reserve. Here you will find that treading gently is a natural way of life. Glamping at its best, here you live amongst the trees, surrounded by birdsong. Oil lamps are lit along the forest paths creating a warm glow and connection with the ancient past of this unspoilt land.

This is the setting where local business owner from Urban Create Design Interiors, could express her passion for interior decorating. “My love for the bush and passion for beautiful natural spaces led me, through a good friend to meet with the owners of Isibindi, Brett & Paige Gehren, says Ashley. With the mandate to refresh and upgrade the Isibindi Lodges, it was the perfect canvas to create awesome spaces with flowing layouts, beautiful lighting, textured fabrics and unique decor. With Kosi Forest Lodge we have added these touches to an already beautiful space to enhance the experience at this magical lodge. The brief was simply to keep with the natural theme, but give a pop of colour and an updated feeling to the lodge. Ashley specified bright green barstools, scatter cushions with dung beetles, the plantation rugs and natural beaded light fittings, mirror frames made from timber and a few locally bought craft and decor items to support the local community. Watch this space for upgrades to Thonga Beach Lodge, Rhino Ridge Lodge and Zulu Lodge,; all part of the Isibindi Group, which Urban Create are currently busy with.

There are no lines in nature, only areas of colour, one against another. LEdouard Manet

We are based in Umhlanga Rocks and we do corporate and residential interiors throughout KZN. CRACKING THE COLOUR CODE

Who would have thought?

Text Melanie Rosettenstein | Photography: Supplied by Plascon | T: 083 708 6078 | E: media@huntpr.co.za

O

n choosing paint for my bedroom at the hardware the other day, I was feeling more moved to head for the door just before someone offered some help. “So what look are you going for?” asked the eager sales assistant. With enough decorating experience to fill my grandmother’s antique thimble, my answer was plainly, “I like blue.” Well, if you’ve visited the hardware recently, you would know that blue doesn’t really narrow it down. So, I did what any wannabe DIYer would do. I phoned a friend.

even more than I was hoping for. What I discovered were paint colours like calming Velvet Coast (B6-B1-4) and Hudson (26) that balance each other beautifully with a warm, contemporary effect that is not only easy on the eye but creates a restful space. Needless to say, I was back on my way to the hardware, eager and ready to get my paint colours mixed. On the product side, I chose Plascon’s Cashmere that has a plush matt finish, and best of all it has low odour, so we don’t even have to move out of the room after painting.

Getting her on the line (yes - she happens to be a decorator), she gave me the most important painting advice I have ever received. As I expressed my woes over colour choice and what I was trying to achieve but not really being able to make a final decision, first she told me to calm right down and then explained that the paint and colour process is quite simple. Taking a deep breath, I listened as she explained: before I choose my paint, I need to get the three ‘Fs’ in place: fabric, furniture and flooring. “It’s easier to match your paint to the three Fs than to match the three Fs to your paint,” she said. “Hello?” I thought. Put like that, it seemed so much simpler and logical and so, with my next trip to the hardware postponed, I headed straight to the local interiors store instead, in search of fabric. Feeling like a cross between Suzelle DIY and Martha Stewart, I left with the most gorgeous soft blue, green and grey paisley printed fabric for our headboard and a blue grey for the blinds.

That said, choosing the core colour for my bedroom threw me another (unexpected) curveball because, of course I’d settled on white and not all whites are created equal apparently. Said to be the colour of peace and purity, in these busy times, it’s the perfect colour to create a room where simplicity prevails. So getting back on the phone, I decided to go straight to the paint experts and I was fortunate enough to get some great guidance from Plascon’s Media Stylist and Colour Specialist Kerstin Eser. “White changes so much in its environment so it’s important to consider your flooring, fabric, furniture, lighting and other colours in the room before choosing your paint,” she said. Kersti (we were on nickname-basis by the end of the conversation), told me that Antique Petal (43) is a new, versatile contemporary white with a warm chalky undertone for that clean, uncluttered look while Plaster (61) is a cooler off white that creates a subdued backdrop for furniture and fabric to pop. Who would have thought? Eventually, I went with the Plaster and was thrilled with the outcome, a beautifully blue boudoir that has a restful and rejuvenating quality to it.

They say there is nothing like a beautifully considered combination of colours to move your inner chakras.

Little did I know, it was only when I opened my mood file and paged through the beautiful Plascon 2018 Colour Forecast, (any aspiring home-makeover-diyer will know what I’m referring to), did I realise that I’d inadvertently found my colour match in Plascon’s Soft Composition colour story. “Put down the phone!” I said – to myself of course. For the first time, this source of inspiration and insight started to make sense to me. Lingering over the contemplative Soft Composition colours and images, the combination of muted hues with bold accents and the end result of a warm, welcoming minimalism spoke to my heart. I had found a perfect match for my haven to retreat from my crazy schedule of mom’ing, wife’ing and working. Exactly what I needed and

So, with the bedroom completed, relaxed, in my zone and totally chuffed, I’m ready to tackle my next project which just happens to be just a tad more challenging. I’ll be finding a way to integrate my crazy colourful coffee picker painting bought in Guatemala into my home without it looking too gaudy. Please visit the Plascon website for more information on how you can create a perfectly appointed living space that resonates with you and your needs. https://plascon.com/colour-inspiration/ 29

Every day that I am alone in my studio , creating and working on a sculpture, I know I am so blessed to be able to do daily what I love.

BRONZE FIRM, STUBBORN, STRONG, ENDURING

LUXE Magazine met up with Sarah Richards to chat about her love for nature, bronzes and humankind

S

arah Richards is an established South African artist and sculptor living in KwaZulu-Natal. She has been creating bronze sculptures for the past 20 years. Her passion lies in rendering sculpture which shows an attention to detail, and which give an impression of movement and animation. Sarah explores many different subjects; this comes from her fascination with the details and construction of the world. Inspired by public sculpture and monuments around the world Sarah enjoys the challenge of creating world class sculpture for the public commissions she has received. Her smaller figure sculptures include children at play, small figures and nudes. LM: Sarah, of all materials that you could choose to work with, why Bronze? SR: I model the original in wax, a clay based plasticine. The casting process allows me to create the original with texture and details, and this is then all captured in the final bronze. Bronze, a copper alloy, is such an amazing material, strong and can be shown indoors, as well as enduring outdoor weather and water elements. LM: Where does your love of nature originate and how do you represent this in your artwork? SR: How can one not be inspired by nature! There is a never ending source of shapes, textures and patterns , not to mention the interesting creatures that scuttle about, inspiring wonder at their shapes and mannerisms. My work is very diverse. I haven’t been able to ‘specialise’ in only one genre. I bounce between, animals, birds and other creatures, to the human figure, both monumental and small. I usually do detailed studies, and where I can, make them life-size, to best capture their essence or power.

LM: You have started a new range of artworks.... Tell us some more SR: The new sculptures, "Recognition", "Touching Flow" and "Hold gently what you wish to grow old with" are a culmination of all that I have created already. Many years of acquiring skills and gaining confidence in the creation of figures of various sizes, and creatures of different descriptions. I have constantly explored and search for some way to express this invisible wordless ‘something’, which has been desperately and persistently willing itself to be ‘seen’. These new works are real but also imaginary. They touch on what I know and don’t know. And I play with the dichotomies of life, that can make things so confusing and yet so interesting. What we can touch , and what is imagined, and where do they cross over. I am attracted to the natural environment, its creatures and the hidden flow of energy that is inherent within it. The works are also an exploration of self. Of how I view my physical body, but not necessarily how others see it. The feminine embodies the energies of Mother Nature, with its wildness and changeability, birthing and dying.

The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. What is called resignation is confirmed desperation. From the desperate city you go into the desperate country, and have to console yourself with the bravery of minks and muskrats. A stereotyped but unconscious despair is concealed even under what are called the games and amusements of mankind. There is no play in them, for this comes after work. But it is a characteristic of wisdom not to do desperate things.” Henry David Thoreau Walden & Civil Disobedience

I wonder about my relationship with the natural environment: how do I ‘belong’ and connect to it? I observe how the intellect often separates me from this connection, and disrupts my creative flow by excessive analysis and fear.

Jump!

I wonder at the impact that humans have on the world, our selfish disregard to this natural flow: this power and refined beauty. We so often take it for granted and feel separate and often fearful of it. This all seems so absurd, and yet our industrialised perspective pushes us further away. My works are sometimes whimsical, dreamy and playful. But always serious. Of this world and yet imagined. They are a dichotomy, juxtaposing the rational and the irrational. They show my confusion of ideas, my busy brain, and my yearning for something else, a quietness perhaps; something possible that I still need to find, and yet I know I already have. 42

The King Fishers

Mass of Men - Sardine Run

LM: You have done some amazing commissions, one being the well-known "Mass of Men Sardine Run" @ King Shaka Airport. How do you get inspired when doing a commission? SR : The title of the work is from a famous quote of Henry David Thoreau. As I was working on designing, painting and placing the fish into its massing swirl, I found myself thinking how humans behave in such similar ways. We follow other people and our 'so-called’ leaders blindly. We head in a direction that does not ultimately get us anywhere. And when something bad happens to us we cluster together, panic and then just repeat our mistakes again - over and over. LM: And now for a difficult question, what is your favourite piece? SR: At the moment that is easy to answer, although tomorrow I may give you a different answer! The first of my new works called Recognition – maquette. Something in me clicked and I started to see a way through to expressing an inner ’ knowing’. Its difficult for me to really say what that is or why the work works for me – one of those wordless things that had to be made. It is a maquette (small study) because I envision these works to be life-size or larger, and hope someday that they inspire a sponsor to help me realise this dream. LM: Do you have a mentor/artist that inspires you? Who do you get your inspiration from? SR: I studied art at school and later at Durban Technikon. Then I travelled for 4 years, visiting galleries and museums when I could to further my art education. I have been exposed to so much that is inspiring, that now I am not sure what has been more influential or not. An artist like Pablo Picasso, who was so prolific, and never stopped exploring different materials and techniques. Willem de Kooning, who explored use of texture, and colour in a uniquely playful way. Rodin, and his beautiful sculptural figures that have a loose yet realistic energy. But mostly I get inspiration from the world around me, the natural and human world, based on my experiences and what I have seen, or thought. LM: Where can our readers get hold of you or view your artwork? SR: I have several galleries around Durban, Imbizo Gallery, Ballito, Makiwa Gallery in Umhlanga and the Green gallery in Mount Edgecombe. You can visit me in my studio in the KZN midlands (by appointment only). Or easier still, have a look at my website www.sarahrichards.co.za where my full portfolio of works can be found.

Location Sheffield Beach, KZN North Coast

T

he owners of this beautiful home originally moved from Cape Town to the popular North Coast in the search of more space and to get back to nature again. This was a luxury that they could not afford in the Cape at that point in their lives.

The brief to the architect, Lisa Rorich was a home that would let the outside in‌ completely, so that wherever you are, be it the loo or the kitchen, you have a strong sense of the outdoors and the freedom of space given to us by nature. The climate on the North Coast lends itself wholeheartedly to outdoor living, and this home embraces this entirely. The owners were drawn to barn-style architecture from early on and also wanted timber facades. When Lisa showed them the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban, they knew it was exactly what they wanted. Lisa came up with a design that set walls of transparent glass against solid panels of wood, giving a feeling of living in a freestanding timber barn, but still allowing nature to enter through the transparent tall windows and over-sized sliding doors. The budget they had was tight, so the barn concept and structure was exactly that of a farming shed. This is primarily designed and used for agriculture and to house livestock. So, the skeleton and roof went up first and the walls and glass were added later on.

One of the beautiful homes, which forms part of the Luxury Coastal Escapes collection, opened their doors to the LUXE team for some insight into the owners' reasons for moving to the North Coast of KZN and their passion for nature 44

The owners live a very paired down and simple life. Since they have been together, they have moved houses, Provinces and Countries more than they would like to remember. The upside of these moves is that they wilted down on unnecessary clutter and possession. This allows for a refreshing feeling where strangers feel at home in their space, a very interesting concept! The home is an eclectic mix of old and new arts and furniture. A vintage dresser in the main bedroom was given to them by a dear friend and has taken up a special place in 4 different homes over time. They have a set of sweet rocking

armchairs handed down from their parents and a collection of art; some from local artists and photographers and some from a trip to Texas a couple of years ago. Even with a tight budget, there was no skimping on quality. They designed the wooden vanities in the bathrooms themselves and got a local carpenter to make them up to save costs, but used good quality poplar treated with a first class product. The bathtubs are pre-loved, but beautifully restored to their former glory and these interact lovingly with the modern vanities and basins.

A collection of artwork, some from local artists and photographers.

One of the most surprising spaces in the home is the guest loo. Usually these are pokey little rooms designed out of pure necessity, tucked away in an awkward place, but this one is unique in that it is spacious, with black shutters that open up from floor to ceiling with beautiful views of the garden and indigenous bush beyond. The main bedroom is also amazing with floor to ceiling glass allowing a stunning view of the bush and valley. Say the owners: “Weekends at home are our favourite, more often than not spent pottering in the garden, always with music playing in the background and the smell of a freshly lit fire, always a crumpled newspaper on the couch and our little girl chasing around the house with the dogs."

With an eclectic mix of new and old furniture, the vintage dresser in the main bedroom has taken pride of place in four different homes

The Loxley Estate home featured in this edition of LUXE Magazine has been sourced by Luxury Coastal Escapes and is part of their collection of luxury holiday homes both on the KZN Dolphin Coast and in the Cape. Luxury Coastal Escapes only selects one in four homes that it values and each home is vetted before being photographed and added to our exclusive collection. We pride ourselves on our attention to detail in both preparing homes and welcoming our Guests so we can ensure that first impressions always count. Hotel grade white linen, luxurious towels, Wi-Fi, DSTV, daily Maid services, welcome basket with flowers & wine along with a dedicated Luxury Coastal Escapes team to assist throughout Guests stay is just the cherry on top. 2018 has started with a boom and the demand for our large beach front houses has been phenomenal. If you own a unique or luxurious beach house along the KZN Dolphin Coast that you would like to rent out for just a few weeks or more during the year, then we would love to hear from you. Luxury Coastal Escapes is very strict with it's Guest policy and homes can not be rented out for functions or parties, however the trend with our enquiries is families (Grandparents, Grandchildren, Moms & Dads) wanting to gather on a weekend or holiday to spend quality time together. There is generally a reason for the family wanting to gather, may it be a family members birthday, Christening, overseas family members returning home or just a general break from day to day life. The large 6 and 7 bedrooms homes on our collection are perfect to accommodate the gatherings, with pool (with net for kids safety), high security for peace of mind, sea views and easy beach access along with entertaining space for all the family. We are very excited to announce that Luxury Coastal Escapes will be expanding into Plettenberg Bay over the next few months. Watch this space for more information on our gorgeous and growing selection of Plett homes

WOMEN 360 T

he Woman 360 events, held in Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg, introduced guests to all things WOMAN. The guests started their journey when they entered the Moroccan Market where a varied selection of hand picked must haves was on sale. Visitors carried on their journey by entering the Fashion Station – a vibrant and entertaining fashion factory presented by some of the most talented up-and-coming South African designers. Set in an old-world Railway Station, live “mannequins” exhibited some of the young designers’ garments for sale on the station platform. Spontaneous appearances from station models added movement and elegance to the environment. A Parisian themed relaxation lounge provided guests with an opportunity to taste some wines presented from a selection of South African wine farms taking part in the event.

A new age of eventing has taken South Africa by storm! Sun International are leading the way with the designer Sun Park eventing arenas which have been constructed at all their major casino venues throughout South Africa. To celebrate the launch of the Sun Park arenas, a number of new age event experiences were designed to demonstrate the incredible versatility and dynamics of these eventing environments 50

The event included the official road-show representing the Miss South Africa national recruitment program, and exhibitors endeavoured to present a mix of women related products, services and entertainment that was both interesting and pleasing to the visitors that are part of the first Woman 360 experience. The Woman 360 umbrella showcased a range of pertinent exhibits and demonstrations covering the following fashion trends ... active wear, make-up and make-overs, henna art, brow and lash stylisation as well as fitness and training techniques. In the heart of the Women 360 experience, visitors encountered a charming and stylish Oyster & Champagne Garden where the regional judging of the Miss South Africa pageants were hosted. Women 360 is dedicated to presenting a totally positive, constructive, educational and entertaining platform, showcasing a variety of options available for women who wish to explore new avenues to enrich and enhance their lives.

GINGER W

e all know how easy it is to overeat; one (please feel free to triple any numbers here if I am underestimating) too many mince pies, an extra dollop of ice cream, snacking on chips and dips around the pool and the very festive sipping of cocktails – again just the one… of course! Well, all that festivity leads to a very unhappy tummy and quickly too. Bloating, cramping, heartburn and either constipation or diarrhoea! Ginger has long been praised for its remarkable ability to assist each and every digestive complaint, let’s take a closer look. Perhaps in one of these paragraphs here you can find your answer. Ginger is known to reduce inflammation. This is good news for anyone who battles with irritation in the bowel and sluggish digestion which can cause bloating. This bowel irritation is usually due to inflammation and as you sip on your ginger tea the swelling reduces, thus reducing the pressure and reducing the associated pain. Try to grate some fresh ginger into your evening meal just before serving.

Ginger is a favourite remedy that most of us know and has been used for years - slices of GINGER seeped in hot water, which is then sipped slowly, whenever we have nausea and other digestive complaints. BUT do you know of ginger’s other remarkable benefits?

In South Africa heartburn is so common that an estimated 2.5 million people have this health complaint. Ginger helps to prevent acid from being regurgitated into the oesophagus, causing the burn due to the gastro-protective mechanism. The helicobacter pylori bacteria which have been linked to heartburn may be the cause of your heartburn. Well, did you know that Ginger has a brilliant antibacterial property killing off offending bacteria? Super Exciting! Looking to lose weight? One of the secrets to losing weight and feeling full while eating less is to eat nutrient dense foods. When your food has an abundance of nutrients, your body signals your hormones to let the body know it’s full. But! When you eat a healthy meal are you actually absorbing all of the beneficial nutrients? Sometimes even with good intentions, even with healthy eating only between 10-90 percent of the vitamins and minerals from your food gets absorbed. Look no further than the humble Ginger again, which has been known to boost nutrient absorption! Add some Zingiber zing to your next smoothie or fresh juice. Ginger also acts as a diuretic, great for a quick drop on the scales if your need to fit into a slinky LBT. Keep yourself properly hydrated, and be sure to drink an extra glass of water to account for your ginger intake. Eat ginger toward the end of your meal so it can cleanse your palate and leave your mouth feeling refreshed. Drink it as a beverage mixed with simple hot water. It’s a great way to flush out your mouth and neutralize a bad taste in your mouth, like the dreaded “coffee breath”. Grate ginger into your food. Add a generous piece to your morning juice. And pop some into your garden, near the tap for an abundant supply. 52

NEXT GENERATION BUSINESS HUB FOR

SIBAYA Text Louise Hunt (Director of Hunt PR) & Melanie Rosettenstein (Senior Copywriter) on behalf of Tongaat Hulett Images Supplied

While the first residents of Sibaya Coastal Precinct’s Ocean Dune development will imminently take occupation of their new apartments, the place-making endeavour continued its trajectory with the launch of its new commercial node, Sibaya Central. Located within the heart of Node One with sweeping views, Sibaya Central responds to the high demand for commercial property on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast’s burgeoning growth corridor.

F

urther to successful residential sales in Node One, Tongaat Hulett recently announced the release of this new investment opportunity. Commercial Head, Chris du Toit says, “We are confident that due to its prime location, this is an extremely attractive investment opportunity and will add a new dimension to the residential community invested here while simultaneously providing new work opportunities close to existing and future residential areas.” Anchored by an interactive central core, Sibaya Central will link the residential component to a thriving commercial space including a potential hotel to complement the development’s overall vision of connecting community – to life, business and nature. With easy access to and from the M4 and N2 highways, upgrades planned for the M27 leading into eMdloti and a direct link via the newly built Heleza Boulevard, Sibaya Central sits plum on the North Coast growth corridor providing a logical link between Durban and uMhlanga in the south and the emerging aerotropolis region in the north. Bridging the gap between these areas and capitalising on a proposed modern and integrated transport system, this commercial hub will form a natural connection for business, leisure and living requirements. “World class public facilities will transform the way that working South Africans currently experience their daily commute. Sibaya Coastal Precinct will be a pivotal benchmark as a caring and connected place to be,” says du Toit. Atria filled with indigenous greenery provide shelter while maintaining a strong visual link with Sibaya Coastal Precinct's abundant natural surroundings.

54

Under-pinned by the enduring ethos of Reconnect. Rediscover, this philosophy will run as a golden thread through Sibaya Central, blurring the lines between the natural and built environments and seeing built forms embedded in the landscape as opposed to imposed upon it through a unique open space lattice system. The organic architectural code creates a contemporary campus-style business setting. Workers will be encouraged to engage with the open spaces and to think beyond the boardroom to a more shared and interactive experience. Urban Planner and Architect Nathan Iyer of Iyer Urban Design says, “There is no longer a need for professionals to be confined to their desks. We have designed a flexible space that responds to these needs and seamlessly responds to the Precinct’s ideal for an integrated and modern urban experience.” The architecture will use external gathering spaces, the development’s open space lattice system, generous green vistas, atriums, courtyards and vertical gardens to bring business, nature and life closer together.

Covering over 1 000 hectares of prime land, Sibaya Central’s contemporary urban setting has been articulated to blend unobtrusively with its natural environment. Given this, Iyer confirmed that it was critical to take the 300 hectares of indigenous forest, over six kilometres of pristine beach and lush wetland topography into consideration when applying the design language to the area. Development Executive Dayalan Chetty says, “We have vital natural assets under our custodianship which will be maintained, protected and preserved along with the beaches, wetlands and other rehabilitated open spaces by the Sibaya Coastal Precinct Conservation Trust. This will also enable the surrounding communities access to these valuable green belts in an appropriately managed and sensitive manner.” Formed last year and under the expert management of ecologist Dr Richard Kinvig and horticulturalist Geoff Nichols, the Trust is mandated to ensure a conservation management plan is compiled and implemented in line with the development’s activities. Chetty says, “Upholding our commitment to preserving

our natural environment is of the utmost importance and will be achieved through the Conservation Trust’s activities.” Given its unique urban setting, connection to nature and modern attributes, Sibaya Coastal Precinct is set to be a benchmark of urban sustainability for projects around the world as it meets all life’s requirements in an environmentally considered manner. Du Toit says, “We are making unprecedented progress with our vision to unlock the growth potential that will come with the development of Sibaya Coastal Precinct. Introducing Sibaya Central is another vitally important piece of the Precinct vision that demonstrates our pledge to create an environmentally sustainable future that provides a caring, integrated and visionary place for all citizens of all ages, at every stage of life.”

There is some irony in governments around the world, including South Africa, trying to prevent the use of sugar through sugar taxes, while at the same time lifting prohibitions on the use of marijuana.

waZulu Natal will be impacted on by this trend. It is common knowledge that the cost of growing marijuana in Southern Africa is a fraction of what it is elsewhere. There will be a potentially significant financial upside if large scale commercial growth becomes lawful.

Legalisation involves a bigger concession by governments that controlling what people voluntarily ingest is their own personal responsibility and/or state intervention has a net cost greater than any net benefit.

In South Africa, the use or possession of Marijuana is prohibited by the legislation in the table below:

In some places, marijuana may be used for medical purposes and in others it may be used for medical or recreational purposes.

Some places have decriminalised the recreational use of marijuana while others have legalised it. Decriminalising means the use of marijuana is not a criminal offence but can still result in a fine. Compare decriminalising to speed limits. Going slightly above the speed limit is not a crime but it can result in a fine. Legalisation means no criminal offence and no penalties, unless defined parameters for use are not respected. Continuing with the car analogy, it is legal to drive as fast as you want on the autobahn but there are rules.

RELEVANT LEGISLATION IN SOUTH AFRICA Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act

Section 4 (b) prohibits the use of undesirable dependence producing substances and cannabis is listed.

Medicines and Related Section 22A (10) prohibits the sale of Substances Control Act scheduled substances other than for permissible medical purposes. Cannabis is listed in schedule 7. Criminal Procedure Act

Section 40 (1) (h) Authorises the arrest of a person in possession of dependence producing drugs.

GREEN?

Green Prince and Trial of the Plant

In the 2017, in the case of Prince v Minister of Justice, the authority of the state to restrict what people eat, drink or smoke in their own homes was challenged on the grounds that it is an unjustifiable invasion of an individual’s right to privacy, dignity and freedom. The Western Cape High Court held that the use of criminal law to punish private use of marijuana was not justified. The court ruled that the relevant sections in the legislation referred to above were unconstitutional to the extent that they prohibit the possession, purchase or cultivation of cannabis in a person’s home for personal consumption by an adult. The Prince decision has been appealed and should be heard by the Constitutional Court some time in 2018. Up until the Constitutional

Court has ruled on the matter the possession of marijuana, in the writer’s view, remains a criminal offence.

Another equally important case has come to be known as the Trial of the Plant (google the term). This case involves a challenge to the constitutionality of criminalising marijuana.

The Future Given the international trend towards both lawful medical and lawful recreational uses of marijuana, it is arguable that widespread commercial farming of the crop in KwaZulu Natal is a possibility at some point.

HOLISTIC PLANNING

Three ways holistic financial planning can enhance your share portfolio.

Y

ou may have started out with a small amount of money which seems unimportant to include in your plan, or perhaps it is one area of your financial plan you want to retain control over. Perhaps you are motivated by those weekend conversations around the braai, and simply want to be able to take part. Whatever the reason, investors may not apply the same level of rigour to a share portfolio as they do to the rest of their financial portfolio. Taking a holistic financial planning view, however, can help you maximise your share portfolio in the long run, as it helps to cultivate a more considered and disciplined approach. Just like any other part of your portfolio, your share portfolio needs a clear objective and strategy. It is key to stick to your investment objectives and not to second-guess yourself or your investment adviser. Below are three resolutions to follow when it comes to managing your share portfolio – and reaping the benefits in the long-term. 1. Holistic planning encourages you to view your shares objectively Equities have proven to be the best asset class to be exposed to over time. Share portfolios therefore have enormous potential to enhance the returns of your overall financial portfolio, provided you take certain factors into account. One consideration is that since the returns on shares are not guaranteed, selecting the correct shares is of primary importance. Another is to ensure you avoid the common mistake of getting emotionally attached to some of the shares in your investment portfolio. A financial planner can act as a sounding board and help you take a more objective view of your holdings. 2. It reminds you of the importance of the correct time horizon We often find that with shorter-term investments, investors tend to take on riskier shares as the yield potential is more attractive. This approach may lead to disappointment, since the probability of loss is typically higher in the shortterm. Make sure that when you invest in a share portfolio, you define your investment horizon correctly, and that the risk/return trade-off you identify is based on facts rather than on hopes and expectations. 3. Complementing a share portfolio with other products can lower risk The danger of viewing your share portfolio in isolation is that you may become overwhelmed by volatility or periods of poor performance. While share portfolios can be higher risk, they also tend to have higher returns over a longer-term investment horizon. For this reason, in a holistic plan they should be complemented with lower-risk vehicles. Choose products that suit your risk appetite and your investment horizon, as not all investments may be equally suited to your purpose – especially, for example, when you are saving for retirement. When you view your shareholdings as part of your entire investment portfolio, you are less likely to be discouraged by short-term volatility and respond emotionally. Holistic financial planning is not about putting you in a box and limiting your choices. Rather, it is about ensuring that every part of your portfolio contributes to the success of your overall financial plan – including your share portfolio.
