RECOGNISION
Nokuthula Mcinga won the Standard Bank Top Woman in Aviation Award in August 2017. She was recognised for the work that she has been doing with the communities, as well as overseeing the environmental management at King Shaka International Airport. ‘It was a great honour and humbling experience to be recognized through such a prestigious award. This is a further motivation for hard work and continued involvement in maintaining and improving our environment’ Pictured: Sahil Sewpersad, Bryan Pietersen and Marc Rosenberg.
Today, more than ever, family and friends are dispersed across the globe with technology being the primary facet keeping them connected. With this in mind, a group of KZN-born friends, have worked together to conceptualise a mobile phone application (App) that allows people to easily treat their loved ones on those special occasions, at the simple click of a button.
we really do know first-hand how difficult it can be to spoil your loved ones, especially at the last minute. We created MiTreat so that you can still treat friends to that Friday afternoon drink, or your mom and dad to that anniversary meal at their favourite restaurant; by simply logging on to an App,” explains Bryan Pietersen.
The brainchild of Bryan Pietersen, a cocktail bar owner in London and a global Food & Beverage consultant, together with celebrated England cricketer Kevin Pietersen, and local businessmen Sahil Sewpersad and Marc Rosenberg, MiTreat will be officially launched to the Durban market on 27th November, just in time for the festive season.
He continues, “The App is 100% responsive, so as soon as a treat is purchased, it is sent to the recipient who can then immediately redeem it from the restaurant or bar that he has been sent a voucher for.”
Available through the Google Play Store or the Apple Store, MiTreat is a platform in which you can treat friends or family to a drink or a meal in 5 easy steps; select the recipient, the location, their favourite restaurant or bar, select a product and finally make payment. It also gives you the opportunity to personalise your message to the recipient, as well as ensure their safe journey home with Uber. “With my brother and I both having lived in the UK for a number of years,
Having taken a year to conceptualise, develop and test, MiTreat is a first for South Africa, with plans to launch nationally in the New Year. Durban restaurants have welcomed the concept, with the likes of The Oyster Box, Little Havana, Pinxada, Spiga, The George, and Ray’s Kitchen, amongst others, already on board. What better way for a venue to get more bums on seats. Pietersen confirms, “The use of the App costs nothing extra for the user or the recipient. It really is user-friendly, and appeals to people of all ages. We are delighted that our idea has finally become a reality for people to enjoy.”

ELEPHANTS once roamed

Florida Road, Durban was once a sandy track, that was used daily by elephants on their trek to obtain water from the marches at Greyville, which now make up part of the Durban Royale Golf Course, and then back to their feeding grounds in the Umgeni area. Florida Road became the address of some of the first families to call Durban home. It is arguably Durban’s main artery, connecting the CBD to the Northern Suburbs.
10
T
he first municipal tram line in South Africa was laid in Florida Road and was used for the first time on the 12th of September 1892, with horses providing the motive power. The Durban tramway network formed part of the Durban transport system for nearly 70 years, until the end of the 1940’s. The oldest tram shelter has recently been restored in Florida Road by the municipality and the UIP (Urban Improvement Precinct). In late 2013, Florida Road Urban Improvement Precinct was created. This area began to degenerate with urban decay setting in and engulfing the city with crime and grime. It allegedly became the road of underhanded dealings and a wild night life. Like the city centre, Florida Road is reinventing itself, the old-world charm is streaming back, and a new vibrant community is emerging. With a keen sense of the past prevailing, there is an eclectic mix of both modern and historic elements that are creating a funky ambience that is appealing to all ages. Urban Lime, which is an innovative, property regeneration company, is taking the lead in this transformation. Florida Road being one of the company’s designated regeneration precincts for Durban. The company is working on two nodes being Florida Exchange and Florida Fields. Florida Exchange has recently seen the launch of the first Starbucks for Durban, and an exciting array of new restaurants and office spaces. Florida Fields which includes the recently launched Haçienda, has an exciting mix of small retail space and fully serviced offices around a central courtyard, which will provide the link to the rest of Florida Exchange. There are exciting possibilities ahead with Durban reinventing itself after the exodus from the city of many big corporations. There are a number of innovative companies that are taking advantage of this and getting support from the local authorities with a number of interesting and noticeable cleanup initiatives and regeneration developments taking place in the city and surrounding areas.
We use our vision and experience to be the catalyst for radically transforming the way people perceive, use and appreciate their South African City, by creating, managing and continually recreating amazing, inspirational places.” Urban Lime's Vision Statement

We must get beyond passions, like a great work of art. In such miraculous harmony. We should learn to love each other so much to live outside of time... detached.” Federico Fellini La Dolce Vita: Federico Fellini's Masterpiece
I
n a casual conversation with friends, I asked the following question: ’How did 2017 treat you?” Different experiences and perspectives on the year gave different answers. Some answered: “Blessed”, others: “Hectic to say the least!” Most answers were focussed on achievements, failures, lessons learned and mostly not having enough time to get everything done. During a recent trip to Italy’s Amalfi coast with my family, the Italian way of living, often called, “la dolce vita” (the sweet life), warmed my heart and soul. Based on a culture that revolves around food, beauty, love and a passion for life’s simplest pleasures, the Italians truly know how to live life to its fullest. The Italian lifestyle of la dolce vita is about slowing down and focussing on the present moment. I thought to myself: Should we not perhaps make an effort to bring more “la dolce vita” into our lives, especially during this last part of the year? Why not allow ourselves to be seduced by the indulgence of slow living? For the next three months of summer, let us take time out of our hectic schedules and busy lives to pursue things that make us feel alive. Here are a few ways to invite a taste of ‘La dolce vita’ into your life:
Unschedule your time
We all need time to unwind from the daily grind to refresh our minds and bodies. In Italy, long breaks after lunch are the norm, but that may not work in the typical South African work day. The best way I’ve found to take a break is to have at least one day a week that’s unscheduled. See what comes up, and be okay with doing nothing. On a recent unscheduled weekend, I got to spend five leisurely hours lunching with friends whom I haven’t seen in months. I also took time out to lie on the couch reading whatever I felt like – something I never have time to do. When the weekend was over, I felt relaxed and ready for work on Monday.
Slow down!
We live in such a fast paced world and rarely afford ourselves the time to actually savour our actions - so focus on slowing down. Focus on the present and be aware of your every activity in the now.
Walk, don’t run
There’s a lovely Italian phrase called, “Fare una passeggiata”. It means “To take a walk”, and after having a meal in Italy, it’s common to do so. Not a speed walk; not a walk to go anywhere in particular. Just a slow stroll that helps you digest, converse with people and enjoy the scenery. In the Amalfi region of Italy, walking is part of everyday life since narrow, winding streets and ancient stone stairs are your only way to get around. Walking is one of the best exercises you can do. During our time in Italy, we ate pasta and gelato every day, yet didn’t gain a kilogram. I attribute that to all the walking we did. 12
The end of the year is fast approaching, and I sense some anxiety as people start to tie loose ends together and get outstanding tasks and commitments done before many businesses close down for the holidays.
LA DOLCE VITA THE SWEET LIFE
Love your body
If you go to any Italian beach, you’ll see lots of people who seem to be quite comfortable with their bodies, no matter how tall or short, skinny or heavy, old or young. You’ll see elderly women wearing bikinis and big bellied men in Speedos. Eat the food. Walk on the beach. Swim in the ocean. Enjoy yourself wherever you are and stop comparing your body to an airbrushed model in an ad. If you fully own and love your body, you’ll be able to strut confidently on any beach.
Eat slow
In Italy, a waiter will never bring you the check unless you ask for it. Why? Because it’s considered rude to rush someone through a meal. It’s not uncommon to sit for two hours over a multicourse lunch starting with an antipasto dish and ending with a chilled Limoncello, a liqueur made from lemon rinds. A longer meal time allows for conversation, people watching and the ultimate savouring and appreciation of each and every ingredient you eat. For the next three months of summer make family meals a time for eating and conversing, not texting or watching TV.
Treat people like family
In Italy people are extremely family orientated. They treat neighbours and strangers who enter their space like family. We rented a villa in the small town of Praiano, and our host Lucca treated us like family. His aunt, who lives in a smaller house on the same property, offered us fresh tomatoes and basil out of her garden for our lunch on the terrace of our villa. Lucca indulged us with mozzarella and wine while taking time to inform us of the best beaches for swimming. They might have had something more important to do at the
time, but we’ll never know because they were totally focused on the present – truly engaging with five complete strangers from South Africa.
Seek out beauty
Italians surround themselves with beauty. The art of Michelangelo and Raphael, opera of Verdi and soft sounds of Vivaldi is part of the Italian lifestyle. Surround yourself by pretty and inspiring things this summer. Declutter your living space. Find the most beautiful table cloth for your table, and utilise the crystal glasses to drink the best wine you can find. Fill your garden with flowers. Every now and then dress extra nice, indulge in your favourite things, do things mindfully, purposefully, with presence. Live in the moment and indulge in your own style and unique beauty.
Live with passion
Whether eating, talking, loving, fighting or creating, Italians do it with “passione”. Even everyday conversation is filled with passion by exuberant speech and hand gestures. This open expression of emotions is a healthy way to live and relieve stress. Have fun! Remember to include things in your regular daily life that are just for fun, because you can. It is summer in our beautiful country and I think we could all benefit from adopting a little of ‘la Dolce Vita’ for the next few months – an attitude of making life as sweet and enjoyable as possible, rather than passable.
Life is short, and it is up to you to make it sweet - Sarah Louis

2017 IN REVIEW
As 2017 draws to a close, it is interesting to reflect upon the property market and the factors that have driven demand during the course of the past year. Quarter one of 2017 began with cautiously optimistic sentiment: the Rand had stabilised and there was a sense that the South African property market had weathered many of the storms that had wreaked havoc with the political and economic climates.
I CAROL REYNOLDS Area Principal | Pam Golding Properties Carol is a former Miss Universe SA, and a qualified advocate with fifteen years' property experience. She runs the Pam Golding Durban Coastal franchise which spans from Durban through to Umdloti. Some of her accolades include: franchisee of the year and top marketing office. Apart from her Law degree, she has Honours degrees in Management and Psychology, and has recently completed her Masters Degree in Psychology. She is one of the most highly qualified Principals in the Real Estate industry. 16
n April, however, with the downgrade to junk status, shock waves permeated all markets, and property was no exception. The three areas of the property market that were most significantly impacted were the leisure market; the investor market, which has had a knock-on effect on developments; and the luxury market. The rationale is perfectly logical: these three markets are driven by top-end clientele, with the financial means to explore a multitude of options when it comes to investing their money: should they invest locally or off-shore? Should they invest in property? Should they emigrate? Should they wait and see how the political cards fall in December? Most of our clients have adopted the latter view of waiting for the outcome of the political race in December. As a result, the banks have found themselves in a cash-flush position, with their upper echelon clientele, simply leaving their money to earn interest, while they wait to see what unfolds on the political front. Thus, we have noticed the top end of the market slow down somewhat in 2017; investor confidence wane to some extent and the leisure market has also been less active than it was in 2016.
However, if we analyse the other sectors of the residential property market, there have been some interesting trends. For example, we have noticed that the market in the price band below R5 million has still been very active. This is the sector of the market which is invested in living in South Africa, and hence, for these homeowners, it has been business as usual, with normal life events driving activity: namely, up-sizing; down-scaling; relocations; family changes; school demands; etc. John Loos of FNB, has shared some interesting statistics regarding the conventional residential market that speak to general and emerging trends moving forward. The first noticeable trend is that sectional title property is outperforming the full title market in terms of year-on-year growth. Loos notes that the sectional title index rose by 5.27% year-on-year, whereas, the full title market only escalated by 2.95%. Loos predicts that in years to come, the sectional title market may become the larger of the two residential segments. In addition, within the sectional title market, the highest growth recorded was in smaller units: namely, those with fewer than two bedrooms. One bedroomed and studio units enjoyed 9.3% growth

in quarter 3 of 2017. In the full title segment, by comparison, three bedroomed homes enjoyed the most growth achieving price inflation of 3,7% year-on-year, in contrast to the 2,1% growth of homes with two or four bedrooms. Thus, buyer demand is strongest in the three-bedroomed home category and the one-bedroomed starter apartment category, but there is a general shift towards smaller, sectional title living across the board. Buyers are seeking security, low maintenance, lifestyle and cost saving above all else. With rising utility costs, smaller homes are less expensive to run, and sectional title living means that communal areas are maintained by the body corporate making for a hassle-free lifestyle.
the volume of bond applications has declined in 2017, given that the number of property transactions has also declined. Ooba estimates a drop of approximately fourteen percent in bond applications year-on-year. Thus, banks are competing for a bigger piece of a smaller pie.
Another trend that has emerged this year is the resurgence of 100% bonds. The banks have had a healthier lending appetite than they had in 2016, and they have been more competitive, with clients enjoying better interest rates as a result. The National Credit Act has controlled the risk environment for the banks for some time now, and hence, it is not surprising that the banks are now ready to adopt a more aggressive approach to lending. Coupled with this is the fact that
In sum, 2017 has been an interesting year with the political arena creating uncertainty and reticence amongst the upper end. Despite this, there have been some positives: a healthier lending climate; excellent growth in the “small unit” segment of the sectional title market and better interest rates being offered to bond applicants on their home loans. Now, in keeping with general market sentiment, the time has come to wait and see what 2018 brings …

According to Ooba, the bond decline rate in 2016 was 45% and the approval rate was 55%. This year, approvals are up to 58% and declines have dropped to 42%. In addition, with bonds where the loan to value ratio is 80% or less, clients are being offered sub-prime rates of -1% or - 0,8% from some of the banks. This is encouraging given that the market needs momentum from the banks to maintain its activity levels. Ref# 1ND1324217

Bayede! is South Africa’s only wine brand that carries the crest of the Zulu Royal Household and includes the signature of King Goodwill Zwelithini on all of its wine products, making it a truly royal and exclusive wine brand from its physical appearance right down to its roots. As much as the physical appearance of the bottles is eye-catching, one shouldn’t underestimate the superb quality of these wines. Bayede!, produces wine that is of an outstanding standard and this has been consistently evidenced through the winning of numerous awards and acknowledgments in recent years.

T
he founder and CEO of The Bridge of Hope Wines, Rosemary Mosia, with a business background and an array of degrees under her belt, hadn’t unlocked her passion for wine until it was suggested that she centred her masters research project on the wine industry. It was this that catalysed Rosemary’s keen interest for wine. After the completion of her degree, the business savvy entrepreneur threw herself into better understanding of the wine market, process and product and it was in 2012 when she took steps to launch her own brand, Bridge of Hope. Situated in Wellington, the Linton Park Wine Estate has a legacy dating back to 1699. It boasts a rich history as the manor house and cellar which were built in 1809 and 1921 respectively. With three centuries of winemaking traditions, it is not hard to believe that the wine created here by JG Auret and assistant Anrico Solomons, is of a world-class standard. Wine collections offered by Bridge of Hope includes the Classic range consisting of a Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Unwooded Chardonnay, Pinotage and Sweet Rose and the Premium range made up of a Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Café Cabernet.
CAPE DREAMS
Bayede! was first established in 2008 after King Goodwill Zwelithini approached Antoinette Vermooten (CEO of Bayede!) and initiated this idea in the hope that it would trigger and assist in the creation of jobs. Altus Le Roux (Bayede!’s well reknowned wine maker) proceeded to establish the vineyards in the Western Cape, and now eight years later, Bayede wines have shown remarkable growth and success not only locally, but across the globe.
BRIDGE OF HOPE
BAYEDE
T
he word Bayede, is strongly attached to the rich Zulu culture and is a word that evokes proud feelings towards our collective South African History.
T
he birth of the Cape Dreams winery began with the vision of Bunty Kahn. As a South African lady that was determined to make a difference, Bunty partnered with a highly credible winery that was established in 1964 in the Western Cape, Robertson Valley, famously referred to as the valley of wine and roses. The winery makes use of modern technology which allows for the style of the wines to be adapted. A contributing aspect to what makes Cape Dreams unique, is in the soil within the Robertson Valley. With the highest free limestone content in South Africa, the soils serve to create spectacular grapes which contribute toward the taste and quality of the wines produced in this region. The Cape Dreams brand is made up of a wide collection of varietals that vary from Super Premium to entry level wines. The white wines include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Colombar. The red wines include Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinotage, Merlot and the Red blend. In addition, there is a Pinotage Rose that is also available. Cape Dreams doesn’t end there as they include the super premium reserve wines that feature Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Pinotage Reserve and a Shiraz Reserve.

SEVEN SISTERS
T
he tale of the seven sisters tells an encouraging and heartwarming story of a family that, although experiencing hardship, have emerged as a force to be reckoned with. After their father lost his job, the family was evicted and the siblings were forced to split up and live with different relatives. It was 20 years later (2005) that the Brutus sisters were reunited and began working towards realising their vision of creating African Roots Wine Brands, with Vivian Kleynhans at the helm. It was two years after the creation of African Roots Wine Brands (2007) that the Seven Sisters brand was born. This unique brand is named after the seven Brutus sisters that each play a pivotal role in the management of the company and each varietal is cleverly named after each sister.
The seven varietals from youngest to oldest consist of Carol-Cabernet Sauvignon, June-Merlot, Dawn-Pinotage/ Shiraz, Vivian-Sauvignon Blanc, Yolanda – Moscato, Twena – Rose and OdeliaSweet white. The Brutus Family dream was to own a wine farm and to produce quality wines for local and international markets.
In this, the last publication of 2017, meet the final entrepreneurs and their wines to complete The Treasure Chest collection that was introduced to you in 2017

UMHLANGA
BOOM Text Stefan Botha | Firm Rainmaker Marketing | T: 087 231 1588 E: info@rainmakermarketing.co.za | www.rainmakermarketing.co.za
Whilst many keep referring to the Atlantic Seaboard as South Africa’s hottest property zone, the area of Umhlanga is right up there being the most sought-after place to live, work, holiday and invest.
F
or many who don’t know enough about the KwaZulu-Natal market, it would be easy to underestimate the growth of the area, amidst various levels of negativity within the economy. The greater property areas will continue to flourish, in tougher market conditions, but often at the expense of other residential nodes. This can very much be said for Umhlanga where investment has been pulled from Gauteng, but also from other areas of greater Durban such as Morningside, Berea and areas of Upper Highway.
On the back of this, the Umhlanga Ridge Town Centre around Gateway, has also started to come into its own with the likes of Growthpoint and Nedbank taking large stakes in the area. Here, there has been a maturity of retail and commercial and both an investor and end-user residential demand which has never been stronger. Buyers are securing an Umhlanga address, with the amenities offered by Gateway and surrounds, for around R25,000 /m² which offers tangible value for developers, and end-users, from around the country.
The launch of the Pearls of Umhlanga in April 2015 was a catalytic moment for Umhlanga as an area. Up to that point, no development of significance had been launched within the area in some time, and there was no clear benchmark for the level of the area’s demand. The Pearls of Umhlanga obviously offers a unique location, but not only did that launch sell R1,1 billion in one day, it set a totally new pricing precedent for the area, which literally took top-end pricing in the area from around R30,000/m² to R45,000/m² overnight. The fact that the Pearls of Umhlanga has now reached R70,000/m² emphasises the level of demand from the rest of South Africa and further abroad.
We all know that our economy is in a challenging space and we hope for some positive sentiment at the end of the year and that the KwaZulu-Natal property market still stands exceptionally firm and buoyed by tangible demand. One only must look at the significant amount of large investment from abroad, and from other areas of the country, to understand that there is something special happening in this part of town and that one would be hard-pressed to find a better region to invest, anywhere, right now.
From that moment onwards, the Umhlanga market boom literally went into overdrive, with the subsequent release of Oceans Umhlanga and Umhlanga Arch which are both mixed-use developments of over R1 billion in value. The significance is that both have attracted international hotel operators who clearly see the massive attraction of Umhlanga as an area. Umhlanga Village has its obvious appeal, but what was significant about Umhlanga Arch (released through investor networks in December 2016) is that it was the first residential release within Umhlanga Ridgeside which overlooks Umhlanga Village on the Western side of the M4. There was no historic precedent for this node and not only did 180 residential apartments sell-out without going to market, it has attracted boutique retailers from around the country. Ridgeside has also subsequently seen the release of Enigma Private Estate which has upped-the-ante further and sold freehold stands for up to R7,5 million apiece. The demand for the region is fueled heavily by a Gauteng market, where Umhlanga has always been the holiday destination of choice, as well as corporates and people from around Durban who understand the appeal of an Umhlanga address.

EnvisioninG THE ABOVE: ANDR EAS WASSENAAR , TIM JO HNSO N AND MAR K JOHNSON FROM SEEFF DOLPHI N COAST.
Future B Led by the strength of a dynamic trio, Seeff Dolphin Coast have adapted to changing times and have built their reputation as the property experts on the Dolphin Coast.
ehind every business is a story and the Seeff Dolphin Coast story is driven by the diverse combination of management and leadership
experience of their three committed directors Andreas Wassenaar, Mark Johnson and Tim Johnson. Andreas cut his teeth in property on the developments side, being involved in conceptualizing and selling developments in Umhlanga and then moving into the
position of Sales and Marketing Director with the master developers of Zimbali Coastal Resort, Tongaat Hulett Developments and their joint venture partner IFA. On the back of this and after 22 years in the industry, Andreas then took the opportunity to take on the Seeff Licence for the Dolphin Coast when it presented itself in 2009. Having worked with Mark, who had assisted

the developers of Zimbali Coastal Resort with a strategic development programme, Andreas offered Mark the prospect of a partnership position in Seeff Dolphin Coast to initiate the Dolphin Coast agency. The rest as they say is “History”. From small beginnings, Seeff Dolphin Coast developed a reputation for professionalism and astute advice. Fuelled by Mark’s 20 years of consulting for large organizations, including developing Leadership Programmes for blue chip companies such as Unilever, and Andreas’ extensive property development and sales expertise, they made a conscious decision to reinvent how an estate agency is viewed by its clientele.
Our strong company values such as integrity, professionalism and family makes it possible for all our employees to work as one and move forward together.”
W ORDS: CHRI SSI E J OHN SON P HOTOS: C HRI S A LLA N
With a view to the future, in 2011 they then approached Tim, Mark’s son, who had been working in Johannesburg in his own brand consultancy, focusing on destination marketing, to add a fresh and innovative dimension to the fledgling business. This tri-member partnership all have the view that work can be more than just a job when it stands for something you really care about. Truly believing that real estate is a dynamic sector, they set about recruiting into their business a mix of young professionals and experienced realtors who shared the objective of being estate agents as a first career choice. “Our agents bring with them vastly different experiences and backgrounds” says Andreas. “However our strong company values such as integrity, professionalism and family makes it possible for all our employees to work as one and move forward together.“ “Adding to this” says Mark “our employees know pretty much everything that’s going on in the business and why decisions are made. Every week we share buyer and seller feedback, new happenings, lessons from sales, new listings and any property news both locally and nationally. By sharing all of this we encourage discussion, the exchange and re-interpretation of ideas, which leads to unexpected and innovative outcomes. We focus on making our people happy by creating a supportive and inclusive environment, which ultimately makes our clients happy.”
I was born and grew up on the North Coast. It is in my blood. Now combined with my passion for this lifestyle, I have the perfect job marketing it. All three partners agree that the most rewarding part of this business is the satisfaction of seeing their clients’ happy with their agents’ work, advice, support and dedication. Selling and finding homes touches many lives and the sales team at Seeff understands the crucial role they play in achieving this, as is highlighted by the Seeff “Home is our story” brand campaign. A game plan is not very useful until a great team is fielded, and management feels they have achieved just that and continue to provide their team with the best training, tools and technology they can find It is no coincidence that Seeff Dolphin Coast has been recognised by the Seeff National Head Office for their out- the- box thinking. This agency has won the “Licensee of the Year Award” for 5 consecutive years as well as the “Marketer of the Year Award” for 6 consecutive years. Tim’s entrepreneurial approach combined with his passion for advertising and marketing means he is always looking for ways to differentiate the Seeff Dolphin Coast brand and market offering. Tim talks with visible passion and believes that if you pay attention to ever changing media and technology trends, you can create amazingly different approaches. “I was born and grew up on the North Coast. It is in my blood. Now combined with my passion for this lifestyle, I have the perfect job marketing it. Personally, it is a privilege to work with my dad and build this business together. I am also exceptionally proud of the fact that my mum’s family has been working and living in this area for around 140 years. This in itself is an incredible legacy and is something I hope to build on and leave for generations of our family to come.” A legacy is where you are remembered for what you have contributed. This team would like to be remembered for making a difference not just in the estate agency sector but in the Dolphin Coast Community as a whole.

It seems like an understatement, but we’re increasingly living in a world where it’s difficult to tell the difference between fact and fiction. This is disconcerting for several reasons, not least of which because suddenly you really don’t know who to trust anymore.
T
his is epitomised with the discussion around fake news in journalism currently – and the definition of it very much seems to depend on who you’re asking. What used to mean outright propaganda is now just an epithet to describe any coverage you may not like, particularly for those in politics. And it’s not just happening internationally, our own political discourse has been taken over by these allegations – and in much the same way as we’ve seen in other countries.

This shift in truth and fiction has led to the rise of a new concept in communication – the idea of “post truth”. This basically means that we live in a world where the truth of what you say is not as important as the conviction you have in it. The word was named Oxford Dictionaries’ Word of the Year in 2016 because of the massive spike in usage around the US Election. And this is made worse by the confirmation bias of social media bubbles. Most people now get their news from articles shared on social media rather than through independent news outlets. This is not only problematic because of the spread of dubious news sources, but also because people tend to only then get news that matches their own belief system. If you only get news from your friends, and your friends have the same views as you, then it’s not surprising that you get a very skewed version of the world. This whole debate about objective truth in the public discourse is seeing brands stepping in to become the arbiters of meaning. Google for example, has philosophers on staff to consider the moral and ethical issues around what the brand does. Snapchat is another great example of this. The image-sharing app launched their own online magazine about living with technology – Real Life – independently staffed by journalists and humanities graduates. Ultimately, it’s not just about putting a product into the world for brands, but also helping people to understand the meaning behind it.
Snapchat’s investigations into the boundary between real life and tech is particularly interesting, because we’re in a space now where the artificial and human are blurring too. Advances in technology mean that two relatively old technologies are now finally coming into their own – Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality. AI, for example, is starting to move into more and more creative spaces. IBM’s Watson project, for example, was taught to conceptualise new recipes, while the advertising agency McCann Japan used an AI creative director to come up with a campaign for Clorets. AI is also being taught to write fiction and music, and while it’s early days for the field, the tipping point towards truly creative technology is not far away. As this kind of artificially intelligent technology increasingly becomes a part of our lives, we are confronted with all kinds of thorny questions around what kind of rights virtual life has. Humans, animals and even nature have pre-defined rights that dictate how we engage with them, but we have yet to codify them for technology. For the most part that is. Saudi Arabia recently took this dialogue into a new space by granting citizenship to a robot named Sophia (who incidentally once said she’d “destroy humans” in a Q&A). This is an outlier in the world at the moment, however, and what happens as this discussion progresses will be interesting to watch. So, it’s clear that the shift in objective reality in our world is clearly changing the way we engage with companies, communication and each other. Hearteningly, we’re starting to see wider discussions around truth as people become more conscious consumers of information. Younger consumers particularly see truth as a spectrum not a binary. It may horrify people who grew up in a world where a truth and lie were poles apart, but in the world we’re in now, it’s maybe not so strange after all.

TOUCH, PAUSE
FOREST There’s no denying that KwaZulu-Natal is blessed with amazing natural assets. Tourism bodies consistently promote our Berg, Beach and Bush in numerous marketing endeavours to attract tourists and investors to our shores. And for good reason. But not much has been said about the province’s beautiful and unique forests, until now.
O
wing to ideal climatic conditions and well-drained soils, the forests of KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast boast a diversity of plant and tree species which in turn attract abundant wildlife. Bird and animal life spotted in these lush ecosystems include the rare green coucal, wattle eye flycatcher, blue and red duiker, snakes such as pythons and black mambas, bush pigs, porcupines, leguaans, genet cats and many more. Dr Richard Kinvig is a man who can most certainly see the wood for the trees. As a wellrespected Ecologist who specialises in Botany, Ecology, Environmental Science, Zoology and Entomology, he has been involved in over 200 projects within the environmental field. Offering expert insight and considerable experience in terms of environmental management, he also recognises the benefits of spending time in the great outdoors. When he isn’t trekking through our coastal forests, swinging a panga at the peril of alien plants, he can be found engaging with multiple stakeholders on ways to unlock appropriate access to some of the province’s most significant and sensitive natural assets that lie along the coast north of Durban. These include areas such as Sibaya Coastal Precinct, Cornubia, uMhlanga and La Lucia Ridge and Ridgeside, to name a few. “What people don’t realise is that there are several large pockets of forest close to each other which each offer something different and unique to see and experience. This potential for accessibility to a variety of different plant and animal species means visitors to the forests won’t always see the same thing, and can return over-and-again to different sections of the inter-connected coastal bands for a totally engaging and new adventure,” says Kinvig. The protected Hawaan Forest, part of which falls within Sibaya Coastal Precinct, harbours lesser-known tree species such as the threatened Cavacoa aurea or Natal Hickory and Cola natalensis or Coshwood. “In the Hawaan Forest, these trees always occur together and appear to have formed a symbiotic relationship not seen in any other forested areas,” he says. The Buffalo Thorn which is normally quite stunted in other places, grows to enormous proportions in Hawaan. A common, but iconic tree is the protected Coastal Red Milkwood or botanical name,
40
Mimusops caffra. These typically occur from the high tide mark on coastal dunes into the forest. The eMdloti Urban Improvement Project (UIP) will be planting Milkwoods along the seaside resort’s frontal dunes as part of their greening programme and even the late Bridget Oppenheimer tipped her hat at the tree with her La Lucia home, Milkwood House. “Though these trees are quite common, it’s their resilience and ability to adapt that draws people to them. The grandeur of the Milkwood has made this an iconic species along the North Coast, alongside our giant Fig trees,” says Richard. “Milkwoods can withstand disturbance, establish themselves quickly and can be found in areas where no other trees have survived,” he says. The forested area near the iconic Cornubia development on the N2’s western side, harbours the Sibaya Fig or Ficus polita. “This a very pretty tree with a unique “drip tip” leaf. It’s unusual to see these trees and it was quite special to see it in Cornubia,” Kinvig enthuses. As land stewards for a part of KwaZulu-Natal’s coastline, Tongaat Hulett takes greening seriously and is committed to developing these areas in a sustainable manner to bring residents and visitors closer to these prized natural wonders. One example is the magnificent fever tree forest on uMhlanga Rocks Drive on La Lucia Ridge. With the rise of large developments such as Sibaya Coastal Precinct and Cornubia, Tongaat Hulett is taking greening to the next level so that the people who live and work in these precincts will enjoy the full benefit of nature’s miracles. The 1 000 hectare Sibaya Coastal Precinct encompasses 308 hectares of forest, 6.5 kilometres of beach and two estuaries. These areas will be linked through an open space system featuring 75 kilometres of trails, green corridors and raised boardwalks. Non-motorised linkages will be encouraged through pedestrianised boulevards that traverse the development. The result is an unprecedented dynamic and inclusive urban space to live, work, play and enjoy the unique natural surroundings on a whole new level. Richard is part of the recently established Sibaya Coastal Precinct Conservation Trust mandated to manage the rehabilitation, maintenance, preservation and appropriate utilisation of the Precinct’s natural assets in an ecologically sustainable manner. “We are exploring ways in which residents and the public can access these areas sustainably to grow interest and appreciation for them,” he says. Besides the trails and other activities, the development team is also exploring the possibility of a zip line and linking the uMhlanga promenade all the way to the eMdloti lagoon, in time. Richard also intends to plant lesser known endemic species in specific previously disturbed areas to create natural showpieces for people to learn about and enjoy. With this in sight, Sibaya Coastal Precinct seeks to bring people closer to nature to enjoy the many benefits to be gained. Kinvig says, “Visiting these special places provides an easy therapy. Just a minute’s pause inside a beautiful indigenous forest is enough to get me through a hard day’s work and this is the experience we want the visitors and residents of Sibaya and greater Durban to enjoy.” Text Louise Hunt on behalf of Tongaat Hulett For more information on Sibaya Coastal Precinct visit www.discoversibaya.co.za

Cocooned within 1000 hectares of beautiful terrain, lies the Mahathunzi wildlife estate, a development that encompasses stateof-the-art, eco-friendly designs with the ambiance of living in a wildlife sanctuary.

n very close proximity to Hilton Village, Pietermaritzburg, and Albert Falls Dam, this luxurious wildlife estate allows owners the freedom to design their very own luxurious and secluded home with all the environmentally savvy mod-cons, creating a wonderful atmosphere for low-key and exclusive living. Each of the 49 freehold properties (20 to 33 hectares) and homes on the estate will vary in size based on the owner’s personal designs. Mahathunzi will appeal to those who desire to connect with the African landscape, yet still want to be able to access the delights of the city on demand. The estate
42
will grant owners easy access to superb shopping facilities and private hospitals. For the water lovers, skippers and fishermen and women, Albert Falls Dam sits 2 kilometres away on the Umgeni River. The overall concept and architectural style of Mahathunzi has been specifically designed so that each home disappears into the landscape - with flat living roofs and wrap around verandas to prevent light reflection, for example. Each freehold property is essentially invisible to their neighbour, and therefore there are no minimum restrictions pertaining to the size of each home. Low lying homes will have access

to exquisite views of the bush and animals, whereas homes situated on the picturesque hillside will be able to look out to Albert Falls Dam and surrounds. There will be no internal fences, and residents can traverse the entire reserve at their will. Mahathunzi is a safe and secure environment for children to run around freely or enjoy an adventurous ride along the communal roads. Activities include; hiking/walking, cycling, game viewing, fishing, bird-watching, water skiing and sailing at Albert Falls Dam, as well as bass fishing to name a few. An equestrian centre is situated next door, allowing residents to stable there and ride out onto the estate. Mahathunzi also supports well established populations of Wildebeest, Giraffe, Reedbuck, Eland, Kudu, Nyala, Blesbok, Zebra, Warthog,
Jackal, abundant bird life and many other indigenous species - all living in an almost endless continuity of space not far from urbanization. Mahathunzi is currently in the process of having the estate, along with Karkloof Safari Spa, proclaimed as a Nature Reserve. Two of the wonderful benefits of being declared a Nature Reserve is that the area outside the residential footprint is considered a conservation area, which is exempt from municipal rates and, that there will be no further development beyond what is envisaged now. It is also envisaged that the property will ultimately form part of a UNESCO biosphere, the Greater Umgeni Biosphere, a project which is driven by Wessa (Wildlife and Environmental Society of SA) and the Department of Environmental Affairs. 43
The salient features of Mahathunzi are: • Excellent security • Malaria-free • Easy access from Hilton and Pietermaritzburg • Close proximity to Pietermaritzburg and Durban airports • 5 private hospitals within close proximity • 50 kilometres of internal roads • Close proximity to numerous good schools • High speed internet • Very low density Each plot (excluding building) on Mahathunzi is currently being sold at a price of R4 million plus VAT. Each property will vary in size (between 20 and 33 hectares).

Activities at Mahathunzi: • Mountain Biking; • Horse Riding; • Fishing; • Walking/Running; • Hiking; • Bird Watching; and • Game Viewing.

PRESERVING

It is often said that ‘Simbithi Eco Estate is a way of preserving nature, as much as it is a way of preserving a lifestyle, that in the rush of today’s world, you might not have imagined’. Situated on the KwaZulu Natal North Coast, Simbithi Eco Estate is nestled amidst nature and is surrounded by lush natural sub tropical vegetation. 46
I
t is out of this desire to embrace a lifestyle in harmony with the natural surrounding that the design ideas for ERF 94 or (13 Cussonia Way) began to unfold.
Cheryl & Mark Turner started the design process by first finding an architect that had a heart to listen to their needs and ideas and interpret them into a design. After inspecting dozens of potential sites with Greg Townsend, the chosen architect, ERF 94 was finally settled on as the perfect space for the design to come
alive. The design process was a journey of discovery, with a wonderful dialogue of thinking between client and architect. We all worked towards the ultimate aim of creating a home that connects with nature, delicately harmonises with its surrounding, and is a celebration of the beautiful space. The tropical modernist style of the home has cavity sliding doors opening onto the deck and pool and feature timber pivot doors, which allows the entire house to open up to embrace the natural environment, with a seamless flow from house, to terrace, to rim flow pool and the natural bush beyond. 47
It’s a unique experience…tasteful, tranquil and connected to nature…an almost forgotten place in the rush of today’s world. The house is fully automated and boasts Sonos audio connected to simfy, allowing complete flexibility in song choice from any zone within the house.

The Midlands is the beauty-spot on the face of KZN, adding that something special and unique to the Province’s mix of seaside, bush and urban attractions. Snuggled between Pietermaritzburg and the Drakensberg it is a famous stretch of arts, crafts, scrumptious foodie spots and some of the country’s loveliest land – also known as “The Midlands Meander”, referring to the 80km stretch of road from Pietermaritzburg, past Midmar Dam and Lions River, through Lidgetton, past Balgowan, Nottingham Road and Mooi River where you’ll find potters, weavers, woodcrafters, fine artists, leather workers, metal workers, herb growers, cheese makers, beer brewers, country hotels and B&B’s. This area offers a rest from the frenzy of modern-day life, where one can book into any one of the charming establishments. One can take long walks in a serene setting, go fishing or shopping at many of the exceptional arts, crafts and décor stores, play a round of golf at Gowrie Farm Course, sip gluvine or enjoy a Pickled Pig (the local ale) at one of the many cosy pubs. The “Midlands Meander” is also famous for its numerous top-drawer restaurants such as the Cooking Bear, Granny Mouse’s Country House or Lythwood Lodge for an evening of fabulous wining and dining. Piggly Wiggly Coffee Shop is the perfect lunch-time spot, especially if you are just passing through. Grab an award-winning cappuccino, nosh on a fresh farmranch salad and enjoy the relaxed, pretty setting. There’s a lovely farm stall on the premises and other great artsy-type stores too. The Midlands was predominantly a farming community in the early days. While farming is still the life-blood, the area has become very popular as a retirement destination and a getaway place. The Midlands offers a very attractive lifestyle, situated conveniently to both the coast and the mountains. The area is also famous for its quality schools which include Hilton College, Michaelhouse, St Johns School for Girls, St Anne’s Girls School, Epworth, Merchiston, Cordwalles and Cowan House, to list a few. On the cultural side, the Royal Agricultural Show, the annual Art in the Park exhibition and the Hilton College Arts Festival in September are just a few examples of what’s on offer.

Klaus Schwab, Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum states: “Not so long ago, parents knew that giving their son or daughter a good education was quite simply the best way to set them on the path to a successful career. Today, things are no longer as certain. The workplace is evolving at such a rapid pace that many skills currently in high demand weren’t even in existence five years ago." He has further defined the current era as a Fourth Industrial Revolution where expansions such as artificial intelligence, 3D printing, robotics and new technologies are creating a job market which requires an unprecedented set of skills.
A
s a campus, we realise our responsibility as an educational institution to not only develop these skills, but give our students a variety of learning opportunities to explore and apply these skills effectively. The STEAM principles of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths incorporate the development of creativity, problem solving, design and critical thinking and are a focus from the Pre-Primary to the College. In Pre-Primary we begin to develop with the building blocks of knowledge, skills and attitudes that students will demonstrate in the higher phases, as well as the specific skills of inquiry, understanding, experimentation and design. We tap into the curiosity of our children and the frequently asked question of, WHY, by creating an inquiry based learning environment where the young child is encouraged to explore and become a critical questioner, researcher and creative problem-solver. In doing this, children search for meaning which leads to a deeper level of understanding as they start to make connections in their world of why and how they could use their knowledge and the endless possibilities available. Much of the daily programme consists of planning, creating and making things often incorporating Lego, blocks, sand, water, elastic bands, paper, straws or other materials to demonstrate their Design Thinking. These activities are either self-selected choice activities or are directives to solve a given problem such as: Design a bridge for the Three Billy Goats to cross that will link the fields and be strong enough for the toy goat to balance on. The children will often create, build, break-
down, rebuild or recreate before settling on the best workable solution and it is during this experimentation they discover the principles of STEAM. These activities usually incorporate collaborative teams where the children research, discuss and communicate their ideas together while finding out which type of bridge works best. It is critical to test the idea and if it is not successful the project is evaluated and adjusted by the children to achieve success. Creativity allows for adaptability and the opportunity to develop their analytical skills, logical reasoning and lateral thinking. IPads are often used as a tool to research, record, evaluate and share their experiments and ideas. These projects are key in making the children’s learning and thinking visible. At Preparatory level (Grade 1 - 7) we have teamed up with GO Lab and created a dynamic and specialised GO Lab Innovation Centre. The core ethos of GO Lab is to re-ignite creative potential and switch on bright minds. By tapping into the powerful educative potential of a young, enquiring mind – the GO Lab solution can continue to encourage creativity and innovation to ensure that learners develop a modernised and relevant skillset. Our GO Lab Innovation Centre allows our students to be exposed to the latest available technology trends. This continues to support our pupils in developing their ability to explore, build and unlock their creative potential. Some of the exciting technologies that our pupils are exposed to include: 3D Printing, Laser Cutting, Electronics and Electronic Programming,
Arduinos and the Raspberry Pi, Teachable Robots and the building of Robotic Cars. Through these experiences, our pupils continue to develop essential 21st Century Skills and are exposed to an environment which is structured, but relaxed and fun, which also allows for limitless possibilities. Relevant, real-life learning takes place, a growth mindset is developed, and our pupils discover their passions. While the merits of technology are so clearly evident in the world around us, integrating them into the classroom in a meaningful fashion so as to improve teaching and learning, can be an elusive objective. Our priority on our campus is always to uphold the excellent education that we deliver. Over the past three years, a group of technology champions at the College have driven technology into the classrooms in meaningful ways. The students and teachers have adopted the new work flows that the technology allows. For our teaching and learning environment to reach the next level, our students now need devices that will allow them to participate in a meaningful way. An exciting new chapter thus begins as we invite the Grade 8’s of 2018 to bring along an Acer R11 Chromebook to school. The global job market is now spread over a vastly different landscape to what it was when traditional education systems were developed. Crawford La Lucia, in collaboration with GO Lab, acknowledges these advancements as we endeavor to encourage and facilitate meaningful education to address global needs of the present and the future. 53
SUGAR & SPICE
And all things nice... that’s what lovely ladies and lords favour. And that’s just what you get when entering a Spa or Wellness Centre, the moment to get pampered like a lady or lord. Many years ago, this privilege was only reserved for the elite in society, but luckily, not anymore. Many of us have gone for a spa day or weekend, savouring a moment away from the pressures of modern day living where you can forget about deadlines, cost vs. profit, managing the team or playdates, teenage social media fighting or diaper duty.
T
here are many Spas out there, with equally as many treatments on offer, treating both physical well-being, as well as mental stress where both the body and face get attention and treatment. Let’s take a moment here to lift the veil on body treatments; explore what goes into a treatment that finds the therapist covering every inch of our bodies with delicious body products, filled with ingredients to occupy the senses… scrub, rub and hydrate your tired, weary bodies and over stretched minds. Beauty and body products are enhanced with many ingredients, some loaded with coffee to stimulate blood flow to the skins surface, salt to scrub, sugar to soften, essential oils with their myriad of possibilities, exotic spices help transport us to the orient, and natural vegetable oils soften and smooth. Usually upon receiving a body treatment, the first application are sugar scrubs, an especially popular choice at Spas. Sugar scrubs can remove the outermost layer of dead skin cells, without causing pain as the texture of sugar is more refined than the salt scrub versions and an especially good choice if your skin is extremely sensitive. A salt scrub is an alternative, and is used when more exfoliation is required by the therapist or if your skin is on the oiler side, as it can draw out impurities and dry out the skin. However, be warned that many people have found salt scrubs scratchy or uncomfortable. Usually, while lying in only a disposable bikini bottom, marginally considered to be covering you, the therapist will start to slowly rub a mixture of sugar and spice and all things nice (nourishing vegetable butters, essential oils, and aromatics) onto your skin, usually starting with your back. Your body is more exposed during a scrub than during a massage or other points during a body treatment, but not to worry. Like most body professionals, therapists have considerable experience in the magical ability to not see anything. When the therapist is finished, he or she will leave the room, giving you a moment to step into a shower to rinse off all the sugar. Next a concentrated treatment product in the form of an ampoule, either liquid or oil, is applied in a press, press, glide massage movement. This delicate press application helps the fragile lymphatic vessels to work more effectively. The lymphatic system helps our body to rid itself
of impurities and infection, with people often reporting an increased healthy feeling once leaving the spa. These products are readily absorbed by the, now prepared, scrubbed beforehand, skin. Do not be fooled into thinking too little product is being applied in the therapists bid to preserve her bottom line. Quite the contrary, ampoules are concentrated and packed with additives doing quite a mountain of work. Wrapping your body in a seaweed or mud wrap, may find you squealing as the cold, squidgy treat gets moulded on, continuing the detoxification of the body by stimulating circulation through vasodilation of blood capillaries. Seaweed may not be your ultimate choice as it does have a lingering sea-like smell. Equally it may not be a top choice for you if you have an iodine or seafood allergy. Mud - is it really MUD? Yes, clay to be exact. The clay may be added to the bath, or prepared as a mask application for your various body parts or poultices for application to specific parts of the body. Clay can also be found in many skin care over-the-counter remedies, such as in treatments for pruritus or acne treatments, where its application helps to reduce acne and oil. Clays contain iron and large amounts of trace minerals, some as many as 75. Green Clay is just one example, and contains many valuable elements including Montmorillonite, mineral oxides, magnesium, calcium, potassium, dolomite, silica, manganese, phosphorous, silicon, copper, and selenium. All wrapped up, soft music ebbs and flows, your mind fills with nothingness, a monthly pilgrimage slips from your lips and you drift off to sleep, treating your therapist to drool and snores. Quiet satisfaction for a job well done.

THE END
South African artist, Peter Matthews, has put together a series of hyper-realistic charcoal drawings on canvas called THE END. Depicted, are the 10 most critically endangered species on our planet and an indication of their numbers remaining in the wild. And the 11th is the cause.
Global biodiversity is declining at an alarming rate, putting the survival of other species and our own future at risk. The latest WWF’s Living Planet Report brings home the enormity of the situation. The Living Planet Index reveals that global populations of fish, birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles declined by 58% between 1970 and 2012. Over the last half a billion years, there have been five mass extinctions, when the diversity of life on earth suddenly and dramatically contracted. Scientists around the world are currently monitoring the sixth extinction, predicted to be the most devastating extinction event since the asteroid impact that wiped out the dinosaurs. This time, the asteroid is us.
We are all spirit beings inhabiting a physical form, so I try to uncover my subject's spirit and reveal more than just the surface texture of the temporary body. Light and dark are the way we determine and perceive form, but they are also an analogy for our spiritual state. The body is such a beautiful vehicle for our soul.” Peter Matthews
Peter Charles Matthews Born in Zimbabwe (Rhodesia), Peter moved to South African to study Graphic Design at the Durban University of Technology. He worked as an Art Director/Creative Director in various advertising agencies until he started his own agency in 1986 - he was the founding partner and Executive Creative Director of Matthews and Charter. By 1992 the agency was rated in the top three most creative agencies in South Africa by Financial Mail and named South African Agency of the Year by Readers Digest. Peter has won many local and international awards for his creative work including Cannes, New York and London International. After 16 years as owner and creative head of M & C, Peter sold his share in the agency to Ogilvy in order to focus on his art and film directing. Peter produced a series of artworks for his first solo art exhibition in Durban in 2000. The following year he had a sell out exhibition in Germany and in 2009 he held a solo exhibition in Cape Town. His work is on display on the Saatchi online Gallery and Hout Bay Gallery in Cape Town. He has produced the illustrations for a South African Children's Book series called Animal Adventures in Africa. The books are now published in various countries around the world. These books form the foundation of a wild life conservation and literacy program in Africa, PawPrint Africa. www.pawprintafrica.com. The book series is now being produced into a 3D animated children’s TV series.

Sumatran Tiger
Sumatran tigers are the smallest surviving tiger subspecies; they are found in the patches of forest on the Sumatra Island. Major threats include habitat loss due to expansion of palm oil plantations and planting of acacia plantations, prey-base depletion and illegal trade, primarily for the domestic market. Despite being given full protection internationally, tiger parts are still found in open trade in Sumatra. Farmers, claiming they were endangering their livestock, have killed many of the tigers. These tigers were then sold to gold shops, souvenir shops, and pharmacies. Farmers are the main hunters of tigers in Sumatra. 58
Northern White Rhino
The Northern White Rhinoceros have been residing on this planet for the past 15 million years, formerly found in several countries in East and Central Africa, south of the Sahara. The rhino horn is highly valued and used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and as a status symbol to display success and wealth. Due to severe poaching, a mere three specimens of the animal are left today from a high of more than 2,000 in 1960. Of the three, only one is a male rhino under 24-hour armed watch and living along with two other female rhinos at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya. He is too old to breed.
African Wild Dog
The wild dog is one of the world’s most endangered mammals. The largest populations remain in southern Africa and the southern part of East Africa. Wild dogs are social and gather in packs of around 10 individuals, but some packs number more than 40. The African wild dog is endangered due to habitat loss caused by human overpopulation, poaching, diseases like rabies and threats from other predators, such as lions and hyenas. If given the chance, lions will kill as many wild dogs and their pups as possible in order to reduce competition.
The Hawksbill Turtle
Named for their narrow, pointed beak, Hawksbill turtles have a distinctive pattern of overlapping scales on their shells that form a serrated-look on the edges. These coloured and patterned shells make them highly-valuable and commonly sold as "tortoiseshell" in markets. Sea turtles are the living representatives of a group of reptiles that has existed on Earth and travelled our seas for the last 100 million years. They are a fundamental link in marine ecosystems and help maintain the health of coral reefs and sea grass beds.

he Airports Company South Africa is passionate about ensuring that its operations do not negatively affect the environment we live in. To this end the King Shaka International Airport has developed and implemented an Environmental Management System. This riskbased system considers all the potential impacts from the activities occurring at and around the airport, and their root causes. These risks are rated on a scale of severity and the highest risks have specialised action plans tailor-made to ensure that they are adequately managed. In 2017 ACSA had an international certification body conduct an audit of the system to gauge its effectiveness. King Shaka International Airport achieved zero findings in the audit and was accredited to the ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System Standard. That adherence to this international standard brings with it the prestige that ACSA is conducting best practice environmental management on site. ACI Airport Carbon Accreditation Programme The Airports Council International (Europe) appointed a consulting firm to assist participating airports in developing four levels of carbon foot print accreditation to understand what the climate change impacts from airports are, and how to manage these impacts in the best possible manner. Four ACSA-owned airports, including King Shaka International Airport, undertook this process and have been accredited to “Level one” of the programme. This is a great achievement in the road to understanding the carbon footprint of aviation, and it’s the start of journey towards carbon neutrality. Level one accreditation involves the determination of the operational boundaries of the airport, and the sources of Scope 1 & 2 emissions as defined by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. The carbon emissions are calculated for the previous year, and a carbon footprint report is compiled. This report is verified by an external independent party to confirm the sources and calculations are correct.
King Shaka International Airport is one of only seven airports in Africa that achieved Level one accreditation, and Level two is within its sights.

PRESCRIPTION & WITHOUT PREJUDICE COMMUNICATIONS

Simon Watson shares his thoughts on Prescription and "without prejudice" communications.
P
rescription is a term often loosely thrown around when discussing overdue obligations. The main source of law around prescription in South Africa is legislation passed in the 1960s called the Prescription Act.
There are two broad categories of prescription being: • Acquisitive prescription - results in the acquisition of a right for example the right to ownership of property which has been openly occupied for an uninterrupted period of thirty years, and • Extinctive prescription - results in a right being extinguished or lost and the most common example is the right to enforce payment of an unpaid debt. The Prescription Act sets different periods after which a debt will prescribe (become unenforceable). Prescription Period Source of Debt

Three years is the most common period after which a debt will prescribe. Three important general principles relating to prescription are: • The starting period for prescription is when a debt is due; • If a debtor acknowledges liability the prescription period is interrupted and starts afresh; and • The service of a summons on the debtor will also interrupt prescription and allow a debt to be enforced. In an important decision by the Supreme Court of Appeal in 2017 (KLD Residential CC trading as Seeff Properties v Empire Earth Investments) the SCA had to decide whether an acknowledgement of a debt forming part of a without prejudice settlement communication could be admitted as evidence for the purpose of interrupting prescription. The dispute revolved around commissions related to ninety nine property sales in respect of which KLD was the agent. One of the defenses to the claims put up by Empire Earth was that registration of most of the properties had taken place three years before summons was issued and as a result most of the claims had prescribed. KLD’s response to the prescription point was devastating. It put up a communication from the Empire Earth’s attorneys acknowledging the debt and the SCA held that despite such communication being made without
A dissenting judgment in the SCA decision was of the view that the without prejudice communication should not have been admissible as this is contrary to public policy and would, it follows, put into question the value of without prejudice communications.

STRUAN CAMPBELL Portfolio Manager PSG Wealth
In this issue of LUXE, Struan shares some insight from Grant Meintjes, Head of Securities at PSG Wealth, on the key considerations when investing offshore, a topic that is forefront in our minds.
Struan has been in the financial services industry since 2003 and with PSG since 2011. He has an Advanced Certified Financial Planning Diploma and is a member of the JSE
OFFSHORE INVESTMENTS
I
t’s 10 years since the beginning of the global financial crisis, and investors are more aware than ever of how portfolio diversification can help protect their investments. These days, a diversified investment portfolio should include both local and international shares. Our securities division offers clients the ability to trade a range of international instruments, including international stocks, real estate investment trusts (REITs), exchange traded funds (ETFs) and American depository receipts (ADRs) on one platform through our offshore partnership with Société Générale (SocGen). How much money can I invest offshore? South Africans have rushed to take cash offshore in the wake of political instability in the country in the last 18 months. Consequently, the question around how much can be taken offshore tends to pop up in dinner conversations. In short, any natural person (who is a South African resident) whose tax affairs are in order can invest R10 million per year with the necessary tax clearance certificates and Reserve Bank permission. In addition, R1 million can be invested annually without any tax clearance certificates. Juristic entities can use PSG Wealth’s institutional (asset swap) allowance to invest offshore without requiring tax clearance certificates. Any cash that has been declared previously and that is held in foreign currency can be invested in shares through our platform, with no need to repatriate the funds to South Africa first. Offshore investment is not (primarily) a rand hedge decision. It might seem strange, but you should not see investing offshore primarily as a rand hedge. Most large companies listed on the JSE derive their income from outside South Africa, thus providing the investor with some rand hedging already. It is therefore better to view offshore diversification as a long-term investment with capital appreciation in mind.
64
An investment strategy can help you avoid temptation Having a clear investment strategy is just as important – if not more so – when diversifying offshore. This is especially true since there are so many potential distractions when investing offshore. There may be some great investment opportunities, but not all will be suited to your investment strategy. An investment strategy starts with a clearly defined goal and action plan on how to achieve your goal with a reasonable probability of success. Companies have multiple listings internationally and investors should be confident that they are buying the correct listing. The same investment principles that apply to local share investing should be followed when investing offshore, namely: • spending quality time researching the companies or sectors to invest in • having a clear investment objective, and defining your trading horizon. A focused portfolio can deliver better results You should be careful not to invest in too many shares, thus complicating your decision-making and diluting your portfolio by inadvertently taking on more exposure to certain sectors than intended. Try and limit your portfolio to between 10 and 15 shares. Your portfolio construction should be based on your specific risk model and can include REITs, stocks, cash and ETFs. Your portfolio construction needs to take the complexities of the markets and the political environment into account and enable you to still achieve your investment goals. Share selection remains important Select shares that have a high level of safety and low chances of a permanent loss of capital. The time horizon of the investment will determine whether you select shares with high earnings or high capital growth prospects. Asset selection diversification will be a key driver in achieving your investment objectives.
Diversification across geographic locations is crucial, as countries don’t necessarily experience growth in sync.
Understanding the CGT treatment of your investment
When investing offshore, you should take note that there are two different CGT calculation methods. It is important to understand which one will apply to your portfolio.
Calculation method 1
Investors who use their individual offshore allowance and individuals and trusts that use PSG Wealth’s asset swap facility share the same calculation method. CGT is calculated by first determining the profit or loss in the base currency of the security transacted and then converting the profit or loss to South African rand at the end-ofday spot rate.
Calculation method 2
Investors using the asset swap facility or investing in the name of a company or investment club will use the second CGT calculation method. This method will calculate the rand value of the purchase and the rand value of the sale on the date of the transaction and reflect the profit or loss in South African rand.
Investing offshore is a valuable diversification exercise and can offer astute investors important growth opportunities that are not available locally. As with any share investment, you need to plan before you take the leap and ensure you have a sound investment strategy in place to help ensure a successful outcome.”

C
ontracts of sale can be signed, scanned and sent back to the conveyancers or agents from anywhere in the world. However, from a conveyancing point of view, the signing of conveyancing documents where a party resides outside of South Africa, is not so simple. Section 63 of the Uniform Rules of the High Court regulates these requirements, and conveyancing documents that are signed overseas can only be used at our Deeds Office if they are properly authenticated.
How will this affect the conveyancing process? Many transactions are concluded where either the buyer or the seller lives or works overseas.
SELLING & MOVING
This can be done at any South African Embassy or consulate service overseas. There is some relief if the person wants to sign in the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Botswana and Swaziland – in those instances a Notary Public in that country can also authenticate the documents that have been signed. Once signed, such documents are then sent back to the conveyancers by courier as the original documents are required to be submitted at the Deeds Office with the authentication certificate. It does help if a Power of Attorney is signed prior to departure from South Africa, enabling a third party to sign some of the documents on behalf of the client. Some documents however cannot be signed under Power of Attorney such as affidavits.
