HOPE IS TO THE SOUL WHAT AIR IS TO THE LUNGS
Text Liza Gresse | Firm Ubuhle HR & Management Consultants | T: 083 633 6548 | E: liza@ubuhlehr.co.za | W: www.ubuhlehr.co.za
When I was a young girl I once nearly drowned. It was terrifying.
10
A
lthough I was a strong swimmer I misscalculated the enormity of an approaching wave. I was engulfed by the water mass and I remember the weight of the water pushing me down into the depth of the ocean. I fought and
struggled to find my way up through the water towards the light and most importantly the air that could fill my aching lungs. I remember the anxiety as I felt my lungs releasing the bit of air that was still within.
Hope is like the sun, which, as we journey towards it, casts the shadow of our burden behind us.” Samuel Smiles
The average person can hold their breath for 30 to 60 seconds, and once you run out of breath under water, your chance for survival is slim. I was running out of air. I tried to look up to see sunlight, and then suddenly the weight of the water subsided and for some seemingly inexplicable reason (or so it seemed in the moment), I suddenly had a huge burst of energy, and the will to get out of the predicament emerged. I could feel myself going up faster and with more force. Maybe I could make it. Perhaps I would make it. Clinging to the hope that I would make it! Breaking through the water-ceiling, I at once filled my aching lungs with the gift of air! This event of near drowning made me reflect on the magic of hope. I realised that hope is to the soul what air is to the lungs. Without hope, the soul dies a slow and painful death. When people lose hope, they lose their ability to dream for the future. Despair replaces joy. Fear replaces faith. Anxiety replaces peace. Insecurity replaces confidence. Tomorrow’s dreams are replaced by nightmares. Without hope, life becomes meaningless. When spouses lose hope, they give up on their marriage. Parents give up on their teens. People give up on their leaders. Healthy emotions like contentment and peace are replaced with the toxic emotions of confusion, shame, worry, and disappointment. HOPE is important! The soul needs hope to survive! When you have lost hope, you have lost everything. And when you think all is lost, when all is dire and bleak, there is always hope. Twenty six years ago I gave birth to twins, two months premature. My baby daughter and baby son weighed a mere 1.5kg and 1.6kg respectively and their chances of survival were
slim. Three days after their birth my precious son passed away. I was devastated. Yet despite the enormity of my loss and sadness, I started focusing on my baby girl. My whole being became focused on the hope of keeping her alive. The challenges of pumping breast milk, feeding her through a tube, making sure she was warm in order not to lose energy and weight as a result of this, bathing her small fragile body, holding her for hours on end while sitting in a hospital ward from 5am to 11pm at night…. everything I did was in the spirit of hope. Hope that she will survive and that I will be able to keep her and guide her through life. Victor E. Frankl, author of Man's Search for Meaning and concentration camp survivor quotes Frederick Nietzsche: “Those who have a 'why' to live, can bear with almost any 'how'.” Hope is living in the possibility that all will work out well. Today my daughter is a beautiful strong young woman, a lawyer and a light to all who meet her and a great blessing to her family.
“Hope is the magic elixirs that energizes dreams, fuels possibilities, and lets you live beyond the limits of your historical thinking. It is not a promise that something you want will happen - it is an invitation to enjoy the possibility of what you want while you and life negotiate the eventual outcome. There is never a good reason not to hope!” Michael Neill With hope the impossible actually starts to look possible - think any person who has survived cancer. With hope difficult things begin to look like they might actually be possible - think Nelson Mandela. Courage replaces fear, and strength chases away powerlessness.
“Man can live about forty days without food, about three days without water, about eight minutes without air...but only for one second without hope.” Hal Lindsey Our beautiful country is currently going through tough times and we have to remind each other daily to not lose hope. In the times that we are living we need hope-givers more than ever before. As South Africans we need to speak of hope and possibilities and then we need to get up and make it work. “Our human compassion binds us the one to the other - not in pity or patronizingly, but as human beings who have learnt how to turn our common suffering into hope for the future.” Nelson Mandela I am reminded of the words of Desmond Tutu: “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.” Let us choose to be the light in order to kill the darkness. Let us start breathing hope and start living in the possibility of a great future.

If Durban is able to offer the best lifestyle in South Africa and the best returns on investment, then it is not surprising that the local property market has continued to exhibit such resilience despite facing volatile political headwinds.”
R
esidential property is unique in that it comprises both “lifestyle” value which speaks to the emotional factors affiliated with property as a “home”; but also “investment” value which is attached to the clinical and economic viability of property as an asset class. Buyers generally fall into either the end-user category, seeking lifestyle ahead of long-term investment value; or the investor category, where returns and capital appreciation are paramount. Some properties are able to tick both boxes, and some areas are well-positioned to keep both end-users and investors equally satisfied. Against this backdrop, I was delighted to stumble upon some international research that held Durban in high esteem on both counts. Indeed, Durban has been ranked number one in South Africa for its lifestyle offering as well as its rental returns, ahead of both Cape Town and Johannesburg. I thought it would be useful to explore these findings in greater detail. Sandra Gordon, our Pam Golding Research Analyst, recently shared the results of a survey conducted by a London-based online estate agency, namely, Nested. Nested created the 2017 Property ROI Index to gain a better understanding of global variations in real estate prices from an investment perspective. Their survey included thousands of properties, either recently sold or currently listed, across 75 global cities in order to calculate the average price of a three-bedroom property. The company then calculated how long it would take for an investor in each city to recoup the property value using Airbnb and the traditional rental market. According to the index, investors in Durban can recoup the value of their property in 167 months using the traditional rental market and just 18 months via Airbnb – the shortest time period worldwide. Thus, Durban was ranked number one globally for its property rental returns. A significant finding that should bring comfort to our local investor market. Lagos was ranked second (at 22 months via Airbnb), followed by Cairo (at 23 months). Johannesburg was ranked fifth, with a repayment period of 180mnths in the traditional rental market and 33 months using Airbnb. Cape Town was ranked in 12th position – taking 205 months to recoup the property value using old school rental markets and 50 months using Airbnb.

However, returns are not the only factor that investors take into consideration. Durban does exceptionally well when taking returns into account, because the ticket price of properties in Durban is lower than that of Cape Town. Indeed, the Cape Town market has seen tremendous growth in the past few years, resulting in returns worsening relative to ticket price. Durban has been slower to grow, but annual price inflation has still been positive when compared to the national average. Cape Town has seen growth of north of 10% per annum for the past three years, with Durban’s growth coming in at around 6%. Umhlanga has enjoyed growth of over 9% per annum and Johannesburg prices have grown at a rate of 4.5% per annum. The national average has been sitting at approximately 4.8%. Durban’s rental returns supersede the other cities with averages of 8% per annum being achieved in the main metro suburbs as compared with the KZN average of 6%. Cape Town’s returns were 9% in recent years, but are now closer to 7% and Johannesburg’s returns are around 5.5%. The national average for rental returns according to the TPN/FNB index is 5.85%. This means that investors seeking the best ROI would be wise to consider the Durban property market. Thus, we have established that property in Durban ticks the investor box, but how does it fair from a lifestyle perspective? Mercer conducts an annual
survey each year in which it ranks cities across the globe according to the quality of life that their residents enjoy (the Mercer Quality of Living Index). In 2016 Mercer ranked Durban as the top South African city, for the third consecutive year, ahead of both Cape Town and Johannesburg. Internationally, the survey ranked Durban 87th in the world, Cape Town followed behind in 94th place and Johannesburg was ranked 96th. Again, Durban’s climate, coastline and convenience, have resulted in the city achieving international acclaim. This global recognition has put Durban on the map, which has also sparked interest from a property perspective. It is indeed encouraging to see KZN coming to the fore, not only as a great place to live, but also because it offers a fertile investment market with excellent rental returns. Our recently launched developments in Umhlanga and Sibaya have attracted foreign investors from Dubai, the UK and Germany. If one applies a longitudinal lens, this could be the beginning of KZN’s season in the sun, where the gap between prices in Cape Town and KZN begins to close. Finally, it seems that foreign investors and locals alike have discovered the city in South Africa that keeps coming up trumps!

PLACE OF REST

A
haven of tranquillity, surrounded by nature, bird and wildlife. Situated in Sheffield Beach, this distinctive eco estate is perfectly named Elaleni, meaning 'place of rest'. Elaleni Coastal Forest Estate boasts centuryold trees and rehabilitated coastal forest, wetland areas, two community orientated leisure centres and will, when complete, also boast a number of architecturally sublime homes, all surrounded by state-of-the-art security. But it really is the overall ambience of Elaleni that sets it apart from other gated communities in the area.
A beautifully unique gated estate set to inspire sustainable living surrounded by coastal forest and all that nature has to offer.
An incredible attention to detail in the planning of the development ensures that, whilst residents will be fully immersed in nature, there will also be a perfect balance of luxurious estate amenities, eco-friendly community living and privacy. With family and community at the heart of Elaleni, the estate offers a retreat from the normal hustle and bustle of everyday life. Imagine long afternoon walks along elevated
boardwalks, along marked trails through the forest, or leisure time at one of the outstandingly designed clubhouses. At the Leisure Centre, spacious family areas inspired by the natural tranquillity emanating from the forest provide everything needed for a full day of rest and relaxation. Uniquely designed braai pods, a lap pool flowing into an enchanting children’s pool, tennis court, and a children’s play area, guarantee a vibrant space. While at the Forest Clubhouse, a magnificently furnished viewing deck with fire pit, glassed studio and cosy hammocks provides a peaceful escape for reading or bird watching.
“Elaleni Coastal Forest Estate is proud to be one of the few estates that are eco-friendly and environmentally conscious. Placing a lot of emphasis on practical architectural design and living to create a sustainable environment”, says Devon de Lange, Sales Manager.
17
Fortunately, those who have bought within Elaleni are like-minded individuals who are nature lovers and mindful of their environmental footprint, especially with the building of their home. Elaleni’s architectural design guideline contains a few mandatory inclusions that will help lessen the environmental footprint and create a unique ecosystem - from having mandatory rainwater catchment off the roofs of each home, to portable water storage instalments per site, as well as having a minimum of 50% solar power for every house. The estate team is currently installing Betafencing around the development and, once complete, will be reintroducing wildlife into the estate, namely Bushbuck and Duiker. With high environmental standards in place, the Elaleni team has embarked on an extensive rehabilitation programme which includes the removal of alien vegetation, guiding the picturesque wetland areas back to pristine condition and ensuring that vegetation deemed sensitive is protected.
“As a result of the rehabilitation plan, we will see a positive impact on the area, with an increase in animal species, birds, and reptiles making this area their home. Elaleni prides itself on being sustainable, conscious of our carbon footprint and mindful of the nature and wildlife within the estate”, says Devon. The estate has officially broken ground and earthworks have begun. The development is on track and residents can be assured that Elaleni Coastal Forest Estate is going to become a spectacular reality in the very near future.

It’s certainly been a very exciting period for retirement on the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).
T
he Retire KZN campaign, initiated by Tongaat Hulett Developments, has highlighted the benefits of retiring within KZN, as well as emphasised the similarities that the region shares with Florida, where 19.1% of the population is over the age of 65, and boasts similar facilities and attributes.
The result is that many of the largest developers in the country are now in the process of developing, or planning, retirement opportunities within KZN, particularly between Umhlanga and Ballito, which is significantly different from years gone by. The new decision makers in the retirement space are the Baby Boomers (born between 1946 and 1964). This generation is very specific about what they want, which is resulting in a real evolution from retirement as we have always known it, and creating a shift in the aging paradigm based on people living and working for longer than they did before. Whereas the generation before, known as the Silent Generation, was accepting of traditional retirement homes. The Baby Boomers are independent thinkers who want to do things on their own terms and who are generally a lot more skeptical about the holistic concept of retirement. The true challenge for developers, and marketers, is to help Baby Boomers understand the need for retirement planning, and to then give them what they are looking for, at the right price. Many Baby Boomers understand that retirement is an unavoidable reality, but the general mindset is that they would still try and avoid making the decision for as long as they can, which is potentially a fundamental oversight in a very key phase of retirement / annuity planning.
WO R D
The developers who can overcome this are those who can place less emphasis on “retirement” and expand more on the lifestyle and hospitality benefits, focusing on health and wellness, incorporating technology, prioritising outdoor spacing, creating multigenerational living and pushing smart, contemporary architecture. It’s no coincidence that the new surge of retirement developments are being led by developers of significant substance, such as the likes of Collins Residential and CenProp. These developers understand that it’s not a simple market and that success is driven by a commitment to putting in the right infrastructure upfront. Most traditional residential apartments, homes or land are comfortably sold off-plan, but in the retirement space there is a much greater need to “touch-and-feel” the product, which means that there is generally a significant increase in sales once homes are complete for prospective buyers to view first-hand. Lazuli Lifestyle and Retirement Estate, near Zimbali, is an example where the developers have quietly gone about the construction of all phase one homes, landscaping and infrastructure without doing any marketing. The result is that when they do introduce their product through marketing, prospective buyers will be greeted by completed units. The same applies to Mount Edgecombe Retirement Village, where the construction is heavily underway with the Care Centre and Phase 1 homes set to be complete when the first residents move in. Shoreline Sibaya, has bucked the traditional trend and created apartment living with a strong resort-style feel. They too will intend to commence construction sooner than any developments would have done historically. With people living longer, and the average Baby Boomer expected to live for 10 – 25 years longer than what their parents did, the retirement space is one residential sector where demand is guaranteed to grow. This thus creates an exciting opportunity for investors who understand the benefits of buying off-plan, and who know that prices will appreciate significantly once units within a new retirement development are complete. With the new-age retirement developers within KZN setting certain trends nationally, it’s no surprise that some of the largest retirement developments in the country are now pro-actively seeking out KZN for the first time. With entities such as Tongaat Hulett and IFA also actively facilitating the creation of retirement opportunities within their existing land holdings, in order to create real opportunities for developers, KZN is rapidly on the way to becoming South Africa’s retirement capital.
Many of the largest developers in the country are now in the process of developing, or planning, retirement opportunities within KZN.” 21
RETI IN STYLE To retire - leave, withdraw, retreat. Kwa-Zulu Natal has positioned itself as the preferred retirement destination in South Africa. And it is no surprise why, considering the plethora of developments available. From dedicated retirement estates to the inclusion of retirement portions within popular family estates, here is a round up of some of the very best that KZN has on offer.

ith your children having left the nest, and your large family home seeming a little empty; perhaps it’s time to take the next step. It’s that time in your life where you need to find a smaller, yet spacious home suited to your current lifestyle and needs. Lazuli Lifestyle and Retirement Estate makes for a perfect new start for those over 50, where they can lead a luxurious, active and social lifestyle surrounded by likeminded neighbours. The challenge for many over the age of 50, is to find the right place to live. The general consensus is that they are still vibrant and active people in their business and personal lives, and quite simply conceive the traditional retirement offering as unconducive to their needs. People do not want to move in to an Old Age Home, where they will have to compromise on their existing lifestyle. This has driven the team at Lazuli to reposition the brand and redefine the reality of active over-50’s living.
The natural amphitheater and outdoor pavilion enhances the estate landscaping as Lazuli has successfully integrated their design with nature. These lush landscapes are further enjoyed as residents can relax and rest assured that they are safe and secure within the boundaries of this 24/7 secure estate. The clubhouse will be a central hub of social interaction with friends, neighbours and families. Easily accessible within the estate, the clubhouse is a place for the Lazuli community to get together or for residents to meet their guests and have a light snack and coffee in comfort and luxury. This is one of the few elite estates that will be able to showcase the vision to buyers as soon as December 2017, when the first units in phase 1 will be complete. This phase includes 23 generously proportioned 2 and 3-bedroom units (174m2 up to 313m2), made up of single level luxury garden villas and sizable freestanding hilltop villas.
Lazuli is set in an unrivaled location, and is leading the property market by setting a new benchmark in sophistication and comfort. This pet-friendly estate is a luxurious setting in the heart of the KZN North Coast, where one can enjoy expansive views of the sea and the rolling hills of sugar cane.
The Lazuli team looks forward to the imminent phase 2 launch consisting of a limited number of sites ranging in size from 600m² to 1500m²; where clients can design and build their own bespoke homes, within an architectural design frame, positioned to compliment the overall estate.
These views set a precedent of exquisite landscapes and natural surroundings within the estate itself; creating picturesque backdrops to walk along dedicated trails, parks, conservation and wetland areas.
In 2018, Lazuli expects to see the completion of the Wellness Centre. This facility will provide basic healthcare services through to integrated medical support, as well as assisted living and home-based care.
22
Coupled with the estates state-of-theart gym, sauna, steam room, swimming pool and dedicated walking trails; the Wellness Centre ensures resident’s complete well-being will be tended to with only the very best facilities. It’s a no-brainer, your next step is Lazuli. www.lazuliestate.co.za

he growing interest in retirement property as an investment opportunity is a result of a few fundamental factors, namely location, demand for the product, capital appreciation and rental
“KwaZulu-Natal is becoming South Africa’s number one retirement destination due to its competitive property prices and relaxed lifestyle, safe and beautiful location options, warm climate and world-class facilities and amenities on offer,” shares Wicus Jacobs, Director of Carmel Properties. One such retirement development that is ideally suited to the investor market is Shoreline Sibaya, situated in the acclaimed Sibaya Coastal Precinct. This pet-friendly retirement estate, developed by Carmel Properties, features modern single-level sectional title apartments, that consist of 1, 2 and 3-bedroom options, with an array of care services provided by the onsite MyCare Centre, which will be built within phase 1. Sibaya Coastal Precinct is KwaZulu-Natal’s premium residential node, and offers security and the benefit of being positioned close to the sea, forest and convenient retail centres. Shoreline Sibaya also neighbours Signature Sibaya Estate, who offer KwaZulu-Natal’s most expensive freehold stands.
24
Mount Edgecombe Retirement Village consists of 1, 2 and 3-bedroom single-level sectional title units, as well as a limited number of freestanding homes, all of which are pet-friendly and epitomise luxury lifestyle living and comfort with the convenience of world-class healthcare on your doorstep. “A project of this magnitude needs commitment from the right brands and people, and it gives me great pleasure to highlight the continuity of this project, as we go into the all-important phase of top structure,” says Murray Collins, Director of Collins Residential. “The beginning of the top structure signifies a huge triumph for Collins Residential and Mount Edgecombe Retirement Village, as we continue to deliver a product that stems from a real
Collins Residential is a leading development company which boasts an impressive record of developments including Zululami Luxury Coastal Estate on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast and Emberton Estate in Hillcrest. The organisation is renowned for setting the precedent in professionalism, quality and delivery, resulting in Mount Edgecombe Retirement Village fast-becoming one of the most sought-after retirement villages in South Africa. Mount Edgecombe Retirement Village is leading as the only retirement estate, within the Greater Umhlanga area, that has reached this point within a number of years; making this a significant moment for retirement within KwaZulu-Natal as a whole. www.merv.co.za
Location is a huge component when it comes to investing in property, and retirement property is no different. With the prized location comes a better capital appreciation expectancy. Other residential developments within the Sibaya Coastal Precinct are expected to enjoy a minimum of 30% capital appreciation between securing a unit and subsequent transfer. This capital appreciation is seen to be further enhanced in the case of an off-plan retirement estate, based on the demand and the fact that Shoreline Sibaya is the only retirement estate in this node. “Off-plan developments like Shoreline Sibaya experience capital appreciation between securing the purchase upfront (with a 10% deposit), and the transfer of the unit on completion. In most cases, the value and demand for retirement property escalates once retirees see the development is complete,” says Jacobs. “Furthermore, when buying off-plan you benefit from not having to pay the transfer duty, which is a huge investment incentive. While those purchasing within Shoreline Sibaya have the additional benefit of not having to pay a levy stabilisation fee, as this is a cost we have taken on,” continues Jacobs. For the elderly, purchasing a retirement home is not always easy, which also creates a strong rental need in retirement property. As a result, investors are seeing larger and more reliable rental yields within retirement property than in traditional residential developments. www.shorelinesibaya.co.za

shortage in the real estate market. Anyone who has seen the site will undoubtedly know that a substantial amount of earthworks has already taken place. One of the most interesting shifts in the world of trends over the last few years has been a renewed focus on emotional and mental wellbeing.
F
or a long time, people were expected to act supremely rationally in the public sphere. In business, particularly, professionalism is equated with a certain emotional stoicism. But increasingly what we’re seeing is an understanding that emotional health isn’t about suppressing feelings, it’s about owning and validating them. That’s why it’s a major theme in the ITI Macro Trend Review this year. This shift in consciousness is changing the way we engage with each other and our world, and it’s rewriting the rules in all kinds of interesting ways. The first thing we’re seeing is people really celebrating emotions rather than trying to avoid them. At a very conceptual level, for example, a designer named Yi-Fei Chen developed a gun that freezes the user’s tears and then allows them to shoot the person who emotionally wounded them in the first place. But people are celebrating positive emotions too – happiness is increasingly on trend as we’ve seen in the so-called “Dopamine Dressing” movement. This comes from the insight that, for many people, clothing can make you happy. So what designers are doing is celebrating the bizarre and outlandish with bright colours and crazy patterns. It’s a reaction against minimalism – where everyone is ultimately the same – and gives people the chance to express themselves and their feelings through their wardrobe. We’re also seeing emotions being explored in the world of technology too. These two seem like strange bedfellows, but ultimately it’s another way that tech is increasingly seeping into our lives. Emotional wearables, for example, are a growing industry at the moment. Unlike traditional wearables like Fitbits and the like, which measure things like movement and heart-rate, emotional wearables allow you to track your feelings and then understand what triggers them. The idea is that you can become more emotionally
literate by connecting the physical reality to the emotional experience, and as a result, improve your performance. At a more conceptual level we’re also seeing tech designers looking at investing their products with “emotional intelligence.” Honda’s new NeuV concept car, for example, has an emotional intelligence engine to understand how the driver is feeling – and theoretically nudge you towards being a better driver as a result. One of the more heartening spin offs of this trend is people increasingly talking about mental health and wellbeing. Ruby Wax, for example, partnered with Marks and Spencer to make use of their in-store restaurants to hold “Frazzled Cafés.” Here, people could come together and just discuss the things that were stressing them out. It wasn’t seen a substitute for formal therapy, but just an acknowledgment that life can be stressful and sometimes it helps to talk about it. On the other side of the world, we’ve also seen “Friendship Benches” in Zimbabwe. This is a grassroots intervention where people who suffer from conditions like depression can meet community mental health workers in a nonthreatening outdoor environment and talk about their situation. It’s about making therapy accessible to everyone and acknowledging that mental health is an issue that affects us all. The big issue under all of this emotional exploration is the idea of empathy. Decades of individualism have left us unable to really put ourselves in the shoes of other people, and many theorists believe that this tendency is behind the current social problems we face in our world. It’s easy to disregard the lives of migrants and refugees, for example, when you can’t conceive of where they come from. And in this country, it’s often difficult for groups to understand why others are so angry, frustrated or emotional about certain issues. It’s a lack of connection that means we’re not able to resolve things as a society, and it’s only if we manage to overcome this that we can move forward together.

Perched high up on the hill above the old town of Ballito sits High Rock House.
T
his steel and glass home of Ballito Architect Charles Taylor is suspended between sea and sky maximising breath-taking views which reach as far as the Durban harbour and Tugela river mouth.
The house is designed around a natural bowl which frames the view and orientates the house. This is experienced as you enter the double volume entrance and the eye is drawn across a 25m rim flow pool to the sea and sky beyond. Â Every room has a magnificent view of the Indian Ocean allowing visitors to watch whales in season and dolphins frolic in the sea. There is glass on three sides of every space in the home to allow maximum light and crossventilation and makes one feel as if you are living in a conservatory. The floor to ceiling tri-slide glass doors span the full length on two sides of each room which creates an indoor-outdoor experience.

The achievement of energy savings and efficiency has significantly lowered the carbon footprint of this home - and who said going green wasn't stylish and elegant?!
With a large serving of space, this luxurious home offers stunning, panoramic views and is set in idyllic surrounds.”
46
A narrow wrap around timber deck surrounds each storey keeping the sun off the wall for most of the day and facilitates access to clean the glass. The passive design principles of the house mean there are no closed off, darkened passages, as all the living spaces and bedrooms are arranged off a central family living area. Wooden floors help create a natural feeling of warmth. Charles was also set on getting the home off the national grid by creating as many effective energy solutions as possible. These include solar panels and heat pumps for heating water, 30,000 litres of rainwater harvesting, photo-voltaic panel and battery system, a wind turbine and an underground rock natural cooling system which harnesses the earth’s temperature at 2m underground which is set at approximately 16 degrees. Jacque’s flair for landscaping is evident with an indigenous garden which encourages birds, butterflies and insects to the property. The design of the garden is centred on courtyards which allows for protection against wind. With three of their four children having left the nest, Charles and Jacque have decided to convert High Rock House into a bed and breakfast and holiday letting opportunity through Luxury Coastal Escapes. They are looking forward to inviting guests to relax, rejuvenate and enjoy all that the North Coast has to offer.
Clever design with a mix of classic and contemporary decor brings quality and style into the home without infringing on the liveability aspect of the space
47
The home has six, spectacularly appointed bedrooms with features such as outdoor showers, sumptuous open plan en-suites and balconies, while the master bedroom, with its walk-in wardrobes, spans the entire width of the top floor. A rim flow pool running the width of the home, tennis courts and beautifully
maintained and landscaped gardens, this home is sure to leave you at a loss for words. Offered by Luxury Coastal Escapes with limited availability for holiday rentals during the year, this family home is lovingly prepared for guests arrival to ensure enough space for belongings, clothes, food and beverages along with all hotel conveniences.
Our Guests pay a premium to stay in our luxury homes and with the knowing that we have personally viewed the home, photographed it and prepared it for their stay gives them the peace of mind to book with us and keep coming back each year.”

CRAWFORD LA LUCIA THE
GOLDEN THREAD
OF ARTS &
Sir Ken Robinson, a tremendous visionary whose thinking has had a profound effect on education, emphatically stated
C
hildren start their educational journey with a natural sense of wonder, curiosity and creativity. In our Pre-Primary, we strive to capture these natural talents and unleash each child’s creative imagination while exploring the Arts of Music, Dance, Drama and Art. When asking a group of young children, who can sing, dramatize a role, create in art or express through dance, all will automatically shout out I CAN!
A real Education has to give equal weight to the Arts, to Humanities and to Physical Education. The Arts aren’t just important because they improve maths scores. They’re important because they speak to parts of children’s’ being which are otherwise untouched.”
Thoughts and ideas come alive through these sensory explorations which link to our basic human need to communicate. Real world fears or challenges are tested and evaluated through active engagement and problem solving. Did you know a bear could be painted blue and wear clothes? And in role play, recycled products are transformed into a fishing rod while dramatizing a “trip to the beach” enriching language as the event unfolds. In Music, sounds, song and rhythm is experienced and often linked to dance, dramatic effect, storytelling and emotional expression. It is in the field of Arts where we can truly boost a child’s self-confidence. There is no wrong or right answer. The children express their unique and subjective interpretation and personality, celebrating the freedom to be ME, to discover who they are and express how they relate to their world. As they move into the next Phase of Learning on our Campus, the world of inspiring the imagination through the Arts continues. A world of endless possibilities! This integral part of our educational journey continues into the Crawford Preparatory where we offer an extensive programme to our pupils. They are afforded the opportunity to choose Cultural Subjects in their various grades as Option Subjects. Music, Art, Drama and Dance are taken as enrichment subjects where students are taught the 52

practical aspects, as well as the theoretical aspects of the subjects. In Music, students attend a practical lesson during a suitable time with a dedicated teacher to master their instrument. Our specialised classrooms for each subject reflect the passion that each department has for their subject and students. In addition to our Option Subjects the Cultural Department offers an extensive programme where students are afforded the opportunity to display their talents. Music festivals, Soirees, External Examinations, Eisteddfods, our unique Drumline, School Choirs and termly progress concerts are but a few avenues for our musicians to enjoy. Our Art department offers a termly club where pupils are extended and enjoy various extension activities. We enter as many art exhibitions as possible, as well as hosting our annual Internal Exhibition as a collaboration of all the Art as a whole school.
CULTURE
Our Drama department builds each child’s confidence and it is not uncommon for students to take a leadership role in assisting staff at various functions. Speech and Drama festivals, Public Speaking and an annual School Production all form part of the Drama year. Dance continues to be extremely popular amongst our students. Various dance styles are offered and students enjoy classes offered termly. Students grow in confidence and learn many valuable life skills whilst enjoying their dance sessions. During the year the dance department have various shows and reviews where they can showcase their talents. Many students (past and present) have excelled on the international scene in this department – a true testament to the subject offering. At College level, our students are nurtured and inspired through our diverse cultural offering which too, encourages each of them to be more confident and self-assured, while affording them with both an academic grounding and an extra-curricular platform on which to creatively express themselves in our local, national and global communities. The Arts are a universal form of human expression critical in fostering the holistic development of our students. Music, Visual Arts, Drama, and Dance, and even Public Speaking, as social, intellectual, and physical disciplines, enable each of our students to be a masterpiece in his or her own right through the realization and maintenance of his/her unique creative potential.
The Cultural Department is dedicated to ensuring that the students receive the best possible opportunity to enjoy their talent or learn a new skill. The staff are professional in their approach and have much experience to ensure that all students “be the best that they can be”.
The cultural ethos at Crawford College La Lucia embraces both cultural and creative diversity. Students who are exposed to the art of past and present cultures learn about themselves, the society in which they live, and people throughout history. At a deeper level, it is Cultural activities, specifically through the performing and visual arts, which allow our students to develop a sense of community and belonging, through collaboration and accountability. The study of Art, Drama, Dance and Music in the IEB academic curriculum on offer at the College up to Grade 12 which taught by subject specialists in their respective fields, is re-enforced by our extensive cultural extra-curricular programme whose purpose is to enrich all facets of our students’ beings by providing the means for the well-rounded development of their emotional, intellectual, social and cultural, individual intelligences. The Cultural Programme at Crawford La Lucia also plays a significant role in the personal development of our students. The confident, creative and capable students who develop from the rich artistic explorations and experiences we have on offer are better prepared to go into the world and become innovative leaders who in turn make a difference to our world.

any people do their own hair, nails and make-up every day and wonder what the point would be to study beauty therapy. Like in other areas, there are some beauty therapy skills that can be self-taught, and other skills that can only be acquired through formal training. If you want to work as a beauty therapist, either by starting up your own business or by seeking employment in a salon, you will need to go for formal training in beauty therapy. At Beauty Specialist Training Centre, we offer internationally accredited modular courses and you can concentrate your studies on the specific area that you are interested in or you can opt to go all the way. Courses offered can be a stepping stone towards careers in beauty therapy, sales for cosmetic companies, cosmetic development, travel opportunities such as working abroad and on the cruise liners, and others might even want to pursue lecturing in the beauty field. Imagine working for the leading spa operator on board luxury cruise ships, Steiner operates spas on over 150 luxury cruise ships sailing the seven seas. Beauty Specialist Training Centre offers select courses where students can qualify for an interview with Steiner. This could very possibly lead to a successful career working at sea on cruise ships! Training is aimed at school leavers starting their career, as well as adult learning for those who now have the time to broaden their skills or wish to start a new career path. This can be for self-employment or to attain personal skills.

Courses can be done over a 6-month or 1-year period, depending on how much time you would like to put in or, if you are working full-time and do not have the time for full-time studies, you can attend part-time evening classes or workshops. Students fees include full student kits and includes everything needed for the course, as well as their uniform (formal and casual) and exam fees. We offer a high standard of theory and hands-on practical classes by highly qualified lecturers. Our lecturers are constantly improving their own skills through continued studies and research to ensure that our students get the best training available. Beauty students extend their skills by doing product house training, getting to know additional products and exposure
to what is current in the market. Case studies are required as part of the practical portion and this gives students the opportunity to work on clients under their lecturer’s supervision and to familiarise themselves with sequences and procedures prior to doing practical examinations, moderated by UK lecturers. Exams are scheduled for June and November each year.

Bold, spacious modern design - balancing the architectural with the interior to create a striking aesthetic appeal
Set into the picturesque coastal suburbia of the Dolphin Coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal, this home is an architecturally bold work of art.

here Dream Retirements come true...If you've worked hard and have been successful your entire life, your kids are grown and you and your life partner want to scale down, but you have really big dogs and no desire to lock yourself into an estate - then you find the ultimate piece of land with spectacular breaker views, employ a team of awesome architects and designers and watch your dream home come true! Designed by Metropole Architects, this contemporary home celebrates the KZN North Coast year round warm coastal climate, local indigenous flora and fauna and of course the magnificent 180 degree panoramic sea views.
“The residence represents and uninhibited architectural expression free from the restrictive stylistic design guidelines typically found in the numerous gated housing estates located in the area, says Metropole Architects. 58
What a pleasure to work with such professionals! Compliments to Metropole Architects, who not only designed but effortlessly project managed this magnificent coastal build.” Schanè Anderson, OLALA INTERIORS
A comfortably luxurious space for the family to enjoy the relaxed, coastal lifestyle. The perfect positioning and placement of decor and functional furniture creates an abundance of space and light.
The house stands proud on its steep site and is a progressive cantilever form arranged over three cascading levels that proclaims its presence and pioneers a paradigm shift in the architectural design language of its contexts. The entrance façade is intentionally low slung, minimalist and austere and hard up against the western site boundary, resulting in an architecture that visually engages with the street. A linear plan form stretching across the entire width of the site is set back from the street by the width of a double garage structure. This allows for maximum open and sheltered private space
used for the purpose of living, entertainment, relaxation and enjoyment of the sea view. The architecture aims to impress right from the start. The strong horizontal line created by the roof over the recessed entrance area, together with the vertical lines of the flanking walls, create a framed view through the house to the ‘big blue’ beyond.
“This bold architecture brings the great South African coastal outdoors in and then, in turn, encourages the inhabitants to venture out into it”, expands Metropole Architects.
59
The textures and palette used throughout the home work hand in hand with all the interior finishes to blend perfectly together
OLALA INTERIORS' journey with the clients on this fabulous home initially
started with specifications of the soft furnishings, but this progressed to the detailing and design of the interior architectural and functional elements.
“We effortlessly mastered the complex interior design, specification and refined detailing on this project, because of good design principles created and implemented by the architect”, says Schanè Anderson, OLALA INTERIORS.
Incredibly proud (and rightly so) of the beautiful cabinetry, which is testament to good functional design and exceptional craftsmanship, OLALA INTERIORS specially designed and custom made the bespoke furniture pieces and furniture. All the bathroom vanities, cabinetry, solid wood dining table, plasma units and built-in cabinetry were manufactured in their own factory, based in Shakashead. The result is a world-class quality installation. Grant Pitcher, the photographer who truly captured the essence of the home, sums it up beautifully. “From the moment I walked in the
door of this home I felt welcome. Welcome to showcase the magnificent architecture that made every aspect of this home a majestic viewing space for the Indian Ocean below. The colour palette and design of the interiors within allow the spaces to feel like a home. It was such a treat to capture the location in beautiful light and display vibrant imagery that are testament to good design.” 60
OLALA INTERIORS designed and manufactured all the
cabinetry, bathroom vanities and furniture. Every piece of furniture custom designed and scaled.

FINANCIAL INTELLIGENCE CENTRE ACT
Will the revised Act still be a four letter word?
T
he Financial Intelligence Centre Act (FICA) has been operating since 2001 and South African citizens will be happy to note that it has recently been revised to bring it into alignment with global practices, as well as to toughen up its focus of fighting money laundering as well as the financing of terrorism. FICA BEFORE ITS REVISION When FICA first came into play, South Africa opted for a more blanket approach which meant that everyone was subject to FICA, ultimately affecting the entire population. Every time someone opened a new account, took a new insurance policy or entered into any financial based agreement (buying property, bonding, investments, etc), they were obliged to submit FICA documentation, and an identity document as well as proof of residence were required each time. In other countries, we saw a more riskbased approach being taken, in which case the focus was based on the risk involved with that particular client / type of client. In South Africa, there are numerous instances of people having to repeatedly re-submit FICA documentation which has become frustrating for both businesses and their clients.
The FICA process did not allow for any exceptions and if you failed to submit your documents on time, you would not be able to use your bank account or process any financial transaction. THE MAIN CHANGES From June 2017, the revised FICA requires a risk-based approach in order to bring it in line with Global practice. The revisions come into effect in a two-pronged approach, the first being in June and then the balance following on October 2017. Essentially, Financial institutions will need to identify both foreign 'Prominent Public Officials' and domestic 'Prominent Individuals' and Due Diligence will be an ongoing process. 'Know Your Customer' (KYC) now means that officials need to assess the risks involved with the above mentioned customers and not just the individual but also whether they operate via any trusts or other legal entities. There is a list of people who may qualify as domestic Prominent Individuals; such as politicians (both local and national), officers of State Operated Entities, CEOs and finance directors of large companies. Ongoing due diligence will need to be done on these groups of people and the onus is on the financial institution to ensure compliance with FICA. South Africa has signed International agreements and will thus assist the United Nations Convention against corruption; accordingly the Act gives the power to freeze transactions for ten days whilst
“Have not had service like this from any of our attorneys ever.” “You’ve made buying my first home a real pleasure.” “Thank you so much for always keeping us informed during this whole process.”
investigating potential perpetrators. Perhaps most importantly, it will make things more difficult for money launderers and other fraudsters to commit crimes. The implication of this is that FICA should become relatively straightforward for most people as the previously onerous requirements of FICA should lessen for them. For now, all we can do is wait and see but the idea behind the amendment should make it easier for most businesses and individuals.

As FICA was more a set of principles, we found that Banks / Financial Institutions often had differing requirements such as for a proof of residence, some banks accepted cell phone / Telkom accounts emailed to the recipient whilst others only accepted utility bills /documents physically delivered to a home address.

SAVING FOR YOUR
FUTURE
Text Shreekanth Sing (Technical Legal Adviser) and Struan Campbell (Portfolio Manager)
Often when we think of saving, it’s for a short- to medium-term goal such as a holiday, or a down payment on a house. But what about thinking further into the future? One of the best ways to do this is to consider saving in a retirement fund.
W
e have found that political uncertainty and market volatility, not to mention the pressure of a shrinking economy, may lead many investors to allocate the bare minimum to retirement funds.
These funds, however, offer many distinct benefits that you may not be aware of, and reducing retirement savings due to shortterm pressures may not be in your long-term best interest. This is even more pertinent as we are living longer, and retirement savings will probably have to be stretched. Therefore, any overall savings plan must take retirement savings into consideration. What counts as a retirement fund? A retirement fund is a pension, provident or retirement annuity fund that is used to house and grow your pre-retirement savings, so that you can generate an income from your investments once you retire. Now I am sure all of us know a relative or friend with a horror experience of contributing for years and years to a retirement annuity only for it to mature with a lot less than they expected; or they signed up for something with excessive fees; or when they tried to pause premiums for affordability reasons were faced with substantial penalties. While unfortunately a variety of those products still exist, modern platforms – such as that offered by PSG – operate at far lower fee structures, do not impose penalties for changes you make, and even offer direct share portfolios within the retirement wrapper. They truly have embraced the flexible needs of today’s savvy investor. BENEFITS OF A RETIREMENT FUND Tax deductions on contributions Contributions to a retirement fund are tax deductible up to 27.5% of the higher of taxable income or remuneration, capped at R350 000. However, many people are not aware that retirement funds also allow you to offset contributions that were not previously deducted. They can be used to lower the tax payable on the lump sum cash portion taken at retirement, and even the tax payable on the income from your annuity.

Costs As referred to above, the financial services industry has become a lot more competitive and is working in your favour when it comes to cost. Tougher regulations also ensure that all fees are transparently disclosed. Protection Retirement funds provide protection should investors experience tough times. Funds within a retirement fund cannot be attached. If you are not able to repay your debts, or are declared insolvent, your retirement funds are protected from creditors allowing you time to get back on your feet.

Sound investment principles Retirement funds are regulated by the Registrar of Pension Funds, governed by Boards of Trustees, and must adhere to the asset allocation limits as set out in Regulation 28 of the Pension Funds Act. Regulation 28 aims to protect the investor by encouraging sound asset allocation decisions. By limiting the exposure to certain types of assets, the regulator aims to ensure that investors don’t ‘bet’ all their money on a potentially volatile asset class, putting their ability to retire as planned at risk.

Navigating the complexities of planning for retirement can be daunting – especially in an environment where: • investment returns are expected to be lower than in the recent past • medical advances help us live longer, which means that your retirement income will need to last longer • expenses are increasing It is important to be aware of the benefits offered by retirement funds and to use them more effectively when saving for your retirement.
We all know that retirement is inevitable. For some, it may still feel distant, but it isn't as though it arrives unexpectedly. Plan for it while you can and make the most of the time you have to invest.”
Tax-free growth A tax-efficient investment vehicle enhances the returns achieved by investors over the long term. Within a retirement fund, no taxes are paid on interest, capitals gains or dividends. This means your money effectively grows faster than it would in a taxed product.
STRUAN CAMPBELL Portfolio Manager | PSG Wealth
Free from estate duty Retirement funds are free from estate duty, which is typically levied at 20%. At death, retirement fund benefits are paid to your dependents, ensuring that your family is able to use the funds when you are no longer around. Your retirement benefit can help maintain your family’s standard of living after your death.
Struan has been in the financial services industry since 2003 and with PSG since 2011. Prior to that he spent many years in the professional yacht racing arena in the USA. He spends many early mornings surfing and with a family home overlooking Tiffanies at Salt Rock, Struan considers himself a Dolphin Coaster despite living in Umhlnga.

There are a few small steps to follow to make infant massage successful. Keep interaction the main aim, rather than getting the massage routine right. Keep in mind, touch is natural, and massage is simply stylised touch.

assaging your baby allows for bonding, ensuring extra feel good hormones are released by baby, mum and dad. And if you are lactating, prolactin and oxytocin are released ensuring a plentiful milk supply. Get the room ready. Usually babies are “in the buff ” when getting massaged, so ensure the room is warm, put on a heater and close the windows. If you find a heater too hot and uncomfortable for yourself, then preheat the area with a heating pad under the bed linen, then switch off or onto low once you start. Ensure items like a spare nappy, massage oil and milk are ready. Babies can get thirsty after and during massage. Often it’s giving your baby the comfort of a familiar feed that allows you to continue massage. Just be warned, if your baby does feed in between, no tummy massage. Use cold pressed vegetable oil. You may ask why not just use any oil or lotion? Cold pressed oils retain their natural antioxidant goodness. This means minerals, vitamins and omegas can be absorbed by your baby’s skin. Also, if baby puts her foot/hand into her mouth or eyes, there will most likely be no reaction. Steer clear of nut oils though, until you have established your baby’s unique allergy tolerance. I find
Grapeseed oil a lovely light oil to start with. Where to begin massage. The legs and arms are probably the best place to start massage, whether you have done it many times before or this is your first try. This is because it feels safe for your baby, and it is easier for mums and dads to control a leg or arm. Keep the strokes going in an upward direction towards the chest, this improves blood flow around the whole body. Some babies do not like massage, and so here you have to choose whats best for your baby. Keeping massage sessions to just the legs for a while, and keeping sessions short is one way to ensure success. Under 7 minutes. Or switch it up and do a few massage movements while baby is in the bath. Keep the massage short and do some more later in the day. Increase this time slowly, and suddenly you will have your kids lining up for their daily dose. Babies sometimes love massage and then suddenly not. Use this unusual and sudden change to your advantage. It may be the first clue that your baby may be at the beginning stages of getting sick. And it may also indicate that baby has had a stressful day, and so extra cuddles are required.
Keep it fun and light-hearted, a time for bonding, a time to reconnect after being apart and for getting to know one another. The key to successful massage is to make your massage routine fit your family's unique needs. touch, only 7 minutes, in the morning, in the night. That’s also okay, I am sure you know a few of your friends who would rather never hug. Sensory integration takes time, patience is the answer here. Touch should never be forced, no matter the age. Keep listening to your infants unique verbal, and non verbal clues. Some parents who have children with special needs, have found massage to be an especially special bonding experience, a time of quiet non verbal communication and attachment to one another.
Babies of any age can benefit from massage. Massage can help increase sleep, improve restless sleep, reduce muscle pain for toddlers who are just crawling and walking while improving motor skills, massage can reduce stuffy noses, and can improve digestion. At times babies appreciate songs or rhymes and talking during the massage, simultaneously stimulating language skills. And yet, at other times, a quiet peaceful room, to increase sleeplessness, is most useful.

ne reason, for example, is that prior to 1996 and the introduction of the Constitution the ‘fairness’ of a contract was not generally relevant to its validity.
Our law still follows the legal maxim pacta sunt servanda which translates to “agreements must be kept”. This means that whatever is agreed to in a contract must be upheld. If a party fails to uphold their end of the bargain, they can be forced to do so by a court order and may be ordered to pay damages.

application, is unfair to the point that it offends against public policy, our courts are unlikely to uphold such an agreement. This approach was recently illustrated in a judgment in the Johannesburg High Court in Mohamed’s Leisure Holdings (Pty) Ltd v Southern Sun Hotel Interests (Pty) Ltd.
The basis for the general rule is that when parties knowingly and voluntarily agree to the terms of a contract they should be held to their agreement.
Mohamed’s leased property from Southern Sun. In terms of the lease, rent was due by the seventh day of each month. Due to an error by Mohamed’s bank, payment of one installment was late. On discovery of the late payment, Mohamed’s immediately paid Southern Sun, with interest.
The exceptions to the rule were few and included instances where the provisions of an agreement were illegal, or so offensive as to be against the good morals of society.
However, Southern Sun canceled the lease and claimed damages on the basis of the late payment and they were entitled to do so in terms of the lease.
The benefit of a strict application of the rule is legal certainty. This certainty assures businesses and members of the public that the agreements they lawfully conclude will be carried out and, if not, they can obtain redress in court.
The clause allowing the cancellation was not necessarily unfair (it is a common clause in leases), but the court had to decide whether to allow the application of the clause by strictly applying the general rule, or to relax the rule and refuse the claim on the basis of fairness.
Since the Constitution, our law has been developed by the courts to recognise the imprecise principle of fairness when deciding whether to enforce an agreement. If it can be shown that an agreement, or its
In the circumstances, where it was Mohamed’s bank that made the error, the court held that it would be grossly unfair to enforce Southern Sun’s claim and it was dismissed.
