right, sunshine-filled days make for the perfect winter here in KwaZulu Natal. Definitely the enviable place to be at this time of year, we see both local and international visitors flocking to our province. In this particular issue, we share stories from various sources who expand on the amazing developments and overall growth in KZN. Rejuvenation seems to be the buzzword of the year, either by transforming whole swaths of disused land and literally building new precincts, or renovating areas that have, up until now, been sadly neglected. Work undertaken by developers, local municipalities and UIP's (Urban Improvement Precincts) are showing tremendous results. We're all about water in this issue and our feature on Vamizi Island Villas is ever so suitable. Situated on the east coast off Mozambique, the architectural vision of this island development

anything to go by, this is going to be the must-see cultural event of the year.
Fancy a 'blank canvas' wedding? Have a look at our feature on what promises to be one of the hottest new venues on the North Coast. As the team who styled the shoot have shown, a stunning venue combined with creative, original suppliers and organisers can produce an absolutely remarkable occasion.
To our contributing writers who bring us diverse, interesting articles that all manage to come together to celebrate our province, thank you.

News UKZN STUDENT WIN Jean-Pierre Desvaux De Marigny from the University of KwaZulu-Natal wins the 30th Corobrik Architectural Awards. New and distinctive ideas, a high standard of technical skill, creative flair, a good grasp of sustainability issues and a clear understanding of the complex role of built structures within an evolving urban environment were just some of the reasons why Jean-Pierre Desvaux De Marigny from the University of KwaZulu-Natal won first prize at the Corobrik Architectural Awards in Johannesburg recently. The competition, which has spanned three decades, has seen considerable changes in how young professionals in the architectural professional approach the built environment. Today, technological advances and sustainability imperatives are driving creativity. Innovation with a view to lightening the built environment’s environmental footprint together with an innate understanding of social and cultural imperatives within SA are just some of the reasons that this year’s judges singled out De Marigny’s dissertation.
FAT B I K I N G W I N N E R Pedal Africa and Luxe Magazine are happy to announce the winner of the competition for a beach fat biking experience and lunch for 4 people at Prince's Grant. De Marigny was one of eight regional winners from the country’s major universities who were chosen during 2016. Each winner became a finalist who competed for the national title. His thesis, entitled ‘Design for [bio] diversity’, explored the potential of architecture for ecological conservation, proposing an environmental awareness and water research facility in the context of Springfield industrial park/uMgeni River catchment area in Durban. Images courtesy of Iyer - the driving force behind the built environment and planning for a number of iconic projects in Durban
Durban is the heart of the KwaZulu Natal Province and there is a new buzz coming out of the City. A new vision is taking shape and redefining the role of the CBD.
T
here is a series of exciting projects that are having a huge impact on the City and together, with the Inner-City regeneration program, there are significant and noticeable improvements taking place. Both the City and the private sector are pushing to deal head on with the crime and grime, while authorities are rethinking the issues surrounding traffic and road safety, including that of pedestrians. Large scale private sector investments are taking place, buying into the Inner-City regeneration plan. Some of the former stunning buildings of Durban that have suffered from years of neglect are being renovated and restored and put to new use. Whole precincts are changing, enhancing the public space.

These projects will breathe life into the city and provide opportunities for private sector investors and service providers with opportunities for restaurants, residential accommodation and office developments. The eThekwini Municipality is being progressive in attracting new business in the city with the setting up of what it calls the ‘one stop shop”, which is set to improve the regulating framework, giving support for new and existing investors. This programme is aimed at cutting through the red tape issues that so often throttle business developments. With the setting up of new urban development zones these UIP precincts make provision for special rating
SOME OF THE PROJECTS TAKING PLACE ARE: • The R22 billion Integrated Rapid Transport network, the biggest infrastructural project the City of Durban has ever undertaken; • The R24 billion waterfront development which forms part of the Inner-City regeneration program; • The mixed-use precinct project which will including a new City Library and a natural science museum; • The R1.3 billion Warwick Triangle redevelopment project; • The future development of the Virginia Airport site; • The proposed Kings Park sporting project; and • The upgrading of the beach front.

areas, where rate payers can choose to pay a fee, which is collected on their behalf to improve the area in which the properties are situated. Feedback on UIP’s in Durban have been positive, improving safety and cleanliness within these zones. Another area which is set on a renewed journey of revival is Florida Road, with its unique location between Umhlanga and Durban City, it has an unrivaled position and is set to further improve an already popular destination. The potential of this area is being further unlocked with some exciting new developments. One of the private sector companies making substantial investments into both Florida Road and the Durban inner city regeneration is Urban Lime Properties. Urban Lime Properties is an innovative commercial property regeneration company that specialises in transforming and regenerating urban landscapes, transforming areas into vibrant communities. One significant project is the Durban Club Place Professional Quarter within the CBD, which is an important step in the regeneration process for the City. This multi-million rand project on Durban Club Place, (located near the High Court in Durban and currently home to approximately 150 Advocates) has already commenced with renovations and will be complete by mid 2018. Six Durban Club Place will feature new reception and arbitration room and executive lounge, with banqueting facilities. Opposite, at Durban Club Chambers (the former Nedbank building by premiere Modernist architect Norman Eaton) ground floor renovations Durban Club will soon be complete and works will commence on the upper floors, include a level of meeting rooms, mediation suits, arbitration rooms, private board rooms and a lecture theatre. The exciting brand new private members club will launch and includes a roof top restaurant, bar and private dining rooms with beautiful garden access. Public space between these buildings will be landscaped and pedestrianized with renovations to all street facing spaces. New shops, restaurants and coffee shops are already signing up for space. This project forms part of a planned regeneration of the whole precinct and includes a new state-of-the-art security system. It is encouraging that private investors such as Urban Lime believe in the potential of Durban and are investing in its future.

YOUR POTENTIAL & ASTOUND YOURSELF
I am always in awe of human potential. The possibilities human beings are capable of accomplishing is what I call the magic ingredient of life.
Text Liza Gresse

Firm Ubuhle HR & Management Consultants
I
firmly believe that every single person has the potential to achieve extraordinary things if they take time to discover, acknowledge and honour their potential.
I have the wonderful privilege to work with human potential. My work takes me into various organisations across the globe where I advise on productivity within. Productivity is directly linked to actualisation of human potential. The main purpose of my work is to assist people to discover their own potential and to develop behaviours that will release their unique magic in order for them to be successful in whatever they want to achieve. So what is human potential? Human potential is the possibilities human beings are capable of accomplishing. When engaging with people through my workshops or coaching sessions, I usually have to remind them that all of us were given the gift of human potential. Within each and every one of us lies the potential of possibility. All of us have the promise of success within us. All of us have the potential for greatness. I often share an old Sioux Indian legend with my delegates to bring this awareness into reality: “In ancient times the Creator wanted to hide something from the humans until they were ready to see it. He gathered all the other creatures of

creation to ask for their advice. The eagle said: “Give it to me and I will take it to the highest mountain in all the land,” but the Creator said, “No, one day they will conquer the mountain and find it.” The salmon said, “Leave it with me and I will hide it at the bottom of the ocean,” but the Creator said, “No, for humans are explorers at heart, and one day they will go there, too.” The buffalo said,” I will take it and bury it in the very heart of the great plains,” but the Creator said,” No, for one day even the skin of the earth will be ripped open, and they will find it there.” The creatures of creation were stumped, but then an old blind mole spoke up. “Why don’t you put it inside them – that’s the very last place they’ll look.” The Creator said, “It is done.” The last place that human beings search for their potential is within themselves. They often search in all the wrong places and are so focussed on the external life that they forget to look within themselves for the gift that was hidden within. In our quest to discover our potential, I often advise people to not indulge in the following behaviours, as it leads to the death of possibility: Excuses: We all make them, every day. Sometimes we’re not even aware that we make them. They’ve

become a part of our lifestyle. Every person in the whole world has the exact same amount of hours in a week as you. So how are you spending yours? Excuses are self-made obstacles that stop you from reaching your full potential. “The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.” Ralph Waldo Emerson Have you ever looked at someone really successful and thought, “Wow, I’d love to have what he/she has!” Not just the material things, but also the motivation, ambition, work ethic, success, career? Has the following then entered your mind? “They must be really lucky”; “They must be really intelligent”; “They must have been at the right place at the right time”; “They must be mad, obsessive control freaks that sacrificed a lot and stepped on others to get to the top.” If the answer to any of these is yes, then I’m afraid to inform you that you are one of these people who let excuses lead their lives, and in doing so, you run the risk of never reaching your full potential and never being successful. Fear: “Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow.” Ralph Waldo Emerson It’s natural to be scared or apprehensive about a new stage in your life. What are you afraid of? Trying and not succeeding? Wouldn’t you say that
I am here for a purpose and that purpose is to grow into a mountain, not shrink to a grain of sand. Henceforth will I apply all my efforts to become the highest mountain of all and I will strain my potential until it cries for mercy.” Og Mandino
They can handle unexpected happenings easier than others, they have a thankful attitude about what life has to offer them, they are able to have meaningful relationships, and has a concern for people around them. Discovering and reaching one’s potential is the ultimate expression of a person’s existence.
you had the guts to try, rather than you were too afraid to? Ditch the fear! How can you ever attain success if you’re afraid of it? “Failure doesn’t mean you are a failure it just means you haven’t succeeded yet.” Robert H. Schuller Doubt: “Believe in yourself and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle.” Christian D. Larson If you constantly doubt your talents, your skills or your abilities, you will never know what you are actually capable of. You will never discover your full potential. You really need to believe in yourself. Selfconfidence is a characteristic that I believe people are drawn to; it can be one of the most endearing qualities about someone. If you really don’t think you have the skillset you need, brush up on them!
Practicing certain behaviours will bring an individual to full discovery and self-actualization. Here are a few I would like to share with you: • Keep the wonder, curiosity and inquisitive nature of a child. • Be willing to attempt new activities with an open mind. • Stay honest, even when unpopular when you disagree with those you come in contact with daily. • Work diligently and intelligently at all your tasks or duties. • Discover the person you are, all that is important in your life, and what you desire of life. • Do not shy away from new challenges and experiences. • Always be accountable for your actions and life. “The important thing is this: to be ready at any moment to sacrifice what you are for what you could become.” Charles Dickens
As soon as you start to believe in yourself and your abilities, you’ll be amazed at how many doors will open for you and how many opportunities you will now want to seize because you know you can.
Maximizing your potential is about doing things you never knew you could do and reaching heights that you can only dream about. It’s about pushing yourself to become a better and stronger person. When you break down your limits and barriers, you stop holding yourself back and do more than you thought possible.
People who have discovered the gift of their own potential are the most spontaneous and creative in their lives, because they feel self-actualized.
As Thomas Edison once said, “If we did all the things we were capable of, we would literally astound ourselves.”
“Every man’s work, whether it be literature or music or pictures or architecture or anything else, is always a portrait of himself.” Samuel Butler
My challenge to you today is: “What are you waiting for? Go, discover your potential, your own magic and astound yourself!

THOKOZANI AT DIEMERSFONTEIN

aunched in 2006 by wine farmers, David and Sue Sonnenberg, who passionately believe that training and development is fundamental to sustainable economic empowerment in South Africa. As a result Thokozani is a working partnership between Diemersfontein and employees. The staff own 80% of the business. Since its inception, the Thokozani label was focused on training professional development of the shareholders. Thokozani wines trades alongside Diemersfontein, offering a range that complements the label. The Thokozani label includes a Shiraz, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier and a Rosè. The Ovation Range includes a Merlot, Pinotage and a Sauvignon Blanc. They are the only BBBEE Company in South Africa to sign exclusively with Woolworths nationally in 2015.
THE TOWNSHIP WINERY
N
omhle Zondani, the owner of South Africa’s very first township winery, grew up impoverished in the Cape Town township of Langa. Mentored while she was still a youngster by wine industry legend, Graham Knox, when Nomhle finished her stint at the Cape Wine Academy, the “unthinkable” idea was born to start a winery on the Cape Flats. The first vines were planted in 2011. Today similar wineries under the same label are thriving in Nyanga, Khayelitsha, Gugulethu and Philippi on grower or leased land. Now The Township Winery wines are exported all over the world. The labels include Outlaw (Chenin Blanc and a Shiraz blend), the Flats (Pinotage and Viognier), Jack & Knox (Chardonnay and Frostline Riesling), Dido (Shiraz, Pinotage and Pinot Grigio) and lastly, the award winning Philippi Sauvignon Blanc 2010 that won 6th best in the Sauvignon Blanc category in South Africa in the Old Mutual Trophy Challenge.

THEMBI WINES
ualified nurse, Thembi Thobi had a passion for wine and through perseverance and determination became a self-taught vintner and wine connoisseur. She went on numerous trips to the Cape’s finest wine houses where she developed an understanding of the complex industry. Regular wine tasting helped her to develop a true palette, while research and attendance at various wine courses resulted in the Thembi Wines launch in 2009. After four years in a partnership she took full ownership of the company. The Thembi Wine label includes a Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinotage Rosè. Thembi has recently added some of her own exclusives which are the low alcohol Sangarita and Taste Passion Fruit, a Sauvignon Blanc based wine, which she says, were created for the African palette.

The award winning brand offers two different ranges – a premium and reserve wine – made up of six single varietals.

ith a career in property spanning more than two decades, Fiona Crago certainly has made her mark in the real estate industry. Starting her career at Pelham Properties (now Remax Midlands) in 1995 and making the move to Remax Ballito in 1997, Fiona fondly remembers the holiday feel of the (very small) town so many years ago. "In those days, 80% of property sales in Ballito were for the holiday market, we had one coffee shop in town where all the agents would gather to catch up", she laughs. Onward to Pam Golding Ballito where she excelled as top agent in KZN for 10 years in a row. On the 12th July 2007, Fiona took a leap of faith and started her own firm, simply called Fiona Crago Real Estate, which is now celebrating 10 successful years. Joined by Robyn Jackson a month later, these two woman have successfully forged a niche clientele in the KZN North Coast area. "Our team is perfectly balanced and together we provide a winning formula for our clients", says Fiona. Specialising in high-end residential, commercial and industrial and
farm sales, Fiona Crago provides personal, professional service. "Many of our clients are loyal to our firm and some we have retained since our inception", says Fiona. "We would like to thank our loyal clients who have certainly helped us achieve this successful milestone", she continues. With recent addition, administrator Jade Joffe joining the team, Fiona is positive and passionate about the future of the firm, which she plans to expand in the near future.
A passion for selling real estate and having our firm in an area that is a mix of being highly sought after, prosperous and regarded as one of the 3 best places to semigrate to in SA, has enabled us to succeed and thrive.”

owever, sentiment is largely driven by emotion, and sometimes, it helps to look at facts and figures to establish a clearer picture of the status quo.
A few interesting facts reveal that property in KZN is indeed resilient. In particular, our northern coastal corridor appears to be weathering the storms. The New World Wealth’s top ten residential estates list published in August 2016, cited Zimbali Coastal Resort as the second best security estate in the country, after Val die Vie in Paarl. It considered factors like security, activities, facilities, architecture, design and views as part of the rationale behind its selection, and one of the big factors that was taken into account was price growth potential.
Generally, we are seeing better price inflation in security estates than freestanding homes, and the investor confidence in estates continues to be strong.” Also noted in the New World Wealth reports was the fact that luxury retirement estate living is on the rise in South Africa, along with luxury apartment living and the emergence of hotel residences. The move towards convenience and security is stronger than ever, and this trend is continuing. Oceans in uMhlanga offers hotel residences linked to the five star Radisson Blu Hotel, and these have fetched excellent prices with strong demand from Johannesburg investors. The new retirement estates in Mount Edgecombe and Ballito are also being well received by the market. Signature Sibaya has been popular with retirees and young families, as well as investors who are confident that the prime position of this estate will differentiate it from other estates on the market. Another positive factor in Durban’s favour is that Durban ranked seventh in the top ten list of Africa’s wealthiest cities and was identified as one of the most popular holiday destinations for South Africa’s wealthy. Indeed, not only was Durban selected as a firm favourite for holidays, it has also been voted best city in the country from a lifestyle perspective for the past two consecutive years. Zimbali Coastal Resort voted 2nd best security estate in South Africa by New World Wealth
18
Amoils (head researcher for New World Wealth) noted that: “Durban has shown good growth in the last year, particularly in uMhlanga and Ballito. Residential estates in these areas are performing extremely well”. In addition, New World Wealth listed La Lucia, uMhlanga and Ballito as the top three
MENT Wherein lies the truth? suburbs in KZN for second home purchases by the elite. Another uplifting statistic was revealed in the March 2017 Moneyweb report, where it was shown that the South African listed property asset class outperformed both equities and bonds over the past ten years, and furthermore, local property outperformed international property funds over the same period. According to data collected by the Global Property Guide, residential property in South Africa has increased by an average of 76% over the past decade, despite the 2008 recession. Thus, whilst it is easy to get caught up in the negative press and political instability that is pervading the climate at the moment, when one removes the noise, the local property market, particularly in our premium node spanning from Durban to Ballito,
is holding up very well. Indeed, perhaps the prudent choice to make in the current market, would be to look firstly at location, and then consider factors like security and convenience. Risk mitigation is key in times of market instability, and hence, a safe buying decision would be to invest in a seafacing complex or a secure estate along the northern coastal belt of KZN. A great investment product that has recently launched is Coral Point at Sibaya developed by FWJK Developments. This sea-facing apartment block offers units from R1,3 million and is perfectly positioned at the apex of the seafront node of Sibaya. It is important to keep in mind that prime land with sea-views will always be in demand, and given that property ownership in South Africa is uncomplicated for both foreigners and locals alike, this asset class should continue to hold its own.

Craft of Architecture (COA) | T: 021 685 8881 | E: www.coasite.com | Images credited to: Neil Conder / &Beyond www.andbeyond.com/vamizi-island
Craft of Architecture (COA) were appointed onto this project after participating in a limited design competition involving a select panel of African and international firms. 22
The waters surrounding Vamizi Island boast some of the most significant and endangered habitats and wildlife in the western Indian Ocean, with over 180 species of pristine coral and over 400 species of reef fish.
Each villa is individually decorated in its own elegant style with en-suite bedrooms, spectacular dining rooms and peaceful lounging spaces around private pools or the beach.
C
OA were asked to develop detailed architectural proposals for a series of Villa types on the Island. This process began with the partners of COA spending considerable time, over numerous site visits, obtaining an intimate understanding of the unique Island of Vamizi and the specific site features to develop the ‘Vamizi Aesthetic’.
AS
Vamizi Island is set among the Quirimbas Archipelago, in a marine conservation area off the coast of Northern Mozambique. Six individual luxury villas were designed, scattered along the edge of the Island which have all been built according to stringent sustainability practices. These lodges were all creatively designed to blend effortlessly into the idyllic surrounds, using natural island elements in the build, such as local shells and excavated igneous volcanic rock with coral limestone walls and hand carved windows. The project was completely off the grid in the true sense – there was no power, no water – even the roads needed to be constructed. Everything had to be brought to the island, down to the last screw. “We had to think
of everything prior to construction because you couldn’t nip off to Builder’s Warehouse to pick up some extra nails, says Ian Gray, COA Partner. The Villa’s were also the client’s dream holiday houses. Some of the clients had owned the plots for years and had been dreaming of the potential visions. Also the
clients were very committed to the overall vision for the Island and preserving the pristine and protected environment. All of the woodwork and a large part of the villas, were made from local timbers on site, with a large workshop setup for carpenters who created a unique blend of traditional African techniques and high-end European finishes. It was very experimental; carving out various patterns for louvers or screens from sketches sent via the Internet from the European clients or the Cape Town design office. Vamizi architecture aims to reflect the multi-cultural history of Mozambique with its African, Portuguese and Arabic influence playing an integral part in sculpting the architectural elements within the design. The African influence is seen in the detailed timber structures, the woven fabrics, decorative screens and hand carved features, all of which are integrated with solid, natural elements. It is this same lightweight construction that allows the buildings to ‘touch the earth lightly’ to minimize their impact on the environment. The Arabic influence is used to introduce a varied form of courtyard architecture that allows for privacy and enhances passive design principles. This decorative, solid style of architecture is used in moderation to create contrast with the lightweight and floating timber structures and assist in creating an anchoring effect of the structure. 23
Organic luxury with a warm, tropical island feel. An abundance of natural elements including locally sourced wood and textures have been used throughout.
A ‘pavilion’ type methodology was used to avoid existing trees and natural features which will also fragment the scale of the building, as well as assist with natural ventilation. One of the Villa structures (named Tataruga – Portuguese for Turtle) was made entirely from natural sun bleached casuarina trees found on the beaches. Casuarinas were planted by Portuguese sailors so they could see the flat islands when sailing between them. They are in continuous cycle – nothing grows beneath casuarina trees planted close to the beach – therefore beach sand erodes them and they eventually fall over (and get bleached by sea and weather).
“We needed over 50 of these massive trees, which couldn’t be found on Vamizi alone, so we explored neighbouring islands over a one week period. Using GPS, we marked trees we wanted so the construction team could follow behind with a traditional dhow, floating the trees out beyond the reefs on high tide with diving buoyancy jackets and dragging them back to Vamizi at snails pace behind the dhow over the course of a few weeksďż˝, adds Ian.
As there is no air-conditioning, villas are completely open to allow for cross ventilation. This allowed us to experiment with the open design concept without the limitations of having to shut everything down, as we would in other climates.Â
With the many cultural influences affecting the aesthetic, solid passive design principles form the backbone of the buildings, combined with the sustainable materials of the local environment, to create an architecture that is unique to the Vamizi Island. MORE ABOUT CRAFT OF ARCHITECTURE (COA) COA is an award winning architecture company founded in 2006 by partners Ian Gray, John van Wyk and Michal Korycki. Projects undertaken include a portfolio, ranging from master planning and urban design, single and multi-residential, hotels and lodges, commercial and mixed use, interiors and brand architecture, retirement estates, educational and sports facilities, as well as bridges and infrastructure. Projects span many countries and they have offices in both Cape Town and Durban and currently employ over 30 architects and interior designers. They share a belief of craft - filtering down to the last degree - from concept to final product. It is this hands on philosophy that is evident in their work; valuing the creative process above all else places a strong emphasis on a collaborative approach. 24

MODERN RO M A N C E Let us introduce you to blank canvas weddings @ KORU. Ticking all the boxes: pretty venue, fabulous KZN weather, oodles of space and local, experienced suppliers on hand.
T
ucked into a pristine corner of a 6th generation farm, KORU wedding venue with Kim White Weddings, specialize in Blank Canvas weddings - in creating thoughtful, memorable, creative wedding celebrations that appeal to the groom as much as the bride. KORU is a symbolic Maori word meaning Creation or ‘New Beginning’. Its symbol is found in the unfurling frond of a new fern leaf, in a circle unfurling from within itself – opening up the growth, beauty, and celebration of the Journey ahead. The inspiration for the styled shoot featured came from Kim White Weddings and KORU’s partnership of a mutual desire to create an outdoor wedding space that can be customized to truly reflect the bride and groom. "We most certainly drew on the beauty around us here nestled amongst macadamia nut trees with exquisite views of open rolling hills", says Kim White from Kim White Weddings. "We used many locally sourced suppliers in this shoot, from gin tin combies , decadent foods, beautiful lighting to handmade raw wooden tables", she continues. Motivated by the greenery surrounding the venue, the rustic and natural, yet elegant setting, the team set about creating a shoot that was unique, memorable with thoughtful details and would ultimately inspire brides and grooms to choose a 'blank canvas' wedding venue.
Raw, natural and organic - Beautifully styled decor and floral arrangements blended perfectly with the natural surrounds. With an almost festival style feeling, this is truly a celebration of a relaxed and unassuming space.
Vintage modern - Scrumptious food that looks as good as it tastes. Ollive Twist ensured that all bases were covered when it came to the food.
Kim White specializes in weddings for She&He – weddings that appeal to the bride as much as the groom. In thoughtful detail, with professional execution, ensuring your wedding is a bright experience that fills you with joy and gives you the space to enjoy. Kim White has extensive experience planning weddings for couples within South Africa and for couples living overseas, who want to have their wedding in South Africa. If you dream of a wedding in South Africa, but don’t think it’s possible, it is. With no detail left unthought-of. There to capture the experience was Emily and Chris Allan, husband and wife, mom and dad, photographers and adventurers. "We get so excited to be a part of a wedding day, from champagne sipping and nervous smiles at the start, to the jiving and jolling on the dance floor. So many stories to tell and awesome pictures to take", laughs Emily. As a professional photographic team, the couple can shoot a sophisticated soiree, an intimate gathering or even a wild party anywhere in South Africa or abroad. Chris explains "A styled shoot, without any of the pressures of a real wedding day, really gives everyone involved an opportunity to stretch their creative muscles and show off a bit. Everyone plays a part in creating a story that is both romantic and dreamy in a setting that is part blank canvass and part playful muse in sparking ideas for the story. We loved the idea of working with some of the amazing wedding suppliers here on the KZN North Coast and taking the time to create some truly beautiful images". A tough of old school retro - Travelling gin anyone? The Gin Tin made sure that signature thirstquenchers were on hand.
Based at The Litchi Orchard in Salt Rock, Love Laugh specialises in the elegance and joy of flowers, decor and celebrations - turning and transforming

common moments into something special. Suppliers of fresh flowers sourced from flower farms and wholesalers around South Africa, Love Laugh owner, Cindy Rynhoud believes that Flowers bring life to Life. "We hand deliver to office or home, and provide bespoke floral and décor styling for weddings and occasions, no detail is left forgotten" elaborates Cindy. Cindy was super excited when Kim White asked her to be part of the shoot and the launch of this new venue. "Being in the wedding industry, there is always a lot of excitement when something new comes along, and even more exciting when we work with natural elements" says Cindy. "I used lots of greenery (green being the Pantone colour of the year), grey pure linen, slate, wood, and concrete". With a love for white orchids, Cindy decided to include these in the bridal bouquet and table décor. Catering private and corporate functions around KwaZulu Natal for the last 10 years, Olive Twist certainly produces some irresistible combinations. "We've had experiences catering in shebbeens and airport hangers, private homes to world cup soccer events, Mildands weddings to private game lodges, we love to make people happy when they eat our food!", says owner Ros Ivey. Wedding catering is very close to her heart and being involved in the styled shoot gave her carte blanche on creating a selection of modern, tasty wedding fare. "Our aim with wedding catering is to get the brides and grooms to tell us their favourite food and we then make that real and personal", she adds. Josh and Paul Chaplin from Paul's Beach House Furniture produced custom rustic furniture pieces for the shoot. Every piece is unique and handcrafted by a team of local artisans, each with a passion for working with raw, natural products. "Our furniture is generously proportioned, from our famously long dining tables
to our oversized tub chairs", says Paul. The team source old, used, worked timber from construction sites and recycle each piece. Great care is then taken to enhance natural imperfections by using paint techniques, and give it new life. As a premium partner of the worlds leading decorative lighting company - MK Illumination - the European based market leaders, Flickers & Dreams benefits from the very latest trends in event lighting. Owner Ryllie Rasmussen says "We use light to create emotion and atmosphere. From high quality LED fairy lights in various shapes and forms to large Showstopper Sculptures of light festooned with thousands of LEDs - we can add magic to your day". For the styled shoot, Flickers & Dreams illuminated one of the trees growing near the lake and added retro bulbs hanging at different
heights above the pergola where the bride and groom say their vows. Organic Balls were also hung which have a great day effect and a lovely textured look, they come with lights inside too, so begin to glow as the sun sets. The Gin Tin, owned and run by Guy Allen, is a vintage treasure that traverses the country side spreading gin and joy to all she encounters. "We were fortunate enough to be involved in the shoot and what a privilege it was. Beautiful setting, beautiful pictures, beautiful drinks. Some would say a perfect day out!" says Guy. Whether it is a small intimate gathering or a vip laden soiree The Gin Tin can and will make the experience one you will never forget. Don’t leave a vir…gin. So, if you are looking for a little modern romance, and the ability to put your own spin on your very special day, look no further...

WAT E R S EDGE Images Chris Allan Photography | Location Sheffield Beach, KZN North Coast
Elevated above Sheffield Beach, on the North Coast of KwaZulu Natal, lies a unique holiday home which celebrates its shore-front setting.
T
his modern, elegantly finished, free standing holiday home rests upon a large, double plot. With incredible sea-views from five of its bedrooms and its garden running straight onto the shore, the beach remains a welcome temptation!
Designed with spacious, open-plan living in mind, the ground-floor combines its state of the art kitchen and sculleries with a comfortable lounge which spills out through its fold-away, sliding doors onto a welcoming, wooden deck complete with a rim-flow swimming-pool. Its outdoor braai area, complete with built-in gas-braai, gives guests the perfect excuse to be comfortable outside - where there are soft furnishings on the spacious deck. Clothed in a palette of natural colours and textures, carefully designed to mimic the warmth and serenity of its coastal surroundings, the ground-floor incorporates only the most desirable elements of the outdoors into its appearance. With its raw, offshutter, concrete ceiling towering above a polished, concrete floor which, in turn, rests beneath a variety of wooden furniture and custom built-in fixtures, the ground-floor delivers a luxurious atmosphere of openness and practicality. Using an array of organic textures and colours inspired by seashells, weathered driftwood and beach sand, the beach itself has been subtly brought into each of the bedrooms. 41
The kitchen, outfitted with all conceivable mod cons, sleek white cabinetry, Caeserstone tops and rustic wooden finishes, provides an ideal space for culinary exploration. A large island runs through its centre and holds a stylish gas cook-top complete with spaces for stools. A floating staircase connects the three upstairs bedrooms to the groundfloor. Five of the seven bedrooms are also equipped with modern, en-suite bathrooms all of which evoke a sense of privacy and comfort. There are
two separate bathrooms and a guest toilet. The bedrooms are decorated in crisp white with pops of colour in the scatter cushions and throws. This home was brought to life by the stylish, relaxed touch of Kari McDonagh Interiors. "We had challenges due to the large spaces, but we managed to create a calm, contemporary feel for friends and family to enjoy', says Kari. "Styled with warm and inviting decor that's comfortable and invites you to put your feet up and relax", she continues.
Relaxed, coastal contemporary. With the beach being the main attraction, this home perfectly complements its surroundings.
42
The brief in respect of the decor was guided by subtle, practical elegance. This led Kari and her team to adopt a less-is-more approach, sparingly using simple yet meaningful features. This approach echoes in features such as the charcoal jute rugs, Malawi chairs and simply-decorated cushions which have been strategically scattered throughout the home. Richly textured wall paper adds a partially wooden appearance to the lounge area, ensuring that its large size does not detract from the
warmth of its decor. "I think its been a great mix of Modern yet relaxed family decor", says Kari. The end result is a picturesque fusion of coastal tranquility and modern functionality. Holiday rentals of this home are currently being marketed by Luxury Coastal Escapes. For more information and booking enquiries, contact: bookings@luxurycoastalescapes.com

At the ITI, the International Trend Institute, we identify consumer trends by tracking shifts in the way people understand their relationship with the world around them. We believe trends are about more than just what you wear, or watch or buy, but more about what these things say about what you value. And one of the major shifts we’re seeing at the moment is the way that cities are increasingly becoming more important to people than countries when it comes to defining their identity. 44

n our latest Trend Review, which looks at the big picture social trends at play in the world, we focus in on the emergence of urban identities under the “Citizen” theme. We are officially an urban species now, with over half of human beings living in a city, and this has significant impact on they way that we understand ourselves. For the past few decades, suburban living was idealised. You’d officially made it if you could afford a big house with a big garden and a big garage to park your car in. Now, however, this may still be the norm for many, and in fact how they grew up, but that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily desirable. What we’re seeing in terms of generational trends goes some way to explain this. The so-called “millennial” generation tends to be less likely to be able to afford to buy property and tends to rent or share for longer. There is also an increased value placed on experiences over things by this generation. So they’d rather stay somewhere that offers them access to culture, food and potential for socialistion than invest in property as an asset. We also tend to react against the ideals of our parents’ generation. So if they valued the stability, space and security of the suburbs, defining your identity as a young urban dweller
|

helps people to assert themselves as individuals in their own right. In South Africa this is all particularly interesting because of our fraught relationship with cities. Urban planning was used to divide people and keep population groups out of sight. Added to this, many of our urban centres have seen a massive exodus of affluent individuals and businesses in favour of the suburbs, making the CBD somewhere that makes many rather anxious. But with initiatives such as the Maboneng precinct in Johannesburg and Rivertown in Durban, we’re seeing projects to make the city cool and desirable again. And even in the new, large-scale developments in KwaZuluNatal by Tongaat Hulett Developments, the focus is on creating precincts with urban hubs. Their projects like Sibaya and Cornubia have all been conceived of as much more than just residential estates. The gated community is no longer necessarily the ideal. But to understand this focus on cities, we need a quick history lesson. For centuries, your identity was defined by the immediate area you lived in. All cultures started out in tribes, where location
and family were very tightly connected. Tribes settled down with the advent of agriculture and these tribal centres ultimately became cities of various scales. And for a long time that was it. In Europe particularly, city states flourished before various waves of colonialism consolidated power in the hands of a few countries. Even then, global borders were fairly porous until the outbreak of World War I, when they were closed and the passport came into common usage to prove one’s identity and nationality. The point here being that the idea of the nation state, as something relevant to the individual is fairly new, relatively speaking. We have existed as tribes and city-dwellers for much longer than citizens of a country. We’re not doing anything new now, we’re simply going back to that past.
Part of the reason people value their city more than their country is because of the values that can be associated with it. Cities, on the whole, tend to be more liberal and diverse than outlying areas. They’re where different people come together, where creativity tends to happen. And these values are what matter to the younger generations. They’ve grown up in a world where diversity is the norm – they’re connected to communities around the globe, thanks to the Internet so living in a human monoculture as an adult is far from desirable. That’s why we’ve seen cities becoming key liberal resistance points even if society as a whole seems to on the path to increasing conservatism. The majority of urban areas voted Democrat in the Clinton-Trump election and London immediately followed the Brexit vote with an “Open for Business” campaign. In the world of brands, we’re seeing this focus on cities playing out in a number of ways. Luxury retailers tend to play into it with city specific product ranges. Kanye West, for example, held pop up shops around the world last year selling his Pablo merchandise, and each pop up was branded by city (including Cape Town in South Africa). Travel brands like AirBnB tap into this mindset with their new Experiences and Trips offering too. Rather than just selling you the place to stay, they want to help travellers experience new cities like a local. No-one wants to be a tourist anymore. We’re even seeing fashion brands turning your neighbourhood allegiance into the clothing you wear. The Coded Couture project by Ivy Revel and Google collects data about where you go in your city and then turns the maps into a design element on a custom dress designed based on your information. So going forward, I think we’re going to see these city allegiances become even more important. Locally there are already such clearly defined characters for each of our major cities (and even some rivalries too), and I think it’s important for people to capitalise on this when creating products and services. I think for us, however, we need to renegotiate our relationship with the urban as a part of this. It’s a chance to relook at the way our cities work and ensure that this new wave of urbanism is inclusive and democratic. “No more importing of event ideas. Our long-term goal is to be South Africa's cultural must-see event. The Brazlians have their Rio Carnival, the Spanish have their tomato throwing festival, we have our Shisanyama Festival, said Michelle Lewis, event organizer. To help you digest the delicious dishes, you’ll be able to dance to some of the hottest names in music right now. “What’s shisanyama without great music. We’re looking forward to celebrating our culture, said TJ Zama, owner of Eyadini Lounge and partner in the Shisanyama Festival. Acting DCM, Head of Durban Tourism, Mr Phillip Sithole confidently stated that the city has heavily invested in growing township tourism and exposing key tourism products to new markets. Initiatives such as the Shisanyama Festival have yielded positive results for our emerging establishments and has now become must visit attractions with positive economic spin-offs. “We look forward to the 2017 edition at one of our flagship township restaurants, Eyadini. We invite all our visitors and residents of Durban to attend and be part of this Festival that is primarily aimed at giving visitors an insight into the cuisine and culture of our unique and vibrant township lifestyle, ended Sithole.

here is no doubt that this has been an exceptional period for gated estate developments within KwaZulu-Natal, with specific reference to Umhlanga and further North. This is emphasised by the fact that, in the last 12-months, from Umhlanga to Salt Rock R2.1 Billion in transfers were done within gated estates. What is more significant is that this excludes the multitude of new development opportunities that have launched, but not yet transferred. This category includes the likes of Pearl Sky, Oceans Umhlanga, Umhlanga Arch and The Sibaya Precinct with developments such as Ocean Dune, Signature Sibaya and Pebble Beach. There are also the additional sales that have occurred within the new gated estates North of Ballito. The cumulative sales value of these projects, that haven't yet transferred, would exceed R3,5 Billion. This means that when one combines those that have transferred and those that haven’t, the total figure would exceed R5,8 billion for the last 12-months which is absolutely staggering for a relatively small geographic area. Had this all happened over extended periods then it
48
may be easier to comprehend, but we have seen a consistent rollout of developments with values of close to R1 Billion, literally launching and selling-out overnight. Whilst new developments continue to be planned, and construction reaches a frenzy, the big question that most people will be asking is whether such demand within KwaZulu-Natal is sustainable and whether the massive rate of sales can continue. Private Property recently featured an article on the 10 most expensive areas in South Africa. Three of these are situated within KwazuluNatal and within less than 40kms of each other, namely; Umhlanga, Umdloti and Ballito. The significance of this is that, outside of Cape Town (Atlantic Seaboard, City Bowl and Southern Suburbs), the area from Umhlanga to Ballito is the most valuable stretch of property in the country. It has also not just been inflated based on a surge of speculative investment, but the fundamentals are far more solid, and sustainable, in the sense that the demand is being stimulated by more people moving into the area and a healthy combination of strong demand and good product.
Some of the key reasons behind this statement are that firstly, Gauteng buyers are snapping-up property in KwaZulu-Natal. Currently this market makes up approximately 15% of buyers within new development, but I predict this may grow up to 30% within the next five years. These are couples or families who are relocating for holistic lifestyle, value-for-money, security or retirement. Secondly, nobody could argue that KwaZulu-Natal has some of the best developments in the country. We are blessed with some of the best developments in the country which often blend our great coastline, with climate, proximity to the airport, safety, affordability, indigenous forest and a great blend of nearby attractions. This is combined with the fact that new land within precincts such as Sibaya and Umhlanga Ridgeside continue to be unlocked, along with new developments from Salt Rock through to Tinley Manor. When one compares the appeal of these areas, to anywhere else in the country, it’s not hard to see why this will attract investors from all areas of KwaZulu-Natal, the rest of SA, as well as internationally. Notably, people are moving North. Much of the demand is being stimulated by over 30 families a month moving into Umhlanga and the North Coast from affluent areas such as Durban North, Morningside and Berea, as well as Westville. This combined with the additional buyers from Gauteng makes for a significant level of new investment into the area. The KwaZulu-Natal market understands investment. Durban, in particular, is blessed with a very strong culture of investors who understand the benefits of property investment and the substantial benefits that can be gained from getting in early and buying property off-plan. Investors have the added benefit of tools such as Airbnb which can substantially improve rental yields based on KwaZulu-Natal’s attraction as a holistic holiday destination. In due course, KwaZulu-Natal is going to become SA’s retirement capital. People from around the country are catching onto the benefits of KwaZuluNatal from a retirement lifestyle perspective. This will continue to attract investment from outside of KwaZulu-Natal. Whilst many, from areas such as Gauteng, will choose from the great selection of new retirement developments that have come on-line of late, some will still choose to relocate to one of the existing lifestyle estates on the North Coast, and opt to hold-out for healthcare. Very few can accurately predict what the economy is going to do in the foreseeable future. What we can be certain of is that the area north of Durban will continue to be the best performing residential node in the country.
It would be naive to comment on an area outlook without taking into account the potential of interest rate hikes during the course of 2017. This certainly has the potential to be a ‘party-pooper’ but the reality is that even in challenging economic conditions, a good product will continue to be desirable especially when factors such as security and the demand for gated environments, applies.
There is absolutely no doubt that the results will continue to be there, buyers, who get in early, will continue to see growth and KwaZulu-Natal will remain one of the most desirable property investment locations in the country. The pipeline is very strong and the one certainty is that more, carefully planned estates will be coming onto the market which will serve to further enhance the appeal and attract investment from outside of the immediate vicinity.

North of Durban, Blythedale Beach is one of those unspoilt havens of white sand and beautiful, warm sea that resides amongst the subtropical vegetation so prominent in the area. What makes Blythedale Beach even more attractive, particularly to nature lovers, is the fact that Blythedale Beach adjoins a small conservancy that includes the Umvoti River mouth - a haven for winged creatures and a must for bird lovers, definitely worth a visit. Just a few kilometres further up the coast brings one to Zinkwazi where a peaceful lagoon offers a wonderful spot for picnics, and fish eagles scoop down on to the waters in mid flight. There are wonderful walks, indigenous forest, fishing and a spectacular birdlife here, apart from the endless beaches - a real escape from it all. The beaches along this area of coast are really kilometres of sand that send out an invitation for long walks, and the seas can be a hive of water activity for swimmers and surfers alike. STEM EDUCATION @
CRAWFORD NORTH COAST
As society starts to experience the impact of the 4th industrial revolution, our schools need to ensure that their approach to education remains relevant and applicable, that the pedagogy prepares children to meet the demands of a world which is increasingly becoming volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. ducation is not just about acquiring content, but how successfully our children are able to manipulate information, to problem solve, but most of all to work collaboratively. For these reasons engaging in subjects which are categorized as "STEM" ( Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is imperative. STEM subjects are ‘hands-on’ and ‘minds-on’; and can provide students with exciting practical experiences and real life problem solving activities and tasks.
nature in the playground provide hands on opportunities through first-hand investigative experiences.
Children are naturally curious about the world around them. At Crawford Pre-Primary North Coast, children not only engage in planned science activities, but are also exposed to unplanned opportunities of discovery on the playground and in the classroom. Teacher-guided explorations are interesting and challenging. Unplanned activities occur on a daily basis when a child sees something of interest and wonders about it. Experimenting at the water trough, constructing in the sandpit, planting and harvesting in the vegetable garden and observing
By sharing their observations and ideas with their peers, children are encouraged to collaborate and build theories, test their theories and evaluate their findings, thus fostering curiosity and stimulating new ideas.
The teacher, at this level, plays a crucial role in the child’s learning. She is the guide and facilitator to the children’s investigations. After giving the children time to engage with and experience materials provided, she encourages them to explore and question, guiding them with questions which further develop more focused and deeper explorations and learning.
Scientific inquiry provides the opportunity for the children to develop a variety of important skills and by creating unforgettable, fun, learning experiences that engage children and promote wonder and exploration. Teachers inspire a love of learning and develop deeper thinking.

In addition to developing skills and providing developmental opportunities in science, it is equally important for a child to develop technological skills as it is estimated that over the next 10 years there will be 1.4 million jobs in the fields of computer sciences and only around 400,000 graduates qualified with the required skills. Many other career fields, not directly linked to computer sciences will also be affected by the need for at least a basic understanding of programming and coding. Code powers the digital world, with every website, smartphone application, computer programme, calculator and even microwave relying on a code to operate. Coders are considered the architects and constructors of the digital age. For this reason coding platforms are explored as early as the preparatory level and then further developed at college. Coding helps strengthen computational thinking, which although essential to the development of computer applications, can also be used to support problem-solving across all academic disciplines, not only in Mathematics and Science, but also the Humanities. Learning becomes real when relationships between subjects and life outside of the classroom are experienced and explored. (Google for Education). Pedagogy is supported by technology and a specialist subject, Google Tutorials, has been introduced. Here students work through various Google applications including Google Sphere and Virtual Walk.
There are no seven wonders of the world in the eyes of a child. There are seven million.” Walt Streightiff A focus of technology brings the need for special learning spaces. Such a space is the new dynamic TEC2H, (thinking, exploring, creating, collaborating) hub recently installed at Crawford College North Coast. The space is equipped with iPad Air 2 devices and a wall-to-wall screen. Learning in this dynamic space is aimed at students not just accessing knowledge and content, but becoming creators of content and producers of knowledge, a philosophy that underlies pedagogy from Pre-Primary to College. The infrastructure further allows for the seamless incorporation of ICT in the classroom across all phases. The entire campus is WIFI enabled, classrooms are technologically well equipped and staff have been trained to use various Google Apps, including Google Classroom confidently, to enhance teaching and learning.

COLOUR CONCEPT During this planned science activity, children explored the concept of colouring mixing. The teacher provided coloured ice blocks with bicarbonate of soda mixed in. Paired children were given 2 different coloured ice blocks. They were then asked how they could get the colours to mix. The children realised that they would have to get the ice to become a liquid before the colours would mix. Given droppers with vinegar, the children then watched the reaction as the vinegar was dropped onto the coloured ice blocks. Once the colours had merged, the children recorded their findings and reported back to the rest of the class.
also occurs through the dynamic use of Google Docs and hyper Docs. This feature allows for a richer learning experience as students can work collaboratively and can be directed to videos, links, articles and Google Map locations. Google Classroom becomes invaluable when students are absent from school and for revision in preparation for tests and examinations. Entrepreneurial thinking is also imperative to survive in the future. By offering subjects such as Engineering Graphics and Design, students are challenged to be creative within the structured engineering realm and to problem solve abstractly. Another important feature of Crawford North Coast pedagogy is that of extension beyond the
PRE-PRIMARY During outdoor free play, the children found an old tree stump in the garden and spent time investigating to find out what was eating it. A nest of termites was discovered, which led to an interesting discussion. Once back in the classroom, they researched by Googling and downloading relevant pictures and information on the SmartBoard.
classroom. One of the many examples of such extension is the participation of students in the 13th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad for Primary Schools (IMSO) in Tangerang, Indonesia in 2016. This annual Olympiad provided an opportunity to measure skills and aptitude for Science and Mathematics against students from twenty two countries in the world. Children participating develop skills across a vast spectrum, not only academic skills but also build qualities such as resilience and grit. Max Whitfield, Rai Rugbeer and Sunggoo Kang, were selected from a large group of students to represent South Africa. Both Rai and Max did extremely well in the Science category, while
Sunggoo shone in Mathematics. Unfortunately, Sunggoo could not travel with the group, as he and his family relocated to South Korea. Once in Indonesia, the team was exposed to intense media attention, often having to give impromptu interviews and promoting themselves, South Africa, Indonesia and IMSO. They were exposed to different cultures and unusual food. Their hard work after intense preparation and effort were acknowledged by both boys receiving bronze medals at the final Award Ceremony. By affording children to play to their strengths within the "STEM realm" opportunities to think divergently and to reflect on successes, or at times failures, provide a wealth of experiences and fosters a positive growth mindset - a much needed attribute to manage constant change in the future.

wonder if someone could be described as being a ‘Low-key Tonic for the Soul’? Sounds contradictory I know, but that’s exactly what it’s like chatting to abstract sculptor extraordinaire, Brendon Edwards. His deep, gravelly voice is filled with wry wit and ruthless honesty and yet, one is left smiling and feeling strangely satisfied after a conversation with him. This is someone who would see straight through a pretentious remark or person for that matter. His answers fall from his mouth in a refreshing and unedited manner – what a delight! And I bet if I asked how much he thought I weighed – he would probably answer with brutal accuracy...including the decimal point – he’s good with figures like that dammit. It’s by his pauses and what he doesn’t say that he communicates what he means. His efficiency of words to me reflects his sculpture: elegant, perceptive and downright powerful. Brendon is a Zimbabwean born and bred and very much at heart too. At the age of 14, he left his beautiful country to settle in South Africa. He completed his schooling at Michael House in the Midlands. He admits he loved art at school and went on to study Philosophy and Development Studies at the University of the Free State. Presently he, his life partner Kerry and their children reside in Simbithi Eco Estate on the North Coast. Brendon works at his studio in Kloof and has recently bought a plot in Nottingham Road where they plan to ultimately live and work. In a conversation filled with equal doses of laughter (from my side predominantly) and fascinating insights into why he does what he does, we get to glean a little of what makes this sculptor tick. There are a great deal of circles and spirals in your work Brendon – tell us more about what inspires you. Well, circles and the round shape are something that we all can relate to. Just think about it, the first thing you ever see in the world is through ‘rounds’...your eyes. Circles are perfection – well certainly in Pythagoras’s eyes! There is the Earth and Moon and perfectly round organic shapes everywhere – on the inside and the outside of us. My interest and studies in quantum physics (quarks...the binding force of atoms etc.) all relate directly to my work. Taking a picture of how atoms move would probably best explain my work. I endeavour to make the invisible...well visible. A circle is way more than just a shape Barbie! A circle represents infinity, being complete and whole. And of course, the circle is in the symbols for both male and female. Circles include exquisite geometry, maths and lyricism. Speaking of which, music also has a profound influence on my work – again it has circles and lightness and logic and maths. One of my more recent works is entitled “Out of Time” and was inspired by the music of Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen. Cohen said “there is a crack in everything and that’s how the light gets in” and before him Hemingway said “we are all broken and that’s how the light gets in” I believe, like Wabi, that there is something beautiful that time does to us, our buildings, and all our imperfections if we surrender ourselves to time. We need to celebrate the imperfection, fragility and transience of our lives. Tell us about how you go about getting your work made. Well, once I have the concept I do a great deal of sketching. I then sketch the final piece out on the floor of the engineer’s workshop.
56
Gareth from Brockett Rolling in Pinetown has a creative edge to him which has crept out under duress (he laughs). The piece is then cut, bent and assembled. I work in steel and copper which I love, as they are hard and heavy materials yet through the art become light, hopeful and I would like to say even ‘happy’...contrary to their natural state. I like that. The pieces are once off pieces – there is no way on earth you would ever get two exactly the same quite frankly. You work ranges from relatively small to huge pieces – which do you prefer? My natural tendency is to work on a massive scale. But having said that, I have recently been making smaller works and have been really getting into that and loving it. The smaller works are also just so much more accessible to clients – both financially and space wise. Do you take on Commissions? Yes. Generally I am shown a space and I then come up with a concept that I think would best fit into the area holistically. I reckon I’m able to interpret a brief well, but being an artist, one obviously has to have the freedom to create. So my flaw would be that I don’t take complaints too well (laughs). You either love me or hate me...and I you. (Oh, I don’t think put that bit in Barbie – I may never get another commission again!) What would you say have been the highlights in your life? I guess being chosen to play for the Natal Rugby Team was a big one. I played full back and wing. A key highlight for me regarding my art was getting my work into major galleries in South Africa. Being with the Everard Read Gallery has been really good for my name in the art world. And I have pieces going to other countries – two leaving for London soon. That’s pretty cool. What do you like about being an Artist? Well, to me freedom is the most important thing and being an artist, one has that kind of freedom. I can really do what I want to do, when I want to – it doesn’t get much better than that does it?
A RT SCENE
Do you own any art in your home? And do you buy or barter?! Absolutely. We have a beautiful Walter Battiss entitled “Lover of Trees’ – I bought that. We also have some Angela Buckland photography – bartered that. Being Zimbabwean, I have some beautiful Zim pieces too. What did you want to be when you were small? Oh that’s easy. A fireman. Actually, I would still love to be a fireman. I often tell Kerry that if we ever had to leave this country, I would have to get really fit again and sign up for the fire squad in Australia. That would be so cool if they would have me. Or I thought I would make a pretty good petrol attendant too. But I think I’m stuck with being an Artist – don’t really have a choice – it’s just what I do!
What do you do when you’re not sculpting? I look after our six kids, they are aged between 8 and 18 so it’s pretty hectic! I’ve also got into cooking over the last year or so. What would you cook for friends? Pork belly...or a damn fine oxtail...with a healthy dose of red wine. What makes you laugh? I have a dark sense of humour...filled with sarcasm. I do love to see someone fall down a flight of stairs say...not hurting themselves or anything – I just have an uncontrollable urge to laugh (no, don’t put that in either!) (Note to self: wear flat, grippable shoes on a visit to Brendon’s studio, take the lift not the stairs, a bottle of red vino and demand a damn fine oxtail stew on arrival).
The same laws that govern musical phenomena are to be found in the world & universe, cosmic harmony bound by a single rule that is at once mathematical and aesthetic. This rule is manifested in the music of spheres.” Pythagoras

AMC HUNTER INC
Having recently celebrated the Company's 30th birthday, we chatted to the group of woman who make up this formidable team of attorneys.
A
pproachable. Not a word usually associated with attorneys, but very much applicable in this firm which is recognised as one of the leading property firms in KwaZulu Natal. Headed up by Karien Hunter who, with 30 years' experience in the legal profession under her belt, is well equipped and committed to passing said knowledge onto her staff and two partners, Sarikha Singh and Monique Gresse. Founded in 1987 by Karien, AMC Hunter Inc. are property law specialists focusing on transfers, property related disputes and conveyancing. The firm also does development work from affordable housing to luxurious estates. AMC Hunter Inc. was recognised by ABSA Bank as their top performing firm of conveyancers for KZN in 2016. AMC Hunter Inc. has offices in Ballito, Durban and Amanzimtoti. "We have built a quality firm and it is important for us to form close, lasting relationships with our clients", says Karien. "Particularly with estate agents, where we assist with keeping the sale together by ensuring that any outstanding issues are resolved to make the sale happen", she continues. Karien has received many accolades over the years: Business Woman of the Year 2007 (KZN) and a WPN (Women Property Network) finalist in South Africa in 2008. Karien lives in Ballito with her husband Stephen. She is passionate about art and is a keen golfer. She regularly plays a four-ball with her husband and three sons. Monique Gresse, the most recent addition to the firm, graduated from Stellenbosch University and she has spent most of her time during her two years of articles doing litigation work. She says that her litigation background helps her to assist clients to settle disputes instead of going to court which is time consuming

and costly. Monique attends to the firm’s dispute resolution and provides clients and estate agents with advice and legal opinions. She also assists in the conveyancing department. With fond memories of growing up in Empangeni, Monique quotes her grandfather, who was a Magistrate, and her mom who taught her from a young age to believe in herself, as her inspiration to study law. Recently married and now settled in Sheffield Beach, Monique is an avid surfer and nature lover. With a passion for the law and people, Monique has truly found her niche in life. Sarikha Singh, who heads up the Durban branch, has established herself as a top performing conveyancer within KwaZulu Natal and has an in-depth understanding of the needs of the financial institutions the firm works with. When I asked Sarikha why she chose law, she quipped "I guess watching Law and Order started the idea". A born and bred Durbanite, Sarikha is a University of Durban Westville Graduate (LLB), an admitted attorney, conveyancer and notary public. "My inspiration always came from my mother and father. Despite all hardships faced, they still reached their goals. They believe that hard work pays off and nothing comes to you for free", says Sarika. With 3 beautiful girls aged between 4 months and 8 years old, Sarikha is understandably focussed on her family, but will attempt and complete her MBA in the near future. "I have learnt a lot from Karien over the past 2 years. Her ability to turn a difficult situation into a more favourable one is impressive. She is a professional, yet compassionate person. The one thing that strikes me most about her, is her appreciation for her staff and her understanding toward them. She never fails to give credit where it is due", ends Sarikha.

The property system in South Africa works well, and is very well regulated. Our Deeds Office is up to date and well run - actually one of the best property registrations in the world. This is often taken for granted, and South Africans should appreciate this fact more.” 58
TANTALISING
ESSENTIAL OILS FOR TODDLERS, TEENS & TANNIES
TA NG E R I N E Tangerine essential oil is ideal for toddlers, especially if you are looking for a natural way to calm the mind and relieve the symptoms of anxiety and stress. Sometimes when my children were toddlers they would complain of tummy aches. Often it was after a stressful event, so tangerine would help settle tummies and worries. It can be safely used on children, as Tangerine has high levels of d-limonene, which have been shown to be the least reactive of the essential oils. Along with the calming and sedative properties of Tangerine essential oil, it also has an overall benefit to the immune system, skin, and emotions, as well as a digestive aid. Drop 2-3 drops of tangerine essential oil to your toddlers’ bath water, morning or night.
TEA TREE Tea tree is ideal for teenagers, who often have oilier skins, with associated pimples and blackheads. This oiliness and redness often flares up with hormones. Sometimes our teenager thinks of herself as the next surfing champion, spending many hours in the sun, which can sometimes lead to white patchy skin, often associated with fungal growth. As Tea-Tree has so many anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties it makes it ideal for our teens. These benefits have been known to the Australians, where Tea-tree originates from, for many years. Now, you too can use the healing powers of tea tree oil. One easy way for your teen to use tea-tree is to add just one drop to the water when washing the skin or at night (only) use a little on a cotton swab, and dab directly onto swollen, red, inflamed skin.
NOTE Like most citrus essential oils, tangerine oil is photo-toxic and you
should not expose your skin to direct sunlight for at least 48 hours after applying it to your skin. Citrus essential oils contain compounds that react to UV ray exposure and might lead to inflammation, blistering or burned skin. Always dilute essential oil with a suitable carrier oil before applying to the skin. Always do a patch test on an area of skin to ensure that you do not have a reaction. Pregnant women should always consult their health professional before using essential oils. Pregnant women should steer clear of thyme oil because it can stimulate menstrual flow.
THYME Essential oil is derived from thyme, also known as Thymus vulgaris. Thyme is a herbal member of the mint family, the same family that brings you essential oils of lavender, rosemary and peppermint. Thyme oil is best used to help infections that have been plaguing you for a long time. Ongoing low grade infection that you have treated time and time again with antibiotics, how about using thyme? Simply mix 5mls of base oil, like grape-seed or sweet almond, with 5 drops of thyme. Use a total of 1 ml behind your knees, along your groin, and on the inner elbow, every morning and every night, for 30 days. Mixing just 5mls keeps the mixture fresh and the healing anti-viral/ant-bacterial/anti-fungal qualities fresh. Thyme oil is also excellent at stimulating the mind, strengthening memory and concentration and calming the nerves.

DUE NORTH It was in the late 1980’s that one of Southern Africa’s most respected agricultural and agriprocessing businesses, Tongaat Hulett, launched Tongaat Hulett Developments (then Moreland).
T
his was in response to the growing demand for new housing, commercial, industrial and other urban uses along the corridors to the north of the Durban city centre. The company’s ability to facilitate the development of new urban environments has completely transformed the areas that we now know as Gateway, The Ridge, Umhlanga Rocks Drive, Mt Edgecombe, Zimbali and Cornubia. As land stewards within the 65km stretch between uMhlanga Rocks, Ballito and through to the Thukela River, the opportunities are vast. The uninterrupted stretch of beach and sea, flanked by an abundance of teaming coastal forest and undulating agricultural land quite comfortably qualifies as one of Africa’s most richly endowed natural and economic assets. Yet, to better understand what the vision is, we first need to take a look at who these visionaries are. Tongaat Hulett Developments’ key purpose is to drive inclusive economic activity and growth
60
through responsible and considered land transformation. The result of these endeavours is evident in the successes of residential examples such as Mount Edgecombe, Zimbali and Izinga to name but a few. Stand-out industrial, commercial and mixed use place-making endeavours are evident in the development of Riverhorse Valley Industrial and Business Estate, the uMhlanga Ridge and more recently, Bridge City, Cornubia and Sibaya Coastal Precinct. Michael Deighton, Managing Director of Tongaat Hulett Developments, says the company is achieving their success through, “Working off a base of decades of careful planning, an incredible locational endowment and valuable partnerships with local communities, authorities and players in the industry to facilitate a vision that responds to the region’s commercial, residential and social needs.” The company’s unwavering vision of facilitating sustainable and integrated mixeduse development has grown beyond its most ambitious early aspirations. Underpinned by an ethos of value creation, Deighton, together with a 65 strong professional team, explains the concept further, “When we speak about creating value, we refer to leaving a lasting legacy that remains long after the development cycle. We strive to make a positive and enduring impact across all platforms from planning, to construction, to community upliftment and environmental improvement.”

Where Tongaat Hulett differs from what we typically understand as ‘property developers’, the company has chosen not to erect or own buildings. Rather they are what could be termed as ‘greenfield developers’ –people who plan and prepare land to enable top-structure development to take place. For the sake of clarity, Deighton says, “We deal with large precincts of land that are well located and timed for development as the urban area expands. We create a development concept off a blank canvas, within the provisions of the prevailing municipal and provincial spatial plans, and, together with government and the private sector, work to develop the plans and the infrastructure to support the investment and growth of sustainable neighbourhoods that suit their unique contexts.” Put into this perspective, one can appreciate the expansive picture at play. He explains further, “We have an enormous responsibility to facilitate the creation of beautiful, functional, sustainable, inclusive and future-forward spaces - places of significance that respond to and resonate with the people who will occupy, own and use these environments.” According to Deighton, “We are seeing an influx of people from the rural areas into the city and how we respond to this changing dynamic is absolutely fundamental.” This is why Tongaat Hulett takes a wholly ‘people-centric’ approach. “Ultimately, people are the custodians of these
built environments and we are extremely privileged to be involved in influencing a new way of urban living,” he adds. Over the years, the company has earned a reputation of impeccable standing, through a collaborative and insightful business model. While the preparatory process can take years, the thorough and extensive intellectual investment made throughout the process translates into unique, purpose developed environments that are based on global best practice. Deighton uses the success of the growing Cornubia precinct as an example of successful collaboration with government and communities to deliver a new piece of the city that is achieving a new standard in urban transformation and spatial integration. In places such as this, Tongaat Hulett is making a significant difference by basing their spatial planning on what is termed ‘new urbanism’ – a model of sustainable social integration and development that focusses on compact, integrated nodes where people, as opposed to private carbased transport, are at the very core. This means priority is given to walking, cycling and public transport systems. The GO!Durban Integrated, Rapid, Public Transport Network being rolledout by the eThekwini Municipality in Durban and linking into Bridge City, uMhlanga Ridge, Cornubia and further north to the airport and ultimately Ballito, is of major significance in terms of providing more people with access to affordable, reliable and safe transport – a fundamental construct underpinning the notion of new urbanism. The company remains close to its development partners, adding value both during and after the construction process. Deighton says this assists in continued asset growth and, “Translates into maintaining the momentum we have created to ensure the maximum benefit and full value is created through the land conversion.” The introduction of precinct Design Review Panels in new precincts such as the uMhlanga Ridge and Sibaya Coastal Precinct for example, means that
The iconic Millennium Bridge on uMhlanga Ridge sets a benchmark in urban planning by connecting people to their living, working and social environments. It is a vivid reminder of the pivotal role this area as a whole has played, as a catalyst for growth and development on the North Coast. carefully selected independent professionals are able to support developers in maintaining a sense of architectural integrity and spatial planning that falls in line with the development vision. Management Associations, such as the Ridge Management Association operating in uMhlanga Ridge, are another example of where the company plays an important role in seeing that a lasting legacy is created. The establishment of these associations, 25 of which the company has established for various communities, has set the benchmark for urban precinct management. With collaboration central to the company’s approach, Tongaat Hulett are not about taking all of the credit for creating this new urban footprint we speak of. “It is through a shared vision that an enduring impact is being and will continue to be realised,” says Deighton who confirms that together with their partners, Tongaat Hulett has facilitated investment of more than R70 billion into the region through its land conversion activities across an array of market sectors over two decades. The revenue generated for municipalities, together with the value created for the region in terms of economic, residential and tourism value is staggering.
Over the next 15 – 20 year period, Deighton expects that the North Coast is going to see an acceleration in property development and investment in response to the growing demand and undeniable potential, “The landscape between the Ohlanga and uMdloti River estuaries is undergoing a similar but even more significant transformation than that we’ve seen north of the Umgeni, with the development of the Sibaya Coastal Precinct.” After a number of years, the Precinct is making substantial progress with development underway in Nodes One and Five out of a total seven. This, according to Deighton, “Is the first of a number of exciting developments that are currently in the planning phase.” The Durban Aerotropolis, anchored by the Dube TradePort, now has a complete Master Plan and Implementation Plan that is being driven by the Provincial Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs. This, amongst a host of mixed-use plans that the company has in the pipeline, will be the next big catalyst for the region as development continues to attract investment, visitors and residents into South Africa’s warmest and most welcoming city.

veryone in South Africa benefits from property rights. The right to property creates ownership. Ownership allows things to be valued and exchanged. Property includes immovable property (land and homes), movable goods, the product of physical or mental effort (money) and one’s own body.
If land, homes and goods are not owned there is nothing to exchange and consequently no commerce. If the product of effort is not owned there is no point in working. If our bodies are not owned there is no legal basis for physical crimes. Property rights are all intertwined and central to everything. Section 25(2) goes on to provide that property may be expropriated for a “public purpose” or in the “public interest” - subject to compensation. The definitions of “public purpose” and “public interest” along with issues of compensation are of central importance to legal disputes around the deprivation of property.

L
ymph fluid flows throughout the body and passes to the regional lymph nodes. These nodes can be found in the neck, head, axillary, abdomen, the groin and other areas. The lymphatic capillary network empties into the large thoracic duct and the right lymphatic duct.
MAXINE BLANE Private nurse practitioner and registered Nurse. Maxine is qualified with a diploma from Addington Hospital (1987). She completed a recognised lymphoedema and wound care course in 2016 with international accreditation, followed by a sports massage course in Feb 2017 under a dynamic tutor in Durban.
Lymphatic drainage is a very light massage therapy, bearing in mind that the lymphatic capillaries are 3mm below the surface of the skin. They work hand in hand with the circulatory system and empty the lymphatic fluid into the venous system. Lymph nodes act as the "garbage disposal" system of the body, filtering waste products and producing cells which create protection against infection. The nodes also regulate the protein content of the lymph fluid. Disorders of the lymphatic system can result in lymphoedema, and this can be due to hereditary factors, or as a result of a cancer related condition, major surgery, radiation treatment, obesity, severe trauma or untreated oedema. Lymphoedema is an abnormal swelling of a limb or part of the body caused by an excessive collection of lymphatic fluid below the skin. Treatment of lymphoedema is aimed at reducing the swelling. Treatment includes:
• • • • • • •
Complete Decongestive Therapy Manual Lymphatic Drainage Multi-layered Lymphoedema bandaging Meticulous skin care Exercises and self massage Compression garments Self management
Cancer related lymphoedema can be treated. With early diagnosis and treatment, a person can enjoy a full productive life. Lymphatic Drainage can be performed on patients with congestion in any area; upper limbs, lower limbs, heavy swollen legs and ankles, the face, puffy swollen eyes and lids. It relieves congestion and stimulates the flow of a sluggish lymphatic system. Other benefits of Lymphatic Drainage: • Assists in recovery from injury and illness; • Loosens tight muscles; • Clears congestive conditions; • Relieves heaviness, tightness and swelling; • Diminishes chronic pain; • Enhances skin tone; • Promotes restful sleep, and many more.

hese prestigious annual awards measures customer satisfaction across airports globally. As the benchmark for the aviation industry, the World Airport Awards are voted by customers in the largest, independent annual global airport customer satisfaction survey. The 2017 Awards were based on 13.82 million airport survey questionnaires of 105 different nationalities during the survey period and covered more than 550 airports worldwide and covering traveller experiences across 39 key performance indicators from check-in, arrivals, transfers, shopping, security and immigration, through to departure at the gate. The General Manager, Terence Delomoney stated, “I am truly humbled, though not surprised, at our achievement in being recognized as the Best Airport Staff in Africa. Our airport stakeholders, together with their teams, have shown the world what it means to offer the friendliest, warmest and most efficient service to passengers utilizing this airport.
We have won many awards as an Airport over the years, but winning the Best Airport Staff recognition is one which I feel proudest of. It is a direct reflection of you, and the life and energy that you bring to what will otherwise only be bricks, mortar, steel and glass. I wish to congratulate and thank each and every one of you and your teams for your part in achieving this accolade. Getting to the top is hard work, but remaining there and setting higher standards is even harder work. I have no doubt that with your passion and energy you will be able to take on this challenge and achieve even more in the Global arena”. Recently the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) award were announced and our three local airports excelled again. The independent surveys are conducted with some 600 000 passengers around the world. The ASQ awards are made by Airports Council International (ACI), the trade association of the world’s airports. ASQ is the only worldwide programme to survey passengers at the airport on their day of travel. King Shaka International Airport took second place while Cape
Town International Airport took third place in the ASQ awards for the best airport in the Africa region. Colin Naidoo, Senior Corporate Affairs Manager said, “We are now ranked 35th in the World’s Top 100 Airports with Cape Town International Airport moving from 22 to 19 and O. R. Tambo International the 37th Best Airport in the World. Our airport also recently positioned very well internationally as the 10th Most Punctual Airport in the world in our category by OAG Aviation Worldwide. That is also proof that through our service excellence attitude our customers are being processed on time to their destinations. This places our airport, OR Tambo and Cape Town in the Punctuality League which is all about collaboration and quality service which is the key to this level of success”. Naidoo concluded, “Our airport is becoming a destination of choice for business and leisure and we will continue to work with our partners to increase flights and routes to Durban and KZN. These accolades will now move our airport into other benchmarking categories and we will be competing with larger airports globally and the challenge becomes to increase our service above and beyond. I have every confidence that our teams and stakeholders can deliver. Let us all enjoy this success. Thank you all for your ongoing contribution to make King Shaka International Airport the best airport in the world!!!”

TRADING
MI STAKES TO AVOID Text Struan Campbell | Firm PSG Wealth Umhlanga | T: +27 86 088 8810 | E: struan.campbell@psg.co.za
T
he trading environment has changed drastically over the past 15 years. Today investors enjoy access to company information within moments of it being announced. Being able to access all this information can be a double-edged sword. While it could help in making better-informed investment decisions, it could also potentially derail you. Being clear on why you are investing helps avoid being overwhelmed by too much information. 1. INVESTING WITHOUT A PLAN
If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there and it is easy to go astray. Having a personal investment plan in place can help you avoid this pitfall. A plan will also help you to clarify: • Goals and objectives – what are you investing for and what do you want to achieve? • Risks – what risks are relevant to you or your portfolio? Your goals will determine what risks are appropriate and acceptable to your investment. • Asset allocation – what percentage of your total portfolio will you allocate to local equities, international stocks and other asset classes? • Diversification – allocating to different asset classes will help you to diversify your portfolio. You need to be clear about each of these before you start investing. 2. FOCUSING ON THE WRONG HORIZON
Most investors are too focused on the short term and do not stick to their trading plan. If you are saving for a longer-term goal, like your retirement 25 to 30 years from now, what the stock market does in the next 12 months shouldn't be your biggest concern.
In this issue, we focus on stockbroking and Struan shares some thoughts penned by the head of Securities at PSG Wealth, Grant Meintjes.
4. NOT RE-BALANCING YOUR PORTFOLIO OFTEN ENOUGH
Re-balancing is the process of ensuring your portfolio remains in line with your investment plan and goals. Re-balancing is difficult because it forces you to sell the shares that are performing well, and consequently make up a larger portion of your portfolio than you intended, and buy more of the shares that aren’t doing quite as well. For this reason, we find that many investors do not re-balance their portfolios often enough. 5. NOT INVESTING ENOUGH QUALITY TIME
When you invest your hard-earned money, you need to spend time and effort on your investment strategies. You would not walk into a car dealership and buy the first car on the floor. You would rather carefully research different models, compare their specs and consider the costs carefully. It could take quite some time before finally committing to the right car for you. 6. CHASING RECENT WINNERS
This factor has probably led to more poor investment decisions than any of the others we have mentioned so far. Many investors select companies, strategies and sectors because their recent good performance lead them to feel that they are missing out on great returns. The temptation to adjust your plan could be very real if a share or sector has done extremely well for a long time.
However, the cycle could well be nearing its end and the smart money could already be moving out. You need to stick to your investment plan and re-balance to avoid this pitfall. This is the exact opposite of chasing performance.
3. GETTING CAUGHT UP IN THE THRILL OF THE TRADE
Plan to avoid mistakes - Investors who focus on their investment objectives and plan can recognise and avoid these six common mistakes. They are more likely to achieve their investment goals because they invest with the end in mind.
Unfortunately, this need to make money sometimes means investors make hasty investment choices based on too little actual research.
“2017 has thus far been filled with a tremendous amount of political noise which could easily have led one astray. Stick to your game plan! But if the emotional roller-coaster becomes too much to bear then consult an expert – an objective viewpoint can do wonders to get you back on track, ends Struan.
Investors often look for easy opportunities to make money when they start trading. The ‘feelgood aspect’ of making money drives them to chase the next big thing.
