Carrol Boyes has recognised the importance of sustainable initiatives in mitigating damage to the environment and has partnered with The Joinery to create a range of unique tote bags and pouches. The Joinery’s focus is on finding solutions to environmental and community issues through design. “We create local, sustainable products made from recycled plastic bottles, hemp and responsible fabrics as a way to positively contribute.” As one of the worst managers of plastic waste in the world – South Africa comes in at 11 – it’s up to industry leaders to pose better solutions and forge a way ahead. It’s not all bad news however, and while the country is far behind others in terms of its recycling initiatives, it is showing gradual improvement. According to Plastics SA, last year 1.144 million tons of recyclable plastic entered the waste stream, of which 41.8% was recycled in South Africa based on input tonnages. This is a year-on-year increase of 5.9%. During this period, a growing number of organisations and consumer groups have become actively involved, resulting in a positive impact on the amount of plastics that were collected and recycled.
This increased awareness and growing proactive spirit among businesses and private citizens extends into the luxury sector too, where the emphasis has always been on longevity - pieces that are kept and treasured rather than relegated to trash after a short lifespan. Carrol Boyes is known for its artisanal products, high end and more recently food and wine, and this latest project sees the company collaborating with local business The Joinery to create a range of felt tote bags and pouches. All the products are made by local artisans and sewing co-operatives based in and around informal settlements in Cape Town – and as such its initiatives contribute directly to job creation and furthering innovation in the textile economy, turning potential waste into something positive. This recent partnership with Carrol Boyes has resulted in a beautiful and collectable range of bags. Each handmade tote and pouch is made from recycled plastic bottles otherwise destined for the landfill. A total of 7,000 bottles was used for the creation of 1,000 totes and 1,000 pouch bags for the Carrol Boyes and The Joinery collaboration. Initiatives such as these, where sustainability and community involvement can be combined, underpinned by a spirit of collaboration, emphasize the pioneering and big picture the Carrol Boyes ethos represents.

Located 30 kilometres west of Durban near Shongweni, Tongaat Hulett’s 2000 hectare Ntshongweni Urban Development will be an environmentally sustainable, people-centric and inclusive new community. Part of its Urban and Retail Core, the Mall of the West, an 80 000 square metre regional shopping centre will kick start the development and activate surrounding communities which have, until now, been largely underserviced. WISHING I never really thought that I’d spend as much time in airports as I do. I don’t know why. I always wanted to work globally and that would mean lots of travel. My career as Human Behaviour Specialist and Executive Leadership Coach affords me the opportunity to work in different cities and organisations globally, right throughout the year. Although I have a passion for what I do, traveling so much is taxing and not at all glamorous.
W
hile sitting in airport lounges, observing business people frenzying around on laptops and cell phones, trying to wrapup the year’s business before embarking on a long awaited December rest, I often observe how tired and worn-out most people look, especially around November. Eleven months of performance pressure, deadlines and making ends meet takes its toll on humans. As Executive Leadership coach I often challenge the highly stressed and exhausted executive managers whom I have the privilege of working with, by asking them why they allow themselves to be pushed beyond a limit where they compromise their health, both emotionally and physically. The discussion normally ends up with the same answer all the time: “I do not know what my “enough” is.” We live in a society where the pressure to perform is high and success is defined by having more, doing more and being more. Your success is measured by your corporate job title, the car you drive, the size of your home in the right estate and the expensive clubs you belong to. “When is enough, enough?” - Anthony T. Hincks Evan Tarver, author of “The New Meaning of Rich”, defines social pressure as follows: “Social pressure is the direct influence of other people on your thoughts, desires, and actions. It’s the feeling that you should follow a path that’s considered “acceptable” by modern society.” Social pressure confines us to a box, but, as Evan Tarver points out: “Social pressure isn’t an external force exerted by society in an attempt to keep you confined to a path you ultimately don’t want. Rather, it’s internal pressure you put on yourself based on your subconscious need to fit in with those around you.”

In my opinion, the only way to break the cycle of the societal pressure is to ensure that you know what your “enough” is. So think about this one question that I have been spending a lot of time thinking about: “What is my enough?” Finding the answer may be a most liberating moment. When it comes to work, your personal life, your relationships, and most importantly, your precious time, what is your enough? How much money do you really need to live a full life the way you want to and not what the media dictates to us? What is it that you need to help you achieve your purpose? And when is enough really enough? The word “enough” is defined in the dictionary as: “as much or as many as required.” When you discover what your enough is instead of pursuing someone else’s purpose or dream, you will realize that you get to write the rules for how you want to spend your time and life. And if you are lucky enough to know how to make the shifts to have a simpler life and live your enough, you will use time as a way to make important choices of how you get to work, live and play. Synonyms to the word “enough” is listed in the dictionary as: “Sufficient, adequate, ample, abundant.” Knowing your “enough” is the road to abundance abundance in health, abundance in time, abundance in peace, abundance in focus, abundance in flow and grace. So, do you know what your enough is? What is it that you need to fully live your purpose? I bet when you truly invest the time in yourself to answer this question and use your own success metrics, as you define success, you will make different choices about what’s truly important in your life.
YOU ENOUGH Sitting at the airports which I both love and hate, I have time to reflect on my personal “enough” and I am then again reminded of the story published by Bob Parks in 2001 of an elderly father and his daughter saying goodbye at the airport. They had announced the daughter’s departure and standing near the security gate, they hugged and the 80 year old dad said, “I love you. I wish you enough.” She in turn said, “Daddy, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Daddy.” They kissed and she left. The father walked over toward the window to watch his daughter board her flight. A bystander who overheard the conversation and was standing next to the father at the window asked the old man: “Forgive me for asking, but why is this forever goodbye?” “I am old and she lives much too far away. I have challenges ahead and the reality is, the next trip back would be for my funeral,” the old man said. “When you were saying goodbye I heard you say, “I wish you enough.” May I ask what that means?” The old man began to smile. “That’s a wish that has been handed down from other generations. My parents used to say it to everyone. When we said ‘I wish you enough,’ we wanted the other person to have a life filled with just enough good things to sustain them. * I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright. * I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more. * I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive. * I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger. * I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting. * I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess. * I wish you enough hello’s to get you through the final goodbye. As we end of the working year for 2018 and prepare ourselves for Christmas celebrations, my wish for each and every one reading this article is that you will find your enough and that you will align your purpose, your efforts and your focus to match your enough and not anybody else’s enough. ECON V As 2018 draws to a close, there are three core pervasive themes that have underpinned the property market this year, all of which may have significant implications for future trends. The first of these is that eco-friendly living is becoming more and more commonplace, and indeed necessary, as we become more mindful of reducing our carbon footprint and adopting a more sustainable way of living. According to a recent survey by SAPOA on office buildings in South Africa, green certified premium and A-grade offices had a vacancy rate of just 4.9% (compared to 8.3% for premium and A-grade offices without eco-friendly features) and enjoy a premium on asking rentals of 76%. (SOURCE: SAPOA Office Vacancy report, July 2018) Thus, eco-friendly buildings are not only in demand from a residential perspective, but also in the commercial space. Secondly, the economic landscape has resulted in consumers reducing expenses and finding more cost-effective ways to live. Finally, finding solutions to housing shortages across South Africa is an ongoing need. Within this context, unique and sustainable building methods may provide an all-encompassing, broad-sweep solution to address all three issues. So let’s explore a few of these options in order to ascertain whether or not they are indeed viable. There are several companies that have taken the initiative, specialising in smaller repurposed accommodation at a fraction of the cost of standard building methods. Umnyama Ikhaya manufactures off-the-grid, self16
sufficient container homes which are transportable to any address within the country. These homes are essentially 30m2 pods, which can be designed to accommodate either two sleeper or four sleeper floor plans. In addition to these standard modules, customised homes can be created by using this modular system to stack units on top of each other or side by side. The standard 30m2 units cost R400 000 and come fully equipped with off-thegrid solar panels, batteries, inverters and gas appliances. In addition, they have rainwater tanks, solar pressure pumps and waterless, extracting dehydration toilets. The result is a low cost and environmentally-friendly housing solution which can be adorned to create a funky, fresh look that is becoming increasingly fashionable across the globe. Indeed, Australia pioneered container homes and many of their container solutions have become part of a growing architectural trend. Ironically, what began as an affordable housing solution, has mushroomed into a design fetish, with world-class architects incorporating containers into their design language. The result has been a plethora of multi-storey contemporary homes with unique “industrial” features that set them apart from their conventional neighbours. At face value, prefabricated, container homes would appear to be the perfect

OMICAL IABILITY solution for South Africa: quick turnaround times; economically viable; and perhaps most importantly, eco-friendly. So why has this trend not gained traction? The issue might well be that the banks have not yet embraced this building philosophy. Nedbank, for example, would look at a mobile home financing package as follows: the land cost, which would be subject to standard mortgage financing criteria for vacant land, and the “container” home cost, which would be viewed separately. Thus, the land financing would require a loan-to-value ratio of fifty percent, which would mean that buyers would be required to raise deposits of fifty percent of the value of their land. The homes would then be regarded as “mobile” and hence the banks would need to get creative about financing same. One innovative suggestion could be that banks consider financing containers along the same lines as vehicle financing. Another is that in order for the banks to overcome the issue of “mobility”, they would be stringent about the “permanency” of the container – for example, is it embedded in concrete, so that it cannot be easily uplifted from the land?

According to Linda Rall of ooba, based on feedback received from the banks, both Standard Bank and ABSA have advised that they are not currently able to bond these structures as they fall outside their acceptable security requirements. FNB is open to considering financing options, but they have several strict criteria for example: the container home is to be fixed to a normal foundation footing/slab; the building needs to have complied with National Building Regulations and Municipal By-Laws; they will also assess the costs and benefits of using alternative building methods versus conventional ones. FNB will also consider developments provided that all banks work together and jointly approve the product in the proposed development. In addition to the above, technical requirements like NHBRC registration, and the use of an accredited professional team of builders and engineers are essential. The rationale behind these somewhat unusual lending criteria, is that the banks may be unsure about the longevity of these housing solutions. Whereas, traditional bricks and mortar homes have stood the test of time, and if anything, appreciate in value over-time, the banks may be of the opinion that prefabricated homes do not have a life-time guarantee and may in fact, depreciate over time. Furthermore, if the containers are perceived as mobile, the banks have no security for their lending – the containers could simply be uplifted and removed, leaving the vacant land as the only security for the banks. In addition, to the limitations imposed by the banks, our municipalities do not appear to condone unusual building methods, and hence, town planning divisions often fail to pass plans for projects that propose more environmentally sustainable, economically savvy, building options. A classic example of this is wooden homes. The use of modular, pre-engineered wooden homes is common-place in countries like the USA and Indonesia, yet in South Africa, and more particularly, in KZN with our Colonial heritage, wooden homes are simply not allowed to be built in many suburbs. This is perhaps a legacy from the past where wooden homes were deemed to be “rural huts” and not in keeping with more sophisticated, affluent suburbs. Again, this archaic mentality needs to shift to embrace a more modern, egalitarian view. Our sub-tropical KZN coastal belt provides the perfect landscape for the development of beautiful wooden beach homes. In closing, perhaps the solution lies in government endorsing some forward-thinking, progressive developers to take the lead and roll-out projects that make modular homes funky and functional and most importantly, financially viable, by having end-user financing options pre-packaged by the banks from the outset.

The suites are positioned to afford maximum privacy and minimal environmental impact. Excellent cuisine is enjoyed al fresco on the dining deck or beach deck overlooking the sea. Each room is on a raised platform nestled in indigenous forest in undulating dunes. The huts have full length glass windows and doors to let in the fresh breeze and sounds of the sea. Your own wooden deck reaches out into the forest where you may enjoy morning coffee amidst birdsong, or cocktails under starlight. Ashley Maclachlan from Urban Create has been working with Isibindi for the past 2 years, slowly transforming and updating their lodges. Thonga is a piece of paradise, says Maclachlan, so it has been an amazing experience spending time at the lodge while looking after their dĂŠcor, furniture, lighting and general improvements. The recently refurbished interiors are minimalistic and serene, keeping with the natural textures of reed, wood and thatch. Ashley says “The refurbishment of the bathrooms was a big challenge. These were brown in colour and dark. We had to open them up a lot and change the colour scheme to a cool clean grey. A highlight is the natural stone basins and the new large walk-in showers, designed with glass and low walls to maximize sea and bush views. Bedrooms are neutral and calming with blues and silver; the soft flowing mozzie nets add to the tranquility. Pops of funky coral brighten the rooms and bring an interesting element into the spaces. Beautiful rustic wooden walkways lead to the rooms from the main living and dining area.

The hundreds of ghost crabs that you see running down the long beautiful stretch of beach inspired the cut outs in the dining room, and create a real feature on the aqua wall! The bar area was given a facelift, removing the heavy dark paneled wood counter, replacing it with light wood, and a modern large fish scale design in soft silvers and aqua. Cushions and large bright graphics add a pop of colour and interest. A big talking point for guests is the bar counter top which has a drop in glass display section for shells and sea creatures. Just in case you need a little more spoiling, the Spa and their talented ladies are always keen and willing to treat you to a fabulous massage, either inside or in the new couples’ outdoor treatment area. The Spa has been designed in soft hues of greens and greys and natural products are used for treatments. Known as an Eco Lodge, the Lodge is very sensitive to its surrounding environment. Lighting in the lodge is soft and ambient and all bulbs are energy efficient. The lighting was done so that it cannot be viewed from the beach as it disturbs the turtle beaching patterns. There is also a huge drive towards the reduction of single use plastics and guests are reminded to TAKE TRASH & LEAVE TRACKS. The Group Executive head chef for Isibindi – Carl Moller is talented and enthusiastic about his food and his environment too. He grows his own tasty and trendy microgreens, thereby reducing the plastic and packets being brought into the Lodge. We have all seen it in the past where a development goes to market, but sales just don’t get off the ground. The state of the market, or the marketing of the development, can play a significant role but very often this comes down to a development just not being configured around what the market really desires at that time.
W
hen a new development offering is conceptualised around what a developer, or professional team, may feel is right for the market; or what they may want to see for themselves, it can differ considerably from what the buyer wants. Nowadays, the difference is that when developers are prepared to listen to facts, trends, insights and analysis upfront, they can configurate developments that are not only demand driven, but that also eliminate a vast amount of upfront risk. When simply mentioning “Market Research”, the term, practice and benefits are often not entirely understood, but when done correctly it can be somewhat of a science. In short, market research for property developers is the process of gathering, analysing and interpreting information about the target market, related to a development. The process includes information about historical, current and potential property prices in the area; research into the depth of demand, the demographic and geographic area profiles of the target market, the industry, and the competitors that are faced. This assists researchers to be very clear in their recommendation of detailed development elements such as price-point, sizing, unit mix, sales phasing, facilities to offer, parking allocations to provide, storage provision, and ultimately the projected rate of sale.

It is natural that developers will make assumptions on market demand if prior market research is not conducted. The problem with this approach is that intuition replaces a methodical evidence of development demand. Due to the large financial risk that developers take, failure to establish demand evidence could lead to serious issues for the developers, banks, investors or others. Market research is therefore a practice protecting developers from costly investment and development failures. Development risks include changing conditions such as decreased product demand, or several mirrored developments serving the same offering as your proposed development, within the same timeframe. Market research therefore enables the developer to seek evidence to determine, with a reasonable degree of certainty, the income producing prospects of a development and the ways in which that development can be differentiated within the market.
It’s always interesting to see how various elements of quantitative data can paint a very clear picture on a target market for a development. Insights related to aspects such as population growth of an area, historic rate of sales, the age breakdown of buyers, the percentage of first-time buyers and the ratio of renters versus buyers can all have significant impacts on product recommendations and can identify emerging trends within an area. When combined with market insights, then this becomes a very clear development yard-stick. In short, effective market research will guide the property development space throughout the country going forward, and considerably reduce the number of entities who develop on “gut-feel”. The result is better configured developments that attract greater demand and enhanced rate-of-sales. This is obviously an outcome that is in the best interest of developers, financers, investors and end-users. There are certain areas within South Africa where there is a large pipeline of developments that are in the planning, or newly launched phased. In future, there would be a combination of new development releases, and new phases within existing developments. The area from Umhlanga through to the North Coast is obviously one of these areas and here it becomes even more critical to ensure that each developer clearly identifies their niche and their differentiators and builds an offering around that. The result is meticulously planned developments that appeal to a cross section of the actual market demand. We expect that in the next few years there will be much stronger emphasis on upfront research and analyses from developers across the board which can only be a good thing for the market and all prospective buyers. We are always asked if the North Coast can sustain the amount of new and upcoming development. It most certainly can, as we are in the middle of SA’s property hot-spot! We just need to ensure that parties continue to work together to collectively position the area (to continue to attract investment from outside of the province), and we need developers continue to focus on differentiating their product offerings, create diversity of choice and to really identify their products to their target markets. Effective market research, across the board, is a critical factor in achieving this.
The sheer volume of knowledge necessary to maintain a competitive edge is overwhelming. Keeping up with pricing changes, market movements, target market profiling and competitor movements, is a full-time job and one of the key reasons why market research has become such a key service offering for a business such as ours.�

Isabel Roos asked Natasha Barnes, one of Imbizo Gallery's bestselling artists, to tell us a bit more about herself. Upon meeting Natasha, you immediately feel the enthusiasm and energy exuding from her.
Did you find art or did art find you? Art found me. I actually studied for an International Grande Diplome in Cordon Bleu Cookery from the prestigious Silwood Kitchens in Rondebosch and worked for many years as a cookery editor for one of South Africa’s top women’s magazines at the time. Painting was my hobby. Realistically “life is what happens while we are busy planning other things” and I soon found myself in a very different direction in a very short space of time. Swapping the spatula for a paintbrush. Art found me, but it was never the end game. Looking back, I took the right road, I don’t wake up in the mornings and say “all I want to do is cook” that never happened. I’m up before the sun every day so I can get into the studio and paint. Next year marks 25 years of professional painting, with no other source
of income. I’m proud of that.
over the world; tell us a little about that journey? I think if you have a passion for your work and you believe in what you do then you are capable of a great many things. You have to be the leader, not a follower, do your own thing; don’t copy other people because you perceive they are successful. I have been fortunate to have met an American art dealer early on in my career who has been hugely instrumental in my success. For a large part I have always treated my art as a business and still follow the same rules and principals. Over time the contacts and business relationships one build, feeds the machine that drives the whole package. I exhibit internationally 5 to 6 times a year and I am represented by numerous other galleries and dealers at individual events, art fairs and exhibitions. The traveling is part of the process and to be successful one has to be seen and heard. Attending the art fairs is my favourite part of my “job “. I have a share in a Gallery in the UK, the TURNER BARNES GALLERY is based in Shenfeild
and we have branch in Chelmsford, as well.
So you are an abstract painter? How often to you hear “ I can do that” “I can do that” should be my mantra; if only I had a dollar for each time I have been told that I would be Donald Trump right now. But the truth is you cannot do that, abstract painting is the hardest form of art, before you get to that point where you can let go and let the abstract mark making of the journey take shape, an artist has to have known and practiced traditional painting, and it takes many years to become a good abstract painter. There is a lot of bad stuff about lately, many of the paintings nowadays are more about craft than true abstract painting. You are considered as one of the best, your work sells all
Where have you just come from? When I started out 25 years ago the USA was my biggest market, but as the world has opened up we find ourselves looking East. Today, my largest selling markets are Hong Kong and Singapore. I have just returned from a Sell our Art Fair in Singapore. I am fortunate that my work appeals across the board to the expats and locals. It took years to get into the market, but I am established there and have a great following. Tell us about your creative process, what excites you? I paint on more than one canvas at a time, they are really large and take a while to complete, it depends on so many things, the weather, the light, how often the phone rings, where I have to rush off to, how many of my cats are lying under my feet!!! My travels are part of my creative process and provide my inspiration. I 39
colours for the next two seasons are pink, cobalt blue and mustard. Neutrals are still grey and an eggshell yellow cream. Not very exciting. Tell us about Natasha Barnes the author? One morning I woke up and thought that I wanted to write it all down, so I wrote a cookery book which is actually the story of my life as told through food. It is called the culinary adventures of a travelling cook and was published by Struik. I did all the food styling myself which was one of my favourite parts of my previous life as a cookery editor at the magazine. But like I said, I love cooking, but not enough to want to do it every day. Your brand recently branched out into home product and branded items, how did that come about? I have many images on file from work I have done over the years for publishers or for licencing. My decorative floral artworks go onto product through many companies worldwide; I wanted to extend the work to include product in South Africa; I wanted to bring the talent home. It’s only been going a few months and I am going to keep it small and exclusive, but having said that, I have just accepted my first international client in Singapore. We will be collaborating together on art workshops and home décor projects next year. If you were not a painter, what would you have done differently with your life? You know, I have always wanted to be a flight attendant. But I was too short back in the day. I know my life would not have turned out like this, but I sometimes wonder what the road had installed for me had I taken that route. don’t paint every day either, life has to go on and we have things to do, so about 5 mornings would be a good average. I never paint after 1pm, by then I am mentally done. My work is all in acrylic and I import my own paint from the USA. I use only the very best. I recently started painting watercolours again after 20 years, it was fun to dust off my old brushes again- I painted 6 and took them to Singapore and sold them all. You are considered to be one of South Africa’s most published artists, what does that mean? In a nutshell art publishing companies licence the rights from me to put some of my artworks onto posters and sell them as prints worldwide. I earn royalties from the sale of each poster. I still get asked to do a range of artwork prints each year for large stores in the UK and USA, most recently John Lewis, Marks & Spencer, Ikea and Bed Bath & Beyond. They send me the colour briefs for the next seasons – we work 18 months in advance, I do some new easy decorative abstracts for them and we create the next range going into homeware. I paint under several different names. The
What’s in stall for 2019? Whew, it is going to be my busiest year ever. For starters I am turning 50. So for that I am going to walk up to Everest Base camp with my friends from Bootcamp. Then I have several solo exhibitions this year, Imbizo Gallery, Ballito in April, Belgravia, London in June and Melbourne, Australia in August. A couple of painting workshops in Singapore and Mauritius, and Art fairs in New York, London, Hong Kong, Miami, Singapore and Jakarta. And for fun I am going to run and run until the road is up…

New owners Ian & Sandra McMurchie wanted to walk in and see straight through the house and onto the surrounding forest and Heron dam below. Tyrone confirms that the intent of the design was to really take full advantage of the beautiful "forest" site. With such thick bush encapsulating the house, privacy and direct sunlight were not really issues, so that enabled us to use large amounts of glazing to maximise views and natural light on offer and reinforce the indoor/outdoor lifestyle that Ian and Sandra had in mind'.

he original house on the plot of land was only half built and never took advantage of the incredible setting and views. Sandra and Ian fell in love with the large Flat Crown tree and views over the dam and decided it was to be that they would breathe new life into this house and make it their home and with the help of Louise Metcalfe from Storehaus Design and Tryone Reardon from Metropole Architects they did just that. Louise Metcalfe says� My roll was to take the architectural brief and express that in the interior design. We work closely with our clients to design an interior that compliments the family’s lifestyle, and in this home, the family is talented in many creative fields and wanted that eclectic flair to shine through. Many bespoke pieces of furniture were commissioned to give the home a sense of individuality while we incorporated some existing pieces of furniture and this lends a sense of history. Extensive use of wood, metals and stone made the home feel organic. Each room was designed to flow to the outside which accentuates that feeling of space and unity with nature. Every room has a view of the forest through the vast panes of glass. There are wooden decks off each room giving the sense of being in an indulgent adult tree house. The private and tranquil setting within the forest allows the wildlife to get as close as possible to the house. The owners are lucky enough to get Giant Kingfishers on their balcony upstairs each morning and frequent visits from the buck and porcupine in the garden below.

Not just HORSING around SARDA is an acronym for SA Riding for the Disabled Association, or as we like to call it: SA Riding for the Differently Abled. SARDA Durban is a registered NPO and PBO that enriches the lives of children born with physical or mental difficulties and Autism. The vision of SARDA Durban is to improve the quality of life for children with special needs through the physical, cognitive, social and emotional benefits associated with therapeutic horse riding. 52

hildren facing physical, visual or intellectual impairments participate in riding activities that are planned to add therapeutic value and to teach riding and other skills in an environment that is safe and tons of fun.
Volunteers are what keep the smiles on the children’s faces as SARDA Durban is entirely run by a group of passionate and trained volunteers. On riding days, volunteers prepare the ponies, activities and the paperwork for the arrival of the real stars of the show – the children. Our very special ponies at SARDA Durban are cared for as the heroes that they are. SARDA Durban has world-class facilities due to our generous supporters. These include a covered arena, a sensory trail and other outdoor areas. The riding sessions are planned to maximise each child’s potential in various areas. Rides on the trail include riding through a splash pond, having to duck under branches, stepping over logs and smelling different fruits and herbs planted on the property. This adds great input from a sensory perspective, offers lots to talk about and challenges reactions and balance. A very important aspect of the program is undoubtedly the sense of freedom it provides to the children who are restricted to exploring the world with crutches or bound to wheelchairs. It’s hard work for the volunteers but when they hear of the positive impact they are having on the children’s lives, it’s worth all the effort. We received feedback from a teacher: “I have also seen an increase in the clarity of speech, children with limited or no vocabulary appear to try new words and sentence construction has improved. Children currently using wheelchairs are beginning to show greater determination in trying to move independently for example reaching for toys or rolling over when they are on the mat to access things they want. The walking gait of other children using devices to aid walking has also improved. There is a definite improvement in muscle tone and an overall greater sense of self confidence from all the children who have had the opportunity to ride with SARDA Durban.” The results SARDA Durban have been achieving have been monumental in the children’s lives, given that the organisation is run by compassionate volunteers and donations. INVESTMENT What do investing and getting summer ready have in common? More than you may think! Dedication, perseverance and discipline are as key to investment success as they are to getting fit. The most important realisation, however, is that it is a lifestyle decision – not a one-off effort. You need to adopt three key behaviours to be successful in making this long-term lifestyle shift:

espite all the gimmicks and fad diets on the market, there is no programme to get fit or in shape quickly. If you go to the gym during winter, or for an early morning run in July, you’ll notice unused gym equipment and empty streets. Any dedicated runner or cyclist will tell you it is the regular, constant workouts throughout the year that allow them to live out their passion – even when the weather is less than ideal. Just as it takes a year-round effort to be fit come December, growing and maintaining your wealth is also a long-term game. In both cases, you need to adopt three behaviours to achieve your goals. Behavioural effects Canadian research company Dalbar has conducted research on the performance of investors relative to the S&P 500 Index for more than 30 years. They have found that the average investor’s portfolio only performs around half as well as the market average. The gap between market performance and investor return is due to destructive investor behaviour. This includes poorly timed switches between investments and poor capital allocation. You are unlikely to blame failure on your running shoes if you fall short of your Comrades dreams after not training for six months. Yet investors are quick to blame the markets, their adviser or the economy when it comes to not reaching their own goals, and ignore the impact of their own decisions and behaviour. Understand that emotional switching in response to market movements and news headlines leads to poor investment allocation decisions. Commit to a cool head and rational research under the guidance of an experienced investment coach. Benjamin Graham puts it best in The Intelligent Investor: “Investing isn’t about beating others at their game. It’s about controlling yourself at your own game.”
Realistic expectations You cannot go to the gym once a month, skip exercise during winter, and expect to be the ‘Hero of Hermanus’ in December. You need to train often, consistently, and over prolonged periods of time. You cannot focus on one body part and expect your entire body to be transformed, or only do cycling training when your aim is to complete a triathlon. It is important that an investment portfolio should be viewed holistically, well diversified and matched to your specific goals and needs. Take a long-term view – remembering that a period of three or four years is not long term, but 10 to 15 years is. Make sure your portfolio can deliver the expected return you require to achieve your goals. If you invested in shares for one year and reinvested your dividends, there was a one in five chance that your return would be negative over the year. Over three years, that negative experience drops to one in six – so a lower chance of not at least getting your money back after three years. This drops even further to one in ten over five years, and just one out of a hundred over ten years. Regardless of the training and commitment you put in, not all of us have the same physique. In the context of investments, it is important to keep in mind that inflation rates in South Africa have declined substantially over time. The 20-year average inflation rate is now 5.8%. Investments are best understood and evaluated in the context of their after-inflation returns. We can therefore also expect investment returns to be lower, and the classic annual return of 15% that we have grown accustomed to may now be too high an expectation. Considering afterinflation returns, however, investors are still well positioned to achieve their long-term goals.
The first important mind shift is to understand that you may very well be your own worst enemy when it comes to your investments.” 58
Planning and strategy While some may argue that any exercise is better than no exercise, the reality is that your exercise plans need to match your fitness goals. Randomly exercising on the first machine you set your eyes on in the gym is sure to disappoint you in the end. This is why most gyms include a consultation and provide you with a basic plan when you join. Of course, if you follow this plan diligently, you are sure to outgrow your workout plan and will need an updated version to ensure you remain on track. In the investment world, a similar principle applies. Craft an all-season, all-weather investment plan and do as Napoleon Hill said in his famous book, Think and Grow Rich: “Reduce your plan to writing. The moment you complete this, you will have definitely given concrete form to the intangible desire.” Your plan will require upfront analysis, regular reviews, and tweaks along the way – and a financial planner can be your personal trainer or coach to help ensure you reach your goals.
