News JET SETTING Readers and friends of LUXE took the magazine along on their travels. Beach theme anyone?

A big congratulations to both Marcelle Conradie and Sascha Bausch from Pam Golding Properties Ballito who have joined the very prestigious Emerald Circle, an exclusive inner circle for the Pam Golding Property Group's top-earning agents. This is also a fantastic honour for KwaZulu Natal, with these two agents being the first in the region to achieve this coveted status. RECONNECT & REDISCOVER A place like no other, Sibaya Coastal Precinct is situated along the lush northern corridor of KwaZulu-Natal, located between the natural boundaries of the Ohlanga and uMdloti river estuaries. Covering over 1,000 hectares of coastal land, Sibaya is one of South Africa’s most desirable locations. Elevating Sibaya beyond the norm, Tongaat Hulett Developments believes Sibaya will transcend the unsustainable trend of urban sprawl. According to Rory Wilkinson, Planning Director of Sibaya, “We aim to provide an entirely new urban identity – where people can reconnect with the things most important in life: family, community and nature.”

In Zulu, the word Sibaya means ‘kraal’, powerfully evoking the rich sense of togetherness that comes with being connected through community. In keeping with this ethos, ‘Reconnect. Rediscover.’ has become the central tenet of Sibaya’s brand philosophy. Some 60% of the total area will be rehabilitated, managed open space. This will include the existing

Hawaan Forest, rich in flora and fauna and a significant remaining coastal dune forest. The forest will be a protected and treasured natural asset, accessible to residents and visitors. The Sibaya Coastal Precinct will comprise a range of opportunities to live, work and visit. In addition to residential offerings catering to a wide spectrum of markets, a vibrant, interconnected economic hub will emerge. Facilities ranging from commercial to tourist, recreational, educational and more, will contribute toward a dynamic, inclusive community, delivering more than 25,000 permanent jobs for residents in the region. Approvals are in place for nodes one and five giving developers, investors and end users access to a range of residential, commercial, educational and recreational opportunities. In totality, an anticipated R21bn will be injected into the regional economy, firmly placing not only the North Coast, but KZN amongst the most desirable places to invest in SA. Construction in node one is set to commence in July 2016, bringing the promise of connected tranquillity in a setting of unmatched beauty. Find out more at www.discoversibaya.co.za

With its undulating landscape, pristine coastal dune forest, meandering rivers and hilltop ocean vistas, the vision for what this iconic destination will be is nothing short of magical.

ne of our home feature owners said it best when she said that some of the best summers in South Africa, are the winters in KwaZulu Natal, how true!

The ambience of living on the coast has found its way into our food, our homes and our lifestyles. The ability to have fantastic food or cocktails inspired by the sea, out on the deck in the winter sunshine, is one of the pleasures of coastal living. The decor of our homes pays homage to this way of life, with luxuriously breezy, open plan layouts making the most of our tropical climate. Al fresco entertaining at home, even in the midst of winter, is a key feature in most of our coastal homes. The feature homes in this issue are worlds apart style wise, but all three are characteristically North Coast! Or how about the fact that we are able to enjoy our ocean with its warm currents, whether for water sports or just for fun, all year round. We interviewed two up and coming surfing girls, Gabriella Lailvaux and Olivia Izzard, who are making the most of their talents and the fabulous opportunities they have of pursuing their passion for surfing, even during school with Crawford North Coasts surfing program. Out to capture all those special moments, our collection of works of some local, seasoned and professional photographers, is a creative, visual feast. To showcase images that are the photographers favourites was a delight and we appreciate their taking part.

Congratulations to the winners of the first round of the Win with LUXE and eLan competition. Enjoy the terrific prizes! Sponsored by the eLan Property Group, the competition is once again on for this issue. Go take a look on pages 70 and 71 and enter online to win. With a number of developments coming on line this year, our area is primed to become the destination of choice for many. All three estates featured in this issue (Blythedale, Palm Lakes and Sibaya) are significantly substantial in size and the facilities they aim to offer residents are unique and generous. Welcome on board the LUXE team to Mia Venter, who just had to fit in a once in a lifetime trip to Thailand before she started with us! Mia will be driving our advertising sales for LUXE Magazine and has a wealth of experience having worked for various publications over the years. Our contributors have once again outdone themselves and we look forward to featuring more stories about our region, the many interesting people in our community and their remarkable endeavours. Grab a coffee, a warm spot in the sun and enjoy! Wishing you pleasant reading...

SPA SPOIL! The spa draws inspiration from its surrounds with the calming motion of the ocean only a few meters away being mirrored in the spa ambiance. Walking into the spa, you are immediately transformed to another world. The combination of serene music, the calming smells of essential oils and perfect lighting all works together well to make you leave after your spa experience feeling rested, pampered and completely loved.

Overlooking the beautiful Indian Ocean, in the quiet town of Salt Rock, lies Canelands Beach Club and Spa. When invited to visit recently, we were introduced to an “out of this world” experience.

Three well equipped spa rooms, a quaint lounge area and bathroom with large shower makes this spa small enough to get individual attention, but the well trained, friendly therapists still give the professional treatments we all expect. The spa treatments include various healing earth ceremonial full body massages and healing earth body treatments. Facials, healing earth rituals, hands and feet, waxes and tinting complete the full body

pampering experience. Using Esse Organic Skincare and Healing Earth, this spa offers their clients a “time-out” from their busy lives. If you have some time, book with Canelands Beach Club and Spa for lunch, and maybe extend your visit with a spa treatment before lunch to make it a holistic experience. Visit www.thecanelands.co.za or telephone 032 525 2300 to find out more about their amazing offerings.

FUTUR GROWT Why this should be your ultimate destination...

I

n May this year I did a flight test for the husband of a family that has permanently moved to the North Coast from the UK. It was pointed out to me by this well-travelled pilot that in comparison to many parts of the world, including those areas often considered as alternate places to live, we have so much to be thankful for and to appreciate. While in the air, looking down along the breathtaking coastline between the Umgeni and Tugela rivers, I had to acknowledge that the development and growth in population of the North Coast is testament to the pilot’s sentiments. The beaches were undeniably what originally beckoned the development of a chain of small coastal villages. These beaches, with beautiful sheltered coves, superb rock pools, large open sections of golden sands and warm tropical waters, provide a home to abundant and varied sea life. Hundreds of bottle-nose dolphins regularly frequent this part of the coast and there is an annual visit from the Humpback and Southern Right Whales with their new calves. These beaches also provide some of the best swimming beaches in the country and are a playground to a host of other popular activities like fishing, surfing, diving, snorkelling, wind surfing and canoeing. As this area has developed into the

bustling centres they are today, we now find that there are many other attractions on our doorstep including world-class game and nature reserves with lodges that are only a short drive away, and we are spoilt for choice with the magnificent golf courses, shopping centres and restaurants.

For a developer it has been an exciting time to live in this area and I have witnessed the massive growth that has taken place over the recent years. We are set to see even greater growth over the coming years. One new project is the impressive ‘Tinley South Bank’ development that stretches from the end of Sheffield Beach (Christmas Bay) all the way to Tinley Manor and back from the coast to the N2 freeway. This Tongaat Hulett Development will be one of the largest developments the area has seen and is in the process of finalizing the layout in order to lodge the required Town Planning application, together with service agreements. The developer is also currently pursuing the Environmental Record of Decision. A development currently on everyone’s lips is ‘Mount Richmore’ in Salt Rock. This is a 190 ha estate, which boasts the popular Curro School and the soon to be launched 12,000m2 shopping centre at its entrance. Mount Richmore will also have an A-grade office park, approximately 300 sectional title units in a retirement village, with an assisted living centre containing both frail and step down care and a separate lifestyle village of 310 units. There is also a planned medical centre and a hospital next to a central mixed-use boulevard. Mount Richmore is not the conventional gated estate as the main thoroughfare is accessible to the public with the various freehold site areas and sectional title

developments separately secured within gated areas. Choices of fully serviced freehold and sectional title sites are now available directly from the developer. The recently launched luxurious eLan flagship ‘Blythedale Coastal Resort’ has broken ground and is reporting increasing sales. The ‘Elaleni’ and ‘Zululami’ Estates are two other estates in the area, which look primed to soon provide exciting new opportunities. ‘Lazuli’ has just released some new unit types in their retirement lifestyle development. IF Hotels & Resorts are engaged in the planned ‘Zimbali Lakes Resort’ development overlooking the Tongati River and developers are reporting record sales on units within the new ‘Sibaya Coastal Precinct’. There is no doubt that this area is set to see a major influx of people over the coming years, with all the added attractions, infrastructure upgrades, the King Shaka International airport and adjacent Dube Trade Port; our position between the two ports of Durban and Richards Bay, where we are fast becoming a destination of choice. The number of permanent residents now exceeding what was not so long ago lost to the periodic influx of holidaymakers.

WHERE YOU CHOOSE TO WATER IT

ost of my conversations these days at some or other point have water as a topic. Our beautiful country is in the grip of the worst drought that we could imagine and our coastal communities are under constant water shortage threats and restrictions. Wherever I engage with people, be it friends, members of my community or clients that I serve, WATER seems to be a conversation point. Besides the drought, our country is caught up in the midst of quite an economic downturn. It is as if the drought has become the analogy of the economic times we are living in. The average working class family is experiencing tough times. The petrol price increased yet again, food prices are sky rocketing. Where will our hope come from? “Water gives life” This got me thinking, why not grab the opportunity presented and be the water to others in times of drought? What a wonderful opportunity to reach out and bring life. In the words of Santosh Kalwar: “Be like water. Float in the times of pain or dance like waves along the wind which touches its surface.” The grass is greenest where we choose to water it and therefore instead of focusing on the gloom, I made a mind shift to be the wave that dances along the wind. “Living creatures are nourished by food, and food is nourished by rain. Rain itself is the water of life which comes from selfless service” – Bhagavad Gita We can be the source of water to so many other people if we are open to opportunity. Whenever I drive through the Mvoti Plaza on my way to my office in Ballito in the mornings, I notice my fellow South Africans waiting next to the freeway for taxis to pick them up and transport them to work. These economic active South Africans pay between R15 to R20 one way to get to work. This is quite a chunk out of a small monthly salary. Passing by, in an empty car, I realised that I

10

am presented with an opportunity to be a source of water to my fellow South Africans. The first morning I pulled over, people were wary. They cautiously approached my car and asked if I needed help. When I said that I am offering lifts to Ballito, the car filled up in a matter of seconds. Dropping off my passengers, I was offered transport money. When I said that I don’t want money, it was greeted with much appreciation for the unexpected gift. The smiles and “God bless you’s” I received in return became the wonderful soothing source of water that nourished my soul. I felt nourished by the people who shared my space for a few minutes.

Where do you choose to focus in tough times?

During these early morning rides, the conversations across cultures, focuses on the universal challenges of raising families and creating opportunities for our children. We talk about politicians and our hope for better leadership, the drought, the weak rand and the education system. We share our thoughts and our views and most of all we share laughter. We become each other’s source of water. By reaching out to each other in these difficult times, by breaking down barriers through support and collaboration, we as South Africans will survive the drought that we are currently gripped in. Let us all do something small today to water the garden of somebody who expects it least. Let us be the change that we want to see. With random acts of kindness we create unexpected oasis for fellow South Africans that are not stealing their way to riches, but are getting up daily to go to work, to contribute to the taxes of our amazing country that we live in and create a future for their children. Leonardo Da Vinci said: “Water is the driving force of all nature.” Let kindness be the driving force in these tough times. Life is like a winding river. The twists and turns may seem like a detour but it is actually an opportunity to bring nourishment to someone whom otherwise you never would have met.

Always be like water. Float in the times of pain or dance like waves along the wind which touches its surface.” Santosh Kalwar

eeting your life partner after living in a new town for 3 months sounds a bit like a fairy tale - not so for Simbithi residents JohanĂŠ and Leunis van Rooyen.

With smooth clean lines and stylishly spacious, this Simbithi home blends perfectly with its natural surrounds. 12

"I fell in love with Ballito after coming down from Pretoria to do a work presentation in Umhlanga. It was the middle of winter but absolutely glorious here on the coast", says

JohanĂŠ, originally from Vryheid in Northern KwaZulu Natal. She transferred to Ballito four years ago and met

Easy on the eye, magnificent views to be enjoyed both day and night, combined with the perfect location make this recently completed Simbithi Eco Estate home one to remember. It also goes to show that having a hands on approach to building your dream home can reap big rewards. Undeterred by the steep site, these owners managed to create a clean, simple and functional home.

Leunis who has been living on the coast for the last ten years. The couple met through a mutual friend who convinced them to go on a blind date. The rest, as they say, is history. With safety and security top of mind, the couple set out, determined to buy and build a home within an estate on the North Coast. After a leisurely drive through Simbithi Eco Estate, the big open spaces, simple yet elegant architecture and lifestyle orientated facilities, clinched the deal for both JohanĂŠ and Leunis.

Buying an extremely steep site was not ideal but with Leunis's previous renovating experience and the fact that he was fast friends with local architect, Llewellyn Cronje from CA Architects, the couple resolutely set about the undertaking of building their dream home. "We both jotted down a list of each of our separate wants and needs to discuss with our architect. I can't stress enough how important it is to have a great fit with your architect. Even though Leunis and Llewellyn are friends, and I thought I may not get everything I wanted, Llewellyn was more than fair", laughed JohanĂŠ.

The split entrance to the home gracefully guides you either to the ground floor with the living area, kitchen and dining area and cinema or upstairs to the four spacious bedrooms. The breathtaking views fill the visual space and are maximised with stacking glass doors leading out onto the patio and exterior bar, braai and entertainment area. 13

A light, airy feel was achieved with the use of a soft neutral palette of earthy browns and splashes of nature inspired greens, ensuring that the master bedroom is an oasis of quiet and calm. With the help of Danelle from Graphic Gurus, JohanĂŠ was inspired to express her creative side with the decor of the home. The re-purposing of existing furniture ensured that heirloom pieces were incorporated into the home without looking dated or old fashioned.

The couple employed project manager Benno Terbalanche who, in turn subcontracted out the necessary construction work. JohanĂŠ was tasked with the administration side of the build, but she did get to flex her creative muscles with the furnishings of the home with the help of Danelle from Graphic Gurus. Leunis managed the structural side, often visiting the site twice a day - his hands on approach and overseeing the project played a big role in the build being completed in a record eight and a half months. "We moved in on the 15th December 2015 and our family arrived from out of town for Christmas - it all worked out perfectly", says Leunis. The couple wanted a home that would accommodate their desire to grow their family. With four generously proportioned, en-suite bedrooms within the home, the couple also added a self-contained flatlet above the four car garage. Each room in the home has a spectacular view thanks to the use of floor to ceiling windows and sliding or folding/stacking doors. The elevated site also brought unexpected sea views once the home was built. The informal open plan style of the downstairs area creates a space that is fresh and visually appealing. The use of a muted palette with a great deal of natural wood and white surfaces adds to the relaxed ambience. Indigenous planting fills the exterior space, emphasising a complementary and contemporary finish to the home. 10,000 litre capacity Jojo tanks have been installed to harvest rainwater from three of the home's roofs to provide drinkable water and solar panels are fitted to supply power to the geysers and to heat the swimming pool.

T

he difference between what most of us do to get paid versus what we really love to do varies. Yes, we may be doing what we are talented at but when a price is put to something, a bit of that love is sometimes lost. The same applies to photographers. They are doing what they love to do but they don't always get to take the photos that drives their passion. We rounded up 5 of our favourite photographers and asked them to send us some of their much loved images - there is really no need for words from our side, the photos speak for themselves!

17

At present, Peter is working on a documentary called 'Township Yogi'. www.townshipyogimovie.com The documentary follows the setup of grassroots yoga studios in Inanda and KwaMashu, with the assistance of qualified yoga teachers from Durban. It traces the establishment of yoga classes and the attitude/involvement of the community – in places where the majority of people have never heard of 'yoga’ - and focusses on five residents from Inanda, KwaMashu and Ntuzuma townships, who are selected to participate in yoga teacher training courses. 'Township Yogi' follows them, as they use yoga to help them transform their lives, and explores what ripple effect this has in some of the poverty-stricken, HIV, Whoonga and crime-ridden communities in which they live.

He worked as an Art Director/Creative Director in various advertising agencies until he started his own agency in 1986 - he was the founding partner and Executive Creative Director of Matthews and Charter. By 1992 the agency was rated in the top three most creative agencies in South Africa by Financial Mail and named South African Agency of the Year by Readers Digest. Peter has won many local and international awards for his creative work including Cannes, New York and London International. After 16 years as owner and creative head of M&C, Peter sold his share in the agency to Ogilvy in order to focus on his art, photography and film directing, and in 2000 he started Peter Matthews Pictures. In 2007 Peter directed and co-produced his first motion picture, 'Oil on Water'. It received Best Picture at the Everglades International Film Festival and was nominated an Official Selection at 10 other international Festivals.

They share their fear of Whoonga crime and violence, the effects of high unemployment on the country, and of HIV/Aids in their own lives, and in their communities. Visuals poignantly illustrate the stark poverty of townships, overcrowded cemeteries, and the effects of HIV/ Aids and unemployment as they claim lives, jobs and hope. The changes in their lives are evident as they embark on a journey of learning yoga – and learning to teach yoga – and the documentary uncovers the effects that this has on them, their

families and their wider township communities. He is also in development on a new major motion picture called 'ZULU - Day of the Dead Moon', due to go into production in 2017.

ON PHOTOGRAPHY: His photography is based on the concept that looking is not the same as seeing and is derived from catching moments in time. They are real and spontaneous and more about being in the right place at the right time. Peter is the Chairman of the PawPrint Africa Project, a NPO to help literacy and raise awareness of conservation in rural areas.

"We love living on the North Coast for several reasons. I lived in Durban for many years, so the quiet and openness away from the city is something I cherish. Zimbali is particularly beautiful as we have the sense of living in a game reserve (it actually is a game reserve - bushbuck, impala, duiker, mongooses and over 200 species of birds live harmoniously with the residents in an environment that has maintained much of the natural bush). We have easy access to great restaurants, are close to the business hub of Umhlanga and only 15 minutes from the King Shaka International Airport. With several kilometres of our own deserted beach front and the best weather in South Africa, this really is paradise."

t is dark at 7pm as I drive up the driveway towards a home that is half building site, half glowing lights of domestic sanctuary. I have been on a long shoot all afternoon and have a stiff back from maintaining balance while precariously perched on a 7 foot wall on the perimeter of a coastal manor, while waiting for the perfect light. There is half a cup of beach sand in each of my shoes from a shoot earlier in the day and I have thorns in two of my throbbing fingers from the tree I used to climb up aforementioned wall. The 5 cups of life giving caffeine have finally left my system. It was a magical day but through my fatigue I am looking forward to the loving arms of my wife and a full glass of red wine that await me. My expectations evaporated seconds after opening the door. It sounds like there is an epic battle between good and evil going on in the room of our 4 month old baby. There seem to be a team of banshees involved and it sounds like evil is gaining the upper hand. I take my shoes off, knock out the sand into a flower pot, and quietly start looking for a bottle of red wine. The “vanquisher of evil”, “baby tamer” and “production manager on semi-maternity leave” and I have been heading towards this point since embarking on a romantic university fling in the year 2000. Since then she has worked in the TV world, I have edited for image libraries and we

have travelled to some pretty incredible spots around the planet on our journey to the North Coast. We had to be dynamic. We made business plans on paper napkins and started out in a small bedroom with a camera, a laptop, a couple of lenses and what could only be described as a university student diet.

"Photography has taken us on quite a ride. To a certain extent, I have given up the reins and held on tight, like a terrified tourist on a mountain mad Basotho pony, heading for home over dirt roads and potholes, egged on ironically by the tourist's screaming and wildly flailing arms and legs." In years gone by I have taken photos while lying on my back in a train while people partied around me. I have shot while waist deep in water under mangroves on an island in Panama. I've done jobs from helicopters, aeroplanes and microlights. I have taken photos of the poorest of the poor and the most famous in the world. I have shot squatter shacks and magnificent mansions, I have covered a touch of fashion, some surfing, jazz, deserts, mountains, seas, jungles, raves, monasteries, murder scenes, morgues and yes, even the odd toddler's birthday party.

This is a passing portrait of the life of a photographer balancing children with sometimes demonic tendencies, a career on the back of a runaway pony and life on the North coast of Natal. We, my small photographically inclined family and I, find ourselves on a coast that despite economic pressures is booming. Magnificent houses and idyllic estates are emerging alongside each other and deliver the architectural photographer a plethora of opportunities. Families following a lifestyle promise that the region delivers, want this special time in their lives to be documented, which presents the family portrait photographer an opportunity with world class natural backgrounds to work with. The internet and an easy commute to King Shaka International has allowed businessmen to operate remotely or even start up businesses that need to market themselves in an increasingly visual world. They of course need commercial photographers. So in order to avoid FOMO we do it all. We do it alongside other great photographers in the area and anyone that is following their passion in this idyllic place has to be cool in my book. It is fascinating and exciting to be documenting the growth of the North Coast from the back of my own only sometimes controllable runaway pony, through whatever shoots come our way.

A photographers job is to tell a story. Depending on how different elements are arranged through the lens will determine how the story is told. Most often the viewer is allowed to see a slice of the greater story from which they build their impression of the subject. 21

Barry Bowditch

life experiences & PASSIONS

I have been privileged to be commissioned to do training courses on wildlife photography and have travelled all over Africa pursuing this passion.

O

n your special day, it's so important to know that the memories are being captured beautifully.

A good photographer makes all the difference when it comes to looking back and re-living the event time and again. If the photographer has skilfully and artfully captured the nuances that made your wedding so special, they have done the job well - if not, the magic is lost forever. Barry Bowditch virtually grew up in a darkroom, helping his father to create magic with the lens. His passion for photography grew

and as technology advanced, so did his prowess as a seriously good photographer. Today, with over thirty years as a professional lens man, he is widely acknowledged as one of the top professional photographers on the North Coast and is constantly in demand. His reputation is your guarantee - with Bowditch Photography covering your special event, you can be sure that you will receive a collection of truly excellent photographs that you will treasure for a lifetime. Don't leave your memories to chance, use the best and you will never have cause for regret. "We started out nine years ago with our first wedding, with a couple taking a chance on us and now several zillion weddings later we still treat every wedding as if it were our own and I still can hardly sleep the night before each wedding and never loose the excitement shared with every bridal couple." From humble beginnings, Bowditch Photography employs a staff of four editors including two pro photographers. Barry personally has a diploma in photography and is an award winning photographer. Although he is experienced and has knowledge in almost all genres of photography, his passion lies with wildlife. But ultimately that does not bring in the bacon, so Bowditch Photography is easily one of the largest businesses in Kwa-Zulu Natal covering corporate, wedding, family, new born and architectural shoots.

FAR TOP LEFT Plight of the Phoenix. Several years ago the Phoenix ran aground off Sheffield beach. It took many months and attempts to pull her off the rocks. The Phoenix easily become the most photographed ship in SA. TOP LEFT This was the spectacular view that I had the pleasure of waking up to on my first visit to my daughters new home in Gibsons, British Columbia Canada. BOTTOM LEFT These elephants, according to our ranger, had probably never seen humans before. We had trekked for 3 days into the bush at Jongomero in The Ruaha area of southern Tanzania. I still get goose flesh thinking about this trip and the fact that I had a split second to capture these elephants in profile. BOTTOM MIDDLE Bride wiping tears of joy. We are always striving to capture the emotions as well as the moments of some of possibly the biggest days in peoples lives.

BOTTOM RIGHT Surfing the very first Mr Price Pro I photographed this young man “painting the Waves”.

ased in Ballito, Etienne Koenig and his wife Claire and gorgeous 14 month old daughter Olive are living the North Coast dream. We love the outdoors, camping, hiking or just sitting outside on the patio, taking in the view with a glass of Amarula and crushed ice!

B

After completing a National Diploma in Interior Design in 1996, with a distinction in photography, Etienne travelled for 13 years from Europe to the Americas, India and Australia. He based himself in the UK where he pursued a further education in photography.

As a commercial photographer specialising in architectural and lifestyle photography, Etienne undertakes commissions around the country. With Claire's passion and talent for photography matching Etienne's, the couple love working together shooting weddings and portraits. "Its amazing! As well as sharing our passion, we get to meet new and interesting people at the same time."

"I love that feeling you get at the start of a journey, that potential for discovery...I love that feeling you get as a movie starts, when your about to escape into the realms of sci-fi and fantasy for a few precious hours...I love the sea. I love the mountains. Which do I love the most? Mountains, for today, I think."

Photography still surprises me, the way it captures far more than I can ever see. Finding that one picture that stands out, the hidden treasure held in my hands. You just know when you have it. Your eyes and your instinct tell you. It's a love thing. For me it's a life thing. Photography is my language of life, my creativity, my vision.

01

Love the Berg! and love taking pictures there. Lakes Cave was our destination on this trip but the weather turned while hiking which made for some spectacular images.

02

I love this image that Claire took of Olive and I while visiting friends near Vryheid. I was taking Olive for a walk in the fields in the late afternoon.

03

This shot is one of a shoot I did for a farm in the Southern Berg. They wanted me to document their farm and livestock for various marketing purposes. I spent 4 days there, loving every moment of it!

This photo is from a couples shoot that Claire and I recently did together. This was such a fun shoot culminating in a perfect winters sunset!

STYLISHLY SEXY BOUDOIR

SANDRA

KEDDIE

To contact Sandra go to www.durbanboudoir.co.za or call 079 752 2124

If you want to see yourself the way others do, don’t look in a department store mirror! You need the view that others see, so that when he says, 'you look great honey', you know he truly means it.”

W

hen the time came for Sandra Keddie to relocate her home and photography business back to South Africa, after 15 years in the UK, she knew it would be to an estate.

including maternity and baby; business portraits; family photo shoots, model portfolios and matric farewells. After nine years of photographing weddings, she can still find time for a full-on bridal experience!

It complemented the couples preferred lifestyle and business needs, and they were keen to build exactly what they wanted. After looking at the many options available, including the premier estates of the North Coast, Sandra and her Scottish husband, Tony, decided to buy and build in 101 Acutts, Hillcrest.

But it is beauty and boudoir that is now the focus of the Sandra’s photography. Stylishly Sexy is the intention and the brand. Making women of all ages and sizes feel good about themselves.

Not only are they close to family, but also the main highway both to the beach and to the berg right on their doorstep, all combined with all of the amenities associated with the Upper Highway area such as the new Watercrest Mall and Hillcrest Hospital. It was the choice of plot, however, that made them fall for 101 Acutts. Bordering onto a conserved wetland, their garden blends into a haven for bushbuck, duiker and dassies, as well as a fantastic array of birdlife. It is an incredibly tranquil spot and easily accommodates their home, office and studio. The studio is where Sandra allows her passion for people to flourish. It is this connection with others, allowing them to relax and be at ease that ensures Sandra achieves fantastic results. Her studio offers a full range of photography 26

The experience starts with a consultation, then discussion and approval of the style of photography. Being able to offer a discreet, private setting of a studio within a secure estate is definitely part of the attraction. Hair and make-up by a qualified artist while sipping something sparkly, then into the studio where lights and chiffon all add to the magic and glamour; this is an experience, not just having a photograph taken. Sandra has been particularly touched by the openness of others and their stories – of cancer survivors and those recently diagnosed who want to document how they were before surgery, or to show that even those bodies after the most extreme of surgeries are still beautiful, still feminine, that they are still women. And others, who have lost, fought and won the battle against weight after babies or divorce or both; or those who want to be comfortable with themselves at a certain age, and realising that they are, and always will be, beautiful.

The best part for Sandra is the reveal, when she shows her client the finished product. She admits there are often tears, from her and the client; tissues are always on hand in the viewing room. And there are hugs and gasps and “Oh my word's!” And that is why Sandra loves Stylishly Sexy Boudoir. It makes people feel good about themselves and who doesn’t want a job as satisfying as that?

LUSH With fabulous sea, lagoon and bush views, taking on the renovation of a fairly old home within Prince's Grant Estate and creating the perfect holiday haven was effortless. Photography Chris Allan Photography | Location Prince's Grant Estate

F

or owners, Gill and Roger from Johannesburg, finding the perfect site to build their holiday home proved somewhat challenging. "The area in which we wanted our home was not at all in question, the architectural theme of Prince's Grant as well as the fact that it is somewhat secluded but still secure, was perfect for us. We had a very definite idea of what we wanted in terms of a home retreat, and there we had some difficulty", says Gill. The couple initially contemplated building from scratch but the opportunity to buy an existing house on an incredible site presented itself, and they jumped at the chance to purchase and renovate. "The remote

28

remodel did not phase us, the fact that we both have extensive previous renovation experience certainly helped!", laughs Gill. With a well defined idea of the space they wanted to create - an upstairs living area for themselves and a fully functional, contained downstairs area for their two grown children and four grandchildren - the opportunity to relax and spend time with family and friends. Designed by Ballito based architect, Tracy Levinson from LevEco Architects, the home is now a modern and bright space. "This project was a fun and interesting one. Renovations are always an opportunity to seriously

Timber decking and screens were added to areas to soften the feel of the house, as well as create new usable space around the pool.

RETREA

The house faces south, and only had small windows on the North side, not letting much light or winter sun inside. "One of the first things we did was break through a large sliding folding door on the north side, creating a wonderful courtyard space, for the dining room to open up onto" says Tracy. A lounge and braai area was also designed off this same courtyard, creating a warm sanctuary in winter, and when the South wind is blowing.

add value to a home and change it to suit the lifestyle of the owners, without the cost of a whole new home. This house epitomises this", says Tracy. Changing the colours inside a home can update the space tremendously. Colour tastes usually have 7 to 10 year cycles, so usually, when owners buy an existing home, the colours are 'so last season’. "So we changed the whole colour palette of the house, from the dark wood and face brick feel, to a whiter, and lighter feel with a medium grey screed, painting all the timber white, and adding feature wall colours" says Tracy. It is remarkable how this changed the feel of the home.

AT

Floor screed: Concrete by design

All the light fittings were updated to add some funky touches and modernise the space. This can also be a fairly inexpensive thing to do, but the change it can give a space is extraordinary. The floor was redone throughout the home with the addition of a mono-screed. This type of floor is fantastic for low maintenance, it hides dirt well, and wears well in the long term. It also doesn't date, as screeded floors have been around for many years, and people still absolutely love them. You can change the feel with rugs, and throws as one sees fit. "We visited the site approximately every two weeks. Tracy, who is a meticulous architect, was also the principle agent. Our builder, Warren Howard, who got me, understood all I envisaged, built accordingly, changed willingly and sent me photos daily so that I could see how he had met my expectations and Tracy's conceptual drawings. Between the two of

them, they pulled out all the stops to make for a smooth build experience", says Gill. Having wonderfully modern, up-to-date and open-minded clients, who had a keen eye for artwork and furniture, they finished off their home with bright colours that really worked within the spaces. The hard fixtures and finishes where kept neutral and light, allowing fun and bright soft furnishings to create a vibrancy throughout the house. "I had great fun on this project as renovations really push ones creativity. In my opinion, they are often harder than a whole new home in terms of design thinking. You are trying to maximise a space with the minimum amount of costs, and in the end, have a new and exciting feel to the home, that is beyond what was imagined. I think, as a team with the clients, we achieved this" finishes Tracy.

The decor of the home was sourced over the 18 month renovation period and by the time the house was ready, the owners had amassed a treasure trove of unique furniture, extra ordinary soft furnishings, quirky art, creative lighting solutions and accessories to fill the home.

With Gill's passion for art, splashes of colour pop in all the right places throughout the home.

SPICE A stylish restaurant on the beach is a strangely rare find on the North Coast. Thankfully, after five years in Morningside and another five years in Windermere, Russell and Linda Burger finally brought their Indo Continental fusion closer to home. Russell works the front of house and Linda the kitchen, together making a formidable team. Spice offers a relaxed seaside feeling but with elegance and class, reflected in the decor which highlights a touch of luxury. Attention to detail is reflected in the varied menu, from the leather bound cover to the extensive and carefully planned wine-list. The menu offers classical dishes, but with a delightful twist, using only fresh ingredients and splendidly harmonious flavours. Spice is conveniently situated away from the busy centres, yet close enough from Ballito or Umhlanga and Durban. Pop in for a cappuccino with a view or watch the dolphins play over a glass of wine. I'd be surprised if you don't stay for the afternoon. Spice is a delightful find and a delectable way to spend a sunny coastal day.

RE

FLEX

OLOGY Reflexology is not a foot massage. If you have ever booked a Reflexology session and come out feeling disappointed and short changed, then you have. Reflexology is an intensive, pressure point therapy, which changes you, physically and/or emotionally. It is impossible, in my experience, to leave a Reflexology session unaffected. So, Reflexology is not a foot massage.

I

am sure you have read many articles on Reflexology, one where the article tells you how images of Egyptians doing foot treatments on each other have been found, or how one of the forerunners of Reflexology, a Dr Fitzgerald was experimenting on his patients to anaesthetise them before effective anaesthetic was invented. And have you read any articles about the Mother of Reflexology, Eunice Ingham, who took Dr Fitzgerald's work, and perfected the images of the body's systems and mapped that onto the feet? Well I would like to invite you to use your senses and your creativity to know how the Reflexology session goes about transforming you, your body and your lifestyle. The pressure from the therapist thumb or fingers pushes onto over 7,000 nerves in your feet. These nerves of the sensory and peripheral nervous system, sends a message via the spinal cord to your brain. Here the brain interprets how to respond. The brain will then send messages to the organs, the hormonal systems, the central nervous system and other appropriate corresponding areas of the body, and create a response. Sometime the response is to excite and stimulate the body, sometimes it is to become less excited, to bring homeostasis. Balance. Harmony. Imagine you are a busy executive. Your day starts early at 5am. Perhaps by 5:20 you’re exercising, then by 6:20 you’re dressed and on your way to start your work day. Deadlines and meetings punctuate your day. Breakfast is a wheat-grass, lime and ginger smoothie, lunch a well prepared organic micro green salad with avocado, followed by grilled salmon and salad at the evenings meet

42

and greet session at a concert. Or is this your dream food, and in reality its breakfast coffee, packet of chips in the car, and buffet of a thousand unidentifiable snacks for supper? And you have not even granted yourself more than one toilet break? Whichever way your daily routine goes, allowing Reflexology to fill a 50 minute space, once a week, will bring harmony to the chaos, structure to the eating, balance to the sleeping, calmness to the stress. How? The therapist will learn your uniqueness, and then create a Reflexology session to enhance those gaps in your life where more calmness is needed, or fill spaces in you where excitement has been a void. Your therapist will work with you, giving you grains of wisdom instead of boulders of ‘you should’; she will inspire you to look deeper at the cause of the physical problems instead of treating the headache, again, with a painkiller. Breathing gets deeper, sleeping rhythms improves, frequencies of headaches reduce, progression of disease slows down or ceases, inflammation flares are less severe, swellings go down, brain fog lifts, bowels become more regular, information retention becomes crisp. Reflexology is wonderful because it can target and treat to improve many health issues. Sometimes these changes are quick and easy to spot, e.g. “I slept better for the first two days after Reflexology than I have in two years”, to “When I come for Reflexology I can’t tell all the benefits, but when I don’t come all the reminders are there. Sleeplessness, tiredness, aches and pains, irritability, irregular bowel and sinusitis all come back.”

If there is any health concerns it’s always advisable to get GP consent before embarking on any new holistic programme.

I also have a special interest in children who are quirky. Sometimes it’s difficult for the parents and the diagnostic team to place them in a category. The medical term is maybe Asperger or ADHD. I love these children, and their creative innovative ways.

I have a special interest in people living with auto immune disorders. Here our aim (mine and the client's) is to slow down the progression of their disease, lessen the severity of the symptoms they are experiencing in a given week, and hold out to see some improvements in their health.

Here Reflexology is used to calm the brainwaves leading to less tantrums and meltdowns, anxiety is contained by working on the solar plexus, and body spacial awareness is raised by working on both feet simultaneously, enhancing socialisation and communication.

Children, pregnant ladies and people with health issues all require a Reflexologist with extended knowledge.

WENDY WOTHERSPOON Master Reflexologist

Although qualified in Body and Skin Care, Aromatherapy and Reflexology, Wendy's love for holistically restoring health using massage and Reflexology inspires her, and so this is what she mostly practices. A huge amount of her time is spent working with people in executive positions, who find the stress and pressure of daily life reduces the health of their bodies, and Reflexology restores their harmony. In 2000, Wendy opened Pure Rejuvenation and has spent the last 15 years in her own practice. She has also lectured part-time at independent Colleges - training and inspiring the future generation of therapists in all things natural. TEAM INFO

The Bird and Wildlife Department reports to the Fire and Rescue Manager. The team comprises of two seniors and four officers. The team comprises of Musa Gwala (Senior Bird & Wildlife officer), Adrian Naicker (Wildlife Officer), Simphiwe Jili (Wildlife Officer), Indhriasen Govender (Senior Bird & Wildlife Officer), Petronela Mbonambi (Wildlife Officer) and Shivani Sudu (Wildlife Officer). The wildlife officers are sub ordinates of the senior officers in each team. There are two teams that work in 12 hour shifts.

BIRD The LUXE team visited the Bird and Wildlife team at the King Shaka International Airport to chat to them about their approved Bird and Wildlife Management Plan.

M

any questions were raised when the King Shaka International Airport (KSIA), constructed at La Mercy on the North Coast of KwaZulu Natal, officially replaced the Durban International Airport in May 2010. These questions were mainly raised around the wellknown Barn swallows in this area, the current wildlife that exists there, as well as the plans to ensure that all bird and wildlife are protected. With KSIA forming part of the Dube Tradeport, which will additionally consist of a trade zone linked to the airport's cargo terminal, facilities to support the airport such as nearby offices and transit accommodation for tourists, an integrated agricultural export zone and an IT platform, the sheer size of the area to be environmentally managed requires a dedicated and passionate team which led to the formation of the Bird and Wildlife Department. Reporting to the Fire and Rescue Manager of KSIA, this small team consisting of 6 officers, are exceptionally adept to forward thinking and finding solutions to the challenges they face.

The bird and wildlife program was initially started at the old airport in partnership with the Endangered Wildlife Trust. By the time KSIA became operational, the Bird and Wildlife Management Plan was formalised and approved by the Department of Environment. The entire program is based on prevention. "Aircraft invade the space occupied by birds, and as such, it was up to us to find solutions to mitigate the possibility of risk to both aircraft and birds and animals", says Musa Gwala, Senior Bird & Wildlife Officer. This philosophy has ensured a program designed by the Bird and Wildlife team that is under constant review. The team determine why specific birds and wildlife are in the airport area and then go about eliminating food and water sources to discourage the birds and animals from staying in the 15km radius that is covered under the jurisdiction of the airport. From low tech tools such as card board cut-outs of cats and scarecrows to the installation and use of a sophisticated Bird Radar System, the team constantly strives to ensure that the program is

relevant and working well. “Climate changes and the ongoing drought has changed the behaviour or birds and wildlife in recent years and we once again have to adjust our programs to meet new challenges", says Musa. The control of birds in this area is handled through the management of habitat, the Falcon program, the Border collie program, the use of 'bird bangers' and of course the bird radar system (KSIA is the first commercial airport in the world to use this high tech equipment). With the European barn swallows moving into the Mount Moreland area later this year, LUXE will look at the bird program in greater detail in the next issue. Wildlife is controlled by officers who patrol the designated area at least twice per shift. Officers are also on the lookout for snares and indications of illegal poaching and hunting of wild pigs, bushbuck and monkeys. The team work closely with KZN Wildlife in this regard to understand how to correctly identify and remove these snares. All officers have training in snake handling (catch and release) and work together with Ezemvelo Wildlife

Durban is and has been the trendsetter nationally in South Africa. We actively work with other airports to brainstorm, share, improve and initiate successful programs. 46

KZN to dart and relocate other wildlife that enter the area. The Bird and Wildlife department holds workshops with developers (at the conception stage) in the area to discuss any affect their developments may have on the airport. These include the height of buildings, possible glare off roofs and man made ponds and lakes that will attract certain wildlife and birds. Construction around the airport can also attract wildlife, particularly when doing hydro seeding which invites more birds (it is like a bird buffet!). The Bird and Wildlife committee meet once a month with expert associations

such as Birdlife SA, ACSA Management, Aeronautical Engineers, Airline Representative, Pilots, ATNS Air Traffic Controller's, Safety and Environment Officers and Consultants to discuss the program while national meetings are also held regularly where information is shared to ensure the success of the program. The team also keep an eye on international developments, to see if new methods (such as colour laser to irritate birds) could be used locally. The Bird and Wildlife team and Airports Company South Africa certainly has committed itself to the environment and the successful merging of nature and airport.

Surfing - the act of riding a wave. Surfing soothes, its a kind of Zen experience. The ocean is so magnificent, peaceful and awesome that the rest of the world disappears when on a wave.

B

esides offering a wide variety of sport, cultural and academic possibilities which are all recognised with school colours, Crawford College North Coast also offers an area specific sport, surfing. Brant Collins started social surfing at the school in 2009 and entered the surfing league in 2010 where the school team went on to win in 2011, 2012 and 2013. The team was placed fourth at the SA Interschool's in 2011 and are currently the SA School Champions. In 2015, Crawford College North Coast entered an all-girls team that came third. What an amazing accomplishment! Crawford College North Coast offered the LUXE team the opportunity to talk to two of their up and coming young surfers.

Gabriella Lailvaux (age 14) told

us that she started surfing when she was only 6 years old. Although her dad introduced Gabi and her family to the sport, surfing does seem to run in the family, with her grandfather having started Surfing Umhlanga. On asking Gabi why she started surfing,

she laughs “it is not possible to go to the beach with my family without surfing!”. Gabi’s older brother is a lifeguard and her younger brother has now also taken up surfing. She recently received a sponsorship from Roxy to further her surfing career. Having been in this area all her life, Gabi is particularly happy since joining Crawford College North Coast.

“They really care about us and try to help us with our surfing career and they understand when surfing takes us away from school”, says Gabi. She loves the environment at school, her friends, the multiform and all that Crawford College North Coast has to offer. When we asked Gabi if she wants to surf as a career, this enthusiastic, mature young lady said that she would like to further her education after school and was considering a career either as a chiropractor or as a physiotherapist.

Olivia Izzard (age 14) said that she started surfing at the age of 5. She was born into a surfing family with her dad and both sisters surfing. “My life would not be what it is now, if it was not for surfing”, says Olivia. “I am

more confident, meet new people all the time and have the most amazing experiences”. One such experience was the fantastic opportunity to participate in a trip to California in 2015 as part of the SA surfing team. Crawford College North Coast has offered Olivia the chance to grow as a person. She loves the people, the vibe and the closeness they have at school. The understanding from teachers also makes her surfing easier. We asked Olivia about her future plans and this ambitious young lady explained her love for all things beautiful and said she would like to enter into a field of either graphic or interior design.

GABI L.

Gabi and Olivia have become best friends through surfing. They both indicated a definite improvement in female surfing in a sport that is still mostly dominated by men. Although they will at times surf against each other, they are very much a strong tag team in the Interschool League.

A bit more about the KZN SCHOOLS SURFING LEAGUE | kznssl@gmail.com KZN School Surfing, supported by the Ethekwini Surfriders Association, falls under SSA that is in turn governed by SASCOC. The aim of the schools’ league is to develop the sport of competitive surfing at school level. Teams surf every Friday April through June. By the end of the season, the top 10 teams surf off to produce the top surfing school and a ranking of all schools’ from first to last. A floating trophy is awarded to the school with highest scores in the final heat and the top three teams all receive O’neill wet suits, donated by KZN School Surfings generous sponsor who has supported them for the last 4 years. Teachers from the schools get involved at the beach supporting their learners; as well as trying their hand at judging under the very experienced guidance of Cyril Mqadi. Cyril runs the Surfers not street Children programme and children from the programme are included in the league to give them exposure to the contest scene in a fun and safe environment. The kids absolutely love the contest and they can be heard shouting and hooting for their team members from the beach. It teaches kids about being part of a team; how to prepare themselves

50

to surf competitively in a heat under pressure, and by adding the dynamics of a team sport, it is taken to another level as you no longer just worry about yourself. You have to watch how much time you spend in the water and sometimes need to make sacrifices for the team on top of just trying to do your best. Schools enter teams of 5 surfers, only two waves are scored and count toward the tag teams score per heat. Heats are 45 minutes, depending on the conditions. Only one surfer from each team is allowed to enter the water at a time and the rest of the team waits in the designated team box, each surfer catches his or her two scoring rides as quickly as they can and then has to sprint back to TAG the next team member. So it gets tricky if one spends too long in the water and that is when it gets exciting. The KZN Schools league is a productive, organised, sponsored school surfing league that forms part of holistic education and grows the sport. The league has grown from strength to strength and this year they have added an individual event to crown the top boy and top girl surfer as well as best Tag Team.

It doesn’t really matter what type of exercise you are doing, as long as you get up, get out and be generally active by moving in one way or another. You will be doing your body and thus your life a whole lot of good.

T

here is more to being fit than blogging, photographs, motivational posts, Facebook and Instagram. Fitness is just one aspect of health and wellness. We should all be doing at least 30min of exercise (to promote our health and wellbeing and thus physical fitness) every day. So many people have been caught up in the hype of challenges, events, prizes and aesthetics rather than focusing on being generally healthier and moving well and functioning without pain. Don’t get me wrong, a challenge is great, but what next… are you going to stop now because the 12 weeks are done? Did you win and you have now proved your spouse wrong/right and that’s enough? Or is your wedding over, the photo you have always wanted is on your wall and now you can hang up those gym gloves? If you do not find something you can participate in or with consistently over time, you will have major fluctuations in your weight and thus your health.

Here is an example Monday to Friday you may dedicate to your 6am gym session. On Saturday try going for a hike and then surf on Sunday. Can you see what you will achieve by doing this? Firstly you have routine: the 6 am gym session becomes engraved in your habits. This will prep your body for movement (if you gym correctly); it will protect you from injuries and keep you fit, able and healthy. Then you will also have some fun activities which do not require dedication or motivation. These should be fun filled activities you can do with your partner or some friends,

HEALTH & FITNESS

literally overnight. (This is why professional coaches are so important if you want to go the bodybuilding or bikini model route.) Be happy with how you look and feel. What I have learned is that it doesn’t really matter what other people think or comment about you. As long as you are happy with the way you look and feel, you will have all the confidence in the world to enjoy your life free of the fear of being judged! One of the best ways to improve your confidence and self-esteem is to start exercising and see yourself becoming a fitter, stronger, healthier you. Do this consistently over time and you will be the person

FITNESS CRAZE

It is after events such as those above or short spurts of proper dieting and training that help to change your body’s metabolism and ability to digest and use nutrients, that your body becomes most sensitive to stimulants! You have been cutting out additives, preservatives and other toxins to achieve your goal which is fantastic and super healthy, however if you stop this after your goal has been achieved and start indulging in all the foods you have been cutting out the result will always be the same...You will get FAT... The truth is we all need to find some balance. We need exercise without obsession. We need movement and we need health and wellness. There are plenty of ways to get active and stay healthy and fit. A gym is not your only solution; try hiking, surfing, skating, skiing, go skydiving, rafting, ride a motor bike, have sex, go abseiling, mountain climbing, fishing or just get out of the house and take your dog for a walk. Honestly there are thousands of activities that burn huge amounts of calories and if done often and regularly enough, it will keep you fit and firm and way healthier compared to the inactive you.

“My fitness suggestion is to start

doing something you enjoy every day, something consistent, something fun. Be realistic and set yourself some goals. Add this new habit into your daily routine and then plan a variety of activities on your weekends, possibly something completely different to your regular activity.” 52

something you really enjoy or want to start getting into. It is a good idea to commit to something like this because the more realistic this new hobby, the more you will do it and the healthier your body and mind will become. Another shortened example would be as follows: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 5am - 5km run Tuesday and Thursday = 11km bike ride Saturday = 1km swim session Sunday = ride motor bike

and have the body you have always dreamed of. But if you do not commit, take action and let it be known to yourself and others that this is who you are and this is what you will be doing, then your healthier good intentions will not be achieved and you will never unlock and realise what potential you have.

Don’t be fooled by your friend’s stats about their single digit body fat percentage. In all honesty body fat percentages are so inaccurate and unless you are an athlete, you should just use the folds as a means of improvement (I don’t even encourage you to look at the total BF %). Just make sure each fold is improving or if you are happy with the way you look then that each fold remains consistent! Don’t judge yourself negatively against pictures of others who have had themselves photo-shopped, auto corrected, fake tans, spray on 6 packs, lubed up and pumped up. Loads of these people look great for a day or two and then you see them 6 weeks later and they look fat and sluggish. What happened? Either they have an amazing special effects artist/photographer or they dieted so hard and became so sensitive to stimulants that after the show/photo shoot or competition their bodies could not handle a normal diet and so, when regular foods and drinks were introduced again without following a strict plan, their bodies went into shock and they gained a ton of weight,

PERSONAL SHARE PORTFOLIO:

CUSTOMISING YOUR INVESTMENTS Text Gert Smith | Firm PSG Wealth Empangeni | Tel: 035 772 7365

Stockbroking, stockbrokers, shares: words that evoke a variety of imagery depending on your view and knowledge of economic and money markets.

W

all street traders shouting orders, graphs, multiple screens, numbers, data, flashy cars, men in suits or perhaps just a side world that seems complex and intimidating – “I think I’ll just leave my money in the bank thanks”! While the above mental imagery is not misplaced the reality is that the characteristics required for success; hard work, diligence and perseverance; are a little more mundane. As a result the excitement of the initial investment quickly wanes and the prospective long term investor pays less and less attention to the portfolio. Not only does this lead to missed short and medium term opportunities but the true value of a share portfolio remains overlooked and unrealised. Investing in shares is a relatively simple undertaking and regardless of your knowledge or experience, anyone can invest in our local market. For those with a little more discretionary capital and a global inclination, worldwide markets are readily available. However; appropriate and conscientious management of the portfolio is critical and that is where the value of a professional manager cannot

be overstated. The benefits far outweigh the costs of having an experienced portfolio manager look after the investment. PSG Wealth’s discretionary portfolio management service is geared towards high net worth investors who seek the assistance of a qualified and dedicated portfolio manager in constructing and managing their individual share portfolios. This affords exclusive benefits: • Access to specialist investment expertise: Your portfolio manager is approved by PSG Wealth based on qualifications and experience. They have access to PSG Wealth's research and support. • Simplicity and convenience: Monitoring the market can be time-consuming and complex. You can leave this to the professionals. • Active management: Your portfolio manager makes sure your portfolio is suitably structured and diversified. They can buy and sell shares as opportunities or threats arise. • A tailored portfolio: Your share portfolio will meet your unique needs, and complement your overall

financial plan. Local and International shares are available. Attractive benefits: • Performance. Share investments tend to outperform all other asset classes – and inflation – over the long term. By allowing your portfolio manager to carefully choose your share selection, you can target favourable returns. • Tax efficiency. If wrapped within a retirement investment, your share portfolio is exempt from tax on interest, dividends and capital gains. In addition, a portion of your contributions to a retirement annuity can be claimed back from tax. • Safe custody. PSG Wealth applies strict portfolio manager and product provider due diligences, has stringent operational controls and strict technological security. A variety of options: • Invest in local shares via a direct portfolio or within an approved tax wrapper e.g. endowments, retirement annuities, preservation funds and living annuities

Invest in offshore shares directly in hard currency utilising your annual foreign allowance; or through the tax capacity of PSG Wealth (growth will be repatriated in Rands). Offshore endowment wrappers are also available.

Management Style The aim is to identify quality companies with a track record of creating shareholder wealth, with a competent and experienced management team, a strong market position and a good degree of pricing power. Growth prospects of the company are evaluated and compared to current valuation levels before making an investment decision. The discretionary portfolios are continuously reviewed and monitored to identify potential investment opportunities as well as to identify and manage risk; ensuring value for money is received. Changes are only implemented if believed to be beneficial, or if a company’s prospects have deteriorated materially, thus ensuring frequent and unnecessary changes are not made to the portfolio.

NATURAL PARADISE Text Sonja Watson | Photography Barry Bowditch | Location Sheffield Beach Estate

Sheffield Beach Estate is a small boutique estate, situated off the main Sheffield Road towards Christmas Bay. Fantastic sea views and the drama of the coastal flora has made this elegant home an oasis amid a wild space.

55

Each area has been meticulously planned and Christelle speaks with enthusiasm of the beautiful mirrors brought down from Johannesburg to be a feature in the lounge, the original David Gray art from England and the 3-D wall art in the main bedroom.

W

alking towards this house, I’m struck by the silence and the peaceful feeling that surrounds it. It is exactly this feeling that attracted Christelle and Andrew Robinson to this spectacular piece of land, where they have built their dream home. When Christelle initially saw the 180-degree sea view and felt the quiet peace that came with this estate, she immediately phoned her husband and told him that she has found the piece of paradise they were looking for. It was the start of their journey to permanently living on the North Coast. Originally from England, Andrew has been in South Africa for the past 30 years. Christelle was born in Pretoria, lived in Cape Town and then returned to Johannesburg before their move to the KwaZulu Natal North Coast four years ago. Residing in Johannesburg at the time, Andrew and Christelle decided to build the home they planned to retire in and therefore they knew they had to put together an extraordinary team to pull it off. Designing the home was a year long process and the build took 18 months, during which time Christelle travelled down monthly to check on progress. She speaks highly of the architect, Chantel Damant of Impact Architecture, their builder, Herman Moll of Triple Seven and project manager Dale Dennis from Ground Floor Interiors, with whom she worked very closely with to realise the vision for their home. She was so detailed in her planning that she stipulated that the passages have to be wide enough to walk in while wheeling a suitcase on either side of you.

The carefully planned and masterfully equipped movie room leads into Andrew’s private library where he loves to spend hours reading. 56

Layering and mixing of fabrics, wallpapers, flooring and wall cladding all provide sumptuous textures and create a feast for the eyes. The ability to consistently see the natural landscape through windows or sliding doors or reflected in mirrors ensures a feeling of tranquillity.

Christelle has always known exactly what she loves and wants and being trained as an interior decorator, she has a great eye for detail and a vision of exactly how an area must look and feel, right down to the finest detail. Walking through their spectacular home, she has a story to tell about almost every beautiful piece of furniture and how she planned the look of every room. Arriving at their home, which they share with their much loved animals, one can immediately sense that lovers of nature live here. This is confirmed when you enter through a jungle of beautiful palms and trees and meander along a wooden walkway past a hidden corner with loungers, where I can already see myself relaxing with a cup of tea and a book on a lazy afternoon. The splash pool is surrounded by more lush, tropical plants and privately hidden in this weather resistant courtyard. This is where they can easily entertain, relax

or eat outside, but be protected from the weather coming off the sea. The welcoming courtyard is prolific and cosy, but with the thoughtful use of mirrors, provides a feeling of spaciousness. The house is filled with beautiful and unique furniture and artistic pieces. Wormy Chestnut wooden floors were brought in from Cape Town to create a warm, soft and perfectly engineered welcome to the house. My favourite area is the front where deep balconies and verandas are filled with comfortable, tasteful furnishings, more beautiful plants and a spectacular pond; home to Terence the turtle and goldfish. Christelle talks about her plants with much the same fondness as she does of her animals. Her Toad Tree didn’t do well after moving it and she talked to it for a whole year! Finally it rewarded her with flowers and now she finally knows it’s happy. I could see it was happy, as was every other living organism in this beautiful space.

All the beautifully decorated rooms, which spill onto their own outer area, have been designed to flow from the house, providing a feeling of privacy. Each room also has a lovely view onto the lush garden and each angle is a picture worth taking.

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.” John Lubbock

THE MIGRATION TREND TOWARDS

BLYTHEDALE The demand for homes in the soughtafter, perfectly positioned region continues to increase the number of migrations northwards as we witness constant development and infrastructural enhancements along the picturesque coastline North of Durban. urban has a variety of attractions, including uShaka Marine World, Kingsmead Cricket Stadium, Suncoast Casino, Moses Mabhida Stadium, Gateway Theatre of Shopping, Sibaya Casino and Entertainment World, King Shaka Airport and now, Blythedale Coastal Resort. With the vast spread of attractions, pleasant climate all year-round and investment opportunities in Durban, it’s easy to understand why this fundamental north coast node attracts property investors and residential property buyers not only from KZN but also from Bloemfontein, Gauteng, the Cape and beyond our borders. People are migrating to the north coast as growth and development creates additional opportunities for employment. Blythedale Coastal Resort, located in the prime north coast of KZN, is a community based development affecting approximately 4,000 people making up some 687 families. As an eminent resort development positioned as a mixed use fully integrated development, Blythedale is set to create 10,000 permanent jobs and 110,000 construction jobs over the next 10 years. The ever emerging King Shaka International Airport is expected to become the city centre of Durban with easy access by road, rail and air. The Aerotropolis will be an attractive setting for business and tourist travellers, with families able to reside within a neighbouring estate with good security making life at Blythedale the preferred choice. Along with this, non-stop advances in technology are facilitating an increase in work-from-home buyers. King Shaka is expected to grow from 7.5 million passengers to 45 million passengers over the next 40 years with 100,000 tons of cargo in today’s terms growing to 2,000,000 tons over the same period. The Blythedale development site is midway between Durban Harbour and Richard’s Bay Harbour. Durban Harbour is the world’s fifth largest container terminal, and also has Africa’s busiest harbour volume. Richard’s Bay Harbour is the world’s biggest dedicated coal terminal. Durban is also the 7th best destination to visit with large numbers of foreigners recently visiting the Indaba (Africa’s top travel show) and the world renowned Commonwealth Games to take place in 2020 are a just few reasons for the ongoing success of the region.

PASSIONATE OLD TOWN ITALY Old Town Italy is so much more than a restaurant. It is truly an experience. Offering a bakery, delicatessen, nose to tail butchery, flowers, groceries, gifts, gelato, cheeses, imported Italian wines and an eatery, it is the world of old Italy in one generous space. If you visit for a meal at the restaurant, you will enjoy friendly service and fresh food that tastes like its been made at home. Why not pop in for a breakfast – try the il bosco rosso (their take on eggs benedict, with the most wonderful hollandaise sauce, bacon, avo and bread of your choice) or something with their signature baked beans. Alternatively enjoy a fresh artisanal pastry over a steaming cup of their exclusive La Dolce Vita coffee (it’s very good coffee!). If you decide to buy some groceries, there will always be someone on hand to help you pack and weigh your fruit and vegetables. While browsing the produce pick up a healthy juice pressed right there in the shop and presented in a returnable glass bottle. At Old Town Italy, quality is held in high regard. Everything that is on offer, from the honey to the herbs, is of an excellent standard. Like Italy itself, Old Town Italy is a place you can visit over and over without losing interest. There is always something new on offer and something delicious to try.

ronzes are Forever…now there’s a statement that could sound a tad cliché or bumper sticker-ish - one of those sentences where it feels like one could substitute the word bronze for love, or in my case, chocolate. But it turns out bronze, unlike love (well in most cases anyway) and certainly chocolate (that which is in a hundred meter circumference of my person), is a tangible material that does indeed last through the ages. Bronze has been hugely significant to any culture through the eons that has encountered it. It has been one of the most innovative alloys of mankind. This wonderful golden, chocolate coloured stuff has been used for trade and currency; it has been fashioned into armour, war weapons, tools and thankfully artworks. The earliest tin-alloy bronze items found, date to the late 4th millennium BCE in the area that is now known as Iran and Iraq.

They (‘they’ being those clever historians and archaeologists of old) suggest that the first bronze art statue of the world is the “Dancing Girl”. She was found in Pakistan. This piece dates back to 2500 BCE. So I have to agree, bronzes do appear to be forever - which makes for jolly good investment art in our modern day. Ancient arts of this nature have always captured my attention in a kind of gross fascination of the most elegant variety. Incidentally the making of chocolate is also a most noteworthy process. Right from collecting cocoa fruits in the jungle to extracting their beans, through the entire process to letting a square of that brown poetry dissolve on one’s tongue. But that is a story for another day. Being married to a sculptor myself, I have been fortunate indeed to be exposed to the entire process of this ancient art form. Another plus is that I have got to know artist, foundry owner and patineur extraordinaire, Michael Cañadas. Michael owns Bronze Art Africa, a bronze foundry in White River just outside Nelspruit. He’s an extraordinary person. And I am not shallowly referring to his gorgeous, dark, wolverine looks – which believe me is the first thing you’ll notice. No, I’m referring to his whole persona and what he does. He’s patient for one and prefers the wings to centre stage. His eyes glint when he speaks about his passion for art in bronze. Quietly spoken yet containing a delightful sense of humour, it is very obvious that Michael loves what he does. Here is a person who thinks with his head, hands and heart. Nothing, it appears, is too heavy, difficult or impossible.

He who works with his hands is a labourer. He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman. He who works with his hands, his head and his heart is an artist.

“Sculpture occupies real space like we do. You walk around it and relate to it almost as another person or object.” Chuck Close

Marke Meyer, one of the sculptors that Michael casts for, is very quick to explain that Michael is a genius, especially when it comes to balancing and working out the engineering challenges of his suspended bronzes. “He’s flippin’ fearless”, Marke laughs, “and I can wholeheartedly trust my artworks with him.” Michael smiles at that and sips his coffee. ‘Deadlines’, his coffee cup states, “amuse me”. And I have no doubt that they do.

An opportunity arose to start his own business and he has never looked back. Michael casts, not only for himself but for well over 350 sculptors. He offers employment for thirty people at his foundry. His own art pieces are in many collections all over the world. He has cast pieces ranging in size from miniatures to enormous state sculptures – including Cobus Hattingh’s one of Madiba on Naval Hill in Bloemfontein.

Earlier in his career Michael finished a series of diplomas in wildlife capture and management as well as a degree in nature conservation. In 1998 he started his apprenticeship at an art foundry and started studying the alchemy of bronze in 2000.

Michael is a busy man, but he takes the time to show us around his foundry every time we find ourselves there. And like chocolate, I simply never get tired of it.

I cornered Michael and asked him some specific questions I thought were of interest:

Which came first – being an artist or the foundry?

Oh definitely the Foundry. To tell you the truth, when I left school I had no other thing in mind other than my road cycling career. I was fortunate to have done really well with cycling at school and achieved provincial colours and was Captain etc. So I was out training daily, until my Mom suggested I get a half day job. Thankfully this turned out to be with sculptor, Arend Eloff at his foundry. The sculpture happened naturally. A guy came into the Foundry wanting a kudu cast in bronze. Arend was too busy – so I said I would give it a go. I knew I understood animals and their anatomy. Fortunately the guy liked the kudu and bought it – and I was now an artist! When Arend decided to move to Keimoes he was going to close the foundry down. A friend helped me with a loan and in 2007 I bought the business. There was something that captivated me with the bronzing process. Bronze is an unbelievable material to work with. I have worked with steel and other metals but there’s something very special about bronze, it’s a superior material.

What inspires you to create your next piece of sculpture?

I have tons of ideas in my head all the time. It’s always just a matter of having enough time to make them a reality. My interest lies in sculpting animals – this comes more naturally to me than figurative work. Left to my own, I enjoy putting a slightly quirky twist on my pieces – take “Bushveld Express” for an example. My time is spent working in the foundry and the in-between times I am predominantly working on commissions for people. At the moment I’m working on a life-size Buffalo bust. I really enjoy the size and the fact that it’s a bust – that’s my thing. I am also working on a life-size Marshal eagle catching a newborn impala. It’s also a commission and really cool to do.

Do you have any of your own or other Artists work in your home?

None of my own. Being in the foundry I am in a position to swap work which is really great. We have a few Tienie Pritchard sculptures and some Bernie van der Vyver – now there’s an incredible wildlife sculptor that I admire. We have some Marke Meyer sculptures that are being cast for our home to. We also have some really beautiful crazy-expressive landscape paintings by Branko Dimitrov and a couple of Mike Parson’s oils too, I love their work.

What would you do if you didn’t sculpt?

I’d be on my bike in a flash! I still love cycling. It’s like meditation to me. I’m out as often as I can after the foundry on weekdays and on weekends I go for some great trails around this area with a group of about twenty other guys.

Michael, now the big question – do you like chocolate? That is so random….(laughs) I prefer salty things like biltong. (sigh) …just goes to show that nobody’s perfect.

THE PROCESS

T

here are a number of distinct casting processes involved in creating the final artwork. I will give you a hint of this incredible process but if you ever get the opportunity to visit a foundry, grab it with both hands as it is a symphony of extreme heat, beauty, noise and fire. The artists’ initial artwork is usually fashioned in non-drying oil based clay, much like your child’s Plasticine. The artist or the foundry then make a mould: Sticky pink silicone - a rubber-like material, is carefully pasted onto the entire sculpture in a number of layers. This sets quickly. ‘Seams’ are made to keep intricate sections both apart and together. Where necessary, complicated pieces are cut off the artwork and moulds are made separately of these only to be welded back together later in the process. A rigid, fibre-glass mould is then made over the top of the rubber to keep it all together like an outside skeleton. Think crustacean. The mould is then taken apart and the original clay piece removed. The mould is cleaned, trimmed and put back together. It is literally tightened with nuts and bolts to keep the rubber in place.

'Bushveld Express'

Hot wax is poured into the mould, swished around and the excess emptied to create an exact hollow replica of the original artwork. The mould is then removed to expose the wax piece that looks much like an unwrapped chocolate Lindt bunny. Sprues, also made out of wax, are then added at specific spots all around the piece. Sprue is the posh word for thin tunnels which the molten bronze will eventually be poured down and can ‘breath’ through.

Michael in the foundry The boiling liquid bronze at 1200 degrees is poured from a Shakespearean looking cauldron down through the sprues and into the piece. Michael’s bronze is made from 95% copper, 4% silicon and 1% manganese. After the bronze has cooled, the external ceramic is painstakingly chipped away revealing the raw bronze sculpture. Where necessary, different sections are then re-welded together to complete the piece in its entirety. Then comes the patina. This is the colouring of the surface of the bronze using chemicals. I simply have to digress from my shortened format here for a second but bear with me…

“I love the colour of bronze”, I remember saying to Michael rather smugly, on my maiden voyage to the foundry, picking up a finished piece in the Gallery section of the foundry; “it reminds me of the colour of chocolate.” But in four words Michael quietly blows my smugness to smithereens. “Bronze isn’t dark brown”. You see Michael is a patineur of note. He studied the art in the USA under top patineur Patrick Kippe. The raw colour of fresh bronze is actually a bright, shiny, yellow-gold. And not that deep, chocolate metallic colour we are traditionally accustomed to.

Michael with Buffalo bust in clay state The wax sculpture is then covered in another hard, dry crustacean shell using a ceramic slurry made up of liquid silica to bind. It is coated in this gooey pale mix and hung out to dry on racks. The wax is then melted out leaving just the pale alien outer shell with the various sprues leading in and out of it.

To apply the patina, Michael reheats the bronze using a blowtorch at a temperature of over 200 degrees Fahrenheit. He then applies his chosen chemical with a spray bottle and the different chemicals react differently with the bronze. One of the most common patinas is potash (Liver of Sulfur) which results in our traditional goldenbrowns to darker chocolate colours. Other chemicals include Ferric Nitrate which makes golds, browns and reds. The unusual and beautiful greens and blues are concocted using Cupric Nitrate. Once the patina is complete and cooled, coats of wax are then applied with much polishing, huffing and buffing to reveal the exquisite work as it was first conceptualized by the artist. It’s pure poetry. 65

Capital Gains Tax & Property Text Simon Watson | Firm Cox Yeats Attorneys | T: 031 536 8530 | E: swatson@coxyeats.co.za

I

n the previous edition of LUXE we summarised ways in which property can be owned. This article looks at tax considerations, specifically capital gains tax (CGT).

A home is a capital asset. CGT is relevant to the purchase and sale of capital assets.

In addition to being levied a lower CTG rate, individuals qualify for an exemption on the first R2 million representing a capital gain received from the disposal of a primary residence. This exemption is not available to companies and trusts.

CGT forms part of income tax and is levied on a portion of the income received from the sale of a home if the sale price exceeds the base cost. The base cost is essentially the initial cost of acquiring the home plus qualifying expenses spent on it before it is sold. A basic illustration of the principle is summarised below.

SOLD FOR:

LESS BASE COST:

From an estate planning perspective a disadvantage of owning property in the name of an individual is that when the individual dies the property will be deemed to have been disposed. In sizeable estates this can potentially trigger CGT.

CGT CALC. ON:

Not all of a capital gain is subject to income tax. For natural persons 40% of the capital gain is included in the individual’s taxable income. This percentage is referred to as the ‘inclusion rate’ and it results in an effective CGT rate of 16.4% for individuals. In the above example, the property is owned by an individual and a capital gain of R1 Million is assumed. Disregarding the exemption relating to a primary residence explained below, with a 40% inclusion rate R400 000 of the capital gain will be subject to income tax. If the individual’s income tax rate is 41% the CGT payable will be R164 000. Capital gain Inclusion rate at 40% Income tax rate 41% 164 000 / 1 000 000 Effective CGT rate

= R1 000 000 = R400 000 of capital gain taxed = R164 000 tax due on capital gain = 16.4% = 16.4%

For trusts and companies in 2016 the inclusion rate is 80%. Companies are taxed at 28% and trusts are taxed at 41% which results in an effective CGT rate of 22.4% for companies and 32.8% for trusts. In the above example if the property had been owned by a company R224 000 in CGT would have applied and had it been owned by a trust the CGT would be R328 000.

The table below summarises what has been described above. Individual

From a CGT perspective it is advantageous to own a primary residence in the name of an individual. There may be circumstances, such as when a second property is purchased which warrant, despite higher CGT rates being applicable, the use of a company or a trust.

EDUC

LIFESTYLE We are so fortunate to live in a time where educating your children from home has become a much more popular decision with people from all walks of life for an array of different reasons and that there are many different curriculums to choose from, supporting each unique learning style.

I

normally get “Wow, you are brave!” when I share the news that we have decided to homeschool our kids. I know that sometime they really want to say “Wow, are you crazy, woman?” Or maybe it’s just that I have said that to myself a few times! It was a brave and bold step to take, but so far down our short journey into homeschooling we have not looked back once.

groups organizing all sorts of activities and get togethers. It is a challenge in our house to have a quiet week, but what I do love is that we do it in our own time and with our own rhythm. And this is where I have seen my children blossom. Amongst our busy mornings and full afternoons I see their love of learning returning and their independence developing and growing.

I say it is a short journey, but it really isn’t. It’s been many years of research, delving and questioning that lead our family to this point. Pretty much the same process all parents go through choosing a school for their children. There are no easy decisions when it comes to the education of our kids. And these are the hard questions – what is the best decisions when it comes to our children’s whole education?

Here are some common questions addressed:

Our decision to embark on this journey was not a knee jerk reaction to school, and it wasn’t even that we were particularly unhappy on that path. We just wanted a different life with our kids and the route seemed to suit our family best, for the time being. Who knows, maybe this will change. Nothing is cast in stone and nothing has to be. From Durban all the way up the coast, there are many families homeschooling and there are active

What about socializing and sport? (The most common one!) Many people have misconceptions about socialization and homeschooling and think that homeschooled kids are isolated and not socially skilled. Research has shown the opposite to be true. They spend more time out in the real world and are well adjusted socially as a result of mixing with different ages. They show confidence from an early age, in relating to younger and older people as they are not confined to mostly their same age peer group, which is not a realistic situation and reflects nowhere in life other than in school. Most of the sports are offered at clubs in the area including swimming, hockey, tennis, golf, life

saving, gymnastics, rugby, soccer, dancing, horse riding, martial arts and loads more, including indoor sports. Is it legal? Yes it is. Homeschooling was incorporated into the South African Schools act in 1996. What curriculum do you follow? There are so many to choose from and it is tricky to make a decision. The internet is a good place to start and there are curriculum expos in all the major cities annually. It is also helpful to contact a consultant such as Martie du Plessis who can guide families in the process. See www.dynamislearning.co.za. Read Shirley Erwee’s books Homeschooling: The Primary Years and Homeschooling High School for lots of information on South African Homeschooling. How do you manage with the different ages? It can be tricky, but your time is your own, so find a way that works for you as a family. No two families do it the same way, but there are moms who manage with many kids of all ages. Children also learn to adapt to the circumstances and you also learn to handle it better.

ATION CHOICES

There is no end to education. It is not that you read a book, pass an examination, and finish with education. The whole of life, from the moment you are born to the moment you die, is a process of learning.” Jiddu Krishnamurti

Do I need to be qualified to homeschool? No. According to extensive research, the qualifications of the homeschooling parent have no relation to the child’s academic performance. How do I know if my children are learning? Children are always learning and if you are involved in the process, you as the parent will know if they are. If you are unsure, a lot of the curriculum’s offer assessments. What if I can’t teach them something they need to earn? Most curriculum’s offer parent/teacher manuals and some even DVD’s. Otherwise you can get a tutor. Will my child be able to go to college or university? Your child will have to meet the requirements of the institution you want to apply to, just as the school child will have to. A growing amount of homeschoolers are accepted in universities, because they are self disciplined and motivated and generally perform well. Homeschoolers can apply with their NSC, Cambridge or GED qualification.

How much time does it take? Generally at primary level 2-3 hours per day at most and high school 3-4 hours per day and with no homework! Can I work and homeschool my children? Yes! Many homeschooling moms have careers they follow from home, their own businesses or part time jobs. Some dads also partake. It really depends on your family set up, your kids ages and needs etc. It certainly is done by many families. What if my child wants to go back to school? It is a child’s constitutional right to be accepted in a public school between 7-15 with no requirements of assessments. Private schools of course have their own requirements, but generally homeschoolers fare well having had one-on-one tuition. I am not very organized. Will I be able to homeschool successfully? Everyone has their unique challenges but generally determination and commitment override any obstacles.
