T
he element of fire is a light, active element and can be both creative and destructive. Fire is the transformer, converting the energy of other objects into new forms: heat, light, ash and smoke. Much the same as the development of our coastal corridor. Several stories in this issue focus on or refer to the massive growth of this area and how investors, developers and the local community, are transforming and rejuvenating land that has traditionally been used for sugar cane farming. Attending the recent launch of the R1.3 billion development, Umhlanga Arch, at a glittering event held at the Oyster Box Hotel, it was astonishing and heartening to see the scale of investor confidence in our region. Umhlanga Arch is a premier mixed-use development comprising of upmarket offices, first-class retail, hotel and luxury apartments - a true live-workplay ethos packaged in awe inspiring architecture. Strong, bold and passionate artists feature in our Art Scene feature. As Barbie Meyer says, 'artists, across the genres, seem to have fire in them'. How relevant to both Sarah Danes Jarett and Everett Duarte. In our fashion editorial 'After Dark', we showcase a handful of luxurious evening dresses. The shoot was put together in a fairly short space of time and we are
EDITOR very grateful to everyone involved who all guaranteed a wonderfully glamorous shoot. Our new guest contributor, Chris Reid from the International Trend Institute, shared the overall trends to look out for in 2017. We are excited to have him on board and look forward to future trend interpretations. As well as this fine array of features, we have all our usual contributors, who took on the fire theme with gusto and applied it to their writing. Getaways to the locally luxurious Fairmont Zimbali Resort and slightly further afield at Tala Private Game Reserve, helped the LUXE team transition beautifully relaxed into 2017. Nothing like a bit of spoiling to get the creative juices flowing! And talking about spoiling, enter one or both of our featured competitions - win a fantastic wine hamper or a guided 'fat biking' trip and lunch at Prince's Grant Estate. Raise your face to the heat of the sun and connect with that fire to feel your own immense power.

WINES For many, wine is still seen as a luxury product, and customers tend to stick to the brands they already know and buy. Despite this, wine culture is continually growing in the country. With over 80% of the local wine-drinking market still untapped, it is certainly one with massive potential and significant room for new and emerging brands to make themselves known.
T
his grouping of self-made winepreneurs, who collectively possess over 125 years’ experience and 13 of whom are powerful and visionary women on the rise, launched under the name of TREASURE CHEST in November 2016. Plotting a new path to transformation in the 360-year-old wine and agricultural sector, where less than 2% of the industry is black-owned, the Treasure Chest collective are certainly a force to be reckoned with. Their perseverance, determination and strong desire to work
collectively to penetrate the untransformed wine industry and be more active in the mainstream South African economy is a prime example for future entrepreneurs who might be struggling to enter other industries in South Africa. Treasure Chest Wines are world-class wines by any measure, having been the first on American Airways, on the shelves of leading retailers, winners of numerous international awards and now exporting collectively to over 25 countries, the future looks bright for this pioneering wine brand.
with LUXE & TREASURE CHEST Simply like the LUXE Media Group Facebook page before the end of May 2017 and you will stand in line to win a selection of award winning wines by some of the Treasure Chest Wineries
Aptly called “Treasure Chest”, the brand name speaks to the inherent value of the unique array of flavours, aromas and blends, including varietals that are some of South Africa’s best kept secrets. Each wine carries a unique South African essence and story, personal to its creator, developer and owner. The Treasure Chest collective includes award winning and internationally sought after varietals and vintages from more than 11 different wine regions in the Western Cape, each with its unique nose and taste characteristics. The brand collectively encapsulates a perfect bouquet of South African wines. As the principal Malcolm Green says: “The Treasure Chest as a collective of black owned wine brands, will break new ground in the country. The group features a diverse mix of estates and brands from eleven different wine-growing regions in the Western Cape all united by a common purpose. The Treasure Chest will provide a platform for their wines to compete with other brands on shelves and menus across South Africa. The aim is to build on the amazing wine-making heritage in the country and introduce customers to a new generation of South African wine.”

t is the responsibility of Developers, Directors of Home Owners’ Associations and Estate Managers to create, maintain and improve on the safety measures and procedures within gated estates, it is a role, which requires constant focus and dedication. There is no place for any form of complacency or apathy. It is critical that fences, walls and alarm systems are constantly monitored and tested. It is essential these areas are kept free from vegetation. It is important that camera and recording equipment and lighting are checked and maintained and that good systems are put in place for all checks and balances. The services of an effective security firm whose employees have been properly trained and who are backed up by an armed reaction unit if needed is non negotiable for many residents and potential investors. Secure estates should have perimeter fences or walls, security coverage systems, procedures and equipment checked periodically by a professional to ensure that they are not only spending security budgets effectively, but that what they have is relative, compliant and in working order. Since a significant portion of every home owners’ levy is spent on security, it is important at the AGM’s of home owners’ associations that Directors provide home owners with a comprehensive report on the community’s security including what was spent over the previous year and what is budgeted for the coming year. This goes a long way in assuring home owners that they are in good hands and their money is being well spent. It is also important to keep abreast of new regulations. For example, legislation on electric fences. It is important that the installers and maintainers of electric fences are certified and have been accredited in terms of the regulations. After all, it is a requirement to get certificates of compliance (COC) for electrical and plumbing work in our homes and the electric fence is
10
equally important. If estates do not comply with the new regulations, they may run the risk of insurance claims being rejected and (ironically) being held liable for injury from a fence. COC’s should be issued for an electric fence as long as the fence complies with the relevant regulation at the time it was installed. If an electric fence has been added to or altered, a new COC is required.
Demand for a secure and safe living space is arguably the most important force behind the growth in gated estates. The amount budgeted on security is, for the majority of Home Owners’ Associations, one of the biggest expenses!
In any event a detailed annual inspection of the fence by a qualified professional and the issue of a COC is good practice and this should be made available to all home owners within estates. Checklist for Estate Security: • HOA directors and Estate manager with experience • Up to date security asset register • Quality electric fencing inspected daily (integrity, voltage, alarm) • Annual inspection of all security equipment by a professional • Reputable security company, preferably armed • Regular safety reports provided • Efficient and effective entry and exit system
The precondition to freedom is security.” Rand Beers
Most gated estates on the North Coast have an excellent track record on security. It is why many people from all over South Africa and beyond choose to live in them. This benefits not only estate residents, but also investment in the area in general. On this note Wild Geese Developments would like to acknowledge and thank all persons who are responsible for this, particularly the security companies of which there are a number with deserved excellent reputations. Special mention goes out to Frank Labidi from IPPS Security, over the years we have been witness to Frank’s relentless dedication to the safety of the North Coast community.

have experienced the most amazing beauty in my life. I have had blessings in abundance, and in the same breath I have had huge disappointments. I have experienced amazing happiness and the most devastating sadness. I have gained and I have lost, but through it all I have lived! “Each of us is born with a box of matches inside us but we can't strike them all by ourselves.” Laura Esquivel, Like Water for Chocolate
How do we survive life? One sure way to fuel the fire of life is to live in the moment. The Spanish painter Salvador Dali had a unique way of savouring the moment. When he was bored with life, he would go into his garden. He would pick the most perfect peach. He would hold it in his hand to admire the golden sun warmed skin. He would sniff it and the warm perfume would fill his senses. Then he would take a single bite. His mouth would be filled with the luscious juice. He would savour the moment. He would then spit out the mouthful and throw the peach away. According to him, focusing on the moment, being present and alert with all his senses made it the perfect moment. Being present in the moments of your life, experiencing it with all your senses will ground you. It will fuel the fire within. I believe the one way to capture the moment is to have no regrets. In a way regrets are like wanting the peach that you have thrown away. It is gone, but you are filled with remorse. Regret smothers the fire within; it holds you back in the past when you should be moving forward. Bronnie Ware, a nurse, has recorded the most common regrets of the dying. The top five regrets of dying patients were: 1. I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me. 2. I wish I hadn't worked so hard. 3. I wish I had the courage to express my feelings. 4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends. 5. I wish that I had let myself be happier. 12

We all do things we wish we hadn’t. Use the matches within to strike the fire. Have the courage to live your life true to yourself, stay in touch with friends and family, and have the courage to express your feelings. Be happy. Do it now! “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humour, and some style.” Maya Angelou
In his book “Screw It, Let’s Do It”, Richard Branson tells the story of his grandmother who lived life to the full. At the age of 89 she became the oldest person in Britain to pass the advanced Latin American ballroom dancing exam. She was 90 when she became the oldest person to hit a hole in one at golf. Shortly before her death at age 99 she went on a cruise around the world. She laughed about it when she was left behind in Jamaica wearing only her swimming costume. Her attitude was that you’ve only got one go in life, so you should make the most of it.

“As you’re reading this, your life’s getting shorter. It’s ticking away. I’m not saying this to frighten you. Or even scare you. Though it may. I’m saying this to awaken you. To inspire you. To rise you out of your deep slumber. To really know you won’t live forever. To share your unique gifts. To ignite your great inner fire. To ignite your great inner strength. To ignite your great inner light. To shine. To motivate. Yourself and others. To love. Yourself and others. To paint. To write. To teach. To innovate. To sing. To dance. To care. To feel. To listen. To learn. To laugh. The clock is ticking. The world needs you. Make your move.” Mike Litman
Surviving life is for the meek. Living life is for the brave. Do not let the hero in your soul perish. Rest if you must. The world needs people that are alive, not merely surviving. Therefore do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark.
Passion is the energy that keeps us going, that keeps us filled with meaning, and happiness, and excitement, and anticipation. Passion is a burning fire which drives you to accomplish anything you set your mind to, and experiencing work and life to the fullest extent possible. Ultimately, passion is the driving force behind success and happiness that allows us all to live better lives. Your passion is the reason you wake up in the morning, and just the thought of it can keep you up late with excitement. Passion can also be a quieter feeling of satisfaction, knowing you are living your life on your own terms. “We each have a special something we can get only at a special time of our life. Like a small flame. A careful, fortunate few cherish that flame, nurture it, hold it as a torch to light their way. But once that flame goes out, it’s gone forever.” Haruki Murakami
Cherish your flame, nurture it by slowing down and embracing your own uniqueness. Cultivate your confidence and push past your fears. Change the story of your life and work on an ending with no or little regrets. Focus on fun.

THE IGHTEENTH
@ PRINCE’S GRANT
As the only permissible apartment development within Prince's Grant Golf Estate, local developer Herman Grobler's vision of integrating a lock up and go sectional title development into the natural surrounds has been brought to life.
O
verlooking the Prince's Grant Golf Estate's 18th fairway, the name of the development is certainly a good fit. What the name doesn't infer is the peace and tranquillity of the green surroundings. With spectacular seaviews to the right/south, indigenous coastal forest in front and undulating sugar cane fields to the left, the eye constantly has something to feast upon.
Having lived on the estate for the last 6 years, Herman is intimately aware of its appeal. “A mere 20 minutes from
the bustling Ballito, Prince's Grant offers both residents and holiday makers the ideal getaway with quality relaxation, says Herman. The estate's golf course has constantly been ranked as one of the top courses in the country
and there are various other amenities including tennis and squash courts, a number of swimming pools, braai areas and of course beach access to a striking stretch of coastline - the ideal setting for balancing life, work and play. The first phase of The Eighteenth is comprised of 12 two bedroomed units and 3 bedroomed loft apartments, with an assortment of layouts to select from. Modern and contemporary, clean lines abound and the clever use of space guarantees that the apartments are all spacious and filled with light. Polished concrete flooring, white cabinetry and unusual concrete screeded feature walls create an easy living feel throughout. 15

I love the look of raw, unfinished concrete and wanted to incorporate that look into the interior design of the apartments. The result is a stylishly intertwined combination of beautiful raw, natural elements paired with high-end fittings and finishes.
For those wishing to let out their apartment, the low maintenance, considered design for coastal living and the easy lock-up-and-go setup is a great benefit. The totally separate, extra long garage (and extra wide garage door) can be used to store toys such as kayaks, bikes, golf carts, etc. and can easily accommodate larger vehicle. Each unit has a semi-private, covered patio with a built-in braai, perfect for entertaining. 16
The exposed trusses in the loft apartments offer an air of openness and space, while the sliding doors on the front and rear allow the outside in. For the kids and those young at heart, the development is conveniently adjacent to one of the estate's activity centre's which includes a swimming pool, tennis courts, a jungle gym and trampoline. Stylish and practical, this development epitomises worry free living for all ages.

SIZZLING PROPERTY TRENDS Text Carol Reynolds
|
Firm Pam Golding Properties
|
T: 031 573 6000
|
A Given that the element for this edition of LUXE is “fire”, I thought it would be fitting to explore the “hot” spots and property trends that will set the stage for 2017. 18
E: carol.reynolds@pamgolding.co.za
s a starting point, we anticipate that 2017 will see the continuation of a number of prevailing trends.
These include: • the desire among first time buyers to acquire a foothold on the property ladder and own their own homes; • an ongoing trend towards investment in mixed-use developments mainly in metropolitan hubs; • a preference for secure estate living and sectional title complexes as opposed to freehold; • the transition to ‘green’ and sustainable living as pricing pressures resulting from the prolonged drought and rising electricity tariffs will see a continued shift to energy and water efficiency; • the importance of understanding the dynamics of the housing market when making a sound investment decision. These include factors such as the ongoing migration of people, supply of new housing units and lifestyle trends.
•
home staging as an option for sellers seeking faster sales turnaround times as sellers take cognisance of the need to make their homes more presentable to the buyer pool.
In addition to these trends, we expect certain metros and suburbs to continue performing well in 2017, despite subdued economic conditions. The three most notable regions worth investigating are KwaZulu Natal, the Western Cape and Gauteng. The Western Cape has seen an influx of buyers “semigrating” from all over the country since 2013. Factors fuelling movement to the Cape include the appeal of a proven record of service delivery, access to excellent schooling and the attractive lifestyle. House price inflation averaged 11.9% in 2016, nearly 5% ahead of the second strongest performer, namely, KwaZulu Natal. However, we predict that 2017 will see this inflation slowing down in the Cape, whereas KZN will continue its upward trend.
The most buoyant nodes in the Cape include the Atlantic Seaboard and the CBD. Given the severely constrained supply on the Atlantic Seaboard, demand has been unprecedented, driving price upwards. The result of this pent-up demand is that, whereas in the past a sale in excess of R100 000 per square meter was a rarity; we are now regularly seeing prices exceeding this benchmark in Clifton and the V&A Waterfront. For example, sea-facing presidential apartments at the landmark Aurum luxury development in Bantry Bay are selling at prices from R110 000 to as much as R140 000 per square meter. The CBD has also become extremely popular, with prices fetching as much as R55 000 per square meter for apartments in wellpositioned, sophisticated developments.
Housing demand appears to be particularly buoyant along the northern KZN coastline, with buyers showing a strong preference for properties within secure estates. With its prime location and beautiful beaches, there is significant demand in uMhlanga – with secure estates and beachfront apartment blocks proving to be extremely popular. In particular, new estates like Izinga and Hawaan Forest, and beachfront developments such as the Oceans and the Pearls are experiencing high demand.
Turning now to the Gauteng market, which has underperformed in recent years, we are seeing buoyancy at the entry-level of the market, with the majority of South Africa’s first time buyers entering the property market in Johannesburg. According to ooba, first-time buyers remain the most significant contributor to home loan volumes, accounting for 53% of all ooba’s bond applications in 2016. It is this robust demand from first-time buyers which helps to explain the continued strong price performance of the lower price band (below R1 million) which has underpinned the Gauteng market.
The new Signature Estate promises to be the best address in KZN, with only 45 exclusive stands in a prime residential security estate all with panoramic sea views and direct beach access. Record land prices of as much as R10,5 million for 2 000sqm have been achieved.
In contrast to the cooling house price inflation in both the Western Cape and Gauteng, KwaZulu Natal is experiencing a modest rebound – with growth in prices rallying from 5.4% in late-2015 to a level of 7.5% in September 2016. There is no sign yet that the rebound in prices will lose momentum in 2017.
Further north towards Umdloti, the new Sibaya precinct is the hotspot in KZN. Sibaya will be a controlled precinct with security, well-run retail and office components and prime residential nodes resting above forest and sea.
Further fuelling interest from property investors on the North Coast is the increase in economic activity at the Dube TradePort, which, together with King Shaka International Airport, forms part of the regional aerotropolis. International travel was significantly bolstered last year by the addition to Durban’s network of four new international airlines. Official statistics show that total international arrivals have risen by 60% since King Shaka opened in 2010 due to direct international flights.
With all this activity in KZN, it is very exciting to be part of what we predict will be the hottest spot to invest in property 2017. KZN we salute you!”

Situated within the luscious coastal forest and amongst a multitude of brilliantly and delicately coloured flowers, Zimbali adapted its name from isiZulu, meaning valley of flowers.ďż˝ Treated to a serene weekend away at the Fairmont Zimbali Resort, we experienced pure bliss on a truly epic scale.
A
rguably one of the finest holiday destinations on our stretch of the North Coast, Fairmont Zimbali Resort epitomises 5 star luxury. A spectacular blend of glamour and modern luxury, Fairmont Zimbali Resort merges striking design, contemporary art and endless sea views into a vibrant guest experience. The grand entrance lobby combined with a warm welcome gave us a hint of what awaited us. Promptly booked into the spacious Seaview Suite, we marvelled at the attention to sumptuous detail within the suite. Contemporary furnishings featuring stone, wood and earthy tones all wrapped up in soft luxury. With floorto-ceiling views of the ocean and natural surroundings from the bedroom, lounge area and the large wrap around veranda, guarantees the holiday feeling.
The amenities in our suite included a fully fitted kitchen, dining area, spacious living area, king size bedroom with one of the largest beds I've ever seen, topped off by the exquisite marble bathroom with a walk-in dressing room and fabulous stand alone tub. Welcome gifts included a platter of handmade chocolate delights which set the mood for our whirlwind tour around the hotel and the facilities on offer. To ensure we experienced all the resort had to offer, a flexible itinerary was set up for us which included wining and dining at almost all of the restaurants which offer a variety of specialities, sure to tempt any food lover's taste buds. To start, pre-dinner drinks were arranged at the stylish lobby bar, 31 Degrees, and had us experiencing some old school classic cocktails overlooking the Indian Ocean.

Decadent luxury Offering breathtaking ocean views, accommodations at The Fairmont Zimbali Resort are luxurious and comfortable.
The dining area of the Coral Tree Restaurant No need to travel far for an amazing meal - dining options are conveniently located within and around the Resort
OSA Delicious! With enticing appetizers and decadent entrĂŠes, you will find that just one visit to this Indian-style retreat isn't enough.
Onto OSA for dinner, which was my personal favourite. Transported into the sights, sounds and fragrances of India, the ambiance of the restaurant along with the friendliness of the staff, made for a memorable evening. The Squid Fry Masala starter and the Lamb Korma main stood out, with the cashew nut cream sauce on the latter being sublime. Waking up to the sunrise over the ocean was a special treat, as was the breakfast at Delicacy - a cafe style restaurant offering light meals throughout the day. For more information: Tel: +27 (0) 32 538 5000 Fax: +27 (0) 32 538 5001 zim.reservations@fairmont.com www.fairmont.com/zimbali-resort/
A day spent lounging at the pool was topped off with lunch at Ayoba! - a traditional Mexican fare restaurant located at the ever so stylish Beach Club adjacent to the beach. Tall glasses of crushed ice with Strawberry coulis and mint kept us cool while we lunched on hot baked Pulled Pork Nachos
- literally enough to feed an army! Travel to and from the Beach Club in a chauffeured golf cart ensured that we were cool and collected on arrival for our afternoon booking at the Willow Stream Spa. Pampering takes on new meaning at this haven of calm within the Resort. Escorted through to the plush changing area which includes steam rooms, experience showers and locker facilities, we slipped into the swish gown and made our way to the relaxation area and then on to the treatment room. The spa offers 9 treatment rooms in total and ours was decadently appointed with wide beds fitted with feather duvets, soft music, a large spa bath and two wonderfully experienced massage therapists. Our 90 minute
Pampering @ Willow Stream Spa An extensive menu of spa services is offered, including signature treatments, massages, facials, and body treatments.
Aromatherapy massage allowed us to relax, unwind and escape to an oasis of calm and serenity. Dressing up for dinner at the Coral Tree restaurant allowed us to glam up and experience the elegant yet comfortable space situated on the first floor of the Resort. The dinner buffet brings together four different countries and cultures - South African, Indian, Oriental and Italian. Features include a sushi bar, South African carvery, Mama's Italian pasta bar, stir fry station and chocolate fountain (!) - all terrifically indulgent and decadent! Sunday breakfast was a leisurely affair on the terrace of the Coral Tree restaurant, think perfect pastries, eggs prepared any which way you favour, a selection of breakfast staples, a waffle and pancake station, fresh fruits and aromatic coffees to end off the start to the day. Fairmont Zimbali Resort is the perfect environment to restore your energy and indulge all your senses.
LOVE at first bite The unique dining and bar area at the Beach Club entwine the Mexican flavours of Ayoba! with refreshing drinks and cocktails in a relaxed, stylish setting

It’s no surprise that the 80% of the residential transfers within the greater Ballito area are for gated estates and in the last 12-months an astonishing R1.7 Billion in transfers were done within the gated estates surrounding Ballito and Salt Rock.”
Like a piece of delicate art, the Ballito area has steadily become something of significant beauty.
N
ot only is this seen by potential buyers, looking for a place to call home, but also to developers.
Zimbali Coastal Resort first set the benchmark for estate living, both locally and nationally and really helped put the Ballito region on the map from a high-end residential perspective. This has in turn been the catalyst for possibly the best selection of residential estates, nationally, within a very small geographic radius. Here developers have been exceptionally good at “fine-tuning” their offerings in order to maximise convenience, family facilities and a host of valueadded lifestyle benefits. Simbithi Eco Estate and Dunkirk Estate are both prime examples of how a great, holistic development concept can create an unprecedented residential demand, but also stimulate further retail and commercial activity. For an extended period of time, Simbithi has been one of the fastest selling estates in the country, based on its location, facilities and how well it caters for an entire family. The proof is in the pricing where the average value of land on the estate has increased by 220% since 2005, with some sea-facing plots now worth more than four times what they were initially sold for. Newer developments are now having the ability to learn from existing successes and blend this with their own vision in order to create opportunities that keep evolving in line with adapting market demand. Currently the North Coast is proving to be its own phenomenon with approximately 30 families per month, moving from the greater Durban area to the North Coast. This can be contributed to security as well as the holistic lifestyle that greater Ballito has become renowned for. Proximity to world-class hospitals, shopping malls, the airport, commercial and retails hubs, as well as some wonderful private and government schools are massive draw-cards for the area.
On-average, 20% of the estate buyers are from Gauteng, but we expect this to grow to around 30% within the next 5 years. We are also expecting an additional surge in growth, based on the quality of new gated estates that are coming onto the market. Zululami Luxury Coastal Estate and Elaleni Coastal Forest Estate, both near Sheffield, are examples of new projects that have been meticulously planned and positioned and that have been well-received by the market. When one adds Tongaat Hulett’s vision for their Tinley Manor development, we are sitting with one of the most valuable sections of real estate, in this Country, right on our doorstep. As estates continue to evolve, and differentiate themselves, the main beneficiaries are investors. In all cases estates will launch at preferential prices which would then increase as the development evolves through its life-cycle. In new estates buyers are all buying off-plan (land or sectionaltitle) and having the luxury of securing their purchase price upfront but then seeing the value escalate as every brick or paving block goes into the ground. There are very few scenarios on the North Coast, where people buying into a successful estate early have not seen the value of their property doubling over a period of time, which practically out-performs any other form of investment and really bodes well for those wanting to make the North Coast their home.

From using technology to track our emotions to urbanism dictating our fashions, the trends for 2017 and the future are as varied as they are exciting.
CHRIS REID Trend Specialist & Writer | International Trend Institute With an academic background in Literature and Brand Strategy, and a personality generally inclined towards the nerdy, trend research was a natural career path for Chris. Heยนs been with ITI, the International Trend Institute, since 2009 where he is the lead trend researcher. He works on insight projects for clients locally and internationally and speaks around the country on social and branding trends. He was named one of House and Leisure's top "Next Generation Creatives" in 2016, and is regularly quoted in the media as a trend thinker. When he's not working, Chris is either buying more books he may or may not ever have time to read or continuing his search for the perfect white T-shirt. ITI is a holistic branding and communication agency based in Durban. With a combination of considered strategic thinking, global trend knowledge and creative design, they work with clients to define, create and market meaningful brands. Starting in 1996, ITI pioneered the distribution of international trend information in the South African market. While the company has grown to encompass a broader offering that includes comprehensive brand development, communication and publicity, their roots in trend research still inform the mindset and culture of the company in a very real way. 38

FOR 2017
The field of trend research is often maligned for being both superficial and focused on the select few. The truth, however, is that when it’s done right it’s anything but that. Studying trend is simply about understanding our world and our relationship to it. That’s why at ITI, the International Trend Institute, we start our research by looking at the macro trends at play. These are the big picture shifts in our world that cross fields like design, retail, behaviour and technology and speak to an essential truth in our lives.
I
n our Macro Trend Review for 2017, we’ve focused on the idea of belonging in the modern world as our overall theme. From Brexit to Trump to the chambers of our own Parliament here in South Africa, the big questions in the world right now are around where you belong and where your allegiances lie. The world is becoming increasingly connected and globalised and I think that’s where a lot of this sentiment comes from. As you can live, work, shop and consume media from anywhere you like (pending a visa or two for lucky South African passport holders), your grounding becomes as important. The big question for everyone is, in a radically connected world, where do you really belong? For this year’s Review, we’ve been tracking four ways of belonging in the world: Member, Tourist, Citizen and Individual. They describe different ways people understand their relationship within their context, and influence the way people live, shop, relate to each other and understand themselves. The first thread, Member, describes how people seek real connection in a dissociating world. Technology is obviously a key facilitator of this and we’ve seen everything from projects like wearables that let you feel the heartbeat of a loved one to house robots that keep elderly people company and navigate technology to connect them with their families. On the more amusing end of the spectrum, a “people walker” in the US has got a lot of press coverage lately for his services. For $7 a mile, he will keep you company on a walk – a kind of friendship on demand for busy Millennials. What’s key to understand here is that people aren’t necessarily friendless, but with busy schedules, different ways of working and people often living and working far away from their social networks, meeting people in person is often challenging. Especially when it’s so much more tempting to just like a post on Instagram and count that as your engagement with others for the day. Tourist, the second thread we’ve been tracking, is about how the world itself seems more like fiction than fact these days, and the effect that has on us all. Post-truth is the big topic to consider here. We’re living in a time when what you believe seems to be more important that the objective truth (something politicians take
advantage of through “alternative facts”). The phrase “Post-Truth” was even named the Oxford Dictionary word of the year in 2016 for the speed with which it rocketed into our collective consciousness. We’re also seeing the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) come into its own with chatbots being used for customer service instead of people and machine creativity as the next frontier in technology. So all this means that it’s difficult to trust anything at face value in our world, and this means people are seeking the truth and are more sceptical in general. In terms of location and belonging, we’re seeing cities as primary parts of identity in our third big trend, Citizen. Increasingly, the city you live in is more a part of your identity than your country. Just look at the rise in city branding and almost rabid way in which people assert their identity as a Capetonian vs Joburger vs Durbanite. We’re officially an urban species now, with more people living in cities than outside of them, so this shift has been coming for some time. As a result we’re seeing services pop up to help people navigate a new city – like AirBnB’s focus on trips and experiences instead of just places. Urbanism has gone mainstream now and we’re seeing city grids and icons filter into things like accessories, clothing and art as a result too. The last trend we’re tracking for 2017 is about people owning their own emotions. We’ve called it allegiance to the Individual. From wearable technology that tracks your emotions to help you calm down and perform better to emotion tracking technology in retail stores and so-called “mood food” that de-stresses and makes you happy, feelings are firmly in focus at the moment. We’ve come through a few generations where feelings were seen as something to be suppressed and kept private, so this focus on self-care is a welcome change. So that’s the big picture we’re tracking for 2017 at ITI. As always, I’m interested to see how these develop throughout the coming year, and how they evolve into a new set of trends in time. This question of allegiance will only become more important for people to resolve in the coming years, requiring people to negotiate their own belonging in the world in many different ways. 39

eautiful dresses, check. Very bling jewellery, check. Glamorous location, check. Dramatic hair and make up, check. Teaming up with Amour Designs, Vernon White Designer Jewellery, Hair Co. and Redlip Studio made for a sensational shoot. We decided that as this was our fire issue, what is more dramatic than super luxurious evening wear paired with glittering jewellery? With blistering temperatures and humidity to make even the most seasoned North Coaster melt, the Hair Co. and Redlip Studio teams ensured that our models hair and make up stood up to the challenge! Vernon and Lucille White very kindly opened their oh so stylish Zimbali Coastal Resort home to us, making for the perfect location as well as being the ultimate hosts and keeping the team refreshed with very cold wine and the airconditioning running at full tilt. Designer Madeleen Tsai of Amour Designs selected a vibrant mix of dresses from their 2017 evening wear collection. Hair Co. captivated some old school glamour for hair while Redlip Studio layered on the drama with both eyes and lips to create a fitting union with the striking attire. Evening out anyone?

Riding a bicycle is one of the best ways to enjoy scenery and landscapes - what better way than to enjoy the beach, coastal forests & lagoons of the pristine North Coast than by bicycle?
R
esident of Prince’s Grant Golf Estate, Julian Bryant, has started a fat biking operation called Pedal Africa, operating from the Welcome Centre at Prince’s Grant, 30km North of Salt Rock. The bicycle of choice for these adventures are special bicycles known as ‘fatties’ with big tyres for beach and sandy jeep track riding in the local indigenous forests. The beach between Blythedale and Zinkwazi provides an amazing ride with stunning bays, firm sand, beautiful rock formations and dune vegetation. A full setup of 12 bikes and apparel is on offer for hire or sale, as well as some nutritional products to ensure you have sufficient energy to tackle the approximate 2hour (15-18km) route. There are a variety of routes depending on rider skill and experience - although each route features a substantial amount of riding on the beach, which is the main attraction. The forest

bring a smile to anyone’s face. If you’re lucky you will even spot dolphins, whales (during season of course) and the abundant bird life of the area.
Permission has been obtained from the local sugar cane farmer adjacent to Prince’s Grant as well as Blythedale Coastal Resort to cycle on their respective properties. Blythedale Coastal Resort has also invested in the cutting of specific trails for riding with the fatties and mountain bikes - this includes a wonderful forest single track adjacent to the lagoon with the odd bridge or two.
After an exhilarating ride on the fat bikes, you can enjoy fantastic hospitality at the Prince’s Grant Lodge where one can enjoy a good meal and ice cold beverages whilst overlooking the beautiful views across the estate towards the Indian Ocean.
Many people have enjoyed the experience of riding these fun bicycles on the amazing terrain over the recent December period - an activity the whole family can enjoy (provided all have a fair level of fitness). Julian guides the tours and ensures everyone gets as much enjoyment out of the bikes and the route as possible. Riding on the beach at low tide is an experience that will

ART S C E N E Big Bold Brave Brushstrokes in aBundance
Text Barbie Meyer www.barbiemeyer.com | Images Submitted by the artists featured
Barbie Meyer, actress, writer, singer & art-lover, was asked by Imbizo Gallery owner, Isabel Roos, to chat to us about two fiery artists: Sarah Danes Jarett and Everett Duarte. Isabel invites all Luxe readers to pop into Imbizo Gallery in Ballito, Imbizo Gallery in Hoedspruit and now the new Imbizo Gallery at Pearl Walk in Umhlanga. Here you will be able to view some of the gorgeous artworks spoken about in this article.
I
don’t know if you’ve noticed it but I’ve found that artists, across all the genres, seem to have a fire in them. It has nothing to do with whether they’re quiet and reclusive or noisy and gregarious...nothing to do with whether they’re prolific or annoyingly unproductive.
No, it just appears to be that this fiery spirit is a kind of pre-requisite if you’re involved in the arts. It’s an elusive, in-built passion which burns and drives them to do what they do. In fact, I have gotten rather good at detecting who is an artist in a crowded room – and can sniff one out at twenty paces...much like I can with chocolate…well almost. Recently I had the pleasure of chatting to two, full-time fiery artists whose works are ablaze with bright, bold and exquisite contemporary brush strokes.

UNFOLDING
Everett Duarte
ABSTRACT
Everett Duarte at work
E
verett Duarte is really a modern day Tarzan…but before you roll your eyes at my shallowness – hear me out...I mean it in the most super un-cheesy way possible.
You see, before he answered my ‘what did you want to be when you grew up?’ question, I could picture him climbing a mountain with just a water bottle and his wits to get him through. Equally one can picture him swimming to the bottom of a little known ocean reef to see what there is to see. If it’s remote and unpopulated, Everett would like to be there...discovering. The wildest part of Africa lies deep and effortlessly within his veins. Art for him is an organic, fiery thing. His answer to my above question is, ‘an adventurer’ – bingo! (That’s just another word for Tarzan – told you so.) Art most definitely runs thick and fast in the family genes. Everett’s father is well known South African artist Izidro Duarte – who is considered one of the masters along with the likes of Keith Joubert – who was a mate of his. Everett’s Mom, Maureen Duarte, has always been involved in either running a Gallery or marketing Izidro’s work. Everett has married his soul mate, German born and bred, Frances Schandera Duarte who is also a full time artist in her own right. Everett insists that Santi, their eight year old daughter, is probably the best artist of them all. “She has no fears,” and often has to fix my drawings that I do for her.
Everett and his family live and work in Germany for half the year and the other in sunny South Africa on the KwaZulu Natal South Coast. They need to come back, Everett explains to me, to be inspired and thaw out in the sunshine. (I think he’s actually half Tarzan, half lizard.) An adventurous lifestyle it certainly is...and it works for them. Did you always know that you were going to be an artist? I never knew I would do anything to be honest! I just wanted to enjoy my allotted space on this beautiful blue planet. The art was something I was instinctively able to do. My formal education was in graphic design so I knew I had a bent for creating things. I am grateful for this training as technically it has helped me a great deal in my work. Art has been a natural, unannounced progression for me, and it’s my genes I guess. There was no escaping it! You’ve been labelled as a contemporary abstract painter – would you agree? Yes, I certainly started out as an abstract artist, but my journey has brought me to the stage now where I portray semirealism in my works. I guess initially I was a bit on the re-bound from my Dad’s art style. I respect his work hugely and obviously knew I couldn’t even attempt to follow right in his footsteps – far too daunting. But now elements of realism are sneaking back into my work. My Dad is extremely supportive of my work which has taken the edge off, I guess. What is important for you to get ‘right’ in your work? Essentially, it’s the line that runs through the piece...it must flow. I also try

small amount out that just works first time round...you have no idea how many layers lie beneath one of my paintings! But for me that’s the process. It’s really not about it being easy, it’s something I grapple away at daily. Your brushstrokes appear fiery – do you approach your canvas aggressively or passively? Both! And I think this is indicative of my nature. There’s a definite ‘push’ and ‘pull’ in my veins. Sometimes I’m massively confident and approach with bravado...and I just get lucky and it works. Other times I approach with the caution of a scalded cat – and that also has its benefits. What inspires you to paint? My work is nature-based so inspiration comes after being somewhere – usually outdoors in the mountains or ocean. The picture then develops itself. But with the cats – mostly cheetahs and lions – I started painting them because of the incredible significance of them in the wild. I don’t want my work to be decorative... sure it can have a pleasing aesthetic quality but I don’t paint for pure beauty. With the cats I have a strong need to show them in an ‘evaporating’, deconstructed way...because this is exactly what is happening with them. There is much hype around, say the rhino, and rightly so, but we only have 7000 odd cheetah in the wild...one day our children will only be able to see them in farms and zoos – it’s crazy and desperate. I get fixated on this insatiable appetite for greed that mankind has when it comes to wildlife. So I guess that’s what inspired me to do the cat thing.
EVERETT DUARTE to capture the essence of the being that I am portraying. It must ‘feel’ like a lion for example – no matter how deconstructed it gets. Your fellow artists consider you to be an exceptional colourist – and that you have a natural feel for mixing colours. How do you go about deciding on the colours you’re going to use and mix for a specific piece? To tell you the truth I’m beginning to think that these artists who just paint straight from the darn tube are on to something! I have to admit that nowadays there are some really beautiful, already mixed hues available across the whole spectrum of colours. But yes, I spend a lot of time mixing my paint - in an effort to get the tonal values to work and getting everything to key in. I kind of enjoy ‘broken’ colours – to me there is a thrill in ‘once-off ’ mixed colours...as long as it feels like the subject I’m trying to portray then I’m happy. Do you ever ‘fail’ - as in disliking a piece and painting over it? Oh absolutely – continuously! I only get a very
What have been the highlights in your artistic career? I would have to say a biggie for me was being selected in a group of 64 international artists of our generation for an exhibition in Munich. The exhibition was called Grosse Kunst Ausstellung. (“It sounds like I’m bragging now,” he laughs, “so don’t put this in the article...but Picasso’s Guernica was in the mix...how cool is that?!”) Also, I was asked to paint the brand new Audi TT Coupé for the launch of the car in Germany - in my abstract style. It was executed in a performance art kind of vibe – that was a blast! Do you do commissions? Yes I do. And I think I am able to really listen to what the client is looking for. This probably comes from my Graphic Design days where the brief is essential and the client being satisfied is imperative. But having said that, commissions hang heavily on me, probably also the repercussions of my Graphic Design days - the freedom of your own mind is curbed somewhat. What do you do when you’re not painting? I get outside as quickly as my legs will take me. In South Africa it’s easy. I’m a hop and skip away from the ocean and it doesn’t take me long to get into it. In Germany, it’s trickier with the weather, but then I will take off to the mountains. Of course, I also love playing with Santi, my daughter and spending time doing her homework with her. What makes you laugh? (Laughs) This question makes me laugh, Barbie!

ACRYLIC & OIL ON CANVAS Sarah Danes Jarett
A
self-confessed neat freak, Sarah Danes Jarett is a delight to chat to for her natural simplicity and downright honesty.
She admits that she doesn’t have extreme views about things and doesn’t feel the need to put avid political or fundamental messages across in her paintings. She simply adores the process and journey of a painting (there’s that fiery passion thing that I was alluding to).
measured, Sarah takes a long breath in before answering any of my questions – and one is instantly aware that although quiet - she is certainly no push-over. After chatting to her, I get the feeling that this is someone who if you asked the age old question, “Does my bum look fat in these jeans?” she would quietly ask you to turn around, take a good look and then tell you without hesitation the unadulterated truth…which would probably sting in my case. I like her.
Sarah is an artist who would possibly (only if she had to!) put herself in the ‘introvert’ category. Softly spoken with words carefully
Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Sarah went on to study at the commercial Arts Tech in Harare, and she is considered one of
this country’s finest naturalist artists. Her exquisite, bright, blocky, large-scale portraits demand a response. Her faces often stare right back at you as the viewer – they contain an alluring quality which make you want to look back and see if she’s still looking at you. And she always is. When I ask her the plebeian question, “Yes, you can paint…but can you draw?” (Which is another thing I’m always secretly thinking when looking at abstract works – ‘those are delightful blobs and things but I wonder if this artist can actually draw’…don’t you?) 51

ACRYLIC & OIL ON CANVAS Sarah Danes Jarett
My paintings have been described as chaotic but actually every mark is considered...the colour, the direction of the stroke, the length of every brush stroke – all of it is really not haphazard at all. I layer the paint until it’s right – and then I reach for the tube of white! ”
Sarah breathes in as she thinks back fondly and tells me of Martin van der Spuy, ‘A wonderful lecturer and fine artist,’ who really inspired her. He encouraged his students to fall in love with figure drawing which she just adored...and probably seeded her eventual love for figurative and portrait work. So yes, she can draw! Sarah arrived in South Africa in 1988 (following a boyfriend, she laughs) and now resides in Wynburg in the beautiful Cape with her two teenage children. She opts for a simple life out of the lime light, where small talk can be kept to a minimum. “This surely must be tricky?” I interject, “when your work is in high demand and exhibitions and events call for their fair share of your public self?” She admits that she finds these events a little stiff but once she’s out of her ‘painting clothes’ and finally gets to an exhibition she often really enjoys the chatting and sharing of ideas despite her inertia. What is important for you to get ‘right’ in your work? Oh that’s easy - the white. I’m a bit of controlling person and to me the white finishing touches ‘correct’ the final artwork. White just neatens up the entire thing and draws the piece together to make it cohesive to me. I use white on the face and especially around the edges – my neatness streak demands it! Tell us about how you go about a painting – what inspires you and how do you transfer your idea onto the canvas? Well firstly, I’ve found, that once I have an idea I keep it to myself because if I discuss it first – it’s almost like I don’t need to do it anymore – it’s been verbalized so what’s the point? So usually, I see a photograph of someone where I find that there’s something I can relate to: a look or an attitude. I need to perhaps see a little of myself in the piece – so I guess they’re a tad autobiographical. Then I sketch the design in pencil onto the white canvas and follow this with khoki pen. Once this is done, I’m ready to get stuck in with my brushes which I have in a wonderful array of sizes. I have the most gorgeous 40cm brush...Barbie, do you know how much paint that sucks up?!
What makes you laugh? Oooh that’s difficult! I would have to say my 14 year old daughter – she’s a fiend with accents and is incredibly spontaneous and has us in fits of laughter. How do you know when a piece is finished? I just know instinctively – it feels and looks finished. My son has a very good critical eye so sometimes when I’m unsure I call him in and he may mention that an eye is slightly off or whatever and then I will touch it up. Did you always know that you would be an artist? You know Barbie, they say prostitution is the oldest profession in the world...don’t believe it – it’s actually art! Think of cave art for example. I think it has always been instinctively in all of us – and I have just had the wonderful opportunity to nurture this in my life. It is now what I do commercially and it works. I don’t try to over analyse or justify what I do – I am just grateful that people like my work enough for them to buy and live with them in their space. It allows me to continue doing what is instinctive to me. What would you do if you weren’t an artist? (Sarah doesn’t skip a beat on this one.) Definitely a chef! A dish you would cook for your friends? An Indian curry with moist chocolate cake for dessert. (Note to self: Pop in to Sarah’s the next time I’m in Cape Town...with a tube of white paint...around supper time).
How do you keep the skin so life-like and translucent using the crazy colours that you do? Well, I’m glad that they come across as translucent and life-like because I seem to just be making my colours brighter and brighter and am having a ball with florescent colours at the moment. But seriously, to me, if you’re painting ‘real people’ with ‘real translucent skin’ – it’s almost like one can never really be too radical or go too far...because of the extensive layering – the overall feel is ‘skin’, no matter what palette one opts for. Do you ever ‘fail’ - as in disliking a piece and painting over it? Yes, I must admit that I have painted over earlier pieces – but in general a piece takes me at least a week and I deliberate over every part – so I don’t really need to paint it over again. Do you do commissions? Yes, I do – but of adults only. I am often asked to do children’s portraits but this is something which I really choose not to do. Children are too rounded and soft and perfect...there’s nothing there for me to paint.

Location King Shaka International Airport
On the 11th of October 2016, KSIA hosted their bi-annual Full Scale Emergency Exercise as regulated by the SACAA and ICAO, the aviation governing bodies.
T
he planning for this exercise happened over a period of five months. The reason for such exercises is to ensure that the airport and its surrounding communities of emergency responders are well prepared to handle mass casualties and aviation disasters. This exercise tested several components such as fire-fighting, mass casualty medical care, hospital process for mass casualty cases, resource deployment from different entities, customer care and family assistance care, management of disasters by the airport authority, media crisis communication and overall stakeholder integration and inter-agency communications. We were very excited to have South African Airways as the participating airline is this years’ exercise and they played a fundamental
role in ensuring that the airlines’ processes and procedures when dealing with crisis were properly tested. They tested all of their resources and ensured that their staff is adequately trained to handle any crisis situation that may arise. The other airlines at the airport also participated in the capacity of support to South African Airways and ensuring that their staff also learns from the experience that they got during this exercise. A large variety of stakeholders were involved in this exercise which included some 25 entities from airlines, handling agents, other emergency services, surrounding hospitals, police, government agencies, surrounding communities and NGOs, stakeholders around the airport precinct, army, air force, tertiary institutions, forensics and air traffic control amongst others.
We are overwhelmed by the commitment and realistic approach that was taken during this operation.”
The exercise was evaluated by people from all the different entities whom were not participating in the exercise as well as people from other airports. Nokuthula “Thuli’’ Mpangeva, Assistant Manager: Aerodrome Emergency Systems (AMS) said, “Each exercise has certain objectives and scenarios that the various entities will want to test during the planning phases of the exercise and these are put in place during the simulation. From our observations so far the objectives were met with some lessons learned that we will work on to improve our service and ensure a safer environment for all. We would like to thank all the respective role players, volunteers, emergency services and airlines that participated in the operation.

Collaborative and critical thinking in action
At CrawfordSchools™ we aspire to develop students who are able to participate in the current 21st Century global experiences which they are now actively a part of.
A
ll around the world, systems of education are implementing a range of 21st Century skills programmes to give their students the advantages of the key requirements for today’s world of study and work. In response to these global trends, Advtech has defined and created a continuum of 21st C skills which all our Crawford Schools have implemented Our schools commit to actively empowering and educating our students to become critical, creative and reflective thinkers, effective
56
communicators, capable and confident collaborators, skilled and competent researchers, and resilient individuals who can self-manage themselves. The students are exposed to and utilise a variety of different tools and strategies to develop their understanding and use of the Core Skills. Crawford has placed high focus on teaching and developing all these skills across all subject areas and in alignment with the various phases of development in our students' lives.
Crawford Preparatory North Coast Grade 5 pupils have been working on a research task. They have created a Field Guide on South African wild animals. The task was completed on Google Slides. The pupils had to collaborate, self-manage their time and research their information in order to complete the task.
The Core Skills 21c Continuum has thus been separated into four phases: • • • •
Pre-Primary Phase (grade 000 to 0) Foundation Phase (grade 1 to 3) Intersen Phase (grade 4 to 7) and College Phase (grade 8 to 12)
These tools and strategies are thus specifically tailored to meet the specific needs and abilities of all the Crawford children as they continue to progress through the different grades at our schools. Education at Crawford is an evolving, engaging and innovative process and requires a variety of different approaches to the teaching and learning taking place in the classrooms. The students understanding is extended and enhanced by the learning being connected across subjects, as well as being authentically linked to real-life situations and contexts.
Kagan Structures are instructional strategies designed to promote cooperation and communication in the classroom, boost students' confidence and retain their interest in classroom interaction. Cooperative learning is the instructional practice of placing students into small groups and having them work together toward a common goal. Each group member learns new material and helps other group members learn important information. In the photograph, the children are using the ‘Think, Pair, Share’ strategy. The children divided into pairs and the teacher set them a research task. As most Pre-Primary children are not yet able to read, they gather information by looking through relevant picture books, researching on iPads, asking a knowledgeable person or observing their immediate environment. Each child then discussed their findings with their partner and the partner then relayed this information to the class. Partners then switched roles. This activity enhanced the development of the children’s research, thinking and communication skills.
In order to continually develop the children’s knowledge, skills and understandings, the Crawford teachers continually provide specific guidance, examples, models, clear expectations, targets and a wide variety of opportunities for the students to apply their knowledge and skills, reflect on their progress and engage in rich discussions about with what they have learnt.
Teachers also continue to provide students with ongoing, constructive and appropriate feedback related to their personal development.” There are a number of different formats this feedback can take, which ranges from 1:1 feedback as well as reflecting on formal assessments and assignments completed. The aim of our Crawford Schools is that our students will be able to confidently apply 21st C skills within the leading 21st C pedagogies evident in our classrooms, so our children are able to readily face the dynamic, complex challenges and changes taking place in the global learning and workspace.

WHAT HAPPENS WITH THE PAYMENT OF LEVIES ON THE TRANSFER OF MY PROPERTY?
AM I RESPONSIBLE FOR UNPAID BILLS FROM THE MUNICIPALITY PRIOR TO TAKING TRANSFER OF MY PROPERTY?
pon the sale of your property, the conveyancers will apply for a levy clearance certificate which must be valid until after registration of the transfer.
[Court found consumers property rights are protected in terms of our Constitution]
U
Levies are thus paid in advance and the conveyancers will usually make an adjustment upon transfer, to refund any overpayment of levies. In some instances, the Body Corporate may have imposed Special Levies (to cover once-off costs like maintenance, for example). Agreements generally provide that the seller must pay such levies where such levies were imposed prior to the date of sale, and if such levies were imposed after the date of sale, but before transfer, it would generally be for the buyer’s expense. Sellers and buyers are therefore advised to scrutinize their sale agreements carefully. Levies are reviewed annually, and the levies reflected on the sale agreement might not necessarily be the levies that will be payable after the transfer of the property. The onus is therefore on the buyer to ensure that he makes proper enquiries prior to the purchase of the property, as to the financial status of the Body Corporate, and any anticipated increases in levies or the imposition of special levies.
T
he Gauteng High Court (Pretoria) recently clarified the confusion that existed with regard to the liability of property owners for historical debt incurred by previous owners.
In the matter of New Ventures Consulting and Services/ Livanos and Others vs The City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality and Others, (Case number 74195/2013) the court found that the practice of municipalities holding new owners liable for municipal debts older than two years under the provisions of Section 118(3) of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act No.32 of 2000 is unconstitutional and amounts to an improper and arbitrary deprivation of a property right. Municipalities can no longer disconnect services, or refuse to re-connect services upon the transfer of ownership of a property on the basis that there is still old outstanding debt. Municipalities must accordingly ensure that upon the issue of rates figures for payment on a property transaction, all historical debt are covered even if such debt is older than two years as they can no longer hold the new owner of the property liable for such debt. The matter was decided in the Gauteng High Court, which decision is not binding on municipalities which fall within other jurisdictions, such as KwaZulu Natal. It is however highly unlikely that the municipalities in other jurisdictions would not follow suit and should adhere to the constitutional principle, namely that a person cannot be deprived of their (newly acquired) property right to secure the payment of municipal debt of previous owners.

The LUXE team chatted to our newest contributor, Struan Campbell of PSG Wealth Umhlanga, about his passion for PSG and the quest to demystify stockbroking for his clients.
P
SG is a leading independent financial services group, with three divisions – PSG Wealth, PSG Asset Management and PSG Insure – supported by the largest network of independent financial advisers in South Africa. We focus on wealth creation and preservation, asset management and insurance solutions for enterprises and individuals. PSG’s holding company, PSG Group, is the majority shareholder in two other familiar companies – Capitec and Curro. In fact, PSG was instrumental in the development of both of them. The other large investment is in Zeder – a company focused on the agribusiness sector. If you enjoy eating Weetbix or drinking Ceres juice – you are adding value to PSG! PSG offers clients access to a full suite of financial products to meet all their financial planning needs; from investments to insurance and all wealth management services in-between. We emphasize the importance of personal service and building lifelong relationships with our clients.
STRUAN CAMPBELL Portfolio Manager | PSG Wealth I have been in the financial services industry since 2003 and with PSG since 2011. Joining PSG Wealth was a game changer for me – it is an incredible organization to be a part of. Prior to that I spent many happy years in the professional yacht racing arena in the USA. I also spend a fair amount of early morning time in the surf and a favourite spot is Tiffanies at Salt Rock. My family have had a home overlooking the break for about 40 years, so despite my living in Umhlanga, I do count myself as a bit of a Dolphin Coaster! 62
measures, and have dedicated compliance officers to oversee all compliance processes, businesses, platforms and transactions. The team at the Umhlanga Holwood Park office focuses on stockbroking and its associated services. We offer a variety of options: • Safe custody accounts: for someone who just wants to buy a specific share and hold it for the long term • Traded accounts: these are for people who want to trade, make decisions, play an active role but ultimately make the call themselves. We assist them with advice and trading facilities but the decision on what to buy or sell rests with them. • Managed accounts: this is our preferred service and offers clients, who don’t have the time or knowledge to run their own investments, a fully managed portfolio. A management fee is charged but this eliminates the need for one to constantly monitor the market. Our team is doing it for you.
We are the largest independent adviser network in South Africa, with a footprint spanning the entire country. This enables us to service our clients anywhere. We also offer true independence, with no exclusivity to any single service provider and have no specific product preferences. By liaising with a PSG adviser you are not being tied to a PSG product or service; that adviser can assist you with almost any other financial service provider’s products.
“Yes, the short-term ride can be a little bit rocky – as we have seen in the past two years – but over the last 5 year period, with a diversified portfolio, you would have done well.
We all share a common brand, and while there is overlap in the services most of the offices provide, they can be quite differentiated. The philosophy and investment strategy is, however, very aligned. Due to our size we have established relationships with all major product and service providers enabling us to select the right provider or product for you.
Using a share portfolio to access those equities, rather than a unit trust fund, allows you a little more direct control over your investment. The caveat is that you need to invest a reasonable sum. Buying with a few thousand here and there is not ideal as the trading costs will eat into your returns if you are not careful.
PSG takes its fiduciary duty to protect clients’ assets seriously. To ensure we live up to the promise of trustworthiness and quality, we have a number of processes and controls in place. There is a robust due diligence process prior to accepting any new product, service or product provider.
What makes me passionate about PSG is the passion I see in the company for doing the right thing, assisting clients in their needs and putting them first. The continued focus on promoting professionalism and treating customers fairly is what drives me. Having a healthy interest in economics and markets helps, but doing the right thing for people is my main motivating factor.
We constantly monitor the financial soundness of the product providers through risk and compliance
Over the long term the best performing asset class is equity. If you want to out-perform inflation you need to be exposed to it.
