I hope that where ever you are on the east coast or in the world you find yourself indulging in this issue. That’s what we’re here for!

I love fall. The air is slightly crisp, the leaves are turning gorgeous colors, and the almost unbearable summer heat and humidity (if you live in the south) has finally subsided. For me fall means outdoor hikes, football and plenty of fashion. Inside this issue you’ll find plenty of inspiration to boost your wardrobe and your home. Brittany Noble Newcomb shares 7 style trends for fall 2022 and Lisa Mele interviews the designer Lara Kovacevich of the Australian brand Zhevago.

It’s the time of year where we can entertain outside and inside, see the beautiful new collaboration between JEFFREY ALAN MARKS with the fabric house Kravet. pg. 104. AIDA SOUL takes us on a journey of the nuances of design pg. 95 by Katelyn Rutt.

SOCO GALLERY SOCO Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Purpose At Random, a solo exhibition by artist Scott Avett. The gallery will host a Q&A with the artist on October 5th. This will be the artist’s second solo exhibition with SOCO Gallery. Avett’s paintings explore universal themes of faith and observa tion, love and loss, heartache and joy, as well as the more personal stories of career, family, and life.

Purpose At Random will present new medium and large-scale oil paintings and prints created by the artist from early 2020 through today.

The new paintings and prints in Purpose at Random explore the temporal place of meaning in the artistic process. For Avett, the narrative weight of a work can emerge after the creative act. Avett is guided by process - the assembling of elements – and as the layers stack and join, relationships and undercurrents present them selves. It is in mustering the trust necessary for this approach that Avett is able to find beauty. www.socogallery.com Christina Hussey photography

There are few things that rock my world like a book I can fall in love with. TV shows come and go, but books stay in your heart forever! I love recommendations from my friends—simply because “word-of-mouth” is trustworthy and powerful. Here’s what they told me to read!

In #1 bestseller Plum Island Nelson DeMille introduced readers to the brash NYPD Homicide Detective John Corey. Another six best-selling books later, Corey returns to Long Island after a forced retirement from his last job as a Federal Agent. At the start of The Maze, Corey’s restless and looking for action, so when his former lover, Detective Beth Penrose, appears with a job offer, Corey must make some decisions about his career—and about reuniting with Beth. As Corey digs deeper, he comes to suspect that the failure of the local police to solve a sensational case may not be a result of inexperience or incompetence. It may be something else—something much more sinister. nelsondemille.net

LUXE: If you haven’t, you should: Cruise down Worth Avenue and slip into the warm and welcoming space of Palm Beach Facials. As most of my followers know, I tend to be on a mission with skincare. TRAVEL: For locals and visitors alike, South Florida is the hub of boat shows. On a lovely March day, the family set out for the Palm Beach International Boat Show. As the boys went for the go-fast boats, I was stopped in my tracks with a hint of Lemoncello and Italians. Before I knew it, I was reminiscing with the captain aboard the handcrafted Fratelli Aprea 1890 Sorrento 32 gozzo boat. With each moment aboard, I was transported to my last trip to Capri. Instagram images are great at capturing a moment but nothing can come close to the true luxury of stepping onto the deck and gliding across the water. Slow your roll and head to the Ft. SPORT: With the calendar always full, it is nice to choose unscheduled time with friends. Nothing like the flow of conversation through movement immersed in nature to connect. One of my favorite spots is the stretch of beach from Jupiter to Juno. Taking a break at the pier to rehydrate, stretch and enjoy, it is funny to notice how small we are especially as we take in the vastness of the Atlan tic Ocean.

Consider what it feels like when on a rainy, dreary day, you’d rather not get out of bed and you’re drag ging, but you put on a bright pink top with cute yellow galoshes. Or when you’re feeling introspective or nos talgic and you come home to sit in your living room and shuffle through memories that are brought on by your eclectic hand-picked accessories and art. These are intentional, personal choices that can help shift your mood, help with processing your emotions, and emit energy that communicates to others.

One way we attempt to be understood is in the way we express ourselves through clothing, hair style, acces sories, art, home decor, and overall style. Self-expression through our style is one way we can communicate to and about our selves: our mood, emotions, interests, vibe. It is an outward represen tation of who we are or what we are experiencing. So often we suppress this in our culture that focuses on our fitting in, looking a certain way, and projecting an image of having it all together. This pressure can cause us to question or even alter what our own true style really even is. We grow out of tune with our sense of expression in service of chasing trends or blendingImaginein.what it would be like to shed self-conscious ness and to be able to wear or decorate with what simply makes you feel joyful or creative. There is such freedom in being able to listen to whatever emotion is present or whatever emotion you want to invoke.

The benefit to your mental health of genuinely ex pressing yourself is profound. This is when we feel aligned with our innermost desires and self-concept which naturally boosts confidence and presence. In this, there is flexibility and room to play, which is an other concept that gets stifled out of us adults! It’s your prerogative to show up how you want to on any given day or to create an essence in your living or working space that reflects how you want to feel.

LuxLifestyle-magazine.comWeallhaveaninherent desire to be seen and truly known. This is the human need to know that we matter. Some of us over time, though, have stifled our ability to be seen. We may have learned to squash it as a coping or protective mechanism or we might be intimidated by the vulnerability of being seen.

• Notice what sensations you physically feel when wearing or using a certain style.

• Talk back to or reframe any inner critic voice that is increasing self-consciousness. Try some mantras of self-compassion: I deserve to take up space, My worth isn’t defined by what others think of me, etc.

• Feel permission and curiosity to experiment. Step out and notice how it feels to embody this style ver sus any negative, insecure self-talk that might occur.

Fortunately the fall season is loaded with super food options and my Harvest Moon Bread is made with some of the best au tumn ingredients to ensure a healthier and happier transition as the seasons change.

By Marci Moreau Dear Marci, I live in the Northeast and as soon as the fall season begins I start to eat more and gain weight. What’s going on? How do I stay healthy and eat all the great fall foods?

Dear Feeling Sluggish in September, A harvest moon, falling leaves, or the morning dew that forms after a warm day and a cool evening, are all the signals nature sends to let us know summer is ending and fall has ar rived. And yes, in a true dance of nature, our bodies respond, and depending where we live, we may start to get a bit sluggish. Most especially in areas where the days get shorter and we are exposed to less sunlight, we will find our energy, our mood, and our cycles, rhythms, and bodily processes get a little out of Oursorts.bodies are hard wired to recognize the end of summer and the coming winter, and tend to do annoying things this time of year, like store fat, need more sleep, and crave more comfort foods that are higher in carbs and calories, but there is hope.Small changes in the intake of the foods we eat can coun teract the sluggish fall syndrome and result in higher energy levels, optimal weight management, and more harmonious patterns in the overall functioning of our body. Including some of the best fall foods can also alleviate the seasonal depression that sometimes wreaks havoc on our mental health during the colder months of the year.

This Harvest Moon Bread, actually tastes more like a cake than a bread, and it is also a vegan version, made with pump kin, apples, spices and aquafaba, or bean water, as an egg white substitute.Pumpkins with Vitamin A, C, and E are great supporters of our immune system, helping to ward off germs and illness during the colder months. Pumpkin is also one of the best sources for tryptophan, an amino acid that supports the pro duction of serotonin, helping to alleviate seasonal depression. OF THEMOONHARVEST

And of course, we already know an apple a day is beneficial for our health but the newest research points to a unique plant compound, epigallocatechin gallate, (EGCG) found in apples for helping with weight loss and for preventing inflammation and disease.Personally, think the dark chocolate glaze really is the ic ing on the cake though. I use pure dark chocolate, packed with many of the important minerals, including iron, magnesium, zinc, copper and phosphorus, and with very high level of flava nols and polyphenols. When this amazing glaze combines with the power of the pumpkin, apples, and spices, my Harvest Moon Bread, is the answer to staying healthy with the best of fall foods.

DARK CHOCOLATE GLAZE oz dark chocolate 1/2 cup water 1 teaspoon vanilla

I

HARVEST MOON BREAD cups all-purpose flour cups brown sugar cup chopped peeled of your favorite apples 1 cup pumpkin puree, canned or fresh cup aquafaba (chick pea or bean water) cup olive oil teaspoon vanilla teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 3/4 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon grated ginger root 1 teaspoon grated turmeric root 3/4 cup finely chopped almonds(optional) sprinkle of sesame seeds if desired

In a large bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking powder and cloves. In another bowl, whisk the pumpkin, aquafaba,(chick pea water), olive oil, vanilla, grated ginger root and grated turmeric root. Stir wet ingredients into dry ingredients until moistened. Fold in apples and if using almonds, fold almonds in at this time. Pour into a greased 9x5in. loaf pan. Bake at 325° for 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 hours or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pan to a wire rack to cool for 30 minutes more. Make Dark Chocolate glaze by melting dark chocolate, water and vanilla slowly over a double boiler. Cool for a few minutes then pour over Harvest Moon Bread and let is set until firm. I like to sprinkle with sesame seeds to add a little more power.

Valoie (‘val-oh-ah’) means “light.”

From leading the automotive industry to becoming beauty scientists, this couple is pioneering the world of omnisex skincare with gusto...and honey.

Jayme Valo adds, “We’d be managing a multi-million dol lar automotive manufacturing and retail facility during the day, and testing skincare formulations and meeting with chemists at night.”

Caroline Lawson Photography Amanda Anderson Photography

When Nick and Jayme Valo—long-time auto entrepreneurs— decided to venture into the unknown world of beauty, they knew it would be the start of a wild adventure.

During production, the Valoie brand evolved into three corner stone products—the AKTIV Pore Repair, Hydro-Honey Serum Moisturizer, and Rense Gel-Balm Cleanser—all bolstered by the healing power of honey. The Valo’s son even tested the products before going on Accutane, and his skin cleared instantly.

“It was terrifying,” Nick Valo laughs. “Jayme drove a race truck. Making the decision to get into the beauty industry was insane. Who does that?”

“Honey is one of the most underutilized natural skincare solu tions in the world for every skin type,” Jayme Valo says. “Our R&D team took the time to research how to protect and fortify the skin, while simultaneously nourishing and moisturizing for total balance at the deepest layers.”

Valoie currently outperforms even the most expensive treat ments on the market, all while rebalancing the skin’s microbiome.

But the couple’s vision was strong: simplified, yet elevated skin care designed for all genders. During their travels, sometimes ex tending half a year at a time, the pair noticed how difficult it was to maintain their beauty routines. Limited packing space made minimalism key, and shared skincare products an idea of interest.

At this point, multi-use omnisex products hadn’t been done well, and scientists and chemists needed to be convinced of the new technology. But it was possible, a challenge the entrepreneurs were more than ready to take on with a secret weapon—honey.

It’s the first time gender-neutral products of this level have made such a significant splash in the skincare scene. Even so, Jayme Valo says there is still resistance to the idea that the products are just as effective—simply because there’s no current omnisex de partment.“Whenpeople try our products they realize how good they are and how great their skin looks, and how great their spouse’s skin looks, and how great their teenage son’s skin looks, and then their mom steals it and looks like she’s never felt more rested, well, that’s the payoff,” Jayme Valo says. “Our products work on almost everyone.”

“Our personal dermatologist was amazed at how clear, yet hy drated his skin was. Likewise, our cousin had severe eczema and Hydro-Honey was the only thing that worked to properly smooth and rebalance her skin and diminish her dark spots. These are wildly different skin issues. Our family started referring to our products as ‘that magic stuff.’”

And, what about labor shortages, everywhere? We are wondering where everyone went and how they are making money. We are still feeling the pain of recovering from the pandemic financial setbacks.

FINANCEPERSONALGLOWUPBYNESHAPAI

Hey, do you remember 2008? If we can survive that, we can survive this. Now is as good a time as any to get your personal finances in order. Here are some things you can do right now to improve your personal finances. ¬¬If you can stick to these, you can start seeing the rewards of lower debt, savings, and a good credit score. Even though I help businesses and their finances, I get asked all of the time about how to manage personal finances and how one can master that part of their lives better.

YOUR

It seems like everything just went downhill after the pan demic. Inflation is on the rise (pun intended) and everything is super expensive, leading us to wonder if we are going to hit a recession. Airline tickets are through the roof. What cost me $1,000 to fly direct to Paris, now costs me $3,400 with one stop in Economy class. The trickledown effect is taking a massive toll on us as food and fuel costs have increased, passing those hikes to the consumer at restaurants and gas pumps.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help in this area. A really good advisor can help you create a plan and a way to save. Search for classes that offer free or low cost workshops on this topic as well. If you admire the way someone has managed their finances, ask them for mentorship. Ask them what they would have done differently when they were younger.

You want to retire at age 55? You want to go to Europe next Spring? You want to buy a house? You want to pay off debt? All of these require a commitment to sock money away. Prioritize these goals and then create separate savings bank accounts for these, in which monthly you automatically put a percentage aside in each bucket. I created buckets for vacation, taxes (business owners), and home improvement. You can make these anyway you want, but as long as you have a visual of what you are saving toward every time you open up your banking app, you will feel like you are accomplishing it. Even if you put $25 a month in a bucket, you are still saving.

INCREASE YOUR CREDIT SCORE

www.LuxLifestyle-magazine.com 55 BALANCE

ESTABLISH AN EMERGENCY FUND

CREATE A MONTHLY BUDGET

So, my financial advisor told me I needed to put aside 6 months of my monthly household budget aside. The three month rule no longer applies and that kind of set me reeling but I understand why now. However, if you have at least three that is a good start in my professional opinion.

PAY OFF DEBT FIRST Debt is the biggest obstacle for many people when it comes to reaching financial goals. First figure out the kind of debt you have and what makes the most sense to pay off. For example, I paid my car off and I plan on driving my dependable Hyundai into the ground. I locked in my mortgage rate at 3% so I don’t see a need to rush paying off my mortgage, as I plan on keep ing my house forever. You will need to sit down and look at all of your debt, and select those with the highest interest rates to pay off first and faster. Credit card debt is the worst kind of debt and should be paid off before anything else.

WRITE DOWN YOUR FINANCIAL GOALS IN DETAIL

FIND A GOOD FINANCIAL ADVISOR

Poor credit can make it harder for you to get a mortgage, rent an apartment, or even get a credit card. And, if someone does give you a loan, they will most likely do so with a higher interest rate. If you have fair or bad credit, defined as a FICO score of 669 or below, you may be wondering how to increase your credit score. Do not let this make you feel hopeless, as bad credit does not last forever. First off, get a copy of your credit report. You can get free copies of your credit reports every 12 months from each of the major bureaus through AnnualCreditReport.com. Dispute any credit errors, as you have the right under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Other things you can do to improve your score are: paying off past due balances, avoid ing new credit card applications, and contacting creditors for any temporary hardship programs they may have. You can do this. And now is the time. It may feel like an uphill battle but taking these minor steps will help you get back to where you once were or even where you want to be. I am rooting for you.

This may seem elementary and old school, but I have an Excel spreadsheet detailing my monthly household expenses, so I have an idea of what I need to survive. This includes my mortgage, my utilities, and anything else I spend on bills and basic living. I budget everything I spend, including my groceries/dining out. While I go over budget in a specific area, I am at least aware of where and how I need to cut back. Having a sense of actual versus budget can be very eye-opening. There are budgeting software apps you can use, like Mint, as well.

9. WHO OR WHAT HAS MADE YOU FEEL EMPOWERED RECENTLY?

Recently I’ve been very inspired by art. I love the Tiffany T collection - it’s perfectly wearable yet super chic.

6. WHAT HAS INSPIRED YOU CREATIVELY RECENTLY? WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE TIFFANY T COLLECTION?

I would love to have breakfast at Tiffany’s with Oprah and I would order everything.

1. WHAT WAS IT LIKE SHOOTING THE LATEST TIFFANY T CAMPAIGN? HOW DOES IT FEEL BEING THE FACE OF SUCH AN ICONIC BRAND?

7. HOW DO YOU FEEL WHEN YOU PUT ON A BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF JEWELRY?

www.LuxLifestyle-magazine.com

What I love most about the collection is that you can dress it up or wear it as every day jewelry. I love layering the pieces and mixing and matching!

4. JEWELRY IS A VERY PERSONAL THING. WHAT WAS YOUR VERY FIRST MEMORY OF TIFFANY & CO. OR ITS JEWELRY?

5. TIFFANY T EMBODIES UNWAVERING STRENGTH AND STRONGEST CONNECTION OF ALL, THE ONE WITH OURSELVES. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO YOU?

To me, I believe admitting when we aren’t strong is how we find strength. Being vulnerable and able to admit when we aren’t ok is a strength and that’s something I’m working on in my life.

When I put on a beautiful piece of jewelry I feel strong and beautiful!

Love makes me feel the most empowered. Love from family and love from my friends.

An evolution of an iconic collection, this marks Bieber’s first advertising venture for the jeweler since her appointment as a Tiffany & Co. global House ambassador last October. The campaign debuted this summer and was shot by Glen Luchford on location in Los Angeles. Bieber wears key designs from the T Collection, including new pavé diamond earrings and oversized pen dants, perfect for stacking and layering. More styles will roll out by end of year, with Tiffany planning much more for T Collection by 2023 and we can’t wait. LUX had the opportunity to share a few questions with Hailey on her exciting new campaign.

3.ARE YOU MORE OF A ROSE, YELLOW OR WHITE GOLD PERSON? I am definitely a yellow gold girl.

Shooting the recent campaign was amazing. I love working with the Tiffany team. It’s always been a dream of mine to be associated with the brand and I’m so grateful to be the face of Tiffany T.

2. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT THE TIFFANY T COLLECTION AND HOW WOULD YOU WEAR OR STYLE THE PIECES?

11. WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE RECEIVED ABOUT STAYING TRUE TO YOURSELF? The best advice I received would be, always be myself because people are drawn to me for who I am, not for anybody I try to be. That’s always stuck with me.

I definitely admire my Mom, her gentleness and her strength, and I admire her mom, my Grandma.

10. WHO ARE SOME OF THE WOMEN THAT YOU ADMIRE IN YOUR LIFE?

My very first memory was seeing my older sister receive her first piece of Tiffany jewelry for her 16th birthday. I remem ber thinking what a big deal it was that she got Tiffany!

Ashley Stark Home of fers carefully curated pieces that come together for a truly indi vidualistic point of view.

WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO LAUNCH ASHLEY STARK HOME AND HAS IT EVOLVED FROM YOUR ORIGINAL CONCEPT?

I have been the creative director of Stark for numerous years and have been constantly asked to design my own line. Once my Instagram took off I was continuously approached by a variety of great companies to do my own line. I finally felt like, “maybe I should, but I want to do it myself and do what I know best; everything home!” My original concept was rugs, but now it’s so much more and will continuously evolve.

Iris Apfel and her husband Carl actually trained me in the fabric industry. She would take me to all the buying meetings and tell me to follow my instincts. She always told me to be who I am and trust my own judgment. She was always a source of Inspiration for me.

Now, with ZHIVAGO in large retailers like Neiman Marcus and SAKS, Lara still follows her purist roots for creating her line. Lara says “Fashion shouldn’t expire – you should be able to invest in quality pieces that in ten years’ time are still current. The idea of al ways needing something new is foreign to me.” Replicating catwalk trends and designs

After our recent discussion, I realized her loyal fan base is due to more than just her bold designs. Kovacevich has a philosophy that “Fashion isn’t one sized, it’s for everyone and that you should feel celebrated and strong” that her brand centers around. Kovacevich says, “My favorite part of having my own label is helping people feel good about themselves. Hearing from our customers who post on so cial media or contact us to share their stories of how wearing ZHIVAGO makes them feel like the best version of themselves, is so grat ifying.” Her brand exposure has allowed her to donate things like a “year of Zhivago” for a charity supporting breast cancer.

ZHIVAGOTHEBELOVEDVEGANLUXURYLINE by Lisa Mele

Kovacevich has always been interested in fashion and recalls her earliest inspirations. “I used to spend a lot of time styling outfits to emulate my favorite stars as a teenager. When I was around 6 or 7, my older sister had a local label and she used to design clothes and cos tumes for dancers, drag acts and some of our most colorful local performers.” She believes this is what formed fashion for her and adds that, “These performers really owned their sexuality, and I loved it.”

80 www.

LuxLifestyle-magazine.comAsanavid fashion lover, I’m always on the hunt for the perfect outfit rather it be for a spe cial occasion or just for the sake of nailing my date night look. Oscar Wilde famously said, “One should either be a work of art, or wear a work of art,” and I’ve always believed fashion is wearable art. I was pleasantly surprised on one of my recent “hunts” to discover a brand that I had not yet heard of. The designs were feminine, yet powerful and I instantly appre ciated the ZHIVAGOartistry.isan Australian brand founded by Lara Kovacevich and is renowned for its perfectly tailored ready-to-wear, avant-garde separates and high-octane evening wear. They are a 100% cruelty-free, vegan luxury fashion house. The brand has attracted a following of leading ladies including Kylie Jenner, Lady Gaga and Paris Hilton. You can even find Ma donna in a ZHIVAGO jumpsuit in her video, God Control. Kovacevich has seen her cre ations rule the red carpets worldwide with her brand soaring since the pandemic.

82 www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com

ZHIVAGO was awarded Australia's most animal-friendly label and as a vegan herself, Lara has prioritized the impact her company is having on the world. “I wanted to be able to sleep comfortably at night & being a veg an myself for cruelty reasons I did notice that there were limited brands that adhered to a cruelty free philosophy,” Kovacevich says. Her motivation is not publicity, it’s a philoso phy that its just what needs to happen for any company that leaves a footprint. For years, ZHIVAGO has quietly used all recycled pack aging from polybags to hang tags. The dust bags are made from recycled satin and the dress linings are made from recycled plastic. As a next step for her growing company, Kovacevich will remain committed to vegan fashion and hopes to introduce accessories and shoes. “There aren’t many non-leather products in high end fashion. I’m going to fill that hole in the market,” she states.

“It’s the customer that tells me what’s working for them, and I follow that every season. I just want to create beautiful, unique, strong classic pieces that you can wear now or in 10 years’ time,” she adds.

88 www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com ART & CULTURE THE BOTTOM DOLLAR WITH HOUBEN R.T. By Lisa Mele USING CURRENCY TO CREATE WORKS OF ART. Lux recently spoke with Houben to discuss the details behind his inspiration and his journey as an artist.

I’ve always tried to draw realistically. I was never like most children, who are Picassos by age 5, and then at 10 are drawing bodybuilders and comics. Even then I had teachers not to applaud me, but to encourage me to seek and to work. I started art lessons at the age of 10. I was accepted into a school for gifted painters and after graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria I moved to New York City. DID YOU ALWAYS KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE AN ARTIST?

WHERE CAN READERS PURCHASE YOUR ARTWORK? My art can be obtained through art dealers as Bazal Gallery, Char lotte NC www.tfa-advisory.com or DTR Modern Galleries www.dtrmod ern.com with locations all over the East Coast. An addition, the Gallery Taipei www.insiangallery.com

The process is complicated and involves several stages before the completion of a painting. Initially, I select an image that comes from currency, and the next is preparing the canvass with acrylic accordingly. The third step is heat transfer of the image onto metallic foil. It requires several transfers to have a satisfactory image. The entire process goes back and forth and is not set in stone and involves chance and failures. YOU WORK IS WELL KNOWN FOR YOUR USE OF CURRENCIES –WHAT IS THE HISTORY BEHIND THAT? In my work I borrow images from banknotes. My paintings are a way to enter a dialogue with different subjects, different eras, and different ideologies. In currencies, many cultures are manifest in the most clear and direct way. Sometimes this communication is subtle, but often it is overt. As an artist, I translate and distill images on money resulting in an artistic product. This product will receive its own value and, ultimately, be moved into exchange in the same way as currency. Art and money are similar, in that both rely on trust to communicate, since the intrinsic value of painting, as with a printed bill, is just a fraction of its value. I use repetition of the same subject to highlight this connection fur ther. From early icon paintings through the Renaissance, to Pop Art and Superhero movies, repetition is common in art history, and highlights principles of desire, consumption, and commerce. The representation of money stands in for this desire; whereas previous generations of Pop Art reflected the desire for material objects, the depiction of images from currency may represent an evolution in consumption from material goods to net worth.

HOW DID YOUR JOURNEY AS AN ARTIST BEGIN?

I am just coming back from a solo presentation in Nantucket MA. My next stop will be in early September at the In Sian Art Gallery in Taipei, Taiwan where we are preparing a major solo show and a catalogue with essays . One Interesting detail will be the parallel between Andy War hol’s oevre and mine. Unlike the King of Pop , who dealt with goods, I am focused on what I’m surrounded by: finance. In a certain sense this is the traditional reaction of an artist to the environment around them.

I have an older sister, and naturally, she was better than me at every thing, except for drawing. This gave me a feeling of security and self-con fidence. I felt like becoming an artist might be a good idea. So, yes I al ways wanted to be an artist. WHAT HELPS YOU CREATE?

IS THERE A CERTAIN PROCESS THAT YOU FOLLOW THAT ALLOWS YOU TO BE CREATIVE?

ARE THERE ANY UPCOMING PROJECTS YOU ARE WORKING ON?

• Read reviews by local and national art critics, keeping in mind that reviews usually just reflect one persons opinion.

TIPS ON ART COLLECTING

• Get on gallery mailing lists so you'll be invited to openings and special events.

• Visit as many art galleries as you can, gallery staff can be helpful guides in your art education.

• Attend Art Fairs whenever possible.

• Read books on art history and books about collecting art.

Select works that are interesting and important. there are three important things to look for when considering a piece: critical attention, support from museums and curators, and commercial sales. You are really happy if you get two of these…but three is amazing!Everycity, regardless of size, has an art scene. Research and support the art-focused entities in your area, whether that means a museum, small gallery, non-profit artist collective, or cooperative art studio space. Getting involved with your local art nonprofits and galleries is a great way of immersing yourself into the art world, as it will inevitably open you up to other art-centric oppor tunities. Visiting public and commercial spaces also allows you to see so much art for free - good and bad. Don’t be afraid to seek out art you don’t like, as It’s equally important to see both good and bad art, because the more you look, the more you start to see the difference, and the more you realize what resonates with you. Below are a few quick tips that will help you demystify the art collecting process: By Irina Toshkova www.tfa-advisory.com

• Subscribe to art magazines.

AN EYE FOR ART

• Buy art because you like it and because it moves you, and because it will enhance your life.

• Visit and join your local art museums and non profit art organizations.

• Once you've educated yourself and have fallen in love with a work of art, buy it, take it home and enjoy it.

ART & CULTURE

• If you know art collectors, talk to them and find out what they know and what they’ve learned about collecting art.

Developing a taste in art is a skill that can be learned. Everyone can visit museums and galleries to study works of art or read books about an artist’s life and career. Developing a critical eye can take a while, but it is something that will exponentially improve over time, and it’s a fun process of self-exploration. Approach buying art as a journey of a lifetime. It’s not like buying a pair of shoes or other novelty items.

“To me,” Saul says. “The testament to a well designed home is when you are continuously surprised by a room you’ve seen many times. I gauge the success of my work by whether it’s timeless, beautiful, interesting and surprising.”

“I don’t aspire to any one particular style,” Saul says. “But rather, I find myself drawn to quality objects, whether artisanal, hand crafted or just plain well made. I love using antique or vintage pieces in all my projects, as it’s a way to add patina and the unexpected, and be a little more sustainable.”

And that diverse portfolio of interiors has made the designer so sought after. A fin ished product for Saul is never cookie cutter, but rather a merge of aesthetics that result in something entirely of her own creation.

“My inspiration comes from so many sourc es,” Saul says. “Outside of all the local art gal leries, museums and artistic and creative talent that Charlotte offers, I try to travel to inspiring cities stateside and abroad.”

After she’s ticked those boxes, Saul notes that she’s always up for a trip to the flea market.“It’sso interesting to see what people in oth er cultures collect and sell,” Saul says. “I don’t think I’ll ever tire of the hunt. I think this de sire to explore, see and collect informs my in teriors.”

Inside her own abode, Saul is surrounded with interesting objects that she’s collected over the years—whether they be flea market finds, or antique shopping discoveries. As a re sult, the designer’s home is 80 percent vintage.

“The relationships I forge with my clients is probably the most endearing and rewarding part of my job,” Saul says. “En trusting us to create an environment in which they feel most at home and comfortable and one that reflects their style and personality is why we give blood, sweat and tears to our proj ects. When we get the call to design their second and then their third property, it’s the ultimate compliment. We never take for granted how personal relationships and good design can impact our clients’ lives.”

A proclivity towards art is at the core of her design method ology, so Saul adds that she’ll always guide her clients towards pieces that will serve them twofold—enhance their homes and personal art collections.. However, final purchasing decisions are always left to the clients.

HABITAT

As for Saul’s favorite project? It’s always her most recent undertaking.

“When my team and I immerse ourselves in a project,” Saul says. “It takes months to years to complete, and we have worked countless hours on the project thinking about the nuances of each decision. It’s hard not to love the most recent project when it has engulfed your life.”

A VISIONARY CHALLENGE

HAUTE

“My most challenging item to place in interiors is high-end, custom rugs. It is usually very expensive, has a long lead time and requires the clients’ trust and imagination. Even with an actual 2’x3’ rug sample in hand, it’s hard to confirm that your vision is what is in the clients’ “mind's eye.” To fall in love with a sample is a much different experience than seeing a rug in person that you can fall in love with.”

www.LuxLifestyle-magazine.com 99

“My favorite item in interiors is lighting. It is as important as anything. Besides adding interest and personality, it adds low light, overhead light, mood light—ba sically all the layers the room needs to highlight the furniture, art and the subject.”

A DESIGNING DREAM

One of the most important green design principles is to reuse what you already have. Although Ashley and Ryan considered tearing out their existing kitchen, I encouraged them to keep the cabinetry and paint it. Built with solid wood and lovely inset drawers and doors, it was still in good condition and could hold up to many more years of use. New quartz countertops, a classic handmade subway tile backsplash from Walker Zanger, updated hardware, gorgeous lighting, and fun styling took a dated kitchen to bright, fresh, and classic. When asked what her favorite part of the design was, Ashley replied, “Do I have to choose? The [Circa Lighting] pendants over the island. The shape is so unique and interesting. They are subtle but still make a statement. We also love how much brighter the entire space is.” Because the new el ements have timeless appeal, the current kitchen has much more longevity than her old one.

A lush redwood forest rings with the sounds of nature--the song of a marbled murrelet perched upon the branch of a Doug las fir, the rustle of a black bear lumbering towards a huckleberry bush, the plop of a fat raindrop splashing into a puddle beneath the brush. It is a diverse and healthy ecosystem, where nature ensures its inhabitants provide the checks and balances needed to maintain forest health. Healthy forests help mitigate climate change as they soak up carbon dioxide which would otherwise be left in our atmosphere. They also provide oxygen, medicinal plants, food, and raw materials for humans.

By Claudia Ricciardone Photography by Laura Sumrak, Photo Stylist Kendra Surface

You have probably heard of “fast fashion”—cheap, mass pro duced, trendy clothing made with synthetic yarns that are de signed to be disposable. Did you know that there is also “fast furniture”? To keep up with rapidly changing design trends, manufacturers produce inexpensive, inferior quality furnishings, sometimes using lumber from poorly maintained forests. In fact, many forests are clear cut and left barren. These products are fre quently made with engineered materials, like particleboard, and chemicals, including Per-and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), known to have harmful health effects on humans and the planet. In fact, these chemicals often make their way into our drinking water. According to the EPA, nine million tons of furniture end up in landfills every year. Most of those furnishings were made within the last 15 years.

100 www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com HAUTE HABITAT WHERE ECO MEETS LUX

Unfortunately, furnishings produced inexpensively with materi als like MDF often cannot be repaired and end up in the trash.

And since it is relatively less costly to buy fast furnishings ver sus heirloom quality, consumers may end up chasing the trends more frequently as they tire of yesterday’s fad.

As an ecoluxe designer providing luxury interior design while keeping planetary and human health in mind, I recently com pleted two projects using green design principles. Clients Ash ley and Ryan Smithson, a professional couple living in upscale SouthPark (Charlotte, NC) hired me to design and remodel their kitchen. Ashley states, “We wanted a cohesive and timeless de sign with quality products that would last (and stand up to small children). That felt like a very tall order while working full-time and raising our young daughters. Not to mention, we had no clue where to start sourcing outside of big box stores.”

In decades prior, furniture was expertly crafted in solid wood and/or sturdy metals and built to last for generations. If pieces were damaged, they were repairable and worth the repair costs.

What does the health of our forests have to do with interior design? Our everyday buying and lifestyle choices directly and indirectly impact the environment—for better or worse. But the good news is that you can be an important part of the equation in fixing the problem.

www.LuxLifestyle-magazine.com 101 HAUTE HABITAT

When designing the Weddington, NC, home office of top Charlotte real estate broker Michelle Weeks of Helen Adams Realty, we utilized these same eco-oriented principals. Michelle had existing furniture pieces, including her office chair, desk, and swivel chairs. Although they worked well for her, she want ed a design plan to bring her office together because the original room felt unfinished. “I wanted a space for my office that felt chic, sophisticated yet functional and fun,” Michelle explains, “Being in real estate, I work odd and long hours, so I wanted it to look great and feel cohesive with our home.” Because ev ery space needs inspiration, I chose a colorful pair of chinoiserie panels printed on grasscloth to be the star of the show. Although this fanciful European interpretation of Asian art first became popular in the 17th century, it’s a style that still translates well in modern interiors. A crystal chandelier by Circa Lighting pro vides a touch of glam. To compliment the color palette of our inspiration, we chose a hand-knotted, 100% wool area rug from Artisan Rug Gallery in Charlotte. Wool is one of my preferred fibers for rugs. Not only is this natural material eco-friendly, but it’s also incredibly hard wearing. Since Michelle is a consummate hostess, it was import ant to source a rug that would hold up beautifully to the foot traf fic of frequent guests and clients. Well made, hand-knotted wool rugs can last for generations with proper care, unlike the now ubiquitous polypropylene rugs that often end up in landfills after a few years of use. While there is a place for synthetics, such as outdoor rugs (especially those made of recycled materials), my first choice for sustainability are natural materials.

102 www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com

While the green design principles mentioned here barely scratch the surface of designing with human and planetary health in mind, I hope they inspire you to consider the power your pur chasing choices have on the environment and human health. If you are looking for a designer or manufacturer who specializes in sus tainable design, check out the Sustainable Furnishings Council’s website: https://sustainablefurnishings.org.

Although it is common for designers to only work on projects that allow them to start from scratch, using what clients already own (when it works) is a great way to be eco-friendly. Michelle adds, “I loved that [Claudia] was willing to work with a few piec es I already had. I love that she wanted me to trust her to know what’s best. I love that it was exactly what I wanted when it was finished.”

MEET THE WORLD-CLASS DESIGNER KNOWN FOR HER SOULFUL APPROACH TO ASPIRATIONAL INTERIORS.

Possibilities seem to emerge from thin air the moment Kathy Kuo enters a space. The designer, CEO, TV personality, and in ternational home and lifestyle guru is renown for her holistic approach to decor—tackling the world of interior design with heart, soul and a heaping dose of high-touch experience. Her unique style? Classically-inspired, with a layering of in fluences, cultures and textures.

Growing up as the daughter of a diplomat who relocated of ten, Kuo gained an early love for turning each new house into a home—often with personal touches and meaningful objects from travels. Kuo notes that these early years were when her appreciation for good design and high-quality products was first born, before her passions blossomed into a full career.

“The spaces I create and fall in love with most are bright, fresh, and of course, aspirational,” Kuo says. “I enjoy layering in unexpected elements, and look for a heart-opening nuance that can take a bit of European, Moorish or Asian influence, and make it smile-inducing.”

So where does the designer derive her ideas? Kuo’s inspiration can best be understood by taking a step outside of everyday life.

“I found inspiration from things close to me,” Kuo says. “Even something as simple as textiles. I love to comb through fabric websites for captivating patterns, color or textures to see what it inspires.”

The Love Where You Live ethos of Kathy Kuo Home and Kathy Kuo Designs is deeply personal to the designer. Instead of pushing one specific aesthetic on her clients, Kuo understands that each set of design goals are different. Her process is centered around nurturing the customer re lationship, and embracing and elevating the personal style in each individual area.

While modeling in Milan, Spain and Germany after college, Kuo found herself entranced by the design cultures surrounding her.“I was captivated by their history, and how their architecture and interiors were a reflection of their foundation and life val ues at the time, whether it be their religion or their rulers,” Kuo says. “They told their stories through art and the beauty that they built around them, many of which are still standing today.”

During lockdown, proximity was a key factor in Kuo’s brain storm process.

“I’ve always found so much inspiration through my travels and the different cultures that I’ve been fortunate enough to ex perience throughout my life,” Kuo says.

114 www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com HAUTE HABITAT THE HEART OF THE HOME

Kuo adds that another longtime influence is the memory of the artisan craftsmanship she encountered during her stint in product development.

A quick scroll through the dreamy @kathykuohome Insta gram provides only a glimpse of the monumental work that goes into creating a finished space. Even so, it appears as though cre ativity is never in short supply for Kuo and her team.

“From Morocco to Portugal, to Cebu and Hanoi,” Kuo says. “Each filigree, brass dome or hand-woven rush seat tells a story of material integrity, creating beauty passed down through gen erations of artisans, tradesmen and cottage industries.”

Elegant, gracious, timeless, soulful and heart-opening.

But the momentum isn’t slowing any time soon. The designer—like a true visionary—un derstands the important balance between retrospection and forward-thinking. Ideas flow like water for Kuo, who is already knee-deep in her next creative project.

“There have been so many highlights throughout this journey,” Kuo says. “Every quarter and year since inception feels like an ever-iterative learning of self-reflection and growth.”

And milestones she has. Kuo notes that some of her proudest moments include her first sale, the inception of the brand in 2012, and the process of scaling a team and operations through the height of the pandemic—without the erosion of culture, values or principles.

“I’m proud and excited to be back to my original roots, designing proprietary collections with our brand partners,” Kuo says. “I can’t tell you how intoxicating it is to get back to my original love of product and design after so many years of creatively building a team, but not a truly tangible product. This experience has reinforced my longtime love for material integrity, sus tainability and traditional craftsmanship.”

But, sometimes, even the world-renowned designer is just like anyone else—turning to her phone, and apps like Pinterest and Instagram, to spark creativity.

HAUTE HABITAT

“There are so many wonderful designers and artists out there, and now we have the ability to openly share our projects, milestones and support for one another in real time,” Kuo says. “It’s truly proven to be such an uplifting community.”

By Katelyn Rutt photos courtesy of Cape Resorts Nestled on the shell-speckled shores of Crescent Beach, the nearly 10-acre Pridwin Hotel and Cot tages is a vision of serenity. The American resort has remained an East Coast vacation staple since 1927—holding a sort of timeless glamour, with its grand interiors, white accents, sweeping verandas, and bay vistas.

“I love Shelter Island,” Bashaw says. “Many of my college friends summer here so I always enjoy visiting. It’s a perfectly relaxed place.”

With the summery, holiday-esque feel of the island, Bashaw drew her initial inspiration from the resort’s goal of becoming an all-season haven.

The Pridwin—which boasts 33 guest rooms and 16 cottages— now features The Terrace, a breezy, open-air restaurant with magnificent bay views, and The Crescent Bar, with its bubble gum pink stools and cabana-inspired touches.

120 www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com ESCAPE

Aside from design, the hotel and cottages also received safety and environmental updates, as well as new wiring, refreshed plumb ing, and the addition of a main building elevator. Other property amenities—like the pool, which now offers saltwater, heating, an outdoor bar, and greenery—have been transformed by Bashaw in the most organic of ways. Throughout the renovation, Bashaw says she focused on maintaining the property’s historic integrity—without disman tling its classic charm or making it feel like a new resort. The designer adds that having the original owner’s children (Glenn and Gregg Petry) as partners on the project, as well as her own personal ties to the island, were vital.

The Pridwin recently underwent a multi-year transformation, supervised by Cape Resorts and its Vice President of Design Col leen Bashaw. One goal was paramount for the team during the process: staying in touch with the hotel’s beloved roots. With renewed charm and an even brighter future, the nearly centu ry-old resort looks to become a year-round luxury destination.

“This new chapter is about respecting the heritage of this grand hotel,” Bashaw says. “Yet making it fresh, without feeling too new.”

This laid-back design style, with a fondness for upscale el ements, translates to Bashaw’s own personal style, which she describes as “timeless” and “creative.”

www.LuxLifestyle-magazine.com 121 ESCAPE

In fact, the property’s open spaces were major design fod der for Bashaw.

“The buildings and land reminded me of an Adirondack camp,” Bashaw says. “I wanted the design to nod to a classic camp that would feel welcoming all year round.”

“I try to strike a good balance between fancy and laid back,” Bashaw says. “I like things to be chic, but casual. My personal style is similar to my design style—classic with a little ‘Pa tagucci.’”

Regardless, Bashaw always sticks to one main principle when tackling new design projects.

“Listen to the building,” Bashaw says. “The building always dictates colors through its lighting, style, and age.”

“No one constructs a new building with this much beauti ful public space today,” Bashaw says. “That is a testament to the character of the architecture. The largeness of the public spaces allows for multiple seating areas, which makes every thing feel more relaxed. I decorated it with a lot of linens, and I think that lends itself to a more calm vibe as well.”

THE ELEMENT YOU MOST ENJOYED?

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ROOM IN THE HOTEL AND WHY?

“Room 200—it has water views and pool views with windows on two sides. The natural light in the room is incredible.”

THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE?

“I really love the way the key box behind the front desk turned out. I used canary yellow paint to showcase the vintage green and red room keys that were original to the property.”

“Making the ground floor feel welcoming and appropriate for a hotel entrance. I think we accomplished that with the architectural elements but also with the design of the front desk, the wallpaper, and the history hall.”
