10 YEARS IN THE MAKING With over 10 years in the high-end Dubai real estate market, Luxhabitat is now looking to expand and develop our brand. We have always been driven by the quality of our product, agents, branding, and technology, and now it’s time to take it to the next level by our international expansion efforts. Luxhabitat’s biggest contribution to the Dubai real estate market has been defining quality properties for the broader market and creating a value for technology in the local Proptech space. Area, market value and design are the key indicators for our properties; and a greater part of 2020 will be spent fine tuning our brand and redefining quality as the market shifts and new supply continues to surface in advance to the much awaited Expo 2020 and beyond. Another strong point for us to focus

on is technology and streamlining our business across some of the world’s greatest cities. From inception, technology has been at the forefront and key differentiator for us as a business. We have successfully developed and implemented the most powerful marketing platform in the UAE and hope to develop this further in the coming year. The focus will be on addressing and solving the ‘pain points’ for agents across the entire sales process, so they can do what they are best at - cultivating client relationships and selling. Without sacrificing the human touch, we want to create a culture of transparency, trust, high levels of service, and customer feedback-driven changes. All of this marks the beginning of a very exciting 2020 at Luxhabitat. - Oriol Font, CEO, Luxhabitat

HARMONY IN YOUR HOME USE THESE FENG SHUI & VASTU PRINCIPLES BY EXPERTS TO BRING BLISS TO YOUR HOME The way you design your home can have a huge impact on energy. For decades, people have used ancient Asian sciences such as Chinese Feng Shui & Indian Vastu to set up their homes as well as choosing the right plots in order to ensure that their end-use home leads them on to greater prosperity. We speak to two experts on both Feng Shui and Vastu to help debunk the many myths surrounding both practices and delve into why one should consider either of them while designing their home. FENG SHUI According to Feng Shui master Susanne Schutz, owner of Suzhong Consulting and a regular consultant at well-being centre Life N’ One, having a Classical Feng Shui Master is required to be able to diagnose what changes need to be done to your home. In order to do this, it is essential to have the following: (1) A detailed house plan with an interior layout of your house/apartment, which is to scale and shows doors, windows and all rooms within the house. This plan

can be drawn up either by hand or on the computer, and should be emailed to the consultant prior to the site visit (if possible). (2) Birth Data of all residents (residential) or key personnel (commercial) of that property (3) Birth Data of the property: The month and year the property’s construction was completed, and (4) All questions and points of inquiries you have regarding the property. If you plan to move into a new home, seek a renovation, or plan to build a home where you will be living in for the foreseeable future, it would be ideal for you to consult with a Classical Feng Shui Master in order to determine from the outset how you should distribute certain rooms and what needs to be done to align the Qi (energy) of your home with your life goals to ensure long-term wellbeing. “Classical Feng Shui is an ancient science that studies how Qi (cosmic energies) can be harnessed to benefit our internal and external environments. Qi is intangible, yet its effects permeate virtually every aspect of our lives. Classical Feng Shui – that is authentic Feng Shui as it has been

15

THE INTERIOR DESIGN

is not a one-solution-fits-all approach.” says Schutz. However, for a start, you can first assess your home from a basic point of view before calling in an expert. Schutz suggests examining your home within a 1km radius and to check if there are any obvious negative features that make you feel uncomfortable looking at them – for e.g. a sewage system, a busy highway, pylons next to the house, polluted water sources, etc. Any such features will lower the Feng Shui potential of your home. On a layout level, Schutz claims that Feng Shui is not object-based. “Too many “new agers” practice a “color/numbers/love corner/ approach” to Feng Shui, which is simply ridiculous and has absolutely no basis in the actual science that Classical Feng Shui is. Because of this, there is no common enhancer that can be used for every home.” she says. “True Feng Shui is an extremely complex science that evaluates not just your home, but most importantly the environment

16

W W W.LU X H A BI TAT. A E

you find yourself in, the energy spots found in this environment, yourself and your energetic interaction with your home, as well as the goals and objectives you would like to achieve with a Feng Shui audit.” In recent years, a simplified version of Feng Shui has taken root in the West. This so called “New Age Feng Shui” has been largely reduced to a fashion or trendy approach that no longer follows the correct and traditional principles. New Age Feng Shui focuses on colors, “object placement” and interior design – applications that have no foundation in the traditional concepts and methodologies of Classical Feng Shui. Classical, or Authentic, Feng Shui, as opposed to New Age Feng Shui as it is practiced in the West, deals with matters of energy in our environment and is personal to each individual. VASTU Vastu expert Sujith Sukumaran shares a few cardinal rules that work for Vastu. Similar to Feng Shui, Sukumaran also says Vastu operates differently for each type of property. However, here are a few general tips he has shared that you need to look out for while considering investing in a new home or considering refurbishing your old one. These include preferring East-facing houses, avoiding a North-South configuration due to excessive polarity, and avoiding distress sale-based purchases unless you’re clear about the antecedents. “Proper natural light and ventilation hold great importance in Vastu, so make sure there is ample sunlight coming into the house and that the house has good cross ventilation. A North or East-facing flat with windows and balconies in either of these two directions is ideal. The morning sunlight brings positivity and is rich in ultraviolet rays. While afternoon infrared rays are harmful to health so having windows and entrance in South or west is not recommended. he windows on the south or south-western wall must be

small in size with a horizontal shading device to protect the interiors from the harmful rays of the Sun. According to Vastu, the house should not have a common wall with the neighboring house, as this creates mixed energies, so open space should be left on all four sides of the building. Since sun rays are not that harmful in the North and East, more open space should be left towards the North and East side of the building as compared to the south and west sides. The rooms should be airy, well lit, bright, and clean.” says Sukumaran. “This rule also extends to the corners of each room. The rooms of your house should preferably be square or rectangular and the centre of the house should be an empty space. All heavy furniture should ideally be placed in a South-West direction. In the case of a duplex home, the stairs should be facing the same direction. Avoid keeping plants and water features like a water fountain, aquarium, painting depicting water, etc. in the bedroom. Placing a mirror in the bedroom that reflects the sleeping couple is a strict no-no.” Prices vary according to the size of the property. Contact: Sujith Sukumaran, T: +971 50 566 9494

The characteristic cut, gives Mito its unparalleled look and revolutionary lighting technology lets you direct the luminaire as if by magic. Mito Largo offers a unique take on lighting, equipped with an LEDarc luminaire with gesture control, continuously adjustable color temperature and up/down fading. The subtle definition of its cut highlights the artistic workmanship and emphasizes its careful attention to detail, allowing Mito to appear as a delicately crafted piece of jewelry. SEAMLESS INTEGRATION BLAU BY GANDIA BLASCO REFLECTS A MEDITERRANEAN SENSE OF LIVING The Blau collection seeks to develop the tradition of outdoor furniture, linking with the Mediterranean architecture and way of inhabiting. Created in collaboration with Fran Silvestre Architects, the collection is an innovated tradition, made with a construction system stem based on the assembly of extruded aluminium sections. Only a single type of knot is used that fixes all the joints of the different pieces of the collection and which hides the pins that fix the sections. All the pieces are made using this growth system, from a chair to an artificial tree. This instant growth tree, with no roots, fits in to illuminated urban environments, enclosing them and generating shadows. Blau is a family of objects that have an additional quality that is difficult to specify, which refers to the value of the pieces as

objects, with the value of them being contemplated. The range has a selection of cushions and seat pads that have removable covers. They come in a range of textures and colours. Choose the perfect one for your outdoor space: from pure white to turquoise, coral, mint, sand and stone, among others. The chaiselongue in particular, features an elegant, subtle design with a marked architectural character. You can combine this piece with others from the BLAU collection to create the perfect outdoor ambience you want, from terraces to the poolside. The club chairs also make a great addition to small garden spaces. Gandia Blasco has yet again come up with a timeless series of pieces one can enjoy over the years. SUSTAINABLE LUXURY HERE’S A GUIDE ON LOCAL ECO-FRIENDLY HIGH-END BRANDS THAT CHAMPION SUSTAINABILITY

While sustainability seems to be a buzzword of the year, it is often difficult to find covetable luxury fashion brands that carry a similar ethos in the region. Until now, that is. With the Expo 2020 around the corner, Dubai has never been more focused on the concept of sustainability. But how does one define what sustainable is in terms of fashion? It’s not only about ethically sourcing fabrics and recycled materials, its also making sure that fair wages are paid to its workers and artisans. Brands are also looking into other avenues such as cruelty-free or vegan fabrics, addressing toxic pesticide & chemical use , energy efficiency and minimising water use. Stella McCartney remains at the forefront of sustainability in fashion because of the brand’s hard work towards recreating conventional materials. They have re-engineered cashmere and are currently attempting to make synthetic spider silk as part of their collaboration with Bolt Threads. They also make clothes out of recycled nylon and polyester and

24

W W W.LU X H A BI TAT. A E

have renewable energy powered offices. Stella McCartney has also stopped selling its fragrances in China in lieu of their 100% cruelty free brand. Luxury watch brands are also following the sustainable trend, looking for the right materials to produce watches. As most of the watches in the luxury category are often handmade, the focus has changed to the materials used. Panerai has launched the Mike Horn Special Edition watch, which is limited to just 19 pieces worldwide, with its crown protecting device, bezel and case back all made of Eco-Titanium. Its light, but strong, bracelet is made of recycled plastic. Breguet has taken a slightly different approach, through collaborating with Race for Water, along with the intention of raising awareness of ocean preservation. As part of the brand’s sustainability efforts, German art-activist Liina Klauss, who lives in Hong Kong, also created the largest art installation the city’s ever seen, named “Trash-Land-Art”.

Famous diamonds luxury brand Tiffany, for example, operates in an industry that has come under fire for bringing conflicts to communities in Africa. In order to positively change this perception, the high-end brand was one of the first big jewellery names to source metals and diamonds from responsible mining companies. Tiffany now has a zero-tolerance policy for purchasing diamonds from countries with human rights infringements. They also have a philanthropic foundation working on reef conservation and awareness for responsible mining. Locally, there are some luxury brands making waves in the sustainable movement. Asmaraia, a brand that’s Dubai & Moscow-based, makes clothes made from organic cotton, recycled polyester, and crueltyfree fabrics. The eponymous brand debuted last year at Arab Fashion Week and is a contemporary brands with a focus on Middle Eastern values. If you’re looking for swimwear, Joseph & Alexander is a great local brand that makes swimwear from the ocean’s plastics with eco-friendly ink. The brand recently collaborated with Emirates too.

Another interesting local brand is by Bahraini designer and environmental engineer, Rawan Maki. All of the items from her collection are produced only once, thus preventing waste and simultaneously creating a truly limited edition piece, which translates to a true luxury product. The brand uses products that are either GOTS certified, farmed organically, made with low impact dyes, or consume low amounts of energy during their production process. Some of the materials have recycled elements (such as recycled polyester). Each look has its own unique sustainability story. In terms of high-end lingerie, check out Studio Asanawa, an unconventional multi-label lingerie concept based in the UAE with conscious consumerism and design at its core, walking the line between product, art and culture. Founded by Emirati Najla Busit and Culture Writer Chantal Brocca, the ladies source their products from emerging designers and small ateliers.

PAMPER YOURSELF CURATED PRODUCTS & EXPERIENCESTHAT PAY HOMAGE TO THE REGION. You can choose to indulge in many experiences that are luxurious in Dubai, but there are some unique collaborations with some of your favourite brands with a local flavour that are made uniquely for the city. SMELL A latest prized collaboration is the limited edition Ex Nihilio x Yasmin Al Mulla perfume. Curated by Emirati entrepreneur Yasmin Al Mulla, the fragrance was created by taking inspiration from traditional houses to skyscrapers, from antique to modernity, the beautiful Dubai. Carrying notes of Italian bergamot, lychee, peony & musk, the packaging is absolutely sublime, right from the golden cap with a Burj Khalifa silhouette engraved in mother of pearl, to the wooden background on the bottle that represents all seven emirates.

SAVOUR If you’re a chocolate lover, then step no further than Mirzam. This chocolate factory located in Al Quoz produces the most sublime of chocolates. A must-have is the bars from their Emirati collection, which involves a delectable & indulgent selection of Rgag - a 52% milk chocolate filled with pieces of crispy Arabic ‘Rgag’ bread, Khabeesa - a 62% dark chocolate with finely chopped dates, cardamom & cinnamon together with house baked and crumbled biscuits, Aseeda - white chocolate, toasted until it’s deep brown to create a caramelised flavour and then spiced with cardamom, Halwa - a 62% dark chocolate with pieces of crunchy saffron and rose infused caramel brittle, filled with almonds, pistachios and dates, and Loqaimat - a 45% milk chocolate filled with tiny puffed quinoa, which have been caramelised in UAE produced date syrup.

INDULGE Dubai is no stranger when it comes to exclusive spa treatments, but the Away Spa located at the newly opened W Palm Jumeirah offers a truly unique atmosphere to unwind. An eclectic space, very much like the rest of the W hotels, the spa emulates the playful vibe of the hotel to present a non-traditional spa destination. The spa features a central light feature in the shape of a water drop that hovers over the spa’s mix and mingle space and features a ‘Beauty Bar’. The spa’s pearl-inspired interior reportedly echoes the pearl diving history of Dubai while the dark mosaic tiles emulate the jewel tones seen by divers under the ocean. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind experience. If instead you are looking for a more ‘onsen’ like experience, head to Qua Spa at the popular Caesar’s Palace Bluewaters. It offers a unique

Iyashi Dome experience, which allows you to burn up to 600 calories every session of 30-60 minutes. It’s inspired by a Japanese tradition called ‘Suna Ryoho’, where the locals bury themselves in the sand near hot springs on the beach to eliminate toxins. There’s also The Psammo Concept Quartz Bed which focuses on hot sand therapy. If you’re looking for something with a local flair, head over to the Mandarin Oriental, Jumeirah for their Royal Saffron treatment, complete with blends of exotic 24k gold, saffron and mogra sourced directly from artisan growers and distillers. These ingredients not only assist with cellular regeneration, pigmentation and rejuvenation, but also work towards hormonal balance and emotional equilibrium. THE AFICIONADO TRAVEL

EXPERIENCE THE EXTRAORDINARY HERE ARE SOME UNBEATABLE EXPERIENCES TO ADD TO YOUR TRAVEL BUCKETLIST True travelling is always associated with experiences, and this is why more and more companies and hotels have begun to tailor experiences to their patrons by trying to offer them a unique insight into the place’s culture, history or traditional practices. As we travel to seek ourselves, we also aim to try things that lie outside our comfort zone. This could be anything from renting a private island for diving, or going to a wellness retreat in Costa Rica. Most popular hotel royalty programs are also now focusing on redeeming points with experiences rather than quintessential hotel stays. Rewards can include front row seats to the opera or even a local excursion. The Peak + Skift Experiential Travel Report states that most people are now looking for more immersive, local, authentic, adventurous and/or active travel. Jamie Wong, the Founder/CEO of Vayable, an online sharing portal that pairs travelers with its network of local

citizens around the world offering opportunities to experience their destination as much as possible like a local says the most inspired types of travel today are those that “you would never find in the traditional tourism industry, such as going thrifting with a former Jean-Paul Gaultier designer in Barcelona, or eating with a food blogger in Queens.” Adventure tourism alone has grown 65% over the past 10 years, according to a report by the 2019 Adventure Tourism Market Study, co-produced by George Washington University and the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA). The growth is attributed in part due to the rise of interest in soft adventure by a wider range of age demographics than in previous decades. The survey states: “Nearly 54% of travelers plan to participate in an adventure those transformative experiences is driving business in almost every

travel segment in the tourism and hospitality industry today.” Many responsible experience-seeking travelers also opt for adventure tours that contribute towards the local community. As these experiential companies grow, luxury travel seekers are also seeking unique experiences. According to Fairmont’s 2018 Global Luxury Traveler Insights Study, an online survey of 2,725 luxury travelers from France, United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, China, and United Arab Emirates, travelers prioritize experiences over brands, with two out of three considering it important to have experiences not readily available to everyone (65%). It is with this in mind that we have curated this special list of experiences for you. Have you ever considered renting a yacht charter to the Arctic? According to David Castera, Director of Dakar, “Africa, South America and now Asia. The third chapter of its history is particularly fascinating and exciting for a race focused on exploration like the Dakar. I got to experience these shudders of anticipation myself 25 years ago when I first rode into the Sahara with my hands on the handlebar. I am now embarking on a new adventure in the Middle East from the nerve centre of the organising teams."

oneself: all these aspects will naturally be glorified on this territory made for rally-raids”, added Castera.

“By going to Saudi Arabia, it is of course that aspect that fascinates me. I'm convinced that such a feeling will be shared by all the riders, drivers and co-pilots. As the director of the event, it's a massive challenge to be faced with a blank page with limitless possibilities.”

The rally will commence in Jeddah, which will also be the launchpad for drivers, riders and Dakar’s crews. It will then move along the red sea coastline, through challenging sand dunes and mesmerising landscapes. It will pass the Red Sea project, a mega tourism project featuring 90 islands. The race will also cover desert and mountain terrains in Al Qiddiya.

“We are spoilt for choice. Sports, navigation, a will to surpass

Stretching over more than two million square kilometres, Saudi Arabia is the largest country in the Middle East and boasts a mosaic landscape that will provide the Dakar competitors paces on all fronts: driving and riding, navigating and endurance.

The contestants will also cover Neom, a city in the northwest of the kingdom. Riyadh, the capital and largest city of the country will host them for a single day which will be used for them to rest. According to Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal, chairman of the Saudi General Sports Authority, “While we are very pleased to have signed a multi-year agreement to bring the Dakar Rally to Saudi Arabia, we are excited to welcome the world to the Kingdom to see and experience the breathtaking scenery.” “The addition of rally to the growing, high-calibre, international sports calendar of the Kingdom is a true testament to the objectives of Vision 2030, sending a strong message of openness and welcome to the world through sports, tourism, and culture."

"It will be a journey through breathtaking scenery, unknown landscapes, unexpected challenges, untold stories and unbelievable memories. It will write a new chapter and tell a new story, a story of how the greatest race on Earth and the most ambitious social mission on the planet - Vision 2030 – united to redefine the human adventure. Dakar is a strong message of openness and welcoming that the Kingdom wants to send to the world through Sports, Tourism and Culture. It is also another testament of its vision and ability to host the biggest sporting events and a chance for the whole world to see the real Kingdom, to meet its generous people and to witness first-hand how it is driven by ambition, professionalism and the desire to succeed at the highest levels", he added. WHAT TO EXPECT DURING EXPO 2020 AN AMAZING SHOW AWAITS YOU, LAUNCHING IN OCTOBER 2020 The World Expo of Expo 2020 is scheduled to be hosted in Dubai for more than six months, from October 2020 to April 10, 2021. It will also have a dedicated metro station of its own and the trains will be scheduled in a way to transport 36,000 passengers per hour.

The site will feature three thematic districts based on sub-themes of 'Opportunity', 'Mobility', and 'Sustainability'. Each district will be anchored by a thematic pavilion on the same subthemes.

The majority of the construction of the pavilions of the Expo 2020 has already been completed and the ones that are remaining are expected to be done by the end of 2019. While construction of pavillions like that of India, UK, and Oman are under their way, it is being said that some of the pavilions will be retained.

The focal point for the celebrations will be the Al Wasl Plaza which is located at the heart of the Expo 2020 site. Visitors will be seen gathering here so as to witness the celebrations and cultural events from the 192 countries participating.

Lifting such a large and heavy structure involved a huge number of variables. Something as simple as a shift in the direction of the wind or change in air temperature could have had a big impact on our calculations, so constant monitoring and reassessment was essential throughout the process. The crowing of the dome was a key milestone for Expo 2020, while other permanent expo-led constructions that are on track will be completed.

LUXHABITAT WINS BEST WEBSITE FOR THE 4TH YEAR IN A ROW, BY THE ARABIAN PROPERTY AWARDS LUXHABITAT was honoured at the Arabian Property Awards in 2019 for their Best Website in Arabia. This year marked the 28th year of the awards. The Arabian Property Awards are the largest, most prestigious, and widely recognised programme throughout the region.

Our platform remains SEOfriendly & design-led. We work regularly on optimum performance of our website and now receive better traffic than most media houses through our content strategy.

Commenting on the win, Head of Technology, Francisco Canete commented, “It’s great to see the hard work by the marketing team commended on an international level.
