LETTER FROM THE

publisher

The spring issue of Las Vegas Woman magazine introduced our year-long theme: Unmask Yourself. I sincerely hope you enjoyed all of those articles and are ready for round two with our summer issue. The theme centers around taking off your layers and becoming your most authentic self. With summer upon us, it is the perfect time to remove some layers—clothing, skin, spirit. Within these pages, we feature articles related Photography by B&T Capture/TrinaMarie to beauty. Not only the beauty that you see when looking in a mirror, but the beauty that radiates from the inside out and how to be confident in your own skin. You’ll find informative articles that will test your old mindset or patterns, such as multi-tasking. Something we, as women, are experts at. Multi-tasking is practically a requirement to managing our lives and our family’s lives, but here we talk about monotasking …what is that you ask? Read on and you’ll find out. The cover story features a mother-daughter team as they work together in the male-dominated industry of commercial real estate. They show us that success doesn’t come without hard work. This story speaks to me, as I work on this magazine with my mother, Ruth. The ability to share our success together is priceless. I encourage you to process the articles you’ll find in this issue of Las Vegas Woman magazine and allow them to provide new direction as you let your passions out. Let’s get out there and not be afraid to be visible. Perfection is not possible, and it can be so debilitating for us. Embrace your imperfections by stepping into them proudly; we all have them. How do you want to show up in this world? I hope that you’ll find value in the pages within this magazine to help you make that determination. Thank you for allowing us to lead, motivate and celebrate you … one issue at a time. #goshineyourbrightself Gratefully,

Stephanie Kocher

How you do ANYTHING is how you do EVERYTHING.

LETTER FROM THE

managing editor With this issue, I have enjoyed reading the articles that relate to inspiring women and being worth more than what you see in the mirror. My 5-yearold daughter depends on me to fill her cereal bowl in the morning, drive her safely to school, give her hugs and kisses. What I look like in the mirror is not relevant to fulfilling her needs. We hope this issue helps you feel less alone in anything you may be going through and more satisfied with yourself, from the inside out. Within these pages, we feature articles that: Lead: The cover story featuring Soozi Jones Walker and Bobbi Miracle, a mother-daughter team taking the commercial real estate world by storm, gives inspiration to women that hard work pays off and they are enough in their lives and careers. Motivate: I can relate to Meghan Bailey’s “Bored of Me” project. I’ve known her for years, we got married around the same time and have children the same age, both of which have impacted my path. Following along with her journey to finding herself once again is comforting to know that, yes, someone else feels the same way. Celebrate: Dr. Cynthia Payne embraces the joy of traveling in our Escape to Sedona piece. Sedona is on my must-visit list and it is only a short drive from Las Vegas. But most of all, this summer, I invite you to unwind, disconnect, and celebrate you. Spend a few extra minutes doing the things you love and fewer minutes doing the things you don’t. Let your laundry pile up one more day, make that pit stop for an ice cream or a cocktail. But whatever you do, don’t forget your sunscreen. We would love to hear what you think! Please drop me a line at editor@lvwomanmagazine.com. Share your stories and ideas with us.

INSPIRING WOMEN to live their best life How One Local Woman is Leading the Way

As the leader of LisaListen, Lisa Ferrell inspires women to set and achieve goals and live their best life. She is committed to living a balanced life and sharing her expertise to help others do the same. Born and raised in Salt Lake City, Lisa got her start at a local ABC affiliate, kicking off 35 years in broadcast sales and marketing. She moved to Las Vegas 22 years ago and found the man of her dreams, her husband Jesse Ferrell. Together, they run JessTalk Speaking & Coaching Firm, a motivational speaking and performance coaching company. “We focus on leading leaders in a world of shifting priorities,” says Lisa. “Our chief aim at JessTalk is providing the best systems, tools and processes for leaders and their teams to live into their highest vision.” Among her many roles at JessTalk, Lisa leads LisaListen, a subdivision specializing in serving women. “As a Success Coach, I support and inspire women, connecting with them where they are and inspiring them to live their best life now,” she says. Through her work, Lisa is living out her passion to help women love themselves first and discover their purpose in life. Using a series of questions called the ‘Ask Now’ system, Lisa supports her clients as they work to become accountable to achieve their needs and wants and be their best selves. “I offer scholarships to women I feel need and can benefit from our services, but are not yet ready to invest in them,” Lisa remarks. “Many of these women have grown significantly since I’ve known them, which leaves me with

a great deal of personal and professional satisfaction.” Her favorite part of the job is helping women achieve success, whether it’s working with them as a client or being a mentor through community organizations like the National Association of Women Business Owners or United Way’s Women’s Leadership Council. While living a life of helping others achieve success may mean putting individual wants aside, Lisa has developed a strategy to balance her time between supporting her clients and reaching for her own goals. “Jesse and I set an ultimate goal of living a life of being what we call ‘Bio-Balanced’,” she says. “We strive to be physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually and financially balanced at all times.” With tools like the “What Matters Most Portfolio,” a measure of alignment based on values and daily roles, and the “12 Week Year” system, a list of her top three personal and professional goals over 12 weeks and strategies to achieve them, combined with weekly meetings to determine goals for the week, Lisa stays on track with her goal of a balanced life and “walking the talk” of what she teaches. Lisa lives by some key advice to achieve this. “Live your life to the fullest every day. Today is all we know we have. Be joyful and happy. Make sure to communicate what is on your mind with your friends and family. Tell them you love them. You don’t want to live a life of regrets. Lastly, give your smile away, it costs nothing and can make a person’s day.”

Bored of me

PROJECT Phase Two

By Meghan Bailey

Something interesting happens when you start living on autopilot. Your thoughts and actions become so repetitive and homogenous that you begin to subconsciously build walls around your soul. You close off the possibility of anything new; you stop living life to the fullest. There’s no longer the chance of meeting new friends, experiencing new activities, traveling to new locations and allowing new dreams to blossom. You stop remembering the things in your past that brought you joy because you are too busy just getting by. My husband recently shared with me some feedback he had received about my first “Bored of Me Project” article. It is always interesting to hear how people perceive your words versus how you wanted them to be received. During our conversation, he stopped me and put his hand on mine, looked in my eyes and said, “No matter what people say, I can tell you, you have life back in those eyes now.”

I hadn’t reflected too much on the project because I was truly letting things happen organically. A couple of weeks after my husband told me about the new-found life in my eyes, the first epiphany of this project hit me out of nowhere. Well, not nowhere, but during the 4th inning of a kickball game we put together with friends. I would never have thought about putting together a kickball game because that’s the kind of thing we did in high school or college. There wasn’t a place for it in adult life, right? Wrong. When I decided to take my life off autopilot back in January and let this year happen spontaneously, we met some new friends. When we were together, we all thought it would be fun to play kickball. I inserted new friends with old friends, something I typically plan around people’s personalities and how they would match up, but not this time. We loved them all and wanted to share life with them. I stopped worrying about plotting out the whole activity and lived it. Guess what? It worked out! Since then, I have realized that these vast goals I made for myself during this project were hitting me in the face daily. By spending my days being “busy” and feeling like that was an accomplishment, a badge of honor, a reason for existence, I lost what mattered: spontaneity and being present. Sitting back and letting things happen as they will, all while being present in everything I am doing has allowed me a newfound passion for life, to give in to what I love more easily and to find that life now is just fuller. This project has helped me re-evaluate everything I’m doing and to find the purpose of it, even if that purpose is simply being happy. Being busy has given the appearance that I am doing all the right things, but anyone who inspected my life a little closer would see that I was holding myself back from taking hard actions to reach the dreams I had. This is all a work in progress but learning to let life happen with a little more spontaneity and less stress about making sure everything is perfect, I have more time to activate my potential and achieve goals I had previously been neglecting. As this journey continues, I can’t even start to explain the excitement each new day is bringing.

No matter what people s a y, I c a n tell you, you have life back in those e y e s n o w.

KNIGHT in shining armor Sharing the Goals of the

VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS and The Folded Flag Foundation By Jennifer Bradley Bill Foley, Chairman, CEO and Governor of the National Hockey League’s 31st franchise, the Vegas Golden Knights, had a vision to build a winning team in the desert while cultivating a philanthropic culture to strengthen the community. The man with a heart of gold inspired two non-profits: Vegas Golden Knights Foundation and The Folded Flag Foundation, each raising dollars and awareness for key local and national issues. The Vegas Golden Knights Foundation, led by President John Coogan, serves as the primary charitable link between the Vegas Golden Knights hockey team and the Las Vegas community. The foundation is focused on five priorities ranging from physical, social and emotional growth of Las Vegas youth to focusing on the Las Vegas military, first responders and their families; and fighting hunger and homelessness. The foundation raises money for various local non-profits with out-of-the-box fundraising events: 51/49 game raffles, mascot appearances, and signed memorabilia for auctions. This inaugural season generated several thousands of dollars for charities including Grant a Gift for Autism, Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation, The Folded Flag Foundation, Vegas Jr. Golden Knights youth hockey teams, and After School All Stars. “Our goal for 2018 is to ensure the Vegas Golden Knights Foundation is delivering the highest possible community impact to Vegas through creative fundraising, partnerships, and outreach,” said John Coogan, President of the Vegas Golden Knights Foundation and The Folded Flag Foundation. “The Foundation represents the heart of the team and we wish to give back to the community, as Vegas has embraced our team with immense enthusiasm, spirit and open arms.” The non-profit organization provides 100 percent of its donations directly to Gold Star Families in need. Scholarships and grants are available to qualifying spouses of fallen heroes and their children to assist with a wide range of educational needs. The Foley Family Food & Wine Society supports the team and the Foundations through fundraising and philanthropic efforts, including flavors and experiences, such as wine and culinary tours and special tastings. Many of their wines are generously donated and featured at various charitable events in the community. Bright lights

BRILLIANT SKIN By Jennifer Battisti

Between the neon lights of the Strip and the 300 days of sun in Las Vegas, there is no shortage of brilliance in our city, but because of the harsh temperatures and dry climate, your skin might not feel quite as luminous. Get glowing this summer with these five desert-proof tips to sporting radiant skin, even in the triple-digits. We’ve compiled the most effective techniques and rituals to keep you feeling like a Mojave goddess, in any season.

Rejuvenate:

No number of pricey products will work to hydrate and nourish if there is a build-up of dead skin cells. Exfoliation is the middle child of the skin care routine, often skipped in favor of a cleanser or moisturizer; however, it is the single most effective way to improve the texture, color, and absorption of other products. Try June Jacobs Perfect Pumpkin Peeling Enzyme Mask three times a week to keep skin fresh and soft.

Hydrate:

Not all moisturizes are created equal. Scientifically speaking, it’s all about the molecules. The smaller the molecules, the more potent the moisturizer. Look for serums and oils to layer beneath a day cream containing longwearing humectants like hyaluronic acid.

I n t e r n a l i z e : Your skin is the body’s largest organ. By incorporating anti-inflammatory and anti-aging supplements, such as fish oil and collagen protein powder, you’re reversing the signs of aging from the inside out. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Liven up your H2O by infusing it with cucumbers, ginger and lemon to de-puff and detox. Don’t splurge on the sunshine:

While summer packs a calendar full of pool parties, BBQs and vacations, your skin doesn’t have to RSVP to the lackluster and dehydrated after effects of a robust social life. The connection between sun exposure and skin cancer is well-known, however an aversion to the texture of sunscreen remains. Swapping a cream for a powder or a mousse formula will keep the rays at bay without weighing the skin down. Try Eminence Sun Defense Mineral sunscreen or TIZO foam sunscreen, SPF 30.

Nocturnal Nourishment:

While we sleep, the entire body is renewing cells. Logging between seven to nine hours of quality rest will do wonders for a fatigued complexion. Ask any new mother how their skin looked during the first months of having a baby and they will confirm there is something to the old adage of beauty sleep.

PINGUECULA

and Pterygium

Tw o U n i n v i t e d G u e s t s i n Yo u r E y e s By Dr. Cynthia Payne

A common concern among patients here in our dry desert is the appearance of a yellowish bump on the white part of the eye or the white thing growing over the eye. These descriptions will usually refer to pinguecula or pterygium growing on the eyeball. Both result from UV exposure, dust, allergens, or dryness and are in response to an irritant. Pinguecula grows on the white part of the eye and is a thickened, yellowish bump. When the pinguecula is inflamed, it may swell and look larger than normal. The size and appearance of the pinguecula are also affected by the deposits of protein, lipid, or calcium left when the swelling goes down. When the eyes become irritated, the area of the pinguecula may also have a bloodshot appearance accompanied by pain. Pinguecula most commonly develop on the nasal side of the eye. They can be uncomfortable and further irritated by contact lens wear, but they do not affect vision. Pterygium is more noticeable because it extends up onto the cornea. It has the appearance of a white band growing across the colored part of the eye and becomes cosmetically undesirable. Pterygium may begin as a pinguecula and can become red and painful when irritated or inflamed. Pterygium is also known as “surfer’s eye.” If the pterygium grows too far into the center of the cornea it may block vision. The fleshy band of the pterygium can distort the shape of the cornea and cause increased astigmatism or blurred vision. Like pinguecula, it is more common on the nasal side. The best way to keep pinguecula from forming or growing is to wear UV protection outdoors and use artificial tears to lubricate and flush the eyes. A steroid drop may be necessary if they become red and painful to decrease the inflammation. Pinguecula rarely require surgery but pterygium may need surgery if it grows enough or distorts the cornea enough to affect vision. Some patients will request surgical removal to improve aesthetics, which can work well for these, but a small percentage of pinguecula may grow back.

This article is not intended to treat or diagnose any medical issues. If you are experiencing redness, pain, or any swelling or growth on the eye, please consult an eye care professional.

Learning to

R.E.A.D. W h a t t h e C l a s s r o o m o f L i f e Ta u g h t M e About the Board Room By Janice Tanaka

“Go to school, get an education, and then get a job you love.” Many of us grew up hearing that as the path to success but, while I would say today that I am successful, some of my most valuable lessons didn’t come from my schooling. After almost two decades in human resources and talent development, there are four key skills that I could have only learned in the classroom of life.

Life taught me how to R.E.A.D. Resilience.

The ability to get back up again, no matter how many times you’ve fallen.

I learned this one when I applied for a job I desperately wanted but didn’t get. And when I worked painstakingly on a project that fell flat. Even by miscommunicating something that caused a sticky misunderstanding. Over time I learned not to dwell on the failure, but to extract the lessons and then try again.

E m p a t h y . The ability to understand what it’s like in the other person’s shoes. Working in the hospitality industry in Hawaii taught me this one. Often visitors save for years for their dream vacation, so when it rains it can really put a damper on their trip. While I couldn’t control the weather, what I could do was make suggestions for them to enjoy Hawaii undercover, helping them to make the most of their time there. This kind of consideration is key in nurturing relationships, both business and personal.

A g i l i t y.

The ability to read and respond (not react) to situations quickly.

It is crucial to be able to quickly assess a situation and employ the initial steps to pull out of crisis mode. For example, when your laptop crashes minutes before a big presentation, knowing how to seek alternatives (borrow another laptop) and/or adjust materials (printed copies) will save the day. It will also spare you an emotional breakdown.

Drive.

The ability to be self-motivated and have a growth mindset.

Your drive is what moves you through overwhelm and apathy; it pushes you to be better, do better, and have richer experiences. I’m always seeking new ways to be a better leader for my team: getting a mentor, attending a conference, or simply being a better leader outside the workplace so I can be a better leader inside.

I remain a proponent of higher education. But we must admit… there are some things you just can’t learn in a classroom.

A to Z Pinot Gris

LIBATIONS |

When temperatures rise, one of the best ways to cool off is with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. This refreshing wine from New Zealand showcases zesty aromas of grapefruit and lime, followed by tropical fruits and fresh cut grass. Dave Phinney (who created the popular Prisoner wine), developed Locations based on a simple concept – make the best possible wine from a given country or location. NZ is the newest addition to the Locations collection, and fortunately, it has arrived just in time for summer. Enjoy with salads, sushi, antipasto, and fish tacos.

An intoxicating Italian rosé with bright flavors of strawberry and pink grapefruit. The name 11 MINUTES refers to the duration of the skin contact (the optimal length of time it takes to extract the noblest qualities of the grapes and obtain the pale rosy hue). The wine is delicious on its own, and extremely versatile with food. Pair with salads, light pasta dishes, seafood and mild cheeses.

Juggernaut Hillside Cabernet Sauvignon The definition of a juggernaut is a massive, powerful force that cannot be stopped. Did they name this wine after me? Well, maybe not, but this cab is definitely my style. Big and bold with rich flavors of dark berry fruit, vanilla and spice. Juggernaut Cab is the essential summer barbeque wine. Enjoy with steak, burgers, ribs, baked beans and roasted vegetables. Time to fire up the grill!

Kinky Aloha Liqueur Try the newest addition to the Kinky Liqueur lineup. This tempting fusion of tropical flavors and premium vodka is like a vacation in a bottle! Drink it on the rocks, or add it to your favorite mixer for a sizzling summer cocktail. Say “Aloha” to summer with Kinky Liqueur!

Sponsored by Lee’s Discount Liquor, with over 20 locations in Southern Nevada and one in Mesquite, you can find a huge variety of alcohol and mixers for any taste. For locations, hours and more information, visit leesliquorlv.com.

GROUCHY JOHN’S COFFEE COFFEE |

Grouchy John’s Coffee was founded in 2010 by two longtime Las Vegans who met as students at UNLV.

Grouchy John’s Coffee features locallysourced coffees, teas and pastries served in a comfortable and friendly atmosphere. One of their popular offerings is house-made Nitro cold brew coffee, and their menu also includes nerdy specialties named by customers after their favorite Star Wars characters, like the Yoda, the Lando, and the Jedi. While their mobile units serve at catered & special events throughout the Las Vegas valley, both Grouchy John’s Coffee shops are open daily from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.

What started as a tabletop espresso catering service soon grew into a mobile coffee operation that now includes a trailer, a truck, and two brick-and-mortar coffee shops. Their Maryland Parkway location also has a 24-hour drive-thru.

TIABI TIABI, an acronym for To Inspire and Be Inspired, is the company mantra of owners Tiffany Stiles and Mae Pineda’s coffee shop located in central Las Vegas. “We are a battle-born coffee shop that serves locally roasted coffees, handcrafted waffles and vegan specialties. The sky is the limit when you are passionate about what you do,” said Stiles. “When making changes in our store and talking to customers, we find ourselves asking, ‘Will it inspire others?’ Our waffles are our signature, 100% vegan recipe and our coffees are locally roasted from various roasters in the city.” Signature menu items such as Tiff’s Waffle Macchiato, a cinnamon vanilla latte topped with whipped cream and a churro waffle, and The West Coast, a waffle sandwich with chicken, bacon, avocado, tomato, cheese and TIABI sauce are among the most popular items served to locals, UNLV students and even tourists seeking local spots off the Las Vegas Strip. Stiles and Pineda opened TIABI’s doors in 2013 after meeting while studying at UNLV and are happy to have started a business near their old stomping grounds. TIABI is also a great place to study, hang out and make new friends of all ages.

tion of soups and salads, pasta offerings such as penne alla vodka, linguine with shrimp and mushrooms, fettuccine carbonara and more.

After owner Ozzie Montano shut down his first location, the desire to reopen remained a goal. “I started North Beach Café in 1993, during the heyday of who’s who in Las Vegas, I then closed the restaurant, but years later had the opportunity to open a place just a few blocks from my home,” said Montano.

Aside from the signature dishes, main courses include lobster ravioli, shrimp scampi over pappardelle, pizzas, ribeye steak and traditional Italian desserts. While they do not have a specific kids’ menu, they do offer smaller portions, along with other kid-friendly favorites.

On April 17, 2014, the new North Beach Italian Bistro opened adjacent to Bogey’s Bar and Grill in the Northwest part of Las Vegas. The menu remained the same, as North Beach is known for its signature dishes of cioppino, chicken marsala and osso buco, but Montano knows that it takes more than a solid menu to remain successful. “What makes us successful is that we offer good food, good service and have clean bathrooms,” says Montano matter of factly. Good service is an understatement, as Montano himself makes his way around the restaurant to ensure that every guest is happy with their experience. The dining room is filled with original artwork by Montano’s cousin Aldo Luongo, and an intriguing 500-gallon aquarium that speaks to the family-friendly atmosphere of the restaurant. The bar offers weekly specialty cocktails made from seasonal fruits, along with an abundant wine list featuring wines from various regions of the world. A unique factor to North Beach Italian Bistro is the attached Bogey’s Bar and Grill, which patrons can visit before or after dinner for a cocktail, to catch a game or enjoy some video gaming machines. The restaurant fulfills menu offerings at the bar. “That gives our bar patrons more options than your average bar food. They can order fresh salads, chicken Parmesan, lasagna, and more,” said Bogey’s manager, John Vece. North Beach Italian Bistro also offers a beautiful outdoor event space for private parties of all kinds with an extensive catering menu. Named the Best Italian Food off the Strip, North Beach Bistro is worth the visit. As Montano says, and is evident when you walk in the door, “We think with our hearts, not with our pockets.”

RESTAURANTS |

The moment you enter this ambient, homey eatery at Lola’s, offering two locations in Summerlin or Downtown, you are transported to a French Quarter pub in the deep South. This New Orleans-style, charming restaurant, decorated with traditional Mardi Gras colors, serves award-winning authentic Cajun and Creole dishes. Louisiana aroma and influences, such as the fleur-de-lis artwork, Saints’ fan memorabilia and upbeat jazzy tunes, complement the Southern foodie experience. Chef Lola Elizabeth (Beth) Pokorny, New Orleans native, and raised in a family of restauranteurs, decided to share her own soulful cooking in Las Vegas in the early 90s. Pokorny followed her passion and began the Cajun Connection, where she was the personal chef and caterer for 15 years, prior to opening her first Lola’s Downtown on Charleston, near The Smith Center. Lola’s renown homemade specialty menu items include bronzed shrimp and grits, charbroiled oysters, crab cakes, shrimp Creole, jambalaya, Cajun red beans and rice with andouille sausage, and the highly anticipated seasonal fresh from the sea: crawfish (available February through mid-summer). Other masterful favorites feature shrimp seasoned or pan-bronzed, catfish, complemented with melt-in-your mouth Gouda grits. Pokorny’s infamous po’boys, fried oyster and catfish or blackened chicken, catfish and shrimp; and the roast beef “D’Brees” debris are cooked on flamed-grilled French bread. Of course, you can’t forget to tantalize your taste buds with the classic Louisiana cocktails, such as the hurricane, hand grenade and the gold rush (all featured on the happy hour menu as well). As an encore, guests are encouraged to savor Beth’s own secret recipe, the sinfully delicious, bananas foster bread pudding.

Continuing to offer fresh ingredients and farm-to-table menu items, Lola grows her own garden of vegetables, fruits and herbs all on site. At the Summerlin location, savory herbs such as parsley, stevia, thyme, oregano, chives, sage and rosemary all elevate the flavors of the homemade dishes. The appetizing garden beet salad with goat cheese and blackberry balsamic reduction is also created with nutritious tomatoes, kale, Swiss chard, lettuce and beets. Plump and ripened fruits: including peaches, plums, apricots, lemons and grapefruit give added zest to specialty dishes and hints of mint, strawberries, jalapeño, cucumbers and basil are used in seasonal drinks. Lola’s sautéed vegetables and gumbo are filled with vitamin-rich zucchini, squash and peppers. The featured dessert, fig delight, uses natural, locally grown items on the restaurant farm.

LOLA’S

“I wanted to create an inviting place, with a New Orleans ambience, where guests would enjoy Southern cooking,” Pokorny said. “The essence of my meals is to use fresh ingredients. I am pleased to have a thriving garden at my restaurant filled with vegetables, fruits and herbs to add seasoning to my new and classic menu items. If you have to water it; you should be able to eat it.” Lola’s Summerlin also boasts a sprawling outdoor garden-like patio, bar and a large private dining area. Guests may relish in the live music offered each Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. As they say in New Orleans, “Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez.” (Let the good times roll.) Survey says... The recent rise in social media usage and the pressure to be perfect is causing our society to suffer when it comes to loving ourselves. The Florida House Experience recently surveyed 1,000 men and women on a variety of personal topics from body positivity to confidence, mainstream media to selfies. The results aren’t kind. Over 47% of women feel less confident about their bodies as they age. Understandably, things may not always be where

they once were and a few more wrinkles may have seemingly come out of nowhere. For women, social media is the top factor for influencing how they feel about their bodies, television and movies. The perceptions of other people are the next-most important: first, their significant other; second, their family member; and lastly, themselves. 3 Ways to Stop Allowing

FEAR

to dictate your life choices By Galit Ventura-Rozen

FEAR, if you really think about it, is just a 4-letter word people often let control their life choices. Ok, maybe it’s a bit more. An emotion, a bodily reaction, a taught response? But don’t you have a choice? A choice whether to allow fear to make decisions for you instead of making them yourself? With a bit of guidance, you can let go of the fear and live your life confidently. 1. GET COMFORTABLE WITH THE UNKNOWN: Fear often stems from not knowing and worrying yourself with the “what if’s.” What if you made a choice today to embrace the unknown and instead of looking at it with fear, you chose to look at it with excitement? Remember when you were little and didn’t have every single minute of every day planned? Wasn’t almost everything unknown? Remember that excitement it would create inside you? 2. ACCEPT FAILURE AS PART OF THE PROCESS: One of the most common fears is fear of failure. Imagine accepting that failure may occur and in place of that fear, you embrace it. Recognizing failure will help you learn what works and does not work in your life or business. How many prominent figures have failed repeatedly before they succeeded? Most will not get it right the first time. Change your perspective; think of failure as the trial process to success. 3. FOCUS ON THE RESULT: When fear shows up, focus on the end result of what you want to accomplish. See yourself past the obstacles, what if’s, and fear. Allow yourself to feel the success of accomplishment and to think of what it would mean to you and your life if you pushed past that fear. Visualization is a powerful thing. Many cannot visualize the end result, which is often a reason they do not achieve success. Imagine your success, what would it look like, feel like, what would it add to your life? When fear shows up, remind yourself of that vision. Fear may never be absent permanently, but you can choose to give it zero power over your decisions. Allow yourself to make decisions based on logic and what you want for your life. www.Galitventurarozen.com | www.Empoweringuniversity.com

UMBILICAL STEM CELL THERAPY EQUALS R E G E N E R AT I V E M E D I C I N E By Michael S. Mall Michael S. Mall, M.D., medical director of Michael S. Mall, MD | Medical Concierge and New Image Advanced Laser Skin Center, now offers the cuttingedge treatment of umbilical stem cell therapy. Umbilical cord-derived stem cells have been validated to be the most potent type of stem in terms of regenerating human cells and reversing disease states in over 100 different conditions including lupus, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, traumatic brain injuries, neuropathies, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, dementia and stroke injury. It is important to state that these stem cells do not come from any embryonic tissue from unborn fetuses, but instead come from umbilical cords of live births that would otherwise be discarded and must pass the FDA tissue bank screening process in order to be utilized. Although the umbilical cord stem cell product is FDA approved, they are not specifically FDA approved for any specific treatment indication.

The umbilical cord stem cells are essential zero days old, as they have not aged with the patient, as would be with a fat derived or bone marrow derived cell from the patient’s body. Doctors can administer these new stem cells, which are essentially zero days old, to patients who have conditions being studied with umbilical cord cells but cannot make claims of treating that condition to be FDA compliant. How do they work? Approximately 20 million live umbilical cord stem cells are introduced into the body through an IV and double every 28 hours, up to 65 hours. They are drawn to areas of damage, injury, inflammation and degeneration by signals given off from damaged and inflamed tissues. The stem cells set up immunomodulary centers where there is damaged tissue and recruit new cells to repair damage, as well as produce anti-inflammatory and healing peptides and proteins to help in the regeneration of tissue. These umbilical cord cells also regenerate cartilage, bone, connective tissue, muscle, organ tissue and skin. The full effects of regenerating damaged and inflamed tissues can take up to six months to accomplish.

Safety in the

CITY The Ins and Outs of Urban Dog Etiquette By Cathy Brooks

Our marvelous city has a challenge that many others don’t. The original planning wasn’t urban. With influence from ranching and post-industrial design, the City of Las Vegas didn’t start with a densely populated, urban walkable core and expand into concentric rings of suburbia as so many other major U.S. cities did. It happened in reverse. Over the last 10 years, monumental growth across our valley has begun reversing the tides, and now we find ourselves experiencing life in a way that is increasingly more akin to a “typical” city.

Cathy Brooks is owner of The Hydrant Club, a facility specializing in teaching urban dog etiquette in downtown Las Vegas. She also operates a virtual community helping owners improve their handling skills.

This is an excellent thing. It is, however, also the catalyst for some genuine issues—specifically for dogs and their owners. Suburban and rural dogs are notoriously poorly socialized. They live in homes on fenced properties. They may or may not ever go for walks around their neighborhood, instead spending time in their yards or being loaded into the car for hikes or trips to far away parks. They don’t encounter other dogs or any kinds of stimuli you see in a typical urban environment: skateboards, wheelchairs, bicycles, not to mention sirens, lots of traffic and thick crowds of people. Under-socialized dogs and humans without urban dog handling experience do not cozy bedfellows make. In fact, gone to the extreme, a poorly socialized dog or a well-intentioned human without an understanding of urban dog etiquette can be a recipe for disaster. As our wonderful valley becomes more urbanized, there are things we need to know as responsible dog owners not only to keep our dogs happy and healthy, but also to keep them safe.

Here are a few tips to get you started:

1

2

3

Think like a dog: It’s important to understand how dogs process information and experience the world if you want to communicate with them well.

Keep your eye on the dog: It’s tempting to walk down the street chatting or on your mobile device. Not when walking with your dog. Focus. Be aware of your surroundings.

Get grounded: In addition to being aware, be present.

What happened in

YOUR PAST

could stay in your body? By Dr. Tiger Devore

If you caught wind of a recent story about some women’s brains containing traces of male DNA, you may be left wondering if your past is still a part of your present. A falsely reported “new story” insinuated that the DNA of women’s past sexual partners has remained within the woman’s body, thus altering her DNA forever. Pretty science fiction-y, huh? Biology is fascinating because of the complex information that most of us simply don’t understand. How is it that we can examine our bodies and find the DNA of someone else stored within? The scientific term is microchimerism: Where we distinctly carry the DNA of someone else in our own body. But how do those islands of cells get there? One form of research looks at many different studies and comes up with a possibility that women may take on the DNA of their past sexual partners. The article invites you to look at how sperm are designed to burrow into the membrane of the woman and could end up anywhere in the body, creating these islands of cells that are distinct from the woman herself. Imagine that your sexual history is actually stored in your brain. That is where belief on this topic divides and takes a strange turn. This research studied the autopsy reports of several women and did find some of this microchimerism. There are several known causes for these cells showing up in the women. This may happen with women who were once pregnant, and never knew it, as more than half of all pregnancies end spontaneously before the woman even knows she is pregnant. It can also happen if the woman’s mother had a pregnancy with a male prior to the pregnancy that resulted in the female, since there may be cells that survived from the previous pregnancy. There may also have been a male twin that didn’t survive and was absorbed before the woman was born. Even the conservative scientists will admit that there is a possibility that the male cells could come from male partners, but then point out that since that hasn’t been studied, we can’t claim it as true. That’s what science always says about this kind of radical thinking, until it becomes science fact.

TEAM PAV I N G LAS VEGAS’ COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE LANDSCAPE

By Ann-Marie Auger Andrews & Annie Sliman n an industry that is primarily male-dominated, Soozi Jones Walker, CCIM, SIOR and Bobbi Miracle, CCIM, SIOR are the mother-daughter team at Commercial Executives Real Estate Services making strides to prove that Las Vegas commercial real estate is not just a landscape for men to conquer. Soozi was born in Chicago and at the age of 10, her family moved to Huntington Beach, where she was eventually part of the first graduating class from Edison High School. It was in Southern California where she discovered her passion for commercial real estate because of the widespread presence of commercial buildings. In 1978, Soozi relocated to Las Vegas and obtained her Nevada real estate license from the Nevada School of Real Estate and went on to launch her real estate career at Jack Matthew’s and Co. Las Vegas is where her daughter, Bobbi Miracle, was born and raised. Bobbi is a graduate of Bonanza High School and an alumna of the University of Nevada, Reno where she received her Bachelor of Science in business administration with an emphasis in marketing. Since moving to Las Vegas, Soozi’s first and only job has been in real estate. At the time, the market consisted of general real estate, mostly land and residential, and most commercial space was connected to the hotel industry. For Soozi, she knew that commercial real estate was the direction she wanted her career to head and that is what she pursued fully. “Every day is different in commercial real estate,” said Soozi. “Every transaction is different, you get to deal with different types of businesses and clients, and for us that’s exciting.” After completing her undergraduate degree and obtaining her Nevada real estate license from the Nevada School of Real Estate, Bobbi ended up joining Soozi in commercial real estate in 2001 and today both women lead Commercial Executives Real Estate Services.

55

Bobbi shared that she was raised with a strong work ethic from watching her mother climb the corporate ladder. Motivated by her mother’s drive, Bobbi held a job from the time she was just 15 years old. For Bobbi, commercial real estate became the ideal career path allowing flexibility within her life.

I WATCHED MY MOM

FOR HER SUCCESS

“I like having the ability to set my own hours,” said Bobbi. “In doing so, it allows me to be involved in business transactions while balancing the task of raising a family of my own. A family business also allows for younger generations, like my children, to have the opportunity to see what hard work looks like. This encourages a strong work ethic, and I want Abigail, 11, and Tyler, 8, to have the same experiences that I did growing up. I watched my mom work hard for her success and it instilled the same drive in me.” Soozi and Bobbi do not often discuss that they are related when working with new clients, although people often catch on rather quickly, given the obvious resemblance. However, their clients know that regardless, their relationship is not paramount in the transaction; meeting the client’s goals come first. Their ability to successfully collaborate as both mother and daughter and as a team is what ultimately drives them as they work to meet their clients’ needs by assisting them in their new location where they may thrive. Both women have received their designations in the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors (SIOR) and Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) from the CCIM Institute. In addition, Soozi and Bobbi are both very involved with CCIM on local and national levels. Both women attribute a great amount of their success to their respectful designations. It is those networks and qualifications that set them apart from other brokers in the market. The Las Vegas Valley has become a hotbed for commercial real estate investments, along with commercial real estate firms to manage those properties. What Soozi and Bobbi have found to give them an edge in the business is their connection with their clients on a personal level. “We work with institutional buyers, local owners and tenants who allow us to deal with their family wealth and trusts, which requires an added level of trust,” said Bobbi. “When dealing with clients who are involved in family businesses, you must be willing to put in the extra effort to build relationships, take the time to understand them and get to know their business. At the end of the day, it is all about providing service with a personal touch that builds trust, and we know our clients appreciate that extra step.” Ed Nigro, Chairman of the Board for Bank of George and his son, Todd Nigro, President of Nigro Development, can attest to the extra mile that both women are willing to go, to do what is best for their clients. “We have worked with Soozi and Bobbi for over 20 years. The reason is integrity, professionalism, timely performance and results. You cannot beat that combination.” Soozi and Bobbi both agree that in the commercial real estate business, you must be willing to help everyone. “We are here to solve problems, and we enjoy helping people do so,” said Soozi. Commercial real estate is based on problem solving, if our clients didn’t have space issues, they would not need a broker.”

AT THE END OF THE DAY IT IS ALL ABOUT PROVIDING A

Both women shared that their reasons for becoming real estate brokers are the challenge and responsibility required— and these women can do it all. Their extensive schooling, qualifications, designations and awards are proof of how they have evolved their careers over the years and how they continue to run a successful business. They both love the industry and will tell you that a pertinent part of the job is having a good sense of numbers. Investment returns are central to the ownership decision and understanding and communicating this is a huge part of the success of a commercial real estate brokerage. While Commercial Executive Real Estate Services has several commercial real estate projects in full swing, one property has them particularly excited. When asked about some of the current properties they have available in the market, both women are eager to talk more about their longtime client Tom Fallon, whose family trust owns properties in Las Vegas, and is the owner of the Pace Plaza, a retail and office park located on W. Sunset and Buffalo. “For us, it is very exciting to be fully enveloped in a project like Pace Plaza,” said Bobbi. “It is a thrill to see a project from its inception and go along for the ride from the ground up.

We are just as invested in every detail as the client is, and it means a lot to us to be included and have the client request and value our input.” Since being a part of the project from the get go, it helps the mother-daughter duo by giving them an extra edge when presenting to prospective tenants. The first phase of Pace Plaza has been completed and is fully leased. The second phase has broken ground and is currently underway. It is safe to say that Soozi has had a multifaceted approach to her commercial real estate practice, as she is also known for her time spent as an international instructor with the CCIM Institute. Soozi shared that becoming an instructor was a remarkable experience and was honored to go through the process, which began with 400 applicants who auditioned and eventually dwindled down to just 11. Soozi is the only CCIM instructor from Nevada. “Being a CCIM instructor has allowed me to become better at what I do,” said Soozi. “As an instructor, I teach not only the theory, but also from the prospective of what I do for a living and how to use the knowledge to make money. My students challenge me to be the best I can be at all times.”

She also explained that the most important aspect of CCIM instruction is to impart competence and confidence in the students before they leave the classroom. “Our live classes are four days long and attended by a variety of students, including MBAs, individuals already successful in their careers or looking for a second career, and professionals looking to better understand the evaluation of a variety of commercial investment opportunities and vehicles,” said Soozi. Soozi was also awarded the CCIM CI Intro Instructor of the Year in 2012 and 2013 and was also honored with a CCIM Foundation Endowed Scholarship in her name: Soozi Jones Walker, CCIM. Bobbi obtained her CCIM in 2005 and, along with Soozi, is part of the first mother-daughter team to both have the designation. They hold that same honor with SIOR. Both Soozi and Bobbi have extensive resumes that display a long history of business success in commercial real estate. From education to certifications to organizational involvement and an extensive list of award recognitions, both women have earned their place as experts in Las Vegas commercial real estate. It is admirable that Soozi paved the way and Bobbi followed suit, and they chose to work not only as a motherdaughter team, but as partners.

I AM VERY FORTUNATE TO GET TO WORK WITH MY

EVERYDAY.

Locally, both are closely involved in real estate organizational networks including the Southern Nevada SIOR Chapter, Nevada Association of Realtors, the Southern Nevada CCIM Chapter, the Greater Las Vegas Association of Realtors, Commercial Alliance of Las Vegas, and the Frontier Girls of America (Girl Scouts). “Early on, Bobbi was viewed as a newcomer to this industry and is now perceived as an expert, which speaks volumes about her ability, drive and determination.” said Soozi. Soozi attributes her success in commercial real estate to two mentors, “I credit Steve Silverstein as a mentor. He taught me how to sell when I was still living in Southern California, and that experience had steered me to become a real estate broker. I also credit Woody Rossum. He recognized my abilities and encouraged me to take my sales skills and work ethic and expand them into real estate.” Bobbi attributes her career success to three mentors, “I would have to say Steve Silverstein. He is someone who has been in our corner for many years. I sat across from him at a blackjack table in Reno when he asked me what my plans were after I graduated. Once I told him my idea, he rerouted me and said that I was going to move back to Las Vegas and work with my mom. And that is eventually what I did.” In addition, Bobbi shared that she also attributes a great amount of success to her parents. She owes her desire to succeed to both her mom and dad who taught her to go after what she wanted. “My dad taught me not to take everything so seriously and to just enjoy life and enjoy my successes. My mom always encouraged me to push forward and to go after what I wanted. Even though we are polar opposites, we balance each other out and work well together to get the job done.” For some, working with family may not be the ideal situation, let alone your own mother, but for Soozi and Bobbi, they would not have it any other way. “Working with family can be difficult but the plus side is that you can trust them 100%,” said Bobbi. “Family does tend to take things more personally, but an important thing to remember and consider is that they will always have your back.”

A FAMILY BUSINESS ALSO ALLOWS

TO SEE WHAT HARD WORK LOOKS LIKE.

Both women can agree that a downside to their working relationship is that during holidays and family gettogethers, the conversation can gravitate towards work-related topics. Both Soozi and Bobbi, however, try hard to stay away from work-related conversations and muddling those topics with family time outside of the office, as they both realize the importance of separating work from their home life. “I am very fortunate to get to work with my daughter each day,” said Soozi. “I could not be prouder of her growth and success, and I am glad that I get to see her more today than I did when she was growing up. I am thankful to have the opportunity to be a part of her life in more ways than one; both professionally and personally. For me that is very special. We are more than just a mother and daughter. We have the unique opportunity to also have a working friendship, which is quite rare.” As a takeaway, Soozi shared that she has worked in the male-dominated commercial real estate industry for over 40 years. While not everyone thought she would succeed, she did, and her vast career experiences have made her even better at what she does. Her desire for success is what ultimately drove her to be the best she can be. “Las Vegas is a unique town. If you are truly good in your chosen field, then you will be respected for who you are as well as what you do, gender does not enter the picture,” said Soozi. “If you put in the time and effort and take care of your clients, then you will see success and respect.” Bobbi, who is much like Soozi in relation to her drive and work ethic, wants readers to know that success requires hard work; that nothing comes easy and effort really is key when it comes to being a successful business woman. “When I was growing up, I was taught that you have got to get up each day, put your big-girl pants on, and go to work and get things done. What this taught me is that as long as you put in the effort, you will reap the rewards because hard work always pays off.” Commercial Executives Real Estate Services is a boutique commercial real estate brokerage firm that is dedicated to providing exceptional service and market knowledge in Southern Nevada. The team consists of individuals with expansive knowledge and experience in commercial real estate in order to better serve both new and old clientele. They specialize in Acquisition and Disposition of Commercial Properties, Leasing and Tenant Representation. Their focus is on office, medical office, retail, industrial products and land. WOMEN’S HEALTH FAQs By Dr. Michael S. Mall

Michael S. Mall, M.D. is the medical director of Michael S. Mall, MD | Medical Concierge and New Image Advanced Laser Skin Center. Dr. Mall answers some common questions about health, but encourages those with concerns to seek professional help. Q: When should a woman get her hormone levels checked? A: For many women, their hormone levels begin declining in their mid-30s. The symptoms can be subtle, such as fatigued more easily than before, difficulty maintaining muscle mass and strength, gaining excess body fat, decreased libido, anxiety, decreased ability for a restful sleep, and vaginal dryness. Getting the appropriate lab test done with an even more appropriate interpretation of what they really mean can be a challenge. It is best to have them ordered by a physician who deals in bioidentical hormone replacement daily, otherwise the physician just looks at whether or not your results fall within the reference range as opposed to where they should be. Q: What can I do about a low libido? A: Low libido can be the result of many things. Assuming a supportive, loving partner and minimal stress, hormone levels should be checked as answered above. Laser vaginal rejuvenation improves the biological age and function of the vagina, increasing elasticity, tightness and lubrication. That itself may improve libido, as there is positive feedback from improved sexual function and pleasure, especially if intercourse was painful prior to vaginal rejuvenation. The O shot improves the ability to orgasm as well as the quality of the orgasm. So, although not designed to treat low libido directly, the O shot can increase libido with the positive feedback of more easily achieving an orgasm with sexual activity. Although both the O shot and vaginal rejuvenation certainly improve sexual function, neither balances or treats hormone levels. Hormone replacement therapy, including testosterone, can improve vaginal dryness, low energy levels and low libido. Vaginal rejuvenation improves sexual function and pleasure, which certainly compliments hormone replacement therapy, but either one alone can certainly help.

Creating your

LEGACY

62

Summer 2018 â—¦ womanmagazine.vegas

T h e S t o r y O n l y Yo u C a n W r i t e By Tonya Twitchell

In the past two issues of Las Vegas Woman magazine, I have invited you to consider the stories you tell—and have told—about who you are and about who you can be. I have encouraged you to consider where each story came from and to evaluate the degree to which each story serves and champions you in and across your life. I have also invited you to notice and pay attention to the armor and masks you may, at times, be wearing. To consider whether these masks are useful and appropriate and begin to set aside the armor and thinking that no longer serve you in your life. Today, I invite you to fast forward to the day of your inevitable passing and think about the legacy that you want to create. What are the specific words that you want the people in your life to use to describe who you are and how you lived? Why are these words important and how does the absence of these words either affirm or diminish your overall satisfaction with your life? Imagine that today is the day of your passing. Imagine that your legacy is the one you have been creating thus far. How do you feel about this legacy? Is it one of design or default? As you think about the differences between the two, what are the things that you must do to design differently? What limiting beliefs, stories, and habits are slowing you down and standing in your way? What are the actions and activities that you can begin to do in a more focused and intentional fashion? Begin to view your life through the lens of your intended legacy. Decide that you can and will design your legacy and that you will no longer settle for a legacy of default. Champion yourself and your heart’s truest desires. Be willing to be honest and brave with yourself about where and when you are currently on target, and where and why you may be falling short. Give yourself the same grace, compassion, and forgiveness that you would give to your children or best friend. Allow yourself to set aside judgements, beat-ups and blame. Set down the masks or armor that are heavy and no longer relevant. Allow yourself to connect with the power and clarity of your legacy and life’s purpose. Surround yourself with people who will stand with you and, when all else fails, be willing to simply get up, dust yourself off, and start again.

Destination

EVERYWHERE By Rick Nelson

There are few things better for the soul than a nice, long leisurely drive through the desert with your destination being both everywhere and nowhere in particular at the same time. No other car is up to that task like the 2019 Jaguar F-Type Convertible. Starting at $64,845 for the four-cylinder version, its clean lines and 18-inch wheels are easy on the eyes, as the Active Sport Exhaust is easy on the ears. Enveloping yourself in the standard leather and suede combination seats, the only competition for the scent of the sagebrush is the passing blur of the surrounding plants and tan earth tones. But if you do have a destination, why not a drive to the Pahrump Valley Winery for the day, maybe a trek to the Valley of Fire or a quick trip to Mesquite for a spa and golf day? Yes, the trunk can fit two golf bags. In Southern Nevada, your options are endless ‌ just like summer. All-in

MOTHERHOOD Finding Balance and Acceptance By Jennifer Battisti On Tuesdays I go to a hot Pilates class. “This is your hour,” the instructor shouts through her head mic. My phone flashes with a cascade of notifications while engaging my core in a forearm plank. I am caring for my health, this is my hour. My body is at the gym, but my heart is tucked in my daughter’s backpack; still trying to manage the self-imposed inadequacy I feel because I was too anxious and impatient to connect with her before school. Later, I will buy her a sugarlaced treat in an attempt to unravel the knot of guilt I have been carrying around all day. At bedtime, I will remember I forgot to buy dog food while reading “Green Eggs and Ham.” My daughter will intuitively suspect I am distracted and become demanding for my attention. I will lay down that evening worried that I am failing her. If this sounds at all familiar, you’re not alone. We’ve all heard of empty-nest syndrome, which arrives post-adolescence when we are faced with the sudden and stark reality of unmarked calendars and quiet mornings. But there is another brand of barren nest; the one we neglect by splitting ourselves between the myriad of roles we are consistently juggling as mothers and women. This nest holds our authentic selves; the one who loves to garden, rock climb, sing karaoke and swim. We strive to live up to societal expectations to achieve personal success while also being stellar mommies and partners. The result is an abandonment of the very piece of our beings that provides the fuel to show up for our lives with wisdom and empathy. This is evident when I am irritable, critical or forgetful. It is in the art of “being” that “doing” begins to fall away. We are models for our children on how to engage with the world. By being “all in” for the moments of our lives, they learn stillness and we begin to feel the playfulness of life. It doesn’t hurt to set some boundaries. Try meditating for 10 minutes a day or turning off your notifications over the weekend. Commit to taking on only one activity at a time and saying no when you’re already over-scheduled—the circus is overrated. The result is the forgotten nest begins to fill with an abundance of love and wonder.

Jennifer Battisti is a local writer, poet and mother. She serves as the administrator and a participating Teaching Artist for the Alzheimer’s Poetry Project in Clark County.

TO INDIA with love... My Head Shave and Letting it All Go

By Jodi Friedman

“I learned the truth at 17 That love was meant for beauty queens And high school girls with clear skinned smiles Who married young and then retired” Excerpt of “At 17” by Janis Ian, 1975 We come into this world inspired with the divine … precious, bold, and innocent; full of hope and wonderment … we feel the world we are in through the need to love and to be loved. In the beginning we are filled with such abundant light. Our breath automatically guides and sustains us through our entire earthly mission. It oxygenates every single cell in our bodies and does what is necessary for us to thrive magnificently and stay alive. As a young woman, I defined myself with my perception of femininity. My hair, my clothing, my Barbie dolls, my girlfriends, and eventually my makeup all helped to create my outer appearance of who I thought I “should be.” I learned early on not only to create my success through my appearance; I also learned how sometimes my external appearance could crush my soul under the weight of others’ disapproval. In ninth grade, my face was partially paralyzed with a condition called Bell’s Palsy. I was teased and tormented by others who thought my condition made me ugly. It was after this emotionally painful time that I based many of my life decisions on the need for others’ approval. Being loved by others was so important to me that I became trapped in a place of low self-esteem. In March, something powerful led me to the nine-day Divine Mother Navaratri Festival in the Harekhan Ashram in India. This is the path that led me to Babaji’s Ashram and my divinely inspirational head shave or “Mundun.” With all the emphasis on the outer being, it keeps the real work of inner beauty hidden. Even though I felt tremendous pain in letting my hair go as “an act of service” to myself and the world, I decided to let go of what felt so very precious to me over my entire life. The head shave was held in an auspicious ceremony in the Ganges River in the Himalayas to release what I thought made me beautiful. When I decided to lose the attachment to my hair, everything that I needed was truly inside of me; that place where beauty lives and breathes.

What other people think of me is none of my business.

- Ru Paul

BUSTING DOWN mental block woes By Meghan Bailey Raise your hand if you have put off a decision, paper or project until the very last minute, hoping that what you decide, write, or complete doesn’t make people think less of you. You continually lie to yourself that your first intuition or idea isn’t good enough, and people may think less of you. You may think this is a little thing called procrastination. In reality, you’re experiencing a mental block and an emotional hang up. Mental blocks feel like blinders on your psyche and they are especially frustrating when you are trying to come up with a fresh approach or a genius-level idea. “When I have eliminated the ways that will not work, I will find the way that will work,” said Thomas Edison while discussing his failures when inventing the light bulb. Edison was focused on one thing: creating light. Edison was mindful of everyone rooting against him, but his focus on himself and what he wanted to achieve allowed for him to succeed. Imagine a world where he would have let other’s opinions of his failures affect him. No matter the path you are taking in life, mindfulness can help you clear away mental blocks. SOLICIT IDEAS AND SPEAK TO PEOPLE THAT ARE NOT IN YOUR TRADITIONAL CIRCLE Imagine in your mind a barrel. Once you have that image in your mind, ask three different people to think of a barrel. Once they have done so, ask them to explain what they saw. Some will tell you an enormous fish barrel; another may say to you a small cylinder that gas is pumped out of and some may just mean a circular holder. The point is, people from different walks of life have different perceptions. When you get the opportunity to see someone else’s point of view, it may not be groundbreaking, but it will allow you to benefit from widening your circle of influence to look at what you are doing in new ways to find the right direction for you. REMEMBER THERE IS MORE THAN ONE OUTCOME Human nature has all of us jumping to the worst case scenario. Whether you are submitting a final, applying for a new job or presenting a new idea, excessively worrying about what could happen hinders your reaction to taking action. Think back on some outcomes you’ve experienced. You’ll see they won’t be as bad as you made them out to be. RETHINK THE WORD “MISTAKE” When you make a decision that doesn’t pay off the way you thought, the first inclination is to blame yourself for a stupid mistake. What if you took the overwhelming fear of failing and making mistakes and flipped the script? Looking at a mistake as a decision that didn’t pay off because timing or pieces were not in the right place instead of feeling that you made a personal failure. A mental block is nothing more than when you hit a psychological wall and can’t move forward and you lose the motivation to continue. Becoming fixated on every small thing of your own doing paralyzes you. People do not want you to fail. Taking steps to become more mindful of your surroundings and opening your routine to learn from others is key to clearing mental blocks and becoming the person you are meant to be.

HAVANA Nights N e w V i s t a ’s A n n u a l G a l a Tu r n s U p t h e H e a t By Eve Dawes, photos courtesy of AEIOU Visuals New Vista’s 2018 gala, Havana Nights, officially launched the Las Vegas-based organization’s Youth Initiative, a campaign to actively address the alarming challenges plaguing Nevada’s children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) in the foster care system. The Cuban-themed extravaganza honored and celebrated Jim Blasco, stalwart of the Southern Nevada community, champion of Nevada’s IDD community, philanthropist, and medical cannabis industry leader. New Vista is a non-profit provider of Supported Living Arrangements and other programs for children and adults with IDD that promote independence, confidence and self-advocacy, giving members opportunities to live life to the fullest. The Youth Initiative brings to the forefront the staggering statistics and the monumental issues local children with IDD in foster care experience, which is an estimated 897 local children. New Vista has a long history of responding to the greatest needs of the most vulnerable members of the Las Vegas community, with over 30 years of service and advocacy of the IDD population. The gala raised awareness and funding for this new foster care program with 100% of the proceeds benefitting the campaign. The evening, emceed by John Di Domenico, was a whirlwind of excitement, which included endless Taittinger Champagne,

silent auction items, jewelry designed by New Vista’s members, along with members performing to a 12-piece Latin orchestra. Archie McArthur, Executive Director of New Vista, delivered a speech conveying the organization’s true heartfelt mission. “Much has changed since the inception of The New Vista Ranch. Even as the world and New Vista’s place in it has changed, the qualities that inspired our founding more than 31 years ago have not: love and compassion, innovation, commitment and genuine empathy for all of humanity. As we did then, so must we act boldly now, challenged with a new generation of members needing support that offers sustainability to our legacy, and New Vista in turn, is afforded the opportunity to transform the lives of many more families.” The launch of the Youth Initiative at Havana Nights served as an opportunity for attendees to pledge their financial support and answer the call on behalf of Nevada’s children. This monumental effort requires the attention of the Las Vegas community, in support of the most vulnerable among us. Tools to help your team

COLLABORATE Communicate and Get It Done

Summer 2018 â—¦ womanmagazine.vegas

With remote work growing in popularity and virtual offices becoming more commonplace, maximizing collaborative time among teams and creating efficiencies in organizations, especially among different physical locations and even time zones, is paramount. If your business is embracing remote work, how can you ensure your team has the resources to be the most productive?

Project management tools Project management tools have undergone a major revolution in the last few years, moving beyond spreadsheets and calendars to include file storage, commenting, instant messaging, screen sharing, and more in a single platform. Slack has been regarded as the market leader in these types of tools, with mobile and desktop versions, video calling, and integrations with Dropbox and Google Docs. Trello, Flock, Teamweek, and Basecamp have recently become mainstays in the project management sphere. You can also utilize some of the tools with Dropbox and Google Docs that you may already have at your disposal.

Find a good conferencing system Long gone are the days of dialing in a third, fourth, fifth party to a call. If your team relies on remote work, having a good conferencing system that enables screen sharing, comment features, muting (for the inevitable person who calls from the road with their windows down) and the ability to host webinars and other interactive sessions is important. Consider platforms like GoToMeeting, WebEx, or ReadyTalk for these.

Encourage creating together Teams that create documents, code, or design need specialized tools to meaningfully collaborate, edit, and offer feedback. For coders, a system like CodingTeam encourages collective code building among teams. And while G Suite from Google is an incredible resource and familiar to most people, software like InVision and Quip, which are more specific to designers and your creative teams, are also gaining popularity.

Consider a company intranet or Wiki A central repository for company data and policies (like employment handbooks, vacation time requests and timesheets) is important if most of your workforce is remote. It can be a useful place to store documents, link to project management tools and store a company Wiki, a peer-submitted library of content, ideas, and information.

Start small Asking your team what would help them be more successful and examining the efficiency of the tools you already use is an easy place to start. Google, Microsoft Office and Dropbox all have collaborative tools within their platforms, including new and updated features you may not yet be using. Overloading your team with new tools, not taking the time for proper and regular training, and tools that don’t address needs may be more detrimental to the collaborative process. To achieve success, it is imperative to start small, conduct a needs analysis and be mindful of your team’s ideas to be more productive.

ESCAPE

to Sedona, AZ

By Dr. Cynthia Payne

Less than 300 miles from Las Vegas is the picturesque escape of Sedona, Arizona. Famous for its beautiful red rock formations, film festivals, New Age shops and mystical vortex locations, this town has a population of only 10,000, but plays host to over 6 million tourists every year. The Sedona Canyon is best known for its breathtaking views of rock formations such as Cathedral Rock, Elephant Rock, Bell Rock, Courthouse Butte, Snoopy Rock, Airport Mesa, and Coffee Pot Rock. Known as a “geological wonderland,” the red color comes from the heavy composition of hematite (iron oxide or rust) in the largest visible layers of the formations.

The area was originally settled by the Sinagua culture. This was a cliff-dwelling civilization that lived in Sedona and the Verde Valley from about 500 to 1450 AD. The Palatki Ruins are a preserved World Heritage Site located in the Coconino National Forest surrounding Sedona. Visitors are limited, and tours are recommended. Pink Jeep Tours is the original tour company and maintains trails to the site. To view the Verde Valley, the Verde Canyon Railroad offers a four-hour trip through the canyon and rock tunnel showcasing the rock architecture, history, wildlife, and old mining company. On our trip, we saw a Sinagua dwelling in the cliffs, a bald eagle and a black bear. Sedona offers many outdoor activities with mountain biking, hiking, and hot air balloon rides being the most popular. Many come to Sedona to visit the vortexes and experience the unique energy that nature has created in these areas. Vortex areas are thought to have been created where earth’s energy swirls or electromagnetic energy converges. Juniper trees are commonly twisted when they grow near vortex areas. The most visited attraction in Sedona is the Chapel of the Holy Cross. This is a small Catholic chapel that was built in the Sedona red rocks and gifted to the Roman Catholic Church. The architecture of the church is a work of art. A destination shopping area of Sedona is the Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village. The Old Mexico style center houses around 45 shops and restaurants. It was planned not only as a place for artisans to sell their artwork, but to also showcase their studios. Visitors can watch many of the artisans create during a visit to Tlaquepaque. Over 100 movies have been made in Sedona since 1923’s “Call of the Canyon” by Zane Gray, including many well-known John Wayne movies. Sedona currently hosts the International Sedona Film Festival. Elote Café is one of the more popular restaurants for tourists visiting Sedona. It is a fusion of Southern Mexican food and American Southwest. The chef-owned restaurant features a menu created with fresh, organic products and an extensive tequila selection. Elote Café does not accept reservations and is only open from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. Hopeful diners start lining up at around 4:00 p.m. for a table. Sedona is a destination escape from Las Vegas. Whether you are seeking outdoor activity, stunning nature views, history, artisan crafts, delicious food, or a powerful area to recharge and explore your energy, Sedona will intrigue and provide.

PERMISSION TO BE ME:

A Guide for Living the Life You Love

A Transformational Guide from Woman to Goddess

By Sophia Ellen Falke

By Karie Millspaugh

Sophia takes the lid off previously held beliefs you have about yourself and others and shows how those beliefs can keep you from creating the life you love. Get ready to transform your relationships; your physical, emotional, and spiritual health; your financial freedom; your business and creative expression; your joy in life; and your ability to do what you want, when you want, with whom you want. When following the steps outlined in “Embracing Greatness,” you will experience a new vibrancy in every situation and endeavor. The author, Sophia Falke, is known for her wit, wisdom, and unwavering support to her clients so that they experience breakthroughs and achieve their individual greatness. She has distinguished herself as an award-winning and best-selling author, speaker, professional and personal development expert, and teacher.

Karie was awakened in the middle of the night with the overwhelming urge to help her clients obtain more self-confidence. After working with many female clients over the years, she noticed one common denominator. No matter how much they wanted to be a leader in their community, they lacked the confidence to be in the spotlight. Karie wanted to give them that special permission to truly be themselves. “When we allow ourselves to see our own special personality traits we feel empowered to just be ourselves.” Karie Millspaugh is a Women Empowerment Keynote Speaker, mentor and published author who also runs a public speaking agency. She is a single mom originally from the Midwest who feels that it’s her personal ministry to assist women to rise up and recognize their own special gifts.

Y O U A R E A B A D A S S AT M A K I N G M O N E Y By Jen Sincero In the follow-up to “You Are A Badass,” Jen Sincero writes with the inimitable sass, down-to-earth humor and blunt practicality that we’ve come to expect. Based on her own transformation from a frustrated 40-year-old living in a converted garage watching tumbleweeds blow through her empty bank account to a successful business owner traveling the world in style, “You Are a Badass at Making Money” is a testament to the fact that, in Jen’s words, “If my broke ass can get rich, you can too.” She combines hilarious personal essays with bite-size, “aha!” concepts that unlock earning potential and get results while uncovering what’s holding you back from making money.

TIFUL Reflection in the Mirror

from within

By Karie Millspaugh

As I sat in the movie theater watching “I Feel Pretty,” starring Amy Schumer, I glanced over to my teenaged daughter as we giggled together at a somewhat hilarious scene. Moments later, we were tearing up at a precious moment where Amy talks about how carefree we are as little girls, only to grow up with jaded thoughts about our appearances. It is very true. Back then, we weren’t as aware that body shapes were different and that a friend’s skin tone may be darker than yours. We just saw happy playmates as we would dance in the rain or blow bubbles in the sunlight. At what point in life did we start looking in the mirror and, instead of making silly faces, start to critique ourselves? What if you saw yourself the way others see you? I had a close friend who would repeatedly body shame herself while getting ready to go out. It would rip my heart in two to watch her get ready. I would counteract her words with positive reinforcement, but those words fell mute on her judgmental outlook. It has been said that we believe 80% of what we tell ourselves and only 20% of what others say. So why do we tend to seek so much outward approval? Why do we check our social media status for likes and comments, when nothing external can fill that void? I’ve always advised that we are responsible for our own happiness and when it comes to love, we should first love ourselves. That means your entire self. Yes, my dears, the cellulite, the laugh lines and even the gray hairs. Your body is the vehicle to your soul, give it thanks and appreciation for carrying around your spirit every day. I also know from experience that you can walk into a room and receive multiple compliments, but if you don’t personally feel beautiful, you will never believe them. Oddly enough, when we feel amazing in our own skin, we radiate on the outside, which is the glow that draws others to you. Karie Millspaugh is a publicity expert, speaking agent, TV host, business consultant, professional speaker and published author. Follow her at kariemillspaugh.com.

What do you need to do to feel beautiful? What fills your soul? Find it. Go do more of it because the world already knows you’re beautiful, but we need you to believe it too!

DO ONE THING

...and do it well

T h e N e w Tr e n d o f M o n o t a s k i n g

By Dida Clifton

Years ago, I found this book on the clearance table that helped my marriage a great deal: “Men Are Like Waffles. Women Are Like Spaghetti.” The premise is that men do one thing at a time and rarely jump from square to square in the waffle of life. While women are more like spaghetti: a tangled mess. At least that’s what I took from it. The talent of multi-tasking is one that we ladies are born with. We have many jobs: balancing duties of the household, raising children, volunteering, helping extended family, and following our dreams of a career or business ownership. With each generation, this list changes more and more. But dare I say, that no matter what some may think, men and women are just different. As a military spouse, I worked in partnership with my husband. I supported his military career by taking care of the household, our daughters, and volunteering often. He supported us, took us to exotic places, and embraced all my crazy endeavors. I took immense pride in the fact that I could do many things at one time. My daughters turned out well, but I did burn a few dinners along the way and always seemed to be running behind.

Fast forward 20 years. Throw in smart phones, Bluetooth, text messages, email, employees, managers, and partners. I still think I’m the “bomb” for being able to multi-task; but recently learned that’s not true.

To d o t w o t h i n g s a t o n c e i s t o d o n e i t h e r. — Publilius Syrus What? Monotasking is the new buzzword taking over our world. Do one thing and do it well. I use this when working with entrepreneurs who are struggling with how to grow their business. I tell them to pick one thing, master it, and focus on just that. What if we did that in our daily lives? Start every day by declaring three things you need to accomplish and focus on them. Then, choose one thing and focus on only that for a set amount of time. It starts with telling yourself it is okay to do just one thing at a time. It’s okay to just make breakfast with the kids and start the day in a happy place. It’s okay to turn off the email while working on a project for an hour or two. It’s working for me. Give it a try and let me know how it goes.
