PubLisher Somebody’s Having a Baby!
H
appy Holidays, Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah. The holidays are upon us and amongst all religions there’s a common thread that runs through this time of year: family. This is a time of year we take a break from the hustle and bustle to make an overdue effort to bring our families together for turkey, gift giving and conversation. This year, family has taken a whole new meaning for my husband and I. We are overjoyed to announce that we are pregnant with our first child! This is truly a miracle, as it was unlikely for me to become pregnant. My body was challenged with premature ovarian failure (laymen terms: premature menopause). From what I understand, we had less than a 5 percent chance of getting pregnant on our own. We decided to look for professional medical help us start our family. With that said, my husband and I would like to give a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Shapiro of The Fertility Center of Las Vegas. Dr. Shapiro made a miracle happen and we are due to deliver our bundle of joy in the spring of 2015. I will keep you posted through Las Vegas Woman magazine and social media, @TammyGrabel, of my progress and share with you my fertility treatment experiences. I had written off the possibility of having a baby until we met with Dr. Shapiro. This was a reminder to me to never lose hope! There’s always a miracle around the corner if you are open to it and make an effort to go after your dreams. Before I sign off, I want to thank my loving husband, Seth Grabel, who has been so supportive and patient throughout this process. He has been right by my side through the fertility treatments and the first trimester whoas. Thank you for being with me through the ups and downs… and ups. I love you. To educate, entertain & inspire,
Tammy Grabel

New Year, A New You—how inspiring for all of us including me. I am ready to make positive changes and take my life to another level. It is such a pleasure to share the wonderful people, places and events highlighted in this issue. First the holidays. My birthday is on Dec. 15 so I enjoy celebrating Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, my birthday, Christmas, Kwanzaa, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Yes, I celebrate them all joyfully. There is so much to do in Southern Nevada during this special time of year. Then there is shopping. If you are looking for that special gift, our holiday gift guide should give you great ideas. There is our fashion spread featuring the staff and supporters of Goodwill of Southern Nevada modeling the latest fashions and classic designs that are available at Goodwill retail stores including glamorous dresses and professional pieces. Sherry Swensk gives us great ideas on how to stay green with some
wonderful gift ideas. Health and fitness are important throughout the year and now is the time for all of us, including me, to take it more seriously. We have profiled some wonderful doctors and other professionals to help us attain new goals of being our best. Whether it is working on our appearance, dealing with medical issues or improving overall with fitness and healthy eating; I met some wonderful people and spoke with friends of the magazine about this new phase in all of our lives. Of course, we honor our Fearless Females and Local Ladies Achievement along with dynamic women in the entertainment and broadcast industry. I am inspired by Beth Fisher’s story on Nina Austin. Why Ranch, connecting children in need with horses, is the scene of some incredible miracles. For the adventurous, Napa Valley is ready for you with great wine tastings, Pahrump is now an
awesome staycation and Rosarito in Mexico offers a winter getaway. Let’s all celebrate the good during the holidays and create A (dynamic) New Year, A New You in 2015.

“Having diabetes during my pregnancy could have been much more complicated.”
“I didn’t realize that my diabetes could make a pregnancy so difficult. But I was one of the lucky ones.”
“My OB sent me to the High Risk Pregnancy Center for diabetes management. The nurse practitioners were incredible. They spent over an hour teaching me how to manage my disease with the latest tools. I learned things no one ever told me before. “For the rest of my pregnancy, I was monitored carefully and given meal and exercise plans I’m going to follow for the rest of my life. “They say that diabetes is one of the most common health conditions that can cause complications during pregnancy. Happily, I avoided them all.” - Jennifer N.
Find out how the High Risk Pregnancy Center can support you through your pregnancy at http://www.hrpregnancy.com/our-care/diabetes-counseling-program/. The High Risk Pregnancy Center is the first and only high-risk pregnancy practice dedicated primarily to pregnancy in Nevada to be recognized by the American Diabetes Association®.

Hanggi was nominated for a 2009 Tony for Best Direction of a Musical for “Rock of Ages.” She also helmed the Toronto, Off-Broadway, Australia, national tour and developmental productions. Her other works include the hit musicals “Ann E. Wrecksick” and “Catch the Fish” (New York Fringe Best Play). Other works feature “And the Curtain Rises” (Signature Theatre); Pussycat Dolls Live at the Roxy with Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera and Charlize Theron; the L.A. premiere of “CorpusChristi” (Ticketholder Award); “12th Premise;” “40 Days;” “Crane, Mississippi;” “Greystone” and “Wayside.” As a film director, Hanggi is preparing “Dear Dumb Diary” for Zucker Productions and “Naomi + Ely’s No Kiss List” with Hayden Panettiere. She just finished production on her debut feature film, “Grantham & Rose.” “I knew I always wanted to be a director,” Hanggi said. “I feel it was just in me and this is what I was born to do. Ever since I was a little kid, I have been putting on shows.” As for being a woman who is also a director, she said, “Especially in musical theater, male musical directors have been at the helm such as Hal Prince and Bob Fosse.” Hanggi believes that female directors are now directing musical theater due to pioneers such as Julie Taymor. “The female directors had a vision and thrived, opening the doors for directors such as me. Broadway is a small little group so I feel blessed to have ‘Rock of Ages’ accepted and loved by people.”

Lisa Dittrich creates diversity in her art from kitties to zombies
M
irror, mirror on the wall, who’s the most diverse of them all? Why it’s Lisa Dittrich of course! Whether she’s drawing circus animals, zombies, Dr. Seuss-eque creatures, kitties or landscapes, Dittrich is always ready, willing and able to draw in detail anything that’s asked of her. It started in New Mexico when she was just five years old. Her father was a water colorist and art came naturally to her. By

the time she was 7 years old, she was drawing semi-photo-realistic horses and entering school art contests, many of which she won. When she entered high school art class, her teacher and mentor, Dwayne Berg, took Dittrich under his wing and helped her to refine her alreadyadvanced skills. He taught her proportion, and most important of all to her, shading; lessons she remembers and uses to this day.
“He saw something in me and he really worked with me, helped me develop my style. He always said my work was too ‘liney’–I used too many lines in my work, so that’s something I’m always aware of, how much of my work are lines and are they distracting,” she said. In 1985 her family relocated to Las Vegas, and Dittrich resumed her artistic passions at Rancho High School. After graduating high school, she focused on her art and found a comic book store owner who wanted some ceiling tiles painted with characters. This brought her several commissioned art opportunities and she would spend the next ten years getting married and raising children in Las Vegas. After being diagnosed with a rare condition, Dittrich threw herself into her art and had a show at “222 Imperial” when Joel Spencer operated that gallery and October 2013 at Blackbird Studios. “Domestic Bondage” focused on the raw femininity of motherhood, as well as domestic chores and duties often
taken for granted by many including our own families. Controversial, edgy and bold “Domestic Bondage” delighted many women, embarrassed some men and made everyone think, even if just a little. “People were asking my wonderful husband if my paintings reflected our relationship at all and why didn’t he help out around the house more” Dittrich laughed. “What they don’t know is that Walt is great, I was only depicting ‘every woman’ because no matter how great our spouses and children are, we all feel over-burdened and vulnerable sometimes.” She recently had a Zombie Apocalypse show at a local comic book store, which was an incredible success so the few remaining pieces she has from the show are on display at The Zombie Zone on Rainbow Boulevard near Charleston Boulevard. It’s an amusing, delightful and decaying look at America’s new favorite obsession: the undead. In October in the rear gallery at Blackbird Studios, Dittrich and her friend, local
artist/lawyer Carrie Bourdeau held a show entitled “Spirited Away” which was a look at cemeteries, death, dying and the after-life. As for beyond that, Dittrich plans to continue her burgeoning art career. Local artist Peter Mengert stopped in while we were speaking with Dittrich and stated very matter-of-factly “We have yet to see anyone so unique and fascinating in the local art scene. Wait ‘til she cuts loose!” Well Peter, we couldn’t agree with you more. Dittrich has already shown us there is nothing she can’t do, few things she won’t do and we can’t wait to see what she has in store for us next. Mother, instructor, entrepreneur, graphic designer, philanthropist and writer; Jessica Kennedy, a Midwestern native, participates with several local philanthropic organizations including the Las Vegas Hospitality Association, the Clark County Artists Guild, College of Southern Nevada Foundation Gala Committee, Metro Arts Council and Blackbird Arts, Inc./Blackbird Studios.

F
or many kids, the path from childhood to adulthood is not always smooth. The challenges they face vary widely, including learning differences, psychological issues and physical difficulties. At White Horse Youth Ranch, none of these issues matter. Through its programs, WHY Ranch builds confidence, encourages integrity and inspires creativity while it preserves an iconic part of American history, the horse. Its beautiful facility is a functioning ranch, complete with gentle horses and trained staff, all of whom are dedicated to helping kids become their best selves.
that can help heal broken hearts and minds with just their beautiful spirits and tranquility. Positive experience with a horse provides each youth with life-changing tools that transfer to all aspects of his or her life.”
Its equestrian program, Diamonds in the Rough, is designed to provide free horsemanship education to socially-challenged youth between the ages of five to eighteen.
“Why Ranch has helped me because I’ve learned that not everybody judges. When I am with the horses, I feel like no one will look at me differently. I’ve learned to make good and true friends at the ranch. It’s helped me with my schoolwork, through teaching me how to keep my emotions under control. I used to feel that people didn’t think I was smart enough. My dyslexia makes me a little slower but now I’m confident that I can do it,” she said about her experience at WHY Ranch.
Amy Meyer is the president and founder of WHY Ranch. She is enthusiastic about its mission and believes that being around horses and learning to care for them offers young people a perfect opportunity to build the skills they need for happiness in life. “Horses are great because they don’t know a thing about schedules, gossip, bullying, expectations or any of that,” she said. “They only perceive how a person approaches and pets, grooms, hugs or talks to them. Inherently, they are instinctive animals 20

Hannah is a good example. She is a participant in the Diamonds in the Rough program and spoke movingly at its recent One Child gala event at the ranch. According to Hannah, she has a learning difference. Because of dyslexia, she reads and comprehends more slowly than her peers.
Hannah has learned an important lesson and she has also experienced the power of unqualified acceptance. “The horses don’t care how long it takes to read. They love me anyway
and so does everyone at WHY Ranch.” Sara is another Diamond in the Rough. This lovable and creative eight-year old has issues with speech and needed a boost to become a confident learner. Her mother explained, “The ranch gives Sara an opportunity to create her own space, where her relationship with the horse is the most important thing. She started the program a bit shy and scared. She’s developed confidence, connection and responsibility, but most importantly, she’s learned that she already has the courage to be what she wants in life.” Sara’s mom has also been impressed with how quickly her daughter overcame her fears and began to enjoy being around horses. By Sara’s second session, she was putting on her hard hat and heading into the stables without a backward glance. WHY Ranch is proud of its many success stories and proud of creating an atmosphere where such transformations are possible. “Now that we’ve found our own home, we are steadily committed to helping as many young people as possible through Diamonds in the Rough. sing their collective power to create a better and healthier southern Nevada, United Way of Southern Nevada’s Women’s Leadership Council are giving local children a medical home. Through their support, children who in many cases have no access to health care now find help and a safe haven at the Medical Clinic at Reynaldo Martinez Elementary School.
“Everybody’s so awesome here! I don’t know what I would have done without their help,” said Lillian. “Basically I would have not paid my mortgage so I could get her into the doctors.” According to Lillian the process of finding help at Martinez was seamless and easy and Leah’s doing much better.
Since the clinic did not have enough funds to reopen this year, WLC members stepped in to help fill the void for a clinic that has served many families in the past. “All the money for schools and teachers will never be enough if the children are not healthy,” said Judy Kropid, WLC Project Funding Co-Chair. For one Martinez student, the clinic provided life-changing assistance. A fifth grader who struggled with asthma, Leah is an active student but she didn’t know when her asthma would attack. Leah loves playing football and softball, but found she was struggling just to breathe. She also enjoys spending time with her little 8 year old brother Freddie at lunchtime, “That’s the only time we get to play,” explained Leah.
“She went for a follow up and she is doing well,” said Lillian. “They are ready to take her for anything that I need help with, so it’s very important to us.” Leah is a student at Reynaldo Martinez Elementary School who benefits from the Women’s Leadership Council’s support in providing her with much needed medical care.

When Leah had asthma attacks, her chest hurt and she couldn’t get enough air.
On the brink of being homeless, Leah’s grandmother Lillian took her in when her mother lost her job. Unfortunately Lillian did not have insurance to help Leah access the asthma medication that she so desperately needed.
“It affects me when I play sports,” said Leah. “I

ercadito is the name of the new Mexican restaurant in Red Rock Casino, Resort & Spa as well as translated from Spanish as little market. It was given this name to reflect the variety of menu items, favors and combinations available. Brothers Patricio Sandoval, culinary director of Mercadito Hospitality and Alfredo Sandoval, CEO and partner of Mercadito Hospitality, both grew up in the restaurant industry working with their father and other family members. After opening and operating Isla at Treasure Island, the brothers wanted to return to Las Vegas and chose Summerlin with plans to expand into Green Valley. “I love Las Vegas. We would visit here all of the time and we are thrilled to open here,” Alfredo Sandoval said. “While we enjoyed our restaurant on the Strip, we know we are catering to locals now. We are very impressed with Summerlin and the surrounding areas and believe this is the best location for our restaurant. I am also impressed with Station Casinos and not only am I glad I partnered with them at Red Rock, but I look forward to partnering with them when we expand into Green Valley Ranch Station Casino.”

As for the Las Vegas location, Chef Sandoval explained, “We did incorporate some items here that you can’t find in Chicago or New York. We added nachos to the dinner menu and Mac and Cheese Mercadito style.”

any people have asked me how Napa Valley is doing after the Aug. 24, earthquake. Simply stated, Napa is open for business, having a fantastic wine year and invites you to come see for yourself. Now through the holidays is especially fun and festive. Napa needs visitors to experience its tasting rooms, join its wine clubs and enjoy its abundance of fine food and wines. One of the winery owners explained it very simply. Wine lost in the quake is just a loss. It can’t be recovered. People coming to experience the community, with its resorts and restaurants and retail establishments as well as its many wineries; provide needed revenue as they share in the incredible beauty that is the Napa Valley. One of the first people I spoke with is Andrew Bradley from Meritage Resort and Spa, an extraordinary four-diamond luxury resort set against a hillside vineyard in the Napa Valley. He reported that his beautiful property sustained no significant damage and added, “We just got busy right away helping others throughout the Valley. We offered discounted rates to residents and free rooms to people in the industry who had no place to stay. We matched many donations to the Red Cross and also donated $1,000 to the Napa food Bank to help with the

to its back wall. According to proprietors Jill and Jim Brandt, the community is close-knit and very attuned to doing whatever is necessary for a fast recovery. Jill Brandt commented, “We are all essentially in the wine business, even if we technically are not. Everyone knows that we need tourism to keep our community healthy. That common goal kept things moving forward.” Jill and Jim Brandt were further impressed by the kindness and can do attitude of the valley. “People asked us, ‘Are you okay?’ ‘Can I help you clean up?’ ‘Do you need anything?’ and all this accompanied by many hugs. Our community stood so tall and it was a very proud time to be from Napa. I would love for the
Meritage Napa Valley response effort.” The resort also posted links on its website so that other concerned individuals and organizations could easily contribute to the Red Cross relief effort. As for the resort, Bradley was happy to say that not a single reservation needed to be cancelled. V. Sattui Windery nation to see our strength. Napa Valley really does Rock!” Laurie Rich of Falcor Winery said, “At the heart of it, Napa really is a small farming community and its downtown was closest to the quake. The quake occurred in the middle of the night so almost everyone felt it and had a story to tell. Afterwards, we all just rallied. Our winery is about a mile and a half from the epicenter but we were lucky enough to have almost no damage. I did have some sweeping up to do in the tasting room but nothing major. Overall, the official response was quick and efficient. Everyone got the help they needed and the community just worked together beautifully.” At Falcor, Rich is now in the middle of an exceptional crush and thinks this year’s wines will be outstanding. Of course, as a vintner, the crush is her favorite time of year. “It’s always gorgeous and sensuous to see the grapes come in. Everything smells so wonderful and everyone is energized and excited. For visitors, watching the whole process adds so much to their enjoyment of the wines,” she said. “And the crush is always so much fun to watch.” Tyffani Sedgwick, who works in marketing for the V. Sattui Winery, agreed. The grape harvest, she reported, has been absolutely beautiful and its quality exceptional. She observed, “Right after the quake, and I mean right after, in the very first hours, there was just a tremendous effort by the vintners, friends and neighbors to help each other out. Almost all the wineries that suffered damage were operating normally in just one or two days. It’s

She wants everyone to know that her winery, like all of Napa, is open and ready to offer the world-class wine, food and hospitality that have made the Valley famous. That’s good news for Chris Pucci as well. This talented young singer performs in many of the areas’ premier wineries and venues, including Peju Winery in Napa and the Kofman Auditorium in Alameda. His pedigree includes the Julliard School of Music and the Metropolitan Opera Young Artist Program in New York City and performances in many famous opera houses and concert halls. A versatile artist, Pucci currently is working on an innovative new genre, which combines rap orchestrations and operatic vocals, to add to the rock, jazz and pop standards already in his repertoire. “I say to everyone to come to Napa, enjoy the wines and let me perform for you!” Every single person I spoke with emphasized how happy Napa is to welcome visitors. Chris Pucci are people who love what they do and love sharing their enthusiasm with other people. Their great love of terroir, the unique place that is the Napa Valley, has got to be the defining characteristic of its vintners, hospitality providers and residents. Spa completes a relaxing vacation. When it originally opened in 1925, the Rosarito Beach Hotel was considered a vacation and health destination because the sea swept air was both preservative and restorative. Early visitors appreciated the therapeutic effects of saltwater bathing and fresh ocean air. People were also drawn to the soul satisfying aesthetics the seascape provided. The hotel’s oceanfront location gave early visitors the chance to enjoy one of nature’s most inherently beautiful landscapes: sun, sand and the sea. “I enjoyed The Casa Playa Spa at Rosarito Beach Hotel,” said Tammy Grabel, publisher of Las Vegas Woman magazine. “Walking into the spa, you can feel the history in this building of the roaring 20s until now. Many celebrities enjoyed what it had to offer over the years, and now it continues to serve as a place of relaxation.” Casa Playa Spa has put together a variety of body services that can help achieve smooth and nourished skin. Natural products are used from the sea and earth. They are specially combined to restore and improve the condition of the skin as well as to detoxify and rehydrate creating an all-over body glow. The staff consists of registered and highly trained massage therapists. They are educated on how to effectively relax muscles, increase circulation and improve joint mobility using light and deep tissue techniques.

Heavy winter swells travel from northwest to southeast daily along the entire Pacific coast of the Baja Peninsula. With the exception of Hawaii and San Francisco, the waves at Islas Todos Santos off the coast of Ensenada are said to be the biggest in the winter Pacific and the swells at Baja Malibu and Calafia are renowned for their consistency. Located just northeast of Ensenada, Guadalupe Valley offers great wine tasting. The Baja California Wine Country is blessed with some of the most ideal Mediterranean climate for grape growing and the valley is home to about 18 wineries. The Valley is home to about 18 wineries that range from to small organic winery, La Casa de Dona Lupe, to L.A. Cetto, one of the most renowned and oldest wineries in Mexico. L.A.Cetto is
one of the most important wineries in the Mexican industry; having achieved a total of 132 international awards in excellence from countries such as France, Italy, Spain, England, Canada and the United States. Almost a million lobsters are served in the Rosarito coastal area each year. “Puerto Nuevo-style” is now a world-famous synonym for the exquisite lobster offered in the local restaurants. Rosarito is justly famous as a gourmet’s paradise since it offers more than 85 quality restaurants that can satisfy just about any taste or craving. Many artists have galleries in town or in their homes Baja´s Gold Coast. Many others also work behind fruit stands, have day jobs as cooks, own bed and breakfast inns, sell real estate or operate the town’s classiest accommodations. Great art is everywhere and going gallery hopping is becoming one the most popular things for people to do in Rosarito.

ompass Living is in the forefront of the world’s new residential tourism industry, catering to digital nomads, retirees, vacationers and expats. Now Compass Living is the innovator in the new health sector called medical hospitality in select countries designed to insure a brighter financial future for single women and men as well as couples. According to a recent survey commissioned by Bank of America (June 2014), more than half of women are now entering into marriage with equal or greater financial assets than their spouse. Additionally, a third of working women now earn the same or more than their partners. While this is welcomed news, financial security is not guaranteed. Death, divorce, disability and medical crises can change a woman and family’s financial security. One of the biggest threats to preserving wealth is the long-term

care of one or both spouses with a medical or cognitive incident. Statistics show that most people will experience a disability of six weeks or more at least once in their lifetime. Worse still, two out of every three people will need long term care at some point. While women traditionally have taken better care of themselves than their male counterparts, the sobering truth is this: Only 38 percent of married couples have a plan in place to address long term care costs for both partners. Worse still, only 10 percent have a plan in place to take care of their parents. While traditional nursing home stays have accounted for a large portion of long-term care costs, the trend is moving away from nursing homes in favor of assisted living facilities. Even so, the average cost of quality assisted living facility in the U.S. is outside many people’s ability to pay. Medical hospitality, partly modeled on the medical tourism industry, seeks to provide all the comforts of home, including meals, housekeeping, laundry and transportation in a safe and comfortable, staffed environment. Because Compass Living allows longer stays and more inclusive services than hotels for a single affordable price, residents can stay as little as one month, or as long as forever, secure in the knowledge that their money will last longer. With no real estate purchase required, residents can come and go as they please,
either back to the states or to any of Compass Living’s global properties. Times are truly changing, especially for women. International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 and Vietnam recognizes women on Vietnamese Women’s Day on Oct. 20. Compass Living’s Parkview property held an event celebrating honoring the day and acknowledging the contributions of Vietnamese women in their Acacia Veranda Dining restaurant. Women around the world are acknowledged as a vital force with their care of their families along with their many contributions, including financial. ho says you can’t have it all. For Gloria Quick the challenge was finding a balance between work and family: a challenge she not only accepted but conquered. It wasn’t that Quick’s journey was prophetically guided or her path was any less fraught with the struggles everyone faces from time to time. In fact, when she found the vehicle that allowed her to reach her destination without having to compromise her priorities, it was at a time when adversity and profound loss was navigating her life. Quick is a formidable force with a kind and empathetic heart. But what makes her so inspiring is that what began as a personal journey became a convoy of success for women and men across the country. Quick (then Hale) grew up in Las Vegas and married her college sweetheart Mike. After working years in sales and marketing, Quick was laid off from her job in 2012. She found a new job but shortly after being hired, both of her parents began to experience health issues. “The hospice nurse said my father could pass away any minute,” Quick explained. She exhausted her leave at work and when faced with the choice to keep her job or be with her family, she chose her family. It was during this time that she saw a post on Facebook about Rodan + Fields, the latest business venture from the doctors who created Proactiv.

Rodan + Fields is an award-winning, medical grade skincare line where its focus this time is aging skin and independent business ownership. “If you can change your mindset and start believing that anything is achievable, your whole life opens up to amazing new possibilities.” Quick said. In January 2015, Rodan + Fields will again change the face of skincare when they officially launch their latest proprietary anti-aging product, ACUTE CARE with state-of-the-art, patented liquid cone technology.

ocally owned and operated, Alligator Soup has been serving the Las Vegas Valley for over 30 years offering the largest selection of custom invitations, announcements and stationery in Nevada. The store also carries unique and one-of-a-kind gift items and home décor. “The wedding industry is still our first love,” Helen Edell, co-owner said. “After all, the invitation sets the tone of the wedding. It allows us to be part of a very special event in a couple’s life. What a privilege that is. Today’s bride has many more choices than ever before in selecting their invitations. Depending on budget, a couple can choose from thermography, engraved, digital or letterpress from one of our 50 books or a custom design created by the Alligator Soup team. Pocket invitations have become very popular but we are seeing a movement back to a more traditional look with edginess to it.” Calligraphy services are also available from addressing envelope to writing out place cards. Stationery and invitations include both boxed and personalized featuring such brands as Crane & Co. (the company that provides the paper for US currency), William Arthur, Arlene Segal, Sugar Paper, Smock and Elum. For parties or weddings, napkins, place cards and other personalized items are also available. Alligator Soup gifts feature a selection of teapots, jewelry boxes, clocks, home office, books, journals, frames, pillows and a host of personalized gifts. top from such vendors as Thymes, Voluspa, Nest Fragrances, Michael Aram, Maple Leaf, Beatriz Ball and Simon Pearce. Alligator Soup offers a line of inspirational products by Kelly Rae Roberts, as well as humorous box signs and novel items such as the Dammit Doll. For children, talking animals, puzzles, journals and scented pencils have been a big hit. According to Edell, greeting cards are making a comeback. Alligator Soup carries a wide variety of handmade and unique cards by Constance Kay and Papyrus. Also available are comedic inspired Frank and Funny cards, inspirational cards from Quotables and year of your birth cards and DVDs. Alligator Soup is one of the last, small, independent stores that carries a variety of pens in all price ranges. They make great groomsmen and bridesmaids gifts as well as for corporate and personal gift giving. Featured brands are Cross, Acme, Lamy, Retro 51 and locally manufactured Fisher’s Space Pens. Edell and Sharon Carelli opened the first Alligator Soup in 1982 and moved to its present location at 9350 W. Sahara Ave. in the Village Square shopping center in 1999. The name Alligator Soup was inspired by a Canadian children’s book of whimsical poetry, “Alligator Pie,” written by a Canadian author similar to Dr. Seuss. “Alligator Pie” is also the name of one of the poems and Alligator Soup is the second stanza of the poem. Also, as Edell explained, “Alligator Soup is a whimsical name that puts us at the beginning of the Yellow

Out of that grew the desire to open a store for fine stationery and gifts for both adults and children.” Over the years, Alligator Soup has served celebrities from the comedic world, magicians, singers, entertainers and actors. Female-owned Alligator Soup and their staff really care about their clients, and as a result, they often become part of the Alligator Soup family. For more information, visit alligatorsoup.com.

ost people remember when they were part of a wedding party even though they might not see those people again. Even in 2014, many people remember where they were the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.
Then there is Las Vegas Woman magazine account executive Kay Kolbo’s mother and the author/former secret serviceman Clint Hill who were reunited after 66 years. On June 13, 1948, Marian Kolbo (nee Opitz), then age 24, was the best friend of the bride and Hill, then age 15, was the usher and groomsman and both stood up at the wedding of Kenneth and Beulah Hill. The two would be forever connected by the ceremony and a photograph. Another famous photograph shows Hill as

the secret service agent who jumped on the presidential motorcade to shield First Lady Jackie Kennedy, moments after the President had been shot. Hill is the last surviving passenger of the presidential limousine. He wrote the New York Times bestselling “Mrs. Kennedy and Me,” and has written another book, “Five Days in November,” about the five tragic days surrounding JFK’s assassination, published for the 50th anniversary of Kennedy’s death on Nov, 22, 1963. North Dakota native Hill was attending Norsk Høstfest, North America’s largest Scandinavian festival, in Minot, N.D. to discuss his book. Kay Kolbo traveled with her 91-year-old mother to see Hill and reunite the two. “It was very nice to see her again. I only met her the one time before,” Hill said. “Although I did not know her well, it was great to meet her again and spend time with her. It is always so nice to see people you met in the past, especially years ago. We had some memories in common and it was a wonderful experience.” The book, “Five Days in November” covers the time period from Nov. 21, 1963 to Nov. 25, 1963 beginning with President and Mrs. Kennedy leaving the White House to travel to Texas. He covers the Kennedy’s trip to San Antonio, Houston and Ft. Worth before leaving for Dallas. As well as writing the actual events of the assassination, Hill then explores what happened afterwards when the body was returned to Washington, D.C.; the autopsy and

returning the body to the White House. He also escorted Mrs. Kennedy to the Oval Office to retrieve the president’s personal items and the trip to the capital so the body can be placed in state as well as the funeral. Between tragedy and triumph, two people who were joined by attending a wedding ceremony were able to spend another moment together to add to their memories. Weddings not only join people in holy matrimony but also those who are there to celebrate this joyous occasion.

CREATES UNMATCHED VISION AND DESIGN FOR TODAY’S WEDDING AND RECEPTION
B
raun Productions merges theater and aerial arts with design, technology and innovation with a vision for events that leave audiences speechless and amazed. With celebrity clients such as Brittany Spears, Katy Perry, Cher, Celine Dion and Lady GaGa; one might think Braun Productions only creates spectacular entertainment events. But they are also experts in designing and implementing unbelievable weddings and receptions. The goal is to produce a special unexpected moment that is not only different and unique but something that no one else has ever seen before. Braun Productions can create unique wedding performances that guests

will talk about for years to come. Designed and performed by top seasoned aerialists, the masterpiece of surrealism and theatrical romance in the timeless moment will wow all in attendance. Steven Diamond, director of operations and business development, brings 30 years of international performing experience as one of the top illusionists in the world performing in over 80 countries. He is a speaker, author and inspirational leader as well. In addition to his impressive list of achievements, Diamond has designed theatrical effects and illusions for numerous celebrities, shows and weddings/ receptions. In fact, it was Braun Productions that designed the scene where Spears flies around the stage in her hit show at Planet Hollywood, “Brittany: A Piece of Me.” As Diamond explained, “One design idea we have is to provide a piece of equipment that looks like a beautiful flower basket high up in the air. Then at some point, the décor becomes a major part of the event. A stunningly beautiful woman in a gorgeous gown and a man in a beautiful tuxedo would come and perform an adagio type routine which would just wow the guests. This is something I don’t see being done in Las Vegas and we offer it as just one example of what we can do. It is something completely new and this is just one idea.” Braun Productions was recently involved with
a wedding at Encore at Wynn Las Vegas which was estimated to cost over 1 million dollars. “We performed an amazing adagio aerial act using our diamond ring prop. The wedding and reception was huge with over 30 dancers with a production value as a well-produced show instead of just a wedding and reception.” According to Diamond, “When talking to wedding planners, we are discovering that weddings are becoming less and less traditional and people are looking for more unique ideas to do at their weddings that no one has ever seen. Couples want surprises and they want a moment that creates wonder. We picked up on that trend and are offering wedding planners a new direction to go in. Wedding planners are looking for exciting new things to offer their clients and we can do it.” Braun Productions’ team includes accomplished architects, planners, designers, visionaries, writers, creative directors, project managers, lighting designers, sound designers, graphic designers, expert riggers, aerial and flying engineers. Braun Production’s awardwinning design work is not limited to angel wings or flying rigs. Recent projects encompass a wide variety of themed experiences that extend into hotels, retail stores, world famous night clubs, cruise ships and casinos. sick visits, sports and school physicals and mental health concerns like ADHD. She is part of a small boutique practice where the medical staff all truly gets to know their patients and become a part of their life.
“I believe there is a lot of truth to that. It is the highlight of my day when I’m surrounded by children. Their innocence and honesty is my motivation to go into pediatrics,” she said.
Caring for children, Dr. Nauman reminds all parents that the New Year always comes in the midst of winter season which brings its own plethora of viruses and safety issues. Dr. Nauman offers the following tips to keep your children healthy and safe. • Even in Las Vegas, during the winter months have them dress warmly and use hats and gloves if necessary.
Dr. Nauman is a board certified pediatrician caring for both children and adolescents from newborns to age 18. Her practice offers regular wellness checks, immunizations, newborn circumcision, nutritional, developmental and growth assessments, adolescent medicine,
• If you or your child is sick, stay home and keep them home. Do not share utensils or drinks or personal items like toothbrushes or towels. • Teach them (and show them) how to maintain good personal hygiene techniques like washing hand often with soap and warm water for 20 seconds or using alcohol based hand rubs. • Teach children to cover a cough with a tissue or elbow. • Clean and disinfect toys and contaminated surfaces daily. • Make certain children (and you) get plenty of sleep, load up on fluids especially water and eat nutritious food.
Nudrat R. Nauman, M.D.
Above all, get children (and yourself) vaccinated with all the recommended
vaccines especially the flu vaccine which is the single best way to prevent the dreaded influenza disease. Every parent should screen their child for respiratory illness during the winter months and seek medical help for any symptoms like persistent cough, sore throat, fever, wheezing, shortness of breath, sweating, weight loss, sores in mouth and rashes. Dr. Nauman became a pediatrician because, “I would not be lying entirely if I said I always had the fire in me to serve humanity and what better way to do that than to become a doctor? There is no better feeling than to see your little patients bounce back to health and out of the clinic happy and grateful, to see them grow up from a newborn baby to walking, to their first day at school, playing sports and finally graduating.” Dr. Nauman has two hospital affiliations, treats a variety of conditions and performs a number a procedures. Advanced Pediatrics accepts most insurance and offers a Concierge Program on a membership basis. The benefits of becoming a concierge member includes same day or next day appointments, minimal or no wait time, 24-hour ability to send a secured email to the doctor, appointment scheduling process using either direct email or telephone, online access to some of the child’s medical records, prenatal visits and discussions about what to expect after delivery. Ninaaustin Living an extraordinary life helping others
BY BETH FISHER, NEWS ANCHOR FOR KTNV CHANNEL 13 “TOGETHER MAKING LAS VEGAS A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE”
I
t’s time to send in my article for Las Vegas Woman magazine. For me that means pouring over notes, stories, thoughts and try TRY to narrow down one person/subject/ nonprofit/theme for this edition. Does it have to be just one? Yes. Debbie Hall, our Editor-in-Chief won’t give me any more pages. There are just so many people I want to say something about. Good people. Worthy people. People like Nina Austin.
mental health licensing—let me be blunt. We require a bit more hoop jumping than most states. (Actually a lot, but the Nevada legislature is set to look at that in 2015.) Well, 2015 doesn’t do Nina much good. She’s here with three boys to raise. Did I mention she’s a single mom? And she gets a bomb dropped on her: Nevada requires an extra quarter as an intern and Nina is no longer eligible for financial aid. She’s tapped out.
You see, I love writing about ordinary people who live extraordinary lives. That’s Nina. Every day she spends hours counseling hurting Las Vegans. You’ll find her at H.O.P.E. Counseling Services. Most of HOPE’s clients are victims of trauma— victims of emotional, physical, or sexual abuse. These folks have been through hell and they trust Nina to help them find their way out. She’s exactly the type of mental health counselor we need in Las Vegas. Did I mention she does this for free?
So Nina—who spends her life helping others find solutions—came up with a solution of her own. Ask for help. She started a GoFundMe account to raise $2,000. The money covers her final semester and internship (which she’s now completed). H.O.P.E. wants to hire her—they tell me she’s amazing with clients. But until Nina can pay her college tuition, she can’t get her transcripts, diploma and, ultimately, her license.
Here’s where Nina’s story gets interesting. Just when she thought she’d completed her course work for her master’s degree, she moved to Nevada. If you’re not up to speed on our state’s

I spent some time with Nina recently. I met her two youngest sons (her oldest is in the military). I saw a woman who is doing her part. She’s not asking for a hand out. She’s completed her master’s degree while working full time and
raising her boys. She did this by herself. But Nina shouldn’t be by herself any more. She’s helping our community’s hurting, vulnerable victims. Shouldn’t our community help her too? Like many of you, I get GoFundMe emails every day. I can’t donate to all of them. But this one is different. This woman is different. Our community needs her. She’s not fundraising for a new car or potato salad. She’s fundraising for her education. So that SHE can serve US. I am humbly asking that you prayerfully consider supporting Nina. You can find her at gofundme.com Just enter Nina Austin in the search bar. For more information on H.O.P.E., visit hopecounselingservices.net.

Start a gooD bag habit BY SHERRY SWENSK
Y
ou’ve no doubt heard about California’s recent statewide ban on flimsy, thin plastic grocery bags. While more than 100 cities in 18 states and the District of Columbia have similar measures, it may be a while before Nevada jumps on the plastic ban bandwagon. But that doesn’t mean you can’t take the initiative to B.Y.O.B. (bring your own bags) when you head out to shop. In fact, chic reusable carryalls are making quite a fashion statement.
stores. Thirty-One’s key to success is its home party approach catering to the bag habit in all of us. Their crazy, cute canvas and polyester totes and cinch sacs appeal to most every most environmentally conscious goddess on the planet. And they’re irresistibly affordable.
Courtesy of baggu.com
If you need some incentive, consider this: The average plastic grocery bag has a working lifespan of about 20 minutes. Just twenty minutes from the time your groceries are bagged at the store to being unloaded in your kitchen. Then, most of them go right in the garbage. And because the filmy crepe-thin sacks are made from petroleum, they can take hundreds of years to break down while stuffed in the landfill, littering the landscape, or floating in the ocean. They often get eaten by wildlife and seabirds with animals paying the ultimate price for our convenience. As awareness of the problem has grown, so have the number of stylish reusable alternatives out there to help keep you planet friendly and fashionable. No one will dare call you a bag lady when you’re carrying Baggu! (baggu.com). These lightweight, durable bags come in an array of sizes, styles, colors and materials. Their basic best-seller is a perfectly-sized nylon tote that can easily hold two or three plastic grocery bags worth of goods. They’re machine washable,
come in umpteen thousand (okay, dozens) of bright colors—both solids and prints—and sell for a very reasonable $9. And they fold up to a small, flat 5 inches by 5 inches square you can throw in your purse or briefcase to keep with you in any shopping emergency. Now that’s convenient. Another fashion-forward tote-around company is Toss. This San Francisco-based company has been pitching their sexy, chic eco bags into the marketplace since 2007. Their totes, caddies and clutches can even be monogrammed with quality embroidery or stick-on initial patches, and make great gifts for gal pals who are trying to stay ahead of the planet-friendly fashion curve. If you’re looking to wrap up reusable bags as gifts, you’ll move to the top of the BFF list with Envirosax and Thirty-One. Both are great choices for unique, fashionable and even personalized pouches. You can find both online, but not in
Envirosax totes boast some of the brightest and boldest patterns I’ve seen for just about $10; they’re really beautiful. And they roll up in a snap, literally, to easily pop in your purse or center console of your car. I love their 5-bag collections that make terrific gifts, when one just doesn’t seem enough. But if you’d rather make a fashion understatement while walking the grocery aisles, this company also produces an Organic Series, with bags made from natural materials including linen, bamboo and fine grade hemp for the same price. Probably the biggest roadblock in reaching perfect B.Y.O.B. status is remembering to bring your own bags to the store with you. While we’re not under the pressure of being charged for store sacks yet, like California and some other states, it could come someday. So start opting out of wasteful plastic, and get a good reusable bag habit going now.

eing a food and beverage manager is hard work and quite honestly, exhausting!” said Viera Hill. When she and her husband decided to start a family, Hill knew that continuing her 12-year career of long hours and all of the stress just weren’t going to allow her to be the caregiver she wanted to be for their children. She and her husband agreed that she would stay home so that she could hear those first words and see those first steps. “After working so hard for so long and achieving a level of success, though I don’t regret it in the least, it really was a tough decision,” Hill explained. After a couple of years, Hill began working part-time with Moms Making Six Figures to supplement her family’s income. Hill first heard about “Moms” when she saw an advertisement in Las Vegas Woman magazine. “My daughter had just turned 2 and I felt it was time to get back into the workforce. But I felt torn. When I saw the article about Moms, I was extremely intrigued. I wanted flexibility AND income, but those things don’t usually go hand-inhand,” said Hill. Having nothing to lose, she submitted a request for information, not really knowing what to expect. “What I found was simple; a group of like-minded moms. We were all ready and willing to work, and quite capable of doing great things in business. We just needed to be able to do our work around our schedules, not someone else’s,” continued Hill. There are a lot of women like Hill. For example, Dr. Barbara Ryan is a former trauma surgeon who wanted to spend more time with her husband when he’s home from deployment. Cindy Posa owned a childcare business, but closed it when the economy tanked. Angie Gange is a former mortgage broker who wanted to help send her three teenage sons to college. Michelle Martin is a former IT executive who transitioned away from that life so she could be there more for her five children.
Moms Making Six Figures can best be described as a marketing organization representing one primary company. Through Moms, interested women will meet with a mentor to learn more about the specifics of the business. A typical workweek can range from 30-35 hours and is usually planned around kids’ school and after-school activities. “I love that I don’t carry inventory and there’s no risk. There’s no income ceiling either, so I just need to be self-motivated and have a desire to succeed. And I love the women with whom I work; the diversity of their personal and professional backgrounds is just wonderful!” shared Hill. To learn more about the company, visit momsmakingsixfigures.com.

Las Vegas Woman Magazine’s new sex and relationship expert will help you start the New Year right!

veryone has questions about relationships, sex, gender issues and just how to navigate living in 2015. Dr. Tiger Devore, known as Dr. Tiger, has many titles after his name including clinical psychologist, AASECT Certified Sex Therapist, media expert on sex and relationships and member of SAG/AFTRA. But most important, he is a person who cares with over 25 years of practice and expertise working with women and their specific issues. He wants everyone to understand that healthy people and couples experience problems in daily living or just dissatisfaction with quality of life. This includes going through transitions as they age, changing jobs, entering or leaving a relationship, going through separation or divorce, death of a partner and approaching dating after a loss. Dr. Tiger is an activist and advocate for the rights of people disabled by HIV as well as a range of people who are considered to be sexually different from the mainstream for the last 30 years. Dr. Tiger wants to reach out and help. He would agree that asking for advice is not a sign or weakness or being unhealthy. In fact, it demonstrates a proactive approach to life.
According to Dr. Tiger, many people tend to get lazy after marriage, especially when it comes to sexuality. They ignore the changes in their bodies. Regardless of one’s status, it is important to always know your own body and appreciate it. There are other life changing events and help is needed to adjust after cancer or other illness, mastectomy or becoming disabled or disfigured. Whether a person has gone through a breakup, divorce, disease, accident or death; it is okay to ask questions and gain new understanding and knowledge. Dr. Tiger is here to help. He has worked sex research clinics at both the Johns Hopkins Hospital Medical School and the Human Sexuality Program at University of California Los Angeles, wrote a sex education program that was adopted by counseling center and health center staffs at the university and college level nationally, worked for NIH as a crisis counselor at their AIDS treatment and evaluation center at UCLA, worked with incarcerated sex offenders and has been an expert witness in court. Currently he works with the Clark County School District, state legislature and various communities to implement programs for people who might not otherwise have access to services and help needed.

“I want the readers of Las Vegas Woman magazine to know that it is not just about sex and relationships but also sex and aging, sex and marriage or long term relationships. I want help those going through a divorce and then dating again and how to make sense of your life when you haven’t been in the dating pool for 15 or 20 years,” he said. “As women age, they change. I want to help them understand how to present themselves, not only to partners but understand their own bodies again.”
He has appeared on television as a sex and relationship expert on the “Today,” “Oprah” and “Dr. OZ” as well as the Discovery Channel, PBS, National Geographic television, New Zealand State television, the Oprah Winfrey Network, TLC and BBC. As Dr. Tiger states, “I love my work, and love seeing the people I work with live well.”
With his expertise and compassion, Las Vegas Woman magazine is proud to announce that beginning in the Spring 2015 issue, Dr. Tiger will be as a regular columnist sex and relationship expert answering your questions. Symmetry
in Motion
Continuing to help keep women strong, fit and healthy BY DEBBIE HALL
I
t began in 1997 when certified Pilates’ instructor Candice Joseph opened Las Vegas’ first independent Pilates studio and named it Symmetry In Motion. Two of her clients, Tania Molina and Antoinette Modrok, enjoyed learning Pilates at her studio so much that they each took the necessary training and credentials to become certified Pilates’ instructors. The studio was eventually closed but the three remained friends. Earlier this year, Molina and Modrok decided to open their own Pilates studio and named it Symmetry In Motion in honor of their friend. Molina is a certified Pilates instructor and certified holistic health coach. A former dancer and dance fitness trainer, Molina also holds an associate’s in arts degree in dance. Molina opened Body & Soul Pilates and for four years ran a successful, boutique-style studio. Molina takes a holistic approach to health, wellness, nutrition and fitness. Through her private holistic health coaching practice, Living True Health
along with Symmetry In Motion, she is able to offer clients a complete approach to living healthy.
Modrok retired from her career to pursue full-time her passion for Pilates, fitness and wellness.
Modrok is a certified Pilates’ instructor, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and continues to be a committed fitness enthusiast. Throughout her life, she participated in doubles team volleyball, bicycling and body building. In 1985, Modrok was crowned Miss Las Vegas as an amateur body builder. Modrok made the decision to change her life and began the process of getting trained and credentialed as a Pilates’ instructor. When Molina opened Body & Soul Pilates in 2003, Modrok helped her with the business.
“We offer a modern take on traditional Pilates,” Modrok said. “There are newer forms such as hot Pilates, but we want to bring back Pilates sessions based on the systematic, integrative, classical approach supported by Pilates apparatus—the Reformer, Trapeze Table and Wunda Chair. I want to say we are not as trendy, but more modeled on the original Joseph Pilates studio that began in New York. Both of us have always been involved with health and fitness and have so much to offer, in addition to Pilates.”
Modrok explained, “When I started to go to Pilates, I really liked it and started going to Pilates more than weight training.” Even though she was very successful in her career in the insurance industry as a president/COO of an independent insurance agency, in 2013,
Some of the services include improved strength and flexibility, increased stamina, stress control, pain relief, nutrition, weight loss, body detoxing and lifestyle and nutrition coaching. Both Modrok and Molina feel that there cannot be too many studios offering Pilates and/or Yoga and that every person’s body can benefit from the work. “We are not trying to compete with the studios, we are more exclusive and working with our clients one to one,” Modrok said. “We work with those that are seeking general physical conditioning and clients with specific goals, which may be hiking the Grand Canyon, running a marathon, improving your golf or tennis game and preparing for a life event.” “Our studio offers a very intimate experience and we want to cater to the individual. We will create and tailor a program to meet that person’s needs on an emotional and physical basis,” Molina said.

Preserving fertility after your twenties
F
or most young women, you hit your twenties with gusto and excitement for the life that you envision lies before you. From a very early age, most of us imagined that we would graduate from college, land a fabulous dream job, get married, and then after a few years of bliss, start a family. The reality, however, is that many of us step into a life that is not quite the same as our childhood dreams. These days, more and more women are choosing a different, less traditional path of life. Many of us opt to climb the corporate ladder and create a meaningful career, putting our plan for marriage, family, and ultimately our fertility, on hold. Alternatively, some women have yet to find their life partner and don’t want to rush things when they do. It’s seemingly harmless as we forge our way into the world, but for many women, this pause in our reproduction can have unexpected and disheartening consequences. When many women decide to finally start a family, they may discover that it’s not as easy as they have come to expect. Currently in the US, more than 1.5 million women are infertile and another 6.7 million women, about 11 percent of the reproductive-aged population, suffers from impaired fertility. Unfortunately,
infertility can affect women of all ages, which is why it is important to begin the conversation early. Today, with developments in fertility treatments and the growing availability and affordability of them, women can take charge of their future and preserve their ability to have a family on their own schedule.
These days, more and more women are choosing a different, less traditional path of life. At The Fertility Center of Las Vegas, there is an offer of hope to help preserve female fertility through egg freezing. Rather than waiting until it’s too late, women should be encouraged to begin the conversation about their reproductive future early, as early as possible to avoid limiting their options. Many companies including Facebook, and Apple are
now giving their female employees specific healthcare benefits to cover the egg freezing procedure. Freezing a woman’s eggs during her optimal reproductive years can alleviate the future difficulty they may have if they choose to delay beginning their family until later in life. With staggering statistics and increasing numbers of both female and male infertility patients, our conversations with our children and with ourselves need to change. beautiful smile is important for oral health and confidence. But many people are apprehensive of going to the dentist which prevents them from receiving good oral health and either keeping or improving their great smile. Dr. Gregory Greenwood, DMD, PharmD, MaCSD, recently joined the Dental Implant Institute. With over seven years of experience in the field of dentistry, Dr. Greenwood specializes in sleep dentistry and implant dentistry. He also specializes in innovative and minimally invasive dental treatments including cosmetic gum grafting, oral cancer screening and implant complication management, and “5 in 1” implant procedures. “As a super general dentist, I am happy to practice sleep dentistry at this world famous institute,” he said. “I also handle all of the general dentistry needs of the office. I work very closely with Dr. Cha.” Sleep dentistry is a new technique to assist patients that have anxiety about dental treatment. Dental sedation alleviates the discomfort and distress that certain patients may feel during treatment. Dr. Greenwood
Sleep dentistry can help those who are apprehensive about visiting the dentist ... offers three types of sleep dentistry: gas, oral and IV. Dr. Greenwood and his team administer varying levels of sedation to help relax the patient both before and during the dental procedures. With sedation dentistry, there is no longer a reason to feel anxious about visiting the dentist. Sleep dentistry can help those who are apprehensive about visiting the dentist to preserve a healthy smile since several treatments can be performed at once with no pain including regular cleanings, deep cleanings, dental implants and restorations treatments. There is also a feeling of comfort and safety when visiting the institute with Dr. Greenwood.
Originally from New Orleans; Dr. Greenwood said he is bringing a bit of home to Southern Nevada. However, he really enjoys Las Vegas. “So many people from around the world come here and it makes it such a wonderful melting pot of cultural diversity.” Dr. Greenwood also helped establish Louisiana Dental Centers in the greater New Orleans area post-Katrina.
“I was trained in pharmacy first and worked in pharmacology and pain management. After I decided to become a dentist, I could combine pharmacy with dentistry.”
Dr. Greenwood has lectured both nationally and internationally as has spoken to symposiums regarding latest trends in oral, IM, IN, and IV conscious sedation. He also volunteers oversees to share his dental skills.
Dr. Greenwood received his Doctor of Pharmacy from Xavier University and Dental Medicine Doctorate from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He is a diplomat of the International Academy of Dental Implantology, a member of the Nevada Dental Association and also an active member of the American Dental Association. In addition to private practice, Dr. Greenwood serves as a clinical preceptor for UNLV-SDM implant externship.
Ultimately, Dr. Greenwood believes in preventive dentistry. “Come for a checkup every six months and I will help you keep good dental health.” The Dental Implant Institute features doctors who have over 40 years of combined experience, and have placed over 40,000 dental implants. Preparing for
a neW year & a neW you BY MICHAEL S. MALL, MD
W Michael S. Mall, MD
hat does it really take to get healthy? The two most common ways to get healthy revolve around diet and exercise. By diet, I mean what foods you put into your mouth, not the latest fad to lose weight. People don’t become overweight overnight, so why expect to lose so much right away. To affect a truly meaningful healthy weight loss, you must commit to a lifestyle change that you can stick with day in and day out. To not only lose unwanted fat pounds, but actually sustain that weight loss, there are several secrets to that success. First, you need to control portion size. Eat balanced nutritious meals with protein, fruits and vegetables while avoiding processed carbohydrates such as sweets and starches beginning with breakfast. Eating a gluten free diet tremendously decreases caloric intake on a daily basis of 440 calories on average. One of the best kept secrets to effective sustainable weight loss is stopping the evening snacks with nothing to eat for at least 12 hours after dinner which will reset your Leptin receptors responsible for not feeling hungry.

bodies. The best motivation for change is looking at yourself naked in the mirror. If you don’t like what you see, then commit to making changes that will get you where you want to be. Every time you are too tired to exercise and pick up a brownie to eat think of the picture of yourself in the mirror. If that is not motivating enough then there is a slim chance of change. Get a medical checkup. Getting healthy encompasses many aspects such as BMI (body mass index), lab values, disease management, nutritional assessment and hormone replacement therapy. To complete the conversion to a healthy lifestyle, you need to work with a doctor with the expertise and time to evaluate your nutritional and hormonal levels to optimize your fat burning capacity. Hormone replacement therapy, if appropriate, can optimize fat burning and muscle building potential while increasing motivation to do all the things necessary to get healthy.
Although the word “exercise” is often a four-letter word to many of us, call it activity to soften the blow. Do something that you like doing so that you can include that activity in your healthy lifestyle routine. It can be anything from walking the neighborhood to Wii Fit to a busy gym work out. Building muscle increases metabolism as every pound of muscle burns around six calories per day.
Why wait until after the holidays to start getting healthy? Prepare yourself before the holidays to make the conversion easier with less pounds to lose by not gaining them in the first place. Write short, medium and long term goals down to make them real and hold yourself accountable to those goals once they are written. To get the entire process started make an appointment now with a doctor who cares about you, to get you properly tested and educated so you commit to a healthy lifestyle before the holidays take their toll on your long term goals.
To further encourage your body to increase its metabolism, you need adequate rest and sleep. The average person needs to sleep between eight to nine hours per night to recharge, repair and restore our

An Innovative
healing center is open in Las Vegas
Body Resonance Myofascial
Wellness Center

B
ody Resonance Myofascial Wellness Center is more than a healing center. Specializing in John F. Barnes Myofascial Release, it offers innovative structural bodywork that releases restrictions in connective tissue, helping the body restore itself to health and well-being. It is a form of manual therapy for pain and whole body healing. It can help anyone suffering from back pain, fibromyalgia, headaches, migraines, neck pain, TMJ, menstrual issues and stress. The body gives signals and the center works with those signals to give relief. Owner Rowena Cua, NCTMB, is also a licensed massage therapist and worked for years in the health industry and corporate health care and attended nursing school. It was her personal journey that brought her to studying Myofascial Release and opening the center. “I used to suffer from headaches and migraines and I wanted relief. At the time I was working for a neurologist and pain management specialist and I couldn’t be helped other than taking pain medication. I tried chiropractors, acupuncture, biofeedback and regular massage and still no relief.” Cua explained. After research, she found Myofascial Release and after five sessions, she felt completely different. After more investigation, she learned about John F. Barnes, PT, LMT, NCTMB, offered a healing seminar for patients in Sedona, Ariz., and she attended and changed her career and life completely. She then attended massage school so she can facilitate one’s healing process. “I want and need to help people and this is the way since it helped me so much. This is so meaningful, effective and powerful. John Barnes changed my life and I want to pay it forward.” Barnes is an internationally recognized physical therapist, lecturer, author and the leading authority on Myofascial Release. Through his 50 years of experience and creative insight, he has developed a whole body approach for the evaluation and
treatment of pain and dysfunction. Fascia is a web of fibrous tissue that permeates the body, but the fascial system is still a medical mystery. It’s been almost seven years since the first Fascia Research Congress. While many in the health care dismiss it, other scientists such as biomechanics researcher Peter Huijing, who was reluctant to attend the first FRC for fear that it would damage his reputation, has become one of its biggest supporters. According to Cua, she has seen results both as a patient and therapist. “To me, it is so rewarding, and very fulfilling as a therapist to see that the work that you do really affects people’s lives. It is so overwhelming at times how Myofascial release has impacted my life personally and professionally. It is very non-traditional but highly effective.” One big event in Cua’s life was when she could help her father. He was very skeptical about his daughter’s practice; however he did come in for a treatment for back, neck and elbow pain. The center does not just treat symptoms but looks for a cause. Doing Myofascial release and energy work, she felt an anomaly and encouraged him to see a physician for a CAT scan and colonoscopy. He was diagnosed with 5.3 cm aortic abdominal aneurysm, got treatment, had surgery and Cua helped to save his life through her practice. In fact, her sister, Rosemarie Cua-DeLeon, PT, DPT, a physical therapist with a her doctorate in physical therapy, has joined the practice. Body Resonance Myofascial Wellness Center offers preventative care, facilitates the healing process and helps clients return to a pain free, active lifestyle. It is also her mission to educate people and offer relief without the use of medication and invasive surgery needlessly. The center is located at 5463 S. Durango Dr. For more information, call 702.776.8881 or visit bodymfr.com.

For theNewYear:

E
very January, millions of women begin a new diet in hopes of achieving their weight loss dreams. Award-winning, board-certified, bariatric surgeon, Dr. Tom Umbach of Blossom Bariatrics—who has been recognized by Newsweek as one of the “Nation’s Leading Bariatric Surgeons” and by The New Economy as one of the “Best Healthcare Consultants”—sheds some light on one way you can finally achieve your permanent weight loss dreams for 2015. Las Vegas Women: Why do you think so many people are turning to bariatric surgery for weight loss? Dr. Tom: I think the answer is quite simple: they are fed up with so many unsuccessful attempts at losing weight!
Thomas Umbach, M.D.
At Blossom Bariatrics, we see people everyday who have tried for years, some since childhood, to lose weight. They come to me after having attempted every diet known to man. They come to me after losing and regaining the same weight over and over again. They can’t bear the thought of another failed New Year’s resolution or another three months of eating like a bird to no avail. For so many overweight people, shedding pounds is a losing battle. And it’s not simply a matter of lacking self-control. Even some highly disciplined individuals who have “done everything right” still can’t manage to keep the weight off. Why is that? The truth is that dieting doesn’t work. Due to a combination of several natural factors, our bodies actually fight weight loss. Bariatric surgery effectively combats these forces. That’s why so many people are turning to bariatric surgery. It helps people lose weight—permanently. LVW: What is bariatric surgery and why does it work? Dr. Tom: Bariatric surgery is essentially the process of altering parts of the stomach to decrease how many calories your body

absorbs, cause you to feel satisfied faster, or both. Ultimately, we help regulate the hunger hormones in the GI tract helping to significantly lessen your appetite. When your appetite is better regulated, your body stops requiring more food than necessary—you begin shedding excess weight, bettering your health, and transforming your body image. LVW: What support services do you offer? Dr. Tom: Whether it is helping to guide you through the insurance process or providing you with as much information as you need to feel comfortable with your weight loss surgery options, we’ll be there to help you prepare. Additionally, at Blossom Bariatrics we have developed several postoperative services to help you in the adjustment to a transformed life: a nutrition program (Blossom Bites), a fitness program (Blossom Bodies), a support group (Blossom Buddies), as well as a style and fashion service (Blossom Beauty). LVW: Where can interested people learn more? Dr. Tom: A fantastic place to start is to download my free report, “Why Dieting Doesn’t Work and How You Can Finally Achieve Permanent Weight Loss.” In this report, I explain why dieting hasn’t been working for you and what we can finally do about it together. Let’s start the New Year with a resolution to be the you you’ve always wanted to be! If there are physical changes you want to make, Las Vegas Laser and Lipo has a caring staff and abundant advanced technologies when you are ready to explore your options. Everyone has their own definition of beauty and health. Dr. Edward Zimmerman of Las Vegas Laser and Lipo makes it clear that it all begins with building a culture of taking care of people.
Edward M. Zimmerman, MD
Patients initially meet one of the patient educators. Marilyn Zimmerman, is one of them. She is highly perceptive, active in the cosmetic surgery industry and teaching for over a decade. She is able to “see” people, compare and contrast the procedures they might consider to enhance their appearance, and help them feel more comfortable. New patients are encouraged to browse through the before and after pictures of other patients who have had similar procedures to further educate themselves. She is also great at assuring that patients get the right procedures done for the right reasons and/or evaluated for bio-identical hormones and supplements when appropriate. “When I meet the patient, we review their digital photos together, discuss options again, review their history, and do a focused exam,” Dr. Zimmerman explained. “We assure that the patient understands the issues, procedure, recovery and long term goals. I sometimes tell patients, ‘You’re great the way you are, but if you want to make a change, let’s talk about newer technologies that make rejuvenation more comfortable, with quicker recovery?’ I teach around the world, so I get to see innovative technologies before they even get to the United States.” All of the staff can speak of their personal experience leading up to, during and after their own procedures. As a nationally accredited, office-based surgical facility, Dr. Zimmerman and his staff are continually seeking measurable ways to improve quality and outcome.
Keeping safety at the forefront is the main focus, utilizing state-of-the-art technology and techniques that help to achieve that goal. For example, using thermal imaging (like satellites use) helps Dr. Z know the real-time, distribution of the temperature inside and outside of tissue that is being precisely heated, to tighten or mold it. He now uses a Neuro-Stimulator to map out motor nerves, helping to avoid them during delicate facial surgery and neck and jowl liposculpting. These tools and others: which visualize veins under the skin before IV’s and Low Level Lasers and special lymphatic drainage devices that decrease inflammation after surgery, enhance patient safety, precision and outcome. “We are here to be of service. Working with people who take joy in the things we are able to achieve with today’s best techniques and technologies makes it all worth it. We offer both surgical and nonsurgical options, “Zimmerman said. So bring on the New You! Explore the possibilities. Schedule a complementary consultation. However, there is nothing more discouraging getting back into your fitness routine after birth than the feeling that your abdominals were ripped out of you and you barely have the strength to lift your own 7.16 ounce newborn. I wanted to feel like myself again but weights and upbeat cardio were intimidating and not helping with my baby blues. I turned to something that I was most familiar with, something that allowed me to safely continue with my fitness routine up to a week before my delivery—our own Intermix training.

I know human body, especially my own. It did take nine months to get here so it was very important to me for the transition to be natural and healthy. On the days that I would look in the mirror and see someone else, I had to power through to keep my head focused on the bigger picture. Through my entire life I was physical and it was scary to think how it was going to be after pregnancy. While I didn’t deprive myself from eating for the nine months, I did keep it nutritious and healthy. I still gained more weight than I wanted. Consistency in my workout during and after pregnancy was the key. It became more challenging with newborn so there were days I maintained that constancy with home assigned workouts. Forty years of research and clinical experience have shown the neuromuscular technique to be effective in treating people with various levels of head and neck pain. Through the use of sophisticated computer analysis, we can help manage or alleviate TMJ pain by objectively deter-
mining a natural, comfortably balanced jaw position, and correcting a misaligned bite. We use TENS [Transcutaneous Electrical Neural Stimulation] to relax the muscles of the head and neck. TENS is also used to relieve pain caused by spasm and tension by releasing endorphins, the body’s own natural pain killers. As a chronic degenerative disease, it often takes years to develop TMJ. NON-SURGICAL FACELIFTS Over time, everything wears out… including your smile As time takes its toll, one of the most visible signs of aging is your changing smile. Front teeth, back teeth – they all wear or break down as the years pass.
Ken After
It’s not just your smile, but your facial appearance too. As your teeth age and wear, the space between your upper and lower jaw closes, and your chin moves closer to your nose. As a result the lower third of your face “squishes up.” You will see: • Your lips change shape – they will get thinner as you age • Jowls appear on the side of your lower jaw • A deep crease between your chin and lower lip • The skin of your lower face “squishing” together • Wrinkles and thin, compressed lips that will make you look older than you are Rebuilding your teeth to their youthful dimensions will not only give you a beautiful new smile, but restore your facial fullness taking years off your appearance!

MOLAR COSMETICS - FILLING UPGRADES Your Back Teeth – The Hidden Dangers Over the past 40 years, many advances have been made in the materials and techniques used to fill cavities and repair decayed teeth. When fillings were first introduced, they were all made of amalgam, a metal mixture containing mercury. These fillings are not desirable for a variety of reasons: they are prone to cracking over time, very noticeable – often turning black with age, and contain mercury. For all these reasons, dental filling upgrades that use metal-free materials are more timely than ever.
May Before
Aside from the reasons listed above, composite and porcelain filling upgrades offer many benefits over amalgam. When you upgrade your metal fillings to porcelain for composite, they are: • Custom made to create a better seal with your teeth • Stronger and harden much more quickly than amalgam • Match the natural color and sheen of your teeth • More stable and don’t expand/contract in extreme hot and cold temperatureswhich can cause your teeth to be sensitive and weaken overtime • Prevent tooth abscesses and root canals

BAeli ndaluz Bringing passion to everything she touches
The woman behind
T
Pico
Madama personifies style, grace and success
ucked away in the corner of a shopping center in northwest Las Vegas is a little-known piece of paradise. It’s called Pico Madama, and this elegant, high-end salon embodies the grace, personality and energy of its owner, Beli Andaluz. When you first meet Andaluz, it’s hard not to be taken by her charm and elegant style. With a contagious smile that makes anyone she meets feel instantly comfortable, it’s no wonder she’s made a career out of providing the highest level of service to demanding customers. In fact, she’s owned successful service businesses in three countries. As people can tell after meeting her, she has a big heart—so her dedication to her son and husband, and her commitment to charities like the Shade Tree Shelter, will come as no surprise. What might surprise people who meet her is that sophisticated, successful businesswoman comes from the most modest of means. Andaluz is truly a self-made woman.
By Debbie Hall
Growing up in Guatemala, Andaluz was the youngest of 10 children. Her family didn’t have much, but Andaluz was always a dreamer. She dreamed of doing great things, and looked inside herself for guidance to make her dreams come true. Her first dream was to start a business of her own. Working in real estate as a teenager, she saved up the money she needed by age 19. She could start a business close to home, but she recognized an opportunity in the emerging tourist industry in Nicaragua. So she moved there and opened a hostel, restaurant and bar. The business was so successful that she sold it two years later for a hefty profit. Returning home to Guatemala, Andaluz was looking for her next business opportunity. A bad hair experience at a local salon was all the inspiration she needed. Using her friend’s connections, she enrolled in the top beauty school in Central America. Not long after, Andaluz opened her first salon, in the historic resort town of Antigua, Guatemala. This is where she discovered her passion.

“I loved the creative aspect of doing hair, I loved the social aspect of doing hair, and I loved the business aspect of doing hair,” she explained. “People would come not just to get their hair done, but to spend time with me and enjoy themselves. It was all about happiness.” The salon was so successful—with locals and tourists alike—that Andaluz expanded into the spa business. Her salon and spa were known as the top luxury destinations in Antigua. But Andaluz was still dreaming. She dreamed of living somewhere bigger. And she dreamed of bigger opportunities for Kai, her son from her first marriage. That’s when a stranger from the United States came into her salon. “When I walked into Beli’s salon all I could say to myself was “Wow.” said Scott Seidewitz, who owns a marketing consulting firm. “My friend was getting her hair done for her wedding, but I pretty much ignored her and flirted with Beli.” Andaluz ended up being Seidewitz’s date to the wedding that night. Three years later they were living together in Las Vegas; two years after that they married. Las Vegas provided the chance for Andaluz to take her dreams to another level. Visiting the luxury, superexpensive salons on the Strip and the big, impersonal salons in the suburbs, Andaluz thought something was missing. She envisioned an elegant, high-end salon to match the luxury of the Strip, but in a small, intimate setting to allow for the highest level of personal service. 90

She also wanted to emphasize hair health along with beauty. The idea of Pico Madama was born. After months of planning and searching for just the right space, the idea became a reality. Pico Madama opened in April 2011. The results are striking. Every detail, from the beautiful, sophisticated décor, to the service standards expected from each stylist, to the botanical Phyto Paris products, have been carefully chosen by Andaluz to give an exceptional experience to her clients. When clients walk in the door, they are greeted by name and offered to sip champagne. Sunlight spills through the large windows and mixes with fresh-cut flowers and the pink and yellow accents on the walls. “I wanted to create a haven, with a feeling of comfort and serenity, where clients could come to relax and forget about the outside world.” It’s no wonder Pico Madama has been a smashing success. In 2013 the Las Vegas Review-Journal named this small, upstart salon the best in Las Vegas. Pico Madama’s clients agree. When Bella Duprie moved from New York to Las Vegas, she went from salon to salon trying to find a stylist that met her exacting standards. She was ready to travel back to her stylist in New York when she met Andaluz. “I just fell in love with her, her personality and the concept of her salon of hair health and great service. I decided to give her a chance and now I won’t go anywhere else. We also became the best of friends over the years.”
Celebrity chef Julio Serrano is also an exclusive client. “She understands my hair. Since I work with the public, I need to look my best. Also, if I want to talk, she will talk to me. But if I want to be quiet that day, I don’t have to say anything. She makes me feel so good and I always look my best afterwards.” But Andaluz’s philosophy is that Pico Madama is not just about hair; and it’s not about just luxury, or even about a great experience. Ultimately, Andaluz’s dream is for Pico Madama to be about caring for others. “I am very fortunate to have a successful business, a loving husband and wonderful son,” Andaluz said. “I know what it’s like to come from nothing, so I want to share my good fortune to help others have the same opportunities I’ve had.” For Andaluz, caring starts with her clients, who she considers her good friends. “My clients are an inspiration to me. When we’re together in the salon, they’ll share their hopes and dreams, worries and fears. I am inspired by their grace and goodness, even when facing challenges. I am privileged to have such wonderful clients.” Caring extends to her staff as well. Because stylists are employees and not renters (unlike many off-Strip salons), Pico Madama invests regularly in training in the latest techniques and trends. Top stylists are sent to the Wella
Institute in Los Angeles to learn advanced skills. Andaluz cares just as much about the community. She sits on the board of the Shade Tree Shelter for battered and homeless women, and Pico Madama’s stylists have visited the shelter several times to provide free hair cuts and advice on hair care. The salon also held a back-to-school event for the Nevada Children’s Center, providing free haircuts, balloon sculptures and treats to needy children. Along with clients, staff and the community, Pico Madama is also about family for Andaluz. Her husband Seidewitz is also her business partner, who handles salon marketing and finances. And Andaluz speaks glowingly of her son Kai, who recently made the JV soccer team as a freshman at Bishop Gorman High School. Like his mom, he has a great sense of style. So with a wonderful family and successful salon, has Andaluz stopped dreaming? Never. She is always looking for ways to improve and always looking for her next adventure. Why was the salon named Pico Madama? “When Scott and I were dating, Kai and I flew to New York where he was living at the time. I decided to cook him a special dinner. We ate it on the roof deck of his apartment building and talked about our dreams for opening a salon together some day. It was such a special night. As we talked, we drank a bottle of wine we really liked called Pico Madama. I said if I ever open a salon in this country, I am going to name it Pico Madama.” – Beli Andaluz

Read about the 1950s and enjoy Christmas in 2014 BY CAROL TROESH
“D
ig That Crazy Santa Claus,” “What Child is This?” and “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” played on car radios and hi-fi stereos throughout the month of December 1955, in El Monte, Calif., and in the pages of the award-winning book, “Wild Winter: Christmas, Clues, and Crooks,” by C.A. Hartnell. Readers, 8 years old and up, will take a blast to Christmas past in this fictional but historically based book.
Hartnell’s love of community and giving shines in her books and volunteer activities for Opportunity Village. Hartnell gives of her time on the Opportunity Village Foundation
Follow Hartnell’s main characters, 11-yearold neighbors, Pete and Carol Ann, through winter’s pages that abound with holiday cheer and lessons about the gift of giving. These AllAmerican kids cruised with teen-aged drivers by brilliantly lighted seasonal scenes; their Christmas stockings had been hung on fireplace mantels and doors while “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” played on the radio or stereo. “Wild Winter” finds best friends, Pete and Carol Ann planning a Christmas pageant to raise money to give to needy families in their 1955 community while they work to discover the crooks who are stealing their money and holiday joy. With fun and suspense, Hartnell transports readers back in time. Today,
board, attending its events and decorating Christmas trees in the Magical Forest with retro ornaments. The “Wild Winter” book encourage kids to read for “Reading is a Gift.”
Hartnell’s “Wild Winter” is book four in The 1950s Adventures of Pete and Carol Ann series. Actual events in Hartnell’s childhood inspired all four books including other titles “Scary Spring: Our Polio Fright of 1955,” “Sinister Summer: Cars, Cruisers and Close Calls” and “Ferocious Fall: Our Wild Weather Escapes.” Each book in the series earned a 2013 Mom’s Choice Silver award honoring excellence, and a Literary Classics International 2014 Gold Book Award Best in Category for Best Chapter Book Series. The judges from Literary Classics gave the book series their Seal of Approval and the following reviews: “Highly recommended for school and home libraries” and “Good old-fashioned stories with good oldfashioned values.” Hartnell’s award-winning books can be purchased in the Opportunity Village Gift Cabin at the Magical Forest with a percentage of purchase going to Opportunity Village, at Amazon, book stores and online at cahartnell. com. The characters in Hartnell’s book work to solve a Christmas mystery and help needy folks in their 1950s community. Hartnell supports Opportunity Village serving intellectually disabled adults and encourages everyone to give of themselves this holiday season.

Hanukkah: a sPeCiaL tiMe During the hoLiDay season For Las Vegas
H
BY LINDA SPECHT, DIRECTOR OF SHENKER ACADEMY
anukkah—the 8-day festival of light—begins this year on Dec. 16.
As the celebration of two miracles, Hanukkah honors the second century victory of the Maccabees, a small Jewish army who prevailed over the Greek army that occupied the Holy Land and was persecuting the Jews’ religious beliefs. Antiochus IV Epiphanes outlawed the Jewish religion before his soldiers killed thousands in Jerusalem and desecrated the city’s Second Temple by sacrificing pigs, a nonkosher species, within its walls. When the Maccabees liberated the Jewish Temple from the hands of the Greek invaders, they found only a small bit of pure, undefiled olive oil fit for fueling the Temple menorah(the eternal light), enough for one day. It would take eight days to produce new pure oil, though, under the conditions of ritual purity. Miraculously, the oil burned for eight days and nights, and the menorah never went out. The holiday also symbolizes that the small army, against all odds beat the mighty Greek army and religious freedom. Each year, Hanukkah celebrates the Temple rededication on the 25th day of the Jewish month Kislev.

The festival of Hanukah includes the nightly menorah lighting, starting with one flame then working up to eight throughout the festival. The menorah holds nine candles, with the center one used for lighting the others. On the first night, one candle is placed at the far right of the menorah and lit while three blessings are recited. Each subsequent night another candle is added from right to left and lit from left to right. On the eighth night all nine candles are lit. On every night after the first, only two blessings are recited during the candle lighting. Other Hanukkah customs include eating foods fried in oil such as latkes, or potato pancakes, and doughnuts to remind us of the miracle of the oil. Children play with dreidels, spinning tops that are inscribed with the Hebrew letters nun, gimmel, hei and shin, an acronym for Nes Gadol Hayah Sham, “a great miracle happened there.” The letters also stand for nit, gantz, halb and shtell, or nothing, all, half and put, which allow you to actually play dreidel. The gambling game requires everyone to put in one coin, then the dreidel is spun and the spinner either takes the whole pot, does nothing, takes half or puts another in coin, depending on what side the dreidel lands.
It is said that this custom originated from the fact that the people would be studying the Bible in homes, which they were not allowed to do, and people would be playing games outside to distract the Greeks. The custom during the festival of light is to give Hanukkah gelt, or money, which would probably have been donated. The root of the word Hanukkah is actually Hinuch, which means educate. Winning the battle and being able to go back to the Temple to continue studying the Torah (Bible), is the blueprint for how we should live our lives. Contrary to popular belief, Hanukkah isn’t a very important religious holiday. No, other Jewish holidays such as Rosh Hashanah, Sukkot, Passover and Yom Kippur outweigh Hanukkah in terms of religious importance, but the latter is probably the most well-known, perhaps because of its closeness to Christmas on the Gregorian calendar. In Southern Nevada, community groups and city organizations often hold menorah lighting ceremonies to herald the Hanukkah celebrations.

Representing Nevada as one of the best and brightest
Each year, one contestant is selected per state and through a series of applications; Butler was chosen to represent Nevada. Applicants are judged on scholastics, interview abilities, extracurricular talents, fitness and self-expression. She is a young role model for high school girls following their dreams and looking to attend college. The organization is both the oldest and largest scholarship program in the county for female students, having given more than $100 million over the years. Notable alumni of the program include Diane Sawyer and Debra Messing—and now Butler. She’s also a part of the Women’s Empowerment Club, National Honor Society, AP Scholar and volunteers for Make-A-Wish. She first credits her teachers at the Meadows School. “They have always believed in me, supported, encouraged and challenged me throughout my academic career. As I progressed each year in school, I continued to experience the same cycle of guidance and trials that have helped me to become the person I am today. I have also been inspired by a desire to better myself and make a positive impact on the world.” Butler also looks to her family for inspiration. “They have always been so supportive and encouraging throughout my life. They faithfully attended all of my school programs, piano, dance and choir performances, and even traveled all the way to Alabama to watch me represent Nevada in the Distinguished Young Women national program.” Heading to the University of Pennsylvania, Butler plans on majoring in philosophy, politics and economics, with a thematic concentration in globalization. Her immediate goals include graduating from
the University of Pennsylvania’s College of Arts and Sciences while maintaining above a 3.7 GPA, making her eligible for the Dean’s List. “Following my graduation, I hope to pursue a Master’s degree at Harvard University Law School. My dream is to then work for a corporate law firm in San Francisco that works with Asia. I started taking Mandarin at the beginning of this school year at the University of Pennsylvania in hopes of pursuing this goal.” As for participating in the Distinguished Young Women competition, Butler explained that, “Looking back, the other forty nine participants and I never perceived our two weeks in Alabama as a competition. Our time spent in Alabama was more of a lifechanging experience that we all underwent together, supporting each other along the way. The hard work we put into preparing for preliminaries helped us to bond and form life-long friendships. The wonderful host family that I was blessed with will always be a part of my life. I am forever grateful to Jennifer and Robert Moseley for their hospitality and continuing support. I was also lucky enough to be able to gain four sweet beautiful sisters: Madison, Gracyn, Claire and Abby.” According to Butler, “The Nevada Distinguished Young Women program needs talented, intellectually driven and ambitious high school senior girls to participate in the program. Girls need to submit their high school transcripts, perform a talent routine and have a desire to meet other intelligent and gifted girls. Nevada also needs state sponsors that can promote the great accomplishments that Distinguished Young Women are achieving. The Distinguished Young Women of 2014 are attending the nation’s top universities and have established goals they are determined to accomplish.” Butler admires that the program encourages girls like her to discover who they are on the inside and to appreciate their individuality. While some might call Daria Butler a Future Fearless Female, she is demonstrating that her future is now and she is already a Fearless Female.

Running to help bring awareness to her cause
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society major fundraiser is the Man and Woman of the Year competition. For 10 weeks men and women competed against each other to raise the most money for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society blood cancer research. The competition ended in the grand finale gala held at the Red Rock Casino Resort Spa. No one knew how much anyone else had raised until the winners were announced. The 2014 Woman of the Year, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Southern Nevada, broke all records in the chapter’s history by raising over $50,000 in the 10 weeks. That woman was Strunk. As she explained, “In 2010 my husband was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia that is not currently curable or treatable. Because I don’t take no for an answer and I wanted my husband to be well, we traveled to the Mayo clinic in Scottsdale, Ariz. and MD Anderson in Houston only to hear the same diagnosis and outlook. There is nothing they could do for this disease. It was then that I knew I had to do something. I could not sit around and let cancer win.” She did some research on the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and found that 79 cents of every dollar goes directly to research and got involved at that point. For this year’s competition, “with the help of my generous friends, family and everyone who contributed to my campaign, I raised $61,500 and received the honor of choosing a research portfolio for my husband’s type of leukemia. I requested that the grant be named after him—Donnie Strunk,” she said. Deirdre Strunk serves as the LLS Las Vegas Chapter Board of Directors Secretary and the Man & Woman of the Year Nominating Committee Chair and leads a team of runners each year with Team in Training to raise money.

“Every year my family and friends train with Team In Training and raise money for LLS while training for the San Diego Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon. It’s a great tradition.” After to moving to Vegas in 1995 and working in the medical field and the restaurant business for many years, Strunk enrolled in massage therapy school in 1999 as her first step toward a long career in the spa business. She recently attended 300 hours of yoga teacher training to further enhance her health and wellness background. She credits her first spa director Darryll Leiman who pushed her to grow within the spa industry. She also stated that Michael Gaughan (owner of the South Point) is one of the most intelligent and caring individuals. She believes this, along with his smart business sense, is the secret to his success. Deirdre Strunk also enjoys spending time with “my family whenever we get together as my two eldest children have grown into wonderful adults and live on their own. I’ve loved seeing them grow into the people they are today. My last blessing, my youngest, continues to keep my husband and me on our toes with her intelligence and wit at her mere 9 years of age.” As for personal time, she takes hot yoga classes at her favorite studio, TruFusion Yoga and an intense, yet fun, boot camp workout at Raw Fitness. Strunk tells everyone that, “Every cause is important. Please give when asked to donate no matter how big or small your donation can be. Every donation counts. No one ever becomes poor by giving.” Deirdre Strunk is truly a Fearless Female.
hen University of Nevada, Las Vegas was searching for its next women’s basketball coach—a person that could return the proud program to its place among the nation’s best— former Lady Rebel All-American Kathy Olivier was hired as the eighth full-time head coach in UNLV women’s basketball on April 22, 2008. As the head coach for the women’s basketball team, Oliver certainly strives to win games but the number one priority is for the students to graduate to pursue their chosen career. She also works with budgets, recruiting, scheduling and other duties throughout the year.

Kat hy Oliver
A winning women’s basketball coach for UNLV
A native of Placentia, Calif., Olivier comes from an accomplished athletic family. Her sister Mary Ricks played on University of California, Los Angeles’ national championship softball team on a softball scholarship. “I had an older brother, Tom, who attended University of Southern California on a baseball scholarship. I tried to keep up with him. In our family, we were always competing. It was just not sports. We would see who could unload the dishwasher the fastest.” At one point, when Oliver returned home from college for the holidays, her younger sister’s coach asked her to help coach her sister’s high school team. “I thought I was going to be a teacher but I became a coach instead and I have loved it ever since.” She attended UNLV on a women’s basketball scholarship. Oliver’s inspirations includes her brother, who was a good athlete. “I just loved being around him; he was so fun. The rest of my family also inspired me. They were very competitive and very athletic. We were always watching sports as well.” Oliver credits many people for her success including Dan Ayala, who was the UNLV head women’s basketball coach when Oliver played, who was
always there for his players as well as pushed them to be their best. Another mentor was Billie Moore, head coach for UCLA for a number of years and first coach in women’s basketball history to lead teams from two different schools to national championships. Oliver was her assistant coach at UCLA for eight years. Oliver was also an assistant to USC coach women’s basketball team, Linda Sharp, who won two back to back NCAA national championships. Oliver also admits she is a big Lakers’ fan as well as a fan of Coach Phil Jackson. Oliver believes that participating in sports is very important for women. “It teaches women to be strong, how to take care of themselves, and how to get through adversity. It teach young girls how to get along with all types of people. It keeps you healthy and alert. It is such a blessing.” According to Oliver, it is one avenue to pay for a higher education. “If you are really good and a Division 1 athlete, you can get a scholarship through sports, even at junior college now.” With women’s sports and her goals, “right now it is about spreading the word in Las Vegas about women’s basketball and how we have so many different young women on the team that are very strong role models and can become mentors for young girls attending school.” She would also like to see fan and community support filling the seats at Cox Pavilion to watch women’s sports and eventually have the women’s sports teams move to Thomas & Mack. Oliver also believes that sports are one way to achieving and maintaining good health. “You need to be healthy to be successful in business, be a good friend and great family member.” In fact, Olivier passed on her athletic traits to her daughter whom she coached on the UCLA squad. As a coach and mentor, working with organizations such as Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada, Oliver is truly a Fearless Female.

For my Girl Scout Silver Award Project, I decided to raise awareness in my city about a silent killer, carbon monoxide (CO), and how we must and can protect ourselves against it. However, my project has taught me more than I thought it would. Of course, I learned a great deal about the topic I chose, but I also learned much I did not expect I would. I came into contact with many individuals whose kindness and generosity in supporting my project have meant a great deal to me. In addition to learning how individuals respond differently to the same topic and approach, I have learned just
Darya Daneshmand presents her project to a number of people during the Southern Nevada Girl Scout Council’s Safety Day
BY DARYA DANESHMAND how much can be done when individuals work together. My interest was piqued in the topic of my project when I met a business woman from Oregon while traveling who had tragically lost her son’s entire family to CO poisoning while his family stayed at a vacation rental property in Colorado, a state that does have legislation regarding CO monitoring. The newly remodeled home had passed inspection without the required monitors. I realized that even in a state with legal requirements, public awareness remains quite important. Therefore, I decided to do my part to raise awareness on this topic in our city. I know from personal experience, that those, such as my own family, who may have the protection of monitors at home, may not think to take the protection with them on their trips while staying at a vacation rental in the form of a portable device, and neither had the family who passed away while vacationing in Colorado over a Thanksgiving weekend. I am happy to have learned that our hotels (to the extent of my research) would not need such devices in their guest rooms since they do not burn fossil fuels for heating them. I have tried to get my public safety message to the public through print media, television and radio spots and even a billboard that may be in rotation and available for a free public service message.
I am manning booths at a number of expos and health fairs. I will try to distribute flyers in various venues whenever possible. I would love to see my project continue to have impact even after I have received my Silver Award. Working on my Silver Award has been an enriching experience for me and I hope it has brought more awareness to those around me. Carbon monoxide is called a silent killer, but it does not have to be. It can be given a voice with which to announce its presence to us clearly, protecting us from harm. While this project has not influenced my career choice since I am still deciding on what direction I want to go, it has made me realize how important it is to have communication skills.

Planet Mazda the WheeLs & heeLs eXPerienCe
A car dealership designed for women BY ANNIE SLIMAN
A
new car purchase is a big deal. Of course, that’s always been true. What’s often different today is the person making the purchase decision. Increasingly, it’s a woman, either buying the car for herself or acting as the main influencer in the car buying process. Recent research indicates that women are responsible for about 60 percent of new car purchases and have a significant degree of influence in over 80 percent of car buying decisions. Stephen Beecher, the general manager at Planet Mazda in Las Vegas, noticed this trend some time ago and thinks it’s stronger than ever today. He’s taken strong and positive steps to make sure these new customers feel comfortable and at home at Planet Mazda. First of all, he understands the elements of the purchase that are most important to women. “Women are practical and come into the dealership well-informed. They’ve usually done quite a bit of research into the options available in the car universe. In order, their concerns are safety, fuel economy and vehicle cost. They also want a car that’s fun to drive and that meets their needs for personal and family transportation,” he said. Planet Mazda makes certain its staff is prepared to address these priorities and also tailors the buying experience to welcome female customers. Many of the professional salespeople on his staff are women, including one who speaks fluent Spanish, to accommodate women who are more comfortable doing business in that language.

start-from-scratch building blocks engineering strategy that keeps Mazda’s fun and responsive to drive personality while it achieves important energy and performance goals. Beecher has this to say about the CX-5, “This great car is fun to drive, the gas mileage is better than any other vehicle in its category, it’s really sporty looking and it comes in either two-wheel and all-wheel drive. I think it’s a car that’s perfect for today’s busy and active woman.”
When customers walk up to the showroom doors, they’re greeted only by one salesperson to welcome them and start the information process. “We know women especially don’t like to feel they have to run a gauntlet of salespeople when they’re often just looking for information. At Planet Mazda, we make it easy, and we hope, interesting.” Of course, the other important thing is the car itself. Beecher is especially proud of the new Mazda CX-5, which easily holds five passengers with plenty of room left for pets, packages, groceries and stuff. Like all new Mazda offerings, this vehicle uses innovative SkyActiv technology. This proprietary engineering system designs each model from the ground up to achieve the three goals of maximum fuel efficiency, low emissions and top performance. In short, it’s a
The CX-5 also comes with many additional features that are important to women drivers. It’s equipped with Bluetooth, for hands-free telephone calling, and with keyless entry, a critical security feature. A navigation system is available as an option. Every CX-5 has a full component of safety features, including airbags and air curtains, and the SkyActiv engineering is designed to ensure vehicle strength and stability. To address another concern that many women have, Mazda offers a strong warrantee and service program. All new vehicles come with 100,000 mile limited warranty, a year of free oil changes and roadside assistance for a year. Beecher and his team are enthusiastic about the Mazda offering and eager to share their knowledge with this very important segment of the car-buying public. “If you’re thinking about a new car, please come and see us,” said Beecher, “Planet Mazda wants to be the best dealership in the Valley for women in the market for a car.” For more information, visit planetmazdalv.com.

How to
treat a LaDy
B
BY REV. THABITI
ack in the day men used to honor women in ways that seem to be in stark contrast to how they do today. Men would not use profanity or cuss in the presence of a lady. Men would also remove their hats in the presence of a lady. Men would assist her with everything from holding her hand going up and down steps to getting the door as she moves in and out of cars and buildings. In the story of the Titanic, the most important people to save were “Women and children first!”
From a scriptural basis a woman is God’s greatest gift to man. In other words, she is the most precious part of man’s existence. She takes his name and provides him ecstatic pleasures, relieves his sexual tensions and takes his seed and produces children. This procreation process sustains our continued existence. Nowadays we have way too many men who abuse women. Men lie to and cheat on them. They’re called Ho’s and *itches. Women have been beaten, raped, humiliated and taken for granted, disrespected and degraded in every way imaginable by men. Perhaps it’s time to ask “Have we men lost our minds?”
MARS VS. VENUS
Women are our mothers and grandmothers. Women serve as the portal through which we all enter into existence. Women are our daughters and granddaughters. Women are our sisters, aunts and nieces. Women are our wives and lovers and our closest companion. She is divine and magnificent. She is priceless and her value is beyond measure so much that every kingdom throughout history was built to serve, honor and protect the Queen. The way to treat a lady is simple. Treat her as if she is the most important thing that God ever made. Pay close attention, shut up and listen to her (sometimes this is all she needs, not advice— just listen). If she is your wife then treat her as if she is the only person that you must answer to, because she is. Always respect and honor her. Don’t threaten, intimidate or yell at her and never strike at her. Always be prepared to defend or protect her from harm. Be honest with her and be faithful and loyal too. If you’re a man reading this asking “Yeah but what’s in it for me?” means you’ll never be fit for a relationship with her because you’re making it all about you when you should be making it all about her. The only time you can get offended is when you’re making it all about you. The only time you can get angry is when you are making it all about you. When you approach her with a good and healthy attitude of respect and gratitude and selflessly
serve her as a way to glorify the Great God that gave her…you are now on the right track. We don’t give to her to get anything…we give to her because we want her to have everything. Make 2015
the year

s 2014 comes to a close it is only natural to think of 2015 and new beginnings. It’s a tradition for many people: make a set of New Year’s Resolutions, promise to adhere to them and then 12 months later look back and say “okay that didn’t work but this time I really mean it.” My feeling is, rather than try to change 20 things at once, why not focus on one that truly matters and that anyone can achieve: improving one’s fitness and health. If losing extra holiday pounds and getting in better shape has not been one of your own resolutions, it has likely been the resolution of friends and family. I think fitness may be such a popular resolution because so many of us are unhappy with how we look or feel; and the reason we are unhappy isn’t just aesthetic, it’s the fact that deep down, we know there is nothing more important than our health. After all, if you are in bad shape, it’s going to be hard to achieve any of your other life’s goals. So as the New Year begins maybe we should all take this as an opportunity to embrace new fitness goals and beginnings. I personally decided not to wait until Jan. 1. My mother and I have been exercising this past year, but in addition, we recently decided to actually make an entire lifestyle change. When we started working out we told our trainer, “We are not trying to lose weight or build muscle, we are just working out,” and our progress reflected our lack of a goal. My new beginning
model and Taylor Makakoa is Fator: The rry Te in er perform ent live at nm Voice of Entertai e rag The Mi
occurred when I decided to compete in fitness competitions. Rather than looking to food for comfort or for enjoyment, I now look at food as nourishing fuel. I begin each day looking forward to my workout, because it’s another step in my plan to set a new personal fitness record. And whether you are 26 or 86, you can always set a new reachable goal for yourself. You don’t have to compete against others, make your new beginning a competition with yourself. And with your newfound fitness, I bet you’ll find you have the energy to start a few other new beginnings. Use this New Year as an opportunity to start again. Do what makes you healthy and happy!

Walk us through a typical day in your shoes. Each and every day I think of new ways to make people smile. I go into my magic shop and invent new illusions all geared to make my audiences feel a sense of wonder, excitement and enjoyment.
Have you ever purchased any As Seen on TV items? It seems I often lose my keys so I bought Magic Finder on TV. This is a device that you hook up your keys to so they never get lost. I ended up losing the magic finder and now I have a huge useless keychain attached to my keys. Luckily it only cost 19.99.
If you could destroy a grade-school photo of yourself, what year would it be and why? I love all my grade school photos! Just kidding! If I could destroy one, it would have to be eighth grade. In eighth grade I thought it would be super funny to make a ridiculous face for the camera, and I did just that. The face stuck and was printed in the yearbook. I got a lot of backlash from my family because I made a funny face.
While grocery shopping, what is your stick-in-the-cartwhen-no-one-is-looking item? I absolutely love coffee. It’s like a drug to me. If I drink coffee, I end up going a million miles per hour and don’t sleep at all during the night. Needless to say I am not allowed to have any coffee after 5 p.m. Beware of the cappuccino; I end up performing magic 24/7.

If we were to look through your iPod or iPhone, what is on your hit list or playlist or favorite app? Lately I have been listening to voice overs. Morgan Freedman and Don LaFontaine are the best. As far as my favorite app, I would have to say YouTube is my favorite social media app and I have been working on my own special magic app. w w w .W oman M aga zine .V egas

Do you ever play “tourist” in Vegas? If so, what is your favorite thing to do? If I play tourist I love to go to the Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens and feast my eyes on the amazing displays. They really know how to decorate a garden.
What do you do to unwind and relax? When I unwind I love to watch movies and or read a good book. Sundays are always fun to relax with the family and enjoy a beautiful day.
Does anyone ever mistake you for someone else? Someone thought I was Pitbull. Then I start showing them magic and they freak out, saying “Pitbull can do magic.” If I start rapping they know I’m not Pitbull. Grabel hit the entertainment scene as a star personality and has touched the hearts of millions.
