hroughout my career, I’ve always been in positions to empower people and help them to become successful which has brought me such joy. I feel so privileged to be the new owner of a premier magazine in Las Vegas, Las Vegas Woman magazine (LVWM). This allows me to work with a platform that reaches a whole community rather than a single company. The sound of that is rewarding in itself.

As a daughter, sister, aunt, wife, mother and nana, I understand the importance of all these roles we have as women. So many people depend on us. We are expected to get it right. We are all in this together. We need to empower one another. I’m excited to continue the legacy of highlighting all the talented women (and men) in our community for all that is being accomplished.

I’m thrilled to bring my personal passions for relationship building and for compelling storytelling (two of the many tenets that drive this magazine) to our readers. That’s why LVWM’s tried-and-true favorite formats— Doctors and Dentists of the Desert, new restaurants, charity spotlight and entertainment—will be complemented by new topics we’re excited to reveal in future issues. These are topics you won’t want to miss. The support LVWM has received over the years and through this transition is precisely what I’ll lean on as the team and I work toward making our corner of the world a better place. We will continue to educate, entertain and inspire by illuminating with articles that are relatable and informative. I hope our efforts will immortalize in history and encourage generations to come. Here’s to continuing the legacy of LVWM (and women everywhere) … one issue at a time. Gratefully,

Also check out “100 Things to do in Las Vegas Before You Die” in our books to read section. Another Las Vegas performer and author shares her very personal and inspirational story in “No Future Without.” While a work of fiction, “Vegas Girls,” written by a Las Vegas author reveals a week in the life of three 30-something women who grew up together in Las Vegas, move away and reunite with dramatic life changes. Check out the restaurants that continue to transform while keeping its delicious menu along with delicious wines and spirits. FIT
APUBLIC INNOVATIVE AND PROVOCATIVE THEATER By Debbie Hall eginning its fourth professional season, A Public Fit Theater brings thought-provoking plays and readings to Southern Nevada. The professional theater’s name was created to challenge the perception and expectations of the audience.
(development director), Tina Rice (CFO), Michelle Tinker (social media director), Shannon Bradley (technical coordinator), Mariya Radeva-Nedyalkova (resident designer), Jamie Carvelli Pikrone (promotions), Thaisa Monteiro (volunteer coordinator), Amy Leigh (marketing strategist), Sarah Mendenhall (production assistant) and Brianna Ramthun (production assistant).
Will the play cause someone to throw a “fit?” Is its message a good “fit?” What about creating healthy debates to keep the mind and spirit “fit?” Is what playwright trying to convey a “fit” with society? Founder and artistic director Ann Marie Pereth was motivated to create a professional theater company based in Las Vegas. “I had just graduated with my Masters of Fine Arts in directing from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and all my actor and director friends were moving back to New York,” she explained. “In Las Vegas, people can’t make a living as a professional actor except in Las Vegas Strip productions.” Pereth has been involved with theater and dance since she was 10 years old, beginning her training with the award-winning Rainbow Company Youth Theatre. She reached out to Joseph Kucan, another Rainbow Company alumni, and together they started to develop A Public Fit. Starting as a series of play readings with friends, A Public Fit moved to The Usual Place in its second season. The company has evolved into a professional theater group offering three full productions and four stage readings for the upcoming season. The Usual Place is the physical theater space downtown for A Public Fit although readings are held at the Las VegasClark County Library. Immediately following all performances, The Buzzz is held to engage the audience members in a moderated and spirited discussion of the style, themes and impressions created. The company staff features a solid female team including Lisa Lynn Chapman (associate producing director), Brandi Blackman (production manager), Sophie Laidler
career took several different turns including public relations and law school, as she stated, “With A Public Fit, I can incorporate all of my skills and be a part of a growing theater group.” In an effort to raise women’s voices and consciousness, the first production of the 20172018 season is “Wit” (also known as “W;t”). The Pulitzer Prize-winning one-act play dramatizes the final hours of Dr. Vivian Bearing, a university professor of English, dying of ovarian cancer. As the theater group continues to grow and develop, strong voices will continue to be heard from the stage and in the audience.

While not a founder, Blackman is one of the original staff members of A Public Fit. She got into theater through the route of mathematics. She wanted to become an engineer but took another career path. Then 10 years later, Blackman decided to pursue a degree and chose stage management with an emphasis on technical theater. Blackman is now employed as a free-lance stage manager with several productions. One of the newest members is Chapman, who is thrilled to “come back to my first love” and was active in theater while attending Las Vegas High School. She received her bachelor’s degree in theater from UNLV to pursue her career goals in theater administration. While Chapman’s

Metal and glass weld together with pasta in the art world of
ANN ALENIK Written and photography by Debbie Hall
nn Alenik has always had a passion for art, especially metal, and has found a way to express beauty in density. She began her career as an electrical engineer who could weld and fix cars. The flying sparks added to the formation of artworks that also functioned as an automobile. But with life changes, Alenik wanted to raise her family and focus on her calling of creating art. Working in steel, aluminum and fused glass; Alenik welds and operates a plasma cutter to cut different shapes. She has also added painting in her repertoire in mixed media using metal and automotive paints. “I grind the pieces out. I then use transparent paints that create depth and afterwards I coat with automotive clear paint. These pieces can be displayed indoors or outside in our hot weather which is another reason I like working in this medium,” she explained. Her inspiration is being around people and the environment. “I like to do faces inspired by Picasso,” she said. “I love abstract painting.” But Alenik is also a foodie and was attending culinary school when she met her husband, David, who at one time was Steve Wynn’s personal chef. They opened The Pasta Shop in 1989 originally located on the southeast corner of Tropicana and Eastern avenues. “At that time, I made three pieces and hung them on the wall as part of its décor. So many customers would want to buy them and I would tell them that it was part of the restaurant.” Encouraged by her then-sisterin-law, Alenik realized she needed to express herself artistically and share it with others.
Alenik even opened her own business, Art and Soul Gallery, in the Holsom Lofts. She also traveled to art shows and actively pursued showcasing her work. But in time, it made more sense to combine her art gallery with the restaurant. The Pasta Shop moved to its present location at 2525 W. Horizon Ridge in Henderson about six years ago. As she tried to make the right decision in selecting a new location, she realized the restaurant’s house special is the Portofino and the name of the shopping center is The Portofino. “It was originally a deli and it was perfect for us,” Alenik said. With the unexpected passing of her husband in 2016, the restaurant has become a familyowned business with her adult children. Bianca, her daughter, moved back from Hawaii to help her mother through a difficult time and encouraged her mother to continue to express herself through her art. “It was so great to grow up with my mom as an artist and my dad as a chef. I saw that my dad was an artist in the kitchen and my mom could create from paint and metal, “ Bianca stated. “Growing up, my mother would pick me up from school in the little trailer and we would spend all weekend at art shows.” She is thrilled to see her mother’s pieces come to life and Bianca has become inspired to create her own jewelry line and paint as well. Alenik also creates more commercial pieces and offers for sale serving spoons, cake cutters and salt/pepper shakers with metal and glass enhancements. Alenik discovered a love for designing jewelry and has developed a unique line utilizing her skills. In the The Pasta Shop Ristoranté & Art Gallery, the love of art and food continues to grow as well as pay homage to the talents of the chef and his artist. Visit pastashop.com for more info. The Metropolitan Gallery of Las Vegas Art Museum A growing, living entity beyond a building By Debbie Hall
I
n downtown Las Vegas, Mark Rowland is creating a living, fluid, thriving art museum. As director of the Metropolitan Gallery of Las Vegas Art Museum for three years, he has contributed to its tremendous growth.
In January, the museum, formerly known as Southern Nevada Museum of Fine Art, was rebranded with its new name. Continuing to engage with the community, over nine events have been held since the beginning of the year including lectures, mixers, receptions and art installations. Cirque du Soleil is partnering with MGLV to showcase Cirque’s performers in art and fashion. Recently, through Cirque’s sponsorship, African dance and fashion was celebrated. Jewish Nevada was recently exhibited to inform and engage about the Jewish community. Chinese contemporary and modern art pieces, part of the modern art movement in Taiwan in the 1960s, will be on display in the next traveling exhibition. The museum, like art, is growing, transforming and reinventing what it represents.
1.
“The new wave of museumship is a place of entertainment,” Rowland stated, “Las Vegas is the entertainment capital of the world. We need to embrace the performing arts as well as visual arts. When we bring the arts together, it makes for a wonderful experience which I believe is even stronger than traditional museums.” Another advantage is that it is a private museum so the director and board can control the content.
2.
“We can feature art and do events that might be considered a little off-the-wall and avant-garde but it also keeps it very interesting,” he stated. One goal of Rowland and the museum is to reach out to Nellis Air Force Base, an integral part of Southern Nevada. “We want to bring in aviation art and reflect the history of the Nellis airmen.” While community based, the museum also has national ties. According to Rowland, the MGLV works for Southern Nevada, especially downtown. It generates tremendous interest globally and makes the museum a unique place to visit. MGLV features over 20,000 square feet of exhibit area with a main gallery, special exhibitions gallery and small works gallery.

IT’S TIME FOR WOMEN TO TAKE CHARGE OF THEIR FINANCIAL LIFE By Lynsey K. Freeman
M
an ever before. Statistics show that, last year, 42 percent of women were the sole or primary breadwinner for their families. As a financial advisor and managing associate I am often surprised by how many successful, intelligent and well-educated women lack knowledge and motivation around investing and planning for retirement. As an entire gender, women have to step up and take charge.
lives avoided? These barriers women face surprisingly lead back to natural characteristics.
Women generally view finance as a complex and overwhelming world. Unfortunately, natural stress reaction tends to result in avoidance. I know firsthand how sophisticated and intricate the topic is, but with proper education and conviction, women can break down these barriers that prevent them from confidently managing their financial lives.
Women err on the side of caution and privacy. Being naturally private people, women don’t seek advice or talk openly about their finances with friends, family or colleagues as often as men do.
Attempting to get to the bottom of this, the conversation I have with women often goes very similarly. It usually begins with, “Well, I know I should be doing something about my finances, BUT ….” These are understandable but avoidable barriers such as: I don’t know where to start, I don’t have enough knowledge, The stock market is scary and I could lose money, or My husband handles our investments. These reactions all lead back to avoidance. Why is such an important realm of women’s
Women naturally have protective maternal instincts, which make them more reluctant to take risks. Over the long term, this can result in lower returns and the risk that retirement and investment accounts won’t keep pace with inflation.
Women live longer. As awesome as this is, it means women have to be even more diligent about stretching our retirement dollars most efficiently. Women are emotional creatures. Women don’t tend to connect well with the numbers, codes and symbols of the stock market. Investing money and being emotional don’t typically mesh well together. In the book “Market Mind Games,” author Denise Shull said, “It’s easy to think numbers are some mystical or mysterious math game, but in reality, the numbers only reflect what other human beings are thinking. Generally, women have shied away from math, and the markets have been portrayed as a math game. The math is just a clue to reading the other players.”

Women are forward thinkers that want to make the best decisions for themselves and their families. The thought of getting it wrong is enough to deter them from investing. This stems from a lack of education and confidence. Most women do think a lot about retirement, but are not necessarily taking the steps to properly plan for it. A little caution paired with a little more effort will help women make the type of investment decisions that will help achieve their goals. Be patient. The good news is that it’s never too late to start taking action and you don’t have to figure it all out on your own. Do some research and find a financial advisor that you trust who can teach you more about the topic. Let’s take charge and spread knowledge to networks of other women. The possibility for increasing awareness is more important than ever. Knowledge is power and the statistics show that we need to do something, and the earlier we start, the better.

United Way of Southern Nevada’s Women’s Leadership Council
E
very June, United Way of Southern Nevada’s Women’s Leadership Council comes together to celebrate the past year and look forward to future successes. This year was different. On June 21, WLC made an incredible investment into the community and announced $543,311 in funding for nine program partners, the largest investment in its 10-year history. These partners are the first programs selected through UWSN’s Community-Based Agenda (CBA), a road map to improving lives, providing strong starts for children and students while supporting their families. Through the CBA, UWSN is working to break the cycle of poverty and create lasting, transformational change for Southern Nevada. “WLC is proud to serve as a pacesetter to move forward the dynamic cradle-to-career framework, a pipeline supporting children and families through early childhood education, high school achievement, post-secondary attainment and workforce supports,” said WLC co-chair Robyn Caspersen. In each of these four focus areas, UWSN has set bold goals to improve lives throughout Southern Nevada. They aim to increase the number of children enrolled in a high quality pre-kindergarten program and reading by third grade, raise the Clark County graduation rate, particularly in the most disadvantaged schools, increase the percentage of adults with an associate’s degree or higher and lower the number of low-income families. In their 10 years in Southern Nevada, WLC has empowered dynamic women leaders to make a greater difference in the community by combining their gifts and this year is no exception. By investing in these areas, WLC is laying the groundwork for impactful change and building on the positive change that they and other UWSN donors have created in the community. Altogether, the nine programs funded by WLC will change the lives of 5,979 individuals in Southern Nevada in just one year. One of the individuals helped by WLC’s community efforts is Yaquelin Meza Martinez, a recipient of the Emerging Leadership Award for Women Scholarship. “This scholarship gives me the opportunity to follow my dreams and apply to law school,” she said. “It’s given me the opportunity to meet a lot of powerful women who are passionate about what they do, and that is just the greatest thing in the world.”
UWSN and WLC are proud to welcome these partners and programs making a difference in Southern Nevada: UNLV FOUNDATION Back on Track (BOT) Program TECH IMPACT ITWorks and CXWorks Las Vegas Workforce Development Programs for Young Adults JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF SOUTHERN NEVADA Preparing for Life Success: JA’s “High School Graduation+” FOUNDATION FOR AN INDEPENDENT TOMORROW Breaking the Cycle of Poverty GOODWILL OF SOUTHERN NEVADA The Career Connections Program SPREAD THE WORD NEVADA Taylor Elementary School: Leaders for Literacy CHICANOS POR LA CAUSA College Access Program COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS Academy Class EMERGING LEADERSHIP AWARD FOR WOMEN SCHOLARSHIP (administered through the Public Education Foundation)

evotion Vodka, the world’s first and only gluten-free and sugarfree flavored vodka and the first vodka brand approved to print nutritional information on its bottles, received the 2017 Rising Star Growth Brand Award. This was the fourth consecutive year that Devotion has been recognized with this coveted award. This recognition comes on the heels of Devotion implementing a nutritional labeling program with its entire line of products. Devotion Vodka CEO Drew Adelman and Partner/COO Mike Calleja accepted the prestigious award in front of thousands of industry executives at The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes, Florida. “It’s nice to be recognized for our efforts, and as we continue to grow, we will remain committed to transparency, especially as consumers today
are more aware of what they are putting in their body,” said Calleja, Partner/COO. Whether scanning for ingredients due to dietary restrictions, or checking the origin of the product, consumers are more committed to reading labels today. In addition to highlighting the gluten-free and sugar-free attributes, all Devotion bottles include the Circle K for Kosher, as well as standard drink size, alcohol by volume, and calorie counts. Its six refreshing fruit flavors include Wild Cherry, Coconut, Blood Orange, Black & Blue, Tiki Tea, The Perfect Cosmo and the original Devotion Vodka. Launched in November 2009, Devotion Spirits is the first company in the world to offer a completely new category in premium spirits marketed as Devotion Vodka. Adelman, a nightlife and dining aficionado and fitness
advocate, searched for a way to marry his two passions and created the company. Devotion boasts 80 proof, six-column distilled vodka made from the finest American corn and is the only flavored vodka brand made exclusively in the United States. For more information, visit devotionvodka.com.

CHEF JAININE JAFFER CREATES THE FLAVORS OF INDIA
C
By Debbie Hall
hef Jainine Jaffer blends the scents, spices and flavors of India for a wide variety of regional and traditional cuisines. As one of the head chefs of Origin India Restaurant & Bar and executive chef for its catering business, Exquisite Hospitality, she specializes in Halal, Kosher Pakistani and Indian cuisine.
Chef Jaffer learned about Pakistan cuisine from her father, who would cook and share stories about his mother’s cooking and how it made him feel. “Food is a very big part of our culture and we share everything over a delicious meal.” She also credits both parents for supporting her goals as well as sharing their love of food.
“The region’s cuisines are quite different especially north and south as well as Pakistan and Indian,” she explained. “North India and north Pakistan feature more savory and sweet flavors using coconut milk, dried fruit and nuts. In the south, the dishes are richer with a lot of spices. I also believe in authenticity and I have traveled to understand and learn about the food.”
Chef Jaffer is not the only one in her family in the food industry. Her cousin is working on becoming a pastry chef in Pakistan and her uncle is a restaurateur. But Chef Jaffer is the only female chef in the restaurant and is proud of her goals and accomplishments.
Along with menu items from the north and south, there is the trend-setting Indo Chine fusion influence. The cuisine is an adaptation of Chinese seasoning and cooking techniques to Indian tastes, especially with vegetarian dishes. As for becoming a chef, “it was part of me since birth. I have always had a passion for cooking. Even my mother tells stories that she could not put me down in the kitchen when I was young. She would be stirring the pot while holding me.”
While her specialty is dishes from the southern region, Chef Jaffer is also proficient in Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, Italian, Greek and Moroccan flavors. “I wanted to learn different cultures as well as its cuisines and I have discovered I love everything.” Born in California, Chef Jaffer was raised in Las Vegas and started out with different career goals. She attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for business management and completed her degree in California with a concentration on digital and social media marketing. Chef Jaffer is also certified in event planning and briefly
attended school to become a nurse. But she always cooked professionally as a private chef and caterer with on the job training for over 12 years while pursuing other endeavors. After working in Los Angeles for five years in hotel management, she returned to Las Vegas, “my home and my peace.” Chef Jaffer realized her true passion and calling was cooking and attended Le Cordon Bleu in Las Vegas to enhance her skill set. While Chef Jaffer remains true to her roots with the menus of Origin India and Exquisite Hospitality; she also wants to emphasize other choices are available. She wants all guests to feel welcome, enjoy the experience and share a little of her culture. That is her ultimate goal.

WEDDINGS BY DZIGN LUXURY WEDDING DESIGN MEETS PINTEREST-WORTHY CREATIVITY
as Vegas is known as the Wedding Capital of the World. It is no surprise that Weddings By Dzign, a fullservice event planning, design and coordination company is based in the heart of the Las Vegas Valley. Often on the forefront of the latest wedding trends is department lead, Lucia Tovalin. A one-stopshop for luxury wedding planning and design, Weddings By Dzign prides itself on doing everything in-house. With in-house departments for floral, linen, lighting, large-format printing, entertainment/talent booking, furniture rental and more, couples are guaranteed a simplified, streamlined planning process when they book Weddings By Dzign for a stunning event. “When it comes to event planning, the more you have to outsource, the more chances there are for error,” Tovalin said, which explains Weddings By Dzign’s all-encompassing approach to event planning and design. “Within minutes, I can walk down the hallway and check in on everything from floral chandeliers to custom-printed wood signage to handmade birch altars—which is a huge bonus for our clients. We have complete control over every aspect of their wedding, and we personally know every single team member who’s working on any given piece for their event. It makes for a stress-free process for our couples and an extremely cohesive event aesthetic when all is said and done.” With over 300 weddings each year to her name, Tovalin’s journey in the event-planning world began in 2012 when she accepted a position as the catering manager for Stevie’s Aviation Catering Company. She then helped open Vic Vegas Catering, part of Anthem Sun City, where she managed private events and weddings prior to joining forces with Weddings By Dzign. “I worked on my first wedding at Vic Vegas Catering and it was extravagant,” Tovalin said of her first job in the industry. “I planned it all, worked directly with the couple and partnered with Weddings By Dzign to provide the décor and floral.” It was then that Tovalin realized she wanted to turn her passion for planning into a career. So, in 2013, she earned her Wedding Coordination and Design Certification from The International School of Hospitality, one of the most highly regarded training schools for the hospitality industry. She then interned at Weddings By Dzign and quickly worked her way up the ranks to a wedding coordinator role and, by 2015, accepted a position as the department’s lead designer.

Tovalin’s favorite part of working as an event designer is “getting to know the couple.” “It is so much fun and it’s a new experience for me every time. I learn about the couple’s personality and how they engage with each other. I then incorporate their personality and interests into their event. We’ve worked with everyone from Cirque performers to couples from countries across the world who host week-long destination wedding celebrations in Las Vegas, and each and every affair we’ve planned has been completely unique as a result.”
From couples that opt to forego traditional floral in lieu of succulents and citrus elements, to underwaterlovers who’ve requested the incorporation of beta fish in their reception design, Tovalin and the entire Weddings By Dzign team have seen (and done) it all when it comes to executing jaw-dropping wedding trends and custom-crafting unexpected design elements. “With such a seasoned in-house team and tons of high-end equipment at our fingertips, we can create anything a couple desires from scratch,” she said. “We can custom-print on nearly any medium you can think of—wood palettes or mirrors or cork. We can essentially recreate any image a couple finds on Pinterest, but always like to make it unique to the couple.” Recently, Tovalin coordinated and planned a traditional Indian wedding, working with the couple closely for over a year to strike the perfect balance of classic and creative. “While there were certainly some traditional elements to the wedding, I also loved that the couple wanted to incorporate some out-of-the-box aspects as well,” Tovalin said of the event. “For dessert, for example, we worked with Donut Bar, a super hip donut shop in downtown Las Vegas, to create a custom cake made of Donut Bar’s famous pop-tart donuts. Guests couldn’t stop commenting on the unique take on a wedding cake.” Wedding trends are constantly changing and traditional formalities more often being replaced with unforgettable, off-the-wall activities and design elements. Weddings By Dzign, with its all-encompassing, in-house team, is uniquely positioned to execute any event vision a couple can dream up. Whether a Southern Nevada resident looking to work closely with designers to execute a vision, or a couple living out of the country looking to hand off the details of their destination wedding, Weddings By Dzign brings event vision to fruition, with unparalleled professionalism, passion and creativity. “For us, the more creative a couple wants to get the better,” Tovalin said. “It gives our in-house team a chance to really flex their event-design muscles. We’ve created everything from stunning floral chandeliers to whimsical Alice-in-Wonderlandinspired centerpieces to altars that belong on the cover of an Anthropologie catalog. It really is an amazing thing to listen to a couple describe their vision and then work with my talented team to turn that vision into a tangible, unforgettable reality.” Weddings By Dzign 5625 Arville St., Suite E Las Vegas, NV 89118 702.684.7300 • by-dzign.com

EROTICA AND A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP

receive many questions about material meant to arouse, known as erotica or pornography. Is there something wrong with the relationship if books, photos or movies are needed to arouse either partner?
inspire their own self-pleasuring regimen, for their long-term sexual health. No woman should be dependent on her man to provide all of their sexual stimulation, and women will do better over time if they have a private sexual life with themselves.
Unfortunately, pornography has gotten a very bad reputation, even though arousing reading and viewing material has an important place in most people’s sexual health. As humans, we automatically assess anyone we see for sexual attractiveness since it’s a part of our primitive brain. Even though pornography has come to mean visual material, the original meaning actually refers to written words, specifically the writings of prostitutes.
Since the Internet is a part of all of everyone’s daily lives, it’s important that we become good consumers of web images. There is now an entire generation of people who have learned about sex from Internet porn they have grown up watching. These videos are not realistic representations of normal sex. Men who have learned about sex from video sources end up with sexual dysfunction because they believe they are expected to act like, talk like, look like and perform like the actors they see in the videos. Porn is carefully created in a studio with several cameras and with a director shouting orders at the performers. Various pieces of video are shot and re-shot, repeated, re-lit, re-touched and reworked. No real human being can perform in the ways that the porn performers appear to in video. There is nothing intimate in these representations of sex either, teaching people absolutely nothing about caring communication through sexual touch. Women who view these videos are almost always concerned about their bodies in comparison to the performers, even becoming so concerned about their vaginal appearance that they are seeking surgery to make their genitals look more like those they see in videos. Porn is for seeking arousal; sex ought to be about seeking intimacy with our partner, as well as having enjoyable play with someone we care about.
Women are “turned on through the ears” according to sexual science while men are turned on through the eyes. Usually, women like reading material for a sexual turn on and visual pornography will be more appealing to men. Still, we as a culture are recently suffering with a fad of women “catching” their men looking at porn and pronouncing them “porn addicts” in need of treatment for their bad habit. The fact is, unless men have withdrawn from sex with their partners, are missing important events, or giving up sleep, chances are that their porn watching is within normal limits for men. Many women feel as if their men having a personal masturbatory life (and viewing porn) takes away from the healthy sex in their marriage. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Men need to have the privacy of their own self-pleasuring time, as do women. Fewer women have developed this practice. In therapy, I encourage women to learn about erotica, sexy stories they can read to enhance their fantasies, to

and embarrassment about sex so that couples can learn responsible use of these materials. Erotic materials are meant to enhance enjoyment and add to a healthy sex life.

UMBILICAL STEM CELL THERAPY EQUALS REGENERATIVE MEDICINE BY DR. MICHAEL MALL
U
mbilical cord derived stem cells have been demonstrated to be the most potent type of stem in terms of regenerating human cells and reversing disease states in over 100 different conditions including lupus, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, traumatic brain injuries, neuropathies, diabetes, Parkinsons disease, dementia and stroke injury. The stem cells do not come from any embryonic tissue from unborn fetuses but instead they do come from the umbilical cords, not paid for, after passing the FDA tissue bank screening form, and are the only FDA regulated stem cell product. Although the umbilical cord stem cell product is FDA regulated, they are not specifically FDA approved for any specific indication. There are well over 200,000 studies documenting the benefits of stem cell therapy for a variety of medical diseases and over 20,000 studies specifically studying umbilical cord stem cells. Doctors can administer umbilical cord stem cells to patients that have conditions being studied with umbilical cord cells but not make claims of treating that particular condition with stem cells to be FDA compliant. There are three types of stem cells currently being used: Umbilical cord derived, a person’s adipose (fat) derived and a person’s own bone marrow derived. Only umbilical cord derived is FDA regulated and anyone can receive them since there are no HLA typing markers on these cells. If a person undergoes the procedure to harvest their own stem cells (bone marrow or fat derived), only that person can receive those stem cells back. Also, if a person undergoes a procedure to harvest his or her stem cells, those cells are the same age as the person. Umbilical cord derived stem cells are easy to
administer and are essentially zero years old. How do they work? The umbilical cord stem cells once introduced into the body through an IV are drawn to areas of damage, injury, inflammation and degeneration by signals given off from those damaged and inflamed tissues. The stem cells set up immunomodulary centers wherever there is damaged tissue in order to recruit cells to repair damage, as well as produce anti-inflammatory and healing peptides and proteins to help in the regeneration of tissue. Approximately 20 million live umbilical cord stem cells are introduced through an IV, and those cells continue to double every 28 hours to a maximum of sixty-five times producing approximately 600 septillion cells that secrete healing immunomodulary proteins and incorporate themselves into the regenerating tissue. Since these umbilical cord stem cells cross the blood brain barrier, they can regenerate brain and nerve tissues. These umbilical cord cells also regenerate cartilage, bone, connective tissue, muscle, organ tissue and skin. The full effects of regenerating damaged and inflamed tissues can take up to six months to accomplish. Now there is a way to regenerate any degenerated tissue in the body whether from trauma, aging, or disease processes with a simple IV infusion of umbilical cord stem cells.

M
ichael S. Mall, M.D. is the medical director of Michael S. Mall, MD | Medical Concierge and New Image Advanced Laser Skin Center. Dr. Mall answers some common questions about health but encourages those with concerns to seek professional help. Dr. Mall and his staff are very passionate about the concierge primary care medical practice. Q. Is there anything I can do medically to enhance my sexual desire and pleasure? A. The answer is complex. Bioidentical hormone replacement is the best way to enhance both sexual desire and sexual pleasure. It is best to find a doctor that does bioidentical hormone replacement on a daily basis, as mainstream medical providers frequently are not up to date with the scientific literature demonstrating the benefits of bioidentical HRT for the past 20 years. Secondly, there is a procedure called Femtouch that uses a microfractional CO2 laser to painlessly, with no down time and no need for anesthesia to rejuvenate the vaginal lining providing a tighter more elastic and active glandular tissue for a wetter vagina during intercourse. The “O” shot uses your own PRP placed into the clitoral area to rejuvenate vascularity and nerve sensation leading to the ability to reach orgasms easier, more quickly, multiple, and more intensely.
By Dr. Michael Mall This can be used for women regardless of hormone replacement status. Q. Are there any procedures that can help me look my best physically? A. Obviously a very broad question. Looking your best physically begins by encompassing eating the best that you can, exercising on a regular basis, hormone replacement if appropriate, and the use of sunscreen and vitamin C serum topically on a daily basis. After that there are many laser treatments available for body contouring shrinking fat and tightening the skin, lasers for removing brown or “age” spots, and lasers for resurfacing sun damaged and aging skin. Complementing that are the common and safe procedures using Botox for wrinkles and injectable fillers for volume loss and deeper lines for use at any age. Q. As a woman, how would I know if I had ever experienced an orgasm? A. The mere fact that the question is being asked illustrates a lack of attention to women’s sexual health. Most people reading the question think that the answer is obvious that a woman will know it when they experience an orgasm. In layman’s terms, it is an intense warm sensation starting in the clitoral/vaginal area rapidly spreading to the entire body usually
W o m a n M a g a z i n e .V e g a s » 4 6 » FA L L 2 0 1 7
associated with tingling, sweating, heart pounding and rapid breathing ending in an intense explosion of pleasurable feelings centered in the clitoral area. Q. I am only 20 years old and I am experiencing pain with sex. Is that normal and can I do anything about it? A. Pain with intercourse is not normal and needs to be evaluated by your physician. There are many causes of pain with intercourse such as infections, physiological abnormalities, childhood trauma, mismatch of size of your vagina and your partner, as well as psychological reasons. A thorough evaluation is indicated. Michael S. Mall, MD | Medical Concierge and New Image Advanced Laser Skin Center offers a new approach to health care, especially for women and their unique needs. Perfecting the Art of a
NEW GENERATION of Fertility Care
Photos by Tim Hancock
ertility specialist, Dr. Eva Littman, founder and practice director of Red Rock Fertility Center, continues to practice cutting-edge medicine with one goal. She wants to assist people in Southern Nevada in growing their families. Red Rock Fertility Center moved to a larger, new, stateof-the-art facility about a year ago to facilitate Dr. Littman and her dedicated staff to be able to help even more people welcome a new baby into their home. The facility is one of the largest in vitro fertilization centers on the West Coast and is equipped to handle a large volume of patients. It includes several dedicated treatment, consultation and exam rooms. It features a separate education center, in which classes on topics related to fertility, group injection instruction classes and fertility seminars are held on a monthly basis. The new custombuilt IVF laboratory is three times larger than the former space and is connected to several embryo transfer rooms and two Class C Operative Suites. This has given Red Rock Fertility Center the ability to offer the complete treatment,
W o m a n M a g a z i n e .V e g a s » 5 1 » FA L L 2 0 1 7
including reproductive surgery, all in the same location. Red Rock Fertility Clinic is also one of the first to include genetic screening for abnormal chromosomes in the price of IVF cycles. One procedure Dr. Littman recommends for women to consider is egg freezing. “Women who are in their reproductive years from age 24 to 34 should consider egg freezing. Women in the 35 to 40 age range who are delaying starting a family should really explore this procedure since eggs can stay frozen for about 10 years,” she explained. For conception to occur, a woman must produce healthy and robust eggs. Because human beings are still biologically programmed to reproduce at fairly young ages, egg production is often compromised for women over 40. In other cases, the problem might be damage from previous gynecological procedures or from treatments for serious diseases like cancer. It’s a fact that some women simply produce eggs that are not as viable as they need to be for successful fertilization and a healthy pregnancy.
COVER STORY >>> She is also seeing a significant increase in the LGTBQ community reaching out to become parents. “We help lots of same sex couples grow their family,” Dr. Littman said. Red Rock Fertility Center can offer same sex male couples or female patients with poor egg quality new hope and a very high degree of likely success with its innovative donor-egg program. This program is carefully structured to ensure the best possible results, and presents several very important advantages. The sperm of the male partner fertilizes the eggs. The female partner carries the baby and bonds naturally with her baby during her pregnancy. Donor eggs allow male LGBTQ couples to realize their dreams of family with help both from donor eggs and a gestational carrier. Red Rock Fertility Center has developed its egg donor program with great sensitivity and with all the safeguards couples need to be comfortable and enthusiastic about their choices. Each couple chooses from an extensive list of prescreened potential donors, with each of these potential donors presenting a 12-page profile detailing all their important specifics. These include a full medical/ reproductive history and a complete outline of the donor’s ethnic and family background. In the donor profile, RRFC patients also learn about the donor’s education level, professional, and personal skills, religious background, temperament and personality.
The next characteristics in the profile are physical and contain information both from the donor and their family, which includes parents, siblings and grandparents. These genetic characteristics include donor eye color, shape and size, facial features, height and weight and hair color, type and fullness as well as hair color as a child. Dr. Littman also understands that it’s critical for patients to understand the strength of the RRFC donor pool itself. Usually, egg donors are women in their early 20s. Women from a wide variety of social, ethnic and educational backgrounds make the decision to become egg donors. Many are professionals, with occupations across a broad spectrum, and most are motivated to become donors because of a strong wish to help others. All potential donors are personally interviewed and screened by Red Rock Fertility Center’s experienced staff. In this process, donors are also tested for any genetic or transmittable

diseases and are evaluated for general and genetic health. The rigorous selection process helps to ensure the best possible pool of donors and the most positive results for RRFC patients. To protect everyone’s privacy, all donors are anonymous unless it is a family member of the patient, and all personal information for donor egg recipients is strictly confidential. Neither party knows any identifying details about the other, and full legal safeguards and protections are in place. Once patients have selected a donor, the next step is fertilizing the eggs. This process is the same as it is for a standard in vitro fertilization cycle. First, the donor eggs need to be harvested at the correct time of egg maturation. The typical donor cycle results in the retrieval of 12 to 18 healthy eggs. The eggs are then fertilized in the lab, using the sperm of the male partner(s). The healthy fertilized eggs are then implanted in the mother-to-be at the correct time in her cycle. RRFC is very proud of its success rate of over 78 percent with donor eggs. The positive patient experience is very important to Dr. Littman and Red Rock Fertility Center staff. One way the center keeps in touch with its patients is a newsletter with the latest news and other information. Red Rock Fertility Center hosted its annual Baby Reunion and Egg Hunt always held on the weekend after Easter. Happy mothers, fathers and children enjoyed a beautiful sunny day and shared the company of other families with the same
experience. For Dr. Littman and her dedicated staff, the reunion is an opportunity to see the joy and happiness that their hard work brings to the clinic’s patients and their families. “Next year we will probably need a bigger space.” Dr. Littman also has been successful as an entrepreneur. She recently completed the Las Vegas Leadership 2017 program. She was a participant in the Emerging Leaders Program and as a result of her hard work and expertise, Dr. Littman won the 2017 Small Business Person of the Year award for the State of Nevada given by the U.S. Small Business Administration. She also gives back to the community diligently by working with United Way, Faith Lutheran, Nevada Blind Children’s Foundation, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada. Dr. Littman and Red Rock Fertility Clinic are a big part of the Southern Nevada community and appreciate having an impact in these charitable organizations. She also knows that all families worry about the financial parts of treatment. Dr. Littman and her staff are firmly committed to full disclosure. Each patient, and their supporting partner, are fully aware of costs ahead of time, which are outlined clearly with no hidden or unexpected charges. Before treatment begins, her staff does exhaustive due diligence to explore all possible insurance coverages and benefits. Dr. Littman makes sure that her patients have accessible and reasonable payment options as they begin the journey toward parenthood.
“One thing I’ve really learned in my practice is that no one fertility solution works for everyone. Our treatment programs provides a sensitive and affirming way for many people to start a family. Therefore, I’m committed to making it the very best program available.” Eva Littman, M.D., FACOG Red Rock Fertility Center 9120 W. EVA LIANG When Center For Sight medical director, Dr. Eva Liang, decided to open her own ophthalmology practice, the choice of Las Vegas was a natural one.
“While not every patient can achieve 20/20 vision, they can achieve their own best vision, and that’s what we call 20/Happy,” Dr. Liang said.
“This is my home town. I went to grade school, high school and my clinical sciences for medical school here. After working in other cities, I think it was the right time for me to come back to Las Vegas and put the sum of my experience together here,” said Dr. Liang.
Center For Sight offers the most comprehensive, advanced eye care solutions available in Southern Nevada, including the latest micro-invasive glaucoma surgery options, which can be performed with or without cataract surgery.
The daughter of immigrants from Taiwan, Dr. Liang was imbued with an entrepreneurial spirit from an early age. “My father ran an import-export business that required him to travel to Asia routinely. Growing up, I learned a lot about working smart and the importance of customer service,” she said. Early in her medical career, Dr. Liang was an employed physician, first in a private practice, followed by a couple of managed care groups. While these settings enabled her to refine her skills as a board-certified ophthalmologist and refractive surgeon, it also frustrated her goal of promoting a culture of service.

“I quickly discovered that introducing change—achieving the best patient experience possible—is nearly impossible within a large organization that was already firmly established,” said Dr. Liang. With innovation in mind, Dr. Liang teamed up with her husband, healthcare executive Anthony Ausband, to build her own practice, and in 2013, she opened Center For Sight, in Las Vegas and Henderson. From the outset, she trained her vision on building an eye care practice that would deliver what she calls, “20/ Happy” results.

Among the most frequently performed procedures at Center For Sight are intraocular lens implantation, often with laser cataract surgery; eye lid surgery; treatments for dry eye; and refractive surgery, for near-vision and distant-vision correction. Corneal inlay procedures to correct near vision are a significant area of growth for the practice. Led by Dr. Liang’s unwavering commitment to patient care and service, this fall, Center For Sight will be opening its fourth location, where well-developed care systems and the most advanced technologies in ophthalmic care will be featured. The upscale Tivoli Village location incorporates hospitality elements not typically associated with medical offices. Patients can stroll the outdoor pedestrian mall and shop or visit a café—while waiting for the effects of pupil dilation to subside. It also offers underground parking with an elevator to the practice entrance. “What we learn at Tivoli Village will be used to further improve the service environment, throughout our organization. At Center For Sight, we recognize that as people live longer and have better quality of lives, they want to see their best in order to do their best. For us, the patient always comes first, and we will continue to do our best to deliver on our 20/Happy promise, every day.”

LAURIE BLOCH-JOHNSON
Laurie Bloch-Johnson has been practicing for over 30 years creating a beautiful, natural smile for her patients as well as maintaining good dental health. According to Dr. Laurie, even small improvements can make a big difference in a smile, how someone feels about themselves and how others see them. There are no “typical” patients— ages range from teenagers to over 80 years of age. Her patients come from all walks of life and come for a variety of reasons. “The shape of the tooth is just as important as the color,” she explained. “I look at the whole patient including their face, color of their eyes, skin tone and even their personality.” It could be changing pointed teeth, dominant gums or even closing a small gap. It can make all of the difference in creating a beautiful smile. Dr. Laurie’s Exceptional Dentistry is a full-service dental practice that includes full mouth reconstruction, dental implants, TMJ disorder, including treatment for snoring, treatment for migraines, headaches caused from bite problems, veneers and periodontal laser management. Her practice offers smile design, smile makeover, dental facelifts, instant orthodontics, porcelain veneers, crowns inlays and onlays, tooth bonding, tooth-colored fillings, porcelain fillings, teeth whitening and gum contouring. She has worked with her master dental ceramist for almost 20 years, and he is available for custom shading and discussing the process with clients. Her practice is to see one patient at a time. The initial visit takes
about 90 minutes, and Dr. Laurie spends about 45 minutes with each of her patients. Investing that much time and detail here saves time and allows the patients to make sure that Dr. Laurie is the best possible fit. During the initial visit, there is an examination of the mouth, teeth, jaw joints (TMJ) and masticatory muscles. One of the many uses for the 42-inch television in each exam room is that, as a camera takes photos of the mouth, the patient can see exactly what Dr. Laurie sees with magnifying glasses. State-of-the-art dental technology allows her practice to deliver a more accurate and detailed diagnosis. Some of the different types of technology include digital X-rays, intra-oral cameras, computerized bite analysis and lasers for soft and hard tissue applications. Dr. Laurie is passionate about dentistry and absolutely loves her job. In fact, she is one of the most senior instructors at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies where she teaches dentists from all over the world. Her dental practice is a model for these dentists to visit and see the latest technology in use. Dr. Laurie is a member of American Dental Association, Nevada Dental Association, the International Association of Comprehensive Aesthetics and International College of Cranio-Mandibular Orthopedics. She is also an author and lecturer nationally and internationally. Check out her interview on YouTube on The Wellness Hour with Randy Alvarez and Dr. Laurie Bloch-Johnson (youtu.be/ v-Q9IUhqRE0).

CYNTHIA PAYNE Dr. Cynthia Payne is a board certified optometrist specializing in the treatment and management of ocular disease and owner of Trendsetter Eyewear. She enjoys working with people to improve their vision, assess the health of their eyes and treat eye disease. She also provides pre- and postoperative care for patients at LASIK of Nevada in Las Vegas and Reno. Motivated by the freedom optometry provides, from the ability to practice anywhere, choosing to be self-employed or work for another doctor full time or part time, to working in research and teaching; Dr. Payne loved having the choices that optometry provided. Dr. Payne has been practicing in private optometry since 1997 and opened Trendsetter Eyewear in 2011. She is a Distinguished Woman of Nevada member. Dr. Payne attended the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, where she earned her Doctorate of Optometry. A graduate of Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee, she received a Bachelor of Science with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry. She also completed one year of graduate study at the University of Tennessee, Memphis in neuroscience and worked for an additional two years as a research assistant in Cancer Pharmacology at the University of Tennessee, Memphis. Dr. Payne personally selects eyewear for Trendsetter Eyewear for quality and distinctive styles. Her goal is to have a selection that everyone can find a frame
that can give him or her the look they want with the perfect fit. Optometry is somewhat unique in that there is both an optical component and a health care component. For example, in the optical field, some of the newest options are digitally designed eyeglass lenses (computer designed for optimized vision, i.e. sharper vision in all parts of the lens and better night vision) and more contact lenses options that are healthier to wear (more oxygen transmission, stay cleaner, better for dryness). In the health care field, managing dry eye has become a major challenge. There are new modifications, artificial tears and eyelid oil glands treatments. There is also a new focus on counseling for nutritional practices and blink awareness to try to decrease dry eye symptoms. One of the healthiest choices a person can make for their eyes is ultraviolet protection. Ultraviolet increases the incidence of cataracts, macular degeneration, pterygium and skin cancer. Choosing sunglasses or eyeglasses with UV protection helps decrease the risk of these diseases of the eye (and wrinkles). All the things that are good for the rest of the body also apply to the eyes; like no smoking (smoking increases the risks of macular degeneration, cataract, glaucoma, diabetes, dry-eye syndrome, thyroid disease); maintaining a balanced nutrition (antioxidants, omega-3, lutein and zeaxanthin for the macula) and routine exercise. Genetic wellness testing can help someone eat foods that work with their DNA to optimize their health.

sophisticated technique mastered by Dr. Cha. The hydraulic sinus lift technique gives the dentist the ability to place implants simultaneously in the sinus, with very minimal pain.
The institute offers the newest model, state-of-the-art WaterLase Laser Dentistry. This treatment offers little or no discomfort, rapid healing and, in many cases, no anesthetic for good dental health with a beautiful smile. This technology is a non-invasive surgical procedure that does not require opening the gums. It also promotes new bone regeneration in the area where there was disease.
Traditionally, implants cannot be placed near the sinus, since the tissue is not thick enough to withstand the procedure. But, with this technique, Dr. Cha can go through the same hole where the tooth was removed, gently lift the tissue (which is the membrane that lines the sinus) and then add bone to create enough space to place the implant under the membrane of the sinus. The implant works like a tent, keeping the membrane elevated. It takes about four months for the implant and bone to integrate.
“Laser treatment is the best tool to treat disease around the implants,” Dr. Cha explained. “It doesn’t hurt because it cools down the area with water.”

Working with her associates, Dr. Cha offers expertise in dental implants and periodontics in full mouth reconstruction, especially with the most complicated cases. She offers advanced dental care through revolutionary procedures, such as the 5 in 1 Technique, Sinus Lift and Vertical Translation, all procedures developed by the Dental Implant Institute. These procedures are less invasive, causes very little to no pain, have a short-term recovery and provides a much higher rate of success. Dr. Chen has developed an instrument specifically designed to remove failing and/ or compromised implants. This instrument allows to less invasively remove and replace implants. Another innovative surgery developed by Dr. Chen is the hydraulic sinus, a very W o m a n M a g a z i n e .V e g a s » 6 1 » FA L L 2 0 1 7
A dental implant is a titanium screw that is placed in the jaw bone. Its purpose is to replace the missing root of a tooth. She assists in designing implants that combine the best features of the varying systems which helps both simplify the surgical process and shortens the chair time for the patient. The whole process of placing the implant can take only a matter of minutes. This technique has a faster recovery time and a much higher rate of success than other methods. Everyone is a candidate for dental implants, but getting the procedure done properly does require an implant specialist. Dr. Cha is a Fellow and Diplomat of the International Board of Oral Implantologists; one of three dentists in Las Vegas to be awarded this honor. She is also a published author in numerous scientific journals and an international lecturer on dental implants and periodontics.

Infinity Dental Family Dentistry recently acquired a CT Scanner enabling them to take 3D images of patients in the office. Previously (and at most practices) patients had to be referred out to an imaging center and/or specialists. CT scans can now be performed in the comfort and privacy of the practice. This machine enables the doctor to view and measure bone, view its density and take other measurements necessary for implant placement planning. In addition these scans enable the doctor to diagnose many problematic conditions which are often not evident in intra-oral radiographs. Dr. Sanchez is thrilled to be able to offer another service to his patients and stay ahead of the curve with the newest technologies and procedures available. This machine is another tool in providing his patients with the best care possible and he considers himself blessed to be able to treat every patient with the most current of options. Dr. Michael S. Mall is excited to be focusing on age management and optimization of health as well as continuing other areas of his practice. “I want to move patients from managing a disease model to a model of maintaining good health,” he explained. The doctor and his staff are very passionate about the concierge primary care medical practice and cosmetic New Image Advanced Laser Skin Center. People respond to his ability to treat the entire person with his special gift to be empathetic and compassionate and a sense of objectivity to evaluate them. As part of Dr. Mall’s commitment, new procedures and techniques are researched and incorporated into the practice. “When I first started, patients came to me because they were sick and had medical problems. In the last five years, people joining the practice want to become healthier, lose weight, get off medications and consider using hormone replacement,” Dr. Mall stated. One cutting-edge procedure the doctor has incorporated is umbilical stem cell therapy. It is an effective complementary tool for treating autoimmune disorders including autoimmune arthritis. According to Dr. Mall, using stem cells has been taken to a whole new level for other uses. Dr. Mall is so confident in the procedure; he has used it on himself, his mother and uncle. Dr. Mall had both hips replaced last year and his mother had her hips and knees replaced. When Dr. Mall realized his knees and
shoulders were becoming boneon-bone, he used stem cell therapy and is feeling awesome after a four month period. “It is truly the treatment to use for age management.” Stem cells are, as Dr. Mall explained, zero years old. Anyone can use a stem cell (no matching is required), there is no down time and it is a FDA-approved product. While there are no guarantees, there are over 200,000 studies on stem cells and 20,000 studies on umbilical stem cells. Another area Dr. Mall is focusing on is vaginal and pelvic health. “We should not be embarrassed to discuss this, especially with new procedures. As women age, they can experience vaginal dryness, urinary leakage, less flexibility and rectal infections. It is not discussed except to prescribe medication,” he said. Aging also affects sexual intimacy, which is very important to marriages and general health. Vaginal rejuvenation lasers can treat and improve vaginal health without surgery. O-Shots can also treat the clitoris and G-Spot to increase a woman’s orgasm. Dr. Mall takes the practice of women’s health very seriously and wants his patients to be comfortable discussing their concerns while treating them. Dr. Mall and his staff really care about patients who are part of his concierge primary care medical practice or clients who come to New Image. Good health care is an important asset as well as being an important part in a person’s quality of life. Dr. Mall is proud to be at the forefront of this medical trend and make a difference in people’s lives.

NEW VISTA MEMBERS PUNCH THEIR WAY TO HEALTHY HABITS By Mike Coblentz
N
ew Vista members show off their desire and abilities to stay active and healthy through New Vista’s brand new fitness program, VistaFit. Like New Vista’s many other programs, the emphasis is on empowerment. VistaFit has started with a focus on boxing and is geared to give individuals of the intellectual and developmental disability community more opportunity for health, wellness and active living. This implements additional aspects of everyday positive living and helps knockout any future health complications that may arise from more sedentary lifestyles.
The program started in partnership with legendary Hall of Fame boxing referee Richard Steele. Much of VistaFit was inspired by Richard Steele’s Rock Steady Boxing, one of his many programs, with this one setting the goal of improving mobility in Parkinson’s patients. Similarities were drawn between the mobility concerns in Parkinson’s patients and those of the IDD community. “It really has enlightened my whole program and has given me a fresh breath of air to breathe,” said Steele. The boxing concentrates on focus, balance and intensity. It’s a major aspect to the program but also just a start for VistaFit, with more classes being added and plans to implement several more.
New Vista member and ambassador, appropriately though coincidentally nicknamed Rocky, recognized VistaFit’s understanding and importance of not just training the body, but also the mind and spirit. “The goal of the program is about staying fit, being in shape … it’s the training,” Rocky said. “It’s showing people how to be strong minded, not let others wear you down.”
NFL alum Victor Cohen and his workout program are the latest addition to VistaFit. Cohen gives back to his community through his Victor B. Cohen Foundation, which has tackled such goals as stopping childhood obesity and giving back to the veterans. The program promises to challenge its members with a grueling regimen tailored for any skill level.
W o m a n M a g a z i n e .V e g a s » 6 7 » FA L L 2 0 1 7
There are still many more programs on the horizon for VistaFit with yoga, dance, swimming and nutrition elements as possible next additions. The ultimate goal is to have two weeks’ worth of daily classes and programs that then repeat on a bi-weekly basis, with a variety to keep the program feeling fresh while encouraging regular attendance. The criteria for any of the VistaFit classes remain the same across the board. It inspires regular activity, addresses mobility, can also be implemented outside of the program and most importantly, it’s fun. The combination is one that New Vista hopes will be a recipe to sustain healthy living habits in all its members that get involved and will continue to attract more of the community. There’s also no aspect that is necessarily specific to the IDD community and it’s all about inclusion. VistaFit and New Vista is a nonprofit organization offering ways to help out in the IDD community. Visit newvistanv.org to get involved.

Moore admits she does a little bit of everything including checking orders for accuracy, sales, managing the casino party division, payroll, bookkeeping and anything else that needs to be done. According to Moore, the casino party division can be the most fun. “We set up tables and provide dealers so the guests can let loose as if they were in an actual casino. It isn’t real money though so everyone is relaxed and having a good time.” One of the signature events that Moore really enjoys is when Las Vegas Party Rentals provides casino tables and dealers for a camp in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. s Jaguar’s first foray into the crowded crossover/SUV market, one might think that there simply can’t be anything new and different. Then Jaguar introduced the all-new Jaguar F-Pace, the first Jaguar luxury performance SUV that brings together sporty handling and dramatic beauty with everyday practicality and efficiency. No other SUV in its class quite looks or even feels like it. Most SUVs that are all-wheel-drive, such as this one, typically favor the front wheels for a typical road feel, but due to Jaguar’s rich racing history, it favors the rear wheels, right on par with a race car feel. This makes for a more breathtaking sports car-like ride around curves. The F-Pace is a performance SUV that combines the Jaguar DNA of legendary performance, handling and luxury with practicality and space. With the performance capability for every road and the capacity for every day, the F-PACE is a Jaguar vehicle for everyone including families. The Jaguar F-Pace is truly the best of both worlds. Jaguar features comfort, confidence and safety. Come test drive one at Jaguar Land Rover Las Vegas located at 5255 W. Sahara Ave. For more information, visit JLRLV.com.

GIVE OVER TAKE: Building Better Business Relationships
C
reating a sense of trust with clients, colleagues, business acquaintances and mentors (or mentees) is essential to your brand (personal and professional). Instilling trustworthiness takes time, dedication and concerted effort, but pays in dividends in likelihood of referrals, company culture, employee tenure and general reputation in (and out of ) your network. One of the most effective ways to instill trustworthiness is by incorporating a culture of giving within yourself and your company. Here are a few suggestions to get you started: ALIGN YOUR ORGANIZATION – OR YOURSELF – WITH A FEW SOLID NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS Whether you offer pro-bono work from your company, serve on a board, give funds or simply have an employee day at a local nonprofit, giving you or your team time to give back to the community and to worthy causes amplifies your commitment to making our community a better place. Employee engagement for a few hours at a food pantry or helping to beautify a local park helps build camaraderie around your staff as well. Be sure to include your team in the decision-making process and do your homework in regards to the organizations you choose: they should reflect your mission and values, and be a reputable, responsible organization. Don’t be afraid to share your company’s nonprofit affiliations on your social media channels or in your client newsletters either.
REFER It may sound trite, but the best gift you can give another professional is a good word. In fact, according to a recent McKinsey & Company study, word of mouth is the primary factor behind 20 to 50 percent of all purchasing decisions. Peer review is more important than ever, and people are more likely to try brands and companies based on others’ recommendations (think of how much you rely on platforms like Google reviews, Yelp and TripAdvisor). Referring business to others is a sign that you trust them with your name and good reputation, and that the company you’re referring is also trustworthy.
GIVE MEANINGFULLY When you send a congratulatory basket to a client who just won a major industry award or a thank-you to a member of your network that referred you to your latest account, giving a random bouquet of flowers or a generic gift may be an easy way to go (and certainly better than nothing at all), but taking the time to select a thank-you or congratulatory gift that reflects that person’s interests, likes and nonprofit work shows that your effort was thoughtful and personalized. At the very least, consider that the gift should be about your recipient, not your company. In other words, this isn’t the time to hand them a branded promotional piece with a thank you note on company stationery. Be respectful and show how much you appreciate their gesture to you—and reciprocate.

NETWORK WITHOUT THE “ALL ABOUT ME” MENTALITY When you attend a networking function, asking the right questions of new contacts is key to establishing yourself as a memorable potential service provider. Ask questions of the client’s needs, issues your products or services can address and how you differentiate yourself from the competition. Be sure to follow up using a specific tidbit from your conversation to jog their memory. Giving your prospect or new contact the “mic,” whether literally or figuratively, can give them an outlet to explain how you can be of assistance to them.

A GOOD READ ABOUT LAS VEGAS More than the Strip and the Mob By Debbie Hall
W
hile Las Vegas has a colorful past, it is also a vibrant city with inspiring, fascinating and intriguing stories. Whether mesmerized by a thriller, inspired by a real life story or checking off that bucket list, these three books are certain to entertain.
100 THINGS TO DO IN LAS VEGAS BEFORE YOU DIE BY LAURA CARROLL AND ADAM KEALOHA CAUSEY
VEGAS GIRLS BY HEATHER SKYLER Many might consider Las Vegas a transient town, but Vegas Girls explores the lives of three women who grew up in Sin City. Native Las Vegan Heather Skyler creates through fiction three high school friends who reunite in their 30s. The novel spans a week in their lives as all three face life altering decisions. Each chapter engages from the viewpoint of each character as well as an ex-boyfriend of one and a new man in the life of another. Their lives intertwine as one searches for a son she gave up for adoption, one contemplates leaving her husband and one must come to terms with the mother who abandoned her. In the mix is the desert, casinos, memories and the new places of Southern Nevada along with unrequited love and longing. It is almost a coming of age story of how the past affects the present. While none of the characters ever expected to come back home, they discover that for better or worse, Las Vegas will always be their home.
Native Las Vegan and journalist Laura Carroll and transplanted journalist Adam Kealoha share a true insider’s guide to the ultimate experience of Las Vegas. The guide showcases the popular sights, hidden gems and even a little of the bizarre in the neon landscape of Sin City. The spectacle of millions of lights and replicas of a pyramid, castles, cities and countries on the Las Vegas Strip are part of the exploration. But there is so much more to do in Southern Nevada. There are free attractions, romance in the air or a brush with celebrity. Considered one of the dining capitals in the world, find hip new restaurants, cheap eats or cuisines from around the country and the world.
“Marriage Can Be Murder” co-creator and star Jayne Post has co-authored this riveting story based on the real-life accidental death of her 16-year-old son, Paul P. San Agustin. While riding his bike near his home in Henderson in 2003, he was hit by another 16-year-old driver and died due to the accident. The death of a child is a mother’s worst nightmare and this book offers two parallel endings—one of forgiveness and grace and one of resentment and anger.
For outdoor enthusiasts, there is a variety of activities including hiking in Red Rock Canyon, exploring the Mojave Desert and learning about fossils. There is snow at Lee Canyon and Mt. Charleston in the winter and swimming in Lake Mead or resort pools in the other seasons. Culture includes museums, art galleries and festivals. Two ghost towns are in driving distance as well as history including the mob, natural history, atomic testing and one of the first forts built in the state.
Post writes from the heart. While many might recognize her as the ditzy blond performing in “Marriage Can Be Murder” at the D Las Vegas, she is also a minister at Sin City Church as well as one of the producers of her show. She is willing to expose herself with her own failings, self-blame and crisis of faith. It is a powerful story showing that all who were involved are human beings with flaws. The real ending shows how after the tragedy, the family and even the teenage driver now continues to live with love and hope.

NO FUTURE WITHOUT BY KAYLA GILMORE AND JAYNE POST
l l a f t ’ n o D p a r T e h t r fo By Rev. Thabiti
I
f what everyone is being told in mainstream media and social media is true, then it must be safe to conclude that at least 50 percent of the population is miserable. Why are people miserable? It is because The Truth (that is always revealing itself ) is not what they want the truth to be. This outcome of feeling miserable is because many fail to realize that The Truth does not exist to conform to us, we are here to conform to it. It does not matter what we want or how we feel about it. It does not seek nor does it need our approval or permission to be what is and to operate as it does. The Absolute Truth is Misery Loves Company. Misery never wants to suffer alone. This means that the objective of those who are miserable is to make others miserable too. Don’t fall for this trap!
We cannot control everything but we can control our response to anything. How we respond to the things that happen in life reveals the truth about us. It exposes our level of spiritual maturity. Always remember, the baby always cries, kicks and screams when they don’t get their way. Another way to explain our relationship to Life is that we are the children of Mother Nature. Whenever a baby gets dirty, the mother will put the baby in the tub and wash the baby. Now the baby may object but the mother with the highest degree of love continues to wash the baby anyway. She knows the baby does not understand the potential harm of germs and bacteria and being washed is good for the baby.
This is what is happening whenever we see people crying, kicking and screaming. This means that Mother Nature has them in the bathtub and knowing all along that the baby is not smart enough to understand that Life does not go anybody’s way. Life goes its own way and we must make our way that of the way of Life. Being at odds with what IS causes stress. Agony happens when we are trying to squeeze the vastness of life into our limited and narrow perception of what it is. The ultimate lesson leading to the most precious wisdom in life is when we finally learn to love what we get, then and only then. will we always get what we love. HAPPY BLESSINGS
Notice the way of the world, then rise above it. You have no time to get sucked into the toxic vortex that miserable people are drowning in. Think of time as money and you have none to waste. Our life itself is not only our greatest teacher but is also an innocent mirror reflecting our attitude, perception and belief. This is why ANYONE with a bad attitude is GUARANTEED to be miserable.

Even adult work schedules shift into a slower paced rhythm—fewer deadlines and meandering lunches sprinkled liberally with long weekends and vacation days. There are hikes, picnics, barbecues and pool parties. There is sleeping in, afternoon naps and days without alarm clocks. If a dog (or dogs) is part of the family, they have enjoyed being part of “the dog days of summer.” Then, it’s all over. The days grow shorter. There’s a steady stream of television commercials touting back-toschool sales mixed with pre-season promos for football. It changes from sunshine yellow and frolicking in pools to earth-toned hues and falling leaves. People know it’s coming. Dogs don’t understand why activities have changed.
Humans understand the concept that summer is for fun and when fall comes around, it’s time to get back on track and get things done. It may be done grudgingly, but people adjust from summertime activities back to the grind of school and work when the season comes around. Dogs do not understand. All they know is that days filled with more time with their humans have come to a screeching halt. Now they’re left on their own with no one to play with them during the day and the flow of rich stimulation cut off. Some dogs, frustrated by the change and lacking appropriate outlets for their energy, may become disruptive. This can manifest in something as simple as excessive barking or whining when left alone, or it can range up the scale to destructive behaviors like emptying trashcans, marking in the house or worse. It is not uncommon for dogs to begin acting out when there are tectonic shifts in a household such as moves, renovations and houseguests. People generally understand that major life changes can be disruptive to pets, and can plan for it. When it comes to changes from season to season, such considerations rarely get made.
Here are a few tips to help alleviate a dog’s stress and avoid bad behaviors. Set a schedule and keep it
Be patient
Continue the dog’s social setting
The fall season can be a wonderful time and, with consideration, dogs can continue to thrive with their families.
Whether it’s school year or summertime, dogs need consistent schedules. Maintaining a basic schedule year-round for feeding and basic walks—a schedule that is kept regardless of vacations or human schedule changes—can go a long way to helping a dog maintain balanced behavior year-round. Regardless of a dog’s age, mental stimulation is a critical factor for a dog to be behaviorally stable. Some dogs are suited well with individual dog walkers. Other dogs thrive in settings where they are grouped by size/breed. While many can get along with in a mixed setting with all sorts of dogs, it’s not uncommon during the school year to have a dog in daycare. Don’t pull the plug during summer months. Cut back on hours/days but keep some consistency.

If your dog starts acting out, remember that it is not their fault. Think of your dog like a toddler whose world has been turned upside down. What does that child do? Act out. If your dog appears to be regressing in its training, take a good look at what is happening and take the necessary steps.
