ith the holidays and New Year approaching, it’s a time when many of us choose to pause and reflect on our accomplishments throughout the year. This includes what we have to be grateful for, the lessons we’ve learned along the way and a time to set new goals for the coming year. This holiday season may be more challenging for our community and all of those personally affected due to the tragedy that took place on One October. It may be a time for some that won’t want to look back and yet have a very difficult time looking forward. I encourage you to lend a helping hand and show kindness with compassion, as you never know what someone could be going through. Some people are brave and vulnerable enough to express their hurts in order for us to know what to do to offer comfort. Yet others are silent about their pain and we need to just be there for them, providing that extra sense of security as they heal. When we think of Las Vegas, we think of it being the entertainment capital of the world. You don’t think of it as a place where tragedy strikes. However, when it did, Mayor Carolyn Goodman, as well as emergency personnel did what needed to be done. They were so quick to put their training into action. They are the real heroes, along with the many others who stepped up to offer assistance to those needing immediate attention. This city proved it is #VegasStrong. A special thank you is extended to our law enforcement, first responders and medical personnel. This issue of Las Vegas Woman magazine will help as you examine where you are at the present time, as well as offer tips on setting realistic goals for 2018. Thank you for allowing us to educate, entertain and inspire you… one issue at a time. Gratefully,

he holidays are here and then it will be a New Year. Las Vegas Woman magazine continues to educate, entertain and inspire with new ideas. Our cover story, Betty Ann Golden, is such an inspiration. When I was interviewing her, I was just amazed. Betty Ann is remarkable as a business savvy woman with a big heart. She loves life and demonstrates an example I personally want to follow. Read her story on Page 52 to embrace this dynamic woman.
With a Happy New You, personal transformation can be achieved for 2018. Lynsey K. Freeman gives great advices on Page 25 as well as Tonya Twitchell on Page 64. Dr. Tiger Devore explores the dynamics of men in power and how women should handle this situation on Page 51. For a fashion and beauty makeover, check out Trending on Page 40, Trendsetters on Page 43, Eccoci on Page 39 and Nordic Beach on Page 47. All are guaranteed to give great ideas to ramp up one’s personal appearance. For those in business, digital marketing (Page 89) and video marketing (Page 75) are two big trends to implement. We appreciate our volunteers including New Vista (Page 67) and Why Ranch (Page 18). This season is a joyous time and our holiday calendar of events on Page 14 lists some of the fun events happening. Shopping? The gift guide on Page 34 is certain to give some great ideas on buying that special gift. Entertaining? Our wines and dines starting on Page 28 offers fun recipes and great restaurants. Want to see a show? Two amazing women break barriers in a circus on Page 17 and Mat Franco continues to entertain Las Vegas audiences on Page 96. WOMEN OF THE CIRCUS COME TO LAS VEGAS Death defying performances in ‘Circus 1903’ and ‘WOW – WORLD OF WONDER’ By Debbie Hall Photos of Maria Jose Dominguez by Ethan Miller Photos of Silvia Silvia courtesy of “WOW – World of Wonder”
A
t the turn of the 20th century, people in small town America anticipated the circus coming to town. In the 21st century, generations of circus performers continue to entertain including these two amazing women showcasing their extraordinary talents in Las Vegas. “Circus 1903” takes audiences on a magical journey back to the year 1903, featuring an amazing cast of contortionists, acrobats, jugglers, high-wire acts and death-defying feats. In the show, high wire walker Maria Jose Dominguez is a fifth generation circus performer as well as the mother of three. Originally from
Chile, Dominguez has traveled the world as a circus performer exemplifying the balance of strength and beauty both on and off the stage. As for performing high in the air on a wire, “When you’re a circus performer, you already kind of know what feeling you want to feel. In my case, I love adrenaline. I love dangerous things. I know it sounds crazy but that is my personality,” she explained. “To be on the wire for me is more than just performing, for me it’s my passion. I was born to do this! Before the music starts and the lights go up, it’s a lot of focusing, but once the act begins and we feel the lights on our faces—something magical happens. I feel like I’m on a cloud and I know this is my life. I want to perform really high in the air.” “WOW – WORLD OF WONDER,” the internationally acclaimed production, made a splash and transported audiences into a world of water, wonder and fantasy during its Las Vegas debut at the Rio Showroom at Rio AllSuite Hotel & Casino. Featuring 30 performers from 10 different countries around the world, archer Silvia Silvia, a semifinalist in Season 10 on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent,” risks her life nightly in the show. As well as a third generation circus performer, she is the wife of “WOW” cast member Victor Ponce. The two competed against their son, Paul Ponce, and the judges send her to the quarterfinals instead of her son. However, she was forced to withdraw from the competition due to contractual obligations to perform elsewhere. Born and raised in Columbia, Silvia has lived in Spain for over 40 years traveling and performing all over the world. In the 1980s, she performed in Las Vegas and is thrilled to be back in the new show. As for her skill and tricks with archery including the cross bow, “as children of a circus family, we trained on the high wire as well as the trapeze. But I discovered I had a really special talent with the bow and arrow and I focused on that.

WHY Ranch Demonstrates the Power of Horses and Healing M
any would agree that children face enormous challenges growing to adulthood. Amy Meyer-Terry faced her own obstacles and, realizing the great need, founded White Horse Youth Ranch known as WHY Ranch in 2007. The fully functioning ranch and equestrian program helps children, teenagers, families and military personnel. WHY Ranch builds confidence, encourages integrity and inspires creativity. It offers a safe place for kids to come and experience personal healing and growth while building a loving and connected relationship with their horse.
By Debbie Hall a child or teen has been in the program, they do get the opportunity to ride the horse. $1Korral is a yearly or monthly sponsorship to help with the cost of the horses and ranch as well as grow the programs. Volunteering opportunities are available to those who are passionate about horses while getting their hands dirty. WHY Ranch is looking for those who want to share the joy of loving and caring for horses and kids, work alongside staff members and experience changing lives. The Junior Leadership volunteer program is for teens ages 10 to 14 who are not part of the program but
Kids and teens can experience a difficult time going through adverse situations. Many are bullied, face various forms of abuse or deal with a death, divorce or many other situations that causes withdrawal and strained family relationships. Diamonds in the Rough is designed as an after-school program where kids attend for 30 minutes to a couple of hours. Participants get to work with horses in natural horsemanship and groundwork. It is not a riding program, but after
volunteer and learn through their service. WHY Ranch also works with military families, especially those experiencing PTSD. MeyerTerry’s husband served in Afghanistan and suffers from PTSD. He works at the ranch which is integral to healing himself and helping others. “We want to rebuild lives working together on the ranch,” Meyer-Terry said. “Horses are great because they don’t judge, just love,” she said. “They only perceive how a person approaches and pets, grooms, hugs or talks to them. They are instinctive animals that can help heal broken hearts and minds with just their beautiful spirits and tranquility. Positive experience with a horse provides each youth with life-changing tools that can transfer to all aspects of his or her life. What I hear from people who come to the ranch is that their child can finally open up.” The beautiful functioning ranch, complete with gentle horses and trained staff, continues to help kids become their best selves. KAREN WHEELER: Finding her voice again through painting By Debbie Hall
I
Art group. “I wanted to be around fellow creative people. It is a small group but I needed something to get me out of the house.”
t would be natural to tell Karen Wheeler’s story and art career at the beginning of her life. However, her real epiphany began in 2016 when she discovered her true passion in creating art even though she has been an artist for most of her life. To detail Wheeler’s timeline; she was born with a form of muscular dystrophy known as spinal muscular atrophy 1. Since Wheeler could not play like other children, her mother gave her paper and pencils and told her to draw. She would be mainstreamed into high school, encouraged to attend college to study art and ultimately obtained her master’s degree with a 4.0 grade average. Wheeler painted in watercolors with great success and accolades. She served on the board of directors of VSA Arts California; a nonprofit organization dedicated to integrating mentally and physically challenged adults and children into society through the arts. Wheeler sold her work to collectors all over the world and celebrities including Julian Lennon, Phil Collins, Shadoe Stevens, Justin Hayward, [late] Joan Rivers, Damon Wayans and Steven Seagal.
Time passed and in November 2016, the group was exhibiting never-before-seen artwork with Wheeler’s brother performing. She wanted to surprise him with a painting of his dog. However, she had suffered a mini stroke earlier in the year. Still Wheeler was determined to try.
Since most of her subjects revolved around animals, her brother tried to commission her to paint a portrait of his dog in 2013 and even agreed to pay her. Wheeler attempted to paint this one project but finally gave up. But art kept calling her name so Wheeler literally forced herself to start the Spirit of
“I experienced joy again as I started. It took me four paintings, but I completed it,” she explained. She discovered that she hadn’t lost her skill even with the numbness in her fingers and unable to hold the brush very well. But thanks to her friend, who developed a device for her, Wheeler has created four more pieces in less than a year’s time. “This is the first time that I really valued my art,” she stated. “Before I painted because I knew I could do it but I realized that my heart was not really in it. But now looming in my life is the possibility I can’t paint anymore. I am willing and ready to keep doing what I know best. This is the one thing I don’t need help,” she stated.
But when David, the man who took care of Wheeler for 30 years, passed away in 2013, time stopped for her. “I quit painting for three years. I lost all interest and I was no longer inspired,” she explained. Wheeler became a recluse, her health deteriorated and lost many of her friends. “I felt my life ended when he was gone.”
Spirit of Art continues to thrive and exhibit as Wheeler expresses joy and inspiration with beautiful art pieces. For more information, visit karenwheeler.com.

IT’S A NEW YEAR
TIME TO CREATE A NEW YOU FINANCIALLY BY LYNSEY K. FREEMAN
D
id you make resolutions around your personal finances last year? Did you reach those goals? Make this the year you review your finances and then look for ways to improve in 2018. As you plan for the New Year, make your resolutions SMART, the acronym for specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely goals. SMART goals address the three “W” questions of what, why and who. Let’s say, for instance, your goal is to save more money. That’s a great start, but too vague. First ask “What?” What exactly is it that you want to accomplish? Do you want to save enough money to retire at age 65? Do you want to save enough for a 20 percent down payment on a new home? Be as precise as possible. Second ask “Why?” Why do you want to achieve this goal? What is the reason you want to save more money? It’s important to tie financial goals to relevance in your life. If
a goal isn’t in line with what you truly want, you’re going to have a difficult time finding success with it.
figure out ways to make them come true. You will gain the attitude, mindset and financial capacity to achieve them.
Then ask “Who?” Who else is involved in your goal? Who do you need to work with to make it happen? Accountability is key. Work with a financial advisor and share your goals with friends and family.
Realistic: Most people would love the idea of retiring early or going on a lavish vacation. However, setting goals around these things must be realistic. It might be achievable to save $30,000 for a vacation this year, but is it realistic if you’re married with three young children? Probably not.
As for SMART: Specific: The goal needs to be clear and unambiguous. “I’ll save money by only going to Starbucks twice a week” is more specific than “I won’t go to Starbucks as much.” Measurable: “I will save 10 percent of each paycheck” is measurable while “I will save some money out of each paycheck” is not. Achievable: An attainable goal is not extreme. The resolution is neither out of reach nor too low that it becomes meaningless. If resolutions are important to you, you will

Timely: A commitment to a deadline is vital for success. “I will start saving 10 percent of my paychecks starting Jan. 1” is a more definite time frame than “I will start saving more money after the holidays.” Reflect on your goals before you sign-off on them. Prepare for the New Year with organization, forethought and accountability. Cheers to the New Year and financially A New You.
Women’s Leadership Council Helps TWO FUTURE LEADERS FULFILL THEIR DREAMS
asmine Avagyan and Lin Martinez have ambitious goals for their futures. Both students at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Avagyan is studying to be a pediatrician and Martinez plans to become a lawyer. Thanks to the United Way of Southern Nevada’s Women’s Leadership Council, they are starting on the path to creating a better life and a better community through education.
shared Martinez. “The next step would be to study and take the LSAT test, in order to apply for law school, where I would spend three years to receive the training and education needed to become a lawyer.” Avagyan’s path to being a doctor is similar, with a bachelor’s degree, medical school and years of training coming before entering her chosen field.
According to a UWSN report on postsecondary attainment, 54 percent of jobs in Nevada require some form of postsecondary education, but only 31 percent of residents qualify. (Read the full report at uwsn.org/communityconnect.) Programs like the Women’s Leadership Council Emerging Leadership Scholarship, which both Avagyan and Martinez have received, are helping to change that and providing ways for Southern Nevadans to gain a degree or certification to prepare for the workforce.
Both women consider the years of schooling worth it to help their community. Avagyan was diagnosed with severe scoliosis at 11 years old, and was told her lungs would collapse by the age of 30. At 13, she underwent surgery to save her life, which changed the way she sees the world. Now, she’s studying to become a doctor so she can help others who suffer from the same condition and create a healthy environment in Southern Nevada. “My community has given so much to me and I want to continue on my journey to give back, as well as continue to make my community grow,” she said.
“The first step to work towards becoming a lawyer is receiving a bachelor’s degree,”
As an intern at the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada, Martinez has seen first

hand how the law affects families across Southern Nevada. “The law can dictate what happens to children, families, individuals and entire communities,” Martinez stated. “I have been a witness to the fear and uncertainty that people have when they aren’t aware of how they can protect themselves from certain situations.” With a pressing need for bilingual lawyers to reach all of Southern Nevada’s residents, Martinez looks forward to using her degree to help people protect themselves and find resources for assistance. “The Southern Nevada community has given me so much and I intend to give back through my determination, passion, and time.” To learn more about the Emerging Leadership Scholarship for Women and the Women’s Leadership Council, contact Lawrel Larsen at 702.892.2319 or LawrelL@uwsn.org.

Raise A Glass Winter Wines with these
I
t is time to celebrate the holidays with friends and family and toast to the New Year. Bold flavors enhance this time of year with spiced pears, baked apples, ripe blackberries and rich tannins. Embrace the warm aromas enjoying a glass during wintertime of mild daytime temperatures and chilly nights.
J Vineyards Russian River Chardonnay While winter is typically the season for hearty red wines, there are plenty of full-bodied whites that are well suited for this time of year. J Vineyards Russian River Chardonnay is rich and fragrant with aromas of spiced pear and baked apple. The palate reveals a creamy texture with pronounced flavors of ripe pear, Meyer lemon and caramelized peaches. Bright acidity and hints of toasted oak persist on the elegant finish. Delicious when paired with crab cakes, lobster bisque, roast chicken with mushrooms and truffle mac and cheese.
Dark Horse Double Down Red Blend
This limited release from Dark Horse will certainly take the chill out of those cold winter nights. Chewy tannins and hints of mocha enhance concentrated flavors of ripe blackberry and warm brown spice. This dark and decadent blend has a rich mid palate with balanced acidity and a bold finish. Pair with comfort foods like meatloaf and mashed potatoes, grilled cheese and tomato soup or spaghetti and meatballs.
Cheers! Kenny Lee
Louis M. Martini Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Bear Flag Zinfandel
Bear Flag Zinfandel reflects the bold, enduring spirit of California. The wine is rich and full-bodied with a spicy character followed by jammy notes of blueberry pie, vanilla and toasted oak. Firm structure and tannins are balanced with a velvety taste and lingering finish. Pair with steak fajitas, barbecued chicken or spareribs, sausage and peppers or roast pork.
Sponsored by Lee’s Discount Liquor, with 17 locations in Southern Nevada (including one in Mesquite). For locations, hours and more information, visit leesliquorlv.com.
Nothing chases away the winter blues like a big, bold, bottle of cab. One of the favorites is the Alexander Valley Cabernet from Louis M. Martini. This cab has it all including intense aromas and flavors of dark berry fruit, earthy notes of truffle and cedar, balanced tannins and a long, complex finish. What winter blues?
Argiano Non Confunditur Non Confunditur is a Latin term that means unique or unmistakable. Argiano Non Confunditur is a robust Italian red that is a unique blend that is unmistakably delicious! Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Sangiovese create a versatile wine that is fullbodied and generous with complex layers and smooth tannins. Flavors of black currant, red berries and subtle earthy notes are followed by hints of coffee and cocoa powder. This wine may not be easy to pronounce, but it’s definitely easy to drink! Pair with sausage pizza, grilled meats, lasagna and hearty pasta dishes.

EXECUTIVE ROOM CHEF JAIMEE PEPE BRINGS SIZZLE TO TWIN CREEKS STEAKHOUSE Photo of Executive Room Chef Jaimee Pepe by Roger Bennett
T
win Creeks Steakhouse at the Silverton Casino Hotel is known for its innovative menu, signature boutique bourbons and an extensive wine list. Executive Room Chef Jaimee Pepe has recently joined the team bringing creativity and background to continue the extraordinary dining experience. A new Finest Menu has been introduced with twist to many of its dishes. One of the feature items is a classic chicken topped with a pan sauce along with biscuit stuffing and asparagus. Another choice is classic pork chops, brined in rosemary, and served with apple chutney and sweet potato mash. Originally from New Jersey, Chef Pepe always loved being in the kitchen and even took some cooking classes in high school. She received a certificate in culinary arts from a community college and planned to work in the hospitality industry in management. Moving to Southern Nevada to attend the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, she realized that she wanted to be a chef instead after attending for about a year. “I love being hands on,” she explained. “I had always been in the kitchen with my grandmother and mother. I have always had a love for food.”
There was a change in her career course and Chef Pepe obtained a degree in culinary arts from the Art Institute of Las Vegas. Hired at Nob Hill for Chef Michael Mina at the MGM Grand, Chef Pepe was exposed to fine dining on the Las Vegas Strip. She returned to New York City to continue her culinary career under Chef Dan Silverman at the Standard Grill. But the bright lights and dining scene in Las Vegas called her name and Chef Pepe moved back to Southern Nevada. She was the executive sous chef at Giada’s on the Las Vegas Strip before becoming the first female executive room chef at Twin Creeks. “There are a lot of moving parts so, when I first arrive, my assistant George is working on orders and production. I am very involved with hands, including prep. When we are open in the evening, I am overseeing everything to make certain the guests have the best dining experience possible.” Twin Creeks features an intimate dining experience including a lounge area, full bar and private dining room. Choices of steak include
filet mignon, porterhouse, New York and its specialty, Twin Creeks bone-in rib eye. Seafood options include salmon, halibut, diver scallops and twin tails. Other classic entrées along with appetizers, sides and dessert round out the menu. Prime rib is offered daily along with Prime Rib Sundays featuring a King or Queen Cut Prime Rib (either 16 or 12 ounces) with choice of soup or salad and a side. Happy Hour is 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday, which includes halfprice small plates, beer, wine and cocktails. For those wine lovers, Wednesday and Thursday feature half-off all bottles of wine.

THESE RESTAURATEURS DELIVER THE BEST IN DINING CRAFTkitchen and Salud Mexican Bistro and Tequileria By Debbie Hall

The dining experience is more than a menu; it is a combination of food, drink, atmosphere, price and location. Restaurateurs including Tami Blinn of CRAFTkitchen and Stevee Topchi of Salud Mexican Bistro and Tequileria are two of a growing number of women who are revolutionizing the industry.
his butcher shop. After college and culinary school, Tami pursued her culinary career and worked for the Ritz Carlton in San Francisco. It was during this period she met her future husband. When there was an opportunity in Las Vegas for the two of them, they decided to move and make Southern Nevada their home. Then they decided to take a leap of faith.

“It was always a dream of ours to open a restaurant to be able to do something more adventurous,” she explained. They specifically selected a location surrounded by neighborhoods. “We have regulars that come twice a week and they are not only our guests but also our neighbors.”

“There are many challenges in opening a restaurant. But I loved it when we were creating the menu,” she said. “We would have friends and family come and taste the food, get their opinions and that was so much fun. I have a special relationship with our chef, who is an artist with food as well as with sculpturing and painting.” Stevee strives to ensure everything looks and tastes perfect and is working on adding locations. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays, 4 to 10 p.m. Saturdays and 4 to 9 p.m. Sundays.
Along with the new American favorites with a twist, baked goodies made from scratch can also be purchased from the bakery case. Food is locally sourced whenever possible as well as organic and gluten-free choices. The menu changes constantly with beer and wine available to order. CRAFTkitchen is open daily for breakfast and lunch only. These hours were selected for family time. Chef Jaret can coach his son in various sports and Tami can spend time with her daughter with school activities. Born and raised in Henderson, Stevee, along with her husband Andres, owns Salud Mexican Bistro and Tequileria. The menu is classical Mexican cuisine with a modern twist such as duck carnitas and pork belly chicharron. For adventurous diners, different tastes are incorporated such as lobster enchiladas and octopus salteado. There is a full bar featuring tequila cocktails and flights. Stevee first obtained her cosmetology license because she loves to make women feel beautiful. She now owns a mobile hair and makeup service for brides as well as continues to work as a stylist.

Retro-inspired frames ACCENTUATE BEAUTIFUL EYES WHILE LOOKING FORWARD Photography by Garrett Winslow
I
n the 1960s, cat-eye frames were the rage. In the 1970s, cool people wore aviator shapes. Continuing into the 1980s, big and bold frames made a fashion statement. Dior created the round gold metal frame and large square sunglass acetate style in the 1990s. Today, it is all about retro-inspired frames for the new eyewear collections including Dior, Tom Ford and Clubmaster. The new trend of metal-on-metal designs incorporates different colors and a mix of shapes in one design with a focus on gold. Mirror lenses and lightly tinted lenses give that aura of mystery. Women’s HEALTH
FAQS
By Dr. Michael Mall
M
ichael S. Mall, M.D. is the medical director of Michael S. Mall, MD | Medical Concierge and New Image Advanced Laser Skin Center. Dr. Mall answers some common questions about health, but encourages those with concerns to seek professional help.
Q. I have been checked out and am healthy, but what can I do to feel good and take care of myself?
Q. I have lost weight, but I still have problem areas that don’t respond to exercise. I am especially distressed about my back flab and rolls. What can I do that doesn’t require surgery?
Optimizing your health to feel your best requires a physician that can spend time with you to really get to know you, properly test your nutritional health and hormonal health, and provide a comprehensive plan to optimize your health. This includes age management protocols, medicines if needed, vitamins, age management supplements and optimal hormone replacement if needed. A concierge medical physician is a great place to start but be sure that they focus on age management and hormone replacement versus a traditional medical model practice. An hour executive annual physical is a key component to optimizing your health and feeling the best that you can.
A. There are several non-surgical options for getting rid of stubborn fat that will not go away with proper eating and exercise, assuming no undiagnosed medical disease. There are lasers utilizing radio frequency heat to melt the fat away such as Cutera’s Trusculpt laser. This treatment also tightens the skin as well as melting the fat permanently. Mesotherapy, a well-known and proven treatment in Europe, uses injection of an enzyme combined with a local anesthetic into the upper layer of fat or cellulite to actually dissolve the fat cells permanently. Mesotherapy could be combined with Trusculpt to accelerate and overall improve the results.
A. This is a great question, as being checked out and deemed healthy does not necessarily make one feel good.
Q. I am getting older, but I don’t want a facelift. Still, I want to look as good as I can. What can I do to maintain my looks? W o m a n m a g a z i n e .V e g a s » 4 9 » W I N T E R 2 0 1 7 - 2 0 1 8
A. Everyone gets older, but we certainly do not have to get a facelift to look younger and refreshed. The skin loses collagen density as one ages making the appearance of loose, sagging skin with some wrinkles. Fillers such as Voluma, Vollure, and Juvederm can help replace the fat loss volume of aging to help look younger and refreshed. Botox, a proven entity with very little side effects if properly placed, can do wonders in relaxing muscles and making many fine lines and wrinkles disappear. Resurfacing lasers with minimal recovery time such as the accupulse micro fractionated CO2 laser with Deep FX and Total FX treatments can be used to tighten the skin and remove age spots, wrinkles and fine lines at the same time. Michael S. Mall, MD | Medical Concierge and New Image Advanced Laser Skin Center offers a new approach to health care, especially for women and their unique needs. WHEN WOMEN DEAL WITH MEN IN POWER By Dr. Tiger Devore
W
omen are lining up again to tell their story of another well-known, powerful man sexually harassing or assaulting them in a work environment. This usually has continued for decades as another man is exposed taking advantage of women in his position of power. Many women find out that the man they’d been getting to know professionally or personally intended to make them his next victim. These famous and powerful men wield great power and influence. They can change the life of anyone by giving them access to a kind of success that might otherwise be hard to achieve. Too often, the man in power finds that people will allow them to be abusive and even go along with the inappropriate relationship for the benefits it brings to the person. These men, because of their level of accomplishment, feel entitled to live outside the rules. They believe that showing respect for others doesn’t apply to them and that they can expect others to treat them with an eagerness to serve for
what can be given in exchange. Their success can also isolate them so that the women they encounter may represent an important, even rare, opportunity for intimate connection. Many of these men may take advantage since they crave the attention of others that seems out of reach. There may be a kind of desperation that these men feel regarding contact with women. Often the men who stand accused of these assaults have a ritual they follow again and again and that the women they victimize report a haunting consistency of their behavior. Cases played out in the media get the attention, but most women can recall a time when a man who had some power, whether a boss, supervisor, teacher, professor or someone in management, imposed their sexual needs onto the relationship. Women in these situations are usually confused, angered and frightened when this happens. They clearly felt that sexuality should have nothing to do
with the relationship. Women will make weak objections often because they don’t want to harm or destroy the relationship, but they just don’t want sex to be a part of it. This encourages these men. I work with women helping them to become prepared in advance, to feel confident that they know what to say and how to say it to avoid any misconception. I teach women to make it very clear about boundaries and refusal for the relationship to be anything but professional, respectful and cooperative. Direction and limitation of the interaction must be done firmly. Women must understand that they will NOT be able to control the interaction after the boundary has been pushed beyond the appropriate limit. The worst mistake women can make is to tell themselves that they can deal with it and that they will be okay. Clarity is the key. This is a new time in our society and all of us can change the outcome now. Gone is the “old boy’s network” or “men will be men.” Real men and women can interact in a professional manner for the success of all.

Creating relationships has always been their focus in life. This is who she is and how she built an amazing business in real estate and SendOutCards all by word of mouth (referrals). Being introduced to SendOutCards during one of the busiest times of their lives. Betty Ann was recognized and earned top outside real estate agent in 1996 at Lake Las Vegas. She was a broker in California and Nevada for close to 30 years, surviving the ups and downs of the real estate market. While juggling all her responsibilities as a wife, mother, grandmother and businesswoman, she (as well as Bob) was also in the middle of designing and building their dream home. They discovered that SendOutCards was the perfect answer to reach out and connect with clients and associates. It is a unique online greeting card company that allows the sender to use a personal photo, add a message and include a gift all from a computer or smart phone device. “It is a great way to build a strong relationship and make it stronger with appreciation and gratitude. We discovered that by using this simple marketing tool for businesses as well as reaching out to individuals it has a whole new meaning to creating a relationship that will last forever. I love the fact that when your card and, if you sent one, gift arrives at their office or home and it makes an impression that they can touch and feel,” she explained. They used the services to the point where it started to grow organically as another business. In August 2006 they attended their first company convention and realized this might be their next endeavor. While Betty Ann loved being a real estate broker, it was very time consuming. Bob’s businesses also took him away from home for long periods with great demands on his time and energy. They decided to expand their success through this unique network marketing program and within a year started earning six figures. After 12 years, they have expanded their reach across the United States as well as into Canada, Australia, United Kingdom and Singapore. They tell everyone that SendOutCards is a
GOLDEN NUGGETS By Betty Ann and Bob Golden
The CURE—Communicate, Understand, and Respect Everyone / everyday When asked about the secret to our long and happy marriage, we tell people it’s all about communication. We appreciate, love and respect each other even more now than we did when we first got married because we have expanded our awareness through personal growth. Communicate genuinely so you can understand and respect each other. This is the formula for any successful relationship, whether it’s family or business.
THE GENUINE FACTOR
Communication begins with you: tune into your heart and soul so that the thoughts that are forming and what’s coming out of your mouth are an expression of who you are and not what you think the other person wants to hear. If you’re saying how you really feel in a loving way, you can’t say the wrong thing, because it’s coming directly from your heart. When we appreciate and love ourselves, that radiates out and everyone feels good.
THE 4 L’S
We’re a lamp to light the path for others. However, they need to walk the path. We’re a lifeboat to get others across troubled waters. However, they need to get into the lifeboat. We’re a ladder to help others reach to new heights. However, they need to climb the ladder. And we do this all with love.
THE WINDSHIELD
Where do you focus your attention—in the past, present, or future? When you’re driving a car, your windshield is bigger than the rearview mirror for a reason. Continued on the next page -

In 2009 they earned their company’s Distributor of the Year award and in 2010 they reached the top level of Eagle in their company. Betty Ann and Bob now serve as master trainers and advisory board members to help their company expand internationally.
Betty Ann, along with Bob, believes that happiness is a choice, and that wealth and success are 80 percent mindset and 20 percent mechanics. Through attending events, business networking and elite social gatherings, they empower people to forge lasting bonds and friendships, enrich others’ lives, share business ideas and support philanthropic causes.

Raised in a loving family, the continuing love story began when Betty Ann was 13 years old and Bob was 15 years old. “When we met, we couldn’t stop staring at each other but it would be another year before I saw Bob again. It was through my brother’s wedding as a bridesmaid when I was able to connect with him again as an usher in his wedding. We dated for two years, got married and started a family right away,” she said. Still, Betty Ann advises women to “love themselves first. My mother was very instrumental to how I learned to look at life. Mom loved us to a fault that she didn’t think about herself when we were growing up. This taught me through observation and living my own life that to truly love someone you first must love yourself.” She understands that women question how to love themselves when they want to take care of other people as well. “This is not being selfish but realizing that I am just as worthy to receive love for myself.” Reading and following masters such as Neville Goddard, Ester Hicks (Abraham-Hicks), Rhonda Byrne, Napoleon Hill, Og Mandino, Maya Angelo and many more; Betty Ann expanded in all areas of her life. Her philosophy is both simple and profound. “I love my life. If you love what you are then you are going to love your life.” Betty Ann has been encouraged by many authors to put her experiences down on paper, so she is currently writing a book where she is incorporating acronyms that she has created. She develops acronyms of words that actually explains the meaning of the word and has relevance to her life experiences. Her book will also be around her lessons of life to help others become their genuine self in order to experience the amazing relationships that surround them. Her goal is to inspire others as she lives the life she loves so they can do the same. Golden Greetings, Inc. GOLDEN NUGGETS If you’re constantly looking in the rearview mirror, you’re going to crash into something because you’ll run off the road. Instead, be present in the car and look out the windshield into the future. If you’re not focused there, you will run into problems.
THE SLIGHT EDGE
We absolutely live our life by the slight edge. To go from ordinary to extraordinary, all you have to do is add a little extra. Taking that small extra step or right action and being consistent with it over a period of time makes all the difference. You can’t just do it today and forget about it tomorrow. You’ve got to be persistent and commit to a daily process.
FLY LIKE AN EAGLE
An eagle cannot fly unless it meets the resistance of the air for lift. An airplane cannot take off unless it’s going down the runway and it meets the resistance of the air coming at it. That’s what creates lift. When we experience resistance in our life, we get an opportunity to lift to higher levels. Most of us try to avoid resistance as much as we can, missing out on precisely what could propel us forward. Embrace resistance and allow it to serve you.
GOLDEN LIGHT
We’re all born with God’s golden light, which is our spirit or soul. This golden light illuminates the path of who we are and leads us to the genius within. Over the years, your golden light can get buried under hurt and negativity. The best way to uncover your golden light is to constantly give gratitude, appreciation, and love. This will gradually start chipping away at the piles of minutiae that have dimmed your inner light.

BLENDING THE OLD WITH THE NEW ONE WORLD HEALING GOING GLOBAL BY JODI FRIEDMAN
S
ince I was featured on the cover of the summer issue of Las Vegas Woman magazine, the emphasis this fall has been on bringing about deep healing to the entire global community. As mankind comes to realize that it holds within itself a great power to bring things back into balance, people everywhere have begun working TOGETHER for a higher purpose. People woke up to so many natural disasters all over the planet; unearthing people’s deep emotions of helplessness. During this time of emotional and physical turmoil, various locations experienced a deep loss of lives through natural forces. On the heels of the hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires and the Route 91 Harvest Festival; tragedy shook up the world. It brought people closer together more than ever before. Thousands of people in Las Vegas, as well as around the globe, united into one singular front; sorting out the beginning needs to help each other. Personally being part of the Las Vegas community effort inspired One World Healing, a group being designed to collaborate as a global community helping humanity heal spiritually and emotionally. As a speaker and spiritual teacher in Intentional Healings, I have created a new platform to bridge the gap of the spiritually
awakening worldwide community. Due to this One October tragic event, the community that had been labeled Sin City is proving itself to become fiercely #VegasStrong! Southern Nevadans are recognizing their compassionate roots of connection by supporting each other. Life’s senseless tragedies show the world that it always has the resources it needs to thrive, and people are finding that it’s better to assist one another rather than needlessly rage and fight. There has become a greater opportunity to change from the inside out now; unifying and feeling that the world truly is connected and that nobody needs to stand alone. Myself, Theresa Lange and Josh Carpenter along with other Las Vegas leaders, recently formed the new transformational group, One World Healing. This is our sincere effort to bring communities closer together while addressing the continuing needs of a community that is grieving. Keeping the bonds strong over time to assist those in true need is the mission and purpose. Events are being planned, leaders are stepping up and this community is taking shape. People from around the world are joining in to support humanity on many levels.

T
he deadly tragedy of One October and the community of Las Vegas coming together will remain as a part of history. While the shootings and its aftermath will continue to affect those involved for decades, the world witnessed the strength of the community of Las Vegas. Known as Sin City as well as for its hospitality as a premier destination, the people of Southern Nevada demonstrated that they can rise to any crisis. The amazing display of humanity was witnessed as the women and men who call Las Vegas home served the wounded, honored the deceased and comforted the families and friends. Millions of dollars was raised, galloons of blood were donated and the outpouring of hope and healing continues. Thousands of people attended the opening of the Las Vegas Healing Garden and Remembrance Wall during First Friday in October. The crowds have grown at other events, which celebrates the spirit of Las Vegas. There has been recordbreaking attendance at various conventions. People have realized that the community of Las Vegas comes together and will continue to host visitors from around the world.
Las Vegas Woman magazine celebrates the spirit of Southern Nevada and those who truly make it #VegasStrong. Literally thousands of people contributed during this trying time. Each was involved in different ways and still continues to reach out. While the news cycle might report on other events, all of us will continue to stand #VegasStrong. Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman A voice of reason While Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman represents the city with dignity, grace and humor in the spotlight, the glare became intense right after One October. She turned the unforgiving light into a shining star that is Las Vegas. This included speaking with the national and international media, greeting President Trump and Vice President Pence and attending memorials for victims. Las Vegas Healing Garden and Remembrance Wall was put together in four days and Mayor Goodman was there to speak and cut the ribbon during an emotional First Friday. enormous risks to their own safety, including those who lost their lives. Our faith-initiative groups and religious leaders got out there immediately, going to the hospitals and going to the site to give comfort and help.” Immediately after receiving notice about the events unfolding during the Route 91 Harvest festival, she called Sheriff Joe Lombardo and they decided that she should go to University Medical Center trauma unit. Mayor Goodman was able to reach out to the wounded as well as the family and friends of survivors and victims who died. “What I realized is that each human being, if we looked at them starting with kindergarten on, had thousands of people with whom they connected. Those lives are forever changed.” She knew what her role should be during this event. As Mayor Goodman explained, all mayors, especially since 9-11, participate in the Federal Emergency Management Agency program for one week. Mayor Goodman attended when she was first elected and everyone continues to train. Participants include law enforcement, Red Cross, social services support systems, faith initiatives, hotel security and hospital staff members as well. Every imaginable emergency situation is discussed and then everyone practices what to do if it becomes reality. As mayor, she learned to operate in crisis situations and disasters including natural or man-made. “We continually practice in Southern Nevada so when this happened, I knew what to do,” she stated. “Safety is No. 1, everyone involved is well trained and it worked. This is the safest city in the country, if not the world. Fear will not control us.” As Mayor Goodman explained, the Route
91 Harvest festival represented a healthy America celebrating its best through country music. Las Vegas is one of the most diverse communities in the nation including socio-economics, cultural, nationalities, generations, religions, race and languages. “We enjoy our diversity here and to see everyone pulling together was miraculous and so inspiring. We have a unique group of people here, we are so proud of the totality of the group and we take great pride in our harmony.” The Las Vegas Healing Garden and Remembrance Wall It started with a vision on a napkin. With an estimated 400 volunteers, along with hundreds who donated material and expertise, the Las Vegas Healing Garden and Remembrance Wall was revealed during First Friday on Oct. 6.
City Attorney Brad Jerbic holds up a photo of Cameron Robinson, one of the One October victims.
During the opening ceremony and ribbon cutting, City Attorney Brad Jerbic gave an emotional speech. Cameron Robinson, a records specialist in Jerbic’s office, was among the 58 victims and Robinson’s partner was wounded. Choirs sang and Mayor Goodman told the crowd that there are 58 new stars in the sky. The park will feature a pathway, seating area and memorial wall as well as 58 trees planted to remember the victims who died during the Route 91 Harvest festival. The remembrance wall includes messages, photos and memories. At the garden’s center is the Tree of Life, an oak donated by Siegfried and Roy. The garden and wall continues to draw crowds, located at Casino Center Boulevard and Coolidge Avenue in downtown Las Vegas.

WHO DO YOU WANT TO BE IN 2018? BY TONYA TWITCHELL
A
s you think back on the past 12 months, what are you most proud of when you think of accomplishments and moments? What are the wins and discoveries that you can celebrate and acknowledge about yourself and in your life? How and when did you show up as the person and leader you most want to be remembered being? Where and when did you stumble or misstep?
Why are these words important to you? How are you already living these words in your life? As you think about areas for improvement in 2018, what is one specific skill, practice or habit that, if you learned or developed it (or perhaps, just did it more consistently), could make a significant impact on the results that you create? How does this skill, practice or habit align with who you want to be as a leader?
As a champion of people and possibilities, I spend a lot of time thinking about and talking about the intersection of leadership and legacy in and across lives. For me, I believe that each of us is a leader and that each moment is a new chance for us to move closer to—or farther away—from the legacy we say we want to create in our lives.
In terms of your legacy, what did you create in 2017? Was the legacy you created a legacy of design or a legacy of default? What, specifically, do you want your legacy to look like at the end of 2018? What will you need to do or prioritize differently in order to create this result?
In my life, I have learned that our legacy exists, lives and breathes in the moments and interactions of our lives. This year, be intentional and specific about the legacy you are creating. Allow you to be and become the highest and best version of yourself. Know that you will have failures, missteps and stumbles. These are part of our journey and the moments that follow can instantly become our best opportunities. Be gracious and forgiving toward yourself. Remember to champion and celebrate yourself and others along the way. I toast to your leadership and legacy!
Finally, what are the stories or failures you need to rewrite or retire? What expectations or missteps are you holding onto that, if released, could free up important energy and potential to create an entirely different result? Who are the people you most need to forgive or champion differently? What would it look like for you to

LEAD WITH LOVE, A TRIBUTE TO LAS VEGAS
Written by Vivian Wright, Director of Development, New Vista Photography by Ben Robertson
O
ne week after the Las Vegas mass shooting, members of Southern Nevada’s Intellectually and Developmentally Disabled community joined together to pay tribute to the lives that were lost and those affected by the tragedy. The event, which was organized by New Vista and Gracie’s House, local Las Vegas nonprofit organizations serving the IDD community, hosted a gathering of over 100 individuals living with IDD, their families and advocates, who participated in a community art project, “Lead With Love, A Tribute To Las Vegas.” Las Vegas Fire and Rescue’s Special Operations Chief and Co-Founder of Gracie’s House, Craig Cooper, originated the project concept. Among the first responders on the scene of the Route 91 shooting, Cooper, a father of a daughter with Down Syndrome, realized the need to create a space for support and healing for the IDD community. “The events that transpired on the evening of Oct. 1 are difficult for anyone to understand. It is challenging to process this unspeakable tragedy. Our goal was to provide a safe space where we could grieve together, and begin the healing process in an inclusive environment, “ explained Cooper.
Las Vegas artists Robin Barcus-Slonina, Niya Muhammad and Coral Smith-Newberry led the group art project. The participants designed and painted 150 canvasses, each depicting a heart. The canvasses will be arranged in a grid on a wood panel, uniting the individual hearts as part of a community mural.

hen the economic crash happened in 2008, James Lutz, saw it as an opportunity to move to Las Vegas and begin a new phase in his career. Working as a regional vice president in the mortgage industry in Utah, James wanted to educate, inform and help his clients in a different way. He is passionate about the field of finance and knows it is important for the well being of people to be financial fit. “I have been in finance for 21 years helping people. This included helping people increasing their credit scores, loans for land development for businesses and other services to achieve financial stability,” James explained. “What I love doing is educating my clients. Knowledge is key in order to make the best decisions possible for their financial planning.” James started with New York Life in 2017. Planning beginning today can create a better tomorrow. “For example, if one considers the compound interest in a qualified retirement plan such as a 401(k) plan and begins making contributions to the plan in their 20s, it can potentially generate much more than beginning in their 30s or 40s,” W o m a n M a g a z i n e .V e g a s » 7 1 » W I N T E R 2 0 1 7 - 2 0 1 8

hen Jennifer Florendo planned on how to address home health care issues for her family in 2007, she never planned on making it her career. But life is fluid with changes and Jennifer is now the owner/operator of Hallmark Homecare franchise. The home health service agency searches for and recruits professional, independent caregivers and then places them on a direct-hire basis, which can save clients money. What started her thinking about changing careers happened two years ago when Jennifer was helping her mother-in-law purchase a condo in Las Vegas. “It really opened my eyes what seniors have to go through later in life, especially if they don’t have family nearby. This was a new time in her life and I didn’t know where to go if she had additional needs.” When Jennifer was diagnosed with Type I diabetes 10 years ago, she realized that she needed to plan her future differently. Jennifer knew that in time her parents and mother-inlaw would get older and might need home health care. While she didn’t have any children at the time, she wanted to prepare and now is happily the mother of a daughter.
Hallmark Homecare “I love to be creative and share compassion with people. Being in home care allows me to use all of my skills as well as care for people,” Jennifer explained. “There are so many people I would not have met had I not gone down this path. I feel so good that I can impact so many people’s lives in a good and uplifting way.” Jennifer works closely with many assisted living and independent care living facilities as well as private families. She helps clients interview, select and hire independent caregivers. There are many benefits including the client can choose their health care professional, there is continuity since the caregiver works for the family and it stretches care dollars farther, often saving clients up to 50 percent on care costs. She can help provide caregivers nationally since Hallmark Homecare is nationwide. “Today most people are living away from their families but we can still help them wherever they are,” she said. “When someone needs home health care, it is not planned but a need that comes up almost immediately,” Jennifer explained. “But it is not always seniors. Many younger people W o m a n M a g a z i n e .V e g a s » 7 3 » W I N T E R 2 0 1 7 - 2 0 1 8
need help due to accidents or illness. Children with disabilities will sometimes require help of a homecare worker. We can provide that as well.” Las Vegas is her home and Jennifer gives back to the community. She volunteers with Home Health and Hospice. While it does not affect her personally, Jennifer is very passionate about her volunteer work with Friends of Parkinson’s organization. According to Jennifer, Parkinson’s affects about 30,000 people in Las Vegas and she wants to reach more people. If the name seems familiar, Jennifer worked at Las Vegas Woman magazine at the Editor-inChief and still writes for the magazine. FOR YOUR BUSINESS By McKenzie Chambers
ver the last few years, digital platforms as well as the marketing process has changed tremendously. Social media combined with the capabilities that smart phones can engage in is changing businesses of all kinds. Many marketing gurus inform that an immense part of being successful is reaching a specific targeted audience and in a way that keeps them interested and engaged. One easy way to do so is with video marketing. Whether it be social media, live videos, YouTube videos, ads, television commercials, testimonials, website content or product videos, video content is one of the most efficient and effective ways to reach preferred clientele. For most people, time is very limited. Everyone has jobs, families, pets, cleaning and special occasions. Many people do not have time to sit down or read when looking for something specific. Videos are fast and one can get a point across within minutes or even seconds. Almost 60 percent of all videos published in the last year are less than two minutes long. Video marketing is a quick and efficient way to get a company’s story across. Another important aspect of any type of marketing is relating to clients. When someone looks at a video, they automatically
try to justify its content to something they can relate to and something they can trust. Videos are not only more memorable, but they are much more entertaining as well. When one sees a written testimonial, it doesn’t necessarily have the same effect as when it is seen visually. Video testimonials are more believable and trustworthy than that of the written word. It’s more intimate and communicates a much more emotional, meaningful message. Video marketing provides a relatable response for those who are watching and processing the content. When looking at the statistical aspects of video marketing, it is a necessary commodity in today’s business world. Here are some stats: • 43 percent of people want to see more video content from marketers. • The presence of video alone affects the most important SEO ranking factor. • Almost 50 percent of internet users look for videos that relate to a service or product before visiting an office or store. • People spend more time on pages with video content. W o m a n m a g a z i n e .V e g a s » 7 5 » W I N T E R 2 0 1 7 - 2 0 1 8
• 55 percent of people watch videos online everyday. • Marketers who use video grow revenue 49 percent faster than nonvideo users. Technology is changing how businesses communicate with their customers. Video marketing without a doubt is a part of this. Although not every video type may be suitable for a company, it is still an important and key tool in pushing a brand to the top. Video itself creates a stronger customer engagement, which is something all companies strive for. People are interacting with videos today more than ever before. It is a necessity to amp up video marketing content to connect with customers. So, to reach marketing goals and continue to accentuate a brand, give it maximum exposure with video content. MY FUN AND WILD RIDE IN A JAGUAR BY BRANDI DOSS
P
eople who own a Jaguar experience fun, adventure and excitement. Understanding this unique culture, Jaguar Land Rover Las Vegas brings its owners together for road trips for the ultimate enjoyment of driving a Jaguar. For a recent adventure, I rode with a friend who owns a new Jaguar F-type high performance edition. We began our day at the Jaguar Land Rover Las Vegas dealership with a continental breakfast where I also had the opportunity to speak with another woman who is driving her second Jaguar. She told me about the features, price point and that it was one of the quietest cars inside as she hears very little road noise. The businesswoman often uses the car phone
system for calls pertaining to her business, making a good system very important. She also shared that she had been involved in a direct impact collision, but was okay and the car had very little damage. I was extremely impressed with the safety features and was ready to buy a Jaguar that morning. We then drove to the Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch located in Pahrump (springmountainmotorsports.com). After taking some fun photos, we were given instructions and an overview about driving on the track. We donned our helmets, enjoyed a picnic lunch and then headed to the track. I got to ride with one of the instructors, a former NASCAR driver with years of professional driving experience. The

acceleration was fast, braking hard and the turns tight, but it was intense and fun! We were in an F-type car, which handled so well. It was a crazy but exhilarating ride. The seats are so comfortable with many ways to adjust including what I call hug handles. I can set how much the sides of the seat will hug and support me. The displays in the cars are extremely easy to read and operate. The car drove extremely smooth in turns, on the road and it was nearly seamless at any speed. Having had the experience I did with the owners’ event, I am highly impressed with Jaguars. Jaguar features comfort, confidence and safety. Come test drive one at Jaguar Land Rover Las Vegas located at 5255 W. Sahara Ave. For more information, visit JLRLV.com.

STAYING PRODUCTIVE IN THE DIGITAL AGE
F
ocusing on work and business can sometimes seem impossible. When there is 24/7 access to videos, quizzes, Pinboards and online shopping, it can be hard to stay productive, meet deadlines and have the motivation to get back to work. Professionals can very easily get distracted, but it’s important to know when to hide those tabs and get back to the task at hand. Check out some quick tips to focus on productivity.
LIMIT MULTITASKING
One of the main reasons people procrastinate is because they get overwhelmed by all of the projects that need to be completed. Sometimes, when there is such a large workload, the quality of the work can suffer. While multitasking is a great skill to have in life, it can also make people less productive. To maintain a great work product, it’s important to prioritize
projects, limit multitasking and focus on one piece of work at a time.
TAKE REGULAR BREAKS
When a project or task is completed, go ahead and take a quick fiveminute break. Walking away from the computer is a great way to keep office space for work and not play. Whether taking a walk or sitting in the conference room to check social media, it’s beneficial to overall productivity to keep work and play spaces separate.
PLAN THE WORKLOAD
Many professionals will underestimate how much time they will need to complete a project, so they end up procrastinating right up to the deadline. To stay productive when working on a project, take some time to diagram what really needs to be done. Planning and scheduling the
day’s workload will help to stay on track and finish projects before the deadlines.
ELIMINATE DISTRACTIONS
It might seem very difficult to do, but eliminating all of those unnecessary distractions will really maintain productivity. Put the phone on do not disturb, lock the office door or head to a quiet place, like a conference room or empty office space, to finish the project. Knowing when to click out of extra windows and get back to work is no easy task. Distractions are bountiful, so it’s important to stay focused and complete the work to eliminate stress trying to meet deadlines, or worse, missing them due to procrastination. It takes time and practice, but with proper planning and discipline, anyone can stay productive in the digital age.

A GOOD READ TO EDUCATE, INSPIRE AND ENTERTAIN
Historical women, happiness without regret and scary trip into a small town Written and compiled by Debbie Hall
O
ver the holidays and into the New Year, these books are certain to motivate sticking to new resolutions, sharing ideas and being memorized with action and thrills.
EDUCATE
Negatively Ever After: A Skeptic’s Guide to Happiness by Deanna Willmon Public speaker and author Deanna Willmon explores negativity, being positive and creating happiness from a different perspective. The author was inspired to write her book when she realized she was jealous of perpetually positive people because the mainstream idea is that happiness is equal to positivity. Willmon finally realized that it wasn’t necessary to get rid of all negativity in order to be happy, but to work with it and understand it. One profound idea is to embrace dislikes without judgment. After evaluating, one can work on a dislike because of they want to, not because they have to or they will never be happy. Using a simple Happiness Bank analogy, Willmon shares her research, experiences and missteps in discovering that negativity is not the enemy. From achieving self-adoration and learning what gratitude truly means to determining whether sharing happiness is really a clever idea, this book explains how to develop Negativity Wisdom in order to embrace and effectively utilize inherent negative tendencies. She debunks the popular misconception that being positive and being happy is synonymous.

Nevada Women’s Legacy: 150 Years of Excellence by Marlene J. Adrian and Denise M. Gerdes The 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization Women of Diversity Productions, Inc. initiated a cultural and historical project to celebrate women of the Nevada Sesquicentennial (150 years). Embracing women from all of the state, committee members of the project interviewed over 200 women to document the stories of Nevada women who made their mark from 1864 to 2014. Members collected oral histories, video interviews, diaries, photographs and personal treasures of Nevada women and their contributions, which are now permanently stored and displayed. Professions featured include doctors, nurses, educators, politicians, homemakers, artists, authors, farmers, ranchers and lawyers. Also included are the First Ladies of Nevada as well as representation of all of the counties. It commemorates the varied contributions and diversification of those living in Nevada. The coffee table book, full of photos and inspiring bios, show how women demonstrate and embrace the state’s motto of “Nevada Proud, Nevada Battle Born.” W o m a n m a g a z i n e .V e g a s » 9 1 » W I N T E R 2 0 1 7 - 2 0 1 8
ENTERTAIN
Wicked Prayers by S. D. Moore Award winning author S. D. Moore has crafted a novel about good versus evil with a battle in the fictional place of Automntown. Del Cameron is an ex-military officer turned detective who is called to stop the evil powers and the dreadful creatures unleashed in his city. He gathers an unusual band of heroes to fight these formidable adversaries while searching his own soul. Cameron’s backstory is a conflict of a sleepy town with memories of violent crime that might have been committed elsewhere but seared in his memory. With a kidnapping of a child, it becomes a never-ending battle of characters to stay alive whether on the side of good or evil. The story is filled with thrills, horror, mystery, action and the supernatural. Action starts quickly and takes the reader on a horror roller coaster ride throughout the entire novel. The development of the characters is deep while combining horror, suspense and even a little comedy. This is a mix of supernatural genre with a touch of mystery, action sequences and epic characters.

MAT FRANCO’S GUIDE TO
M
agician Mat Franco recently celebrated his second anniversary headlining “MAGIC REINVENTED NIGHTLY” in the newly renamed Mat Franco Theater at The LINQ Hotel & Casino. Since winning NBC’s “America’s Got Talent,” the millennial magician has explored his new home and selected his top list of places that both locals and tourists need to visit for the Vegas Experience. THE BELLAGIO FOUNTAINS If you are coming to Las Vegas for the first time, how can you NOT plan to see this world-famous spectacle? It’s even free! When you’re walking the Strip, take a moment to stop and enjoy them. TERRACE POINTE CAFE This is a wonderful morning/brunch spot to enjoy at the Wynn Hotel and Casino. It’s worth waiting for an outdoor table on a nice day. They have a versatile menu complete with breakfast, lunch and vegetarian/vegan options. TOP GOLF Las Vegas is evolving all the time, and this
is one of the new hotspots. I’m not a golfer, and I have a blast at this place. There are multiple floors of fun, including bars, pools, food and, of course, their signature driving range. CONTAINER PARK You haven’t really done Las Vegas until you’ve been downtown. Check out Container Park for an eclectic mix of shops and restaurants all housed inside of giant storage containers. Truly a unique experience! OMNIA NIGHTCLUB AT CAESARS PALACE Most people feel that their Las Vegas experience isn’t complete without visiting the club scene. My pick is Omnia at Caesars Palace because it has a great outdoor terrace facing the Las Vegas Strip. Sometimes when the inside vibe is too much to handle, it’s nice to have a lower key get-a-away right at the same venue. HIGH ROLLER AT LINQ PROMENADE This is the world’s largest observation wheel standing over 550 feet tall. It’s a half hour ride that gives you the best views

in Las Vegas. If you’re here to party, my suggestion is you upgrade to the Happy Half Hour and take advantage of the open bar. FASHION SHOW MALL For those looking to shop, check out this huge mall on the Las Vegas Strip. It has everything you need to get your shopping fix all in one place. BROOKLYN BOWL Located at the heart of the strip on The LINQ Promenade, visit this unique venue to see nationally touring music and comedy acts, enjoy great food and drink and bowl the night away! Mat Franco stars in “MAGIC REINVENTED NIGHTLY” in the newly renamed Mat Franco Theater at The LINQ Hotel & Casino with a fun and feel good twist on magic that defies all expectations. With his signature brand of breezy humor, Mat mixes his amazingly inventive and stunning magic with crowd-guided improv, creating a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
