Almost 10 years ago, I was skydiving for my birthday. Now, after having my daughter last year, I’m all about safety and wouldn’t think of jumping out of a plane. I’ve become overly concerned with my health. I want to be around for her to see her though her school years, marriage and beyond. Being in top health is crucial so I can care, play and teach her as she grows up. Everything matters, from dental care to mammograms. Like most people, when it’s time to find a doctor or specialist, it’s nice to ask a friend whom they recommend. You can think of this issue of Las Vegas Woman magazine as your trusted friend. Welcome to our annual Doctors of the Desert Issue. Brand and Troy Doss of our graphics team have welcomed their first baby girl, Brooke Doss. They have been through so much, including an unfortunate event in which their car caught on fire in the garage, which spread to the rest of the house just two weeks before Brooke was born. Thank you to the community who prayed and donated to their GoFundMe page; they are extremely grateful. The Dosses truly understand the meaning of good health, especially when health is all you have after losing virtually all material things in a fire. We love and admire them for their perseverance and seeing the silver lining in any situation. From all of us at Las Vegas Woman magazine, huge congratulations to them and their beautiful baby girl.

As always, thank you to our advertisers for their contributing support. Remember, it is with their support that our publication can continue to educate, entertain and showcase noteworthy individuals in our community. If you are in the market for one of their services, please thank them by calling and visiting them. Finally, thank you for spending your valuable time reading our publication. We hope you find value in the fall issue of Las Vegas Woman magazine. To educate, entertain & inspire,

Tammy Grabel

hat a summer it has been! Our graphics team at 702West (husband and wife) had a baby girl during the time the magazine was being laid out. However, kudos to their incredible staff that worked tirelessly to create our amazing Fall issue. It is our Doctors of the Desert issue and, as always, we feature some amazing physicians. The doctors of Southern Nevada are always introducing the latest in technology and procedures. With our own mini-baby boom, midwives are profiled in this issue. There are also those doctors who treat the aging population, primary care, dental health, sight and sexual health. Our cover, Desert Radiologists, showcase the doctors who partner with other physicians with important tools for diagnosis and treatments. Along with our health care coverage is the importance of fun and relaxation. Boulder City is a hidden gem combining the rich history of Nevada with small town charm. Rosarito Beach Hotel and Resort offers the perfect vacation, located on the oceanfront of Baja, just 30 miles south of San Diego. Check out the great pizzas, delicious wines and spirits featured for the cooler days and pleasant evenings. For the latest trends in beauty, check out Goody Bag and the newest for fashion for fall is available at Eccoci. Single? Dr. Tiger writes about using dating apps as a way to meet someone. Meet the fantastic team behind the cover that captures the essence of our cover models. Our publisher, Tammy Grabel and her husband, entertainer Seth Grabel, along with Grace, got to spend a month in Hawaii while Seth performed. Grace is quite the fashionista (much like her mother) and is walking with incredible speed and style. The Las Vegas Woman magazine family continues to grow and our readers are a big part of that family. Thank you for being a part of it.

t one time, the Las Vegas Strip offered big productions featuring the most beautiful showgirls. Today, “VEGAS! The Show” is the only show featuring iconic Las Vegas showgirls while paying homage to the glamour of Las Vegas in the past. The Broadway-style production incorporates the classic and timeless glamour that makes Las Vegas the “Entertainment Capital of the World.” Performances from the Rat Pack, Elvis Presley, Sonny & Cher and Tina Turner embrace the past. Current entertainers with residency shows such as Sir Elton John demonstrate why the stars of today appear on the Las Vegas Strip. The Show” and has been with the show over three years. Born in Los Angeles and raised in San Francisco, while watching her older sister dance, Le

Clear knew she wanted to be a dancer too. She began instruction at the age of five and was exposed to dance with an emphasis in ballet that led to studying a variety of styles. Le Clear has been a dancer for the Golden State Warriors in the National Basketball Association, dance company member and assistant director for the Lotus Dance Company based in Los Angeles and dancer/ aerial artist for Royal Caribbean Cruise lines. As a young woman, Le Clear enjoys performing in the show, celebrating the glamour of Las Vegas. “The idea of being a showgirl and portraying a showgirl in a city where this iconic figure thrives is a wonderful experience for me,” Le Clear said. “I have been a dancer in many shows and played many parts and characters. them to return to their better selves. Apples and honey are eaten to symbolize a sweet new year, and everyone greets each other with wishes for “L’shanah tovah,” a good year. Most congregations have a special prayer book reserved for the High Holy Days. Rabbi Malcolm Cohen of Temple Sinai, a diverse Reform synagogue in Summerlin, explained, “High Holy Days are particularly special because of our prayer book. In it, there are all kinds of creative material to allow for the different kinds of people who are entering that space. Those who are looking for traditional prayers, those who question the idea of God’s existence, those who are going through personal struggles; each person will hear something that speaks to them.” Rosh Hashanah is fairly solemn, marked by rich music and powerful liturgy. Prayers are spoken and petitions for peace are made through song. “The music is elevated with a full chorus and additional musicians, and special melodies are sung that we only hear once each year during this time, like ‘Avinu Malkeinu,’” said cantorial soloist Heather Klein. “Being in the choir at Temple Sinai is very spiritual and as we sing and lead the congregation in prayer, we all come together as one. I can’t imagine anything more special,” said chorus member Jackie Kolner.

L

as Vegas is home to about 100,000 Jewish residents who will gather this October to observe the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Along with other Jews around the world, it is a time for worship and prayer for God to grant everyone another year of health, prosperity and peace. The most important and holiest days occur in the fall, beginning with Rosh Hashanah and ending 10 days later with Yom Kippur. The intermediary days are called “Yamim Noraim,” also known as the Days of Awe. Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year and first of the 10 High Holy Days, starts at sundown on Oct. 2 and heralds in the year 5777 on the Jewish calendar. Generations of Jews gather in their synagogues to hear the blast of the shofar, a ram’s horn that signals the ushering in of a new year, reminding

W o m a n M a g a z i n e .V e g a s

All of this introspection and reflection culminates with the most important Jewish day of the year: Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. It is a time to engage in meaningful prayer from sundown the night before through most of the next day. It is a time to confess sins against God and ask forgiveness for the offenses committed over the past year. In addition, most adults will fast, refraining from food or even water, for about 25 hours. After the day’s spiritual work is done, a joyful meal is shared with family and friends. Temple Sinai congregant Ilana Shapiro embraces food customs that have formed in her family over generations, toasting in the New Year with honey laced challah with raisins, savory brisket and honey cake. Yom Kippur is a very serious day but one from which Jews emerge refreshed and renewed, ready to begin a fresh new year of being their best selves. Perhaps the most significant part of High Holy Days is the gathering of generations in continuance of Jewish traditions. Temple Sinai president Les Sherman shared, “The High Holy Days are a special time of prayer, music, reflection and learning. We come together with our biological and congregational families to reconnect, reflecting on the past year and renewing ourselves for the year to come.”

UNITED WAY OF SOUTHERN

NEVADA WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP COUNCIL Celebrates Its Members

I

n June, the United Way of Southern Nevada Women’s Leadership Council celebrated the local women who joined its national network of dedicated philanthropists, but, more importantly, the organization showed how it will continue the work of creating a better community. This powerful group of women leaders nationwide has collectively raised over $1 billion in supporting United Way’s mission to improve lives and build stronger communities. In Southern Nevada, the WLC has raised almost $1.9 million in just eight years, investing their dollars in crucial projects, which are changing lives. This year alone, WLC has committed $349,095 to programs in education, income and health, the foundation for a better life.

In education, WLC is supporting familiar agencies in the Las Vegas community including Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada, Clark County School District, The Smith Center for the Performing Arts and Spread the Word Nevada. The agency programs funded by WLC benefit students and teachers, from preschool to high school graduation. Early childhood educators will be trained in innovative, arts-based teaching methods through the Smith Center’s Wolf Trap Early Learning program, learning fun new ways to get children involved in the classroom. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade will have access to homework and learning assistance through the Boys and Girls Club Power Hour Tutors and reading expansion

activities through Spread the Word Nevada’s Breakfast With Books and Books & Buddies programs. High school seniors at two local high schools will have the opportunity to visit colleges and have the resources they need to reach graduation through the Family Engagement Resource Centers. WLC’s support continues through the entire community to improve the lives of women and families. Families are moving out of poverty through the Financial Stability for Families program at the Women’s Development Center, which provides education, training and one-on-one financial counseling. Also through the support of WLC, eight outstanding young women, who otherwise might not have been able to attend college, received scholarships to help them obtain a four-year degree and have the education to be financially successful in the future. Helping to build healthy lives, WLC women funded two agencies that have already made a huge impact in our community through previous WLC funding. The Shade Tree’s Stallman Touro Clinic provides medication, supplies and equipment to help over 200 domestic violence victims and their children. Girls on the Run inspires third to fifth grade girls in at-risk schools, combining goal oriented training with positive messaging. At the end of the program, girls complete a 5K run, some even with their new running buddies, WLC members. More than simply funding programs, WLC is creating a stronger future for Southern Nevada. As Alyssa Mayor, one of the recipients of WLC’s Emerging Leadership Award for Women, said, “the people behind the actual scholarship continue to support me, and I have strong women as my role models.” The incredible women that make up the WLC are supporting programs, organizations and individuals that will improve people’s lives in Southern Nevada for years to come.

A NEW FUTURE

For Provost Diane Chase and UNLV By Debbie Hall

N

oted archaeologist Diane Chase has been selected as the new executive vice president and provost for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. As UNLV’s chief academic officer, Chase will work closely with deans and faculty to develop, implement and promote educational and scholarship goals. This includes classes and academic programs especially for students’ success initiatives. She is also focusing on the new medical school opening soon, including its location and financing. She will oversee academic and budgetary policy and priorities, as well as work with UNLV president Len Jessup to implement UNLV’s ambitious strategic plan to become a top tier public university in research, education and community impact. For the past 15 years, Chase has served in a variety of administrative roles for the nation’s second largest university. “Diane is a dynamic leader whose expertise as a faculty member and administrator will benefit UNLV greatly and help drive us toward our top tier goals,” said Jessup. “Her rich experience at the University of Central Florida aligns

with our vision at UNLV to build strong academic programs, support faculty and student success, and forge community partnerships.” Chase brings broad administrative experience to UNLV, having served in leadership roles in academic affairs, planning and evaluation, international and interdisciplinary studies, arts and humanities, and for a time as interim provost at UCF. She also led accreditation and assessment activities for UCF and was a member of the president’s advisory staff. Having developed a love for science at a young age, Chase was inspired by the museums her family visited during vacations. She discovered her passion while attending college, and obtained both a bachelor’s degree and doctorate in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania. Chase’s archaeological work on the ancient Maya earned UCF’s highest faculty honor and led to her election as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She remains active in archaeology, publishing articles, presenting at confer-

ences and conducting fieldwork in the jungles of Belize. As for working as an administrator, “I had envisioned that I would teach and do research after getting my Ph.D.,” she explained. Chase was encouraged by other administrators to consider applying as faculty fellow in the provost office at UCF. “The same skills I used as an archaeologist were also used in administration. This new position became an extension of my skillset, and I was intrigued how it all worked together in a broader context. I wanted to continue in this area as well as my research. I believe my contribution in both areas can make a difference.” Chase hadn’t planned on leaving Florida, but when the opportunity came up at UNLV she researched her options and decided to accept. “Both UCF and UNLV are relatively young universities that grew very quickly, faced similar challenges and offer opportunities with partnerships with the community. I am very happy I did accept.”

ANGELICA SALAZAR: Inspiration of Art Through Emotion By Rose Watson

ngelica Salazar, a 25-yearold dental student, has recently become a new face on the Las Vegas art scene. Her paintings are a fascinating blend of bright pastel color and dark imagery that really capture the imagination. Salazar’s work also uses a variety of textures and levels to her pieces; some canvases feature drips of paint, others crosshatched knife work and roughly pilled paint. Salazar’s subjects vary from landscapes to abstracts as she feels out her creative consciousness, but all of her pieces have a unique blend of beautifully charming and slightly unsettling imagery. Salazar first came to the United States from the Philippines when she was 14. Her parents made the decision to immigrate for the wider opportunities. Through living here for over a decade, she has embraced American culture and sees the U.S. as her home. Salazar is also an immigrant to the art world, though, as she only started painting a year and a half ago. The genesis of Salazar’s art actually comes from a bad breakup she experienced. After her serious relationship fell apart, Salazar did the usual things to try and dispel the funk that had overtaken her mood. She’d go out with friends, have girl nights, go to parties, work more, study more and generally try to stay busy. But she found that she couldn’t escape. “I would come home, and I was forced to face my feelings again,” she explained. Salazar felt like just putting the situation out of her head wasn’t helping her feel better. She knew she needed to find a way to work through her emotions, and it was imperative that that method was healthy. It was a comment from a friend that helped Salazar decide to try painting. The advice was that Salazar needed to not just close that chapter of her life but to also close the entire book and start fresh. Laughing, Salazar said, “Fresh book, fresh canvas … canvas!” That evening she picked up canvas, acrylic

paint and brushes. The first painting didn’t come easy though; the white space was intimidating. Salazar decided that she would start with landscape, primarily trees, remembering how she had drawn trees as a child. As she painted more, positive encouragement flowed from her friends and family, and the seed of passion was beginning to bloom. Salazar’s art is still connected to her emotions. Even the creation of one of her pieces is very much from the heart. “I still don’t know what the piece is going to look like,” she said. “There’s a vision in my head, but every piece is still a surprise.” Salazar is a mixed-media artist, using more than just paint in her works. She utilizes several mediums, such as molding paste and pumice, to create different textures. Salazar believes that art shouldn’t just be one dimension but should extend into the tactile. Salazar is a young artist and the Las Vegas art community has opened its arms to support and guide her. One of the unexpected struggles of being a successful young artist is trying to balance painting for money and painting for passion. According to Salazar, money has a seductive hold on all artists, but especially to someone in Salazar’s position with college loans and unsteady income, it can become the hardest line for an artist to draw. Her mentor in the art world, Alexander Huerta, helped her draw that line with the advice to “paint for passion.” Another guiding light for Salazar is her friend James Shoe, who helped push Salazar into her first show, throwing her into the deep end of emotion and forcing her to publicize her work. His advice to Salazar was, “Being uncomfortable can open up doors.” That advice has certainly helped Salazar as she moves to more daring projects and bigger shows. As Salazar continues to draw inspiration from her emotions and the world around her, she is also moving toward new media. Salazar has been experimenting with mixing her art with textiles by creating hand-designed prints for scarves. Her interest in wearable, livable art doesn’t stop there though.

“I want to design furniture and clothing. My boyfriend and I love interior design,” Salazar said. “I used to do art as my sanctuary, but maybe I could do this for a living someday.” The exciting opportunities that have opened up for Salazar have only deepened her love of art and passion for the craft. “It’s a universal thing. Art with its colors and message, it can communicate with anyone. It is always open to interpretation, and that’s an amazing thing. Between the artist and the viewer there’s an immediate connection,” Salazar explained. This connection has helped Salazar become part of a wonderful community of artists and art lovers, and she reaches out to other young artists. “Keep going, paint for passion and have your creativity take the wheel when you create. That’s my advice,” Salazar said. “Look at your surroundings to find inspiration; it’s everywhere.” Salazar’s story of self-discovery demonstrates that art heals. Art speaks to everyone in the way that they need hear at the moment. It’s a universal form that can be an incredible force for good. Salazar’s experience shows how transformative art can be as she shares her personal journey with others. For more information on Angelica Salazar’s art, visit angelicasgallery.com.

ANGELA PETTIT Combines physical fitness with launch of Azzurre Spirits By Debbie Hall

A

ngela Pettit, an experienced fitness professional, has channeled her tenacity from the gym to the office and has teamed up with her father, Dan Pettit, to develop Azzurre Spirits, based in Las Vegas. Pettit is leading the launch of the company’s core products of Azzurre Vodka and Azzurre Gin with the goal to take the luxury brand global. Pettit takes on a variety of roles and work within every facet of the company, including sales, marketing and operations. The limited amount of distillation the spirits need allow them to achieve its signature smooth taste. According to Pettit, “One of the most exciting trends in our industry is the rise of craft spirits, and with that a greater demand for spirits that are made with natural ingredients. That makes this the ideal time to launch Azzurre, which is handcrafted, as well as distilled from apples, sugarcane and grapes, instead of potatoes, corn or grains. When a premium spirit is distilled multiple times, it’s to reduce harshness. But with that, you lose flavor. Azzurre is minimally distilled, because the flavor is naturally better, as well as smoother. Azzurre is also family-owned, making the brand even more desirable in this renaissance of small company brands.”

Canada. “We visited the town in British Columbia often, when our daughter Angela attended college up there,” said Dan Pettit, owner of Azzurre Spirits. “Canada is known for the best and cleanest water. Azzurre is unique in our distillation process, so this was a perfect fit.”

it is something that my family and I have been talking about for years,” she explained. “My dad has always wanted to create his own gin, so when he proposed we get serious about producing a new type of vodka and gin, I jumped at the opportunity.”

Born and raised in the Bay Area in California, Pettit spent a couple of years living in England. She graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology and moved to Las Vegas after college. Pettit has been a certified personal trainer for two years, with over seven years of experience as an athletic trainer, ranging from varsity to professional sports.

Her father is both her mentor and inspiration. “Seeing how hard he has worked every day in his life pushes me to follow in his footsteps. It is awesome,” Pettit said. “I am spoiled to be able to work with such a successful businessman and learn from him every day.”

As for her career change, “I decided to become a part of the spirits industry because

According to Pettit, “Vodka doesn’t have to make you wrinkle your nose and beg for a sugary chaser. Vodka has the ability to be clean and smooth with its own flavor profile. Gin is the new vodka and is fresh, flavorful and versatile.” Azzurre Spirits has amassed an impressive collection of ratings, including being honored with a 94 rating from the Tasting Panel, a gold medal at the 2016 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, a triple gold medal from MicroLiquor Awards, and a gold medal from Beverage Testing Institute. Azzurre Gin has a silver medal from the 2016 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, 93 rating from the Beverage Tasting Institute, and a 91 rating from the Tasting Panel. The wine is big and bold with intense aromas of blackberry, plum and dark chocolate. The mid-palate is dense with flavors of blueberry, cassis and hints of black pepper. EDUCATE

STAR NURSERY:

FALL IS FOR PLANTING By Paul Noe better known as Dr. Q Staff Horticulturist and Certified Horticulture Advisor, Star Nursery

I

t’s no surprise to gardeners who have lived here for years that now is the best time to put in certain plants. This is especially true for fruit and shade trees. By planting in the fall, it is a good head start toward surviving harsh temperatures next summer. Early fall planting also allows the plants to get over any transplant shock before it gets cold. Extreme temperatures, whether cold or hot, can put stress on plants and make it harder for them to grow or develop properly.

Most plants don’t totally stop growing just because the weather gets cold. In our climate, while it might get cold enough to freeze, seldom does the ground ever freeze solid. Most plants will slow down their growth rate or even stop their entire aboveground growth. However, their roots will continue to grow under the insulating blanket of soil. The roots of these plants are expanding and storing up extra energy during fall and winter to promote bigger and better top growth in the spring. It is especially helpful to fruit and shade trees to be developed as much as possible before next summer. By planting in the fall, plant roots are given an extra three or four months of development over plants that are planted in the spring. The plants will have more roots to take up water and nutrients before the heat arrives next summer. This logic holds true not only for fruit and shade trees, but also for many other plants as well. Any plants that are not harmed by cold, but suffer more in the heat, are good candidates for fall planting. These would include junipers, cypress, pines and hardy broadleaf ornamentals, as well as roses, lilacs, crape myrtle and any other deciduous plants that naturally lose leaves in the winter. These plants can use the extra time during fall and winter to develop a bigger root system to handle the summer heat. On the other hand, there are plants that are not cold hardy, but take the summer heat just fine. These plants are the ones that should not be planted late in the year, including cactus, succulents, citrus fruits, lantana and Tecoma (bells) varieties. However, fall is the best time for planting most plants in Southern Nevada. For more fall gardening tips, visit starnursery.com or drop by any Star Nursery Garden Center. idi Perez and Andeen Rose are the masterminds behind ADD Hair and Makeup. After teaming up in 2006, Rose and Perez have worked with a dazzling number of Hollywood stars, modeling agencies and magazines to create incredible looks for weddings, runways, photo shoots and more. Tim Hancock is a fashion photographer and creative director of DLXVRSN Media. He has done countless shoots of celebrities and red carpet events. ADD Hair and Makeup and Hancock are the go-to team for Las Vegas Woman magazine on various cover shoots and have a passion and talent for bringing the best composition together. Las Vegas Woman: How did you first become inspired to enter your field? Andeen Rose: I actually didn’t have a clear inspiration, unlike Didi. I was a 25-year-old mother and I decided to start doing nails. I attended the College of Hair Design Career in Salem, Oregon. George Powell and Bob inspired me to do hair. Didi Perez: When I was a child, I loved playing dress up. I always wanted to play salon. I grew up loving skin care and makeup. When I got older, I attended Westmore Academy of Cosmetic Arts in Los Angeles, and then I moved back to Las Vegas. Tim Hancock: During my college days, when I was attending school for architecture, I first got interested in photography. At the time, I had a job at an art gallery. That gallery allowed me to use what I was learning at school, and I began picking up photography as they had me take pictures of their art and their jewelry eight hours a day for their catalog. Now I’ve been working in photography for 12 years. LVW: What have your experiences been working with Tim, and Tim your experience working with ADD Hair and Makeup?

AR: I first met Tim for a shoot with Las Vegas Woman magazine. He does collaborate; it’s not just his way. At times, photographers own the set. They don’t want your input; you’re just there. Tim wants your input, and together you create this genius work of art. His energy and personality is lovely. DP: I love Tim. Tim brings a great vibe to any photo shoot. He’s on trend and has great vision. It’s good to work with people with great vision because it turns into a symbiotic relationship. I have a vision, he has a vision, and when we collaborate it just turns out beautifully. TH: Andeen and Didi are just a world-class hair and makeup team. They help me do my job even better. They are so professional. LVW: What kind of experiences have you had with celebrities in your work? AR: When you work with celebrities, at times you become friends with them, Mario and Courtney Lopez have become my friends. As well as Eva Longoria, she considers us her Las Vegas “glam squad.” DP: Recently, I worked with Lionel Richie for his residency here with Planet Hollywood. That was an amazing experience, as far as working with such a legend. Just being there was amazing. Eva Longoria, of course, she’s great; she’s Eva! Mario and Courtney Lopez are fabulous. TH: I do red carpet photography, so I’ve shot any celebrity that has come to Las Vegas, the Kardashians to Jennifer Lopez and on and on. LVW: ADD Hair and Makeup, you were hired to style Seth Grabel and Tammy Shaw’s wedding ceremony on the Grammy Awards. Tell us about that experience. AR: I met Tammy a long, long time ago at an event she hosted, and we grew into friends. Over the last four years, our friendship has

blossomed. When Tammy asked us to be part of her magical day, she knew she could trust us with confidentiality. DP: It was such an honor to be asked to do hair and makeup for them for the wedding. Being part of somebody’s special moment is simply wonderful. They are an amazing couple. LVW: Tim Hancock, what goes into a photo shoot? TH: When I shoot for a cover, I try to bring out the personality and character of the person we’re featuring and display them in a great light, as well as have a great photo. My company DLXVRSN Media is dedicated to that idea. We offer photography, web design, graphic design and branding. Our goal is to brand companies and bring them to life in the best way for that company. ADD Hair & Makeup and Tim Hancock have both been influences in how Las Vegas sees its stars. From behind the scenes to in front of the camera to post-shoot editing, they create extraordinary art. Visit addhairandmakeup.com and deluxe-version.com to find out more.

BRETT FREEDMAN: BEHIND THE BEAUTY ARTIST By Andeen Rose-Clark

B

rett Freedman is a makeup artist whose main client is Reba McEntire. Being in business with her is at the top of his priority list. In September, they will be promoting McEntire’s cosmetics line, Reba Beauty, on HSN and launching a brand-new item, a blush called Glow and Go. They started small with three lipsticks and have slowly grown from there. The products, which received 5-star ratings from customers, flew off the shelf. He was in Vegas throughout the summer, pulling double duty glamming Reba for her Caesar’s residency and Britney Spears across the street at Planet Hollywood. He is now with Lisa Kudrow helping her promote her appearance in the movie “Neighbors 2” with Seth Rogan. Freedman has also worked with Catherine Zeta-Jones, Amy Poehler, Kudrow, Taylor Swift, Sarah Silverman and Katy Perry for over 10 years.

BF: Growing up in Pittsburgh suburbia, I would do ‘Glamour Shot’ style shoots in my basement. Under more makeup than Joan Collins, my school gal pals were transformed. My sister would quip “I’m the only girl in town that asks her brother for makeup advice.” LVW: Tell me about your experience with the Reba, Brooks & Dunn residency in Las Vegas.

There’s a certain power in glamour.

On his own, he has created a new product, Brett Brows, now available at Sephora, other specialty shops and online (brettfreedman.com/pages/products). Las Vegas Woman magazine: How did Brett Brows come about?

BF: It seems serendipitous that I’m working here. Every couple of years growing up, our parents would bring us to Las Vegas, and so it seemed natural. It’s fantastic. Living in Caesars Palace is like living in a mall with everything just steps away. We have fun! LVW: How did you meet and begin to work for Reba?

BF: Reba and I met in 2002 on the set of a cover shoot for TV Guide magazine. Reba, Julie Bowen and Chris Maloney were being featured. Looking back, I can’t believe she asked me back. I was in a very minimal makeup phase. Reba looked like a 12 year old on the cover. Pretty, but lacked her signature glamour.

Brett Freedman: In my twenties I worked with a makeup artist that said I needed to learn to do brows. His insight was that not a lot of makeup artists do brows and it would be my point of difference. I agreed to let him do mine. Just a light ‘boy cleanup’ brow, and I was a convert! Later, when I had deals with everyone from Revlon to Pantene, I paid attention. Learning what it took create products and promote them.

LVW: Who is your biggest inspiration?

LVW: When did you first develop an interest in makeup?

LVW: What is your most treasured possession?

BF: My father, Jess Freedman. He was an artist and even attended art school, but it never came to fruition. But he made work fun and people really liked him. My dad had the classic motto, “Work hard and play harder.” He instilled that in me.

BF: The 1980s Revlon Book how-to book, “The Art of Beauty.” LVW: What is your newest product in your eyebrow line? BF: Laser Brow. It’s a cool-toned taupe pencil that is a makeup artist’s secret weapon. The low wax, high-pigmented formula provides a natural finish with long wear, and it comes with its own custom sharpener. Sarah Silverman loves the definition it gives. LVW: What is the one thing you always do on a job? BF: I always ask the actress or celebrity, “What don’t you like?” It becomes collaboration and together we create art. I always learn from my guests, since they know what they want to see. I do offer suggestions to enhance their look. LVW: What are some fun things to know about you? BF: I collect vintage makeup and love to hit the antiques shops. I don’t buy items all the time, but it inspires me and it’s fun. LVW: What words of inspiration would you share with younger artists? BF: Early in my career when I worked on models, they just sat there and never said a word. I knew the look and executed it. When I started to work with actresses and celebrities, they had input and my reaction was, “Oh, wow, the mannequins talk.” I knew I needed to pay attention. So listen and learn, truly hear what they are saying, even when there are no words. Know when to be quiet, and realize that you don’t need to connect with everyone and make it about you. Be on time, make certain your kit is clean, be prepared for anything and be professional! Andeen Rose-Clark is a celebrity hairstylist, as well as the owner/operator of ADD Hair & Make Up. Her credits have been seen on television, in national publications

and featured on red carpets around the world. She has styled Eva Longoria, Kendra Wilkinson-Baskett, Courtney Mazza-Lopez, Hope Solo, Jewel, Audrina Patridge, Nicole Scherzinger and many more, as well as local celebrities and media personalities. JAGUAR LAND ROVER LAS VEGAS The 2nd British Invasion By Rick Nelson

and Rover Las Vegas has proudly supported the community since 1999, making a name for itself as the leader in luxury auto sales in Las Vegas. The dealer has now introduced the addition of Jaguar cars to create Jaguar Land Rover Las Vegas. Jaguar originally serviced Las Vegas under Gaudin Jaguar and was recognized numerous times as a Pride of Jaguar winner, the highest award possible for a Jaguar dealership. Land Rover Las Vegas has been awarded the Pinnacle Club dealership, the highest award for Land Rover, eight out of the last nine years. As Jaguar Land Rover Las Vegas, Findlay Automotive plans on continuing the stellar performance from the past and bringing it into the future. Both Jaguar and Land Rover have historic, proud histories that continue on today. Jaguar is not only known as a leader in luxury, but also as a leader in performance. Jaguar has won the 24 Hours of Le Mans seven times in its history. Jaguars are also recognized for their beauty. The game-changing E-Type of the 1960s and ’70s was recognized by Enzo Ferrari as “the most beautiful car ever made.”

All of those characteristics are still visible in their award-winning vehicles today. From the regal and luxurious XJ to the all-new sporty F-Pace, Jaguar’s first crossover vehicle ever, they have a commanding view into the future. The XJ being Jaguar’s flagship model, it is the ideal vehicle to shuttle yourself between home and the golf course. With the addition of the F-Pace, the race-car driver at heart now has a vehicle to cruise down Las Vegas Boulevard with everyone watching in awe. Jaguar is also very excited to have introduced the new XE model to its lineup. This vehicle has made a splash with its reintroduction into the small premium sedan market. The XF, which is its premium midsize sedan, blends both practicality and luxury flawlessly to make the daily commute much more exciting. The final model in the Jaguar lineup is the highly praised F-Type. With many different engine choices ranging from a potent supercharged V6 to a powerful supercharged V8, producing 575 horsepower, there will be one question an owner will ask: “How quickly do I want to get to my destination?” Jaguar Land Rover Las Vegas is the continuation of success from a singular Land Rover Center into the leader for vehicle needs in the Southern Nevada area. The dealership thanks the community for its continued support with an exciting future for the combination of Jaguar and Land Rover. Jaguar Land Rover Las Vegas 5255 W. DATING IN THE O

ut in the dating scene and got your profile up on one of the many dating sites? It may be time for you consider that you are out of touch with the current culture of dating. If you go to a singles bar, you may notice that many of the patrons are looking at their phones. They may be checking email (if they have a job), but it’s more likely they are checking out a dating app on their phone to see who is available to them. These apps have a photo of the person who is putting him or herself out as available, and may include a profile, information about who they are and what they like. One can swipe right or left to vote yes or no for attracted to or not on apps like Tinder, which is a common and efficient service for this new kind of speed dating. If your attractions match the attractions of the person being viewed, then you will have access to exchange text messages and may decide to meet after a bit of chatting through the app. Therapists and social scientists have predicted the apocalypse in dating and mating as being heralded by these apps, but they are here to stay. If you are single, apps are bound to become part of your dating repertoire.

MOBILE APP AGE By Tiger Devore, Ph.D.

Yes, your profile photo is important since it is all your potential partners will see before they swipe yes or no. It had better be good, and it had better be recent. Misrepresentation of your actual appearance is a major faux pas in this digital culture. Many of your fellow dating app users will ask for Skype or FaceTime meetings to see if you are real before they actually meet you, so you will be shamed if you don’t live up to your profile pic. Profile pics can be anything from a simple selfie to a well-lit photo of your body in a swimsuit, so think about what you want to advertise to your dating population. Do you want to represent yourself as a distinguished businessperson, someone who travels to foreign capitals, a person who is passionate about fill-in-the-blank (such as horses or cats or dogs or children) or a gym rat (with the body to show off)? All of these choices can change whom you connect with on the basis of the appeal they are looking for and can judge within a few seconds of looking at your photo. You do need to put effort into writing your profile and including information about yourself that you hope will guide a potential mate your way. While that effort will occasionally make a difference, studies show that no matter how compatible two people may be, if the attraction isn’t there the relationship will not go very far. These apps can become addictive, as exciting as a video game and sexually titillating in themselves. You can approach people on the app that you might never approach in person, and take the chance of them being interested in you, without fear of the sting of rejection that might be felt when refused in person. This digital culture has a language all its own, and it takes getting used to some of the abbreviations that you will encounter. As with all things digital, if you are really confused, ask someone a generation or two younger than you to explain it. Still, it is worth the effort and you might find love this way.

24/7 HEALTHCARE FOR A 24/7 TOWN How telemedicine is making health care convenient By Meghan Bailey led to the many consumer-based telemedicine platforms on which you can see a doctor for a flat fee. Also, most insurance plans are adopting a telemedicine benefit, which is validating this form of access and can help keep people healthy and out of the hospital. More than half of millennials don’t have a primary care doctor. Most of the time they do not see a medical professional for their health concerns. Telemedicine is allowing those who do not have an established primary care provider to access care quickly and conveniently. Telemedicine is eliminating barriers and improving access to care. It’s the new way to access medical care for everyday needs, all while not having to take time off work, or drive to see a doctor when you don’t feel like getting out of your pajamas.

A

ll too often, many people live with a lingering symptom, whether it is a cough that has lasted too long or a rash that won’t go away. You know that you should have it checked by a medical professional, but the thought of taking a day off of work, waiting in an office watching Netflix—only to be called in at a pivotal moment in the show—sounds terrible enough to stick it out, but sticking it out could cause a long-term problem. That cough could turn into phenomena; that rash could be a sign of a serious issue. But what immediate options do you have besides going to the emergency room? That option is telemedicine and its available 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Telemedicine is not a separate medical specialty, but an extension of care that you can utilize in the convenience of your home to help combat common health symptoms. The field of telemedicine isn’t a new concept; in fact, doctors have been using it for years. No matter your geographical location. You can now see a doctor

face-to-face on your smartphone or computer. Just like in person, the medical professional can assess through a prescreening health assessment prior to your visit, check for swollen glands, sore throats and other symptoms, and prescribe antibiotics if needed. Telemedicine is also advancing at a rapid rate. “The technology that telemedicine has is beyond what anyone could have imagined just five years ago,” said Dr. Warren Volker. “Today, patients can be sent home with remote monitoring tools to help regulate a chronic condition, and families can be armed with tools that plug into their computer to help pediatricians look in a child’s ears or throat. The rise of convenience and ability to deliver a better patient experience is one of the many reasons why telemedicine is here to stay.” Society’s need for faster and more convenient care, combined with the shortage of medical professionals, especially primary care providers, has

ith breast cancer awareness month in October, Las Vegas Woman magazine is proud to feature the female physicians of Desert Radiology. Desert Radiology has taken a leadership role in early detection, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, a disease that is expected to affect approximately 250,000 women in the United States in 2016, and is proud of their long-standing partnership with Susan G. Komen Nevada. Desert Radiology’s role is exemplified by their investment in the latest technology such as the 3D Mammogram, combined with an extensive team of radiologists that work hand-in-hand with the physicians of Southern Nevada. There have been many developments in the detection of breast cancer in the last decade, but one of the clearest advancements is the availability of 3D mammography. Desert Radiology is a leader in the use of this cutting edge technology and wants all women to be aware that they have the option to get the most accurate, highest resolution mammography available in the market. 3D mammography is a process that allows doctors to examine breast tissue one layer at a time. The equipment uses high-powered computing to convert digital breast images into a stack of very thin layers or “slices” —building what is essentially a “3-dimensional mammogram”. A good analogy for 3D mammography is like thinking of the pages in a book. Looking down at the cover, one cannot see all of the pages but open it up and one can go through the entire book page-by-page to see everything between the covers. 3D mammography is designed with the

same concept in mind. The technology uses very low X-ray energy to reduce radiation exposure to below the FDA guidelines. Aside from reducing callback rates by up to 40 percent, 3D exams have proved to find more invasive cancers earlier than conventional 2D mammography. This is key since with early detection the five-year survival rate is almost 100 percent. 3D mammography is rapidly demonstrating to be the most effective way to offer every woman a better chance of survival, and Desert Radiology is there to provide this lifesaving diagnostic procedure. With Desert Radiology since 2006, Dr. Lisa Wong can truly empathize with the fight against breast cancer and the importance of early detection. She is a breast cancer survivor and has been cancerfree for five years. Her gynecologist ordered a screening mammogram at Desert Radiology, and the result was abnormal. A biopsy confirmed she had cancer. “It was a surreal experience to be a patient where I work, and I’m so glad everything was caught at an early stage,” Dr. Wong said. Understanding the diagnostic process as both a doctor and patient, she is grateful to be healthy and to experience the satisfaction of continuing her work as a pediatric radiologist. Dr. Wong has always been passionate about science, and in college her favorite class was parasitology, the study of parasites. “It was so interesting, and it really sparked my interest in medicine. I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives, so a career in the medical field was the perfect choice for me,” she said. Originally planning to become a pediatrician, she changed specialties after completing a fascinating

undergraduate studies at the Pennsylvania State University and received her medical degree from University of Nevada School of Medicine, graduating Alpha Omega Alpha. After obtaining her medical degree, she completed her residency and fellowship at Stanford University Medical Center. She had always been interested in the sciences and originally planned on pursuing a doctorate in molecular biology. Desiring to make more immediate clinical impact, she gravitated to the field of medicine. During medical school, Dr. Mazzu discovered the specialty of radiology and was mentored by former radiologists in the Desert Radiology practice, many of whom serve as adjunct clinical faculty with the School of Medicine. She returned to Las Vegas and joined the practice that nurtured her. Ultimately, she was appointed Chief of the Department of Radiology at University Medical Center. This was a natural fit for this local student turned physician. At UMC, she works closely with board members, administration and medical staff and is pleased to be a part of the excellent healthcare offered by Desert Radiology and the hospital. “Radiology is a compelling field, one that touches many facets of medicine,” she explained. “Utilizing our powerful technology, we are involved in diagnosis of a vast spectrum of medical conditions ranging from neurological disorders, orthopedic injuries to general medical problems. We also contribute greatly to patient care performing interventional and therapeutic procedures. Radiologists help to tie it all together”. Recently, Dr. Mazzu was appointed as a member of the Community Advisory Board to the new and upcoming UNLV School of Medicine. The future school will be a fullscale, four-year medical school aiming to improve access to high-quality healthcare and generate high-level clinical and specialty care in our community. As a member of the board, Dr. Mazzu works with other community leaders in providing guidance and direction to the school of medicine. Dr. Gabaeff, diagnostic radiologist and

As a teenager, Dr. Gabaeff’s father became ill with coronary artery disease. She researched the medical literature to learn as much as she could about the disease process. It was his illness that served as a catalyst to follow in his footsteps and become a physician, incorporating her love of science with the human element of medicine. hard work of her mother-in-law, a retired obstetrician/gynecologist.

Dr. Gabaeff chose Neuroradiology as her specialty due to interest in MRI and its role in brain and spine imaging, and inspiration from her mentors in residency. “Neuroradiology involves a vast array of diseases, including stroke imaging, head trauma, brain tumor imaging and spinal disease.”

As a child, Dr. Vyas enjoyed reading mystery novels and solving puzzles. “Being a radiologist is something like being a medical detective,” she explained. “We are given an image, asked to put the clues together and come up with a diagnosis for the patient.”

Being a radiologist is something like being a medical detective... We are given an image, asked to put the clues together and come up with a diagnosis for the patient. Dr. Gabaeff is passionate about the advances that are being made in diagnostic imaging technology. Desert Radiology offers the latest and most advanced 3T MRI available, the Siemens MAGNETOM Skyra 3T MRI. This state-of-the-art MRI offers a larger 70 cm open bore design for claustrophobic patients, as well as advanced noise reduction for a quieter more comfortable overall patient experience. A 3T MRI is twice as strong as older MRIs, providing increased speed and detail, producing brilliant image quality. Dr. Vyas subspecializes in pediatric radiology and has been a part of the Desert Radiology family since 2009. She served as Assistant Professor of Pediatric Radiology at the University of Rochester, NY for 3 years before moving to Las Vegas. Desert Radiology presented the opportunity to utilize her expertise in the care of children in the valley. At the same time, it allowed her to maintain her skills to practice the breadth and scope of the vast field of general radiology. Besides the warm weather, what drew her and her husband (also a practicing physician) here was the cosmopolitan nature of Las Vegas. She says, “There is real diversity in this city and a culture of progressiveness”. Born and raised in Mumbai, India; Dr. Vyas draws inspiration from her family. “My parents instilled a strong sense of discipline, work ethic and always led by example”. She is also inspired by the perseverance and

As a mother of three, she finds her position very fulfilling working with children of all ages. She is passionate about reducing radiation exposure in children during medical procedures and exams. “We are often consulted by referring physicians about the best test for a clinical scenario. My over-riding concern is to limit the medical over-exposure of children to x-rays while providing optimal patient care. Pulsed fluoroscopy has been a boon in this regard where short bursts of X-rays are used instead of a continuous flow of radiation to obtain images. We offer pulsed fluoroscopy for our littlest patients at almost all of our clinics”. Dr. Vyas also recommends that parents obtain as much information on what the exact examination or procedure will entail beforehand and talk to their child about it. This can alleviate anxiety associated with interacting with strangers and make for a better overall experience for the child. Through Desert Radiology’s exclusive partnerships with The Valley Health System hospitals, University Medical Center and Boulder City Hospital, Dr. Vyas has been contributing her expertise in the care of pediatric patients at multiple area hospitals. Whether in the hospital or at one of Desert Radiology’s seven imaging centers, Dr. Vyas remains committed to providing compassionate high-quality imaging services in Las Vegas. This year marks Desert Radiology’s 50th anniversary serving the Southern Nevada community. Since it’s founding in 1966, Desert Radiology has grown to become the community’s chief resource for diagnostic imaging. Whether fighting a disease like breast cancer, or working with a physician in diagnosing an illness, patients can rely on the support they will get from the caring physicians at Desert Radiology. The experience and cutting edge technology provides the most innovative care and cancer detection available. THE EGG DONOR OPTION AT RED ROCK FERTILITY CENTER A HELPFUL ALTERNATIVE FOR STARTING A FAMILY

R

ed Rock Fertility Center is focused on its mission to help couples succeed in their wish to become a family. Nothing makes Dr. Eva Littman, RRFC founder and practice director, happier than welcoming these very wanted new babies into the world. Sometimes, there are significant obstacles in a couple’s quest to conceive. For conception to occur, a woman must produce healthy and robust eggs. Because human beings are still biologically programmed to reproduce at fairly young ages, for women over 40, egg production is often compromised. In other cases, the problem might be damage from previous gynecological procedures or from treatments for serious diseases like cancer. It’s a fact that some women simply produce eggs that are not as viable as they need to be for successful fertilization. Red Rock Fertility Center can offer these couples new hope and a very high degree of likely success with its innovative donor egg program. This program is carefully structured to ensure the best possible results, and presents several very important advantages. The sperm of the male partner fertilizes the eggs. The female partner carries the baby and bonds naturally with her baby during her pregnancy. Donor eggs also allow male LGBT couples to realize their dreams of family with help both from donor eggs and a gestational carrier. Red Rock Fertility Center has developed its egg donor program with great sensitivity and with all the safeguards couples need to be comfortable and enthusiastic about their choices. Each couple chooses from an extensive list of prescreened potential donors, with each of these potential donors presenting a 12-page profile detailing all her important specifics. These include a full medical and reproductive history and a complete outline of the donor’s ethnic and family background. In the donor profile, RRFC patients also learn about the donor’s education level, professional and personal skills, religious background, temperament and personality. The next characteristics in the profile are physical and contain information both from the donor and from her family, which includes her parents, siblings and grandparents. These genetic characteristics include donor eye color, shape and size, facial features, height and weight, and hair color, type and fullness, as well as hair color as a child. A dental history further fills out the complete genetic profile. Dr. Littman also understands that it’s critical for patients to understand the strength of the RRFC donor pool itself. Usually, egg donors are women in their early 20s. Women from a wide variety of social, ethnic and educational backgrounds make the decision to become egg donors. Many are professionals, with occupations across a broad spectrum, and most are motivated to become donors because of a strong wish to help others. All potential donors are personally interviewed and screened by Dr. Littman and Red Rock Fertility Center’s experienced staff. The rigorous selection process helps to ensure the best possible pool of donors and the most positive results for RRFC patients.

To protect everyone’s privacy, all donors are anonymous, and all personal information for donor egg recipients is strictly confidential. Neither party knows any identifying details about the other, and full legal safeguards and protections are in place.

Once patients have selected a donor, the next step is fertilizing the eggs. This process is the same as it is for a standard in vitro fertilization, or IVF, pregnancy. First, the donor eggs need to be harvested at the correct time in the donor’s menstrual cycle. The typical donor cycle results in the retrieval of 12 to 18 healthy eggs. The eggs are

a wide variety of resources to support their mental and physical health during the treatment process. These include massage therapy, acupuncture options and the overall personal approach that Dr. Littman has pioneered.

“I love working with patients who’ve all but given up on the dream of becoming a family. Helping them is my biggest challenge and provides the greatest rewards in my practice. Every year, at our annual RRFC picnic, I see so many big smiles on so happy many faces. These are moms, dads, darling babies and even siblings,” Dr. Littman said. “ I can’t think of anything more rewarding than that.”

She also knows that all families worry about the financial part of treatment. Dr. Littman and her staff are firmly committed to full disclosure. Each patient, and their supporting partner, is fully aware of costs ahead of time, which are outlined clearly with no hidden or unexpected charges. Before treatment begins, her staff does exhaustive due diligence to explore all possible insurance coverage and benefits. Dr. Littman makes sure that her patients have accessible and reasonable payment options as they begin the journey toward parenthood.

RRFC boasts the very latest in reproductive technology. It was the first clinic in Southern Nevada to have a certified IVF clean room, an innovation that produces air, which is 166,000 times more pure and clean than ordinary outside air. This environment is critical for producing high pregnancy success rates. RRFC also uses the latest Saturn Laser, which is invaluable for procedures on the embryos to minimize damage and reduce time outside of the incubators, also leading to increased success rates so important with donor eggs. Because of Dr. Littman’s emphasis on stress reduction and a positive patient experience, RRFC provides a spa-like environment. Patients have access to

“One thing I’ve really learned in my practice is that no one fertility solution works for everyone,” Dr. Littman said. “Our donor egg program provides a sensitive and affirming way for many people to start a family. Therefore, I’m committed to making it the very best program available.” For more information, visit redrockfertility.com or call 702.712.4249.

He also teaches those who are wearing contact lenses for the first time how to insert and remove the lens as well as how to properly care for the contact lenses. Don’t forget to protect eyes with sunglasses. Sunglasses with full UV coverage protect the eyelids, the eye and surrounding skin from sun damage, and decrease risk of skin cancer. When wearing contact lenses, sunglasses also help block the wind and debris from eyes. This helps reduce dry contact lenses and increases comfort. Trendsetter Eyewear’s optical boutique has a large selection of designer sunglasses in the latest fashion that will protect eyes and contact lenses.

yeglasses are more than a way to correct vision. Eyewear has become a fashion statement and accessory to create an image. But along with looking good, glasses must properly fit for vision correction, as well as framing the face. A trained optician is vital to any practice for vision and Grady “Chip” Williams Jr. is the master optician at Trendsetter Eyewear. As an optician, he fills the prescription for contacts and eyewear. Williams began working in eyewear as a teenager and cultivated his skills as an optician throughout the years. His father is an optometrist and Williams gained experience working with him in the practice.

A veteran, Williams was a medic and corpsman while serving in the U.S. Navy. He then transitioned as a medic for an ambulance service in civilian life. Williams changed careers and return to optics since he felt this is what he does best. As for finding the right frames, “Looks are a matter of preference and opinion,” Williams stated. “I give my opinion and I realize styles and fashion change over time.” He makes certain the frames are not too big or too small to fit the proportion of the face. Trendsetter Eyewear features a hand-selected collection of designer frames. Williams monitors the collection to ensure there is a variety of styles and sizes for all ages to create a selection of choices. MARIA KELLER, M.D., FACOG aria Keller, M.D., FACOG, is a board certified gynecologist who has practiced in Southern Nevada since 2003. She divides herself between two practices, GyneCare and LiveAgelessly.

The first in her family to go to a university, Dr. Keller attended the University of California at Los Angeles for her undergraduate degree, received her medical degree at the University of Illinois, and completed her residency training in OB/GYN at the Martin Luther King Drew Medical Center in Los Angeles. “This was the one specialty of medicine where I could really help people resolve their health problems,” Dr. Keller explained. “In medical school a mentor told me I had to decide whether I wanted to heal with pills (medication) or steel (surgery). OB/GYN allowed me the ability to do both, however, as I have gained knowledge and expertise in understanding hormones, I find that I do not have to do surgery as often.” Dr. Keller started to explore the benefits of bioidentical hormones in 2008 as some of her patients were doing much better on them than on the hormones she had prescribed to them. Soon after, her mother was diagnosed with cancer and she had questions about the hormone she was using. After prescribing synthetic hormone medications to her mother for years, Dr. Keller became concerned about the interaction of foreign synthetic hormones in the body and the possible link to cancer. “I don’t want to blindly prescribe medications for a variety of symptoms brought on by hormone deficiency,” she said. “I was trained in residency to only ask two questions: ‘Are you having hot flashes?’ and ‘Do you have a uterus?’ ” Hormonal decline can cause the symptoms that are treated by pharmaceutical drugs, but Dr. Keller found that often the side effects of the medications were worse than the symptoms, and the medications did not alleviate all of her patient’s symptoms. After taking her first course in bioidentical hormones and seeing her patients’ remarkable improvement on them, she was completely transformed as a physician. She began treating women with loss of sexual desire issues with testosterone and her medical practice was changed forever. LiveAgelessly was created as a concept of getting older, without feeling older, to live agelessly. Dr. Keller is also very excited about her new addition to her practice, ThermiVa. This is a cosmetic non-surgical, non-hormonal procedure for vaginal rejuvenation with same-day results. ThermiVa improves collagen production in the vagina using radiofrequency. The benefits include significant improvement with vaginal dryness by improving vaginal lubrication, improvement of mild symptoms of urinary incontinence (leakage of urine), improved sensitivity inside the vagina making intercourse more pleasurable and improved strength of the pelvic floor, which makes the vagina tighter; it also helps improve the outward appearance of the vulva. GyneCare is the new name of her gynecology practice and is currently accepting new patients. LiveAgelessly is an anti-aging clinic that treats hormonal decline with bioidentical hormones and vitamins and supplements in both women and men.

NEW IMAGE ADVANCED LASER SKIN CENTER

D

MICHAEL S. MALL, M.D., MEDICAL CONCIERGE

r. Michael Mall is passionate about his concierge primary care medical practice and cosmetic New Image Advanced Laser Skin Center. His philosophy of providing the best service extends to his staff, who also feel the same about their clients. People respond to his ability to treat the entire person rather than just a part of them, with his special gift to be empathetic and compassionate, with a sense of objectivity to evaluate them. In fact, New Image Advanced Laser Skin Center and his concierge primary care medical practice celebrated 10 years in August with plans to expand the facility. There are other projects in the future as well, and the practice continues to grow. “We build lasting relationships,” Dr. Mall said. “It is not just about coming in, get a service and leave. We establish a connection and create a relationship so we can take care of clients for the rest of their lives. My aestheticians are amazing. We have clients coming in since 2007, since they know and trust us. This is one of the most important aspects of my practice.” All of his staff treat everyone with kindness, respect and compassion and it is obvious they all enjoy being there. Practicing concierge primary care, he sees no more than 600 total patients. Dr. Mall’s patients enjoy office visits that average 30 minutes in length so there is sufficient time to discuss the patient’s needs and make a plan of action. More importantly, the focus can be on preventative care, ensuring patients stay well with proper counseling regarding care from nutrition to activity. As for devoting himself to concierge primary care medical practice, “In order to provide very personalized care that truly made a difference to my patients’ care and health, I transitioned to a concierge model of care in 2006,” Dr. Mall explained. Concierge primary care medical is membership-based and is an affordable investment in a person’s health care. “The cosmetic portion of my practice grew from my concierge patients feeling better, but also wanting to look better to match how they felt. That blossomed into a full-service practice where I became the medical director,” Dr. Mall said. It is not just about vanity. Scarring and other problems with the skin can make a person feel self-conscious and affect them dramatically in social settings. Even performers have troubled skin and with treatment can perform better professionally as well as enjoy a more active personal life. He also believes in educating his patients on the various services and procedures offered. For example, a person does not come in for Botox, get stuck with a needle and leave. Along with informing the client about the effects of Botox, Dr. Mall establishes a rapport with that person. He wants to determine if this is the best approach for them, what else does the patient need and what other services can be offered to give the client the best experience possible with great results. “It is always about assessing

the patient every time they come in. There are different procedures and treatments to keep people looking as good as possible,” he said. A cutting-edge treatment is J-Plasma, much like a second-generation CO2 laser, which totally resurfaces the entire face. General anesthesia is not needed and there is no pain afterward. It is a face lift with skin resurfacing done at the same time. In many cases, it is almost “erasing” 20 years from a person’s face, even when the face is discolored and wrinkled, including drooping eyelids and forehead. There is some downtime when a person has to remain in their home for seven to 10 days, the skin is pink and there is washing of the area several times a day. This is revolutionary because this is not surgery. In the past, a plastic surgeon would stretch the skin to make it look younger. However, this is brand-new skin growing with no color or brown spots or broken veins and is tight underneath the top layer. The results are amazing without the drawbacks of plastic surgery. New Image Advanced Laser Skin Center is one of the few full-service laser centers offering every category of laser treatments, including superficial treatment for brown spots, wrinkles and loose skin, and contouring body fat, including bra fat and love handles. Other treatments include hair removal, skin tightening, acne treatments, fractional resurfacing treatments, PRP/stem cell treatments, body contouring, fillers and Botox. The advantages of these modalities are not only convenience, but patients also experience little or no downtime. In some instances, laser treatments can be more cost-effective, too. Most important, Dr. Mall and his staff are treated by their own equipment and procedures. “I practice what I preach. I have always tried the lasers on myself to truly experience how they work and how the treatment feels before, during and afterwards. I want my clients to know that if I offer it, I have tried it first,” he explained. “I want to earn and keep the trust of my patients. It is of utmost importance to me.” With such a frenetic schedule, it is a necessity for Dr. Mall to keep himself in optimal shape. “I know that in order to coach my patients on lifestyle changes and optimizing their health and quality of life that I need to be that example and live that life in order to have an impact on them,” he said. He finds that his patients who are part of his concierge primary care medical practice or clients who come to New Image really care about their health. Dr. Mall emphasizes that it is affordable for anyone who purchases a coffee every day or goes to the movies once a week. Good health care is an important asset as well as being an important part in a person’s quality of life. Dr. Mall is proud to be at the forefront of this medical trend and make a difference in people’s lives.

SUNRISE HOSPITAL & MEDICAL CENTER / SUNRISE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

S

SARAH SAULS, RN, BSN, OCN

arah Sauls is a pediatric oncology nurse at Sunrise Children’s Hospital, part of an interdisciplinary team dedicated to providing excellent healthcare to meet the needs of its patients and community. Sauls has always wanted to be a nurse and work with kids. After having the opportunity to work in a pediatric oncology clinic during nursing school, she knew this was her calling in life. “There are definitely hard days that can tug at your heart,” she said. “But kids are strong, resilient and inspiring. They still play, laugh and joke around, even during treatment.” After a failed pregnancy in late 2012, Sauls was ready to try again, but began having a dull ache in her left breast. Wanting to be extra cautious, she asked her gynecologist for a breast ultrasound. The test results found a small mass, but because of her age she was told not to worry, and given the green light to try to get pregnant again. Still unsure, she asked to see a specialist. Following a biopsy, she was diagnosed on Feb. 6, 2014, with invasive ductal carcinoma, a form of breast cancer. As she was only 27 years old at the time and had no history of breast cancer in her family, this was a surprise. “I was starting to feel crazy, and the diagnosis was somewhat of a relief. At least I knew what was causing the pain,” she said. She started chemo on Feb. 14, 2014. Sauls and her husband decided to start treatment as soon as possible, instead of freezing any eggs, because of the tumor size and location. “If we chose to freeze any eggs or embryos, I would have to wait weeks before I could begin chemo. I was afraid of the cancer spreading. It was a tough decision,” Sauls said. She also found out that she carries a genetic mutation, BRCA2, and may be associated with the history of prostate cancer on her father’s side. It is important for people to understand how their family history can predispose them to other types of cancer. “I feel having cancer has made me a better nurse; I can relate to what my patients are going through,” she said. Even with her advanced training as an oncology nurse, “It was still scary for me,” she explained. “But some of the kids I work with don’t know life without cancer. Seeing how strong they are, inspired me more than they’ll ever know.” After treatment, including chemo, bilateral mastectomy, radiation and prophylactic ovary removal, she became a peer leader for a survivor support group. “I want to help others by letting them know they’re not alone in this fight,” she said. Sauls is the peer leader for the young survivor support group that meets the second Wednesday of every month at the Breast Center at Sunrise. DR. LAURIE’S EXCEPTIONAL DENTISTRY

LAURIE BLOCH-JOHNSON, DMD D

r. Laurie Bloch-Johnson has been practicing for over 30 years creating more than just beautiful smiles; she has developed her practice using a totally different approach that one might not expect at a dentist’s office. Her first rule is that she only sees one patient at a time. The initial visit takes about 90 minutes, and Dr. Laurie spends about 45 minutes with each of her patients. Investing that much time and detail here saves time and allows the patients to make sure that Dr. Laurie is the best possible fit. She discusses what the examination has shown, presents options and explains the next steps. Patients can see exactly what is going on in their mouths, and make an informed choice on how they want to proceed. The timeframe for the ideal treatment can be adjusted to fit the patient’s schedule and budget. Dr. Laurie offers this consultation as the best way to educate people about what is available to help them get a healthy smile that will last. During the initial visit, there is an examination of the mouth, teeth, jaw joints (TMJ) and masticatory muscles. One of the many uses for the 42-inch television in each exam room is that, as a camera takes photos of the mouth, the patient can see exactly what Dr. Laurie sees with magnifying glasses. Dr. Laurie’s Exceptional Dentistry is a full-service dental practice that includes full mouth reconstruction, dental implants, TMJ disorder, including treatment for snoring, treatment for migraines, headaches caused from bite problems, veneers and periodontal laser management. State-of-the-art dental technology allows her practice to deliver a more accurate and detailed diagnosis. Some of the different types of technology include digital X-rays, intra-oral cameras, computerized bite analysis, and lasers for soft and hard tissue applications. Dr. Laurie’s Exceptional Dentistry offers smile design, smile makeover, dental facelifts, instant orthodontics, porcelain veneers, crowns inlays and onlays, tooth bonding, tooth-colored fillings, porcelain fillings, teeth whitening and gum contouring. She has worked with her master dental ceramist for almost 20 years, and he is available for custom shading and discussing the process with clients. Dr. Laurie is passionate about dentistry and absolutely loves her job. In fact, she is one of the most senior instructors at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies where she teaches dentists from all over the world. Her dental practice is a model for these dentists to visit and see the latest technology in use. LAS VEGAS LASER & LIPO

D

r. Edward Zimmerman of Las Vegas Laser & Lipo has created a culture of taking care of people as well as staying current with the newest methods and equipment. Las Vegas Laser & Lipo continues to introduce new techniques and technologies to its clients. Las Vegas Laser & Lipo became the first to offer the new Cynosure SculpSure for non-surgical, body contouring. Since acquiring the machine at the beginning of the year, the practice has performed over 500 procedures with SculpSure. Instead of freezing fat cells like CoolSculpting that the practice also offers, the cells are now heated to permanently kill them. This treatment takes only 25 minutes instead of the 60 minutes required to freeze fat cells and is more comfortable for the patient. According to Dr. Z (as he is called), the final results could be even more effective. “The photons of light spread through the targeted tissue and give a smooth transition from the treated to the untreated zone,” Dr. Z explained. “The lasers are literally strapped flat to the treatment area, versus positioning

an applicator where the tissue will be sucked up into the applicator for freezing. Most people are more comfortable with warmth than with cold. Twenty percent or more of the fat cells in the treatment area die and are absorbed by the body with each treatment to an area. This is like a noninvasive liposuction. Once the fat cells die, they’re gone for good.” Another innovation is injecting a tissue growth activator called Sculptra, off label, to enhance the buttocks and help the appearance of cellulite. Originally approved for treatment of HIV positive individuals with atrophy of the cheeks of the face, a variation is now used for the cheeks of the derriere. “It is great for those who would like to have some junk in the trunk,” Dr. Z explained. “It is an alternative to buttocks implants for patients who don’t have enough fat to shift to the area. The FDA granted Sculptra a two-year duration when injected in the face, but in the derriere, it could last even longer.” The procedure is effective for those who have deflated buttocks due to time and heredity,

FA L L 2 0 1 6

and can be repeated for further inflation maintain enhancement. With Sculptra, the client will generate their own tissue and keep their figure for years. PureGraft technology advances the ability to safely use one’s own fat cells, harvested in Las Vegas Laser & Lipo’s nationally accredited, state licensed operating room, to increase volume, symmetry and contours in other areas. “We have been very successful over the past decade,

DR. EDWARD ZIMMERMAN utilizing a number of different technologies to clean and increasingly purify the fat, so it has more longevity and less inflammation during the healing phase. Fat grafting with your own fat can be used to naturally restore and enhance the breasts without the scars of traditional breast augmentation. Fat is great for contouring and enlarging the butt too,” he said. How about breast reduction sans the traditional surgical scars or reduction mastepexy? Dr. Z performs twilight sedation, liposclupting for women looking to improve symmetry and reduce the size of their breasts. According to Dr. Z, the women seeking this treatment are usually older, “and don’t feel the need to be blessed with so much baggage on their shoulders. You can selectively sculpt the breast to decrease side boob while preserving the cleavage.” Dr. Z uses painless testing to determine the volume of each breast and enhance symmetry. Liposculpting is minimally invasive with small, hidden insertions sites. Nipple sensation can be improved using plateletrich plasma from the patient to help to reinvigorate the sensation and vitality of the area.

New injection techniques have been developed to make it a better experience for the patient with less discomfort, swelling and bruising and more accuracy. Las Vegas Laser & Lipo is also the first practice in Las Vegas to introduce and train other physicians to insert Polydioxanone (PDO) dissolvable sutures (threads) to smooth and re-drape skin anywhere on the body. This material has been used for decades to close tissue in surgery. The sutures are placed very similar to derma-fillers, so they are minimally invasive. Their effect lasts months, even a year, and can be enhanced or repeated as desired.

It is great for those who would like to have some junk in the trunk.

Las Vegas Laser & Lipo continues to be at the forefront of liquid face-lifting. Dr. Z is one of the 50 practices in the world offering BellaDiamond injectors. Bellafill is the first and only FDA filler to be approved for five-year duration.

Specialties: Cosmetic Surgery

All of these procedures are done in the modern, clean, state-licensed, nationally accredited Las Vegas Laser & Lipo office and surgical facility, under local or light conscious sedation (twilight). General anesthesia is not required, and while there is recovery time, it is generally not as lengthy as in previous years.

Dr. Z teaches nationally and internationally with passion and vigor. He is an examiner for the American Board of Laser Surgery, a member of the board of trustees for the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and a clinical faculty member of Touro University School of Osteopathic Medicine. Along with a caring staff, Dr. Z is excited about the future of aesthetic medicine and delivering it with dedication and safety at Las Vegas Laser & Lipo.

Your Medical Questions, Answered WellHealth Medical Group is an integrated network of doctors, nurses and medical specialists ready to provide the best in healthcare. While regular checkups are recommended, information is also important to maintaining overall good health.

JENNIFER WAGNER CERTIFIED NURSE MIDWIFE

JAY HSU, M.D., CARDIOLOGY

YARINI QUEZADA, M.D., FACOG, UROGYNECOLOGY

Do you have to be pregnant to seek care from a midwife?

I’ve read that you can experience chest pain without it being a heart attack. How do you know the difference?

As women age, will we all experience issues or conditions where we will need to see an urogynecologist?

Traditionally, chest pain related to heart disease was described as a pressure or heavy sensation in the left- or mid-portion of the chest, associated with nausea, shortness of breath, and/or diaphoresis with radiation to the jaw or arm. However, 70 percent of women and diabetics may not have chest pain at all, but may have only a portion of the typical symptoms, like arm pain or shortness of breath. Additionally, pains may not be cardiac at all, such as chest pain from muscular spasms, heartburn or even stress. This is a big topic that requires more discussion, so talk to a medical professional if you are concerned about cardiac chest pain.

Not necessarily. Not all women experience symptoms requiring attention from an urogynecologist. However, when you have questions or concerns, you should always ask your general gynecologist during your annual visit.

No, pregnancy is just one reason to see a midwife. A midwife can also see women for gynecological needs such as pap smears, vaginal infections, pelvic pain, breast concerns, contraception, STD testing and other concerns. How does a midwife differ from a traditional OB-GYN? Midwives differ from OB-GYNs in their approach to providing care. With nursing as a background, midwives approach healthcare holistically, recognizing that there is more to health than disease processes. Midwives also focus on educating patients so they can make informed decisions about their health. Can a midwife see gynecological needs?

adolescents

for

Yes, midwives can care for adolescents for their gynecological needs including, but not limited to, birth control appointments, STD testing, pelvic pain or irregular periods.

What is the risk of a heart disease if a parent or grandparent had an open-heart surgery? Family history of heart disease does increase your risk, but we generally look at your immediate family members (parents, siblings) to see if they have had heart issues at a young age, men under 55 years of age and women under 65 years of age. However, this is only one variable that adds risk to each individual in calculating chances of developing heart disease. Other variables include history of tobacco use, diabetes, elevated blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, obesity and exercise habits. These risk factors help determine how your medical team recommends therapies like aspirin, stress testing for monitoring and cholesterol targets.

What is the No. 1 condition woman suffer with that you wish you could tell them there are options? Urinary incontinence is a condition, which affects women, and most suffer from in silence because they feel these symptoms come with age. There are medical and surgical treatments available for the management and treatment of urinary incontinence. What treatment options does a woman have with prolapse? There are a few treatment options available to women with pelvic organ prolapse. They include: conservative management, pelvic floor physical therapy, pessary and surgical management.

Of the many forms play can take, physical activity may offer the quickest path to playfulness. All exercise is good, but it is important not to take it too seriously and to remember that recreation should also be pleasurable. Discover how playfulness can make exercise and life more fun, engaging and meaningful. While on vacation in Florida, my husband and I kayaked through tunnels of mangroves in the bay for four hours. We saw stingrays and manatees and just enjoyed a different type of workout. On another day, we drove down to Key West and rented bikes for the afternoon. We also went snorkeling and experienced the beauty of the ocean below the surface. It is all about having fun and remembering to take time to play.

race under pressure describes Fearless Females and these three awesome women demonstrate that quality. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, and one Fearless Female is a powerful businesswoman, volunteer, mother and breast cancer survivor. Growing a city is not easy, but this Fearless Female is working hard to make this city thrive through economic diversity. Working with sick children is never easy, but this Fearless Female is part of an organization that helps families cope as well as fund research. All three Fearless Females are a source of inspiration to the community.

FEARLESS FEMALES he city of North Las Vegas has developed into a desirable location to live, work and play, due in part to the efforts of Gina Gavan. As the director of the Economic Development Division for the city, she is responsible for increasing and diversifying the economic growth for the city through business attraction, expansion and retention.

Gina Gavan

Working for City Growth

Many know her as the founder and visionary behind Project Dinner Table, a purpose-driven platform rooted in community engagement and social responsibility. Gavan also is the founder of Tribal Minds, an innovative Las Vegas-based consulting firm specializing in ground-up strategies, brand and sponsorship management, social responsibility and cause-oriented marketing. She has developed sharp expertise in cause mobilization and community advocacy, and in taking ideas from concept to implementation. Gavan grew up in Bloomington, Indiana, and received her Bachelor of Science degree in liberal arts from Indiana University. She moved to Las Vegas in 2000 seeking opportunity, which she found. “I could reinvent myself. All of the things I’ve done from working for media companies, a sports team and real estate developers, then owning my own businesses to now working in economic development. The business climate here is very entrepreneurial,” Gavan said. “It’s been a great place to evolve professionally by wearing a lot of hats, being fearless, and simply making the decision to not only work and live here, but to simply get involved in the community.” As for her current position, Gavan was seeking a new challenge to apply all she learned in her career and was thrilled when she was hired. The inspiration that drives her forward in any kind of work she has ever done has been rooted in her ability to develop, deepen and refine her skills and talents. According to Gavan, “What I love about my role at the city is that every day I have this opportunity to continually evolve through the knowledge I’ve gained, to problem-solving to creativity to deepening connections, and, more importantly, it’s an outlet for

my passion in developing and building communities. All of this is present in what I do for the city.” She also finds inspiration in people, nature, words, art, and in her own head and heart. One book that has had a profound affect on her is “Leadership the Eleanor Roosevelt Way,” by Robin Gerber. This book made her realize how much power women have and “that if we can be courageous enough to tap into it and not be afraid of our own success that anything is possible,” she said. She also took the approach to seek out successful people and essentially interview them in an informal way to find out what were the driving factors in their life that made them fail or succeed. She also sought out advice from them. Her curiosity and drive to learn and to succeed has been her biggest teacher. Gavan has paid it forward with many people, including Carolina, who actually started out as her daughter’s babysitter. Carolina eventually worked as Gavan’s intern one summer, helping in the business by doing some community engagement, marketing and organizational work. She attended college and graduated from Northeastern University in Boston, studying public health and food. Carolina has since started several community outreach programs for impoverished neighborhoods through her connection to healthy foods and nutrition, as well as movement through dance. Recently she graduated with a certificate degree in management of community organizations from Tufts University. “She is a very special human who offers this world a deep passion for people and creating outlets for a more healthy and connected life,” Gavan said. “I’m really proud of her and I can’t wait to see what she does next.” Personally, Gavan enjoys spending time with the special people in her life, including her daughter, boyfriend and friends. Gina Gavan is a determined Fearless Female.

FEARLESS FEMALES hen a beautiful little girl named Aurora was born with a congenital heart condition, she became the inspiration in changing Kelley McClellan’s future. It was because of her that McClellan accepted the position of the executive director of the Children’s Heart Foundation to make a difference in the community. Aurora was born with a complex heart condition. The niece of a friend of McClellan’s, for 20 months McClellan was inspired by the joy, courage and challenges of Aurora’s life.

Kelley McClellan Follows Her Heart

“She was a true warrior, and an inspiration to many in her short life,” McClellan stated. Shortly before she lost her battle to her congenital heart condition, the executive director position came available at Children’s Heart Foundation, and “I knew immediately that I wanted to be a part of making a difference for children like her and promote awareness of the impact that CHD has in our community,” she said. McClellan grew up as a military brat and traveled the world as a child. Born in Fort Ord, California, she lived in several states, including Hawaii, and abroad in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and Okinawa, Japan. She moved to Las Vegas to be close to her mother as well as attend college, which led her to a career in the gaming industry. She worked with Station Casinos for nearly 10 years, which was one of the highlights of her leadership development. It also provided her with an education in gaming, human resources, training and marketing. According to McClellan, “It had been a dream of mine to be an executive director for a children’s charity. A few years ago, after a major life change, I realized that putting off that dream until someday was keeping me from fulfilling my purpose and passion. A friend of mine that knew my heart called me one day about a position at St. Jude’s Ranch for Children

as the director of development, and I seized the opportunity.” She admits that her son Devin is an inspiration to follow her heart. The children and families she serves inspire her daily to be brave, strong and fearless in all that she does. “They remind me that every day is a gift and should be filled with giving my best in all I that do; that my purpose is to create joy and have a positive impact on every life I am fortunate to touch,” she explained. One of her mentors for many years is Ann Nicholson, president and owner of the Simmons Group. “She is my greatest inspiration for believing in myself, for being a lifelong learner, for realizing the impact my life has on everyone I meet, for leading with my heart and for constantly evolving into my best version of myself.” The Children’s Heart Foundation is committed to making a difference in the lives of heart families through emotional, educational and financial support to inspire a higher quality of life. Its four main goals are to provide a medically supervised, carefree camp experience for children with heart conditions, to educate health care professionals and the general public on pediatric cardiology issues, to lend support to families as they deal with the emotional and financial toll exacted by a child’s heart problem, and to support research efforts in the field of pediatric cardiology. Congenital heart defects are the No. 1 birth defect in America and the No. 1 cause of death during the first year of life. In the United States, nearly twice as many children die each year from a CHD than all forms of childhood cancers combined. McClellan also volunteers for other children’s foundations, including the Torino Foundation that provides their children’s heart camps, and Families for Effective Autism Treatment. She also enjoys spending time with her son and leads an active social life. Following her heart, Kelley McClellan is truly a Fearless Female.

tacy Watkins is driven by her passion to improve the lives of many, whether it is through financial literacy, breast cancer awareness, or the impact of treating cancer. While she has always been focused, everything changed on Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 16, 2012, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Watkins sought treatment and endured six-and-a-half weeks of radiation every evening without missing one day of work. She maintained high levels of performance at her job, continued her volunteer work at Junior Achievement, and remained as team mom for her two sons’ baseball club and Little League teams.

St acy Watkins Beating Cancer Fuels Her Passion

“Most people say, ‘You’re lucky, you only had stage 1 cancer and only had to have radiation,’ but they have no idea all the maintenance that is involved and the snowball issues that have occurred,” she explained. “I’m incredibly grateful for all of the support I’ve received over the years from my family, friends, baseball community, and Nevada State Bank. I fight to work hard and pay back as well as pay forward all that has been given to me in means of support.” Today, as a senior vice president and regional manager at Nevada State Bank, she manages 15 bank branches and 150 employees. Watkins has also dedicated the past 16 years of her life to volunteering and advocating for financial literacy through Junior Achievement of Southern Nevada. The nonprofit provides business, economic and life-skills programs. She served on the organization’s board of directors for the past 10 years and was appointed chairman in 2014. She has assisted dozens of women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and has influenced over 100 women to regularly get a mammogram. Eventually, she would like to start a nonprofit organization to assist people

with the many unforeseen issues involved with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. One major medical problem Watkins experienced with cancer treatments was the devastating impact on her dental health. Due to radiation treatment and stress, she is currently undergoing major reconstruction of her mouth. She has already paid out $17,000 for replacement of crowns, bridges and implants due to loss of bone and teeth, and will need another $15,000 to $20,000 to complete the work. Insurance will only cover a small portion of these dental expenses. Her treatments overall have consisted of radiation, chemo and an ongoing five to six rounds of antibiotics each year due to a low immune system. In 2015, as a result of appendicitis, it was discovered that Watkins had an enlarged uterus due to the Tamoxifen medication and she underwent three biopsies. She was prescribed Lupron shots at a cost of $3,200 per shot to naturally shut down her ovaries, but it impacted her vision and started to create heart issues. Watkins stopped immediately and made the decision to have a full hysterectomy, due to the side effects and the results of her biopsies. “My prognosis is amazing. I consider myself lucky and have a better understanding of my blessings at a young age,” she explained. “I strongly believe you have to manage breast cancer no differently than diabetes or a heart condition. You don’t just have surgery and move on. It changes everything and is a new way of living, and you have to stay on top of doctors, ask a lot of questions, and there’s a ton of maintenance work and financial hardships, but you have to mentally prepare and always plan and manage it so it doesn’t manage you. I truly believe I was put in this situation to be a voice to help others and to one day make a difference in this crazy process where it can help people the most.” Stacy Watkins clearly demonstrates she’s a Fearless Female.

MARKETING THE IMPORTANCE OF EXPOS By Ruth Lauber

E

xpos are more popular than ever. While an online presence is part of any business marketing plan, people still want to meet other people face-to-face. Expos are the ideal way to connect with the public and showcase products and services. A plan should be created, whether attending as a guest or as a vendor, to maximize its marketing potential. If attending as a guest, here are some tips: 1. Wear comfortable walking shoes. You want to be able to cover the entire floor with a smile on your face. 2. Bring a tote or some other bag to be able pick up literature and carry it. 3. If a woman, wear a small purse with a shoulder strap for valuables and business cards. 4. Speaking of business cards, bring plenty of them. 5. Bring bottled water to stay hydrated. 6. When you arrive, check out the layout. Are there specific vendors that would benefit your business or whom you can partner with? Visit them first when you are fresh. 7. Walk around the expo and see if there are new businesses to check out.

If manning a booth, here are some tips: 1. Wear comfortable shoes. People can tell if you are hurting or in pain. 2. Smile and reach out to guests walking past your booth. But don’t be too aggressive. If they are interested, they will stop. 3. Ask them about their business. People enjoy speaking about themselves and this will give valuable information if they are potential clients. 4. Bring snacks. There is nothing worse than being hungry. 5. Display something that will draw people’s attention, such as a banner or big sign. 6. If there are two or more people manning the booth, walk around and introduce yourself to the other vendors. They are also potential clients. 7. Collect and exchange business cards. You can offer a giveaway in exchange for a business card. 8. Follow up with those business cards. An email thanking them for stopping by will open doors. With planning, expos are a valuable source of networking, exposure and gaining new clients. It can be a fun and rewarding way to conduct business as well. Get ready to market your business as an attendee and vendor.

ALISON JACOBSON

Safety Mom educates families about protection against cyber attacks By Rose Watson

T

echnology has become a fundamental part of life and cyberbullying along with cyberpredators are a legitimate concern for all parents. Alison Jacobson, nicknamed the “Safety Mom,” is a driving force for cyber education and anti-bullying campaigns across the United States. Jacobson shares her knowledge on how to educate and protect kids who may not understand all the pitfalls of online interaction. Cyberbullying has become an epidemic. With the ability to act behind the anonymity of a screen, attacks can be much more vicious and are aimed at the victim’s psychological well-being. The bullies themselves may not understand the extent to which their comments can affect an individual. The lack of context and body language online can create extremely cruel attacks. Online bullying can start as young as third grade, so it’s important to be aware. Being able to identify the signs of being bullied is imperative to helping a child out of that situation. Jacobson advises that a parent should look for their child being less excited for activities they previously enjoyed, hesitant to go to school and disinterested in social situations with other kids. However, parents are often still surprised to find out that their child is being bullied. Cyberpredators are a different kind of threat altogether. Predators are usually much older than their targets and are often known to or acquaintances of their targets. “About 78 percent of victims of cyberpredation are young girls between the ages of 8 and 17 years old,” Jacobson said. “[Predators are] usually reaching out to a hundred or so [girls] at a time.” Predators use manipulation to get to their targets, often feeding them validation and compliments to create a false sense of closeness. Especially with young girls, there is a sense of being special to this mysterious older person, which is intoxicating. The predator uses that as leverage in their grooming of a victim to accept abuse. Sometimes cyberpredators will escalate the relationship to stalking and threatening their targets, especially when the victim tries to end the relationship.

So how can a parent protect their child? “Always keep your accounts private,” Jacobson said. She also recommends a healthy use of the block feature many social media have, keeping geotags off posts so people cannot see where a child is when they post, and also being aware of what children post. Jacobson urges parents to learn how to use the platforms their children interact on so they can understand how bullies and predators can reach their children. Snapchat is as different from Facebook as ice cream is from spaghetti; an understanding of the differences is crucial to helping a child. Above all, Jacobson asks that people try to be the parents that their children can trust and bring their problems to. Often there is a level of shame and embarrassment for the victim of both cyberbullies and cyberpredators. If a child feels comfortable bringing their situation to their parents, the parents and children can then work together as a team to solve the problem. EDUCATE

eyond my first major discovery causing the invention of the revolutionary Personal Time-Map System, I had another powerful perception-lifting insight. My second greatest discovery of all time is what I refer to as BEF, which stands for the Bullsh*t Element Factor. BEF is defined as that mysterious aspect of our existence that causes the easiest and simplest things to be difficult or impossible to accomplish. An example is meeting someone and experiencing a most powerful romantic attraction. However, they are faithfully married or have an unbearable odor or are dishonest and untrustworthy. In other words why can’t it be as simple as mutual desire and attraction without the BEF?

MARS-VENUS INSPIRATION Oh, Those Darn Obstacles By Rev. Thabiti

Other examples of BEF are: Why can’t we all agree to just love and respect one another? Why can’t we all agree not to harm, lie to, cheat or steal from each other? Why can’t we have all of the love, power, financial success and freedom that we want? Why do we choose to get angry if we don’t have to? Why is the annoying BEF so necessary? BEF is necessary in order to build you into a greater and more dynamic expression of your higher potential and to expose your inner greatness and reveal your inner genius.

Here are some words of wisdom that have been passed down through the ages that directly address the presence of BEF. Adversity exists to make us stronger. For example, lifting weights in the gym causes resistance or adversity to the muscles, which results in bigger and stronger muscles if done on a regular, routine basis. All great things are preceded by chaos, and this is why we never want to get too distracted by the birth pains or else we will miss out on the beauty of the birth that is also happening. We cannot control everything, but we can control our response to anything and how we respond to anything that happens will always reveal our true level of consciousness or spiritual maturity. Happy Blessings Rev. Thabiti is internationally known as the world’s most accurate personal forecast expert. His Time-Map System, available to the public at ThePower.org, provides reliable directional guidance and a superior illuminated advantage over your situation or circumstance. He is also in the documentary movie “The Illumined Ones,” to be released later this year.

THE GREAT

QUESTIONS

WITH THE SCINTAS By Debbie Hall

Do you ever play “tourist” in Vegas? If so, what is your favorite thing to do? Joe Scinta: I don’t frequent the Las Vegas Strip much anymore, but I like to go grab a great dinner a couple days a week. What do you do to unwind and relax? Frankie Scinta: I love getting together with the family at night, throwing something on the grill (wings, lamb shoulders-stuffed hot peppers), have a few drinks, and reminiscing of the days when we had nothing but really had everything. Does anyone ever mistake you for someone else? Frankie Scinta: Yes Tom Jones, or the Tom Jones impersonator that performs somewhere here in Las Vegas. I always look at them and sing “Delilah.” The Scintas will perform their critically acclaimed comedy and musical variety show at the Plaza Hotel & Casino at 7:30 p.m. on select dates through Nov. 12. VIP tickets are available offering guests preferred seating and an autographed photo. A special dinner and a show package is also available and includes a three-course prix fixe dinner at Oscar’s steakhouse in addition to a VIP show ticket. Tickets are available online at plazahotelcasino. com or by calling 702.386.2507.

Walk us through a typical day in your shoes. Frankie Scinta: Wake up at the crack of 10 a.m., usually to papa’s little ones slapping me in the face to wake me up. That important cup of coffee, turn on the news to see if it’s a dream that the last two people running for president are really Hillary and Donald. Then it is pool time. By 4 p.m. I shower and get ready to go to the Plaza and get onstage in that iconic showroom. I give all I have for 80 minutes onstage, then off to Oscar’s to meet the VIPs and other audience members for a drink or two or three and the best shrimp cocktail I ever had. I hang for about an hour or more, then go home and do it all over again tomorrow. Have you ever purchased any As Seen on TV items? Pete O’Donnell: Yes, the Grill Daddy brush set. It was supposed to help clean the outdoor grill but it never works, so I was cured of that.

3 4 5

If you could destroy a grade-school photo of yourself, what year would it be and why? Janien Valentine: OMG! I would destroy the photo of me from fourth grade, as I had the Dorothy Hamill haircut, looked like a boy and weighed more then than I do now! While grocery shopping, what is your stick-inthe-cart-when-no-one-is-looking item? Pete O’Donnell: Americone Dream Ice Cream by Ben & Jerry. Joe Scinta: Cadbury Fruit Nut bars. If we were to look through your smart phone, what is on your hit list or playlist or favorite app? Janien Valentine: All Adele songs, all the time. Joe Scinta: The Beatles. Pete O’Donnell: Waze GPS app; my daughter goes to school at University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and with Waze, it only takes seven hours to go a mile—because that’s so much better.
