ere I am, operating a business along with being a mom to my 9-month-old baby, Grace, doing both full-time. I quickly realized that when becoming a mother, I had to make decisions on many controversial topics, starting with epidural or natural birth. Then onto other debatable conversations such as vaccinations, attachment parenting vs. cry-it-out methods, when to start solids and whether to be a stay-at-home mom or working mom.

Our corporate office has an office for Grace right next to my office, although I don’t use my desk very often anymore. My desk is now my lap while sitting on the glider in Grace’s office, which consists of a big play mat with books and toys. My mother comes in a few times a week to watch Grace so I can meet with my team, have meetings and tackle the pile of work that has collected on my desk. Quality time with Grace during the day is a priority, so every night I work after she goes to bed, and at 2 a.m. I finally crawl into my slumber.

Letter from THE EDITOR It is springtime with blooming flowers, blossoming plants and the feeling of new growth and beginnings. Southern Nevada, with its diverse environment, showcases the majestic mountains, glistening lakes and beauty of the desert landscape. I am also thrilled to write about the people of Las Vegas and the many ways they contribute to our community. Dental health is so much more than a nice smile. It is important to our well-being and thriving at any age. Dr. Laurie BlochJohnson, on the cover, practices cutting-edge dentistry as well as teaches other dentists the latest advancements. The same is true for our other dentists featured. All of them create a safe environment to help those afraid of the dentist as well as develop innovative techniques. Southern Nevada is one of the best places to receive optimum health care. Speaking of good health, the physicians of WellHealth Women’s Specialty Care answer questions on the minds of readers. Dr. Tiger Devore explores women and improving their sexual response in a pill similar to pills prescribed for men. Meghan Bailey shares about feeling good physically while embracing childhood activities. With the advent of spring, it is time for pastel colors and lighter cosmetics, as shown in Goody Bag. Beautiful hair is a must for any woman, and celebrity hairstylist Elan Bongiorno speaks about working with Eva Longoria as well as gives tips for beauty. Looking to take up a new sport? Check out the newest fashion line shot at Darling Tennis Courts by famed photographer Jerry Metellus. Our Fearless Females inspire me with their devotion to their families, careers and volunteer work. One woman reaches out to homeless and at-risk teenagers, another works with HIV-positive and AIDS patients, and another has pioneered working in the construction industry. Finally, Grace, Tammy and Seth’s daughter, is growing up so fast. She has no fear and loves everyone. She is such a joy to be around during these hectic times. Enjoy our spring issue!

Blue Man Group AN OUTRAGEOUS EXPERIENCE WRITTEN BY DEBBIE HALL AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY LINDSEY BEST

A loud, raucous show without a word

B

lue Man Group is comedy, theater, rock concert and dance party all rolled into one. The show returned to the Luxor Hotel and Casino to a specially designed Blue Man Theater. An outrageous multi-sensory experience, new music, design, technology and a new finale transformed the show to bring the entire audience together for a euphoric celebration of life in full color. “I think this is the closest we have ever come to the perfect setting. There’s not a bad seat in the house,” said Blue Man Group’s cofounder Chris Wink during a press conference held to welcome the Blue Man Group back to the Luxor. “Not only can everyone in the house see well, but the Blue Men can also make direct eye contact with every single person in the audience at some point during the show, and that’s really part of the intimacy.” Backed by a live rock band, the premise includes the curious Blue Man characters exploring the latest cultural influences, which includes (comically) selecting a strong

password on devices, conversations expressed entirely through emojis and posting selfies. Be prepared for quick messages, loud sensations and distractions. The Blue Man Group members engage the audience, even bringing one of them on stage while maintaining a very high-energy performance during the entire show. It is impossible to catch everything happening on stage and surrounding the audience by enjoying just one performance. Formed in 1987 by Wink, Phil Stanton and Matt Goldman on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, Blue Man Group has developed into an award-winning global entertainment company. Along with Las Vegas, Blue Man Group performs in New York, Boston, Chicago, Orlando, Berlin, a North/South American Tour and a show on the Norwegian Cruise Line ship Epic. Along with its theater productions, Blue Man Group has toured with its “Megastar World Tour,” a rock concert parody, released five albums, contributed to film scores, performed with orchestras around the country and appeared in advertising campaigns for prominent brands.

Wonder what goes on behind the scenes of the Blue Man Group show? Behind the Blue, the 75-minute behind-the-scenes tour, is available prior to the first performance of the night. Guests get an inside perspective of what it takes to put on an award-winning Las Vegas production. It is a backstage journey through the colorful world of Blue Man Group with a tour of the show’s wildly inventive instruments and props. Guests also get an exclusive access and viewing of nightly sound check with the cast and crew from that evening’s performance. Blue Man Group appears nightly at the Luxor Las Vegas at 7 and 9:30 p.m. During the month of March, Blue Man Group is dark on March 2 and has three performances March 24-30 at 4, 7 and 9:30 p.m. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit the Blue Man Group box office, any MGM Resorts International ticketing outlet, blueman.com/ lasvegas or call 1.800.blueman. Residents of Nevada can save up to 50 percent on tickets with a valid Nevada ID (subject to availability).

United Way of Southern Nevada How a single suit can change a woman’s life

A

ny woman who has ever been on an interview knows that nervous feeling in the pit of her stomach sitting across from a hiring manager, discussing career skills in an effort to prove that she is the best person for the job. Imagine wearing a skirt to that interview that has staples holding the hem or trying to make sure that a safety pin doesn’t pop open. “Finding a job in this competitive marketplace is hard enough, but having to worry about clothes that don’t fit, are stained or show their age does not build confidence when you are trying to get on your feet,” said Tina Prieto, Women’s Development Center. “Having a suit that fits and looks like new helps any woman to feel beautiful, confident and smart.” The United Way of Southern Nevada’s Women’s Leadership Council’s 8th Annual Women’s Fall Suit Drive brought together an incredible 12,273 professional items to help women at local agencies with back-to-work programs. “This contribution is the biggest, most wonderful donation, as it gets the ladies ready to build their confidence to overcome incredible barriers,” said Maggie Mendez, formerly with The Shade Tree. “Instead of being victims, they become overcomers.” Annabe, who was recently hired, shared that through the Suit Drive, she received clothing that helped her to feel confident and professional when she goes to work.

Annabe poses with Maggie Mendez after Annabe found employment with a future.

“I get nice things to wear to my job,” said Annabe. “I feel awesome.” One recipient named Joanna just had a baby and had to leave everything behind to start a new life. For her, getting a suit from the drive is inspiring and motivational. “It’s not just the clothes that matter,” said Joanna. “I feel like people care.” Benefitting from the drive were United Wayaccredited agencies including Catholic Charities, Goodwill Career Connections, S.A.F.E. H&H Retirement Design and Management:

Educating women about finance

A

s Vice President and Chief Operations Officer of H&H Retirement Design and Management Inc., Julie Himmler strives to educate women about finances and help them achieve their life goals. The women in the company’s clientele’s age group tend to let the men handle the finances, yet women generally outlive men. According to Himmler, the staff and management of H&H pride themselves on teaching clients how to handle their money. “What we find is that many people initially come to our office with the belief that our company is just like everyone else in the financial industry, meaning they think we are financial advisers, or brokers,” Himmler explained. “Many people in our industry call themselves financial advisers, however, many do not possess the conviction to always act in the best interest of the client.” At H&H, the client always comes first. As part of its fiduciary responsibility, any advice or action taken by H&H can be proven to be in the best interest of the client. While financial brokers without this responsibility tend to act in the best interest of their company with financial products to sell, “We don’t work that way,” Himmler emphasized. “We work with clients who are retirees or those nearing retirement and teach them how to distribute their money in the most tax-efficient way possible.” While the majority of financial advisers are teaching people how to build their wealth, especially in the stock market, H&H focuses on the different needs of retirees who

require a different financial strategy. Due to the volatility of the market, typically it is not the best place for clients who need income. This volatility can lead to a lot of restless nights as the market dips and fluctuates. H&H’s strategy is to set up an income stream and then any excess can go into the market. They understand their clients’ financial needs and work with them to create a program specific to their life and life goals.

“...women in the company’s clientele’s age group tend to let the men handle the finances, yet women generally outlive men. According to Himmler, the staff and management of H&H pride themselves on teaching clients how to handle their money.” H&H does not rely on popular opinion; it uses software called eMoney. “We do everything by mathematics. Everything is calculated,” Himmler said. “We look at the entire picture, something many other financial advisers don’t do. We are focusing on making certain our clients reach their goals, which are very personal and individualized.” By using eMoney, H&H can show clients different scenarios depending on the financial path taken or

changes made. “We allow our clients to dream again.” In 2006, Himmler co-authored the book “Live Rich & Stay Wealthy.” The book is being updated for 2016 and is specifically written for women who are ready to take charge of their finances. Readers will learn how to develop a financial plan that will serve as a guide for the rest of their life. They will also learn how to set purposeful goals and manage them to realize a better quality of life. Readers will be educated on how to prepare, manage and measure how well their financial professionals are doing for them. The book will also unlock some of the secrets to IRAs, 401(k)s, trusts, stocks, bonds and mutual funds. Ultimately, readers will learn the investment planning process so they are better equipped to organize and optimize their financial future. H&H welcomes all inquires and questions and encourages all women (and men) to make an appointment to review their financial present and future. As Himmler expressed, the company wants to help its clients dream again. Arts Guide

CENTAUR ART GALLERIES WRITTEN BY DEBBIE HALL AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATE GELBART

Bringing Art to Las Vegas for over 40 years Centaur Art Galleries is the oldest Las Vegas art gallery featuring the works of master and contemporary artists as well as a place to enjoy fine art. There is a collection of art masterpieces by some of the most important artists in history from the 20th century through today. Its collection features Rembrandt, Renoir, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dal铆, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Joan Mir贸, Norman Rockwell, LeRoy Neiman and Mark Lewis.

20

S

everal contemporary artists are also on display. Anatole Krasnyansky, a prominent architect and watercolorist, left the U.S.S.R. in 1975 and immigrated to the United States. With a master’s degree in architecture and fine art, Krasnyansky’s awareness is showcased in his art. He demonstrates the interdependence of architecture, sculpture, painting and applied art along with his knowledge of these diverse disciplines. While using traditional watercolor techniques, Krasnyansky’s innovative inclusion of paper texture into the creative process is a dynamic component of his art. He is one of the first artists to transform the watercolor medium with properties of an oil painting. Bordering on the surreal, Krasnyansky’s figures never depart from the recognizable. Altogether new in form, they contain echoes of the artist’s Eastern heritage. Hu Jundi was born in China and is one of the most intriguing painters, recognized for his ability to create a sense of delicate serenity and harmony. His work is a fusion of traditional Chinese brush with the depth of an oil painting. His paintings meld Eastern and Western culture together. His works are mostly based on the theme of female characters with classical charm and beauty of the Orient, expressing innocent feminine beauty. Jundi seeks his inspiration from traditional Chinese Yuan verse poetry, music and classical literature. Embracing contemporary pop art, DeVon paints iconic figures including superheroes, rock legends and Hollywood stars. He layers his images with other images, photographs, paint, diamond dust, Swarovski crystals, veils, linen, enamel, wood and light (white or ultraviolet) set in shadow boxes. Sometimes he splatters paint over collages.

DeVon discovered Andy Warhol’s images and contacted Warhol’s protégé, pop artist Steve Kaufman, whose body of work is shown in Centaur Art Galleries. In 2010, Kaufman passed away suddenly, but DeVon had the opportunity to work with Kaufman and continue in his own artistic path.

“The gallery showcases all styles and mediums including abstract, impressionist and pop art.” Renowned jewelry designer Sigrid Insull is Centaur Art Galleries’ first-ever permanent jewelry artist. Her formal training includes a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts as well as attending the Chicago Institute of Design. She taught at universities and developed a successful career in costume design for theatre, film and television. Now a resident of Las Vegas, Insull creates art one can wear using unique antique objects in combination with precious and semi-precious stones. Insull combines form, color, texture and design in her pieces. Her most recent one-of-akind luxury necklace features magnificent pearls from the South Seas and precious and semi-precious stones combined with antique artifacts from around the world. Insull is the wife of actor Bill Lucking, who has appeared in over 100 movies

and television shows. His most recent character was Piney Winston in FX’s “Sons of Anarchy.” Formerly a researcher in cardiovascular health and electrophysiology, Pamela Sukhum left the biomedical field to pursue her true passion of painting. An avid traveler, she has studied in Thailand, Nepal, Tibet, South America and Africa. Sukhum incorporates her experience from her travels in her paintings. Through this influence, her body of work is characterized by rich colors and textures as well as warm, radiant energy. Her use of both broad, sweeping lines and intricate details gives her work depth and dimension. Her journeys around the globe, from the monasteries of Tibet to the refugee camps of Eastern Chad, are expressed in her art. Originally opened 38 years ago by President and CEO Richard C. Perry as Centaur Sculpture Galleries and Minotaur Fine Arts Galleries, the galleries were first in the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace and then the Fashion Show mall to reach tourists and residents. The two galleries were merged, and he then built an 8,000-square-foot gallery with room for expansion. The gallery showcases all styles and mediums including abstract, impressionist and pop art. There are lithographs from both world wars that have been preserved and are now on display. The new location holds events to celebrate the art and artists, pairing it with food and music. Barbecue is prepared in different styles, and Pot Liquor CAS brings all of them to Las Vegas. North Carolina uses a vinegar-based sauce. South Carolina includes all sauces, including mustardbased, vinegar-based and tomato-based. Memphis barbecue is best known for tomato- and vinegar-based sauces. Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee serve a sweet tomato-based sauce. Alabama is also known for its distinctive white sauce, a mayonnaise- and vinegar-based sauce.

Located in Pawn Plaza right next door to the World Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop, home of History’s “Pawn Stars,” Rick’s Rollin Smoke BBQ and Tavern features a cafeteria-style barbecue restaurant downstairs with a full bar upstairs. The tavern offers crafted bar menu items, hand-crafted cocktails and 16 beers on tap.

Big Ern’s BBQ offers guests locally sourced Frankly Good Coffee, and the Fiesta Rancho location provides service to the bingo hall and sports book, as well as takeout orders for hotel guests. Kansas City-style barbecue is characterized by its use of different types of meat including pulled pork, pork ribs, burnt ends, smoked sausage, beef brisket, beef ribs, smoked chicken and smoked turkey. At Pot Liquor CAS, its food, sauce, flavor and rubs are made in house. Take a sip for scholarships at UNLVino

T

he 42nd annual UNLVino, offering tastings of wines, spirits and beers, will be held April 14-16. UNLVino is Nevada’s largest and oldest wine festival, showcasing an international beverage array to raise millions of dollars for Southern Wine & Spirits of Nevada Raise Scholarship Funds, which benefits students at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration. The three-day event includes tastings and will honor three recipients of the Dom Pérignon Award of Excellence. Three individuals selected are those who have “distinguished themselves by setting an example through their inspirational leadership, character and work ethic.” The tastings include: Bubble-Licious at The Venetian’s Doge’s Palace on April 14 from 7 to 10 p.m. UNLVino will pop hundreds of bottles of champagne and sparkling wine at BubbleLicious, under the stars at the Venetian’s Doge’s Palace. A fan-favorite event, BubbleLicious guests will enjoy small plates from the Venetian and Palazzo’s outstanding collection of restaurants. Rob Goldstein, president and chief operating officer of The Venetian and The Palazzo, is the honoree of the 2016 Dom Pérignon Award of Excellence during Bubble-Licious.

Sake Fever at Red Rock Pool on April 15 from 7 to 10 p.m. UNLVino will introduce sakes, craft beer and craft spirits from around the world while reintroducing the popular Sake Fever with an exciting new twist, melding the best of the East and West. Surrounding Red Rock’s scenic pool, the evening will showcase Vegas’ mixology scene, an extensive selection of sakes, plus Japanese and American cuisine from some of the city’s favorite restaurants. Brian Massie, executive chef for Light Group, is the honoree of the 2016 Dom Pérignon Award of Excellence during Sake Fever. The Grand Tasting at Paris Las Vegas on April 16 from 7 to 10 p.m. UNLVino’s timehonored Grand Tasting will delight guests with an unrivaled collection of premium beverages and a fresh entertainment lineup. Delectable cuisine from UNLV’s culinary students and celebrated Las Vegas restaurants will be featured. Jan Jones Blackhurst, executive vice president of communications, governor relations and corporate responsibility for Caesars Entertainment, is the honoree of the Dom Pérignon Award of Excellence during The Grand Tasting. The annual fundraising event has grown from warehouse gamble into a fullblown food festival. When Jerome “Jerry” Vallen was hired in 1967 to start UNLV’s hospitality program, someone proposed a

summer wine tasting class. The idea made sense to Vallen. The first classes were held at the Las Vegas Convention Center and taught by a sommelier from the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel and Casino. After the class was completed, the school offered to give the wine back to the distributors, which wasn’t allowed by law but made an impression on the company. Larry Ruvo, head of Southern Wine & Spirits, approached Vallen about starting a wine tasting in 1974, with the proceeds going to the hotel college scholarship fund. The first event was held in the Southern Wine & Spirits warehouse with fewer than 50 attendees. UNLVino eventually outgrew the warehouse site and moved to the Thomas & Mack Center. “It really has gone from a wine event to a food and wine festival,” said Mohsen Azizsoltani, a former hospitality professor who has been the event coordinator for the past 20 years. Azizsoltani has also seen an increased focus on students gaining valuable hospitality experience at the event. The professor says it’s not uncommon for students to see job offers after using the UNLVino experience as a networking opportunity. “The partnership with Southern Wine & Spirits is very strong. Without them, we really couldn’t be this successful at all,” Azizsoltani stated. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit unlvino.com. SPRING 2016 | W oman M aga zine .V egas

Spring Wines & Spirits Smooth, crisp, bright, aromatic, sweet and fresh are just some of the words to describe our spring wines. Spring is about a new time with blooming flowers and warmer temperatures. Celebrate this time of year with our selections guaranteed to banish any thoughts of winter.

J Vineyards Pinot Gris One of my favorite wines for spring is the J Vineyards Pinot Gris. It’s bright and aromatic with zesty flavors of Meyer lemon, Asian pear and tropical fruits. This medium-bodied white has layers of luscious fruit, floral notes and balanced acidity. It is perfect for casual entertaining or dining Al Fresco.

Pieropan Soave Classico The next time you’re in the mood for an Italian white wine, this is the one to try. Soave is making a comeback, thanks to producers like Pieropan. They have been producing Soave since the 1860s, and their focus is quality, not quantity. This elegant wine reveals flavors of crisp apple, lemon peel and toasted almond. The finish is clean, refreshing and surprisingly long. Pair with shellfish, pesto pasta or lobster risotto for a delectable meal.

This wine is perfect for brunch, picnics, hot tubs or any other occasion. Tip: Bring to a party—you’ll be the most popular one there!

Apothic Crush This limited release red blend is the perfect spring fling. It’s fresh, fruity and very addicting. The palate is bursting with ripe cherry and berry flavors followed by seductive notes of chocolate and spice. Pair with pizza, pasta, burgers or barbecue and plan on love at first sip.

Celebrate springtime with our favorite wine selections!

Angeline Reserve Pinot Noir Looking for an affordable wine that is always a crowd pleaser? Pick up a bottle of Angeline Reserve Pinot Noir. It’s well balanced with intense flavors of strawberry, cherry, cola and vanilla. Velvety tannins and hints of toasted oak linger on the smooth finish. It is delicious by itself, and extremely versatile with food. Try with salmon and wild mushroom ravioli for an extraordinary dining experience.

The three men behind brand management of Devotion Vodka are passionate about this refreshing spirit perfect for so many cocktails. Owners Don Crancer, Nick Christie and Barry Ostrowsky decided to partner to create a great branding company. Devotion Vodka is the first product to become part of the brand management marketing company, which facilitates everything from sales to consumer purchases. They also handle non-alcoholic beverages such as juices, mixers, teas and sodas. Don Pilar Tequila has been added to the company roster. Founded in 2011, Crancer worked in other industries before joining the brand management company. Christie, a veteran, worked in the golf industry before joining the company. Ostrowsky, with a degree in marketing and finance, worked in the Hard Rock Hotel and was recruited by Crancer. As a team, the three of them perform well together to get the word out. “I think Devotion Vodka is an industry leader in many different aspects of the new vodka category,” Ostrowsky said. “Devotion Vodka does not make flavored vodkas but is a flavoring company making vodka. They have a proprietary way to marry together the essentials oils and aromatics from the fruit to flavor the vodka. They approach this vodka spirit differently from everyone else.” Exciting developments will be happening later in 2016 to bring Devotion Vodka to a new level. Devotion Vodka is available in Lee’s Discount Liquor, Whole Foods, Total Wine and other retail outlets. Park on Fremont and Commonwealth offer Devotion Vodka in downtown Las Vegas, and Cabo Wabo Cantina and HarleyDavidson Café offer it on the Las Vegas Strip. “This was a grand anniversary for us,” said owner Hugo Torres, who recently retired as the president of the hotel. He led efforts to make Rosarito a city in 1995 and twice served as its mayor. The 90th anniversary year was one of the hotel’s busiest years in its history. “We have kept our clientele loyal to the Rosarito Beach Hotel because we maintain their interest with very special offers and packages as well as our customer service policies,” he explained.

According to Torres, Rosarito will be promoting new attractions such as more ocean activities, including diving near where a Navy ship was sunk in November to create an artificial reef.

Scenes for the blockbuster film “Titanic” were filmed in Rosarito in 1996. IT’S FAMILY DAY

Every Day at Keever Vineyards BY ANNIE SLIMAN

F

rom the very beginning of my interest in Napa Valley wineries, I had wanted to visit Keever Vineyards. From my research, I knew a little about the family story and something about the winery’s incredible location and its famous cabernet sauvignon. Last but not least, I’d gotten to know the sweet lady of the winery, Olga, who always happily took my calls and answered all my questions. When we were finally able to visit Keever, Olga happened to be away, but her lovely daughter Ashley spent a couple of hours with us and shared more of their family story. 34

Annie Sliman and Ashely Keever

The Keever Family

The family lived in California and then Germany. Ashley’s parents were working in the telecommunications industry, but they spent all their free time traveling to the famous wine regions of Italy, France and Spain. When they moved back to California, Ashley’s mother and father decided to purchase property in Napa Valley and grow grapes. “That’s when things really exploded,” Ashley said. “My mother refers to their wine adventure as progressive insanity.” Keever Vineyards is absolutely a family business. “We are such a small operation that everyone wears multiple hats,” according to Ashley. She and her mother, Olga, work together in the office and give tours and tastings. Her father, Bill, serves as what they laughingly call the CFO, or chief forklift operator, during harvest and does a little of everything else throughout the year. Her brother, Jason, supervises the production line and harvest crew during the grape harvest. The rest of the year, he is in charge of wine production, the laboratory and the cellar to make sure the winemaker’s instructions are carried out. Of course, he’s also Keever’s IT person and has responsibility for its regular employees. Ashley started working in the family business in early 2009. After getting her start in San Francisco’s hospitality industry, she moved to Napa Valley to help with the opening of Yountville’s Bardessono Resort and Spa. One day, her mother told her that she was going

to place an ad for an office assistant to help with the growing Keever Winery business. Ashley responded, “What time do you want me to show up for work?” But come harvest time, it’s all hands on deck, and Ashley is at the sorting tables along with everyone else. During the growing season, Ashley loves to walk the vineyards and check the stages of the vines. The grapes they grow go into Ashley’s favorite wine, which happens to be mine as well, the flagship Keever Cabernet Sauvignon. They have been making this lovely wine since 2002, when their winemaker, Celia Welch, joined the team. “We feel honored to have her as our winemaker,” Ashley raved. “Her palate, nose and winemaking skills are incredible.” Welch helps create the two other varietals that Keever Vineyards specializes in, a sauvignon blanc and Inspirado, which is a red blend. We sipped Keever’s wines while we enjoyed the breathtaking views from the tasting room’s two-story window. The view encompasses Wappo Hill, with the Stag’s Leap rock formation, all the way to the valley floor with Yountville and beyond. It’s simply gorgeous. See and sip for yourself when you visit Napa Valley. Keever Vineyards is located at 26 Vineyard View Drive, on the west side of Highway 29. The telephone is 707.944.0910 and the website is keevervineyards.com.

LIGHTS-CAMERA-ACTION ELAN BONGIORNO Behind the Beauty Artists BY ANDEEN ROSE-CLARK

E

lan Bongiorno, an accomplished celebrity makeup artist and founder of Enjoué Beauté, began her career in New York City working under some of makeup’s true masters. She created looks for runways, advertising campaigns and editorial pieces. Elan then moved to Los Angeles and signed with one of Tinseltown’s best agencies, Exclusive Artists Management. She quickly established herself as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after makeup artists. Las Vegas Woman sat down for a chat with Elan during a break from Eva Longoria’s new show, NBC’s “Telenovela,” and glamming Jane Fonda for her promotional tour. Las Vegas Woman: How did you to get into this industry? Elan Bongiorno: It was a natural process. As a young girl, I always knew that I wanted to be in the beauty industry. I started cosmetology school at 17 years old. The first salon I worked in was an old lady salon where everyone was 80 or older.

“I was fortunate to do the L’Oreal Paris campaigns with Eva. It’s the biggest in the world, and that was a huge accomplishment.”

LVW: What is the No. 1 “must-have” product from your line? EB: Satin Primer is your skin’s new best friend. Oil-free Satin Primer reduces the appearance of fine lines and pores as it luxuriously glides onto the skin. Satin Primer creates a second skin that seals in moisture to keep skin hydrated, and protects from environmental damage. LVW: What projects are you currently working on? EB: “Telenovela” with Eva Longoria; it’s a half-hour comedy. Eva’s character is Ana Sofia, the star of a popular Spanish-language soap opera. One problem, though: She doesn’t speak any Spanish. Also, I am working with Jane Fonda. I travel with her for all the press and promos for her new show, Netflix’s “Frankie & Grace.” LVW: If you had a superpower, what would it be? EB: To read people’s minds. It could be really interesting or really scary. I would also like to transport from one country to another. How much fun would that be?

LVW: Who has been the biggest driving force behind you? EB: My husband, Anthony; we’ve been married 18 years. We met in the industry—he was a hairstylist, and I was his assistant years ago. In our industry, we never know where we are going, what the next project will be, and travel is endless. Without him, I would not be able to do what I do. He supports my career and me. I am lucky to have him.

LVW: What advice would you give to those pursuing a career in the makeup industry? EB: Promote yourself. When I started 20 years ago, there was no social media, YouTube, Facebook or Instagram. Today’s artists need to learn, understand and use social media. It’s free advertising with millions of people using it. You are your model and your own brand. It’s not easy, but we have to do it! And always give back—we were blessed with a gift, and it’s the right thing to do.

LVW: What inspired you to create Enjoué Beauté? EB: I saw the need to simplify women’s beauty routines. Enjoué offers colorcoordinated palettes, classic wearable colors that are easy to custom blend and that all women can use.

LVW: How would you describe yourself? EB: Passionate because I love what I do—every face I paint, I love. Giving in the sense that I would rather give than take, whether it’s time or taking a friend to lunch. Professional—always be early, stay late, whatever is needed, I do without

question. I appreciate where I am and who I am working with. I know there are 10 people behind who want my job, so no matter the client, I always keep it very professional. LVW: You have an amazing career and have been part of some fabulous projects. EB: I was fortunate to do the L’Oreal Paris campaigns with Eva. It’s the biggest in the world, and that was a huge accomplishment. LVW: Is there anything else you want to share with the world? EB: I am committed to helping women by getting involved with the community through domestic violence awareness programs. It’s all about giving back. That, to me, is the most beautiful thing we can do. LVW: Philanthropy is near and dear to your heart. Tell us what you are involved with and why. EB: The American Cancer Society’s Look Good Feel Better program. It helps female cancer patients combat the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment. I have also been a part of the Beauty Bus Foundation for over six years; we provide hair, makeup and nails to patients who are chronically or terminally ill. We also include their caregivers who take care of them. Volunteering feeds my soul! We have a gift; we don’t just make celebrities look good, we make all women feel beautiful and feel good about themselves. That human touch and giving back—that keeps me going! Elan Bongiorno’s credits include Angelica Bridges, Ashley Tisdale, Ben Stiller, Carmen Electra, Carol Alt, Christina Milian, Daryl Hannah, Diane Lane, Harry Hamlin, Heather Locklear, Heidi Klum, Hilary Duff, Holly Robinson Peete, Jaime Pressly, Justin Timberlake, Kate Moss, Kelly Clarkson, Lara Flynn Boyle, Leonardo DiCaprio, Lindsay Price, Liv Tyler, Majandra Delfino, Mandy Moore, Natasha Bedingfield and Sofia Vergara, just to name a few.

“I appreciate where I am and who I am working with. I know there are 10 people behind who want my job, so no matter the client, I always keep it very professional.”

Andeen Rose-Clark is a celebrity hairstylist as well as the owner/operator of ADD Hair & Make Up. Her credits have been seen on television, in national publications, and featured on red carpets around the world. She has styled Eva Longoria, Kendra Wilkinson-Baskett, Courtney Mazza-Lopez, Hope Solo, Jewel, Audrina Patridge, Nicole Scherzinger and many more, as well as local celebrities and media personalities. Her goal is to create the ultimate beauty experience, and with her exceptional skills, she can make any vision or dream possible. SPRING 2016 | W oman M aga zine .V egas

LE-VEL : ARE YOU READY TO THRIVE? T

hrough their vision and desire to develop a healthier way of life, Jason Camper and Paul Gravette created Le-Vel. The founders’ commitment to using PREMIUM GRADE raw ingredients and premium formulations has made Le-Vel the fastest growing health and wellness movement in North America. The THRIVE Experience is a combination of the THRIVE Premium Lifestyle Capsule, THRIVE Ultra Micronized Lifestyle Shake Mix and patent-pending Premium Lifestyle DFT (Derma Fusion Technology) as wearable nutrition. It is a premium naturopathic and synergistic formula of vitamins, minerals, plant extracts, anti-oxidants, enzymes, pro-biotics and amino acids. It’s ultra premium at its finest. What’s even better is that the experience is gender specific for women and men.

needed to lose a few extra unwanted pounds after my first pregnancy. At the age of 36, I have a beautiful little girl and I am back in my skinny jeans! With the results, I wanted to change lives and I became a full time Le-Vel Brand Promoter.” After taking 12 different supplements in order to fill nutritional gaps, Kari Brough decided to try THRIVE. “It was three simple steps that I could do in the first 20 minutes of my day. After 10 days, I felt so good I started sharing it with everyone around me. I decided to become a promoter because I love the product. Not only am I saving time, but also money because I now get my product for free.”

There are many ways people can benefit using the THRIVE Experience including weight management, cognitive performance, digestive and immune support, joint support, lean muscle support, discomfort relief, anti aging and antioxidant support. The key is simplicity.

RoseAnn Palazzolo had a similar experience. “I can honestly say, after 17 months of THRIVING, I am a better mom and wife. I can’t remember the last time I felt this happy and full of life. THRIVE has completely changed my life physically and mentally, I feel like I’m in my 20s again. My joint and back discomforts are virtually gone. Not only has Thrive given me joint support, but inflammation support as well; I have sustained energy.”

Four Las Vegas women, from diverse backgrounds with nine children between them, not only live the THRIVE Experience but have changed careers. They now own and operate their own Le-Vel businesses as Independent Brand Promoters. Each were introduced to LeVel in different ways but all are very passionate about Le-Vel and the THRIVE Experience.

Previously working in the mortgage industry, Sophia Chan-McNeil explained, “Prior to THRIVE, I was mentally and physically exhausted. My back inflammation affected me so much that standing or sitting for long periods of time would cause discomfort. THRIVE has helped with my inflammation, digestive system, weight management and

mental clarity. Now I can say I’m living a better quality of life. I decide to go full time as a brand promoter and I am a stay at home mom.” It’s free to register through these four amazing women to order product. Whether a customer or Le-Vel Brand Promoter, get THRIVE for free by referring two purchasing customers. If interested in becoming a Le-Vel Brand Promoter, there is no fee to enroll as a Customer or Brand Promoter, and there are many incentives such as being able to earn a luxury auto bonus as a Brand Promoter. Le-Vel is cutting edge, and its Cloud-Based business model eliminates traditional overhead. With this innovation, Le-Vel can afford to buy much higher quality, raw premium grade ingredients and offer a premium level product line that has everyone talking about the results. A Sex Pill for Women: IS IT THE NEW FEMALE VIAGRA? BY DR. TIGER DEVORE

W

hen Viagra first hit the market for men, it was obvious within a year of its introduction that it was going to be one of the most successful medications ever marketed by a pharmaceutical company, with $4 billion in sales reported in 2014. In fact, in its first month, Viagra had over 500,000 prescriptions. The new sex pill for women, Addyi (flibanserin), had 227 prescriptions in its first month. So what’s the difference? Viagra works by increasing blood flow to the pelvis, making it easier for men to get and maintain an erection (just like those TV commercials tell you) within 20 minutes or so. Addyi works by changing brain chemistry, much like antidepressants, which requires taking the drug daily as the effect builds over the first two to six weeks. Viagra makes it easier for men to get an erection, a functional effect

that is easy to measure. Addyi is advertised as being able to increase sexual interest, a much harder effect to measure. Both Viagra and Addyi cost about $26 per pill. Men usually use Viagra four to six times per month, costing them about $100. Women will be looking at spending around $780 per month. There are side effects with this drug, including low blood pressure and risk of fainting. Women are encouraged not to drink alcohol while taking Addyi. The Food and Drug Administration had rejected Addyi twice before finally giving it approval. Some people asked, “If there is a drug for sexual performance enhancement for men, why isn’t there a drug for women as well, and if there is, why isn’t it being approved?”

DR. TIGER IS ANSWERING YOUR QUESTIONS Please enjoy this forum, and email your questions or issues of interest to “Ask Dr. Tiger” to info@lvwomanmagazine.com. For more information, call Dr. Tiger at 702.900.4845 or visit tigerdevorephd.com

Privacy will be maintained.

Finally, the FDA gave a kind of approval that included conditions: Doctors must be certified to prescribe Addyi, to be sure that they understand the risks of taking the drug and are competent to counsel women before they use Addyi. Doctors have to take an online course to prescribe, all of which the FDA sees as providing an additional safeguard against misuse of the drug. Viagra was initially a drug only for men with diagnosed erectile dysfunction; it’s now clear that many men are using Viagra to enhance their performance as they age, or in many cases, simply as a recreational drug. Addyi doesn’t have that potential for abuse. Addyi is approved to be prescribed for women who are premenopausal and have been diagnosed with hypoactive sexual desire disorder. The low sexual interest must be as a result of HSDD, not a psychiatric condition like anxiety or depression, or relationship problems.

So does it work, and is it worth it? Like many drugs on the market, if it works for you, then you are glad that it exists and can help you with your medical complaint. The first months of this drug being on the market are not making it look like the kind of blockbuster drug that Viagra became. Given the side effects, the alcohol restrictions, the extra requirements to become a prescriber that doctors must complete and the small population of women with diagnosed HSDD, who are therefore eligible to receive the drug, Addyi is not for everyone, and indications are it’s going to be for a relatively small number of women. That pill for an enhanced sexual experience for women, like Viagra for men, is still waiting to be discovered, approved and marketed. Dr. Tiger Devore, known as Dr. Tiger, is a clinical psychologist, AASECT Certified Sex Therapist and media expert on sex and relationships. But most important, he is a person who cares with over 25 years of practice and expertise working with women and their specific issues.

THE BRAND-NEW Red Rock Fertility Center A Building Designed to Support a Compassionate Philosophy

S

ince its founding in 2008, Red Rock Fertility Center has helped thousands of clients begin or expand their families. Many of these clients presented a profile that many fertility doctors would turn away from or find extremely challenging. However, RRFC founder and Practice Director Eva Littman, M.D., FACOG, has developed a reputation by taking on these difficult cases. Due to her long history of success rates, her practice has seen an increase in volume every year. This necessitated moving Red Rock Fertility Center to a new, larger state-of-the-art facility. Dr. Littman and her dedicated staff look forward to helping many more people achieve their dream of welcoming healthy babies into their lives. The new facility includes every technical innovation available, which Dr. Littman knows is critical to success. Her first focus is always on making each patient feel comfortable, secure and optimistic from the very beginning of the treatment process. According to Dr. Littman, “We believe in the importance of a serene, family-oriented environment where patients are treated as people, not as numbers.” She believes that reducing the overall stress involved with the process by incorporating shorter wait times and a soothing, spa-like environment improves the experience of what can be a very challenging, emotional time for her patients and their families. The new facility

has a warm, inviting feeling, starting with serene décor, an upscale concierge desk and continuing with the elegant ambiance upstairs, which includes a stress-relieving salt room for massage and acupuncture. The new facility is one of the largest in vitro fertilization centers on the West Coast and is equipped to handle a much larger volume of patients. It includes several dedicated treatment, consultation and exam rooms. It features a separate education center in which classes on topics related to infertility and group injection instruction, as well as fertility seminars, will be held on a monthly basis. The new custom-built IVF laboratory is three times larger than the former space and is connected to several embryo transfer rooms and two Class C Operative Suites. This will give Red Rock Fertility Center the ability to offer the complete treatment, including reproductive surgery, all in the same location. RRFC has also invested in the very latest technology for its certified clean room, which features a specially designed HEPA air filtration system. Throughout the facility, the custom MedGas gas and vacuum system provides an environment that is always optimum for successful procedures and embryo development. The new building is equipped with a full-size backup generator and a state-of-the-art security system that will ensure the constant safety and protection of every embryo.

The new IT network is highly secure, with Wi-Fi available throughout the building and an IP telephone system designed to reduce hold times. The positive patient experience is so important to Dr. Littman and the Red Rock Fertility Center staff. As one of the most trusted fertility experts in the country, she understands that medical technology supports the important process of trust building and compassion in fertility treatment. “I have always liked the quote, ‘The light on a candle is always brightest when it’s first lit.’ How we relate to that here at Red Rock Fertility Center is that we strive to accomplish successful pregnancies the first time around to keep our patients’ hopes high and their stress levels low,” Dr. Littman said. Red Rock Fertility Center uses all of its resources to create thousands of pregnancies, many on the first treatment attempt. The gorgeous new RRFC facility is designed around this important core philosophy along with the dedication and passion of Dr. Littman and her staff that are part of providing the best fertility care. Finding Happiness OUTSIDE OF SOCIETY NORMS BY MEGHAN BAILEY

J

ust like a bottle of fine wine, former athletes are coming off the dusty shelf where society stocked them away, and for good reason.

Do you remember when you were 10 years old? You were fearless, playful, imaginative and determined to have fun. Even if you failed on your first, second or third try, you dusted yourself off and went right back to it. Where did that person go? Better yet, where did those stress-free days go? More and more people are suffering from the everyday work grind and finding that daily stressors are taking a toll on their mental health. That was me, and that is what was happening every day until a wise person asked me to help build a Lego castle. Those brief four minutes with my 3-year-old son, who has the attention span of, well, a 3-year-old, were pure bliss. It got me thinking about what made me happy. Until now, I had to be an adult every day, work to pay bills and put the weight of the world on my shoulders. For me the answer was simple. I loved gymnastics. It started when I was 4 years old and trying to flip off my mom’s couch. One black eye later, there I was standing in heaven—or at least, that is what it felt like at the time. Over the years, I gained confidence, balance and strength— but that wasn’t all that I learned. I also developed time management, patience, perseverance and

true grit. Society told me that I couldn’t be a gymnast anymore once I cleared puberty, and I listened to them. So my stress outlet was taken away, but I began coaching because the passion for the sport was deeply rooted in my soul, and that helped. However, after having my little boy, I knew it was time to let that passion go so I could spend more time with my son and create the life I wanted for him. As months rolled on, I started to become more successful in my career. I was getting the hang of being a mom, but I was also beginning to let the stress of hard work, insecurity and guilt compile. I tried everything that society told me that I needed to do to relieve stress at my age— yoga, Pilates, running, weight lifting, meditation and wine (OK, the wine may have helped)—but honestly, nothing was helping me relieve stress, until the day I was asked to play with those Legos. And that was my “aha” moment. What was holding me back from still continuing with what I loved to do? I’m almost in my 30s, and I can still do a back handspring, so why did I have to stop gymnastics? It took some research. There are not many places that allow for adult tumbling, but I wasn’t taking no for an answer. The very next week, I walked back into my heaven, to the place that gave me the foundation for my life, which is the gym. Being able to twist, flip and crash a few times was exhilarating. I forgot about everything and everyone except for one important person—me. Happiness doesn’t have to come with the status quo. Maybe, just maybe, happiness can come from the soul. So tell me, what did you like to do when you were 10?

“...I had to be an adult every day, work to pay bills and put the weight of the world on my shoulders. For me the answer was simple. I loved gymnastics.”

eet Dr. Laurie, a dentist who has been practicing for over 29 years and offers general dentistry with a focus on cosmetic, reconstructive and TMJ disorders. More than just creating a beautiful smile, she has developed her practice using a totally different approach that one might not expect at a dentist’s office. From the moment a patient walks into her practice, they notice how serene and inviting it feels. There are only four chairs in her reception area, and it’s never crowded. That is because Dr. Laurie is committed to seeing one patient at a time and always being on time. Dr. Laurie creates a different experience by giving the time needed to have all of the patient’s questions answered. She feels that sitting down with every patient on their first visit and doing an executive physical of the teeth, gums and mouth gives her patients choices and an awareness to create good dental health and a beautiful smile.

having a face-to-face meeting with the artist who is creating your new smile. She loves to answer questions for potential patients who are ready to improve the health of their teeth and the beauty of their smile as well as embrace the self-confidence one gains when one feels good about him or herself. Dr. Laurie spoke with Las Vegas Woman magazine about the many aspects of her practice and how she can help people. How do your teeth impact your facial appearance? When your facial tissues developed, they grew around the framework provided by your bones and teeth. This created the youthful look of your face.

58

Time impacts your smile in many ways. You may have noticed your teeth becoming discolored, but you may not have noticed the amount of wear your teeth have sustained with the passing years. As your teeth wear, they become shorter, changing the proportion and shape of your face. Your face becomes shorter and rounder, less of an elegant oval, attractive heart or strong square, and more of an aging circle. You may notice that your lips change shape, becoming thin, compressed and wrinkled. Jowls appear as excess fat and skin begin to sag at the jawline, a deep crease develops between your chin and lower lip, and the skin of your lower face becomes squished. The result is a sagging facial appearance with more wrinkles. This can make you look older than you are. The overall result is an olderlooking smile and a drastically changed facial appearance. How can a non-surgical facelift help you? We understand that aesthetics means great smiles and younger faces. Your front teeth support your lips, and your back teeth support your jawline. When restoring your smile, slight yet precise increases create fuller lips, less facial wrinkles, tighter necks and stronger chins. Restoring your smile helps reverse the aging process. What should I expect from my first consultation? It is important that you feel comfortable with your choice of a dental office for your care. As with any new relationship, getting to know one another is the first step in determining whether or not our office will be a good fit for you. It’s a great way to explore a new world of possibilities for your smile. Getting started with us is easy. We begin by making you an appointment for a private consultation with our team. We will send you a few simple forms to fill out. To make the most of your appointment time, we will review your forms prior to your visit. When you arrive, our new patient coordinator will meet privately with you in our consultation room. The two of you will sit down and talk. We will listen to you. It is very important to us to find out what you want to see and how we can help you. Next, you will have a set of digital photographs made of your mouth, and a quick complimentary computerized bite analysis made of your bite. I will then see you, and we will look at your photographs on a big-screen TV. You, our new

patient coordinator and myself will then be able to discuss your concerns. After reviewing your photos, listening to what you want and examining your mouth, problems and solutions begin to present themselves. During your consultation, we will talk about your goals, assess your bite and recommend the best option for you. Your consultation with me will be over an hour of our undivided attention. Whether we decide to work together or not, you will leave your consultation with a clear understanding of what is going on in your mouth. While we understand that many offices offer free consultations, the comprehensive nature of our consultations make the nominal fee an outstanding value. Why should metal fillings be replaced with white fillings? There are two major misconceptions people have about metal fillings in their back teeth: that their appearance doesn’t matter and that they’re functionally fine. Although these fillings may not be visible when you smile, they are visible when you talk and when you eat, which means you’re showing them a lot more than you think. And although you may not be aware of problems with these fillings, chances are that damage is being done to your teeth every time you chew, eat, drink or clench your teeth. White fillings will not only improve the appearance of your smile, they can make it healthier and more comfortable, too. Over the past 40 years, many advances have been made in the materials and techniques used to fill cavities and repair decayed teeth. When fillings were first introduced nearly 200 years ago, they were all made of amalgam, a metal mixture containing mercury, which even then caused controversy. These fillings, which are still used today, are not desirable for a variety of reasons: They are prone to cracking over time, very noticeable (often turning black with age) and contain hazardous mercury. For all of these reasons, tooth-colored dental filling upgrades that use metal-free materials are more popular than ever. Aside from the reasons listed above, plastic and porcelain filling upgrades offer many benefits over amalgam. When you upgrade your metal fillings to tooth-colored fillings made from porcelain or composite, they are custommade to create a better seal over your teeth. It is stronger and hardens much more quickly than amalgam, and it matches the natural color and sheen of your teeth. They also don’t expand or contract in extreme hot and cold

temperatures, which can cause your teeth to be sensitive and weaken over time. What’s new in dentistry? There are several things I have incorporated this year to make visiting the dentist more relaxed and pain-free. One is a technology that allows us to buffer our anesthetic so it matches the body’s PH. This takes away the sting that is often associated with a typical injection. I also offer NuCalm to help relax anxious patients. NuCalm uses stereo headphones, an herbal supplement and an electronic stimulus to put the patient in a meditative state. Not only is it great for dental appointments, NuCalm is also used with professional athletes to improve performance, help stimulate healing and decrease stress in the body. T-scan is an incredible tool we use to test a patient’s bite forces. It uses a wafer that has sensors embedded in it, kind of like stepping on a foot sensor to see where pressure points are in your feet. It offers one a higher level of accuracy to find out whether a patient’s bite may be causing problems for the teeth, bone or jaw. Another thing that is exciting and new is an appliance that is custom fitted to a patient’s jaw to eliminate snoring. It is called a Micro2 and was developed here at the institute. Most people feel that snoring is an annoyance but not a health issue. What we know is that many people who snore have underlying sleep apnea. For a patient who wants to treat their snoring, we offer a takehome screening device. It tracks the person’s sleep to see if an oral appliance could help them. Many patients who are CPAP-intolerant are also good candidates for an oral appliance. What is a Personalized Dental Plan? A Personalized Dental Plan is what a patient will leave with after their exam and consultation with me. It is like a roadmap to health. I give my patients the possibilities, then they tell me if and when they want to take care of the problem. I firmly believe that by uncovering potential problems and prioritizing these for my patients, it empowers them to make the best decisions. I want to encourage health instead of manage disease. Coming to her practice, you will discover the cornerstone of what she calls “Dentistry that’s beyond Exceptional.” Dr. Laurie believes that creating your Personalized Dental Plan is a better approach and overall strategy for achieving your goals. Providing dentistry that exceeds your expectations takes the proper state-of-the-art diagnostic tools. The standard dental X-ray film is no longer

ideal, so she uses digital imagining, and this is only one of many specialized dental tests. Not only will you discover the overall health of your teeth, gums and jaw joints (TMJ), but she will also employ a specialized computer to analyze your bite. This data will be recorded in your Personalized Dental Plan.

Dr. Laurie says that the patients who come to see her come from all walks of life. What they have in common is a desire to be healthy and keep their teeth for a lifetime. They also refer their friends and family because they have been treated with kindness and have been listened to, which is the core of Dr. Laurie’s practice.

Dr. Laurie will present your Personalized Dental Plan to you and discuss your options. She does not believe in making all-or-nothing recommendations. Your options will be thoroughly discussed, as she wants you to be an active participant. Your opinions and desires matter.

Dr. Cha D

r. Jennifer Cha is the president of the Dental Implant Institute of Las Vegas. Along with her husband, Dr. Leon Chen, who is also an accomplished periodontist, they opened the institute in 2003. A respected dentist, she specializes in periodontal surgery. Dr. Cha is also a Fellow and Diplomat of the International Board of Oral Implantologists, one of three dentists in Las Vegas to be awarded this honor. Working with her associates, she offers advanced dental care through revolutionary procedures, such as the 5 in 1 Technique, Sinus Lift and Vertical Translation, all procedures developed by the Dental Implant Institute. These procedures are less invasive, cause very little to no pain, have a short-term recovery and provide a much higher rate of success. Another innovative surgery developed by Dr. Chen is the hydraulic sinus, a very sophisticated technique mastered by Dr. Cha. The hydraulic sinus lift technique gives the dentist the ability to place implants simultaneously in the sinus with very minimal pain. Traditionally, implants cannot be placed near the sinus, since the tissue is not thick enough to withstand the procedure. But with this technique, Dr. Cha can go through the same hole where the tooth was removed, gently lift the tissue (which is the membrane that lines the sinus) and then add bone to create enough space to place the implant under the membrane of the sinus. The implant works like a tent, keeping the membrane elevated. It takes about four months for the implant and bone to integrate.

Specialty: • Periodontics • Periodontal Surgery • Dental Implants • Bone regeneration

A dental implant is a titanium screw that is placed in the jaw bone. Its purpose is to replace the missing root of a tooth. There are many types of dental implants, which vary in shape and architecture. Dr. Cha assists in designing implants that combine the best features of the varying systems, which helps both simplify the surgical process and shorten the chair time for the patient. The whole process of placing the implant can take only a matter of minutes. This technique has a faster recovery and a higher rate of success than other methods. Everyone is a candidate for dental implants, but getting the procedure done requires an implant specialist with expertise in dental implants and bone regeneration. When not working, Dr. Cha is involved with several charitable organizations including the American Heart Association, Diabetes Foundation and AIDS Foundation. She is also a published author in numerous scientific journals and an international lecturer on dental implants and periodontics.

ellHealth Medical Group is an integrated network of doctors, nurses and medical specialists ready to provide the best in health care. While regular checkups are recommended, information is also important to maintaining overall good health.

What forms of birth control are most efficient and convenient to use as a 22 year old? I think that the most efficient and convenient birth control for women in their early 20s would be a long acting reversible form of birth control. These include the Nexplanon, which is effective for three years and any of the Intrauterine devices. There are three intrauterine devices, one for three years another for five years and the last for 10 years. These are convenient because once placed correctly you don’t have to worry about birth control for a number of years. What does an abnormal pap smear mean? An abnormal pap smear means that you may have precancerous changes on your cervix. A pap smear is a screening exam for cervical cancer. If treated appropriately, cervical cancer can be prevented. Is it common for a 48 year old to continue getting UTI’s even after hitting menopause? Urinary tract infections can reoccur with postmenopausal women. This typically happens because of decreased estrogen in the urethral and vaginal mucosa. Urinary tract infections can be prevented with increased hydration, the avoidance of holding urine and post coital voiding. Estrogen vaginal cream may be helpful in the prevention of urinary tract infections in postmenopausal women.

Jay Hsu, M.D. Cardiology

How does high blood pressure relate to cardiovascular disease? Do I need to worry about this as 29 years old who is active? High blood pressure adds to the wear and tear of blood vessels, resulting in damage, setting the stage for inflammation and cholesterol plaque formation. This process increases the long-term risk of strokes and heart attacks, so early treatment can help reduce your risk. Treatment may involve dietary changes emphasizing low-salt intake, consistent aerobic exercise, smoking cessation and medications. I would recommend creating a treatment plan now that you could use for the rest of your life. I wake up after extreme nightmares short of breath and my heart pumping extremely fast. Is this going to affect my heart in a bad way? Extreme nightmares affect the body in the same way as stressful experiences like narrowly avoiding a car accident, getting into a heated argument, or even watching a very intense movie. Adrenalin may be released, and the heart and breathing mechanisms are activated. This generally is not a concern. However, a slightly different scenario of waking up with racing heartbeats with shortness of breath in the absence of nightmares may indicate a sleep issue, such as sleep apnea.

I’m almost 30, and I have no sex drive. Is this common? Loss of sex drive in young women is unfortunately common. Loss of sexual desire is known as hypoactive sexual desire syndrome. One study of women ages 18 to 59 found that a percent reported that lack of interest in sex. In women, sexual problems are a combination of physical and mental factors. Common causes of HSDD include inter-personal relationship issues, medical problems, low testosterone and sociocultural influences. There are several potential treatment options that include relationship and other medical treatments. Work with your partner and healthcare provider in identifying ways to put the spark back into your love life. As a 53-year-old female, what can I do to better manage my weight after losing my fast metabolism from my youth? Weight management in women in their 50s can be very challenging. As we age, our metabolism does decrease. It is important to be evaluated by your primary care provider to make sure your hormones are in proper balance. Evaluate your diet. Be sure to avoid processed foods sugars and high amounts of saturated fats. It is important to eat enough calories as well. Eating too little can result in further weight gain. Adequate hydration must be maintained. Physical activity should be done most days and should include cardiovascular exercise as well as weight training. Working together with your provider, you can help boost your metabolism and improve your overall health.

I am in my mid20s and have no kids, but I leak a little every time I run, sneeze or laugh. How can this be possible and what do I do? First and foremost, before we make any diagnosis, we have to make sure that you do not have a urinary tract infection, as this could be the sole cause for your leakage. Once we rule that out, you may have stress urinary incontinence. Risk factors for SUI include but are not limited to being Caucasian or Hispanic race, smoking, obesity, chronic coughs, pregnancy and childbirth. If you are diagnosed with SUI, there are multiple treatments, which you can discuss with your doctor for the management of your condition.

Yarini Quezada, M.D. Urogynecology What can I do as a 34-year-old who’s had three kids to treat an extremely dry vagina. I’ve tried creams and drinking more water but I am at a loss. Breast-feeding can cause a hypo-estrogenic (low estrogen) state, which can lead to vaginal dryness. This is self-limiting, once you are done breast-feeding, your symptoms will go away. There are several over the counter lubricants that can also be tried as well for symptom relief. If this doesn’t work, visit your doctor to see causes and other treatment options.

Are Your Eyes BOTHERING YOU THIS TIME OF YEAR? BY DR. CYNTHIA PAYNE

W

hile eye problems can occur any time of the year, with springtime comes an increase of itchy, red, puffy and watery eyes. A variety of conditions can cause these symptoms, including allergies, dry eye, bacterial and viral pink eye, as well as skin conditions such as an overpopulation of bacteria or skin mites at the lid margin. Allergy eyes are itchy, watery, puffy, red and may have a dark under-eye appearance. They also may have dry eye symptoms. Frequent use of artificial tears, cold compresses and over-the-counter allergy eye drops can be very effective. Environmental modifications to help with allergy eyes include bathing before bedtime, using air purifiers and keeping doors and windows closed. If the itching is severe, there may be a need for prescription allergy and/or steroid eye drops to make the eyes more comfortable. Symptoms associated with dry eye, in addition to itching, may include burning, watering, irritation, sandy/gritty sensation, increased light sensitivity and blurred and/or fluctuating vision. Many times, these symptoms can be alleviated by using a quality artificial tear frequently throughout the day. Keeping the body properly hydrated, using a humidifier and taking an omega-3 supplement can also be helpful. In more extreme cases, prescription medications to decrease inflammation of dry eye or punctal plugs to increase tear volume on the eye may be necessary. Lipiflow treatment helps by expressing the Meibomian oil glands in the lids to improve the oily layer of the tear film and prevent the tears from

evaporating so quickly. Both bacterial and viral pink eye (conjunctivitis) will have the symptoms of itching, mucous discharge, watering, redness and irritation. These eyes may also be very light sensitive. Again, cold compresses and artificial tears can make the eyes more comfortable. Cleaning the eyelids and lashes to remove mucous and bacteria will also help. A prescription antibiotic eye drop will help resolve a bacterial infection. You should have your eyes evaluated by an eye doctor if you have any of these symptoms. If you wear contact lenses, discontinue wear and see your eye doctor immediately. When bacteria overpopulate at the lid margin in the lashes or mites called Demodex infest the lashes, one of the most common symptoms is itching in the lash line of the eyelids. This can also produce dry eye

symptoms and crusting or flakes on the lids and lashes. The lid margins may look swollen, red and irritated with chronic advanced infestation. Treatment consists of cleaning the eyelids and lashes with a special formulated cleanser and possibly steroid/antibiotic combination eye drops or ointment. While this is an overview of possible causes and relief, always consult with your doctor with any concerns or continuing eye problems. Coping with Menopause BY TANIA MOLINA, SYMMETRY IN MOTION

very woman experiences menopause differently. For some, the symptoms are mild and pass quickly. For others, it is an explosion of hot flashes and mood swings. Women can adopt lifestyle changes to help cope with the changes occurring in their body. Here are some tips including fitness and stress reduction.

and ballroom are great for flexibility and coordination. The American Heart Association reports that as women enter menopause, their risk of cardiovascular disease increase. In addition to fitness, a balanced diet is just as important during this phase. Eat more fruits and vegetables and add more lean proteins. Eat foods high in fiber and omit sugar and dairy.

Regular exercise is an excellent way to relieve stress and enhance your overall quality of life. Pilates, in particular, is a great way to maintain ideal weight and loss of muscles mass. Pilates has a unique ability to make a body stronger and is a form of low intensity resistance training, combine with movement that is organized with all angles and shapes so many different muscles are targeted. Osteoporosis risk skyrockets after menopause because of lack of estrogen so strength training is especially vital.

Set realistic, attainable, specific goals to avoid frustration. Don’t simply declare, “I am going to exercise more.” Tell yourself, “I will walk for 30 minutes during lunch.” Take a new fitness class or try a new sport. Recruit a friend or spouse as a buddy to help keep you motivated. Yes physical fitness and a healthy diet is essential but do not forget to exercise your creativity. Now is an optimal time to indulge in a artistic outlet such as painting, ceramics or knitting. Eat delicious, healthy meals. Laugh until you cry. Revitalize and rejuvenate.

It’s No Secret THE CHANGING FACE OF PHILANTHROPY I

t is no secret in the nonprofit world that the way people give is evolving. According to Jeanne Hamrick, a Las Vegas native and senior executive with the consulting firm The Fundraising Resource Group, “Changes are happening on both sides of the equation; nonprofit organizations are operating more like businesses and donors see themselves more as investors.” Today’s donors want to see a return on their investment and are more concerned with the long-term success of the nonprofit. “This is a mindset you see not just with major financial donors but also with younger, upand-coming volunteers,” Hamrick said. “People expect more out of nonprofit organizations today in terms of effectiveness, efficiency and accountability.”

clients so that we eventually work ourselves out of a job. Our goal is to address an organization’s immediate needs while mapping a strategic course for future sustainability and self-reliance.

Hamrick works with nonprofit organizations, helping them to focus on high-impact, highreturn activities including major gift fundraising, planning and feasibility studies and capital campaigns. “Our approach to problem-solving is very strategic and is based on solid business and fundraising practices,” Hamrick said. “Another one of our big differentiators is our ‘teach-you-tofish-philosophy.’ We are committed to training our

Hamrick, whose passion for her work and for the missions of the nonprofits she works with is obvious, explained her start in the world of professional fundraising was “more by accident than intent.” When Hamrick’s daughter was attending Bishop Gorman High School, the same high school Hamrick graduated from, she started volunteering in the development office. When it was determined that the school needed to be moved from its previous location to a new, modernized building, Hamrick was instrumental in developing the capital campaign to relocate the school’s campus to its current location. “With the help of Daniel Neel [president of The Fundraising Resource Group] and his team, I ended up running the campaign and raised $52 million for the school. I am very passionate about our community. I was born and raised here in Las Vegas. I absolutely believe that we have one of the most generous communities in the United States.”

“Our work is about helping organizations grow support for their mission so they can serve more of those in need. Part of this is about identifying donors with the capacity to give more and understanding their needs. People are motivated to give for many different reasons. Often people get involved in causes that has either directly touched their lives or the lives of those close to them. Numerous studies have demonstrated the direct connection between giving [time or money], happiness and better health.”

Hamrick’s advice to the community is, “We are really at an important crossroad for our community. Generosity in Las Vegas continues to grow but we lost some momentum in the most recent financial downturn, so I would urge people to consider getting involved with a charity of their choice. Find a cause that taps into your interests and passions, and figure out how you would like to help.” Getting involved can mean a lot of

Jeanne Hamrick

“Today’s donors want to see a return on their investment and are more concerned with the long-term success of the nonprofit.” different things from volunteering or serving on a board, to donating goods or services, to donating money. Small gifts of any kind can make a big difference. It’s all about caring, giving back and really sharing. According to Hamrick, philanthropy today is increasingly becoming a very thoughtful, deliberate and interactive process. “Donors expect more today, even when they are giving at lower levels. Rather than just giving an organization $20, it’s about buying three ducks for a family in a third-world country. Donors want to choose and know how their donation is making an impact.” For more information, visit thefundraisingresource.com or call 888.522.1492.

Land Rover Las Vegas GIVES BACK TO THE COMMUNITY BY RICK NELSON, MARKETING/EVENTS/SALES, LAND ROVER LAS VEGAS PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE WEISS AND MICHAEL BOSCIA

T

he staff and management of Land Rover Las Vegas appreciate all of their customers and the reception received when the car dealership opened in Southern Nevada. Land Rover Las Vegas gives back with special events and donations to benefit the community. To help animals, twice a year, Land Rover Las Vegas hosts Models for Mutts to benefit the Nevada Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The front of the dealership is cleared and a 30-foot fashion runway is set up 2 feet off the floor. There is a DJ spinning the hits with smoke, lights and lasers. The fashion features beautiful models that walk the runway with adoptable dogs from the shelter. Previously, event sponsors included Whole Foods that provided the food for the models, photographers, hair and make-up artists as well as gift bags. DW Bistro served the hand-passed hors d’oeuvres, and various vendors had products on display and donated gifs that were all raffled off. All of those proceeds benefited the Nevada SPCA. The next Models for Mutts event will be held May 6. Another spectacular event is the Land Rover

Las Vegas Sunset Dine and Drive. Sales staff invites couples that are customers. The last event was located at the top of an operating gypsum mine about 4,000 feet above Las Vegas with a breathtaking 180-degree view of the city. Whole Foods donated all food, and the head chef from Del Frisco’s Steakhouse, Fernando Gurerro, along with his staff prepared their signature steaks with all the trimmings. Wonderful local acoustic guitarist Glenn Nowak provided the entertainment. Dinner was served during a dramatic sunset over the Southern Nevada skies. After dinner, guests were treated to a drive-through mine tour in a maze of dusty gypsum caverns. Del Frisco’s and Whole Foods also donated gift cards that were auctioned off, with all of the proceeds going to The Shade Tree Women’s Shelter. Land Rover Las Vegas will host more events in 2016 as well as participate in other organized walks and races to benefit various charities throughout Southern Nevada. I Am a Proud Pet Mom THE THINGS WE DO FOR OUR “KIDS” BY RIKKI CHEESE, NEWS ANCHOR FOR KTNV, CHANNEL 13

Y

ou don’t have any kids.” Those words from my sister are one of the reasons why I’ve become a Pet Mom.

Maybe my advice was unsolicited from the day my niece and nephew were born, but that statement irked me. I helped raise her and many other women’s children.

Michael. After all, they were my kids. They just happened to have four legs, fur and fangs. I knew I was in pretty deep when I started calling the two I have now “the babies,” but I am far from alone. Americans are increasingly treating pets like children, and spending on them the same way.

I am nurturing, and I wanted to start a family of my own. To test the waters before becoming a single parent, I adopted a puppy—a huge Akita puppy. Akitas don’t stay small for very long. One day he weighed 10 pounds. The next day he weighed 130. OK. I’m exaggerating. But he seemed to bulk up overnight.

How many of us have pictures of our fur-kids on our smart phones? I spent a fortune on professional studio photos because my tribe is notoriously hard to shoot. My co-workers have photos of their two-legged kids in their cubicles. Pictures of my four-legged ones surround my work area.

That’s when I got it. It’s easy to criticize someone else’s parenting if you’re not doing it yourself. Midnight feedings. Whining. Pooping. Grooming. Training. Challenging conversations.

Their insurance premiums are higher than mine. Getting them groomed costs more than getting my hair done. Socializing them took five sleepless months of carting them to doggie day care separately, then together. Special turf adorns the backyard so they can play without getting too dirty. Baby gates inside keep them safe.

I did what so many parents do with their firstborn. I disciplined Tundra like a drill sergeant. After all, he was an extension of me. He had to be perfect. I raised him, but I should have taken more time to just enjoy him. I tried to make up for that mistake with my second Akita. Sean-Michael was so spoiled; he once walked away from teriyaki prime rib. He sniffed it, flipped his tail and walked away with an attitude. That’s when I realized I was anthropomorphizing. It’s a tongue-twisting term for treating an animal as if it is human. As my sister did with me, I resented and rejected all advice on how to raise Tundra and Sean-

Other families spend evenings and weekends at sporting events. We practice at PetSmart and take field trips to Fremont Street downtown. We have play dates. We hang out at a dog gym and the dog park. Akira likes to shop for makeup at Sephora. Apollo prefers the dollar stores. Now that I’m a Pet Mom, I can appreciate what my sister was really saying. Children are a lot of work. So are puppies.

“After all, they were my kids. They just happened to have four legs, fur and fangs. I knew I was in pretty deep when I started calling the two I have now ‘the babies...”’

Females Fearless

BY DEBBIE HALL

These incredible women who are residents of Southern Nevada demonstrate their love for their families as well as their community. One Fearless Female has devoted countless hours in volunteer work to honor her grandmother living with a chronic medical condition. Even with the passing of her husband, another Fearless Female persevered in a male-dominated industry and succeeded. Helping homeless and at-risk teenagers is the calling for another Fearless Female. These three women demonstrate that love of family can be incorporated professionally, which makes them Fearless Females.

here are many misconceptions about homeless teens, but Lisa Preston, executive director at Street Teens, can explain the facts. According to Preston, Nevada has the highest number of teen pregnancies in the country. The number of throwaway, runaway and “couch-surfing” youth (especially the pregnant and/or parenting population moving from one friend’s home to another) is estimated to be in the thousands. Las Vegas also has the highest dropout rates in the nation and was recently ranked 50th in education.

Helping at-risk teens grow and develop

“Homeless youth do not have a good quality of life,” Preston explained. “In general, basic survival needs are not being met, and any thought of the future is non-existent.” By providing basic needs services, such as food, as well as a safe respite off the streets, Street Teens is helping to improve youths’ quality of life. Once a youth is fed and clothed, issues such as health, calling home, getting a job, going to school or obtaining a GED can be addressed. Street Teens, a 501(c)3 corporation founded in January 2000 by husband and wife David and Rosario Mereaux, was established as a volunteer organization to serve Las Vegas’ runaway and throwaway adolescents. However, the organization was prohibited from providing any service to any minor without parental consent. Still, outreach teams were on the streets surrounding the University of Nevada, Las Vegas looking for teens in need. On October 1, 2001, the “Right to Shelter” law went into effect, and since then, Street Teens has grown to provide a safe haven seven days per week. The Sanctuary, a full-service drop-in center, serves at-risk and transient youth with a variety of programs designed to meet their basic needs and create sustaining self-sufficiency. Preston explained that many of the teens are transient and involved in survival sex. Their sexual activities put them at great risk for contracting HIV

and possibly AIDS. It is estimated that within 48 hours of the time a homeless teen can no longer stay with friends, he or she will have engaged in at least one act of survival sex. By building trust, the street outreach volunteers can eventually bring the teen into the dropin center for services. Volunteers offer hot meals, showers and clean clothes. Street Teens has partnered with the Health District, where any teen can receive a full range of services including treatments for sexually transmitted diseases, prophylactics, family planning assistance and sexual education. Born and raised in Canada, it was a professor who was also an attorney who inspired Preston. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts in criminology and sociology as well as a certificate in nonprofit management. In 2003, she moved to Las Vegas to accept her current position at Street Teens. “At the time, I thought I would try it for a year and see how I liked it. Turns out, I love it, and 13 years later, I am still here and very much enjoying what I do,” she said. Patricia Johnston, who was the board president of Street Teens, was her mentor. “We have worked hand and hand all these years together, and she is definitely my greatest supporter.” Preston has also mentored others, including Chelsea Moe, who came to Street Teens as a University of Phoenix intern. Once her internship ended, an offer of employment was extended to her, and she accepted. “She has so much potential and is wonderful with our kids. We are very lucky to have her as part of the team at Street Teens, and it has been wonderful to help her along in her career.” Personally, Preston has two children, Cole, age 5, and Riley, age 3, who keep her very busy. Parenting her own family while assisting with other teens is one of the many ways that Lisa Preston demonstrates being a Fearless Female.

ikki Ferraro, like many women, juggles several facets of her life. She is one of the owners of Pizza Forte with locations in Sunset Station and Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. She is a wife and mother of two children. Ferraro is also president on the board of Aid for AIDS of Nevada with a dedication to AFAN for a personal reason. Her grandmother on her mother’s side, Barbara Farrell, has been living with HIV since 1995, and her step-grandfather died from AIDS in 1994.

FearlessFemales

Nikki Ferraro Educating the community about HIV and AIDS

Born and raised in Niagara Falls, New York, at the age of 5, she went to live with her grandmother and step-grandfather. Ferraro was 9 years old when her step-grandfather was diagnosed with full-blown AIDS, and her grandmother tested positive for HIV a year later. After the death of her stepgrandfather and the cold reception they received in their small town, she and her grandmother moved to Las Vegas when Ferraro was 13. After Farrell remarried her first husband (Ferraro’s grandfather) two years later, the family moved to Wisconsin. After graduating from high school, Ferraro returned to Las Vegas. “I did a bunch of things after high school,” Ferraro explained. “College wasn’t for me. I dabbled in real estate and then decided to go into marketing.” Two weeks shy of her 21st birthday, Ferraro was hired at Mandalay Bay. After that, she opened and worked at Tao for seven years. Then she met her future husband. When Ferraro became pregnant with her first child, she decided a career in nightclubs did not fit her current lifestyle and quit. “We started talking about our dream of opening pizza shops, and our first location at Sunset Station has been opened.” She started volunteering with AFAN at the age of 18 and has been active with the organization for the past 16 years. Ferraro was asked to join the board on

her 30th birthday, was elected president last year and has one more year for her term. Ferraro will continue to serve on the board in other capacities and plans to always remain active. Two years ago, Ferraro and another board member started the women’s support group Mothers, Sisters, Daughters. “I am very proud of this group. There are two demographics that have a very difficult time walking through the doors of AFAN. One is Hispanics because they are very family oriented, which is deep-rooted in their culture. Women are the other one. They are embarrassed, they are afraid, they have children and they don’t want anyone to see them walk through the doors,” she stated. However, with many issues facing women, including social, medication and housing, it was decided to give women a chance to be free of children, drama and daunting responsibilities on the third Wednesday of the month for two hours. Meetings have included watching a movie with popcorn, seminars about health and wellness or road trips to places such as the Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens. According to Ferraro, “We want to keep this going since the rate of infection for women is so very high. So many women come in that are newly infected, so we want to give them this outlet. With this group, they can talk freely and openly without judgment and in confidence.” As for her grandmother, “She is in amazing health. She has been on the [HIV medication] cocktail for 24 years and is doing very well.” Married to Domenico “Mimmo” Ferraro, the son of Ferraro’s Italian Restaurant & Wine Bar owners Gino and Rosalba Ferraro, she combines her passion for her personal life, businesses and volunteer work at AFAN with dignity, grace and style. Nikki Ferraro is the essence of a Fearless Female.

tacey Ranieri, owner of Ranieri Construction, is a licensed general contractor and licensed Realtor who really enjoys building, remodeling and selling buildings in Las Vegas. She followed the path of her father, who was a superintendent for large construction firms. According to Ranieri, “He taught me how to hammer and make my own arrows for my bow when I was 7 years old.”

FearlessFemales

St acey Ranieri Building and selling Las Vegas

Raised in Salt Lake City and the Seattle area, she moved to Vegas at age 17 and graduated from Valley High School. She attended vocational school for manicuring, real estate and interior design and graduated trained in all three disciplines. Ranieri would meet the man she called “my soul mate, my husband, the love of my life, whom I was blessed to have 41 wonderful years with. He was a licensed general contractor, and I just melded right into it with him showing me how to do things. I picked everything up with ease.” As she explained, “My husband was my primary inspiration. He took me by the hand and taught me the trades that I utilize today. I can do everything required to build an entire home, such as concrete, framing, plumbing, electrical, roofing, drywall, tiling and painting, because he took the time to teach them all to me.” From 1974 to 2008, the company provided services primarily for custom homes, along with remodels, room additions, garage conversions and other renovations in the residential field. Ranieri Construction also had a contract with Home Depot for 10 years to provide door installations for three of its stores in Las Vegas. As a general contractor with a B2 license, she is qualified for residential and small commercial jobs. Ranieri currently specializes in kitchen and bath remodels as well as all living spaces. In fact, her company was selected by the HGTV network to complete a home remodel for its show “Vacation House for Free.” Ranieri did all this while her

husband was severely incapacitated with cancer to honor him and their years together. He would pass away from metastasized prostate cancer to the bones on St. Patrick’s Day. Today, she is surrounded by family including her mother, Mary Lee, daughter, Tasha, and two grandsons, Beckham and Braxton. Ranieri is an active member of The Women’s Club of Summerlin, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that raises funds to benefit women and children in the Las Vegas Valley. She also loves teaching her friends and other women how to assemble a kit, lay their own floor tile, mask and paint a room, build a garden planter, refinish furniture and other remodeling projects. Along with construction and real estate, Ranieri enjoys music and crafts. “As a child, I crocheted as well as played the cello and ukulele. I was in chorus and choir all through school and took art class, woodshop and home economics.” Other interests included tole painting, cake decorating, macramé, ceramics, porcelain doll making, painting and sewing. “I love creating most anything. I love to sing and even studied piano for three years in my 30s.I enjoy my rose garden and maintaining my landscape. Cooking is also something I enjoy. I use my creativity to replicate dishes I have in restaurants that I want to be able to have at home.” Most importantly, for those who are considering entering the field of construction, she encourages women to stay strong and not be intimidated by men. Ranieri advises others to take every opportunity to learn as much as possible about each facet of each trade. She should master and align herself with a professional tradesperson to mentor her. Once a woman is in the business, make certain she uses qualified, licensed subs for the work. Despite the hardships she has faced, the highs she has experienced along with the love and support of her family have helped Stacey Ranieri to always carry herself as a Fearless Female.

n business, making investments is what makes or breaks a company. Strategically investing in time and resources could make your business— or your career—wildly successful, and not doing so could result in getting left behind. This includes investing in you. Investing your time to learn a new skill, continue your education or embrace a trending technological advance is essential to personal and business growth.

An investment in you starts with learning a new skill. Whether you are trying to get a handle on new technologies and apps or become proficient in Excel, you have to dedicate yourself to mastering new skills. Practice makes perfect, and learning new skills should become habitual. Crafting a structured routine for learning a new skill and subsequently sticking to that routine will ultimately keep your professional skills timely and fresh. Knowledge is power, and the more you know about your business and the business world, the better. Continuing your education will put you and your business in a great position to stay up-to-date on business trends and be prepared for new challenges you might face. Enrolling in a business class to learn more about marketing, financial management tips or risk management, as examples, will ultimately give you the essential information you need to keep your business running smoothly.

“Knowledge is power, and the more you know about your business and the business world, the better.” Embracing technological advances is another great way to invest in you. Social media has become a staple in the modern age. It is essential for businesses to interact with customers online. Tried and true social media sites like Facebook and Twitter are great platforms for businesses to promote their brand, engage with shoppers and tailor their business to customers’ needs. Investing the time to understand these platforms and discover new ones, like Periscope and Pinterest, will help give your brand a distinct voice and attract more followers to your brand. At the Las Vegas Metro Chamber, we know your time is precious. Investing in learning a new skill, continuing your education or grasping a new social media platform could seem quite overwhelming and time-consuming, and sometimes expensive. The Metro Chamber has affordable ways to help. The Metro Chamber offers a variety of programs that can help you invest in the skills and resources you need to succeed in business. One of those resources is Chamber University, a free, interactive web series aimed at

highlighting the business skills and resources members need to grow their business. Every week a new skill or business topic is featured so our members can access new skills and need-to-know information. The spring semester is jam-packed with topics including building a better website for your small business and the certifications you need to become a womanowned or minority-owned business. Investing in yourself also means creating new opportunities for you and your business. The federal government spends approximately $500 billion every year contracting for products and services, and 23 percent of those dollars must be awarded to small businesses. The Metro Chamber is dedicated to connecting members with more opportunities to do business with government and the military. The chamber will be offering a new procurement workshop series where small business owners are able to learn first-hand from procurement specialists on how they can position their businesses to win these contracts. An investment in the Metro Chamber is an investment in you, as well as your business. Possessing a broad array of skills, continuing your education and staying up-to-date on technological advances will give you the extra edge you need to run a successful business. Marketing FIRST IMPRESSIONS REALLY DO COUNT BY RUTH LAUBER

I

have worked in marketing and sales for over 40 years and I am proud to say I have been very successful at it. I know that have been so many changes over the years, especially with the Internet and social media, but the same rules apply. There are several things I believe are important to help others grow their business and be a success. In this issue I am going to start by sharing my knowledge in creating success in sales and marketing, whether you are looking for new clients as a sales person or new clients for a business. I have applied these rules everyday of my life, both business and personal. My first rule is that first impressions count including websites and social media. First, face to face, will people like what they hear or see with their first impression of you? I advise everyone that when you get up in the morning, get ready and always dress for success. Look at yourself in the mirror and ask if this is what you want people to see, whether in an office or out making appointments. Your attitude comes across in your voice, personality and looks. What if you work virtually? Remember, people can still hear it in your voice. If you have an attitude of success, it will come through. What about Facetime, Skype or Periscope? People still form opinions visually

and audibly and you need to exude success no matter the medium. I do appreciate the fact that some businesses are more creative or casual in appearance. Artists dress differently than attorneys. Still, you have to feel good about yourself. Studies have been done by various universities that attitudes come through in how a person carries him or herself and speaks to others. An artist can be creative and still present him or herself as professional. I used to train salespeople and I would ask people in the class if they actually looked at themselves in the mirror before coming to class. I was amazed when people who make their living meeting with people face to face would answer “no.” I would dismiss them from class for the day. Everyone got the message. Another way people develop a first impression in today’s world is through social media. Companies employ people to check on potential clients, vendors, businesses and staff members through their social media profile. A first impression is what people read online. First and foremost, keep your private life private. There is no reason you need to post that you are sick, broke, in debt, getting a divorce, hung over or anything of a personal nature. Your profile, posts and photos should

always be professional. Facebook does offer the option to make a person’s page private, and it can set one up for only friends and family as well. However, the caveat is that once it goes on the Internet, it stays forever. Mark Cuban of ABC’s “Shark Tank” recently spoke out about mistakes people make on social media. He urges everyone to “clean up” their pages and immediately delete any unflattering or unprofessional photos and posts. It might take all day, but it is well worth it. Websites are another way of making a first impression. I am not speaking of design, but content. Are all of the words spelled correctly? Is proper grammar used? Websites represent you and are part of your first impression to the world. Confidence comes across in many ways. Whether you work in the field, in one specific place, virtually or online; present yourself in a way to appeals to people and exudes success.

What if takes us to a place that is beyond what we currently know. From one angle it is impossible to go beyond what is because anything we can name is contained in or exists within the what is. The other angle is until something exists then it cannot be found anywhere existing within what is or within all that is. What if is the vehicle that takes us to a place thinking outside the box. What if brings us through the doorway into the infinite range of our imagination.

any experts say that being at odds with what is causes stress. Others say that disappointment and frustration is caused by trying to squeeze the vastness of life into our limited perceptions of what life is or what we want to happen. When it comes to what is: anything that exists is part of All or Everything that exists. Everything is rooted in what is.

What if causes us to ask things like: What if I choose to become a better than I’ve ever been? What if I were more loving, compassionate and forgiving? What if I made sure that I complete my most important goals? What if I decide to say yes to all of the good that life has in store for me? What if I saw my life as a gift to be enjoyed instead of some problem needing to be solved? Now this brings us to the Manifest and the Unmanifest. Manifest means to come into existence or

expression. Unmanifest means it has not happened yet. The what is represents the manifest and the what if represents the unmanifest. Darkness represents unlimited potential (what if) and the light represents expressed potential (what is). Then there is the known (what is) and the unknown (what if). What if comes from a place called what’s possible. What’s possible is a place that knows no boundaries and has no limitations. Thanks to what if we are never trapped in, limited to or stuck in what seems to be or what is. Happy Blessings ♥♣♦♠

THE GREAT

QUESTIONS

Terry FATOR WRITTEN BY TERRY FATOR AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY PUPPET BOY ENTERTAINMENT

Walk us through a typical day in your shoes. Coffee first thing in the morning; a brisk walk with my wife, Angie, to get the blood flowing; check emails to make sure nothing is pressing that needs to be handled immediately, handle anything that needs attention; work out (six days a week … wait, am I under oath? If so, twice a week); relax (if I have the time); get ready for the show, head out to the show, do the show; come home and try to watch a movie with Angie; then bedtime with Angie laying on my chest. I think that’s our favorite time of day, when she lays her head on my chest and we drift off to sleep.

Have you ever purchased any As Seen on TV items? The truth is, I have been a sucker for infomercial stuff my entire life. I have, in the last few years, gotten better, but for Christmas last year, I got everyone in my family the pressure cooker from the TV ads. And I still have 30 BeDazzlers in the garage. Old habits die hard.

3

If you could destroy a grade-school photo of yourself, what year would it be and why?

4

While grocery shopping, what is your stick-in-the-cartwhen-no-one-is-looking item?

5 96

Pretty much all of them. The funny thing is that in the dozens of pictures the photographer took during the session, there was always the one time I would make a face and that is one they would choose to print. I just hope I’m never arrested because I know it would be a horrible mugshot photo they’d pick.

It’s Oreos and Mother’s Iced Circus Animal Cookies. When I told Angie this, she still had no idea that I had done that several times since we met earlier this year.

What is your favorite app on your smartphone? My favorite app is “Destiny” (for PS4). It really makes playing the game easier and more fun. W oman M aga zine .V egas | SPRING 2016

Do you ever play “tourist” in Vegas? If so, what is your favorite thing to do? I love to go to shows. I don’t have a ton of time, but when I do get a little time, Angie and I go to see the shows and do a celebrity chef dinner from the many restaurants to choose from around town.

What do you do to unwind and relax? I have a crazy schedule. I still tour as well as perform in Las Vegas for 160 plus nights. The show is over at 9, I get home at 9:30 and, after the adrenaline rush from a packed house and live audience, I don’t begin to come down until about midnight. That’s when it’s time to have a glass of wine with Angie and cuddle. That is the best way to relax in the world.

Does anyone ever mistake you for someone else? Brad Pitt? George Clooney? OK, no one is buying that. Without a doubt, Jeff Dunham. It’s not that often, but I do occasionally have someone tell me their favorite character I do is the Dead Terrorist. I politely explain that it’s a different ventriloquist. I think people get confused because their brains can’t grasp a bizzarro world where two ventriloquists are famous!
