et me be the first to admit, the first few months of Grace’s life were exhausting and the biggest adjustment of our lives. Between sleepless nights and web searching for every imagined newborn ailment, I was a worried wreck. Now Grace is rounding out 6 months, sleeping 11 hours a night, healthy and in wonderment at most everything. Our friends are saying that this is where the fun starts. Just in time for family gatherings and the holiday season. You are about to embark into our holiday and New Year issue. You’ll find holiday events, food and gift ideas for everyone, like a pair of Hanukkah leggings from Midrash Manicures (midrashmanicures.com/product/ hanukkahleggings). Remember, the New Year is around the corner. We’ve got you covered in our New Year, New You department. Careful thought about the content of this issue started in the summer with our team. Once again, our graphics crew exceeded our expectations with implementing a fresh new look sprinkled heavily throughout every article. Our website squad revamped WomanMagazine.Vegas with a new look that is more versatile for our readership and advertisers. In marketing and sales, Ruth Lauber and Kay Kolbo were out mingling at the best events all over town, nurturing

relationships and bringing back the most brilliant ideas to our office. Finally, publishing this issue was a blast with our trusty editor-in-chief, Debbie Hall. Through all the deadline stress, we maintained a lighthearted attitude and got the job done. Henry Ford, one of the leaders of teamwork, described it well: “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is a progress. Working together is success.” I am incredibly proud of the Las Vegas Woman magazine team and the accomplishments made in 2015. To educate, entertain & inspire,

Letter from THE EDITOR Hard to believe but it is the holiday season and the New Year. There have been so many changes and so many reasons to celebrate. This is Grace’s first holiday, and we are all looking forward to seeing it through her eyes. There will be the food, parties, decorations and the joy of experiencing it all. The New Year will be a time of reflection and creating something new. We have met some amazing women this year. I met our cover model, L Marie, at the opening of her business years ago, and I was thrilled when I found out she was going to be on the cover. She is an amazing entrepreneur, knowledgeable skin specialist, loving wife and doting mother. Superstar, wife and mother Celine Dion is actually a resident of Las Vegas and spoke with Las Vegas Woman magazine about her life and living in Southern Nevada. Our incredible stylist, Andeen Rose, interviewed the celebrity stylist to up-and-coming star Meghan Trainor (and others) about her world as well as some beauty tips for goodlooking hair. Speaking of beauty, Jennifer Florendo offers some great ideas in Goody Bag for gifts, including indulging ourselves. Our Fearless Females continue to inspire me. One is making great strides in health care with her cutting-edge research into multiple sclerosis. Another reaches out to children with horses, creating a bond between the two and witnessing a shift from despair to hope. For our third Fearless Female, education was the key for success for this young single mother who raised her family while going to school and working with others in need. Dr. Tiger Devore answers the question we all asked about what the Ashley Madison scandal really means about relationships. I recently attended the grand reopening of Pet’ographique, which specializes in pet photography. These photos capture what our pets really mean to us including our columnist Rikki Cheese. In fact, there is a portrait of her and her Akitas on the wall that shows the love between fur parents and their four-legged children. I wish everyone happy holidays and a bold, bright New Year.

eline Dion demonstrated her enormous talent, staying power and superstar status when she returned to headline in “Celine” at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace to standing ovations and the roar of enthusiastic audiences. What many might not realize is that Celine has called Las Vegas home for over 12 years. During a press conference, Celine spoke about the first time her husband, René Angélil, brought her and her parents to Las Vegas. “We were traveling for three hours straight and looking out of the window of the plane, and said, ‘But where are we going? Are we lost? It’s dark.’ He said, ‘No, no, no, no, no. Wait. You’ll see the diamond.’ I’m like, ‘What is he talking about?’ Then he said, ‘Here it is!’ You could see that shiny little diamond on the right hand side of the airplane. He said, ‘This is Las Vegas.’” On her first trip, she shopped and sunbathed all day long. Eventually, Celine and Angélil would get married and renew their vows in Las Vegas. As Celine explained, “We did the shows here. It became a home.” Now Las Vegas has become their primary home for their family. “We are making ourselves very comfortable. We love it here. We love the community. We love the support. I love where Las Vegas is going,” she said. Celine left her show almost a year ago to care for her husband, who has been diagnosed with throat cancer. As for dealing with her challenges, Celine

credits her family. “My children and my husband [are] my inner strength. I know I have something better [with them].” She explained, “[performing is] my inner strength, because my passion still exists … my love, my three children and my wonderful husband, want me to be here, because I’m not quite sure if I was ready to be here [return to the show]. We had to commit, and say, ‘Are we doing this? Are we not doing this?’ We decided together to do this, and here we are.” When the show “Celine” opened, the theater went dark, the audience became silent and bright white lights shined into the theater. On the screens were images of fans from around the world singing to Dion’s “I Drove All Night.” The montage combined videos of faces, landmarks and handwritten signs of love and adoration. She walked on stage as the curtain then “crashed” to the ground and whisked away as her 31 piece orchestra, band and back-up singers appeared. As she started singing, Celine showed that she has returned to Las Vegas in a big way. Fans will also be excited to know that there will be new music and album releases. Celine is working on both French-speaking and English-speaking albums with anticipated release dates in 2016 and 2017. As Celine explained, “It’s open for everyone, any songwriters, composers to send me their art [music] for me to be able to reach different goals [musically], keep going, evolve, have a good time and be passionate, because I would love to keep going.”

“Celine” at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace is scheduled for performances through Jan. 17, 2016. Tickets may be purchased in person at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace Box Office, by calling 866.320.9763, or online at thecolosseum.com or axs. com. Ticket prices are $55 to $250, and prices include live entertainment tax. All shows are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

artworks and accompanying words of inspiration. Kristof wants her book to provide encouragement for those who read it and view her art as another way to express hope. Art has also always been a way of escape and relaxation for Kristof, and she wants to share that with others.

After graduating, Kristof studied art at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, focusing on illustration. She would then move to Hawaii to study painting with two mentors, Eva and Americo Makk. “It’s because of them and their influence that I wanted to study art in Italy,” Kristof said.

Kristof is also venturing toward art therapy and believes it aids people with healing and relaxation. According to Kristof, art therapy is a very healthy way to express emotions and deal with difficult situations for children and adults. During painting classes, she enjoys seeing her students relax because of the focus that they put into their work. She witnesses how participants are amazed and proud of their personal artwork. With the intrusions of life, taking time to create something beautiful is a rare experience for most people.

Young and adventurous, she moved to Florence, Italy, to expand her education at the Studio Arts Center International. She would also look up to master artists in Italy and was fortunate to find them. One was Joseph Sheppard, who is also an author of 17 books including “Learning from the Old Masters.” Kristof was honored to be able to study with him in his studio. The other artist was Madam Simi, who was 90 years old at the time and teaching from her bed. “We had to bring our drawings to her for her to critique them,” Kristoff explained. “But she is an amazing artist, and I learned so much.” Also while in Italy, Kristof was able to use sketchbooks and documents that were archived in basements of some of its museums. She was able to explore the various famous works that Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci had done. As a growing artist, being able to physically touch these pieces was a truly remarkable experience for her. Her time in Italy truly enhanced and elevated her own work.

Arts Guide BETI KRISTOF Lifelong artist shares her creations with others BY EMILY GELBART

Kristof wants her book to provide encouragement for those who read it and view her art as another way to express hope.

Now based in Las Vegas, Kristof’s works are shared and shown by collectors and galleries from all over the world. Working in oils, her art is mainly figurative, floral and animal portraits. Her coffee table book, “Persephone and Polka Dot Shoes,” features 80 original

Art centers Kristof and lets her reveal her heart and soul through her creations. There has never been a time that she was without art or could be away from it. Benefitting others also encourages her to keep working. In the Southern Nevada community, artists were invited to paint on sculptures, and she was selected. Kristof also participates in the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital annual gala held in Memphis. “I am honored to represent the community of Las Vegas and have my work be a part of this great organization.” She painted the sculpture for the 50th anniversary for St. Jude and will be participating in 2016. Kristof has partnered with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure (komen.org), offering her giclees on its website with a portion of the sale benefitting the foundation. She will be teaching at Eccoci Boca Park on Dec. 10 and will offer a drawing class at Desert Art Supply on Dec. 19. To get updates on Kristof’s workshops, showings and work as well as more information on her book “Persephone and Polka Dot Shoes,” visit betikristofart.com, like on Facebook and follow on Twitter.

Ever since she was a child, Beti Kristof knew she would be creative. Today, Kristof has made her dreams come true by becoming a celebrated artist and published author. She has also just accomplished another goal, finishing her screenplay.

United Way of Southern Nevada’s Champion for Children launch

U

nited Way of Southern Nevada’s Champion for Children launch brought Nevada First Lady Kathleen Sandoval, Mayor Carolyn Goodman and the community together on Children’s Day Nevada to help every child access a quality early education. If you have a young child at home, you may wonder, is preschool really necessary? Research has shown that the early years in a child’s life represent a critically important window of opportunity to develop a child’s full potential and shape key academic and social skills that determine a child’s success in school and in life. “Nevada has the fewest number of children enrolled in preschool,” said UWSN Vice President, Community Development Terri Janison. “With the support of our community, we can change that and offer every child an opportunity for an early education.”

22

W oman M aga zine .V egas | WINTER 2015-16

Developing high-quality early learning opportunities for children from the ages of 3 to 4 will increase kindergarten readiness and ensure children are on track to attain reading proficiency by the third grade. “Young children who are exposed to highquality early learning have a much greater chance at success in adulthood,” said First Lady Sandoval. “We are mobilizing parents, educators, advocates and community and business leaders to ensure quality early childhood education is a priority in the state.” “We are working closely with United Way to help more children and families access early education,” said Mayor Goodman. “All children deserve to have proper preparation to enter kindergarten ready to learn to read, write and do basic math. Only in this manner will high school graduation rates increase and will our community be able to attract more businesses and provide more job opportunities.”

“Young childre n who are expo sed to high-quali ty early learning hav e a much greater chan ce at success in adulthood ,” said First Lady K athleen Sandoval Studies found those who went to preschool had improved school performance with increased math and language abilities and were more likely to graduate high school and hold a job with higher earnings. For every dollar that is invested in early education, $7 can be saved in future costs related to social services and juvenile justice. To learn more, visit uwsn.org/champ4children.

Indulge in 3 decadent desserts over the holidays

I

t is the holidays and a time for decadent pastries, yummy sweets and amazing confections. A beloved poem, “Twas the Night Before Christmas,” rejoices as the children dream of “visions of sugar plums [that] danced in their heads.” For adults, embrace that inner child with these decadent desserts to delight your palate as you celebrate the end of the year before heading into the New Year.

WINE BERRY SHORTCAKE

NEW YORK STYLE CHEESECAKE

One of the restaurants of the late rock ‘n’ roll chef Kerry Simon, Executive Chef Eugene Santiago of Carson Kitchen has put his spin on a traditional dessert with the trendsetting infusion of lavender. The Wine Berry Shortcake, served with lavender cream and streusel, combines the tartness of berries with the sweetness of a streusel. While some might think of lavender as an aroma, it adds to the dessert with a hint of a spice that is both familiar and new. Carson Kitchen, located in the redeveloped John E. Carson Hotel, is part of the revitalization downtown Las Vegas. If going for lunch or dinner, sit at the counter and observe open kitchen.

Grimaldi’s Pizzeria offers an extensive dessert menu along with its entrees and full bar. Along with cannoli and tiramisu, its New York Style Cheesecake is a must-try dessert. Its signature cheesecake is made daily in house by master bakers. With a smooth, creamy cheesecake on handpressed graham cracker crust and garnished with a raspberry sauce, it’ll simply melt in your mouth. Grimaldi’s is a casual, family-oriented restaurant featuring pizza using handmade mozzarella cheese and dough, its own sauce recipe and a variety of toppings on a crispy and smoky thin crust. With five locations including two on the Las Vegas Strip, two in the northwest and one in Green Valley, it is a great place to hang out with out-of-town company, family and friends.

Jamie Stephenson and Marcella Melnichuk owners of The Juice Standard

The two founders and best friends for 15 years, Jamie Stephenson, CEO, and Marcella Williams, COO, both believe in their product as well as live the healthy lifestyle. As Stephenson explained, “When I moved home to be with my family, my mother explained there was one rule I had to follow and that was I could live there rent-free but I had to eat and drink only food made by my mother’s hands. My stepfather had been diagnosed with advanced colorectal cancer and given about seven months to live. In an effort to save his life, my mother totally changed our diet. We went completely macrobiotic as well as vegan. Juicing was an everyday part of our lives.” Stephenson saw the effects, and her stepfather lived longer with a better quality of life. While no longer vegan and hardcore macrobiotic, Stephenson remains an avid juicer and uses juice as a simple, effective way to maintain high nutrition and her health. Williams, who is the mother of three children and culinarian, became a juicer after a life-changing trip to Greece got her thinking about the value of eating for health. “I was blessed with the opportunity to travel to Europe and stay for a significant amount of time where I experienced a clean Mediterranean diet. It included weekly trips to the liaki (“farmers market”) and really allowed me a chance to get my family on a healthy path. While not vegan, we incorporate juice into our daily lives and have eliminated processed meats and foods.”

The Juice Standard uses juices and nut milks that are raw as well as organic and locally sourced produce (whenever possible) that’s been farmed sustainably and responsibly. Its juices are cold pressed, and there is no high pressure processing. Ingredients include greens such as kale, chard and spinach in nutrient-dense recipes. Roots are vegetables that have a little more natural sugar than other veggies such as beets and carrots, but when correctly combined with complementary vegetables with less sugar, roots are superior energy boosters. Clears are what The Juice Standard calls the ingredients that naturally float and flush while adding hydration and refreshment. Clears include lemon, watermelon and cucumber. Nut milk doesn’t contain dairy, but is liquid extracted from protein-rich cashews for bone-healthy magnesium and heart-healthy, monounsaturated fats. If ready for some juice, there are two locations open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Juice Standard 2530 St. Rose Parkway Henderson, NV 89074 702.979.9803 4555 S. A Perfect Afternoon

MAROON WINES IN NAPA VALLEY BY ANNIE SLIMAN

W

hen my husband Gary, and I arrived at Maroon Wines in August, we were incredibly surprised and pleased to see the vineyard gates are right next door to the Napa Valley Country Club. We like to golf as much as we like to taste wine. The Maroon Wines entry gates opened with a warm, welcoming feeling as we drove up and up the long drive. This winery is the perfect setting to relax, visit and taste some of Napa’s most delicious handcrafted wines. Paul Maroon, the winery owner, greeted us with several bottles of wine in his arms. What a lovely way to spend an afternoon, just the three of us, sipping wine and relaxing in the middle of his charming, rustic courtyard. We tasted many of the Maroon Wines while we took in the view of the sprawling 35-plus acres of vineyards. This was by far the lengthiest and most personal tasting experience we have had in two years. We really got to know each other, which really enhanced our wine tasting experience. The 2012 Maroon Pinot Noir has bright fruit aromas of strawberry and cherry, very nicely integrated with hints of vanilla oak. There are wonderful dried floral and cola tones on the nose as well. The palate is round with a medium body and moderate tannins framing the wine. The acidity is vibrant and lends the wine a freshness that nicely counterbalances the roundness of the palate. I rarely drink Pinot Noir, but Maroon’s Pinot is now in my collection. I have to say it won’t last for long. My husband claims the Malbec is his favorite of the Maroon Wines. That speaks volumes for Maroon Wines, as this was their very first Malbec, according to Kelly Darter, who is

the vineyard general manager. Originally a common blending grape and one of the five main Bordeaux wine varietals, Malbec is now known as the principal red grape of Argentina. It began appearing as a grape variety in its own right in the Napa Valley in the 1990s. The Malbec grape typically ripens midway through the growing season and produces small, intensely colored fruit. Maroon’s 2012 Malbec comes from 10-year-old vines, which are carefully farmed on the northeast slope of nearby Howell Mountain. The wine is big, dark and inky, with aromas of plums and dark, ripe berries. This is a rustic wine with powerful fruit. On the palate, the wine is rich and round, with a long, wonderful finish. My favorite is the 2012 Maroon Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. This Cab was harvested from Maroon’s home vineyard in the Coombsville District of Napa Valley. It is a little cooler in the southern end of the valley, and the winery uses this specific geography to ripen the grapes slowly and evenly. This wine is then aged in French oak barrels for 30 months. The resulting wine has the rich, alluring aromas of dark fruit and balanced oak. On the palate, it’s bold, showing dark fruit flavors, nicely balanced with rich and creamy oak tones. The finish is long and lingering and absolutely superb. We bought a few cases of all three different varietals. Enjoying them over the next months will remind us of the wonderful time we spent with Paul Maroon at his beautiful winery. Maroon Wines is located at 3565 Hagen Road, Napa, California. osarito Beach is a coastal resort city in the Mexican state of Baja California located approximately 30 miles south of San Diego. As for a place to stay while vacationing, Rosarito Beach Hotel is a Baja spa resort opened as a lodge for 90 years. The 500-room, full-service resort remains one of the most popular destinations offering old world grandeur, world-class restaurants, entertainment, lodging options and activities. The Casablanca Restaurant is located near the beach, bringing the flavors of colorful, balanced and exquisite dishes. Having a day at the spa at the Casa Playa Spa completes a relaxing vacation. When it originally opened in 1925, the Rosarito Beach Hotel was considered a vacation and health destination because the sea-swept air was both preservative and restorative. Early visitors appreciated the therapeutic effects of saltwater bathing and fresh ocean air. People were also drawn to the soul-satisfying aesthetics the seascape provided. The hotel’s oceanfront location gave early visitors 34

Golf is a main attraction in Baja with two championship clubs located on Baja’s Gold Coast. Bajamar, located just north of Ensenada, boasts of 27 holes of Scottishstyle links that play around and over the beautiful Pacific. The crashing waves and volcanic rock will demand the utmost in concentration from even the best golfer. Real del Mar, located on the northern part of the Gold Coast, offers canyon-style

LVW: When did you realize that hair was your passion and that you wanted to do this as a career? LM: When I was about 8 years old. I told my Mama that I was moving to Hollywood to do Julia Roberts’ hair. After watching “Pretty Woman” so many times and as she dropped her long red locks while standing on the fire escape, that’s the moment I fell in love with redheads. By the way, I have cut Emma Roberts’ hair (her niece), and I may surrender to that being as close to Julia as I get. LVW: When was the moment you realized you made it and were actually living your dream? LM: The moment I realized I was living my dream–I don’t think there is a specific moment. But days when I pull up to the salon, the blow dryers are roaring, and my books are full of clients; I get reminded how incredible it is to stand behind a chair. LVW: Along your path, who has been your inspiration? LM: I think there have been different layers of inspiration. From my faith and growing up around a different culture, I would still have to say my Mama. She marches to the beat of her own drum. She always reminds me that it’s all a gift. She isn’t afraid to challenge me and love me through it. I feel blessed to have such a beautiful example.

spend a lot of hours with a lot of people, but not all of them become a best friend or important person in my life. Lo (Lorien Meillon) makes me feel beautiful inside and out every time I get my hair done with her. She’s one of those real life angels.” —Meghan Trainor, singer and songwriter.

Graduating from Euphoria Institute, Meillon possessed the talent, passion and dedication to her craft. Las Vegas Woman magazine spoke with Meillon while she was on set with Meghan Trainor, who was filming her new music video, “Better When I’m Dancing,” for “The Peanuts Movie” soundtrack.

These are the stylists that make a difference; their work is featured in film, television programs and magazines. These stylists work their magic and cherish their guest sitting in their chair.

Las Vegas Woman: How did you end up working with Meghan Trainor? Lorien Meillon: I got the opportunity to work with Meghan through my great friend Alison Christian (celebrity makeup artist), who is Meghan’s makeup artist. We met at church and became great friends, especially since we both shared a great common love for the industry. One day she asked if I worked with tap extensions. When I said yes, she forwarded

Meghan’s people my information. Since the Grammys Awards 2015, I have had the pleasure of stepping into opportunities to style her for red carpet, music videos and shoots. It all comes down to the value of relationships and trust. LVW: What’s it like to be on set for a music video, and what preparation does it take? LM: Getting prepped for a music video can be fun, and even though you check off all the boxes to be set for success, you always have to be ready to fly by the seat of your pants. When prepping for a video, you always go off the treatment the director has created. I feel really lucky to be able to work alongside my good friend Alison. It really allows a space to get inspired for anything we are working on for Meghan.

LVW: What has been the hardest obstacle or challenge you have had to overcome? LM: There was a time when I compared my work and myself to others. It intimidated me so much. This uncomfortable space pushed me to grow and to discover what I had to offer. There is so much power in celebrating others’ talents. I am so grateful for the mentors and incredible seasoned stylists that have shared their craft. LVW: What has been your experience in the entertainment industry as it relates to standards of beauty? LM: My experience is that it has always been an open and creative space. I have found myself lucky to call Ken Paves Salon home whether behind the chair, styling for red carpet or on set. The one thing that always matters most is how we make our client feel. LVW: What surprises you the most about what you have managed to achieve in your career?

“Lorien is a visionary, a risk taker, and innovator and also has an incredible ability to put her client first. Lorien is not only passionate but also kind, generous and giving. She inspires me every day and I am proud to call her family.” - Ken Paves

LM: I don’t know if I’m so much surprised about what I’ve achieved, just in awe that I get to wake up every morning and do what makes me happy. August was my ninth year that I’ve been a part of this evolving industry. I hope to keep growing with it while putting my own touch on those who sit in my chair. LVW: What is one thing you have learned along your journey? LM: The biggest lesson is that no amount of worldly success will ever satisfy. The relationships along the way are priceless.

Ken Paves, owner of Ken Paves Salon

LVW: What is your must-have hair product in your kit that you can’t live without? LM: My must have hair product is 7 Seconds form UNITE Eurotherapy. It’s the one product that never leaves my kit. LVW: What advice would you give to a stylist right out of school? LM: Continue your education; always be open to learn and know that this industry has so much to offer. You can make your career whatever you want it to be. LVW: What projects are you currently working on? LM: Olive & Livinia is the biggest project in my heart, which I co-founded with my best friend and business partner Alexis Kuykendall. We’ve been working together for the past six years. The heartbeat of Olive & Livinia is a concept, philosophy and belief that giving back is exceptionally significant and invaluable. We have partnered with six charities, and the client gets to choose which charity will receive a portion of her payment.

In 2014, I entered Wella’s Charity Challenge, where we won third place for a grant of $1,000 and a priceless platform to raise awareness. LVW: What is your motto you live by? LM: “Success doesn’t have anything to do with the outcome. It’s all in the process.” Sometimes we tend to put so much focus on the outcome that we forget to love the process—to fully embrace the growing pains and the change, to risk and to trust that all is well. This motto is an everyday practice and, with a cup of coffee in hand, I try my best. Love, Proposals AND WEDDINGS Celebrate underwater with mermaids at Silverton Casino

T

here is always a time and place for love, proposing to that special someone and getting married. For those who share a love of water, the Silverton Casino offers two very special wedding packages that allow the couple to be surrounded by water in the middle of the desert. Its 117,000-gallon saltwater aquarium with fish, rays and mermaids can be a backdrop for a wedding ceremony. For those who would love to swim with the mermaids, there is an underwater ceremony package for two people to join in holy matrimony among the fishes in the aquarium. With this package, mermaids stand in as bridesmaids and 20 guests can sit outside to witness. The package also includes an officiate and a one night accommodation for the couple. The jacket is weighted, and the wedding dress and veil can be weighted as well for an additional fee. Silverton Casino provides the gear and full safety team. For those who want to stand on land surrounded by the blue waters, the aquarium package for the wedding ceremony includes an officiate, seating for up to 20 guests, rehearsal and onsite coordination. Enhancements such as photos, champagne toasts, cocktails and dinner can be added to both packages. One of its mermaids, Ari, has personally been a part of countless wedding proposals, underwater weddings and surprise birthdays. “Each experience is unique and leaves an imprint on my heart, but nothing can compare to the feeling I get from the amount of people who travel from all over the world to come see

the show. Seeing the children’s faces light up as we flip and twirl, they are in complete awe, and it truly warms me,” she explained. Training since she was very young and competing in the local, nationally ranked synchronized swimming team, the Nevada Desert Mermaids, she joined Silverton Casino as an adult. Ari loves being a part of the Silverton mermaids. “Underwater there’s no sense of time, no rush, technology or social media that have become everyday distractions. It’s a much more peaceful world, and although I have been swimming in the aquarium for six years, it reminds me to take in the beauty that surrounds me and be appreciative.” She can stay underwater for long periods because “ever since I could remember, I have always felt the most comfortable underwater, and I have always been extremely fascinated with the ocean. There couldn’t be a more perfect job for me; being in the aquarium only feels natural.” Silverton Casino combines the comfort of an upscale lodge with a full-service casino, an array of restaurants, live entertainment, beautifully remodeled guestrooms, live gaming tables, over 1,600 slots and video poker machines. Silverton Casino also offers affordable vacation packages, free shuttle transportation to McCarran International Airport and the Strip and an adjoining 165,000-square-foot Bass Pro Shops flagship store. New Image ADVANCED LASER SKIN CENTER What would a new you look like? BY GINAROSE KIMBALL

A

s the New Year approaches, many realize that they did not accomplish many goals over the year and are another year older. While the advice of eating healthier, exercising regularly, sleeping more and reducing stress is a great place to start, it takes commitment and a lifestyle change to facilitate that change and improve looks. Clinical research over the last decade continues to show the connection between how people look and how they feel. If someone feels overweight and tired, of course being thinner and regularly exercising will help someone to feel better. But what about the face? People communicate with their face all the time. Everyone judges others’ faces and gets judged by how they look. What can one do about their face? One can use makeup, jewelry, clothes and other accessories to enhance beauty and detract from flaws, but those are short-lived and will not cover up or improve forever. There are many procedures to help people look better.

Laser treatments, body contouring treatments and injectable treatments can provide quick and sustainable results that enhance the look of faces. Science has shown over and over again that the better one looks, the better they feel. Is the cost, time and effort worth the benefit of looking and feeling better? Each and every person has to weigh the cost versus benefit for their individual situation. Many are not even aware of the treatments that could enhance how one looks and feels. New Image is a full-service laser skin center with laser trained medical aestheticians, providing skin resurfacing, skin tightening, skin photo facials with IPL, body contouring treatments that shrink fat and simultaneously tighten skin, and virtually painless hair removal with the latest technology. Patients can look years younger with either laser treatments, injectable fillers for lips,

cheeks and nasolabial folds, Botox® Cosmetic treatments for wrinkles or a combination of all. Surgery stretches skin to a thinner, more unnatural look, but laser actually produces more collagen to replace collagen lost through aging, providing a more natural, youngerlooking skin. Laser treatments range from mild effects requiring multiple treatments with no downtime or discomfort to partial or full skin resurfacing treatments requiring from 4 to 10 days of down time. There are Cutera lasers that can do laser Genesis to reduce pore size appearance, reduce wrinkles and tighten skin. Titan XL is used for deep tightening. Another great laser treatment is Cutera’s truSculpt and is used for body and facial contouring. The latest in laser hair removal is the excelHR and is excellent for the face and body. IPL is used for sun damaged skin and pigmentation correction. Pearl Fractional is good for partial skin resurfacing. The newest technology in laser resurfacing is the J-Plasma by Bovie and

Science has shown over and over again that the better one looks, the better they feel. is used for a more aggressive skin resurfacing and deep tightening effect. As people age or lose weight, facial fat is lost, making people look tired and older with sagging facial skin. Fortunately, despite reality television shows displaying over-the-top injections and fillers for visual appeal effect, there are Allergan products such as JUVÉDERM® and JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC that can restore facial volume and give a more youthful appearance, which can last up to two years. Botox®, a purified protein derivative, not a systemic toxin, usually provides three to four months of facial muscle relaxation, producing a youthful appearance as well. Many people combine the injectable fillers with Botox® and laser treatments for a longer lasting effect.

For many, these treatments help them look better immediately and propel them into changing their lifestyle into a healthier one. With the holidays and New Year, plan to look better for all the pictures to be taken with family and friends. Here is to a new you. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year. Dr. Michael Mall is the medical director of New Image Advanced Laser Skin Center and is a Medical Concierge Doctor. He limits his medical practice to a maximum of 600 members, and his concierge patients benefit with 30-minute same- or next-day office appointments and 24/7 access to Dr. Mall’s personal cell number as well as the cell numbers of his medical assistants. Patients enjoy a full suite of laboratory screenings with a full-time in-house phlebotomist, so they will never have to leave his office. In addition, he offers a myriad of personalized programs such as age management, nutritional programs, hormone replacement programs for both men and women, weight loss programs and smoking cessation programs. He offers treatment for both acute and chronic medical conditions.

A New Year A NEW YOU Pole Fitness Studio: Transforming your body physically and sensually PHOTOGRAPHY BY LAUREN ELDIK OF STUDIO CLICKS

P

ole Fitness is not just a craze or fad. Pole Fitness is a fun, empowering way to connect internally both physically and emotionally. After the holidays comes the desire to make THIS the year to eat better, get into better shape and just improve in all areas of life. But many look at gyms, research workout routines, talk to personal trainers and just get overwhelmed. Pole Fitness allows women (and men) to explore their strength, agility, sensuality and develop a mind and body connection.

Continuing to expand this concept is Fawnia Mondey, owner of Pole Fitness Studio and Pole Expo, who has pioneered Pole Fitness and the art of pole dancing. Mondey is also a worldrenowned pole dance instructor and performer. “Pole dancing is a great way to lose weight and build muscle while having fun,” Mondey stated. “It is definitely a challenge, and it doesn’t get old and boring. It is creative as well.” As she explained, it is the chance to find an “inner dancer” that people may have forgot as they grew older as well as the chance to explore the joy of moving to the beat of song. “With pole dancing, you are challenged by lifting your own body weight on the pole, so it is very anaerobic. You are also moving constantly, so it becomes an aerobic activity. Pole Fitness is also great for flexibility.” Originally from Canada, Mondey loved to run, draw, perform and dance. While she never took any formal training and was not hardcore about physical fitness, Mondey worked as an exotic dancer. It was during this period that she discovered the art form and skill needed to create beautiful routines using the pole and, in the process, lost 40 pounds and developed a passion for fitness. Mondey also realized that training could enhance not only her skills but other pole dancers as well. Unable to find any instruction, she established the world’s first pole dancing school. “I was teaching in my home studio and the clubs,” she explained. “Many of the women

coming to my classes were not exotic dancers. Thanks to the Internet, it was catching on that people could learn for fun and fitness. Everyday women were finding my website and instructional videos and coming to me.” A decade ago, Mondey made the move to Las Vegas, opening up a studio in a retail center. She then wanted to create an event involving pole dancing where people from around the world could participate in one location. “I had been to so many fitness trade shows and competitions, so I combined everything into one event, Pole Expo.” Attendees from over 50 countries travel to Las Vegas to attend workshops and seminars as well as shop at vendors’ booths plus watch performances at the Pole Classic Competition. Mondey is devoted to creating recognition for Pole Fitness as a sport. Arnold Schwarzenegger features pole fitness in his annual Arnold Sports Festival. She is also working with other pioneers to make pole fitness an Olympic sport. Mondey is active in the community helping to combat breast cancer along with other charitable initiatives and donation programs. Pole Fitness Studio was the recipient of the Community Pillar of Strength Award as a 2015 Honorary Community Awareness Campaign Sponsor in recognition of her and her staff’s efforts.

“With pole dancing, you are challenged by lifting your own body weight on the pole, so it is very anaerobic.”

Classes, parties, private events and instructor certifications are all offered at Pole Fitness Studio, and Pole Expo is held annually every September. Children’s Vertical Gym classes (age 7 and older) are also offered. Mondey continues her dedication to her career, sport and passion while sharing with others. Pole Fitness Studio 4265 S. A New Year A NEW YOU Beli Andaluz: Bringing the beauty of the holiday season to everyone

T

he holidays and New Year are a time for joy, giving thanks and giving back. No one knows this better than Beli Andaluz. As the owner of the award-winning Pico Madama salon in Summerlin and an active member of the community, she has the chance to share the joy of the holidays with people from all walks of life. “The holidays are my favorite time of year,” said Andaluz. “I love getting glamorous and dressing up for the holidays, and sharing my enthusiasm and good fortune with others.” At Pico Madama, this means helping her exclusive list of clients shine during this special time of year. Her clients include highpowered professionals, philanthropists and even a few celebrities. No one is more qualified to help them look their best during the holidays than Andaluz. She recently attained the hair color industry’s most prestigious title: Master Color Expert. After an intensive course of study over 18 months at the Wella Institute in Los Angeles, she became one of only 176 professionals in the country to earn the Wella Master Color Expert designation. Now she’s implemented a training program to share her elite knowledge with the Pico Madama staff. So whether it’s a new color, a new style or a special look for a holiday party, Pico Madama is the place to go during this special season. Andaluz’s commitment to serving others is not limited to her high-end clientele. Pico Madama has a long history of providing free services and financial support to organizations like The Shade Tree Shelter and the Nevada Children’s Center. Andaluz also sits on the board of The Shade Tree, where she chairs the fundraising committee. In this capacity, she’s helped raised

hundreds of thousands of dollars for the organization and organized several events. But what excites Andaluz the most is helping children during the holidays. In addition to raising funds, she is a regular presence at The Shade Tree Shelter. Her constant smile and unbridled enthusiasm bring joy to everyone around her, and she lavishes special attention on young people at the shelter during the holiday season. “I come from a very humble background in Guatemala—the youngest of 10 children. We never had much, but we learned to get by. Now that I have a successful business here in Las Vegas, it brings me joy to be able to give back,” Andaluz said. Pico Madama has been a big success in Las Vegas, but it is just one of six successful businesses Andaluz has started in three different countries. Her entrepreneurial accomplishments were recognized this September with a BIBO (Beauty In/Beauty Out) Award. She was one of 11 Las Vegas women to be honored as role models because of their great works, community contributions and entrepreneurial success. Along with her accomplishments and awards, Andaluz still likes to indulge and splurge during the holiday season. She loves to share this with her clients at Pico Madama. The high-end, elegant salon is filled with flowers and decorations for the holidays. Anyone walking through the door can’t help but get in the spirit. Precision Orthotics AND PROSTHETICS

Devoted couple helping residents of Southern Nevada

N

obody ever really plans for a major medical issue. Yes, health insurance is carried, and there are doctor’s visits for prevention. But when someone needs a brace, an artificial limb or a mastectomy fitting, Precision Orthotics and Prosthetics is ready to help clients regain mobility and a sense of well-being. Sara and Jimmy Colson, owners of Precision Orthotics and Prosthetics, are “lifelong partners, both in business and in life,” Sara stated. Their story begins with a desire to help people, grow the business and live the American Dream. When Jimmy moved to Las Vegas in 1988, he knew he had found his home. He began working at a family-owned business, Nevada Limb & Brace. Becoming an American Board Certified Orthotist, Jimmy decided to open his own business in 2004 and worked hard to succeed as CEO and Certified Orthotist. To earn extra income to invest in his business, he became a nightclub promoter in the evening. Sara was a model who met Jimmy at an event in 2006, and the two just clicked. “He needed help with administration duties and he said he could train me,” she said. He taught her about all the duties in running the front office of a medical service provider.

When Sara’s aunt (and godmother) was diagnosed with breast cancer, she knew she wanted to do more, not only for her family member but as a career. “This really hit me hard. It can be devastating, and I wanted to do something.” After doing research, Sara would study with American Breast Care, complete 1,500 clinical hours and pass an exam to become an American Board Certified Mastectomy Fitter. American Breast Care also provides the fitted bras, breast forms and other products for mastectomy patients. She is trained on making custom breast forms that match the patient’s skin tone, freckles, moles and even veins. The forms are so lightweight, the patient doesn’t feel like she is wearing anything, and best of all, patients can swim with these breast forms. As an American Board Certified Orthotist, Jimmy is also certified in cranial remolding helmets, scoliosis bracing and all custom orthoses. Kevin Bidwell, the lead prosthetist and orthotist, is also an amputee, losing his leg in a motorcycle accident. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology from the University of ColoradoBoulder, trained in a prosthetic technician internship position at Shriners Hospital, Twin Cities and completed his practitioner degree in prosthetics from Century College, White

Bear Lake, Minnesota. Bidwell also trained in specialized socket technology under the tutelage of Kevin Caroll, one of the most renowned prosthetists in the world. Precision Orthotics and Prosthetics works closely with physicians to help clients with their needs. Orthotics includes bracing and compression. Prosthetics can help amputees from fingers to limbs. Other services include helping diabetic patients with specific feet and limb issues as well. Along with a desire to help their community, Sara and Jimmy are proud parents of a young daughter and Jimmy has a son from a previous marriage. Their goal for their company is to give the best personal patient experience to fit every need and desire. Precision Orthotics and Prosthetics 526 S. Red Rock FERTILITY CENTER

Family, Fertility and the Best Way Forward

P

erhaps nothing is more personal and important to women and their partners than the decision to start a family. When that goal becomes elusive, or if for one reason or another, pregnancy just doesn’t happen, it’s time to think about professional help. Dr. Eva Littman founded the Red Rock Fertility Center expressly to meet the medical and psychological needs of couples and individuals who reach this stage and desire to build a family. Because Dr. Littman and her staff understand so clearly what’s involved, her patients have the best possible chance of achieving a successful pregnancy and welcoming a healthy baby. Dr. Littman’s background complements her choice of profession. She’s the daughter of a Southern small-town physician and grew up seeing the importance of treating each patient with dignity and care. To her father, his patients were family, and Dr. Littman carries this tradition forward in her practice. She is a graduate of Duke University Medical School, did her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Duke and then completed an infertility fellowship at Stanford University. During her distinguished career, she’s contributed significantly in her field, adding many innovations and best practices to treatment and training.

Today, she is one of Las Vegas Valley’s most trusted, knowledgeable, experienced and honored fertility experts. As the founder and practice director, she has successfully guided the center to produce exceptionally high first-cycle pregnancy success rates. In fact, Dr. Littman welcomes the opportunity of challenging cases, where the patient has less than a 5 percent chance of pregnancy. Because she has personally undergone some of the procedures involved in fertility treatment, she provides an outstanding level of empathy and as well as a high level of compassion for all of her patients. With three children of her own, Dr. Littman understands the deep desire of her patients to conceive and is committed to helping them achieve their goals. Dr. Littman has created a fertility center that reflects her values and understands the physical and emotional stresses inherent in the treatment process. She has carefully structured the treatment and the business model to positively address all the factors that are crucial to achieving a successful pregnancy. The key idea is to always minimize and manage the level of stress to give each patient the best possible chance of success. Dr. Littman summarized her approach, “I’ve always related to the quote ‘The light on a candle is always brightest when it’s first lit.’ Here at RRFC, we strive to accomplish successful pregnancies the first time around, which keeps our patients’ hopes high and stress levels low. With this philosophy, we have been able to create over a 1000 pregnancies on the first attempt and to help our patients expand their families.” The design of the clinic facilities and careful staff training further reflect Dr. Littman’s priorities. The facilities feel like a home with private treatment rooms and comfortable accommodations for consultations. The process is structured so that care, concern and support remain constant throughout the process. Treatment is split into two separate departments, one for new patients and diagnostics and the second for patients going through treatment. Staff to patient ratio is kept low to ensure a quality patient experience and to encourage dialogue between patient and staff.

Due to the growth of Red Rock Fertility Center, it has expanded its staffing to include Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner Shannon McGrath.

Nurse Practitioner Shannon McGrath

McGrath has been working in the field of reproductive endocrinology for 14 years and brings experience and compassion to the practice. The clinic is also in the process of building a new facility to accommodate the increasing volume of patients while maintaining the boutique, private feel. By expanding the number of consultation rooms and ultrasound rooms, waiting is kept to a minimum. Staff training is consistent, with regular meetings and specialized training around specific fertility issues so that the staff can respond appropriately to patient questions and concerns. Reducing stress and understanding the key linkages between mind, body and spirit are important factors in successful fertility treatment. However, the process will always be emotional and sometimes involves disappointments. Red Rock Fertility Center helps patients through these challenges by managing expectations and educating its patients beforehand. First, Dr. Littman and her staff make certain that each patient understands their treatment plan. Explanations begin at the beginning and allow plenty of time for questions and answers. Patients know what to expect and what time frame is likely to be involved. While the average treatment time for in vitro fertilization, or IVF, is about three months, this varies widely with individuals. The patient begins with a personal interview followed by an individual medical consultation. The required tests include an initial ultrasound and blood test for relevant hormone levels and pre-genetic testing, all of which give Dr. Littman a frame of

“Here at RRFC, we strive to accomplish successful pregnancies the first time around, which keeps our patients’ hopes high and stress levels low.”

reference to customize multiple treatment plans for each patient and help them decide upon the best treatment option. A big part of fertility treatment is technology. Dr. Littman is proud to be a true innovator in the treatment options she can offer to women and their partners. She has pioneered the use of many important refinements to IVF technology, which has enabled her to help many women previously unable to conceive. A good example is UltraIVF, a treatment package that includes PGS (preimplantation genetic screening), which increases success rates dramatically and enables many more women to become pregnant and deliver healthy babies by testing the chromosomes of each embryo prior to implantation. Red Rock Fertility Center was the first clinic in Southern Nevada to have a certified IVF clean room, an innovation that produces air that is 166,000 times more pure and clean than outside air. This environment is critical for producing high pregnancy success rates.

RRFC also uses the latest Saturn Laser, which is invaluable for procedures on the embryos to minimize damage and reduce time outside of the incubators, also leading to increased success. Red Rock Fertility Center offers a full range of services to support conception and successful family formation, including intrauterine insemination, gestational carriers, egg donation and egg, embryo and sperm cryopreservation. The center provides access to many resources to support mental and physical health during the treatment process, such as massage therapy, acupuncture options and a personal and holistic care approach. One of the things that families worry about is the financial part of treatment. Dr. Littman and her staff are firmly committed to full disclosure. Each patient and their partner are fully aware of costs ahead of time, which are outlined clearly and inclusive, with no hidden costs. Her staff spends time and due diligence to explore all possible insurance coverage and make sure

that patients have accessible and reasonable payment options. Dr. Littman is also cognizant of the needs of the partner. In fact, including partners is a priority for her. “One of the things I love is that I have both male and female patients. We make sure to include partners in every step along the way. They are able to sit in for every aspect, from education and questions to procedures like ultrasounds and checkups,” she commented, “Here at RRFC, we help heterosexual parents, homosexual parents, single parents–pretty much all people who are interested in building a family. We are building families here at Red Rock Fertility, and that’s the goal dearest to my heart.”

It’s Never Too Late TO BUILD HEALTHY HABITS to get through the holidays and into the New Year BY ANTOINETTE MODROK

T

he holidays are here, and that means parties and get-togethers, which generally means eating and drinking all of those yummy holiday treats and drinks. But instead of having to make that New Year’s resolution to lose weight and get in shape, why not start now? Building healthy habits does not have to be an all or nothing since it is a continual process and not an event. Embrace it, commit to making small incremental improvements, find inspiration and don’t be afraid to exercise, no matter how long it takes. Here are some tips to help, and if there are indulgences, just get right back on track. Enjoy a happy, healthy holiday season and make a New Year’s resolution to stay with it.

Serve steamed green beans instead of a green bean casserole. Although it is perfectly fine to raise a glass for a holiday toast, it is important not to consume excessive calories through beverages. Drinks such as eggnog, hot chocolate and apple cider have empty calories and high sugar content. Also, remember that water is always the best option to keep hydrated and energized. Keep up a normal exercise routine such as talking a walk with family or friends to catch up. Another way is to complete shorter and higher intensity workouts such as 30-second sprint intervals outdoors or on the treadmill for 15 minutes, or complete three sets of squats, push-ups and sit-ups at home.

If attending a holiday party at night with notso-healthy foods to be served, eat healthy and low-calorie foods during the day to balance out caloric intake while still getting daily nutrients. Make substitutions such as using skim milk and mashing cauliflower instead of mashed potatoes.

Call Symmetry In Motion Pilates & Wellness to join the 8-week Stay in Shape Through the Holidays program, which includes 16 Pilates classes, four health coaching sessions and email support. Call 702.749.7117 or visit simpilates.com.

Real Water

THE REAL DEAL ON HYDRATING

E

veryone needs water to survive. However, all water is not created equal, and Real Water is the only drinking water on the market that can maintain a stable negative ionization that is alkaline instead of acidic. With the arid climate of Southern Nevada, hydration is very important, and drinking Real Water allows the body to restore balance for a healthy lifestyle. After all, the body is comprised of over 70 percent water. But it is more than that. How about juice, tea, coffee or soda? Nearly every beverage has water as its foundation. Since water is such an integral part of everyone’s life, it makes sense to incorporate the best water possible. Most water and water-based products have common problems. First, the water has traveled through pipes, filtration devices and various systems that strip the electrons, leaving water that is positive ionized. When water molecules are missing an electron (positive ionized), the molecules, which are two (2) hydrogen and one (1) oxygen, seek to replace the missing electron. They borrow an electron from each other, causing the water molecules to clump. Cells have difficulty absorbing such a large clumped molecule. It is possible to drink a lot of water and not properly hydrate. Most water is also very acidic. Many nutritionists believe that an acidic body environment is unhealthy. In contrast, Real Water is manufactured at an alkaline pH of 8.0. Other ionized waters produced with expensive machines will lose their negative ionization benefits within just two days. In contrast, Real Water maintains its negative ORP for six to nine months when bottled. The Real Water brand is owned by Affinity Lifestyles.com Inc., a Nevada corporation based in Las Vegas. Brent Jones, president, and his wife, Aimee Jones, vice president of operations, have a diverse background that has contributed to the success of the company. Originally from California, they chose to open Real Water in Las Vegas due to its pro-business environment.

Brent Jones is an attorney who worked with startup companies, and when the dot-com crash occurred, he took over a company that sold nutritional products. “I was looking for a product that was good for people. I became reacquainted with the inventor who makes water with stable negative ions. I bought the exclusive rights to the proprietary process and have grown it,” he explained. Along with being the president of the company, Brent Jones is a state assemblyman for the Southern Highlands area, District 35. With a recent tax increase, he wants to help make Nevada a more probusiness state to offer more opportunities and have the state flourish economically. He is also a licensed promoter with the Nevada Athletic Commission for Real MMA (mixed martial arts) featuring amateurs realmixmartialarts.com. He and his wife decided to start this business since so many of the UFC athletes were drinking Real Water and this was a fun way to promote the water.

“Nearly every beverage has water as its foundation. Since water is such an integral part of everyone’s life, it makes sense to incorporate the best water possible.”

As part of the community, Real Water donates product to numerous events and organizations including Make-A-Wish, New Vista, Candlelighters, Jus Run, Hope4Lives, BBSC Endurance Running, Arthritis Foundation and Hope for Prisoners, to name just a few. Real Water is sold in ready-to-drink format with the main bottling facility located in Las Vegas. Packaged in recycled PET, BPA-free 500 mL, 1 liter and 1.5 liter plastic bottles and in a 750 mL glass bottle, the company is currently also developing a 1 gallon plastic bottle. In addition to the ready-to-drink format, Real Water is offered in a 5-gallon home delivery. Specialty packaging is also available with customized labels and coloring such as pink for the Susan G. Komen event. The water is sold in retail outlets such as Whole Foods. For more information, visit drinkrealwater.com.

Trendsetter Eyewear CHANGE THE WAY YOU VIEW THE WORLD BY DR. CYNTHIA PAYNE

F

ortunately, there are many options for correcting vision. There are eyeglasses, contact lenses and surgical options such as LASIK, PRK and implantable lenses. Most people needing correction are a candidate for one, if not all, of these choices for more clear vision. Zenka modular eyewear is designed to change the color, design or shape of the front of the frame. After selecting a frame in black, brown or a color, the prescription lenses are made for the frame. Then the fun begins as clips can be added in different colors, shapes or patterns that fit onto the front of the frame to change the look for the moment. These frames and clips are made of very high quality materials and manufactured by skilled craftsmen in France. They are extremely light and comfortable to wear even with the clip added. The eyewear design is only limited by the imagination. Transitions lenses for an eyeglass frame give both a clear lens inside and a tinted lens outside. These lenses provide great protection for the eyes from sun damage. They are offered in a brown tint, gray tint or green tint, and they are also available polarized with the Transitions Vantage lens. The Transitions XTRActive lens stays slightly tinted indoors and becomes much darker outdoors than the other Transitions lenses for those who prefer dark sunglasses. Contact lens materials have become more safe and comfortable to wear. The newer materials are better for dryness, stay cleaner and allow more oxygen to permeate the lens for the cornea. Soft contact lenses are available in daily disposable, bi-weekly disposable or monthly disposable wearing schedules. They

are available in a wide range of prescriptions to correct vision for near-sightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia (for those people over the age of 40 who need help to see up close). Trendsetter Eyewear is excited to offer the option of color contact lenses and they are finally available in a newer material. The Air Optix Colors lens is much more comfortable for most people to wear than the older Freshlook lens and is available in the Colorblend colors to change the appearance of eye color for the day.

Trendsetter Eyewear is excited to offer the option of color contact lenses... LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) and PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) are both FDA-approved laser surgery options to correct vision. LASIK is one of the most popular forms of vision corrective surgery performed in the United States. For the newest LASIK surgeries, there are two lasers used to correct vision. The femtosecond laser is used first to create a “flap or small piece of tissue that can be folded back from the corneal bed and expose deeper layers of the cornea for treatment by the excimer laser to correct vision. PRK is an excimer laser treatment that does not have a

flap created and is a safer option for patients with thinner corneas or patients who may be at higher risk of taking a blow to the eye such as UFC fighters. These surgeries create a permanent change to the curvature of the cornea but do not stop normal age-related vision changes from occurring or prevent eye disease. Their purpose is to allow a person to be much more visually functional without eyeglasses or contact lenses, but they may not totally eliminate the need for them. Trendsetter also does comprehensive eye exams, and we can discuss options for your vision prescription and needs. We can also evaluate your eyes to assess candidacy for laser vision correction and determine options for your eyes. LASIK consults are free, and appointments are required. Call Trendsetter Eyewear to schedule your appointment at 702.479.5222 or visit trendsettereyewear.com.

What Does the Ashley Madison Scandal Teach Us? HOW COMMON ARE AFFAIRS AND WHY DO THEY HAPPEN? BY DR. TIGER DEVORE

I

nfidelity is such a hot topic now due in part to the Ashley Madison scandal. Sex is one of our most basic drives. It is your commitment to what monogamy means between two people that interrupts the otherwise natural drive to pursue many sex partners throughout your life.

My Dog DOESN’T BITE BY RIKKI CHEESE, NEWS ANCHOR FOR KTNV, CHANNEL 13

M

y dog doesn’t bite.” I am amazed when someone approaches me with a dog either the same size as mine or smaller and utters those words. I am stunned when adults allow small children to approach a huge Akita. Then there are people who lean over and put their faces right up to my dogs’ muzzles, pat them on their heads and become disappointed when my Akitas don’t respond and lick them with joyful, Labrador love. A recent incident illustrates the care that people need to take when encountering any dog that is not their own. My veterinarian has a huge lobby. At Akira’s most recent visit, I was elated to see that one side was almost empty. There were three women, and two had tiny dogs sitting in their laps. I sat three chairs away from the woman who didn’t have a dog, and felt relief when my Akira immediately laid down and rested her head on the floor. I got on my phone. The next thing I knew, without saying a word, the woman who didn’t have a dog got up and started leaning over Akira.

weighed more than she did. I was concerned for her safety. Big dog owners have a big responsibility. Little dog owners also have a big responsibility. All dog owners need to watch out for the safety of their pets as well as any person or other animal they encounter.

“Do not run. That almost guarantees the dog will chase and attempt to bite you.” I am a huge advocate for training. My Akitas are usually in some kind of class, and it keeps them socialized. As an owner, I learn how to teach my dogs to behave under different circumstances. I also learn the body language that could be a sign of trouble that could lead either a dog or a person to get bitten. When Akira is tired, she stiffens up, and Apollo becomes overstimulated when tired. When I see this, I get them away from people and other dogs.

“Excuse me?” I wasn’t asking a question. It was more of an irritated snap.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 4.5 million dog bites happen every year in the United States. Children are most likely to be the victims. Frequently, careless or oblivious owners are to blame.

She replied, “Oh. I’m sorry. I guess I should have asked.” The woman was tiny. Akira

leash dogs can create tremendous problems for owners who keep their dogs leashed. A strange dog approaching, often at a high rate of speed, may be perceived as a threat by your dog. Always ask the owner for permission before approaching a dog. Ask if it’s OK to pet the dog. Akira doesn’t really like being touched. Apollo thinks it’s the greatest thing. Here are tips if you are approached by a strange dog without the owner. First, don’t make eye contact or yell and scream. Speak in a deep voice and order the dog to stay away. Do not run. That almost guarantees the dog will chase and attempt to bite you. If the dog does attack, don’t panic. Curl up on the ground, stay still and wait for the dog to walk away. Any dog is capable of biting if they are hurt, tired, frightened or feel threatened. The words, “my dog doesn’t bite” can be answered with two words. “Not yet.” Rikki Cheese co-hosts Valley View Live weekdays from 2 to 3 p.m., Action News Live from 3 to 4 p.m. and anchors live updates on Action News at 5, 6 and 6:30 p.m. Contact her at rcheese@ktnv.com and follow on Twitter and Instagram.

Let’s get a few of the common statistics out of the way: In the United States, it is estimated that 30 to 60 percent of all married individuals will engage in infidelity at some point during the marriage. Since most people will have several sex partners before marriage, it is assumed that this explains the increased likelihood for those individuals to have affairs after marriage. Just as the online world has made shopping for practically any item as easy as a keystroke, the online world makes infidelity as easy as online shopping. And it isn’t just men; as women develop greater financial independence, they are more likely to have affairs. The Ashley Madison scandal demonstrates the pervasiveness of the pursuit of private “no strings attached” liaisons. Affairs and betrayal of trust happen often. However, the emotional devastation for BOTH married partners and the repair of the relationship after the affair ends are being explored through research and knowledge. New theories explain some fascinating underlying causes of infidelity. The death of a parent can shock someone into feeling their mortality. That adult child wants to feel alive and believes the passion of an affair will give them what they are looking for. The loss of a job, the failure of an important financial investment, the realization that the success you’d always assumed you would achieve will not come to pass–any of these may be the motive behind infidelity. If a husband’s job success or career reputation is surpassed by his wife in ways that were never expected, the man’s insecurity may drive him to seek validation from another “adoring” woman.

Tragically, the diagnosis of a terminal disease can be a cause for infidelity. Facing the responsibility of a first child can trigger this response. Most of these examples are rarely communicated in the first shock of the discovery of the affair. Separation and divorce may occur before either partner can discover any of these underlying causes of the infidelity. Yes, the simplest reaction to the trauma of the discovery of infidelity is to rush to divorce. Although this response may satisfy the initial anger and wish to punish the unfaithful partner, this may not be the best choice for the long term, particularly when children are involved. It takes a moment of consideration to admit that the affair is probably a symptom of a larger problem in the relationship.

than just heaping on with the old habit of changing partners in the hope of getting a better one next time. Dr. Tiger Devore, known as Dr. Tiger, is a clinical psychologist, AASECT Certified Sex Therapist and media expert on sex and relationships. But most important, he is a person who cares with over 25 years of practice and expertise working with women and their specific issues.

“...30 to 60 percent of all married individuals will engage in infidelity at some point during the marriage.” If the problems that led to the affair are not examined within the couple, this pattern will most probably be repeated in the next relationship. Learning skills for lasting intimacy, deeper trust and more effective communication within the couple happens only with the work necessary to learn those skills. Admission of weakness, fear, insecurity and trauma that may lead to affairs often seems harder to face than the fury of the betrayed partner. The next time a friend tells you that they suspect their partner is cheating, maybe “dump the dog” isn’t what you should advise. Infidelity is proving to be a much more complex phenomenon, and worthy of understanding with the intent to save the relationship, rather

Home for the Holidays

WALKER FURNITURE HELPS FAMILIES IN NEED Partners include Helping Hands of Vegas Valley, Star Nursery and Las Vegas Rescue Mission BY DEBBIE HALL

S

ince 1994, Walker Furniture has helped make the holidays brighter for families in need with its Home for the Holidays program. A family owned and operated retailer, Walker Furniture has been in business since 1960 and owned by the Alterwitz family since 1973. With the need so great, Walker Furniture, along with partners Helping Hands of Vegas Valley, Star Nursery and Las Vegas Rescue Mission, will make the holidays and upcoming New Year brighter for 30 families. 10/26/14 8:14 PM

The program will donate furnishings for a living room, dining room, master suite and bedroom sets with bedding for each of the children in the home. “It is an amazing program that I have worked on for the past 15 years,” said Patti Gerace, marketing director of Walker Furniture. “It is the most rewarding thing we do here at Walker Furniture. Even during the recession, we continued to deliver furniture to the families that needed it.” All of the staff, including buyers, delivery people and management, work hard to make the program special and, according to Gerace, will continue as long as Walker Furniture is in business. Recipients have included single-parent households having difficulty making ends meet, many of them with children suffering from physical or mental disorders; families that lost their homes and belongings to fires; and families that have been affected by illness or domestic violence. All letters are reviewed by an outside, independent panel including representatives from Helping Hands of Vegas Valley (hhovv.org).

(starnursery.com) will be donating Christmas trees to the families. This is also the first year Star Nursery has been part of Home for the Holidays. “It is a great program that has been around for a long time,” said Paul Noe, staff horticulturist with Star Nursery. “We were looking for some way to get involved with donating Christmas trees, and this was a great fit.” A premium 5- to 6-foot tree will be delivered throughout the holiday season to the selected families. Donations of gift cards are being collected at all Star Nursery stores as well to also donate to the families. It will be the fourth year the Las Vegas Rescue Mission (vegasrescue.org) has partnered with Home for the Holidays. “I found out about the Home for the Holidays program and thought, wouldn’t it be great to provide gifts for the children during the holidays?” explained Shannon Mengel, assistant director of development. She reached out to Gerace of Walker Furniture, and now the Mission provides toys, bikes and food to the families. “We are so thrilled that Star Nursery is donating trees. All of this showcases how nonprofits and for-profits can work together to help the less fortunate in the community.”

Letters to nominate a family for the Home for the Holidays program will be accepted through Dec. 7. The letter can be mailed, dropped off in person, emailed or submitted online. Visit walkerfurniturehomefortheholidays.com for more information.

“It is such an honor to be part of this program. This changes lives and gives hope for the future. It is an amazing feeling. We are so thankful to the community for being a part of this program,” said Gerace.

In fact, this is first year Helping Hands has been involved with the program. “We have been of service to the community for 15 years helping seniors, and for us it is an honor to be part of this program and extend more into the community,” said Dana Serrata, executive director of Helping Hands of Vegas Valley. That singular vision culminated into her own spa, offering body wraps, facials, waxing, brow maintenance and her own customized line of skin care products. In one respect, it is the manifestation of her goals, but in many ways it is also just the beginning. As a wife, mother and hard-working professional, L Marie knows her clientele well. “I am an aesthetician who caters to the everyday woman, who understands the importance of upkeep and maintenance. What sets me apart from everyone else is that I strive to make first-class skin care affordable to all.” As part of her detailed visualization and meticulous design, L Marie has created a space transformed by unmatched tranquility. While a simple wooden door separates the hallway from the plush relaxation room, it

Marie (Lenette Marie Gazzana) has always lived a life of passion in her many roles as wife, mother and entrepreneur. She is now following her dreams with her business, L Marie’s Bare Elegance, as an extension of her vision to encompass soothing internal experiences that extend outward. Her motto, “Being healthy is beautiful from the inside out” reflects a deep-rooted philosophy that is actually inscribed on the walls of her spa, serving as very positive reinforcement to all clients as well as her staff.

seems as if one has stepped from one world into another. Moreover, that transformation merely describes the room clients enjoy while waiting to receive treatment. A big part of her business is the body wrap treatments she offers. Years ago, a neighbor introduced L Marie to FDA-approved body wrap treatments, during which she personally shed pounds and inches that had proven difficult to lose following the birth of her twins. L Marie procured her first machine and, after increased demand by satisfied clients, purchased additional equipment. The procedure burns 1,400 calories per session and speeds up individual metabolic rate, which increases the discarded calories when the body is at rest. She continually educates her clients about the process and its undeniable efficacy. However, L Marie also emphasizes that clients should incorporate a healthy diet and exercise plan as well to ensure overall health.

As a first-time entrepreneur, L Marie also realized that well-known skin care lines were simply too generic and not affordable to some of her clientele. These products included those not only used during treatment, but also those sold at retail outlets. L Marie identified a real need to formulate her own line, eventually creating an affordable portfolio of products customized to each individual client, also known as designer skin care. As part of a concerted effort to be green, L Marie revamped the bottles of her skin care line, going as far as switching labels from printed-paper to silkscreen design. Microdermabrasion, which assists in shrinking pore size, is another key treatment. Skin is the largest organ of the body and is designed to fight the elements. As people get older, their pores get bigger; microdermabrasion shrinks pores, reducing the appearance of fine lines in the process. L Marie is both a continuing student as well as a licensed instructor, who recently signed on with the Nevada State Board to teach licensed professionals about skin care in her own facility. She attends numerous classes and seminars to

L Marie’s

maintain her cutting-edge approach and knowledge regarding skin care.

She humbly admits that her success is due to a wonderful support system including her husband (the general manager of her business), twin sons and family members, including a great aunt and uncle, who relocated from Florida to Las Vegas. She also acknowledges her staff including her personal assistant Michele Blanchard, and receptionist, Harlee Miscovich. L Marie also gives kudos to her mother and father. Her parents were not only a positive influence as mentors, but also her lifelong inspiration. “My parents’ work ethic is amazing, and I witnessed sincere dedication to their chosen professions,” she said. The oldest of three girls, L Marie was born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Laurel, Maryland. At age 17, she moved to Heidelberg, Germany along with her father and sisters, who all viewed the move as an opportunity to experience the world. Her parents were divorced, and her father was active duty in the Army. L Marie’s mother, a high-profile assistant to the commissioner of the United States Social Security Administration, remained in the United States. “My mother, Phyllis A. Covington, is simply a phenomenal woman. I am so proud of her and my maternal grandmother, Roslyn Mims, who is also an amazing lady.” L Marie would graduate high school in Germany, but returned to continue her college education in Washington, D.C., visiting her father overseas annually. During one of these trips in 1989, she would meet her future husband, Michael Gazzana in Heidelberg, known the world over as Germany’s most romantic city. While skiing in Austria, she suffered a horrific broken leg that kept her hospitalized in Salzburg for six weeks.

L Marie decided to put college on hold to remain overseas, taking a job as a contractor for the Department of Defense that provided extensive training as a dental hygienist for military and civilian personnel. “While living in Germany, we traveled often and really enjoyed waking up in a foreign country. That experience taught me what it means to be a functional member in a completely different society,” she explained. With her father’s passing in 2013, L Marie keeps the memories at the forefront and his spirit lives on. L Marie and Gazzana would live in Germany for 12 years, but he would resign his position as a European sales director in order to move back to the United States. Together, they decided to

relocate to Las Vegas for the many business opportunities. They were blessed with twin boys three years later, and L Marie left her career in the dental industry to become a stay-athome mother. “My husband, Michael Gazzana, who earned his M.B.A. in 1988, exposed me to the business world over the years. More importantly, he consistently supported me with love and continues to always be there for me and our family.” After nine years, L Marie realized that she always had the dream to go into skin care and decided to get her training as an aesthetician in order to pursue that passion. Ironically, L Marie discovered that many dental hygienists switch careers to become aestheticians. Her husband was again supportive, and L Marie eventually graduated at the top of her class. While working for others to get experience, L Marie always kept her plan in mind to open her own business. “I wrote up a business plan while I was still in school,” she stated. “I learned about crafting plans in school and took it very seriously. I also realized that when first starting out, there would be little or no profit. My husband truly understood my vision.” Emotionally, L Marie stated that her business is all-encompassing because “this is my baby, and I nurture it.” L Marie supports other entrepreneurs and encourages everyone to patronize the many local small businesses in Southern Nevada. L Marie received mentoring from Jacobi’s Couture and Jizel’s Boutique and is also appreciative to the many people who have helped her along the way. She has been honored with numerous awards including Mrs. Clark County America 2014 and four Excellent Customer Service awards from

the Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce. L Marie has also twice been nominated for the Gold Excellent Customer Service Person of the Year and will be attending the awards ceremony later this year. A resident of Las Vegas for 18 years, L Marie is a big part of the community with her professional achievements and involvement including Make-A-Wish, Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, Project 150, at-risk elementary schools and many others. L Marie donates to many charities as part of her commitment to Southern Nevada. She instills her philosophy with her twin boys to give back to society, primarily by donating their time and efforts to those less fortunate. Her sons, Michael and Joseph, are a joy in her life. They are also a part of her business in a unique way. “The boys will call me and say, ‘Mommy, can you get me on your books? I need a facial.’ This is so funny. They will actually call me on the phone.” L Marie and her husband are very proud parents with their sons’ many accomplishments. With her husband originally from Wisconsin, the men in her life are big into football, following the Packers (and anything else Wisconsin). As for her continuing success, L Marie credits her scientific background in dentistry, time management, attention to detail and recordkeeping, maintaining excellent customer relationships as well as fostering her business connections. Most importantly, “I am having fun, I love what I do, and I can’t imagine doing anything else with my life.” She is also very grateful to her clients. “If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be here. They brought me here, and I am just thankful. I will always strive to be the best that I can be.”

Do not use facial wipes as a daily cleansing solution, as this can cause dryness.

If you have problems with acne, change your pillowcase twice a week. Products from your hair and secretions from your skin soil your pillowcase. Sunscreen in your makeup is not enough protection.

It is better to purchase your sunscreen separately, not combined with your moisturizer, since you do not need SPF at bedtime. When cleansing your face, don’t forget to cleanse your eyebrows.

SPF 30 is sufficient. Anything higher has no additional benefit.

It is best to moisturize your body just coming out of the shower or bath.

Ladies, don’t forget to pamper that special man in your life with a facial!

Chanukkah

SHINE A LIGHT BY STEPHANIE HELMS

BREAKING NEWS FIRST FROM CHOPPER 13!

I

t is probably uncommon for the Rolling Stones to remind someone of a Jewish holiday. I don’t know if it is the hopeful lyrics to “Shine A Light,” the theme of redemption or that it’s a track from the album “Exile on Main Street.” However, Jews know a little something about exile, and to me it sounds like a perfect theme song for the celebration of Chanukkah, the annual Festival of Light. In the Jewish calendar, Chanukkah’s eight-day observance takes place during the month of Kislev, usually in December. Because Kislev is always close to the winter solstice, Chanukkah takes us into, through and out of the literally darkest days of the year—what a reason to celebrate! Perhaps the most widely celebrated of all Jewish holidays, Chanukkah commemorates two very important happenings: the victory of

the Maccabees over the Syrian-Greek forces who tried to wipe out Judaism in the second century and the miracle during which one day’s worth of oil lasted for eight days in the sanctuary lamp called a ner tamid (eternal flame) during the rededication of the Holy Temple. In a larger sense, the holiday marks a reaffirmation of spiritual freedom and recommitment to our Jewish community. The word Chanukkah itself means “dedication.” Although the menorah is a popular symbol of the holiday, menorah is really a word for a seven-branched candelabra, and the ninebranched one used to kindle the lights during Chanukkah is actually called a chanukkiah. The nine branches represent one candle for each night plus the shammash, the center candle used to light the others. Blessings are recited over the lighting of the candles, which is done from left to right. Some families have a chanukkiah for each family member, others take turns lighting the candles and in some households everyone holds the shammash and lights each candle together. No Jewish holiday is complete without food, and during Chanukkah, oil-based treats like latkes, potato pancakes eaten with applesauce or sour cream and jelly donuts called sufganiyot are enjoyed. Other customs include playing a game of dreidel, a four-sided spinning top printed with the letters nun, gimel, hay and shin, which are initials for the phrase Nes Gadol Hayah Sham, meaning “a great miracle happened there.” Players take turns spinning to win gelt, gold and silver

wrapped chocolate coins. Songs are sung about heroes, love and kindness, and small gifts are given to family and friends. It is also a traditional time for tzedakah, giving to charity, which is a key component of Judaism. On Dec. 6 from 5 to 6:30 p.m., the Jewish Family Service Agency will sponsor its sixth annual Light of Life community menorah lighting in the Magical Forest at Opportunity Village on the first night of Chanukkah. A special musical performance by the Temple Sinai Choir will follow at 7 p.m. “Hanukkah is the festival of lights during the darkest time of the year. We celebrate by lighting candles and singing songs that retell the story of Judah and the Maccabees, reminding us that miracles are all around us even in the darkest of times,” explained Cantorial Soloist and Choir Director Heather Klein. Both classic and contemporary tunes will be presented during the concert. “May the good Lord shine a light on you, make every song you sing your favorite tune.” May the glow of the Chanukkah candles shine a light on everyone this holiday season, reminding all of us of the persistent miracle of light through the ages and the warmth of family and friendship that surrounds us.

nspiration and a love of family describe these incredible women that are part of the community of Southern Nevada. One Fearless Female entered the field of medicine because of the love and care she witnessed her parents giving her grandparents when they became ill. Striving for an education in the field of law, even though it took over a decade, our next Fearless Female set out to achieve her goals and be a role model for her daughters. A love of horses and a desire to help others is what motivated this Fearless Female after years of caring and working with her grandparents and aunt while giving back to the community. Families are a big part of our community, and these three women demonstrate honoring those connections and making Las Vegas a great place to live.

Amy Meyer

Bringing horses and children together for healing

Originally from rural Southern Illinois, Meyer grew up in a single parent home with three other siblings. Her mother had to work several jobs to provide for her family, which left little time for her mother to stay at home with her children. Still, Meyer had the support of her extended family, and her grandparents, Paul and Helen, would provide for her college education. She would graduate with a degree in broadcast communications radio/TV/film. After graduation, she wanted to honor the love and dedication her grandparents had shown her, so she moved to Las Vegas to get to really know them. “I only planned on staying a few years and then pursuing my passion for filmmaking in California. God, however, had other plans,” she explained. “My aunt was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer, which started a new journey in my life. I cared for my aunt during her final days on earth.” Meyer, her Aunt Pauline and grandparents would create The Paul E. & Helen S. Meyer Foundation. She would also dedicate 12 years of her life to care for her grandparents, and after the sudden death of her grandfather, Meyer would become the president of the foundation. Her grandmother would be 97 years old at the time of her passing in 2005. The foundation focused on educationally-based grants and scholarships for Las Vegas students that might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend college. The foundation has assisted many in achieving their dreams, including those who continued their education by obtaining advanced degrees. According to Meyer, “I wanted to continue the philanthropic ancestry.

Dr. Le Hua

I was given the vision for WHY Ranch during a long season of prayer. God showed me His purpose for my life: to mentor socially challenged youth through basic horsemanship. Since our first program started in 2009, our partner stables and now our permanent ranch home have touched the lives of over 200 families in our community.” Meyer has a passion to give opportunities to youth who face the same challenges she did. Meyer understands everything that leads up to making choices because of low self-esteem and wanted to give socially challenged youth a chance to overcome today’s challenges through befriending, caring for and riding a horse. “The bond between mucking stalls and growing a relationship with a horse has no words for a description,” Meyer explained. “The memories remain forever.” She also “had the pleasure of mentoring several young ladies from ages 5 to 31. Even some of the moms who attend our program with their kids, I’ve touched them all by listening, praying with and for them as well as having fun times.” Two of her first female students, sisters Lauren and Lindsey Sokolowski, aspire to compete for the United States in equestrian sports Dressage, Hunter and Jumper in the Summer Olympic Games. When Meyer was 30 years, she singlehandedly raised her teenage niece. Her niece is now a successful adult with a young son. Today Meyer loves to train the horses and spend time with the animals on the ranch, create jewelry and is a big San Francisco Giants and 49ers fan. She is married and gives credit to her husband Teddy, for centering her as well as gives kudos to her mother, Denise Klein, Pam Johnson and Ernie Becker for her success. Her biggest advice would be to dig deep inside and be honest. Really listen, take a deep breath, trust, make a choice, take a step and follow through. Amy Meyer is truly a Fearless Female.

e Hua, M.D., is passionate about medicine focusing on research and therapies for those diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. She is the director of the Mellen Program for Multiple Sclerosis at the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health (ClevelandClinic.org/BrainHealth) and staff neurologist at Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health. Dr. Hua is involved in clinical trials assessing new therapies for the treatment of MS and her personal research interests include using advanced MRI techniques to study MS, and neurological disorders.

Dr. Le Hua

She also works in the Major Jose M. Fajardo MS Patient Services Program created by Gloria and Emilio Estefan. The successful program focuses on improving the quality of life for MS patients and their caregivers by providing a licensed social worker to assist in supporting and securing services such as community resources, transportation and medical appointment coordination. Her decision to go into medicine was influenced by her childhood experiences. Her grandparents would become ill, and because they did not speak English, her parents would accompany them to the doctor’s appointments. Dr. Hua was also brought along to help translate. “I saw the power of the doctors in helping to comfort the family members, letting them know what was going on and easing their tension. I wanted to be that person who did the same thing.” When it was time to choose her specialty, Dr. Hua remembered observing the changes in her grandparents and their mental acuity. With these experiences, she wanted to become a neurologist and work in neurosciences. “The brain is just a fantastic organ. If you are going to look at the whole body and ask what makes us unique as individuals, it is the brain: its working and functions,” she stated. She also developed a passion for immunology and rheumatology. As Dr.

Hua learned about MS, she discovered it combined neurology, immunology and rheumatology. It is also a specialty that treats people as a whole. It was also during this period that great advancements were made in the treatment of MS, and it incorporated her love of medicine and helping others.

ayme Martinez Richardson has worked hard to reach her goals and work in criminal justice. Today she is a law clerk at Patti, Sgro, Lewis and Roger. Richardson provides trial support to the attorneys appointed to the defendant, reviews evidence and discovery, prepares witness files for cross examination and does whatever needs to be done in preparing the defense strategy. She has even assisted in two death penalty cases.

Dr. Hua is also one of only two fellowshiptrained MS specialists in the state of Nevada. “I wanted to learn more about MS and cutting-edge treatments and procedures.” Her mentor was very well trained in research of MS and helped her advance her training as well. Born and raised in Arizona, Dr. Hua moved to Las Vegas specifically to work at the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health. She wanted a work environment where she could work with her patients rather than the pressure of starting a private practice. When she came out to Las Vegas to check on the clinic, Dr. Hua felt it matched her philosophy of putting the patients first and would be a great fit. “I want to look at the whole person, do comprehensive care and take care of them. This clinic offered everything I wanted to do and be in terms of being a doctor,” she explained. The weather was similar to where she was raised, and it was close to home and her extended family. Her big inspiration is her parents, who had to flee from Vietnam in 1970. She witnessed their bravery and strength to leave everything behind to look for better opportunities for a better life for them and their family. “With all of their challenges, they are my biggest mentors in just how I approach life, problems and difficulties. There are always different perspectives and ways to solve dilemmas.” Dr. Hua also credits other doctors for teaching her the art of medicine. With her devotion, dedication, education and passion in the practice, Dr. Hua believes a woman can have it all including career, family and self-growth. Married with children, she truly demonstrates being a Fearless Female.

Jayme

Martinez Richardson An inspiration in the field of law

Her path started in California, one of nine siblings. Due to substance abuse issues in the family, she left and, according to Richardson, “spent the next few years of my life learning some of my most valuable life lessons being raised on the streets. Thankfully, I fell in with an amazing group of friends in Empire (California), many of whom I still keep in touch with to this day.” Still, she valued education and obtained her GED. Richardson was encouraged to enroll in junior college by the friend “most likely to need my services today, Reed Perez. He died a year after we enrolled in college, not surprisingly from a gunshot wound, so I never got a chance to thank him. He would be proud,” she explained. Also a mother by age 18, it would take Richardson 10 years to obtain her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice including a move to Las Vegas in 2001. As for pursuing a career in law, “I decided to apply to law school, honestly never believing I would get in. But I remember thinking to myself before I applied that I had to show my daughters that you can do anything you put your mind to, no matter where you come from or what the statistics say about how successful you will be. I needed my girls to have someone in their lives they could be proud of. So I applied to one school, just to say I did it. In 2006 I was accepted to the William Boyd School of Law at the University of Nevada, Las

Vegas. I was one of only 144 students, out of over 2,000 applicants, to be accepted to the law school. Then I cried,” she recalled. She also credits her move to Las Vegas for inspiring her to continue her education. Richardson believes Las Vegas has an element of magic to it and that opportunity and success is available to anyone willing to work hard for it. Richardson is also grateful to a group of women who took her when she was 18 years old at the Haven Women’s Center in Modesto, California, who taught her about being a fearless female. “It was there that I learned that I was not weak or broken, that I was smart, and capable, and worthy.” While living in Modesto, Richardson worked with another amazing group of women at the Center for Human Services. She also took a second job teaching parenting and anger management classes at the California Youth Authority. As for living and working in Las Vegas, “since law school, I have had the opportunity to work with some of the best advocates in the Las Vegas legal community. Each one has graciously shared his or her wisdom with me, and trusted me to do my best on their behalf. Each one has encouraged me to take new opportunities to learn and grow,” she stated. Her biggest inspiration is her family. Her husband Joe, is an executive chef, and she has three daughters: Alyssa, Mahlea, and Sophia. “My family is what drives me. They accept me for the person I am while at the same time inspiring me to become a better person. My oldest daughter just started working at my office, and I am so happy to see her at work every day.” Continuing to set and attain goals and help others along the way is what makes Jayme Martinez Richardson a Fearless Female.

iane Casiello, Internet sales and loyalty manager at MercedesBenz of Henderson, is thrilled to help someone purchase or lease a luxury automobile. She is learning about her brand every day with its newest features and options so she can work with her clients and their needs. “Many times with the level of vehicle I sell, clients will tell me that this is their dream car. I think this is very cool that I have helped someone achieve getting their dream car. This is one of the biggest purchases anyone will make in their lifetime. It is a big decision and to be a part of it is a wonderful feeling for me,” Casiello stated. Originally from the New York and Connecticut area, Casiello moved to Las Vegas in 2007 with then-husband and family for employment opportunities. She had just given birth to her last child and joined her husband working with public speakers in RE and personal niche industries. As for changing careers and working in the automotive industry, Casiello explained, “I have been leasing cars my whole life. In fact, my first car was leased when I was 18 years old, so I had a lot of experience in that area. I have always loved going to car dealerships and just the entire experience. When I was looking to change careers, I had a friend in the business and contacted him. He invited me to come by and consider working with him at the dealership. It was an intriguing offer, so I checked it out.” Casiello has been working in the automotive industry since 2011. In fact, while working for her first dealership, she broke a 20-year store record and within that 6-month period became the most

(online) reviewed sales person. “There are many reasons why I love what I do. Every day is different. I get to meet people from different parts of the world. That is really exciting for me,” she said. Casiello has worked in the real estate industry and for a family-owned business in managing over 80 properties for 10 years. She understands working with owners, clients, customers, vendors and the public and has transferred her skills to her current position. After starting a family, Casiello was a stay-at-home mom before working with public speakers as an agent and setting up events. She would work with the media and vendors, handling negotiations as well as making certain her clients’ needs were met. According to Casiello, “My last career really rounded me out since I worked with personal niche speakers. I learned to better communicate with clients, ask the right questions so I know what they are expecting from me and understand what their needs are.” As for her current career, “I work in a predominantly male industry, which is challenging in and of itself. Many still have a perceived notion that women don’t know anything about cars. I highly disagree. However, I may have been more sensitive to this misconception when I began my career in luxury auto sales. Looking back, I can say that this is what really drove me to establish a firm understanding of the core product I represent. While I’m still fairly new with Mercedes-Benz, my peers will often tell me I’ve raised the bar. Fueled with tenacity and my love of fine autos, I’m living proof that anything boys can do, girls can do better!” Mercedes-Benz of Henderson is located at 925 Auto Show Drive in Henderson. riginally from Buffalo, New York, according to Morgan, he is a reformed for-profit executive. He was senior director of business development and marketing for one of New York’s largest commercial construction firms, founder and CEO of a regional web application development firm and product manager for a large publicly traded printing corporation.

Along with experience, he brings education, including an M.B.A. from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, and he studied Performance Measurement for Nonprofits at the Harvard Kennedy School and Social Entrepreneurship at the Stanford Graduate School of Business through executive programs. This year, Morgan participated in United Way Worldwide’s Advanced Leadership Program.

Morgan started eight years ago at United Way of Buffalo & Erie County. As CEO, he was a part of a turnaround of the organization. After enduring 10 years with declining revenue, United Way in Buffalo is now a highly successful organization, with six consecutive years of campaign growth.

As for his goals, “I can think of no better way of creating change than bringing Southern Nevadans together to join the movement, capture the momentum and move our community to new heights,” he said. “I have to tell you I’ve never felt more welcomed. I am struck by all of the passionate advocates that I have met who want to help our community succeed. This is a place where people are open to new ideas and want to work together to create greater outcomes. And I love that it hasn’t snowed once since I got here.”

As for changing his career field, Morgan explained that he changed his focus when he realized that he wanted to make a difference and help others through his career. “I have five kids, and when the oldest became aware enough to ask about what I did at work, it began to make me think about my career differently. I made a sales call on an amazing little organization called Child and Family Service of Niagara, and I was floored by their compassion and commitment to helping families. That was another experience that just made me ask myself, what am I really doing with my career, and what is my contribution?”

T

ogether let’s explore an inner vision of the perfect life. Since we all exist within the Field of All Possibilities, there are no limits to what we can create or imagine as the perfect life. For some, the perfect life will look like something other than what it is for them in the moment. For others, life could not be any more perfect than the way it already is right now.

Ruth Lauber

Perfect Life

ON MARKETING Helping your business grow

V

ice President of Sales and Marketing for Las Vegas Woman magazine, Ruth Lauber has been a part of the magazine since the beginning. With an extensive background, Lauber will be writing a column about marketing for businesses beginning with the next issue. Lauber continues her career of over 40 years in the broad spectrum of newspaper and magazine sales, marketing, events and new electronic media. She loves her work with Las Vegas Woman. “This magazine has been a huge success from day one,” Lauber said. “Our mission has always been to educate, entertain and inspire every woman to be the best they can be, and I am proud to be a part of that goal.” In the Doctors of the Desert fall issue, Lauber welcomes the opportunity to benefit the readers with “feature stories, articles and profiles about being and staying healthy. Since we all need medical professionals for health, I am glad our magazine features some of the best in Las Vegas.” Lauber’s goal is to advise clients and prospective advertisers on how to create marketing and advertising that will help their businesses grow. “Together we help their dreams of success become a reality,” she said. “We have every marketing tool available to help any business expand and thrive. When they are 100

successful, I am successful and our community continues to grow. I love helping people network and bringing all of us together.”

“The key is to really listen to the client and understand what they want to accomplish.” To explain what advertising is really all about, Lauber puts on a demonstration for potential clients. “I walk into a business and many will tell me that they don’t advertise. I will say to them that since they don’t advertise, I am taking all of their business cards and brochures and erasing their name off the door. When a business person protests, I tell them that they just told me they don’t advertise. I then ask what they think they are doing with literature and signage. When many answer it is promotion, I explain advertising is really promotion.” The key is to really listen to the client and understand what they want to accomplish. It is a partnership and it is the client’s dreams that matter and making them come true.

BY REV. THABITI

Arguably a perfect life is a life lived without fear, anger, worry, guilt, pain, illness, poverty or suffering. According to the teachings of the ancient science of the standard deck of 52 playing cards, the way to achieve the Perfect Life is through our own personal mastery of the Four Suits. To master the Four Suits ♥ ♣ ♦ ♠ means achieving the: Unconditional Love and Happiness of Hearts ♥ Know-how and Intelligence of Clubs ♣ Abundance and Prosperity of Diamonds ♦ Perfect Health and Divine Wisdom of Spades ♠ There is a perfect order governing life that does not seek or require our approval to operate the way it does. This perfect order is

why the sunrise is never late and why every planet is exactly where it’s supposed to be at the exact time it’s supposed to be there. This is also why Life itself, our greatest teacher, always puts us in the perfect situations and circumstances necessary for our individual growth into higher states of consciousness whether we like it or not. Since perfect order is evident everywhere throughout the Universe, then perhaps all we have to do is realize or see that everything is perfectly good and perfectly bad exactly the way it is. The ultimate, yet simple, way to achieve the perfect life is to remember, “When we learn to love what we get, then and only then, we will always get what we love.” This way our real destination is never a place but is instead a new way of seeing things. Happy Blessings Rev. Thabiti is internationally known as the world’s most accurate personal forecast expert. His Time-Map System, available at thepower.org, provides illuminated directional guidance that leads to a superior advantage over your situation or circumstance.

She started her career as a proofreader and typesetter. “I was living in a very small town in Illinois, and that was the only job available,” she explained. “I was helping put my (then) husband through college, so I needed the work.” She discovered she loved the industry and worked in every aspect of print including typesetting, graphics, developing and processing film. Lauber worked her way up to production manager. Her mentor pushed Lauber into sales, something she didn’t want to do at first. However, for the past 30 years, Lauber has excelled in her field and is grateful. By way of Illinois, Nebraska, Arizona and California, Lauber would first settle in Laughlin, Nevada, and start a publication, Laughlin Entertainer, which is still in print today. She would finally make it to Las Vegas, first working for the Las Vegas Business Press before meeting and working for Tammy Grabel. Lauber volunteers for the March of Dimes. Her granddaughter was born at a weight of 1 pound, 6 ounces and that organization really helped her. Today her granddaughter is 9 years old and very healthy. “I want to thank all readers, advertisers and vendors who support the magazine and its events, and I look forward to continuing a healthy and happy working relationship.” WINTER 2015-16 | W oman M aga zine .V egas

Walk us through a typical day in your shoes. There really is no typical day for me. I could be waking up at 3 a.m. to do media interviews, or I could sleep until noon. It just depends on the day. The most important part of every day for me is spending quality time with my wife, Kathleen, and 13-year-old daughter, Lauren.

Have you ever purchased any As Seen on TV items? Yes, I’m hooked on them. I’ve bought shaving kits, ladders and pretty much anything involving tools. I’m a bit of a Mr. Fix-It.

If you could destroy a grade-school photo of yourself, what year would it be and why?

4

While grocery shopping, what is your stick-in-the-cartwhen-no-one-is-looking item?

5

If we were to look through your device, what is on your hit list or playlist or favorite app?

6

Do you ever play “tourist” in Vegas? If so, what is your favorite thing to do?

It’s funny, because I never really look at pictures of myself, so I couldn’t tell you.

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and Snickers

I refuse to have a cellphone, so I really don’t know what those things are, but I do use my iPad to watch movies, TV shows and listen to music I’m thinking about recording or performing.

Yes, I love going to the Valley of Fire. It’s spectacular!

What do you do to unwind and relax? I relax by riding horses, helicopter flying, water skiing and visiting with my animal family at Casa de Shenandoah. W oman M aga zine .V egas | WINTER 2015-16

Does anyone ever mistake you for someone else? Yes, a Wayne Newton impersonator. Wayne Newton is a true icon of Las Vegas as a performer, singer, musician, entrepreneur and Las Vegas ambassador. He and his wife Kathleen have now officially opened the gates of Casa de Shenandoah as an attraction for the public. The 52-acre ranch, which Newton and his family called home for over 40 years, includes a museum, his plane (now grounded), Arabian horses and other exotic animals and the house that was once was their home. Casa de Shenandoah is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information and to purchase tickets, go to casadeshenandoah.com or call 702.547.4811.
