Gratitude for a greater purpose

As I sit here in Korea writing my publisher’s letter for this issue of Las Vegas Woman, I am struck with incredible gratitude. Here I am, almost half-way across the world and the magazine is about to be uploaded to the printer. By far, it’s our best annual Doctors of the Desert issue yet. Technology never ceases to impress me. It can keep me connected to the Las Vegas Woman team as if I had never left. We have met our deadline and are even going to the printer early. With that said, it is a true testament of our team’s passion for what Las Vegas Woman stands for: community first. Those Photo by Connie Palen Photoworks words are said over and over in our office, it’s our culture. I am humbled to see that Las Vegas Woman is a driving force in our community… not because of any one person, but because of everyone that has been involved in the publication to what it is today. A special thanks to Debbie Hall. She has been with the publication over the years. She started as a contributing writer, to coeditor and, as of this issue, she has taken the lead seat as Editor-In-Chief. Debbie, you did absolutely phenomenal this issue. It’s been a joy working with you the last ten years and I look forward to collaborating with you as Editor-In-Chief. Thank you to Jason Carter, the chief executive assistant to the publisher. You played a big role in the success of this Doctors of the Desert issue. You displayed huge professional growth by taking on more responsibility. There were a lot of moving pieces and parts in putting the fall issue together. Congratulations on being able to stay organized and also adjusting your sails as needed to get the job done beautifully. Thank you Troy and Brandi Doss. They have been with the publication since its inception and continue to impress me with graphic designs every issue. There’s something to be said about working those late nights until 5 a.m., it must get your creative juices flowing! For those that follow me personally on social media, you are familiar with my BFF, my mentor, and otherwise known as the Vice-President of Las Vegas Woman: Ruth Lauber. This woman is a rock. Working with her the past 10 years, I have learned so much. Today in Korea, I was getting worksick… it’s kinda like being homesick. I was missing my team immensely as I have always been with them during magazine crunch time. However, once again, Ruth put things in perspective for me. She sent me this text while I was working in my Korean hotel room: Don’t be emotional Tammy, other than the feelings of a great leader. Across the country and your team makes it happens. That is the sign of a great leader. Today had been an emotional day for me. Now I realize that Las Vegas Woman is thriving and has taken a life of its own. Through the magazine, we’ve featured over 900 women and it has truly become a magazine for our community. The past year, I have been saying this mantra every morning: “It is my hope that Las Vegas Woman Magazine is a huge moving force in our great city that educates, entertains and inspires.” The clouds have parted and I can truly see this dream coming true. To educate, entertain & inspire,

Letter from the Editor In many ways, fall is a beginning: school, football, cooler weather and the time change. In the cycle of life, fall is the time of harvest after planting in the spring and growth in the summer. That is the way I feel as I write this—I am harvesting what I planted. I have lived in Las Vegas over 35 years and have worked in the media industry for many years. I am honored to have been a part of Las Vegas Woman magazine for years and was thrilled when the opportunity to take on the role of editor-in-chief was presented to me. I hope to bring the same informative, educational, fun and thought-provoking content that will inspire you to read, discuss and share. I am so proud to be part of Las Vegas Woman magazine and will strive to continue to contribute to its message of inspiration, hope and accomplishment. I am amazed by all of our wonderful writers and what they have contributed for our readers; including the value of eating fruits and vegetables, the advances in women’s health, and creating a family, along with all of our wonderful doctors who are a big part of health care in Southern Nevada. Thank you again for this opportunity to share with you the world of Las Vegas and what it has to offer all of us. I look forward to the coming months and years of continuing to share with all of you.

ARTS Guide

Compiled By Kate Stowell and Jessica Kennedy

More great art is being presented in Las Vegas. Here is just a sampling of exhibits happening around town this fall.

18

lvwomanmagazine.com | FALL 2013

August From Aug. 1 through Sept. 30, Sporadica Designs (located inside Emergency Arts at 520 Fremont St.) will showcase its new exhibit “Painterly.” This exhibit presents works created with the painterly method, which is a very loose way of painting with no real expectation of the finished piece. You may start painting with your hands, then do some with a brush, use some pastels, pencils, etc. Sin City Gallery (located inside The Arts Factory at 107 E. Charleston Blvd., Suite 100) will feature works from San Francisco artist Nancy Peach. Peach’s mission is to bring the light and illuminate individuals who are living life with no restrictions and are truly expressions of this enormously vivid, engorged, saturated life. This show will run from Aug. 1 through Sept. 30. Showing through Aug. 30, the Amanda Harris Gallery of Contemporary Art (located inside Soho Lofts at 900 Las Vegas Blvd. S., Suite 150) will present a group show entitled “Exchange,” featuring artists from outside Las Vegas. The works by the artists will invite the viewer to compare the works with one another as well as compare the works with other art throughout our city.

September “As I See It: The Art of Peg Lozier” will premiere at the Clark County Library (located at 1401 E. Flamingo Road), showing through Sept. 3. “As I See It: The Art of Peg Lozier” will showcase watercolor, oils, acrylics and pencil on canvas, paper, metal or wood using bold color and a strong contrast of light and shadow. First Friday -- Native American Art and Indigenous Art, Sept. 6, 5 to 11 p.m., Downtown The Amanda Harris Gallery of Contemporary Art will present a solo show, “The Importance of Pretending,” by Biscuit Street Preacher, running from Sept. 19 through Nov. 1.”This body of work will remind us that we are not machine, but still very human. It is beautiful to be imperfect. It is beautiful to be soft or rough. It is beautiful to have emotion. It can be thrilling to use your own imagination,” Biscuit Street Preacher said of his work. The Southern Nevada Museum of Fine Art will showcase the “International Contemporary Masters Exhibition - Vol. 6/7,” from Sept. 21 to Nov. 23, featuring artwork by artists whose work(s) appears in the book, “International Contemporary Masters (ICM) Vol. 6/7.”

October Sin City Gallery will present the work of Krysztof Nemeth, a Kansas Citybased artist specializing in fetish, gothic, retro and low-brow “kulture” pin-up illustration. Working primarily in black and white, Nemeth creates drawings that are wildly voluptuous and rich in depth. His girlie art is as fun as it is sexy, depicting an inherent sense of humor and playfulness in its ribald sensuality. This show will run from Oct. 3-27.

First Friday – Knowledge (also First Friday’s 11th Anniversary); Oct. 4, 5 to 11 p.m., Downtown.

Chris O’Rourke: Engaging the senses with his art By Jessica Kennedy

When speaking of the work of Las Vegas metal sculptor Chris O’Rourke, the most descriptive word to use would be engaging. His art ranges from monolithic to massive, captivating the viewer with a tactile feel that carries over to the other senses as well. Using varying metals as his primary medium, O’Rourke constructs his work to reflect his spirituality, emotion, desire, subconscious thought, sensation and philosophy. The clean lines offer visual appeal while the different textures create a tangible effect to his art. The varying forms of the sculpture tell a story.

When asked about his work, O’Rourke said, “I am interested in the contrast of shape and line, texture and finish, in a combination that is aesthetically intriguing. Sculpting in metal is my way to convey an aesthetic that is otherwise difficult to express.” He has done a magnificent job of conveying all of his interests in each piece produced.

The task of taking raw, earthly elements and turning them into art is not a new concept but O’Rourke’s approach is nothing short of art Nuevo meets contemporary art in a fantastic juxtaposition of heavy metals that appear to be less than weighty.

So how does the artist hope that each person who encounters his art will view it? “While my pieces are nonrepresentational, without definition, everyone will see something different in my art and I want that subjective interpretation to be left to the viewer,” O’Rourke said. And nothing could be more engaging than the sculptural work of local Las Vegas artist, Chris O’Rourke. FALL 2013 | lvwomanmagazine.com

Together committed to creating a better future

G

ard and Dr. Florence Jameson met on the sandy, beautiful beaches of San Diego as teenagers, went off to different colleges and then married with a shared mission to help create a caring community where every person has access to quality medical care. So far, the couple has attained far more than they ever dreamed possible. Three years ago, Dr. Jameson opened the first Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada facility in Paradise Park, the largest free and charitable medical clinic in Southern Nevada. Last year, the clinic served over 6,000 patient visits, with nearly 800 volunteers serving patients with a culture of caring. “The realization of my dream would be to see every person, young and old, in Nevada have access to quality medical care,” said Dr. Jameson. As part of its commitment to ensuring that children and families in the valley are healthy and have access to comprehensive healthcare, United Way supports Dr. Jameson and the efforts of VIM. “United Way is at the heartbeat of our community,” stated Dr. Jameson, “As a

22

partner with United Way, we are able to serve so many more in our community who might not otherwise be cared for. Thank you, United Way!” Inspired by United Way’s outreach in the community, Dr. Jameson recently became a United Way Women’s Leadership Council member. “I feel a close camaraderie with members of the WLC, many of whom have been my patients for many years,” Dr. Jameson said. With a distinguished career in medicine, Dr. Jameson recently finished her service as president of the Nevada State Medical Association. Her days are filled with caring for her obstetrics and gynecology patients at her medical office, while during the afternoons and evenings she helps those who need medical services through VIM. A CPA and former partner and director of financial planning at accounting and business advisory firm Piercy Bowler Taylor & Kerns, Gard Jameson enjoyed serving a variety of clients. In 1998 he made the bold move to a new career teaching Asian Philosophy at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Since that

time, he has written two books on philosophy and religion. Gard Jameson also supports United Way’s work in the Healthy Communities Coalition, which fosters collaboration among diverse community-based organizations in order to improve the health and well-being of Las Vegas Valley residents. “Collective impact suggests that we cannot solve our problems in isolation,” said Gard Jameson. “We need all hands on deck; working together, talking together and dreaming together of a more vibrant community.” When she finds spare time, Dr. Jameson can be found digging into the soil in what she calls her “backyard horticulture adventure,” while Gard Jameson enjoys being with his wife, traveling, community involvement and paleontology. The Jamesons are committed to creating a better future for Southern Nevada through their support of United Way. “Whether it is by volunteering, or by becoming an advocate for a community concern or engaging in a philanthropic investment in our community, United Way presents the greatest opportunity for the greatest good,” Gard Jameson said.

Dinner in the Sky Dinner in the Sky Las Vegas is a one-of-a-kind dining experience that serves a meal 180 feet in the air. Regional specialties feature choices such as carne de res a la parrilla served with beef skirt steak, wild mushroom and oven roasted poblano peppers. Fall in Love with Autumn Wines Similar to watching different sporting events throughout the year or changing your wardrobe to accommodate the weather, wine enthusiasts drink seasonally. Seasonal wines generally focus on the visual appearance of the wine. In the warmer months, wine drinkers will flock to the rosés and crisp whites. When things start to cool off, the light-bodied white and rosé wines are put away and savory deep reds are enjoyed. Fall is a red wine-friendly time of year, but there are many full-bodied white wines that complement the cooler weather as well. woon-Worthy Shoes By Laura Coronado

Sport fall’s hottest looks on your feet

“Women can be whoever they want to be this fall when it comes to shoe fashion,” says style expert Wendy Albert, Senior Director of Marketing at Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood; and what fashion-loving woman doesn’t want to experiment with a variety of fashion personalities? After all, there’s no such thing as trend loyalty, and every fashionista suffers from a touch of style schizophrenia. No other season caters to such a desire for diversity like fall 2013; and no other category of fashion will satisfy and make you swoon like shoes. “If they [women] are feeling sexy, they can put on a pair of thigh-high boots in leather or even sumptuous materials such as fur or velvet,” Albert explains, further advising that, “Women should take advantage of all of the style options that will be available and look for details such as cut-outs in boots and booties–especially open toe booties.” Trends from last year continue to thrive during this one, such as red and wine hues and menswear inspired looks. But the difference between this year’s lust-inducing shoe silhouettes and last year’s is simply a style evolution. Take the classic pump for instance. This season’s pump toe has turned pointy and its sole is now single. You don’t need to entirely retire your platform shoes, but let them hibernate for a moment. Albert encourages shoe lovers to embrace the change. This evolution has actually made shoes feel more comfortable, with supportive stacked heels and pretty flat alternatives that your feet will adore. Boots range from equestrian looks to femme-fatale sexy to girlishly prissy, while 1940s Gatsby glamour has influenced the return of the T-strap. And what about color? Rich jewel tones continue to dominate the shoe scene with Pantone’s color of the year, emerald, making the most stunning statement.

Tattoo Vanish New Product and Procedure Can Make Those Unwanted Tattoos Vanish

R

emoving an unwanted tattoo can be a tedious and painful process. Some procedures can’t even promise complete removal of the tattoo and may leave discoloration and scarring. Now there is a new product and procedure that can remove all colors, is less painful and requires fewer treatments. TATTOO VANISH offers the first ALL NATURAL, NON-LASER removal product with the procedure taking less than an hour depending on the size of the tattoo. First, a machine is used to break the epidural (top) layer of skin. The TATTOO VANISH product is then applied to the ink. Clients must keep the area completely dry for at least 10 to 14 days or longer allowing a scab to form and fall off naturally. If a client interferes with the healing process and gets the area wet, it will cause the scab to come off prematurely and the removal process will stop according to Mary-Arnold Ronish, owner of TATTOO VANISH. The longer the scab stays on the more ink will be pulled from the skin. A common practice has been to tattoo over (cover-up) an unwanted tattoo. Arnold-Ronish recommends removing unwanted tattoos altogether. Tattoo Vanish 6879-A W. Charleston Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89117 702.256.7778 • tattoovanish.com

Moms Making

Six Figures

Y

ou may have seen our articles and our cars driving around town and asked yourself, “What is Moms Making Six Figures?” Natricia Tricano was in the same position when she contacted the company and she now realizes it was an opportunity of a lifetime. “Moms Making Six Figures gives me the time to raise my kids and still have a life aside from being a mommy,” shared Tricano. Tricano worked as a practicing attorney for 12 years, where she was an Army JAG trial counsel, a corporate defense attorney and had her own law firm doing family, criminal and civil plaintiff ’s work. “Being an attorney is fantastic, if you have the 10-12 hours a day to commit to it. For me, it was impossible to be an attorney and be a mom without feeling guilty that I was sacrificing the happiness of my children and also without feeling guilty that I was sacrificing my commitment to my clients,” explained Tricano. “The only way around this conundrum was to fully commit to one and I decided to take the toughest job in the world,: being a full-time mom.” For two years, Tricano embraced her new role as “mommy” and during this time she had another daughter. As her youngest approached her 2nd birthday, she realized there were aspects of working outside the home that she missed. “I really missed relationships with other people aside from children that were committed to a unifying goal,” Tricano said. That’s when she saw the article for Moms Making Six Figures. “When I met with Kellee Wip about the company, I became more intrigued and I realized it offered the balance that I’d been looking for,” she said. Moms Making Six Figures was founded almost five years ago in San Diego and Wip is part of the team that is expanding

Beth Fisher

Morning News Anchor for KTNV Channel 13 “Together Making Las Vegas a Better Place to Live”

I

am the most grateful working woman on the planet. I am sure of it. You often hear people say, “If you want something, just put it out there in the Universe.” In the Fisher house, we call that praying. And about a year ago, my husband and I started praying about whether I should return to work. I left behind a career in broadcast journalism when I had a 1-year-old girl and a baby boy on the way. That was five years ago. After a sweet time in our home, I longed to get back to work. But returning to a life in the newsroom meant I needed a very specific job with a very specific schedule. So the praying began, and I mean very specific prayers. “God, if you want me working again, I need a morning schedule. I’d like to work for a company that values my roles as a wife and mother. I’d like to do stories that reflect a city I love and people I care about.” Sometimes crazy things happen. Very specific prayers get very specific answers. I was invited to join the morning team at Channel 13 Action News, anchoring the 5-7 a.m. show. My work schedule has me off by noon every day. My bosses could not be more supportive of my family life. And when I step off the morning anchor desk, I get to report on the people who make Las Vegas a better place to live. These are the people who make my days full, worthwhile and inspiring. These people are the reason I love this job so much. To date, I’ve done more than 300 stories about people who make Las Vegas a better place to live. But I wasn’t exactly prepared for the response. After I interviewed doctors who give free medical care, Volunteers in Medicine and the Hope Clinic saw an increase in volunteers as well as receiving some huge financial gifts. And when I did a story about three women who crochet blankets for cancer patients, viewers began dropping off bags and bags of yarn. So much yarn started coming in, we devoted an entire cubicle to storing it until I could make a delivery. And one of my favorite stories, Project 150, was about a group of Clark High School alumni who help homeless teens. Their mission has now spread to more than a dozen schools and since our story aired, Project 150 received a $100,000 donation. While we’re excited about the way our stories are being embraced, Channel 13 doesn’t make Las Vegas a better place

family

first

to live, we all do. There is a growing movement of people in this city who are putting others before themselves. We see it in teachers, nurses, neighbors and students. We certainly see it in our viewers. And this growing movement deserves a place in local newscasts. We need to let you know about the bad stuff— it arms you with information to keep your family and finances safe and your future secure. But an entire newscast like this doesn’t accurately reflect the city we live in. I am humbled to be the reporter who gets to shine a light on the good stuff. Like I said, these stories inspire me. We hope they do the same for you. Beth Fisher anchors Good Morning Las Vegas weekdays from 5-7 a.m. on KTNV, Channel 13. You can see her stories on the people who make Las Vegas a better place to live every morning at 5:45 a.m. and 6:45 a.m. If you have a story idea, please email Beth at bfisher@ktnv.com.

Yoga: Good Things Around the Bends

F

or a healthier body and spirit, Silver State Orthopedics lead surgeon David Silverberg recommends yoga. Stress on joints lead to injury as Dr. Silverberg knows from his practice. Dr. Silverberg said he recently began practicing yoga and has seen instant benefits. “My flexibility is improved,” said Dr. Silverberg, a shoulder and elbow specialist. “And as an orthopedic surgeon I know all too well the consequences of tight joints.” Joints are happiest, Silverberg said, when they move freely and achieve their full natural range of motion. Stiff, tight joints can get painful and disrupt the body’s natural motion and harmony. Unlike some sports, which call for stop-on-a-dime direction changes that can stress and damage joints, yoga allows for slow entry and exit from poses. Using yoga for fitness is hardly a trend; it’s been practiced for decades. Volumes of books have been written on the practice; Claire Dederer had a best-seller writing a memoir on the topic, “Poser: My Life in 23 Poses.” Yoga continues to add converts, like Dr. Silverberg. Ronna Timpa, founder of Workplace ESL Solutions, has received huge benefits from yoga. “I played soccer from high school till age 40. Then I played tennis till 44. I got hurt and needed big knee surgery, a bone transplant because there was a two-centimeter hole in my knee from the wear and tear over 30 years of sports. I couldn’t play soccer or tennis and it hurt to walk. So I tried yoga. I couldn’t even straighten my leg at first, but I felt safe in the yoga room. I’ve been doing it for a year and a half years now and I get a great workout without the risk of injury. For me, I need yoga to calm my mind

and work my muscles and cardiovascular system,” she said. For a feeling of ease, some people have gravitated toward hot yoga, performed in rooms heated to 95 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit with 40 percent humidity. In a study sponsored by the American Council on Exercise, John Porcari, head of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse’s exercise and sport science department, said, “I think some people are attracted to hot yoga because it’s easier to go through a greater range of motion when your muscles are warmer.” According to yogaaccessories.com, heat may help boost the immune system as the resulting sweat cleanses the skin. Hot yoga may also encourage people to continue with workouts longer. Stephanie Dixon of Summerlin Yoga said all types of yoga have been proven to reduce the risk of injury and help people who have suffered injuries to ease back into an active lifestyle. “Whether you are a beginner or more advanced, you can restore your body, mind, and spirit,” said Dixon, who recently converted her studio from a Bikram format to offer additional class options for students. “I once had a serious back injury and was supposed to have surgery and through yoga I was able to heal my spine,” she said. As yoga benefits the body, it also helps mindfulness, Silverberg suggests. As yoga practitioners focus on positioning their hands and feet, they also focus on breathing. Dixon also explained that it is not about doing the postures perfectly. As long as participants give their best effort and attempt all of the postures correctly, those practicing yoga will receive the same therapeutic benefits as someone who is able to do a posture with a high degree of flexibility, balance and strength.

Fruits and Vegetables: health

The perfect food for weight loss, health and energy

age & management

“I

f you’re not going to finish your dinner, at least finish your vegetables.” That was possibly the first and simplest dietary advice your parents ever gave you. But as we matured into responsible adults (an ongoing process), we started trusting the health advice of others who didn’t have the inherent trust and respect we had for our parents. We began to try different diets. Deep down, we knew what needed to be done to stop the weight teeter-totter for good; but we also knew that choice would begin the battle of wills where it feels like that second helping of, fill in the blank, is the greatest experience in the world. Wouldn’t it be nice to stop the head games and still be satisfied after a meal? Research has shown that eating more fruits, vegetables and whole grains while consuming less animal products encourages these goals due to its fiber, vitamins, mineral and disease-protecting phytochemicals. When I made the goal to increase my whole grain, fruits and vegetables, I saw that meat was getting pushed off my plate but I was still getting plenty of protein. My skin looked great, I had more energy and I dropped a pants size. Looking at my food diary, I realized I was eating less fat and sodium. It made sense since animal products are laden with sodium, fat and cholesterol. No matter how lean the meat is, it will always have these calorie-dense and diseasecontributing elements. However, you can eat plant-based protein (whole grains, nuts, seeds and legumes/beans) until your heart is content and lower your cholesterol and feel full on fewer calories. Take a look at how eating more plant-based foods can help aid with various health concerns: Weight loss: Feel full on fewer calories. The fiber, vitamins, and minerals that fruits, vegetables, and whole grains offer us are essential to weight loss. A multivitamin is not going to make the cut when it comes to fiber-filled foods that are packed with nutrients.

Fiber is shown to slow down the passage of food through the stomach and gastrointestinal tract. This pace of movement makes it easier to eat fewer calories and feel full. Diabetes and heart disease: Fiber acts like a scrub brush in your body. It aids in removing all the plaque and unhealthful debris in our blood to lower cholesterol. Cancer: Increasing fruits, vegetables and whole grains in the diet has been linked with decreased risk of many different cancers for various reasons. Overall 35-60 percent of cancers can be linked to our diet. Visit the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine website for more detailed information, pcrm.org. eet Dr. Laurie, a dentist who has been practicing for more than 27 years, offering general dentistry with a focus on cosmetic, reconstructive, and TMJ. More than creating a beautiful smile, she has developed her practice using a totally different approach that one might not expect at a dentist’s office. Along with a commitment in presenting comprehensive dental care, accepting complicated restorative cases, creating the best possible solutions to restore or build a smile, Dr. Laurie’s first rule is that she only sees one patient at a time. When a patient walks into Dr. Laurie’s office, the first thing they notice is the very spacious, comfortable, quiet reception area. This room was designed to be more like a living room in a home instead of a typical waiting room. Since she sees only one patient at time, all she needs are four very nice chairs creating a calming and relaxed atmosphere. Cookies are baked several times a day for a wonderful aroma and for her patients to enjoy. Several types of coffee and tea are offered along with wine in the afternoon. Her team of three highly trained professionals, along with Dr. Laurie, focuses on the one patient since that patient is the most important person in the world during their treatment.

FALL 2013 | lvwomanmagazine.com

After being seated in the state-of-the-art examination room, the patient can look out and watch 40 birds in an enclosed aviary to bring that feeling of serenity to the experience. In fact, Dr. Laurie completely remodeled her office last year with her patient’s comfort in mind. Televisions are placed in every exam room and during the initial visit; a complete executive physical of the mouth and teeth is conducted. One of the many uses for the television is that a camera takes photos of the examination so the patient can see exactly what the dentist sees with her magnifying glasses. The size of the screen, 47 inches, is critical to make certain the patient can see exactly what is going on during the exam. The first visit usually takes about 90 minutes of which Dr. Laurie spends about 45 minutes with each patient. “I have found that by investing that much time and detail into the first visit, it saves the patient time,” she said. “Often, patients are accustomed to the one tooth at a time approach and sometimes (the visit occurs) when a tooth is broken or they are in pain. By examining them comprehensively, the patient leaves with so much knowledge, many patients comment on how thorough the exam is and that it is the first time in their life they have had their dental health looked at in such detail. “If the patient can see exactly what is going on in their mouth, they can make an informed choice on how they want to proceed,” said Dr. Laurie. The decision is totally up to the patient and Dr. Laurie strives to make certain each person is empowered with their choices. Dr. Laurie does explain ways to restore health and function along with enhancing esthetics if so desired. Dr. Laurie offers a variety of services along with general dentistry to include some of the following: Non-Surgical Facelift A dentist offering a facelift? One of the most visible signs of aging is a changing smile. Front and back teeth break down or suffer from wear and tear as the years pass. It’s not just a smile; it’s the facial appearance as well. Most people don’t realize that the front teeth support the lips and the back teeth support the face and jaw joint. The lips are the only muscle in the body not supported by a bone. According to Dr. Laurie, what happens is that the distance from a person’s nose to their chin collapses. While this might be four to five millimeters, it does make a difference in what their face looks like. It’s like the lower third of the face “squishes up.” If the teeth become shorter due to wear and grinding; the lips can become thinner and the profile can become flatter. By restoring the length of the teeth to their original size, the lips and profile will become fuller and more youthful. By building up the back teeth, this creates less wrinkles, tighter necks and stronger chins for a more youthful appearance and better dental health. Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Many Americans suffer from headaches, migraines, unexplained pain in the face, jaw or teeth. Others suffer from a pain in the neck or back, tingling in the fingers or ringing in their ears. Some have earaches, recurring or constant jaw pain, or tooth pain. While many search for answers (and relief); in good faith doctors misdiagnose the problem and the symptoms remain. Dr. Laurie has discovered in her practice that many times the

L

medical condition is Temporomandibular Joint Disorder. The most common cause of TMD is Malocclusion, otherwise more commonly referred to as a bad bite. In this case, the upper and lower teeth are misaligned and do not close in the correct way, whether functioning or at rest. The Temporomandibular Joints are small joints in front of each of the ears that keep the lower jaw connected to the skull. This complex network of teeth, bones, muscles, tendons and nerves are normally associated with manipulating the jaw and mouth to speak and chew, but when there is a dysfunction, it can also cause problems in other areas of the body. Dr. Laurie can isolate the problem and fix it so that the pain is gone.

Smile Makeover versus Full Mouth Reconstruction Speaking of dental health, Dr. Laurie advocates good internal health as well as a beautiful smile. The best analogy to explain this concept is that of a home. While one can decorate and make their home beautiful, if the foundation is cracked and shifting, there will problems and the home can eventually collapse despite the pretty façade. It is the same with teeth. While so much can be done to create a beautiful smile, it is essential that any functional problems with teeth, mouth and gums are addressed and treated. A smile makeover is just cosmetic while a full mouth reconstruction combines both aesthetics and function. Master Ceramist When it comes to smiles, Dr. Laurie has a master ceramist on site that can create custom veneers, colors and shapes. Working closely together; Dr. Laurie, the ceramist and the patient can create a mock up, also known as the “trial smile” that can be tested. Together they can determine if subtle changes need to be made before the final restorations are created. With this procedure, there are no surprises and everyone knows that they will be satisfied with the end results. Dr. Laurie and her ceramist have worked as a team for over 15 years and the personal touch is evident in creating natural looking smiles that fit the patient’s face, not just their mouth. Implants A dental implant is a permanent tooth replacement option that is directly inserted into the jawbone that is formed and colored to match natural teeth. Dental implants create a stronger replacement tooth because the tooth and the tooth’s root are replaced. With proper care, the implant can last a very long time and are more durable than other tooth replacement options. This is an option for one or several missing teeth and they can be placed in the upper or lower jaws to strengthen the smile.

Dr. Laurie graduated from the Oregon Health Sciences University and practiced in Oregon before relocating to Las Vegas to purchase the private practice of the founder of the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies. In fact, Dr. Laurie has continued to be a senior instructor at The Institute, located in the same building as her practice, which is a post graduate level program that attracts dentists from around the world. The Institute is a live patient treatment facility with two clinics, each having ten operatories. Dr. Laurie’s practice is a model dental practice created and designed to show the students how new technology is used in dentistry. Dr. Laurie has continued her advanced education including dental implant training, soft tissue laser for cosmetic re-contouring and periodontics, cosmetic dental photography, occlusion, comprehensive aesthetic reconstruction, full mouth reconstruction, computerized jaw movement and muscle tracking training, and laser certification. She is a member of the American Dental Association, the Nevada Dental Association, the International Association of Comprehensive Aesthetics, and the International College of Craniomandibular Orthopedics. She is an author and speaks nationally and internationally on advanced dental procedures. Dr. Laurie’s father was a dentist and that is what inspired her to enter the field of dentistry. “I love watching the transformation that happens when a patient is given back the smile and jaw support that they had in their youth,” Dr. Laurie explained. “It is very gratifying to be able give my patients the ability to smile with confidence but also not to have to worry about having a dental emergency and in some cases, relieving a life time of pain.” She has done volunteer work at the Huntridge Teen Clinic and in the month of October, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Laurie will offer free teeth bleaching for a donation to the Breast Cancer Society. Dr. Laurie recently got married and shares her passion for dentistry with her husband who consults with dental practices all over the world. “I have the practice of my dreams. I love what I do and I have the best patients who have supported me for so many years. I have never been happier.” This is evident in her attitude and her practice where she helps her patients with a new smile that is healthy both internally and attractive externally that can enhance appearance, boost confidence and renew a sense of self-esteem while promoting the best dental health possible. Las Vegas Minimally Invasive Surgery and Women’s Pelvic Health Center Knowing your options for pelvic health By Regina Arnold

health

age & management

60

T

he second most common surgery for a woman is a hysterectomy; 10 to 15 percent of women suffer from endometriosis and 1 in 3 women experience urinary incontinence sometime during their lifetime. With these statistics, it is essential that women be well informed regarding the advanced procedures that are available to them. The Las Vegas Minimally Invasive Surgery and Women’s Pelvic Health Center makes certain that their patients are aware of the different procedures available to women and their pelvic health needs. In the past, when women needed gynecological surgery, they would be admitted into the hospital for a three-tofive day stay followed by a six-to-eight week recovery at home. This was the normal procedure for gynecological doctors. However, with the ever-evolving practice of medicine, the times have changed. The new standard of care at the LVMISWPHC is evidence of this. “Women need to be made aware of the many options that are available to them,” said Dr. Warren Volker, medical director at the LVMIS-WPHC, “The times of long recoveries are in the past, minimally invasive procedures offer increased safety, faster recovery and less scarring.” Minimally invasive surgeries allow patients a quicker recovery time with a significantly lower amount of pain. Unlike traditional surgery, minimally invasive procedures do not involve large incisions. With MIS, small incisions—about the size of a pencil eraser—are made just large enough for minuscule cameras equipped with microscopes and tiny fiber-optic flashlights. Surgeons use this micro-technology to view inside the patient’s body on a high-definition monitor. “It is very rare to have to perform a traditional open hysterectomy, a technique in which the surgeon would use a T-cut to perform the surgery,” said Dr. Volker, “One of the main reasons this is still a standard procedure for most physicians is that they have not yet been sufficiently trained to perform minimally invasive procedures.” With smaller incisions there is less trauma caused to the

lvwomanmagazine.com | FALL 2013

patient’s body including less blood loss, making the surgery safer. There is also less scarring since the incision only requires one to two stitches. Patients who have undergone MIS stay up to 23 hours in the hospital with an at home recovery of up to two weeks. Dr. Volker and his staff have been working toward raising awareness of MIS surgical options since 2001, not only with his patients but also with physicians worldwide. “It is my hope that we can continue to train women’s health care professionals through our fellowship and resident education programs. This enables them to provide patients with a higher standard of Women’s care.” LVMIS-WPHC is recognized as a WellHealth Center of Excellence with a dual mission of providing state-of-the-art procedures to patients worldwide and providing education and training to over 3,500 physicians, domestic and internationally. With emphasis on patient education, the medical team at LVMIS-WPHC takes the time to assess each patient and provide them with only the highest quality of patient care. hen Kelly Garrett partnered with the doctors who created Proactiv, she knew she was onto something big. Helping to launch the new medical-grade skin care company from two of the most recognized dermatologists in the world is a big deal. Rodan + Fields Dermatologists is changing skin and changing lives all across the nation, but, as Garrett stated, “You only get to be first, once.” That’s why she is so passionate about introducing this opportunity to the Las Vegas Valley; since she knows that in business, timing is everything. “To be the first consultant in a major market like Las Vegas is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I have the honor of introducing people to this company and then teaching them how to create a life of total time and financial freedom. And thanks to our awardwinning products, they look great living it,” Garrett said. Garrett, 39, is the mother of three children, the eldest of which is a United States Marine. “I know how hectic life can be, but I also know how precious it is and how quickly time passes. When my son left for boot camp last summer, it truly occurred to me how blessed I am to be able to work from home and build a business around my life instead of trying to work my life around a job. Time freedom is a foreign concept to most people but it’s one they quickly grasp when they have a vehicle like Rodan + Fields that makes it possible,” she explained. “Rodan + Fields Dermatologists offers four, clinically proven regimens that address the skin care concerns that we all struggle with: sun damage, acne, sensitive skin and because we are all aging, all the time, our Redefine Regimen fights the signs of aging. When you pair it with our patent-pending Macro-Exfoliator the results are unprecedented.

“The Mac-E is an at-home, diamond-tip microdermabrasion machine that sweeps away 5 million dead skin cells in just five minutes, once a week. And with our Doc Smart technology, Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields have taken the guesswork out of properly exfoliating. The Mac-E is preprogrammed to exfoliate each section of your face and neck with the proper intensity and our cooling gels ensure a spa-like experience in the comfort of your home. What we all need to remember is when it comes to your skin; the key to hydration is exfoliation. This tool is sweeping away dead skin all across the nation, so it’s exciting to introduce The Mac-E to the Las Vegas Valley.” Dr. Shoib Myint, board certified facial plastic and cosmetic surgeon and author of “Nonsurgical Periorbital Rejuvenation” stated, “I believe in nonsurgical facial rejuvenation which is why I offer Rodan + Fields to my patients as a go to product for beautification.” Dr. Jeffrey Brown, board certified anti-aging and regenerative medicine, added, “I am an anti-aging physician and have focused on how to slow aging and repair problems from the inside out. With Rodan + Fields, I have found a product that produces fantastic results.” The products will change your skin, but the business will change your life. Drs. Rodan and Fields changed the face of acne when they developed Proactiv and now they are once again changing the face of skin care with Rodan + Fields Dermatologists. But this time, they want you to join them. Garrett asked, “If you could have partnered with the doctors when they created Proactiv, where would you be today? That is why I am looking for leaders to launch this market.” For more information visit rodanandfields.com.

The Fertility Center of Las Vegas The Importance of Gestational Carriers for Couples to Achieve Parenthood

A

By Regina Arnold

gestational carrier plays an important role in helping a couple achieve parenthood if a woman cannot carry a pregnancy. The gestational carrier, also known as a host uterus or formally known as a surrogate mother, will carry the pregnancy and also deliver the baby for the mother-to-be. One gestational carrier explained the process. “First I had to submit an application to the agency. Then I had to get medical records from all births. I had to gather all the information needed before being put into the gestational carrier pool. Once in the pool, intended parents looking for a gestational carrier were able to view my profile. The profile included my information, my husband’s information, hobbies and favorites.” Having a healthy uterus is essential to qualify as a gestational carrier. Then both the parents and the gestational carrier must be screened for infectious diseases and the carrier is also psychologically screened. Once a woman is chosen by a couple to be their gestational carrier, an introduction phone call is scheduled so the two parties can get to know each other. “I was chosen by my intended parents and of course I was given the option after the introduction phone call to see if I was willing to be a gestational carrier for them. I am so thankful that the intended parents I had were laid back and not so controlling. We clicked from day one and still keep in touch to this day, which makes my first-time experience as a gestational carrier very rewarding,” a gestational carrier said. Another carrier said she was able to develop a close relationship with the couple that she was carrying for. “Once we agreed that we wanted to work together, the medical screening began. We did not know each other beforehand, but we were able to form a close relationship throughout the pregnancy,” she said. The mother and the gestational carrier undergo a synchronized cycle, exactly like an egg donor in vitro fertilization cycle, so that the mother’s embryos are ready to transfer when the carrier’s uterus is ready to receive them. Bearing someone else’s child is a huge responsibility and these women are more than happy to do it. “It is a lot of pressure to be completely responsible for any life, but especially a developing baby. It adds an entirely different type of pressure to have other

health

age & management people who are involved in that process as well. I am also aware of the physical complications that can arise during pregnancy. That is scary to think about at times,” one gestational carrier explained. “The experience is “scary, exciting, stressful and extremely rewarding. Helping someone achieve parenthood is amazing.” Another carrier described her experience as knowing she had to care for herself the same way she did when she was pregnant with her own children, “I had to take a vow to care for not only myself, but also for someone else’s child.” She also explained that the best part of being a gestational carrier was the fact that she was able to complete a couple’s dream of having their family. For one gestational carrier, the birth was the climax of the entire experience. “Watching them hold her for the first time was the most amazing feeling in the world. They were in utter disbelief and overcome with love. I was amazed that it was possible to give someone such an amazing gift.” MAIN OFFICE: SUMMERLIN 8851 W. ccording to the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services in 2010, more than 17 percent of those living with HIV or AIDS are women. This statistic does not take into account women who have a loved one living with HIV or AIDS in their lives. This is one reason Mothers, Sisters, Daughters support group was created by Aid for AIDS of Nevada in 2009 for women affected by HIV/ AIDS—whether themselves or someone close to them. According to JeKeissa Mosley, lead case manager for AFAN, the group was started as a forum for HIV-positive women and female members of their support systems to become educated about HIV/AIDS and share information on how to access care and supportive services. The group was founded in the belief that this information would also increase compliance with medical care and treatment. “The group continues to provide a safe, caring environment for women to educate, empower and encourage one another. The sessions foster an environment of respect, self-acceptance and non-judgment,” said Mosley, “Mothers, Sisters, Daughters offers a place where once a month for two hours it’s all about her—the mother, the sister, the daughter. The topics discussed range from dating, raising children and favorite foods to T-cell counts, medication side effects and disclosure. Many times HIV may not be discussed at all.” While an HIV diagnosis is what brought these women together it does not define who they are. There are women in

lvwomanmagazine.com | FALL 2013

the group who received their diagnosis during a pregnancy, after saying “I Do” or on what they were told was their death bed. The average person may not have been able to exhibit the strength, perseverance or spirit that these women embody. Each story is as unique as the woman who shares it. While the support group is called Mothers, Sisters, Daughters, according to Mosley, “We have several women in the group who are married, engaged or who report to be in long-term relationships. There are several women who report to be in serodiscordant couples (where one member is HIV positive and the other is not).” Mothers, Sisters, Daughters’ members are all over 18 years of age. There is no cost for Mothers, Sisters, Daughters and meetings are held once a month at the AFAN location, usually the third Wednesday or Thursday at 10 a.m. At this time, participants do need to be current clients with AFAN. Community Counseling Center also offers individual and family counseling for those affected and infected by HIV. ately, health care has been overshadowed by Obamacare and the political fallout about insurance, costs and coverage. But our health is so much more than rhetoric. The women and men who enter the medical field to become physicians do so out of a desire to help guide everyone in living a healthy and happy life. At the end of the day, the clichÊ is true - She who has health, has hope; and she who has hope has everything. Our Doctors of the Desert personify their philosophy of giving compassionate care to each person and being part of the patient’s team to achieve and maintain good health. Some of the best medical professionals can be found in Southern Nevada with extensive training, state-of-the-art technology and

advanced education. Along with their practices, many doctors volunteer their time and talents to help our community. Whether it is battling a disease, taking a proactive approach to health, starting a family, maintaining good dental health, staying heart healthy, presenting our best image or taking care of our physical needs; these doctors are passionate about giving the best care available. All would agree, though, that it begins with the patient: give up smoking; eat healthier; exercise and get regular checkups. But most importantly, our physicians want their patients to talk to them, ask questions and explain any symptoms. Doctors of the Desert are part of Team You and ready to work with you on life-long health care and a happier, healthier life.

r. Mary Ann K. Allison is a practicing medical oncologist with Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada specializing in breast cancer. According to Dr. Allison, she enjoys getting to meet and interact with a wide variety of people who are appreciative of the care they receive. “Even though my patients are faced with a significant illness, as well as stress, they are generally very gracious,” Dr. Allison said. Dr. Allison’s healthcare career path was influenced by her family. Her mother was a nurse and her father worked in hospital administration. Before medical school, she worked as a medical technologist in a hematology lab where she gained practical experience. During medical school, she enjoyed learning internal medicine but maintained a strong interest in oncology and hematology due to her past work experience. Dr. Allison went on to earn her degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas and completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine as well as her fellowship in hematology-oncology at Baylor University Medical Center-Dallas. For the first 15 years of her career, Dr. Allison notes the changes in medicine were slower, but now they are more rapid, due to the advanced technology. However, one aspect she feels hasn’t changed is the one-on-one doctor to patient interaction and relationship building that makes all the difference in a patient’s care. “It has been—and always will be most important to maintain a level of trust with your patient,” Dr. Allison adds. Seeing a variety of patients with different types of cancer, Dr. Allison affirms it’s always important to recognize the changes in the body and health as the first line of defense in healthcare. Early detection is key, making it crucial that women always be aware of their bodies. Dr. Allison advises this, “Be persistent if you notice something strange and always advocate for yourself, you must remember that nobody knows you better than yourself.” According to Dr. Allison, Las Vegas has evolved into a leader in the medical industry. “I see more patients from out-of-state coming to Las Vegas for treatment. It’s very reassuring to the residents of Nevada that they can stay in town for treatment and remain with their families during the process instead of being uprooted to another state,” Dr. Allison said. She credits Comprehensive Cancer Centers for Nevada for

r. Margaret Terhar is a board-certified breast surgeon at Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada who dedicates her practice to patients with breast complications. She prides herself on being able to take control of a situation that can be quite scary for her patients and reassures them that she can help in their time of need. Dr. Terhar particularly enjoys two specific aspects of her job: the “detective” portion of figuring out if there is a problem and finding the solution, and the surgery portion of taking something apart and reassembling it in functioning order. Dr. Terhar also finds the patient interaction to be a stimulating part of her job. “The relationships I develop with the patients and their families are very special. It is something I truly enjoy,” she said. Motivated by her interest in biology and her desire to interact with people, she realized medicine was the right career choice. Specializing in surgery allowed Dr. Terhar to participate in a fast-paced and handson field, which she felt suited her well. Sub-specializing in diseases of the breast further granted her an opportunity to focus on an area where she felt her abilities were best utilized. After earning a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, she attended medical school and went on to spend five years completing a general surgery residency, becoming a board-certified general surgeon. Dr. Terhar has attended several post-graduate seminars to be trained in the most recent techniques and technologies of breast care. In her 23 years of practice, she has had the chance to accumulate a great deal of experience. She recently, obtained a certification in breast ultrasound from the American Society of Breast Surgeons. “We often say in medicine that our questions never change; only the answers change as we discover new information,” she said. At Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada, physicians are discovering new ways to evaluate breasts for cancer, new ways to deliver treatments and new ways to treat cancer. One of the new treatment advances is called partial breast radiation therapy. This treatment option, which is available to women who meet specific criteria, uses radioactive seeds instead of traditional radiation therapy and only requires five days of treatment instead of six weeks required for traditional radiation therapy. In the past, it had been considered too personal for women to

r. Farzaneh Farzin is a radiation oncologist with Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada specializing in multidisciplinary management of breast cancer, intensity modulated radiation therapy and stereotactic radiosurgery. She is also an adjunct clinical faculty at Touro University Nevada where she actively participates in the education and training of medical students who are performing radiation oncology rotations. Dr. Farzin says getting to know her patients, hearing their stories, seeing their strength and witnessing their determination to beat cancer are the elements she enjoys most about her career. “I strongly believe in taking the time to talk to my patients before scheduling their treatments so we can discuss questions or concerns. Facing cancer is challenging. By listening to how they are feeling at that moment, I am better equipped to help them cope during treatments,” she said. Dr. Farzin says even as a young girl, she wanted to help people. “I realized that physicians help people every day, so I set my sights on medicine,” she said. During her studies, she discovered an interest in cancer medicine and saw a need for more radiation oncologists, leading her to choose it as her specialty. “Now, I (get to) help people fight and beat cancer every day,” she said. There are many new technological advancements in the medical and radiation oncology fields including the only CyberKnife Stereotactic Radiosurgery machine in Southern Nevada available at CCCN. CyberKnife uses computer-operated robotics and imageguided technology to treat hard-to-reach tumors without damaging normal, healthy surrounding tissue. When talking about hard-toreach tumors, doctors often refer to masses that are too close to vital organs for traditional surgery, making the use of CyberKnife a significant benefit to the community. Also, radiation technology is now less toxic and more tolerable for patients. The development of Xofigo, a cancer drug in the form of liquid radiation, is less painful and more effective in treating metastatic/advanced prostate cancer. Xofigo was a clinical trial at CCCN titled Radium 223 that was approved by the FDA in May. Dr. Farzin advises everyone to schedule regular checkups and to tell their doctors about anything unusual—bumps, lumps, discoloration of

The ORION Cancer Foundation provides financial assistance to cancer patients in Nevada who struggle to afford the essentials of daily living. Other organizations are always seeking volunteers including Susan G. Komen of Southern Nevada, Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada and the American Cancer Society. r. Karen S. Jacks is a medical oncologist with Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada. Along with the ever-changing field of oncology, her relationships with her patients are both equally rewarding and challenging. “The relationships I create with my patients and their families are extremely stimulating to me. I thrive off of the long-term, frequent interaction I have with each patient. However, this can be very challenging [at times] when we experience loss,” said Dr. Jacks. Dr. Jacks entered the medical field to care for people who wanted and needed her help. She shared that each patient motivates her to provide the best care possible. “There is something I take away from each patient I encounter and it keeps me coming back to work every day,” she said. Dr. Jacks completed her undergraduate studies at the University of North Carolina and earned her medical degree at Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. After medical school, she concluded her education with a three-year internal medicine residency followed by a three-year fellowship in medical oncology/hematology. Equally important to Dr. Jacks’ career is the specialized training, one-on-one patient care and the constant advances in medications, technologies and treatments available for cancer. The constant change is a challenge, but Dr. Jacks explained, “Within the challenge is what I enjoy most; the field of medicine is quite dynamic and does not allow for boredom.” The most pertinent advancement in Dr. Jacks’ specialty, breast cancer, is the FDA approval of two medications for HER2+ breast cancer. Dr. Jacks credits her continuing education in medicine to Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada which strives to maintain the latest technologies for the treatment of cancer and has a large research division which provides numerous Phase I, II and III clinical research trials for patients. “If I can offer any advice to readers and potential patients, I would highly recommend getting regular cancer screenings,” said Dr. Jacks.

Screening is the best way to detect early cancers that are potentially curable or to find pre-malignant lesions that can be treated to prevent a cancer from developing. Also, maintaining routine check-ups with your doctor is vital as prevention and early detection provide a better chance at a cure. With all of the world-class medical care available in Nevada, Dr. Jacks is pleased that residents don’t have to leave the state for quality care. “Las Vegas has become a leader in the medical industry, which is why it was such a draw for me to move here,” she said. r. Donald W. Tice is a leading physician providing a quality-based approach within his area of expertise: metabolic, hormonal and bariatric medicine. With over 25 years practicing medicine; it was the sign of an alarming number of patients with obesity issues in the last 10 years that engaged him to enroll in a metabolic bariatric medicine fellowship from the American Society of Bariatric Medicine that emphasized hormone therapy. “Obesity was causing patients depression, diabetes, cardiovascular and other metabolic diseases. As I researched and completed training in obesity medicine, I discovered that a significant contributing factor to obesity was hormone imbalance,” Dr. Tice said. Further research and studies on hormones led him to assess that if either nutrition or hormones were out of balance that it would cause the other to become imbalanced. This resulted in a patient who could experience a variety of symptoms including, but not limited to, weight gain, mood swings, hair loss, insomnia, intolerance to cold, hot flashes, fatigue, loss of libido and increased cancer risk. “In my office, I emphasize genetic testing and family history because clues to disease risks and other problems may lie in a patient’s history or gene code,” Dr. Tice explained. Bioidentical hormones have been around for decades but have emerged over the last several years as a treatment of choice for many patients. Dr. Tice spotlights bioidentical hormone replacement therapy because properly administered hormone therapy and nutrition can also prevent or slow the occurrence of many diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer’s, cardiovascular disease, strokes, arthritis and diabetes. Testosterone therapy for women is a commonly overlooked treatment for behavioral and hormonal imbalance. However, the effect of testosterone on the human body for both men and women is being reexamined. Testosterone therapy relieves many women of premenstrual syndrome and post-menopausal symptoms without increasing cancer risk, making it an alternative worth researching further. As one of a few physicians in the country holding credentials specializing in metabolic, bariatric and hormonal treatment, Dr. Tice’s active role in reviewing new studies, articles and taking additional courses on hormone medicine outside of his required specific certification in metabolic and bariatric medicine, keeps him on the leading edge. He’s also spent the last four years training for certification by the American Board of Obesity Medicine and is licensed to practice medicine in Nevada, Arizona, South Carolina and Florida.

r. K. Warren Volker is a practicing female pelvic reconstructive surgeon and CEO of WellHealth Medical Group. He admits that he receives great satisfaction in taking care of his patients, doing research and training surgical fellows. As a researcher, educator, surgeon and innovator, Dr. Volker is regarded and well respected as a pioneer in women’s health issues. Motivated by his interest in science and the human body at an early age; he found his particular enthusiasm in science as he went through high school and college focused on biochemistry. It was evident to him this would be his chosen career path. Dr. Volker went on to earn his MD and a Ph.D. degree in biochemistry and molecular biology within a six-year program. After graduating from medical school he did a 4-year OB/GYN residency and additional training in advanced minimally invasive surgery. He considers himself very fortunate to have both a clinical career as well as business career. As part of the faculty at Harbor University of California, Los Angeles and University of Nevada School of Medicine, he maintains that this allows him to be current with medical practices by keeping in touch with medicine as a practicing physician, alongside making business decisions that affect how healthcare is delivered. While some might consider the myriad of responsibilities he assumes overwhelming, Dr. Volker is quick to point out that he finds the combination extremely exciting and rewarding. Keeping on the pulse of medical and technological advances in his field, he underscores robotics and minimally invasive surgeries as visible leaps. “I am able to perform major surgeries through small incisions (about the size of a pencil eraser) that I once had to do through large abdominal incisions,” Dr. Volker adds. Many new approaches to pelvic floor problems including urinary incontinence, prolapse, endometriosis, abnormal bleeding, fibroid tumors in the uterus, as well as a whole host of other female problems have revolutionized the treatment strategies physicians can offer their patients. As it relates to the Las Vegas community, Dr. Volker acknowledges WellHealth Quality Care as leader; showcasing their recruitment of top specialist from some of the most respected institutions in the world over the years. He applauds WellHealth Medical Group’s effort for giving back to the community in their continued sponsorship of several local charities such as Susan G. r. Charu Dhingra is a gynecologic surgeon who prides herself on educating her patients and partnering with them on their road to well-being. Her commitment to offering extensive education to each patient on their many available treatment options, in addition to supporting a patient’s optimal treatment choice, is at the cornerstone of her healthcare philosophy that she feels resonates with her patients. “Women are most comfortable when they understand all the options available to them. For me, one of the most gratifying parts of my work is that the women under my care are involved in all aspects of their medical decision making,” Dr. Dhingra said. Her expertise in uro-gynecology, the study and treatment of pelvic floor disorders in women, is supplemented by her integral role in a research team that is on the leading edge of the diagnosis and treatment of pelvic floor disorders. Staying on the pulse of medical and technological advances in this field, she points to the following as a sign of progress that is directly benefiting her patients: minimally invasive surgery which allows patients a quicker recovery time with a significantly lower amount of pain and less trauma to the body. “Ninety-five percent of our patients go home the same day if they have a surgery with one of our physicians,” Dr. Dhingra said. As a Cornell University and Mount Sinai School of Medicine alum, Dr. Dhingra boasts a note-worthy academic background. Her post-doctoral training included one year of surgery, four years of OB-GYN residency, and three years of additional fellowship training in uro-gynecology/female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery in Philadelphia. According to Dr. Dhingra, an office visit to a well-trained physician might improve the quality of life significantly. Incontinence is common, but not normal. If there is pelvic or bladder pain, pelvic organ prolapse, problems emptying the bladder or rectum, urinary and fecal incontinence, painful intercourse and other conditions; it’s crucially important to address it with the doctor. Seeking (or being referred to) an uro-gynecologist when experiencing these problems or the need for special expertise in minimally invasive gynecology and vaginal surgery can make all the difference. According to Dr. Dhingra, very few physicians in Las Vegas

he Fertility Center of Las Vegas founder, Dr. Bruce Shapiro, has dedicated more than two decades of scientific research to improving the safety and success rates of fertility treatments. Dr. Shapiro’s findings have reduced the incidence of side effects following ovarian stimulation and have improved embryo implantation rates allowing the transfer of fewer embryos. He was one of the first physicians to perform and report on blastocyst transfer in the U.S, the procedure allowing transfer of fewer embryos into the uterus while maintaining high pregnancy rates and reducing the risk of multiple pregnancies. This has resulted in better safety and success through good science, ultimately leading to some of the highest reported birth rates in the U.S. Dr. Shapiro presents his widely published research regionally, nationally and internationally, most recently as a featured presenter at the European Society of Human Reproduction & Embryology. Dr. Shapiro holds specialty board certification in obstetrics and gynecology and sub-specialty board certification in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. He established and heads the University of Nevada School of Medicine-Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Amsterdam, Holland. He completed his fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at Yale University after his residency at Yale New Haven Hospital.

r. After practicing medicine in Las Vegas for over 20 years and receiving many top doctor awards, Dr. Michael Mall wanted to return to practicing medicine the way it was intended. He grew up in the “Marcus Welby, M.D.” era, wanting to practice medicine like Dr. Welby did on the TV screen. In 2006, Dr. Mall did just that; he converted his traditional medical practice of thousands of patients to a personalized healthcare model providing care to a maximum of 600 patients. Among the many benefits of Personalized Healthcare are sameday, thorough 30-minute appointments with 24/7 access to Dr. Mall’s cell phone number and up to 75 percent fewer days spent in the hospital over any other non-personalized healthcare plans. He develops a true partnership with his patients to deliver the best care for each patient. Dr. Mall’s patients benefit from his approach to optimize their health and longevity through preventative programs, hormone replacement therapy, nutritional repletion programs and age management programs. His philosophy is that nothing is more important than knowing your doctor truly cares about you. “My practice is a one-stop shop,” Dr. Mall said. He offers onsite X-ray services, cardiac stress testing, ultrasound services and laboratory services. Because of the extra time devoted to each visit, Dr. Mall usually communicates directly with the specialist to whom he is referring patients to further facilitate optimal care. Minor surgical procedures are performed for lacerations, cyst removal, skin biopsies and ingrown toenail removal. Joint injections, muscle trigger point injections, and IV hydration and vitamin infusions round out the full complement of services provided. How do you know if Personalized Healthcare is right for you and your family? Dr. Mall offers free, 30-minute face-to-face interviews with potential patients to discuss the benefits of enrolling into his personalized program. Who do you trust to optimize your health?

he secret to younger looking skin is stimulating the production of our own fibroblasts to produce more collagen in the skin. How is that done, you ask? Certainly not with surgery as that only stretches our old, thin, sun-damaged skin even thinner, providing a smooth, but odd appearance to the skin. With the right combination of resurfacing and skin tightening lasers in the right hands, the skin actually becomes biologically younger, smoother and more elastic. Working with laser companies and other laser physicians, Dr. Mall has contributed to the development of protocols to maximize energy delivery and optimize the results of laser treatments without sacrificing patient safety. The three targeted areas of the skin— superficial, middle and deep layers—need specific wavelength lasers to best treat each layer. Combining lasers from two trusted and renowned laser companies, Cutera and Alma, allows for optimal results for each patient. Sun-damaged brown spots, wrinkles, fine lines and cellulite are no problem for Dr. Mall and his state-of-the-art lasers. Being a results-driven laser center, New Image Advanced Laser Skin Center is dedicated to not only providing superior results, but also to the comfort of patients undergoing treatment. A combination of strong topical anesthetics and some mildly sedating medication minimize any discomfort from the procedure. Most laser treatments result in little to no down time or aftercare, aside from mandatory use of sunscreen. Dr. Mall at New Image has delivered non-surgical laser skin rejuvenation with excellent results for the last seven years. Dr. Mall and New Image also sell and educate their clients on skincare products that have proven results scientifically and that complement each laser procedure performed. Dr. Mall and his excellently trained staff provide complimentary comprehensive consultations that are custom tailored to each patient’s needs, wants and budget. Although Dr. Mall spends much of his time working, he does find time to exercise and take in the latest movie to relax.

rthodontic specialist Dr. David Alpan uses a full range of methods to provide children, teenagers and adults with beautiful smiles. Along with orthodontics, Dr. Alpan and his team focus on their patients’ comfort with an office designed to be a welcoming, calm environment. There is complimentary WiFi, bottled water and a place for brushing teeth before appointments. Each team member has years of experience in orthodontic care and participates in continuing education courses to keep their skills up to date. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Dr. Aplan is a third generation dentist, “with DDS stranded in my DNA. I decided to be an orthodontist when I was 15 years old. My father and grandfather were both dentists and I liked helping people,” he said. Following his dream, Dr. Alpan earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery, Orthodontic Specialty certificate and Master of Science in Dentistry degree for his master’s thesis written on the results of the two-year TMJ research project he completed during his orthodontic specialty training. “I decided to specialize in orthodontics because I love the challenges and rewards of improving a persons’ smile along with their self-esteem,” said Dr. Alpan, “Every patient leaves our office with a bigger and brighter smile with more self-confidence. Our team strives to make every patient feel like he or she is a member of our family.” According to Dr. Alpan, the goal of Alpan Orthodontics is to help shape the future of patients’ interaction with the world. “I will never forget the first time a patient told me her braces treatment changed her life,” said Dr. Alpan, “A smile is forever and tells the world how you feel about yourself. I am honored to help people create and maintain healthy beautiful smiles.” The recent technological advances used at Alpan Orthodontics include Damon Braces, Invisalign, Incognito, Temporary Anchorage Devices and Propel. The improved features of Damon braces versus traditional braces are that Damon braces are self-ligating, smaller, faster and more comfortable with less need for extractions and shorter treatment time. Invisalign is a series of clear aligners that incrementally moves the teeth from the start to the desired end result with no braces. Incognito are lingual braces that are also custom made to the

She had always wanted to be a doctor and recalled, “When I was little, our family doctor made house calls. His black bag and the idea that he makes people feel better captivated me. At the same time, I developed a fascination with health and science, and wanted to learn as much as possible about nature. By the time I was 6, I knew I wanted to be a doctor when I grew up.” It was her exposure to plastic and reconstructive surgery during medical school that convinced her that this was the field of medicine she wanted to practice. “I was amazed with the reconstructive cases tackled by plastic surgeons, including breast reconstruction, pediatric reconstructive surgery, burn reconstructive surgery and hand surgery. In residency, this interest expanded to all aspects of plastic surgery, including cosmetic surgery and skin care.” As a plastic surgeon, her skill sets are very diverse, just as her patients’ ages and treatment requirements. She will treat patients with major reconstructive challenges such as those needing reconstructive surgery after cancer surgery or traumatic injuries. She also sees patients with purely aesthetic concerns, from wrinkle treatment with Botox or Hyaluronic Acid (HA) fillers to major cosmetic makeovers of the face and/or body. “No two people or problems are exactly alike and it is always interesting and challenging. I find it all to be rewarding,” she said. Dr. Fisher has specialized training and keeps up with advancements in plastic surgery. On the reconstructive end of the spectrum, face transplantation has changed everything. It offers life-changing improvements in aesthetics, function and quality of life that could not have previously been imagined. In cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, fat transfer procedures have found new applications. Since it has been discovered that fat contains stem cells, there is more and more research being done and the potential applications are boundless. In cosmetic surgery, it is common now to harvest fat by liposuction from one area of the body and transplanting it to another area that requires more volume or better shape, like the

Smoking and sun damage cause premature ageing. I also can’t emphasize enough the need to use a broadspectrum sunscreen with SPF 50. This serves the purpose both for skin cancer prevention and for preventing signs of aging.” Dr. Fisher supports many causes, in particular local businesses. According to Fisher, she believes local businesses are the foundation of the economy for each community. When not working, Dr. Fisher said, “I love spending time with my family, and I am grateful for every second of it. I enjoy cooking, gardening, exercising and constantly learning. r. Sandeep Reddy is a board-certified pediatrician who specializes in diagnosing and treating childhood illnesses, diseases and injuries. As a member of HealthCare Partners Medical Group, a leading physician-run group providing primary, specialty and urgent care services in Southern Nevada, Dr. Reddy said she could not ask for a more rewarding career. “It is extremely gratifying to care for the most vulnerable members of our society and help parents raise healthy children,” Dr. Reddy said. “Children are the building blocks for how society will function in the future.” Dr. Reddy credits her success and devotion to pediatrics to her resilient work ethic and straightforward demeanor, as well as her appreciation for the energy and innocence she witnesses in her patients. Pediatricians must earn a doctoral degree in medicine and receive special training in working with children. In many ways, the path to a medical career in India, Dr. Reddy’s native country, differs from that of the United States. Dr. Reddy’s journey began when she attended Government Medical College in Patiala, India. She then moved to the U.S. for a three-year residency at Metropolitan Hospital Center in New York. In addition to years of education, other primary skills are necessary to successfully treat young patients. A desire to work with children is essential, but that’s just the foundation for being a good pediatrician. Inspiration is needed, too. Reddy realized her calling to medicine as a young girl growing up in India, where she was influenced by her best friend’s parents, who were both doctors. Reddy and her friend would often travel to medical camps with the couple to watch them tend to those without access to medical care. The level of compassion and respect demonstrated by these doctors inspired her to pursue a career in medicine. Dr. Reddy said she is always aware of the latest advancements in the pediatrics field, many of which have changed how she cares for and protects her patients. Some examples include proposed car-seat laws requiring children to remain in rear-facing car seats until age 2 and new approaches to treating ear infections to prevent overuse of antibiotics. When it comes to caring for children, the most important advice

r. Alain Coppel, owner of Nevada Comprehensive Pain Center, has incorporated his degrees in chemical engineering and medicine with his love for science and medical training to provide care with compassion for those in pain and help them alleviate their suffering. “I enjoy knowing I have the ability to change lives or create a better quality of life for those who may be suffering from pain,” said Dr. Coppel, “The most gratifying part of my line of work is when we help patients achieve a tolerable or livable level of pain. Even better, many reach the point they no longer need pain management. That is true success.” According to Dr. Coppel, it is imperative to be proactive in continual education on the newest and most advanced procedures, techniques and treatments for pain. Nevada Comprehensive Pain Center is having phenomenal success with Neurostimulators and neurostimulation procedures. Neurostimulation is a process that provides pain relief by blocking the pain messages before they reach the brain. The neurostimulator sends out mild electrical impulses that reach the brain faster than the pain signal can arrive. In other words, it outsmarts the pain. The end result is that patients’ pain levels are dramatically reduced. The benefits include lowering medication levels, and in some circumstances, elimination of pain medication, providing patients with a better quality of life. Nevada Comprehensive Pain Center is the only center in Las Vegas to incorporate state of the art injection procedures as well. Direct Ultrasound and Fluoroscopic Image guidance greatly increases the efficiency and safety of each procedure performed. The key benefits of these procedures are patients experience reduced pain levels and significantly shorter down time. Dr. Coppel advises, “There are many other options for the treatment of pain than just medication. Far too often we see patients whose primary care physicians have not addressed the source of pain and continue to prescribe medication, many times to the point of addiction. Unfortunately for the patient, the physician then no longer feels comfortable prescribing pain medication and refers the patient to a pain management doctor. We then have to undo the damage done, getting the patient to the point where we can accurately address the pain and levels of pain. Once achieved, we can move forward in the incorporation of

his June, the American Medical Association classified obesity as a disease. Dr. Dana Trippi of Premier Physicians Weight Loss and Wellness thinks this dramatic designation is an important step in recognizing the critical part weight control plays in a healthy lifestyle. Dr. Trippi is board certified in bariatrics, the branch of medicine that deals with the treatment of obesity. She’s been cited in her specialty as a “Top Doctor” in 2011 and 2013 and has years of experience helping her patients achieve and maintain a healthy weight. “People come to us because they feel a loss of control about weight and they’re simply tired of buying larger clothing. They’ve tried other diets and weight-loss programs. The first thing we do is a complete physical and an interview to find out what’s causing weight gain. Then, we discuss realistic goals and talk about the barriers we’ve identified,” said Dr. Trippi. “An enormous part of what we do is education and motivation. The other part is equipping each person with the individualized tools they need to be successful in losing weight and in maintaining their target weight.” Of course, in a city like Las Vegas, appearance is also a big factor in the desire to stay trim. Doing so can even be a matter of job security in many cases. It’s likewise true that being overweight is more uncomfortable in warm climates. Health concerns, though, are paramount. According to Dr. Trippi, patients can expect a measurable improvement in overall health with a loss of just 5 to10 percent of their initial body weight. However, the disease designation of obesity helps everyone to understand that being overweight is not a problem to be solved, but a lifelong challenge to be managed. Premier specializes in developing realistic and customized weight control plans for each patient. As a medical facility staffed by accredited physicians, Premier is able to do health screenings, such as EKGs and blood tests, which may identify correctable conditions that lead to obesity. The clinic offers nutrition counseling and behavior modification strategies, critical in today’s convenience and fast food-oriented environment. When appropriate, physicians can prescribe appetite suppressants and other helpful pharmacological aids to weight loss. Most importantly, scheduled weigh-ins motivate patients to stay on track and enable staff to determine what additional support is necessary. Sometimes, losing weight can result in dramatic improvement

Until she came to Premier, no one had mentioned that being overweight is a major risk factor for her disease. Working with Premier, this patient has lost over 50 pounds, now has normal cholesterol and her eye damage has repaired itself. For most people, though, looking and feeling great are enough of a reward for weight loss. The AMA designation will encourage doctors to talk to their patients about the dangers of being overweight. Dr. Silverberg explained that he became an orthopedic surgeon because, “the type of surgery and the tools of the trade, but I was, and still am, a sports fanatic and orthopedic surgery seemed to impact all sports. Furthermore, orthopedic surgeons tended to be most similar to me in terms of personality and outside interests. Also, orthopedics allow for innovation.” There are constantly new technological advances, including a form of shoulder replacement that has recently been reintroduced in the last 10 years, after improving upon the technique from the original French concept 50 years ago. A reverse shoulder replacement can be a dramatic improvement over the traditional methods to treat severe shoulder fractures in the elderly. Also, it is used in cases of arthritis caused by long-standing rotator cuff tears. As for advice for those contemplating surgery, Dr. Silverberg advises, “It is more important than ever to connect with your surgeon. Selecting a specialist by reputation alone is not in the patient’s best interest if they don’t feel comfortable. Healthcare is becoming more impersonal as we enter the age of electronic medical records and busier caseloads. Patients need to feel like human beings rather than a type of orthopedic impairment. In my experience, patients who feel more connected to their surgeon seem to relax, listen better, comply and often have better outcomes.” Silver State Orthopedics supports multiple charities and offers programs and referral services in place to help assist lowincome patients. r. Cynthia Payne is a board certified optometrist specializing in the treatment and management of ocular disease and owner of Trendsetter Eyewear. She enjoys working with people to improve their vision, assess the health of their eyes and treat eye disease. She also provides pre- and post-operative care for patients at LASIK of Nevada in Las Vegas and Reno, Nev. Motivated by the freedom optometry provides, from the ability to practice anywhere, choosing to be self-employed or work for another doctor full time or part time, to working in research and teaching; Dr. Payne loved having choices that optometry provided. Dr. Payne has been practicing in private optometry since 1997 and opened Trendsetter Eyewear in 2011. She attended the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, where she earned her Doctorate of Optometry. A graduate of Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn., she received a Bachelor of Science with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry. She also completed one year of graduate study at the University of Tennessee, Memphis in neuroscience and worked for an additional two years as a research assistant in Cancer Pharmacology at the University of Tennessee, Memphis. Dr. Payne points out the considerable growth her field has had, particularly in the realm of education, “There are currently 21 optometry schools in the United States. In 1997, when I graduated, there were only 13,” she said. According to Dr. Payne, technological advances in this field are broken down into two components, “Optometry is somewhat unique in that there is both an optical component and a healthcare component,” said Dr. Payne. For example, in the optical field, some of the newest options are digitally designed eyeglass lenses (computer designed for optimized vision, i.e. sharper vision in all parts of the lens and better night vision) and more options of contact lenses that are healthier to wear (more oxygen transmission, stay cleaner, better for dryness). In the healthcare field, one of the hot topics currently is the condition known as dry eye. Dry eye is caused by either inadequate tear production, where not enough tears are produced to lubricate the eye, or abnormal tear composition where the makeup of the tears is insufficient to provide adequate lubrication. Lipiflow, a procedure addressing the root cause of evaporative dry eye, has recently been approved by the FDA for the treatment of dry-eye syndrome.

Credentials: OD Medical Specialty: Optometrist Address: 1225 S. Fort Apache Road, Suite 145, Las Vegas, NV 89117 Phone: 702.479.5222 Website: trendsettereyewear.com Dr. Payne highlights that one of the healthiest choices a person can make for their eyes is ultraviolet protection. Ultraviolet increases the incidence of cataracts, macular degeneration, pterygium and skin cancer. Choosing sunglasses or eyeglasses with UV protection helps decrease the risk of these diseases of the eye (and wrinkles). She explains all the things that are good for the rest of the body also apply to the eyes; like no smoking (smoking increases the risks of macular degeneration, cataract, glaucoma, diabetes, dry-eye syndrome, thyroid disease); maintaining a balanced nutrition (antioxidants, omega-3, lutein and zeaxanthin for the macula); and routine exercise. One local charity that aid in the field of Optometry is the Lion’s Club. The Lion’s Club collects and distributes used donated glasses in third world countries to help improve the vision and quality of life for the people in those countries. Dr. Payne and her staff accept donations for them in their Trendsetter Eyewear office. Outside of work, Dr. Payne enjoys being a citizen of the world, traveling and exploring new cities.

Embraces social media through education, development and unconventional methods

my Jo Martin is the founder and CEO of Digital Royalty and Digital Royalty University, as well as a New York Times bestselling author. Founded in April 2009, Digital Royalty develops digital integration and social media strategies for corporate and entertainment brands, professional athletes, sports teams and leagues. Digital Royalty University provides customized education programs including strategic and tactical social media training. Martin’s list of clients includes Double Tree by Hilton, Dana White, The UFC, Fox Sports and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. In 2012, Martin relocated from Phoenix to Las Vegas after her company received funding from the Vegas Tech fund and wanted to take part in the Downtown Revitalization Project. According to Martin, “There’s a paradigm shift happening right now. With the advent of crowd funding, we are seeing more and more innovative ideas come from small startup companies and power is shifting away from big corporate companies. There’s much more of a focus on startups and people want to do business with people who are likeminded and share similar core values. Consensus is the true authority.” Recently, she wrote the New York Times best-selling book, “Renegades Write the Rules,” a social media how-to and beyond. It is full of personal anecdotes from working with Shaquille O’Neal and how they came together to create @Shaq, one of the most recognizable and original Twitter handles in the world. Martin grew up as a small-town girl going to rodeos and exploring the great outdoors. Since her father had a job with a construction company, her family moved frequently and she spent most of her adolescence in Kansas, Wyoming and Arizona. She believes that these experiences shaped her and fostered a true sense of curiosity and an addiction to change. “I’d say the most influential people thus far in my life have been my parents, for teaching me how to be resilient and adaptable, no matter the circumstances,” Martin said. As for mentors, while admitting there were many, she spoke about Tony Hsieh, “for being so humble and down to earth, despite all he’s accomplished. He’s truly a one-of-a-kind, common sense innovator.” She would also say Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, “because he is the hardest working person I know and taught me that sometimes your hustle factor is often your differentiating factor.” According to Martin, she mentors in many ways. “I have several friends who are starting their own businesses and try to help out where I can. I also help mentor my teammates at Digital Royalty. I think the best, most successful mentoring relationships happen organically. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a formal mentorship with set parameters.” Martin is giving back not only to Las Vegas, but also on a global effort. She sits on the St. Jude Board of Directors and advises them on digital strategies as well as supports them with her social influence. She recently returned from a trip to Ethiopia with charity: water. “The trip inspired me to donate my upcoming 34th birthday to charity: water. With the help of my friends and fellow well diggers, we are trying to raise $10,000 so that a village of 250 people can have clean water. My company, Digital Royalty University, also has a Buy One, Give One Program through our partnership with Teach For America. For every class purchased, we donate a class to a teacher to help increase parent, student and teacher collaboration.” Martin will continue making a difference as a Fearless Female.

na Marie Mormando is the vice president of food and beverage at Bellagio Resort & Casino and oversees every aspect of the food and beverage department, including daily operations of Bellagio restaurants, bars and lounges, catering, and banquets. She also volunteers her time as the vice president of Epicurean Charitable Foundation, a nonprofit organization comprised of Las Vegas’ top food and beverage professionals who donate their time to awarding students scholarships to attend any accredited four-year university or trade school of their choice to study in the culinary or hospitality fields. Originally from Bogotá, the capital city of Colombia, Mormando moved to New York City during her early teenage years. While attending New York University, she changed career paths to pursue a business-focused degree and discovered the hospitality industry. “My hospitality career actually began while working part time as a hostess when I was attending NYU,” explained Mormando, “I really enjoyed the job and two months into the position, the assistant manager was promoted to general manager, and I was offered the assistant general manager position. I managed to not fully commit to the industry until I was offered a position as director of food and beverage at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. I fell in love with catering to people who enjoyed the arts, the challenge of running multiple venues and hosting numerous prestigious events. After that job, I couldn’t imagine working in a career or industry that would be more satisfying.” In 2013 and 2014, Mormando’s role in ECF is to supervise the scholarship and mentorship, fundraising, community outreach, and membership committees. As for her involvement with ECF, Mormando believes to be able to make a difference in someone’s life is the ultimate reward. “I appreciate the opportunity to help empower deserving young individuals, through the gift of an education, to follow their passion,” she said. Through the ECF, Mormando mentors several ECF students along with numerous management associates. “This is a great industry and it gives me great pride and pleasure to witness the professional growth of people who reach out to me for support or advice.” She is inspired by her mother and husband. “My mother, in spite of all the hardships that she endured, sees only the positive in every circumstance,” said Mormando, “And my husband, who also has endured some challenges, continues to motivate and support me. He is my rock and is always there to keep me grounded.” As for mentors, Mormando credits one of her elementary school teachers. “She was everyone’s favorite teacher. I attended a very progressive school that did not have a yearly curriculum; the students were encouraged to go through subjects at their own pace. I became adept at focusing on only completing the academic assignments and failed to actively interact with the other students. She took an interest in me and asked me to be her assistant. She quickly made me realize the importance of being part of a team and that being a lone player wouldn’t allow you to win the game. She completely changed me socially at an early age and I have been forever thankful.” As for entering the hospitality field, her advice is to, “Get ready to enjoy one of the most rewarding professions imaginable. Ensure that you take excellent care of your employees and colleagues, so that as a team you can offer extraordinary experiences to your guests, who will in turn become your best promoters.” As Fearless Female, Mormando continues to encourage others in their progress while setting the best example.

leading, influential figure in the world of public relations, Dawn Britt is still following her dreams as well as guiding others in fulfilling high-profile positions as directors, senior publicists, account directors and marketing managers in this highly competitive field. Britt is the founder and president of one7 communications. With years of expertise in the industry, Britt manages the overall company and oversees all client business while strategizing and developing campaigns with her team. “Launching one7 communications has been one of my proudest professional moments and it has consumed much of my life and passions preparing for this,” explained Britt, “What attracted me to this opportunity is my love for hospitality and travel and the opportunity to tell the story of so many unique resorts, restaurants and destinations up and down the west coast.” Britt most recently served as the corporate director of communications for Las Vegas Sands Corp., and was responsible for the community outreach and social responsibility initiatives for the Fortune 500 company which operates The Venetian and The Palazzo in Las Vegas, Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, Sands Bethlehem in Pennsylvania and Sands Macao, Venetian Macao and Sands Cotai Strip in Macao, China. Britt also served as the director of public relations and communications and member of executive committee at The Venetian and The Palazzo. Her inspiration is Coco Chanel. “Not simply because of the fashion sense, but the sheer determination, ambition and professionalism,” said Britt, “She was a businesswoman first and foremost and a competitive artist. She broke molds, laid the groundwork for both men and women to follow in her footsteps, she took risks and she wasn’t a people pleaser.” As for advice to other women entering the field of public relations, Britt explained, “It’s a different world today than it was for me when I began my career, but that’s not to say that there are still certain expectations for women in the workforce—be it positive or negative. They’re simple pieces of advice I give to any woman entering the workforce, regardless of the profession. I always say, never let them see you sweat and if you need to cry go outside. Be confident, no matter what. If you don’t know the answer, it’s okay, but figure it out. Lastly, I have always told my team to ‘Dress for the job you want and not the job you have.’ Ask yourself, would your boss or vice president wear that outfit? How do you want to be perceived? Let the answers to those questions reflect on what you pull from your closet.” Born in Niagara Falls, New York; raised in Pennsylvania and Maryland, Britt finally settled down in Las Vegas. “I love this city— it’s where I call home. Las Vegas is the perfect balance of urban living for me and is a mere hour-flight away from my favorite California cities where some of my clients are based.” Britt also gives back professionally and personally, including the Assistance League. “Spend a day with some of the children that come through their campus, it promises to be one of the most touching moments of your life,” she said. Her company works with Aid for AIDS of Nevada. “They have such an important role here in Southern Nevada and so many powerful and moving stories to tell. It’s been so tremendous to help tell their story,” she said. Britt’s message to others is, “If there is anything I’ve learned over the past few years is that life is too short to play it safe. The less risks you take, the more what ifs you’ll have.” It is her philosophy and passion that showcases Britt as a Fearless Female.

ina Kilmer is the vice president of product compliance for Bally Technologies, a $1 billion company and currently is one of only two women vice presidents in the gaming manufacturing industry. Before entering the gaming industry, Kilmer worked for Dow Chemical USA and Argonne National Laboratory. As lead project engineer at Dow Chemical, she provided corporate electrical engineering and consulting and design services. At Argonne National Laboratory she held many roles, including technical and management leadership for strategic planning and program management. “I moved to Las Vegas in 1999 to help my son’s respiratory problems,” explained Kilmer, “The week the doctor recommended we move to a drier climate, I received a call from a friend at Bally about a possible opportunity in the gaming industry. They were looking for someone with my experience and background to lead a project management team. I interviewed, accepted the position and began my career in the gaming industry.” Working at Bally Technologies for 10 years, Kilmer has held a variety of leadership roles in project management, engineering and product compliance. In her current role, she leads, “a remarkable team of talented individuals responsible for protecting and preserving the name, reputation, integrity and good will of Bally Technologies. We accomplish this by ensuring compliance with regulations and requirements established by gaming regulatory agencies in the nearly 300 global jurisdictions in which we operate, and providing software release engineering services for our multiple business lines,” Kilmer said. It was a professor who set Kilmer on her career path. “I was caught between becoming a physicist or engineer. I had a professor who saw that I was having difficulty making this decision. He asked the three questions: What, why and how? After responding, I realized that I enjoyed the applied aspect of science. He said (to me), ‘You have your solution. You’re definitely an engineer.’ With that, I enrolled in his electrical engineering classes and the rest is history. His interest, encouragement and guidance set me on my early career path.” She believes in the importance of mentoring and has guided several young female engineers at Bally and is active in the Society of Women Engineers. Kilmer is the mother of four children and two of her daughters are also engineers. Kilmer credits her parents and grandparents for her continued success. “I grew up in a family that had high expectations. My sisters and I had multiple responsibilities at an early age. From working at family businesses to helping build our house, we were expected to participate in nearly every job. We had to learn how to fix the car before we could drive it. We were always told we could do whatever we wanted to do, if we set our minds to it and gave it our all.” As for other women entering the field of engineering, Kilmer advises, “Hold true to your core values. Trust your intuition. Inspire and be inspired. Learn and share willingly. Understand that some of life’s biggest blessings begin as monumental challenges.” She is also passionate about supporting food banks and organizations that provide support and shelter for victims of domestic violence. In addition to collecting clothing and toiletries, she works with agencies to supply business clothing to help women who are interviewing for jobs and preparing to enter or re-enter the workforce. Kilmer also enjoys tutoring in math and science. Kilmer believes it is all about perspective. “I begin my day being thankful. My job can be very hectic so having gratitude helps me stay grounded. Life will always have its issues and challenges—be thankful and learn the lesson. And of course my husband and family constantly inspire me. My husband tries very hard to keep me grounded and reminds me to keep a sense of humor.” With her accomplishments and attitude, Kilmer is truly a Fearless Female.

Locks of Love is a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under the age of 21 in the United States and Canada suffering from hair loss. Stone was encouraged by her mother, Lara Stone, to participate in Locks of Love at age 5 when Lara Stone decided to grow out her own hair to donate. After the first donation, Allison Stone told her mother she wanted to participate again and began to grow her hair. “I think it is wonderful she has tremendous compassion,” said Lara Stone, “She understands this goes to children who are sick.” Other activities Allison Stone is involved with include tennis and dance, with an emphasis on tap dancing.

Let’s Elevate the Situation

U

ndeniably we exist on a plane of law between inhaling and exhaling. This plane of law is also why we reap what we sow. Our life (by this same law) causes a perfect reflection of our attitude, perception and belief. We live between an inner world and an outer world as each breath moves in and out. We live between an invisible cause and the visible effect of phenomenon. Therefore, the first fundamental law of Life is the law between Cause and Effect. This fundamental law is the rule determining how cause becomes effect. We cannot control everything but we can control our response to anything and how we respond to things that happen, reveals where we are in personal maturity or spiritual consciousness. We have the ability to upgrade our standard of living by choosing to elevate the situation wherever we are and in whatever we do. No matter what the situation, we have the power to direct our attention. “Energy flows where the attention goes.” Our whole life follows the attention. We cannot stop the flow of thoughts into our minds, but we can control

which thoughts get our attention, which thoughts to ignore or which thoughts to act on. It is from this same place within governing the direction of our attention that also determines our response to things that happen. This is a key to becoming enlightened. This is where you discover that love is everywhere. Why? Because you bring it with you. Therefore, happiness is not something needing to be found because happiness is what we can bring to any situation we choose. This is why, no matter what, we can elevate the situation. We can choose to turn hate into love, fear into faith, scarcity thinking into abundance consciousness, less talking into more listening, resentment into forgiveness and victim consciousness into victory consciousness. Our natural tendency in life is to want more and more. We all want more love, more fun, more money, more knowledge, more pleasure and fulfillment. We are constantly seeking the more and the better and the greater. As we elevate the situation—more love, peace and beauty is released and we immediately improve the quality of life wherever we are.

Dear Dao

Dao Vu answers your most interesting, intimate and out-there questions about love, life and everything in between

Dear Dao, I recently reconnected via Facebook with an old friend I hadn’t seen in over 20 years. He mentioned having been hurt badly due to his divorce, but said he was over her and made every effort to form a relationship with me. We started dating and things were progressing rather quickly, however, he always introduced me as his “friend.” During a conversation, I asked him what he thought we were in terms of a relationship. Then suddenly he backed off completely. I can’t make sense of it. His only explanation was that I pressured him. Do you think he really felt pressured or it this just an excuse to break it off ? From Tina J Dear Tina, When your Facebook friend, whom you knew from more than 20 years ago, says he felt pressured, you should believe him. While you may not have felt you were pressuring him, you do not know his true emotional state. Did you call him a lot or did he always call you? Who knows, calling him once a day may have been too much for him. Maybe he enjoyed the thrill of the pursuit and when you started to express feelings, it made him realize it was going in a direction he didn’t want to go. You just don’t know because he broke it off before you had a chance to discuss it. It sounds like you were still in the “get to know you again, let’s have fun together stage” and that may be all he really wanted even though he indicated otherwise. Even if it was just an excuse to end your relationship, consider yourself lucky. Better to find out now than a week before Valentine’s Day!

Walk us through a typical day in your shoes. Sore feet. Adulation. A lot of gin.

Have you ever purchased any As Seen on TV items? If you could destroy a grade-school photo of yourself, what year would it be and why? The year was 1948 and believe it or not, I dyed my hair pink.

While grocery shopping, what is your stick-in-thecart-when-no-one-is-looking item? Another bottle of Bombay Sapphire—aside from the one (or 12) already in the cart.

If we were to look through your iPod or iPhone, what is on your hit list or playlist or favorite app?

6

Do you ever play “tourist” in Vegas? If so, what is your favorite thing to do?

8

Does anyone ever mistake you for someone else, like one of your former clients? I am mistaken for my wife, who really IS the mayor of Las Vegas now.

I would not even think of it!

I love ESPN—I need to find out how much I lost on the day’s bets.

I head down to Oscar’s Beef * Booze * Broads at the Plaza and kibitz with the customers. That means I hang out and talk to people.

What do you do to unwind and relax? I enjoy sitting in my backyard by my koi pond, turning on classical music and imbibing.
