You will be pretty intelligent, pretty creative, pretty amazing, but, you will never be merely pretty.” - Katie Makkai

LETTER FROM THE

Spring is truly an inspiring time of year. I am always in awe of our majestic mountains that surround the valley and the flowers that bloom this time of year. I love the promise of a new beginning and the wonder I experience during this season. The professionals who call Las Vegas home always amaze me. The women we featured from the law firm Hutchison & Steffen are inspiring in the way they truly embody winning women. These attorneys and support staff respect both the law and their colleagues. Their cover story shows their dedication, expertise and passion for their field and how they help the Southern Nevada community. With spring, comes great wines to try and delicious coffee to savor. Many adults promise themselves they will eat healthy in a new year, but what about children? Chef Oscar Sanchez offers up yummy ways to encourage children to eat more fruits and vegetables. Trending features the must-have products including hair products, makeup and tech for the spring. Art shines in our community with our inspiring artist, who has overcome great odds to be successful. Fashions for the season are light with bursts of color to embrace the season. “What’s Beneath Your Mask” asks everyone becoming his or her authentic self in 2018. The “Bored with Me Project” is one woman’s very personal journey that resonates with so many. Are you considering traveling alone? This insightful article gives many hints as well as encourages every woman to take that solo journey. Of course, you can also just plan a staycation here in Las Vegas and relax at SpringHill Suites Las Vegas Convention Center. As always, I thank everyone for making Las Vegas Woman magazine a way to motivate, lead and celebrate all of the wonderful women (and men) in Southern Nevada. Here is to the promise of spring.

SOLO TRAVEL A Must Do For Every Woman By Meghan Bailey Imagine being on the beach with the sand beneath your toes, a drink in hand and a warm breeze blowing through your hair. Or imagine that you are walking through some of the most historic landmarks in Europe, wearing layers and searching for the perfect coffee shop. It is a daydream that most women have; the thought of not having a care and traveling the world. Only, most women don’t pursue the idea of traveling because they must travel alone. This is a mistake; going by yourself is an adventure. Sadly, in our society today when a woman proclaims that she is traveling solo, there are opinions and gasps. This sways the decision to book a flight, pack a bag and head off on an adventure that is waiting for you. One that allows for time to recharge without usual day-to-day distractions, an experience that will open your mind, views and expand your horizon. Even beyond the adventure, solo travel allows for you to learn a few life lessons that you wouldn’t be able to do otherwise. The first trip, no matter where you decide to travel, will kick you out of your comfort zone. Nothing can test your sense of survival more than being somewhere without GPS, a tour guide and, in most cases, a Starbucks. Luckily, Starbucks is everywhere, but you may find that you are going to have to put yourself out there to make sure you get to your destination. This includes talking to locals, eating foods you have never heard of before and embracing cultures that you’ve only read about in books. Being able to immerse yourself in the culture that surrounds you is a sure way to shake up your comfort zone. This applies to any travel, not just other countries, but even in the United States. Big cities, East and West coasts and all of the regions are all very different.
18
However, you have control of your route and will have to rely solely on yourself. This part of solo travel is the scariest for most women. Women don’t give themselves enough credit. They don’t feel that they have what it takes to travel alone. Repeat after me: “I am strong.” “I can do this.” “I will do this.” Traveling solo allows for you to take time for the things that are important to you without being flexible to someone else’s needs. You get the opportunity to rely on your intuition, be spontaneous and realize that you are the sole holder of the reality around you. You get to make your own choices. The highlight of traveling solo is the confidence you’ll gain and the ability to enjoy your own company. Being alone gives you time to connect with your self spiritually. As you travel, you must make decisions. Will you eat brunch or lunch? Will you hike or take a spa day? Will you eat two desserts or just one? Train or plane? Each one of these decisions grows your confidence, which is a valuable skill that will help you become stronger and more self-aware of your strength. A few of the best places to travel solo: Zurich, Switzerland Rome, Italy New York City, New York Montreal, Canada South Island, New Zealand Kyoto, Japan Laguna Beach, California As you travel, remember to stay safe by walking in tourist areas, don’t play on your cell phone when walking from place to place, never lose sight of your drink, don’t trust people too quickly and blend into your surroundings.
Bon voyage ladies!

SUIT DRIVE
helping women build new lives
For women leaving unsafe homes, it’s nearly impossible to imagine everything you will need for the future. When Joanna arrived at a local women’s shelter, she had nothing but the clothes she was wearing. “The leaving was very abrupt,” Joanna said. “As part of my leaving, I had to leave everything behind.” That included any clothes she may have worn to job interviews or work. This situation is all too familiar for women across Southern Nevada, especially as they complete back-to-work programs and prepare to re-enter the workforce. The United Way of Southern Nevada’s Women’s Leadership Council is filling this important need through the annual Women’s Fall Suit Drive. Held each year on the first Friday of November, the Suit Drive collects thousands of professional items for women like Joanna receiving training and resources through agencies that help women find jobs and start on the path to a career. Suits, dresses, pants, tops and accessories are needed as WLC members and volunteers create outfits to distribute to eight local organizations assisting women. “It’s amazing to see the impact the Suit Drive has created in the community over the past 10 years and how many thousands of lives have been changed,” said Holly Lloyd, chair of the volunteerism committee. “Our Suit Drive is an incredible example of how our members rally the support of the entire community for those who need it most.” In celebration of United Way’s 60th anniversary, over 60 volunteers and donors came together in 2017 to collect professional clothing and build outfits for women in back-to-work programs at Catholic Charities, Goodwill Career Connections, S.A.F.E. House, SafeNest, The Shade Tree, Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority ROSS Program, Women’s Development Center and the Work Opportunities Readiness Center of HELP of Southern Nevada. At the end of the day, over 10,000 items had been collected and matched into a record 1,694 outfits for women across the valley. The Suit Drive is a one-day event to give back to the community, but it is one of the many programs United Way of Southern Nevada supports as part of its Community-Based Agenda, helping children and families from cradle-to-career. One main focus area of the Community-Based Agenda is workforce support, as United Way aims to increase the number of adults working full- or part-time in Clark County. By providing the necessary support for these adults, they can create a stable home life for their families and begin to build pathways out of poverty and into future success. Joanna saw the effect this support had on her life shortly after getting help. After arriving at the shelter, she was applying for jobs and going to interviews wearing her new outfit from the Suit Drive, enjoying a new outlook on life. “It inspires me and motivates me,” she said. “It’s not just clothes ... it feels like people care.”

Bored of me
PROJECT The Beginning By Meghan Bailey Photo by C. Elyse Photos
It was a moment I never thought would happen. Actually, it was a moment I strived to never have to encounter, but that is precisely what happened in 2017. I woke up, washed my face and, as I dabbed it dry, I saw a person staring back at me that I didn’t recognize anymore. I saw someone who I was utterly bored with, someone whose life was on autopilot and who didn’t have a spark for life anymore. That someone was me. The wake-up call broke me down to tears. How had I let myself become so complacent that I now felt bored of who I am? All of my life I have been the person who embraced change. I not only embraced it, but I sought it out. I loved the thrill of jumping without knowing where I’d land so much so that when I moved to Las Vegas in 2005 at age 19 with no money, no place to live and no job, I guaranteed the person looking back at me in that mirror that I would make something of myself. Everything I was hoping to achieve when I moved to Nevada and whom I wanted to be really kicked off for me in 2011. I started a job that would eventually become the coolest career, I was married and expecting a son. I climbed the corporate ladder, became a mother and continued on the same path for years. Inadvertently, I also started an auto-pilot life without even realizing it. Now, as we begin 2018, I couldn’t stop thinking about the woman looking back at me in the mirror and the feeling of being so bored of who I became, a comfortable and complacent woman. I wasn’t taking a risk, and I wasn’t doing what I loved, I wasn’t true to myself. Then it hit me. I have to work on myself as an individual again. I have to figure out who I am, because, yes, I am a mother and, yes, I am a career woman, but take those out and I can’t find that 19-year-old who jumped and lived. I have to jump out of autopilot and take the proverbial reins. That is how this project was born. The Bored of Me Project is all about kicking complacency to the curb and growing again. It’s been a long time coming. This project has three primary goals. 1. Find passion again 2. Give into what I love 3. Be brave To achieve those goals, I am going to start listening to my instincts each day. Do you ever get the feeling to get up and dance, but then you pause and decide it isn’t the time or place? That feeling is your inner self telling you to live. When you get the urge to achieve, do and be; it is time to act. Is it scary? Yes, but I know it will be worth it.

ENRICHING
Southern Nevada
Darlene Miller, along with her husband, Cliff, Darlene Miller owns MJ Christensen Diamonds and is proud to continue its 78 years of honesty, integrity, craftsmanship, customer service and relationship building. She has a genuine love for Las Vegas, her home since 2000, and has given extensively of her time and talents as well as donated financially. Darlene is proud to have made volunteering a family affair involving her husband and children in service to Southern Nevada.
The first charity Darlene became involved with was Opportunity Village. After being introduced to its clients, families and team members, “we fell in love with the organization,” she said. “I originally got involved because at the time the women were called the It Girls because we get it—the mental, intellectual and physical disabilities that can happen to anyone, whether a person is born that way, or something happens due to an accident or illness.” Darlene’s children were in middle school at the time and they participated in many events for Opportunity Village. “I was able to introduce my children to people with disabilities so they would learn to feel comfortable and understand them. This was a wonderful experience for both the clients and the volunteers.” As a result of this early experience, Darlene’s daughter demonstrated kindness and caring toward someone who was different. While attending junior high, her daughter attended a close friend’s house for a party. Darlene’s daughter discovered that her friend’s sister was developmentally challenged. The other kids didn’t know how to act around this person so they didn’t make eye contact or talk to her. Darlene’s daughter, because of her volunteer time at Opportunity Village, introduced herself to the friend’s sister and talked to her. The sister shined and Darlene is thrilled that this is just one lesson passed on through her community service. While continuing to volunteer at Opportunity Village, Darlene and her husband have reached out to other organizations devoted to helping physically and mentally challenged children. She is on the advisory council for Best Buddies, working to establish one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She also is on the advisory council for Assistance League after working with them in the past. Darlene participates in the Women’s Leadership Council of the United Way of Southern Nevada. Recently, she also started to volunteer for the St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital and is working on the spring fashion show. Her motivation to help the children of Southern Nevada comes from a big scare with her daughter when Darlene and Cliff first moved to Las Vegas. A lump was found under her daughter’s arm and the original diagnosis was cancer. It was determined later that it was not cancerous, but Darlene and Cliff understood what parents experience with any devastating news about their children. They both wanted to pay it forward and help others who might not have the same good news. Darlene admits she wishes she had more time to help more, which is her generous and loving nature. “I am amazed at what a giving community is in Las Vegas. I know this because I have served on many committees and met many amazing people as well as the people who attend the events and the clients that are served. Cliff and I love Las Vegas, we never want to leave and this city has been very good to us. We always want to give back to our community in any way we can.” This is the heart and soul of Darlene Miller.

Nancy Stillwell
Nancy Stillwell:
CREATING JOY
and fun through art
By Debbie Hall Art has reached out to Nancy Stillwell over the years and at this stage of her life, she has been able to share her talent. Along with her creative endeavors, Stillwell is a busy wife and loving daughter who also cares for her 91-year-old mother. The first time Stillwell remembers creative stirrings was through the influence of her father. During the holidays, he would take down the large mirror that hung in their living room. After blending his own colors, her father would paint a Christmas scene on the mirror, using a Christmas card as his guide. “When I was in junior high, I showed an interest in art and loved it,” she said. “My parents actually invested in a correspondence course in art for me.” But life took over and while her background was in fashion retailing, it was in her late 20s when Stillwell decided to pursue her artistic endeavors. Stillwell realized that her passion was art and wanted to develop it further. She came up with a solution to operate her own cleaning business so that she could set her own hours and devote more time to creating her artwork. Over the years, Stillwell would take classes, draw and paint in various mediums but still found it difficult to put her entire self into it. “I considered art more of a leisure thing and I always wanted to get my work done first before I focused on art. But let’s face it, when is work ever really done?” she admitted. Ironically, it was when she and her husband lived in the small town of Tonopah, Nevada that Stillwell could really follow her passion. At first, Stillwell was discouraged but realized it was the history of her surroundings that inspired her
and her art flourished. Stillwell also discovered that she loved to teach art as well. “It is an evolving process but my art has really changed. I was started in realism in oils but that was actually stressful. I changed to abstract with design and color and was having fun,” she stated. “I express myself with intuition and I now play with art. It is therapy and good for my health.” She has created her own medium which Stillwell calls “scribble art.” She takes a piece of very white paper and black permanent maker and scribbles. Stillwell then looks at the paper in different angles and uses watercolor markers and fills in the shapes. “It taps into my intuitive process. This is a wonderful way to become creative using scribbles.” As well as dealing with other health issues, another obstacle occurred when Stillwell was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease five years ago. Because of this, she also experienced freedom when Stillwell’s spiritual life changed and she embraces love and not perfection or rigid perceptions. While her health affects her daily life, as Stillwell stated, “I love art so much and it does so much for me, that I will always find a way to express myself.” Stillwell displays her art in various businesses in Pahrump and is a part of the Southern Nevada art community. She loves creating art whether alone or with other people and Stillwell encourages others to find their own creativity. Stillwell is a member of Friends of Parkinson’s, a nonprofit organization that connects and supports the Parkinson’s disease community. GETTING BACK TO BASICS: WHY A
FINANCIAL GAME PLAN
is so important
By James Lutz Many of us are familiar with the expression, “failing to plan is planning to fail.” As an Agent with New York Life, I can assure you that—when it comes to financial goals and objectives—this old adage still rings true. In fact, it may be more relevant than ever. It isn’t always easy for some Americans to make financial headway. With pensions in decline and interest rates only just starting to inch up near historic lows, it usually takes persistence and sound planning in order to get ahead. Not sure how to begin? That’s okay—it’s easy to become overwhelmed if you think about all your needs at once. Instead, try taking it one step at a time, starting with the basics: Build an emergency fund—No matter where you are in life, it’s important to set aside 8-10 months of living expenses. You don’t have to do it all at once, but every dollar you save today is a dollar you won’t have to borrow if something unexpected happens. Protect your home and family—Most of us have people who depend on us to keep a roof over their heads and food on their plates. That’s a big responsibility, but it’s one life insurance can help you meet—even if something tragic takes you away. You can start with an affordable term life plan at first, and then add more coverage as your needs and budget grow. Prepare for major expenses like college—As a parent or grandparent, you naturally want the best for your loved ones. Now’s the time to start a college or wedding fund so they won’t have to go into debt to make their dreams for the future come true. Get ready for retirement—There are plenty of ways to set aside money for retirement: 401(k)s, IRAs, and fixed deferred annuities* just to name a few. But they all have one thing in common—the sooner you start, the better off you’ll be in the long run. Try to increase your contributions over time—perhaps 1 percent with each raise—or, if you are age 50 or older, look into some of the ‘catch-up’ provisions that may allow you to contribute even more. While the economy is starting to grow, it still makes sense to stay focused on the things that really matter. A sound financial game plan can help us accomplish many things—but perhaps the most important is making sure we never lose sight of them again.

Fleur de Mer Rosé
Prophecy Pinot Noir
Playtime Red Here is a fun, playful red that evokes the essence of spring. The sustainably farmed grapes come from the ultra-premium vineyards of Lake County California. The blend consists of zinfandel with lesser amounts of Barbera, Petite Sirah, and Grenache. Aromas of dark cherries and plum are followed by flavors of blackberry pie, vanilla and spicy oak. Playtime Red is medium-bodied with plenty of ripe fruit and a long, smooth finish. Pair with baby back ribs, bacon cheeseburgers, pizza and pulled pork sandwiches.
This is a light, fruity and very approachable pinot noir with ripe berry flavors and a silky texture. Subtle earthy notes and a hint of vanilla complement layers of red raspberry, cherry cola and toasted oak. Prophecy Pinot Noir is perfect for picnics, patio dining, barbeques and any other occasion. Experience simplicity at its best!
Locations Corse (Corsican white wine) This unique gem is made from 100 percent Vermentino. Most people may not be familiar with this grape; however, it can produce high quality wines that over deliver for the price. Locations Corse is a prime example revealing intense floral aromas and flavors of pear, Meyer lemon, pink grapefruit and almond. Vermentino is similar in style to a Sauvignon Blanc, yet it tends to have a creamier mouth-feel. Pair with seafood, fish tacos, grilled chicken, hummus, garlic mashed potatoes and roasted vegetables.
wines & dines
The Cotes de Provence is known for its rolling hills, lavender fields, sun washed villages and exceptional rosé. Fleur de Mer (meaning flower of the sea) is an elegant rosé with aromas and flavors of fresh berries, citrus, watermelon and hints of lavender. This refreshing wine is the perfect “spring sipper” and it pairs extremely well with food.
Relax Bubbles Celebrate spring with this invigorating sparkling wine. Any traces of the winter blues will surely disappear after one sip of tropical fruit aromas leading into zesty flavors of citrus, sweet pineapple and apricot preserves. Relax Bubbles is lively and balanced with a soft mineral note on the finish. Enjoy with mild cheese, fruit, salads and seafood.

eating healthy. Simple, no-cook recipes like frozen yogurt popsicles or fruit parfaits are an excellent way to get young chefs interested in healthy cooking and eating.
Make sure to be prepared with nutritious snacks whether driving the carpool or going to soccer practice. Good choices include sliced apples, carrot sticks, whole grain crackers, light popcorn, raisins and water. Like adults, kids want to have it their way. But no parent wants to be a short order cook, making different meals for different family members. Instead, try the fixings bar approach. Offer a suitable base meal like rice and beans, whole-wheat tortillas or lean ground taco meat. Then let kids (and adults) dress it up with chopped tomatoes, lettuce, cabbage, cheese, salsa, jicama, parsley, peppers and other toppings. Also try a pasta bar with a variety of healthy sauces.

If the kitchen is exclusively filled with healthy treats, children will eat them. As children grow, stock good snacks in cabinets and shelves that they can reach without the help of an adult.
RESTAURANTS |
Teach kids the source of food. Rather than limiting the family to the weekly supermarket run, take the family to a local farmer’s market or to the farm itself and meet the people who grow the food. Picking berries from a vine can help nurture a lifelong love of good eating and environmental stewardship. Visiting a dairy farm can teach children where their milk comes from (and why everyone should care about what goes in it). Planting tomatoes and melons in the garden may tempt a child to try the fruits of his or her labor.
Kids like choices at snack time too, so consider packing an insulated lunch bag full of good snacks so they can make their own smart choices.
HEALTHY EATING
Remember that a child doesn’t have to just eat five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. She or he can also drink them. Smoothies and mixed fruit drinks like watermelon smoothie and mango lassi can be a fun way to introduce new fruits.
By Chef Oscar Sanchez
Studies show that most children need multiple exposures to try new foods. Offering a child the same fruit or vegetable five nights in a row is not the way. Just don’t give up the first time a child rejects something.
and kids
When was the last time anyone heard of a child sitting down at the dinner table and saying, “Gee, thanks for this delicious plate of healthy food! Can I have seconds?” These tips will help to make good food choices more attractive for children. Children can help to plan meals, go grocery shopping and prepare food. They will become invested in the process and more likely to eat what they select and prepare. Even toddlers too young to make grocery lists can help make choices (pears or nectarines) as a beginning to
A recent study found that young children’s food tastes are significantly related to foods that their mothers liked and disliked. When a child hears an adult order a fresh salad rather a burger and fries at the drive-through, this may encourage him or her to do the same in the future.
Spring is a great season for many fresh fruits and vegetables. Share it with children for healthy choices. Executive Chef Oscar Sanchez owns and operates Oscar Catering. For more information, call 702.426.1330 or visit OscarCateringLV.com.

BONJOUR BAKERY AND DELI With Las Vegas being the one of the top destinations for international visitors, it is fitting that two global citizens bring world cuisine to their restaurants. Bonjour Bakery and Deli was originally Bonjour Euro Bakery featuring authentic French delights for almost three decades. After a number of owners, Kristin Forsberg bought it and has added breakfast and lunch items to delectable pastries combining American, French and Korean cuisines. Menu choices also include vegan, organic and all natural foods as well as organic coffees and teas. While she had no background in the restaurant industry, Forsberg was ready to take on a new challenge and make a dramatic change in her life. Her staff is all female with a French pastry chef and a Midwest baker. “I take such pride in everything we serve,” she said. “I love working with my chef and baker and together we create magic. Women rock!” Her own backstory showcases her passion for life. Forsberg started life in South Korea as an orphan. She was adopted by Swedish parents at the age of 3 and was raised in Sweden. Educated in computer sciences, Forsberg explored the world until a major Las Vegas Strip resort recruited her 10 years ago. Along with her Swedish husband, they took the plunge and now call Southern Nevada home. Atmosphere is just as important to Forsberg who makes certain to greet customers when she is the shop, making them her friend. The décor is a sidewalk café with a mix of music from around the world playing in the background. Forsberg is thrilled to continue the tradition of Bonjour Bakery with her own influences. INNOVATIVE UMBILICAL STEM CELL THERAPY BRINGS PATIENTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD BY DR. MICHAEL S. MALL
Michael S. Mall, M.D., medical director of Michael S. Mall, MD | Medical Concierge and New Image Advanced Laser Skin Center, now offers the cutting edge treatment of umbilical stem cell therapy. This advanced procedure using umbilical cord derived stem cells has been demonstrated to be the most potent type of stem cells in terms of regenerating human cells. These are not PRP stem cells from a patient’s blood, which matches their age. These are new stem cells that are zero days old. People suffering from over 100 different conditions including lupus, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, traumatic brain injuries, neuropathies, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, dementia and stroke injury have discovered this amazing treatment and are coming to physicians such as Dr. Mall. It is important to state that these stem cells do not come from any embryonic tissue from unborn fetuses but instead they do come from the umbilical cords, not paid for, after passing the FDA tissue bank screening form, and are the only FDAapproved stem cell product. Although the umbilical cord stem cell product is FDA approved, they are not specifically FDA approved for any specific indication. There are well over 200,000 studies documenting the benefits of stem cell therapy for a variety of medical diseases and over 20,000 studies specifically studying umbilical cord stem cells. Doctors can administer umbilical cord stem cells to patients that have conditions being studied with umbilical cord cells but not make claims of treating that particular condition with stem cells to be FDA compliant.
With Las Vegas as a medical destination, Michael S. Mall, MD | Medical Concierge is on the forefront with umbilical stem cell therapy, offering this to his global patients. Umbilical cord derived stem cells are easy to administer and are zero years old. How do they work? The umbilical cord stem cells once introduced into the body through an IV are drawn to areas of damage, injury, inflammation and degeneration by signals given off from those damaged and inflamed tissues. The stem cells set up immunomodulary centers wherever there is damaged tissue in order to recruit cells to repair damage, as well as produce anti-inflammatory and healing peptides and proteins to help in the regeneration of tissue. Approximately 20 million live umbilical cord stem cells are introduced through an IV, and those cells continue to double every 28 hours to a maximum of sixty-five times producing approximately 600 septillion cells that secrete healing immunomodulary proteins and incorporate themselves into the regenerating tissue. Since these umbilical cord stem cells cross the blood brain barrier, they can regenerate brain and nerve tissues. These umbilical cord cells also regenerate cartilage, bone, connective tissue, muscle, organ tissue and skin. The full effects of regenerating damaged and inflamed tissues can take up to six months to accomplish. Now there is a way to regenerate any degenerated tissue in the body whether from trauma, aging, or disease processes with a simple IV infusion of umbilical cord stem cells. WOMEN’S HEALTH FAQs By Dr. Michael S. Mall
Michael S. Mall, M.D. is the medical director of Michael S. Mall, MD | Medical Concierge and New Image Advanced Laser Skin Center. Dr. Mall answers some common questions about health, but encourages those with concerns to seek professional help. Q: I always want to look my best at any age but I am wondering if there is anything I can do now so that maybe I won’t need plastic surgery as I get older.
50
A: It is important to realize that the collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid concentrations decrease making our skin appear thinner and more transparent. Plastic surgery makes skin appear smoother by stretching the loose skin tighter but further decreasing the concentration of collagen, elastin and HA, and actually thinning the skin. The latest treatment to address all three of those elements is Profound, which actually heats the reticular layer of the skin below the surface with micro fine needles for three seconds. The procedure only requires topical and local anesthetic with swelling for three to seven days as a recovery phase with no bruising. Profound is currently the only procedure to actually increase elastin (by 18 percent), increase collagen as well as hyaluronic acid. The lift is about 37 percent of that obtained by a surgical face lift. The procedure can be repeated every five years to maintain the skin at a youthful biological age, avoiding plastic surgery altogether.
Q: I work out and take good care of myself but I still have cellulite. Help! What can I do? A: Cellulite is the age-old enemy of women’s legs. Profound has been FDA cleared for cellulite reduction with a hand piece dedicated to fat reduction. However, sometimes what appear to look like cellulite as dimply skin is not actually cellulite, but moderately loose skin. Profound can actually tighten loose skin anywhere on the body including arms, buttocks, thighs, legs and love handles. Q: How do I know what skin care treatment is right for me? A: A good aesthetician can evaluate your skin taking into account biological age, laxity, sun damage, lines, age spots and genetic predisposition to determine the best customized treatment plan with the appropriate prescription grade skin care products including Skinceuticals and Skin Better, a unique newer prescription grade skin care product line. Q: Does skin treatments really help those in their 20s and 30s? A: The earlier you start properly caring for your skin the better the outcome in skin care treatments. Prevention of sun damage and environmental damage is the best way to preserve youthful skin. Correcting already present damage to restore youthfulness is the next step, and can start as early as in the 20’s. The most important point is to work with an aesthetician that specializes in advanced skin treatments from skin care products to full resurfacing lasers in order to determine best individualized life long treatment plan.
Michael S. Mall, MD | Medical Concierge and New Image Advanced Laser Skin Center offers a new approach to health care, especially for women and their unique needs. Dr. Mall and his team adhere the highest medical standards and utilize the most advanced technology. For more information, visit drmallmd.com and newimagelasvegas.com.

a critical moment for
WOMEN and MEN By Dr. Tiger Devore
Women everywhere, and conscientious men, are realizing just how long the unfairness of women’s place in society has gone unchecked. Suddenly there is a movement to recognize and correct what has been just “boys being boys.” Women are now raising their voices in mutual support of one another. As a result, men are toppling from the very positions of power that once conferred upon them the belief that they had the privilege to mistreat women and expect to get away with it. This isn’t just about oppression from inappropriate sexualization. It’s clear that the rules of how men treat women around sexuality and sexual interest are changing very quickly. Toleration of inappropriate touch, oppression by sexual innuendo, differentials in hiring and promoting, even gender-based wage differences could all become a shame of our collective past. So why has this behavior on the part of men and women been accepted for so long? #MeToo makes it very clear that most women have a story where a man in their life has subjugated them. It’s not as if its just one kind of man or one kind of woman; men from every corner of society have been guilty of thinking of women in a stereotypical way that has allowed them to feel falsely superior, even if they spoke publicly to the contrary. Is it instinct? Our ape relatives make it very clear that males enjoy superior status in every aspect of the troop life, and that males fight for supremacy and access to females for mating. Is it genetic? Maybe. The genetic difference between men and women allows for testosterone to be the dominant hormone in males, and many theorists believe this fact might have the answers. Since the 1950s, when people born into female bodies choose to live as males, the effect that the testosterone has on them is instructive; they do become more focused, dominant, aggressive, territorial, confident and a bit different emotionally. Since the socialization is different, trans men are (usually) not at risk for being abusive to women. Is it how men are raised and the mythology of our culture? Is it the sexualization of females to make them into objects and property instead of people? All that is true too, and we must get busy changing how we represent women to girls, boys and men. We need to teach respect and equality for women throughout our culture and must make unacceptable all the traditions that allow for women to be second-class citizens in our times. We have a chance to make this happen in 2018, but women, and the men who respect them, have to keep this fight up while this issue is so much in the news.

HUTCHISON STEFFEN: STRONG, WINNING WOMEN
of the
LEGAL FIELD
T
he legal landscape can be filled with landmines, but the attorneys of Hutchison & Steffen have shown experience, compassion and expertise for their clients. Founded in 1996 by Mark A. Hutchison and John T. Steffen, the AV-rated, full-service law firm has continued its reputation of achieving outstanding results. Patricia Lee was the first woman to be hired at the firm and is now a partner practicing primarily in business and commercial litigation. Her career path started when she obtained a dual degree in psychology and communications from the University of Southern California with a desire to work in the media. Lee was part of the California Science Center in Los Angeles and assisted in the establishment of the Rosa Parks Community Computer and Learning Center for inner city youth. Then Lee changed paths and entered George Washington University Law School, with plans to become a children’s advocacy attorney. After graduation, she focused on commercial litigation with pro-bono work as a children’s advocate. “This was my first interview out of law school,” Lee explained. “I have worked here ever since.” “The entire culture of our firm is to do the best for our clients and achieve the results they want,” she explained. “I want to protect the little guy from being bullied by big firms with big legal departments. I believe in small business owners, especially since my husband is a small business owner. They are the backbone of our community.”
Christina Alexander is a partner with the firm who practices primarily as counsel for medical providers in defense of claims of malpractice. As an attorney for medical and dental providers, Alexander works on behalf of doctors, dentists, physicianassistants, nurses and their related medical practices in all areas of law involving patient care. This includes not only claims made regarding treatment by a patient, but also matters before licensing boards, as well as the general operation of medical and dental practices. Alexander admits that she was inspired to enter the field of law after seeing a blue Mercedes. “When I was 12 years old, I saw what I thought was the most beautiful car in my life. An attorney owned the car and I knew what I wanted to do.” As she grew up, Alexander realized she truly loved the law and pursued her career. She became interested in her area of expertise to help assertive and aggressive personalities. “I believe the misunderstanding that people have is that while they know bad things can happen, they don’t really think it can happen to them. When something happens, they want to blame someone. But then it doesn’t mean the doctors did anything wrong. I am here to bridge that gap and give clarity and closure to the situation. In her experience, Southern Nevada offers a great quality of heath care and physicians and their staff work very hard. “These people are dedicated. It is humbling to me how much they care.”

working here and my progress is based on my capabilities.”
According to Alexander, Southern Nevada is a smaller jurisdiction where the attorneys know each other and everyone is more polite and respectful. Alexander is licensed to practice law in the states of California and Nevada, as well as in the District of Columbia.
As an Of Counsel member of the firm, Kimberly Marsh Guinasso focuses primarily on government affairs. A native Nevadan, she was drawn to practicing law using her talents of logical thinking and communication.
“Having practiced in other locations, Hutchison & Steffen is a very family-oriented firm starting with the top. John Steffen is a wonderful person and Mark Hutchison is amazing. It is a wonderful place to work and practice law.” Shannon Wilson is a partner with the firm, practicing in its litigation department, focusing on family law. Originally from Maine, Wilson obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Southern Maine, then graduated magna cum laude with a Juris Doctorate degree from the Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego. She worked for several years in the political arena before entering law school in her 30s. Planning to practice in environmental law, specifically laws pertaining to water. She met her significant other, who is a scientist with the U.S. Department of Energy, and they moved to Las Vegas. “While I expected opportunities in water laws in Las Vegas, the demand was not there. I landed at Hutchison & Steffen. I didn’t know anyone in Las Vegas and, at the time, Patty [Lee] was not yet a partner. However, I was never made to feel that my gender was an issue. I was an attorney
Hutchison & Steffen embodies and demonstrates the philosophy of passionate and experienced attorneys who are strong women.
“My field is extremely interesting. I have the opportunity to be informed about many issues. The political aspect makes it exciting,” she said and added that even with the ups-and-downs of politics, the type of work in this field does not change. Marsh Guinasso received her law degree from Duke University School of Law in Durham, North Carolina and her Bachelor of Arts degree from Pepperdine University. Sandra Robertson is an associate practicing primarily in the area of real estate law. Originally from Chicago, Robertson graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and attended DePaul University College of Law and obtained her Juris Doctorate. She also studied international law at University College Dublin, in Dublin, Ireland. Robertson began her career at a large, litigation-based firm in Las Vegas in the 1990s, took an extended leave from the practice of law to travel around the world, and then to raise her two children. Returning to the practice of law in 2016, she realized the need for expertise in real estate.
57
“I am a single mom and so busy but I have been so fortunate to be home with my children. When I returned to practicing law, I wanted to set an example for my kids, especially my daughter. She can do anything she wants to do. She can do it all or not, it is up to her. I can contribute as a lawyer and I am empowered, which empowers my daughter,” she explained. Angela Wall joined Hutchison & Steffen as an associate in September 2016 and is working with the public defenders for city of North Las Vegas in municipal court. “I am helping people who can’t afford representation. Even with lower level crimes, there can be serious consequences without proper representation. It gives me great satisfaction to help.” Wall received her degrees from the University of Utah, majoring in history and English literature with a creative writing emphasis while graduating summa cum laude and valedictorian of both classes. After working for two years as a paralegal with Hutchison & Steffen, Wall earned her Juris Doctorate from the S.J. Quinney College of Law, University of Utah in the top 20 percent of the class. Her father also works for the firm and Wall enjoys all aspects of her legal career. Traci Cassity is an associate of the firm’s litigation department providing research for complex litigation trials. Cassity completed her undergraduate studies at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, receiving her Bachelor of Science in sociology with a minor in mathematics. She earned her Juris Doctorate degree from J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University. “After law school, I enjoyed a few years as a full-time litigator, working primarily in complex litigation and medical malpractice matters. Eventually, I started a family, and chose to
stay home with my children. I am now a mother of four, who keep me very busy,” she said. “When I decided to make the lifestyle adjustment with my career, Hutchison & Steffen made it possible for me to work part-time from home. I give this firm significant credit for being so forward thinking and standing behind women, who often face this type of challenge in their pursuit towards that elusive work/life balance. I currently work on many of the same types of cases as I did working full-time, but am able to accomplish those tasks while managing a busy household.” Cynthia Milanowski is an associate attorney of the firm and practices primarily general litigation with an emphasis on construction defects. Originally from California, she graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree and obtained her Juris Doctorate from Loyola Law School, Los Angeles. Coming from a family of attorneys, she knew she would enter the field of law. Milanowski enjoys being a litigator in a courtroom. As for her field of expertise, she saw a need and filled it. “I have the confidence to perform in this field and I have two daughters. My career has helped them to understand that they can do whatever they want to do in whatever profession they choose,” she stated. Jennifer M.K. Willis is an associate with the firm practicing in trust and probate administration and litigation. Originally from California, she graduated magna cum laude from the University of Utah with dual Bachelor of Science degrees in political science and speech communications. She received her Juris Doctorate from Boston College Law School.
“I AM EMPOWERED, WHICH

MY DAUGHTER”
“I always planned on becoming a lawyer. I like the idea of justice and working everything out fairly. I believe this is possible,” she explained. Willis gravitated to the practice of trust and probate and believes women bring a voice to the legal profession that might not be heard otherwise. “We have a way of analyzing and thinking about problems that help to improve the community.” She is also the mother of two young daughters and is grateful to set an example for them.
obtained my paralegal certificate and national certification. I have a sincere respect for the law and all of my work has been done in civil law,” she said. “I feel truly honored to be a part of this team. This is a unique law firm with knowledgeable attorneys and support staff.”
But along with the attorneys, the legal support staff is also an integral part of the firm.
“I deal with the financial aspects including benefits, payroll and receivables.” The firm had developed a deep sense of teamwork and respect for everyone and Vinante is proud to be part of a respected and progressive legal firm.
Teresa Tokumon-Phillips is the office manager and has been with the firm for 17 years. She supervises the non-attorney staff that is not part of the admin department. She also works with CIM Marketing Partners; the firm’s outsourced marketing partner. She managed the legal office of her exhusband and then came to work for Hutchison & Steffen. “I wanted to learn everything I could about the legal field and
Janet Vinante, firm administrator, started her career as Lt. Governor Hutchison’s legal secretary before he began the firm. It was the three of them when the firm was created.
Hutchison & Steffen is a diverse workplace, which reflects a broad range of socioeconomic, racial, ethnic and personal backgrounds. The women on its staff all showcase their personal dedication and philosophy for creating the best outcomes for their clients and the community as a whole. For more information, visit hutchlegal.com.

Drop the
MASK BECOME YOUR AUTHENTIC SELF By Tonya Twitchell
In the winter 2017-18 issue of Las Vegas Woman magazine, I invited you to consider—and choose—who you want to be in 2018. Specifically, I asked you to consider the words you most want people to say about who you are as a person and leader, and to think about what it would look like for you to become a true and committed champion of yourself. As you think back on the past few months, how successful have you been at championing yourself and your possibilities? How willing have you been to rewrite or retire the stories you had previously told about who you are and about what is possible for you in your life? What do you say to and about yourself when you look in the mirror first thing each morning? What are the words that go through your mind as you lay your head on your pillow each night? I now challenge you to notice and observe the conversations you are having with yourself. Pay attention to the words you say, how quickly and automatically you say them and the degree to which they support or diminish your potential and possibilities. Consider how you might reword and step forward from these moments. Consider how you could respond in a way that empowers and champions who you are and who you want to become. Pay attention also to the armor or masks you may unconsciously or inadvertently be wearing. Where did these masks come from and how do they make you feel when they are on? Do these masks and armor serve you? Are they necessary and empowering and in alignment with who you most want to be and become? What would it look and feel like for you to set these masks aside and allow yourself and others to really see you? What does it cost you and others when you do not show up as the most empowered, authentic you in your life? As you continue stepping forward toward your legacy, I challenge you to champion the you that lives beneath your mask. Welcome and invite yourself to step forward boldly, courageously and with confidence and certainty. Honor your intrinsic greatness by listening to and for the words and ideas that you must share with yourself. Champion yourself fiercely and unapologetically in those moments when limiting beliefs, words and habits threaten to derail you from your course. Most of all, remember that championing one another, our individual and collective possibilities and ourselves is a journey. Know that you will have moments when you succeed as well as many moments when you fail. Be willing to allow each moment to be a new moment. Be willing to set down your masks, assumptions and fears. Know that if you keep moving toward your legacy, you can and will eventually get there. Set your sights on your possibilities and be willing to continually get up, dust yourself off and restart.

Deon Blaney with her new Jaguar XJL sedan
Sleek and stylish-
OH theYEAH, cars are awesome too!
When a Jaguar such as F-PACE, XJL or XF is driven down a road, people notice the stylish automobiles and the women driving them. It is obvious that these proud owners are confident professionals who appreciate the value of a Jaguar. Jackie Valiente test drove a number of other cars before selecting her Jaguar XF. “The other cars didn’t drive as smoothly and the trunk wasn’t big enough in some of them. This Jaguar is perfect for me for both my career in real estate and my family.” She didn’t want an SUV but still needed the room and this model offers what she needs. Jackie is appreciative of Jaguar Land Rover Las Vegas dealership and how well the service department takes care of her automobile. “This is my third Jaguar and I just love it.” The Jaguar XF combines design, dynamics and refinement to create a car that offers both excitement and comfort while enhanced with the latest technologies. A first-time owner of a Jaguar F-Pace, Michelle Jorgenson works in real estate in Cedar City, Utah and found the car to be perfect with clients. Her Jaguar gets excellent gas mileage

with its diesel engine and performs well in the mountain community. Since she has to commute to the dealership, they work with her schedule and makes certain that everything is covered. Another first-time owner of the Jaguar F-Pace, Rachel Oostman selected this particular model because, “I love the new Jaguar models. This is a perfect mix of a sporty and luxury vehicle. I just love the design of the car and the features it offers.” She enjoys driving the car because she feels it is not a pretentious vehicle but a fun, fast and sleek car she is proud to own. People tell Rachel when she is driving how they admire her car and she loves the attention. “Let’s face it, Las Vegas is a car city, and this is a great car that combines a classic look with an upscale, sleek design.” As a regional salesperson for the Midwest and west regions for Prop & Peller Pretzels Company, Rachel travels in her car quite a bit. She is so appreciative of the sales and service from the dealership. “We can just text them and someone responds immediately. I feel like we are friends.” Switching from a Mercedes Benz, Linda Day
just fell in love with her Jaguar F-Pace SUV. “It is so comfortable. The seating just wraps around you, the drive is so smooth and responds so well.” She is amazed at the features the car offers including alerting her to take a break or apply more pressure to the wheel. Its style is so captivating that Linda has had people stop her when she parks the car and admire her Jaguar. The dealership takes great care of her and she is very comfortable with both the sales and service department. The Jaguar F-Pace is the first Jaguar luxury performance SUV to bring together sporty handling and dramatic beauty with everyday practicality and efficiency. The Jaguar F-Pace is dynamic, luxurious and loaded with sporting style. Yet each has a slightly different personality like the women who drive them. Deon Blaney recently purchased a new Jaguar XJL sedan, one of many Jaguars she has purchased over the past 20 years. As the owner of a registered investment advisory firm provides portfolio management for high net worth clients, she appreciates the reputation of the car. But Deon enjoys it personally as well. “We have three cars in the household. Our Jaguar is our go-to vehicle when it comes to a road trip or date night. We love the comfort and the elegance of the car. We really didn’t consider any other automobiles. We knew we just wanted another Jaguar.”
Jaguar Land Rover Las Vegas is also her go-to dealership. “We have purchased many cars throughout the years and this purchase experience was outstanding on every level. A purchase of an automobile can be a challenging one but, our salesman, Justin, as well as the dealership made the process seamless and the purchase enjoyable.” Jody Tieszen agrees since she is driving her fourth Jaguar, a red Jaguar XJL. “It is a beautiful car with a beautiful design. I have owned one vintage Jaguar and three new ones and every year the car gets better.” As an interior designer with her own firm, Jody needs a car that is reliable as well as a standout. She only has to go to the service department for oil changes and has been a client of the dealership for years. “It is an impressive vehicle and the red color I selected this year really captures my clients’ attention,” Jody added. Increased leg room, an exquisite interior and sporting agility give the Jaguar XJL a commanding presence inside and out and rear-seat passengers can stretch out. Jaguar features comfort, confidence and safety. Come test drive one at Jaguar Land Rover Las Vegas located at 5255 W. Sahara Ave. For more information, visit JLRLV.com.

DELIVERS HOPE TO CHILDREN AND TEENS WITH THE Y O U T H I N I T I AT I V E C A M PA I G N
New Vista is taking bold steps for children and teens with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The organization is implementing the Youth Initiative Campaign to find solutions and help children and teens with IDD in the foster care system. When a child or teen with IDD is placed in foster care, there are enormous challenges. The alarming magnitude of children with IDD in foster care in Southern Nevada requires intervention and assistance at all levels of the system. New Vista is actively addressing those challenges and engaging in the development of innovative partnerships to address monumental issues and barriers. The specific issues facing children and teens with disabilities in foster care are staggering. Recent reports document the barriers faced by children with IDD in the foster care system. Many times, health care for children with IDD is often compromised and access to treatment or early intervention programs are lacking. Educational experiences are frequently damaging. Opportunities for placement for children and teens with permanent families and lifelong connections with caring, committed adults are severely lacking. Community experiences often are defined by isolation and frequent relocation. When teens reach 18 years of age, they age out of the foster care system and the problems become even bigger. Transitioning to an adult life with more independence, there may be little or no help available to them during this crucial period in their lives.
As of August 2016, Nevada reports having 4,275 children in foster care. An estimated 897 children in Nevada’s foster care system have been diagnosed with a developmental disability. Another concern is that the percentage of students with autism in Nevada exceeds the national rate, and local advocates report that the rate is increasing annually. Within the state of Nevada, Clark County has the highest rate of children/youth ages 6-21 with disabilities. As an IDD community and industry leader, New Vista provides many levels of support, programming and homes designed specifically for Nevada’s children with IDD in foster care. These include a range of specialized, therapeutic, medical or treatment programs that provide children and youth with disabilities with a team of specially trained foster caregivers, respite care providers, medical professionals and social workers. New Vista is committed to the IDD community and understands the critical importance of success in realizing its mission. Part of that commitment is to generate awareness to highlight the exceptional needs of children in foster care with IDD and strengthening efforts to care for children and youth with disabilities. New Vista is a nonprofit organization offering ways to help the IDD community. Visit newvistanv.org to get involved.

HOLISTIC HEALTH and feeling good By Jodi Friedman True healing for the mind/body/spirit connection can be accessed through many various healing modalities and here are some of my favorites:
where someone may not know where or how to retrieve it, unless they are becoming more aware of their inner vision of themselves.
Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) Meditation Reiki Healing touch Hypnosis Tapping Sound healing Essential oils
Through personal adversities, one can embrace knowledge and can begin to expand exponentially as bright new ideas pop up to have better outcomes and more profound meaning in the world.
These modalities can help in bringing negative, toxic thoughts and feelings to the surface to begin the healing process. Becoming painfree through spiritual work requires a deep willingness and awareness to move through the layers and break free of the body’s toxic field. Emotional pain such as anger, sadness, fear, hurt and guilt leads to physical pain that gets locked into the body’s tissue, muscles and cells. The best way that I know to clear out the physical and emotional stressors is to find professional healing facilitators who resonate with your belief system. It’s always prudent to get a personal recommendation from someone you trust. Not all healing facilitators are created equally, and you’ll want to be able to trust your instincts by listening to how you feel inside yourself with them. Everyone needs some form of healing at some point in his or her life. It’s how people recover well from physical ailments, illnesses, health conditions, mental stress and emotional pain. It can feel a lot like energized prayer work. When looking at a person’s ability to heal using a holistic approach, the healing is waiting to be recognized from deep down inside each and every one of us. It can exist in a place
What is it like to have a spiritual awakening? For many, it can be a gentle awareness that their thinking and feelings begin to slowly change the emphasis on things that used to be important to them. For others, the awakening process can feel as if the rug is being pulled out from under them and life changes within an instant. The reason the awakening may occur is to bring more compassion and meaning to people’s lives that are in deep resistance to change. If they are living a life without gratitude or appreciation for others, a spiritual breakdown may be brought forth to change deeply formed patterns to evolve and transform. If someone has taken a path that leads to sorrow, an awakening intervention can be what brings him or her back to a path of clarity. When my awakening took me by surprise in 1994, I found books such as “The Celestine Prophecy” by James Redfield and “Conversations With God” by Neale Donald Walsch. With spirituality being more expanded and openly discussed today, there are many avenues available for anyone feeling alone and isolated. A spiritual awakening is the soul’s cry for freedom. Rejoice in your innermost healing process!

SOCIAL MEDIA
and Business
By McKenzie Chambers Marketing strategies have always been a huge part of many businesses’ goals when the New Year arrives. Social media will continue evolving in the business world in 2018 and beyond. Live streaming is one of the top interests in social media. Many businesses have started to use live streaming to capture the attention of followers. It also gives viewers the feeling of a more intimate relationship. Consumers feel more invested and can connect in a powerful and believable way. In 2018, more brands will start to understand the compelling effect of live streaming. As social media has grown, Twitter has unfortunately failed to grow followers in the last year, despite its use by the president. LinkedIn and Instagram have surpassed Twitter in followers, according to the Internet Trends report by Mary Meeker, a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. A big loss for Twitter was access to streaming NFL games; Amazon now has the streaming rights. Growth for Instagram is additional content known as Stories. It is estimated that over 200 million people use Instagram Stories each month. This is significant and more than the Snapchat platform. It is predicated that in 2018 nearly half of all Instagram users will be using Stories. Instituting Instagram Stories to a brand will help customers stay connected with social status. Multiple brands are communicating constantly. Research shows that people are not only sharing personal information, goals and life steps in their posts, but they also love to mention their brands. Many celebrities give thanks to brands throughout their daily posts and even more so during their successful achievements. Many companies now understand the importance of creating a longterm relationship with their consumers as well as using social media as a platform to advertise. Mobility fuels the major growth of social television. More people are now viewing from their mobile device or tablet. Many social networks offer existential new marketing opportunities involving social marketing. Now that many social media platforms have developed a stable user base and followers, 2018 will have a distinct focus on ad growth for future marketing plans. This means that many businesses are now putting more advertising dollars towards digital media platforms. Video content is always key in the viewers’ eyes. Most importantly, keep in mind that video streaming and virtual reality will become a norm. Take this into consideration for marketing plans now, not in the future. This is the perfect time to evaluate what needs improvement from 2017 to continue making this year the best yet. Brands will need to undertake newer social platforms to get up to par with 2018’s most successful social media trends.

2014 - 2018
Millennials are cause-driven, tech savvy and continue to work passionately to shape their local communities. Many employers are bombarded with misinformation about this generation and how they contribute to the workforce. There are many benefits of hiring and engaging the millennial workforce. For employers who are on the fence about hiring a millennial, here are two popular myths about millennials dispelled.
MYTH: Millennials have no job l o y a l t y. The average length of time at a place of employment for a Baby Boomer is seven years. With millennials, that time is just about two years—long enough to have an opportunity to succeed. They do not have a feeling of entitlement, but they are entitled, like any other employee, to respect in the workplace, more responsibility, fair pay and opportunities for growth. When a millennial joins an organization, they know quickly if their employer is an advocate for them. Employers should take initiative by seeking out leadership development programs specifically designed to advance their millennial workforce. For example, The Leadership Foundation of Greater Las Vegas’ Leadership Advance program (Leadership.Vegas) is tailored specifically for emerging leaders in the workforce and can give millennials information about the community and leadership skills that will last a lifetime. When you show initiative and interest in giving your millennial workforce more opportunities, it will inspire loyalty for your company.
MYTH: Millennials are too picky with their job search. Too often, millennials are pinned as an entitled, social mediaobsessed generation that will not work for a company unless its fits all of their cultural needs. Company culture plays a large factor on whether a millennial chooses a company for good reason. Millennials are all about a strong and vibrant company culture and why wouldn’t they be? Everyone wants to be a part of an organization that makes a difference in their communities; millennials just factor in the culture more in their hiring decisions. Job perks such as paid lunches, time off and fringe benefits along with company culture are weighed alongside salary as part of a total package deal. Employers need to step up their game in terms of company culture and appeal to the values of the millennial generation. For young professionals, make sure you do your homework: just because a company seems to be a good fit on paper doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ask a lot of questions about company culture. You are about to spend 40 plus hours a week in this office. Make sure it’s the right position for you. Millennials are hard working, cause-driven and dedicated people, and make great employees and develop into great leaders. It’s time to dispel the myths and get down to business to make sure your company is adequately attracting them to your organization and ensuring a future pipeline of talented leaders.
