TMJ PAIN RELIEF Delivering Proven Solutions for headaches, jaw pain and joint pain caused by TMD. Neuromuscular Dentistry addresses the relationship of the jaw muscles, jaw joint, head, neck, and body posture. Forty years of research and clinical experience have shown the neuromuscular technique to be effective in treating people with various levels of head and neck pain. Through the use of sophisticated computer analysis, we can help manage or alleviate TMJ pain by objectively determining a natural, comfortably balanced jaw position, and correcting a misaligned bite. We use TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Stimulation) to relax the muscles of the head and neck. TENS is also used to relieve pain caused by spasm and tension by releasing endorphins, the body’s own natural pain killers. As a chronic degenerative disease, it often takes years to develop TMJ. With new techniques and the objective computerized data, we have been able to help many that have been previously unable to find relief.

PUBLISHER M

y husband, Seth Grabel, and I just celebrated our 1-year wedding anniversary. As we watch other couples prepare for their “I-Do” day, we are reminded of the excitement we experienced. Wedding season is officially upon us and to help engaged couples navigate their planning process, Las Vegas Woman magazine has provided a special Wedding Section for ideas and tips. Spring is a beautiful time of year, more so this year as Seth and I embark on our newest journey together: becoming a mom and a dad. We are counting down the weeks and must admit we are a bit nervous as newbie parents. I’ve confided in countless moms as to what to expect in pregnancy, labor, delivery and when our baby girl comes home for the first time. As we get ready for our baby to arrive in May, our thoughtful writers here at Las Vegas Woman magazine are helping us and other moms. Jennifer Florendo has compiled together items that every mom should have in an article cleverly named “Newborn Necessities.” Seth and I are extra appreciative for the freedom we have now to go out now to places like the movies and dinner together before our baby arrives. We recognize that our lives will never be the same once our family expands to three. One place we love to go on our date night is Lee’s Korean B.B.Q. Talk about delicious! The food reminds Seth and I of when were in Korea together. Lee’s Korean B.B.Q. is owned and operated by the Lee family whom also owns the notable Lee’s Discount Liquor stores and is a local family business. We love supporting local businesses and encourage you to do the same. Speaking of local businesses, as you read through the diverse articles in this issue of Las Vegas Woman magazine, remember to support our advertisers. They are the backbone of the publication and make it possible for our team to provide you with information that continues to educate, entertain and inspire! To educate, entertain & inspire,

here are women who actually attend circus school to learn one of the arts of entertaining audiences. Cadence Alexia and Linde Hartman are the high-flying duo of “Absinthe” performing an aerial cradle act. The audience looks up at a fixed metal frame with a small platform suspended with wires. Hartman hangs upside down from the platform from the knees, Alexia swings and Hartman catches her wrist to wrist. The duo then performs various tricks high over the audience.

In the Netherlands, Hartman was enrolled in circus school at the age of six and stayed until age 16. “I like it so much I auditioned to attend a professional circus school and was accepted.” Alexia trained as a gymnast as a child in her home in England. When she grew up, she attempted several careers but the circus drew her back. She auditioned and was also accepted in circus school. When Hartman heard of an opportunity to perform an aerial cradle act in the United States, her partner was not interested. Through her coach, Hartman was introduced to Alexia. They trained together, signed a contract and

moved to Las Vegas about two years ago to perform in “Absinthe.” “I really didn’t know about the show before we came to see it,” Hartman said. “We love the show. It is original and in your face.” “The show fits my sense of humor,” Alexia added. “It is edgy and I really enjoy it. I love inviting my friends.” The duo performs 10 shows a week and train together twice a week as well as individual workouts including hanging from the bars. “This keeps me quite fit,” Alexia explained. “We train to push our endurance as well as practice new tricks.” Massages are also important for maintaining their physical health. In her down time, Alexia is into painting, nail art, owns a dog and hikes in Red Rock Canyon. Hartman practices yoga, also owns a dog and hikes on Mt. Charleston and in Red Rock Canyon as well as taking lessons in speaking Russian. “Absinthe” is hosted by ringmaster The Gazillionaire overseeing a blend of old school

variety, over-the-top circus acts and sultry cabaret with oddities, humor and shock. This is an adults only show. “Absinthe” performs in the Roman Plaza at Caesars Palace Wednesday to Sunday at 8 and 10 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Absinthe box office located in the Roman Plaza at Caesars Palace, calling 702.785.5395 or visiting absinthevegas.com.

have eaten that. It took two days to make it and it was quite tall as you can imagine.” What made this teacher so inspirational for Traen was the way he engaged his students in projects and worked with them to help insure their success.

School didn’t hold much interest for Traen, except for one class: Advance Placement English. While everyone in her school was evidently terrified of this instructor, he pushed his students to use their creativity. One project in particular she remembers vividly: “It was ‘Dante’s Inferno’ and while every assignment in English was usually about writing, he wanted us to do a project that didn’t involve writing, but conveyed the message of the book all the same. I did a ‘Nine Layer Hell Cake’ to represent the book and let me tell you, no way would I

Recruited by University of Nevada, Las Vegas, she moved from the frozen tundra of North Dakota to warm, sunny Las Vegas. “It was nothing like North Dakota. I mean they had palm trees and a pyramid! It was paradise” Traen said. She originally studied Kinesiology, the study of the movements of athletes, but that didn’t last long when she realized the incredible number of math and science classes it was going to take to complete the degree. So, she floundered for a short time and decided to take Drawing 101. The next few years

she went through the motions of getting her undergraduate degree, a B.A. in Studio Fine Art, but she still didn’t know what it meant to be an artist. Her pursuits and artwork took her to Seattle before returning to Las Vegas where she earned her Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction with certification in K-12 Art Education from UNLV. From there, she began teaching at Rancho High School. In 2008, everything clicked for her and the vision she had of herself as a child. She realized that in order to be a good influence to her students and to show them what it means to be an artist; she had to live the life and show by example. “My students inspire me, every day” Traen said.

Walk into her studio at Rancho High School where her students are all busily working on various projects and her studio is incredibly clean, not something that is typically associated with a clay studio. Her advanced students are preparing for a trip to the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts showcase. Last year, two of Traen’s students were chosen to participate in this event. “There are thousands of entries and only 150 are chosen. The fact that we have two from our school is huge” said Traen. They are presently raising funds to attend in Providence, R.I. The trip itself is quite an education with lectures and opportunities to meet with individual artists. The students that went last year had an amazing time and came home inspired to push themselves further. And in doing so, have pushed Traen as well, creatively.

As a result, Traen is having her first solo show at Las Vegas City Hall in the Grand Gallery from May through July. She is presently working in her home studio, amassing pieces for her show and preparing for NCECA. Keep an eye on her, this lady is really going places!

I PREPARE MY CHILDREN Holly, the mother of two in a busy household and pursuing an advanced degree, had few options to engage her preschool aged children Lily and Gabriel. Most preschool options were too expensive for her and her husband. As such, the kids were at home, yet she could see they were yearning for social, emotional and cognitive interaction. Through United Way’s Tuition Assistance Preschool Scholarship program (TAPS), Holly can now send both kids to Griffith Preschool and at the same time finish up her degree so that she can ultimately better provide for her family in the future. Gabriel and Lily are flourishing, and they are gaining vitally important skills that are born from quality early education programs. They will be prepared to start kindergarten, all thanks to an incredible program. When families have resources and are connected, they are prepared to grow and thrive. Through United Way of Southern Nevada’s education programs, we are changing lives. By bringing together the best and brightest, our collective power is creating a more solid community fabric. UNITED WAY’S WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP COUNCIL

A year of accomplishments

F

or United Way’s Women’s Leadership Council, it was a proud year of improving children’s health, watching seniors graduate, collecting thousands of women’s professional items and providing two aspiring young women scholarships to attend local colleges.

One of the crowning achievements for WLC in 2014 was re-opening the Reynaldo Martinez Elementary School Health Clinic. Shuttered in June of 2013, the clinic needed funding to serve nearly 2,500 children a year. Now, these children have a safe haven and primary preventative care, immunizations and sick care. For one Martinez student, the clinic provided life-changing assistance. Leah received help with debilitating asthma that was keeping her from sports and affecting her school attendance. Since receiving treatment, Leah breathes easier and rides her bike almost every day, sometimes to and from school. Leah has not had to go back to the Martinez

Clinic since initially being treated for asthma, but when she needs her annual checkup and her 7th grade vaccinations; she plans to head back to the clinic. In June 2014, WLC also watched 279 students who had been identified as at-risk by CCSD graduate high school. These students and their families were receiving support, comfort and resources through the WLC Family Engagement Resource Centers located in five local high schools: Clark, Sunrise Mountain, Eldorado, Silverado and Western. With almost 12,000 items collected, the very successful annual 2014 WLC Suit Drive brought the community together to donate suits and professional items for women in need. These items were donated to agencies with back-to-work programs for women. “Together, we are helping to lift up women trying to get back on their feet,” said WLC Co-chair, Rhonda Clausen. “Feeling prepared and professional and that you have someone

on your side, rooting for you, can help land lifesustaining employment.” Enjoying the culmination of much hard work, WLC awarded two bright, focused young women, Monica Guiza and Leslie Miranda, the Emerging Leadership Award for Women Scholarship. “This award has taken the burden of paying for my education, and I am so thankful to be a recipient,” said Guiza. “I am also extremely honored to be a part of an organization filled with individuals who are not just leaders, but also loving and caring.” An amazing day of exercise, learning and meeting goals, WLC also supported elementaryaged girls in the lifelong endeavor to increase physical activity and healthy eating by sponsoring the Girls on the Run 5K in November. hile son, Kenny Lee, is the president of the very successful chain of Lee’s Discount Liquor stores, his father and founder of Lee’s Discount Liquor, Hae Un Lee, was looking for new businesses. Through fate, opened Lee’s Korean B.B.Q., offering Korean cuisine and all-you-caneat Korean barbecue in a relaxed setting that encourages everyone to have a good time. It began when Hae Un Lee purchased Korea Town Mall with a Korean restaurant. Originally to be operated by someone else, the deal fell through, but the Lee family still wanted to open an authentic Korean restaurant. They were approached by a woman who had the expertise, along with the desire, to open and manage it. She has been with them since the opening three years ago and the Lee’s Korean B.B.Q. has become very successful with happy customers. While Korean cuisine is diverse, one of the most popular items, especially in the U.S., is tabletop barbecue. “A few years ago it was all about Chinese food, then Japanese food, but now it is Korean food and we are thrilled,” Kenny Lee stated. The restaurant has become popular with all nationalities. Korean cuisine is largely based upon rice, vegetables and meats. Traditional Korean meals are noted for the number of side dishes that accompany steam-cooked short-grain rice that is sticky. Kimchi is served often, sometimes at every meal. Commonly used 24

ingredients include sesame oil, fermented bean paste, soy sauce, salt, garlic, ginger, pepper flakes and fermented red chili paste. with a variety of seasonings. Often described as spicy and salty, there are hundreds of varieties of kimchi made from cabbage, radish, scallion or cucumber as a main ingredient. The seasonings are more pungent since it is combined with sticky white rice. Sundubu jjigae is made with tofu, vegetables, chili paste or chili powder. The dish is assembled and cooked directly in the serving bowl with an egg placed on top of the soup just before serving and delivered while still bubbling.

The most popular drink is Soju, considered Korea’s most popular alcoholic beverage. It is smooth and clean in taste and pairs well with various Korean dishes. The main ingredient of Soju is rice and is usually consumed with a beer chaser. Koreans will also mix Soju and beer as a drink called somac.

There are different cuts of meat used in the barbecue, both with and without marinade. Ribs using a soy-sauce-based marinade blended with garlic and sugar is one of the most popular with diners. Kimchi, also spelled kimchee, is a traditional fermented Korean side dish made of vegetables

MTO CAFÉ

OTTO ENOTECA AND PIZZERIA

TACOS & BEER

The name, MTO, means “made to order.” The café located in downtown Las Vegas across from City Hall and Downtown Summerlin, has captured the feel of a 1950s diner including a large communal table made from the trunk of a Kentucky tree.

Located on Venetian’s Piazza San Marco on the Canal Level, celebrity chef Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich’s Otto Enoteca and Pizzeria offers Italian cuisine with gourmet pizzas, daily pasta plates and fine wine. Indoor dining is romantic while patio seating offers people watching and European street performers.

Tacos & Beer is serious about their drink, featuring 20 rotating beers on draft and several dozen available in bottles. Menu items include beer-battered Baja-style fish tacos loaded with fresh veggies and dripping with chili-lime crema, fresh guacamole topped with toasted spicy pumpkin seeds and pomegranate.

Antipasti include a variety of vegetables from local Farmers Market, such as Beets with Saba and Mixed Marinated Olives. Pizzas are thin, crisp Neapolitan-style and come in over 15 varieties, including classics like Margherita and Meatball and creative variations like The Vongole with fresh clams and The Carbonara with guanciale and locally farmed eggs. Pastas include Butternut Squash Tagliatelle with hazelnuts, brown butter and sage or Black Spaghettini with calamari and sicilian pesto. Cavatelli with Lamb Ragu is braised lamb in tomato and red wine. For dessert, try the assortment of Biscotti such as lemon anise, chocolate pistachio, mosaic, espresso almond and orange hazelnut.

Its Corn Salad is made with fresh corn, roasted poblano pepper, pico, avocado, cotija cheese with a cilantro-lime vinaigrette and pickled red onion. Choose chicken tinga, beef adobada, puerco verde, bbq beef or veggies for Sopes made with refried beans, shredded lettuce, queso fresco, crema and pickled red onion served on a corn masa cake. Steak Huarache is eight ounces grilled and served on a large corn tortilla with roasted poblano, mushroom, onion, refried beans, lettuce, crema, queso fresco and cascabel salsa.

More than décor is the food, classic comfort made with a twist. Breakfast choices include lemon poppy seed pancakes, bacon dippers, vegan carrot coconut pancakes, chicken in a waffle and egg whites, spinach, Tillamook cheddar, jalapeno, mushrooms and broccoli combined. CALIFORNIA PIZZA KITCHEN

MADE LV

LUCKY FOO’S RESTAURANT & BAR

California Pizza Kitchen unveiled a new look and enhanced menu in Downtown Summerlin. More than opening a new restaurant, it is now the new flagship location as CPK Next Chapter.

Made LV is a casual American tavern and neighborhood restaurant; the vision of restaurateur Elizabeth Blau and her chef husband Kim Canteenwalla. The full bar features craft beers, handmade cocktails and wines by the glass. The menu was created to share with family and friends.

Lucky Foo’s Restaurant & Bar, an American Izakaya (Japanese term for dining and drinks destination) is open for lunch, dinner and late night. Its menu is a combination of Asian, Mediterranean and American cuisine.

While favorites remain on the menu such as Original BBQ Chicken pizza, new items have been added. California flatbreads have been added including a new smoked ham and Swiss with goat cheese, caramelized onions and smashed garlic croutons. For breakfast, try a pizza topped with an egg prepared sunny side up. Kale salad is new on the menu; fresh, tasty and full of nutrients. For entrees, hearth roasted halibut, caught wild from the Aleutian Islands, is roasted on cedar plan with butternut squash, faro, baby kale and grilled asparagus. New desserts include decadent salted caramel pudding with black cocoa cookie crumbs. The décor has been transformed with a retrostyle lounge with full bar and specialty drinks, open kitchen, reclaimed woods, exposed ceilings with patio seating overlooking the courtyard. Specialties include Breads & Jars, snacks including Bacon Cheddar Biscuits served with honey salt butter and Black Truffle Cheese Fondue with salt & pepper chips. Nueske Dog is beer steamed and grill finished with sauerkraut, grain mustard, house relish and served with fries. Smoked Ham Hock Nachos are made with pale ale queso, cowboy beans, Anaheim peppers and roasted tomatoes.

One choice for a starter is Foo Dogs, a kurobuta sausage wrapped in a potato chip with bulldog sauce and karashi mustard. Its Robata Skewer, traditional Japanese yakitori skewers grilled on binchotan charcoal at 1000 degrees, include chicken and scallion; pork belly, beef and onion; shrimp and bacon; shitake mushroom or asparagus.

For seafood lovers, Beer Steamed Clams made with tenaya hefeweizen beer, chicken chorizo, red potatoes and served with garlic bread. For hearty appetites, try Half BBQ Chicken covered with Carolina baptize slather and served with sides of mac & cheese and tavern slaw. Bag Of Donut Holes to be dipped in salted caramel ends the meal perfectly.

Another specialty is Lemon Roll topped with yellowtail, salmon, lemon and ponzu sauce. An American influenced dish is Foo Burger, house ground brisket and chuck, house pickles, kasha aioli, garlic, shoestring potatoes and wasabi ketchup. With dessert, try Lychee Panna Cotta, a grilled lychee with pineapple coconut sauce. The menu also includes noodles, salads, sandwiches, steak, ribs and chicken. Food and drink specials are offered Monday to Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.

SPRINGTIME BRINGS OUT FRUITY AND FLORAL WINES In spring, I tend to like the lighter, aromatic wines that help usher in warmer weather. They also pair well with lighter dishes of the spring season.

e e L y n n e K ! s r e e h C

Conundrum White This unique white wine blend was created by Chuck Wagner of Caymus winery. Aromas of honeysuckle and orange blossom lead to a bright palate brimming with sweet citrus and juicy tangerine flavors. Enjoy as an aperitif, or pour to complement light seafood dishes. $19.99

Eppa White Sangria Fruity and inviting, with tasty characteristic of the ripe fruit juices used in its creation; light and refreshing, with crisp citrus notes that meld into pomegranate and berry overtones. Its natural, subtle sweetness is a result of its blend of real fruit juices. Enjoy as an aperitif. $8.99

Estancia Pinot Grigio One of the top domestic pinot grigio in the market, this wine has a fresh, fruit forward front palate with racy acidity, balanced by roundness from contact with the lees. Lemon and orange blossom honey collides with hint of roses. Seamless structure and a generous finish make this wine a true delight. Again, serve as an aperitif or with light dishes. $8.99

Kenwood Sonoma Sauvignon Blanc It’s hard to find Sonoma appellation wines for under $10. This Sauvignon Blanc is a lovely pale yellow. With the crack of the cap, unleash the unexpected as an array of delicious aromas leap from the glass. Tropical melon, pineapple and passion fruit tempt your senses. Great wine for spicy Asian dishes. $7.99

Baron Des Chartron Bordeaux Blanc This is brilliant, green and gold with intense aromas of fresh exotic fruits, grapefruits and mineral undertones and is a very typical Sauvignon Blanc from Bordeaux region. Enjoy intense aroma on palate with Muscat notes, fresh and lively finish with good length. Enjoy with seafood and spring vegetables. $7.99

The Great Allure of a Noble French Wine

A LOCAL SOCIETY DEVOTED TO APPRECIATING FINE BORDEAUX WINES

A

re you curious about the famous Bordeaux wines of France? Las Vegas has a social group devoted to learning about and sampling both the red and white wines from this famous wine-growing region. The nonprofit Commanderie de Bordeaux Las Vegas was formed in 2002 and is one of 35 chapters worldwide.

In Las Vegas, the Commanderie de Bordeaux meets six times a year. Each meeting is really a tasting with a theme and involves a sampling of wines from a specific year, called a vintage in the wine world, or from a specific Bordeaux region. In wine terms, a region like Pauillac or Margaux is known as an appellation and, in France, the right to use it is strictly controlled. Each tasting is paired with interesting food, which is especially selected to complement the complex flavors of the wine. I recently attended a Las Vegas Commanderie de Bordeaux dinner, Pride of Your Cellar. Members and guests were invited to bring a bottle of their favorite Bordeaux to share with their fellow wine lovers. Like all chapter meetings, this was a very social event. After all, wine is a drink that is meant to be shared and these gatherings provide an ideal opportunity to share both wine and opinions. Dinners include an educational discussion of the wines and which foods pair best with them. Costs vary, depending on the restaurant, but the cost for past dinners ranged from $100 and up. With 32

the interesting wines and delicious food, I had a great time, learned a good deal and can’t wait for the next one.

River. There’s an old French adage that the best estates in Bordeaux can “see the river” from their vineyards.

If you’re thinking of checking it out, here is some background information. Bordeaux is the largest wine-growing region in France, producing an average of over 700 million bottles a year. Bordeaux wines range from vin ordinaire, or everyday table wine, to some of the most expensive and prestigious wines in the world. More than 8,400 producers, which are known as châteaux, are currently producing Bordeaux wines. Winemaking is so successful in the region because of its fortuitous geology. The limestone foundation creates a soil structure that is heavy in calcium and composed of gravel, sandy stone and clay. In fact, the most-prized wines are grown in the well-drained, gravelly soils near the Gironde

Commanderie de Bordeaux in Las Vegas members appreciate these wines along with the history and tradition involved in creating them. I recently joined the club and I’ve been delighted by the variety of interesting people I’ve met. As a bonus, I now can actually pronounce the names of wines I’ve been enjoying for years. If you are interested in joining the Commanderie de Bordeaux in Las Vegas and don’t happen to know an existing member, an invitation as a guest can be arranged. It’s an affordable adventure for anyone interested in the fine wines of Bordeaux. For information about the next event, contact Richard Yukes at LasVegas1234@gmail.com or visit commanderiebordeauxlv.org.

The Napa General Store

A NAPA VALLEY NATIVE FINDS HER TRUE CALLING

W

henever I’m lucky enough to be in Napa, I love to visit the Napa General Store. It offers terrific food, unusual gifts and lovely home and personal accessories. Owners Jill and Jim Brandt take pride in offering the very best of the Napa Valley and are easy going, fun and I enjoy chatting with them. Their hard-working staff is expert at customer service and I’m always especially impressed with the store’s wine educator, Tammy Wisnoskie. Her family settled in Napa in the 1930s, making Wisnoskie a third-generation Napa native. She loves everything about the valley and is a talented artist herself, as well as a devoted mom to her teenage daughter. Her professional passion, however, has definitely turned out to be fine wines. That’s why she is so well-suited to her position at the Napa General Store. Its tasting bar is famous for serving one-of-a-kind artesian wines from Napa’s small vintners. Such vintners typically produce only five hundred to a thousand cases a year and usually don’t have a winery or tasting room. For many, winemaking is a second career or retirement avocation. Their wines aren’t available at other retail locations, although they’re sometimes found on restaurant wine lists. Understanding and appreciating these boutique wines is part of Wisnoskie’s job and she loves to share her knowledge with customers. “We are so pleased to be able to taste and sell

these unique hand-crafted wines,” she said. “Learning about them and the vintners who make them has been such a vital part of my education in fine wines.” In fact, Wisnoskie is becoming a certified wine sommelier. She is taking classes at Napa Valley College and has already passed her second exam. Once she is finished with her training, she will be fully qualified to continue her career in the exciting and ever-changing field she’s discovered she loves. Still, Wisnoskie brings a wealth of specialized experience to her job. She began her career with one of the first online wine sale sites and helped develop its policies and procedures, while she had the opportunity to taste and evaluate a wide variety of wines. From there, she worked for the Napa Valley Vintners Association, managing its databases. She also learned how important it is to protect the integrity of place names in the industry. During her tenure, the association sued a winemaker whose wines were labeled as Napa but whose grapes actually came from other places. Now, for a wine to say Napa on the label, at least 85 percent of its grapes must come from the Napa Valley. These experiences led to more opportunities for Wisnoskie. She worked for a vineyard management company and learned about the technical aspects of winemaking, including spray, nutrient and pest management. The more she

learned, the more excited she became about the complex factors that go into creating fine wines. She enrolled in her first viticulture class and soon decided she needed a job that would enable her to attend daytime classes. She found the perfect match with Sunshine Foods, purveyors for many of the fine restaurants and chefs in the Napa area. She also had experience representing the industry to airline and cruise lines, tasting and recommending wines for major clients including Delta Airlines and Virgin Atlantic. Wisnoskie can truly claim to have worked in all the areas that are significant to her chosen profession. Right now, her favorite place to be is the Napa General Store. “I get to pour amazing wines from wonderful producers and share my enthusiasm with people from all over the world. The Brandts are terrific supporters, for both the industry and their employees. And what place could be more beautiful than Napa?” SPRING 2015 | W oman m aga zine .V egas

L

ocal leaders from fashion, business and the arts have joined together to form the Las Vegas Fashion Council, a not-for-profit trade association with fashion professionals, students, community leaders, philanthropists and organizations that have a common desire to diversify and expand the Las Vegas fashion industry. Founded by Carrie Carter-Cooper, Las Vegas native and founder/president of BESTAgency, the council embodies a passion for fashion, philanthropy and community. Through a series of events and educational programs, Las Vegas will be established as an international player in the fashion industry. Las Vegas is rapidly expanding its fashion offerings through various leading fashion houses with flagship locations. The city currently hosts some of the largest fashion conferences in the world and the local fashion industry is evolving.

In 2014, the Las Vegas Fashion Council hosted a Little Black Dress competition featuring designs by students from The Art Institute of Las Vegas. The event was hosted at Stitch Factory and included a fashion show by Vasari Boutique. The student with the winning design, Martha Aispuro, was awarded $500 in scholarship funds and the Las Vegas Fashion Council also donated a percentage of proceeds from ticket sales to Dress For Success of Southern Nevada. Aispuro is a third quarter fashion design student at the Art Institute of Las Vegas and

It had a high square neckline, a low back with criss cross straps, and a box pleated full skirt. Aispuro wanted to feature and create something that embodied her personality and what was trending now. She pulled her inspiration from current celebrity fashions, magazine features, and the fashionable choices from members of her generation.

Ask Dr.Tiger

BY DR. TIGER DEVORE

A forum for women about sex, sexuality, health and intimacy

W

elcome to the forum for issues about women’s sexuality, provided by Las Vegas Woman magazine. I will serve as the moderator and expert for topics you ask about, as well as some discussion of ideas I want to bring to your attention.

Here we can learn about all issues of sexuality, from how medications can affect your sexual feelings, to how to learn skills for dating after years of being away from the dating scene. Some topics will be about physical responsiveness, some about emotional responses to events and changes in life. We will discuss how various diseases including cancers affect sexuality, how hormonal changes affect sexuality, how physical injuries can affect sexuality. Sex and sexual satisfaction can be affected by changes in sleep patterns, diet, exercise, changes in your or your partner’s workplace situations, financial changes and changes that come with loss of friends, or even new friends coming into our lives. Other changes that occur include pregnancy, dealing with an infant in the house, raising a teen, teaching your own children about dating and making responsible choices around their own sexuality. Once our children leave the home, we need think about what it means to have raised children and live again in a house without kids, alone with or without an adult partner. And, of course, how important it is to remember to make time for and prioritize intimacy in all of our very busy lives. Some of the topics that will come out of the headlines: Is there a new pill coming out for women that will increase their sexual desire? How do couples adjust to the advent of pills (or injections) for men that make it

easier to perform sexually, but may not bring the feelings or sensations that will make sex appealing beyond providing stronger erections? How do we make informed decisions about social and political issues like sex education in schools or availability of abortion unless we have read what sexual science has taught us about those issues? How do we understand changes in our society that affect us and our families as it regards changes in how we view differences in sexual partnering, greater acceptance of both our own preferences and the preferences of others. Of course, how does criminal sexuality threaten our community and how can we be better prepared to understand and guard against that threat to ourselves and the people we care most about?

Sex and sexual satisfaction can be affected by changes in sleep patterns, diet, exercise, changes in your or your partner’s workplace situations... So, here in this forum we can learn about all of these topics, from the entertaining, to the most serious, without having to draw any conclusions or take any strict position, but to just look at good information from which to draw the guidance that is right for any one of us. Information will be presented with as little bias as possible, respecting as much as is practical all differences in opinion, with no judgment

about controversy that can arise from various forms of cultural or personal difference. If ever anyone feels that one point of view or another has been underrepresented I will be glad to include and recognize that missing aspect as much as is practical. LAS VEGAS WEDDING W

hile Las Vegas is one of the top wedding capitals of the world, over 2 million people call Southern Nevada home and want to get married in Las Vegas as well. One real Las Vegas Wedding Story is about Dickson Daggi, a retired Army specialist and Purple Heart awardee who survived two tours in Iraq. The bride is Nikki Abo who works as a pharmacist in Las Vegas. Abo spoke about her wedding: We have been planning our wedding for over a year and when the day came, it made all the hard work so worth it. With 150 in attendance, it was beyond amazing to have our closest family and friends fly in from Philippines, Hawaii, Guam, Canada and more than a dozen other states.

Most of the groomsmen are Dickson’s brothers in arms, while most of the gorgeous bridesmaids go all the way back from when I was a little girl back home in the Philippines. Dickson and I met in 2007 in California through a battle buddy of his who happens to be my cousin and who will be the best man in the wedding. As they say, the rest is history. The most important thing for us in the celebration was for everyone to have fun and just enjoy the day. Of course, the flowers follow very closely. We placed flowers throughout the lakeside tent and decided to go bare in church, where we felt like it was best to focus on the vows we exchanged and the faith we believe in. We want to thank everyone including: Photography - Steven Joseph Photography

Fisher Price 4-in-1 Sling ‘n’ Seat Tub, $39.99 Four unique grow-with-me stages allow parents to only make one tub purchase. The soft newborn sling keeps the littlest one in just the right amount of water. As your baby grows, so does the tub by providing the next stage of sitting support. Includes a strainer, rinse bottle, and hook and drain plug for drying.

Perfect Position 4-in-1 Nursing Pillow, available in March, $12.99-$16.99 The convenient U-shape makes for close and comfortable feedings. Two pillow heights provide the right angle and support as baby grows. The pillow can also be used as a lay and play lounger with the removable overhead bar or as a tummy time wedge.

Ubimed Breathable Bumper, $49.99 While some swear by bumpers and some say stay away, this breathable version has been scientifically tested to reduce the risks of suffocation and entanglement. The padded bumper keeps small arms and legs safely inside the crib and is collapsible to prevent toddlers from climbing over.

Fisher Price Auto Rock ‘n Play Sleeper, $79.99 Quite possibly the Holy Grail for newborn sleep. Keep baby entertained with music and toys while keeping them cozy in the inclined rocker that rocks at the push of a button. When the baby sleeps, mama can now sleep too. Also folds up easy storage and portability.

Nested Bean, $29.99 There is nothing more precious than a sleeping baby, except for parents who get sleep too. Swaddling helps keep the startle reflex at bay and the weighted infant swaddle mimics a parent’s comforting touch, helping to soothe the little one into a sweet slumber.

Fisher Price Comfort Vibe Play Wedge, $19.99 Infants either love or hate tummy time, but it is so important for helping to build their neck muscles. Make it more tolerable with this vibrating wedge featuring music and woodland-themed toys.

Aden + Anais Swaddle Blankets, starting at $32 This is definitely one of the most used newborn must-have items. These cotton muslin swaddles make swaddling easy, work great as a nursing cover, stroller cover, burp cloth, tummy time blanket and more.

Aden + Anais Soothing Ointment, $28.95 This is an ointment of all trades: helps heal diaper rash, cracked skin and lips, and wind burn while infused with a light vanilla scent.

ou know, Akitas kill.”

It was said so quietly, I almost didn’t catch it. I was too busy watching 10 month old Apollo being pushed around by another puppy in puppy class.

“You know, Akitas kill.” The second time, it was said with more certainty. I looked at the woman to my left. Now that she had my attention, she repeated herself.

eliminating pet euthanasia, and to the overall health of all of our pets. Let’s talk about the challenges of raising children with pets. Raising my fur-kids is enough of a second job. Women who raise both are my heroes.

In retrospect, I am not much better than the woman who spoke badly about my Akitas. My trainers are quick to point out that I’ve been quoted as saying “Chihuahuas are mean.”

In fact, one of my heroes is the reason why I am writing now for Las Vegas Woman magazine. Action News Anchor Beth Fisher has held this post for years. Her plate was already pretty full with a husband, two kids and a St. Bernard, and she’s very active in her church and the Southern Nevada community.

“You know, Akitas kill.”

She has also become the point person for Channel 13’s website, PositivelyLV and produces and writes the stories about locals who are Making Las Vegas a Better Place to Live. With her added responsibilities, I was given the opportunity to live a dream of writing for print. Thanks Beth, and thank you all for spending time with her, and hopefully now, with me on these pages.

I snapped. Apollo is the third Akita I’d raised in classes at this particular dog gym, and I was tired of other owners projecting breed prejudice based on anecdotes. “Have you ever seen an Akita kill?” “No, but...” I didn’t let her say another word. As I very quietly, but intensely, told her what I thought about the opinion I didn’t solicit, her friend leaned forward and said, “Hey, you’re Rikki Cheese!” Too late. I had already unleashed the verbal hounds. It was a very good lesson, and one I hope to share. I’ve become very active in the dog world through constant training with my Akitas. My family always had dogs growing up, but I never experienced the acute divisions until now. Animal lovers who rescue dogs aren’t always fans of people who buy. Animal lovers who like

The point is, we all have our own perspectives about our pets and other people’s pets. The perspectives I’ve encountered in my dogrelated travels over the past seven years also opened my eyes to the world of exotic pets, including dogs and cats, big and small, and every conceivable pet from gerbils to pythons. Let’s talk about the differences between service animals and therapy animals. Let’s talk about how vital spay and neuter policies are to

People who are passionate about animals usually have strong opinions. I want to hear and share stories from all sides. I also want to focus on the challenges of raising families in Southern Nevada, whether they are two-legged kids, four-legged kids, or have feathers, fur or fangs. Let’s have fun together, and educate each other here on the pages of Las Vegas Woman magazine. worked hard to have a successful career, but after having children, the corporate world was no longer appealing to me. The late hours, travel and being away from my two young daughters was breaking my heart. I felt I was missing out on significant mile stones and no one could fill the role of “mommy” while I was away. I prayed for an option to replace my income yet have a flexible schedule, I started to give up hope and figured something like that simply didn’t exist for moms like me,” said Jennifer Becker. “Shortly after, I came across Moms Making Six Figures and I assumed maybe it was a support group for moms who had to work outside the home. I met with founder Heidi Bartolotta and discovered Moms Making Six Figures is a marketing company that allows women to work from home and either replace or supplement their income; I left our meeting feeling like she was the answer I had been praying for! Reaching out and deciding to partner with Moms Making Six Figures has been one of the best decisions I have ever made, my life has changed significantly from volunteering in my daughter’s

kindergarten class, attending school field trips, taking my 3 year old to weekly gymnastics classes and spending Saturday mornings on the soccer field, all while earning a significant income around my family’s schedule.” Can a mother really stay at home and make six figures? Bartolotta, president and owner of Moms Making Six Figures, says the answer is definitely yes! “We don’t sell anything and we are not your traditional homebased business. We’ve developed a business model that requires no overhead, no inventory and no selling,” she stated. Sound too good to be true? BEGINS CONSTRUCTION ON NATION’S LARGEST RECYCLING COMPLEX

H

the recycling process. It will include displays, videos and educational materials on recycling and sustainability. The learning center is intended to be a resource for the community, customers, schools and youth groups as well as an educational destination for sustainability-minded Las Vegas tourists.

istorically, Southern Nevada has lagged behind much of the nation when it comes to recycling rates. With the commencement of construction in November 2014 on what will be the country’s largest residential recycling complex, Republic Services aims to change that trend and put Las Vegas on the map with increased recycling rates.

The Southern Nevada Recycling Complex will have the capability to process roughly 1,000 tons of mixed recyclables per day or 70 tons per hour. It is expected to accommodate future growth in the Valley, and increased commercial, industrial, construction and demolition recycling demands throughout Southern Nevada.

Once complete, the Southern Nevada Recycling Complex will double residential recycling capacities in Southern Nevada. The new 110,000-square-foot facility will be home to highly advanced recycling technologies, located next to the existing 88,000-square-foot recycling facility. “This is a historic time for the city of North Las Vegas, Clark County and customers throughout Southern Nevada,” said Tim Oudman, Area President of Republic Services. “It is fitting that a recycling complex of this magnitude is coming to Las Vegas. Southern Nevada is home to considerable natural beauty, and this community is deeply committed to sustainability. We are truly proud to invest in a recycling complex that will help preserve the local environment for future generations, and enable customers to meet or exceed their recycling goals.” The construction project has created 80 new jobs between partners Cambridge Construction and the CP Group. The complex is scheduled to begin operations in the fall and is expected to eventually employ 180 full-time personnel. 66

“The city of North Las Vegas is proud to be the future home of the nation’s largest residential recycling complex,” said John J. Lee, mayor of North Las Vegas. “Our community will take tremendous pride in this complex and its contributions to the local economy. With expanded recycling capabilities, and a world-class learning center, our residents and businesses will have more resources than ever before, to increase overall recycling participation.” The Southern Nevada Recycling Complex will also feature an interactive learning center that offers visitors a rare, first-hand view of

Republic Services currently operates 62 recycling facilities nationwide, and partners with over 100 mills and manufacturers worldwide to turn recycled items into new products. Employing over 1,300 local Southern Nevadan’s who serve more than 535,000 households and 27,000 commercial customers, Republic Services serves many municipalities in the area, including the cities of North Las Vegas, Las Vegas and Henderson, as well as Clark County. Follow the progress of Southern Nevada Recycling Complex construction project on Twitter and Facebook.com/ RepublicServicesVegas. he benefits of Pilates for those 50 or older are amazing; just ask Mick Jagger, Madonna, Sting or Jane Fonda. A strong and solid core is the nucleus of a healthy body, regardless of age. As we grow older, it becomes more and more important to concentrate on strengthening our core muscles to help support our spine. Equally as important is to strengthen the smaller muscle groups to take some of the strain away from the larger counterparts.

Pilates offers a low impact but effective way to strengthen and tone muscles. Exercise is important for everyone, but aerobic exercise

puts a lot of strain on the heart, lungs and joints, something that can hinder the older population. For men and women over 50, Pilates can be a good alternative—a low impact regime with huge benefits. Through Pilates, one learns to strengthen weak muscles and correct their posture. Even people who haven’t exercised for 50 years can achieve a degree of flexibility they have not enjoyed since their 20s. Some of the problems we experience as we age include kyphosis (also called round back or hunchback), lordosis (commonly referred to as swayback or saddle back), lower back problems and frozen shoulder. By strengthening the muscle groups affected and increasing flexibility, Pilates can help relieve the pain that accompanies these ailments. Even those who have already begun suffering from osteoporosis can benefit from practicing a modified Pilates routine. Pilates also helps to prevent osteoporosis by increasing bone density. Keep in mind that it’s naturally important to check with your doctor first before starting something new.

Pilates exercises can be performed at any level of fitness, so it is good for beginners and then work to a more advanced level. The exercises are gentle; you will be comfortable performing them. Some of the best benefits are the improvements to the joints. Neck, back and shoulder pains are alleviated when in a Pilates program. So if looking for a low impact workout that will improve body, mind and spirit, give Pilates a try. There are Pilates classes and studio’s available worldwide including Symmetry in Motion LV (symmetryinmotionlv. com). Aim for three Pilates workouts each week for a total body head-to-toe workout and enjoy a new Pilates body. Certified Pilates Instructors and Wellness Advocates Tania Molina and Antoinette Modrok, have over 30 years of combined experience in the Pilates and wellness industry. Whether it’s a difficult root canal, dental implant or braces, we strive to master the dental technique first. Our goal at the Dental Implant Institute is to provide services in one location for the patient’s comfort.

What advice can you give people about maintaining good dental health? Visit your dentist regularly including regular cleanings, but more importantly, good home oral care by brushing thoroughly before bedtime and in the morning. Also floss before bedtime. The decay on teeth is caused by bacteria and food, especially sugar, which is a source for bacteria to grow. While sleeping, the inactivity of the tongue and lack of saliva promotes the bad bacteria growth in the mouth.

haron Kim, DDS, opened Kimodontics Orthodontics to provide excellent care focusing on patients’ individual needs and features the most effective orthodontic technology, including braces for patients of all ages and Invisalign clear aligners. Dr. Kim received her Bachelor of Science degree in molecular and cellular biology with a focus in neurobiology from the University of California, Berkeley. She earned her Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of Southern California, graduating at the top of her class and becoming a member of the exclusive OKU National Dental Honor Society. Dr. Kim completed her education at the USC Orthodontics Program, where she received her orthodontics training and a master’s degree in Craniofacial Biology.

Is there a certain age when someone cannot be treated using Orthodontics? I believe if someone is motivated to achieve a better smile, then age is not a factor. My oldest patient was 65 years old. With age we must be conscious of the health of the gums and teeth, but orthodontics still offers tremendous benefits. Straight teeth are cleaner and healthier than crooked teeth, and a beautiful smile can greatly bolster one’s self-esteem.

What is new in the practice of Orthodontics? Invisalign is a newer technique that offers excellent esthetics and great results, even in complex cases. To be a good candidate, a patient must follow a strict regimen of wearing their aligners, since good compliance will dictate the success of the treatment. Invisalign is a great alternative for patients who want treatment but don’t want braces. Our office also has an iTero 3D Digital Scanner, which allows us to replace dental impressions with a comfortable and easy scan. This is among the newest technology in the field of orthodontics.

Is there a difference between men and women and dental health? Issues with gums can occur in women due to pregnancy. As a mother, I can also see how women will take care of their families’ dental health before their own. I want to remind women that it’s important to take care of themselves. Doing so is necessary to stay strong and healthy in order to care for your family.

What makes your team so special? My team is special because they care so much about our patients and the practice. We share the vision to provide quality care for the patients in a fun and friendly environment. Together, we work towards making each patient feel comfortable, and we strive to treat every patient like a part of our family.

What do you enjoy most about Orthodontics? Being an orthodontist has been a wonderful experience. It is most rewarding to watch my patients change as their smile transforms. I have seen shy and reserved patients blossom into exciting and vibrant people, eager to share their smile with everyone. We often take for granted the power of a smile, but a smile is truly the universal welcome. My goal is to give my patients a beautiful and healthy smile that they can be proud of. I believe with that, they have the power to go out and conquer the world.

ouglas Sanchez, DMD, of Infinity Dental Family Dentistry is skilled in different areas including dental implants, implant supported dentures (All-on-Four teeth in one day), cosmetic, restorative, endodontic and general/family care. His services also include oral sedation dentistry, BOOST Whitening, Invisalign Orthodontics, veneers, crown and bridge, sealants and root canals. Dr. Sanchez prides himself in being able to care for his patients in all of these areas and prevent the need for referrals to specialists. He is a family man who enjoys spending time with his 11 year old daughter.

In 2015, what is the big change for Infinity Dental? We merged practices with a retiring doctor in July of last year. Our practice has blossomed and really come together. Our new location is great. It’s a newer, even more comfortable environment for our patients. We’ve got a beautiful building and an incredible view around us. We’re also easier to access from the freeway, which gives our patients more convenience when it comes to location.

What is some of the new technology you have incorporated into your practice? It’s important to us to stay current with advances in technology, so I take continued courses to make sure we stay ahead of the curve. There are so many advances that dental treatment options have become so much more obtainable. I’m very enthusiastic about what is called the All-on-Four procedure or Teeth in One Day. I really enjoy doing implants individually, but have also gained a lot of experience in the All-on-Four fixed denture procedure. I think this is incredible because I can take a patient in a removable denture with little to no teeth, place four to six implants and attach a permanent fixed denture, all in the same day. This is amazing to watch and to be able to take someone who’s been told their only option is removable teeth and put them back into a naturally functioning, non-removable denture is incredible. It’s honestly a change in their quality of life and I’m thrilled to be able to offer services like this.

Since the move, we’ve brought on our full-time hygienist Patricia, who’s incredible at what she does. She is thorough, gentle, caring and really makes a difference in our patient’s recall visits. We have our office manager Brittany, who helps keep us operating smooth and moving forward, two full-time clinical assistants Brianna and Katie that help make every patient’s experience a great one, an insurance coordinator/ front office receptionist Abigail and our bookkeeper Marie. With the team we have in place right now, it’s easy to say my office is running more efficient than ever before. We have such a dedicated and positive staff. I can really see the difference it makes in maintaining personal, close relationships with each and every one of our patients. I think having the proper staff allows us to ensure patients are at ease and comfortable during every visit.

Services include preventive, restorative and cosmetic dentistry, with a special focus on porcelain veneers, clear aligner therapy and endodontic procedures.

Why did you enter the field of dentistry? When I was little, my older siblings were in medical school and I thought it was so neat

There is nothing more rewarding than giving a person who used to never smile... a renewed self-confidence from simply correcting, aligning or replacing teeth. that they were becoming doctors. Naturally, I wanted to be a doctor and help people, too. After I visited my best friend who was in dental school, and upon learning more about dentistry, I became fascinated and knew I had found my calling. As a dentist, I help people feel better, and be healthy, and I get to make them smile.

Why did you enter the field of cosmetic dentistry? I appreciate cosmetic dentistry for its ability to enhance and create beautiful, attractive smiles that patients are proud to show off. There is nothing more rewarding than giving a person who used to never smile, or covered his mouth to laugh, a renewed self-confidence from simply correcting, aligning or replacing teeth. I love

the challenge and uniqueness that comes from each individual case, too. Though the treatment might differ, the end result is always the same— beautiful smiles and a restored self-confidence.

What are some of the latest treatments available for cosmetic dentistry? Cosmetic dentistry has come a long way in the past ten years with improvements in dental materials, bonding agents, veneers and clear aligning techniques. I think one of the best new treatments is the placing of veneers. Veneers assist in perfecting a smile painlessly and in a relatively short amount of time. They completely cover any misshapen, discolored or crooked teeth and leave patients with a beautiful smile.

What should a person look for when selecting a dentist? Being clinically sound is a must, but I believe a great dentist is more than that; people should look for someone that they trust, who meets patients in the middle to break down barriers that may exist, like anxiety or financial obstacles. I am devoted to my rapport with my patients because I know that with a mutually respectful relationship, comes honest and open communication, which allows me to better treat my patients and keep them happy and healthy. CE NT E R FOR SIGHT Dr. Eva Liang BY DEBBIE HALL

t’s pretty simple; nobody wants less than the best possible vision.” So said board-certified ophthalmologist and refractive surgeon, Eva Liang, M.D., who is passionate about providing the best eye care available to Las Vegas Valley residents. Her practice, Center for Sight, offers a friendly and professional environment with state of the art technology, highly trained physicians and staff and a commitment to educate patients in the best possible solutions for achieving optimal vision. Born in Taipei, Taiwan, and raised in Honolulu and Las Vegas, Dr. Liang developed an interest in medicine during her years attending Bishop Gorman High School. She pursued this academically by a Bachelor of Science degree from Loyola Marymount University and a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Nevada School of Medicine. Her postgraduate training included an internship at the University of Hawaii Integrated Transitional Program and was followed by an ophthalmology residency at Temple University Hospital. Dr. Liang is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive

Surgery and the American College of Surgeons. From an early age, Dr. Liang knew she would enter the field of science. In her fourth year in medical school and during her first rotation, she worked with ophthalmologist Dr. Marietta Nelson, who, became a mentor. The experience solidified her interest in ophthalmology, which she found to be an excellent fit for her skills. “In ophthalmology, we incorporate math, optics and medicine, so I’ve been able to build upon my early love of math and science. I found that in this specialty,

20/Happy’ is not just part of our tagline, it is truly the disposition of my entire organization, whose mission is centered on keeping our patients happy.

79

even my undergraduate academic work was highly relevant and useful to my practice of specialized medicine,” Dr. Liang explained. “I wanted to have an impact on people’s quality of life, and I wanted to pursue happy medicine. Ultimately, I chose ophthalmology, because the eyes are a window into the body. For example, when someone has had poorly controlled diabetes, they will likely have diabetic retinopathy, which we can easily see with a dilated eye exam or fundus photo. The other appealing aspects of ophthalmology are the microsurgical aspects and the precision involved. I am very happy with my decision because I get to help people see better every day. In fact, the practice tagline is, ‘Making your world 20/Happy,’” said Liang. A primary aspect of Center for Sight is the new technology being introduced and used at the Center. Dr. Liang and her staff routinely inform and educate patients about options and procedures available and what is in the best long-term interest for individual patients’ vision. Choices today include laser-assisted cataract surgery, premium intraocular lens implants and micro-invasive glaucoma stents. Laser-assisted cataract surgery is excellent for reducing astigmatism, effecting greater accuracy in surgery and helping to ensure better visual outcomes. Performed under

80

W oman m aga zine .V egas | SPRING 2015

computer-guided imaging, critical incisions are performed, using the laser, with a level of precision that cannot be compared to that of the human hand. During the procedure, the eye can also be measured to help refine the lens power a patient needs for optimal vision. Center for Sight makes available to its patients the newest lenses and technology available, both from a diagnostic and therapeutic perspective, which allows for best visual outcomes. Center for Sight offers both conventional and laser-assisted surgery options. The FDAapproved, computer-guided femtosecond laser implements the most advanced cataract removal system available and represents a significant medical advance in surgical technique. Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most successful procedures performed today. The goal of cataract surgery is to break the old, cloudy lens into pieces, remove these from the eye, and insert an artificial lens to replace the natural lens. In conventional surgery, the ophthalmologist accomplishes these tasks by making an incision with a blade and then using instruments about the size of a pen tip. With laser technology, incisions and critical cuts are performed with computer-guided precision to reduce astigmatism and soften the lens so that less ultrasound energy is needed during the cataract removal.

“Approximately 24.5 million in America have cataracts, a leading cause of blindness in the United States. Cataract surgery remains the most effective way to help restore vision for those with cataracts,” as published by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Despite the safety and effectiveness of cataract surgery, in general, Dr. Liang emphasizes to her patients the possible benefits of delaying the procedure. She explained that by waiting until surgery is needed and recommended by their eye care provider, the patient can then benefit from the latest technology. She uses the analogy of buying a computer: Invest in one when you need it but remember that a newer, better model will come out later. “We advise patients to consider cataract surgery when their vision is affected and they are unable to see well enough to perform their activities of daily living,” said Liang. Traditionally, a lot of time is spent presurgery on testing and calculations, for each patient, to estimate the power of the lens that needs to be inserted into the eye during surgery. She can also use ORA, a device that attaches to the surgical microscope. Once the cloudy lens (i.e. cataract) has been removed, ORA analyzes the patient’s eyes, unencumbered by the cataract, which helps fine tune lens selection. This process allows verifying or making a last minute change for

the best refractive outcomes. Using ORA, 40 percent of the time, a different lens is indicated over what was pre-selected. The center tracks all outcomes and always strives to improve its service. Another procedure that can be incorporated, only at the time of cataract surgery, is the implantation of tiny, micro-invasive glaucoma stents. Without increasing surgical risk, the stents can be placed in a matter of minutes. Their benefits include a reduction in ocular pressure, with the possibility of eliminating the need for one or more glaucoma eye drop prescriptions. While Dr. Liang has been a surgeon for over 15 years, Center for Sight is a relatively new practice and invested in the latest equipment and technology to best serve their patient’s medical needs, while incorporating education with technology. “Many people believe that with advances in cataract surgery and eye care, they can throw away their glasses, forever. I work with them to see what their expectations are and what treatments they are good candidates for, since not everyone is going to benefit from every surgery or treatment available,” said Dr. Liang. For example, patients afflicted with certain diseases of the eye are not good candidates for specific lenses, such as multifocal or monovision, since they may not be compatible in certain disease states. Dr. Liang wants her patients to understand the whole health of their eyes. As for wearing glasses, Dr. Liang sees them as a tool and many people can enjoy sharper vision wearing lenses. In fact, Dr. Liang’s husband had LASIK surgery and now has 20/20 vision, but still prefers to wear glasses for even sharper vision. In the future, Dr. Liang anticipates new technology coming that may eliminate glasses for reading after the age of 40 (presbyopia). Center For Sight is preparing to add these innovative technologies to the practice upon FDA approval. Center for Sight is recognized for its diverse and highly credentialed staff of five physicians, some of whom are multilingual and others of whom have advanced nonmedical academic degrees to complement their credentials in medicine. One doctor, Ruben Salinas-Garcia, is one of only two neuro-ophthalmologist medical doctors in the state of Nevada, providing Las Vegas Valley residents with further access to an important sub-specialty service. Presently, the practice is recruiting a pediatric ophthalmologist, in order to better serve the specialty eye care needs of Las Vegas’s children. “Working cooperatively with our physicians is our support staff. They are happy to be in an environment where everyone works together with a focus of ultimate customer

service and the highest standard of care for every patient. ‘20/Happy’ is not just part of our tagline, it is truly the disposition of my entire organization, whose mission is centered on keeping our patients happy. I love what I do, and our staff and doctors do, as well. We truly care about our patients and the people we work with, which creates a healthy and happy environment—for patients, staff and physicians, alike,” commented Dr. Liang. In addition to the health of her patients and her practice, Dr. Liang is also dedicated to the well-being of her community and to the provision of ophthalmological care to those in greatest need within it. She supports Center for Sight staff as active participants in Las Vegas fundraisers, volunteer efforts and charitable initiatives benefitting the residents of Southern Nevada in various ways. For her own part, several years ago, Dr. Liang founded the Las Vegas charity, Sight for Life, which provides sight-saving eye surgery, free of charge, to qualifying

patients without the means to obtain specialty eye care. “There is no gift quite like the gift of sight, which makes Sight for Life and my role as a volunteer surgeon, benefitting those served by it, so very rewarding. After a period of relative inactivity, in the few years that I was living and working out of state, I am excited about renewing its mission and expanding services to meet the growing needs of my home town,” said Dr. Liang.

Her experience helps others get sober

A native Nevadan, Frost moved to Las Vegas 16 years ago with no intention of liking it. Since becoming sober, “I love Las Vegas, it is truly my home, and I would never be able to do what I do now anywhere else.” As the director at WestCare, Frost is responsible for women who are addicted to drugs and alcohol. Some are pregnant. Others have children whom are not in their care. A number have children who live with them onsite to aid in re-unification. The resident facility offers hope to those who have been a victim of human trafficking, have no place else to go and those who are victims of domestic violence. “I knew when I was getting sober that this is where I always meant to be,” Frost explained. “Being able to help people into a better life is a true honor; I feel the same for my staff. Cynthia Villers was the one woman who changed me, her conviction was intoxicating. She helped me build into the woman I was meant to be and to take opportunities that are given freely and grow them into my future. Seeing the change that followed her became my dream.” Professionally, Carol Renard, director of staff development for WestCare Foundation, is one of Frost’s inspirations. “Carol has educated me on every level

of life. Professionally, Carol is extremely humble yet has a great power within. She knows how to grow people and raise them into the professionals that in turn make change.” Her mother was her teacher in life. “She was one of the most humble people you could ever meet, yet commanded her world,” Frost said. “She taught me to love without judgment, care without conditions. Everyone is a teacher; who you want to be and who you do not, it is not what happened or what you did, it is how you handle it and take the high road.” Her philosophy is that the, “fear of letting go of nothing is not exclusive to me; it is inclusive of all of us. Definition of self comes from how we handle things, not what happened. Being victim is not the same as being victimized; we all have special stories, however, no one person is more special than the other. Fight for who you are, do it with grace and speak for those who cannot speak for themselves. There is nothing too far out there that you cannot have—it is how you go about it that will be remembered.” WestCare Nevada has been serving Las Vegas for over 40 years. The Women and Children’s Campus houses six programs focusing on drug and alcohol treatment for women who are pregnant and/ or parenting. These mothers have the opportunity to have their children onsite with them during treatment and also receive parenting with a child development specialist. Other programs include drug and alcohol treatment for ladies 18 and up that do not have their children with them, a women veterans homeless shelter including children, a homeless shelter for women who have been chronically homeless and a youth shelter for children ages 10-17 who have been trafficked, thrown away, runaway and homeless. WestCare Nevada also serves children in CPS custody, juvenile justice system as well as a youth detox program.

“I have seen firsthand the effect that ECF has on local students. Our scholarship recipients are from a variety of backgrounds—from being temporarily homeless, to having to care for two siblings at the age of 14—but all share one thing in common. They are passionate about a career in hospitality, but lack the financial means to do so on their own. ECF opens the door to possibility and provides invaluable guidance along the way,” Arias explained. As part of the Future Leaders of Hospitality Program, the mentors provide students with academic assistance, personal guidance and professional experience. Arias oversees every donation and fundraising event that makes the scholarships possible. It was a different path that brought Arias to ECF. “Cancer has heavily infiltrated my family. I hope my children will be fortunate enough to grow up in a time in which cancer is not only treatable, but curable, and I am an advocate to find a cure. Living so far from family, I looked for an outlet to become more involved in my community and began volunteering, which brought me to the nonprofit sector. After initially serving as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society, I was offered a job and turned my passion into a profession.” She has been living in Las Vegas for nearly a decade and is proud to call the Silver State her home. Arias has a number of mentors, “As the executive director of Epicurean Charitable Foundation of Las Vegas, I am honored to work with 25 of the most respected

hospitality and food and beverage leaders in the industry who make up the ECF board. These dedicated men and women find time in their overwhelming schedules to support the foundation’s charitable mission and serve as mentors for our city’s future industry leaders. They are not just mentors for our students, but for myself as well.” For inspiration, Arias explained, “My younger brother’s life was turned upside down when he was diagnosed with cardio-myopathy and is currently waiting for a heart transplant. His strength and determination is my inspiration, professionally and personally, to never give up and to appreciate every moment. Life is a precious gift.” In addition to her full-time job as executive director of Epicurean Charitable Foundation, she actively participates in charity runs throughout the year, benefitting organizations such as Susan G. Komen of Southern Nevada and Opportunity Village. Arias also support other organizations and programs such as Catholic Charities, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Shade Tree, Keep Memory Alive Foundation, American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society. In 2009, she founded the Young Professionals Against Cancer events so that Clark County’s aspiring young people could join in efforts to fight cancer. In her personal life, Arias said, “I have been married to my best friend and soul mate John for more than five years and we have a beautiful, energetic one-year-old daughter named Savannah. I love that every moment I spend with her is a new adventure. The best part of being a mother, in my opinion, is that with young children, every moment, their eyes light up with every new discovery. From figuring out how to sound out words, to mastering that a new gymnastics obstacle, to just playing in the house—everything is done with innocence and a sense of awe.” Arias truly demonstrates being a Fearless Female.

Pamela Humphrey Inspired to follow a different path

amela Humphrey appreciates the beauty of both fashion and numbers. A fashion designer and entrepreneur, Humphrey established Chic Geek, Inc., a custom, street gear and ready-to-wear women’s clothing line in 2012 and incorporated in 2013. She launched her women’s neck tie line, Mitye, on March 8, 2013, in honor of International Women’s Day.

As for fashion, she is inspired by Coco Chanel. “Not only was she an amazing fashion designer but she was also a fearless business woman with a great love for timeless, high-end fashion. Her trademark designer suits, handbags and little black dresses are just as popular today as they were many years ago. I can recall when I bought my first Chanel bag. I nearly broke the bank,” she said.

Later this year, at New York Fashion Week, Chic Geek will introduce its new haute couture line under Pamela Dupioni. First Lady Collection is an assemblage of silk dupioni, fine lace worthy of being labeled as haute couture and fine gemstones. It is designed for the woman who wants to feel like she is the First Lady. Humphrey is also partnering with Sears just having signed a contract to display her line in its stores throughout the United States and available for purchase online.

Her mantra is “It Takes a Village to Build an Empire,” and reached out to Leanna Jenkins, among several mentors. Jenkins is the director of the Nevada Microenterprise Initiative, which is a nonprofit organization, designed to provide entrepreneurs in the U.S. with access to affordable loans, mentoring support, educational workshops and networking opportunities. “She has been my business mentor, my grow-your-business point person and all-around cheerleader. She is a wealth of information and a Fearless Female herself.”

It was through a big life event that moved Humphrey to change her life. “I have always had a great love for fashion but my beloved fiancé, Timothy M. Ellis, passed away in June 2012 and posthumously inspired me to become a fashion designer. Before his passing, he encouraged me to return to college to become a CPA. Shortly after, he passed. I continued my coursework in accounting because I knew he would have wanted me to do so. However, one day I had this epiphany, which I contribute it to spiritual advice from Tim since his passing, that I should change the course of my life and do what I have always dreamed of doing.” She began her company and showcased her ready-to-wear clothing line during Fashion Week Las Vegas in 2014. Born in Birmingham and raised in Los Angeles, she relocated with her family to Las Vegas in 1996. Working in government for over 14 years, Humphrey loved her job but knew there was something missing but didn’t know what and admitted to spending countless hours shopping. Now she spends her days designing and is truly fulfilled.

Humphrey believes in giving back and has raised money for the United Way and Three Square. This year, her company will be hosting its inaugural program, Fairy Godmother, where young female teens will participate in a contest to win a makeover for prom night. All teenagers are encouraged to participate because Humphrey believes in beauty in everyone. She has two sons, with her older son, Steven, following in her footsteps as an entrepreneur and her younger son, Gregory, pursuing an undergraduate’s degree at University of Nevada, Las Vegas. “My personal inspiration is the love I have for my two beautiful granddaughters. They will be wearing my designs in the future. My older granddaughter, Mariah, is 5 years old. She fell in love with fashion when she was a baby. She has been playing dress up since she was a year old and has grown into such a fashion diva. They are my legacy.” Pamela Humphrey is also leaving a legacy as a Fearless Female.

have read statistics say that by the time we all reach the age of 65, 2 out of 3 of us will end up flat broke. Those same statistics also say that if we start a business, 90 percent of us will fail within one to five years. This means that the odds are stacked against all of us when it comes to achieving financial success. Blaming and excuses is the recipe that losers use to fail, but those who succeed are the stories of persistence and determination against the obstacles that are natural to any worthwhile endeavor. LIFE IN Bloom

F

or many people spring means gardening and cleaning. But for me, spring is something much more—it is a time of blossoming and renewal, which is why this is my favorite season. There is a connection between gardening and blossoming, cleaning and renewal. Those words shouldn’t be thought of as chores, but as empowering ways to make your life better.

Growing your vegetable garden can be empowering and healthy and, talk about farm to table, it can save money. Cultivating flowers is really the heart and soul of springtime. Every time I see a bit of green breaking the soil, I see a rose open up, I see a desert flower bloom; it reminds me of how anything and everything can always have a fresh start. If we’re going to have a fresh new start, if we’re going to have a renewal, then we need to get rid of the old. This brings me to spring cleaning. It can keep you healthy as you remove allergens or bacteria from your environment. It can also keep you sane because you finally have an opportunity to organize after the holiday chaos. Another bonus to spring cleaning is that chance to shed unneeded items from your home. You can hold a garage sale to earn a little extra cash, or donate items to an organization that can help people or animals in need. To carry this metaphor a bit further, just as important as seeing flowers blossom and to renew by cleaning out the old in the house is to take time this spring to blossom and renew as a person and to shed what is old and not needed. In 2015 I’ve had my own chance to blossom. A few months ago I took over as president of my husband’s businesses, which has allowed me to truly grow in my own right. I believe that to experience real growth, to truly blossom, you must step out of your comfort zone. For me that was taking over his businesses. But regardless of whatever choices any of us face, I feel spring is the time to be inspired to make needed life changes and to renew oneself. In my new role I’m renewing Terry’s businesses. We made changes, got rid of the old that what wasn’t working well, kept and refreshed what works and are adding new innovative ideas. Whether you are a career woman, a mom taking care of her family or a woman doing some combination of both, spring is the time for change. Renewal could refer to something as drastic as a career move or it could just mean picking up that hobby that you felt you

had to leave behind. Ask yourself: what you are passionate about in life. I decided I was passionate about dogs, so I interned at Heaven Can Wait Animal Society and did a study on who donates to animal charities. My culture is also important to me, so I have connected back to my younger days doing hula. So in summary, you can blossom by renewing yourself. This spring is the time to ensure that ten years from now you do not look back at your choices and wish you had followed your passions. Now is the time. Pick up that old guitar or camera. Volunteer for a cause that you are passionate about. Remind yourself

about what you want your life to be about and make it happen…now.

Walk us through a typical day in your shoes. My day depends on what project I will work on. Because I love mornings, my day begins fairly early, usually around 7 a.m. There’s coffee and “The Today Show.” My wife, Christine, is not a morning person. She will make her appearance an hour or so later. I have to be very quiet until she has finished her first cup of coffee. Then we coordinate our day. I love projects and working with my hands. Some days I do things that pertain to show business, music and my performance. On other days, I may go to Home Depot for supplies I need to repair something around the house. I may meet a friend for lunch or shop at the Guitar Center. Christine and I almost always have dinner together and later catch up on some of our favorite TV shows, in what is known as the Man Cave. There’s usually lots of popcorn and cabernet. Then sleep comes easily!

Have you ever purchased any As Seen on TV items? I used to buy everything I saw on TV and then I found out there was a store for just the things I’ve seen on TV. I had to cut myself off. The most recent item I bought is the hose that shrinks. I couldn’t help it; I bought two of them! I’m quirky in that I buy something but don’t use it immediately. I like to just have them around awhile. I still haven’t used those hoses.

If you could destroy a grade-school photo of yourself, what year would it be and why? That would be second or third grade. I was missing some teeth; it was not a good time for me.

While grocery shopping, what is your stick-in-the-cartwhen-no-one-is-looking item? That would be anything that contains carbs: bagels, doughnuts, chocolate chip cookies.

My musical tastes vary. I’m from Missouri and grew up listening to my father sing gospel and country music. But I’m also a product of the Beatles, Motown, James Brown and Tom Jones. My kids bring me mp3s of new songs and, many times, I go to my library and pull up the original recording that the sample came from. I love Earth, Wind and Fire and Bruno Mars.

I make it a point to attend as many of the shows here as possible. Many of my friends are either headliners or performing in shows; we all have to support each other.

What do you do to unwind and relax? I love my music, whether it’s playing the guitar or simply listening to it. I also love to play Ping-Pong. It takes my mind off everything and I just enjoy it, and making fun of the person on the other side of the table.

Does anyone ever mistake you for someone else? Yes, Tony Bennett! Just kidding! No, I don’t have that happen. I’ve had people tell me they’ve seen me before, but can’t remember where. I jokingly say, maybe the post office? Earl Turner is a multi-talented singer, songwriter, musician, dancer and actor and inductee into the New Orleans Music Hall of Fame.
