Sin embargo, cuesta imaginar cómo ese suave movimiento se traduce, en el interior del capacete del molino, en una poderosa tracción que hace girar, entre crujidos de madera y el rumor sordo y continuo de la molienda, dos enormes piedras que juntas pueden pesar más de una tonelada.

El camino que sigue el grano tostado comienza en la tolva y la canaleja, de donde se deja caer gradualmente entre las piedras que van triturando y desplazando el producto hacia la parte exterior de las paredes de la balsa o harinal. Finalmente, el grano molido cae, pasando por el cajón, hasta un saco o costal que en la molina se encuentra a los pies de la maquinaria y en el molino puede estar en el piso intermedio del edificio. Los molinos y molinas se controlan utilizando la palanca de freno, que cuenta con una pletina metálica que presio-

El molinero, en ocasiones, sólo con una grúa manual o ayudado por sus hijos o aprendices, debía desmontar parcialmente cada cierto tiempo la maquinaria de molienda para el picado de las piedras. Con un martillo y un cincel, los maestros devolvían la rugosidad a las piedras molineras antes de volver a montar la maquinaria. Las características de la molina, que se encuentra en un habitáculo más amplio y cuya maquinara no está tan ligada a la estructura como en el caso del molino, facilitaban esta operación.

Seguro que la habéis visto por casi todos los sopts de la isla, surfeando con un estilo perfecto, enérgico, arriesgado y delicado a la vez. Esta rubia —que puedes encontrarte surfeando en bikini, incluso entrado el invierno—, llegó a Fuerteventura cuando sólo era un bebé, y aún recuerda el polvo que levantaba el Daihatsu Jeep de alquiler de su padre, al recorrer la carretera del norte en busca de olas y viento. Macaronesia: ¿Cómo llegas a Fuerteventura? Sonni: De pequeña, como mi padre era windsurfista profesional —Jürgen Hönscheid— , viajábamos toda la familia alrededor del mundo para acompañarle. Estuvimos mucho tiempo en Hawai, pero al final mis padres decidieron venir a vivir a Fuerteventura; más cerca de nuestra familia de Alemania, con condiciones muy parecidas a Hawai, buena gente, olas todo el año y agua caliente. Vivíamos justo enfrente del mar, a 4 pasos del agua, y esto es algo que hoy seguimos apreciando como si fuera el primer día. M: ¿Cuándo empiezas con los deportes acuáticos? S: Ya desde muy pequeña me tiraba con el boggie y empecé a hacer windsurf a los 12 años. Después dejé un poco de lado el deporte de agua y me concentré en el tenis. Hasta que un día, con 14 años, vi a una chica en bikini bajándose una ola en una tabla de surf, y me dejó tan impresionada que empecé a surfear. Mi padre nunca nos hizo presión con el deporte, siempre nos ofreció llevarnos a surfear pero nunca nos obligó. La ansiedad por separación es uno de los problemas más frecuentes en los perros, provocando en ellos un grado de estrés y malestar muy elevado.

The separation anxiety disorder is one of the most usual problems in dogs, causing them a high degree of stress and a deep sense of unease.

Este tipo de conducta se produce cuando el animal se queda solo y no tiene acceso a sus propietarios. Muestra uno o varios de los siguientes síntomas:

This kind of behaviour takes place when the animal is left on its own and its owners are not at home. One or several of the following symptoms can be observed:

El pronóstico de la ansiedad por separación suele ser bueno, siempre y cuando haya colaboración por parte de los dueños, que el problema no sea crónico y que el perro no sufra de otros problemas. Dejar la televisión encendida, castigar al animal o adoptar otra mascota no son los mecanismos adecuados para solventar el problema. Se debe ignorar la conducta ansiosa del perro y premiarlo cuando esté calmado, así como cambiar todos los malos hábitos que existan en el hogar. Lo mejor sería acudir a un adiestrador o etólogo, entendido en la materia, que le asesore y le guíe en la modificación de la conducta.

The prognosis of separation anxiety disorder is usually good, provided the masters cooperate, the problem is not chronic and the dog isn’t suffering from other kinds of disorders. Leaving the TV on, punishing the dog or adopting another pet is not the way of solving the problem. The dog’s anxious behaviour must be ignored, and however you must reward it when it’s calmed, as well as change all the bad habits at home. The best thing to do would be to turn to a trainer or ethologist, expert in this matter, who can advise and guide us to get a change in its behaviour. 19.

.plantas medicinales I Las plantas medicinales han sido, desde los mismos inicios de la humanidad, las mejores aliadas de la salud del ser humano. La observación metódica, la experimentación y la transmisión oral y escrita han permitido el reconocimiento, la selección y la pervivencia del uso de las plantas medicinales en casi todas las culturas y continentes. Los primeros escritos sobre plantas medicinales tienen una antigüedad de cerca de cinco mil años y están recogidos en tablillas de arcilla, grabadas por los sumerios.

Parte del secreto de que los animales que pastan libremente en praderas y montañas no padezcan tantos trastornos como sus primos encerrados en granjas, se debe quizás a que los animales libres, además de vivir más placidamente y comer hierbas nutritivas, consumen grandes cantidades de hierbas medicinales que crecen junto al forraje o en los márgenes de los prados. Existen una serie de plantas que ponen a nuestro alcance remedios sencillos y efectivos para buena parte de los trastornos más comunes que sufrimos. Algunas de ellas las utilizamos como condimentos de cocina, otras para hacer infusiones, vahos, cataplasmas… A parte de sus propiedades medicinales, algunas son preciosas plantas ornamentales, por el bonito color de sus flores, el verdor de sus hojas y el agradable aroma que algunas desprenden.

La fitoterapia es el estudio de las propiedades curativas de las plantas. Una de sus principales ventajas es la nula o escasa presencia de efectos secundarios que tiene el consumo de las mismas —algo muy perjudicial y corriente en la medicina farmacoquímica—. La mayoría de las plantas medicinales no suele exigir más precaución que su uso en las dosis recomendadas. Lo más interesante es la acción que estas plantas provocan en el organismo, al estimular las defensas y los sistemas naturales de autocuración o autorregeneración del propio cuerpo, supliendo ciertas carencias biológicas. Existen una serie de plantas, llamadas condimentarias, que utilizamos normalmente para la elaboración de nuestros platos culinarios, y que también poseen propiedades medicinales. A continuación hablaremos de algunas de ellas y en el próximo mes de Macaronesia publicaremos un listado con las propiedades y usos de las que conocemos como plantas medicinales.

.medicinal herbs Medicinal herbs have been, since the beginning of humanity, the best allies for the humans’ health. Methodical observation, experimentation, oral and written history have allowed the acknowledgement, selection and survival of the use of medicinal herbs in almost every culture and continent. The first records about medicinal herbs are almost five thousand years old, and they are in the shape of clay tablets, engraved by Sumerians. The reason why animals grazing freely in the meadows and mountains don’t suffer from as many disorders as their relatives confined in farms is maybe because free animals, besides living peacefully and taking nutritional herbs, also take a great deal of medicinal herbs that grow beside the forage crop at the borders of the meadows. There is a series of herbs that provide us easy and effective remedies for a great deal of the most common disorders we suffer from. We use some of them as seasoning; some others, as infusions, inhalations, poultice… Apart from their medical properties, some of them are beautiful ornamental plants due to the nice colour of their flowers, the greenness of their leaves and the pleasant scent some of them give off. Phytotherapy is the study of the healing properties of herbs. One of their main advantages is the absence or scarcity of side effects derived from their consumption —something very damaging and common in medicine based on pharmaceutical chemistry—. Most medicinal herbs don’t usually require taking precautions other than not exceeding the prescribed dose. The most interesting point is the effects that these herbs have on our organism, stimulating our immune system, and self-healing natural systems our own body has, making up for some biological deficiencies. There are some seasoning herbs we use in the elaboration of our culinary dishes and which also have healing properties. Below we will tell you about some of them, and in Macaronesia’s next issue we’ll publish a list of the properties and uses of the herbs we know as medicinal.

Ajo

Diurético, expectorante y estimulante. Remedio natural que se utiliza para el asma, la tos, dificultades respiratorias, bronquitis, tuberculosis... Ayuda a reducir los riesgos de contraer cáncer por sus contenidos antioxidantes. Es antiinflamatorio, anticoagulante, vasodilatador y depurador. Es un antibiótico natural.

Se utiliza el bulbo de la planta, mejor quitándole la semilla interior para evitar digestiones pesadas y mal olor. Se recomienda tomar en crudo para mantener todas sus propiedades.

Garlic

Diuretic, expectorant and stimulating. Natural remedy against asthma, cough, breathing difficulties, bronchitis, tuberculosis… Its antioxidant contents help to reduce the risk of contracting cancer. It's anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant, vasodilator and purifying. It's a natural antibiotic.

The bulb of the plant is used, better taking out the inside seed to avoid hard digestions and bad breath. To keep all its properties it's advisable to have it raw.

Apio

Diuréticas (expulsión de líquidos), antirreumáticas, relajantes (en caso de insomnio), aperitivas (estimulante del apetito), tonificantes y dietéticas.

Celery

Borraja

Sudoríficas (en infusión), emolientes (ablanda tejidos inflamados), aperitivas, cardiovasculares, síndrome premenstrual, buen estado de la piel, expectorantes, descongestivas, calmantes, depurativas, diuréticas, refrescantes, y antiinflamatorias (en vías urinarias).

Semillas, para obtener el aceite de borraja. También se utilizan las hojas y flores en infusiones y preparación de vinos. No aconsejada en el embarazo.

Borage

Sudorific (as infusion), emollient (it softens inflamed tissues), appetizer, cardiovascular, premenstrual syndrome, skin care, expectorant, decongestant, painkiller, purifying, diuretic, refreshing and anti-inflammatory (urinary tracts).

Seeds, to obtain borage oil. Leaves and flowers are also used as infusions and in wine manufactue. Not recomended for pregnancy.

Parsley

Laurel

Usado en caso de inapetencia, espasmos gastrointestinales, bronquitis crónicas, enfisema, asma, faringitis, sinusitis y dermatitis. El aceite esencial es empleado como analgésico en el dolor reumático.

Bayleaf

Used for lack of appetite, gastrointestinal spasms, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, asthma, pharyngitis, sinusitis and dermatitis. The essential oil is used as a painkiller against rheumatism.

Antisépticas, antiespasmódicas, aperitivas, carminativas, diuréticas, emenagogas (favorecen flujo menstrual), expectorantes, estimulantes, tónicas y estomacales.

Oregano and Marjoram

Situada entre las tristemente conocidas Ruanda y Congo, en Uganda la sabana africana, llena de leones, jirafas y esos bichos enormes con trompa, se transforma en un paisaje montañoso, húmedo y completamente verde. La llegada a su capital recuerda a otros países africanos, Nairobi, Maputo, Antananarive, Kampala, diferentes nombres para el mismo caos urbano en el que miles de infraviviendas rodean un centro que recuerda a alguna capital occidental después de un bombardeo. tallar madera Marcos José Martínez García

Hace más de 20 años empezó su formación en ebanistería y tallado. Desde entonces llevó una tienda de manualidades y bellas artes, impartió cursos de iniciación a la talla de la madera y finalmente descubrió que prefería una vida más bohemia y sin horarios fijos, así que se lanzó —junto con su compañera Marlene— a la aventura de los mercados artesanales. Hoy, orgulloso de su trayectoria, Marcos vive al ritmo de sus días en el pueblecito de Lajares, y vende sus piezas de artesanía en mercados como el del C.C. El Campanario, el de Lajares y en las tiendas de artesanía del Cabildo. ¿Cómo te defines a ti mismo? Soy maestro artesano, tallador de madera, pero ante todo me considero un reciclador extremo; de todo se puede sacar algo, todo sirve. ¿Y cómo defines el trabajar la madera? La madera tiene unas vetas que hay que respetar y, al principio cuando no tienes mucha experiencia, es muy difícil cogerle el punto exacto y haces muchos destrozos. Pero una vez que sabes cómo funciona es dejarte fluir con ella. ¿Qué madera prefieres? Mi madera preferida es el nogal, porque es muy densa y casi no tiene vetas, por lo que puedes tallar en todas las direcciones; pero tallo en todo tipo de maderas. Cuando estudié talla me dijeron que sólo se puede tallar en maderas nobles, si quieres que tu obra perdure en el tiempo, pero eso no es verdad. Lo que dura tu obra también depende mucho del cuidado que le dé su dueño, así que si trata bien la pieza no importa que la hayas hecho en pino. ¿De dónde sacas tus materiales? vertederos, recortes de obra, punto limpio, lo que trae el mar… Es trabajoso, porque hay que limpiar bien esas maderas de barnices, clavos y demás objetos. Eso sí, son necesarias unas buenas herramientas y que estén muy bien afiladas. Algunas las he traído incluso de Sheffield, ciudad inglesa famosa en el mundo entero por la calidad de .24

Con los años he adquirido soltura y rapidez en la talla, y ahora le dedico mucho más tiempo a un acabado perfecto, un pulido casi impecable. El público aquí es diferente que en el norte de la península, piden maderas más claras y no son tan puristas, por lo que me da juego a la hora de innovar con pigmentos acrílicos; mezclar con otros materiales como conchas, piedras… El acabado suelo hacerlo con cera, aunque últimamente he estado usando barnices para pulseras y colgantes. ¿Qué piezas fabricas? Tallo de todo: cuencos, cucharas, cajas, llaveros, colgantes, castañuelas, percheros, cuelgallaves, marcos, bancos… Y me gustan las simbologías de todas las culturas, así que dibujo un poco de todo. ¿Qué has hecho últimamente que te apasione? He estado trabajando con unas restauradoras, restaurando el Púlpito de la Iglesia de la Oliva; también en la Catedral de Betancuria y el la Iglesia de Tetir. Me encanta la restauración, es todo un reto reproducir algo tal como fue; por ejemplo, en la Iglesia de Tetir tuve que restaurar los dedos de Santo Domingo de Guzmán. En estos trabajos tienes que imaginarte la posición que tendrían esos dedos y

darles la proporción correcta con los otros dedos, con las uñas… Es mucha satisfacción ver un trabajo de este tipo acabado, aunque nadie se dé cuenta. Tu sueño como restaurador… Que me encargasen restaurar la Virgen de Covadonga. Gracias Marcos por la belleza de tu arte, que nos enseña a darle el valor que merecen las obras artesanales, y por alentarnos a reutilizar, en este mundo de consumo desbordado.

.the of wood carving: Marcos José Martínez García He started his training in cabinetmaking and carving more than 20 years ago. He has run a handicrafts and fine arts shop, taught courses of carving for beginners, but he finally found out that he preferred a more bohemian kind of life, with no fixed timetables, so he decided to embrace the adventure —together with Marlén, his partner— of craft markets. Nowadays, proud of his career, Marcos is living at his own pace in the small village of Lajares, and he sells his own handicrafts in markets such as the C.C. El Campanario, the one in Lajares and also in the inter-island council’s crafts shops. How would you define yourself? I’m a master craftsman, a wood carver, but most of all I consider myself an extreme recycler; you can take something out of anything, everything is useful. And how would you define wood carving? Wood has some streaks you must respect and, at the beginning, when you don’t have much experience, it’s very difficult to get the hang of it, and you spoil a lot of wood, but once you learn the ropes you just have to let yourself go. Which kind of wood do you prefer? My favourite wood is walnut, because it’s very thick and you hardly find streaks in it, so you can carve in any direction; however I carve any kind of wood. When I was a carving trainee I was told you can only carve fine woods, if you want your work to last for a long time, but this isn’t true. How long your work lasts also depends on how much its owner cares for it, so if you take care of it…It doesn’t matter if you carve pine. Where do you take your materials from? Dumps, debris, clean points, or from the sea… It’s very laborious because you have to remove the varnish, nails and other objects from the wood. You need good sharp tools. I have brought some of them from Sheffield, an English city which is famous in the whole world for the quality of its steel. Robin Hood’s sword was said to be made there. How has your technique developed? It’s getting simpler and simpler. With experience I have also acquired agility and speed, and now I devote more time to getting a perfect finish and an almost impeccable polish. The people here are different from those in the north of the peninsula. Here they ask for lighter wood and they aren’t so purist, so this gives me the chance to make innovations in acrylic pigments, mixing them with other materials such as shells, stones… I usually finish with wax, though lately I’ve been using varnish for bracelets and necklaces. Which kind of pieces do you make? I carve everything: bowls, spoons, boxes, key rings, necklaces, castanets, coat racks, key hangers, frames, benches… and I like symbols from every culture, so I carve any kind of drawings. What have you done lately that fascinates you? I have been working with some restorers, and we’ve been restoring the pulpit in La Oliva’s church, and also in Betancuria’s cathedral and Tetir’s church. I love restoration, it’s a real challenge to reproduce something as it originally was; for example, in Tetir’s church I had to reproduce Santo Domingo de Guzmán’s fingers. At those works you have to imagine the position of those fingers and give them the right proportion considering the rest of the fingers, their nails… It brings you a great satisfaction to see a work like this finished, although nobody realizes it. Dan Snaith, un canadiense de 32 años Dr. en matemáticas, nos deja su tercer trabajo con su formación Caribou: Swim. Rodeado de músicos muy experimentados (The Flaming Lips, Four Tet, Sun Ra...) y de un equipo de producción excelente, Caribou nos regala esta maravilla de disco llenísimo de detalles y matices hasta ahora inéditos en el panorama independiente de la música electrónica, ¡por fin aire fresco! Como dijo Snaith a la BBC, «Quiero hacer música bailable que suene más a agua que a metal…», toda una declaración de intenciones de este genio de la música cerebral. Los arreglos orquestales, interludes y acompañamientos son de una calidad tremenda, las voces, los ecos... todo un manual de cómo se deben hacer temas buenos, sencillos pero profundos y muy efectivos. El disco suena como a envuelto en una especie de aire etéreo y sofisticado; consiguen un sonido único y original, lleno de guiños y referencias a los clásicos del primer trance o incluso del acidhouse, sin llegar a caer en el oportunismo y sin haberse vendido al mainstream. Tienen estupendos momentos «Everything but the girl» o incluso «Imagination» (a ver quién se acuerda…), hasta un poco St. Germain o Cut Copy pero muy muy mejorados, más profundos. Pues eso, que se puede hacer música bailable de alta calidad, evocadora de otras épocas, pero sin perder la originalidad ni caer en el refrito. Muchos grupos deberían de tomar nota de estos fenómenos, ¡menos ruido y más nueces, por favor! Un gran disco; valiente e inspiradísimo, terapia para los oídos y el cerebro.

This record was released in 2010, but it’s worth commenting on, it’s a real jewel. Dan Snaith, a thirty-two-year-old Canadian, doctor of Maths, leaves us his third work with Caribou: Swim. Surrounded by expert musicians (The Flaming Lips, Four Tet, Sun Ra, etc..) and by an excellent production team, Caribou gives us this wonderful record, full of unprecedented details, tempo and dynamics in the panorama of independent electronic music; fresh air, at last… As Snaith said to the BBC, «I want to make dance music, which sounds more like water than metal», a real good-will statement by this genius of cerebral music. . The record opens with Odessa, a perfect example of his intentions; the next theme, Sun, is a wonder, an authentic «concentrate» of dance atmosphere for nostalgic people, cleverly distilled… even the fantastic «Found out» or the closing theme, «Jamelia», a gorgeous song… in other words, a fantastic record, well cared for from beginning to
