Manuel Velázquez Cabrera nació en el pueblo de Tiscamanita, Fuerteventura, el 11 de noviembre de 1863. Cuando tenía sólo 3 años, su madre falleció y quedó al único cuidado de su padre, un próspero comerciante que se enriqueció con el negocio de la cochinilla. Manuel pasó su infancia asistiendo a las escuelas

Al llegar los dos muchachos a Montevideo, les sorprende la noticia de que su padre había fallecido, varias semanas antes, de manera inesperada.

La disfunción cognitiva es un trastorno que pueden presentar los perros de edad avanzada. Se trata de una degeneración en el sistema nervioso central que provoca cambios de comportamiento y alteración en las habilidades cognitivas.
The cognitive dysfunction is a disorder that affects advanced age dogs. It’s a degeneration of the central nervous system which causes behaviour changes and a disorder of the cognitive abilities.
Para hacerse una mejor idea, podemos decir que presenta cierta similitud con el Alzheimer en humanos. Algunos de los signos que puede presentar un perro con SDC son: — Eliminación inadecuada (el perro orina y defeca en casa) — Desorientación — Alteraciones en el sueño — Disminución o cambio de las interacciones con el dueño y otros animales — Pérdida de actividad — Confusión en hábitos simples rutinarios — Nuevos miedos o ansiedades hacia cosas conocidas — Problemas para realizar órdenes ya aprendidas Se diagnostica realizando un examen neurológico y un análisis completo, así como una recopilación de las pautas de comportamiento para descartar que no se trate de otro tipo de enfermedad o de un problema de conducta. La disfunción cognitiva no tiene cura, pero podemos ralentizar los síntomas y frenar el proceso con un tratamiento a base de medicación, una dieta especial y siguiendo unas pautas de relación con nuestro perro. Podemos prevenir este síndrome complementando su alimentación con alimentos antioxidantes, dándole un estilo de vida rico en estímulos y hacerlo «pensar» y trabajar mediante ejercicios en positivo. No debemos confundir el SDC con la ansiedad por separación, ya que presentan síntomas parecidos. La ansiedad por separación puede aparecer a cualquier edad.
To better understand it, we could say that it’s similar to Alzheimer in human beings. Some of the symptoms presented by a dog suffering from CDS are: — They relieve themselves in the wrong place (inside the house) — They appear lost and confused even in familiar surroundings — Sleep changes — Change in their interactions (usually less interactions) with the owner or with other animals — Activity loss — Confusion in simple daily habits — New fears and anxieties caused by already known things — Problems to obey already learnt commands It can be diagnosed by a neurologic test and a complete check-up. Norms of behaviour must also be compiled so as to rule out any other kind of disease or a behaviour issue. CDS cannot be cured but its symptoms can be slowed down and the process can be held back with medication, a special diet and following some rules in the relationship with our dog. We can prevent this syndrome with food supplements such as antioxidants, providing a life style rich in stimuli, making them think and work in a positive way by means of exercises. We mustn’t mistake CDS for the separation anxiety disorder, as the symptoms are very similar. The separation anxiety disorder can appear at any age.

Simple mente timple I Ondulaba en contoneo la madera por dar la nota y, en un tiempo indefinido, sin principio, decidió poner manos a la obra de sonar por todos lados: en el calor de Pakistán, en las corrientes del Níger, en los altos de Italia, en los llanos de Cuba, en la estepas de Malí, en ríos de Hungría, en vaguadas de Guinea, en levantes de España, en altiplanos de Perú, en barrancos y orillas, aquí y allá. Aquí y allá reunió hijos y padres con voz de guitarros, cuatros, mandolas, charangos, discantes, tingolotangos, rebabs, batentes, vihuelas, cabacos… Cuando despertó de la borrachera de sonido, de los sueños moldeados en cien formas onduladas, estaba en una isla y entre los brazos llevaba un timple. II Se nos otorgó los dones que se conceden a los pueblos sólo cuando nacen distintos: se nos dio islas para que nos reconociéramos hermanos de viaje; el mar se nos dio, el mar para que rodásemos por el tiempo con sus puertas abiertas; también se nos dio el timple para que, sencillamente, nos enseñara a pisar sobre nuestra propia huella, una y otra vez, sobre nuestra propia huella. III Antes de que el primer conquistador se marchara para siempre, fue a su país y trajo a mucha de su gente para que colonizaran las islas. La víspera de su despedida
reunió a pobladores de siempre junto a los nuevos colonos. Uno de los nativos quedó alelado por algo totalmente nuevo: el sonido de instrumentos musicales. Tras de oír dijo: «En vano han sido todas nuestras batallas; nos habríamos dejado conquistar con tu música». IV No hace mucho, ya desaparecidos Chano Flores el Puntal y Carmela la Cantarina, la única hija de ambos, Engracia la Jaldúa, pidió que se le concediera todas las artes de sus padres. La diosa Fortuna no sólo no la escuchó sino que se dedicó a repartir entre las islas, con abundancia, como quien siembra, las facultades y el talento de aquellos folcloristas muertos: aquí retazos de cantos, allá tonadas de siempre, aquí sabor a folías, allá voces parranderas; aquí y allá ecos y más ecos y más ecos aún, espléndidamente. Cuentan que, sin embargo, sólo llorando pudo la diosa desprenderse del timple. V Cuentan que en las primeras incursiones a las islas, los conquistadores persiguieron a tres nativos, y que estos acabaron por esconderse lo mejor que pudieron. Una mujer, de entre ellos, en su afán de libertad, asió con tal fuerza la cara de su hijo que, para que no los delatase, sin querer, lo asfixió.
Es la historia de casi todos los pueblos: la de sus esfuerzos por convertirse en lo que no pudieron llegar a ser. De ahí, cuántas tonadas asidas pero, también, cuántos cantares olvidados, cuántas coplas asfixiadas. Y, sin embargo, cuántos cantos para rehacernos de lo truncado. Cuántas vidas las de nuestro único hijo: el timple. VI Hay todo un diálogo entre labores marineras y campesinas, entre coplas de orilla e interior, entre rumores de belillos al antojo de las olas y silbidos del viento atravesando paredes de piedra, entre bridas y jarcias, sogas y tajarrias, cabos y atillos, rabizas y correas, vergas y tomizas… Cuerdas dispuestas, alineadas, como surcos y estelas, tonadillas anudadas: rumor del timple que nos vive y guía. VII Parece que estemos hablando de nuestras tonadas, ritmos únicos, reflejos de otros ecos combatientes. Combatiente, Nenedán, se trasladó de lugar, según se cuenta, por deshacer agravios. Se retiró salvaje, a un lugar al que sólo se podía acceder por mar; así vivió, más que nadie, aislado y solo. Así vive, hecho memoria. Parece que estemos hablando de tiemple. Parece que hayamos hablado del timple.

A pesar de su pronta emancipación de esta Isla, Marcos, natural de Puerto del Rosario, siempre llevó muy dentro las raíces de su pueblo majorero. Se licenció en Filología Inglesa, en la Universidad de La Laguna, fue profesor de Enseñanzas Medias durante siete años y actualmente lo es de la Escuela Oficial de Idiomas. Es poeta, escritor, traductor y —como buen majorero, incapaz de negarse a los impulsos vitales que le remueven por dentro— gran improvisador y parrandero. Entre todas estas artes, ¿por cuál te decantas? Aunque me da un poco de pudor la palabra poeta, si en alguna faceta me gustaría que se reconociera lo que hago sería en la «poesía culta». No desdeño la poesía popular, es más, creo que un poeta que se considere culto y moderno debe manejar las herramientas de la poesía tradicional. Así en «Poemas de Pe a Paz» —poemas de mis tardíos años 20, los que considero mis primeros poemas aprovechables—, me metí de cabeza en la modernidad de aquel entonces; pero en el siguiente libro que publiqué, «De Sobredumbres» —dedicado a Fuerteventura—, di un paso atrás y demostré que dominaba las estructuras tradicionales. ¿Cuándo empieza tu afición por las letras?, ¿cuándo te decides a publicar? Me recuerdo de niño escribiendo en una libretita azul, mis poemas de infancia. La he buscado por todos lados, pero no logro encontrarla. Los poemas que publico con 33 años corresponden ya a la época tardía (mis 26-27). Tuve la suerte de coincidir, en un centro de enseñanza, con el poeta Eugenio Padorno y me atreví a enseñárselos; él me dio la fuerza para publicarlos. Pedro Lezcano, un tótem de la Literatura Canaria, también me animó a hacerlo. Desde entonces, cada cierto tiempo publico algo; de entrada, con intención de hacerme nombre —Don Miguel de Unamuno decía «Literatura es ansias de inmortalidad»— y ahora por puro impulso vital. Háblanos de la evolución de la Fuerteventura de tu infancia hasta la de hoy En el año 57 Fuerteventura estaba muy cerca del tercermundismo. Eran los últimos retazos de la Fuerteventura tradicional. Todavía existían alabarderos, latoneros, personas dedicadas a la cestería, a la agricultura… Era un sector prácticamente primario, de subsistencia. Recuerdo una infancia de muchas carencias, por un lado, pero por otro, me vienen a la cabeza manifestaciones culturales muy propias, que el pueblo celebraba con gran énfasis, debido a que esas sociedades formaban prácticamente una endogamia cultural. En los años 60 hay un salto cualitativo, empieza el turismo.
Los 70 son un disloque, y de ahí en adelante se intentó hacer en 30 años lo que debería haberse hecho en 200. No hubo transición, pasamos como quien dice, «de la alpargata al ordenador». Desde mi punto de vista, lo que necesitaba Fuerteventura era una especie de moratoria como la que nos está sucediendo. Mi obra «De Sobredumbres» es un poemario que explica las soledades históricas, atmosféricas y geográficas de nuestra Isla. Está dividido en 3 partes, en las que intento explicar precisamente esta evolución, y me aventuro a dar una visión futura que aboga por la mesura. Tu opinión sobre la transmisión de la cultura. La cultura desaparece cuando desaparece el medio en el que se mueve. Antes había Cultura Religiosa y existían los Ranchos de Ánimas; había una Cultura de Labor, con un canto para el momento en que se araba, otro cuando se recogían las mieses, otro cuando se descamisaba el millo… Al desaparecer la función social van desapareciendo las manifestaciones culturales que la acompañaban. Sin embargo, seguimos teniendo fiestas y ahí es donde el folclore festivo se mantiene, conservando este tipo de cultura. El folclore seguirá vivo, porque en lo festivo se manifiesta lo que es innato a las personas de una localidad, y esta forma de cultura de la Isla no necesita promoción, evoluciona naturalmente. He conocido a grandes parranderos —no podría nombrarlos a todos—, que entienden el folclore de forma innata y de forma innata lo han transmitido y lo han engrandecido. ¿Tu relación con el mundo del folclore y la parranda? Tenía 15 años y veía una parranda y se me iba el oído. Me acuerdo de cómo me fijaba en parranderos viejos cuando tocaban la guitarra. Yo no tenía, pero me aprendía los acordes y los ensayaba en el antebrazo, gastando la camisa del roce de los dedos. En el folclore está todo el mundo literario oral de la tradición majorera. En las coplas majoreras te encuentras a Góngora y a Quevedo, Quintillas, Sextillas, Liras... La Folía, que guarda la estructura de una décima, desaparece en todo el mundo cultural hispano menos en Canarias, y son Folías del siglo XV. La Redondilla, el Romance…, hay verdaderas joyas cantadas en el folclore, donde la literatura culta ha pasado al pueblo, y éste se ha encargado de mantenerla. Así, en Canarias tenemos unas 70 tonadas diferentes, entre canciones y ritmos populares. Eso es una riqueza inmaterial impresionante, escarbas un poco y encuentras cinco siglos de tradición. Gracias Marcos, por dedicarnos tu tiempo y por acercarnos un poco más, con tus saberes, a esta Fuerteventura que habitamos.
Despite having left this island at a very early age, Marcos, born in Puerto del Rosario, always carried deep inside the roots of his majorera village. He’s a poet, a writer and a translator and —as a good majorero, unable to stop the vital impulse that vibrates inside— a good improviser and folk lover. Among all these arts, which one do you go for? Although the word «poet» makes me feel a bit shy, if there is a field where I’d like my works to be recognized it would be within highbrow poetry. I don’t disdain popular poetry, on the contrary I think that any poets that consider themselves as highbrow modern poets must master the tools of popular poetry. So in «Poemas de Pe a Paz» —poems belonging to my late 20’s, the ones I consider to be my first worthwhile poems— I plunged into the modernity of those times; but in the next book I published, «De Sobredumbres» —dedicated to Fuerteventura—, I took one step backwards and I proved I mastered the popular poetry. When did your interest in arts arise? When did you decide to publish your Works? I remember writing on a little blue notebook when I was a child, my childhood poems. I have been looking for it everywhere, but I can’t find it. The poems I published when I was 33 belong to a later period in my life (26, 27 years old). I was lucky to meet the poet Eugenio Padorno in a teaching centre, and I dared to show him my poems. He gave me strength to publish them. Pedro Lezcano, a totem of Canarian Literature, encouraged me too. It was the last remains of traditional Fuerteventura. Halberdiers, panel beaters, people dedicated to basketwork and farming still existed… It was a practically primitive survival sector. On the one hand I remember a childhood of shortages, but on the other hand I also remember lots of typical cultural expressions that the people celebrated very enthusiastically, as those societies made up a cultural inbreeding. In the 60’s there was a qualitative jump, tourism starts. The 70’s
were times of change, and from then onwards there was an attempt to do in 30 years that which should have been done in 200 years. There was no transition period, we suddenly substituted the canvas sandal for the computer. From my point of view Fuerteventura needed a moratorium, like the one that is taking place now. My work «De Sobredumbres» is a collection of poems that talks about our island’s historical, atmospheric and geographical solitudes. It’s divided into three parts, in which I try to explain this development, and I dare to foresee a future of restraint. Your opinion about the culture transfer. Culture disappears when the so does the environment it is surrounded by. Some time ago there was a religious culture, and the Rancho de Ánimas existed; there was a labour culture, with a song for every part of the ploughing process, the harvest, that of cleaning the «millo» (similar to sweet corn)… When these social functions disappeared, so did the cultural expressions that matched them. However we still hold parties, so the party folklore remains, keeping this kind of culture. Folklore will always remain because it shows that which is innate in the local people, and this kind of culture in the island doesn’t need any promotion, it develops in a natural way. I have met great folk musicians —I couldn’t mention them all— who understand folklore in an innate way and so they have transferred it, thus ennobling folklore. What about your relationship with Canarian folklore? I was fifteen when my ears were attracted by Canarian music bands. I remember how I gazed at the old folk playing the guitar. I didn’t have one, but I learnt the chords and I rehearsed on my forearm, having my shirt worn out by my fingers rubbing. In folklore we meet the whole world of the majorera oral literature. In majorera stanzas we find Góngora, Quevedo, we also find limericks, sextets, «liras»… «La Folia», which had the structure of a ten-line poem, disappears in the whole Spanish culture, except in The Canary Islands, and they belong to the XV century. Quatrains, romances… there are true jewel songs in folklore where the highbrow poetry has been handed down to the people, and the people have been in charge of keeping it alive. So in The Canary Islands we have around 70 different tunes what with songs and popular rhythms. This is an amazing spiritual wealth, you deepen into it a little bit and you find five centuries of tradition. Thank you, Marcos, for dedicating us your time and for letting your wisdom get us a bit closer to this Fuerteventura we inhabit.
