Casa Vieja es un Oasis Rural situado en la localidad de Villaverde. Compuesto por 10 cómodas habitaciones situadas alrededor de un patio interior y 10 villas totalmente separadas con jardines de plantas autóctonas y picón, invita a todos sus huéspedes a disfrutar de la armonía de este paraje rural de Fuerteventura. La madera y la piedra volcánica contrastan con el blanco de los muros y el verde de los cactus y palmeras. El restaurante del complejo fue construido a partir de las ruinas de una antigua casa majorera de finales del siglo XVIII. Su cálida iluminación y la música de ambiente crean una acogedora e íntima atmósfera en el comedor y la terraza, que siempre tienen vida, ya que además de los huéspedes, que disponen de media pensión, encontramos gente local de la isla, o turistas que se escapan del circuito más comercial. Roberto Picelli es el nuevo chef ejecutivo y gestor de Casa Vieja. Este cocinero italiano autodidacta, lleva 15 años afincado en Fuerteventura, así que conoce muy bien al público de la isla. Es un amante del vino y tiene muchas ideas nuevas para darle aún más vida a este Oasis. El menú que propone es internacional y de corte clásico. Lo componen entrantes españoles variados, ensaladas, pastas caseras y arroces. Además de las recomendables carnes a la brasa, de ternera, cordero lechal o cabrito, cuentan con pescado del día y algunos mariscos. Nos sorprendió gratamente la relación calidad precio para el atento y profesional servicio que recibimos. Roberto te ameniza la velada con anécdotas y curiosidades sobre vinos

y gastronomía, así que además de comer de maravilla también aprendes. Muy buena también la selección de vinos. Como recomendación, en cuanto al menú, quizás podríamos pedir un poco más de originalidad en la carta, a través de alguna sugerencia del día. En Casa Vieja también organizan banquetes y celebraciones de todo tipo, con la posibilidad de reservar todo el complejo para que los invitados puedan disfrutar por completo de sus comodidades.

No os perdáis su última promoción especial para parejas: Cena a la carta para dos personas, después relajaos y descansad en una de las junior suite con jacuzzi, y por la mañana desayunito en el bufé. Todo por 110€ en total. Sin duda, en Casa Vieja, hay muchas posibilidades. No dejen de pasarse a conocer este bonito rincón de la isla.

Casa Vieja is a Rural Oasis placed in the locality of Villaverde. Consisting of 10 comfortable rooms built around a central courtyard and 10 detached villas with gardens of native plants and «picón», it invites the customers to enjoy the harmony of our rural Fuerteventura. The wood and the volcanic rocks contrast the white walls and the green cacti and palm trees. The restaurant in this resort was built on the ruins of an old majorera house from the end of the XVIII century. Its warm lighting and background music create a cosy and intimate atmosphere in the dinning room and terrace, which are always lively, as apart from the half board customers we find locals or tourists escaping from the most commercial areas. Roberto Picelli is the new executive chef and manager of Casa Vieja. This self-taught Italian cook has been living in Fuerteventura for fifteen years, so he knows the public in the island very well. He’s a wine lover and he has lots of new ideas to make this Oasis even livelier. The menu he proposes is a classical and international one. It consists of an assortment of Spanish starters, salads, home-made pasta and rice. Apart from the recommended grilled meat, beef, suckling lamb or kid goat, they count on fresh fish and some seafood. We were really impressed by the quality/price ratio and the kind and professional service we enjoyed. Roberto entertains his customers with anecdotes and curiosities

about wines and gastronomy. So, apart from eating marvellously you learn too. Very good, also, the wine selection. We might ask them a bit more of originality in the menu, by means of a «tip of the day». In Casa Vieja they also organise banquets and any kind of celebrations, and they offer you the possibility to book the whole resort so that your guests can fully enjoy its comfort.

Don’t miss their last special promotion for couples: Dinner a la carte for two; then relax and rest in one of the junior suites with jacuzzi, and in the morning, have breakfast in the buffet. Dicen que en Brasil los niños nacen con una tabla de surf bajo los pies, y parece ser verdad porque Jatyr, con solo un añito y medio, ya andaba subiéndose a las tablas de la escuela de surf de su padre; ¡vamos que aprendió antes a coger espumas que a correr! Con 3 años ya surfeaba, al igual que muchos niños de su tierra natal, que pasan la mayor parte de su tiempo libre en las playas, trasteando bajo el sol y cabalgando las olas con una facilidad tal que parecen estar tocados por un dedo mágico.

KITE SURF CENTER Con 15 años vino a vivir a España, a Sopelana —donde su familia tiene los orígenes— y, aunque añora al resto de su familia que quedó en Brasil, la comida de allí, las olas y a los amigos de la infancia, aquí ha echado raíces y ha conseguido alcanzar su sueño: impulsar su carrera surfista. Su primera competición fue a los 7 años en Brasil, donde quedó 4º al pasar dos rondas entre 16 chavales. Fue todo un logro y desde ese momento supo que estaba hecho para ese mundo, aunque después de dedicar 15 años de su vida a la competición, hace dos años decidió hacer un parón para profundizar en su surfing. «Es totalmente incompatible estar dedicado por completo a la competición y a la vez entrenar para mejorar tu surfing en buenas olas. La competición muchas veces te exige saber surfear en olas horribles, y es a lo que dedicas gran parte del tiempo cuando quieres ganar campeonatos: a aprender a surfear esas malas olas. Estos dos años he estado haciendo surftrips para entrenar, grabando vídeos y haciendo sesiones de fotos, apartado del mundo de la competición para depurar mi estilo. Pero a partir de febrero del año que viene vuelvo a dedicarme 100% a la competición». Entre su lista interminable de sitios visitados: Indo, Australia, Hawai, Maldivas, Brasil, México, Marruecos… se queda con los dos últimos destinos porque, a parte del surfing, le gusta el estilo de vida de estos dos países y, sobre todo, por la soledad casi exclusiva de sus aguas. Pisó por primera vez Fuerteventura en 2007, cuando vino a hacer un documental en Lobos, y quedó enamorado de la Isla. La define como un paraíso, una isla mágica, por sus olas y por sus gentes y, gracias a un proyecto que tiene entre manos, piensa pasar aquí varias temporadas de ahora en adelante. Jatyr habla de Brasil como un lugar en el que la cultura del surf está muy arraigada. «Allí es muy fácil iniciarse en el surf, siempre hay alguien muy cercano que te ayuda y es facilísimo conseguir material para comenzar. Además existen muchos proyectos para enseñar a los niños el amor por este deporte y esta forma de vida». Nos cuenta que muchos de estos proyectos están enfocados a los niños de las familias sin recurso, como una forma de sacar a esos niños de la marginalidad de la pobreza y cree que así realmente se salva a muchos de ellos. Aquí en España aún tenemos bastante que aprender de la cultura de surf de países como este. Jatyr piensa que la evolución está en camino y que en los últimos 10 años ha visto muchos cambios positivos en España. Cree que hace falta que la gente con una verdadera pasión por el mundo del surf comparta sus conocimientos con otras personas, sobre todo con niños. «No sólo enseñar a surfear, sino transmitir la filosofía, el respeto hacia el mar,

el conocimiento del mismo, de las olas, las rompientes, las corrientes, del lenguaje del mar… Transmitir el respeto a los demás y también, ¿por qué no?, enseñar a apreciar la historia del surfing, de la evolución de esta forma de vida, de los avances en los materiales…». Por eso, ha comenzado, junto con la Protest Surfschool de Corralejo, un proyecto que tendrá lugar del 6 de octubre al 9 de noviembre, donde transmitirá toda esa energía que lleva dentro a los que quieran formar parte del proyecto. Quiere poder enseñar lo que sabe no sólo a niños sino también a quienes quieran mejorar su surfing o a quienes decidan iniciarse en este gratificante camino.

They say that in Brazil children are born with a surfboard under their feet, and it seems to be true because Jatyr, being just one and a half years old, was already standing on the boards in his father’s surf school; that’s it, he could catch broken waves before he could run! Being three years old he was already surfing, like many other children in his native land, who spent most of their time on the beach, messing up under the sun and riding waves so easily that they seemed to be touched by a magic finger.

At the age of 15 he settled in Spain, in Sopelana —where his family comes from— and though he misses the rest of his family that remained in Brazil, the food from there, the waves and his childhood friends, he has taken root here and he has reached his dream: to boost his surfing career. He took part in his first competition being 7 in Brazil, and he got the 4th position after two rounds among 16 boys. It was a real success and from that moment he realised he was meant for that world, although after devoting 15 years of his life to competition two years ago he decided to stop to deepen in his surfing. «It’s completely incompatible to be devoted to competition and have time to train and improve your surfing in good waves. Competitions very often requires surfing horrible waves, and this is what you devote most of your time to if you want to win championships: you must learn to surf bad waves. For the last two years I’ve been making surftrips to train, recording videos and also making some photo shoots, away from the world of competition in order to define my own style. But from next February on I will be devoted again 100% to competition». Among his endless list of visited places we find: Indo, Australia, Hawaii, Maldivas, Brazil, Mexico, Morocco... He prefers the last two because apart from surfing he likes

the life style in those two countries, and mainly because of the almost exclusive solitude of their waters. He came to Fuerteventura for the first time in 2007, to shoot a documentary in Lobos and he fell in Love with the island. He defines it as a paradise, a magic island because of its waves, its people, and thanks to a project he has in the pipeline he will spend here several seasons from now onwards. Jatyr speaks about Brazil as a place where the surf culture is very rooted. «There you find it very easy to start out in surfing, there is always someone close to you that will help you and it’s really easy to get the equipment to start. Moreover there are lots of projects to teach children the love for this sport and this life style». He tells us that many of these projects are focused on children from destitute families as a way of getting them out of poverty, and he really believes that many of these children are saved thanks to them. Here, in Spain, there is still lots to be learnt about the surf culture in countries like this one. Jatyr thinks that evolution is in progress and that he’s seen many positive changes for the last then years in Spain. He thinks it’s really necessary that people feeling true passion for the world of surf share their

knowledge with other people, mainly with children. «We must not only teach them how to surf but pass on a philosophy, the respect for the sea, knowledge about it, the breakers, the currents, the sea language... pass on the respect for the rest of the people and also, why not, teach to appreciate the history of surfing, the evolution of this way of life, the development of the equipment...» This is why he has started, together with Protest Surfschool in Corralejo, a project that will take place from October 6th to November 9th where he will transmit all the energy he carries inside to all those who want to take part in this project. He wants to be able to teach what he knows not just to children but also to all those who want to improve their surfing or those who want to get started out in this rewarding path. Nos pretenden asustar con que en Marruecos ya están a punto de comenzar las prospecciones y que si no nos llevamos nosotros el petróleo se lo llevarán ellos. Da igual señores, el petróleo no va a ser ni para nosotros ni para ellos, va a ser en todo caso para los mismos, así que no se dejen liar. Además, ¿qué clase de rabieta infantil es esa de hacer las cosas porque otros las estén haciendo?

Muerto Chillida, con una crisis económica brutal y además sabiendo que en esta isla la asistencia a los museos es escasa y están cerrando la mayoría de ellos, resulta que los políticos de turno siguen erre que erre con vaciar nuestra querida Tindaya, incluso cuando la última sentencia parece favorecer la protección de la montaña. ¡Ay, si tuviesen esta insistencia para otras cosas!

Con la línea continua que han pintado en la calle principal de Corralejo es un imposible entrar en la gasolinera a repostar. Vamos, que entre que subes hasta la rotonda, das la vuelta, bajas, repostas, vuelves a bajar a la rotonda y vuelves a subir, para salir del pueblo, has vaciado medio depósito otra vez.

They are trying to scare us by saying that in Morocco they are about to start the prospecting and that if we don’t draw out the crude they will. Never mind, ladies and gentlemen, the crude won’t be either for us or for them. In any case it will be for the usual people, so don’t be fooled! Moreover, which kind of tantrum is this one that makes you do things just because other people are doing them?

In spite of Chillida being dead, the financial crisis being amazing and knowing that the attendance to museums is scarce and most of them are being closed down, the current politicians keep insisting on drilling our dear Tindaya, although the last sentence seemed to favour the protection of the mountain. Oh, dear! If they only would insist so much on other matters!

I mean, what with going up to the roundabout, driving around, and then back to the petrol station, refuelling, driving back to the roundabout and then up again to exit the village you have consumed again half of your tank.

V Edición MEDIA MARATÓN INTERNACIONAL DUNAS DE FUERTEVENTURA

V INTERNATIONAL HALF MARATHON «DUNAS DE FUERTEVENTURA»

El sábado 2 de noviembre tendrá lugar la V Edición de la Media Maratón Internacional Dunas de Corralejo, junto con la II Edición de la Carrera de 8 kms. denominada «El Quintillo». El recorrido transcurre, prácticamente en un 95%, en el Parque Natural de las Dunas de Corralejo, por lo que la belleza y originalidad del mismo está garantizada. La salida se efectuará a las 9:30h desde el C.C El Campanario. El tiempo límite de la prueba será de 3 horas, el coste de la inscripción 35€ para la ½ Maratón (300 plazas) y 20€ para «El Quintillo» (200 plazas). El periodo de inscripciones empezó el pasado mes de junio y finalizará el 28 de octubre. Puedes inscribirte en Dany Sport.

On Saturday November 2nd the V international half marathon «Dunas de Corralejo» will take place , together with the II 8km race «El Quintillo». 95% of the itinerary will go over the natural park Dunas de Corralejo, so the beauty and originality are guaranteed. The starting time will be 9:30h at C.C El Campanario. The time limit for this event will be 3 hours, and the enrolment fee will be 35€ for the half Marathon (300 participants) and 20€ for «El Quintillo» (200 participants). IX Campeonato de Surf y Bodyboard Garcey 2013

La primera semana de este mes termina el plazo para la presentación de alegaciones al Estudio de Impacto Ambiental (EIA) de las prospecciones en Lanzarote y Fuerteventura, que ha realizado Repsol. Un estudio que han hecho en tan solo 15 días (humanamente imposible) y que han presentado en el mes de agosto, aprovechando el mes de vacaciones por excelencia. Por otro lado, continúan las acciones en el marco de la campaña SaveCanarias para poner de manifiesto la voluntad del pueblo. Hasta ahora, en solo dos meses savecanarias.org ha recogido más de 22.000 firmas. ¡Ánimo gente, estamos despiert@s! Podéis descargar las alegaciones al EIA en: www.cabildofuer.es Cualquiera puede presentar sus alegaciones antes del día 7 de octubre en cualquier registro de administración pública.

Y van ya con esta 9 ediciones del Campeonato de Surf y Bodyboard que los chicos del Club «El Batiero» organizan cada año en la playa de Garcey, en el municipio de Pájara. Este año el fin de semana seleccionado es el del 19 y 20 de octubre. El campeonato no es solo de Surf, acoge también las modalidades de Bodyboard y DropKnee. Se trata de un «Campeonato abierto» a todos los competidores que quieran participar y probar su nivel con otros participantes. Por tanto, no es necesario estar federado ni provenir de ninguno de los circuitos que se celebran en el resto de las islas, para así dar la oportunidad a todos los competidores que se quieran presentar, sin que interfiera la parte económica (los chicos de «El Batiero» son conscientes de que muchos deportistas de estas islas no tienen las ayudas necesarias para presentarse a los campeonatos de los circuitos reglados, por eso apuestan por un campeonato local que da cabida a todos). El precio de la inscripción es de 15€ por participante, con derecho a una camiseta del Campeonato, un seguro de responsabilidad civil y la comida incluida del sábado y el domingo. IX Surf and Bodyboard Championship Garcey 2013 And this will be the ninth Surf and Bodyboard Championship that the boys from «El Batiero» club organize every year in Garcey beach, in the municipality of Pájara. This year, the chosen weekend has been October 19th and 20th. It’s not just a Surf championship, it also holds Bodyboard and DropKnee. It’s an «Open championship» for every participant who wants to take part and try their level with other participants. So, you don’t need to become a member nor come from any other events taking place in the rest of the islands, so as to give a chance to anyone, not letting their economic situation be a hindrance(the boys from «El Batiero» are aware that lots of sportsmen and women in these islands don’t count on the necessary financial support to take part in official events, and this is why they support a local championship, where everybody is welcome). The enrolment price is 15€ per participant, including a championship t-shirt, liability insurance and food for Saturday and Sunday. situation of the oil prospecting The first week of this month is the deadline to present allegations to the environmental impact assessment (EIA) about the prospecting in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, carried out by Repsol. A study made in just 15 days (humanly impossible) and presented last August, taking advantage of the prime holiday month. On the other hand, actions in the campaign SaveCanarias go on in order to expose the will of the people. Up to now, in just two months, savecanarias.org has gathered more than 22.000 signatures. Y tenemos que llevar todo lo necesario para operar, porque allí no tienen nada. Así que hemos hecho una lista enorme de material que, gracias a los colaboradores que se unen a nuestro proyecto, estamos consiguiendo poco a poco... Aunque no es suficiente y necesitamos más, por eso pedimos la colaboración de todo el que pueda echarnos una mano. Agradecemos mucho los servicios hospitalarios de Canarias, que están aportando material que ya no se utiliza y que allí será muy útil. Para recaudar fondos tenemos planeados unos cuantos eventos: un concierto en el Gallinero, que es un bar en Las Palmas, un torneo de Pádel, un concierto benéfico... Thanks to a friend I became aware of the project Uganda 2013, a project initiated by the nurse Manuel Luque with his NGO WorldProject, when they were travelling last summer around Africa as backpackers and decided to spend the last days as volunteers in the orphanage Malayaka House, in the city of Entebbe. There they could really see the health deficiencies in that place where, just as an example, they think children are strong and don’t need to be anesthetised to be cured of severe burns. When they returned to The Canary Islands they thought they had to help somehow and they started their project Uganda 2013, with which they have already carried out several health care expeditions. In Union Surgery we want to join them in their next expedition in November. Our team is made up of health professionals: two general surgeons, Mariela Braithwait and Justyna Drewiak; one pediatric surgeon, Adam Mol; one anaesthetist, Alexis Rodríguez; one operating theatre nurse, Carolina Santana; myself, chemist and specialist in surgical supplies. Our intention is to make an expedition to Entebbe’s hospital (Uganda) to operate the most common pathologies that cannot be operated there because of a lack of human and technical resources. And we must carry with us all the necessary equipment because they have nothing there. So we have made a huge list of surgical supplies that, thanks to the contributors who are joining our project, we are getting little by little... Although it’s not enough and we need more of them; this is why we call for the cooperation of all of you who can give us a hand. We thank the hospital services in the Canary Islands, which are supplying material which isn’t used here anymore but which will be very useful there. In order to get some funds we have planned a few events: a concert in El Gallinero, a bar in Las Palmas, a paddle tournament, a charity concert... and we want to join some events in Fuerteventura, so we are open to suggestions. LA BATALLA DE TAMASITE En 1739 Gran Bretaña declara la guerra a España, atacando sus colonias con sus fuerzas navales y con ayuda de Portugal. Es la denominada Guerra del Asiento o de La Oreja de Jenkins (1739-1748) y transcurre principalmente en el Caribe.

En esa época, mediados de S. XVIII, la isla de Fuerteventura estaba atravesando malos tiempos debido a los años de malas cosechas que generaban graves crisis y hambrunas —muchos majoreros se veían obligados a emigrar hacia otras islas para subsistir—; además, el régimen instaurado desde la conquista europea era el señorío, que sometía a la población a la tiranía del señor de la Isla. Desde que se declara la guerra, Canarias comienza a padecer los ataques de corsarios, que capturan botines y navíos isleños para posteriormente venderlos en Madeira. Fuerteventura, desprovista de fortificaciones para su protección y sin contar con ningún ejército, era una presa fácil, por su geografía y por estar prácticamente rodeada de playas que permitían el fácil acceso de los corsarios y saqueadores. El pueblo majorero estaba solo ante el peligro, al igual que el resto del archipiélago. En Fuerteventura, como en las otras islas, los propios majoreros se organizaban en milicias populares, armados con palos y piedras para luchar, si fuera necesario, con los corsarios que pretendían saquear o dominar la Isla, bien para su uso y disfrute o bien como moneda de cambio por otros territorios posteriormente. El 13 de octubre de 1740 desembarca un corsario inglés en Gran Tarajal y saquea la zona de Tuineje; pero una milicia de vecinos de la región, liderados por el Teniente Coronel Sánchez Umpiérrez, decide enfrentarse a los asaltantes. Se trata de la batalla de «El Cuchillete», donde los ingleses resultaron abatidos a manos de la milicia popular, cuyo armamento se reducía a piedras y palos, que históricamente ha manejado tan bien el canario. 33 soldados muertos de

los 53 que desembarcaron; el resto capturado por los majoreros. Un mes más tarde, el 24 de noviembre de 1740, 55 corsarios desembarcan en la misma zona. Esta vez la milicia que les esperaba era más numerosa y contaba con algún arma de fuego que pudieron obtener de la anterior batalla; se trata de la célebre Batalla de Tamasite. Una de las estrategias que emplearon los isleños, y que parece ser muy común, fue la de utilizar a los camellos, tan numerosos entonces, como escudo. Tras ellos, los isleños y su manejo del palo y las pocas armas que ya tenían, permitieron que los majoreros aplastaran a los invasores en el enfrentamiento cuerpo a cuerpo. La playa de Gran Tarajal, en el municipio de Tuineje, se convirtió por un momento en un campo de batalla. Las Canarias fueron objetivo constante de ataques y saqueos durante los siglos XVI, XVII y XVIII, a cargo de piratas y corsarios ingleses, franceses, berberiscos y holandeses. La piratería concluyó en 1797, con la derrota del Almirante Nelson en aguas de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, y no fue hasta el siglo XIX que el Imperio Español instaló, en esta colonia, unas tropas regulares. Cada 13 de octubre, el pueblo de Tuineje conmemora la Batalla de Tamasite con las Fiestas Juradas, que resultan de una promesa realizada a San Miguel por haberles ayudado a combatir a los ingleses en 1740, escenificando buena parte de los hechos que tuvieron lugar por aquel entonces.

TAMASITE BATTLE In 1739 Great Britain wages war on Spain, attacking colonies with its sea forces and with the help from Portugal. This is the so called War of Jenkins’ ear (1739-1748) and it takes place mainly in The Caribbean.

At those times, middle of the XVIII century, Fuerteventura was going through difficult times due to years of poor harvest that generated serious crisis and famine —many majoreros had no choice but to migrate to other islands in order to survive—; moreover, the established regime from the European conquest was that of dominions, which subjugated the population to the tyranny of the Island’s Lord. From the declaration of war, The Canary Islands start to suffer the attacks by pirates, who captured loots and ships from the Islands to sell them later on in Madeira. Fuerteventura lacking fortresses and arm forces fot its protection was an easy prey, because of its geography and for being surrounded by beaches that allowed pirates and looters to access easily. The majorero people was facing the danger alone, as well as the rest of the archipelago. In Fuerteventura, just like in the other islands, majoreros themselves organized popular militias, armed with sticks and stones to fight, if necessary,

the pirates who intended to sack and control the island, either to occupy it or to exchange it for other lands later on. On October 13th 1740 a British corsair disembarks in Gran Tarajal and sacks Tuineje area; but a militia of neighbours in this region, lead by the lieutenant-colonel Sánchez Umpiérrez, decides to face the looters. We are talking about «El Cuchillete» battle, where the British were defeated by the popular militia, only armed with stones and sticks, so masterly handled by the Canarian people along history. 33 out of the 53 soldiers who disembarked were killed; the rest of them were captured by the majoreros. One month later, on November 24th 1740, 55 pirates disembarked in the same area. This time the militia was more numerous and they counted on some fire arms they could obtain in the previous battle; we’re talking about the famous Tamasite battle. One of the strategies used by the islanders, and which seemed to be very common, was to use camels, so numerous then, as shields. Behind them

the islanders and their masterly use of sticks and the few arms they already had, allowed majoreros to crush their invaders in the hand-to-hand fight. Gran Tarajal´s beach, in the municipality of Tuineje, became a battlefield for a moment. The Canary islands were the target of constant attacks and loots during the XVI, XVII and XVIII centuries, by British, French, Berber and Dutch pirates and corsairs. Piracy fell in 1797, with the defeat of admiral Nelson in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and it wasn’t until the XIX century that the Spanish Empire settled regular troops in this colony. Every October 13th the village of Tuineje commemorates Tamasite Battle with its «Fiestas Juradas», which started with a promise made to San Miguel for having helped them defeat the British in 1740, playing out a large number of the facts that took place then.

SURFING POR SEBASTIÁN RUIZ GARCÍA

TÓXICO

De todos es conocido que el surfing, ya sea como deporte o como estilo de vida, es saludable y sobre todo respetuoso con el medio ambiente. Una persona, una tabla y el mar. Así de simple. No hay nada menos contaminante que el surf… Y seguramente a escala individual podría llegar a ser así, pero si ampliamos nuestra visión a escala global la cosa cambia; si además hacemos caso de los datos el resultado es muy diferente. Ahora que están tan en boga las prospecciones petrolíferas en Canarias, parémonos un momento a reflexionar sobre nuestra relación con la fuente de energía más contaminante e insolidaria de cuantas existen. Para empezar, ¿cuántos de nosotros vamos en busca de olas en coche? Casi todos, diría yo; no es raro que en la mayoría de picos en los que surfeamos haya tantos vehículos como surfistas, lo que significa combustible quemado, aceite, neumáticos, etc. La mayoría de estos coches, furgonetas o pick ups, los ocupan una o dos personas, con lo que estamos desperdiciando de un 60 a un 80% de su capacidad de transporte. Se estima que somos alrededor de 20 millones de surfistas en el mundo, cada uno con su vehículo, 2 sesiones de surfing de media por semana, 10km recorridos por sesión, tirando por lo bajo… ¡hagan números! Cada año se fabrican unas 400.000 tablas en todo el mundo. La mayoría de estas tablas están hechas de poliuretano (los famosos blanks), fibra de vidrio y resina de poliéster; todos ellos productos derivados del petróleo y con un pro-

ceso de fabricación altamente contaminante. Alrededor del 20% de un blank es desperdiciado en recorte y lijado, como parte del proceso de manufactura de la tabla. Estos recortes en su mayoría van a parar a vertederos donde son enterrados. 250 toneladas de Neopreno se eliminan cada año como residuos no reciclables. El neopreno se fabrica a partir de derivados del petróleo incluyendo el PVC, el plástico más tóxico para nuestra salud y el entorno. El neopreno tiende a corroerse con el sol y el agua, por lo que hay que cambiarlo cada poco tiempo. Tiene graves efectos contaminantes y su reutilización es antieconómica. Además tarda muchos años en descomponerse. 6 millones de tacos de parafina se venden cada año alrededor del mundo. Aunque hoy día es fácil encontrar en las tiendas parafina libre de tóxicos, eco-wax y parafina reciclada, aún se siguen fabricando ceras a partir de petróleo, y ya sabemos que parte de la cera que damos a la tabla

antes de cada baño acaba en el fondo del mar, comprometiendo la vida de los organismos marinos. 6.000 toneladas de protector solar se vierten anualmente en los mares de todo el mundo, no solo por surfistas, claro. Los químicos que se encuentran en las cremas solares son una de las principales causas de blanqueamiento del coral y amenazan al 10% de los arrecifes del planeta. Otro de los factores de contaminación son los viajes en busca de olas y los megaeventos de surf, que producen, sobre todo en países en vías de desarrollo, un impacto social y medioambiental negativo en forma de residuos que muchas economías locales no pueden soportar. Afortunadamente, poco a poco la conciencia ecológica va calando entre usuarios y fabricantes, los unos reclamando productos respetuosos con el medio ambiente y acordes a la forma en que nos gustaría vivir, y los otros desarrollando materiales de bajo impacto y alto rendimiento. Entre estos, se encuentran ya en el mercado tablas fabricadas a partir de restos de shapes y hechas en impresoras 3D, blanks de corcho natural, neoprenos ultrafinos de baja densidad, tablas de cartón, eco-wax, resinas de epoxi con alto contenido de material biológico… Un sinfín de inventos y más que están por venir. De nosotros depende, en parte, que el surf llegue a ser un deporte y un estilo de vida saludable y sostenible. Haciendo un uso racional de los medios de transporte, alargando la vida de tablas y trajes, apoyando las nuevas y buenas ideas, materiales y procesos de fabricación y animando a comerciantes y distribuidores a hacernos llegar los productos que ya existen en el mercado.

TOXIC SURFING

We all know that surfing, as a sport or as a life style, is healthy and, most of all, environmentally-friendly. A person, a board, and the sea, as simple as that. There’s nothing less polluting than surf... And this could be like this at an individual level, but at a global level things change; if in addition to that we take the data into account, the result is very different. Now that oil prospecting is so in vogue in the Canary Islands, let’s stop to think about our relationship with the most polluting and unsupportive energy source of them all. To begin with, how many of us go in search of waves by car? Almost all of us, I’d say; it’s not strange to find as many surfers as cars in most surfing spots, which means burnt fuel, oil, tyres etc. Most of these cars, vans or pick ups are occupied by one or two people, so we’re wasting among a 60 and an 80% of their capacity. It’s estimated that there are about 20 million surfers in the world, each one with their own vehicle, an average of two surfing sessions per day and a 10 km drive per session, on the lower side... make calculations! Around 400.000 boards are manufactured annually in the whole world. Most of these boards are made of polyurethane (the famous blanks), fibreglass and polyester resin, all of them derived from petroleum, and involving a highly polluting manufacturing process. Around a 20% of a blank is wasted in cutting and sanding, as a part of the manufacturing process. The cuts out end up, most of them, in dumping sites where they’re buried. 250 tons of neoprene are mainly disposed of as nonrecyclable waste. Wetsuits are manufactured using petroleum derivatives, including PVC, the most toxic plastic for our health and environment. Wetsuits are eaten away by sun and water, so we must change them very often. Neoprene has serious polluting effects, and

recycling it is really expensive. Moreover it takes a long time to decompose. 6 million paraffin pads are sold annually around the world. Although nowadays it’s easy to find shops selling nontoxic surf wax, eco-wax, and recycled one, wax derived from petroleum is still manufactured, and we already know that a part of the wax we rub on our boards before every session ends up at the sea bottom, threatening the life of marine organisms. 6000 tons of sunscreen are spilt every year in the seas all around the world, not just by surfers, of course. The chemicals found in the sunscreens are one of the main causes for the coral bleaching, threatening the 10% of the reefs in the planet. Another polluting factor are the trips in search of waves and surf mega events, which cause, mainly in developing countries, a negative social and environmental impact in the shape of waste that many local economies can’t sustain. Fortunately little by little environmental awareness is leaving a mark among users and manufacturers, the former demanding environmentally-friendly products, coherent with the life style they’d like to follow, and the latter developing low environmental impact and high level performance materials. Among them we can already find in the market boards made of remains of shapes and in 3D printers, natural cork blanks, low-density ultra-thin wetsuits, card surfing boards, eco-wax, epoxy resins with high biological value... endless devices and many more still to come. The fact that surf may become a sport and a healthy and sustainable life style partly depends on us: making a sensible use of the means of transport, lengthening the life of our boards and wetsuits, supporting new and good ideas, materials and manufacturing processes and encouraging businessmen and dealers to let us reach the products already existing in the market.

Si eres de los que valoran más cinco minutos de cama que un mero desayuno, o los que afirman que les es imposible abrir bocado a primera hora de la mañana, no es necesario que desayunes bien desde el principio, bastará con que desayunes mejor. Empieza por introducir algún líquido (zumo, yogur bebible…) y poco a poco ve añadiendo algún tentempié sencillo y rápido (barrita de cereales, galletas…) ¡Rompe con la pereza y desayuna! Cómo empiezas la mañana determina la forma de ver las cosas y la calidad de tus experiencias del día. Así que no lo dudes ¡desayuna! .22

Tras el verano, después de haberse expuesto a sesiones prolongadas de sol en la playa, la piel necesita una serie de cuidados imprescindibles para paliar uno de los problemas más frecuentes que más consultas dermatológicas ocasiona a la vuelta de las vacaciones: manchas cutáneas. De forma gradual y a medida que va desapareciendo el bronceado es cuando más visibles se hacen. No nos cansaremos de repetir que la prevención es un factor fundamental para evitar estos procesos de hiperpigmentación de la piel: no exponerse demasiadas horas seguidas al sol y usar un buen protector solar de factor adecuado son los mejores métodos para evitar este problema antiestético. Existen diferentes causas por las que aparecen las manchas, como pueden ser la edad, los antecedentes familiares o razones hormonales; aunque la principal causa en Fuerteventura se debe, sobre todo, a la acumulación de radiación solar, es decir cuando la piel ya ha tomado más sol del que tolera. En Oxygen disponemos de diversos métodos y productos específicos para ayudarte. Realizamos un peeling para la eliminación de las células muertas y las impurezas depositadas en la superficie de la piel, se trata de una exfoliación especial, realizada con sustancias específicas, que ayudan a despigmentar las zonas de piel afectadas. Posteriormente usaremos un producto despigmentante de alta cósmetica como Natura Bissé. El uso de estos productos con agentes blanqueadores ralentiza la producción de melanina en el interior del melanocito y contribuye a aclarar las manchas, y si bien no siempre garantizan su total eliminación, dan mayor luminosidad a la tez, quedando muy atenuadas. El ácido kójico es un activo que inhibe la producción de tirosina, directamente relacionada con la producción de melanina y, por tanto, con la aparición de nuevas manchas. En conclusión, cada vez más expertos están de acuerdo en que para prevenir su aparición es fundamental utilizar a diario cosmética que contengan un porcentaje de protección solar, aunque nuestra piel no esté directamente expuesta.
