KAROLIS JANULIS GANADOR CONCURSO MACAROPORTADA 2016

Entre las 12 portadas excepcionales que publicamos el pasado año 2016, la ganadora de nuestro concurso de Macaroportada fue la de la edición de abril, de Karolis Janulis.

Este artista nació en Klaipèda, Lituania, en 1981. Empezó a interesarle más la fotografía en 2013 y durante dos años estuvo buscando diferentes perspectivas, sobretodo desde arriba. En 2015 adquirió su primer «drone» y empezó a plasmar en la realidad sus ideas de fotografía aérea. Con la ayuda del nuevo mecanismo, muestra el mundo en una perspectiva aún bastante inusual, destacando el juego de sombras y presentando la acción en una composición perfecta. Lo mejor de su obra se ha ido mostrando a diario en la redes sociales del autor, y muy pronto su fotografía aérea ha sido descubierta por la prensa mundial, conocidos del fotógrafo, entusiastas del «drone» y el público en general. En 2015 Karolis Janulis empezó a cooperar con la agencia de fotografía de prensa de Londres, y desde entonces su fotografía aérea se ha mostrado en la BBC, CNN, ABC, The Daily Mail, The Telegraph, The Guardian, Rotor Drone, American Photo, f11, entre otras publicaciones mundiales. En 2016 ganó el tercer premio en un concurso internacional de fotografía aérea con una foto de Gran Canaria. En el mismo año fue seleccionado en los premios Sony World Photography. El artista acaba de publicar su libro de fotografía aérea «Ser un pájaro en Lithuania», y ha llevado a cabo varias exposiciones de fotografía personal al rededor del mundo. WINNER OF «MACAROPORTADA» CONSTEST 2016 Among the 12 exceptional covers we published last year 2016, the winner of our «Macaroportada» constest was the cover of April’s issue, by Karolis Janulis. Karolis Janulis was born in 1981.01.13 in Klaipèda, Lithuania. He got more interested in photography since 2013. In the next two years artist was looking for the different perspectives, especially from above. In 2015 artist has acquired his first drone and started implementing his aerial photography ideas into the reality. With the help of new gear he shows the world in still a very unusual perspective, highlighting the shadow play and presenting action in a perfect composition. Best of his works hare daily shown on author’s social accounts and very soon his aerial photography has been noticed by worldwide press, photographer’s community, drone enthusiast and regular viewer. In 2015 Karolis Janulis has started cooperating with the press photography agency from London and his aerial photography since then has been featured on BBC, CNN, ABC, The Daily Mail, The Telegraph, The Guardian, Rotor Drone, American Photo, f11 among many other worldwide publications. In 2016 he has won 3rd place at the international drone photography awards with the picture from Gran Canaria. On the same year he has also been shortlisted in the Sony World Photography Awards. LA PARADISÍACA ISLA DE FUERTEVENTURA, EN LA QUE ESTÁBAMOS ACOSTUMBRADOS A SURFEAR CASI EN SOLITARIO O CON UNOS CUANTOS AMIGOS, HOY EN DÍA SE ESTÁ CONVIRTIENDO EN UN DESTINO ELEGIDO POR CADA VEZ MÁS VIAJEROS QUE VIENEN A DISFRUTAR DE SUS OLAS, ALGUNOS DE ELLOS EXPERIMENTADOS Y OTROS PRINCIPIANTES. Article given up by Protest Surfcenter Fuerteventura The paradisiacal island of Fuerteventura, where we were used to surfing almost by ourselves or with just a few friends, is becoming a destination chosen by more and more travellers who come to enjoy its waves, some of them professionals and some others, beginners. Many of the surfing peaks being overcrowded we have considered it would be a good idea to publish this article of Protest Surfcentre, where they explain the basic rules of surf, to reduce the number of dangerous situations and problems in the water.

Queremos que todos aprendáis a surfear con seguridad y os convirtáis en surferos que respetan el medio y a los otros surfistas, por ello vamos a hablar de las normas básicas del surf, que como en otros deportes, es necesario conocer y respetar para no tener problemas en el agua y que no haya accidentes innecesarios. • NO SALTAR OLAS. Al intentar coger una ola uno debe mirar a ambos lados, para asegurarse de que nadie viene ya en la ola, no puedes coger una ola donde ya hay un surfero disfrutándola. • RESPETAR LA PREFERENCIA. Es importante respetar nuestro turno al entrar al pico, respetar a los surfistas que llevan más tiempo esperando para coger la ola. La ola es de quien está más cerca de la rompiente, con esto, cuando el surfista que está más cerca de este punto se pone de pie debes de dejar de remar, la ola es suya. • OBSERVAR LO QUE SUCEDE ALREDEDOR. Para evitar así molestar a los otros surfistas en el pico, busca una buena ubicación dentro del agua para no interferir en las maniobras de los demás. • ENTRAR AL AGUA O REMONTAR FUERA DE LA TRAYECTORIA DE OTROS SURFISTAS. Para ello, si no hay un canal de entrada sin olas, a veces es preferible remontar por la espuma blanca que ha dejado atrás el surfista que disfruta de la ola. • CONTROLAR LA TABLA EN TODO MOMENTO. Usa el leash o amarradera para que tu tabla no ande suelta, ya que es un peligro para el resto de surfistas y, aún así, evita soltarla para remontar ya que puedes golpear a otros con ella. • LA COMUNICACIÓN ES BÁSICA EN EL AGUA. En ocasiones, puedes avisar con tu voz al resto de surfistas de hacia qué lado vas a surfear o que la preferencia es tuya, siempre desde el respeto.

• NO MOSTRARSE ANSIOSO NI HACER «LA CULEBRA». No es necesario remar todas las olas y moverse, ansioso, de un lado al otro para coger toda ola que llega. No gusta nada en el agua «La Culebra», que consiste en intentar robar la preferencia de otro, remando por su espalda, para colocarse más cerca de la zona de preferencia de la ola que llega. • MANTENER LA CALMA Y LA EDUCACIÓN. Tanto ante una infracción de otro como una tuya, sé educado, mantén la calma, pide perdón, perdona,… • AYUDAR SI ALGUIEN LO NECESITA. Si alguien se encuentra en problemas, ¡ayúdalo! Si eres veterano da consejos a los principiantes. Si eres principiante pide consejo, pregunta por las condiciones de la ola antes de aventurarte a entrar. • NO CONTAMINAR. Respeta el medio en el que estás inmerso y a esa gran naturaleza que te da la posibilidad de surfear olas. Mantén limpia la playa, no contamines, no generes basura y, si lo haces, recógela. • RESPETA A LOS SURFISTAS LOCALES. Llevan surfeando esas olas años, puede que toda la vida, por ello respeto y paciencia, así podrás ganarte tu lugar en el pico de manera natural. En realidad, esto del «código de conducta del surf» es tener sentido común y educación. En determinados baños coincidimos muchos surferos en el agua y, al respetar estas normas, contribuyes al buen funcionamiento del surf y a que todos disfrutemos de este maravilloso deporte. Buenas olas para todos.

We wants everybody to learn how to surf in a save way and to turn you into a surfer who respects the ocean and other surfers. This is why we tell you now the basic rules of surfing, which are important to know, as in any other sports, so you don’t get problems in the water and of course, to avoid unnecessary accidents. • DON’T DROP IN SOMEONE’S WAVE! The moment you want to take a wave you have to look aside while paddling for the wave to make sure nobody else is already riding it. You cannot take the wave somebody is already enjoying! • RESPECT THE PREFERENCE! It’s important to respect our turn when we enter the peak. Respect the surfers who are already waiting to catch a wave. The one who is closest to the point where the wave is breaking has priority! Go catch it! • OBSERVE WHAT’S HAPPENING AROUND YOU! To avoid disturbing other surfers in the peak, look for a good place in the water to not bother the maneuver of the others. • ENTER AND LEAVE THE WATER WITHOUT GETTING IN THE WAY OF OTHER SURFERS! For spots without a channel it’s recommended to leave the water with the white wash after the surfer enjoyed the wave. • ALWAYS CONTROL THE BOARD! Use a leash so you don’t loose the board, which is a risk to other surfers, but nevertheless leave it if you are running the risk to hit somebody. • COMMUNICATION IS EVERYTHING IN THE WATER! Under circumstances you have to use your voice to tell other surfers which direction you want to go or that you have the priority, but always with respect. • DON’T PADDLE FOR EVERY WAVE! It’s not necessary to paddle for

every wave that comes in nor to move from one side of the bay to the other to catch every wave entering. Nobody likes someone trying to steal the priority, paddling in his back to get the better positioning. • STAY CALM AND RETAIN TO YOUR EDUCATION! If there occurs an incident, caused by you or by someone else, stay calm and excuse, perdón, perdona…. • HELP IF SOMEBODY NEEDS HELP! If somebody has problems we help him/her. If you are a surf-veteran, give advice to the beginners. If you are a beginner ask for advice, ask for the conditions of the wave before you enter the water. • NO POLLUTION! Respect the medium you are immerst in and the amazing nature which gives us the possibility to surf waves. Keep the beach clean, don´t pollute it, don´t cause litter and if you do, take it with you! • RESPECT LOCAL SURFERS! they’ve been riding those waves for years, maybe all their lives; so, respect and patience. That way you’ll be able to win a place in the peak in a natural way. The truth is, this code of how to conduct oneself while surfing, it´s more about having corporate feel and education. You are going to meet a lot of other surfers in the water and this rules help you to handle the surfing and that everybody can enjoy this beautiful sport. Good waves for everybody.

LECHE DORADA: un aliado para la salud

La Leche Dorada es una bebida cuyo principal ingrediente es la cúrcuma y que presenta, por tanto, todas las ventajas para la salud que guarda esta especia. La cúrcuma, planta procedente de la India, de la que se utiliza sobre todo el rizoma, es famosa en el mundo entero por actuar en más de 150 actividades terapéuticas. Se le atribuye propiedades antioxidantes, antiinflamatorias, fortalece el sistema inmunológico, mejora la circulación, ya que ayuda a controlar los niveles de colesterol y a reducir la presión arterial alta, y ayuda a fluidificar las mucosidades. Ideal contra la artritis y la artrosis, ya que ayuda a lubricar las articulaciones, buen analgésico y un aliado para frenar el deterioro cognitivo, para depurar y desintoxicar el hígado, y para regular el metabolismo, contribuyendo a la pérdida de peso. Y por dejar de enumerar sus propiedades para la salud, actúa positivamente contra diferentes problemas de la piel y del cabello, y es un gran aliado para conseguir un sueño reparador si se toma de noche.

MODO DE PREPARACIÓN

Leche Dorada: an ally to health «Leche Dorada» is a milk whose main ingredient is turmeric, and brings to health all the benefits this spice keeps. Turmeric, a plant coming from India, of which mainly its root is used, is popular worldwide for taking part in over 150 therapeutic activities. Antioxidant and non-inflammatory properties are attributed to it; it strengthens the immune system, improves the blood flow as it helps control cholesterol levels and reduce high blood pressure. It also helps keep mucus fluid. It’s ideal against arthritis and osteoarthritis, as it lubricates the joints. It’s a good pain-killer and an ally to stop cognitive decline, purify and detoxify the liver, regulate metabolism contributing to weight loss. To complete the listing of health properties, it has positive effects against skin and hair disorders, and it’s a great ally to achieve a restful sleep when taken at nights.

DIRECTIONS Ingredients: — 30g turmeric powder — 125ml filtered water — 2,5 g. ground pepper (optional), as it allows the easy absorption of the active principles of curcumin. — 1 cup of almond, rice, soy, hemp, coconut or cow milk. — 1 tea spoon of extra virgin olive oil, almonds or coconut oil. — Honey to taste First, we prepare the turmeric paste. In a little pot, over a medium heat, we add the turmeric powder with the water and pepper. We stir until the water evaporates and we get a paste that we’ll keep in a jar in the fridge to use later on. To make «leche dorada», is recommended to take at night, we heat a cup of our chosen milk. We add the teaspoon of oil and we boil it. Just when it comes to the boil, we remove it from heat and we add the teaspoon of turmeric paste we have in the fridge. We dissolve it well and when it cools down a bit we add honey to taste and it’ll be ready to take. A drink that, apart from taking care of us is delicious. Cheers!

Ingredientes: — 3 0g de polvo de cúrcuma — 1 25ml de agua filtrada —2 ,5g de pimienta molida (opcional), ya que facilita la absorción de los principios activos de la curcumina. — 1 taza de leche de almendras, de arroz, de soja, de cáñamo, de coco o de vaca. — 1 cucharadita de aceite de oliva virgen extra, de aceite de almendras o de aceite de coco. —M iel al gusto Primero se procede a la preparación de la pasta de cúrcuma. En un cazo pequeño, a fuego medio, se pone la cúrcuma con el agua y la pimienta. Se remueve frecuentemente hasta que el agua se evapore y se obtenga una pasta que guardaremos en un bote en la nevera para su posterior utilización. Para preparar la Leche Dorada, que se recomienda tomar de noche, se pone a calentar una taza de la leche elegida. Se le añade la cucharada de aceite y se lleva a ebullición. Justo cuando rompa a hervir se aparta del fuego y se le añade una cucharada de la pasta de cúrcuma que tenemos en la nevera. Se disuelve bien, y cuando enfríe un poco se le añade miel al gusto y está lista para consumir. Una bebida que además de protegernos está deliciosa. ¡Salud!

EN FEbRERO SE CELEbRARá EN FUERTEVENTURA UN CERTAMEN PARA ESCOGER EL MEJOR ACEITE DE OLIVA DE LAS ISLAS FUERTEVENTURA SE PROMOCIONA EN FITUR Y RECOGE EL PRIMER PREMIO EN LA CATEGORÍA MEJOR DESTINO DEL SISTEMA INTEGRAL DE CALIDAD TURÍSTICA EN DESTINO (SICTED) El pasado mes de enero tuvo lugar la Feria Internacional de Turismo, en Madrid (FITUR), donde Fuerteventura promocionó su destino proponiendo nuevas conexiones de carreteras, mejoras en los servicios de transporte público y mejor conectividad digital en los hoteles y apartamentos de la isla. Con estas mejoras se pretende continuar con la línea de ascenso del turismo en la isla, que del 2015 al 2016 aumentó un 12,9% el número de pasajeros. Otra de las mejoras que la isla ha presentado para este 2017 es su transformación digital, que permitirá de ahora en adelante realizar pagos digitales en multitud de establecimientos a través de Paypal. Esta edición de FITUR coronó a Fuerteventura con el primer premio finalista en la categoría Mejor Destino del Sistema Integral de Calidad Turística en Destino (Sicted) 2016, otorgado por el Ministerio de Turismo, y que se entrega a los organismos que mejor han promovido la competitividad de las empresas, impulsando el proyecto Sicted en su territorio. FUERTEVENTURA WINS FAVOUR WITH FITUR AND GETS THE FIRST PRIZE AS BEST DESTINATION OF THE QUALITY SYSTEM TOURIST DESTINATION (SICTED) Last January The International Tourist Fair took place in Madrid (FITUR), where Fuerteventura promoted its destination proposing new road connections, improvement of public transport and better digital connectivity in hotels and apartments on the island. With these improvements they try to keep tourism growing on the island, whose number of passengers increased in a 12.9 % from 2015 to 2016. Another improvement the island has proposed for 2017 is its digital transformation, which from now onwards will allow making digital payments through Paypal in lots of establishments. In this edition of FITUR Fuerteventura was awarded the first prize as Best Destination of the Quality System Tourist Destination (Sicted) 2016, by the Tourist Board. This prize is awarded to the organisms that have best promoted the competitiveness of companies, thus boosting the Sicted Project in their area. .10

STELLA CANARIS RESURGE EN MORRO JAbLE CON 3000 CAMAS Y 800 PUESTOS DE TRAbAJO El gran complejo hotelero fundado en los años 70, en el municipio de Pájara, que albergaba un jardín zoológico con gran cantidad de especies animales exóticas y de plantas, y que en la pasada década estaba prácticamente abandonado, hasta su clausura en 2013, ha sido recuperado por el grupo Labranda Hotels & Resorts y está siendo rehabilitado con un obra millonaria —alrededor de los 70 millones de euros— para ser puesto en marcha de nuevo en 2018. Esta rehabilitación aportará 3000 camas más a Morro Jable, unos 800 puestos de trabajo, y frenará la degradación de algunos espacios que estaban dañando gravemente la imagen del paradisíaco paisaje de nuestra isla majorera, tal y como capturara en su trabajo el fotógrafo Cristian Rodríguez en su proyecto Espacio Habitado, basado en la degradación de este complejo hotelero. STELLA CANARIS REAPPEARS IN MORRO JABLE WITH 3000 BEDS The great hotel resort founded in the 70’s in the municipality of Pájara, which hosted a zoological garden with a great deal of exotic animal species and plants, and which was practically abandoned on the last decade until it was closed down in 2013, has been recovered by the group Labranda Hotels and Resorts and is being restored with very expensive works —around 70 million euros— so as to be running again in 2018. This restoration will provide 3000 more beds in Morro Jable and will stop the deterioration of some areas which were seriously damaging the image of the paradisiacal landscape in our «majorera» island, as the photographer Cristian Rodríguez caught in his project «Espacio Habitado», based on the deterioration of this hotel resort.

Los días 9 y 10 de febrero, Fuerteventura acogerá un certamen para premiar el mejor aceite de oliva virgen extra producido en las Islas Canarias. En los últimos años, sobre todo a partir de 2005, en el Archipiélago se apuesta fuerte por la producción del oro líquido, y en 2015 tuvo lugar el primer certamen para premiar la labor de los productores de las islas, recayendo el premio de Mejor Aceite de Oliva Virgen Extra de Canarias sobre el Teguerey Arbequina de Luis Hernández, de Fuerteventura, entre 13 aspirantes al título: 9 de Gran Canaria, 3 de Fuerteventura y 1 de Tenerife. En el año siguiente, 2016, el premio recayó sobre la marca Oleoteide, en su variedad picual, de la Sociedad Cooperativa Cumbres de Abona, recibiendo la Gran Oliva de Oro, esta vez entre 24 muestras presentadas. Para el certamen que se realiza este año en Fuerteventura, el periodo de entrega de muestras terminó el 27 de enero y, hasta la fecha, la decisión estará en manos de un jurado de catadores. El cultivo de olivos es una actividad creciente en las islas, que en la actualidad lleva unas 300 hectáreas registradas, con una producción que ronda los 2 o 3 millones de kilos de aceitunas, que se destinan en su mayoría a la producción de aceite de oliva virgen o virgen extra, unos 200.000 litros. A CONTEST TO AWARD A PRIZE TO THE BEST OLIVE OIL IN FUERTEVENTURA WILL TAKE PLACE IN FEBRUARY On February 9th and 10th Fuerteventura will host a contest to award a prize to the best extra virgin olive oil in The Canary Islands. In the last years, mainly from 2005, the archipelago has been producing liquid gold, and in 2015 it took place the first contest to recognise the work by oil producers in The Islands, the prize to the best extra virgin olive oil being awarded to Teguerey Arbequina, belonging to Luis Hernández, from Fuerteventura, out of the 13 contestants: 9 from Gran Canaria, 3 from Fuerteventura and 1 from Tenerife. The following year, 2016, the prize was awarded to the brand Oleoteide (picula variety), belonging to «Sociedad Cooperativa Cumbres de Abona», getting the «Gran Oliva de Oro», this time out of 24 contestants. For the contest that will take place this year in Fuerteventura, the submission period ended on January 27th, and up to the date of decision the samples will be kept by a jury of tasters. Grape growing is increasing in The Islands, 300 hectares being registered at present, producing about 2 or 3 million kilos of olives, most of them used for the production of extra virgin olive oil, about 200.000 litres.

LA MONTAÑA DE LAS BRUJAS

En anteriores entregas hemos visto que la montaña de Tindaya se convirtió en uno de los principales centro cultuales del pueblo maho. Pero ¿por qué fue la elegida? Foto | photo 1

No existe en la isla otra montaña con sus características físicas, geológicas y paisajísticas. Su ubicación en el territorio, su forma piramidal y su color más claro contrastan con las más cercanas. Fijarnos en ella es inevitable. Tal singularidad —que nos llama la atención en la actualidad— también produjo un efecto persuasivo a la gente que pobló esta isla hace dos mil años. (foto I)

La culpa fue de la naturaleza. Hace veinte millones de años la geografía de Fuerteventura era totalmente diferente a la actual. Tres grandes volcanes en escudo (volcanes constituidos por apilamiento de fluidas coladas de basalto) se habían formado alcanzando grandes alturas. El volcán más septentrional —conocido como edificio Tetir y que posiblemente alcanzó más de tres mil metros de altura— tendría su principal centro emisor cerca de donde hoy está establecido el Puertito de Los Molinos. En el interior de ese gran volcán basáltico se formó un domo de otro material más viscoso —la traquita— que no llegó a la superficie. Y ahí quedó durmiendo hasta que los procesos erosivos desmantelaron el gran volcán y, de sus entrañas, surgió la montaña de Tindaya. El resultado fue Foto | photo 2

maravilloso. Como se puede apreciar en la fotografía (2) a sus espaldas quedaron, como testigos de lo que fuera el gran volcán, La Muda o Tababaire, dejando a Tindaya como un centinela que vigila el paso del tiempo sobre el llano de Esquinzo. Tan curioso nacimiento le ha otorgado una especial consideración como lugar de interés geológico. Y, como vere-

mos, también será la peor de sus desdichas: la belleza de piedra la ha convertido en mercancía. (Foto 3) Pero no nos adelantemos. Mucho antes de que los mercaderes la intentaran destruir, Tindaya se había quedado en una posición geográfica especial: entre ella y las montañas a su oeste —justo por donde hoy pasa la carretera entre La Matilla y La Oliva— se creó el paso natural para los rebaños, del pueblo maho. En otras islas de mayor altitud, las poblaciones indígenas realizaban trashumancias verticales: en invierno los rebaños se cuidaban en las zonas medias y bajas y se subían en verano a las cumbres para aprovechar los pastos. En Fuerteventura el desplazamiento de los rebaños tenía carácter horizontal y, en periodos de sequía, se buscaban los espacios comunales que mejor resguardaban la humedad y las plantas: los malpaíses. ¿Tendrían los pies grabados en Tindaya un carácter de protección para los rebaños similares a los encontrados en el continente africano? Sea como fuere, difícil era sustraerse a su belleza mientras se transitaba a su vera. (Foto 4) Pero las maravillas de Tindaya no acaban ahí. Poco a poco algunas plantas fueron colonizando la montaña, aprovechando las rendijas donde se acumulaba suelo escaso, pero propicio, para que germinaran sus semillas. Así surgieron los curiosos acebuches que se dispersan por sus laderas y cima. El viento y las cabras, los han convertido en una suerte de bonsáis, adoptando formas rastreras, prodigios de la supervivencia. Y en sus laderas también ha buscado abrigo un tesoro botánico: la cuernúa. Esta plantita que parece un cactus y que tiene los tallos cuadrangulares solo está presente en Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Graciosa y Lobos. Su nombre se debe a sus frutos, conformados por dos vainas de color marrón que aparentan cuernos. Es una planta incluida en el catálogo de especies amenazadas de Canarias, con la categoría de especie en peligro de extinción. Tindaya es uno de sus escasos hábitats; la montaña le ha dado hogar y ella se lo agradece con su presencia.

Tindaya, the witches’ mountain (III) In previous issues we have seen that Tindaya mountain became one of the main cultural centres of «maho» people. But, why was it chosen?

There isn’t another mountain with its physical, geological and landscape features on the island. Its location on the land, its pyramid shape and its lighter colour contrast with the nearest ones. Noticing it is unavoidable. Such singularity —which draws our attention at present— also had this persuasive effect on the people who inhabited this island two thousand years ago (picture I). It was nature’s fault. Twenty million years ago, the geography of Fuerteventura was completely different to the current one. Three big shield volcanoes (made of piling up of watery basaltic flow) had been formed, reaching considerable height. The Southernmost volcano—known as «edidicio Tetir» and that could have possibly reached over three thousand meters high— would have its main epicentre near what today is «El Puertito de Los Molinos». In the inside of this basaltic volcano, another domo —made of a more viscous material— was formed —La Traquita— which never erupted. And there it remained dormant until erosive processes dismantled the big volcano, and out of its core the mountain of Tindaya arose. The outcome was wonderful. As you can appreciate on the picture (2), La Muda or Tababaire remained behind, as witnesses of what had been the big volcano, leaving Tindaya as a sentinel that watches the passage of time on the plain of Esquinzo. Such curious emergence was given a special consideration as a spot of geological interest. And, as we’ll see, this would also be the worst of its misfortunes: the beauty of its stone has turned it into freight (Picture 3) But let’s not go so fast. Much before merchants tried to destroy it, Tindaya had got a special geographical position.

Between Tindaya and the South-western mountains —just where today we find the road between La Matilla and La Oliva— a natural path for the migration of livestock of the «maho» people was created. On other higher islands, indigenous populations carried out vertical migrations: in winter, the livestock was looked after in low and medium lands, and in summer they went to the summits in search of pastures. In Fuerteventura, the migration was horizontal, and during droughts, they looked for common areas that kept humidity and plants best: «los malpaíses». Would the foot-shaped engravings on Tindaya have a protective nature for livestock, similar to the ones found in the African continent? Be that as it may, it was difficult to ignore its beauty as one walked by (picture 4) But the wonders of Tindaya don’t end here. Little by little some plants came to invade the mountain, taking advantage of the slits where there was scarce but appropriate soil for seeds to sprout. That way the singular wild olive trees sprouted, scattered around its sides and summit. The wind and the goats have turned them into a kind of bonsais, taking a creeping shape, wonders of survival. On its sides, a botanical treasure has also found shelter: «la cuernúa». This little plant, looking like a cactus and with quadrangular stems, only exists in Lanzarote. Fuerteventura, La Graciosa and Lobos. It’s been named after its fruits, made up of two brown pods in the shape of horns. This plant is included in the catalogue of endangered species in The Canary Islands. Tindaya is one of its few habitats: the mountain has given shelter to it, and its presence shows its gratefulness.
