BLue Flag This year, the Blue Flag Association of Europe awarded seventeen beaches in the Madeira archipelago. The blue flag is a symbol of environmental quality attributed annually to the beaches and marinas that apply and fulfill criteria such as water quality, environmental information and education, environmental management and equipment and security and services.

As for the beaches that this year will raise the blue flag, will be the beach of Porto Moniz, in Funchal, will be the club Naval, Ponta Gorda, Praia Formosa, Areeiro, Lido and Barreirinha. In Santa Cruz, will be the beaches of Palmeira dos Reis Magos. In Machico will be the Ribeira do Natal and in Santana Ribeira do Faial. In São Vicente, the Ponta Delgada Beach will have the quality award, as well as the beach of Ribeira Brava, in the municipality with the same name. In Porto Santo, the Fontinha, the Cabeço da Ponta, Ribeiro Salgado and Calheta will raise the blue flag.

Bandeira Azul A Associação Bandeira Azul da Europa galardoou, este ano, dezassete praias do arquipélago da Madeira. A Bandeira Azul é um símbolo de qualidade ambiental atribuído anualmente às praias e marinas que se candidatam e cumpram critérios como a Qualidade da Água, Informação e Educação Ambiental, Gestão Ambiental e Equipamentos e Segurança e Serviços. Quanto às praias que este ano vão hastear a Bandeira Azul, serão a praia do Porto Moniz, no Funchal, serão o Clube Naval, a Ponta Gorda, a Praia Formosa, o Areeiro, o Lido e a Barreirinha. Em Santa Cruz, serão as praias da Palmeira dos Reis Magos. Em Machico será a Ribeira do natal e em Santana a Ribeira do Faial. Em São Vicente, a praia da Ponta Delgada terá o galardão de qualidade, bem como a praia da Ribeira Brava, no concelho com o mesmo nome. No Porto Santo, a Fontinha, o Cabeço da Ponta, o Ribeiro Salgado e a Calheta vão hastear a bandeira azul. This show dedicated to Numismatics, is part of the Machico commemorations program, 600 years of history and comprises a set of 300 coins, dating from the 15th century to the present.
There are three mills that still work: Sociedade de Engenhos da Calheta, Lda., Companhia dos Engenhos do Norte SORUM (Porto da Cruz) and the Ribeiro Sêco Honey Factory. More recently, the “Engenho Novo” was born in Calheta.

“Festivities and Pilgrimages of Madeira” Until November 24 Itinerant Exhibition of the Ethnographic Museum of Madeira (MEM) In all the parishes religious or pilgrimage festivals are celebrated, consecrated to god, to the Holy Spirit, to Our Lady and to the Saints, represented by a relic or by an image. Normally these festivals take place on weekends and originate in a legend, or were introduced by the first settlers, for they brought with them their saints of devotion, making them holy protectors of a certain locality.

August 13, 14, 15 and 16 | Funchal Festival promoted by the Monte Verde Folklore Group, with the participation of several regional, national and international groups. There will be about 160 musicians and elements of folk groups from eight countries participating, from 13 to 16 August, in Funchal Folk-Arraial do Mundo, a festival that has support from the city hall of Funchal. The event Funchal Folk – Arraial do Mundo is looking for certification of the International Committee for the Organization of Folklore Festivals (CIOFF), linked to UNESCO.

A Semana Europeia de Folclore é um festival de folclore de âmbito internacional, que se realiza todos os anos na cidade do Funchal, no Auditório do Jardim Municipal, da responsabilidade da Instituição e sob tutela da Direção Regional de Turismo – sendo inserido na Festa do Vinho Madeira, com organização do Grupo de Folclore e Etnográfico da Boa Nova.

The “Nossa Senhora da Saúde” festivity, is annually held in the parish of Lameiros, São Vicente. Commonly designated by locals as the "Arraial dos Lameiros", this religious festivity is held between the 1st to 3rd of August. This is a typical religious festivity (“arraial”) that has evolved over the years becoming one of the largest summer festivals in Madeira Island. The religious ritual involving this festivity includes the typical "novenas" [9 masses] and a religious service held inside the church. Outdoors there are food and drink stalls and a lot of entertainment, with performances by local DJ´s and folk dancing groups in addition to other music bands. Entre os dias 1 e 3 de agosto, a paróquia dos Lameiros, em São Vicente, acolhe a festa de Nossa Senhora da Saúde, também conhecida como “Arraial dos Lameiros”. Este é um típico arraial madeirense que nos últimos anos tem vindo a crescer e é já um dos maiores arraiais do verão madeirense. A parte religiosa deste arraial é composta por novenas e missas dentro da igreja. No exterior, existem barracas de comes e bebes, e muita animação proporcionada por DJ’s, grupos folclóricos e outros grupos musicais.

Câmara de Lobos annually hosts the “Black Scabbard Fish Festival”, an event promoted by the parish Council of Câmara de Lobos, highlighting one the islands most typical gastronomic dishes – Black Scabbard fish. This event combines the both local cuisine and entertainment, offering a multifaceted programme including show cooking sessions, the typical food and drink stalls and live entertainment shows. This festivity intends raise public awareness regarding Câmara de Lobos fishing traditions, apart from the gastronomic potential of this tasty and unique type of fish. Machico´s city centre will be the centre stage of another edition of the “Gastronomic Fair” an event organized in order to promote the islands regional gastronomy but in particular, the culinary delicacies typical of this municipality. Madeira will host another edition of the Madeira Wine Rally an important sport event part of the FIA European Rally Trophy Championship. The Columbus Festival is based on the historical re-enactment of the time when this famous merchant lived in Porto Santo Island, recalling his stay in the Madeira Islands. The festival takes place during the month of September, between the 12th and the 14th, in the city of Vila Baleira, and features a set of activities that seek to recall the epic Portuguese Discoveries. The event includes the disembarking of Columbus, a sixteenth-century market with food, crafts, street performances, circus arts, theatrical representations and staging of peace and war ordeals common at the time, games of skill, weapons training, acrobatics and juggling, lots of music and exotic dances, ensuring permanent entertainment and a constant uproar among the various typical characters of this period.
On the first day of the festival hundreds of people gather on the beach to witness the navigator's arrival. The ship lies off the coast and the disembarkation is done by transferring them to shore in small boats. Once the Admiral sets foot on the beach, there is an instant commotion and welcoming reception, which includes speeches, salutations and gifts for the captain-major, music and dance and a theatrical representation of this period’s daily routine. Then, numerous elements representing the various social classes and the clergy form a welcoming parade through the main streets of the burgh, in order to announce the arrival of Columbus on the island.. Other initiatives included in the programme is the sixteenth century market, which is a recreation of the frenzy of markets of that time. Besides the "things to market", it includes a great tumult that goes from food, swordfighting between merchants and traders, a military garrison, trial of heretics and offenders, circus arts,
theatrical scenes and continuous varied entertainment, with popular festivities that comprise a variety of music, as well as European and Oriental dances.

September | 12th, 13th and 14th O Festival Colombo assenta na recriação histórica da época em que este famoso mercador residiu na ilha do Porto Santo, relembrando as suas vivências no Arquipélago da Madeira. Decorre durante o mês de setembro, na cidade de Vila Baleira, com uma série de iniciativas que procuram relembrar a epopeia dos Descobrimentos Portugueses. O evento inclui o desembarque de Colombo, um mercado quinhentista, no qual está presente a gastronomia, artesanato, arruadas, artes circenses, teatralizações e encenações de peripécias de paz e de guerra comuns na época, jogos de destreza, treino de armas, acrobacias e malabarismos, muita música e danças exóticas, garantindo uma animação permanente e um alvoroço constante por entre as várias figuras características da época. Este festival emblemático realiza-se entre os dias 12 a 14 de setembro.

Mercado Quinhentista O mercado quinhentista não é mais do que a recriação do frenesim dos mercados da época. Para além das "cousas de mercar", inclui toda uma azáfama que passa pela gastronomia, pelejas entre mercadores e comerciantes, guarnição militar, julgamento de hereges e infratores, artes circenses, cenas teatrais e animação diversa e constante com arraiais populares e à desgarrada, música variada e danças europeias e orientais.
Programação do Festival Quinta-feira | Desembarque e Cortejo Histórico para a receção a Cristóvão Colombo: Um dos pontos altos do certame é o desembarque de Colombo. Ao cair da noite, largas centenas de pessoas acorrem à praia para assistirem, no primeiro dia do Festival, ao desembarque. O espetáculo inicia-se com o emergir no horizonte de uma réplica de uma caravela Santa Maria de Colombo, trazendo a bordo o navegador genovês e a sua comitiva numa das suas visitas a Porto Santo. A nau fica ao largo e o desembarque faz-se com transbordo para pequenos barcos. Assim que o Almirante pisa o areal, prontamente se inicia a azáfama inerente à sua receção, que inclui diálogos, cortesias e oferendas ao capitão donatário, música, danças e teatralização de peripécias corriqueiras da época. Logo ali, juntam-se inúmeros elementos representativos das várias classes socias e do clero, para um cortejo de receção pelas principais ruas do burgo, com o fim de tornar pública a permanência de Colombo na ilha.

The Madeira Wine Festival is one of the island´s main tourist attractions that pays tribute to this precious nectar and its undeniable socioeconomic significance, event held between August 25th to September 8th.
This event has been commemorated since the late seventies of the last century. It begins in Funchal and includes European Folklore Week, ornamentations, exhibitions and live portraits depicting wine and its crafts and light and traditional music performances. European Folklore Week, an event organized by the Boa Nova Ethnography and Folk Group, is a folklore festival that aims to promote an intercultural gathering and promote ethnographic realities, with the participation of national and foreign groups.

Street Entertainment The city centre of Funchal, especially the central walkway of Avenida Arriaga, will be filled with various adornments comprising several viticulture tools (presses, casks, barrels, grape picking baskets, traditional means of transportation), living portraits and actors who re-enact the winemaking process in Madeira (grape pressing, re-enactment of the regional craftsmen traditional customs), food, Madeira wine tastings and exhibitions and regional handicrafts apart from local folklore groups performances.
Styles of Madeira Wine Madeira Wine is often made as a monovarietal, which due to legislation, determines the wine’s sweetness level. Below we’ve listed the sugar levels associated with each grape. But how we define “sweetness” is not only by the grape and its sugars, there are levels of nuance and balance that must be factored in. There are four levels of sweetness marked on every Madeiran wine label: - Dry (Seco), Medium Dry (Meio Seco); - Medium Sweet (Meio Doce) and Sweet (Doce). (measurements are in grams of sugar per liter) Sercial – Dry (Seco) ≤ 59,3 gr/L Verdelho – Medium Dry (Meio Seco) 54,2 – 78,1 gr/L Boal – Medium Sweet (Meio Doce) 78,1 – 100,04 gr/L Malvasia – Sweet (Doce) ≤ 100,04 gr/L Tinta Negra Mole, makes wines at every level of sweetness

On Saturday morning all attention is focused on the Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, where the Wine Harvest Festival takes place. The harvest takes place on a Madeiran farm, followed by an ethnographic parade with the participation of a large number of folklore and ethnography groups. After the parade the treading of the grapes is re-enacted - participation is free - using a traditional press in a festive atmosphere with lots of musical entertainment and regional cuisine.
Put simply, Madeira is a fortified wine, aged under heat, and produced in the demarcated region of Madeira from approximately 5 distinct grapes. It’s sold as either Dry, Medium Dry, Medium Sweet or Sweet, all of which are marked by their high levels of acidity.

Vindima ao Vivo - 7 de setembro Os festejos deste evento, iniciado no fim dos anos setenta do século vinte, iniciam-se no Funchal e incluem a Semana Europeia de Folclore, decorações, exposições e quadros vivos alusivos ao vinho e suas lides e espetáculos diversos de música ligeira e tradicional.
A encerrar esta Festa realiza-se no Estreito de Câmara de Lobos a Festa das Vindimas.
Na manhã de Sábado as atenções viram-se para o Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, onde se realiza a Festa das Vindimas.

Porto Santo hosts this cultural festivity that intends to promote the various types of wine produced in this island. Taking place at Largo das Palmeiras, where a wine presser will be set up, will be held other activities such as wine tastings and various demonstrations on the wine making process, in addition to an exhibition, depicting the type of equipment’s and tools used in the vine industry. There is also musical entertainment with traditional singing groups.

The village of Caniçal, located on the eastern most part of Madeira Island, is the scene of one of the most peculiar tribute in honour of the local fishermen patron saint – Our Lady of Piety. This religious festivity is depicted by a unique maritime procession in which fishermen’s boats are beautifully decorated with flowers and flags, departing from the pier of Caniçal in direction of the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, where the virgin image is placed on Saturday evening.

Porto Santo Island annually hosts an historical recreation, a tribute in honour of the well-known Genoese merchant - Christopher Columbus, who lived on this island and married Filipa Moniz, daughter of the first Captain Donnee of this island, Bartolomeu Perestrelo. This medieval festival includes an extensive programme comprised by a wide range of musical and theatre shows, as well as exhibitions and parades evoking the age of the Portuguese Discoveries. Pudim de Maracujá Ingredientes:

• 1 Lt de natas • 400g de polpa de

Preparação: • 1 Litre of cream • 400g passion fruit pulp (about 8-10
Ingredients
1) Misturar as natas, o leite condensado e a polpa do maracujá numa taça.
• 1 tin condensed milk 397g • 8 leaves of gelatin
2) Derreter a gelatina numa taça com uma chávena de água morna, adicionando uma folha de cada vez. Assim que a gelatina esteja derretida, pode adicionar o creme de maracujá já preparado, mexendo bem.

4) You can use this method with any other fruit pulp, just replace the passion fruit. Raspberries, strawberries, mango all work well, just pulp the fruit down.

The attraction that people feel for minerals is so strong that they have constantly searched for their polished forms since time immemorial. Over the ages they have been used as personal adornments in rings, necklaces, monarchs’ crowns, and other decorations. Moved by this fascination and a huge passion for collecting, José Berardo has spent 15 years amassing a magnificent assortment of minerals. Determined to share yet another passion with the public, he has set up this exhibition, which consists of about 1000 mineral specimens, mostly from Brazil, Portugal, South Africa, Zambia, Peru, Argentina and North America. This exhibition boasts a vast mineral collection that excels in its association of colours, lustre and geometrical forms in a wide variety of sizes, giving the items an extraordinary beauty. There are also some excellent specimens of petrified wood.

Every year from mid-April to mid-May, Calheta´s Sugar Cane Mill works nonstop, day and night. Sugar canes must be harvested within a few hours; otherwise they will become dry and useless. Currently, labourers book their positions many months in advance as this type of work pays very well.

Sugarcane is the world's largest crop by production quantity, with 1.9 billion tonnes produced in 2016, and Brazil accounting for 41% of the world total. The global demand for sugar is the primary driver of sugarcane agriculture. Sugarcane accounts for almost 80% of sugar produced. Sugarcane predominantly grows in the tropical and subtropical regions. Other than sugar, products derived from sugarcane include falernum, molasses, rum, bagasse, and ethanol. In some regions, people use sugarcane reeds to make pens, mats, screens, and thatch. The young, unexpanded inflorescence of Saccharum edule is eaten raw, steamed, or toasted, and prepared in various ways in certain island communities.
HISTORY Sugarcane was an ancient crop of the Austronesian and Papuan people. It was introduced to Polynesia, Island Melanesia, and Madagascarin prehistoric times via Austronesian sailors. It was also introduced to southern China and India by Austronesian traders at around 1200 to 1000 BC. Merchants began to trade in sugar from India, which was considered a luxury and an expensive spice. The cultivation of sugarcane was the first significant agricultural product in Madeira, and was responsible great prosperity of the island. Madeirans began planting Sicilian-imported sugarcane in the mid-fifteenth century. With the rapid expansion of the sugarcane industry, Funchal became a commercial center of excellence, attended by traders of various nationalities. By 1472 the "White Gold", as sugarcane was referred to, was being directly exported to Flanders, which became its main redistribution center.
The old steam engine has been in operation since 1894. Funchal and Porto da Cruz also have sugarcane factories, which are still in operation. On all the floors of the sugarcane mill one can find labourers working hard to keep the machines running. With tremendous force large gear wheels are set into motion. The noise and stuffy air are not the greatest of working conditions for these labourers, but when a penny turns dime the hard work pays off in due time. The sugarcane is unloaded and transported, with the help of a crane, onto a machine. Then, workers pull the stems with a large rake and dump them into a machine, where they are transported by a conveyor belt to be crushed by gear wheels. The juice is then gathered and processed. The sweet aroma combined with a tang of ethanol implies that the sugarcane is being transformed into “Sugarcane Rum” and “Sugarcane Honey”. With the production of sugarcane, Madeira attracted adventurers and traders from the most remote origins. This sweet exploration was considered, at the time, as the main engine of Madeira's economy. Many foreigners traveled to the region for the sugar business, especially Italians, Basques, Catalans and the Flemish.

The marketing of sugar in Madeira reached its peak in the 1520s, which coincided with the timing of most Flemish works of art to the island. This became a notorious commercial environment of prosperity. Works of gigantic proportions were imported, mostly paintings, triptychs, as well as major images from Bruges, Antwerp and Malines. Silver and copper objects were imported from Flanders and Hainaut. Such exhibits can be found in the Sé Cathedral (Funchal) and in museums such as Arte Sacra. Until the first half of the sixteenth century Madeira was one of the major sugar markets of the Atlantic. With time this sweet market gave way to other markets.

1. LEVADA DO ALECRIM / LAGOA DO VENTO Beginning in the Rabaçal area, this is one of the most beautiful routes, full of endemic species of flora and fauna of Madeira. At the end of the route you will find the waterfall and lagoon of Dona Beja, framed in a magnificent and peaceful space. Enjoy to take a picnic and absorb the good energy of nature.
2. VEREDA DOS BALCÕES (PR11) A short path with an amazing end, at the viewpoint of Balcões, from where it is possible to have a panoramic view where some of the best known peaks of the Island stand out, such as Pico do Areeiro and Pico do Gato. Admire the beauty of the landscape and enjoy the company of Chaffinches, one of the most common bird species in Madeira.

3. LEVADA DO FURADO (PR10) – (Ribeiro Frio – Portela) Undoubtedly one of Madeira’s best-known hikes, which is a bit longer and maybe requires more resistance. The path begins next to the Ribeiro Frio Trout Park, where children can meet a big amount of trouts of several sizes, and ends next to the portela viewpoint, where you can appreciate the iconic Rocha da Penha D’Águia.
4. LEVADA DO REI (PR18) Starting in the Santana area, one of the most characteristic and traditional of Madeira Island, this route takes the hikers on a fascinating adventure through the laurissilva forest of Madeira. In the end, the lagoons and waterfalls form an extraordinary environment to admire the beauty of nature.the sea.

Estes percursos, ou caminhadas "Levadas", são ótimos para explorar a Natureza da Madeira e cansar as crianças também. LEVADA DO ALECRIM / LAGOA DO VENTO A Levada do Alecrim insere-se no grupo das levadas que têm o seu início na zona do Rabaçal, onde pode também percorrer as Levadas das 25 Fontes, do Risco e do Paul II. Para iniciar a Levada do Alecrim basta percorrer apenas uns metros na estrada alcatroada, no sentido do Posto Florestal do Rabaçal, seguindo no trajeto logo à sua direita. Durante o percurso é possível encontrar os sempre magníficos túneis de urzes que apesar de cercarem o trajeto, criam cenários únicos envolventes. Ao longo do trajeto é possível encontrar várias zonas de observação de paisagens profundas, sendo o Vale do Rabaçal e o da Ribeira da Janela os cenários mais comuns. Antes de chegar à Lagoa da “Dona Beja” é possível encontrar à direita acesso para a subida para o Lajeado e à esquerda a descida para a Lagoa do Vento, trajeto este que exige alguma experiência ao caminhante uma vez que é de dificuldade elevada.

A Beleza Natural da Madeira LEVADA DO FURADO (PR10) Ribeiro Frio - Portela Esta levada, com início no Ribeiro Frio, é uma das mais antigas levadas públicas, adquirida pelo Estado para irrigar os campos agrícolas do Porto da Cruz. Este trilho, que corre ao longo de uma cota de 860 m de altitude, termina com uma descida até à Portela. No início do passeio, o caminhante deverá acompanhar a esplanada da Levada da Serra do Faial até à casa de divisão de águas, descendo depois até à zona dos Lamaceiros. O percurso acaba no miradouro da Portela, no concelho de Machico. Ao longo desta levada podemos contemplar algumas das espécies da floresta natural da ilha – a Floresta Laurissilva, nomeadamente o Loureiro, o Folhado, o Til ou a Orquídea da Serra. Também é possível avistar o pequeno Bis-bis e o destemido Tentilhão. Com sorte, poderá encontrar o Pombo Trocaz (Columba Trocaz), espécie endémica da Madeira.
LEVADA DO REI (PR18) Levada do Alecrim
VEREDA DOS BALCÕES (PR11) Este pequeno trilho tem 1,5 Km, uma duração de 1:30 horas e tem início no Ribeiro Frio, seguindo a Levada da Serra do Faial até o miradouro dos Balcões, onde deparar-se-á com um esplêndido cenário coberto pelos vales verdejantes da Floresta Laurissilva, floresta indígena da Madeira.
O percurso inicial, que atravessa uma zona florestal mista preenchida por alguma vegetação indígena, permite observar as paisagens agrícolas de São Jorge e de Santana. A partir de metade do percurso, a levada, que percorre a encosta interior da ilha, entra então numa área abundante de floresta natural. Na parte final do passeio, a zona do Ribeiro Bonito testemunha a primitiva riqueza natural da Madeira, patente no denso coberto vegetal da Floresta Laurissilva. O intenso ambiente natural, repleto de água e de vegetação, propicia o desenvolvimento de árvores como Tis, Loureiros ou Vinháticos e de aves como o Bis-bis. Aproveite o passeio para visitar também o centenário Moinho de Água de São Jorge.

Em dias de boa visibilidade, poderá ser avistada a Cordilheira Central da Ilha, destacando-se os dois picos mais altos, o Pico do Areeiro (1817m) e o Pico Ruivo (1861m), assim como a Penha D´Águia.
O trilho para a Levada do Rei tem início na Estação de Tratamento de Águas nas Quebradas, em São Jorge, e termina junto à Madre da Levada, no Ribeiro Bonito.

Picarouto Viewpoint Santana
Located in the Forest Park of Pico das Pedras along the road that connects to Achada do Teixeira, the viewpoint of Picarouto displays a magnificent view from São Jorge to Ponta de São Lourenço, with emphasis on the rock formation of Penha d'Águia , in Porto da Cruz. Here, one can view the Massif Central Mountain. The road is open every day between 7am and 9pm.
Localizado no Parque Florestal do Pico das Pedras ao longo da estrada que faz a ligação à Achada do Teixeira, o miradouro do Picarouto exibe uma magnífica panorâmica desde São Jorge até a Ponta de São Lourenço, com destaque para a formação rochosa da Penha d’Águia, no Porto da Cruz. Do lado oposto poderá contemplar o Maciço Montanhoso Central. A estrada encontra-se aberta todos os dias entre as 7:00 e as 21:00.

Organizado pela Estalagem da Ponta do Sol, o festival assume-se como um evento de novas tendências musicais, e decorre todos os anos entre os meses de julho e setembro. Serão 10 concertos que irão acontecer entre o início de julho e o último sábado de setembro. Acontecem aos sábados e em algumas quartasfeiras, sempre às 22h00. As entradas têm um consumo mínimo no bar, e é sempre necessário enviar nome para a guest list. Madeira Island Magazine: Nuno, o que são para si os Concertos L? Como surgiu este conceito e com que objetivos? Nuno Barcelos: Os Concertos L são mais uma mostra de música nova, do que propriamente um festival, acontecendo num local onde se reúne um público muito especial, numa troca de ideias e energia. O conceito associado passa pela procura de novas tendências, direcionado para um público realmente apreciador de música, de todo o tipo, sendo que quase todos os concertos são também de artistas em estreia absoluta na região, e até por vezes em Portugal, e (são) totalmente assumidos pela Estalagem da Ponta do Sol, não tendo intuito comercial ou lucrativo. Os Concertos L são um projeto único em Portugal, em que um hotel transforma-se numa casa da cultura séria, que investe numa programação praticamente gratuita para o público, com uma série de estreias musicais regionais, nacionais e até internacionais. A criação de um hotel na vila pitoresca da Ponta do Sol surgiu do desejo do diretor geral André Diogo e dos seus sócios, de criar um projeto que fosse mais que um hotel, da necessidade de criar algo diferente e trazer mais movimentação à própria vila, através da criação do projeto dos Concertos L em 2007 (se bem que já em 2006 tinhamos já a programação de alguns concertos, num formato mais pequeno que o atual), e da parceria com o Madeira Dig, começámos a criar uma série de produtos culturais. Nessa altura, na vila da Ponta do Sol, praticamente não existiam espaços comerciais ou uma programação cultural mais variada, e de certa forma este evento e o seu público também acabou por ser um impulsionador para o aparecimento de novos espaços comerciais (bares, restaurantes, entre outros, etc), e de novas ofertas culturais e de animação local, e um potenciador do desenvolvimento local. MIM: Quais são os critérios de seleção de artistas/projetos musicais para a programação em cada edição? NB: A nossa seleção de artistas/projetos musicais é sempre uma composição eclética, de vários géneros musicais, muitos deles em estreia regional ou nacional (em termos de artistas internacionais) e também de apresentação de artistas (regionais e nacionais) com trabalho novo, autoral e original, sendo até algumas vezes produzido pelos artistas cá em forma de residência artística, sendo assim os Concertos L são também um espaço de liberdade, criatividade e criação. Os Concertos L são uma mostra da nova música portuguesa, das novas tendências musicais, com destaque para a música portuguesa e música portuguesa falada nos países africanos, passando também por música internacional, com artistas reconhecidos pela sua qualidade musical e criatividade pelo mundo fora. São mais de são concertos em 11 anos, onde a qualidade dos projetos musicais é indiscutível, e o público, tendo em conta a história, qualidade e oferta musical deste evento, confia na nossa seleção. MIM: Qual o impacto e importância desta mostra musical, na cultura e desenvolvimento local, e para a programação cultural no panorama regional? NB: A vila da Ponta do Sol é sem dúvida na atualidade uma referência em termos de programação musical e de oferta cultural fora do Funchal, e na Região. O balanço é muito positivo, após 11 anos; vive-se uma altura em que o madeirense procura a música do aqui e agora, e fora do circuito comercial das rádios e de outros eventos do panorama cultural regional; nasceram festivais com música mais alternativa, atual e contemporânea, o que prova que, quando começaram os Concertos L em 2008, onde temos procurado sempre trazer música portuguesa e internacional contemporânea, de qualidade, muitas vezes sendo projetos em estreia absoluta regional ou até mesmo ao nível nacional, iniciámos um processo de evolução na forma como a música é trazida ao público aqui na Região. E temos sem dúvida o melhor público da Madeira, genuinamente interessado em apreciar a oferta musical que trazemos a este jardim situado a 80 metros de altura do centro da Ponta do Sol, com vista privilegiada para o mar e para a vila.

ESTALAGEM DA PONTA DO SOL A Estalagem da Ponta do Sol tem um conceito de um hotel de escape. Situada no topo de um penhasco, com uma vista espetacular sobre o mar e para a vila da Ponta do Sol. O hotel resulta da renovação de uma velha quinta, tendo sido o ojetivo integrar os edifícios originais num estilo contemporâneo e distinto. Miguel Sobral 'Drawing Resizes Time' 'O Desenho redimensiona o tempo'
Biography | Biografia Miguel Sobral was born in Setúbal and lives in Madeira. He attended the Fine Arts Course at Universidade da Madeira in 2001. He holds the degree in Visual and Technological Education from Escola Superior de Educação Jean Piaget. He teaches visual arts in school and is an educational curator at Associação CRIAMAR, wich fosters social solidarity by promoting the development of children and young people. He has exhibited individually and collectively since 1996, in Portugal and abroad. He is a scenographer at Porventura Teatro and an actor at Teatro Experimental do Funchal (TEF) and Teatro do Avesso. Miguel is also an illustrator, of which we highlight the work done for the poetry collection (De)Corrente, Editorial Minerva, for the Direction of Artistically Educational Eervices of Madeira, and the illustration for the children poetry book entitled "The Blue World of Apple Mary", from Rosário Antunes, Chiado Editora.

No campo das Artes Plásticas tem exposto de forma individual e coletiva desde 1996, no espaço nacional e internacional. No âmbito do teatro tem desenvolvido funções de cenógrafo Porventura Teatro - e ator no Teatro Experimental do Funchal (TEF) e no Teatro do Avesso da Associação Avesso. 'Human', an exhibition by the artist Miguel Sobral, in the WELL.COM coffee bar, gathers drawing works created by observing the gestures, the postures and the character that some bodies are to emanate when observed at a distance, captied in their tasks more Everyday and idle. Miguel Sobral presents in this exhibition about 200 quick drawings of human figure movements executed to graphite, pen and charcoal. Most of the immediate and fragmented captures of a few seconds only, but we can also observe 5 more lengthy records, performed in the presence of the model, which the artist tries to capture the essential of his movement, composing and (un) balancing the Set of forces between the lines and the stain, space and shape. Drawing imposes itself for Miguel Sobral as something transversal to his day-to-day, a process of continuous coexistence with his particular state of feeling and seeing others. Most of these works were carried out in a discreet way, at a distance, without the model realizing that their simplest actions were being recorded. An act of drawing "camoufled" and fast, which seeks in the movement in the essence of the fleeting presence of those who pass without making pose, gestures and habits of anonymous and real people.
Humano, uma exposição do artista Miguel Sobral no espaço WELL.COM, reúne trabalhos de desenho criados através da observação dos gestos, das posturas e do carácter que alguns corpos paraecem emanar quando observados à distância, capatados nas suas tarefas mais quotidianas e ociosas. Expostos estão cerca de 200 desenhos rápidos de movimentos de figura humana executados a grafite, caneta e carvão. Na sua maioria captações imediatas e fragmentadas, de alguns segundos apenas, mas também se podem observar 5 registos mais demorados, realizados na presença do modelo, doas quais o artista tenta captar o essencial do seu movimento, compondo e (des)equilibrando o jogo de forças entre as linhas e a mancha, espaço e forma. Desenhar impõe-se para Miguel Sobral como algo transversal ao seu dia-a-dia, um processo de coexistência contínua com o seu estado particular de sentir e ver os outros. Grande parte destas obras forma realizadas de forma discreta, à distância, sem que o modelo se apercebesse que as suas ações mais simples estavam a ser registadas. Um ato de desenhar “camuflado” e rápido, que busca no movimento na essência da presença fugaz dos que passam sem fazer pose, gestos e hábitos de gente anónima e real.

The set of drawings presented by the artist, except for one, from an existing viewpoint in Funchal, the Pinnacle, was born of the short-lived visits that Miguel Sobral accomplished to the pleasures, in the context of an artistic residence, one of the most distinctive Sheds the cultural program of the gallery, where the artists invited to exhibit create their works in the surrounding environment of the gallery and the Quinta dos Prazeres, in Calheta. There are twenty drawings-fragments that present readings of a locality-garden, where the boundaries with the agricultural fields are mixed with the lush gardens, inspired also by the work of the ethnobotanical survey initiated by the EP. Manuel de Nóbrega, whose herbarium is contained in the collection of this pedagogical farm. Miguel Sobral shows, with these works, that drawing is nowadays an act of resistance, in an era of sophisticated smartphones and digital art, an attitude in the way of relating, thinking and grasping the world, through the tip of the pencil or other material riscador. The Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) is the rarest seal and one of the most endangered mammal species in the world, with less than 600 of them spread throughout its distribution range. The Mediterranean monk seal was abundant in Madeira in the 15th century, unfortunately it was persecuted for its fat and skin and almost disappeared entirely. By the middle of the 20th century, as a result of fishing pressure also, monk seals remained only in remote and inaccessible parts of the archipelago. In the 1980s, it was estimated that only 6-8 individuals remained in the Desertas Islands.

NOTA : Desde 2014 que está a decorrer o projeto Life Madeira lobo-marinho (LIFE13 NAT/ES/000974) proposto pela Fundação CBD-Habitat e do qual a IFCM é parceira. Este projeto terá a duração de 4 anos e é cofinanciado pelo programa Life+ Instrumento Financeiro da Comunidade Europeia. O projeto LIFE Madeira lobo-marinho tem como principais objetivos:
1 - Consolidar o trabalho de conservação em relação a este mamífero, realizado desde 1988: Promoção de um bom funcionamento da rede de informação e de emergência do lobo-marinho; Limpeza de lixo marinho das grutas e praias utilizadas por estes animais; Embarques em barcos de pesca e marítimo-turísticas para melhor perceber eventuais conflitos entre a espécie e as atividades humanas. 2 - Aplicar novos sistemas de monitorização, não invasivos, utilizados na Mauritânia, como as câmaras fotográficas automáticas no interior de grutas e o uso de um sistema de seguimento dos animais via satélite. 3 - Elaborar um plano de ação para a conservação do lobo-marinho na Madeira. In 1988 the Madeira Natural Park Service began a programme to recover this population, leading to the creation of the Desertas Islands Nature Reserve in 1990, as well as the substitution of non-selective fishing techniques, which slowed the decline and prevented imminent extinction. Since then the programme has been maintained and numbers have gradually increased, up to the current estimate of 30-40 individuals. Characteristics Size: It is the second largest phocid after the elephant seal. The male can weigh up to 300kg and reach 2.80m in length. Females are slightly smaller. The pups are approximately 1m in length at birth. Fur: These seals owe their name to their plain colouring, said to resemble monk’s robes. Males are black above and whitish below, while females are dark grey above and paler below Diet: Their diet is varied and includes fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods. Females only fast for the first few days of their pups’ lives, before venturing out to sea in search of food. Habitat: Centuries ago, the monk seal lived in large colonies on sandbanks and open beaches. However, due to the destruction of this type of habitat and the persecution and disturbance they have suffered, they currently use remote and inaccessible caves throughout their area of distribution, including the Madeira archipelago. Their original habitat covered the entire Madeira archipelago, including both the main island and the Desertas Islands.

Morfologia - Quando nascem têm um aspeto lanoso, são de cor negra com uma mancha branca umbilical. Têm cerca de 100 cm e pesam 15 a 20 Kg. Com a idade e as sucessivas mudas de pelo, a coloração vai-se alterando e pode variar do preto ao fulvo apresentando geralmente uma mancha esbranquiçada na zona ventral. Podem atingir os 3 metros de comprimento e chegar aos 350 Kg. Distribuição - Atualmente e devido à extinção desta espécie na maioria dos locais existentes, o lobo-marinho encontra-se essencialmente no Nordeste do Mar Mediterrâneo e no Atlântico: na costa Noroeste africana, no Cabo Branco e no arquipélago da Madeira (Ilhas Desertas e a ilha da Madeira). Habitat - São mamíferos marinhos que dependem de terra para descanso e reprodução. Utilizam preferencialmente praias no interior de grutas, contudo nos últimos anos voltaram a utilizar ocasionalmente praias abertas. Embora utilizem com frequência a zona costeira, podem efetuar deslocamentos de algumas centenas de quilómetros em pleno mar. Dieta - Alimentam-se de peixe, cefalópodes e crustáceos, fazendo-o preferencialmente na zona costeira. Para isso, efetuam mergulhos que podem durar 15 minutos. Reprodução - Geralmente andam isolados ou em pequenos grupos tornando-se mais gregários durante a época de reprodução. As fêmeas procuram um mesmo local para terem e acompanharem as crias durante os seus primeiros meses de vida. Os machos aproveitam esta época para tentar, com maior sucesso, o acasalamento. Os nascimentos ocorrem com maior frequência em outubro/novembro, embora possam registar-se ao longo do ano. O período de gestação ronda os 9 meses e refere-se a uma única cria. O período de amamentação pode ir até aos 4 meses. A maturidade sexual nas fêmeas é atingida, de uma forma geral, aos 4 anos. Estatuto Legal - Lobo-marinho e o seu habitat estão legalmente protegidos por legislação regional, europeia e internacional.
Surveillance of the conservation status of the species and its habitat The monk seal has begun recolonising the main island of Madeira, which is bringing it into contact with human activities such as fishing and maritime tourism, mainly scuba diving and cetacean watching, not to mention contact with the general population.
O QUE FAZER QUANDO OBSERVA UM LOBO-MARINHO? Se vir um lobo-marinho, não se esqueça de que é um animal selvagem. Não é um animal agressivo por natureza mas poderá sê-lo ao sentir-se ameaçado. É curioso e poderá procurar interagir com o que o rodeia. No caso de se estar no mar, deve-se manter a distância e evitar perturbar os animais, ou se possível sair calmamente para terra. Deve-se evitar entrar em grutas que se sabe serem utilizadas por lobos-marinhos. Procurar alimentar os lobos-marinhos não é aconselhado. No caso de se estar a fazer caça submarina, deve-se libertar do peixe e procurar outro local para a caça. O contato com cães, potenciais transmissores de doenças, deverá ser evitado ao máximo. Contate o IFCN para que se tomem as providências adequadas em caso de ser necessário intervir.

Usefull information if you wanna plant: The two species are relatively simple to distinguish at closer look, due to a number of characteristics such as size, color of its inflorescence and flowers, and habitat. The Echium candicans presents itself as a shrub which can reach 2 meters. They generally appear in temperate and humid areas of Madeira, between 800-1400m in altitude. These plants bloom between April and August. The Echium nervosum grows naturally on the islands of Madeira, Porto Santo and uninhabited islands such as Desertas. They basically grow in areas under the influence of Mediterranean climate between 0 and 300m in altitude.
Distinguishing traits Even without the massive terminal flower spikes, Pride of Madeira’s striking form and attractive foliage fill the garden and complement other plants year-round. Woody stems project elegantly, though loosely, out, finished with narrow furry leaves growing to the ends. Bountiful flower clusters arrive in spring, beckoning bees, birds and butterflies to the garden.

The legends of Christopher Columbus have become notorious in history with many people debating whether he was the son of a Genoa weaver born in Italy or was he born in Portugal, since he never spoke or wrote in his native language of Italian and always wrote in Portuguese and later Spanish.

Much of Christopher Columbus’ early life is unknown except for when he first came to Portugal and then the colonized islands of Madeira and Porto Santo. It was here on the island of Porto Santo where it said he learned a lot about sailing and the various wind patterns from his father in law Bartolomeo Perestrello who was the Portuguese navigator and discoverer of the island of Porto Santo. Here on the small island of Porto Santo, Columbus met his future wife and mother of his son Filipa Moniz Perestrello. It is unknown how Columbus first met Filipa since she came from a noble Portuguese family who socialized in only certain circles of society, however the noble women married the commoner Christopher Columbus which elevated his status both in Portugal and in Europe. The marriage between Filipa and Christopher resulted in their son Diogo being born, who became his father’s second in command on board his discoveries in the new world. After marrying Columbus, Filipa granted access to her father’s maps, diagrams and diary entries from the early years of exploration. It is said Columbus spent hours, days and weeks going over all the documents related to wind patterns and locations of new discovered lands in the hope of finding a shorter route to the East. It is uncertain why Columbus never stayed with his wife and family in Porto Santo, especially when he was the son-in-law of the governor of the island, a title that was given to Filipa’s father by the King of Portugal and to be passed on to the heirs of the family. His ambition to discover new lands and create new wealth for himself was a driving force in his desire to reach the unknown.
After courting the King of Portugal for a couple of years with no avail Columbus then leaves Portugal for Spain a rival neighbouring nation where he presented his case for discovery of a new path to the East. Columbus never let anything derail his vision and time and time again he approached the Royal Court and asked for them to finance his journey. In 1494 it was to be Columbus’ year when King Ferdinand and Queen Isabela agreed to fund his venture in the name of the crown. It is then that Columbus and his oldest son Diogo with a crew of about 100 men and 3 ships set sail for the new world. Filipa died at the age of 58 to tuberculosis and was most likely heartbroken from her husband’s long voyages keeping them apart for years. There is a house (Casa de Colombo) on the island of Porto Santo which is believed to be the dwelling where Columbus, his wife and family lived during his years on the island. It is open to the public and has become a neat spot to walk around on the cobblestone streets and imagine a faraway time where Columbus and some of Portugal’s greatest navigators walked and looked out to the ocean only to discover new lands, people and cultures. The home remained in the family after Columbus’ death where the noble Portuguese family continued to govern over the island for generations. Columbus’ oldest son Diogo wrote a biography about his father and the voyages he accompanied him on. It was Diogo who courted the Spanish court to reinstate his father’s titles, dowries and inheritance after Columbus died. A direct line of ancestry exists to this day from Christopher Columbus and his wife Filipa Moniz with many titles still in use by the heirs of Columbus in Spain.

Cristóvão Colombo Navegador Genovês. Visitou a Madeira em 1853.
Biografia Cristóvão Colombo (1451-1506) foi um navegador genovês, comandante da frota espanhola que chegou às terras do “Novo Mundo”, em 12 de outubro de 1492. Acreditando ter alcançado as Índias pelo caminho do Ocidente, morreu sem saberque encontrara terras de um novo continente, na região da atual América Central. Possuía conhecimentos de geografia, astronomia, e matemática, mas é discutível que tenha frequentado a Universidade de Pádua. Dedicou-se ao desenho e a leitura de livros sobre navegação, entre eles O Milhão, de Marco Polo. O exemplar que lhe pertenceu, cheio de anotações nas margens, pode ser visto na Biblioteca Colombiana de Sevilha.

O princípio da carreira de navegador Com 14 anos começou a navegar em navios mercantes que percorriam a costa da Ligúria. Com 22 anos, comandou um navio fretado por Renato II D’Anjour, pretendente ao trono de Nápoles, com o objetivo de interceptar uma embarcação do rei de Aragão, João II. Em 1476, chegou a Portugal. Em 1477 participou de uma expedição que chegou à Islândia. Nos 10 anos em que ficou em Portugal (1476-1485) desenhou mapas e fez várias viagens, uma para Génova e outras ao longo da costa africana. Cuidou dos interesses de importantes firmas genovesas.
A famosa expedição rumo às Índias Após ter se tornado viúvo, Colombo resolve pedir o apoio de D. João II para a sonhada expedição às Índias e assim vencer o monopólio comercial da época. Em 1485 o Conselho português rejeitou o projeto. Obstinado, foi tentar a sorte na Espanha.Por indicação do Duque de Medina Celi, Dom Luís de la Cerda, que era armador em Sevilha, que consultou a Rainha Isabel, esta pediu-lhe que mandasse o projeto para Córdoba, sede do reino, acompanhado de seu autor. A comissão encarregada pelos reis de estudar o projeto levou alguns anos. A resposta negativa veio em 1490. Em 1492, após a Espanha ter conquistado Granada, dos mouros, a viagem voltou novamente a ser cogitada pela Rainha Isabel. O financiamento coube a banqueiros italianos que estavam na Espanha. Certo do êxito, Colombo pediu 10% dos ganhos obtidos das terras que descobrisse. Queria também para si e todos os descendentes, os títulos de Almirante do Mar, Vice-rei e Governador da nova região. Era o dia 17 de abril de 1492.

No dia 3 de agosto de 1492, Colombo partiu do porto de Palos de La Frontera, com três navios: Santa Maria, uma nau maior e duas caravelas menores, Pinta e Nina. De volta à Espanha, o navegador foi recebido com festas e honrarias. A data foi posteriormente conhecida como o descobrimento da América. No dia 25 de setembro de 1493, teve início a segunda viagem, que partiu de Cádiz, com 17 navios e provisão para seis meses. Foi preparada por Dom João da Fonseca, nomeado “superintendente para os negócios das Índias”. Depois de 40 dias avistaram a ilha que foi chamada de Dominica. Colombo percorreu as Pequenas Antilhas e aproximou-se de Hispaniola. Explorou a costa meridional da atual Cuba e descobriu a Jamaica. Em São Domingo, na República Dominicana, fundou Isabela, a primeira povoação europeia nas terras descobertas. Cristóvão Colombo enfrentou mais duas viagens, uma em 1498 e a última em 1502, propondo mais uma vez chegar às Índias. Avistou a região do atual canal do Panamá, a menos de 70 km, do Pacífico. Só regressou à Espanha em 12 de setembro de 1504.
Vida pessoal e ligação com a Ilha da Madeira e Porto Santo
Colombo aportou à Madeira em ligação directa com os negócios do açúcar que por esses tempos se intensificavam. Havia chegado a Lisboa em 1476, procurando integrar-se na colónia genovesa. Nesta década de 70, a produção açucareira da Madeira ascendia já às 20.000 arrobas, sendo intenso o comércio açucareiro. Vários florentinos e genoveses, como Francisco Calvo, Misser Leão e Baptista Lomellini, eram até produtores açucareiros na Madeira. Em 1478, Colombo desloca-se à Madeira, trabalhando para Paolo di Negro, em negócios intermediários de açúcar, com destino a Ludovico Centurione. Casou-se com Filipa Perestrello-Muniz, parente da família real dos Bragança e filha de Bartolomeu Perestrello, navegador que descobriu a ilha da Madeira, para onde o casal se transferiu em 1479. No ano seguinte, nasceu seu primeiro filho, Diego. Em 1483 fica viúvo. Alguns anos mais tarde conheceu a espanhola Beatriz Enriquez de Haraña, com quem nunca chegou a se casar, mas que lhe deu um filho, o seu futuro biógrafo Fernando. Cristóvão Colombo faleceu em Valladolid, Espanha, no dia 20 de maio de 1506.

Loquat Liquor From Quinta Pedagógica dos Prazeres Distinguished In International Competition
Madeira’s loquat liquor received a silver medal in the international wine and spirits competition CINVE 2019, which was recently held in Spain. This is its second medal this year, having won a gold medal in a national contest. This is not the first time that Quinta Pedagógica dos Prazeres has competed in such a contest. The loquat liquor obtained a silver medal in 2016 and the liquor of Roses won its gold standing in 2018. The IWSC has a panel of more than 400 jurors from around 30 countries and experts in different areas, who try all wines and spirits for about 7 months.

In 'International Wine & Spirit Competition' That’s right! Ten! Ten Madeiran wines were distinguished in the International Wine & Spirit Competition, one of the biggest and best wine and spirits competitions in the world, which took place in London recently. Madeira won six gold medals: Blandy’s 1989 Boal, Cossart Gordon’s 1985 Sercial, Justino’s 1996 Harvest Boal, Justino’s 1997 Sercial Collection, Pereira D'Oliveira’s 1998 Tinta Negra, and Pereira D'Oliveira’s 1994 Verdelho. The 2005 Boal Harvest by H. M. Borges, Sucrs. Lda. and Pereira D'Oliveira’s Boal 1988 had already been awarded with silver medals. Two bronze medals were also awarded to Blandy's 5 YO Reserva and Marks & Spencer Madeira Finest Medium Rich 5YO.

Folk Dance Group Monte Verde Awarded In Lituania Festival The MonteVerde Folk Dance Group (GFMV) was present at the VIII International Folk Contest Festival (The Flower of the Sun Festival, from 01 to 07 July 2019) where it was awarded with three prizes. Eleven countries participated in the competition namely Chile, Hungary, India, Latvia, Poland, Serbia, Spain, Slovakia, Turkey, Lithuania and Portugal. The Federation of International Dance Festivals was founded on October 5, 2012 to establish a system of cooperation of dance festivals around the world, seek ways for mutual development, and build a global network of dance festivals through exchanges among the famous dance festivals around the world. FIDAF is a non-profit organization formed by representatives of dance festivals across five continents with the aim of promoting and advancing their dance festivals.

Organized by Madeira Club Sports, the Rali Vinho da Madeira (RVM) was first run in 1979 as a FIA European Championship Rally, and is one of the top events in the Portuguese Rally Championship. The Rali Vinho da Madeira brings the special qualities of the island to life. Competitors challenge their driving skills on spectacular asphalt stages in a World Heritage setting of sun, sea, and exquisite natural beauty. More than 30 000 local and international motorsport lovers gather in the heart of historical Funchal for the special starting stage, and follow the rally into its demanding sinuous mountain stages and micro-climates over three exciting days of competition. The book of rally memories is filled with many unforgettable RVM moments in the European Championship beloved by crowds. The stages of Chão da Lagoa, Paúl and the breathtaking descent of Encumeada are the highlights of the event route, all of which are “meeting points” for thousands of fans who are at all times orderly and supportive of the event.
20th International Regatta Canary - Madeira
Classic Car Rally Each year the Madeira Classic Car Club (Clube de Automóveis Clássicos da Madeira) holds its annual Tour of Madeira Classic Car Rally. This year it will take place between September 7th and 8th. The event is recognized by PAKF (Portuguese Automobile & Karting Federation) and has become an annual sensation.
What is it? Classic rallying is a type of road rally suitable for most standard classic cars, with no special equipment needed. These rallies are more about enjoyment than speed, and can be a good introduction to historic motorsport (which also include race meetings, classic endurance, and hill climbing). A classic road rally is not about speed; in fact, there are severe penalties for finishing too early. The idea of a rally is to travel from a point to another within a certain time (time controls), not too fast or too slow, trying to match a speed average set by the organizers.
Classification? Classic rallies can be classified as regularity rallies, endurance rallies, and touring rally. In regularity rallies, a series of intermediate time controls must be visited in the correct order. At each control point, the team stops and has time recorded on a card. At the end of the event, the competitor who has visited all these controls and who has the fewest early or late penalties overall is the winner. Note that with the introduction of electronics, control points can be replaced by sensors which
trigger the cars at their given time thanks to a transponder, enabling much accurate penalties system. Endurance rallies are long-distance motor rallies for vintage, historic and classic cars. Touring rallying is all about enjoying countryside and the company of classic car owners, which is the case of Madeira’s Tour of Madeira Classic Car Rally. Classic rallies try to relive some of the great events of the 1960s and 1970s when man and machine were often alone for hours, even days, with little support. Cars now have expendable parts and a gearbox can be changed in twenty minutes. On the long tough rallies of yesteryear drivers had to drive 3000 km exclusively up and down the French Alps, for example, against the clock for most of the way, and look after the gearbox and every other part of the car, since changing them was impossible. As a rule participants are given a road map, a straightforward ball and arrow system to show the route. The map also provides a diagrammatic representation of the road junction.
Madeira hosts another edition of the international Regatta Canary-Madeira, a true cultural exchange that brings together hundreds of sailing enthusiasts. This is one of the oldest and the biggest sports events, held since 1978 by Funchal Naval Club jointly organised by the Real Club Náutico of Gran Canaria, in collaboration with Madeira Tourism Board, APRAM - Ports of Madeira, among others. The official start will take place on September 4th from the Marina of Lanzarote. The programme included, among other recreational activities, as to promote the island’s natural heritage, from the sea to the mountains, in addition to several hikes along the Laurissilva forest.

curiosity In 2009, this garden received the name of Eng. Rui Vieira, an agronomist who died that year and was the founder of this garden in 1960. This homage recognises his dedication to the public cause and to scientific research.
Since the 17th century Madeira Island had been waiting for a botanical garden, a dream that came true in 1960. Located 3 km from the centre of Funchal, at Quinta do Bom Sucesso – a private Quinta belonging to the Reid’s family – where the climate conditions are much in favour of exuberant vegetation. With about 72,685 m2, the Botanical Garden boasts harmonious forms, contrasting colours and more than 2000 exotic plants. It is owned by the Regional Government of Madeira and, apart from being a beautiful place of leisure, it also serves as a Science and Culture Centre. Throughout the gardens visitors can find the plants labelled with their scientific names, common name and origin. There are five main areas to visit:
1 - Indigenous and endemic plants: This is the place where one can see plants exclusively from Madeira and other Atlantic islands, like the Azores, Canaries and Cape Verde. There are about 100 indigenous plants exhibited, ranging from those characteristically found on the more exposed slopes of Madeira to those typical of mid-altitude vegetation and trees found in Madeira’s natural forest, the ‘Laurissilva’ forest.
2 - Tree Garden: Here you find plants from ecologically opposed areas of the Earth, like the Himalaya and the Tropics.
3 - Succulents: The capacity of storing water is what distinguishes the plants in this department, most of them coming from South America.
4 - Tropical/ Cultivated/Aromatic/ Medicinal: Several tropical and subtropical fruit trees, such as mango, papaya and avocado, as well as coffee trees, sugar cane and popular medicine plants can be seen in this area.
In 2017, the Botanical Garden celebrated its anniversary with renovated lakes, a garden of Portuguese camellias and access to information via smartphone. This is a simply unforgettable garden and a mandatory presence in one’s itinerary when visiting Madeira.

O Jardim Botânico da Madeira – Eng.º Rui Vieira, com uma área ajardinada de aproximadamente 80.000m2, reúne uma elevada quantidade e diversidade de espécies vegetais (cerca de 3000) oriundas de todos os continentes.

Este fantástico jardim é composto por várias árvores e arbustos ornamentais, uma área com orquídeas, relvados, miradouros, anfiteatro para atividades lúdicas, um Museu de História Natural e um teleférico que o liga à Freguesia do Monte.

Ao longo do jardim, as plantas encontram-se identificadas com o nome científico, nome comum, família e local de origem e dispostas em várias coleções principais, das quais se destacam: as espécies endémicas da Madeira, o arboreto, as plantas suculentas, os jardins coreografados e a topiária, as plantas agroindustriais, as plantas aromáticas e medicinais, as palmeiras e cicadáceas e as áreas ajardinadas.
O desejo e necessidade de um Jardim Botânico já provinha de séculos anteriores, contudo tornou-se uma realidade apenas na década de 60 do século XX, nesta antiga propriedade da família Reid’s.
