“Festivities and Pilgrimages of Madeira” Until November 24th Itinerant Exhibition of the Ethnographic Museum of Madeira (MEM) In all the parishes religious or pilgrimage festivals are celebrated, consecrated to god, to the Holy Spirit, to Our Lady and to the Saints, represented by a relic or by an image. Normally these festivals take place on weekends and originate in a legend, or were introduced by the first settlers, for they brought with them their saints of devotion, making them holy protectors of a certain locality.

Promovido pela Direção Regional da Cultura (DRC), esta iniciativa cultural consiste num ciclo de concertos realizados em espaços litúrgicos de referência, como a Sé Catedral, a Igreja do Colégio e a Igreja de São Pedro, com recitais protagonizados por mestres organeiros de renome nacional e internacional. O festival pretende dar a conhecer e consolidar os trabalhos desenvolvidos pela dita entidade no que respeita à recuperação de um património cultural quase desconhecido, bem como potenciar e promover a oferta cultural organística madeirense.

The International Festival of Electronic Music and digital Arts MADEIRADIG, which this year bets on a new format, from 29 November to 8 December, between Calheta and Ponta do Sol, sees its network of partnerships extending to the Asian continent, more specifically To the Faculty of Creative Industries of the University of Saint Joseph, Macau, with the aim of providing exchanges between creators of both geographic spaces. At the same time in the region, it reinforces relations with the Regional Directorate of Culture of the RAM, through, which will host part of the festival activities in 2019. The festival again includes in its programming names of local artists from the area of experimentation. Daniel Bolba and Carlos Sena Caires, who are accompanied by Diogo Carriço and Gerald Estadieu, respectively. Also Portuguese are the names of the first confirmations for the stage of the MUDAS-Museum of Contemporary Art of Madeira: guitarist Manuel Mota, bassist Margarida Garcia and photographer and director Rui Pinheiro are three new confirmations. Organized by the Madeira Cultural Bureau (DRC), this festival aims to publicise and consolidate one of its recent projects concerning the restoration of an almost unknown part of cultural heritage as well as to enrich and promote the decentralisation of the organrelated culture on display in Madeira with a series of concerts taking place in several worship temples within the municipality of Funchal, such as the Cathedral, the Colégio Church and the Church of São Pedro (Saint Peter). Curral das Freiras ("Valley of the Nuns") is a civil parish in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos in the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira. It is situated in the mountainous interior of the island. Being one of the more distant locations from the municipal seat of Câmara de Lobos, it is geographically isolated from other communities by the cliffs and peaks surrounding its central valley. A tunnel southwards in the direction of Funchal now offers safe access to the valley. Most of the buildings in the parish overlook the main valley, with the steep hillsides encircling the parish used for the cultivation of cherries and grapes used in the production of Madeira wine.

Madeira Pride is a nonprofit event that takes place in the city of Funchal for the third year. Starting with the goal of claiming human rights and and promoting the celebration of difference and diversity, it has become an important milestone for the LGBTI community, and is increasingly a landmark event at the cultural level. This year, the event takes place on October 18th and 19th, with an initiative of debate and reflection scheduled for October 18th, and the already customary LGBTI + Pride march of Madeira and Arraial Pride on October 19th, Saturday. The Stars Route

Created in 2010, “The Stars Route” is identified as one of the most important high-quality gastronomic festivals that take place in Portugal, involving, since that date, more than half a hundred national and foreign chefs awarded with the famous Michelin Guide stars. 1. Start with the fruit. Pour the apple juice into a saucepan and bring to a simmer. Add the butter, let it melt, then take off the heat and add the syrup and rum. Put the mixed fruit and cranberries into a large bowl, pour over the hot rum mix, then cover tightly with cling film and leave overnight. 2. The next day, heat oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 3. Grease and double-line a 20cm round, deep cake tin with non-stick baking parchment. Beat the butter and sugar together until creamy and pale, then gradually beat in the eggs until light and fluffy. If the mix starts to split or look lumpy, add 1 tbsp of the flour and keep beating. Sift in the flour, spices and 1/4 tsp salt, and fold in using a large spoon. Fold in the orange zest, nuts, soaked fruit and soaking liquid. 3. Spoon the batter into the tin, level the top, then make a slight dimple in the middle using the back of the spoon. Bake for 1 hr 30 mins, then reduce oven to 140C/120C fan/gas 1 and bake for a further 1 hr 45 mins or until it has risen, is a dark golden color and a skewer inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean. Put the tin on a cooling rack and leave until warm. 4. To feed the cake the first time, use a cocktail stick to poke all over the top of the warm cake. Stir together the rum and maple syrup, then slowly spoon over the cake. Cool completely, then remove the baking parchment, wrap loosely in clean baking parchment and store in an airtight tin. Feed the cake every week to 10 days until you decorate it. 5. Madeira Rum Cake Ingredients 225g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 225g light muscovado sugar 4 large eggs, beaten 225g plain flour 2 tsp ground mixed spice zest 1 small orange 85 pecans or walnuts, toasted, then roughly chopped For the fruit 150ml cloudy apple juice 50g unsalted butter 2 tbsp maple syrup 5 tbsp dark rum 800g mixed dried fruit (the kind that includes mixed peel) 175g dried cranberries 2 tbsp dark rum 1 tbsp maple syrup

225g manteiga sem sal, amolecida, mais extra para untar a forma 225g de açúcar mascavado 4 ovos grandes, batidos 225g de farinha de trigo 2 colher de chá de especiarias misturadas 1 laranja pequena (sumo e raspas) 250g de nozes pecans ou nozes comuns, torradas e picadas grosseiramente

Frutas embebidas em calda 150ml de sumo de maçã (com polpa) 50g de manteiga sem sal 2 colheres de sopa de xarope de ácer (ou mel de cana da Madeira) 5 colheres de sopa de rum escuro 800g de mistura de frutas secas (o tipo que inclui casca mista) 175g de arandos vermelhos (frescos ou secos) Calda 2 colheres de sopa de rum escuro 1 colher de chá xarope de ácer (ou mel de cana da Madeira)

Preparação: 1. Comece com a fruta. Deite o sumo de maçã numa panela e deixe ferver. Adicione a manteiga, deixe derreter, em seguida, tirar do calor e adicione o xarope (ou mel de cana) e rum. Coloque a mistura de frutos secos e os arandos numa tigela grande, despeje sobre esta a mistura de rum quente, e em seguida, cubra firmemente com película aderente e deixe repousar a noite. 2. No dia seguinte, aqueça o forno a 160C/140C. Unte com margarina uma forma de bolo redonda alta de 20cm, forre com papel manteiga o fundo e o lado da forma, e unte o papel com margarina, polvilhando com um pouco de farinha. Bata a manteiga e o açúcar juntos até ficarem cremosos e claros, em seguida, adicionar um ovo de cada vez, batendo bem até que a mistura fique leve e fofa. Peneirar a farinha, especiarias e 1/4 colher de chá de sal, e misturar uma colher grande, tentando dobrar a massa. Juntar as raspas de laranja, nozes, e as frutas embebidas em calda. 3. Deitar a massa na forma, nivelar o topo, em seguida fazer uma ligeira covinha no meio usando a parte de trás da colher. Leve ao forno por 1 hr 30 mins, em seguida, reduzir o forno para 140C/120C e assar por mais 1 hr 45 minutos ou até que tenha aumentado. O bolo deverá ter uma cor dourada escura; inserir um palito de madeira (ou vara de coktail de madeira) no meio do bolo, deve sair limpo. Coloque a lata sobre uma grelha de metal, e deixe arrefecer. 4. Para embeber o bolo da primeira vez com a calda, use uma vara do cocktail para picar toda sobre a parte superior do bolo morno. Misture o rum e xarope de ácer (ou mel de cana), em seguida, deitar lentamente com uma colher sobre o bolo. Deixe que esfrie completamente, a seguir remova papel manteiga, enrole frouxamente numa folha de papel manteiga novo e armazene-o numa lata hermética. Embeber o bolo a cada uma semana a 10 dias, até que seja para cobrir e decorar para servir. 5. Para cobrir e decorar o seu bolo, na hora de servir, usar fondant simples branco ou creme de manteiga aromatizado com baunilha, e decorar com alguns arandos e nozes picadas; ao servir acompanhar com natas batidas sem açúcar.

Water is also an important decorative feature in the form of lakes and waterfalls, with miniature islands and ornamental bridges. Next to the lakes containing Koi fish, two bamboo ornaments in the shape of pipes are to be seen. When these become filled with water and it is discharged into the lake, the resulting noise, apart from frightening away the birds, represents the passing of time. From Asia we can find a species of cycad, Cyca revolute and in both the oriental gardens we come across various tree ferns, whose lush green vegetation contrasts with the red and black of the bridges and railings. There are also flowering plants such as the camellia, a shrub with evergreen leaves, highly valued for the number of attractive flowers that bloom, above all, in the winter and spring.

Jardins Orientais Durante uma viagem à China, José Berardo ficou maravilhado com a história, cultura e modo de vida, especialmente, pela influência dos Portugueses no Oriente durante 200 anos. Os dois jardins orientais são uma tentativa de recriar essa cultura, ligada ao Budismo, com o seu respeito pela Natureza e os seus elementos simbólicos bastante demarcados. À entrada do Jardim Oriental, nas áreas a Norte, há dois cães de Fó, em mármore, animais míticos do Oriente geralmente encontrados nas entradas dos templos, actuando como guardiães. Nas suas bocas entreabertas encontra-se uma bola móvel que, de acordo com a crença chinesa, dá boa sorte àqueles que lhe derem uma volta completa. A decoração tem por base o estilo oriental e por isso, podem ver-se vários pagodes, que originalmente tinham por finalidade alojar relíquias ou marcar locais sagrados. Para além destes, o visitante pode também observar esculturas Budistas, tais

como, um dragão em mármore rodeado por crianças representando a fertilidade, bancos de pedra com decorações orientais e várias lanternas também em pedra. Importa ainda referir uma componente fulcral neste tipo de jardins, a água, que abunda nas lagoas e cascatas, com ilhas e pontes ornamentais. Ao lado das lagoas dos peixes Koi, encontram-se dois ornamentos em bambu em forma de cachimbo. Quando estes ficam cheios de água e a descarregam para a lagoa, o ruído que daí resulta, para além de afugentar os pássaros, sugere a passagem tempo. Proveniente da Ásia encontra-se uma espécie de cica, a Cyca revoluta, e em ambos os jardins orientais vêem-se vários fetos arbóreos, cuja vegetação verde luxuriosa contrasta com o vermelho e preto das pontes e varões. Existem ainda plantas como a camélia, Camellia japonica, de folhagem permanente, muito apreciadas pelo número de flores que produz, sobretudo, no Inverno e na Primavera.

During a trip to China and Japan José Berardo became enchanted by their history, culture and way of life and by the influence of the Portuguese on the Orient over 200 years. As such, the two oriental gardens are an attempt to recreate that culture, linked to Buddhism, with its respect for Nature and its highly symbolic elements. At the entrance to the Oriental garden in the Northern area, there are two marble Fo dogs, mythical animals from the Orient usually found at the entrance to temples, acting as guards. There is a moveable ball in their halfopen mouths which, according to the Chinese belief, brings good luck to those who give it one complete turn. The decoration is based on the oriental style, and thus various pagodas may be found, originally intended to house relics or to mark a holy places. The Legend of

Machim & Ana D´Arfet

– Uma história de amor intemporal

Machim and his friends thought up a plan to rescue the bride before the wedding and take her by boat to France, that at the time was fighting against the English in the Hundred Years War. The date of the escape was agreed with the young woman to be the eve of the wedding day. As they fled away from the English coast, the lovers were surprised by a storm that caused them to lose the aspired course. Suffering setbacks due to the storm, and not having an experienced pilot on board with them who would put them back on course, they drifted for days until they saw in the distance a "big green spot". They were in front of the island which would later be denominated Madeira Island. Despite the fear of the unknown, desperation led them to approach and because the lady was ill from spending so much time at sea, they disembarked on the inlet that today is the Machico bay. Their anxiety to step ashore was so great, that they left without taking appropriate action as to anchoring the boat. After exploring that part of the island and having satiated their thirst, they realized that a new storm was approaching. They sought refuge among the roots of a large tree that stood there, for the diameter of the trunk circumference was such that its base had a cavity that could shelter many people without any lack of space. When the storm calmed they noticed that the sea had taken away the boat. The tormented lady, whose health was already debilitated, would die a few days later.

LEGEND Machim raised an enormous wooden cross next to the grave of his beloved, which was near the large tree where they had found shelter. Machim was affected by a very big melancholy and in less than a week he joined his beloved in death. It is said that the remaining members of the expedition that stayed there, tried to survive and engraved on the cross a brief story of the two beloved. Some died while others resisted until a boat of Moors passed there and rescued them and took them to North Africa, to be sold as slaves. One of these would have been rescued by one of the payments for the release of captives that Christians did with African traders. So it was this way that someone survived and told the saga of Machim, and rumours of said discovery reached the Portuguese. The legend also tells that us when the Portuguese discoverers came a few years later, they were able to discover the wooden cross and the inscription. They built the first chapel of the island in the tree cavity, thus giving the name of Machico in honour of that inscription.

Segundo a lenda, entre o final do século XIV e o início do século XV existia em Inglaterra um jovem chamado Roberto Machim, cavaleiro lendário da corte do rei Eduardo III de Inglaterra. Estava apaixonado de uma dama inglesa, Ana de Arfert (ou Ana de Harfert), que correspondia ao seu amor mas, por vontade dos seus familiares, deveria casar com um nobre.

Machim e os seus amigos engendraram um plano para resgatar a noiva antes do casamento e levá-la de barco para França que, na altura, se encontrava em guerra contra os ingleses na Guerra dos Cem Anos. A data da fuga foi acordada com a jovem para as vésperas do dia do casamento. Ao fugir para longe da costa inglesa, os amantes foram surpreendidos por uma tempestade que os fez perder o rumo ambicionado. Sofrendo contrariedades devido à tempestade, e não tendo a bordo um piloto experiente que os voltasse a colocar no rumo certo, o casal apaixonado andou à deriva durante dias até que viram ao longe uma "grande mancha verde". Estavam em frente à ilha que, mais tarde, se denominaria ilha da Madeira.

Apesar do medo perante o desconhecido, o desespero levou-os a acercaremse e, uma vez que a dama se encontrava doente por passar tanto tempo no mar, desembarcaram na enseada que hoje é a baía de Machico. A sua ansiedade por pisar terra firme era tanta que desembarcaram sem tomarem as devidas providências quanto à ancoragem do barco. Depois de explorarem aquele pedaço da ilha e de terem saciado a sua sede, aperceberam-se que nova tempestade se aproximava. Procuraram refúgio por entre as raízes de uma frondosa árvore que lá se encontrava, pois o diâmetro da circunferência do tronco desta era tal, que na sua base havia uma cavidade que conseguia agasalhar muitas pessoas. Quando a tempestade acalmou, repararam que o mar revolto tinha-lhes levado o barco. A dama atormentada, cujo estado de saúde estava já debilitado, viria a falecer passados poucos dias. Machim ergueu uma enorme cruz em madeira na sepultura da sua amada, junto da frondosa árvore onde haviam encontrado abrigo. Machim foi afetado por uma enorme melancolia e, em menos de uma semana, juntou-se à sua amada na morte. Diz-se que os restantes membros da expedição que por lá ficaram, tentaram sobreviver e gravaram na cruz a breve história dos dois amados. Alguns morreram, enquanto outros resistiram até à passagem de um barco de mouros que os resgatou e os levou para o Norte de África, para serem vendidos como escravos. Um destes teria sido resgatado pelo pagamento de libertação de cativos que, normalmente, os cristãos realizavam junto dos negociantes africanos. E foi este sobrevivente que contou a saga de Machim aos portugueses. A lenda conta ainda que os descobridores portugueses, quando aí chegaram alguns anos depois, conseguiram descobrir a cruz de madeira e a inscrição. Edificaram então a primeira capela da ilha na cavidade da árvore, atribuindo o nome de Machico à localidade em honra dessa inscrição.

A ‘Lenda de Machim’ é a peça de teatro original que o Teatro Bolo do Caco apresentou no dia 07 de junho de 2019, às 16h30, no palco do Mercado Quinhentista de Machico. Este trabalho “procura resumir toda a história de Roberto Machim e Ana d'Arfet, numa farsa rocambolesca e divertida que não deixa dúvida alguma acerca da lenda”. O Teatro Bolo do Caco tem vindo a participar no Mercado Quinhentista de Machico desde 2015, com a vertente de circo de rua: saltimbancos e andarilhos malabaristas; além do teatro de rua, apresenta os Contadores de Estórias, em que atores de trajes e trejeitos picarescos vão pelas ruas contando contos e estórias tradicionais da nossa terra, em peças de 10/15 minutos.

caminhadas  How to get there from Funchal 1 - Take the Freeway (VR1) towards Ribeira Brava; 2 - At Ribeira Brava, follow the Via Expresso (VE3) towards Ponta do Sol and Calheta; 3 - Once you arrive in the village of Prazeres, follow the 2nd exit towards Caminho Lombo da Rocha; 4 - Follow that road until the end where you’ll see Jardim Atlântico Hotel; 5 - The route is located on the left.

 Points of Interest - PR 19 is a royal road that was once widely used by the locals to travel from the coast up to the mountains for various commercial purposes. The people of Paul do Mar used this route as a means of getting to the top of the cliff in order to farm and sell their fish. - The starting point of this walk is located at the hotel Jardim Atlântico, where you may also do the famous “pés descalços” or barefoot walking experience. Just before you descend Paul do Mar you’ll pass the Lombo da Rocha viewpoint, which is where you should make your first stop. From here you can look out onto to the vast Atlantic Ocean and admire the picturesque fishing villages of Paul do Mar and Jardim do Mar. - On this walk you’ll see waterfalls, cliffs and the geological beauty which define this island. - Once you arrive at Paul do Mar you’ll easily see the influence of the fishing industry on this village.

 Safety recomendations - Due to the erosive nature of the coastline, appropriate footwear and walking-poles are recommended; - If you are scared of heights please be aware that this route is rather exposed and may not be the most suitable walk for you.

Como chegar do Funchal: 1 - Apanhe a auto-estrada (VR1) em direção à Ribeira Brava; 2 - Na Ribeira Brava, siga pela via expresso (VE3) em direcção à Ponta do Sol e Calheta; 3 - Uma vez que chegue à Vila dos Prazeres (Calheta), siga pela 2ª saída em direção ao caminho Lombo da Rocha; 4 - Siga essa estrada até o final, onde verá o Jardim Atlântico Hotel; 5 - A rota está localizada à esquerda.

Pontos de interesse: - PR 19 é uma estrada real que já foi amplamente utilizada pelos moradores para viajar da costa até as montanhas para vários fins comerciais. O povo de Paul do Mar usou esta rota como um meio de chegar ao topo do penhasco, a fim de cultivar e vender os seus peixes. - O ponto de partida deste passeio está localizado no Hotel Jardim Atlântico, onde também pode fazer o famoso "pés descalços" ou a experiência de andar descalço.

O festival internacional de música electrónica e artes digitais MADEIRADIG, que este ano aposta num novo formato a decorrer de 29 de Novembro a 8 de Dezembro entre a Calheta e a Ponta do Sol, vê a sua rede de parcerias alargar ao continente Asiático, mais especificamente à Faculdade de Indústrias Criativas da Universidade de Saint Joseph, Macau, com o objectivo de proporcionar o intercâmbio entre criadores de ambos os espaços geográficos. Ao mesmo tempo na Região, reforça relações com a Direcção Regional de Cultura da RAM, através do, que acolherá parte das actividades do festival em 2019.

lso Portuguese are the names of the first confirmations for the stage of the MudasMuseum of Contemporary Art of Madeira: guitarist Manuel Mota, bassist Margarida Garcia and photographer and director Rui Pinheiro are three of the confirmations for the edition of this Year of MadeiraDig, International Festival of Electronic Music and digital arts, which in this 16th edition appears extended in time, with activities from November 29th to December 8th, divided between Calheta and Ponta do Sol.

anuel Mota vai orientar um workshop sobre técnicas de improvisação, dedicado a instrumentistas e vocalistas, autodidactas ou com formação, e também para académicos com ou sem experiência nesta área. A formação decorre no Centro Cultural John Dos Passos, na Ponta do Sol, nos dias 2 e 3 de Dezembro entre as 15 horas e as 18 horas. Entre outras coisas, vai abordar o silêncio e a escuta, o instrumento na vertente mais tradicional e da experimentação.

s Jardins do Ilhéu de Câmara de Lobos estão situados no cimo dum rochedo sobranceiro ao mar, vulgarmente conhecido como Ilhéu, no centro da cidade de Câmara de Lobos. Biografia A denominação de Ilhéu dada ao rochedo sobranceiro ao mar, deriva, segundo alguns autores, do facto de, primitivamente, estar isolado relativamente à terra e totalmente rodeado pelo oceano. Posteriormente, em consequência do deslizamento de terrenos provenientes da encosta da ilha, ter-se-ia então estabelecido a ligação hoje existente, afirmou o Prof. José Hermano Saraiva, numa conferência que fez, por ocasião da I Semana da Pedra realizada em Câmara de Lobos entre 10 e 19 de Outubro de 1997.

O Ilhéu de Câmara de Lobos, em tempos, constituía o núcleo de maior densidade populacional da Madeira, albergando o Bairro de Pescadores, desta vila piscatória. O bairro sofreu obras de requalificação, apresentando-se hoje como um local de agradável visita e com uma linda vista sobre o Cabo Girão e o centro da cidade.

Subsequently, as a consequence of the landslides from the slope of the island, the existing link was to be established today, said Prof. José Hermano Saraiva, at a conference he made on the occasion of the first stone week held in Câmara de Lobos, between 10th and 19th October of 1997. The "Ilhéu" of Câmara de Lobos, once constituted the nucleus of the largest population density of Madeira, housing the fisherman's quarter, this fishing village. The neighborhood has undergone refurbish works, presenting itself today as a place of pleasant visit and with a beautiful view over the Cape Girão and the city center.

Bottlenose Dolphins are the most common members of the family Delphinidae, the family of oceanic dolphin. These dolphins are marine mammals that live in tropical and temperate oceans around the world. This includes the waters off the UK and Ireland, where you can spot them swimming and playing in bays and river estuaries. Due to its unique location in the midocean, the island of Madeira is blessed with a very special event: the presence of visiting whales and dolphins, which has only recently been recognized as another asset to this beautiful holiday destination. Bottlenose dolphins are the most common species and can be seen in the waters near Madeira the whole year. The other species you might see (depending on the season) include: Common Dolphin, Striped Dolphin, Pantropical Dolphin, Atlantic Spotted Dolphin, Rough-toothed Dolphin, and and Risso’s Dolphin.

Description These beautiful creatures have a short thick beak, as their name suggests, and a curved mouth, giving the appearance that they are always smiling. They weigh an average of 300 kg (660 pounds). It can reach a length of just over 4 metres (13 feet). Its color is usually dark gray on the back and lighter gray on the flanks. Older dolphins sometimes have a few spots. Although they live underwater, the bottlenose dolphin must come up to the surface to breath air. It breathes through what”s called a “blowhole”, a hole at the top of its head. These clever creatures can open this hole when inhaling and exhaling out of the water, and close it when below the ocean surface. They can hold their breath underwater for around seven minutes.

Food Being carnivores, these finned creatures eat mostly fish, but will also eat crustaceans such as shrimp and squid.

Skills Bottlenose dolphins are super swimmers, gliding through the water using their curved dorsal fin on their back, a powerful tail and pointed flippers.

They can reach speeds over 30km an hour and dive as deep as 250m below the surface. These skillful creatures are awesome acrobats, too, and can be seen flipping (or “breaching”) out of the water. In fact, they can launch themselves up to 6 meters (20 feet) out of the water before crashing back down with a splash. They can use tools such as “sponging” (using marine sponges to forage for food sources they normally could not access) and transmit cultural knowledge from generation to generation.

Intelligence Bottlenose dolphins are considerably intelligent and have driven interaction with humans. Bottlenose dolphins gained popularity from aquarium shows and television programs such as Flipper. Bottlenose dolphins have the third largest encephalization levels of any mammal on Earth (humans have the largest), sharing close ratios with those of humans and other great apes, which more than likely contributes to their high intelligence and emotional intelligence.

Devido à sua localização única no meio do oceano, a Ilha da Madeira é abençoada com um evento muito especial: a presença de baleias e golfinhos visitantes, que só recentemente foi reconhecido como um outro trunfo para este belo destino de férias. Os Golfinhos-Roazes são a espécie mais comum e podem ser vistos nas águas próximas da Madeira durante todo o ano. As outras espécies que pode ver (dependendo da época) incluem: Golfinho comum, Golfinho listrado, Golfinho pantropical, Golfinho manchado do Atlântico, Golfinho de dentes ásperos e Golfinho de Risso.

Curiosidades No mar o golfinho-roaz está sujeito a ameaças, nomeadamente a captura direta, acidental na atividade pesqueira, alteração de habitat e poluição. Na Madeira existem casos pontuais de interação com a pesca, mortalidade direta e stress causado pela atividade das embarcações marítimo turísticas. O estatuto de conservação do golfinho-roaz de acordo com a IUCN é classificado a nível global como “informação insuficiente” e a nível da Madeira classificado como “pouco preocupante”. A nível regional esta é uma espécie que está protegida pelo abrigo do Decreto Legislativo Regional Nº 6/86/M e a nível internacional pelo abrigo da Diretiva Habitat – Proteção rigorosa da espécie e habitat. O golfinho-roaz é uma espécie frequentemente observada em interação com embarcações, sendo uma das espécies de cetáceos mais avistadas pelas embarcações marítimo-turísticas que se dedicam à observação de cetáceos no mar da Madeira.

Interaction Bottlenose dolphins are social creatures that travel in groups, called “pods”, of around 10-15. In these groups they play and hunt together, as well as cooperate to raise young dolphin calves and help each other.

Communication Bottlenose dolphins are kings of communication. They send each other messages in different ways – they squeak and whistle and also use body language, leaping out of the water, snapping their jaws and even butting heads. These magnificent mammals also produce high-pitched clicks to help them navigate and find food – a process called “echolocation”. When the clicking sounds hit an object in the water – such as a rock or fish – they bounce back to the dolphin as echoes. From this, the super swimmers can work out the location, size and shape of the object.

Longevity Bottlenose dolphins can live for more than 40 years. Females typically live 5–10 years longer than males, with some females exceeding 60 years. This extreme age is rare and less than 2% of all Bottlenose dolphins will live longer than 60 years. Nellie, the longest-lived Atlantic bottlenose dolphin in human care, died at age 61 on April 30, 2014. Nellie was born on Feb, 27, 1953 at Marineland.

Reproduction After about 12 months of gestation, only one calf was born weighing approximately 10 kg and measuring between 0.8 meters and 1.2 meters.

However, these values vary, there are breeding records of a 4-year-old female dolphin. The mating season takes place between April and October. The females of this species achieve sexual maturation between 5 to 10 years and males between 8 A14 years. The mating is born only one calf, after a period of gestation lasting about 1 year.

Predators Some large shark species, such as the tiger shark, the dusky shark, the great white shark and the bull shark, prey on the bottlenose dolphin, especially calves.However, the biggest predators that have posed the greatest threat to these incredible creatures are humans. Millions of dolphins have either drowned in fishing nets or have been slaughtered for the meat market. Tuna fishing crews and Japanese hunts have been the most responsible for the largest number of killings and deaths.

FLORA

Protea is both the botanical name and the English common name of a genus of South African flowering plants, sometimes also called Sugarbushes. In local tradition, the Protea flower represents change and hope. The Genus Protea was named in 1735 by Carl Linnaeus, after the Greek god Proteus, who could change his form at will, because they have such a wide variety of forms. The family Proteaceae to which proteas belong is an ancient one among angiosperms. Evidence from pollen fossils suggest Proteaceae ancestors grew in Gondwana, in the Upper Cretaceous, 75-80 million years ago. The Proteaceae are divided into two subfamilies: the Proteoideae, best represented in southern Africa, and the Grevilleoideae, concentrated in Australia and South America and the other smaller segments of Gondwana that are now part of eastern Asia. Africa shares only one genus with Madagascar, whereas South America and Australia share many common genera — this indicates they separated from Africa before they separated from each other.

Proteas are currently cultivated in over 20 countries. Cultivation is restricted to Mediterranean and subtropical climates such as that of Madeira Island. Some Protea flower species, like the King Protea flower, are self-pollinating flowers. Other Protea species, however, like the Protea Chordata, Protea decurrens and the Protea scabra are selfincompatible and thus rely on cross-pollination for successive seed set. The main vectors responsible for the transfer of pollen in Protea cultivation are birds, insects and wind. There are some Protea species which exhibit both self-pollination as well as cross-pollination as a method of reproduction. Cross-pollination is however preferred as a method of reproduction because it provides genetic diversity in the population. When cultivating Proteas, breeders use hand pollination as a controlled method to transfer pollen from one flower to another.

The following steps are used by breeders to perform hand pollination: Cover the inflorescence, which contain only closed flowers, with a plastic bag; Once the first few flowers have opened, the majority has to be cut back to 10-20 flowers around the receptacle After three days the pollen may be applied using a tooth pick. The flower should then again be covered with a plastic bag and marked with a tag containing information regarding the seed, the parent as well as the date of pollination. This step should be repeated until all the flowers are opened and pollinated. The seed head should be harvested at nine to twelve months and dried at temperatures more or less at 40 °C to remove the seeds from the receptacle The seeds can be germinated in autumn using hot water The seeds should then be placed in a sterilized potting medium for germination.

s Próteas são um género botânico que pertence à família das proteaceae, que é composta por mais de 1500 espécies. São plantas arbustivas lenhosas com um forte potencial ornamental e muito valorizadas pelas flores de uma grande beleza e longevidade. São originárias da África do Sul, da Nova Zelândia e Austrália. Foram batizadas pelo botânico Carl Linnaeus, que assim as denominou por se parecerem com o Deus Grego Proteu, que conseguia transformar-se no que desejava quanto era exposto a muitas perguntas. Assim são as próteas, que nos deslumbram com uma grande variedade de formas e cores.

Como cuidar as próteas Localização: As próteas sobrevivem melhor em locais ensolarados, bastante arejados e com baixa humidade relativa (inferior a 50%). São muito exigentes em luz solar, quanto mais sol recebem mais florescem e crescem. Solo ideal: Apreciam um solos arenosos com boa drenagem, profundidade superior a 60 cm, pobres em nutrientes (principalmente baixo em fosfoforo) e com o pH ácido entre os 5,5 e os 6,5. Caso a terra apresente um pH acima de 6,5 adicione turfa ou sulfato de ferro à terra. Temperatura: Preferem locais onde as temperaturas variem ente os 7º e os 27º, contudo suportam temperaturas negativas até -3º, apreciam noites frias, dias quentes e uma boa circulação de ar. Como plantar Próteas: A plantação deverá ser delicada, de modo a não danificar as raízes que são muito sensíveis. Dão-se melhor no solo, porém também podem ser cultivada em vaso, que deverá

ter pelo menos 40 cm de altura e 30 cm diâmetro. Coloque argila expandida no fundo, de modo a favorecer a drenagem, as próteas não toleram o excesso de humidade, use um substrato leve e ácido e cubra com casca de pinheiro. Coloque o vaso num local arejado e ensolarado. Rega: No primeiro ano a rega da prótea deverá ser regular, evitando o encharcamento, depois do segundo ano a planta exige regas mais espaçadas. As próteas são sensíveis aos fungos, que podem danificar o sistema radicular e levar ao colapso da planta. Regue as próteas sempre pela manhã, tendo o cuidado de deixar secar a terra entre as regas. Fertilização das próteas: Têm raízes muito sensíveis, que podem facilmente ser queimadas pelos fosfatos. Utilize um adubo especifico para próteas (isento de fosforo) e apenas na fase de floração. Se utilizar outro tipo de adubo, certifique-se que ele não contém fosforo, as próteas são sensíveis a este mineral. Floração: Levam cerca de 3 anos a florirem. As flores apresentam uma grande longevidade que pode ir além das duas semanas depois do corte e depois de secas conseguem manter as cores vivas por alguns anos. Poda da prótea: Nos primeiros anos de vida realize uma poda de formação, corte os ramos acima da 3ª folha, com o cuidado de verificar se a gema axilar está em boas condições, pois é a partir dai que se vão originar as novos ramos e hastes florais. Ao longo do ciclo de vida da prótea vá realizando uma poda de limpeza, que consiste na eliminação de ramos doentes, secos, enfraquecidos e permitir um melhor arejamento da planta. Depois da floração elimine a haste floral.

Ilhotas pancreáticas (ou Ilhas de Langerhans) são um grupo especial de células do pâncreas que produzem insulina e glucagon, substâncias que agem como importantes reguladores do metabolismo de açúcar... Nomeadas em homenagem a Paul Langerhans, o cientista alemão que as descobriu em 1869, essas células se dispõem em aglomerados (clusters) no pâncreas. Elas fazem e segregam hormonas que ajudam o corpo a processar os alimentos.

Paul Langerhans was born in Berlin on July 25, 1847, the son of a physician. He later entered the renowned Graues Kloster in the same city. Due to his outstanding performance he was exempted from the final oral examinations. He began his medical studies at the University of Jena and completed them in Berlin. In February 1869, he presented a thesis entitled “Contributions to the microscopic anatomy of the pancreas”, in which he refers to islands of clear cells throughout the gland, staining differently than the surrounding tissue. He noticed that these areas were more richly innervated, but he could not suggest a function, except for the incorrect hypothesis that they might be lymph nodes. One year before, still as an undergraduate, he analysed epidermal skin cells as part of an open competition organized by Berlin University. The branched skin cells resembling neuron, described in his paper entitled “On the nerves of the human skin”, remained an enigma for over a century before their immunological function and significance were recognized. After graduation, he accompanied the geographer Richard Kiepert to Syria, Palestine and western Jordan, but returned to Europe at the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War and later served in an ambulance unit in France. In 1871, Rudolf Virchow arranged a position for him as prosector in pathological anatomy at the University of Freiburg, and within two years he became a full professor. It was there in 1874 that he contracted tuberculosis, very likely because of his work in the dissecting room. In search of a cure, he travelled to Naples, Palermo, the island of Capri, and underwent treatments at Davos and Silvaplana in Switzerland, but all in vain: he was forced to apply for release from his university duties.

In October 1875 he embarked for Funchal, on the island of Madeira, where he made a partial recovery and launched himself into a new career with undiminished energy. He began studying marine worms, making regular trips down to the harbor to pick over the fishermen’s’ nets. His publications describing and classifying marine invertebrates deserve to rank as his third contribution to science. In 1887, he gave a lecture on these topics to the Royal Academy in Berlin. He practiced as a physician in Funchal, treating mostly fellow tuberculosis-suffers, and published scientific papers about the condition in Virchow’s archive. He also wrote a handbook for travelers to the island, and pursued studies in meteorology. In 1885, he married Margarethe Ebart, the widow of one of his patients. They travelled to Berlin for the wedding, and he met his father, sisters and two brothers for the last time. The newly-weds rented Quinta Lambert, known as the most beautiful villa in Funchal and now the governor’s residence. In the words of his new bride “three indescribably happy years” followed. In autumn of 1887, progressive renal failure brought his medical activities to an end. He developed leg oedema, crippling headaches and transient memory loss. Sometimes he stopped in the middle of a sentence and was unable to continue. He died of uraemia on July 20, 1888, five days before his 41st birthday. He is buried in the British cemetery on Madeira, a place he had chosen, describing it as a “true graveyard, isolated and quiet, a good place to rest”.

Biografia Paul Langerhans foi um dos grandes médicos e investigadores do século XIX que, por infortúnio de uma tuberculose pulmonar, veio para a Madeira em 1874 em busca de mais alguns anos de vida, de um clima mais ameno ou mesmo da cura.

------------------------------Nasceu em Berlim, a 25 de julho de 1847, sendo filho de um médico. Mais tarde, entrou no renomado Graues Kloster na mesma cidade. Devido ao seu excelente desempenho, foi dispensado dos exames orais finais. Iniciou os seus estudos médicos na Universidade de Jena, tendo depois concluído os mesmos em Berlim.

Em Outubro de 1875 embarcou para o Funchal.

Na “Ilha do exílio”, como gostava de chamar à Madeira, dedicou-se à recolha e sistematização de diversas espécies zoológicas que enviou para o seu país e publicou um “Manual sobre a Madeira”, com referências aos costumes, aspetos turísticos e condições sanitárias da Ilha, com o objetivo de informar os seus conterrâneos.

Langerhans distinguiu-se pela descoberta de duas formações de células do organismo humano – as ilhotas no pâncreas e as células dentríticas na epiderme. Até à sua morte, em 20 de Julho de 1888 na Quinta Vigia, desenvolveu intensa atividade clínica assistencial até ao limite das suas forças. Foi sepultado no cemitério Inglês do Funchal e hoje ainda é possível ler no seu túmulo o epitáfio escolhido e traduzido por si, um excerto da Odisseia: “E também já não desejava continuar a viver, nem olhar a luz do sol a brilhar”. Com a tradução deste livro, projecto concretizado como estímulo à realização do Congresso Nacional de Endocrinologia em 2015 no Funchal, pretendeu-se dar a conhecer aos profissionais de saúde o Homem, o Cidadão, o Médico e o Investigador que foi Paul Langerhans que, na sua trajectória do “ilhéu pancreático” à “Ilha da Madeira”, transpôs o tempo com as suas inúmeras publicações, ficando para sempre na História da Medicina. [prefácio da autoria de Silvestre Abreu, Diretor do Serviço de Endocrinologia do Hospital Central do Funchal, a quem se deveu o impulso para a tradução da obra e coordenação da edição]. Na sua opinião, o cientista “transpôs as fronteiras do tempo com as inúmeras publicações, ficando para sempre na História da Medicina”.

As “Ilhas de Paul Langerhans”, título da em Língua Portuguesa da obra de Björn M. Hausen, é uma biografia em fotos e documentos de um dos médicos e investigadores mais importantes do século XIX.

A proposta de candidatura do Porto Santo à reserva da Biosfera da UNESCO-organização das Nações Unidas para a educação, a ciência e a cultura, foi aprovada pelo Conselho Regional da madeira em 25 de julho. A reserva abrange um total de 27.310 hectares de área protegida. Com mais de 2.110 espécies, algumas exclusivas da ilha, ecossistemas, paisagens naturais e construídas, consideradas únicas, a aplicação cabe dentro das diretrizes do programa homem da UNESCO e da biosfera (MaB), para a qual Portugal tem sido associado desde 1981. Porto Santo's proposal for application to the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve - United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, was approved by the Regional Council of Madeira on 25 July. The reserve covers a total of 27,310 hectares of protected area. With over 2,110 species, some unique to the island, ecosystems, natural and built landscapes, considered unique, the application fits within the guidelines of the Unesco Man and the Biosphere (MaB) Program, for which Portugal has been associated with since 1981. According to the Regional Government of Madeira, the application is based “on the very peculiar characteristics of the island, possessing well-preserved ecosystems and holders of species of exceptional interest for nature conservation and biodiversity, being recognized for the diversity and beauty of the islands.”

Canyoning in Madeira is an exhilarating sport that takes place in a mountainous watercourse and to overcome the obstacles of nature you’ll have to swim, jump and do rappels in beautiful waterfalls. 2 - Levada Walks "Levada" is a Portuguese word that derives from "levar", which means “to carry” and is very loosely interpreted as "carriageway". A more correct translation would be mini-canal. The levadas were originally created in the 16th Century to take water from the rainy northern area of the island to the sun soaked south where crops such as sugar, bananas and grapes grow. The original settlers chipped away at the cliffs and tunnelled through solid rock to make channels and tunnels all with a very slight slope so that the water meandered down towards its destination.

Madeira was nominated, for the fifth consecutive time, for the World's Best Island Destination at the World Travel Awards. Being a remarkable fact, the Madeira Promotion Association has launched a new campaign to mark the moment, continuing the “emotions” concept by presenting a diverse set of experiences that visitors can experience at their destination. The visuals developed in the campaign include a banner and a video that present Madeira’s sea and nature, as well as some of the main experiences and sensations that the destination offers. The creative concept of the campaign presents a cinematic look, a nomination-like concept equalizing an “Oscars of Tourism” scenario. To this day, the “Levadeiro” remains one of the oldest jobs on the island. These men are in charge of opening and shutting the gates which control the flow of the levadas. In total there are 2500 kms of levadas on the island and many were created even before the first roads. Diving and snorkelling in Madeira is to discover a special underwater world. The Atlantic’s marine life, the dive sites at different depths and their excellent visibility, make this an irresistible activity. With the sea temperature between 18 ° and 24 °C you’ll be able to dive or snorkel all year round and will not want to stop exploring the sea. In Madeira there are places where you can dive directly from the beach, such as “Galo”, “Reis Magos” or “Caniçal”. One of the most sought-after locations is Garajau nature reserve, which offers seven diving spots. Here you can see barracudas, morays, amberjacks, cutlassfish, mackerels, salemas, giant anemones and rays. Other features of this place include giant groupers that often come in close contact with the divers. In Porto Santo there’s good visibility up to 40 meters of depth! On the southwestern side, you'll find five spectacular breaks that love NE winds. Jardim do Mar is one them. It is probably the most famous spot in Madeira, but only intermediate and advanced surfers will tame it. A few kilometers north, there are three world-class waves: Ponta Pequena, Paul do Mar, and Fajã da Ovelha. When the N/NW/W ground swells arrive, there will be surf in the 6-to-15-foot range. Ponta do Pargo, though, can pump bigger waves, sometimes in the 50-foot mark. The northwestern side of Madeira offers two fabulous breaks on your way to the small town of Porto Moniz: Achadas da Cruz and Porta do Tristão. Both spots work well in low tide. If you're on the north side of the island, and if you're still catching your first waves, head to Fajã da Areia, a surf spot that is often delivering waves in the one-to-six-foot range. For point break enthusiasts, there's Ribeira da Janela, Contreiras, and Esquerda de S. Vicente. Madeira remains to be an uncrowded surf destination, but if you respect both the locals and Mother Nature, you'll surely enjoy the rides of a lifetime.

6 - Coasteering Situated in the eastern part of Madeira, Ponta de São Lourenço, a natural reserve since 1982, presents a unique landscape, very different from the rest of the island, consisting of stunning rock formation, several endemic plants and crystal clear seawater. It is no wonder then that this spot presents the ideal conditions for the practice of coasteering. Coasteering in Madeira consists of exploring the maritime coast through walking, swimming, climbing and jumping - with the appropriate equipment and supervision of expert guides. It is an activity for all ages seeing that there are programs that have been adapted to fit the profile of each participant.

Horseback riding has been gaining some popularity in Madeira over the past few years. It is undoubtedly an excellent way to experience some of the island’s least accessible trails. There are equestrian centers located in the outskirts of Funchal, especially in Jardim da Serra. By contacting or visiting the Madeira Tourist Board you will learn where and when you can begin your horseback riding experience. A novice or not, Madeira will definitely provide you with amazing trails and stunning viewpoints which will have you coming back for more.

7 - Mountain Biking Madeira is an island that has very few flat areas, which means that it can only be a paradise for riders interested in climbing as well as riding trails. There are many establishments that offer tours for different levels. Some might be more technical, others will have more uphill meters, but all of them share the same objective – exploring Madeira. To discover Madeira to the fullest by bike make sure you are prepared for some challenging climbs and a new definition of technical trails.

Madeira lives and breathes tourism, which represents roughly 20 percent of the island's gross domestic product (GDP). Surf tourism, however, is a relatively new chapter which has been recently added on. The best surf spots in Madeira are located in the western coast of the main island. The Madeira Surfing Association has released a pocket guide with the island's top 11 wave peaks.

Dolphin and whale watching excursions are extremely popular in Madeira and there are many companies offering such trips from Funchal. It would be unfair to ask which tour company would provide the best service seeing that all such firms communicate with each other and share information as soon as they spot cetaceans. Likewise, in terms of not disturbing sea life this strict rule applies to all tour companies, so there isn’t much difference either. It is worthy of note that luck also plays an important role when trying to spot marine wildlife. There are several types of whales that can be seen in Madeira throughout the year, so depending on the season there is always at least a couple of species around. Moreover, there are over twenty different kinds of dolphins that can be seen in Madeira, depending on the season, so there’s always a greater likelihood to spot dolphins over whales. According to local guides the best months to spot whales in Madeira are May and June and then September to November. As for dolphins they’ve confirmed that these aquatic mammals are always around. In a nutshell, the island of Madeira can make a dolphin and whale watcher’s dream come true.

10 - Kayaking & Stand Up Paddling

Organized by the Madeira Athletics Association (AARAM), the Ultra Madeira is a proof that seeks to be a more accessible alternative than the Madeira Island Ultra Trail, in a competition that runs from the 5th to the 6th of October. In its 3rd edition, the Ultra Madeira is a trail running event, which takes place entirely on the island of Madeira, with passages through the most emblematic points of the same, between the localities of Ponta do Pargo and Machico, on a route with about 83 km , integrating four (4) tests: The ULTRA MADEIRA (82.9 km 3600 D), the TRAIL 30K (29.3 km 1140D), the TRAIL 17K (16.9 km 120 D) and the Mini Trail (4 km 40D).

Kayaking and stand Up paddling in Madeira is a fun and original way to explore one of the world’s most beautiful coastlines and enjoy the tranquility of nature. There are experienced and knowledgeable guides who will lead the way to the marine nature reserve of Ponta de Sao Lourenco. The sea route often follows the coastline to reveal the dazzling landscapes such as enchanting bays and marine caves only accessible from the sea. The guides conduct the trip by pointing out interesting features of the landscape, flora and marine life as you pass.

Esta competição destina-se a atletas de elite, em representação das seleções nacionais dos países europeus e resto do mundo, totalizando 300 desportistas. Paralelamente, para além da Taça de Portugal, realiza-se a competição do âmbito regional. No dia seguinte, realiza-se a Taça do Mundo de Paratriatlo. O Triatlo, é um tipo de desporto que leva os atletas aos seus limites, em três diferentes modalidades: natação, ciclismo e corrida. Cada modalidade exige que o atleta esteja na sua melhor condição física. As distâncias no triatlo, consistem em 1500m de natação, 40km Ciclismo e 10 km de corrida e todas realizadas consecutivamente.

A AARAM - Associação de Atletismo da Região Autónoma da Madeira volta a acolher mais uma edição da Meia e Mini Maratona do Porto Santo. A Meia Maratona terá um percurso com 21.097,50 metros, com partida na Avenida Manuel Gregório Pestana Júnior (Estrada Marginal) no fim da passadeira de peões que fica alinhada com o Cais, e chegada no Cais. A Mini Maratona terá um percurso com 10 km de extensão. Esta competição está integrada no Campeonato Regional de Meia Maratona na distância de Meia e Mini Maratona.

VII Sandokan Enduro | 9 a 10 Novembro | Calheta Taking place in the municipality of Calheta the 7th edition of the test Sandokan-Enduro Madeira Island, a sport competition in the modality of MTB, dynamized by the company BIKULTURE. This competition has attracted Madeira a growing number of several internationally renowned athletes, namely, Joe Barnes, Matti Leikonen, Fabien Barel among others. Similar to previous editions, it will run in parallel to Sandokan Experience, an extra "no time" competition format. This type of competitions has been contributing decisively to the international projection of the potential of Madeira destination in the active tourism segment, and in particular to the practice of this sport modality. The Machico Museum Centre is a cultural institution created by the local Town Hall, after the restoration of Ribeirinho Manor-House, a building from the 18th century. In this museum you find stories and characters that made the Machico Town, along its 600 years of history. The Museum celebrates 12 years of existence this year, on November 15th.

THEMATIC NUCLEUS Its thematic nucleus include: 1. O Solar do Ribeirinho; 2. The Origins, The Settlement and the Local Life; 3. The Economic Course and; 4. The everyday life; 5 - Hall of temporary exhibitions. These nucleus allow to the visitor the discovery and attendance of several historical objects: - A "Machim's" cross, a painting from the first donee captain of Machico, Tristão Vaz Teixeira, a processional court from the 17th century with great artistic value, a very rare 16th century signet with a ivory handle and a plate seal (image 1), several ceramic, stone and metal archaeological objects, a inscription of a quatrain from the 17th century local poet Francisco Álvares de Nóbrega (Camões Pequeno), and several objects from the economic, social and cultural history of Machico, from the earliest time, in the 15th century, to the 20th century.

This museum has educational and didactic resources, based on information new technologies. The texts are in Portuguese and English languages.

CONTEXTUALIZAÇÃO HISTÓRICA O Solar do Ribeirinho, também conhecido por Solar de São Sebastião ou Solar do Rosário, é um edifício dos finais do século XVII, implantado na malha urbana histórica da Cidade de Machico. Até meados do século XX esteve na posse de particulares tendo sido posteriormente adquirido pela Câmara Municipal de Machico. Após 1974 foi ocupado por algumas famílias regressadas das ex-colónias portuguesas de África e mais tarde funcionou como armazém da edilidade.

CLASSIFICAÇÃO

Considerando o interesse histórico, arqueológico e arquitetónico do imóvel a Câmara Municipal de Machico, em parceria com a ARCHAIS – Associação de Arqueologia e Defesa do Património da Madeira solicitou ao Governo Regional da Madeira o início do processo de classificação. Em Dezembro de 1998 o Solar do Ribeirinho é classificado como Imóvel de Valor Local (atualmente Imóvel de Interesse Municipal).

COMO NASCEU O MUSEU?

4 Núcleo 1 – O Solar do Ribeirinho (Ribeirinho Manor-House) 1 - Vista da Sala 2 - Trabalhos arqueológicos no Solar, 1998, pela associação ARCHAIS 3 - Solar do Ribeirinho antes do restauro 4 - “Cabeça de Anjo Esculpida” (“Angel Head Sculpture”) | Séc. XIX (19th Century) – Achado arqueológico. Exposição permanente.

O Museu surgiu pela constatação da necessidade de criação em Machico de um pólo de perfil museológico, e teve por objetivo principal proporcionar ao público um circuito museológico, visitável, em pleno Centro Histórico da Cidade de Machico, integrando acervos representativos da memória histórica local. Tendo como instalações um espaço recuperado (entre 2004 e 2005), através do projeto de restauro do experimentado arquiteto Victor Mestre, manteve o mais possível a estrutura original do edifício e modificou o seu interior de forma a responder ás exigências do programa museológico a que a mansão se destina. Tratando-se de um local emblemático da história de Machico, este solar é detentor de uma grande memória e um dos primeiros locais onde se fez arqueologia na Madeira, sendo por essa razão uma referência da arqueologia pós-medieval madeirense. Num contexto regional de inexistência de estações arqueológicas visitáveis, o solar potencia o interesse científico e naturalmente o turístico. O Núcleo Museológico abriu as suas portas a 15 de Novembro de 2007. EXPOSIÇÃO PERMANENTE Neste museu é possível encontrar, de uma forma interativa, histórias e personagens que edificaram a atual cidade de Machico, ao longo de mais de 500 anos de história, distribuídas pelos 4 núcleos temáticos em exposição.

No percurso dos 4 núcleos temáticos - (1. O Solar do Ribeirinho; 2. As Origens, o Povoamento e a Vida Local; 3. Percurso Económico; 4º. O Quotidiano), o visitante pode descobrir diversos objetos históricos: - Uma cruz de Machim; uma pintura do 1.º Capitão Donatário de Machico (Tristão Vaz Teixeira); um passo processional do século XVII com elevado interesse artístico; um raríssimo sinete com punho em marfim e cunho em prata do século XVI; vários objetos arqueológicos de cerâmica, pedra e metal; uma inscrição gravada com uma quadra do poeta setecentista machiquense Francisco Álvares de Nóbrega (Camões Pequeno); e vários objetos que configuram a história económica, social e cultural de Machico, desde os primeiros tempos do povoamento, no século XV, até ao século XX.

O padrão armoriado contitui uma raridade no contexto azulejar regional. (DIR) Conjunto de Azulejos Policromos | Séc. XVII - Padrão de Pinhas ou Massarocas, particularidade de contorno a preto. Descoberto em 1984, enterrados na loja frontal direita, no rés-do-chão do Solar. Ambos fazem parte da exposição permanente.

O Serviço Educativo do Solar do Ribeirinho surgiu como uma forma de estabelecer a ponte entre o espaço museológico e os estabelecimentos de ensino e instituições públicas e privadas da Região Autónoma da Madeira. Tem por finalidade a criação de novas formas de relação evento/público, partindo de uma espaço privilegiado de forte interesse histórico, que encerra muitas memórias e que pretende atrair em especial a faixa de público escolar.

Depois de secos, estes pequenos “pães de açúcar” podem ser levados para casa pelas crianças.

A longa metragem "Cartas de Fora" aborda temáticas como a contrução das levadas, o vinho e a emigração, a que se junta a vida sofrida das bordadeiras da Ilha da Madeira. "Um sonho para além da vertigem do medo" é a frase síntese da essência do filme, explica o realizador. “O sonho dos rocheiros em emigrar sobrepõe-se ao medo imposto pelas escarpas onde, presos por cordas frágeis de sisal, derrubavam a rocha”, acrescenta.
