Description:

Bringing together students and the local community in a creative environment with a fresh perspective can fulfill the lack of arts education and enhance community involvement. In doing so students as well as members of the community can benefit themselves as well as those around them. This creative outlet will bring people together to create an empowered community while also offering classes for age ranges 13-18.

Solution:

Creating an environment that incorporates diversity, community and creativity.

Prospect and Refuge

Describing why certain environments feel secure and thereby meet basic human psychological needs.

Place Attachment

Specific areas that can create an emotional bond between the users and the space.

Community Involvement

Design features geared towards making the community feel involved.

Person Environment

Ways that focus on the interaction between characteristics of individuals and the environment.

Way Finding

Design accommodations to be able to increase steady flow through each space.

Student Engagement/Education

Design features to help enhance students’ creativity as well as engagement in the community.

As a part of community engagement and connecting the theory of prospect and refuge visitors will be able to take part in an interactive element surrounding the grand stairs. This element stretches from the first floor to the third. The organic elements take inspiration from the logo of the facility as well as my concept.

On the third-floor people have the option of taking different weighted rings to drop down these organic shapes. Each shape having a different weight will cause a different musical tune to play as they circle around to the first floor.

Educational Spaces

In this space you will find a pottery studio, sewing studio, 2D/3D studio a public work area and private work studios. These spaces are welcome to students for after school programs as well as to the mentors and teachers that work or volunteer in the building.

At the top of the feature, it reads “Drop a ring, make a noise, make an impact”. This will give the different user groups a sense of belonging in the space. Each ring is also inspired by different color theory.

Healthcare Design

Description:

Canyonville Wellness Center incorporates biophilia design as well as universal design to create a welcoming inviting space where anyone is welcome. Canyon Ville is a state-of-the art health center that evokes a sense of home.

Solution:

To create a new healthcare facility consisting of an Urgent Care, Emergency Department and Short-Term Rehabilitation located in Canyonville, Oregon.

Concept: The Proust Effect

The Proust Effect is the phenomenon of when you are given a different scent that it can cause a effect where you remember an old memory. Through this concept my interpretation was to create a space using different senses to evoke these memories and feeling of home as well as using movement, patterns, variety, and shape. Healthcare facilities are supposed to be a space where you focus on your health and using these methods can impact the well-being of others.

Role:

Schematic design, creative direction, modeling, programming, design development, graphic design

Software:

Short-Term Rehabilitation

Green to encourage a feeling of safety, harmony, stability, nature, and balance.

To help evoke a sense of home most of the rooms contain different photographs and artwork of different outdoor scenes. Having local artists show their work can help the patient have a sense of community in the space. The pictures also connect the patients to nature.

library in short-term rehab

Cellient is a woven textile that incorporates proprietary infrared fiber technology that promotes energy and causes less fatigue while sitting.

Senses used here are sight, smell, and touch. This is seen through the fireplaces, interesting textures and nature wall decals that also connect the user into nature and incorporate biophilia design.

second floor plan

short-term rehab room

A combination of cool and warm colors in each space evokes different feelings and stimulate different senses. Warm colors can be stimulating and make a space feel warmer, therefore, promoting my idea of the five senses and a sense of home. The cool colors seen in each space are to evoke calmness and be soothing.

Wayfinding is seen here on the flooring with the different colors. The green flooring in the acute care rooms acts as branding showing a mountain range that is also seen in the logo. The ceiling feature above the nursing station also provides wayfinding with smooth lines and organic forms connecting back to the concept. The numbers on the rooms help patients and staffs easily find the rooms as well.

acute care room

Warm colors used to evoke a feeling of home in acute care. This can keep people calm and comfortable and not overwhelmed.

Research shows that although users enjoy gardens in healthcare the city noise or high traffic can prevent the feeling of calmness desired. The solution was raising walls and incorporating greenery throughout.

Cool colors in the gym are to help reduce stress and create a calming environment.

OCEAN SONICS

Ocean Sonics is expanding their company to Boston, Massachusetts. They are in need of a design for a two-story office space.

Solution:

To solve this, I have created an open multi-use space for Ocean Sonics to grow. I have incorporated universal, sustainable, and generational design to allow a easily usable space for anyone to use.

Concept: Sei whale

This breed of whale represents emotion, inner truth, and creativity. Whales have rhythm and movement to them and are a simple creature with smooth lines and curves.

I decided to go with a spiral staircase to help convey the concept of a whale with smooth, curved lines. At the top of the staircase is a glass phone booth which you can view in the axon on the right. There is also a small seating or breakout zone located at the top.

The space encourages people to work where they feel most comfortable and can perform to their best ability. There is even the incorporation of phone booths for private calls throughout the space.

There is multiple branding moments throughout the space with incorporations of brand colors

Graphics Work

Description:

To develop an understanding of textile design through exploring color and shapes to create a marketable design, as well as developing intermediate skills in illustrator.

Solution:

I created Radio Ga Ga. I retro looking textile in which I used multiple different illustrator techniques to create my design.

Concept: Radio

Every decade as the music changed so did the technology playing it. With each decade came a different aesthetic and the technology design that came from it. Each brand had a unique look. Starring at the outside of classic radios it can transport someone to think of certain decades. The inside of the radio shows the complex parts of it. Thus, the mystery behind our favorite songs. Looking at the outsides of a radio one would not expect such a complex interior. Inside there are coils and wires on a circuit board all connected working together to play our favorite songs.
