SUSTAINABILITY AND EMPLOYEE WELLBEING AT THE CENTRE

EFI™ Reggiani, the industrial textile printing business of printing technology company Electronics For Imaging, Inc. (EFI), has broken ground on a new textile campus to accommodate ongoing growth. The new 20,000 square metre campus in Comun Nuovo, Bergamo, Italy, is expected to be completed mid year in 2023.

The new facility was designed with environmental sustainability and employee wellbeing in mind. That focus includes plans to install 400 kilowatts of solar panels supplying 60% of the facility’s total energy requirements. Moreover, the building will benefit from superior thermal insulation that will ensure a reduction in heating and cooling costs. PROFITABLE LAMINATION As a laminator, the EWS Workstation is focused on reducing waste, minimising potential damage and saving time. Each of which will help customers reduce costs and maximise profitability.

PERSPEX®re, their first range of 100% recycled PERSPEX® cast acrylic sheets. Now available from stock across all five PDL branches, PERSPEX®re meets the growing demand from wide format print and display companies for recycled substrates with a long lifespan. PERSPEX®re is manufactured using 100% recycled methyl methacrylate (rMMA), obtained from PERSPEX® acrylic sheet and production waste. This waste is depolymerised using various techniques including a distillation process which recovers methyl methacrylate (MMA), turning this waste back into its original monomer regardless of original colour or aesthetic effect. A range of commonly ordered colours are currently held in stock including PERSPEX®re clear, opal, dense white and black sheets. As with all PERSPEX® acrylic ranges, a bespoke colour matching service is available enabling customers to order recycled PERSPEX® acrylic in any colour.

PDL Marketing Manager Luke Martyn commented, “We are delighted to launch PERSPEX®re and further increase the availability of recycled products to our customers. There is a strong demand in many sectors to increase their share of recycled products and the introduction of PERSPEX®re further supports this. By using 100% rMMA in the manufacture of PERSPEX®re acrylic sheets, a valuable contribution is made to the reduction of waste and CO2 as it cuts down on the amount of virgin MMA required. PERSPEX®re is produced with a 10 year external warranty offering longevity of life and a truly long term sustainable product.”

W hile working from home in lockdown, I listened again to the original series on audiobooks online, and it has lost none of its original magic. The advantage of listening rather than watching is that you can still work on the screen while having one ear on the story.

PIXEL WHEN THE MACHINE FAILS — SWITCHES TO MANUAL

The reliance on technology has to be measured with human ability to understand it otherwise it does become the demon in the machine that takes over, from Forster’s desolate vision of the future to the smooth but threatening voice of HAL (Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer) in Arthur C Clarke’s 2001: A Space Odyssey — “you don’t want to do that, Dave.”

Forster’s future is much darker: an earth where the population has retreated underground to hide itself from a hostile environment and is serviced by a machine that provides all its needs from the air they breathe, the food they eat to the information they receive. As suggested in the title, this will not last forever but has been for so long that the original designers have long died and their knowledge with them. No one recognises that the machine is falling apart, and no one knows how to fix it. It could have been written today when the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse have been in full rampage mode, and the climate appears in freefall, not over a hundred years ago in that apparently more carefree world before the First World War. The great thing about really good science fiction writing is that it has the ability to cast a critical comparison on current events by removing the action and actors to an alternative future - good or bad. Even Adams’ humorous adventures in space and time managed to contain some sharp satires on contemporary life - especially marketing executives!Regularreaders, and indeed most print shop workers, will know that we are subject to customers who rely on a technology they little understand and yet assume to be infallible. Before digital data became mobile, it was more difficult to exchange images, and therefore issues were more easily explained and understood. You almost expected things to go wrong by default.

I have actually been using a form of AI for over ten years since acquiring an early version of Nik software as a plug-in for Photoshop. This had what Nik called U-point technology which used control points like pins you could use to isolate and adjust colours and shapes, for example, in many clever ways. The smart bit was being able to manipulate specific parts of the picture rather than the whole image, and this also included options for sharpening, reducing noise and the like. Gradually many of these features, or tools which would perform similar effects, started to be incorporated into Photoshop and then Lightroom, where selections and masks could be edited independently. In addition, the hue, saturation and luminance of individual colours could be diminished or enhanced.Atthesame time, Adobe was developing its own AI in tools like Content Aware, first introduced in 2012, to improve upon the potential of cloning and healing of compatible pixels. The brush tools for those tasks are retained for touch-up of parts, but the main selection interface does a serious job of fixing the big cracks seamlessly. Significantly the working window allows a certain amount of manual adjustment of the controls instead of letting the AI do everything, so you can effectively guide the selection. Similarly, the Select and Mask features and Select Subject and Sky have refining options to make sure the right targets have been recognised.

The most recent example in Photoshop has been the introduction of Neural Filters as a whole new option in the Filters column. This opens up a new dialogue box with about a dozen new toys you can play with. They

I even wondered if there be a better name for it if intelligence gave it intellectual credibility it didn’t deserve, but Advanced Logical Interpretation didn’t exactly roll off the tongue. I’m not trying to belittle its obvious capabilities, just put a note to highlight its possible flaws.

Martin Christie has always been a fan of radio, from a time when entertainment from terrestrial television was limited, and on the basis that images created in the imagination by sounds were often more interesting than those projected on the screen. One particular favourite was the original Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, in which fantastic events and creatures were generated in the mind which were never really matched by its transition to pictures.

While browsing that verbal library, and no doubt prompted by algorithms directing me to science fantasy, I came across a short story by EM Forster, The Machine Stops. Better known for novels like A Passage to India, the prolific Edwardian writer penned this tale in 1909, a time when audiences had been thrilled by the written predictions of Jules Verne and H G Wells and are in some ways a reaction to them.

When computers start telling us what we can and can’t do, it’s surely time to check where the plug is. Of course, they already tell us what we like — or what they expect us to like, and we may already be too far down that digital road to press pause but at least hovering a finger over the option to have time to think is better than blindly pressing enter everyThattime.veryhuman instinct for caution is why a good part of recent columns has been given over to the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence in the creation and manipulation of digital imaging and why it’s important to understand how it works and why it works the way it does. The more it becomes a part of the normal workflow, the less reason there will be to question it or check its results. And by the same logic, the more you rely on it, the less incentive you have to consider there might be a better alternative.

As I often stress, the software may be intelligent, but it can’t always tell the difference between a bush and someone’s head, and what’s more, it doesn’t care either.

Adobe took a much bigger AI step more recently with Sensei, which is way more than smart image editing but integrating a whole layer of machine learning across the whole creative suite of programmes. The aim is to improve workflow across the board as much time is spent between platforms performing relatively similar, repetitive tasks when creatives should be spending more time on the exciting stuff. At least, that’s the sales pitch. My instincts tell me you still need an eyeball to check results not an algorithm.

PROPHET

Colour tends to lose specific colours first but certainly will tend to lack vibrance and saturation. If things cannot be restored, they have to be reimagined, and that is much more of a human talent than any clever filter can tackle.

QUICK PRINT PRO • SEPTEMBER 2022 15 PIXEL PROPHET are not installed automatically; you need to download them individually to use them. They are essentially intelligent shortcuts enabling actions that would otherwise take time to do manually and require some experience.Inarecent column, I showed how I used, at least partially, a neural filter to add colour to an old black and white photo, but also illustrated how I had to go in manually to correct some of the assumptions it had made, like not being able to see the difference between grass and gravel on a river bank. The texture may look different to the human eye, but not that different that it can’t fool a computer, and that is the problem. The machine does need a guiding hand in the first place to recognise subtleties we know instinctively.Perhapsifit had lots of very similar pictures to edit, it would pick it up, which is the whole idea of AI, but until then, it still has a lot to Apparently, learn.one of the next neural filters, currently in beta test mode, is picture restoration. I have seen some very mixed reviews on the internet, which doesn’t really surprise me. Although I haven’t been able to download a trial version to test it myself, I can guess it suffers from the same issues. I do a lot of photo restoration, particularly of people and faces, and there is no quick fix unless you want to just turn the subject into some plasticised cartoon character. You might be able to get away with a landscape or a building looking a little bit digitised, but a person’s skin, facial features and eyes are a very personal feature, immediately recognisable as human and individual. Our own innate facial recognition ability is still way ahead of any smart camera software. There are a number of online programs that will happily turn you into a caricature if that’s what you want, but it might not be so appropriate for a funeral display or a special memory! Most people would prefer to see something more authentic and life-like — wrinkles and all. Our facial expressions are sometimes very subtle but can convey a lot of visual information, which is why they are so important, and hard to recreate. Photoshop has a face recognition feature that can make eyes bigger and a smile wider, but it cannot create a face from a faded photograph.Oldblackand white photos fade, losing any deep contrast — the very thing digital needs as a reference, sometimes getting a yellow hue from chemical residue in the paper.

A number of these new neural filters work in the cloud - actually using Adobe’s super servers, which presumably are more up-todate than even the latest consumer upgrade, and no doubt also giving valuable feedback on what works and what doesn’t. While all use AI, they obviously apply it in different ways to tackle different tasks but use computer judgement to create the results. One of the criticisms is that there are not enough adjustment options to control the processes, but maybe this is the point. One way to add some manual intervention is to output the filter as a separate layer and use masks and colour selections as you have done before, for example. So why use the filters in the first place? Well, like any plug-in, they can be a handy quick fix tool, a handy guide for which way to go - or not, as the case may be. Certainly, with colourising, it seems to work reasonably well on some images and spectacularly badly on others. If you don’t know what the colours should be, it makes a reasonable electronic educated guess. It knows the sky is blue — or anything that looks like sky or grass — for example.

Sgt McGregor original photo coloured by Doug Banks and Adobe — can you tell the difference?

Incidentally, a set of filters that really does work, the previously mentioned Nik is alive and well and living in Paris, having been taken over and developed by DXO. I have the latest version installed and will show you all its magic next month.

I mean, I’m not sure what colour a 1962 BSA sidecar combination was, but this old family group looks pretty good — apart from grannie’s pink nose. On the other hand, for any accurate colour representation, like those restoration Victorian soldiers in their bright scarlet coats and shiny medals and buttons — forget it. You might recall the magnificent Sgt McGregor from a previous column, a veteran of the thin red line in the Crimean War, wonderfully restored by the patience of Doug Banks down to the finest detail. Not sure the Russians will be quite so in awe of the multi-coloured mess Adobe dressed him in. It looks like the filter just gave up on the challenge. Well, at least I’m not going to be replaced anytime soon by an algorithm!

It’s no secret that hiring and retaining talent in today’s marketplace is a challenge. The ability to easily design automated workflows not only enables companies to utilise less skilled workers, it also speeds work through the shop and reduces opportunities for costly errors. Workflows can simplify a wide range of activities that can be labour intensive, require special skills and impact productivity. These can encompass everything from job submission and prepress to make-ready, colour management and finishing.

COVER STORY 18 SEPTEMBER 2022 • QUICK PRINT PRO I f your company is looking at adding a digital press or acquiring one for the first time, I’m sure you have spent a fair amount of effort on due diligence to make sure you know what the latest digital press bells and whistles are and how they can help your business continue to grow. But often overlooked is the value that adding a digital front end (DFE) can bring. Gone are the days when it is sufficient to simply File/ Print. That can still be done, but there are so many advantages to the built-in automation and workflow an effective DFE can offer.

PROFITABILITY

Another challenge most companies are facing today is shortages in paper stocks. After struggling to get sufficient paper stock of the right types to meet customer needs, the last thing you want is for any of it to be wasted unnecessarily! By using automated workflows and specialised tools to ensure an accurate order-to-ship process, your production operation will see fewer errors, higher quality, and thus less of that precious paper supply is wasted.

How many jobs do you process each day? 10? 20? 200? More? If you can save even 15 minutes of prep time per job, how much more capacity does that give you with your current staff? Speeding up the process by 15 minutes per EFI

We were surprised at how many of the respondents indicated they just accepted the recommendation of their chosen printer manufacturer or dealer, and how many of them actually did not know about the many productivity tools a good DFEWeincludes!alsolearned that when companies were offered options, many of them chose the least expensive configuration. These companies are missing out on significant ways to improve both quality and productivity, highly important in today’s competitive marketplace. Here’s why.

JOB SUBMISSION Using a web-to-print solution like MarketDirect StoreFront from eProductivity Software makes job submission fast and efficient. While it is not part of the DFE, a web-to-print solution can be integrated with Fiery DFEs to make the job flow seamless. Then using Fiery JobFlow Base, you can automate the job submission process and batch processing of multiple files with the same print settings. Think business cards, as an example.

PREPRESS The Fiery Workflow Suite offers a number of applications that deliver more accurate print ready files with much less prepress time. For example, Fiery JobFlow automates job preparation steps in prepress workflows to produce ready to print files. It performs essential job processing tasks such as image enhancement, imposition and preflighting, and then submits files to the proper location. It can also automatically archive jobs at various processing stages for later use. The free version, JobFlow Base, is included with most Fiery external DFE configurations. We were surprised at how many of the customers we spoke to during our study have never used JobFlow Base, and some did not even know it was available. That’s just one of the many productivity tools available as part of the Fiery Workflow Suite.

MAKE-READY Here, too, there are a number of tools available to make this a more productive fully visual page layout for ganging and booklet imposition. When combined with Fiery JobFlow, multiple operations may take only a few seconds instead of 15 to 20 minutes each.Orconsider Fiery JobMaster, offering intuitive make-ready including media assignment, chapter definition, advanced page numbering, fully visual tab insertion and design, finishing, scanning and powerful late stage editing features. Each of these steps, done manually, takes time and can be error prone. One respondent to our recent study cited a recurring job that has benefited from Fiery and Fiery Command WorkStation, saying, “We do a book every year that has 13 different colour stocks, so I load six colours in the machine, use Command WorkStation to designate which pages go on each colour, then run the other four and three, then assemble. We can do 300 spiral comb bound books in a day or day and a half.” He noted that trying to run this job any other way would take significantly longer and make it difficult to meet customer delivery requirements.

THE CAR Curious Metallics Electric Blue was chosen as it is almost an exact match to the paintwork on the Lexus UX 300e featured in the video. Kyla comments, “The Curious Metallics Electric Blue, 120gsm, was really easy to cut and mould into shape, and it didn’t pucker easily, which was great.”

Denmaur Managing Director, Nick Gee, stated, “Denmaur and Middleton share the ethos of a family-owned business as well as a tremendous respect for employee commitment, which has been instrumental to the success of both companies. The acquisition adds another facet to our business, allowing us to provide making sizes of paper and board to our customer base with short lead times.” www.denmaur.com

Creative Papers Sales Manager at Antalis, Vicky Weatherington comments: “We have been excited to witness the progress of the project — it’s a great example of the versatility of paper.” www.antalis.com

Denmaur Independent Papers has reached an agreement to acquire the business and assets of the Fine Paper and Conversion division (incorporating Vision Paper and Board) from Middleton Paper Company Ltd, with completion scheduled for mid-July. Middleton’s staff will continue to operate from their location in Walsall and the Middleton brands will also remain under the new ownership. This will represent Denmaur’s first acquisition since Harry E Gould Jr. took a majority shareholding in the company in 2019.

Denmaur has steadily grown since opening their doors in1983 to become one of the UK’s leading paper merchants specialising in supply for the publishing, commercial print and carton board sectors. Also known for their sustainability services, Denmaur recently announced the landmark 100,000 tonnes of carbon-balanced paper sales. Middleton has made their name largely through their conversion services in the graphic paper and board market, with the introduction of a merchanting arm, Vision, in more recent years.

Mike Gee, CEO of Denmaur, noted, “This takes me back to my roots, before we started Denmaur, when I worked alongside Jean Stanley at M6 Paper who were then a very successful merchanting and conversion company. Jean is now part of the Denmaur team and will no doubt share our excitement of sales and conversion coming together again.”

Curious Alchemy Silver and Titanium were chosen for the paper city to create a ‘Metropolis’ feel. The tallest building was over two metres high and therefore required a stiff and robust paper; 300gsm Curious Alchemy proved ideal.

The paper Lexus took five and a half weeks to make and the entire project took over four months to complete, from the initial concept through to filming the final set.

24SHOWTIME SEPTEMBER 2022 • QUICK PRINT PRO Hybrid Services, the exclusive distributor of Mimaki in the UK and Ireland, has revealed it will demonstrate a range of new print technology from Mimaki on its stand at The Print Show 2022. Visitors to the Hybrid Services stand in September will be able to view a number of Mimaki printers in action, including two of the new 330 Series; Mimaki’s latest platform that currently includes solvent print and printer/cutter solutions, plus a dye-sublimation model. Featuring the two solvent machines at the event, Hybrid Services will demonstrate the significant productivity enhancements that the pair of 1.6m machines sport. Both models feature a new X/Y cutter, which provides inline X and Y axis sheet fed cutting. This eliminates unwinding and manual cutting from the workflow, helping printers to significantly speed up and streamline the post print process.Another standout feature is the newly designed multi-media system that allows three rolls of media to be loaded simultaneously, greatly reducing the time and labour required to change print media. A single operator can bring the desired media into position simply by turning the handle on the media changer.Hybrid Services reseller account manager Martin Southworth, said: “Mimaki once again pushes forwards with intuitive, cost effective, and high quality solutions; the two new 330 Series models offer significant advances to an already established technology.“WithMimaki’s heritage in manufacturing dedicated solvent printers stretching back to the early 2000s with the launch of the sector defining JV3, the latest iteration in the ‘3’ lineage is the 330 platform. Jordan Darragh, Founder and CEO of PrintReleaf, said, “We are excited to partner with Kyocera. Our environmental goals and philosophy match Kyocera’s, and we look forward to strengthening our sustainability commitments and growing our global forests together.”

This is where Global sustainability charity WRAP’s voluntary Textiles 2030 initiative is hoping to make a difference. It works with the Manchester Fashion Institute and leading businesses and partners across clothing, retail, supply, reuse and recycling including Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Oxfam. Its aim is to accelerate the fashion and textile industry’s move towards circularity and system change by focusing on:

• Sustainable clothing design and improving the durability of clothing. WRAP research shows that extending the life of clothes by nine extra months can reduce carbon, water, and waste footprints by around 4% to 10% each.

By Phil McMullin, Pro Graphics Sales Manager, Epson (UK)

Kyocera has announced a new partnership with PrintReleaf, a global certification system and software platform dedicated to automating reforestation to offset paper consumption. This allows Kyocera Document Solutions customers to contribute to a reforestation project in Ireland that plants an equivalent volume of trees correlating to the paper usage in Kyocera Document Solutions devices.Inaddition to collecting monthly data on customer print usage, Kyocera will automatically and certifiably plant trees in Ireland based on total paper consumption. Reforesting is done by PrintReleaf at a rate of 8,333 sheets per standard tree, as detailed in the PrintReleaf Standard, and 100% net survivability of the trees is guaranteed. The PrintReleaf portal allows PrintReleaf partners and customers to track their progress and share the ongoing impact of the Taskalfa Pro 15000c production printer.

More than 70% comes from the production, preparation, and processing of raw materials. Therefore, reducing waste in production, before transport and distribution, could lead to savings of 24 million tonnes of GHG emissions.

It is a difficult task if you consider the evolution of consumer habits including fast fashion and e-commerce and the impact they have had on the entire production chain. Emphasis is now placed on the need to shorten production and delivery times, the reduction of production batches, the quest for uniqueness, and extreme customisation of the individual garment.

KYOCERA PARTNERS WITH PRINTRELEAF

“Our partnership with PrintReleaf further supports Kyocera’s commitment to sustainability through our products, manufacturing processes and as a wider organisation,” said Steve Pearce, Group Marketing Manager at Kyocera.

• Encouraging reuse and recycling.

• Providing guidance on fibre and fabric selection to improve sustainability, reduce environmental impact, and increase the usable life of clothing.

The name Kyocera, derived from its founding in Kyoto and its development of fine ceramics, has been used since 1959 as the Kyoto Ceramic Company. Kyocera has been one of the top 500 most valuable companies since its inception, with annual sales of just over 14 billion dollars and 76,000 employees worldwide. www.printreleaf.comwww.kyoceradocumentsolutions.co.uk

“The Kyocera TASKalfa Pro 15000c already reduces the impact on the environment thanks to its ultra low power consumption through inkjet print head technology and by utilising water based inks. By offering the additional reforestation of a customer’s printed pages we believe we have a ground breaking environmental proposition.”

• Building a circular rather than linear approach to textiles and apparel, something consumers, especially younger ones, are beginning to demand.

After responding to a need for fast and cost effective textile sample creation digital Direct To Garment (DTG) printers have evolved to support the design and completion of printed fabrics in a way that ensures economic, logistic and production advantages. They print on demand just what is required, adapt or alter designs quickly, and eliminate long wait times by ensuring local production. They use less water and energy and require lower quantities of dyes and other chemicals used in the pre and post-treatment phases. This powerful combination makes digital production attractive to both printers and brands. Epson’s portfolio features a number of DTG systems that support the ability to rethink the way clothing and accessories are manufactured. They include the SureColor SC-F3000 developed for higher volume users who will benefit from its increased productivity with a low total cost of ownership. There is also the SureColor SC-F2100 that has long been the benchmark of reliable DTG printing. www.epson.co.uk/products/printers/large-format-printers

SUSTAINABLE IS YOUR TEXTILE PRODUCTION?

Goals around the planet, as well as people, prosperity, and peace, are the focus of the United Nations’ sustainability agenda, formulated and adopted by UN member states in 2015. However, to achieve meaningful change member nations need to take action beyond simply signing onto a framework.

Creating a local vibrant textile community can enable brands and retailers to have increased influence over members of its global supply chain. It can also reduce transportation across global supply chains.

• Researching consumer behaviour to help inform brands and retailers on how they can market more durable, sustainable and less resource intensive products.

Digital printing technologies can deliver easier to control, quick response capabilities that supports local manufacturing. They can help reshape the production chain while delivering energy and raw material consumption savings.

The textile industry is under increasing pressure to find alternatives to traditional production processes, to increase its sustainability, and reduce its environmental impact. According to a McKinsey & Company report, created in partnership with Global Fashion Agenda (GFA), the fashion industry is responsible for about 4% of global GHG (greenhouse gas), a figure equivalent to the annual emissions of France, Germany, and the UK combined.

One way to achieve greater oversight and control, plus fast, agile, and individualised production, is through reshoring.

First year students will understand the process and create their own digital designs. Second year students will develop their own textile print as part of a major project. It will include the option to produce meterage. It will also support the students as they explore ways dye-sublimation technology can help the clothing and textile industry respond to key pressures.

“We were outsourcing this work, but the volumes became such that we saw the logic of bringing production in-house,” she says. “We underwent a major reorganisation and some structural changes to the building to accommodate the machine, but it’s already proving worthwhile, not just in meeting existing demand but in attracting new orders.”

Rehana Khan, Lecturer at West Herts College, explains: “We wanted to be able to give students an opportunity to see for themselves how digital print can be used in fashion. Now technology has become easier to use, and more affordable, the time was right for us to make that investment. Having access to the latest technology is essential in making students aware of what is possible.”

It’s a winning philosophy – PDQ has recently taken on new staff and has doubled output compared to pre-pandemic levels. PDQ has longstanding connections to the funfair industry as a result of family connections, says Alison Blyth. “My father was an engineer with a passion for restoring antique fairground rides, most famously the ‘Moon Rocket’ which was revolutionary when first built in the 1930s and is now working at The Dingles Fairground Museum in Devon.” www.serviceoffsetsupplies.co.uk • www.pdqprinters.co.uk

The new addition will be central to learning from September 2022 onwards.

Alison Blyth has owned and run PDQ throughout its 30 year history. Its roots are in litho, and the company still runs a four colour SRA2 and a two colour B3 press, but also offers a full range of services including digital and wide format. “We do everything from labels and variable data through to high quality promotional work, and our customers are local, national and even international. We just got our first order from Latvia! Our new business is by word of mouth, we work hard and always focus on personal service.”

The impacts this can have on fashion design and creativity, and how that will shape future production, is a key consideration for the fashion and textile department at West Herts College following its investment in an Epson SureColor SC-F501 dye-sublimation printer.

MAKING A FASHION STATEMENT WITH DIGITAL PRINT

PDQ Printing Services of Morley, Leeds has installed a Gibson GT-F3020 LED-UV flatbed printer, supplied by SOS (Service Offset Supplies).

“They will be able to see the key role digital print plays in garment production. Students can create their designs and immediately hold their end-product. They can also consider a different approach to garment creation — whether that is with the production process, or the textiles used. It will be the first time they will have used the technology to bring their designs to life.”

Proprietor Alison Blyth says the new machine has primarily been purchased in order to meet a growing demand for the production of outdoor signsespecially for fairground clients — which the Gibson will print directly to Correx board.

“The 24-inch dye-sublimation printer with fluorescent yellow and pink ink was picked for a number of reasons,” explains Rehana. “We had a heat press and so wanted a dye-sublimation printer that was easy to use, had a narrow width, could manage pattern pieces and was compatible with the programmes we were already running. We also liked its ability to offer vibrant colour.”

West Herts College choose Epson SureColor SC-F501 to enhance students’ understanding of textile production

The European Parliament says it is responsible for producing 20% of global wastewater each year while the Australian Circular Textile Association (ACTA) says 30% of clothing is never sold. Dye sublimation does not use water and it enables the on-demand production of garments. It can also drive local production capabilities to reduce carbon emissions and miles travelled. www.epson.co.uk

“We knew we wanted to produce 10ft by 6ft sheets, whereas most flatbeds run 8ft by 4ft,” says Alison. “We approached some major suppliers for info, but were disappointed with the response. It was a huge contrast with SOS, who we have known for many years as our litho plate supplier. When we asked them if they sold flatbeds they immediately gave us a quote, some samples and all the information we needed. This helped us to be confident about the support we will get from them, which is important especially if you’re going for a new market.”TheGibson machine has a maximum print area of 3.1m x 2m, Ricoh Gen6 print heads and uses LED-UV curing. The ink train runs on a magnetic linear motor for reduced friction and maintenance. “It’s fast, it’s accurate and it’s easy to use. We estimate we can produce as many as 200 boards every day.”

“This knowledge will help them be better prepared for their next steps after college,” says Rehana. “It will enable them to be further ahead in the game. Not only will they understand the process and how that can affect design but also how it can shape ordering, respond to demand, and address questions around sustainability.”Shecontinues:

MY WEDDING DAY

A man was found guilty of overusing commas. The teacher warned him to expect a really long sentence.

DREAMER Last night, I dreamed I was swimming in an ocean of orange soda. But it was just a Fanta sea.

The World Cup Final is the same day as Amazon Prime Day, so if it is coming home, it’ll get here incredibly quickly. If you add up all the numbers of 1966 you get 1 + 9 + 6 + 6 = 22. Do the same with 2022 – 2 + 0 + 2 + 2 = 6 and 6 is Szechuan Beef in ginger and special fried rice. It’s coming home!.

TIME TO KICK OFF THE INEVITABLE WORLD CUP JOKES

LATE AGAIN

HAIR TODAY And the unexpected winner of the race was the Barber! However, he did do a short cut.

CRIME OF SILENCE

The boss says, “This is the third time you’ve been late for work this week. Do you know what that means?”Theemployee replies, “That it’s only Wednesday?”

I felt a little lightheaded, so I booked an online virtual doctor’s appointment with my doctor. “What seems to be your problem?” asked the doc. “I’m lightheaded and I think I might be anaemic,” I stated.“Well, drop in for a blood test and we’ll go from there,” replied the doctor. “Anything else I can help you“Yes,with?”I’mwondering if I can still add a few items to my Amazon Fresh order?”

ONLINE APPOINTMENT

YARDSTICK I found a rock that is 1760 yards long. It must be a MILESTONE! RINGING MY DOORBELL My neighbour rang on my doorbell at 3 am. Can you believe it!? Luckily, I was still up playing the drums.

5. Who knew what time it was when the first clock was made? A TRUE GENTLEMAN I gave up my seat to a blind person on the bus. And that’s how I lost my job as a bus driver. WRONG AGAIN I got my wife a metal detector as a present, but she didn’t like it. Strange, as she always likes to dig up things from the past. TELL THE TRUTH When I got to work this morning, my boss stormed up to me and said, “You missed work yesterday, didn’t you?” I said, “No, not particularly.”

STREET PERFORMER An Englishman, a Frenchman, a Spaniard and a German are watching a street performer. While he’s juggling, the street performer notices that the four have a bad view, so he stands on a crate and asks them, “Can you all see me now?” The four guys respond to him, “Yes...”, “Oui...”, “Si...”, “Ja!”

Not a lot of people know this. The swordfish has few predators in the wild. Except for the rare penfish… …which is said to be mightier. FELIX THE COPY CAT

At the funeral of the richest man in town, a stranger saw a woman crying very loudly. The stranger said, “Are you a relative of the deceased?” “Then“No.” why are you crying?”

URBAN LINGO Yesterday I saw a guy spill all his scrabble letters on the road. I asked him, “What’s the word on the street?”

1. At a movie theatre, which ‘arm rest’ is yours? 2. In the word scent, is the “S” silent or “C”? 3. If people evolve from monkeys, why are monkeys still around? 4. Why is there a ‘D’ in fridge, but not in refrigerator?

FIVE GREAT CONFUSIONS

34 SEPTEMBER 2022 • QUICK PRINT PRO THE JOKE’S ON YOU

MAROONED Shipwreck Diary. Day 1: Alone, doing well. Mentally Sound. Met a crab. Day 2: I have married the crab. Day 3: I have eaten my wife.

GRAMMAR SCHOOL

A friend of mine got kidnapped by a group of mime artists. They did unspeakable things to him!

It was my wedding day, and no one was happier than my 78-year-old mother. But as she approached the church doors, an usher asked, “Which side are you on?” “Oh, no,” she said. “Are they fighting already?”

SPEED OF LIGHT Light travels faster than sound. That’s why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

READERS’ SOMETHING TO SHARE?

DON’T YOU JUST LOVE ARTISTS?

SCRIBES

What does a painter do when he gets cold? He puts on another coat. CATCHING UP You know you are getting old when your boss hires a new employee and you find out that you used to hang around with their grandpa when you were growing up.

RICH MAN’S FUNERAL

“That’s why!” SHHHHH. I was in the library once when a man walked in asking for a ham and cheese pizza. The librarian politely told him that he was in a library. The man first apologised and then whispered to the librarian, “Can I please have a ham and cheese pizza?”

BEST CLOCK JOKE EVER After five long years, I’ve come up with the best clock joke ever. It’s about time!
