Winter in Utrecht The new year has begun, so it’s time to start working on those new year’s resolutions. If you want to go outside more, head to Utrecht north-east. From ancient forts, unusual houses, rural areas and a gypsy wagon with coffee facilities: you’ll be surprised at what you come across on a walk through this part of town. Next to the exhibitions, live and online gigs, theatre performances and movies on offer, we’re also taking you further afield, exploring the unique Dutch Waterlines and some of the many castles

Magical realism

In 2017, the Centraal Museum dedicated a huge exhibition to Pyke Koch (1901-1991), one of the main proponents of neo-realism and magical realism in the Netherlands. In the early 1930s, Koch made his name as an artist who could create his own, sinister world using a perfect technique. During a stay in Italy, the artist developed Fascist sympathies, which did not go down well after World War II. However, this did little to damage the popularity of this artist, who spent most of his life in Utrecht. The metres-high wall painting on Van Asch van Wijckskade (created by the artists’ cooperative De Strakke Hand) is a replica of one of Pyke Koch’s works. > on the side wall of Van Asch van Wijckskade 4

Museum Hoge Woerd

This archaeological museum is based in Castellum Hoge Woerd in Leidsche Rijn. The castellum is a contemporary reconstruction of an actual Roman fort, which stood exactly on this spot over 2,000 years ago. Highlight is the 2,000-yearold Roman ship with its complete inventory. Make the most of your visit with one of the audio tours, which are available in English and German (and Dutch). The Winter Garden

A glass conservatory, a beautiful tea garden, a wealth of tropical plants, a splendid high tea, lunch or drinks in an art-deco setting. The Winter Garden (Wintertuin) in Cantons Park in Baarn is a nationally listed building which is now open to the public after 105 years. The wealthy Amsterdammer August Janssen (1865-1918) had this impressive greenhouse built so that he could exhibit his collection of tropical plants, which he had imported from the Dutch East Indies. Playfully melancholic

Lotte Kooistra makes installations that she combines with audio-visual technology. The perception of the space as a whole plays an important role. She appeals to the visitors’ senses, teasing them into feelings of melancholy. ‘I wanted to arouse people’s curiosity: images to explore and food for thought.’ > 23 January to 14 February, EXbunker exbunker.nl

It may be a bit to too cold for swimming trunks, but it’s never too early to start looking for trend-setting new trunks for next summer. The upbeat swimming trunks designed by the Utrecht brand Redfeet brothers (thought up by the brothers Floris, Michiel and Hessel Roodvoet) were inspired by the 1970s. The Mr Olympia model is based on Arnold Schwarzenegger, who wore underpants of the same colour during his first Mr Olympia bodybuilding competition. The trunks even have handy little pockets with zips. They also are sustainable: the trunks are in fact made from recycled plastic bottles. Anatomy Building

t’s one of Utrecht’s best-kept secrets: Zwarte Water. 1 Approached from Lauwerecht, what first appears to be a narrow, romantic canal is in fact a residual channel of the adjacent River Vecht. The name (Black Water) comes from the dark peaty water, and the channel once formed the boundary of the Bemuurde Weerd suburb. It is now one the city’s most beautiful spots. And this place, where time has stood still, is where our tour of north-east Utrecht begins.

MOTORWAY SOUNDTRACK

Keep the water to your right and follow the road until you reach Johannes de Bekastraat, where you turn right. Turn left at the end, and then immediately right, along Menno van Coehoornstraat to Griftpark. As you cross the water, a group of figures created by the famous German artist Thomas Schütte will loom into view: mysterious, rustybrown and larger than life, seemingly immersed in their own private dance. 2 To the east of the park, we cross Blauwkapelseweg and walk along Alexander Numankade. On your right, you’ll see the Biltse Grift, a waterway that runs to Zeist and once served as a transport route. Turn right after the Kapurplantsoen, and cross the wooden bridge to admire the imposing Anatomy Building. 3 Architect Joseph Crouwel, who was also responsible for the former post office on Neude, designed this building a hundred years ago in the style of the Amsterdam School. Until 1988, it was part of the Utrecht

Go back across the Biltse Grift to Dekhuyzenstraat, and you’ll see another typical Crouwel building: the former Small Animal Clinic dating from 1922. Not as famous as Crouwel’s other designs, but the stone animal figurines, protruding rounded extensions and fortress-like battlements certainly make it worth a look. 4 Admiraal van Gentstraat takes you to M.H. Trompstraat, with the Villa Francisca on the corner. 5 Although the flaking plasterwork is proof that this early twentiethcentury building has lost much of its former glory, if you screw up your eyes you can still see the grandeur of the walled garden, the towers and the arched windows. It’s a totally different style of building from the Dingemanshuis, your next destination. 6 Take the footpath leading north over the water from the crossroads of Trompstraat and Van Gentstraat. Turn right into Huizingalaan. You’ll notice the home of the architect Piet Dingemans

(deceased), which stands out thanks to a quirky square tower rising through the treetops. The building dates from 1964. It was intended as a place in which to x le live and work and was given a modern, flexible lay-out. Mrs Dingemans used the tower for painting and meditating. The house is now for sale for a mere € 3 million. Continue towards Ariënslaan and turn left through the tunnel into Park Voorveldse Polder. 7 Here you’ll find Fort De Bilt, one of the defences of the New Dutch Water Line. Turn left onto the footpath just beyond the Ultc-Iduna tennis club, and go under the A27 to reach Voorveldsepad. Turn left again into a more rural area. Okay, the green fields with horses and sheep have a motorway soundtrack and high-rise buildings as a backdrop, but you’re still out of town.

Voorveldsepad leads to a second nineteenthcentury fortification: Fort Voordorp. 8 At the entrance, you’ll find Koffie Bij Maria, a self-service café in a colourful, immaculately styled gypsy wagon. You can make your own coffee or tea inside for just € 1, and buy something to go with it or visit the toilet. Voordorpsedijk and Bastionweg take you to the idyllic village of Blauwkapel. 9 Many of the buildings in this oasis of tranquillity are listed, including the fort Werkspoor dating from 1818kwartie and therchurch from 1451. Nice to know: a meteorite known as the ‘Utrecht’, hit Blauwkapel in 1843. Follow Kapelweg, and turn left into Eyckmanlaan, where you’ll see the former Blauwkapel signal box at the level crossing. 10 Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic has put a tempo rary halt to plans to turn this municipal monument into a hospitality venue. Turn right before you get to Gerrit Rietveld College, towards Professor Reinwardtlaan, which takes you along the waterside through

Tuindorp. Walk over the bridge to Professor Leonard Fuchslaan, and turn right at the end before you reach Kardinaal de Jongweg and the water that runs parallel.

SEVENTIES COLOURS

Walk alongside the water until you reach the Tuindorp-West complex 11 , a collection of flats built in the seventies to house some 1,200 students. It sounds unlikely, but these high-rise buildings are an official municipal monument, partly because of the so-called brutalist architecture and the emergency staircases on the outside of the buildings. It’s fun to wander around the complex, just to admire the seventies orange, green and yellow colours, and the contemporary wall paintings by the Utrecht ‘Verfdokter’. Talmalaan then takes you southwards through the Staatslieden neighbourhood. Stop at Hygge restaurant for a take-away drink and a quick bite to eat. 12 Follow Verenigingsdwarsstraat to the Lauwerecht, which takes you back to Zwarte Water, where our tour of the north-east began.

Anna Niemi came to Utrecht from Finland in her early twenties, on the recommen dation of friends. She never left, and seventeen years later she is as local as can be. Not only does she speak fluent Dutch, she knows more about the city and its history than some of its native inhabitants. Part of this is thanks to her strong involvement in local politics. She participates in discus sions organised by the local council and is a co-City Lead for the panEuropean party Volt; a progressive and relatively new party that works on local, national and international levels to create a more democratic and united Europe. In her cosy apartment in Wijk C, we chat about her favourite activities and go-to places in and around town.

Walking route ‘I love the fact that there is so much nature in and around Utrecht. You can go for a long hike and see mostly green. Some of my favourite spots are Amelisweerd and Amerongen, but I also recommend the walking route around Kanaleneiland, or going towards the Merwedekanaal and the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal. You end up walking along the water and through some forested areas, which is great.’

Communal garden ‘Wijk C has been my home since 2007. It’s a very diverse neighbourhood with some remarkable inhabitants and a rich history. I am also fond of our binnentuin, the communal garden area we recently redesigned with help from the municipality and a landscape architect. It’s open for everyone to come and have a look during daytime.’

Vegan places ‘Being a vegan makes options for clothes shopping a bit more limited. One of my go-to stores is Nukuhiva on Zadelstraat, however; they have great ethical clothing. As for restaurants, I like the Afghan restaurant Sarban

(formerly called Darah) next to the Oudegracht, Van Planten along the Vleutenseweg, and Waku Waku, opposite TivoliVredenburg. They’re all great places for take-out too.’

Local markets ‘Markets are excellent places for sourcing organic and artisan products. I would actually like to see more small cosmetic brands in shops, too, for instance. The good thing about buying at a market is that you support inde pendent businesses or artists instead of big corporations, and often find interesting things. The seasonal markets on the Twijnstraat, Maria plaats and Neude are among my favourites.’

Dance schools ‘On Wednesdays, I usually dance ballet at the Dance School Utrecht (DCU). I’ve been doing ballet for over 13 years now. My go-to place for dance equipment is Flashdance on Voorstraat. I also do African dance at Studio Lionpaw. John Kayongo is a great teacher there, and even organises visits to Uganda to dance with local groups.’

Janice Deul on Voices of fashion: ‘People often say that black people are the ‘Curators of Cool’, but this is never acknowledged or recognised in the circles that matter. This is all down to power and history. That’s why I’m so pleased about this exhibition. It’s a celebration of black beauty, talent and culture, which will hopefully make people think, and finally earn the models and designers the credit that they deserve.

Fashion curator Ninke Bloemberg and co-curator and founder of Diversity Rules Janice Deul are exploring the impact that black designers have had on the world of fashion, and on what is widely considered to be fashionable. cathartic’ THE MAN BEHIND THE UTRECHT BAND I AM OAK IS AS PENSIVE AS HIS MUSIC. IN DECEMBER, HE RELEASED A NEW ALBUM WITH REFERENCES TO THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC. SONGWRITER THIJS KUIJKEN: ‘I WANT MY SONGS TO COMFORT AND INSPIRE PEOPLE.’ By Machiel Coehorst

You write most of the I Am Oak songs on your own. Why? ‘It’s mainly for practical reasons. I have the resources to do it and you always have to make arrangements if you want to get the band involved. You have to peak at a specific time, while at home, I can just work on a song whenever it suits me. I write everything myself, so the basis is mine anyway. But as well as this, I enjoy embellishing and expanding songs. I sometimes plan to share a new idea with the band, but then I just get on with it myself instead.’ What’s the story behind the strange band name? ‘I Am Oak refers to the place that I come from: Bergeijk in Brabant. It’s also a reference to the natural

ike so many other things, I Am Oak has been affected by COVID-19. A recent tour of Switzerland was cancelled. ‘We would have had to spend the first ten days in quarantine. That’s not an option for us,’ says Thijs. ‘Such a pity. It would have been the first time since March that we were all on stage together.’ He spent the lockdown period making and posting videos, in which he added a new twist to songs from his repertoire. As he puts it, to do something worthwhile and show that I’m still alive. ‘I played a guitar song on the keyboard, for example, and vice versa. All in all, I managed to record an existing number every day for fifty consecutive days.’

element in my music and on the album sleeves. I see nature as a good metaphor for the things I want to say. It can transport listeners to a different dimension. This is something that I try to do with music too: help people to escape from reality.’ Your music is often described as understated, searching. Does this reflect your personality? ‘Yes, music is a continuation of who I am. I use music to deal with things, to examine myself and my life. I Am Oak songs are a reflection of my search for who and what I am. I suppose you could say that it’s therapeutic. I find the process of writing and playing music cathartic. This doesn’t just apply to me, but to the listeners too. I hope that my songs comfort and inspire them.’ So the new album has come out last December? ‘Yes, based on the videos that I made this spring, the re-interpretations of old numbers. The sound has been enhanced and remixed, but I haven’t added anything to the songs themselves. The album is a reminder of that strange period

of lockdown. There’s one new song on it. Someone in my family died during that period. It was very sudden and unreal, and the corona restrictions made the funeral, and everything connected with it, very, very strange. I used this experience when I wrote That’s That. In essence, the song is about that death, but because it’s so bound up with the coronavirus, the song also refers to the pandemic.’ Performing abroad is out of the question at the moment, despite your current success in Germany and Japan. ‘Yep. Our album Our Blood came out on a small Japanese label in 2016, and we performed there two years later. It’s a bizarre experience: you have to start from square one, small audiences in small theatres. These gigs were mainly fuelled by my passion for music and my personal love of Japan. In 2019, when our album Osmosis was released, I went back to play solo gigs in a few cities. It’s a fascinating country and I love going there. I appreciate so many facets of Japanese art, culture, language and philosophy. The aesthetics, the relationship with nature, the philosophical character, but also the contradiction of a hectic district in Tokyo right next to a serene zen garden or temple. I think that the original seed for my fascination was planted by the cartoons and Nintendo from my childhood.’ iamoak.com

This is precisely the question that the Utrecht theatre makers De Dansers and Het Filiaal are addressing in this funny, yet alienating, family show. Four drifting characters find themselves in the lobby of the run-down Hotel Hierwaardaar, where bewildering things appear and suddenly disappear again. They try to make themselves at home between the dancing fish, cheeky furniture and furious walls. But how do you go about this? FOAM RUBBER DANCERS Together with top dancers from the Fractal Collective, Duda Paiva Company has drawn inspiration from the work of Alair Gomes. This Brazilian photographer had an exceptional talent for revealing remarkable details in the chaotic world around him. He and his tele-lens took perfect photos of the male body. Gomes called his series ‘Sonatinas’. Koyaanisqatsi: Life out of Balance

This silent documentary from 1982 gives a disturbing account of the influence that technology is having on humans and life on Earth. The mix of slowed-down and speeded-up images, combined with the penetrating ‘minimal music’ of Phillip Glass, has a compelling, almost hypnotic effect. ‘UTRECHT LOCALS ARE SLOW TO ADMIT TO BEING PROUD OF THEIR CITY’

his is where it all happens’, says Soleil, pointing to three presses on the workbench. A cupboard packed with plastic crates full of T-shirts, shorts, sweaters and hoodies in all sizes stands against the opposite wall. This room on Eendrachtlaan, measuring just a few square metres, is the nerve centre of Utca’s Finest; the Utrecht clothing brand that has been growing steadily since 2013. It all started when Soleil and Josje Sturm, both born and bred in Utrecht, heard prissy comments in the Amsterdam fashion world that nothing good ever comes out of ‘Dom City’. ‘We’ll show them, we thought,’ says Josje. ‘We were already making our own clothing, so we decided to start a brand exclusively for the people of Utrecht. Locals know that Utca is a nickname for the city.’ Clothing by Utca’s Finest is emblazoned with typical Utrecht words like ‘Wijffie’ en ‘Jochie’ (which roughly translate as ‘Chick’ and ‘Kiddo’). The shirts and sweaters adorned with the ‘U’ are also a huge hit. They were designed by the rapper Steen. Soleil: ‘He was one of the first to use the U gesture; you make a U-shape with your hand, and shout “UUUU” very loudly. You hear it all the time at matches where FC Utrecht are playing. Although Steen holds some fairly extreme views - he has been very rude about gay rappers in the past - we’ve always liked his graffiti art.’

FRIENDLY VIBE

According to Soleil, Utrecht locals are slow to admit to being proud of their city. But they love the pretty canals and the friendly vibe in many of the neighbourhoods. ‘I get the feeling that pride is growing. You see more and more people putting 030 (the area code) at the end of their name on the internet, for example. I think that Utca’s Finest has done its bit in this respect.’ Seven years ago, the pair came up with the idea of printing the names of Utrecht districts on shirts. As they manage everything themselves, they are able design for very small

As we are talking, a blonde twenty-year-old walks into the workshop of the creative hub. ‘Do you sell deckchairs?’ she asks hesitantly. ‘Yes, we do!’ says Soleil enthusiastically, jumping up to grab the chairs. The pair once had a shop in the city centre, but it proved difficult to combine with designing and processing orders for the webstore. Nowadays, they mainly sell online and via the Centraal Museum shop. They produced the deckchairs - sporting the text ‘OOST, WEST, UTREG BEST’ (EAST, WEST, UTRECHT BEST) - for the openair cinema organised by the Centraal Museum in the Rietveld Schröderhuis last summer.

They are keen for the brand to keep innovating. They recently opened a tattoo shop on their premises, with 030 designs as their speciality. Josje: ‘In recent years, people have kept asking whether we can do tattoos. It seemed like a good idea, so we asked some tattoo artists that we knew to come and work here for our brand.’ New ideas roll out their studios nearly every month. To Soleil’s mind, you have to stay on the ball to stay in the market. ‘I sometimes call out to Josje: “We need something new!” She’s not always onboard straight away, because she’s just too busy, but there’s usually a great new design or concept within 24 hours. If we can keep going like this, I just know that we’ll see more and more people wearing our clothing in the next few years.’ utcasfinest.nl

target groups. ‘We don’t actually produce the clothes until we get an order,’ explains Soleil. ‘All of Josje’s designs are in our computer. She’s the designer, and I produce and dispatch the orders. If someone orders a ‘Wijffie’ shirt, for example, I print out that file. We then print the text onto a bare garment using our heat press. So we don’t need to have gigantic stocks.’

The history of Slot Zuylen, one of the oldest castles on the banks of the River Vecht, is marked by strong, influential women. The writer Belle van Zuylen (1740-1805), for example, lived here until her marriage. In 1763, she published her first book Le Noble, in which she poked fun at the stuffy traditions upheld in noble circles. When it became clear that Belle had written this anonymous book, her father had every single copy destroyed to avoid further scandal. KASTEEL AMERONGEN The interior of Kasteel Amerongen, built on the floodplains of the Rhine, is exactly how the last residents left it in 1977. It gives a fabulous impression of the day-to-day life of an aristocratic family at the start of the 20th century. The castle was originally a 13th-century residential tower, which was later extended to create a castle with towers. In its early years, it was destroyed and rebuilt several times. KASTEEL GROENEVELD Ever since the seventeenth century, regents and merchants have been retreating to rural estates outside the city to enjoy the good life. Kasteel Groeneveld, concealed in the woods near Baarn and surrounded by impressive castle gardens planted in English landscaping style, was one such country estate. The original 18th-century wall paintings and plasterwork remind are evidence of the castle’s rich history. This history also covers the post-war period, when Kasteel Groeneveld was a haven for writers and artists from Amsterdam. The castle offers guided tours, but it’s also worth going for a walk in the gardens. THE EMPEROR HAD HIS ART AND FURNITURE TRANSPORTED FROM BERLIN TO THE NETHERLANDS IN SIXTY TRAIN WAGONS

A castle fit for an emperor: after the German defeat in World War I, the German ex-Emperor Wilhelm II fled his country and headed for the neutrality of The Netherlands. He bought Huis Doorn in 1919 and lived there until his death in 1941. Wilhelm II upheld his imperial allure in the Netherlands, decorating his home with the very best paintings, furniture, silver objects, porcelain and rugs. He had them transported to Doorn from palaces in Berlin and Postdam in sixty train coupés. Baroque art features heavily in the original interior, that is still very much intact. The Defence Line of Amsterdam (Stelling van Amsterdam) and the New Dutch Water Line (Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie) are jointly known as the Dutch Water Lines. Together, they form two hundred kilometres of defence lines that run from Edam in Noord-Holland to the Biesbosch in Zuid-Holland. Much of the New Dutch Water Line is in the Province of Utrecht.

UNDER WATER

Work on the defences started in 1815. They were originally built to protect the west of the Netherlands from wartime attacks from the east. Water played an important role: large areas of countryside were flooded with around 50 cm of water to make them inaccessible to soldiers, horses and vehicles travelling on land, but too shallow for boats. The Line was completely or partially flooded on several occasions: in 1870 during the French-German war, at the start of World War I and at the start and end of World War II. The advent of fighter planes made the Line redundant as a defence strategy and it fell into decline in the 1950s.

But as times changed, people took renewed interest in the Defence Lines. Open green spaces with fields and meadows emerged around the Lines, because building

was not permitted on areas that had been flooded. In future, it is hoped that this landscape will provide solutions to climate issues, such as drought and water storage. Many of the forts are on ‘islands’, where the public was banned for many years so that nature could take its course. The biodiversity is now flourishing. From March to October, you can go on a fort safari with a forest ranger to learn about the unique lichens, tiny insects, bats and breeding birds that live there. You can do this on foot, by bike or in a canoe/boat.

NEW LEASE OF LIFE

Most of the edifices are still intact and have been given a new lease of life. The Werk aan de Korte Uitweg, for example, is now a tea house with canoe moorings, Fort aan de Klop, Fort Jutphaas and Fort de Batterijen have cafés for a drink and a snack, beer is brewed in Fort Everdingen, and Fort bij Vechten has been renamed the Waterlinie Museum. This museum is the perfect starting point for getting to know more about the history and to see how the defence lines actually worked. You can even do a VR parachute jump over the Water Line.

‘Utrecht is lively and vibrant, but also feels a bit village-like. ‘Even though most people speak English, I decided to learn Dutch as quickly as possible. People always say it’s a difficult language to learn. That’s true, but the vocabulary is quite similar to Hungarian and German. If I read something in Dutch, I can more or less guess what it means. I notice people are very happy that I make the effort to speak the language. Whenever I speak Dutch, I get included in their chitchat.’

ART SCENE ‘Dutch people have a name of being super direct, sometimes even bordering on rude. I would say they just tend to speak their mind. I used to work as a television reporter in

Hungary and know by experience that Hungarians almost never say what they actually mean. Here, you have to be very straight-forward in what you want. I still have to get accustomed to that. At the moment, I am looking for work as a freelancer in art and journalism. Besides that, I would like to help internationals feel more at home in the Utrecht art scene, by encouraging them to participate in all kinds of art events. I volunteer at BAK Basis voor Actuele Kunst. It’s a great place for internationals because most of their events are in English. Also, they are very inclusive for every artist and all types of audiences, despite nationality, gender or interest.’

LIKEMINDED ‘I think it’s fairly easy to meet new people in Utrecht. It’s nice to hang out with the other students of my Dutch language course, because we have the same goal and experience the same struggles in trying to reach that goal. Moreover, language is a topic you can always discuss. Other than learning the language, I would also recommend finding a volunteering job. It doesn’t just make you feel involved in what’s happening in the city, but also helps you meet likeminded people. From caring for the elderly to helping out at a festival - there are plenty of opportunities if you make an effort.’

music 1964 The building on the left now houses the Intersport shop, but used to be a famous lunchroom. In the 1930s, Heck’s – later named Ruteck’s – opened its doors in the building with the remarkable tower on the corner of Potterstraat. It was the place to be for the young people of Utrecht, as you didn’t just go here for a drink and a bite to eat but also for live entertainment. Through the years, many swing bands, jazz musicians, orchestras and other artists performed here. Ruteck’s shut its doors for good in 1965. > In collaboration with Het Utrechts Archief. Introdans dances WHIM, Fractured Fairytale by Alexander Ekman, a Swedish choreographer who is known for creating theatrical craziness in his choreographies. In addition, Gallery by Alwin Nikolaïs can be seen. In his heyday this American was widely praised for his inexhaustible creativity and creation of true magic.

MUZE HOTEL IS THE PERFECT PLACE FOR ANYONE WHO ENJOYS SMALL-SCALE, PERSONAL CONTACT. EACH OF THE SIX ROOMS IS UNIQUE, WITH A NOD TO THE MUSEUMS OF UTRECHT. ONE OF THE ROOMS HAS A TELESCOPE, FOR EXAMPLE, AS A REFERENCE TO THE SONNEBORGH OBSERVATORY ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WATER. FROM RUIN TO HOTEL The building on Tolsteegsingel had always been a hotel, but had been abandoned and left empty for years. Plants were growing inside, and the basement flooded whenever it rained. But this didn’t stop Cocky and Paul (sister and brother) and three daughters Bo, Puk and Belle from turning it into a veritable palace. It’s a hotel that offers that extra personal touch: the owners
