Welcome to Utrecht The chances of the Winter King covering Utrecht in another thick pack of snow are pretty slim, but we live in hope. However, one thing we can hopefully be certain of is a big slice of culture. How about visiting one of the new exhibitions in the Centraal Museum, Museum Catharijneconvent or Museum Speelklok? Or a theatre show by Podium Sprits for our youngest visitors in ZIMIHC Theater? Other bright spots in the cold, dark months include the Gluren bij de Buren living room festival, the Stukafest student digs festival and the swinging UJazz jazz fest at Rotsoord. We’re also donning our hiking boots to discover some beautiful winter nature trails and last but not least, we’re highlighting five places-to-be this winter. Think crackling woodfires, an XL board-game cupboard and most importantly, lashings of hot chocolate. Perhaps winter’s not that bad after all?

Light in the darkness

In the hours of darkness between sunset and midnight, 27 works of light art come to life. Together, they form Utrecht Lumen. Some of the light art plays with famous buildings, such as the Willibrordkerk or Paushuize, which is where the only Dutch Pope once lived. Or does he perhaps still live there? Light artists Jan Hein Daniels and Willem Hoebink bring the Paushuize and the University building at the top of Trans to life: light fills the windows with glimpses of old souls and poetic illuminated images. Other works of art take you to unexpected places that you wouldn’t glance at twice during the day, such as the recesses on Drift and the tunnel leading from Ganzenmarkt to the basement underneath the Winkel van Sinkel. You can walk past all the light art yourself, or book a guided tour. > From sunset to midnight, various locations discover-utrecht.com/collection/lumen

HANGING AROUND

The brand-new Galerie Larik 8 , just a stone’s throw from De Nijverheid, opened its doors late last year. This is also a largely self-built, circular building. After visiting the exhibition, you can settle yourself down in NAR - Café der Kunsten 9 . Although this is the perfect place to hang around for the rest of day, you could consider watching a film at De Nijverheid or Hof van Cartesius, or going back to Boot 122 or De Leckere for a beer. Or go dancing in WAS. 10 , a club situated in the former washroom of the Werkspoorkathedraal. Check the agenda before you go because the club isn’t open every week.

THE LOCAL’S FAVOURITES

Q&A WITH OMAR WASEQ By Wieneke van Koppen

Sarban

Until recently, Omar Waseq and Alwin Beumer’s Filmcafé was a popular spot in the cultural landscape of Utrecht. A disastrous blaze meant that the Filmcafé was unable to open its doors again. But there is now light at the end of the tunnel. ‘We were closed for months due to the pandemic and then the fire was the final straw. But we started to feel the urge again, so we opened the Kaasbar on Oudegracht. Having done this, we realised that the Filmcafé simply had to return. Thanks to a crowd-funding campaign and a large dose of creativity, we are delighted to report that the Filmcafé will reopen in 2022 in a new, mysterious location. We’re keeping the exact spot a secret until the day of the relaunch. Like the last café, we’ve invested in good sound and acoustics, but the furniture will be a jumble of stuff we’ve managed to scrape together. We want it to be a place run by and for the people of Utrecht, like the original Filmcafé, so we’re open to suggestions and initiatives. You can help us by ordering a metre of beer in advance, which will guarantee you a whole row of delicious ales at the opening. As you’ll see, the vibe at the Filmcafé hasn’t changed, but the food is a lot better! Instead of just having a pizza oven, we’re now offering a bit more culinary choice.’

Jan/Feb 2022 — MAG Utrecht

Afghan hospitality ‘The best place to eat in Utrecht is Sarban (Oudegracht a/d Werf 161), started by two guys from Afghanistan. It’s where I come from and I recognise the typical Afghan hospitality. The food and wine menus are in perfect harmony. If you go, you mustn’t miss the mantoe. The name of this dish roughly translates as ‘my you’, and it’s traditionally served on special days in the north of Afghanistan. People spend hours making this dish that most closely resembles steamed tortellini with lentils, spices and minced meat. It says: I’m giving you my time and my energy. It looks very festive and Sarban also serves a vegetarian version.’

Off the beaten track ‘More and more bars and restaurants in Utrecht seem to be competing to be the trendiest or best places in town by adding botanical vibes and Chinese influences. I’m a huge fan of Willem Slok (Korte Koestraat 2), mainly because no-one cares where you’re from or what you do. You can just go in and order a beer or jenever and mind your own business. It’s so relaxed. It’s been there for a quite a while, but despite having lived in Utrecht for thirteen years, I only discovered it three years ago. It’s off the beaten track I suppose.’

Fresh ‘At Op Saj (Steenweg 1), absolutely everything is home-made, from the wraps and falafel to the sauces and hummus. Every morning, the Syrian owner will be there peeling the garlic for his garlic sauce. You can tell it’s all freshly made, and that’s what good food is all about. I come here for lunch a lot and I’ve never had anything I didn’t like.’

Amelisweerd StayOkay

the cherry tree that once stood in my garden. I just go there to sit.’

Croquetas ‘On Biltstraat, you’ll find a Spanish tapas bar that does the most amazing croquetas. The woman who works there speaks such fluent Spanish that we always assumed she was the owner. Apparently she’s not: she’s the next-door-neighbour and she just learned Spanish. If you go, ask her (or one of the other people working at Bar Bellota) about the chef’s daily special.’

Creative talent ‘My last tip isn’t a place that you can visit, but an initiative to keep your eye on. We have a wealth of creative talent in Utrecht, and La Cassette is one of them. In 2022, one of their ventures will be to screen films in an abandoned bike depot. It promises to be well worth a visit!’

Nostalgic ‘There’s a field close to StayOkay Bunnik with a fabulous cherry orchard. It makes me feel very nostalgic as it reminds me of

‘I nearly threw

in the towel after my debut’

GIGS AT MAJOR FESTIVALS, TOURS ABROAD AND AN ALBUM RECORDED IN NASHVILLE: JUDY BLANK’S CAREER CURRENTLY KNOWS NO BOUNDS. WE TALKED TO THIS UTRECHT-BASED SINGER-SONGWRITER ABOUT HER ADVENTURES IN AMERICA, MENTAL PRESSURE AND HER END-OF-THEWORLD SONGS. By Rosa Lee Szarzynski

J

udy Blank hasn’t switched off since the moment she took part in the TV show De beste singersongwriter van Nederland. In the six years that followed, she was either performing in Sweden, providing the support act for Wilco or having adventures in the USA. ‘COVID-19 was a welcome break after all that hard work,’ she explains. ‘Instead of grabbing every opportunity to catch the limelight and plan my next move, I finally had time and headspace to work on my new album. And to get a new band together, to back me at my concerts.’

HAVE YOU DRAWN INSPIRATION FROM THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC? ‘Yes, I’ve been reminiscing and jotting things down in my notebooks. Like last summer when I was touring in England and caught COVID-19. I felt dizzy and tired, and was struggling with my energy levels. I just couldn’t be bothered and even cancelled gigs when I got home. In my darkest hours, I was afraid that I would never enjoy music again. But as I sat sobbing at my piano, this song about how I was feeling suddenly engulfed me. Just for a minute, I was that 16-year-old girl again. The one who wrote songs as a way of processing her emotions. A few weeks later, I was back on stage doing what I do best. My last album features end-of-the-world songs about feeling aimless, and songs about mental pressure.’

DOES THAT PRESSURE AFFECT YOU TOO? ‘I don’t like the idea that a person can’t be imperfect, that you always have to excel. It’s a theme in my songs. I sometimes find life as an artist, and other people’s expectations, hard to deal with. I feel pressurised by questions like: when’s your next album coming

out? Or I worry that my music isn’t good enough, or that fans won’t like it being different from my previous stuff. But I try to focus on the high points and that makes it all worthwhile.’

Photography Nico Brons

HOW DID YOUR LOVE OF AMERICANA COME ABOUT? ‘I used to listen to The Beatles as a child, and in my teens, I became a huge fan of punk bands like Green Day. I gradually became more critical: I wanted everything I wrote to have thought-provoking lyrics and an exciting melody. I started piano lessons when I was 14 and went to

music academy after secondary school. Appreciating, understanding and being able to explain really tricky jazz music or music theory was a sport there. But while I was travelling through the USA, some friends took me to Nashville. The music culture there really inspired me and for the first time, I realised that music doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s about the vibe and the message in the song, not about how many difficult chords it contains. Then I started listening to 1970s music, like Joni Mitchell, for example, and I’m experimenting with 1980 synthesizers for my new album. I don’t want to

MUSIC IS ABOUT THE VIBE AND THE MESSAGE IN THE SONG, NOT ABOUT HOW MANY DIFFICULT CHORDS IT CONTAINS’ been a tourist, but when I went back a year later, it was to be part of day-today life. I did some open mic sessions, and was asked to perform in coffee bars. There weren’t any pianos, so I practised like mad on a guitar someone lent me. People liked my songs and I met local musicians. I started to regain my confidence; it felt like people were seeing the real me. And in 2018, I recorded my own album in Nashville.’

YOU TRAVELLED TO THE USA WHEN YOUR FIRST ALBUM, WHEN THE STORM HITS, FLOPPED. WERE YOU TRYING TO ESCAPE? ‘Perhaps. I nearly threw in the towel after my debut album, because I realised that people just weren’t getting it. I wasn’t allowed to perform at Noorderslag, for example. I needed to charge my batteries and to me, America was an exciting country full of adventure and a cool language. I started writing songs in English quite early on. I wanted to nail it and where better to practise my English than in the USA? So I flew to New Orleans: the birthplace of jazz.’

DID YOU MANAGE TO RECHARGE THOSE BATTERIES?

‘I felt at home straight away and made loads of friends. On my first visit, I’d

‘I know! I suddenly got loads of notifications on Twitter, but I didn’t believe it at first. Elton is my King of Melody. I asked my management to check, and it was true. It was such a boost, partly because the song hadn’t done much in the Netherlands. Now it’s one of my fans’ favourite tracks.’

THE HAM QUESTION: UTRECHT OR NASHVILLE?

‘Before the coronavirus pandemic, I wanted to live in Nashville. But America isn’t a good place to live at the moment with all the political tension. I recorded my first album in Utrecht and I’ve really embraced the city. I can drift away watching films in the Louis Hartlooper Complex or just sit by myself in Koffie Leute with a book or my notebook. EKKO has a special place in my heart too. I’ve chosen Utrecht; I feel at home here.’

Welcome to the heady 1960s, one of the most revolutionary and religious periods in Dutch history. At the beginning of the decade, the church still had a huge influence on people’s day-to-day lives. Large families were the norm, mixed marriages were taboo and you got your shopping from a grocer who shared your faith. But cracks started to show. Women took the pill, the gospels were abandoned and homosexuality became an option. > from 4 February, Museum Catharijneconvent catharijneconvent.nl

It’s an ordinary utensil that you sit on every day without a second thought: a chair. But are you being fair to the chair? The Centraal Museum has over one hundred splendid chairs on display, all of which have something to say in terms of material, technology or societal development. Alongside more familiar chairs, you also see designs and works of art that are less familiar to the general public. > from 5 February, Centraal Museum centraal museum.nl

Exhibitions & Museums COMPOSING MACHINE

THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS COINCIDENCE While Netherlands was in lockdown, the restoration team at Museum Speelklok continued their work on a ‘composing machine’. They were following in the footsteps of the ingenious inventor Diederich Nicolaus Winkel, who worked in Amsterdam around 1800. Exactly 200 years ago, Winkel had already found a mechanical method for making the random choices that our current algorithms make for us: the Componium. Unfortunately, the 3.5-metre-long original model no longer works, but the restoration team managed to construct a working mini-version. > until 4 September, Museum Speelklok museumspeelklok.nl

Galerie SANAA is presenting a group show by artists from the Middle East, such as Raafat Ballan, Fatima Barznge, Oussama Diab and others. Raafat Ballan was born in Syria in 1990. He was trained as a painter at Damascus University. Ballan left Damascus shortly after graduating and relocated his studio, first to Lebanon and then Turkey. He eventually settled in the Netherlands in 2015. In his work, Ballan uses art as a tool for people to express emotions other than with words, especially for those who experienced war or any kind of conflict. > from 15 January to 20 February, Galerie SANAA galeriesanaa.nl

CLAUDIA-CORINA FROM GERMANY

CLAUDIA-CORINA GIESE IS FROM BERLIN AND CAME TO UTRECHT TO DO HER PHD ABOUT A FASCINATING TOPIC: HOW SPECIFIC ORGANIC MATERIALS ALTER IN ASTEROIDS. THE SCIENCE FICTION SOUNDING TOPIC IS ROOTED IN A CHILDHOOD INTEREST AND THE LOVE OF THE OLD ANIME, SAILOR MOON. WHERE’S THE CENTRE OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM? AND HOW DOES IT ALL FIT INTO OUR LITTLE CITY? By Anita Nánási

‘It all started with an anime. I watched Sailor Moon and like most of my generation, I loved it. There’s astrology, astronomy, and mineralogy in the show. My research is in an interface between astrochemistry, astrophysics and geoscience, geochemistry, and additionally organic chemistry. Let’s say it’s a mixture of a lot of chemistry and using the information we have from Earth transferred to how we think certain reactions would have happened on asteroids. In the last few years, I have experimentally investigated a specific organic material and how these react or interact under certain asteroid-like

conditions. You have this organic material, minerals and water, you mix everything nicely and heat it up and wait to see what happens. Once I used a picture of a witch stirring in a pot in front of her, staring at all these bubbles to describe how I sometimes felt during my experiments.’

CENTRE OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM ‘What I love about Utrecht is that we have the Sun in front of the Academiegebouw and the entire solar system is built up from there. Utrecht is the centre of the solar system of the Netherlands! So I can’t be in a better place to work. I did my PhD dividing my time between Utrecht University and Leiden University. What I was missing is a centralised department I could work for. We have great minds in the academic life of geo-science and astrophysics across The Netherlands, but there’s no single combined department for it.’

SOCIAL CIRCLE ‘Traditionally, I hate every city I move to in the first year. After that first year, you start to like it more and more and start seeing the good sides. The more you live here, the more you see the differences, the advantages and the disadvantages and the more you can weigh in to what you prefer personally. You

build your social circle. The more you get to know people and the more you get to know the city, the more you start to like it.’

NEVER BORING ‘Many people complain about the size of Utrecht. As I am from Berlin myself, Utrecht is big enough for me. Everything is here, in terms of cultural events, restaurants, bars, clubs, people and the university. There’s always something different, something new everything changes every year, when new students with their new student rituals come to the city. So it’s never boring. And if you don’t find what you’re looking for, seriously: how long does it take to get to the next city? The best part of living in Utrecht is that you can easily go anywhere in the country from here.’

MEET-UPS I’m a big fan of Mariaplaats, as it’s the best place for any type of meet-ups with friends. Café Jozef is very cosy and the food and drinks are tasty. AFTER-WORK-BEER The international neighbourhood group of the UU has introduced me to after-work-beer-pub Jan Primus. NATURE Amelisweerd is great for a walk. The Future is not what it used to be

An ode to the uncertain and unfinished

Don’t miss it!

EVERYTHING IS CONSTANTLY IN MOTION. NOTHING EVER STAYS THE SAME, EVEN IF NOT EVERY CHANGE IS PERCEPTIBLE. WE CANNOT STOP THE CLOCK. THE HOURS OFTEN SLIP BY, BUT AT OTHER TIMES SEEM ELASTIC AGAIN. ‘The Future is not what it used to be’ by Panama Pictures is a physical and sensory performance about the mystery of time. The performers show the human desire to create cohesion in a fragmented world, to not lose the past, to get a grip on the future and to be absorbed in the moment. Floating objects form a surreal and poetic universe. On crumbling fragments, solidified in time, the performers balance high in the air. Above the gaping abyss,

they unravel the connection between time and gravity. Without something to hold on to, they move into a vacuum. Beyond all certainties, they embrace risk and play with our perception of time. This performance is part of the National Theater Weekend 2022 and therefore the tickets cost only 10 euros. Saturday 29 January, Stadsschouwburg Utrecht Buy tickets at: ssbu.nl
