MAG Utrecht — Nov/Dec2021

Welcome to Utrecht When it comes to cultural events, there’s plenty to do in the last months of the year. In the first week of November, you can visit the Saint Martin Route, a route around over 200 magical light sculptures. In the same period, Le Guess Who? - the festival for boundarycrossing music and culture will be taking over the city with performances by more than 150 artists. We’ve also lined up some newly opened cafés and restaurants, where you can go for an evening of fine dining, or opt for coffee and a cake, or a hearty lunch. And in case you don’t know what to give your loved ones (or yourself) for Christmas, we’ve lined up some great local and often sustainable products that would make anyone happy!

Winter shopping in Merwede

On 27 November you can wander around the creative hotspots in the Merwede district, such as Vechtclub, Kanaal30, De Alchemist and Createur, as they open their doors for some winter shopping. You can buy unique, hand-crafted gifts made by talented local makers, listen to live music, check out some music and theatre performances and have something to eat and drink.

Stadsjochies

Last summer saw the opening of Stadsjochies in a lovely spot in UtrechtOost. Stadsjochies is what’s known as a ‘kastaurant’, a place where your breakfast, lunch or dinner is made from ingredients from the restaurant’s own greenhouse and garden. The dishes change with the seasons, depending on the available products. They also adhere to a zero-waste policy: every part of all of the products is used, from stalk to flower. You can go on a herb safari in the tea garden, there’s a shop with home-grown fruit and veg, as well as a playground for the children. > Rijndijk 14 stadsjochies.nl

ALTHOUGH SOME OF THE ROBOTS THAT ARTIST BRAM ELLENS HOLDS IN CAPTIVITY ARE A BIT GRISLY, THEY ARE ALSO VERY APPEALING. ‘I’M GOING TO PUT A NEW-BORN ROBOT UNDER A HEAT LAMP. HOW DO YOU FEEL WHEN YOU SEE IT?’

‘L

ook, there’s Bassie, the only robot that’s allowed to walk around here’, says Bram Ellens. He’s referring to a white help robot that’s slowly rolling across the room. He passes us, but suddenly stops at a concrete pillar. ‘C-c-c-can I help you?’, Bassie asks. Bram noticed him at a supplier who leases robots. He was actually there to see whether Spot, a flexible robot dog, was suitable for his exhibition. ‘Spot was so smooth that he was quite boring. But then I spotted Bassie in a corner. He’d been rejected because he stammered and couldn’t tell the difference between a person and a pillar. This was endearing enough for my exhibition, which represents a kind of shelter for the unwanted and the misfits.’

THREATS & FLATTERY

‘Creatures’ are on display in every room. There’s a tower of cages, each one containing an electric car with a tiny, sweet-looking robot that dances out of a box. But there also are more grisly machines, which are firmly chained down and move like wild animals. Jan, an invisible AI robot in a glass safe, is particularly intriguing. Warning signs have been posted on the door. Whatever you do, don’t let Jan out of the safe. Walking into his

Photography Lize Kraan

The artist (who used to be an entrepreneur in the IT world) has been residing in Buitenplaats Doornburgh in Maarssen since July, surrounded by machines. His exhibition Robots in Captivity has been open since July, but is very much a work in progress. Bram is continually improving his installations and producing new work. A robot dog in a glass jar is currently lying on his workbench. ‘I’m going to preserve it’, he explains. ‘I want to create a whole showcase with ‘preserved’ robots in preserving jars. I’m also going to put a newborn robot under a heat lamp. How do you feel when you see it?’ He talks lovingly about the machines. During the tour, he calls them ‘my buddies’ and this is precisely the feeling that Robots in Captivity conjures up. Right from the very first

installation, three remote controlled cars that look as if they’re trying to get out of their cage, you feel as if you are looking at living creatures. ‘This is the first time I’ve used this theme,’ says Bram. ‘My son was given one of these cars for his seventh birthday. It crashed into the wall as soon as he tried it out. It reminded me of an animal trying to escape. I thought: why on earth do I suddenly feel pity for this inanimate object? I’ve been exploring the concept ever since. What sort of things can I assign human or animal features, shove into a cage and bring to life, as it were?’

area, you hear a friendly greeting. He tells you the code to the safe and asks you to let him out. ‘I have fed Jan with hundreds of different arguments for getting his own way, in ten categories. They include threats, flattery and rousing curiosity. Jan learns which arguments work best from the visitors, and becomes even more adept at talking his way out of the safe. Threats don’t seem to work because people hardly respond to them. We’re going to restart him soon, with new arguments.’

WITHOUT EMPATHY

The current exhibition is still a work in progress. Artists including Lisanne Buik and Mette Sterre will produce work relating to the theme, and lectures about robotics and ethics are being organised. ‘We need to talk more about the increasing use of robots in society’, says Bram. ‘Take, for instance, the gradual appearance of self-scan tills, which are at the expense of human contact. I’m no great fan of help robots either. Robots are born without

empathy. They don’t care whether they pass you a plate of food or chop off your hand. I think that the elderly and the sick need kindness and warmth. Robotisation is degrading the care sector.’ A quick smile. ‘I love being provocative, but of course this is just my personal opinion.’ He points to Bassie, who is still trying to help the pillar in his own stammering way. ‘I hope that people will ask themselves how they’d feel if one of his siblings appeared at their bedside. Walking around the exhibition, I hear these discussions all the time. I want to create more exhibits in the coming months and improve the technical side of others, but I think I’m on the right track in terms of social impact.’

Koffieboontje

Julianapark

You might have heard of the Utrecht-born Ebru Aydin (30) because of her photo project Hijabverhalen, a series of colourful portraits of women in the Netherlands who wear the hijab. There’s always a lot of talk about hijabs, but what do they mean to the people who wear them so proudly? And how do hijabs impact on their lives? ‘This is what I’m trying to convey in this self-initiated photo project.’ Aydin is an autodidactic photographer. ‘I was born and bred in Utrecht and studied sociology in Amsterdam. As a teenager, I was ready for a different, bigger city. As a young Muslim woman, there was simply more for me to do in the capital city, including lots of great halal places to eat. After I graduated, I started to appreciate Utrecht again. It’s a nicer, more friendly version of Amsterdam. I can really see the attraction now.’ So Aydin enjoys living in Utrecht, but her work takes her out of town a lot. Not only as a photographer. ‘My social engagement is the real thread running through my work. You can see it in my photography, which I do independently and to order. But this isn’t all I do: I also think about designing a fitting tribute for migrant workers, I’m making a podcast for Wij Blijven Hier, I’m an active moderator for discussions about inclusion and diversity, and a critical friend.’ But where does this busy bee like to spend her free time?

Personal touch

Photography Nezaket Aydin, Marco van Reeuwijk

‘’t Koffieboontje (Oudegracht 92) has been a favourite since the start, and it was where I picked up my coffee during the pandemic. I walk along Oudegracht a lot, and I never tire of it. It’s so pretty. I go to ’t Koffieboontje because I like their coffee, it’s a great place to sit and they have nice cakes. But it’s the personal contact that I really enjoy. There are plenty of places where they serve good coffee, but they spoil it by telling you how you should drink it. Not here. But they do remember that you drink cappuccino with soya milk, and it’s this social side that makes all the difference to me.’

Pancakes with syrup ‘As well as strolling along Oudegracht, I also like walking in the woods at Rhijnauwen. I go to the pancake restaurant there with my friends and we eat old-fashioned pancakes with syrup and icing sugar. Ha-ha! I started going there about seven years ago – it was a real discovery. Before that, I used to go to Noordse Park or take a picnic to Julianapark.’ Cousina

Julia

Special place ‘Julianapark is a special place for me because it reminds me of my grandad and the last generation in my family history. My grandad migrated to Utrecht many decades ago. If they wanted a nice photo back in those days, they used to put on their best clothes, do themselves up and come to this park. He moved back to Turkey when I was born, but because of the photos, I always think about him when I’m in this park.’

Chill vibe ‘Surya (Janskerkhof 23) is a great place to go with friends. It feels like a proper restaurant, but it’s still got that chill vibe that attracts a multicultural clientele. They have loads of vegetarian options, but you can get meat dishes, chicken for example, here too. And you can eat halal if you want.’

Cake and couscous Although I’ve never actually been there, stepping into Cousina (Damstraat 2) feels like landing in Morocco. I haven’t been to Cousina that often, but the atmosphere is so good that I’m giving it as a tip anyway. Officially it’s a café with delicious cakes, but they serve fabulous couscous too. It’s open until 18.00, so I’m definitely going again soon!’

OUR ARMS GREW TOGETHER

Makers duo Marta & Kim sketch a physical metaphor of their relationship. They paint an intimate, honest picture of an issue that usually remains firmly behind closed doors: the sensuality and vulnerability of fusing two bodies to form one. But also the feelings of claustrophobia literally not being able to escape each other, losing control and personal interest. When ‘trusting you with my life’ is not only a metaphor but also a physical reality and necessity, we finally see and feel what is really at stake. Hidden Musics

A definite must-see are the performances by international artists who normally don’t perform on stages or festivals. The often centuries-old traditions they practice mostly have their origins in ‘hidden’ or remote areas around the world. The music of Etran de L’Aïr represents everyday life in Niger, such as at weddings, village festivals and political events. Egyptian ensemble Mazaher is one of the last practitioners of the Zãr ritual, the TunisianBelgian musician, poet, writer, actress and visual artist Ghalia Benali breathes new life into sufi songs with her new project ‘Hadret

Ishq’, and Mónika Lakatos was the firstever Roma singer to win a popular Hungarian talent show in 1996.

Pink Oculus

Dutch-Surinamese vocalist, producer and composer Pink Oculus presents her latest project ‘Before Wisom’ at the festival. Together with audio-visual artist Boris Acket, spatial designer and scenographer Dennis Vanderbroeck, and curator and writer Vincent van Velsen, she created an audio-visual show that focuses on afro futurism. ‘We want to create a temple, a ‘safe space’ together, where there is room for empowerment and free expression and where everyone can be themselves’, Pink Oculus says about her project. The album of the same name will be released in 2022.

Henk Wildschut’s photos, which feature improvised gardens in refugee camps, show how thriving plants can provide comfort in the most desperate of situations. Is our current exploitation of nature as idyllic as we think? In sharp contrast (literally) to the idea of a garden as a haven of peace and tranquillity, the South African artist Lungiswa Gqunta presents a lawn as a dangerous landscape of glass shards. > until 9 January 2022, Centraal Museum centraalmuseum.nl

MARKET PEOPLE

Utrecht has been a market town for over a thousand years. Even today, dozens of markets are held in the city every week: the fabric market, the flower market, the Vredenburg market and local weekly markets in countless neighbourhoods. This exhibition gives you an idea of the history of Utrecht’s markets and introduces you to the market traders and market-goers. Who uses the markets, and why? And do our markets still have a future? > until 23 January 2022, Volksbuurtmuseum volksbuurtmuseum.nl

NICO KOSTER

Galerie Quintessens is exhibiting a selection of work by the photographer Nico Koster (1940). He took his first professional photos for De Telegraaf newspaper, where he worked from 1963 until 1988. When asked to take photos to accompany art objects, Koster discovered that he relished the contact with artists. He met Chagall and Willem de Kooning, and felt particular chemistry with the CoBrA artists. Making portraits of artists became an important part of his work. Koster always printed his portraits of these striking figures in black-andwhite. ‘The contrast is more powerful, which makes the photos more exciting’, is his own explanation.

ARTISTS TEST THE BOUNDRIES OF SPACE, SOUND AND IMAGE CULTURE

POP-UP ART

UNCLOUD:‘TRANSLIMINAL’ Until 2018, the Pieter Baan Centrum on Gansstraat was a psychiatric observation clinic, but until 21 November it is a pop-up museum for audio-visual art. In Uncloud: ‘Transliminal’, over twenty national and international artists test the boundaries of space, sound and image. Transliminal is a metaphor for the current state of the world, a world in which we have all become alienated from our old reality. The exhibits include the latest work by the multidisciplinary art collective Tundra from St. Petersburg: an installation in which algorithms translate data from the immediate surroundings into an intriguing audio-visual experience. You will also see work by the Russian artist/inventor duo 404.zero, Tatsuru Arai from Japan and Arash Akbari from Iran.

Four lads want to break stuff in a world that is already broken. It’s as if the carpet is always being pulled out from under their feet, as if someone is pulling their strings and as if people would rather stare at a screen than at them. The menu has strong Indian undertones, as Brechje lived in India for seven years. The all-day breakfast selection comprises things like scrambled tofu masala and poha, a traditional Northern Indian breakfast made of flattened rice, seasonal veg and peanuts. JAIMALA FROM INDIA

FROM INDIA, VIA THE UNITED KINGDOM AND ROTTERDAM, JAIMALA WANKHETE SHETTY AND HER HUSBAND FOUND THEIR HOME IN AMERSFOORT. AFTER A BUMPY START OF HER LIFE IN THE NETHERLANDS, JAMAILA FOUND HER OWN WAY TO HAPPINESS. SHE COMMITTED HERSELF TO HELPING EXPATS IN FIGURING OUT HOW TO SETTLE SMOOTHLY AND FIND STABILITY IN THE NETHERLANDS. By Anita Nánási

‘My husband works in Ede. After I finished my studies in Rotterdam we started the hunt for a house. We looked in many places in the area, but really liked Amersfoort. The heritage of the place, the old, majestic atmosphere and people all seemed lovely. Though the expat community is limited compared to Rotterdam, you will still feel very welcome. When we visited the city, we didn’t feel out of place. Though most of the population is Dutch, there’s no differentiation. Everyone will be smiling at you and everyone is friendly. I think Amersfoort is lovely. I have to take a picture of the Koppelpoort every time I’m in the city centre as it is so beautiful. I have so many pictures of already! The rest of the city is very modern. This mix makes me feel at home.’

FAMILY-ORIENTED ‘Rotterdam is the place to be for students.

Amersfoort is more peaceful and has its own pace. The communities are very familyoriented (which is an advantage, because by the time this article is published, Jaimala and her husband’s will have been welcoming a baby – edit.). I was in India at the beginning of my pregnancy. There’s a lot to arrange regarding that and I was afraid that was going to miss out on things because I wasn’t here. But everyone was very helpful when we came back. Even though the specialists I chose were not available anymore, they would recommend other colleagues to go to. That was a big relief.’

MAKING THE BEST OF A BAD SITUATION ‘The first three months in the Netherlands were trying. I got into a bike accident, our first apartment was a disaster and I couldn’t find a parttime job. I had been living in the UK for three years and visited the Netherlands and Rotterdam during that

Jaimala’s favourites DELICIOUS PASTA Cribs is not a very fancy restaurant, but I love their delicious pasta! We go there often for a night out. WALK IN THE PARK Both Park Schothorst and Henschotermeer are beautiful places! I love to take a walk in the park after a long and hectic day. And the lake is perfect on a sunny day. time, but I realised that being a tourist is completely different from actually living somewhere. I loved the UK and developed some expectations based on my experiences there. I was not well prepared coming to the Netherlands As a result, I wasn’t aware of the cultural differences and didn’t know about certain things.’

STUBBORN ENOUGH TO STAY ‘Why I didn’t leave after all this? I was stubborn enough to stay. I learned from the first experiences and developed my own ways to get adjusted to my environment. I started my own business. When that worked out, I started to like it here. Because that’s how it works: when things are working out, you start to like them. This is also the reason I started joining clubs and groups that help expats, such as the UR Glocal club. I enjoy helping others deal with their expectations and share my experience.’

GET NOTICED Jaimala runs Shwan Consulting, with which she provides services to small and mid-sized businesses for marketing (content development/marketing strategy building/social media management), IT project management and customer support projects.

1910

The people of Utrecht have always enjoyed a pint. The De Krans brewery, founded in 1840 on Nieuwekade, was the first Utrecht brewery not located on Oudegracht. In 1888, De Krans brewery took over De Kroes brewery, and around 1900, the entire production was moved to Croeselaan, close to where Utrecht Centraal Station now is. In the early twentieth century, De Krans beer was a popular beverage throughout the Netherlands. But the golden era came to an end: in 1930, the brewery was sold. Eight years later, the entire concern was demolished to make way for Graadt van Roggenweg. > In collaboration with Het Utrechts Archief. WITH MUSICAL CROSS POLLINATIONS, THE FLAMENCO BIËNNALE NEDERLAND GUARANTEES THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PROJECTS FROM THE ENCHANTING MELTING POT CALLED FLAMENCO. UNFORTUNATELY, THE FESTIVAL COULD NOT TAKE PLACE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR DUE TO CORONA. IN THE AUTUMN OF 2021, IT PRESENTS A FEW SPECIAL FESTIVAL PRODUCTIONS IN VARIOUS CITIES IN THE NETHERLANDS UNDER THE NAME FLAMENCO BIËNNALE 2021 PART 2.

On Sunday 7 November, Rocío Molino will perform Al Fondo Riela in the Douwe Egbertszaal of Stadsschouwburg Utrecht. With ‘La Molina’ a new era has dawned in flamenco dance. In a very personal way, Rocío Molina strips flamenco of its routines and corsets. ‘As soon as she takes the stage, she turns it into a garden of flamenco poetry’, wrote a Spanish newspaper. Rocío Molina likes to interfere. In doing so, she likes to sacrifice the sacred cows of tradition. In her latest performance Al Fondo Riela, she moves in an intimate alliance with her guitarists, at the intersection of tradition and experiment. With phenomenal rhythmic precision and full of poetic imagination, she radically and grandly stretches the boundaries of the genre. Al Fondo Riela (which can be translated as Sparkling in the Depths) is the second part of a guitar trilogy in which ‘La Molina’,

Next time? IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR THE PERFECT BASE FOR A WEEKEND IN UTRECHT, YOU SHOULD HEAD TO THE BOUTIQUE HOTEL CITY CENTER LODGE, RIGHT ON THE EDGE OF THE OLD CITY CENTRE. IT HAS VIEWS OF THE CANAL, THE GREEN OF THE PARK ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WATER AND THE STATELY HOUSES ON LUCASBOLWERK.

PEACEFUL

CITY CENTER LODGE Before it became a hotel, the building on Wittevrouwensingel, which dates back to 1878, was a tyre factory. Instead of tyres, the hotel now offers 22 different-sized rooms: from a room with a view of the Dom Tower, to huge luxurious suites. An interesting detail:

none of the rooms look alike. Oh, and did we mention that as well as being pretty, this spot is wonderfully peaceful? > Wittevrouwensingel 37 citycenterlodgeutrecht.nl
