MAG Utrecht — Mar/Apr 2022

Spring is in the air, so it’s time to head out. Trees are blossoming, birds are singing and flowers are carefully emerging in parks, gardens and balconies. These trees and flowers are important for the struggling bee populations. Utrecht is doing its best to provide them with safe places, such as bus shelters with sedum roofs and the huge bee hotel with flower meadows along the A2 motorway. And you can also do your bit in creating a bee-friendly environment. Another interesting fact is that the former frontier of the immense empire of The Romans, known as the limes (limits), once ran through the middle of Utrecht. To make these limes as tangible as possible, we’ve listed the reconstructions, excavations and museum treasures that you can visit. And when it comes to cultural events, there are plenty of intimate theatre performances, great gigs and interesting exhibitions to put on your must-visit list. Enjoy!

Blotevoetenpad

Did you know that there’s a winding footpath through the garden behind the main building of Griftsteede city farm? It’s called the blotevoetenpad (bare foot path), so take off your shoes and socks, let the mud ooze between your toes and feel the fresh grass tickling your foot soles. There’s also an exhibition by wildlife photographer Pim Schuitema inside. Living in a busy city, it’s easy to forget how many special animals live in the Netherlands and how close by they are. BEE POPULATIONS HAVE BEEN STRUGGLING FOR SOME TIME, WITH VARIOUS GENERA DYING OUT ACROSS THE WORLD. THIS IS BAD NEWS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT. UTRECHT IS DOING ITS BEST TO PROVIDE SAFE PLACES FOR THESE USEFUL CREATURES, SO WHY DON’T YOU BEFRIEND THE BEES YOURSELF? By Nynke van Spiegel

A

ccording to the myth, the bee was given its sting by Zeus. First of all, he gave the queen bee her colony of workers to help her search for pollen to make honey. When she asked him for a weapon to ward off animals that wanted to steal her honey, the King of the Gods endowed her with a sting. On realising that she did not intend to share her honey with him either, Zeus exploded with rage. He tweaked the sting so that she could only use it once, and then she would die. So although bees are careful about using their sting, some people are still nervous about them. It’s such a pity because man and bee can actually live in perfect harmony. In fact, this insect is very important in terms of urban vegetation. Utrecht is trying to attract more bees to the city and in 2020, it was crowned the most bee-friendly municipality in the Netherlands.

MAG-Utrecht#34_Spotlight.indd 11

GREEN BUS SHELTERS

Several high-profile projects helped Utrecht to win this title, explains Anne Nijs, nature & ecology advisor to the municipality. ‘They include the bus shelters with sedum roofs and the huge bee hotel with flower meadows along the A2 motorway. We implement an ecological mowing strategy, so that verges are tended in a way that encourages biodiversity for insects. Mowing later, for example, allows the plants to flower and disperse their seeds. This is important for bees, but also for butterflies, birds and hedgehogs.’ As a result of this strategy, Utrecht is now home to 127 of the 350 genera of bees living in the Netherlands.

OPPORTUNISTS

When you mention bees, most people think of the honey bee. These bees live in colonies of up to 30,000 in large wooden hives and produce the honey that you drizzle onto your muesli in the mornings. But there also are bumble-bees and wild bees, such as Adrena, Lasioglossum, mason bees and carpenter bees. Rob Welschen teaches about bee genera in the Faculty of Biology at Utrecht University. He is himself a bee-keeper in the Botanical Gardens on Utrecht Science Park. ‘We humans have started keeping honey bees as pets,’ he

SPOTLIGHT

explains. ‘Thanks to crossbreeding and cultivation, the genus now stings less and is more resilient to disease.’ But there are very dense populations of honey bees in certain areas, and they compete with the wild bees. Rob: ‘If an enthusiastic bee keeper decides to set up ten hives and colonies, the wild bees have to compete for food. As they tend to be loners, foraging for food in the same gardens or neighbourhoods as the honey bees, they often lose out and go hungry. Honey bees on the other hand have hives stocked with sugar and can have a snack before they venture out on a threekilometre flight. And honey

bees are opportunists: if something is flowering, huge numbers from the colony will go there to feed. This makes it twice as hard for the wild bees: they have to act alone, they are smaller and it is more difficult for them to keep their energy levels topped up.’

URBAN HONEY

Compared with rural green fields, the city is an oasis for honey bees, says bee keeper Remco de Jong. He keeps his 10-100,000 bees in six hives on the Eilandsteede urban farm. They mainly feed on tree blossom, which ‘is never in short supply in Utrecht’, he says. ‘In this respect, my bees aren’t really competing with the wild bees. There are so many trees that produce pollen and nectar in the city, including the lime, acacia and chestnut.’ The insects use the nectar to make Utrecht Urban Honey. Remco: ‘In 2020, my bees produced some 130 kilos of honey.’

ATTRACTING INSECTS

People in the know say that the recent drastic decline in the bee population is disastrous. Rob Welschen: ‘Wild bees are vital to biodiversity because they ensure the survival of tiny native plants, like wild campanula. The lack of bees means that these vulnerable wild plants are no longer being pollinated and are becoming extinct worldwide. This has implications for the entire fauna chain. Insects are disappearing on a massive scale. And all creatures, even ants, have a part to play in nature.’ The municipality monitors the bee-friendliness of the city regularly. Anne

‘BEES THRIVE ON CHAOS. UNKEMPT CORNERS OF THE GARDEN ARE GREAT PLACES FOR THEM TO SHELTER AND SURVIVE’ Nijs: ‘We realised that the sedum roofs on the bus shelters weren’t attracting enough insects. So we’re adding some other plants. We also noticed last year that many different genera of bees were nesting in a sand bank in the Lunetten neighbourhood. Eighty percent of wild bees make holes in the ground, so we’re going to create a special place for them in the city with sand and hills.’

CREATE CHAOS

If you’d like to create a bee-friendly environment, Rob Welschen has this tip: ‘Bees thrive on chaos. Unkempt corners of the garden are great places for them to shelter and survive. Choose a spot in the garden and let it overgrow. Don’t deadhead or

MAG-Utrecht#34_Spotlight.indd 13

13

prune the plants when they die, just leave the stalks and leaves. And if you see a bee crawling out of your wooden table, don’t fill the hole. This is where the bee will hibernate. But most importantly, don’t use chemicals in the garden to clean your path or get rid of insects.’ Anne has a few tips too: ‘Remember to grow some flowering plants on your balcony or in the garden in early spring and late autumn. Grow something up against the wall or put plant pots in front of the house, and manage the area around the trees in the street with your neighbours to ensure lots of flowering plants that attract insects.’

Marjon Moed is a maker in the broadest sense of the word. You may recognise her name from the theatre productions, documentary series and creative concepts that she creates to make society just that little bit nicer. She bases her themes on her own life, but they apply equally to countless other people. She developed projects called ‘Alone is okay’ and ‘Holy Shit’, for example, and is now planning a project entitled ‘I have a housing complex’ featuring the housing market. While writing this piece, the maker is in danger of losing her house. ‘I feel committed to the city and vice versa: all the notices about my work describe me as an ‘Utrecht-based maker’. Unfortunately, this isn’t reflected in my search for somewhere to live. There aren’t many affordable places for creative spirits. I really hope that I’ll be able to make this present series from inside Utrecht. It’s such a great place to live.’ It would also be practical for her to live in the city where she hopes to open a pop-up restaurant. ‘Although 51.7% of the population of Utrecht live alone, it’s still not considered normal to eat out on your own. I want to create somewhere where you can dine alone: ‘tables for one’ where you can treat yourself to a meal out without having to find a partner.’ But before this promising pop-up restaurant opens its doors, you’ll have to make do with Marjon Moed’s other tips.

A friend of mine goes there to read the papers every Saturday. In the same vein, Willem Slok is great too, whether you go alone or with someone.’

The baliekluiver ‘Since the first lockdown, my friend and I have walked around the canal together every Monday morning. We always say hello to the baliekluiver as we pass him on Oudegracht. It is a sculpture of a man, hanging over the railing of the bridge. He’s looking out across the water for his next job. Very representative of our time!’

Next to nothing ‘During our Monday morning walk, we stop off at De Zaak. They do a great breakfast. You can get a cup of coffee, a croissant and a glass of fresh orange juice for next to nothing. The perfect way to start the week.’

Second-hand shirts ‘KILOKILO is one of the most benevolent shops in town. If I’m right, you pay €25 per kilo for good vintage clothes. An experienced second-hand shopper can find some real bargains here. I once bought a whole basket full of fantastic shirts there.’

All of the dishes are made from their own ingredients and if they need something else, they source it locally. BODIES RAVE, COLLIDE, ENTWINE AND LIFT EACH OTHER UP

ALIENATING

THE PANTHER This thrilling danse noir about the vulnerable individual in a technologydominated society by choreographer Dunja Jocic is considered one of the best dance performances of this year in the Netherlands. It tells the story of a man who gets caught up in a mysterious ultramodern apartment that eventually develops a will of its own, becoming a threat to the man living in it. Desperately trying to escape this almost imperceptible sensation of alienation, the man starts to feel like a caged panther in his own house.

Seven young dancers meet in a last-ditch effort to break free from the world around them; a compelling society that always asks for more. Despite their differences, they crave contact however fleeting or temporary. In this physical performance, bodies rave, collide, entwine and lift each other up until one elated crowd remains that only has one fear: facing the next morning. > 9 April, Stadsschouwburg Utrecht stadsschouwburg-utrecht.nl

CULTURE

This first Dutch solo exhibition organised by the DISNOVATION. ORG collective suggests an alternative mindset to fossil fuels, based on solar energy. The Life Support System installation, for example, consists of a square metre of wheat which was grown in a closed system. Natural elements such as water, light, heat and nutrients were imported, measured, monitored and put on display. It forms a shocking picture of our dependence on the raw materials that we assume to be free and readily available. But even this system has its limits.

Radio journalist Johnny (Joaquin Phoenix) is leading a pretty carefree life, until his sister Viv asks him to babysit her 9-yearold son Jesse while she’s taking care of their father. When Johnny takes his nephew on a road trip from Los Angeles to New York and New Orleans, he emerges as a true surrogate father, with all the fear and wonder that comes with fatherhood.

NICE AND SOFT

SCHAAP ZACHT What goes on behind a sheep’s tranquil appearance? Are they really as tame as they look? What is hidden beneath their thick woollen blanket? And what does the wool feel like? The soft wool of a sheep forms the inspiration for this visual dance production for children from 18 months to five years.

Tim and Willie are carpenters. They are always building and rebuilding. Their world is never finished - it could always be better, prettier, different. Tim can’t stop hammering but Willie wants to protect their household items. As exhaustion creeps in, dream and reality gradually start to merge. For children between 2 and 6.

Sanne spent too long working herself to the limit, and eventually suffered a burn-out. One of the few things that she felt happy doing was cooking and baking. In her plant-based bakery Loaf, she uses sourdough to leaven her bread - a lengthy process that requires careful attention. Sanne also uses local and/or organic ingredients wherever she can. TIME TO RISE

BAKKERIJ AMADEUS It’s tough in the world of opera at the moment, so opera singer Maurice decided to switch to the trusty profession of baker instead and opened his traditional Bakkerij Amadeus in the beautiful old Metaal Kathedraal in Leidsche Rijn. It’s a typical, old-fashioned bakery, like the ones you find in France and Italy - a place where everything is made by hand and the dough is given plenty of time to rise. The name Amadeus is a reference to the famous composer and an ode to Maurice’s former profession. > Rijksstraatweg 20 bakkerijamadeus.nl

Bammetje bakery and lunchroom has been a culinary proving ground for bread for several years. The bread baked by Ulrika tastes of ingredients sourced from all around the world. Leaving the dough to rise for longer than usual allows the optimum flavour to develop. Apart from bread, Ulrika bakes flans and sweet and savoury snacks, stocks local products and gives workshops. > Hooghiemstraplein 51 bammetjebakery.nl

DE BAKKERT Nils has been fascinated by flavours, food and nature all his life. De Bakkert is the place where he combines these three ingredients. He started on a small scale by baking for his neighbours, before doing an internship at a sourdough bakery in Utrecht and finally opening his own bakery in the former police station in Bilthoven. No two days are the same for Nils. To his mind, it’s all about listening to your dough. Tiny differences in temperature and humidity can have a huge impact. > Leyenseweg 38, Bilthoven debakkert.nl

Where was the border of the Roman Empire? The entire border ran from the North of England to the Black Sea. In the Netherlands, the limes were made up of twenty fortresses on the south bank of the Rhine, linked by a road. At the time, the Rhine was 100 metres wide and flowed through the middle of Utrecht.

How did the Romans guard their frontier? They had watchtowers, fortresses and army bases. They also built roads, canals and ports. As a result, villages evolved, which housed the craftsmen, merchants and soldiers’ families.

In A REAL ROMAN Museum DOMunder, underneath FORTRESS Domplein, you can descend into the remains of Castellum Traiectum, which formed part of the limes.

Where can I see one of these fortresses? Most of the Roman edifices were destroyed or buried beneath the ground, but a few have been reconstructed. They include Fort Fectio, or Fort bij Vechten, a

The Rhine? In Utrecht? Where did it go? The Rhine used to be a lot further north than it is now. It has gradually moved southwards. In days gone by, the Rhine flowed from Arnhem via Utrecht to Katwijk. The Kromme Rijn, which now flows from Wijk bij Duurstede to the city of Utrecht, is a remnant of the once powerful Rhine that dominated the Province of Utrecht.

So what exactly is Castellum Hoge Woerd? The Castellum in Leidsche Rijn was literally built on the remains of the Roman Fort Fletio. You could say it’s a new fort development, with a theatre, restaurant, petting farm, museum and ArcheoHotspot. It gives you an impression of how big a Roman fortress

Everything about (and inside) this 25-metre wooden ship was perfectly preserved in the moisture of the soil. The museum has a vast collection of other items, including furniture, tools, weapons and jewellery.

And there’s a scavenger hunt for children, taking them past the most exciting exhibits. What was the ship used for? De Meern 1 sailed the inland waterways, and was used for trade and transport. The Rhine was an important route for supplies to the Roman fortresses on the limes. These days, a replica of De Meern 1 sails through the canals of Utrecht, treating passengers to a voyage through the Roman history of the city. Where else can I see Roman reliquiae? Is archaeological research into the limes still being carried out? Yes, there are still a lot of Roman remains beneath the soil of Utrecht. Archaeologist Alexander van de Bunt, alias the ‘Shard Doctor’, publishes monthly updates about finds such as jewellery, coins, tools and cooking utensils. You can read his stories on utrechtaltijd.nl. I think I recently found an ancient shard. If you want to know more, take it to the ArcheoLab in the museum at Castellum Hoge Woerd and ask one of the archaeologists to shed some light on it. FROM CHINA LOOKING FOR THE BEST PLACE TO STUDY, YUUKO XUE FROM CHINA MOVED TO WAGENINGEN FIVE YEARS AGO TO PURSUE HER MASTERS DEGREES. SHE FELL IN LOVE WITH THE DIVERSITY AND PRACTICALITY OF THE NETHERLANDS. THE HEART OF UTRECHT HAS BEEN YUUKO’S HOME FOR TWO YEARS NOW. SHE TELLS US HOW IT’S POSSIBLE TO FEEL AT PEACE IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSTLING CITY. By Anita Nánási

‘I come from a small place - 2 million inhabitants only - close to Beijing. I like smaller places, maybe because I’m from one, and going to Beijing was always overwhelming. Though Wageningen is a very good town for studying and student life, it was too small after two years. Even for me. That’s why I moved to Utrecht.’

FISH, BREEDING AND COMPUTER SCIENCE ‘I’m in the second year of my PhD in Wageningen. As most of the topics in Wageningen University, my research is also animal related. My study combines computer vision with breeding. Fish are usually handled in big farms in different European countries - where I get to go from time to time - and my work mainly

MAG-Utrecht#34_NEW_LOCAL.indd 44

consists of image analysis. The main idea is that the camera, which enables you to see the fish under the water and look at the way they swim around, provides you with lots of information. My job is to establish how they look, based on what’s inside them. If the fish are healthy, they have more potential in breeding.’

HEALTHY WORK-LIFE BALANCE ‘I didn’t really have a ‘wow-moment’ when I arrived. The biggest difference for people with an Asian cultural background would be that the Dutch are very direct. I experienced that first-hand because my partner is Dutch. Sometimes, daily communication escalates quickly because he speaks his mind and I had to get used to that. But when you do, it’s a very nice way of communicating. People don’t

have to hide anything and can take general comments very well, not making anything personal. I enjoy that because this is how you establish real connections and efficient communication. This also helps create a healthy work-life balance, because generally the supervisors and bosses understand that things can be difficult in your personal life and you don’t have to hide it.’

BLENDING IN ‘If you frequently go to the same places in a city, same bakery, same hobby store, same supermarket, you naturally start blending in. What I really like is that I can have a normal life while living in the middle of the city. There are practical stores everywhere, so you don’t have to live like a tourist in between weed stores, doughnut cafes and souvenir shops. I have a bakery close by, a proper supermarket, a paper store - which supplies my hobby, as I’m doing origami -, and there’s a yarn store - for my partner who does crochet -, so it’s very handy. What I really like about Utrecht is that you can enjoy its history by walking around while living a normal life.’ I enjoy cities being diverse, with a lot of culture without expanding too much. And all the major cities are like this in the Netherlands.

MAG-Utrecht#34_NEW_LOCAL.indd 45

CUTE PLACE Tijm has super tasty cheesecake and decent coffee. For no particular reason, I always end up coming here with my friends. POP UP SHOPS I like the randomness of the various little shops that pop up on Oudegracht shopping street from time to time. Keep an eye out for them! TASTY CAKES AND PASTRIES The cakes and pastries at Bond en Smolders are very tasty. There’s always a long line on Saturdays of people picking up food for the weekend or having a brunch.

For many years, the majestic white building on Mariaplaats (left in the photo) was an impervious bastion that passers-by could peer into, trying to imagine what it looked like on the inside. But this is about to change. The building served as a gentlemen’s club called De Vereeniging for 150 years. It was a place where men came to discuss global politics with a cigar in one hand and a glass of jenever in the other. Wakatt Dance as a form of social engagement

Serge Aimé’s work is rooted in African culture and is about the world we live in. For example, he investigated a popular uprising in Nuit Blanche à Ouagadougou, and in Kalakuta Republik he looked at what the individual can contribute to a better world. In Wakatt, he once again casts his sensitive gaze on today’s harsh reality. He explores the dynamics of fear and manipulation, but also looks for desire and beauty. In a time of walls, isolation and removal, he advocates the encounter. We only get out of the crisis if we look out for each other. The contribution of musician Malik Mezzadri is important in both the
