This year, Utrecht is celebrating its 900th anniversary as a city. But that’s not all: the opening ceremony for the Singel (the city’s canal), which was cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, is finally taking place. Combine the two and you get one big party along and on the Singel. It’s all happening on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 September, so make sure you don’t miss it!

September also marks the start of the brand-new cultural season, so you can choose from lots of cultural events to visit. What about checking out the latest work by Dutch film makers at the Netherlands Film Festival, or visiting book talks with international authors during the International Literature Festival? Curious people can head over to Betweter Festival, with its mix of talks by scientists, music, film, interactive installations and live scientific research, or listen to some new music during the Gaudeamus music festival. Enjoy!

THIGH SLAPPERS Utrecht Laughs

Although the 32-hectare nature reserve Rijnauwen is a popular area for ramblers, they rarely get the chance to visit the fort there. Good news: in September you’ll be able to spend an evening behind the normally locked fences. From 1 to 25 September, the travelling pop-up restaurant will take you on a voyage of discovery through the ancient buildings, after which you’ll dine in one of the historical vaults.

Every Wednesday evening, experienced and novice stand-up comedians clamber onto the stage at Hofman Utrecht to share their best jokes and most amusing stories. They perform in English every other week, so it’s a perfect evening out for those who don’t understand Dutch (yet!) You can reserve tickets online tix4all.nl/ticketshop/viahofman-utrecht.

A café-restaurant and lowthreshold podium for novice and established artists: ’t Oude Pothuys on Oudegracht has been a breeding ground and hangout in one since 1981. It’s been frequented by countless musicians, listening, drinking and eating before and after they played. The tables they sat at bear their names. But why is it called ‘t Oude Pothuys? There used to be a well in front of the house, which was later used to store pots and pans. So ‘Puthuys’ (well house) became ‘Pothuys’ (pot house).

ANDPLAYGROUNDSDANCEPARTIES

The best of americana, blues, roots, alt-country and other related music styles take centre stage during the eighth edition of Ramblin’ Roots festival. One of the musicians that will take to the stage is English singer Elles Bailey, who contracted severe pneumonia as a child. She was left with a slightly hoarse voice, which actually fits perfectly with blues, rock and soul. Other confirmed are Canadian country musician Tenile Townes, French singer songwriter Baptiste W. Hamon, roots collective The Hello Darlins and many others.

50 years of Theater Kikker

You might just come across one of them somewhere in the city: ‘playgrounds’ created by Theater Kikker in honour of their 50th anniversary. The playgrounds are in public spaces dotted around the city, and there’s plenty to see and do: from pop-up performances to installations. If you fancy a good old-fashioned dance party, come to KlupKikker on Saturday 8 October. Get blown away by acts by Connor Schumacher and DOX, and enjoy the sounds of the global disco, house and more by the Disko Disco DJs. And if you’re still feeling fired up at 4 a.m., move on to MellowKikker and watch the sun rise.

The bar used to be in Zuilen, until the building went up in flames in early 2021.

‘I was in shock for the first couple of days. But at the end of the day, you have to pull yourself together. We got so much support: from local, national and international off-licences, to a friend of my youngest child, who donated €5 from his piggy bank. After the fire, the council decided that Oproer was an important municipal asset, and we realised that people missed us. The plans for this branch in Overvecht were already underway. The idea was to liven up the area a bit. So although the building is newer, we’ve given it an ‘alternative’ vibe, but with heating instead of blankets like in Zuilen. Ha ha! We wanted to attract a mixed group of drinkers by providing pub quizzes, films and games nights. This seems to be working. Our customers need to feel as if they can pop in anytime for a whole evening or a quick pint.’

WITH MARK STROOKER By Wieneke van Koppen I n March, a huge new beer bar opened in Overvecht: Oproer Brouwerij . Their selection of home brews and snacks changes regularly, but they’re all plantbased, some even gluten-free. Co-owner Mark Strooker explains: ‘ We aren’t just doing our bit for the plant-based revolution; we’re going all out. And we’re here for everyone . For example, we discovered that we could brew good gluten-free beer, so now we’ve got four different ones on the menu. People come here specially for it! If you’re okay with any beer, we can give you personal tips, but Blonde Enigma is a great all-rounder. It’s a non-sweet pale beer that even non-beerdrinkers seem to like. We’re also famous for our IPAs. And then there’s our beer tasting tray - that comes highly recommended! Beer is just great: you can do so much with the flavour. But people who don’t drink beer are also welcome. We have coffee from The Village, wine and soft drinks. Our aim is to be a meeting place for local residents, including children (with their parents obviously). We’ve got a play area so that parents can enjoy a drink without having to balance a child on their lap. The place is full of nooks and crannies actually, which is nice for grown-ups too.’

Q&A

‘I love all the local Utrecht breweries, but if I had to choose one, it would be De Kromme Haring . It has a unique vibe and good, wild ales. These ales are brewed with yeast from the Belgian Zenne valley. This yeast makes the beer a bit funky. De Kromme Haring (and our brewery) brew this beer in old barrels to allow the flavours and aromas to mature. If you pay them a visit, you must try their latest wild ale. It’s always one of a kind!’

Funky ale

Fruity or serious ‘De Bierverteller beer shop is founded by a real beer buff. You’ll find special beers from all around the world, as well as local brews. There’s a special range of fruity beers, or a selection of heavier, more serious ales if that’s what you’re into.’

Retro vibe ‘ Koffie Leute café has a great retro vibe. It’s full of old consoles and lamps, stuff from the sixties, seventies, eighties and nineties. It’s a bit like my house actually, with lots of green, yellow and orange. And they play my kind of music, both indie and electronic. The coffee is great, but I come for the whole scene. They’ve even got a record store.’

Something di erent

Magical spot ‘I live in Zeist, just around the corner from acres of natural beauty: from polders, rivers and lakes, to forests, heathland and sand dunes. Take Heidestein at Driebergen, for example. If you go for a walk there, you start off in woodland with a semi-walled, man-made lake. If you carry on walking, you get to some heathland with a pond where you can take a sneaky dip. It’s just a magical spot!’

‘I love alternative places, and De Nijverheid has something special. It’s a hotspot for artists and people who want to do their own thing and make a difference to the world. They try to bring Utrecht to life by organising exciting, cultural programmes. I particularly enjoy their musical events; they always have something that little bit different.’

question: what does it mean to be yourself? Maya: ‘Sharing stories and discovering what touches our hearts helps us to connect and bond with each other.’

DURING GAUDEAMUS, THE MUSIC FESTIVAL FOR BUDDING MUSICAL PIONEERS, THE UTRECHT-BASED CELLIST MAYA FRIDMAN WILL PLAY THE SEMI-THEATRICAL PERFORMANCE THE MYTH OF MEDUSA . IT TELLS THE STORY OF A GREEK PRIESTESS WHO, AFTER BEING RAPED, TURNS INTO A MONSTROUS BEING. THE AIM OF THIS PIECE IS TO GENERATE MORE UNDERSTANDING FOR THE NIGHTMARE THAT VICTIMS OF SEXUAL ABUSE GO THROUGH.

Photography HeinstBrendon

The Myth of Medusa is about a woman who is raped. An intense, but all too topical subject. Why did you want to perform it? ‘I’m a huge fan of the composer Saskia Venegas, who wrote this piece. Her musical language is powerful yet serene, and her work encompasses both music and theatre. The performer must get under the skin of the character that Saskia creates, and this is right up my street. In the story of Medusa, the transformationundergoescharacteraprofoundaftera traumatic, painful experience: rape. You have to make the audience feel what she’s going through. I love the lifeforce in the music, which starts with electronic accompaniments, followed by my cello and vocals. Medusa’s meditative prayers are cut short and replaced by extreme fear, as the music becomes more intense. At the end of the story she transcends her own death and becomes a goddess. This is a metaphor for F rom Shostakovich to Vivaldi and Wagner: Maya Fridman has been enchanted by classical music since she was a child. She started improvising on the piano at the age of four and began cello lessons at six. She and her mother regularly attended opera and ballet performances and jazz concerts. When Maya was twenty years old, she moved from Russia to Amsterdam to study at the Amsterdam Conservatorium. She graduated with a distinction for cello and in 2013, she won the Grote Prijs van Nederland as best Maya:musician.‘Thecello feels like an extension of my thoughts and emotions. I love the creative freedom that this instrument gives me.’ Her career got off to a flying start. She appeared at the Cello Biennale Amsterdam, went on tour with guitarist Harry Sacksioni and released ten albums and three EP’s under the Utrecht TRPTK label, of which she is co-founder. She describes her music as ‘adventurous and often totally improvised’. She wants it to tell a story, she says, hence Canti d’inizio e fine, which is about the Holocaust, and Me, Peer Gynt, in which she reflects on the ‘THE CELLO FEELS LIKE AN EXTENSION OF MY THOUGHTS AND EMOTIONS’

‘I feel sympathy for Russia and Ukraine. I was born in Moscow, and I am part Jewish and Ukrainian. It’s important to Gaudeamus Festival

What are your plans for the forthcoming period? ‘I’m busy organising more fundraising concerts; the next series is in autumn. And I’ve spent the past three years working closely with the prominent Russian composer Alexander Knaifel on a piece for the Cello Biennale Amsterdam on 21 October. It’s going to be a multimedia ritual performance, featuring an installation by the artist Noam Ben-Jacov and a lighting design by James Murray. A few days later, I’ll be releasing my latest album. My dream is to keep making more music, here and abroad, and to work with the cellist Maya Beiser and artist Marina Abramović. Ultimately, I’d like to organise my own festival in TivoliVredenburg, the place where I feel at home. But for now, I just hope that I can see my parents, who live in Russia, again very soon and that the war in Ukraine will end.’

The première of a film about Maya’s fundraising concerts will be screened on 20 September: UNITED WE STAND. Musicians in times of war. mayafridman.com regaining your inner strength. I hope that visitors get the same inspiration from the story and music as I do.’ Is it a #MeToo story? ‘No, I think it’s broader than that. The piece stands for different types of tragedy, wrongdoing and abuse between people. Whether at home or in a war situation. This sounds dreadful, but you can only really understand how someone is suffering if you have been through a trauma yourself. Medusa’s story is an invitation to reflect. It can appeal to almost anyone because the subject – wrongdoing - is universal.

Talking of war: you’re organising benefit concerts for the victims of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Why?

keep generating financial support for Ukraine and to raise awareness of the atrocities that are taking place. People tend to get used to hearing about even the most gruelling situations, but the Ukrainians are in desperate need of our support.’

5×ILFU MATTERS! THIS IS THE MESSAGE BEING RELAYED BY THE INTERNATIONAL LITERATURE FESTIVAL UTRECHT (ILFU), WHICH IS ORGANISING THE ANNUAL LITERATURE FESTIVAL IN UTRECHT, UNESCO CITY OF LITERATURE, IN LATE SEPTEMBER.

On 23 September, the traffic in a street in Utrecht city centre will make way for a stream of 10,000 luminous books. The installation illustrates ILFU’s theme for this year: the fiction behind the facts. The artists’ collective Luzinterruptus hopes that the installation will literally provide more room for fiction in the middle of a city. It is also intended as a silent protest against the effects of traffic and pollution on urban life. Noise and pollution are temporarily replaced by words, poems, whispering pages and soft light. This is also the last day of the writing and residency tour of ten Utrecht-based writers and organisers of Mooie Woorden. Their story for the 900th anniversary of Utrecht (with ‘a city without walls’ as its theme) will be presented along with this work of art.

Every year, ILFU pays special attention to a master from the literary greats. This year, you can watch films that uphold the legacy of American author, poet and civil rights activist Maya Angelou (1928-2014). For example, a documentary about Audre Lorde, Bell Hooks and The Price of the Ticket about the American writer James Baldwin.

Hollie’s mix of modern pop and vintage reggae (which she refers to as tropical pop) conjure up visions of the Jamaican summer of the early 1970s. When she’s on stage, it’s strictly good vibes only.

The American singer Sarah Shook did everything that their mother told them not to, including drinking whisky to drown their sorrows and having numerous pointless one-night stands. But without these life experiences, they couldn’t have written the gritty songs they write about them. And the good news is that this born artist and their amazing band The Disarmers are finally coming to the Netherlands.

Twenty years ago, filmmaker Peter Delpeut and cameraman Stef Tijdink made In Loving Memory, a documentary in which they travelled along the historic railroad line between Leeds and Carlisle. They noticed a touching English tradition: commemorating deceased loved ones with benches. They are located in parks, along the side of the road, overlooking the sea or in the middle of the moors. They asked the people sitting on these benches what they meant to them - short conversations about loss, the importance of memory and the fleetingness of a human life. But these encounters portrayed a constricted England: white, middle class, polite. So now, twenty years later, they decided to travel along the same route again with the benches as a common thread. A lot has happened, so the stories will be different.

In Prince of Muck, Dutch director Cindy Jansen brings a cool, seemingly detached ‘outside eye’ to a classic Scottish scenario, as a Laird surveys his Life and Land.Just as the themes and exact cinematic language in Jansen’s first mid-length documentary film, Auld Lang Syne, reveal complex family ties at play, here too, the carefully constructed narrative gives space to inter-generational tensions, with a slow-burn, dramatic effect.

WITH HIS BRINGSCROCODILE-GRIN,IRRESISTIBLEKNUD‘THESMILEBACKINHORROR’

He starts out as a conversation piece at the parties of his owner, a rich film producer, but when Knud gets to play small roles in B-movies he quickly becomes the king of horror films. With his irresistible crocodile-grin, Knud brings ‘the smile back in horror’. His movies - in which he frequently portrays sexy villains who devour scantily clad ladies - are worldwide hits, and female fans dream of being eaten by him. Knudmania! But his luck changes when he is linked to the disappearances of several young actresses. With one lawsuit after another, Knud’s empire begins to crumble. When a disembodied actress - just a talking head - accuses Knud of having eaten her body (albeit with willing consent), Knud’s smile disappears for good. He plays small parts in quasi-artistic European film flops, tries his luck painting and making a pop album, but eventually comes to a sad enddespised by critics and the public - as a pair of crocodile leather boots at a Sotheby’s auction.

TANGO OR TAP JA! NEE! OLÉ! Somewhere in a tiny grey house, you can hear ‘YES!’ and then ‘NO!’ The lady of the house wants to dance with her husband. Olé! But he just wants to read, so he’s turned her down. This expressive show for children of 3 and above is about a journey made by two people who are very different, but love each other a lot. So will it be ‘YES!’ or ‘NO!’? Or perhaps a bit of both?

This dance performance by dancer and choreographer Lloyd Marengo is a movement from the successful French children’s show A Deux Mains. During a night-time journey to an imaginary country, the characters change into people that only exist in your dreams. Through dance styles such as popping, waving, tutting and robotics, the dancers create a world made up of illusions.

KASPALE’SAFROVIBES

PLAYGROUND

At the tender age of three, Mohamed Yusuf Boss (1986), his mother, brother and three sisters fled their native Somalia. They arrived in the Netherlands, where Mohamed trained as a dancer and choreographer. LÍX, in which he combines hiphop and the traditional Somali dance form Djandheer, is an exploration of his fractured self. What does mean to be one of the first generation of Somalis to grow up in the Netherlands? And what happens when histories converge?

THE FRACTURED SELFLÍX

The Afrovibes festival revolves around theatre, dance, performance, fashion and music from and about Africa. Kaspale’s Playground by performer and artist Syowia Kyambi is one of the performances. Revisiting Kenya’s recent history, Kyambi brings to the fore the many layers of violence that underpinned former President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi’s 24-year rule in Kenya. The work investigates the oppressive nature of a regime in which Kyambi grew up, and which informed her sense of self during her most formative years. 13 and 14 October, Theater Kikker theaterkikker.nl

One of the first reasons that comes to people’s minds to go second hand shopping is to reduce mass production. It’s a fair point. Many of us have things that we may have bought on impulse but don’t use anymorejust think about that cocktail dress or fancy waistcoat that seemed like a good idea at the time for the next party. Besides the fact that thrift shopping reduces overconsumption, has less impact on the environment and is way cheaper, the Dutch kringloopwinkels have a social goal as well: “A kringloopwinkel can offer employment to people with a distance to the labour market or function as a meeting place for local residents” (allekringloopwinkels.nl), which I experience through a smile, lots of enthusiasm and a chit chat every time I find something nice.

The quality of the different shops varies, but my philosophy is that treasure lies everywhere if you are persistent enough to find it. And what can you find in a kringloopwinkel? Literally anything! Some places specialise in clothing, furniture or I  f you are new to the Netherlands and haven’t heard of kringloop winkels yet, let me introduce them: these are the places to go when you want to get rid of your unused items, or when you’re looking for good value items. These places work like charity shops or thrift stores: people can drop off items that are in good condition. After being sorted, lightly repaired, cleaned and priced by the store workers, they will go up for sale. And that’s where the treasure hunt starts!

> Oudegracht 247, 255 and 266 kringloopcentrumutrecht.nl

NO MATTER WHERE YOU LIVE IN UTRECHT, THERE’S DEFINITELY A KRINGLOOP NEARBY. I’M ONLY MENTIONING THE BIGGER ONES.

2 DE WAARDE

They claim to be the nicest kringloop department store on their own website. I can’t really disagree with that, as they have a huge assortment of various things. Clothes, books, toys, kitchenware, furniture, DVDs, sports equipment, yarn, craft supply, garden equipment, electronics or whatever you can imagine. But be careful, time flies once you are inside and your basket probably is too small to hold all the treasures you found.

1 DE ARM OUDEGRACHT

If you’ve ever walked along the Oudegracht you have definitely seen these places. They stock selected items, priced individually. The set up is lovely and fashionable so it’s easy to oversee what’s on offer. There are two shops next to each other and another one on the other side of the water. If you are tired of browsing, you can have a juice or a coffee and sit down for a second in the furniture department of one of the shops.

toys. These are usually specially selected items which makes your chances of finding what you’re looking for way bigger. One time my husband asked me to bring a wine rack, if I happened to fine one. I found so many that I couldn’t choose, and of course for a quarter of the price of a new one. This comes in handy if you just moved to Utrecht and don’t have any furniture or household items and also don’t have an endless budget to spend on your new place. It’s easy to equip your home with nice furniture, cutlery, glassware and even some decorative items for the price of a lunch in a restaurant. My advice? Head out with a treasure hunter’s mind and you will find what you are looking for! I’ll happily list my favourite kringloopwinkels to browse around. See you there and happy shopping!

‘Dutch people are very efficient. Efficiency is good, I like that. But is over-efficiency also good? I think there’s a limit to being efficient in work and in life. Being efficient also means for Dutch people to be straightforward, cut to the chase and save time. And then unexpectedly, you can have a nice conversation at the coffee machine at work, in which they open up about their lives and show some vulnerability. This type of communication is a bit strange to me. Dutch people are welcoming for a chit-chat any time in many random situations and then they will say “bye!” and forget about you. You may still think about the conversation, but for them it was just that moment and that’s it, they move on. Although I did discover that there’s always time for a coffee. When you arrive somewhere you are always offered a coffee, no matter what time of day it is. This means that you can spend five minutes talking to each other about yesterday evening or the weekend. Maybe this is why the Dutch are drinking the most coffee in the world.’

Whatconversationalalevel.wewanttoachieve with SPEAK is for people to feel at home quickly, through events or language courses. It helps if you speak the language a bit. And you may have a coffee, play tennis or even become friends with the people you meet at the language course. There are quite some social organisations in the Netherlands that organise loads of events. That’s a good thing, because new people can benefit from them. Just like the city. If people are more integrated they may be more active. And if you look at it from a capitalist point of view, they may spend a bit more. And if they stay in the city, they may buy a house and get a mortgage. In that way, mobilising people will eventually benefit the city. The feedback we get for SPEAK is that “you guys have a different approach, because you really believe in what you do, and you are really engaged”, so we hope we’ll grow in the future. Ideally, we would like to be a go-to organisation for newcomers.’

EXIT MACBETH BY NOORD NEDERLANDS TONEEL IS AN

52 MAG Utrecht — Sep/Oct 2022 Don’tmissit!

In EXIT Macbeth, the emphasis is on the collaboration between the body of the animal and that of the performer. Who controls who? And is it possible, as humans, to give life to something when we are responsible for destroying and killing it? This results in an interdisciplinary perspective on theater, puppetry and movement and creates a radical and expressive retelling of the original story.

This adaptation of Macbeth is created by German directors Jan-Christophe Gockel and Jana Vetten. It’s a famous trope: the ambitious alpha man who is relentless in his hunger for power. And Shakespeare’s character Macbeth is the archetype of this. However, one aspect of the original play is often overlooked: the constant resistance of nature to continuous human violence. In this adaptation, Gockel and Vetten raise the question: what are you left with if the masculine storylines are taken out and a spotlight is given to nature and animals? And how can we repair our relationship with Michaelthem?Pietsch used stuffed animals to create unique puppets. This will be the first time that he does not control the puppets himself: they are brought to life by dancers and actors from the NITE-ensemble.

No animals were harmed for this performance
