Summer vibes

Photography Jurjen Drenth

Get ready for a sweltering summer! In the next two months, there’s an enormous amount of cultural events to choose from. From live music on the outdoor terraces and in city parks to a travelling theatre festival and an opera spectacle. We’ve also listed some galleries and art spaces where English is no problem to fulfil your art needs. Or head to the COME ALIVE exhibition, which shows the power and versatility of sensuality and pleasure. You don’t even have to leave the city to camp. In July, you can pitch your tent at the Buurtcampings in one of four parks in town. And when the cyclists in the Spanish La Vuelta race are whizzing through the Utrecht landscape, there’s plenty to do, see and eat in the city, as well as in the towns, villages and national parks along the route.

LIGHT & FREE

Utrecht Early Music Festival

With the festival theme Galanterie, the Utrecht Early Music Festival e plores the refinement of eighteenth-century Rococo. This originated in France and spread throughout Europe with its new sense of life: light and free. Artist in residence is the Netherlands Bach Society, that is celebrating its 100th birthday this year and will be present almost every festival day.

DISCOVER THE REGION

De Retourboulevard

Amersfoort has a new circular hotspot: De Retourboulevard is a gathering place for all kinds of circular entrepreneurs. You can buy sustainable, ecological, recycled products, such as sustainable home accessories, vintage collectibles, fair fashion and second-hand CDs, LPs and DVDs. When you’re tired of all this green shopping, spend an hour taking selfies in the first ever Dutch selfie studio, full of optical illusions. Then it’s time for a drink and a bite to eat in the Re5 café and juice bar. De Retourboulevard is open on Tuesday to Saturday, from 10:00 to 18:00, and during Sunday trading. > Brabantsestraat 14, Amersfoort retourboulevard.com

MUST-DO

Hidden behind the facades and front doors in and around the historical city centre, you’ll find the private gardens of Utrecht: green oases of peace and tranquillity with unexpected bursts of garden architecture. From huge to tiny, sober to effervescent: every garden is unique and offers a surprising view of the surrounding buildings. Saturday 2 July is your chance to take a peek inside these special gardens, which remain firmly closed for the rest of the year. The Creative Playground

Did you ever notice the colourful train car next to the big mosque on Westplein, behind Utrecht Centraal station? As the name suggests, The Creative Playground - and Perron West - wants to offer a space for creatives and locals to come together and work on amazing and impactful projects. Besides art, they also focus on sustainability and nature. Angelina, one of the founders, tells me that they aim to create a place where artists can meet up and show their work outside of the ‘white cube’ gallery setting. So if you wish to turn your idea into reality but don’t yet know how, The Creative Playground is the best place to start. Using their social networks and communitybased experience, they can help anyone - not just artists

- to set up a new programme or event for international locals. For this reason, they also host an Artist Residency programme for local and locally-based foreign artists. The Creative Playground’s season is short and intense: their kick-off event, The Oasis Festival, takes place on 9 July. After that, there is plenty to do until the end of October: from an art route event on 10 and 11 September to silent isco an fi lm an open mic nights on Fridays. There are also possibilities to follow various workshops and there s a pluktuin to fulfi l the gardening needs of those missing nature while living in a cement jungle.

Galerie SANAA

As opposed to The Creative Playground, Galerie SANAA does have a classic gallery setting: it’s an airy space with pristinely white walls that showcase colourful works of art. y first visit here left me speechless and hopeful: the opening of the exhibition was in English and the crowd was a mix of art enthusiasts, locals and tourists. With its location between the Dom Tower and Janskerkhof, Galerie SANAA is an ideal place to just walk in and get lost between the paintings

and drawings of international artists. The goal of owner Berthe Schoonheim is to welcome artists from Africa, the Middle-East, Europe and the Netherlands to showcase the differences between these various cultural backgrounds. We all have different histories when we arrive in Utrecht, and that’s

exactly what Galerie SANAA focuses on: telling the stories behind the artists and their artworks. This message is widely spread as the gallery participates in most of Utrecht’s cultural events such as Uitfeest and Culturele Zondagen, and organises multi-language artist talks in English, Arabic and more so everyone can join in. During the summer months, Galerie SANAA will have a stock exhibition, showing you the highlights of the last years, and a new exhibition that presents the work of a new contemporary artist from the African continent. > Jansdam 2 galeriesanaa.nl Open: Wednesday to Saturday from 12:00 to 18:00 or by appointment

y hunt as reatly satisfie when I joined a group of volunteers at BAK in 2019. Language was and still is no problem whatsoever: Dutch people and internationals are always participating in equal amounts during the events they organise. BAK is a melting pot of art, activism and knowledge. Exhibition topics are always swirling around themes like society, freedom and acceptance, and are aiming to start a conversation about these themes. How do we live as a society? How does politics play a role in our daily lives? What impact do we have on each other under various circumstances? How do we treat each other? And how can we be equals?

Because there are so many different perspectives, neither of these questions are easy to answer. This means you have to visit BAK with an open mind and an open heart. And even though the place looks small, it’s wise to have a whole afternoon to be able to fully enjoy and understand the ongoing exhibition. My personal favourite attribute is that they are open until 19:00, so you can even stop by after work! > Pauwstraat 13A bakonline.org Open: Wednesday to Sunday from 13:00 to 19:00

owards the far end of the colourful anaalstraat you ll fin De Voorkamer, where people from diverse cultural backgrounds come together to gain new experiences. Pim van der Mijl and Shay Raviv have been running this meeting place together with team members and volunteers since it was founded in 2016. ‘Before that, we were studying at the Design Academy Eindhoven. In 2013, we visited an asylum seekers’ centre for a research project. I was shocked by the situation there: by the fact that these people, ho have alrea y e a war, have to spend years in an asylum seekers’ centre. Not long afterwards, thousands of Syrian and Eritrean refugees arrived in the Netherlands. At one point, a future asylum seekers’ centre around the corner in in hoven as set on fire. here were protests across the country against the reception of asylum seekers. his as our sign to act. We believe that contact with others is one of the most powerful ways of changing people’s attitudes towards ‘strangers’: you only see their qualities if you actually meet them. It’s not easy to get into or out of an asylum seekers’ centre, so the people living there don’t speak to many Dutch people. De Voorkamer acts as a bridge between people living in the Utrecht asylum seekers’ centre and the locals. We do this by letting them develop their talents on an

You see it in what we do and where we do it: everything is done in co-creation between locals and newcomers, from the programming and the chairs, to the porcelain cups and backgammon boards. The people who go there know that they can rely on having a chat with the staff. You can have a cup of coffee, and they organise cultural activities too. ‘I love outdoor climbing, but it’s not easy to find a mountain to climb in The Netherlands. So I go to the Sterk bouldering hall several times a week, both for the sport and the relaxed vibe. You get to know people here, whether you’re an experienced boulderer or a novice.’

‘If I go shopping after work, Kanaalstraat has everything I could possibly want. I particularly like the Arab speciality shop Bilad al Sham. I’m always coming across new dishes at De Voorkamer, and I can buy most of the ingredients here. They sell delicious tahina, sweet-and-sour gherkins and makdous, tiny aubergines stuffed with walnuts.’

When Sterk was closed during lockdown, my friend and I had to be creative, so we threw ropes into the tallest tress we could find and used the structure of the bark to edge our way upwards. It’s a former ‘brothel boat’ that has been renovated into a microbrewery. They serve home-made beer, soft drinks and spirits. In the traditional way, they only brew their beer to sell in their own bar. The boat is quite small so it’s really cosy for small groups.’

A room full of sensual smells and vibrating bowls that resonate eep insi e your bo y. A film in which dancers celebrate their physical zest for life, an installation solely consistin of fin ers an an in atable room where you can listen to other people s se ual fantasies. ou ll fin all of the above (and more) at COME ALIVE, an exhibition in the Muntgebouw about intimacy and eroticism. The place that used to mint solid coins from metal, is now home to liquid sensuality and fusing human bodies. The curators of COME ALIVE, Ine Gevers and Morgan Catalina, want to show the power and versatility of sensuality and pleasure. Eroticism is best experienced together, they say. It brings people together, while also setting them free. Ine: ‘This is one of the reasons that totalitarian regimes see eroticism as a threat and try to control and suppress the sexual freedom of women and people in the LGBTQ+ community, for example. We see COME ALIVE as ‘pleasure activism’ - a ay of firin up our life force, overcomin prejudices and rediscovering the power of eroticism.’

arouses your senses in one way or another. And they show that sexuality is so much more than what goes on in the bedroom.’ Like what?

‘Take Johan Grimonprez’s video work about tickling. You might wonder what this has to do with eroticism, but the thing about tickling is that it needs trust and unpredictability on the part of the other person. And then Alix Marie’s bare leg curtains, inspired by the sexy French can-can dance, which was actually a way

Eroticism is fine, but also a bit risky in the MeToo era. Does your exhibition take this into consideration?

‘If one thing is clear, it’s that we must change the structural inequality and toxic masculinity that is rife in today’s society. But things will never change if everyone checks out; if sexuality becomes taboo and we avoid the subject wherever possible. In COME ALIVE, we are trying to take a positive approach to sexuality by giving a wide range of artists a platform. They come from very different backgrounds and sometimes contradict each other, but everything they do

for women to liberate and own their bodies. The Japanese shibari bondage by Alice Heron is another good example. It’s not a body she’s tying up, but a car, so she’s eroticising a day-to-day object.’ Are any artists from Utrecht exhibiting?

‘Absolutely. Joyce Overheul, for example. Her work YES is on display at COME ALIVE: three huge golden pillows in the shape of yen, euro and dollar signs. There’s something very exciting about hard currency expressed in soft materials.’ The exhibition comprises a total of 45 works of art, some of which are hands-on, like Alice Stewart’s make-your-own sex toys workshop. Entrenar la Fiesta is a course in contact and group dance, which gradually evolves into an energetic, but fully clothed, orgy. The Army of Love, which advocates a more equal distribution of sensual love, is giving workshops about connection, shame, pleasure and loss. The entire COME ALIVE programme is based on embracing diversity - whether this concerns gender and sexual

For example, the artists Martin and Inge Riebeek visited the Lombok neighbourhood of Utrecht to ask various residents about the role that eroticism plays in their lives. You also have work by Melanie Bonajo, who is currently representing the Netherlands at the Venice Biennale.

‘Yes, we’re delighted about that. She specialises in queer, non-binary, trans and other people, who tend to be side-lined in our society. We’re showing one of her videos about sex workers, and her Skinship team is giving a workshop about the sense of touch and caring kinship.’ The exhibition mentions the term ‘eco-sexuality’. Is that sex with plants?

Laughing: ‘I suppose it is. This term refers to the Earth as a lover, the erotic aspects

Photography Gert Jan van Rooij

Can eroticism ever by funny?

‘Oh yes, particularly if you use your imagination and allow yourself to see the funny side of it. Let’s be honest, things often go wrong and that’s what makes it fun. Oscar Peters’ moving sculpture entitled The Urge is a prime example. It doesn’t always have to be perfect. To our mind, COME ALIVE is an invitation to let your imagination run riot. Pope Adrian VI, ca. 1625, Jan van Scorel

VISIONARY

Did you know that one of the popes came from Utrecht? Adrain VI was chosen as Pope precisely 500 years ago in 1522, much to everyone’s surprise. Keti Koti

Festivals & Events

By Wieneke van Koppen

A BOOK PUBLISHED IN 2021 ENTITLED SLAVERNIJ EN DE STAD UTRECHT SHOWS THAT UTRECHT WAS CLOSELY INVOLVED IN SLAVERY AND THE SLAVE TRADE. THESE PAST LINKS WITH SLAVERY ARE REMEMBERED EVERY YEAR ON 1 JULY DURING THE KETI KOTI CELEBRATIONS. IN THE KOPI SUSU BAR IN THE LOMBOK NEIGHBOURHOOD, LEROY LUCAS, CHAIR OF KETI KOTI UTRECHT, EXPLAINS WHY THIS REMEMBRANCE SERVICE SHOULD BE IMPORTANT TO EVERYONE IN UTRECHT.

T

he Lombok neighbourhood is Lucas’ home base. ‘I live quite close and love to come here. But do you know why it’s called Lombok? Because at the start of the 20th century, every city in the Netherlands needed to remind the Queen of everything that belonged to her kingdom. Take a look around: most Dutch municipalities have an Indonesian neighbourhood with a Javastraat or Bandastraat.’ Sitting on the sunny terrace outside Kopi Susu, Lucas points to the street sign opposite, denoting J.P. Coenstraat. ‘Streets were not just named after colonised countries. This street honours Jan Pieterszoon Coen, a governor-general from the Golden Age. The man is generally considered to be a hero, but not by me. You can’t simply have thousands of Bandanesians beheaded to secure huge financial ain, an then be calle a hero. As far as I’m concerned, the name of the street should be changed to honour the Antillean free om fi hter ula.

ACKNOWLEDGE, LEARN AND CELEBRATE

Until recently, only a limited number of people in Utrecht attended Keti Koti. They were mainly from the Utrecht-based Surinamese community. But since 2018, Lucas and others organise a bigger festival to include more people in Keti Koti. ‘To us, Keti Koti is about acknowledging what happened to our ancestors, learning about history and celebrating freedom. This year is the fifth e ition so our plans are bi er than ever. It’s gonna be amazing.’ On 22 une, for e ample, fine artist ranky un el will open an exhibition in ZIMIHC Zuilen in

honour of women of colour. You can check out this exhibition until … August. And there’s plenty more for non-Dutch speakers: ‘The Sporen van Slavernij walking tour, for example, takes you to places recalling the city’s former links with slavery. You’ll be surprised how obvious it actually is. At Oudegracht 20, you’ll see an ornament showing several people being forced into slavery, and a man exploiting them: a clear picture of the atrocities of that era.’

CULTURE

Slavery was abolished in Suriname and the Antilles on 1 July 1863. Every year on 1 July during Keti Koti, we take a moment to think about where the gold in the Golden Age actually came from, and who mined it, explains Lucas. ‘We acknowledge the suffering of our enslaved ancestors and come together to learn about the dark side of Dutch history. People might be wondering what all this has to do with them. Look at the canals: they’re beautiful, but they came at a price. Slavernij en de stad Utrecht shows that this beauty was paid for with blood money. You can’t celebrate the good and just ignore the bad and the ugly. That’s why we organise Keti Koti and invite everyone in Utrecht to attend.’

27

SHARING MEALS

As in previous years, the official Dutch commemoration will take place in Amsterdam on 1 July. Next year, marking 150 years since slavery was abolished, there will also be a 1 July commemoration in Utrecht. It will be a very special edition, as it also includes the unveiling of the Utrecht slavery monument. ‘Another part of our festival in Utrecht on 1 July, which might interest internationals, is sharing the heri heri meal at Het Huis. This Surinamese meal consists of baked bananas, cassava, fish an s eet potatoes, and was eaten by people forced into slavery. It had to be nourishing to keep them going while they were working. In those days, people shared their food, so that’s what we do too. So don’t forget to try some free heri heri!’

YOU’VE GOT MAIL

From the 19th century onwards, trains were a vital link in the postal service chain. Special trains often ran at night taking letters, postcards and parcels to various destinations throughout the country. Twenty-five years ago, on 16 May 1997, the last Dutch post train reached its final destination. The Railway Museum tells the story of delivering post by train. It has several post trains that you can admire, and they need your help as a forwarding agent to find a lost parcel! > until 27 November, Railway Museum spoorwegmuseum.nl/en

Berlin teenager Nora has always felt invisible. She normally spends her time with her big sister, who is much more exuberant and only cares about her looks, going out with guys and social media. When Nora meets Romy, she finally doesn’t feel invisible anymore. The sky seems bluer and Nora’s body has changed. She feels like a caterpillar ready for her metamorphosis: she finally crawls out of her cocoon to become a beautiful butterfly.

The Island

The Island by the Rumanian animator Anca Damian is a funny, surreal musical with about Robinson Crusoe and refugees from the Mediterranean Sea. In this version, Robinson Crusoe isn’t a desperate drowning man, but someone who spends his days on an uninhabited island of his own free will. One day, Friday washes up, the only survivor from a boat that was trying to reach Italy. He is followed by peopletraffickers, border security guards and mermaids. The result is a mix of Robinson Crusoe, The Little Prince and Monty Python, in which one ridiculous scenario flows effortlessly across the screen into the next. > 4 August, Hoogt on Tour in De Nijverheid hoogt.nl

F

i-ga-ro. They are probably the most famous three notes in opera history. The words are from the opera written in 1816 by the Italian composer Gioacchino Rossini, about the marriage of a hairdresser from Seville. Mozart also based his famous opera le Nozze di Figaro on this tragicomic love story, originally written by the French writer Beaumarchais. But where Mozart ends with the marriage of Figaro and his lover Susanna, Divorce of Figaro continues. A revolution breaks out during the young couple’s wedding in an undisclosed German-speaking country. i aro an usanna ee to a neighbouring country with their employers, the Count and Countess, hoping they will be welcomed with open arms.

METOO

Niek Idelenburg (music) and Joke Hoolboom (libretto and direction) had originally planned the third part of their Mozart trilogy for 2020, but that had to be postponed for two years. A period in which the themes of the show

MAG-Utrecht#36_Culture.indd 35

only became more relevant. Joke: ‘Mozart’s opera was set against the backdrop of the French Revolution. Our version, which in turn is based on Horváth’s 1937 play, takes place in the present. But the social unrest and the tension between politicians and the people are still very tangible. Of course, we were already dealing with a refugee o in , but in li ht of the ar in Ukraine, that theme has unfortunately become even more topical.’ The opera contains even more contemporary topics, such as a MeToo-esque storyline. ‘In Mozart’s era, a landlord was entitled to the first ni ht ith his subor inate s bride’, says Niek. ‘In this case, the Count actually falls in love with usanna, an claims that first ni ht. Something we can’t imagine at all in this day and age.’ Joke: ‘But at the same time we can, because it’s all about power. Their positions are so unequal that it is impossible for Susanna to refuse.’ However, Divorce of Figaro is not a tragedy, says Niek. ‘Mozart’s opera is above all a comedy, and so is our play. For example, the characters speak German, Dutch and English, which often leads to hilarious misunderstandings, especially when the group has crossed the border.’

MODERN TWIST

Musically, the opera is a mixture of ol an current in uences as ell.

THE OPERA CONTAINS CONTEMPORARY TOPICS, SUCH AS A METOO-ESQUE STORYLINE

Theatre

The Count and Countess sing ‘old school’ in the Mozart idiom, but this is interrupted during the revolution by a new sound from Niek. His work is best described as ‘a fusion of neo-baroque and modern classical’, which creates a different atmosphere when the youn i aro an usanna fin themselves in a new world. ‘In my compositions, I’ve mainly searched for different kinds of harmonies, compared to the original Mozart music’, says the composer. ‘We always give our productions a twist anyway; we rarely do an opera ‘just’ as it was originally made. In theatre, people think it’s quite normal to change just about every word in a Shakespeare adaptation, but when you do that in a Mozart opera, it suddenly becomes a very bad thing to do. Whilst I think: some parts just aren’t that good.’ The location also gives the opera that modern twist, as the old Werkspoorkathedraal is no ordinary theatre venue. As a director, Joke loves these kinds of special places. ‘For example, in one of our previous productions, Don Giovanni, a sports car burst onto the scene. This time I also came up with all sorts of fun things, because the space in the Werkspoorkathedraal is enormous; it’s a hundred meters deep.’

SPECTACLE

Joke and Niek emphasise that this show is also super accessible for opera newbies. They do have a tip for visitors who are not yet familiar with the genre, though. Joke: ‘Let yourself be carried away by the music, and don’t dwell too much on things that don’t appeal to you.’ ‘And make sure to read the programme booklet!’, adds Niek. ‘It will take you two minutes, but then you will better understand what the story is about. You can also come to one of our introductions. In addition to the story, I also explain some of the musical motives that you will hear later.’ There will be a total of 37 singers and musicians on stage in Divorce of Figaro: a mix of young and old talent, both Dutch and international, and often scouted by Holland Opera. Niek: ‘We have a great cast with some of the best Dutch singers, as well as people

MAG-Utrecht#36_Culture.indd 37

that have just started their careers. We consider ourselves to be a bit like Ajax, in terms of fin in an trainin talent. e provide them with opportunities that they might not yet have been given at Real Madrid. For example, a very young singer plays the part of Figaro. That’s exciting, and I am sure he can pull it off.’ Despite the social themes, Divorce of Figaro is is a multisensory spectacle, above anything else. And that’s about time, after two years of being silent. Niek and Joke are eager to get started. ‘We look forward to a huge crowd that leaves the venue while singing. It’s all about the community, having enjoyed something together.’ > 10 to 28 August, Werkspoorkathedraal hollandopera.nl/operavoorstelling/ 304/divorce-of-figaro

GOET EN BLOET

In the floodplains of the Nederrijn, on the outskirts of the picturesque village of Amerongen, you’ll find Amerongen Castle. This year, it’s exactly 350 years since the Rampjaar (Disaster Year), when various armies invaded the Netherlands leaving behind a trail of devastation. Amerongen Castle was plundered and burnt to the ground by Louis XIV’s troops. The Goet en Bloet exhibition tells the exciting tale of the influential aristocratic Van Reede family, who owned the castle at the time and risked everything to save the Netherlands from ruin.

On Saturday 20 August, the competitors in La Vuelta will fly across the runway of the former Soesterberg military airbase. While this will be a spectacular thing to witness by itself, you can also discover this special area of nature afterwards: there’s a walk that takes you past ammunition bunkers made from reinforced concrete, hidden between the trees. In the past, they were used to store thousands of kilos of ammunition. At the National Military Museum, you’ll learn about Dutch military history. 1970 Julianapark, one of the oldest urban parks in the Netherlands, is the perfect spot to spend a summer’s day lying in the sun with a good book. The construction of the southern part of the park was commissioned in 1903 by a wealthy family of bankers called Kol. In 1928, the grounds were sold to the municipality of Utrecht, on the condition that it would remain a public park for at least another hundred years. The park was extended to its current size in 1935. > in collaboration with Het Utrechts Archief. Visit them on Hamburgerstraat 38 hetutrechtsarchief.nl/english

THE NON-PRESENT PERFORMER

What if you could

WHAT WOULD IT BE LIKE IF, JUST LIKE A COMPUTER, YOU COULD SWITCH OFF YOUR BODY EVERY NOW AND THEN? NO THOUGHTS, NO STIMULANTS, NO MOVEMENT OR FEELING. THIS IS WHAT THE NON-PRESENT PERFORMER BY KAREL VAN LAERE IS ALL ABOUT. Performer Karel van Laere went on a search in an attempt to find an answer to the aforementioned question. ‘‘The closest to what I was looking for seemed to be anaesthesia or an epidural. So I approached an anaesthetist. My idea to do a live performance under anaesthesia proved to be impossible. However, the anaesthetist did convince me of the power of hypnosis in this context.’’ This results in the use of hypnosis during the performance. Karel’s body is entrusted to a choreographer and three dancers, as they experiment and seek out his physical limitations. The dancers conduct their research on stage with Karel as their subject, as he becomes the non-present performer.
