Happy birthday Utrecht On 2 June 1122, Emperor Hendrik V granted the people of Utrecht town privileges, officially making Utrecht almost the first city to be established in the Netherlands. ‘Our’ anniversary will be celebrated in style with a programme compiled specially for and by the people of Utrecht. All kinds of events will be organised from the beginning of June until the end of November. So make sure to check out utrecht900.nl and pick your favourites. May and June also mark the comeback of the outdoor festivals we all missed so much in the last two years. Grab a drink and a bite to eat while listening to live music at cultural hubs De Havenloods and Hof van Cartesius, or watch a theatre performance by a local artist during the Lepeltje Lepeltje festival in Park Lepelenburg. There’s plenty of choice, so enjoy!

OPEN AIR ART

Railway workers

A lot of murals in Utrecht are named after the street, neighbourhood or place where they are painted. In two sidestreets of Tweede Daalsedijk Meidoornstraat and Goudsbloem straat - you can see murals of old train carriages, painted by the Verfdokter. They refer to the adjacent Werkspoorfabriek, a factory where train carriages were built for the Dutch national railways between 1913 and 1972. In those days, almost three-quarters of the residents of both streets worked in the factory. > Meidoornstraat and Goudsbloemstraat

Bach festival

In May, the Netherlands Bach Society is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a festival weekend. Some of the highlights: on Friday, Adrian Schvarzstein will perform a circus-like show with musicians and audience to one of Bach’s cantates. On Saturday, Shunske Sato will lead the ensemble into an improvised jam battle with violinist Tim Kliphuis and his trio. The line between the genres will fade; after all, Bach is not entirely sacred. On Sunday, the Swiss conductor, organist, composer and improvisor Rudolf Lutz will conjure up a festive finale. > 20, 21 and 22 May, TivoliVredenburg tivolivredenburg.nl/ bachfestival

To give you an idea: during the World Language Walks of Utrecht Ontmoet, Dutch-speaking and non-Dutch speaking people get to know each other and the language better. The exhibition Water! Friend or enemy? in Het Utrechts Archief will tell you how the residents of Utrecht have been using and fighting the water for centuries. Paleis Lofen

On 2 June 1122, Emperor Hendrik V granted the people of Utrecht town privileges from his palace called ‘Lofen’. The palace burnt down in 1253, but the remains are still located in cellars under buildings between Domplein and the Vismarkt. They haven’t been accessible for decades, but that will change soon. The current De Haar castle 4 , built on the site of the original Mediaeval castle, was built in the 20th century. The architect was Pierre Cuypers, who also did drawings for Amsterdam Centraal Station and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. This Catholic master builder admired the splendour of Roman Catholic ecclesiastical architecture and was particularly inspired by the ornate French Gothic cathedrals. You could say that De Haar castle with all its towers and Mediaeval appearance (commissioned by Baron Van Zuylen van Nijevelt) is a little over-thetop. But it has its own fairy tale charm. Crossing this bridge, you’d be forgiven for thinking that it was built from logs and branches. But it’s 100% concrete. Q&A WITH ANNE NIJS By Wieneke van Koppen

Zwarte Water

Be a tr

k

As an urban ecologist, Anne Nijs has made it her mission to bring nature and biodiversity closer to the people of Utrecht. Her most famous project is probably the ‘fish doorbell’, which helps fish to reach their breeding grounds more smoothly. The bell also gives citizens a glimpse of the mysterious underwater world in the canals of Utrecht via a live camera (go to visdeurbel.nl to check it out). Unsuspecting passers-by would be forgiven for thinking that the project is a jolly publicity stunt. But for a lot of fish, this doorbell decides whether or not they can breed. The live camera on the doorbell also enables researchers to study the species of fish in the canals. Like the fish doorbell, the Big 30 of the Municipality of Utrecht is a lighthearted, but very effective campaign, says Nijs. Although you won’t see leopards prowling through the alleyways of Utrecht, there’s definitely a chance of seeing deer, common noctules, kingfishers or crested newts. These animals are monitored via the Big 30 list and protected for the sake of biodiversity. Anne Nijs explains just how important projects like these are. ‘If you show people what’s going on, they feel responsible and motivated to do something for urban nature.’ Nijs tells us about the best places in the city to spot the animals in the Big 30. With a bit of luck, of course.

Ring the doorbell ‘I’m not only suggesting this spot because of the doorbell, but because it’s a lovely location. You can sit here on the duckboard of Het Muzieklokaal or the public steps on the waterside you watch visdeurbel.nl on your phone or whatever, you can see what’s going on underwater too. You never know, you may see an eel swim by, or a grebe fishing or a huge pike.’

Wall plants ‘Zwarte Water near Lauwerecht gets its name from the dark peatiness of the water. You could also assume that it is named after black spleenwort, a rare variety of fern that grows here. The great thing about plants, including these type of ferns, is that they can pop up in other places too.’

Cool spot ‘I like the relaxed atmospehere of the Ping Pong Club. It looks cool outside and in, the old building, the railway line and the derelict land around it. Like all land that’s been left to grow wild, this land is really important to Utrecht. All kinds of flowers grow here and attract wild bees.’

Pigeons beware! ‘Although the skate track on Jaarbeursplein is one of the least natural places you could imagine, you do find nature here. There are newts in the water tank on the square and if

15

you look carefully in the right season, you’ll see the larvae of the emperor dragonfly in there too. And you might even spot a bird of prey. There’s a nesting box for peregrine falcons on top of the town hall. Pigeons beware: they are the fastest bird in the world when they dive, and pigeons are their favourite food.’

Crevice plants ‘Zwaansteeg near Springweg is an oasis of tranquillity and a great place to see some special crevice plants: plants that grow on or between paving stones, or in wall crevices. The deadly nightshade in Jacobsgasthuissteeg is a good example. It’s very poisonous and you really shouldn’t try the berries. It’s also called Belladonna because women used to drop the sap from the plant into their eyes to dilate their pupils and look more beautiful. It can make you really ill, so don’t try this at home!’

Bees and bats ‘Beatrixpark is not only a perfect spot for a picnic, it’s also a perfect place for lots of unusual natural species, in and around the old defence structures of the Hollandse Waterlinie. You’ll find all kinds of wild bees hiding in the open sand of the slopes. And if you come here at dusk, you’ll often see some special species of bats flitting around. If you’re really lucky, you might even see a European polecat.’

The Argentine choreographer and dancer Marina Otero ruined her body with dance. While in hospital being treated for a serious back injury, she asked five male dancers to continue her work. They do everything on stage that she is no longer able to do. Otero directs them, swears at them and loves them, while the men dance out the story of her life.

Everyone is basically sensual, but shame and doubt often affect the way we see our bodies. In this new production by Schweigman&, six dancers go in search of their sensuality. They’re done with taboos and clichés and are prepared to make a statement. Accompanied by drums and percussion by Frank Rosaly and Katherina Bornefeld (The EX).

SHARP CONTRAST

DOUBLE MURDER

CULTURE

The New York Times called the Israeli/ British choreographer Hofesh Shechter ‘one of the British dance scene’s hottest properties’. In the diptych Double Murder, you see his work Clowns, a succession of lanky trudging steps with arms waving around, blood-thirsty murders and festive folklore dances intended as a bitter commentary on the emotional desensitisation to global violence. It is in sharp contrast to his new work, The Fix, which has a more reflective, poetic character. > 17 May, Stadsschouwburg Utrecht stadsschouwburg-utrecht.nl

CONTINUAL SEARCH

CHASING THE BLANK The men from Fractal Collective have joined forces with dancers Aissa Kraayenbrink and Barbara Minacori in their search for the essence of our existence. They embrace each other’s movement language and the contrast between male and female energy. How can Conni and Zino soften their acrobatic movements? And how can Aissa and Barbara match the physical strength of the b-boys without compromising their own strength? BODILY SOUNDS

KIKKER INTRODUCES: GUT GUT is the working title of an artistic production study being conducted by the Dutch-Iranian sociologist and artist Diane Mahín. One question overarches her series of performances: what would the world look like if people were turned inside out, and what would happen if our anatomical insides were in charge of day-to-day life? To answer these questions, the performer amplifies the rumblings of her own guts, rather than those of the audience as she did in previous shows. > 10 and 11 May, Theater Kikker theaterkikker.nl

THE HEALTHY CITY

For many years, Utrecht, the first major Mediaeval city in the Netherlands with clear roots in the Roman and early Mediaeval period, led the way in terms of urban living, architecture and building. After 900 years, leading a healthy life in a city that continues to expand is still high on Utrecht’s social agenda. In this exhibition, it soon becomes clear that the balance between humans and their environment is, was and will always be, a vital aspect of healthy urban living.

GARDENING

EROTICISM AS A LIFE FORCE

COME ALIVE

The coronavirus pandemic caused an existential crisis. Many of us were happy to retreat into our safe cocoons, while what we actually needed was other people to rekindle our life force. In the former melting room of the Mint building, where they used to produce coins, 45 artists use our sense of touch, sight, smell and hearing to help our bodies rediscover their voice. For example, the film Inverso Mundus by the AES + F artists cooperative turns our world upside down, and the artist Eli Joteva spent hours in a state-of-the-art MRI scanner gaining insight into what actually goes on inside our bodies. > from 3 June, Het Nieuwe Muntgebouw come-alive.nl

INSPIRING STORIES

WOMEN WHO BREAK DOWN WALLS

In the 16th century, Spaniards dominated the city from a fortress on. When they left, Utrecht residents feared a new enemy would take up residence there. They wanted the castle demolished, but no one dared to do it. Except for Trijn van Leemput and a group of other women. Armed with pickaxes and hammers, they started demolishing it. Inspired by Trijn, writer and researcher Véronique Konings interviewed ten women from Utrecht who figuratively break down walls in society. > from 1 June, Volksbuurtmuseum volksbuurtmuseum.nl

This is a bit different from gardening in your own garden. Nestling between the trees, ponds and flowers in the beautiful Amelisweerd woods and Oud Amelisweerd country house, you’ll find works of art and sensory experiences designed to show the contrasts and parallels between nature and technology. What happens when you stop focusing on humans, and give nonhumans a voice? GARDENING explores questions like this by using art and design to make the relationship between man and nature tangible. > from June, Amelisweerd gardening.nu creativecodingutrecht.nl

ETERNAL FAME?

Four dancers, a piano, violin and vocals celebrate the short shelf life of eternal fame. Because in the greater scheme of things, we are actually very small and insignificant. Not true! So we turn ourselves into stars. We give speeches, put ourselves on pedestals and reward each other with honours, medals and trophies. We are constantly competing with each other and calling ourselves ‘winners’. INTERNATIONAL UTRECHT

New Local

the

PATRÍCIA ASSIS FROM PORTUGAL

By Anita Nánási

‘I have a huge mission: I’d like to help foreigners and locals to feel at home in Utrecht. The integration process is not only about creating the facilities for someone who is new to the country. Of course, finding a job and a place to live is key to everyone, but that isn’t enough. People need friends, warmth and someone who invites them for a coffee. This gives people the opportunity to express who they really are. My mission is to break down the socialcultural barriers and provide integration that also considers these personal aspects.

Utrecht is very local. It’s easy to get in touch with someone and to keep the conversation going. In the social sphere, everything still pretty much happens in Dutch. While that is a difficulty, all other aspects to guide an organisation are pretty easy because the city and its people are open to new ideas and collaborations.’

MAKING PEOPLE STAY

‘I studied business administration but my heart lies with social impact, personal development and sustainability. I always dreamt of having my own organisation, becoming a social entrepreneur, working with people. When I arrived in the Netherlands, I shared the hostel with people who were looking for asylum. Those stories really touched me and are still with me. After working in business and traveling I started the project SPEAK Utrecht. It’s a platform that connects local people with migrants, newcomers and asylum seekers by organising language groups and cultural events. Our aim is to provide opportunities for people and newcomers. By developing connections to the city, they will start to feel at home. We believe that being

PATRÍCIA CAME A LONG WAY BEFORE FINALLY SETTLING IN UTRECHT. TEN YEARS AGO, SHE MET DUTCH PEOPLE IN CHINA, WHERE SHE STUDIED AT THE TIME. THEIR FRIENDSHIP AND LIFESTYLE CONVINCED HER THAT THE LIFE SHE IMAGINED WOULD BE IN THE NETHERLANDS. AFTER QUITTING HER JOB IN PORTUGAL, SHE LANDED IN UTRECHT WITH JUST ONE SUITCASE. SOCIAL ANIMALS

‘There are many things I like about Dutch society: they are hardworking, honest, extremely ethical, efficient and welcoming. The Dutch are risk takers, so it’s very easy to come up with new ideas and embrace them. What is different from my culture is that everything seems quite transactional in a way. When you receive something, it feels like you have to pay back immediately. Portugal is more community based. When we give our time, we don’t always charge for it if we give out of kindness. Also, the Dutch are social animals. They are very easy to engage in social interactions. Always easy going, no formalities. I really love that.’

SPEAK is a social franchise. It’s a chapter of an organisation based in Portugal and present in 24 other cities. The aim of SPEAK is to make people feel at home through events. People volunteer their time to teach their own language: from Spanish to French and from Mandarin to Hungarian.

Even though I am Portuguese, the sun is not the most important thing for me to survive and feel good. But at SOIA, I get that beach feeling that I miss.

DRINKS I like to go to BUNK for Thursday afternoon drinks after working with fellow social impact makers. This place reminds me of how much this city never stops.

MUSIC & CULTURE I’m amazed and proud that we have such an awesome music institution in our city like TivoliVredenburg. The best festival in town is Le Guess Who? I’m all about culture, music and people, and this festival manages to bring this all together.

THROWBACK

Utrecht is in a constant state of flux, but luckily, some things never change. The waterside wharves in the city centre are still lined with friendly terraces where you can sit and enjoy a sunny morning or afternoon. In 1980, these people were sitting in the sun outside the Foo coffee bar, which was based in one of the wharf cellars on Vismarkt. You’ll still find coffee bars here, but most of the terraces on the waterside have disappeared in this part of town. So something has changed after all. > In collaboration with Het Utrechts Archief. Sudden and Suspended FROM REFINED INTIMACY TO HEART-POUNDING ABRASIVENESS

The world premiere of Edward Clug’s (Romania) new work displays a poetic and dynamic nature to his choreographic language with a strong contrast in detail that creates refined, intimate and sensual movements. Another world premiere is the choreography of Tiffany Tregarthen and David Raymond (Canada), which can be

described as cinematic and gravity defying. This work pushes the traditional aesthetics and forms of dance through research, experimentation and rigorous free play. IMPASSE by Johan Inger (Sweden) questions the ability to collectively interrogate the world, and to find the capacity to reimagine it. Fluid movements and strong rhythms are translated through moments of hysterical comic relief and manic isolation that demand an increasing sense of urgency.

May/Jun 2022 — MAG Utrecht

ALL THE ROOMS HAVE A NOD TO THE MUSEUMS OF UTRECHT

Next time? MUZE HOTEL IS THE PERFECT PLACE FOR ANYONE WHO ENJOYS SMALL-SCALE, PERSONAL CONTACT. EACH OF THE SIX ROOMS IS UNIQUE, WITH A NOD TO THE MUSEUMS OF UTRECHT. ONE OF THE ROOMS HAS A TELESCOPE, FOR EXAMPLE, AS A REFERENCE TO THE SONNEBORGH OBSERVATORY ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WATER. FROM RUIN TO HOTEL The building on Tolsteegsingel had always been a hotel, but had been abandoned and left empty for years. Plants were growing inside, and the basement flooded whenever it rained. But this didn’t stop Cocky and Paul (sister and brother) and three daughters Bo, Puk and Belle from turning it into a veritable palace. It’s a hotel that offers that extra personal touch: the owners

like to know who their guests are and why they’re visiting Utrecht. A communal lounge area has been created on the ground floor, so that the owners and guests can meet for a chat. And this is moved to the courtyard garden if the sun’s shining. > MUZE Hotel Tolsteegsingel 34 muzehotelutrecht.com
