MAG Utrecht — Nov/Dec 2022

Some people call it the best time of the year: the run-up to Christmas. And if you live in Utrecht or visit the city in these weeks, that might actually be true. This year, the Saint Martin Parade is bigger and better than ever. The event will bring the Utrecht 900 celebrations to a spectacular end. All 10 of the city’s neighbourhoods have been working hard to make light sculptures and lamps to carry through the streets in an impressive festival of light. Other highlights include discovering new music at Le Guess Who?, buying local presents at one of the winter markets, drinking wine in of the city’s cosy wine bars, ice skating in the festively decorated Railway Museum and visiting the huge nativity scene in Museum Catharijneconvent. Happy holidays!

FEMALE FREETHINKERS

Women’s Voices Utrecht

In early November, the Geertekerk church will reverberate with the sounds of Tibetan spiritual songs and mantras, Coptic Egyptian hymns, songs by Mediaeval power women, contemporary compositions, poetry and spoken word. The Women’s Voices Utrecht exhibition, in honour of the city’s 900th anniversary, focuses on female freethinkers, peacemakers and innovators, with performances by vocal ensemble Wishful Singing, singers Namgyal Lhamo and Sally Hanna, word artist Gabriel Erlach and poet Randa Awad. > 10 November, Geertekerk culture-connection.org

Brickwork

You probably see it every day, but never really consider the aesthetic aspect of it: brickwork. Over fifty artists, architects and designers from the Netherlands and abroad have thought about it and are now showing the beauty of bricks in all their glory in Kunsthal KAdE in Amersfoort. Photographer Caroline Heinecke pays homage to the collection of a brick collector with a photo of a brick on a plinth, Shilpa Gupta lets you feel for yourself what it’s like to push back boundaries while walking along a brick wall, and a ‘brickwork tour’ of the city reveals numerous brick follies built around the city. > until 8 January 2023, Kunsthal KAdE (Amersfoort) kunsthalkade.nl/en

It’s 150 years old and has a high ceiling, a balcony, stained glass windows and great acoustics. In fact it’s very like the Amsterdam Paradiso, albeit on a much smaller scale. The historic Marnixzaal on Domplein is a beautiful place for intimate recitals, and for the last couple of years, it’s been open to the public. The room, which is the Utrecht Music Academy (DUMS), regularly hosts concerts by artists from UJazz and the Rietveld Ensemble. IMPAKT Festival

We all know how frustrating it can be when technology doesn’t work properly, is unpredictable or cuts out completely. The IMPAKT Festival challenges you to see things from the opposite perspective: is technology at its most unsatisfactory when it does work? So the festival programme which comprises two exhibitions, film screenings, lectures, singing, talks and performances, actually doesn’t focus on the beauty of errors, but on the horror of things that work perfectly.

Tangerine

How can we view the world around us without being blinkered? This is the aim of The Bigger Picture evenings by Hoogt on Tour in Villa Concordia. Speakers and hands-on experts encourage you to think critically, and examine your own biases. Take sex work, for example. Countless films have been made on the subject, but Tangerine is one of very few that actually looks at things from the sex workers’ perspective. It shows life as it really is for the laughing and cursing Sin-Dee and Alexandra, two flamboyant, transgender sex workers who work on the streets of Los Angeles. > 18 November, Hoogt on Tour in Villa Concordia hoogt.nl

HAVE YOU EVER STOPPED AT A LAMPPOST TO TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT THE STICKERS SPREAD ALL OVER IT? NO? YOU SHOULD. LAURA WITTMANN FROM BERLIN, WHO ANALYSED POLITICAL STREET STICKERS IN UTRECHT FOR HER MASTER THESIS, TELLS YOU WHY. By Laura Wittmann

ome bring back sand as a souvenir from the beaches they have travelled to. Others collect magnets with skylines of the cities they have explored and attach them as memories to their kitchen fridge. My favourite sort of souvenirs are stickers. Ever since I started collecting stickers myself, I perceive the city in a different way. I became aware of the omnipresence of stickers in urban environments. Not paying attention to them and the stories they’re telling became almost impossible. In my hometown Berlin, a dense hub of public artistic expression, every step outside the door turns into a research expedition. But the lamp posts, rain gutters and street signs of Utrecht, the city I moved to a year ago for my masters, are also covered by innumerable amounts of stickers.

ANALOGUE TWITTER

It all starts with a shift of perspective. When dwelling through the city, our attention is more and more drawn towards commercial advertisement. Street art, on the contrary, is a way of reclaiming public space. It’s up to us to sharpen our view and start perceiving the city as a public gallery - open to everyone at any time and free of charge! As a form of street art, stickers are a means to publicly voice an opinion, make a statement or just be silly on a couple of sticky

SPOTLIGHT

Cultural jamming You’ve probably spotted the logo of the Run DMC on the streets of Utrecht, but most likely not in its original form. Starting with a fashion collaboration with Adidas in the 1980s, the logo of the iconic hip hop band from Queens, New York, has been adapted many times and has become a global pop culture phenomenon. If you pay attention, you will see it in all possible variations, often combined with a provoking FCK and sometimes turned into a small-scale ad for vegan hot dogs. This is only one of countless examples of cultural jamming, a creative practice of reimagining recognizable cultural symbols to give them a new meaning.

square centimetres. Imagine it as a sort of analogue Twitter. Strolling through this offline feed can be instructive at many levels. Visitors and locals alike can learn a lot about current social issues and trends, local culture and global interconnectedness. Not convinced yet? I will give you some examples.

CONTROVERSY

For my master thesis, I analysed political street stickers in the beautiful Voorstraat the best possible way to earn an academic degree. I cherry-picked a couple of stickers I found there for you. Let’s start with a brief

THE TURQUOISE FACADE OF ACU IS THE MONA LISA OF THE PUBLIC GALLERY MONA LISA

When paying attention to stickers as interconnected networks instead of studying them individually, we can get hints of prominent social issues and patterns. In Voorstraat, for example, one quickly notices the multitude of stickers on the housing crisis in Utrecht and other Dutch cities. You probably know what I am talking about. My favourite sticker-spot in Voorstraat to observe the dynamics of sticker culture is the turquoise facade of the autonomous political-cultural centre ACU. It’s covered by a sticker cluster that changes and expands every day. In my eyes, this is the Mona Lisa of the public gallery.

Photography Laura Wittmann

STICKING CHARACTERS Dutch lesson. As a non-native speaker, it took me a while to get the meaning of the most Dutch of all of the Dutch expressions: ‘Ga toch fietsen!’. The sticker, probably related to the local Fietsersbond, plays with what literally translates to ‘Go biking already!’. It actually means something like ‘stop being ridiculous’. Next time you want to impress a Dutchie, you know what to say. Another sticker, featuring the text ‘Zwarte Piet is racisme’, teaches us about (questionable) Dutch traditions, as it references two of them. Approaching Christmas, you will not get around trying pepernoten, the sweet treat that is depicted in the background of the sticker. However, the tradition of the Zwarte Piet, the black servant of the traditional figure of Sinterklaas, has been causing controversies for years. Should we really perpetuate discriminatory customs for the sake of conserving traditions? It’s up to you if you want to bring that topic up on the first Christmas Eve with your Dutch in-laws...

MAG-Utrecht#38_Spotlight.indd 13

Seeing the known in unknown forms, noticing familiar stickers or recognising patterns in places far away from my hometown makes the world feel a little bit smaller. This short text only allows for a glimpse into the many layers of sticker culture. And I haven’t even introduced the sticking characters of Utrecht yet, of which Bunbun(030) (aka the second bunny of Utrecht), Baardmans and Teddiesinspace are only a few. Look out for them hanging out all over the city - mostly on their own and sometimes enjoying a last supper in good company of other street art characters. Who do you recognize at the holy table in the BunBun(030) sticker collaboration above? I hope to have convinced you to turn into an urban explorer next time you wander through the streets of Utrecht, searching and tracking the sticky traces of this form of street art.

Q&A WITH TALITHA VERHEIJ & SANNE VAN BUUREN By Wieneke van Koppen

Seven years ago, Talitha Verheij and Sanne van Buuren opened the Netherlands’ first ever classical music bar: Het Muzieklokaal. Countless established and novice musicians have since performed here. Verheij: ‘Most venues in the classical sector try to attract audiences to their concerts. We take the opposite approach and take the music to our guests. Until the pandemic, we had fortnightly live performances on Thursday and Saturday, but we play classical music in the bar every day of the week. We aren’t worried about the classical sector dying a death, but we think that young people should be introduced to classical music, or any music, at an early age. Some people just feel more comfortable in a hospitality venue than in a large cultural institution. Luckily, Het Muzieklokaal isn’t the only initiative in or outside Utrecht that tries to bring people into contact with classical music. Take Pieces of Tomorrow in TivoliVredenburg, for example. They’re doing great work!

MAG-Utrecht#38_Q&A.indd 14

Het Muzieklokaal has steadily built up a reputation as a cultural place for classical music, and that was our aim. We’d like to expand into other music genres in the future, like jazz and world music. And we want to include more theatre and poetry on our programme, and visual art exhibitions.’ > Het Muzieklokaal Bemuurde Weerd OZ 13 hetmuzieklokaal.nl Het Muzieklokaal

Authentic theatre ‘Not many people know this, but in 1766, a celebrity slept in the Schiller Theatre: Mozart. There’s a memorial stone marking the event at the front door. It’s an intriguing thought, but coming to this small old theatre to see a performance is even more intriguing. It’s very characteristic: the interior is so authentic that it’s like going back in time. A great addition to the other theatres in the city.’

Something fishy ‘The Vismarkt is a fabulous piece of Utrecht history. A famous composer used to come here too. It’s said that Brahms liked to come here for a spot of fish - particularly freshly smoked eel before going on to Lucasbolwerk to join his fellow-composers.’

musician’s motto, and we couldn’t agree more. We always nip outside to listen when he sails past.’

Music boxes ‘In 2013, a section of the quay on the canal caved in, just around the corner from here. Musical box maker Rob de Looff gave us a musical box made from the plane trees that had fallen along with the quayside. ‘This box belongs in your spot’, he said. He’s made lots of beautiful musical boxes from the trees, and some of them are on sale here. All of them are hand-made and engraved. You can find his showroom at Donkerstraat 21.’ Pandhof

Future Mozarts ‘You can hear the future Mozarts and Brahms in the Pandhof behind the music academy. This is a great place, close to Mariaplaats, where you can grab a coffee-to-go and enjoy the music spilling out through the open windows.

Matter of luck ‘If you happen to be walking or sitting alongside a canal at the right time, you might just see a small boat sailing past with a man playing an organ. Seeing or hearing this music boat is a matter of luck: there’s no timetable. If you’re very lucky, there might even be an opera singer onboard too. ‘Taking music to the people’, is the

KEEP THE FAITH

JERUSALEM

Atta Nasser, born in Jerusalem, and Scarlet Tummers, born in The Hague, met on the planks. Despite their differences, and thanks to their similarities, they are trying to discover the meaning of faith, both in religious practices and in day-to-day life. The result is a dialogue between two makers who want to confront themselves, each other and the audience with their interpretation of what Jerusalem stands for.

TRIPTYCH

NOW HERE, NOW ALWAYS This triptych demands the utmost of virtuosity and expression from the dancers of NDT2. Opener is Marco Goecke’s The Big Crying, a very personal work that he made shortly after his father’s death. The movement language, set to the music of Tori Amos, is angular, pulsating and explosive. Many of the works of Andrew Skeels integrate fluid partnering and group work that is developed with masterful precision and interpersonal connection. And with Cacti, Alexander Ekman amusingly challenges the audience to reflect on modern dance as a higher art form, set to music by Haydn, Beethoven and Schubert.

The work of the French choreographer and theatremaker Antonin Rioche puts his finger on the sore spots of modern-day life. This female counterpart of Rioche’s solo Ohboy! from 2017 is an intimate choreography about burn-out, about recognising and acknowledging the burdens we have to contend with. How did gospel music evolve? ‘It has its roots in the spirituals, the music sung by the enslaved people in the cotton fields in the Deep South of the United States. Missionaries sent to spread the word of God added their own Western harmonies in the form of chords and melodies. And, of course, the guitar. The enslaved themselves didn’t have string instruments, only percussion and their voices. So the spirituals gradually evolved into gospel in the churches founded by the

lot of people associate gospel with joyful renditions of Oh Happy Day by Edwin Hawkins or Elvis Presley’s gospel songs. But there’s a lot more to this highly influential music genre, which goes right back to the days of slavery. ‘It stands for hope and comfort. During the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 60s, the music was used by the black population in the United States in their fight for equality. It still happens today. If disaster strikes in the United States, people sing gospel. Barack Obama sang Amazing Grace during the commemoration of the mass shooting in Charleston in 2015. The music is still relevant, and that’s not about to change,’ says singer Shirma Rouse, who co-curated the exhibition.

missionaries. Later on, it was embraced by popular artists such as Ray Charles, who converted It Must Be Jesus into I’ve Got A Woman. Other famous artists past and present, including Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Beyoncé, Kanye West and also the Dutch Trijntje Oosterhuis, began their singing careers in the church. You can still hear the influence of gospel in some secular music, such as pop, rock, soul, jazz and hip-hop.’ The Netherlands isn’t the first country that springs to mind when you think of gospel… ‘And yet it’s very much alive in the Netherlands. Gospel is sung in over 600 international churches here. You also hear it in other churches, partly thanks to the cross-over between gospel, introduced by migrants, and evangelical, Catholic and reformed churches. There were concerts by American gospel artists in Theater Carré and the Concertgebouw as early as the late 19th century. In those days, you could even attend a gospel concert in Utrecht, in the Geertekerk and in Tivoli. One of the

oldest and most famous formations, the Fisk Jubilee Singers, gave a special performance for King Willem II. It’s not widely known that as well as American jazz and blues artists, a lot of gospel formations also toured in the Netherlands. That’s what makes this exhibition so interesting!’ You don’t have to be religious to enjoy gospel, do you? ‘No, this music is for everyone. That’s the power of gospel: it’s full of hope and happiness. Gospel has a positive message. The venues are packed when

I perform with my band. And contrary to what you might think, there are a lot of white people in the audience. White gospel choirs are common too. People just love the music. I got so many great reactions after being a coach on the TV programme Amazing Grace, in which Dutch celebrities sang gospel! You have to sing with conviction - that’s the main thing.’ What does gospel mean to you personally? ‘It’s like getting into a warm bath. Gospel is the common thread running through my life. It inspires and invigorates me. Gospel is an invitation to praise God. I grew up with it. My parents are religious, and my grandmas sang gospel and played piano in church. To me, gospel is a way of life, like other people can’t do without their meat and two veg. People often say: “It really moves me; I don’t know why.” It’s the holy ghost, or spirit, that moves you.’ Who’s your favourite gospel singer? ‘I love singing Aretha Franklin songs, but in true tradition, I’d have to choose Mahalia Jackson. She chose just to sing gospel. You have to be dedicated to do that. She really inspires me: dedicating your life to the Lord, his music and his message. I sing other genres too, such as pop, soul and reggae. I feel the same commitment, but I can express it in several types of music. As long as the music has a positive message, that’s enough for me.’

ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE Three artists spent a period living and working in a monastery on the Vecht: Buitenplaats Doornburgh in Maarssen. The NIEUW WERK exhibition is a presentation of the paintings, installations and sculptures that they created during their residency. The monumental oil paintings made by the Korean artist Chae Eun Rhee are assemblages, in which real and virtual people, art history and regular day-to-day events that caught the artist’s attention move across each other at random. The Utrecht artist Natalia Ossef explored the history and nature of the park they were staying in. This resulted in a combination of installations, photography, videos and registrations of ‘landart performances’, in which she quite literally digs into the earth of the park. And Bart Lunenburg, also from Utrecht, is exhibiting drawings and sculptures made from brick and wood in the cloisters of the monastery. > until 8 January 2023, Buitenplaats Doornburgh (Maarssen) buitenplaatsdoornburgh.nl Chae Eun Rhee

DOUBLE ACT

What do paintings by old masters have in common with modern video installations by contemporary artists? This winter, the Centraal Museum is combining two very different collections: the monumental video installations from the internationally renowned art collection of the American Kramlich family, and highlights from its own collection of 17th-century paintings. Placing modern-day icons such as Bill Viola, Marina Abramovi , Richard Mosse, Bruce Nauman and Steve McQueen, alongside old masters such as Hendrick Golzius, Roeland Saverij, Paulus and Johannes Moreelse and the Utrecht-based Caravaggisti artists Dirck van Baburen, Hendrick ter Brugghen and Gerard van Honthorst, not only magnifies the differences, but also exposes some intriguing similarities.

you can take your beer in with you, the classical pieces are shorted to a maximum of an hour, the musicians are casually dressed, the concert hall is nicely lit and host DJ St. Paul plays some tracks beforehand and has a chat with the conductor.

NEW LOOK

You can’t fail to enjoy a concert given by a full orchestra. Peter Tra, classical music programmer at TivoliVredenburg, is utterly convinced. But why don’t young people go to classical concerts? Because of the form they take, says Peter. It’s time for a change. So together with Sytse Wils, programmer of pop music, he came up with Pieces of Tomorrow. The formula is simple: the evening starts later,

MAG-Utrecht#38_Culture.indd 35

Lovers of classical music will wring their hands in horror at the thought of compressing a classical masterwork into an hour… ‘I had a hard job convincing people the first time’, Peter remembers. ‘The then-chief conductor of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra reacted to the idea as follows: “A DJ? No way!” But we never intended to accompany work by Mozart with beats. We leave the music alone, it’s fine as it is. We just change the entourage.’ The classical sector has been searching for innovative ideas to attract younger audiences for years. Thirty-yearolds simply don’t want to sit still for three hours among an audience of overseventies. The Pieces formula is perfect for them. Peter wants to stress that it isn’t intended to persuade people to come to regular classical concerts. ‘I’m sometimes asked whether they’re ‘coming through’ yet’, but I see Pieces as classical concerts in their own right, but with a new look. I’d say: just get used to it.’

OVERWHELMING

The Radio Philharmonic Orchestra are on stage most evenings. The orchestra performs the same music a day later in

36 MAG Utrecht — Nov/Dec 2022

TivoliVredenburg (hence the name Pieces of Tomorrow), but they then play the whole piece to a very different audience. Could you call Pieces of Tomorrow a classical evening for dummies? Not according to Peter. ‘The Pieces audiences are typically our most intent, hungry audiences. Just imagine the reaction of a thousand or so young people, many of them listening to a full orchestra for the very first time. The interaction between the audience and the orchestra is fantastic.’ Host DJ St. Paul, a.k.a. Paul Nederveen, acts as a go-between, by chatting with the conductor. He too is no expert in classical music. ‘The audience are uninitiated, and so am I. But I try to find some basic information about the piece and the composer, mainly so that

MAG-Utrecht#38_Culture.indd 36

GRIPPING AND SINISTER

The Pieces programme is a challenge every season, explains Peter. ‘Our audiences are no more familiar with Mozart than with Kancheli, for example, which gives us a lot of scope.’ However, he’s noticed that pompous, gripping and sinister music goes down better than ‘graceful, impressionistic strings’, as Paul puts it. This season, the programme features Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony (his last, unfinished work), Schubert’s Eighth Symphony

POMPOUS, GRIPPING AND SINISTER MUSIC GOES DOWN BETTER THAN GRACEFUL, IMPRESSIONISTIC STRINGS

I can ask interesting questions’, says Paul. But you can’t always predict how a conductor on the stage will respond to those questions. Sometimes Paul has difficulty getting the microphone back from the conductor, where other conversations are a bit more difficult. ‘I remember that Edo de Waart, the patriarch of Dutch top conductors, seemed a bit reserved during our pre-concert conversation. He didn’t know what to expect. Luckily, he relaxed once he was on stage. Our shared love of music created a bond - in fact even Bruno Mars came up in the conversation, which was really cool. Pop and classical aren’t really as different as they seem. The Jaws theme music, for example, is almost a carbon copy of Stravinsky, and a lot of dance music is full of classical samples. This is how we try to bridge the gap between pop and classical during the Pieces evenings.’

ADVENTURE SEATS

The Radio Philharmonic Orchestra musicians are now keen fans of the Pieces formula, continues Peter. ‘Some evenings, people from the audience are invited to sit on so-called ‘adventure seats’, which are empty seats placed between members of the orchestra on the stage. I thought that the novelty would soon wear off if we did this every Pieces evening. But I was wrong. The musicians gave me a really hard time when I didn’t put out the empty seats once’, says Peter laughing.

DJ St. Pau l

(also unfished, but nobody knows why) and Mahler’s Sixth Symphony (his ‘darkest’ work). When compiling a playlist for before and after the concert, Paul tries to find parallels between the type of artist and the feel of the music. ‘You often end up with richly arranged sounds, mostly written by tormented romantic souls within the pop industry. But that gives you a lot of scope too: it could be music by Nick Drake, or equally, a female rapper from Zambia.’

In honour of the ‘city without walls’ theme, the group has carved a wooden replica of Vredenburg castle. ‘The theme conjured up images of the massive act of rebellion against the walls in Utrecht in 1577’, explains Saskia. ‘A group of women led by one of my heroines, Trijn van Leemput, stormed and demolished Vredenburg Castle. Our sculpture is made from wood left over from Utrecht trees. It shows every detail, from the turrets to the drawbridge. LAURA WITTMANN FROM BERLIN

LAURA WITTMANN FROM GERMANY HAS ONLY BEEN IN UTRECHT FOR A YEAR, BUT TRULY DESERVES TO BE CALLED A ‘NEW LOCAL’. SHE HAS DISCOVERED MORE OF THE CITY THAN MANY OF US WOULD DO IN A YEAR: LAURA IS UP-TO-DATE ON ALL THE EVENTS AND HAS BEEN TO MOST OF THE COOL PLACES THAT YOU HAVE TO VISIT WHILE LIVING UTRECHT. By Anita Nánási

‘I studied communication in social and economic contexts in Berlin. During the COVID-pandemic, I followed a course from my in-between master studies, called Intercultural Competencies. I really liked it, so I started looking for a masters on this topic. The search led me to the Intercultural Communication programme at Utrecht University. It mainly focuses on how language, cultures and identity are connected. Think of subjects like the power of language, what it means to switch to another language and intercultural work spaces. The latter is especially interesting in the Netherlands as multiculturality is starting to become the norm in many organisations.’

GIVE IT A SHOT

‘I had never been to Utrecht before, but I heard it was like a small Amsterdam. I was in Amsterdam as a tourist and really loved it It was in my top three cities to visit again for a long time. When I got accepted to the masters in Utrecht, I decided to just give it a shot. Once I moved here, I liked it a lot more than Amsterdam. It exceeded my expectations and the city became a home very quickly.’

Laura’s favourites SUPER NICE I have a part time job in Restaurant Syr. Besides the food being amazing, the people are super nice. They make me feel at home every day.

NEVER BORING There’s always something going on at De Nijverheid: music, food, exhibitions, and the Boot 122 microbrewery.

EASY-GOING

‘In my masters, we emphasise that we shouldn’t generalise, but I can’t help but noticing that people are very relaxed here. Like in bike traffic, for example. When you go cycling in Berlin, people tend to be very mad at each other. Here, everyone keeps smiling and never stops being polite. People are easy-going. On a nice evening, they will grab their chairs and have dinner in front of their house. I think you can really feel that the city makes people happy. The urban planning, with lots of space for pedestrians and bikes and with few cars around, has a big influence on people’s well-being.’

DAY TRIPS

‘If you are in Utrecht for a short period of time, like me, I would advise to take advantage of the city’s central location. Plan day trips! Within the country you can visit The Hague and Delft, but Germany, Belgium, France and the United Kingdom are also easily accessible by public transport.’

COSY CINEMA Slachtstraat Filmtheater is a tiny, cosy cinema in the heart of the city.

GUILTY PLEASURE Because the university library is right next to it, De Bakkerswinkel became my guilty pleasure after a long day of studying.

LANGUAGE CAFÉ Every Wednesday night, there’s the Language Café at Café Marktzicht. It’s a great way to meet people when you are new in town.

COFFEE FIX Dagger Coffee is a tiny coffee place where you can study in peace if you didn’t manage to get a spot at the university or Neude library. They have great specialty coffee.

Sterrenwijk, known by locals as ’t wijk, is one of Utrecht’s smallest neighbourhoods. It originally consisted of 375 temporary white houses, erected post-1918. They were meant to last for 25 years, but due to the immense housing shortage after World War II, the houses remained and became increasingly dilapidated. According to former Sterrenwijkers, this didn’t dampen the community spirit. In 1976, the white houses were demolished. The population became more diverse, which obviously affected the character of the neighbourhood. In the old days, the street was an extension of people’s living rooms, whereas nowadays, people seldom bump into each other outside. In the exhibition entitled Een kijk op ’t wijk, you can learn more about the past and present of Sterrenwijk. > until 5 March 2023, Volksbuurtmuseum volksbuurtmuseum.nl

REVIVAL OF A BROADWAY-OPERA

Lady in the dark

In Kurt Weill’s famous Broadway-opera Lady in the Dark, Liza Elliot, editor of a fashion magazine, ends up on a psychiatrist’s couch due to panic attacks and symptoms of depression. By analysing her dreams, the psychiatrist gets to the heart of Liza’s problems. In the opera, Weill takes the audience into Liza’s subconscious through three dream sequences, based on her psychoanalysis. These dreams are about the contemporary issues women are dealing with in a hectic society, like performance pressure, self-image and self-fulfillment. The performance marks the first time Opera Zuid presents this Weill classic to Dutch audiences. In the opera, the promising British director Anna Pool reflects - with a wink - on the dated menwomen relationships of the 1940s. In addition to being a sublime combination of opera and Broadway music, Lady in the Dark is also a visual spectacle with beautiful costumes based on 1940s fashion. The opera is sung in English, with Dutch and English surtitles. > 15 November, Stadsschouwburg Utrecht Buy your tickets at ssbu.nl

From 2017 onwards, the artist Marijke van Warmerdam lived in Rome and shot a series of 16 films that brought together the past, present and future of the city. In her films, she traces the dynamic way in which Baroque still has a place in contemporary Roman life. Urban sounds form the soundtrack for the installation that glues the films together.
