MAG Utrecht — Nov/Dec 2018

Welcome to Utrecht

© Juri Hiensch

The festival of St Maarten, the patron saint of Utrecht, is celebrated in November with a parade of lights, lanterns and music. Also, going to the movies is a good antidote to the dark and cold nights leading up to Christmas. So it’s good news that two film theatres in town decided to regularly screen international art house films with English subtitles. There’s music, too: in November, the experimental music festival Le Guess Who? hits town. And December is packed with wintry events. There’s a proper ice rink in the Railway Museum, where kids (and their parents) can have a go at ice skating. And during the weekend of 14, 15 and 16 December, there are picturesque markets, live music and mulled wine to get you into the Christmas spirit. MAG Utrecht also features a calendar with up-to-date information on all the festivals, theatre, art, movies and music events taking place in the city in November and December. You can find all the places we mention on the map in this magazine. So get to know the special places, the best bars and restaurants and the full scope of cultural activities the city has to offer, whether you are in the heart of the city or in one of the suburbs. We hope you have a wonderful time.

Drawing is probably the most accessible form of art there is. After all, we’ve all done a drawing at some time or other. Even artists like to draw and sketch, albeit in very diverse styles. The Centraal Museum is hosting an exhibition of drawings from 1950 until the present day. It’s not the result that counts, but the process that leads up to it. > until 18 November, Centraal Museum centraalmuseum.nl/en

FESTIVAL

Local beer festival

A golden opportunity for beer buffs: over twenty-five bars in the city centre will spend three days serving mainly Dutch beer. Every bar will have two different beers from a Dutch brewery on draught. So in theory, you can taste a total of fifty different beers. There’s a street map showing all the bars so you can set out your route in advance. > 2 to 4 November, various bars in the city centre streekbierfestival.nl

THEATRE

Go north and see what those strangers do Five men and a whale find themselves in a remote spot somewhere in the far North. The icy wind sweeps across the seemingly endless plains, making the atmosphere even more depressing than it was. Who are these men and why are they here? In this raw, gritty performance, in which dance flows effortlessly into circus and vice versa, the men speak candidly about their feelings, facing the confrontation head-on. The confrontation with themselves, but more importantly, the confrontation with each other. > 4 December, Stadsschouwburg Utrecht stadsschouwburg-utrecht.nl

‘UTRECHT FEELS LIKE MY HOME NOW’ Marek Sustak From the Czech Republic, studied at the Utrecht School of Economics ‘I love park Bloeyendael in the summer, when it’s in bloom. It’s a great place to get away from it all. I also love going for a bike ride to Theehuis Rhijnauwen for a delicious Dutch pancake. If you’re feeling hungry after a night out, though, Burger Bar is the place to go. They’re right next to Neude, open till 4am every day, and they serve the best burgers in town.’

What’s happening? Filippo Ricci From Italy, following a master’s in Multidisciplinary Economics Research ‘I love Café Olivier. It literally is a hidden gem because it used to be a schuilkerk or ‘hidden church’ during the protestant Reformation. And Pandhof, a mini-garden close to the Dom tower, is a great place to relax. It is the perfect place to take a short break from the busy city life.’

CULTURAL SUNDAY

Utrecht Digital

Whether we know it or not, digital technology is now part of our lives. On Sunday 4 November, come and learn about the latest trends, projects, background and history of the digital culture. It all starts at midnight, with an ‘algorave’ (where you can dance to music created with algorithms) in EKKO. After that, Utrecht-based organisations, artists and training programmes will use mixed-media installations, virtual and augmented reality, interactive games, robotic art, multimedia shows, unexpected lectures and presentations by digital designers, inventors and artists to explain some of the subjects that play a role in society today. > 4 November, various locations culturelezondagen.nl/english

d C. Be

On 5 December, the Netherlands celebrates Sinterklaas. As he is the patron saint of children, the celebrations are all about kids and they are traditionally bombarded with presents. On Sunday 18 November, Sinterklaas’ steam boat docks at the Weerdsluis after sailing through the Oudegracht from Ledig Erf. Sinterklaas will then mount his faithful horse Amerigo and continue along his way with his cheerful helpers (‘Piets’) until he reaches Domplein, where children can enjoy all sorts of entertainment.

MUSIC

Fuse

The six musicians from Fuse transport you to a musical world that you never knew existed. They are all trained in classical music, jazz, pop and improvisation. In a quirky combination of a string quartet, double bass and percussion, they play a repertoire that switches from contemporary classical and folk to minimal and swing, with a brief stop at jazz and blues. > 3 November, Podium Hoge Woerd podiumhogewoerd.nl

INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE, COSY WORKERS’ COTTAGES, STATELY WATERSIDE HOUSES AND NICE LOCAL HANGOUTS: YOU’LL SEE THEM ALL DURING A WALK THROUGH MULTICULTURAL LOMBOK, WITH THE LIVELY KANAALSTRAAT AS THE BEATING HEART OF THIS DISTRICT. By Dieuwke de Boer

I

t’s always a good idea to start a walk with a nice cup of coffee. As it happens, one of the city’s best coffee bars is located in this district. Cross Westplein (also known as Utrecht’s ugliest square…) to Vleutenseweg, where you’ll see Koffie & Ik on the opposite side of the street. Order a cup of filter coffee, a latte with honey or a strong espresso at the reading table or in one of the cosy window seats. When you’ve finished, walk along Damstraat (with the Ulu mosque on your left) to Leidsekade. Turn right before you reach the major crossroads and take the footpath along the canal. This path turns into Timorkade. Cross the canal and you’ll find yourself on the yard of the Molen de Ster sawmill. They give guided tours every Saturday afternoon, explaining all about this authentic, fully operational sawmill dating from 1739. If the mill is closed, you can wander around the park instead. The cosy café is open during the day from Wednesday to Sunday. Continue along until you reach Leidsekade, keeping the canal to your left. Where the road bends to the right, turn left across a small bridge. You are now facing the impressive Muntgebouw, an old mint where coins used to be hammered. These days, it’s a conference and events venue, but sadly you’re not allowed in.

Q&A

WITH ANESTIS AMANATIDIS By Dieuwke de Boer

Het Muzieklokaal

Anestis Amanatidis (25) works as a freelancer in brand strategy and creative concepting. He is Greek, grew up in the south of Germany and has been living in Utrecht for four and a half years. Anestis came here to study International Communication and Media, not knowing what to expect. ‘I didn’t even google Utrecht’, he says, ‘but it turned out to be perfect. I love the size of the city. It’s big enough to constantly discover new things, and small enough to not feel like a number in a big city.’

Nov/Dec 2018 — MAG Utrecht

Watch the boats

Nature

‘One of my favourite things is getting a coffee at Het Muzieklokaal (Bemuurde Weerd OZ 13). If the weather’s good I like to sit on the platform along the canal just outside the café, to read, think or just watch the boats passing by on the canal. Another really nice place is De Utrechtse Boekenbar (Westerkade 2), close to Ledig Erf.’

‘At Skatepark Ruigenhoek, just north of Overvecht district, it feels like being in the middle of nature while it’s actually just five minutes away from the city. Another beautiful place is Lombok. I especially like to go grocery shopping on Kanaalstraat, going from shop to shop looking for the best ingredients.’

Mind-blowing

Anchor

‘For authentic Greek food, head to Ouzeri To Steki (Oudegracht 261). And WT Urban Kitchen (Heuveloord 25A) is a restaurant on the top two floors of an old water tower. The food always blows my mind. The view on the tenth floor is amazing, but you have to book months in advance if you want a table there. I prefer the charm of the ninth floor, because you are actually sitting in the water tower itself. My tip: book a table on the ninth floor and ask if you can eat your dessert on the tenth floor.’

‘A tradition me and my friend started last year is ‘Sunday Funday’. We figured we need some kind of anchor because we all travel around a lot. So every Sunday at six o’clock, we meet in Café Flater (Oudegracht 140) for drinks. When I’m in town I just go, because I know there’s always someone there.’

UTRECHT, CARAVAGGIO AND EUROPE At the start of the Golden Age, Rome was the centre of the world. Budding painters from across Europe were drawn to the city where - it was rumoured - Caravaggio was causing a revolution. He’d created a new realism in the world of art, and it was that they had to see for themselves. Utrecht-born painters Dirck van Baburen, Hendrick ter Brugghen and Gerard van Honthorst were among them. This exhibition displays not only their work, but also a top piece by Caravaggio himself (on loan from the Vatican).

SKATING BETWEEN THE TRAINS

WINTER STATION The canals may not be frozen over in December, but you can still skate if you’re visiting the city at the end of the month. The rink in the Railway Museum is the ideal spot to try your hand (or foot) at this typical Dutch winter pastime. You can hire skates on the spot and there’s hot chocolate and mulled wine to keep you warm while you skate between the trains. > from 22 December to 6 January 2019, Railway museum spoorwegmuseum.nl

During Knus, you can wander around the markets and browse the countless stalls selling local produce, vintage items and articles made by local entrepreneurs. You’ll find hot chocolate and mulled wine, served around a cosy fire. But that’s not all. Talented Utrecht locals give live performances in various spots around town: everything from music to street theatre, story-tellers and poets. > 14, 15 and 16 December, various locations in the city centre knusutrecht.nl

SHINE A LIGHT

ST MAARTEN The festival of St Maarten, the patron saint of Utrecht, is still celebrated in various places in the Netherlands in November. This obviously includes Utrecht. A whole week of activities throughout the city kicks off with a light show, music, singing, dance, food and performances around a gigantic fire on Friday 9 November at 18.00 in Berlijnplein in the centre of Leidsche Rijn. The St Maarten parade through the city centre is on Saturday 10 November from 17.30. This is an annual parade with lights, lanterns and music. If you want to join the parade or come and watch, bring some kind of light with you. It can be a lantern, Christmas tree lights around your hat, reflecting shoe soles... It doesnʼt matter what it is as long as it shines a light. > 4 to 11 November, various locations sintmaartenutrecht.nl

MIFFY MUSEUM Our tip: if you intend to visit the Miffy museum from the end of October, go in the evening. Every evening from 17.15 until 23.00, an illumination entitled ‘Miffy lives here’ showing Miffy and her friends having all kinds of winter adventures will be projected continuously onto the fa ade of the building. It lasts about thirteen minutes. Of course the Miffy museum is worth visiting during the day too; everything revolves around winter. > from late October, Miffy museum nijntjemuseum.nl

A brisk walk along the Kromme Rijn to the Amelisweerd or Rhijnauwen estate is always a good idea. And once you’re there, you can choose from several addresses for a pit stop: Vroeg (Achterdijk 1, Bunnik) for a serious breakfast, De Veldkeuken (Koningslaan 11A, Bunnik) for coffee and organic cake, Theehuis Rhijnauwen (Rhijnauwenselaan 16, Bunnik) for a sweet or savoury pancake or the cosy Stayokay café (Rhijnauwenselaan 14, Bunnik) for a relaxing lunch.
