MAG Utrecht — Jan/Feb 2019
Welcome to Utrecht Even though it’s cold in January & February, nothing beats a brisk walk along the circular canal surrounding the old city. Although you can’t make a complete circuit yet, the walk will still take you past the most beautiful spots Utrecht has to offer. In February, you can peek inside the homes of ordinary people and students during two living room festivals: Gluren bij de Buren and Stukafest. Sinking into someone’s comfy sofa to watch a performance by local talent sounds like a perfect way to spend a winter’s day, doesn’t it? MAG Utrecht also features a calendar with up-to-date information on all the theatre, exhibitions, festivals, movies and music events taking place in the city in the first two months of the year. You can find all the places we mention on the map in this magazine. So get to know the special places, the best bars and restaurants and the full scope of cultural activities the city has to offer, whether you are in the heart of the city or in one of the suburbs. We hope you have a great time.

Hygge
If you fancy a drink and a bite to eat away from the hustle and bustle of town, try one of the bars or restaurants on the outskirts of the city. This time we are featuring Hygge. There isn’t a literal translation for this Danish word, but ‘cosy’ probably comes closest. Whatever the word may mean, it usually revolves around eating and drinking together. And that’s exactly what you can expect here. The menu includes flans, salads, soup, sandwiches, nibbles, tacos and lots of choice for the kids. > Tuesday to Sunday from 10.30, Goeman Borgesiuslaan 77 hygge-utrecht.nl

Mustsee!
Utrecht, Caravaggio & Europe At the beginning of the Dutch Golden Age, Rome was the centre of the world. Young painters from throughout Europe were drawn to the city, where (it was said) Caravaggio was causing a revolution. This new realism in painting had to be seen to be believed. So this is precisely what the Utrecht artists Dirck van Baburen, Hendrick ter Brugghen and Gerard van Honthorst did. This exhibition doesn’t only feature their work, but also boasts a top piece by Caravaggio (on loan from the Vatican).

The last weekend of January is not only TivoliVredenburg’s fifth anniversary, but it’s also the fortieth anniversary of the Grote Zaal (largely used for classical concerts). So what can you expect? A packed programme varying from classical and jazz to pop and rock. It includes Colin Benders and the Metropole Orkest, Patti Smith and the first edition of the Footprints Festival, which combines traditional and modern sounds with influences from every corner of the world. They are made from the fruit and vegetables that are too big, small, bent or ugly for the supermarkets. So they’re not just delicious, they’re sustainable too.

Street art walk
Utrecht is bursting with fantastic murals and intriguing (illegal) graffiti. But as they say, every picture tells a story. If you’re curious about the stories behind the art, try the street tour organised by Greetings from Utrecht. A local will take you on a walking tour, pointing out all the prominent and hidden works of art in the city centre. The walk lasts 90 minutes and costs € 10 (children up to 16 free). You don’t need to book. > every Sunday at 11.00, look for the flag on the Neude greetingsfromutrecht.nl

CULTURAL SUNDAY
New Year’s Dip (Nieuwjaarsduik)
The start of a new year signals the traditional start to the Utrecht cultural calendar. It’s as cosy as a warm bath, so come and immerse yourself in a mix of previews, lectures, presentations, workshops, exhibitions and live performances. Once again, this year we are showcasing local up-and-coming makers. Talented musicians from the Dutch Pop Academy will be performing on the Rabo Open Stage in TivoliVredenburg, there are exhibitions in various galleries in town (such as Academiegalerie, EXbunker, Kunstliefde and Moira) and the day will be concluded with an actual urban dance battle in Winkel van Sinkel. > 13 January, various locations culturelezondagen.nl/english

e start our walk at Miffy square 1 . In the middle of this square is a bronze statue of the famous bunny, made by Dick Bruna’s son Marc. Cross the bridge and head towards Café Weerdzicht. Turn right. The water should now be on your right and you’ll see the 13th-century Weerdsluis 2 lock in the distance. Follow the bend in the footpath. Walk under the bridge a little further on and you’ll find yourself on Nieuwekade. Follow this street until it bends to the left. Until late 2015, this was the end of the canal, but nowadays you can take the footpath along the new section of the canal. The footpath turns into
a pavement, which you continue along until you reach TivoliVredenburg. Cross the road here. This is where you need an alternative route, because although they’re currently digging out the canal, you won’t actually be able to make a complete circuit along the water until 2020. After passing Restaurant Danel, turn left towards Vredenburg. Cross the square towards Lange Elisabethstraat, which turns into Steenstraat. Turn right into Mariastraat, which takes you to Mariaplaats, where you turn right immediately in front of the Conservatoire building. Walk straight ahead for about 150 metres until you

‘THIS BENCH IS MY FAVOURITE SPOT TO CONTEMPLATE LIFE’
Q&A WITH AGNES WEBER By Dieuwke de Boer
© Tyler Nix/UN
SPL A
Agnes Weber (23), originally from Austria, is studying Creative Business at Hogeschool Utrecht. She’s been living here for two and a half years, after working in the United States as an au pair. How did she end up here? ‘I stumbled upon Utrecht as I was randomly looking for a study in English. I had never heard of the city but my inner voice said: “Hey lady, you have to check this out!” It turned out to be a fantastic choice. Utrecht has this reputation of being the little sister of Amsterdam, but that doesn’t do it justice at all. My mission is to showcase the unique spirit of the city.’

Tranquillity spot
Versatile
‘If you’re looking for a really quiet and calm spot, I would recommend finding one specific bench looking out over the water, just across from the house on Billitonkade 9. We all live our lives at a dizzying speed, so it’s good to take a moment to let your mind wander once in a while. This bench is the perfect spot to do just that.’
‘I live in the Lombok district, which also happens to be my favourite part of town. It’s a very diverse neighbourhood and a perfect place to do your grocery shopping with all the fresh fruit and veg shops on Kanaalstraat. I also like going to Molen de Ster (Molenpark 3). It’s such a versatile place, because you can go there for live concerts, poem recitals, DJs, a cup of coffee or to pet the animals in the adjacent park.’
Second living room
15
‘There are many good coffee spots in town, but Rocking Chair (Willem van Noortstraat 88) definitely is my favourite. The vibe is great; it feels like a second living room. Working there for the last six months was a good springboard to try out my Dutch and practice some latte art at the same time. Also, the place oozes history. The building used to be a bank and the interior still features some original details: for instance, the former vault now is a kids corner.’

During the Flamenco Biennial, authentic flamenco and modern dance are alternated with intimate concerts. For example, budding young flamenco dancer Patricia Guerrero takes to the stage on 24 January, to show us what flamenco is all about. Sinister and macabre, with the odd flash of humour. This is the new film by director Lars von Trier. It’s about Jack, a hyper-intelligent man who has spent twelve years developing into a highly experienced serial killer. He sees every killing as a separate work of art and discusses his thoughts with the mysterious Verge. With the police on his heels, he starts to take more and more risks in his attempt to create the ultimate work of art. Featuring Matt Dillon, Uma Thurman and Bruno Ganz.
The Favourite It’s the early 18th century. England is at war with France. The fragile Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) is on the throne, but her poor health and regular outbursts mean that her good friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) is governing the country in her place. Sarah is also caring for Anne. When a new servant Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives, Sarah falls for her charms and takes Abigail under her wing. But when Sarah becomes preoccupied by the politics of war, Abigail starts to take an interest in the Queen. Rick ter Schuur and his girlfriend Floor launched a web shop last year. It was such a success that they decided to open a store in their beloved Twijnstraat. They sell attractive home accessories including bowls, design books, posters and cushions, many of them for under € 30. Ter Schuur: ‘A relative makes the cushions, and I design the posters. We aim to design half of the items on sale here ourselves. There are so many home accessories shops selling the same stuff that we thought we’d offer something completely different.’ atelierliving.nl

This one-stop-shop stocks clothing, accessories and shoes from well-known and lesser-known brands (including sustainable!). There’s even a hairdresser, so you can treat yourself to a completely new look. Oeben’s Mercatile 7 (Oudkerkhof 34) is a whole different story. Oeben’s Mercantile sells jeans (for the experts: including double indigo selvedge denim, hand-made on an oldfashioned loom), as well as classic suits, jackets, sunglasses, shoes and aftershave. It also stocks one-of-a-kind items from unknown brands and special collections by larger brands. If you aren’t keen on the big brands, then Cris 8 (Mariaplaats 3A) is the place for you. The shop sells shirts, shoes, suits, jeans and bags produced by small, mainly European manufacturers with fair production processes. The owner can THE STORE tell you the story behind STRONGLY all his brands and is happy RESEMBLES to advise you. De Rode Winkel 9 (Lange A MAN CAVE Elisabethstraat 13) is the place to be for jeans by brands such as Levi’s, Diesel, G-Star Raw, Denham and PME Legend. And not only that: the shop doubles as an exhibition space and bar, so you can look at some art works and have a drink while shopping for new clothes. DE HAAR CASTLE In the 1960s, this was the place where the international jet-set wanted to be invited. It was then owned by Baron Etienne van Zuylen van Nijevelt and Baroness Hélène de Rothschild. They ensured that this impressive castle had all the mod cons, such as central heating, electricity and a modern kitchen, all considered highly extravagant in those days. Famous guests included Roger Moore and Joan Collins. > Monday to Sunday, Kasteellaan 1 in Haarzuilens kasteeldehaar.nl/english

A CHAMPAÑERIA, JUST LIKE THE ONES YOU FIND IN BARCELONA, RECENTLY OPENED ITS DOORS
irst the proper wine bars. There are quite a few you can choose from. At VinVin 1 (Predikherenstraat 19) for example, they like to tell you the background to the wine you’re drinking. Where it comes from, which grapes are used, who produces it and what makes the flavour so unique. And don’t forget the cheese or salami to go with it. For something out of the ordinary, go to Zies 2 (Twijnstraat 58). They don’t just serve wines from well-known countries like Italy, Spain and France, but also lesser known wine producing countries such as Morocco, Portugal, Lebanon and Greece. If you fancy a more Italian style drink at the end of the day, try Verde Marrone 3 (Donkere Gaard 2) for a good glass of wine and a plateau of Italian cheese, charcuterie and bruschetta. The place exudes Italy: from the vibe in the bar to the delicious morsels on your plateau.

Something more sparkly is also possible: Los Amigos 4 (Voorstraat 56), a champañeria like the ones you find in Barcelona, recently opened its doors in Utrecht: a bar that serves good cava and authentic Spanish tapas. And to make things even better, the cava is low-priced because they’re in business with a cava house close to Barcelona. So you won’t be skint after an evening ‘relaxing’ (drinking!) here. Bar Cava 5 (Ganzenmarkt 12) is another place that’s all about - you’ve guessed it Spanish bubbly or cava. You can order a bottle or a glass. But if you prefer wine, you’ve come to the right place too. And you don’t need to move on if all that cava or wine is making you hungry; they have several delicious mixed plateaux on the menu.

January & February
Die tote Stadt Although Erich Korngold was Austria’s favourite composer between 1916 and 1933, his work isn’t played very often these days. Die tote Stadt is a somewhat alarming love story about Paul, who becomes ensconced in a fantasy world of obsession and delusion after losing his beloved Marie. The critics were lyrical after the première in 1920. They particularly praised the alternating, hypnotising musical score.
