MAG Utrecht — Jul/Aug 2019

Welcome to Utrecht Sunny summer days are perfect for a leisurely stroll in one of the city’s parks. The most popular are in the centre of town, but if you venture out a bit further you’ll find several parks that are bigger, greener and much more luscious. So borrow or hire a bike and go on our park sightseeing tour. Another good thing about being in Utrecht in summer, is the abundance of outdoor festivals, where you can enjoy music and theatre performances by local talent or sample the latest food and drink trends. If all the activity is making you hungry, we’ve found five places where you can either sit inside, or get a take-away to eat on the banks of the canal, in one of the parks, or on a quay on the waterside. If you fancy something a little more exclusive, be sure to check out the hidden gems in former country houses, convents and gardens in and around town. MAG Utrecht also features a calendar with up-todate information on all the exhibitions, festivals, movies and theatre performances that take place in July and August. We hope you have a splendid summer. Juliana park

The 18th-century country estate of Oud-Amelisweerd, just outside the city, now houses a pop-up museum. Hens, pigs & peacocks

Juliana park 1 in the Zuilen district is the oldest park in Utrecht. It was built in 1903 and one hundred years later, it’s still a popular place for local people to come and relax. Lie back in a lounger on the grass, but don’t be surprised if a hen suddenly steals your seat. They roam freely in this park. The other animals, including deer, pigs and peacocks, are kept safely in the animal enclosure. For ice-cream and smoothies, go to the Antje Drijver Pavilion in the park itself. The Sandwich Company 2 is within walking distance for delicious rolls and sandwiches. If you want to bike a bit further, you can be in the industrial Werkspoorkwartier district in five minutes, where you can try a local craft beer on the waterside terrace of Werkspoor bar De Leckere. 3

ENJOY THE LAST RAYS OF SUNSHINE ON THE GENTLY UNDULATING LAWNS

You’ll find Transwijk park 4 in the Kanaleneiland district of Utrecht. It’s a place where locals like to come for a BBQ in the summer and spend the evening enjoying the last rays of sunshine on the wide, gently undulating lawns of this park. Take a look in the Eilandsteede 5 urban garden, where you can pet the goats and sheep and buy honey from a local beekeeper. An Asian sushi and grill restaurant called ZINNIA 6 is located in the middle of this park. They also do great take-aways, which you can eat outside on the grass. But there are other places to eat and drink close by: De Klub restaurant 7 is just a five-minute bike ride from the park. Here, the dinner menu has a different theme every week. Right next door is the Kromme Haring brew pub 8 , with its enormous terrace where they serve their own beer with intriguing names like Rockfish and Dolphin’s Cry.

Daniëlle Gouman (24) calls herself the ‘ambassador for an enterprising Utrecht’. As an advisor for crowdfunding at Voor je Stadsie, a platform for new Utrecht-based initiatives, she helps people to realise their dreams, no matter how big or small. ‘Every day, I work with incredibly inspirational people. People who are passionate and enthusiastic about making the city even more attractive than it already is. Our projects often focus on vulnerable groups, like setting up a language café for newcomers to the Netherlands to learn Dutch while gaining experience in the catering trade, for example. Or a project which pairs refugees and asylum permit holders with local people to stop them feeling socially isolated. Or initiatives whereby people with dementia and people with a physical disability can practise a sport.’

Great vibe

Cosy side roads ‘I love wandering around my city. I walk along Oudegracht and Nieuwegracht two or three times a week. I think I like Nieuwegracht even more than Oudegracht. I walk through all those tiny, cosy side roads, like Vrouwjutten straat and A.B.C.-straat. I sometimes cut through to Rotsoord, a district with a distinct industrial vibe. You can sit and relax on a terrace, at Klein Berlijn (Helling 22), for example, or on the waterside at Taplokaal Gist (Helling 9).’

Films & trains ‘I’m a real film buff. I can go to the cinema whenever I want so you’ll often find me in the Louis Hartlooper Complex (Tolsteegbrug 1) or Springhaver (Springweg 50). The Railway Museum (Maliebaanstation 16) is another firm favourite. I take all

Berlin-style festival ‘I live in the city centre so I tend to stay inside the canal belt. I sometimes visit Berlijnplein in Leidsche Rijn, because they organise lots of fun events. I was at the Berliner Garten recently, a regular Berlin-style festival they hold there. And the Ping Pong Club (Concordiastraat 80) is still on my to-do list.’

‘Voorstraat is my home. I live opposite The Village Coffee & Music (Voorstraat 46), a coffee bar with a great vibe. The shops are good too, like PUHA (Voorstraat 48) and Sussies (Voorstraat 50). The last one is a good place for vintage clothing. I like to eat at Tiger Mama (Voorstraat 80). You don’t have to choose because they serve a standard ten-course menu with all kinds of Asian fish, meat and veggie dishes. De Bakkerswinkel (Wittevrouwenstraat 2) is another favourite haunt, where you can get delicious scones and bread pudding.’

MUSIC FROM NAPLES

UTRECHT EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL Centuries of occupation by the Greeks, Romans, the French House of Anjou and the Spanish community of Aragon, meant that Naples evolved into a city of survivors and world citizens. The musical landscape was also very diverse, thanks to church music, brotherhoods and charities and the popularity of song and dance in public life. More than enough inspiration for a packed programme at the Utrecht Early Music Festival, which promises an abundance of Mediaeval, Renaissance and Baroque music, often played by budding young musicians from the Netherlands and abroad.

ASSEMBLAGE ART

STUFF MATTERS American artist Jessica Stockholder (1959) has been making waves with her installations since the 1990s. She assembles all kinds of everyday objects, from umbrellas and cushions to stools, lamps and washing baskets, and transforms them into overwhelming, brightly coloured entities. On his latest album, Everlast’s voice is even more gravelly, but the relaxed vibe can still be heard in his music.

Falling is something we’d rather avoid. If you fall, you are vulnerable. In our society, we focus on improvement: everything must be better, further, faster, more. But falling is part of life. Water evaporates, rises and falls as rain; people learn by falling and getting up again, by trial and error. What would happen to creativity if we were too afraid to take a leap in the dark? This performance by Schweigman& and the reed quintet Calefax is a musical ode to falling, an opportunity to face our fears head-on.

Sometimes, nothing beats getting out of the blazing sun and spending an afternoon in a cool cinema. Green Book will be screened in Kinepolis on Friday afternoon, 5 July. This is a true story about the close friendship that developed between a concert pianist Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) and his ItalianAmerican bodyguard Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen). HAND-MADE CERAMICS & TEXTILES

By Quirine Reddingius

Stichting echtWaar is an Utrecht-based workshop where people with an occupational impairment make all kinds of ceramic and textile products. The workshop is run by Loes van der Heijden and Irma Heijnsdijk. They opened Stichting echtWaar in 2015, after the ceramics studio where they worked closed its doors. Their main aim is to create a safe working environment for people with occupational impairments to develop their talents. For over four years now, echtWaar has been producing handmade ceramic and textile products, making use of recyclable materials.

The basic principle at echtWaar is to focus on what people want to learn. Different people enjoy doing different things: some like sewing on the sewing machine, while others enjoy ceramics, weaving or a combination of everything. As each product is made using a range of techniques, everyone is involved in the manufacturing process. echtWaar also likes working together with local Utrecht businesses; they make shot glasses for the Rondje Utrecht liqueur taster series, and saucers that are perfect for under the Snellies Dom Tower candles. > You can visit the workshop on 2e Daalsedijk 8 on Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 16:00. echtwaar.nl

Many of the residents worked in the brewery or the cigar factory around the corner. Everyone knew each other and they all kept an eye on one another. And they knew how to party… The absolute highlight was the

neighbourhood party, for which residents put money aside throughout the year. De Zeven Steegjes parties lasted three whole days. and were renowned for being fun and raucous. THE IMPRESSIVE CHURCH ORGAN, THE PEWS ALONG THE WALL AND THE BALCONY: IT WOULD DIFFICULT NOT TO NOTICE THAT BUNK HOTEL USED TO BE A CHURCH. THIS NEW HOTEL IS A CROSS BETWEEN A HOTEL AND A HOSTEL. All photos by R. Schraven

ME AND MY POD

BUNK HOTEL

It’s not just somewhere to sleep, but also a place to chill, work, meet up with people and discover new work by up-andcoming artists, musicians and other local talent. When you walk in, you’d never guess that the hotel boasts 45 rooms. The clue is in the vaulted ceiling. The space above it has also been used for rooms, with the ‘most epic room’ situated just below the ridge. This is the only room

with a bath and a stunning view. If you don’t need much space, you could sleep in one of the 60 Japanese-style pods. They offer a bit more privacy than the standard bunkbeds you usually get in a hostel, because you can close the curtains to your pod. By staying at BUNK, you are also contributing to the Utrecht cultural scene: part of the profits from the hotel goes to a foundation that helps local artists to produce new work.
