Giselle Habraken mastered the art of candle-making in a candle studio in New York. On her return to Utrecht, she started her own label: Brandt. Big national and international literary names will talk about their latest novels at the International Literature Festival Utrecht (ILFU) Book Talks. On 9 September, the American author Colson Whitehead will be in Utrecht. This Pulitzer prize-winner wrote the international bestseller The Underground Railroad, a novel about slavery and Cora’s flight from a cotton plantation in the midnineteenth century. Q&A WITH RENSKE VERSLUIJS By Dieuwke de Boer
Designer Renske Versluijs (34) was born and bred in Utrecht. She works on her own collection of jewellery and accessories in her studio in the creative breeding ground Vechtclub XL. Her collection is not only on sale in Utrecht, but also as far away as Paris and London. ‘My collection comprises leather purses, belts, bracelets, cardholders and much more. The necklaces, earrings, brooches and wall hangers are made from porcelain and wood. My designs are minimalist, but striking. I source my materials in Europe, to make sure that they have been produced in a fair and honest way. And all my items are hand-made, either in the Netherlands or Portugal. Alongside my work as a designer, I advise creative entrepreneurs on how to present
and sell their products and organise Dutch Design stands at international trade shows. I also do photo shoots and organise all kinds of events for the Merwede area and Vechtclub XL, such as Winterwinkelen, the open-air cinema at our urban beach and coaching sessions. ‘I often eat at De Klub (Europalaan 2B), the restaurant that’s almost next-door to my studio. I’d recommend the vegetarian three- or four-course meal. Utrecht doesn’t have that many restaurants that serve really good vegetarian food.’
Themed party ‘I like small-scale festivals, like Klein New Orleans or Le Mini Who? The themed parties at TivoliVredenburg (Vredenburgkade 11) are fun too. My evenings often start in The Malt Vault (Oudegracht a/d Werf 54A), a whisky bar in a vaulted basement on Oudegracht. It’s a very friendly place, even if you don’t order a whisky. Definitely a place for whisky-lovers to try, though.’

The brand-new permanent exhibition entitled Utrecht begint hier! (Utrecht starts here!) will show you what makes this city so special. You can see how the characteristic wharfs were built, discover how Utrecht became a student city, experience the first edition of the popular Lowlands music festival (which was held in the Jaarbeurs), see how the water disappeared from the canals and later returned, bike past the city’s most resplendent spots and join the very first traffic jam in 1967, which led to a new phenomenon: roadside tourism. This exhibition teaches you about two utopian building projects from the 70s with a turbulent history: the Kanaleneiland district and Hoog Catharijne in the centre of town. Both projects were presented as the perfect solution to the problems facing Utrecht at the time. Kanaleneiland would solve the housing shortage and Hoog Catharijne the traffic problems. Unfortunately, within ten years, both projects had caused more problems than they had solved. His mother was killed in a bomb blast at the Metropolitan Museum of Art when he was just 13. The tragedy changed his life, leading to a compelling voyage of sorrow and guilt, selfdiscovery and redemption, and even love. EXPERIENCING INTERACTIVE MEDIA IS OFTEN SOMETHING YOU DO ON YOUR OWN
The Beast in the Jungle This film by the Dutch director Clara van Gool is based on a novel of the same name by Henry James. Set in a remote English country house, it revolves around the mysterious love story of John Marcher and May Bartram. John is convinced that something sinister will befall him during his life. The feeling is so real that it cripples him. May is the only person he trusts enough to tell, and they decide to wait for the moment together. But their love is doomed from the start.

At All Costs
You watch feature films in a comfy chair in a packed cinema, but experiencing interactive media is often something you do on your own. The NFF nominated ten virtual reality games and films, installations and multimedia productions for a Gouden Kalf award (the Dutch Oscar). You can watch (or experience) all ten at the free NFF Interactive Expo. In Eight, Mixed Reality allows you to track the life of a woman in reverse order: it starts when she’s seventy, then you see her at thirty-five and finally at eight. Die Fernweh Oper is a VR installation featuring an endless opera being sung by the 30-metre tall singer Astoria. She is singing just for you, about your ridiculous love for her.

You can’t escape photography. But how does this image culture affect the way we see ourselves and others? In a dynamic dance show with a jazzy soundtrack, choreographer Jasper van Luijk explores our addiction to the modern image culture. Life-size photos are fired into the audience, creating a unique perspective of the relationship between photographer and dancer. Who is in control of the photo that is taken? The photographer or the dancer?
Falling is something we’d rather avoid, because it makes us feel vulnerable. In our society, we focus on improvement: everything must be better, further, faster, more. But falling is part of life. People learn by falling and getting up again. What would happen to creativity if we were too afraid to take a leap in the dark? This performance is a musical ode to falling, an opportunity to face our fears head-on. > 20, 21 and 22 September, Stadsschouwburg Utrecht stadsschouwburg-utrecht.nl

Genres that are very different in some ways, but which definitely have a common thread. The line-up features famous and lesser-known artists from home and abroad, such as The Dustbowl Revival. This group of young, Californian musicians combines folk, bluegrass, soul, jump blues and New Orleans funk to create its own, unique sound. > 19 October, TivoliVredenburg ramblinroots.nl
Sasami The American Sasami Ashworth spent years playing with the garage rock band Cherry Glazerr, writing for Curtis Harding and Wild Nothing and composing music for films and advertisements. After a long, hard struggle, she finally found room for her own compositions. And they were worth waiting for: Sasami is a sincere, personal debut album, on which Sasami plays many of the instruments herself, including the French horn. > 21 September, EKKO ekko.nl

New music from South Korea. Traditional Korean instruments like the haegeum, the piri and the geomungo, are artistically combined with electric guitars and electronics. The final result: traditional Korean music with a large portion of heavy post-rock/noise. Jambinai already has a substantial fan base in South Korea, so it’s time to conquer the rest of the world. > 13 October, De Helling dehelling.nl

HANDS UP! (3+)
Lejo is the famous puppet with the eyes from Sesame Street. He comes on stage accompanied by a group of vibrant friends: a cow that has difficulty eating, a barking bulldog and a clumsy tap dancer. And can you see the flapping birds, the sweet children’s choir and the elegant octopus floating around the theatre? You could almost forget that you’re actually watching bare hands and wooden eyes. At the end of this silent performance, the kids can craft their own Lejo eyes. > 22 and 23 October, Theater Kikker theaterkikker.nl

Josje loves cars, Anton likes to dress up as Cinderella, Kim is a feisty fighter and cry-baby Seth is secretly in love with Frank. Watching them play hide-and-seek, the audience gradually realises that they don’t want to be found because they are scared of being ridiculed or bullied. This funny but moving show, which combines dance with sport and games, is about wanting to be accepted. Even when you’re different from the rest.
PHYSICAL & VISUAL COMEDY
DE ROVERS (3+)
Three grim robbers live in a world of darkness, devoid of any colour. But when they themselves are robbed, they decide they’ve had enough. The robbers are determined to rediscover what they have lost and do all they can to add a little colour to everyone’s lives. Inspired by cartoons, action films and games, this production uses every trick in the book to create a visual spectacle with infectious live music. > 15 September, Podium Hoge Woerd (Leidsche Rijn) podiumhogewoerd.nl

CULTURE
An introduction to theatre for toddlers and tiny tots. In the production Geel (2+), a yellow girl and a yellow musician take our youngest audience on a voyage of mime, live music and animations through a yellow world. Until they encounter a blue girl with a blue suitcase...that’s not right! But then they discover that if you mix yellow with blue, you get green and you can start to create a world full of colour. And the slapstick production Het Grote Kleurenballet (4+) literally brings abstract, visual art to life. There also is a theatre playground where children can discover, play and build.

LUCAS VAN HAPERT
Cityscape screen prints LUCAS VAN HAPERT IS A GRAPHIC DESIGNER, KNOWN FOR HIS SCREEN PRINTS OF ICONIC LOCATIONS IN UTRECHT. HIS PRINTS HAVE PROVEN TO BE VERY POPULAR, NOT JUST WITH VISITORS BUT ALSO WITH LOCALS.
Lucas started experimenting with screen printing while studying at the HKU University of the Arts on Ina Boudier Bakkerlaan. This course was the reason for him moving to Utrecht fourteen years ago, and the city continues to inspire much of his work. ‘I made the small screen print of the Dom Tower with the circle behind it during my course. The print proved popular so I kept printing it.’ Interested to see what his prints would look like on textile, Lucas also added Dom Tower socks to his collection. When he became a father, he also decided to make baby socks. Lucas enjoys wandering around Utrecht and drawing inspiration for his work. He tries to concentrate on new buildings such as TivoliVredenburg, and not just the ‘classics’ such as the townhall and the Dom Tower. For the past four years, Lucas’ own office has occupied a special place in Utrecht: he works in the former prison on Wolvenplein, a unique spot where new and old creative businesses work together under one roof.

MOZART WAS HERE
SCHILLER THEATRE ‘PLACE ROYAL’ When 10-year-old Mozart was on tour with his father and sister in 1766, he spent a few days at the famous Plaets-Royale rooming house on Minrebroederstraat. In fact, he practised the harpsichord in preparation for his concert in the concert hall on Vreeburg on the very spot where the Schiller Theatre now stands. Behind the 19th-century fa ade of the current, intimate theatre, you’ll find a 17th-century house with wooden flooring and stucco ceilings. > Minrebroederstraat 11 1
BATHHOUSE A hundred years ago, workers’ houses had no sanitary facilities, so people visited public baths like this one in the Wittevrouwen district for their weekly wash. It is also the place where generations of Utrecht locals learned to swim. Jonas Ingenohl designed the sober outside of the bathhouse, while his colleague Berlage gave the interior an Art Nouveau feel. The historic entrance, swimming clock and grandstand have survived to this day. Ozebi has been used as a snooker and laser centre since 1989. > Biltstraat 4

OOGLIJDERSGASTHUIS
Unfortunately, the Utrecht-based physiologist and ophthalmologist Franciscus Cornelis Donders died before the opening of his Ooglijdersgasthuis eye hospital in 1895. The building was designed by Dirk Kruyf, who drew inspiration from the then-trendy Revivalists and fellow-architect Pierre Cuypers. Amsterdam Central Station and the Rijksmuseum feature the same kind of fa ade. The decorative wrought ironwork, stainedglass windows and brightly coloured clockface on the left-hand tower of the hospital are particularly spectacular. > F.C. Dondersstraat 65

This building is commonly referred to as the ‘inkpot’. Hardly surprising, as it does actually resemble a huge inkpot. It was built from 22 million bricks and 4,000 m³ of oak wood. To ensure a good supply of materials, the Dutch railways bought up two brickworks, a timber company, three ships and a forest in Limburg. A visit to the Inktpot, which is normally closed to the public, reveals many of the original elements from 1918-1921, such as the monumental staircase, the Art Deco clocks in the offices and the stained glass upstairs in the tower. Part of the interior is built from glazed bricks. The intriguing UFO placed on the roof in 1999 now forms an integral part of the building.
EXPLORE
The imposing Anatomiegebouw dating from 1921 was once part of the Utrecht Veterinary School. The architect was Joseph Crouwel, also known for designing the main post office in Neude. He designed the building in the style of the Amsterdam School. The tuff animal heads incorporated into the exterior and interior are striking, but the main ‘attractions’ are the anatomical theatre and the dissecting room in the hemispherical extension on the north side, where the light and temperature are perfect for working with cadavers. After the Faculty of Veterinary Science moved to De Uithof in 1988, the building fell into disrepair until it was restored to its former glory by Utrecht architect Marcel Martensen, and reopened last year.

Hardebollenstraat: a brief history
Until 2013, this narrow street was best-known for the red lights that illuminated the prostitutes behind the windows after dark. It was a mini-version of the Amsterdam red light district. Six years ago, the municipality withdrew the operators’ licences and the brothels were closed. The buildings underwent a metamorphosis and now accommodate all kinds of tasteful, creative initiatives.

Once you’re through the door, you’ll understand the unique concept that beer collector Fred is selling: you can order draught beer and have it poured into a can. The cans are then sealed so that you can drink them later. The can labels were inspired by the history of Hardebollenstraat. The shop doesn’t have a basic range as it gets twenty new beers and a new draught beer every week.

20 cents The final section of the concourse at Utrecht Central station was recently opened. It’s now difficult to imagine that this hyper-modern public transport hub was once a tiny local station. It had elegant waiting rooms where passengers could order a meal or a drink from one of the smartly dressed waiters. There was
also a delightful outdoor area, where not only train passengers, but also local people could be found enjoying a 20 cent-glass of lemonade, wine or beer on warm summer days. > In collaboration with Het Utrechts Archief Expo. Visit them at Hamburgerstraat 28. hetutrechtsarchief.nl/english

Film concert: Amadeus
47
September & October
It did seem a little ambitious: a three-hour film about a classical composer. But Miloš Forman’s film Amadeus (1984), about the final years of Mozart’s life, was a box office hit. The soundtrack with Mozart’s Requiem in the leading role was also a huge success. This film concert is a unique opportunity for lovers of film and music: sit back and watch Amadeus on a giant screen while listening to the Residentie Orkest playing the music live.

Good news! On 1 October, the International Welcome Centre Utrecht Region (IWCUR) will open its doors on the second floor of the Stadskantoor (Utrecht municipal offices). International newcomers and residents of Utrecht can visit the ‘expat’ centre five days a week. The IWCUR-staff will assist you with all your questions and paperwork regarding your move to the Utrecht Region, including formalities with the municipality and the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND). The IWCUR also provides information about housing, education, healthcare and more. You can also get your copy of MAG Utrecht here. > from 1 October, Stadskantoor (Stadsplateau 1) welcome.utrechtregion.com

HOTEL MEETS FASHION
COZY PILLOW
Next time? YOU CAN’T GET MUCH CLOSER TO THE CITY CENTRE THAN THIS BRAND-NEW BOUTIQUE HOTEL, LOCATED ABOVE THE FRED. FASHION STORE ON STEENWEG.
The FRED. staff double up as caretaker/receptionists for Cozy Pillow, so you can check in at the bar in the back of the shop (and perhaps do some shopping?). The hotel has three floors with two rooms on each, all decorated with a unique Utrecht vibe featuring alleyways, canals and the Dom Tower. You’ll also notice authentic details in the surprisingly spacious rooms, including wooden beams, stone walls and cosy nooks and crannies.
