Utrecht Botanic Gardens

March & April

Spring is in the air, so Utrecht Botanic Gardens are again open to the public. The gardens, which are among the oldest university gardens in the Netherlands, are located in the heart of the Utrecht Science Park and around the nineteenth-century Fort Hoofddijk. They are home to some of the world’s most beautiful plants and flowers, from rock garden plants and medicinal flowers to orchids and other tropical and subtropical plants. Tip: buy a packed lunch from the Botanica café and have a picnic on the grass. > from 1 March, Utrecht Botanic Gardens uu.nl/en/utrecht-botanic-gardens

Red velvet pancakes, unicorn cupcakes and mimosa’s, combined with golden mirrors, a plush pink sofa and marble tables: Frenchie Café undoubtedly is the most Instagrammable place in town. For those who don’t have a sweet tooth: the ‘all-day brunch café’ also serves hearty dishes, such as Eggs Benedict, ‘mancakes’ (pancake with bacon, cheddar, onion and maple syrup) and smoked salmon on toast, all possible with a side of parmesantruffle fries. > Lange Nieuwstraat 21 frenchiecafe.nl

Skyscraper Whale

> The Skyscraper Whale will stay in the canal near TivoliVredenburg until the summer

© Carsten van Rossen

You’ve probably already seen the so-called Skyscraper, an eleven-metre-high object emerging from the water at TivoliVredenburg. This enormous plastic whale is made from five tons of waste fished out of the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii. The animal serves as a statement against the huge volumes of plastic waste polluting the world’s rivers, seas and oceans. Utrecht University brought the animal to Utrecht and is organising events and lectures to draw attention to this topic.

Let’s go

West

ON SUNDAY 14 APRIL, CULTURAL SUNDAYS ARRIVES IN UTRECHT-WEST, BUT THIS PART OF TOWN IS WORTH A VISIT ON OTHER DAYS TOO. SO JUMP ONTO A BIKE AND ‘GO WEST’! By Dieuwke de Boer

T

he west of Utrecht covers quite a big area. We’ve selected a few highlights so that you’re not on your bike all day. The route starts on Westplein, where you bike into Kanaalstraat with the Ulu mosque on your right. This lively street with its delis, bakeries and local shops is the beating heart of the multi-culti district Lombok. Our first destination is Kopi Susu 1 , on the corner of Kanaalstraat and J.P. Coenstraat. If you need a break already, just wander into the café. It’s a real local meeting place where they serve coffee with Indonesian spekkoek, and host a range of cultural activities such as exhibitions, live music and free workshops. Continue biking along Kanaalstraat. After the bridge, the road turns into Laan van Nieuw Guinea. Turn left onto Groeneweg and cross the water (with a few bends). You’ll now see a fine

example of industrial heritage that has been given a new lease of life. From 1908 until the start of this century, the Cereol factory was used to extract oil first from linseed and then from soya. It is now home to a theatre, library and restaurant known as Buurten in de Fabriek 2 , a popular spot among locals. If you fancy a change from biking, take a walk through the green Park Oog in Al, where you’ll find an enclosure with deer. And the old country house close to the banks of the Leidsche Rijn is a great place for a breather. It’s called Landhuis in de Stad 3 . Time to get back on your bike; we’ve still got a long way to go! Bike onto Kanaalweg, keeping the water to your right. The route takes you past houseboats in all shapes and sizes. When you see a large bridge, turn right across it and continue along Spinozaweg, Thomas à Kempisweg and Cartesiusweg. You are now in

Visit De Nijverheid 4 , for example, a ‘cultural haven’ with studios for local artists, an exhibition space in a boat that used to house a brothel and a bar with a waterside terrace. So how do you get back? We’ll come to that later. First, it’s time for a drink and something to eat. You might not think so, but there are plenty of places to eat in this part of town. regularly so pop in and see what’s on draught this week. You can eat there too: the menu is fully vegan and organic and new dishes appear every month. A bit further on, you’ll find Werkspoorcafé De Leckere 6 , which serves beers from another Utrecht brewery. This brew pub has an industrial look and sells its own ‘home brews’ as well as beers brewed by guest breweries. Treat yourself to a platter of assorted cheese, sausage and ham with your to drink, and if it’s nice outside, find yourself a table on the terrace on the banks of the Amsterdam-Rijn canal. And you still don’t have to go home yet. Check out the programme at dB’s pop podium 7 for an evening of musical entertainment. Even if there’s nothing going on, you can still enjoy another beer here. Q&A WITH QENDRESA REXHEPI

© Matthijs Bettman

By Dieuwke de Boer

Boulderhal Sterk Karibu Café

Qendresa Rexhepi (24), who lived in Germany most of her life, moved to Utrecht two and a half years ago to study Creative Business at Hogeschool Utrecht. ‘My parents immigrated from Kosovo to Germany, now 25 years ago. I was born in a refugee camp, where we lived for almost six years. The important lesson I have learnt is that the most essential thing in life is human affection, regardless of where you were raised.’ Qendresa feels at home in Utrecht. ‘I like to observe everything that happens in the street: how people move, and how they interact. I absorb all the tiny details and sounds. In these rapidly changing times, we sometimes forget to take our time to look around and be aware of all the amazing things surrounding us.’

Mar/Apr 2019 — MAG Utrecht

‘I live in Lombok, which also happens to be my favourite neighbourhood. There always seems to be a new surprise around the corner, waiting to be discovered. Molen de Ster (Molenpark 3) is one of my go-to places. It’s a beautiful mill in a tranquil park, where you can spot the laziest pigs ever. I don’t think I have ever seen them move. The terrace of Café Kanaalzicht (Keulsekade 23) is an excellent spot for drinking a cold beer whilst watching the world go by.’

Up-and-coming

‘CYCLING THROUGH THE CITY WHILE LISTENING TO SOME NICE TUNES IS A GREAT WAY TO DISCOVER NEW NEIGHBOURHOODS’

Take a break ‘Boulderhal Sterk (Koningin Wilhelminalaan 4) is like a small community: you can climb the wall on your own, but you’re always next to someone else. This makes it an excellent place to start a conversation. So it’s not only good for your health, but also great to meet new people.’

‘You probably wouldn’t expect it at first, but there’s lots to do in the area next to Zuilen train station. For example, you can watch free movies - often with English subtitles - at Filmcafé (CABRondom 90A). Afterwards, you can stick around for drinks and dancing.’

Plant-based ‘I like going to Karibu Café (Oudenoord 330) for coffee and breakfast. It’s located in one of the buildings that used to house Utrecht University of Applied Sciences. It now affords workplaces for small start-ups. The café is also a good place if you like playing boardgames. Another great spot is Waku Waku (formerly called SNCKBR, Vredenburg 28), the first 100% vegan restaurant in Utrecht.’

With Thirty030, Utrecht shows its young, creative side: 30 enthusiastic ambassadors under the age of 30 will be representing the city together. thirty030.nl

CITY MUSEUM The glorious sixteenthcentury building that houses the Stadsmuseum is a gem in itself: one of the showpieces is the ‘Vroedschapszaal’, a magnificent room with seventeenth-century wood carvings, original fireplace and stained-glass windows. The museum collects work by artists who have lived and/or worked in Woerden. The painting by the seventeenth-century landscape artist Herman van Swanevelt (ca. 16031655), a renowned painter from the Dutch Golden Age, is a prime example. > every Tuesday to Sunday, Kerkplein 6 stadsmuseumwoerden.nl

Neerlandiakade 2B In the past, they made nails, iron hinges & locks and gauze here, then it became a rag & bone merchant, and from 2002, the Neerlandia factory on the bank of the Vaartsche Rijn was left empty and derelict. Last year, this fine example of industrial heritage dating back to 1914 was given a complete overhaul: even the old chimney was restored to its former glory. At the foot, you’ll find Op Zuid, a New York-style bistro & bar serving pizzas from their own wood-fired oven, meat from the spit and over fifty different beers, fifteen on draught. THROWBACK

© F. F. van der Werf, Collection Het Utrechts Archief

Where are the horses? What’s the best way to discover a city like Utrecht? Before 1900, you jumped onto the horse-drawn tram and did a circuit. In the early 20th century, this was replaced by a new invention: the electric tram. This is a picture of one on Mariaplaats, on its way to the Dom Tower. Passengers took a long time getting used to them. Where was the front and where was the back? You couldn’t tell without the horse. And people were afraid of electric shocks. In addition, this was the first tram with fixed stops: you couldn’t just jump off when you felt like it. > In collaboration with The Utrecht Archives. Visit them at Hamburgerstraat 28.

WHETHER YOU PLAN TO SPEND ONE NIGHT OR SIX MONTHS IN UTRECHT, YOU’RE AT THE RIGHT ADDRESS AT 2L DE BLEND. HERE, YOU’LL FIND PEACE AND QUIET BECAUSE THIS ‘APARTHOTEL’ IS JUST SIX MINUTES FROM THE CENTRE, ON THE AMSTERDAM-RIJN CANAL.

CUP A JOE

2L DE BLEND The aparthotel is in the former head offices of the Douwe Egberts coffee producer, next to the spot where the beans are still roasted. It has over seventy suites and studios, all with their own bathroom and fully equipped kitchen to give you complete privacy. If you

don’t feel like cooking yourself, just come to the ground-floor Mr Black and the White Ox restaurant for a bite to eat, and a nice cup of coffee (obviously!). > 2L De Blend Vleutensevaart 100 2ldeblend.nl
