Ukraine floods 112.international
Heavy rain on 22-24 Juin in the Ukraine resulted in the most destructive floods in 100 years. 3 people died in the western Verhovyna District and more than 2,500 people had to be evacuated. The western region was the most ruined, with nearly 14,450 houses flooded, roads damaged, washed away bridges and destroyed power lines and dams. Due to the impact on infrastructures and displaced people, Ukraine requested international assistance. On 25 July, the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) was activated due to the request. Sweden, Denmark, Italy and Slovakia offered and delivered help to the Ukraine. Beside in-kind assistance like tents and rescue equipment, the Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC) produced seven satellite maps of the affected area to support the rescue operations. In California, firefighters had to rescue a dog which was found trapped in a drain pipe on the Santa Barbara campus of the University of California. The 2-year-old canine named Sophie had been missing for about a month already, when she was found at the University. The rescuers believe that she had been trapped for at least 3 days in the pipe. Another animal rescue operation occurred on the 8 July in Sussex / Britain, where a horse was stranded in muddy water. The horse called Millie had sunk up to its shoulder, so it could not free itself out of this awkward predicament. Rescuers from the west Sussex fire and rescue services used a harness to lift Millie back to safety. Pour en savoir plus : www.news.leportale.com / www.upi.com
