Maleny Community celebrated Australia Day on January 26th

Just got to love an Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony!

Whilst Australia Day is an opportunity to celebrate everything we've built together and be optimistic for the future we can shape together it is known as the landing of the First Fleet at Port Jackson on January 26, when in 1788 Captain Arthur Phillip and a convoy of 11 ships carrying 1500 passengers, including 700 prisoners, came to Australia.

Officially Australia Day celebrations start by honouring Australia’s 60,000-year history, including the acknowledgment of the traditional custodians and First Nation Elders as original owners of the land.

To kick the day off to a good start was the Maleny famous APEX Club Aussie Breakfast

Local Federal Member of Parliament, Mr. Andrew Wallace welcomed 25 new Aussies from nine different nations to the Maleny community. This included a young Karen Hooshmandi who now attends the Mountain Creek State High School but who came to Australia from Iran. He is one who has well and truly hit the ground running as he is off to Europe this April having won the Premier’s ANZAC Day Award.

The Premier's Anzac Prize is an annual award for students and teachers that offers an exciting opportunity to delve further into the understanding of the Anzac legacy. It is proudly presented in partnership with RSL Queensland and with the support of the State Library of Queensland.

Their journey includes honing research skills at the 3-day Young Historians Workshop in Brisbane and taking their historical discoveries back home to inspire local primary school students. And finally, they will travel to Europe to visit sites of World War I significance in London, Paris, northern France and Belgium— places where the echoes of Anzac courage and sacrifice still resonate.

Maleny Paint Supplies

Australian Owned and made brands of Ultra-Premium paints “Proper treatment of surfaces before painting” https://www.norglass.com.au

When painting new surfaces its is important to prepare the surface properly to get a great looking result and prevent problems in the future.

Aluminium: Painting aluminium can require more preparation and care than other surfaces , , due to two factors.

1. In the extruding process of aluminium, a rolling oil is used as a lubricant which remains on the surface long after the finished product is put into use. This has to be removed before painting can commence otherwise the paint will not adhere properly.

2. Because the metal is non-absorbent the adhesion of paint can only be mechanical (sitting on top of the metal). Therefore, any form of condensation or contamination will reduce adhesion and result in failure of the paint system.

On unpainted new aluminium the first step to a successful paint finish is the cleaning and degreasing of the metal.

With an unused paint brush, apply a brushed coat of NORGLASS METAL ETCH CLEANER (phosphoric acid based) over the metal surfaces and allow the acid to react for 15 minutes. Do not leave METAL ETCH CLEANER more than 15 minutes before removal.

Hose off thoroughly and allow to dry. Force dry areas along welded seams, corners or rivets with a hot air blower or hair dryer

On large areas, do small sections that can be treated and washed off within the 15 minute time frame.

On previously painted surfaces, iIf the paint condition is generally poor remove it all by Soda blasting, or using NORGLASS ORANGE-PEEL paint stripper and prepare as above.

Alternatively degrease the surface by vigorously scrubbing with a domestic cream cleanser and nylon brush. Hose off and allow tothoroughly dry.

Next abrade the surface with 220 grade sandpaper by orbital sander, or by hand using a cork block . If the latter method is used, wear a pair of fabric gardening gloves to prevent skin contact with metal. Remove all loose and flaking paint. Dust off or vacuum the surface, apply NORGLASS SHIPSHAPE PRIMER UNDERCOAT.

NORGLASS SHIPSHAPE PRIMER UNDERCOAT is a 2 pack Epoxy coating with excellent adhesive properties as well as filling characteristics.

Because of its high resin loading, SHIPSHAPE eliminates the need to etch-prime the surface and provides an excellent base for single or 2 pack finish paints.

SHIPSHAPE can be applied by brush, roller or spray and produces a satin finish to easily highlight surface defects. On broad areas, application by a Mohair or Microfibre roller (4mm nap) will give the best results. Thinning of Shipshape is not recommended.

Because SHIPSHAPE is constructed with higher resin loadings than other paints, paint runs are more likely to occur if applied too heavily, so care should be taken.

What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets?

We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under five dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation.

Profits from the sale of this toilet paper is used our donation could go to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions

Juvenile Crime

“There is now no one easy fix”

A 91 year old Queensland grandmother’s attacked after she said she had "ran into the man in her hallway" after returning from putting out the rubbish.”

The male intruder took the grandmother’s purse and most of her jewellery, which included an engagement ring from her late husband.

The intruder was seen on security CCTV. The offender cut through the grandmother’s screen door. She said what happened had made her fearful in her own home where she lives alone.

It appears that in this day and age there is no respect for others, that included 91 year old grandmothers.

Where will it all end?

Truthful Jones says And he swears that it 100% true - No Bulls##t”

Truthful went home to Ireland to visit his relatives. Whilst there he went to the local bar to hav a Guinness and he watched and listened as another person entered the bar and sat next to the only other patron.

The new arrival asks if he could buy the original man there a drink. "Why of course is the reply.

The first man then asks: “Where are you from?"

"I'm from Ireland," replies the second man.

The first man responds: "You don't say, I'm from Ireland too! Let's have another round to Ireland."

"Of Course," replies the second man.

Curious, the first man then asks: “ Where in Ireland are you from?"

"Dublin," comes the reply.

"I can't believe it," says the first man. "I'm from Dublin too! Let's have another drink to Dublin.”

"Of course," replies the second man.

Curiosity again strikes and the first man asks: “What school did you go to?"

"Saint Mary's," replies the second man. "I graduated in '62."

"This is unbelievable!" the first man says. "I went to Saint Mary's and I graduated in '62, too!”

About that time in comes one of the regulars and sits down at the bar. "What's been going on?" he asks the bartender.

“Nothing much," replies the bartender. "The O'Malley twins are drunk again."

What is a Guarantee?

With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny

A guarantee will provide that should a borrower be unable for any reason to make the loan repayments, the guarantor will make those payments.

So before deciding to become a guarantor, you should be confident that the borrower can meet the loan repayments now and, in the future, and that you are comfortable with your relationship with the borrower. You should also ensure that you are in a financial position to cover the loan repayments if at any time the borrower cannot meet the repayments.

This is critical, particularly if you are securing the guarantee with property. This could restrict your ability to borrow funds in the future tying up equity you hold in your property until the loan is repaid in full.

Guarantees can be for fixed amounts or what are termed “all monies”.

A guarantee for a fixed amount provides far more certainty compared to an all monies guarantee, and the guarantee should clearly state the exact amount of money you will owe in the worst case scenario that the borrower is unable to repay the loan.

Did you Know?

February14th is Valentines Day.

- what do you know about it?

The history of Valentine's Day—and the story of its patron saint—is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite?

At the end of the 5th century Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine’s Day. It was born out of the the pagan celebration of Lupercalia.
