Jack hammer or NOT
Whilst many people wished that the population in Maleny had stayed at the 1970’s level and the town remained as a rural country town with no disadvantages, that was never going to happen.

(Continued from Page 1)
THE establishment of the Enclave Estate on what previously was the Hopper Family dairy farm off Bunya Street, Maleny has brought about a property development at an ever increasing pace as the estate is to be developed in five stages.
At the present time construction is well underway on stage 2 with stage one being finalised and houses being built, some have been finished and families already moved in.
A group of members of the Maleny community have become very vocal about the constant hammering caused be having to break copious amounts of basalt rock so that essential services can be provided for the new estate. Maleny resident Steven Thompson is the spokesperson on behalf of nearby residents who maybe too afraid to speak up for themselves.
There area where Maleny is situated has large areas of surface level hard basalt rock through which service infrastructure has to be delivered.. Basalt is a hard, black volcanic rock. There are rock breaker silencer blankets which delivers a noise reduction of up to 10dB.
Long termed Division 5 Councillor for the Sunshine Coast Council, Winston Johnston, said he had only received two official complaints about the noise.
This noise is constant and has been going on for many months and the vocal group is becoming roused by the continuing noise and have been using social media to broadcast their feelings.
Unfortunately, Maleny has a reputation for being antdevelopment and protests against any major development that takes place. Take for instance the opposition to the establishment of a Woolworths store on the banks o0f Obi Creek and the recently constructed fuel station on the corner of Cudgerie Street and Lawyer Street. Both these establishments have traded very well, in spite of warnings that certain members of the community “Won’t Shop There”.
Inquiries of the contractors, Shadforth Constructions reveal that the rock breaking should be finalised by the end o January 2025, weather permitting.

Gregson and Weight Christmas Memorial Service 2024
Each year Gregson and Weight Funerals of Caloundra holds a Christmas Memorial Service whereby those who have lost friends and relatives during the year can gather and join with the departed for a Christmas message. This service is not a religious based service, merely a time to re remember and commune with departed friends and relatives.
The significance of the Christmas tree is that relatives place a bauble, including a message or photo for the departed and as each does the tree is decoded for the coming Christmas period. The tree stays in the chapel for the duration of that time.
People often return during quiet times to reflect.
During the evening the prose printed to right was emotionally read out and it summed up the process of life very succinctly.
Those who attended the service saw the service in different ways, some saw it as a happy time to once again connect with a happier past whilst others had still not got
The Train of Life
By Vincent Moore
Life is like a journey on a train, with its stations, change of routes, differing scenes, and accidents!
At birth we boarded the train and met our parents, and we believed they would always travel at our side.
However, at some station down the line our parents stepped off, leaving the train and us alone to continue on our own.
As time passed, other people boarded the train;
And they were significant: siblings, friends, children, and even the Love of our life.
Many will step down and leave a permanent vacuum. Others will go so unnoticed that we didn’t realise that they had vacated their seats.
This train ride will be full of joy, sorrow, fantasy, expectations, hellos, goodbyes, and farewells.
Success consists of having a good relationship with all the passengers … requiring that we give the best of ourselves.
The mystery to everyone is: we don’t know at which station that we ourselves will be asked to step off. So we must live in the best way – love, forgive, and offer the best of whom we are.
It is important to do this, because when the time comes for us to exit, leaving our seat empty, we should leave behind beautiful memories for those who will continue riding the train of life without us.
I wish you a joyful journey for the remaining years on your train of life. Reap success, give lots of love, and be happy. More

“Refurbishing Fibreglass Shower Floors”
https://www.norglass.com.au
It is possible to give your tired looking fibreglass shower floor a new fresh look much cheaper than replacing it!
This area contains the same problems as repainting a bath. After years of continuous use, body fats, oils and soaps become embedded into the surface which is now quite porous due to aging of the fibreglass matrix.
Removal of these contaminates can cause a problem with adhesion unless the preparation is done with diligence. Secondly, the selection of paint is also important. All single pack paints (or clears) are air dried and are only water resistant, not waterproof. If they are used, the continuous wetting, lack of ventilation, steam etc. will cause the paints to soften and breakdown. Also they will allow mould to develop and adhere with comparative ease. Using aggressive cleaning agents will only exacerbate the problem.
Therefore, our recommendation is to use NORTHANE, which is one of the few on the market that is totally waterproof in the cured film. NORTHANE will not allow bacterial matter into the cured paint, making it perfectly safe for eating surfaces, laboratory bench tops, fish ponds and so on.
Now to the preparation.
Apply a good domestic cleaning agent, like JIF. Wet the surface and squirt it on, and scrub vigorously with a stiff nylon brush. Rinse off and repeat this process at least 2 more times.
Allow to dry, and lightly sand with a medium grit sandpaper around a cork block. If the whole shower area is to be done follow the same preparation all over.
Next, vacuum up the sanded dust, so that the loose particles are not clogging up the porous pores, and mask up all fittings and edges. If only the base is to be done, mask up an area about 150mm (6 inches) up from the floor.
Clean with Norclean-Plus on a paper towel just prior to painting to remove and remaining contaminants.
Prime using SHIPSHAPE PRIMER UNDERCOAT, let it cure for 24 hours, lightly sand, clean with NORCLEAN PLUS and then you can apply the NORTHANE.
Colour Selection
NORTHANE coverage is approximately 5 sq. metrs per mixed 500 ml pack, and if putting white over a white (or off-white background) then one coat will be sufficient.
However if a contrasting colour is chosen, 2 coats may be required. NORTHANE comes in 16 standard colours plus black and white. Application
If doing the walls as well, use a good quality mohair paint roller (4mm nap), and wear socks (not bare feet) because the body oils from the soles will reduce the adhesion.
Where only the base is to be coated, use a 75mm (3 inch) brush. Prior to mixing the paint, have on hand, a flat piece of wood or steel trowel and cotton gloves.
If a non slip area is required: Tape up the desired area with a masking tape. Clean with NORCLEANPLUS. Open the NORTHANE base only and add NORGLASS FLATTENING AGENT, 25g per litre, then add NORGLASS ANTI-SLIP AGENT at 50g per litre. Once they have been thoroughly integrated together add the Northane Hardener and stir. Wait 10 minutes then apply.
The finished result will be a textured uniform nonslip surface. The reason for this may not seem obvious, but if just left as a smooth finish the surface will be as slippery as a skating rink, when wet.

“New engineered stone bench tops no longer being installed”
he Australian Government announced a ban on engineered stone and the new rules come into effect on July 1st, 2024
The ban came about as a result of an inquiry that found the rates of silicosis and silica-related diseases have “risen substantially in recent years,
with a disproportionate number of diagnoses in engineered stone workers”.
Silicosis is caused, similarly as asbestos by inhaling silica dust released from engineered stone during the cutting, grinding and polishing phases.
Never fear though there are a number of excellent replacement materials.
Traditionally, roads are also very busy on the day that students actually return to school. School returns for 2025 on January 28th.. This means even busier than normal.. Extra care and attention is needed to ensure a safe area around school drop off points.
.There will be many young students who will be attending school for the first time and they will be excited. In this excited state it is easy for them to forget what they have been taught about road safety. In 2024 302 people have lost their lives on our roads this year. Don’t become a 2025 statistic.
Don’t forget that road safety is everyone’s responsibility.
Need a Roadworthy Certificate?
Maleny Service Centre have a Licenced Roadworthy Inspector on the premises and we know only too well what it takes to make your vehicle safe and roadworthy.
All vehicles (including trucks, motorbikes and trailers) must have a Safety or Roadworthy Certificate (RWC) if being sold, registered for the first time or being re-registered in Queensland. Registered Vehicles cannot be solid without a RWC.
An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions
Smart Meters
“Just
how smart are these meters?”
Recently an electrician arrived at a residence in Bunya Street, Maleny and advised that he was cutting off the power to that house for a “short period”. What for he was asked and he replied that he was to install a “smart meter” in place of the meter already in use. The original meter was still working and no application had been made by the home owner for a replacement.
Every house in the area was about to have a smart meter installed. All households and businesses will have one by 2030. Smart meters enable the support of the integration of zero or low emissions technologies. In Queensland, demand tariffs have become the default plan after the installation of a smart meter.
A University of Queensland spokesperson said that many households who now had smart meters installed had been moved to demand tariff power plans. With demand tariffs an extra charge calculated on the heaviest half-hour of consumption, ie between 2 and 8pm or 3 and 9pm on a single day can be charged.
s
With the recent hot weather, one thing will be for sure with smart meters and that is power bills will rise for the end user..

Truthful Jones says And he swears that it is 100% true - No Bulls##t”
Truthful tells us that he has lived next to his neighbours Sean and Mary for about 50 years.
On their sixtieth anniversary Sean and Mary took a walk back to their old high school, holding hands all the way. The school building was not locked, so they entered, and wandered around the corridors and classroom, reminiscing about their happy school days together.
On their way back home, an armoured car passed them, and a bag fell out, practically landing at their feet. Mary quickly picked it up, but not being sure what to do with it, they took it home. There, she counted the money. The bag contained $50,000! Sean said, “We have to give it back.” Mary said, “Finders keepers.” She put the money back in the bag and hid it up in their attic.
The next day, two local police officers were canvassing the neighbourhood looking for the money and knocked on their door. “Pardon me”, one police officer said, “but did either of you find a bag that fell out of an armoured car yesterday?”
Mary said, “No.” Sean said, “She’s lying. She hid it up in the attic.” Mary said, “Don’t believe him, he’s getting senile.” The detectives question Sean, “Tell us the story from the beginning.” Sean began, “Well, when Mary and I were walking home from school yesterday…”
The first detective turns to his partner and says, “We’re outta here.”
Morale: Sometimes it pays to act as if you are a bit senile. It could save a lot of trouble.

Selling or buying a property!
Using a Trust to hold shares in a company
With Tove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny
If you’re considering a Trust to organise the ownership of your company this series of posts discusses some issues to consider. Following on from the previous post where we looked at the Trust, fiduciary relationships, Beneficiaries and Trustees, now we delve a little deeper.
Discretionary trusts
Discretionary Trusts arise when the Trustee can choose which Beneficiaries receive the Trust property, and how much of the Trust property each Beneficiary gets. The discretion part lies with the Trustee having the option of splitting up the Trust property however they like.
Unit trusts
Unit Trusts in comparison are fixed, express Trusts unlike discretionary Trusts. Unit Trusts allocate the shares in the Trust property for Beneficiaries in the Trust agreement, rather than at the discretion of the Trustee Each Beneficiary is allocated a unit in the trust property as stated in the Trust agreement.
account for a small percentage of a companies’ ownership. So, if you start a company with a friend and you decide to divide ownership equally, you might decide to start your company by having 1000 shares available to be owned. You and your friend would each receive 500 shares, which you could sell. However, you can arrange it so that a Trustee owns the shares in the company.
Can a Trust Own Shares in a Company?
Legally, a Trust cannot own shares in a company as it is not a separate legal entity, rather a trust is simply a relationship. However, this changes when you consider the Trustee/s and what they can hold for Beneficiaries.
Company ownership
Ownership of a company is allocated through shares. Shares
Trustees can own many types of property, including cash and property including company shares for the benefit of Beneficiaries.
So, if you operate your own company, you can set up a trust to hold your shares. If you’re the Trustee, you can distribute the profits from the Trust to yourself.
Easton Lawyers are your Local Lawyers in Maleny, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland, Australia. Easton Lawyers. 62 Maple Street, Maleny. Qld. 4552 Phone. 0754943511.
As with all Trusts, a Trustee cannot be the sole Beneficiary which means you’ll want to appoint other Beneficiaries, such as family members to benefit from the Trust.
If you are considering a trust or company, please seek legal advice before taking action. Should you have any questions please contact our office on 07 5494 3511 Monday to Friday between 08:30 and 17:00 AEST.
For the team at Easton Lawyers it is a privilege to help people through tough and stressful times and if the client cannot come to them this is no obstacle as home visits and/or hospital visits are a service they provide.

Alfred Charles King Cooke was born on the 7th January 1872 in Kiama, New South Wales. He was the son of Irish emigrants, Mary Ann and William Cooke, he moved with his parents to northern NSW in 1883.
In 1895,Alfred married his cousin, Ada Margaret King and together, they had thirteen children – six girls and seven boys. Moving from the Lismore area of New South Wales in 1904 the Cooke family moved to Teutoberg, now called Witta Maleny to farm.
In Maleny, besides running his mixed farm he was an auctioneer and bought the Maleny Hotel. He was heavily involved in much of Maleny’s early European settlement. He donated the land for Cooke Park in Maple Street, Maleny to the community. Both Alfred and his wife, Ada are buried in the Witta Cemetery.
