Nuclear energy is the only 24/7 baseload energy source that has ZERO emissions. That means no air pollution. It means no carbon emissions. And it means far less land and raw materials - a solution more SUSTAINABLE than renewables Australia's been a nuclear nation for longer than most of us have been alive.

We use nuclear to diagnose, treat and prevent diseases; to identify and disrupt threats; and soon, to power our naval defence.

For 65 years, we've shown that Australia has the talent, safe conditions and competitive advantage necessary to develop a nuclear industry.

As we attempt to reduce our carbon footprint on our environment zero emissions nuclear energy will mean lower power prices for families.

Cheaper energy. More jobs.

Bountiful opportunities. For you. For families and their businesses. Secured for generations to come

Our plan will empower communities, bolster industry, and secure Australia's energy long into the future. Our nuclear plan will provide cheap, clean and consistent energy to restore Australia's capacity as an industrial and manufacturing powerhouse. We'll drive prices down, keep the lights on, and SECURE Australia's energy supply for the long-term.

Nuclear technology continues to improve and made safer. The International Atomic Energy Agency says nuclear power plants are among "the safest and most secure facilities in the world".

Do you know your home’s level of bushfire risk?

Spring brings with it the start of Sunshine Coast’s dry season. It also heralds the start of bushfire season.

Sunshine Coast Council is encouraging our residents to familiarise themselves with understanding bushfire season and how to prepare.

It’s also important to make sure you have a bushfire survival plan and that everyone in your household knows what actions to take should a bushfire occur.

RFSQ and Council reminded residents that in bushfire-prone areas they should be selfreliant to ensure their safety.

Your property is more at risk from bushfires if : you live close to bushland your area has a bushfire history you have greenery within 20 metres of your buildings your structures are built on a slope. Stay informed by visiting Council’s Disaster Hub

Australia is a nation in transition. In the span of a generation, Australia’s population has increased by more than half.

“It appears that Australians are comfortable in their own skin- embracing of this sunburnt country with all its iconic landmarks, yet proud of the cultural achievements and our diverse cities.”

From 1950 to 2020, Australia underwent significant changes in societal attitudes, reflecting broader global trends and the nation's own unique developments. This period saw shifts in perspectives on issues such as immigration, gender equality, Indigenous rights, and environmental concerns, driven by social movements, legislative changes, and evolving cultural norms.

1950s: Post-War Conservatism and Immigration

In the 1950s, Australia was marked by a conservative social order, heavily influenced by British traditions. The nation was recovering from World War II, and there was a strong emphasis on stability and economic growth. The "White Australia Policy" was still in effect, reflecting the prevailing belief that Australia should remain predominantly Anglo-Celtic. As a young child one can remember furniture and major items being branded with “Made with European Labour Only”. This remained until 1963. This stamp was a union requirement to stop unionised labour being threatened by Chinese and Pacific Islanded cheaper labour.

The post-war period also saw the beginning of mass immigration, primarily from Europe, which slowly began to diversify the population. While initially there was resistance to non-British immigrants, the influx of Southern and Eastern Europeans began to challenge the existing social fabric. Many benefits were brought to this country by those southern European immigrants - think of the Greek and Italian cafes of the day.

1960s-1970s: Social Movements and Reforms

The 1960s and 1970s were a time of significant social change in Australia, mirroring global movements such as civil rights, feminism, and anti-

war protests. The War in Vietnam was a very disruptive war for the Australian population. People had very strong views about the rights and wrongs of the war and should Australia even be involved.

The feminist movement gained momentum, leading to increasing awareness and advocacy for gender equality. Women's roles in society began to shift, with more women entering the workforce and challenging traditional gender roles.

Until 1965 females of any age were not allowed to drink alcohol in a public bar of a licensed hotel. In March 1965 Merle Thornton, mother of historian Dr Harold Thornton and Australian film and television actress Sigrid Thornton, and Rosalie Bogner chained themselves to the bar of the Regatta Hotel, Brisbane in protest. The plan was conceived at the University of Queensland, where Ms Thornton worked as an academic. This plan would eventually help to open pub doors to women throughout Queensland.

During this period, attitudes towards Indigenous Australians also began to change. The 1967 referendum, which allowed Indigenous Australians to be counted in the census and gave the federal government the power to make laws for them, was a watershed moment. This was a reflection of growing recognition of the injustices faced by Indigenous communities, although much progress was still needed.

The end of the "White Australia Policy" in the 1970s marked a significant shift in attitudes towards immigration. The policy was gradually dismantled, and Australia began to embrace multiculturalism,

Continued on next page

recognising the contributions of immigrants from diverse backgrounds.

1980s-1990s: Economic Liberalism and Cultural Shifts

The 1980s and 1990s were characterised by economic liberalisation and a further shift towards a more multicultural and inclusive society. The Hawke and Keating governments implemented significant economic reforms, moving towards a more open and deregulated economy. These changes were accompanied by a growing recognition of Australia's place in the Asia-Pacific region, leading to stronger ties with neighbouring countries.

Culturally, the period saw a rise in the recognition and celebration of Australia's multicultural identity. There was also increased awareness of environmental issues, driven by the global environmental movement. This led to growing public support for conservation efforts and policies aimed at protecting Australia's unique natural environment.

2000s-2020s: Indigenous Rights, Marriage Equality, and Environmentalism

In the 21st century, Australia continued to grapple with its history and the ongoing challenges faced by Indigenous Australians. The 2008 apology to the Stolen Generations by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was a landmark moment, acknowledging the wrongs of the past and symbolising a commitment to reconciliation.

The debate over marriage equality was another significant issue during this period. After years of public and political debate, same-sex marriage was legalised in 2017, reflecting changing societal attitudes towards LGBTQ+ rights.

Environmental concerns also became increasingly prominent, with growing awareness of climate change and its impacts. Public opinion began to shift towards greater support for renewable energy and policies aimed at reducing carbon emissions, although this has been a contentious issue in Australian politics.

In Conclusion

Between 1950 and 2020, Australia transformed from a conservative, Anglo-centric society to a more diverse,

inclusive, and socially progressive nation. These changes were driven by social movements, legislative reforms, and evolving cultural norms, reflecting both global influences and Australia's own unique trajectory.

Despite the progress, challenges remain, particularly in areas such as Indigenous rights and environmental sustainability, as Australia continues to navigate its complex social landscape.

As each year passes Australia’s cultural face changes at an ever increasing rate. This is mainly due to the ever increasing numbers of people coming from the various diverse countries of the world.

Amidst this massive national and global change, the Aussie spirit is alive and growing in the 21st Century.

Take care with Lithiumion batteries

Did you know that Lithium-ion batteryrelated fires, including those caused by low-quality batteries in e-mobility devices, are the fastest-growing type of fires attended by emergency service personnel. As a result E-bikes, e-scooters, hoverboards and e-skateboards will have to meet new product standards to halt this rising number of dangerous blazes. Lithium-ion batteries when mistreated or misused, they can overheat, go into "thermal runaway," and catch fire. Fires can be triggered by overcharging, overheating, or exposure to extreme temperatures.

An

Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions

Buying an election

“Is there no shame some people risk to remain in power”

I don’t know about you, but I have noticed an extraordinary amount of advertising by the Queensland Government about its Big Build Infrastructure plan. This advertising campaign runs on TV, in print media, social media and radio. It is costing the state millions of dollars. Yes, this advertising is about infrastructure plans. This costing does not cover the costings for the hundreds of government employed public relations personnel and journalists and advertising for other state projects. All of this in a year that the State goes to to polls to elect the next government.

The Queensland’s own Audit Office has recommended that the Department of the Premier and Cabinet diversifies the membership of the Government Advertising and Communication Committee to strengthen its independence.

This committee has been under the direct control of the Queensland’s Premiers Office for some time.

The same Audit Office recommended that Government advertising expenditure should be prudent, with entities using taxpayer funds to genuinely provide information to the public rather than to gain political advantage.

It is important that the system enhances public reporting of total expenditure on advertising and communication activities on campaigns to stop political campaigns being paid for through direct government funds .

The saved funds could then go towards authentic important government social projects.

Truthful Jones says And he swears that it 100% true - No Bulls##t”

that he was flying from Brisbane to Perth to visit his son and daughter-in-law.

Unexpectedly, the plane was diverted to Adelaide along the way because of bad weather. The flight attendant explained that there would be a delay, and if the passengers wanted to get off the aircraft and stretch their legs. The plane would reboard in about 50 minutes.

Everybody got off the plane except one lady who was blind. One man did noticed her as he walked by and could tell the lady was blind because her Seeing Eye dog lay quietly underneath the seats in front of her throughout the entire flight.

He could also tell she had flown this very flight before because the pilot approached her, and calling her by name, said, “Kathy, we are in Adelaide for almost an hour. Would you like to get off and stretch your legs?”

The blind lady replied, “No thanks, but maybe my dog would like to stretch his legs.”

All the people in the gate area came to a complete standstill when they looked up and saw the pilot walk off the plane with a Seeing Eye dog! The pilot was even wearing sun-glasses.

People scattered. They not only tried to change planes, but they were trying to change airlines!

Truthful Jones says, “The moral to the story is never assume anything as not everything may be as it first appears.”

Who Gives A Crap? - We Do!

What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets?

We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under five dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation.

Profits from the sale of this toilet paper is used our donation could go to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects.

Celebrate Jersey Day August 30th

Jersey Day has been inspired by the story of 13 year old Nathan Gremmo, who was tragically lost in an accident in 2015. Nathan's family chose to give the gift of life to others to honour the legacy of Nathan's generous personality.

Jersey Day is an opportunity for schools and workplaces across Australia to allow students and employees to wear their favourite sporting jersey to school or work to encourage conversations with family and friends about the importance of becoming an organ and tissue donor.

Jersey Day is fun and it is free - there is no requirement to raise funds. Just wear your favourite jersey and consider signing up to become an organ donor.

An accident in your home: Occupier’s Liability

With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny

An accident causing someone injury in your home does not necessarily mean that you as the occupier is liable for that injury. As an occupier you are only liable if an accident is caused by your failure to take ‘reasonable care’ to protect the person being injured. The key words are ‘reasonable care’. As you may have suspected already there is no hard and fast rule about what amounts to ‘reasonable care’ or lack of such care. It depends very much on the nature of the premises, the type of danger and the reason for entry. An example is a defective staircase in a house would be a danger to most people but would not be a danger to the tradesperson engaged to fix the staircase.

You may think that provided that your visitor has been warned of the danger then this would be suffi cient to protect you from liability. However a warning is not always sufficient to protect you from liability. The occupier’s duty

is to take ‘reasonable care’ to protect your visitor from danger –not simply to warn your visitor of the danger. Sometimes a warning may be sufficient but other times not depending on the type of danger.

What of a person who enters your premises without your permission – a trespasser? The law holds that if you know or you have reason to suspect that a trespasser is on your premises, you have a duty to that trespasser to take reasonable care to protect that person from injury. This duty does vary depending on the circumstances. An example here would be the requirement on you to fence a pool to prevent a child trespasser from being injured or drowned.

Finally, a landlord has a statutory duty, under the Residential Tenancies Act (Qld) 1994, to keep premises in good order and repair. A landlord may be liable if a tenant is injured on the premises, the injuries occurred as a result of the landlord’s failure to

repair defects and the landlord knew of the defects.

Today’s Thought

"Don't

How much battery power do I need for my home?

Purchasing a battery is a big decision and you want to make sure you make the right choice – especially when we’re talking about battery size. At Redback, we get it. It’s difficult to know what battery will work best for your home and your lifestyle.

We always recommend talking with an accredited installer in your area, as they’re fully trained to look at all your individual needs and advise on the correct sized system.

RedEarth’s PowerOasis is a fully integrated, ready-to-run and modular Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) catering for the niche 50-400kVA power range. It has the option to use both the inbuilt solar PV MPPT or AC-coupled solar PV inverters can be added.

What is Hybrid Solar?

When your looking into your next solar investment, a word that may pop up a few times is "Hybrid". This might have you confused at first but not to worry as the configuration is quite simple!

Hybrid is the term used for a solar system with batteries still connected to the grid, in most cases this means that the system will run off the batteries before any grid usage limiting your reliance on the grid, hybrid systems can even run your house through a blackout essentially being off grid without the steep price of oversizing the system with no backup (the grid).

Hybrid is often best fit for residential homes anywhere from remote to suburbia, this is often the configuration picked to fully remove power bills as the simple grid-tied systems have become obsolete with the lower power export prices. As the system still has grid connection you can undersize the system with battery capacity and solar without needing a generator as the grid is essentially an infinite backup.

Maleny SES looking for volunteers

Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.

You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.

Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.

An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, flood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.

Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.

Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..

Maleny Neighbourhood Centre supports Orange Sky Laundry.

People have an idea in their head of what a person who’s experiencing homelessness looks like. We may reject the thought of ourselves reflected in this stereotype.

Although the sad reality is that many Australians are struggling to make ends meet. With the rising cost of living, people who never expected to struggle are finding themselves in challenging situations.

At the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre there is provided a platform for everyday Australians to connect through a regular laundry service. The focus is on creating a safe, positive and supportive environment for people who are too often ignored or who feel disconnected from the community.

Whilst the Neibourhood Centre volunteers are not social workers or experts on homelessness - they are empathetic listeners and great conversationalists.

Travelling Jackaroo “I’m

finally

home”

“A great welcome back home in Maleny” This part of my mission has now ended!

Photo Above - In Darwin when I met Mary from “Are you bogged mate” which is aimed help connect country men with support services and breakdown the stigma associated with seeking help.

Photo Above - and at Charters Towers, non other than the legendary Fred Brophy from Fred Brophy's Boxing Troupe

“And finally, my faithful mate “Bitsa” whom I met along the journey. He has remained faithful and bloody good company”

My Letter to you all!

And so my 1st big adventure comes to an end.

Over 26,000kms travelled over three and a half years. Over a Quarter of a Million Dollars raised for the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia, Dolly's Dream and Farm Angels previously Drought Angels.

To say it’s been an experience would be an understatement, more like an education. When I left home back in 2021 I was a fresh out of school 18 year old with a dream, and now as a 21 year old I’ve made it become a reality.

But it isn’t something I’ve done on my own, it’s you amazing people that made it possible, all the people who lent a hand when I was having trouble, all those who made a donation, and of course to all my amazing sponsors including but not limited to (All Coast Tyre Solutions, Belmara Industries & Melbourne Screen Hire, SAVITREK, Berry Springs Mechanical, Geraldton Towing Services and so many others who kept me on the road)

As the years went on and the miles racked up I’ve learned more about the people who make this country what it is, from Truckies to Drovers, from Firefighters to Publicans and so many others, they all play a part in keeping this great nation moving. And whilst the wheels of Slim may now take a well deserved rest, this will by no means be the last you’ll be seeing of me across your socials, for my next dream with the Mobile museum on Bush history is on the horizon and it will be my next big adventure in the years to come.

Thankyou all so much for your support and donations these last few years, you all deserve a firm handshake and a pat on the back.

Sincerely

“Maleny

Agricultural Show 1924”

It was a herculean feat to prepare the land, now known as the Maleny Show-Grounds for the first Maleny Show.

The Maleny Show Society was formed in 1922. Maleny's first show opened, on the June 26 and 27, 1923, in pouring rain and cyclonic winds. Over the years the show has gone from strength to strength.

Maleny Agricultural Show would not be successful without the tireless work of local
