The British Land Rover has been transporting the world’s explorers, adventurers, workers and armed forces through jungle, desert, snow and high mountains for 70 years.
Today the Range Rover by the Land Rover company is a highly desirable luxury vehicle and is often seen as a status symbol. This has not always been the case as the original Land Rover vehicles were very rudimentary and were seen as a country working vehicle.
Land Rover, a marque of luxury all-terrain vehicles, has a rich history marked by innovation, resilience, and a distinctive British heritage. The brand's origins trace back to the aftermath of World War II, a period marked by a dire need for utilitarian vehicles to aid in reconstruction and agricultural activities.
As a young boy living in Western Queensland near the Northern Territory border there wasn’t too much to think about except your horse and dog, a rifle and being “home before the lights came on at night” - if you were not home by then Mum would “set you right” when you did get home.
In those days much of the travel was still done by horseback. It was wondrous to watch the large mobs of stock, usually in numbers of over 1000 head travelling through, all in the command of some ringers or horsemen who were accompanied by their horse drawn wagons.
It was not until about 1950 that basic motor vehicles began to appear in any numbers. Many of them were Austin Champ or Willy’s Jeep, 4wheel drives which were left overs from WW11.
As seasons became more prosperous due to good weather new Land Rover vehicles started to arrive. Those Land Rover vehicles came to Australia from England, but had to be assembled locally.
The genesis of Land Rover began with the Rover Company, established in 1878, initially focusing on
bicycles and later branching into automobiles. The inspiration for the Maurice Wilks, the Rover Company's chief designer, who was influenced by the American Willys Jeep. In 1947, Wilks, using an old Jeep chassis, created a prototype with a center-mounted steering wheel, aiming for a versatile, farm-friendly vehicle. This prototype was developed into the Land Rover Series I, which debuted at the Amsterdam Motor Show in April 1948.
When Land Rover vehicles were first introduced in Britain a promotion with a circus elephant seated in it travelled throughout England.
The Series I was a utilitarian 4x4, characterised by its robustness and versatility, featuring an 80-inch wheelbase and a 1.6-litre petrol engine. Its Continued on next page

aluminium body, chosen due to post-war steel shortages, became a distinctive feature. Initially the steering wheel was situated in the centre of the vehicle. This was soon discontinued.
Land Rover was granted a Royal Warrant by King George VI in 1951.
The vehicle was an immediate success, appealing to farmers, the military, and export markets. This initial success established Land Rover's reputation for durability and off-road capability.
There was even a Land Rover vehicle converted to an amphibious vehicle for specialised tasks.
Many of the vehicles were equipped with a powered pulley on the rear driven off the vehicle transfer case. The purpose of this was to drive machinery
such as water pumps or big saw blades via a canvas belt for working around the property
Who could forget when in 1954 the Queen visited Australia for the first time. Australians gathered in huge numbers, usually in major sporting venues such as the MCG and The Gabba to see her. She

The Army purchased its first “regular” Series 2 short wheelbase (88 Inch) Land Rovers in 1958. On entering service in 1959, the vehicles were designated Trucks, Command and Reconnaissance, ¼ ton, and had very few specialised military fitments. Soon after their acquisition, a number of variants began to appear. These included vehicles fitted for radio, in this case the British B42/C47 series of radios and an

In 2020 the Australian Army started to phase out the Land Rover as a standard vehicle.
Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Land Rover expanded its lineup with the introduction of the Series II in 1958 and the Series IIA in 1961. These models featured improvements in engine power and comfort, yet retained the rugged, functional design that had become Land Rover's hallmark. The Series IIA, in particular, became iconic, widely used in diverse roles, from African safaris to British military expeditions.
In 1970, Land Rover entered the luxury 4x4 market with the launch of the Range Rover. This vehicle combined the off-road capabilities of the earlier models with unprecedented levels of comfort and refinement, pioneering the concept of the luxury SUV. The Range Rover's innovative features, such as permanent four-wheel drive and a dual-purpose capability, set new standards in the industry.
The 1980s and 1990s saw further diversification of the Land Rover brand. In 1989, the Discovery was introduced, targeting a broader market segment with a family-friendly design while retaining robust off-road credentials. In 1997, the Freelander debuted as a compact SUV, marking Land Rover's entry into the burgeoning market for smaller, more urban-oriented off-road vehicles.
Land Rover faced several ownership changes in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. In 1994, it was acquired by BMW, which led to the development of new models and technologies. In 2000, Ford Motor Company purchased Land Rover, integrating it into its Premier Automotive Group. This period saw the launch of the third-generation Range Rover in 2002, incorporating advanced technology and luxury features.
In 2008, Indian automotive giant Tata Motors acquired Land Rover, along with Jaguar, from Ford, forming Jaguar Land Rover (JLR).
Under Tata's ownership, JLR flourished, launching several successful models, including the Range Rover Evoque in 2011, the all-new Defender in 2019, and the introduction of electric and hybrid technologies.
Land Rover's commitment to innovation and adventure remains steadfast. The brand continues to evolve, blending its storied heritage with cuttingedge technology and sustainability initiatives.
Today the Landcover brand is more thought about as being more like “The Potts Point Taxi” as the more financial
As Land Rover looks to the future, it aims to maintain its status as a leader in the luxury SUV market while

Wet & forget “mould killer” products
The original Wet & Forget concentrate is the ultimate outdoor moss, mould, lichen and algae remover that is safe to use on any exterior surface. It kills problem spores and helps stop premature regrowth of unwanted biological growth.
With the season of summer barbecues, Christmas gettogethers and planning for New Year's celebrations now well on the way, it’s time to make sure your entertaining areas are looking spick & span!
The original Wet & Forget concentrate has a unique combination of biodegradable selective fungicides to target moss, mould, lichen, algae, and general biological growth. When diluted with water and applied to a dry surface, it immediately attacks the growth. These fungicides work in conjunction with a carefully selected range of surfactants to help loosen and lift biological
growth, and then Mother Nature takes over. The weathering process gently removes the decomposing growth over time without damaging the surface it has infested.
Wet and ForgetRapid Application is the new and improved, readyto-use, hose end version of the original Wet & Forget outdoor concentrate moss, mould, lichen and algae remover. It works exactly the same way as the original Wet & Forget 5L concentrate, but it comes in an easy, ready-to-use bottle.
Wet & Forget is safe to apply to any exterior surface. Just spray and leave. This can be sandstone, bricks, pavers or tiles. Just spray and leave, and then over time the surface will come clean.
Remember that this product does not clean the surface IMMEDIATELY.
It is a maintenance product and needs to be reapplied on a regular basis depending on the amount of rain and sunshine that the area receives.
It is a great productive used correctly as a maintenance product. Wet & Forget rapid works simply by attaching to your hose.
No pumping or mixing!
How and When to treat your roof
Wet & Forget and Rapid Application are best applied to a DRY roof on a cool, dry day with minimal wind. This will avoid the product being blown away as it is being sprayed on and will also avoid it evaporating too fast in the hot sun or on a hot surface. Make sure that there is no rain expected for at least 6 hours, as premature rain can wash the product off before it has properly penetrated the growth.

An
Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions
“Is
Queensland
there an election in the air?”
As elections at all levels of government draw nearer it is amazing just what happens to sneak out of the woodwork.
Firstly there are small projects tom benefit the community and then as time progresses projects become bigger. Take for instance the 50 cent public transport fares for six months. Is it just a coincidence that they are to be in force just before the election date then cease after the election date has passed? Not even all the government bodies responsible for that project were advised or knew about it before the event.
Now the cost or car registration will be reduced by 20% for Queensland residents. Whilst this is a welcome price reduction, how can it be reduced immediately before an election? If it is financially possible for the state to forgo this money why is it not a permanent benefit?
There is a one off payment of $1000 to offset the price of power to customers. Why has the government kept prices high for years? Why did state governments privatise the supply of power at all - essential services such as power and water should not be conveniences that private companies make profits from as they wish.
Have you noticed the number of “paid” advertisements on television of recent weeks explaining “the good projects” shown under the title of community information, that have been carried out by themselves?
No wonder there needs to be so many public relations officers and journalists in the State Premier’s office and there offices of the various Ministers and Assistant Ministers.
Now the government has found $200 million hidden away in two funds, The Local Congestion Busting program and the Productivity Enhancement Program that is about to be distributed. Where will that money be spent and on what and in whose electorates - no business plan for any of it has been produced. Nor has a business plan been produced for a second Bribie Island Bridge costing about $1 Billion. Is there an election in the air?
Truthful Jones says And he swears that it 100% true - No Bulls##t”
Truthful had, his Irish cousin Maureen Kelly who lives in Cork, Ireland decided to do her Christmas shopping in Dublin.
“Be careful,” her friend Caitlan said, “those department stores in Dublin charge far more than you would pay down here in Cork. They always double the price. So, when you get there, only offer them half.” “To be sure I will Caitlan,” Maureen said, and off she went to Dublin to do her Christmas shopping.
She was walking past a large department store when she saw a dress in the window display. She liked the dress, but she didn’t like the price.
Taking heed of what her friend Caitlan had told her, she went inside and got hold of one of the store managers. “The dress in the window is priced at €80. That’s much too dear!”
“Madam,” the manager replied, “believe me it is a very reasonable price for such a lovely dress.”
“Get on with ye,” Maureen said loudly. “Everyone knows that in Dublin you pay twice as much as anywhere else. I’ll give you €40 and not a penny more.”
“Please Madam,” the manager said, “I don’t want a scene. If you calm down, I’ll let you have the dress for €40.″
“In that case,” retorted Maureen, “I’ll give you €20 for it.”
“Madam, please!” begged the manager, “I don’t want to sully our reputation, but if it will make you go away you can have it for €20.”
“In that case I’ll give you €10.” Said Maureen, feeling like she was on a roll.
At his wits end, the manager replied, “Madam, just to get rid of you, please take the dress for nothing.”
“In that case,” said Maureen triumphantly, “I’ll be wanting two of them.”
Now that is a good way to get an actual bargain, maybe try it out here at Bunnings and see just how it works!!

COMPANY DIRECTORS BEWARE !
The days when Company
Directors could plead ignorance of their Company’s affairs are long gone with the courts showing very little sympathy for Director who use ignorance as a defence. No longer can a Director argue that the appointment was a token appointment or one that he or she was pressured into accepting.
Directors are expected to:
• Be proactive and actively participate in the management of the Company. Total nonparticipation is impermissible;
• Understand the role that a Director performs;
• Ensure that the solvency of the Company can be monitored on a continuing basis.
Directors in particular have an obligation to prevent their Company from incurring debts that the Company cannot pay for.
A Director is also expected to be able to judge the fine line between solvency and insolvency and be ready to act to prevent the Company engaging in insolvent trading. However to be able to identify the fine line between solvent and insolvent trading is not an easy one.
It is the Company’s cash-flow which is of crucial importance and this is where the line between solvent and insolvent trading can be found. A Company is only solvent if it is able to pay all of its debts "as and when they fall due” – not just some of its debts. A Company that has a surplus of assets over liabilities can still be technically insolvent because of the lack of cash flow to cover its debts.
If it is alleged that a Director has contravened the Corporations Act in relation to insolvent trading the Director must be able to prove one of the following as defence:
• when the Company incurred the debt the Director had reasonable grounds to expect that the Company was solvent and would remain solvent even if the debt was incurred; or
• when the Company incurred the debt the Director had reasonable grounds to believe (and actually believed) that a subordinate in the Company was competent enough to provide the correct information about the Company’s solvency status and that the Director relied upon this information; or

• that when the debt was incurred the Director, because of illness or some other good reason, was unable to take part in the management of the company at that time; or
• that the Director took all reasonable steps to stop the Company from incurring the debt.
It is clear that although Directors may delegate certain responsibilities to other subordinates in the Company, they are still obliged to have an active role in the management of the affairs of the Company. To fail in this obligation to properly discharge the duties of the office of a Director could lead to personal exposure to liability and in many cases significant sums of money.

Did you Know?
Who made Australia’s first utility vehicle?”
Ford Australia was the first company to produce an Australian Coupe ute, which was released in 1934.
This was the result of a 1932 letter from the unnamed wife of a farmer in Australia asking for "a vehicle to go to church in on a Sunday and which can carry our pigs to market on Mondays”.
The ute has remained successful over time, becoming a classic Australian icon, even up to the present day. Imagine any “farm boy” who does not own a ute!

Today’s Thought
The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”

Maleny SES looking for volunteers
Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.
You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.
Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.
An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, flood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.
Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.
Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..
Highly invasive fire ants have been detected on the Sunshine Coast.
Fire ants were first found in Australia in 2001 and are believed to have entered through the Port of Brisbane. The fire ants in South East Queensland have now spread to over 850,000 hectares so far.
The National Fire Ant Eradication Program has confirmed two fire ant nests were detected in Nirimba near Bells Creek. An emergency response now underway to assess the extent of the fire ant infestation and develop a treatment plan.
Fire ants were last detected on the Sunshine Coast in Beerwah in 2017 and declared eradicated in 2020. Fire ants are attracted to disturbed soil and other organic materials, and they can be transported through humanassisted movement of such products.
Fire ants can have devastating impacts on our environment, economy, human and animal health, and our outdoor way of life.
If you think you may have fire ants, take a close-up image of the ants or nest and report it on the National Fire Ant Eradication Program website or by calling 13 25 23 as soon as possible.
For more information including fire ant first aid, maps of detected nests and more simply visit: https://www.fireants.org.au/

“I have left Tassie”
Going through Melbourne in the tractor with a crash gear box - keeping things interesting shifting gears and it would have to have been the most gear changes I’ve ever done in a single day…. The number of stop starts and traffic made things real fun !!!!
Now Bitsa and I start the run home. Something I have learned about driving in Melbourne; indicators are apparently optional and even when seldom used they are completely disregarded. Another thing is that merging and giving way is an art that is yet to be taught in the Driving schools of the south.
Whilst in Melbourne I headed down to catchup with my fuel sponsors, Belmara Industries & Melbourne Screen Hire. They have been very generous.
I also saw one of the greatest show museums I’ve ever seen and it is in fact the largest private collection in Australia down here in Melbourne, with items dating back to the 1800s. It is operated by the Miller Family who are one of the oldest show families in Australia.
Now I start the run home.
Make sure that you look after your matesTreat them all well!.
There are no places for bullies or abusers.
Back on the Mainland!
Arrived in Melbourne on June 23rd aboard the Tasmanian Achiever 2. I’d like to say a huge Thank-you to Strait Link for sponsoring my trip across to Tassie and back and in doing so letting me hit my fundraising goal of $250,000.
If you ever need anything moved to or from Tassie, Strait Link are the people to talk to!
Now came the hard partguiding “Slim” through the Melbourne traffic!
Down here in Melbourne it could freeze the balls off a brass monkey this week, I recon it’s colder than a mother in laws kiss or an eskimos nose. Streuth it’s cold

Who Remembers this?
“1940 - Maleny Butter Factory”
Maleny produced world recognised butter from its factory in Coral Street right up to 1981. Who still remembers Maleny Butter?
As reported in the Nambour Chronicle on Friday September 13th, 1940. “Erected at a cost of £25,000, the new factory of the Maleny Co-operative Dairy Association, equipped with modern machinery, has been opened and the plant is now running smoothly. The design of the factory incorporates the latest practice — to keep butter under controlled conditions from the time it is received until the finished article is despatched — and to accomplish this the factory is air conditioned. ,. An innovation is the double decking of operations, which is claimed to be new to Australia. Although the factory is capable of manufacturing: 60 tons of butter a week, provision has been made for expansion of that-output- when required.”
