Maleny Enclave
“From cow paddock to housing estate”
Like it or not, but what was once cow paddocks, the home to many of Hopper’s contented cows has almost over-night morphed into a bustling construction site where a residential community, The Enclave Maleny is quickly taking shape.
Maleny was a timber town until the early 1920s and then was a centre of dairy production and today it has progresses to a residential area for those working along the Sunshine Coast or even down into Brisbane.
Many people are drawn to the Maleny area to live because of s a climate that’s cooler than the coast, offering a comfortable and refreshing environment for residents as well as being a very socially active community.

Maleny Dairies misses out again!!!
At Maleny Dairies on Monday 16th September with CEO Stephen Tait speaking on another missed opportunity for the iconic local and family run dairy. Maleny Dairies has again been passed over by the Metro North Health and Hospital Services for the supply of dairy products,
Missing out on contracts can be a part of business, but we are calling for an efficient and more streamlined procurement process. The blown out delay in the timeline has seen the dairy
turn down other contracts and opportunities while they waited nine months for the government to make up their mind, just to come up empty-handed anyway.
And that's not to mention the resources and costs associated with the tender.
Queensland small and family businesses need an efficient and cost effective tender process with Government. One that works in partnership with them.
In the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News 'Pip the Pollie' footy tipping competition, unfortunately, I (again) ended up lower on the ladder than I would have liked.
TMR contractors will soon begin landslip repairs at two sites on Obi Obi Road, Obi Obi.
The reconstruction works are scheduled to take up to four months to complete, weather and construction conditions permitting. Single lane closures will be in place for the duration of the construction.

Suicide in the construction industry
An interesting, but sad statistic is that every year, over 190 Australians in construction take their own lives. I recently
MATES in Construction are fighting to bring that number down to ZERO, by connecting tradies with the services they need, and raising awareness about the state of Australians' MentalHealthparticularly for men in skilled trades.
The reality is that construction workers are Eight times more likely to die from suicide than from an accident at work.
We lose a construction worker EVERY SECOND DAY to suicide.
A community Non-profit organisation group, “MATES” provides suicide prevention through community development programs and awareness. I recently met with MATES CEO, Chris, , as he presented the MATES National Report.

“Watch Out - there are snakes about!”
ustralian backyards are a breeding ground for all types of snakes. And snake activity in general is starting ramping up around the backyard and snakes are now being found in spots that one would not normally expect to find them.
As it gets warmer and warmer, especially at night time, snakes will be even more active. Snakes are ectothermic, they rely on their environment to gain
body temperature, which they use to metabolise their food and create energy. Thus you will find them out and sunning themselves.
The only time people really run into trouble is if they tread on them or try to catch and/or kill them.
Should you unfortunately get bitten by a snake, immediately call an ambulance, do not try to drive yourself, immobilisation is critical.
Snakes should not be handled by people who don't have the appropriate experience to be able to control them safely

Who remembers some of the days past around Maleny.
The Maleny APEX Club is always up for a good time when they hold their community fund-raisers.
And so it was when they held their “Mock Deb Ball” in the Talent Show-pavilion a couple of decades ago.
It was just so different to the ver7y formal Children’s Debutante Ball in Maleny in 1937, the hall was transformed into a fairyland and all the Debutants were officially to the Maleny Community by two Page Boys.
Oh! How things have changed over the decades.

Australian Owned and made brands of Ultra-Premium paints
“What do you know about paint?”
Colourtrend Paint Brand is a good strong paint that is easy to wipe down. If it's good quality paint you want then Colourtrend paint is a great choice. Colourtrend is a good quality paint with lots of colours and finishes to choose from and is Australian owned and made!
Paint has been around for a long time in various forms!
Every can of paint contains three essential ingredients: a binder, pigments and a solvent. Manufacturers sometimes refer to the binders and solvent collectively as the “vehicle” for the pigments, which supply the colour.
The history of paint goes back about 100,000 years. From that time to the present, people have found amazing sources for pigments.
“Indian yellow” was the dried urine of cows fed a diet of mango leaves. “Mummy brown” came from — you guessed it — ground-up Egyptian mummies. Right up through medieval times, many people believed deep red “dragon’s blood” actually came from dragons. It didn’t. It came from the sap of the Dragon Blood tree (Dracaena cinnabari).
Pigments are just one component of what we call architectural paint, basically any type you can spray or apply with a paintbrush. This type of ready-mixed paint dates to the 1800s, making it much newer than the paints artists use.
It must be durable as well as colourful, and manufacturers must reproduce any batch they make to guarantee colour and quality uniformity.
Today, many paint products flood the market, and some are definitely better than others. Paint chemistry can be a complicated topic.
How important is colour and your changing mood?
Presently we are going through som stressing times and during those times we tend to see colour trends shift less dramatically than other years.
The old favourite colour of Deluxe Antique White USA is generally well represented in those times. This can be teamed with mid beiges, mid creams and mid greys, or even a mid blue grey.
These types of colours have stood the test of time and are never out of fashion for very long.
Colour can be a powerful antidote to lift spirits and provide a sense of comfort and warmth.
Before making a final choice think about getting a couple of sample pots and paint large sheets of cardboard and move them around the house instead of painting onto a wall!.

“New engineered stone bench tops no longer being installed”
The Australian Government announced a ban on engineered stone and the new rules come into effect on July 1st, 2024
The ban came about as a result of an inquiry that found the rates of silicosis and silica-related diseases have “risen substantially in recent years,
with a disproportionate number of diagnoses in engineered stone workers”.
Silicosis is caused, similarly as asbestos by inhaling silica dust released from engineered stone during the cutting, grinding and polishing phases.
Never fear though there are a number of excellent replacement materials.

Bean from London to Melbourne via the long way!
On April 1st, 2024 a 77-year-old Australian couple Langley and Beverly Kidby started a world tour from London to Melbourne in a 1922 Bean motor car.
This is to emulate the journey taken by Francis Burtle in 1927. This car is a very fast car for its age, however, it is not very convenient to drive in it because it is very narrow and cramped. We can drive at an average speed of between 60 and 70 kph. Unfortunately, the car being about 100 years old makes its a bit unreliable and the couple have had to cope with a number of break-downs.
Follow more of their adventures at: https://next-horizon.org/
Need a Roadworthy Certificate?
Maleny Service Centre have a Licenced Roadworthy Inspector on the premises and we know only too well what it takes to make your vehicle safe and roadworthy.
All vehicles (including trucks, motorbikes and trailers) must have a Safety or Roadworthy Certificate (RWC) if being sold, registered for the first time or being re-registered in Queensland. Registered Vehicles cannot be solid without a RWC.
An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions
Queensland state election - 26th October, 2024!
Buying an election
Four years are up since the last one and the 2024 Queensland state election is scheduled to be held on the 26th October 2024 to elect all members to the Legislative Assembly of Queensland.
Your vote is just one of the precious worldly goods that you possess. Unfortunately, you only get to use it once each four years to elect your Queensland state representatives. So mid is important that you use it wisely.
Unfortunately, politicians and political parties often are more interested in the practice of prioritising immediate political gains over principles or long-term consequences. This approach often involves making decisions that may be ethically questionable or popular, rather than what is genuinely right or beneficial for society.
Politicians and parties may adopt stances that cater to public opinion or influential groups to secure votes or support, even if it means compromising on core values.
While this strategy can yield short-term political benefits, such as getting re-elected, it risks undermining trust in political institutions and eroding the foundational responsibilities of leadership. Ultimately, political expediency may lead to policies that lack sustainability and genuine social progress.
Therefore it is important to cut through the crap and have a closer look at who you want to govern Queensland for the next four years. It is in your hands.
Truthful Jones says And he swears that it 100% trueNo Bulls##t”
Truthful Jones Tells us that he remembers one night at the Maleny Hotel when he was having a quiet snort when he noticed this bloke at the other end of the bar, just looking at his drink. He stays like that for half of an hour.
Then, this big trouble-making truck driver steps next to him, takes the drink from the old mate, and just drinks it all down. The poor man starts crying. The truck driver says, "Come on man, I was just joking. Here, I'll buy you another drink. I just can't stand to see a man cry."
"No, it's not that. This day is the worst of my life. First, I fall asleep, and I go late to my office. My boss, outrageous, fires me. When I leave the building, to my car, I found out it was stolen. The police said that they can do nothing. I get a cab to return home, and when I leave it, I remember I left my wallet and credit cards there. The cab driver just drives away."
"I go home, and when I get there, I find my wife in bed with the gardener. I leave home, and come to this bar. And just when I was thinking about putting an end to my life, you show up and drink my poison.
Just shows - sometimes it pays not to play jokes on people you don’t know too well!

Loans are detailed and complex documents that have numerous provisions, over the next few articles we will review just a few of the issues involved in the loan agreement.
In addition to the well-known home loan there are also a plethora of personal and business loans of various types.
Loans can be fixed or variable or some combination thereof, and mortgages can be low documentation (low doc) or can offer an introductory rate at the start of the loan.
The two primary types of loan agreements are secured and unsecured.
If you enter into a secured loan agreement you must provide some form of security to the lender, but whether secured or

unsecured you will likely be required to provide a guarantee.
A guarantor usually provides a limited guarantee. Often, this will cover the debt plus a percentage of any additional expenses including interest incurred if the loan repayments are late.
Standard provisions in most loans include the:
✓ amount of the loan;
✓ interest rate;
✓ loan is secured or unsecured;
✓ term of the loan (how long the borrower has to repay the loan);
✓ amount of repayments; and
✓ frequency of repayments.
Parties should never enter into a loan without seeking legal advice.

How much battery power do I need for my home?
Purchasing a battery is a big decision and you want to make sure you make the right choice – especially when we’re talking about battery size. At Redback, we get it. It’s difficult to know what battery will work best for your home and your lifestyle.
We always recommend talking with an accredited installer in your area, as they’re fully trained to look at all your individual needs and advise on the correct sized system.
RedEarth’s PowerOasis is a fully integrated, ready-to-run and modular Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) catering for the niche 50-400kVA power range. It has the option to use both the inbuilt solar PV MPPT or AC-coupled solar PV inverters can be added.
Energy Solutions
Design your system now for tomorrow
When considering your own power station, you need to consider not only what you are going to draw energy wise now, but also plan for the future! This is often a step that is missed by designers and could be a very costly mistake for the end user. When we design a system we ask all the right questions and help guide you to the best solution to meet not only your current needs, but your future needs.
Should you design a system to suit a budget point now however are planning on adding more electrical loads to your home or business later then it makes more financial sense to install a system that will allow you to easily build upon the equipment as your energy demands increase.
Installing a solution that is already at its maximum capability will end up costing you much more down the line.
Luckily! most of our systems allow you to start with smaller battery capacity or even smaller solar arrays while allowing a cost effective upgrade as you need it.

Maleny SES looking for volunteers
Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.
You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.
Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.
An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, flood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.
Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.
Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do.
Did you know that Maleny did have a Funeral Parlour
Those who walk up and down Maple Street, Maleny can see this shed at the rear of Maple Street businesses. How many know of the past use of the shed?
It was straight from the mouth of a person who should know, thanks to Harvey (Red) Bryce who states that it was the town's first funeral parlour.
The shed is presently situated behind the building that previously contained Maleny Travel.
It was part of a large parcel of land once owned by Harry Lyons family. On Maple Street Harry Lyons had a mechanical business and a car rental business. The funeral parlour was also run by the Lyons' family and was situated behind the mechanical service station.
At the recent “Muscle on the Mountain” car show the original Maleny Hearse was on show. - some sad memories!. Perhaps someone out there has some other photos of it and can tell us more about this part of Maleny's history.

“Here
“Now back home I have started my own towing business.
is a real scoop for you”
Back when I was up in Darwin driving tilt trays for Berry Springs Mechanical I had a job to go pickup a Landcruiser with electrical issues. On the drive back with the Landcruiser owners, Karen and her husband we had a chat about life n what we do and I guess I my story must’ve struck a chord with her.
Karen is an artist and she decided that she wanted to do a portrait of me and enter it into the Archibald prize awards.

“1951 - Maple Street, Maleny “FIRE”
Remains of the Maleny School of Arts (left background) and W. J. Burnett Chemist store (right & still there - Maleny Fine Foods). The fire swept through the Maleny School of Arts Hall on 25 May 1951. The fire broke out in the adjacent Shaw & Son's Cafe (previously McLeans Cafe) early in the morning and quickly spread to the timber Hall which had been built in 1908.
