“Maleny’s Open Space Park”
Sunshine Coast Council is preparing a Concept Plan for Maleny District Park and is seeking community input to help shape the plan.
In 2010, the Maleny Community Precinct Master Plan was created. This master plan has guided the development of the former farmland since it was adopted in 2011. This has resulted in what is now known as “The Maleny Community Precinct”
Recreation parks are primarily used for recreation, social, cultural and leisure activities. They connect people to the outdoors and may provide other complementary values such as landscape enrichment, biodiversity or cultural conservation.
District Parks with their larger size can cater to a wider range of community needs such as connecting with nature and each other.
Sunshine Coast Council now invites you to have your say on how the next part of the Precincts plan develops. The invitation to have your say is open until 5pm Monday, 12 August 2024.
To have your say there will be on Saturday, 27th July 2024 between 9am and1pm an information kiosk outside Queensland Country Bank, 28 Maple Street, Maleny.
This project is a multi year project.

Around Glass house Electorate with Mr Andrew Powell M.P. The Lights are dimming!
Outside of the Maroochydore CBD, the new Landsborough train station quickly became the Sunshine Coast’s most light polluted space - and now, finally, TMR have agreed to use the lights built-in dimmers to reduce lighting to 70% from dusk until 9:00pm and then further reduced to 40% from 9:00pm until dawn.
Rest assured these are still safe levels that meet lighting standards, now they just won't be blinding the nightlife.
Juvenile Crime Action
The Adult Crime, Adult Time policy will restore consequences for actions with youth offenders held accountable for their crimes, with the ability to receive the same sentences as adults committing the same crimes. The tough on crime policy will form part of the LNP’s Making Queensland Safer Laws.
The policy adds to the LNP’s previously announced changes to the Youth Justice Act which will be rolled out before year-end, including removing “detention as a last resort”, and enshrining in legislation the rights of victims ahead of offenders’ rights
There are five good reasons for change. And there are 5.5 million more right across Queensland.

I recently attended the opening of further extension to the Sunshine Coast University Private hospital. The Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital is a 164-bed hospital offering a range of leading medical, surgical and allied health services. There are now three new operating theatres at this Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital bringing the total to nine. Ramsay Health fully funded the $18 million dollar construction bill. This allows more doctors to take on more lists and expand services to patients. Ophthalmology is a new service and expanding orthopaedic and neurosurgery are other areas.
Our growing population underpins the hospital’s plans for continued growth. Housing for hospital staff is also an ongoing issue.
Carmel Monaghan CEO Ramsay Australia and Peter Fahey CEO SCUPH helped cut the ribbon.
The theatre we are in will be home to open heart surgery too. Seven additional recovery bays have also been unveiled to cater for the additional demand from the new operating theatres.
The redevelopment project also included construction of a tenth operating theatre shell, which can be transformed into a working operating theatre quickly when required.

The Covid virus effected every individual in the world, including you and I. Just how did it do so?
“The COVID-19 pandemic (also known as the coronavirus pandemic), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), began with an outbreak in Wuhan, China, in December 2019.”
Queensland Health Authorities are warning us that we are on the cusp of another serious and unstoppable contagion across the whole nation and that will lead into the normal peak flu season.
Queenslanders with flu symptoms already flood busy hospital emergency departments. This epidemic will centre around daycare centres and schools with those youngsters bringing the illness home to other family members and then the spread starts throughout the entire community. This is how the Queensland Health Department sees this epidemic to proceed.
Are the effects likely to need the precautions put in place as we saw in the recent COVID-19 outbreak?
The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on the global community, reshaping the way we live, work, and interact with one another. From health systems to economies, education to social norms, the effects of the epidemic have been far-reaching and continued to evolve as we navigated this unprecedented crisis. Hopefully, this is not going to happen again.
One of the most immediate and devastating impacts of the COVID-19 epidemic has been on public health systems around the world. Healthcare systems have been stretched to their limits as hospitals and healthcare workers grapple with the influx of patients requiring treatment for COVID-19. The virus exposed weaknesses in healthcare infrastructure, highlighting the need for increased investment in public health and emergency preparedness.
The economic impact of the epidemic has been equally profound, with businesses large and small
facing closures, layoffs, and financial uncertainty. The pandemic has disrupted global supply chains, leading to shortages of essential goods and services, and causing widespread economic hardship for individuals and families.
Governments around the world have had to implement stimulus packages and other measures to support struggling industries and workers, but the long-term economic consequences of the epidemic are still unclear.
The COVID-19 epidemic has also had a significant impact on education, with schools and universities closing their doors and transitioning to online learning. The shift to remote learning has presented challenges for students, teachers, and parents alike, as they navigate the complexities of virtual education. The digital divide has become more apparent, with students from low-income households facing barriers to accessing online learning resources.
Social norms and behaviours have also been affected by the COVID-19 epidemic, with restrictions on travel, gatherings, and other activities changing the way we interact with one another. Social distancing measures have become the new normal, leading to feelings of isolation and loneliness for many individuals. The epidemic has also sparked debates over issues such as maskwearing, vaccination, and government intervention in public health crises.
As the world community continues to grapple with the effects of the COVID-19 epidemic, it has become clear that global cooperation and solidarity were and are more important than ever.

International organisations, governments, and individuals must work together to combat the spread of other similar viruses, support those most affected by the epidemic, and build a more resilient and sustainable future.
The COVID-19 epidemic has had a profound impact on the world community, touching every aspect of our lives. From public health to economics, education to social norms, the effects of the epidemic will be felt for years to come. As we navigated through this crisis it was and is essential that we work towards a more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable future for all.
In conclusion the COVID-19 outbreak could have been better contained with quicker responses. Quick decision-making and coordinated efforts are critical. Many of the problems were caused by political game playing and trying to hide just where this virus started and who was responsible.
With proper and accurate information sharing when it was first realised that COVID-19 had escaped from the laboratory the outbreak could have been foreseen and prevented, or that the spread could have been more effectively contained causing less social and economic disruption and averting deaths.
Even today that political game playing continues on. COVID-19 has brought into sharp focus the limitations of past efforts and the need for a more ambitious and sustained approach to preparedness. That is another whole matter that needs to be considered.
The COVID-19 pandemic also highlighted the need for action at the global level and a large share of proposed increases in international finance for preparedness is focused on addressing perceived gaps in the global domain.
That does ask the question “why are we as a world community experimenting with such viruses?
Collaborating with international organisations like the World Health Organisation (WHO) and sharing information promptly can improve pandemic response. After all isn’t this why we financially
maintain such bodies, so why not use the global expertise that we hope that such a body holds.
Although we’ve come a long way since earlier in the pandemic, as we enter its fifth year, COVID continues to have negative effects on individuals, health services and society at large. In Australia, more than 50,000 infections have been reported so far in 2024. And this is likely to be a significant underestimate, as we are testing much less than we used to
To reduce the impact on health services and the community, the Australasian College for Infection Prevention and Control is calling for ongoing infection prevention and control strategies in Australia.
Let us all hope that the Queensland Government, and the Australian Government for that matter take this flu season seriously and have contingency plans ready to assist medical authorities deal with it what ever it might be!

Here's another way to keep your paintbrush fresh while you take a break in the middle of painting. Snip the corner of a zippered plastic bag. Then slide your paintbrush inside the bag, handle first, and zip it closed. The paintbrush won't dry out, and the mess will stay inside the bag.
Queensland Health advice on how to tackle mould in homes
Mould is a type of fungus that is found everywhere, outdoors and indoors. However, exposure to mould can cause health and safety issues. People can be exposed to mould through inhalation, skin contact or ingestion.
Most healthy people will not experience health problems from contact with mould, however the risk increases for people with:
• asthma, allergies or other respiratory conditions may be more sensitive to mould
• a health condition or undergoing medical treatment that lowers their immunity are more at risk of infection (e.g. cancer and its treatment, organ transplant recipients).
Causes of mould
Mould grows in damp, dull and poorly ventilated spaces, such as kitchens, bathrooms and laundries. Dust and dirt also helps mould grow. Mould is not usually a problem in indoor environments unless there is a source of water or excess moisture that allows it to grow Mould can negatively affect your health.
Preventing mould
The best way to prevent mould and damp is ensure your home is dry and well-aired:
• Allow sunlight into the property as much as possible, especially in the bathroom, laundry and kitchen.
• Open doors and windows to allow air to circulate, particularly in the bathroom.
• Open windows when you’re cooking, or using a shower, bath or clothes dryer. (Check the air from your clothes dryer is vented outside, not inside. Do not put holes in external walls or ceiling sheets.)
• Clean wet areas of your home, such as your bathroom, kitchen and laundry regularly. Wipe away moisture from windows, walls and near taps. Keep bathroom walls, showers, shower curtains, baths and basins as dry as possible.
• Dry and air damp clothes and shoes outside as soon as possible. Ensure they’re dry before putting in a wardrobe or clothes-
storing area. Leave wardrobe doors open where possible.
• Clean carpets and rugs regularly using a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter vacuum cleaner.
• Clean up water leaks and spills indoors immediately. If you have any water leaks have them repaired.
• Clean evaporation trays in air coolers, dehumidifiers and refrigerators frequently.
• Don’t run evaporative air cooling systems with water during high humidity (over 65%). If the air feels humid, run the air cooler without water and open the windows.
• Allow space between furniture and walls so air can flow, particularly wardrobes.
• Don’t stack boxes or other items against outside walls, especially walls that don’t get a lot of sun.
• Place absorbent beads in affected rooms to soak up extra moisture. You can buy these at Maleny Paint Supplies.
Another product to assist with keeping mould indoors under control is Wet & Forget Indoor Mould & Mildew Remover. Wet & Forget Indoor is a bleach-free solution that kills odour-causing bacteria and helps inhibit the regrowth of mould and mildew. It cleans, deodorises, and sanitises all in one step, and produces no harsh or irritating fumes.
This product is also available through Maleny Paint Supplies.
Are EV Vehicles more expensive
The Queensland Zero Emission Vehicle Rebate Scheme provides eligible Queenslanders rebates of up to $6,000 for eligible new Zero Emission Vehicles purchased from 21 April 2023.
More than 50,000 electric vehicles have been reported as sold in Australia in the opening half of a calendar year
The best selling brand of EV vehicle presently in Queensland is the Tesla brand, but Tesla sales are down 9.6 per cent in the first half of 2024. However, rivals from China, South Korea and Europe are chipping away at its dominance.
The more EV vehicles sold will mean lower pricing!.
Need a Roadworthy Certificate?
Maleny Service Centre have a Licenced Roadworthy Inspector on the premises and we know only too well what it takes to make your vehicle safe and roadworthy.
All vehicles (including trucks, motorbikes and trailers) must have a Safety or Roadworthy Certificate (RWC) if being sold, registered for the first time or being re-registered in Queensland. Registered Vehicles cannot be solid without a RWC.
An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions
Buying an election
“Is there no shame some people
risk to remain in power”
Between July 8-15 a poll by The YouGov poll, of 1019 voters shows Mr Crisafulli remains the preferred Premier. YouGov specialises in market research and opinion polling through online methods. YouGov offer unparalleled insight into what the world thinks.
The most recent YouGov poll also comes after a period that the Queensland Government attempted to ease the cost-of-living with a spending spree in the state budget. This spending spree included freebies like $1000 off energy bills, 50 cent public transport fares, discounted car registration fees, and sweeteners for first home buyers.
All of these sweeteners come at enormous financial costs to the Queensland taxpayer. It is interesting to n one that all of these measures run out just after the next state election on October 26th, 2024. The costs to Queensland will last for a long period simply for short term gain. Do any of these measures offer anything long-termed to Queenslanders.
Could this spending spree be seen as legalised bribery?
It is pretty common for the incumbent government to keep handing out money rather than develop detailed strategies and visions that will benefit Queensland into the future.
Truthful Jones says And he swears that it 100% true - No Bulls##t”
Truthful told us about three of his Irish relatives, all tradies were sitting on this high rise scaffolding eating lunch. One was a sparkie, another a brickie, and the third was a welder. They all open their lunches to find ham sangas.
The sparkie sighs and says; "I hate ham, my wife knows I hate ham, yet every day I end up with this bloody ham piece. If I get one more of these, I'm jumping off this building.”
The brickie agrees with him, saying "You know what, I feel the same way. I'm tired of this bland lunch every day. One more of these and I'm jumping off after you.”
The welder chimes in as well, saying "I too hate this ham piece,. I'm with you boys.”
Well the next day comes, and they find themselves in the same spot for lunch. The sparkie pulls out a ham sandwich and true to his word, jumps off and goes splat. The brickie opens up his lunch, discovers the same and jumps as well. So does the welder.
At the funeral, the sparkie's widow found out what happened and was talking to the other widows, saying "If only I had known how much he hated that lunch, I would have packed him something else."
The brickie's widow says "For sure! I didn't know he wanted something else."
The welder's widow pauses and then says "Don't look at me, my husband packed his own lunch."
Who Gives A Crap? - We Do!
What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets?
We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under five dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation.
Profits from the sale of this toilet paper is used our donation could go to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects.

Plan Now for the next fire season
Do you know your bushfire risk?
You don’t need to live in the bush to be affected by bushfires.
If you live on the coast near scrub, have trees or shrubs within 20 metres of your home or live within 500 metres of bushland, you need to be prepared for bushfire season.
Pay attention to the new RFB television advertisements starting this week, reminding everyone to prepare their property and make a Bush
Simple steps like clearing excess vegetation, mowing regularly and clearing gutters are great ways to minimise risk.

In the last two issues I have been discussing the requirements of a valid Will. I thought it would be a good opportunity to continue the train of thought with what could happen should you die without a valid will. If a person dies without a valid Will, that person is said to have died “intestate”.
Dying without a valid will or ‘intestate’ can be very detrimental to your loved ones and also very expensive. Not only have you given away your ability to decide how your estate is to be distributed and to whom but you also run the risk of the costs of administering your estate increasing drastically and your estate being distributed to unintended beneficiaries.
One example of an unintended beneficiary is an estranged spouse from whom the deceased was not formally divorced. That estranged spouse will share in the deceased’s estate under the Queensland intestacy rules despite the deceased and the estranged spouse not being in a relationship at the time of death.
DYING WITHOUT A WILL: WHAT HAPPENS?
With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny
The Succession Act sets out the rules to be applied in situations of intestacy. Here are some examples:
• If you are married/de facto with no children, your spouse takes 100%;
• If you are married/de facto with one child your spouse takes the first $150,000.00 plus the household contents. Assets after this are divided equally between the spouse and the child
• If you are married/de facto with two or more children your spouse takes the first $150,000.00 plus the household contents.
Assets after this are divided 1/3 for the spouse and 2/3 equally between the children.
In situations where you do not have any close relatives the rules provide that your estate must go to relatives that are further removed from you.
Another problem with dying intestate is the need for court
For the team at Easton Lawyers it is a privilege to help people through tough and stressful times and if the client cannot come to them this is no obstacle as home visits and/or hospital visits are a service they provide.

approval for the appointment of someone to administer your estate. In a will you would appoint an executor of your choice. However with an intestacy, your loved ones would have to apply to the Supreme Court for an administrator to be appointed. In the absence of a suitable person the Supreme Court may appoint the Public Trustee.
If you are considering a trust or company, please seek legal advice before taking action.

Today’s Thought
How much battery power do I need for my home?
Purchasing a battery is a big decision and you want to make sure you make the right choice – especially when we’re talking about battery size. At Redback, we get it. It’s difficult to know what battery will work best for your home and your lifestyle.
We always recommend talking with an accredited installer in your area, as they’re fully trained to look at all your individual needs and advise on the correct sized system.
RedEarth’s PowerOasis is a fully integrated, ready-to-run and modular Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) catering for the niche 50-400kVA power range. It has the option to use both the inbuilt solar PV MPPT or AC-coupled solar PV inverters can be added.

Should I check my solar system for performance?
Solar systems usually need little maintenance over their lifespan, which can be up to 25 years. But over time, overhanging trees, dust and debris, and storm damage can all take their toll on solar panels, wiring and control systems.
If you don’t maintain your solar system, it can reduce its performance. When you have your system installed, the installer must provide you with instruction handbooks, documents required for warranty purposes, as well as a maintenance schedule. It’s important to follow this maintenance advice and check your system periodically.
Home battery sales are rising with volatile power prices

Maleny SES looking for volunteers
Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.
You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.
Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.
An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, flood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.
Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.
Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..
Highly invasive fire ants have been detected are on the move on the Sunshine Coast.
Following another discovery of fire ants on the Sunshine Coast at Currimundi sees teams from the National Fire Ant Eradication Program returning to the region to start further eradication work.
Fire ants are copper brown in colour and have a darker abdomen. They measure 2mm to 6 mm in length with a variety of sizes found in each nest. They can in stings and have the potential to restrict everyday activities such as barbeques, picnics and sporting events.
Should you get stung by a fire ant, most people do not need medical treatment.
If breathing is normal and the sting victim does not have a history of insect allergies, the following home treatments can be effective:
• Apply a cold compress to relieve the swelling and pain.
• Gently wash the affected area with soap and water.
• Take an antihistamine to manage minor, localised reactions and itching.
• It is important to keep the blister intact as there is a risk of secondary infection if the blisters or pustules break.

“Now I am in Tasmania” ….. continuing on with my mission!
“I am now headed north”
I am now at Wagga Wagga having a bit of a rest. Tomorrow morning I’ll be heading down to the local cop shop to hopefully (possibly) be able to get a special licence/permission form to take Slim up the Hume Highway.
Normally this isn’t allowed for an an agricultural vehicle but apparently there are ways to get permission.
Now the Hume is called Sesame Street for a reason but being duel lane and the most direct way to go about things I’m hoping that I can attain the approval to do my 50kph (maintaining absolutely top speed) heading down it.
The Plan I’ve decided is going to be to head to Gundagai then onto Canberra. There I’m hoping to go visit an pay my respects to the Australian War Memorial as well as go get a photo of Slim with Parliament House.
I’ve gotta give a politician mate of mine a ring tomorrow and see if i could maybe get a bit closer than usual as I would like to park on the lawn for a quick photo then scamper.
I don’t know just how it will go, but if you don’t ask then you won’t know.
Be a real “Mate”
Make sure that you look after your matesTreat them all well!.
There are no places for bullies or abusers.
Please make a donation It is a great feeling!
Thank you to TAFE NSW - North Wagga Primary Industries Centre for letting me swing by for a yarn and for doing a fundraiser yesterday , was bloody great to catchup and say “Gday”. . You’ve got fantastic people and facilities that I’m sure the students absolutely love.

“1979
- Queenslands First Rescue Helicopter!”
From small starts with one old helicopter that was unsuitable for the task the forerunner to the service we see today!.
The service began life as the Sunshine Coast Helicopter Rescue Service in November 1979 by local businessman Des Scanlan. This was soon replaced in Bell 206 Jetranger, and operated from a base at the Big Cow on the Bruce Highway at Yandina. In 1983 the base was moved to Maroochydore Airport.
