Chatty Cafe Comes to Maleny!

‘Chatty Café’ is a initiative of the Maleny Lions Club that seeks to break down social isolation and loneliness through people gathering at a ‘Chatty Table’ to simply have a chat over a cup of tea or coffee. The concept originated in Britain a few years ago and recently arrived in Australia, and now has arrived in Maleny.

Everyone has been impacted by loneliness and the feeling of social isolation at some time in their lives, particularly during and after the recent pandemic. It has also been proven that a lack of social interaction can be very damaging to a person’s mental health.

Mindful of this, the Maleny Lions Club introduced the area’s first Chatty Café in early April. Anyone feeling a bit alone is invited for a cup of tea or coffee and a chat about whatever takes their fancy. The friendly Chatty Café volunteers are there to host the Chatty Table!

Maleny Library has generously allowed for the Chatty Cafe to use their facilities at 5 Coral Street, just beside Tesch Park, every Tuesday from 10.30am to 11.30am. A Chatty Table will be hosted at the library by volunteers, primarily from the Maleny Lions

Club for people to go along to this safe, discreet, and quiet environment to have a friendly chat.

In addition, if you know of a family member, friend, associate, or neighbour, who you feel might benefit from someone to talk with, please pass on the information - everyone is welcome!

Contact 0414 899 933 if you have any questions on how you can join in.

Outback security makes Maleny’s Golf Club’s blind shots safer!

Maleny Golf Club in Queensland’s Sunshine Coast Hinterland has collaborated with a local specialist in Outback cattle-station security to develop a new high-tech warning system to improve player safety on two holes with blind tee shots.

Smart cameras strategically placed on the 3 holes transmit a signal back to a warning light which flashes red on a post adjacent to the teeing grounds if golfers are standing within the designated tee-shot landing zones.

The innovative “Blind Shot” system created by Land Watch Australia (LWA) has also delivered valuable productivity and course security bonuses at Maleny and since been installed on a hole at Headland Golf Club on the Sunshine Coast. The system combines solar power, smart motion cameras, LED lighting and dual-band wireless technology which also enables course activity to be monitored remotely from the maintenance shed or on a mobile phone.

Maleny Superintendent Mick McCombe said the club had been seeking a minimalist and bullet-proof safety-solution which did not rely on players climbing up viewing platforms or signalling the all-clear by ringing bells or pushing alarm buzzer buttons.

“The location of the cameras also enables us to remotely check on the progress of play and make workflow decisions on when to water greens and undertake other tasks without having to physically go out and check,” Mick explained.

The cameras are programmed to pivot at night and will be linked with others to be installed by LWA as part of an upgraded CCTV security system covering the golf course and surrounding Maleny community precinct.

https://issuu.com/Maleny-Grapevine-Community-News

Palmwoods-based LWA is an Ag-tech company specialising in the provision of wireless security systems to monitor and prevent theft of livestock, machinery and equipment far from homesteads on large remote cattle stations.

LWA Director and Sales Manager John Hill said development of “Blind Shot” over the past 12 months had evolved by chance after a Maleny Golf Club member had asked if the firm’s security systems could be adapted to resolve a course safety issue.

“They told us about their safety problem and we said we could certainly solve it using the same technology we use to monitor cattle movement in the outback, to monitor player movements on the course instead,” John said.

“These smart cameras can distinguish between a human and a kangaroo or a bird and we’re now developing more advanced analytics which can distinguish between a golf cart and a person holding a club.”

Maleny Golf Club provided LWA with an unexpected opportunity to develop, test ne “Blind Shot” until the product was ready to be offered for sale into a national market involving more than 1500 golf clubs around Australia.

LWA is launching “Blind Shot” nationally at the 2023 Australian Sports Turfgrass Management Conference in Adelaide and will have a promotional booth there to field sales enquiries.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny

We’ve had a quiet week on our own lawns this week due to the Maleny Wood Expo being held at the show-grounds over the May long weekend, resulting in cancellation of Saturday coaching and Sunday play. Our only play day was Thursday which was attended by five keen players. Wallace Roy and Lynette Evans teamed up against Dianne Horsman in a very tight game of Association croquet, ending in a 16 all draw.

Meanwhile Donna Manning gave Helen Uhlmann a comprehensive introduction to Ricochet Croquet, playing a 14 point game with lots of helpful and patient instruction. Helen is looking forward to playing Ricochet more regularly and thoroughly enjoyed the session with Donna.

Things may have been quiet on our lawns, however this did not mean that our club members were idle. Dianne and Lynette, our accomplished Bray Shield pennants team played the Bribie Island Dolphins in some stiff competition on Saturday 29th.

Congratulations to Lynette in her comprehensive singles win with 15 hoops to her opponent’s 7. Dianne met her match with her opponent having a blinder, ending up with 26 hoops to Dianne’s 8. This made for an interesting doubles match which was nail bitingly close, with Bribie just edging ahead by one hoop to win 9:8. Well played to everyone.

Meanwhile, Donna Manning and Ken Barker played Toombul on Sunday 29,30/4 in the Association Croquet 2nd eights competition. They both acquitted themselves very well, coming out with three wins and three losses each. This is a wonderful achievement for play in this state level competition, with each of their wins being quite comprehensive. Congratulations to both Donna and Ken.

We remind our community that groups are always welcome to enjoy a game of Golf or Aussie croquet on our lawns. This can be arranged by contacting our president Sarah Widen on the number below.

The attached photo shows members of the Down Under Caravan Club after playing with us earlier in the year.

Note that with cooler weather and shorter days approaching our play times will revert to 1 pm for 1.30 pm start.

Play days: Thursday and Sunday 1.00 pm for 1.30. Contact Sarah Widin for other days. Please arrive at 1 pm for games to be arranged by 1.15.

Coaching: is available on Saturday mornings at 8 am
