Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club Community Newsletter The Merry Widow Comes to Town This weekend sees the season start of the Maleny Singer’s production of Franz Lehár's famous operetta. The dates are 11 & 12 June and the 18 & 19 June, performed with a live orchestra at the Maleny Community Centre. The librettists, Viktor Léon and Leo Stein based their story – concerning a rich widow, and her countrymen's attempt to keep her money in the principality by nding her the right husband – on an 1861 comedy play, L'attaché d’ambassade (The Embassy Attaché) by Henri Meilhac. The operetta has enjoyed extraordinary international success since its 1905 premiere in Vienna and continues to be frequently revived and recorded. Film and other adaptations have also been made. Well-known music from the score includes the “Vilja Song", "Da geh' ich zu Maxim" ("You'll Find Me at Maxim's"), and the "Merry Widow Waltz". Brought to you by The Maleny Singers, this is perhaps the greatest operetta ever written, with melodies that are so familiar to every music lover. What is not to love? So why not love it? Tickets available at the Maleny Visitor Information Centre and trybooking now.

After a couple of years of no show because of the Covid pandemic, it did appear that the 2022 Maleny Show would be cancelled because of the weather right up to the actual show day. Fortunately, the show did go ahead and the days turned out to be perfect weather for another successful show.

Maleny Tennis Club Honour Boards removed from Clubhouse The Maleny Tennis Club has had to remove their honour board because of its deteriorating condition. The board has been displayed in the clubhouse since the 1940’s. The board contains the names of prominent Maleny tennis players dating back to the 1940’s. These boards are an everyday reminder of the club’s history. The Maleny Tennis Club management committee will review the decision to remove the honour boards from the clubhouse with a view of having them repaired and replaced. https://malenysportandrec.org.au/

Historic Win for the Preservation of Maleny’s Old Bails With thanks to the Glasshouse Country and Maleny News for this story, written by Marlene Jennings.

In true Maleny spirit, perseverance is the key to saving a valuable piece of dairy farming history from disintegration, as the Sunshine Coast Council set plans for restoration. The heritage listed Pattemore cow bails (The Old Bails), constructed from white beech timber in 1908, are located on the Maleny Community Precinct.

Under the ownership of the local council and registered as the Fairview Cattle Management Area, a history of reports submitted since 2012 has detailed the signi cant link to Maleny’s share farming history through the original Pattemore family story. The Friends of Pattemore House president Gail Denver said a new subcommittee was established in January to push the restoration “as they are rotting in the paddock”. Gail added, “The Old Bails are viewed from the Maleny Precinct Heritage Trail and people comment on their state of dilapidation”. Under the drive and passion of Fairview Bails Restoration Committee chairman John te Kloot, a visionary statement, “To restore and preserve the Fairview milking shed and yards for the future education and enjoyment of all”, was proposed. Their mission entailed raising funding “to restore and preserve the Fairview shed and yards, including the six unique walk-through cow bails”, to enable visitors safe access to guided tours and non-entry viewing. Progress occurred when Council’s Head of Property Andrew Tout, senior Cultural Heritage members and Fairview Bails Restoration Committee members met onsite in February. On witnessing the state of decline, the council agreed to commence clearing, safety, and structural

fi

engineering assessments, while subject to funding the view of ongoing works and restoration. Gail notes they are also excited as additional support has come from Councillor Winston Johnston’s Discretionary Funding enabling repairs and replacement of The Old Bail’s external gates and cattle yards. Looking to the future and with council support, the Fairview Bails Restorations Committee will work with Lions, Rotary and the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club and other volunteers to maintain and preserve the historic site. When visiting Pattemore House on the Maleny Precinct visitors can walk in the footsteps of Maleny’s pioneers with a stroll over to the property's Old Dairy Bails, taking in sweeping views of North Maleny on Maleny's Heritage Trail.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny The beautiful weather of Thursday 2nd of June saw play which matched the conditions. Donna Manning created breaks from nowhere, making impossible hoops as she partnered Kath Smith in a doubles game against Helen Andrews and Ken Barker. It was exciting to watch with a quiet nish where Ken and Helen nished ahead 13 - 9. Nick Cram found some good form on lawn 2 to have a comprehensive victory against Diane Horsman 17 – 3. A player to be feared he can play a roll from hoop 1 to 2 regularly. Sarah Widin was merciless in her defeat of Lynette Evans beating her 21 – 8. It was an excellent afternoon of play. Sunday 5th was also picture perfect. Stuart Craig and Kath teamed up to play an intensely strategic game against Lynette in which neither side was prepared to give opportunities to the other. The resulting tight nish re ects this with Lynette managing to squeak ahead 6 – 5 in an honourable result to both sides. The game of the week, however, would have to be the matchup between Diane and Ken. Both players played well with Diane winning 21 – 15.

Play days: Thursday and Sunday 1.00 pm for 1.30. Contact Sarah Widin for other days. Please arrive at 1 pm for games to be arranged by 1.15. The attached photograph shows an interesting position which arose during their game. Diane’s black is for hoop 3. Should she take off from blue, which she has just roqueted, to make the hoop, or come down to red and yellow with the long rush back to 3? There is no correct answer. Depends on how well you can rush, how you want to build your break and even how the smoke from the chicken entrails has drifted in the morning ritual. It’s the beauty of the game.
